”Fuocoammare” (Fire at Sea) wins Golden Bear for best film in Berlin
BERLIN - Gianfranco Rosi’s documentary film “Fuocoammare” (Fire at Sea), about the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean off the Italian island of Lampedusa, won the Golden Bear prize for Best Film at the Berlin International Film Festival on Saturday. It was a fitting end for a festival which went out of its way to make

those who risked their lives to escape war and poverty, and to the people of Lampedusa who welcomed them. “Of course now at this moment my deeper thoughts go to all the people that never arrived to Lampudusa on these journeys of hope,” Rosi said in his acceptance speech on stage at Berlin’s cinema palace for the glittering awards ceremony. Rosi, who won the top prize for another documentary in Venice in 2013, in this film shows daily life on the small island, mostly through the eyes of a young boy named Samuele who makes slingshots to shoot at birds and cactuses. In the sea nearby, the Italian navy searches for overloaded boats full of refugees dying of suffocation and asphyxiation by diesel fumes and brings survivors back to Lampedusa for treatment and for transport to refugee centres. “I want to dedicate this award to the people of Lampedusa who were always extremely open to accept people arriving there,” Rosi said. He noted that the flood of refugees that has made headlines recently began some 30 years ago for the island just off the coast of North Africa. Rosi said he had asked Dr. Pietro Bartolo, a physician on Lampedusa who treats refugees and appears in the film, why the island welcomes the tens of thousands of people who land there. (rtr)

U.S. President George W. Bush (L) awards the Presidential Medal of Freedom to American novelist Harper Lee (C) in the East Room of the White House, Washington, in this November 5, 2007 file picture. Lee, who wrote one of America’s most enduring literary classics, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” about a child’s view of right and wrong and waited 55 years to publish a second book with the same characters from a very different point of view, has died at the age of 89.
Private funeral service held for Harper Lee in Alabama home town
ALABAMA - Author Harper Lee, who led a mostly quiet life after the publication of her 1960 classic of American literature “To Kill a Mockingbird,” was laid to rest on Saturday following a private memorial service at a church in her Alabama home town, her attorney said. The service comes just one day after Lee’s attorney said she had died in her sleep on Friday at age 89 in her hometown of Monroeville. The funeral service attended by Lee’s family and friends was held at First United Methodist Church in Monroeville, with Auburn University professor emeritus Wayne Flynt delivering the eulogy, said Lee’s attorney, Tonja Carter. The acclaimed author, who after her death drew praise on Friday from a wide range of public figures, including Oprah Winfrey and former President George W. Bush, was laid to rest at her family burial plot, alongside her father, mother and one sister, Alice, Carter said.
Lee had for years alternated between sharing a home with her sister, Alice Lee, in Monroeville and living in an apartment in New York. She won the Pulitzer Prize for her 1960 book “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Its unflinching examination of racial hatred in the South centered on lawyer Atticus Finch, the adored father of the young narrator Scout, who stood up to a white lynch mob and unsuccessfully defended a black man wrongly accused of raping a white woman. In Lee’s second novel, “Go Set a Watchman” which was published last year and quickly became a bestseller, an older Atticus had racial views that left the grown-up Scout greatly disillusioned. Lee reportedly wrote “Go Set a Watchman” before she authored “To Kill a Mockingbird.” For many years, Lee, a shy woman with an engaging Southern drawl who never married, lived quietly and privately, always turning down interview requests. Blatter era ends as scandal-hit FIFA set to elect new leader
GENEVA — The Sepp Blatter era at FIFA is set to finally end Friday when soccer’s scandal-scarred world body picks a new president after nine months of crisis. An election meeting designed to give FIFA a fresh start with a new leader could yet be overshadowed by its criminally corrupt past. Voters return to Zurich this week unsure who is the next target of federal law enforcement agencies in the United States and Switzerland, who have sent FIFA into meltdown with waves of arrests, extraditions and guilty pleas. Swiss prosecutors could decide this week is best to meet key witnesses in their widening case. Many soccer officials are making possibly their last working trip to Switzerland until May 2019, when the next scheduled FIFA election should be held in Zurich. At the last election in May, Blatter won a fifth presidential term two days after FIFA’s favored five-star hotel in Zurich and its own headquarters were raided. The pressure of criminal investigations soon forced Blatter from his beloved FIFA in his 41st year on the payroll. Now, leaders of FIFA’s 209 member federations visit the tiny Swiss city again to elect a successor for the now-banned 79-year-old who has been president since 1998. The winner will be just the fourth elected FIFA chief in more than 50 years. Two front-runners have emerged in a five-candidate contest: Asia’s soccer leader, Sheikh Salman of
Bahrain, and Gianni Infantino, the Swiss general secretary of European governing body UEFA. The other candidates are: Former FIFA vice president Prince Ali of Jordan, who lost to Blatter in May; former FIFA official Jerome Champagne of France; and South African businessman Tokyo Sexwale, once an inmate of Robben Island prison with Nelson Mandela. Infantino acknowledged that police could hit FIFA for the fourth time in nine months. “They know what is best for their work to be done in the most efficient way,” Infantino told The Associated Press in a recent interview. “If I’m elected president of FIFA, what they can count on (is) not 100 but 200 percent with me to clean and to put anyone in jail who has done anything bad for football.” The three previous strikes — arresting seven men, including two FIFA vice presidents, on May 27; interrogating Blatter and former protege Michel Platini on Sept. 25; arresting two more FIFA vice presidents on Dec. 3 — were on days that FIFA’s discredited executive committee met. It meets again Wednesday. Sheikh Salman suggests govern-

That view is shared by Blatter and Russian President Vladimir Putin, who claimed the U.S. wants the 2018 World Cup taken from his country. “Choosing the time and place during an election or an (execu-
tive committee) meeting,” Sheikh Salman told the AP this month of previous police raids, “I think this raises a lot of doubts on why, and leave people a bit suspicious on the intentions.”

Waste management at Landih applies sanitary landfill
HEAPS of garbage found in landfill often results in public protests over the stench that is emitted. Some landfills have even been forced to close on these grounds. The Regional Landfill at Landih village, Bangli is turning to the use of a tech-
nology known as ‘sanitary landfill system’, to avoid being shut down. Incoming garbage is immediately compacted and covered in soil. This method causes the environment of the landfill to look clean and eco-friendly. As observed on Saturday (Feb. 20), the landfill looks very different that it did previously: there are no piles of garbage in sight. In fact there is a lot of garbage here but every
day it is compacted down to a height of 50 to 80 cm and then covered in about 30 cm of soil. “We apply the sanitary landfill methode. Incoming garbage is immediately compacted and covered with soil,” explained the Head of the Bangli Environment Agency (BLH), I Made Alit Parwata. Parwata explained that that this processing
model is intended to avoid odor and reduce the production of flies that carry bacteria. ìSome types of plastic waste first sifted out to be recycled. The smell of garbage is not so oppressive because it has been managed quite well,î he said. Continue to page 2 waste ...

Dewa Raka Putra, who works at the landfill that covers some 4.75 hectare and has a capacity for some 550,000 meters of garbage, said that the district of Bangli routinely dumps garbage here. In addition to using sanitary landfill system, the Landih landfill is also equipped with a waste water treatment apparatus located downstream from the landfill. Water initially looks turbid becomes clear throught the filtration process. “This landfill is also equipped with waste water treatment that prevents the nearby spring from becoming contami-
nated,” said Putra. This man from Kayubihi village went on to say that that there system for managing the garbage means that people no longer flee the area, and in fact on certain holidays, the waste and water treatment area actually receives visitors. “On Galungan, a lot of young people have a promenade here. They take photos around water treatment location,” he added. Putra also explained there are two giant 20 square meter wide and 5 meter deep holes that are estimated to be able to filled over the next twenty years. “Currently only the hole in the North is used, but soon we will start using the one in the South as well.,” he concluded. This was disclosed by Mayor Rai Mantra when met after the office handover at Sewaka Dharma Building Lumintang, Wednesday. The reinaugurated mayor stated that waste remains a crucial issue for Denpasar. Rai Mantra also admitted that Denpasar has been overwhelmed to deal with waste problem mainly at the
Suwung landfill. It is said that in the first 100 days of his office, he will work on the improvement of public services as well as waste management, including the complaints of residents so that they can be directly addressed by respective agency. “Waste management will get his
priority in the future. Some days ago, I had time to read the papers related to the waste problem. And this morning (Wednesday—Ed) during the inauguration I coincidentally met Mr. Giri Prasta (the regent of Badung—Ed) and we had time to discuss about this issue,” said Rai Mantra. Related to the desire of Pesanggaran residents not to dump waste at the location, Rai Mantra said that his office does not have the authority for that. The landfill is owned by the province. “The land is not ours, but belongs to the province,” he said. Deputy Mayor of Denpasar IGN
Jaya Negara revealed that Suwung landfill issues must be discussed together, especially about the waste processing conducted by PT NOEI. “Since it is unable to do what stated in the agreement, it must be immediately revoked. The case is different if they are already working,” he said. On the other hand, a number of legislators of the Denpasar House of Representatives pointed that the emergence of people’s protests was the result of powerlessness of PT NOEI in processing waste. Accordingly, the parliament requested the governor of Bali and PT Sarbagita
to immediately intervene. “I think it reasonable if people express such a threat considering there is no guarantee of hygiene in the area around the landfill. If I were living around the area, I would certainly convey the same thing. Surrounding communities strongly feel the plastic waste pollution and air pollution. Not to mention, there is possibility of an outbreak of disease and condition of the well water is unfit to drink,” said a member of Commission IV of the Denpasar House of Representatives, A.A. Gede Ngurah Widiada, accompanied by several other members. (kmb12)

Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.
The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on

The antipasti station at an Autogrill in Italy.
Slow Food Done Fast - Along The Roadside
ITALY - “Great food” and “highway rest stop” are not phrases I would normally utter in the same breath. But that was before I experienced the Italian Autogrill. At about 500 locations across Italy, you can get gas, go to the bathroom and then, very likely, have a better dining experience than at most Italian restaurants in the United States. Perhaps you’d like to choose your steak from the glistening
display of fresh meat, and tell the chef how you’d like it cooked. Or maybe the pasta station, with its many pots of boiling water waiting for your choice of pasta and sauce, is calling to you. How about a spaghetti alle vongole prepared while you wait? In those few minutes
while the pasta is being cooked to perfection, and the clams are opening up in their white wine sauce, you might wander over to the antipasti station and choose a beautiful plate of prosciutto, mozzarella and arugula. Then, since you are in Italy, pick up a nice half bottle of local wine and settle in for what could very well be one of the best meals of your life. The Autogrill offers not only
great food but valuable insights into the values and priorities of a culture. Italians enjoy modern life, efficiency and convenience as much as anyone, but modernity and convenience need not compromise food. At the Autogrill, whether you go for the whole dining experience, or just grab a freshly made panino, you will get healthy, delicious food made with great ingredients and great
Seten first discovered the strange smoke at around 07:00 on Kuningan feast. “I did not know where the smoke was coming from as there was no burning object. Upon closer inspection I found that the smoke itself was hot enough to poach an egg. At first I was afraid but people said not to worry,” said Seten. Chief Executive of the Buleleng Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), I Ketut Yasa, said they immediately inspected the smoke after hearing about it. They found that the smoke was accompanied by the sound of gurgling water. “Locals reported the sudden emergence of this strange smoke to us. In fact the discharge of smoke is very small and based on the fact that the smoke is quite hot and more akin to vapor, we believe that it is coming from an underground hot spring,” said Yasa when contacted by Bali Post on Saturday (Feb. 20). Yasa does not want to confirm the source of the smokey vapor until the Buleleng Environment Agency has studied the matter.
So far BPBD Buleleng has only had a chance to do a preliminary investigation, based on which they have ascertained that Seten is not in danger. “We cannot make be sure of what lies underground at this point as further research is required, including having the smokey substance verified by BLH Buleleng,” said Yasa. Subdistrict head of Gerokgak, Putu Ariadi Pribadi, explained that the strange smoke and heat has not appeared anywhere else and tht he has asked his staff to monitor Ketut Seten’s home. Many suspect that there is some source of heat underground. “Yes, indeed smoke accompanied by the sound of boiling water was found in the courtyard of the former head of Banyupoh -Mr. Seten. It is not dangerous and has been checked. This is the first incident of its kind here, but similar findings have occurred above other hot springs like in Gerokgak,” explained Ariadi Pribadi. (kmb34)

Australia issues security alert for Kuala Lumpur
KUALA LUMPUR - The Australian government warned on Sunday that terrorists may be planning attacks in and around the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia has been on high alert since a bomb and gun attack in Indonesia’s capital in January, which
was claimed by the Islamic State militant group. Malaysia had also arrested a suspected militant who confessed to be planning an attack in the country. “Terrorists may be planning attacks in and around Kuala Lumpur. Attacks could be indiscriminate
and may target Western interests or locations frequented by Westerners,” read a travel advisory post on the Australian government website. It also recommended that Australians avoid travel to the coastal region of eastern Sabah, where the
beaches and islands are popular with foreign tourists and diving enthusiasts. Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry said it noted the travel advisories and would keep foreign missions informed on security developments.
“We also acknowledge the fact that foreign missions are at liberty to provide their own assessment of the security situation in their host countries albeit the fact that it may not be accurate or gives a true reflection of the situation,” a ministry spokesperson said. (rtr)

When getting near the spring, the pounding sound of waves will be heard. Headman of Batukandik, I Wayan Katon, said that the springs have been visited by many travelers from three years ago. “This resort is challenging, but the view is incredible. Nyaagang is characterized by residents placing offerings outside their doors at exactly noon. Some say that is “check-out” time for the ancestros as they make their way back to nirvana. Ngeluarang Bekal also involves everyone eating together to see the ancestors off. They also believe that the ancestral spirits came into this world on the day before Galungan. One resident of Pegending hamlet, Sangkanbuana named Nengah Sucipta said that the Nyaagang tradition has to do with the spirits of the ancestors. Their arrival is welcomed on Penampahan Galungan that is then followed by Galungan which marks the victory of dharma (truth) over adharma (untruth). The name Penampahan Galungan refers to the welcoming of the arrival of the ancestor spirits. After the ancestral spirits come down, people conduct worship by presenting offerings until Kuningan. Sucipta added that this tradition is not unique to Sangkanbuana customary village, but is also performed in other villages including; Gelgel, Kamasan, Satra, Tojan, Penasan and several other customary
villages in Klungkung. ìThe point of this tradition is that we must always pay homage and remember the ancestors wherever they are after leaving this mundane world,î he said. Dewa Ketut Soma, a Balinese literature, culture and Hinduism, expert says that the tradition of Nyaagang, conducted by some Hindus during the Kuningan holiday is mentioned in the Sundari Gama palm-leaf manuscript. According to the manuscript, the peak of the victory of dharma over adharma is interpreted as the descent of deities into the mundane world to give blessings in the form of welfare to their living descendants. This is then celebrated as Galungan. Kuningan is then celebrated with a ceremony that is marked with all-yellow paraphanalia as a form of devotion to the ancestral souls. ìAccording to the literature, Nyaagan represents an escorting of the deities back to their respective abodes in heaven before midday. This tradition is carried outin front of the entrance gates of the house compounds of each resident,î said Dewa Soma. (wia)
SINGARAJA — A number of tourist guides in Buleleng participated in training conducted by the Buleleng Culture and Tourism Agency, Tuesday (Feb. 16). The tourist guides are involved in managing the tourism potential at 10 tourism villages stipulated by local government. It is meant to improve performance and capabilities of human resources in managing the tourism potential at their respective home village. Chief of the Buleleng Cul-
Regent Putu Agus Suradnyana asserted that some aspects must be improved by tourist guides including the ethics and competency of their field. The regent exemplified how tourist guides can provide correct explanation about tourist destinations in Buleleng. “I want to remind that the knowledge on the ethics and insight of tourist guides should be improved. Do not let tourist guides provide incorrect information due to lack of perspectives, so that it will have a
negative impact on the tourism in our region,” he affirmed. On the other hand, the regent also stated that the arrangement of tourism in the region is commenced from internal aspect and building infrastructure. This effort will be helpful to link the tourism villages with surrounding objects. Currently, the construction of infrastructure in Buleleng has been done. Besides, tourism is also developed with the concept of community-based tourism. (kmb38)
ple, worship ceremonies only go on until noon on Kuningan day. Some residents of Klungkung maintain a tradition called Nyaagang or Ngeluarang Bekal. It is not known for sure when this tradition began but it still
being passed down to this day. The offerings that people present during Nyaagang are not arbitrary and usually consist of tipat ajengan (rice paddy) and other raw and cooked ingredients, fruits and salad.

Tourism Office fosters numerous tourist guides ture and Tourism Agency, Gede Suyasa, amid the training said that the tourist guides get the training with the materials such as the basic guiding techniques and professional ethics of tourist guides. The materials were presented by speakers from government institution, tourism practitioners from the Indonesia Tourist Guides Association (HPI) and academician. The training is so important considering the tourism world is facing
a tight competition in line with the enactment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). Suyasa worried that unqualified tour guides in the region will lose competitiveness against the tour guides from outside the region. “This is very important because the AEC required the tourist guides are able to compete against the others so that if the human resource capabilities are unqualified it may be less competitive,” he said.

Harsh winds and torrential rains tore up homes and cut power, water and communications links across the nation of about 900,000 people, although Suva, the capital, escaped the brunt after the storm changed direction at the last minute. Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama confirmed the death toll and declared a 30-day state of emergency, with schools ordered to shut and a nationwide curfew extended until Monday morning. “When we are able we will provide timelines for the return of water and power,” he said, adding that electricity supply to some areas had been deliberately cut to avert further damage. The archipelago of about 300 islands hit late on Saturday by tropical cyclone Winston, which packed winds of 230 kph (143 mph) that gusted up to 325 kph (202 mph).
Businessman Jay Dayal, who lives near Rakiraki, on the north coast of Fiji’s main island where the cyclone hit land, said the storm damage was extensive. “I wouldn’t be surprised if people are now starting to go without food,” Dayal told Reuters. “It looks like a different country, it doesn’t look like Fiji.” Humanitarian agencies warned Fiji may be facing a potential health crisis, mainly due to the lack of electricity. Low-lying river areas where hundreds of people live in tin sheds are also particularly vulnerable, aid workers said. “We need electricity to ensure pumps are working and for sterilization,” Raijeli Nicole, an official of aid agency Oxfam, told Reuters by telephone that flights have been scheduled on Sunday to assess damage in remote areas. Trump wins decisively in South Carolina, Clinton clinches Nevada
LAS VEGAS - Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump rolled to victory on Saturday in South Carolina in a contest that saw former Florida Governor Jeb Bush drop out, while Democratic hopeful Hillary Clinton beat back a strong challenge from Bernie Sanders in Nevada. The victories by Trump, who is running as an anti-establishment outsider, and Clinton, a preeminent political insider, solidified their positions as the front-runners to win their parties’ respective nominations ahead of the Nov. 8 presidential election. The night’s most prominent casualty, Bush suffered a distant fourth place finish in the Republican contest and announced he had suspended his campaign, ending his dream of becoming a third Bush president after his father and brother. “The people of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina have spoken, and I really respect their decision,” an emotional Bush said in Columbia. He finished far
out of the running in each of the first three states. By winning both South Carolina and New Hampshire and holding leads in 13 states that hold Republican contests on March 1, Trump was arguably on track to win the nomination, an outcome that seemed astounding to contemplate when he entered the race last summer. “It’s going to be very difficult for him to be derailed at this point,” said Hogan Gidley, who was a senior adviser to former Republican candidate Mike Huckabee. The 69-year-old real estate billionaire and reality TV star was declared the winner in South Carolina about an hour after polls closed, and launched into a feisty victory speech. “Let’s put this thing away,” Trump told cheering supporters in Spartanburg. He denounced TV pundits for saying there could be enough antiTrump votes to beat him when the race thins further. “These geniuses,” he said.
“They don’t understand that as people drop out, I’m going to get a lot of those votes also. You don’t just add them together.” Trump easily defeated Florida Senator Marco Rubio and Texas Senator Ted Cruz, who were in a close fight for second place and the right to declare themselves the anti-Trump alternative. With 99 percent of South Carolina precincts reporting, Trump had 32.5 percent, followed by Rubio with 22.5 percent and Cruz with 22.3 percent. Cruz’s inability to distinguish himself from Rubio in the state was a blow to his campaign, which had invested heavily there to rally support among South Carolina’s large population of evangelical voters. Trump’s victory won him at least 44 of the state’s 50 delegates, bringing his delegate count to 61, compared to 11 for Cruz and 10 for Rubio, according to a tally by Real Clear Politics. Republicans need 1,237 delegates to win the party nomination. (rtr)

BUSINESS Iran seeks $45B in foreign investment
TEHRAN — Iran’s economy minister said his country is seeking $45 billion in foreign investment following the implementation of a landmark nuclear deal with world powers last month. Ali Tayebnia told reporters Saturday that Iran expects $15 billion in direct foreign investment alone in the next Iranian calendar year, which begins March 20. The historic agreement brought about the lifting of international sanctions last month after the U.N. certified that Iran has met all its commitments to curb its nuclear activities under last summer’s accord. Iran expects an economic breakthrough after the lifting of sanctions, which has allowed it to access overseas assets and sell crude oil more freely. Iran already has access to more
than $100 billion worth of frozen overseas assets and Iranian banks earlier this month were reconnected to SWIFT, a Belgian-based cooperative that handles wire transfers between financial institutions. Tayebnia said Iran’s strategic location, political stability and population of 80 million has made the energy-rich Persian state into an attractive place for foreign investment. “All these factors have led to a capacity to attract more than $45 billion in foreign financial resources for next year, with about $15 billion in direct foreign investment,” he
told a press conference. Tayebnia said Iran signed an agreement with Japan earlier this month for $10 billion in investments and is seeking similar deals with other nations. Iran is now seeking to reduce reliance on oil revenues and move towards an economy that depends on taxation, tourism, agriculture and other sources of revenue. Attracting foreign investment is seen as a necessary must-do step towards that goal. Tayebnia, however, said Iran welcomes foreign investment only if it leads to strengthening Iran’s economy. “We won’t welcome any proposal that doesn’t lead to transfer of technology and capital (to Iran) or doesn’t boost production and exports,” he said. Mahfudz cited the most recent case involving popular artist Syaiful Jamal and presented IB, who were accused of committing sexual abuse with underage people of the same sex. “If we look closely into the indicators of the phenomenon, I fear Indonesia is entering a situation of emergency with the LGTB danger,” he said. Among the indicators is that the LGTB cases involve mainly public figures especially artists who are often seen as a role model by their fans. The second indicator is that as they involve public figures, the LGTB cases are often spotlighted

Deere’s 1Q results top estimates, but cuts full-year outlook
MOLINE, Ill. — Deere cut its full-year earnings forecast Friday even as the agricultural equipment maker beat Wall Street’s expectations for the first quarter. It has been dealing with weak sales of farm and construction equipment. Its shares fell more than 3 percent in afternoon trading. Falling commodity prices have made farmers less likely to buy new equipment. Declining oil prices have also affected its construction equipment sales. In November the company announced that it was laying off about 220 workers. But Deere has been effectively managing its costs. In the first quarter, total costs and expenses declined to $5.17 billion from $5.82 billion. For the period ended Jan. 31, Deere & Co. earned $254.4 million, or 80 cents per share. That is down 34 percent from its earnings of $386.8 million, or $1.12 per share, a year earlier.
This beat the 71 cents per share that analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research expected. Revenue for the Moline, Illinois-based company totaled $5.53 billion. Sales for the agriculture and turf unit dropped 12 percent in the quarter. Construction and forestry division sales fell 23 percent. For fiscal 2016, Deere now anticipates equipment sales declining about 10 percent and earnings of approximately $1.3 billion. Its prior guidance was for equipment sales to fall 7 percent and earnings to come in at about $1.4 billion. The company predicts equipment sales will drop approximately 8 percent in the second quarter. Deere shares fell $2.86, or 3.6 percent, to $77.47 in afternoon trading Friday. Its shares are down almost 15 percent over the past year. (ap)

Lawmaker warns of growing cases of homosexuality and bisexuality
JAKARTA - Lawmaker Mahfudz Siddik warned of growing criminality involving lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders (LGBT) in the country. The chairman of Commission I of the Parliament described the situation in the country as alarming with the LGBT phenomenon that needs serious addressing.

by the mass media and widely disseminated especially television, he said. The Indonesian Broadcasting Commission, in February, 2016 alone served six warnings against TV programs on LGTB and their behaviors. The third indicator is attempts to rally lesbians, gays and bisexuals to demand recognition of their rights and existence as a community. At the same time they seek to increase their number especially from among public figure that would be more effective as a role model to attract more people, he said. The fourth indicator is that at the same time with the third indicator,
there is growing defense voiced by individuals or institutes, of the rights demanded by the LGTB, he said. “There are already academicians emerging to champion move to defend the right of LGTB community, and meanwhile, non government organization (LSM) are active giving advocacy,” he said. He said he also noted there are multinational companies involved in promoting the interest of LGBT. He said he even suspected that foreign donor agencies financed the campaigns for the recognition of the rights of LGTB in the country. The fifth indicator is the viral campaigns through social media utilized by LGBT and their sympathizers to spread their aspirations rallying support and catching new followers. Unfortunately, until now there is no regulation effective to control the viral campaigns through
the social media, he said. “Especially as there are indications that the social media program providers, which are generally based abroad seem to be permissive to LGTB,” he said. The sixth indicator is there is no law and regulation in the country clearly banning LGTB community. The seventh is that physicians, psychologists and psychiatrists have clearly declared that LGTB sexual behavior is an anomaly, a deviation in orientation and is contagious. Anyone could fall victim of its contamination regardless of age and background, he said. All religions have prohibited LGTB, he added. The eight indicator is that until now the government is not clear on the existence of LGTB in its context of the danger and threat to the future of the nation.
The ninth is LGTB campaigns that take place in the country are inspired by the success of their movements in a number of other countries mainly in Europe where they have legal recognition. “This will become an agenda of systemic struggle for legitimacy of LGBT community in the country,” Mahfudz Siddik said. The indicators gave strong reason to say that Indonesia is entering an emergent situation facing the danger of LGBT, he said. The government and the Parliament and all elements of the community should be aware of the situation, and act collectively to cope with the problem, he said. “The mass media including the broadcasting service media and social media should restrain from spreading reports about the behaviors of LGTB,” he said. Seven Surabaya-bound flights diverted to Bali
KUTA - Seven Surabaya-bound flights were diverted to Ngurah Rai Airport in Bali after Juanda Airport in Surabaya was temporarily closed Saturday. Among the airlines which diverted their flights to Bali were Citilink with flight numbers QG-876 from Pontianak, QG-671 from Manado and QG-920 from Batam, General Manager of state airport operator PT Angkasa Pura I at Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali, Trikora Harjo, said Saturday. The others were Lion Air with flight numbers JT-588 from Jakarta, JT-982 from Medan and JT-807 from Makassar, and AirAsia Xtra with flight number XT-393 from Johor Bahru, Malaysia. Meanwhile, four Surabaya-bound flights from Denpasar were delayed. The four flights were Garuda Indonesia’s GA-347, Lion Airs JT-916, Citilinks QG-647, and NamAirs IN-

BANDA ACEH - Regional Legislative Assembly (DPRD) spokesman Farid Nyak Umar has asked the Banda Aceh city government to focus on the prevention of dengue fever. “We have asked the city government, in this case the city health office, to maximize the prevention of dengue fever,” Umar remarked here Saturday. In spite of the fact that the dengue fever in Banda Aceh has not been categorized as an extraordinary event, its prevention remains a priority, the politician of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) noted. “It is better to prevent than cure. To that end, the city government should be focusing
its efforts on the prevention of dengue fever,” Umar explained. The office has been trying to anticipate the threat of dengue fever in the capital of Aceh province, Banda Aceh Health Office Chief Media Yulizar said earlier. “We have instructed our staff go straight to the field to anticipate the onset of scarlet fever. Anticipatory measure is more important than the case,” Yulizar said. There is always the threat of dengue fever, and prevention is more focused on the eradication of the nest and larvae of mosquitoes, so the source of the disease does not develop, according to him. Seven people killed in random Michigan shootings, suspect in custody
MICHIGAN - Seven people were shot and killed and several others wounded in Michigan on Saturday night in a series of apparently random public shootings, according to authorities and local media. The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety said on its Facebook page that six people had been shot and killed and several others seriously wounded in three shootings in Kalamazoo County, in southwest Michigan. Local media said early on Sunday a teen-aged girl who was shot had died, becoming the seventh fatality. “We seem to be dealing with a worst-case scenario, someone driving around shooting,” Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Paul Matyas told NBC News after the shootings. At least three people were wounded in the attacks. The Kalamazoo Public Safety Department said a suspect fitting the description of the gunman had been apprehended without incident,
citing Chief Jeff Hadley. The suspect was not identified, but media reports, citing police, said he was aged 45, from Kalamazoo. The public safety department earlier described the gunman as a white male in his 50s who was believed to be driving a dark colored Chevy HHR SUV with chrome wheels, adding that the vehicle may have been damaged. Police said the man who was arrested was driving a black HHR and had a weapon in the vehicle. According to local media, four people were shot dead at a Cracker Barrel restaurant in Texas Township, and two more died at a Seelye Kia dealership in Kalamazoo. The teen-aged victim who later died was also shot at the restaurant.
The carnage began early Saturday evening when Matyas said police were first called to a Kalamazoo County apartment building where a woman was shot multiple times before later being listed in serious condition. Hours later, they were called to the car dealership where two people were shot and killed, and a third was wounded. Four people were killed at a third shooting scene in the Cracker Barrel parking lot, where the gunman opened fire on people in their cars after a brief conversation. A fifth person died later. The victims and shooting scenes appeared to have no link apart from the suspect. No motive for the seemingly random attacks had been determined. Authorities could not be reached to verify the reports independently, but confirmed the deaths in media interviews and on social media. (rtr)

PM Cameron implores London Mayor Boris not to join EU leave campaign
LONDON - Prime Minister David Cameron on Sunday implored Boris Johnson not to join the campaign for a British exit from the European Union as the charismatic London mayor prepares to declare his stance on membership. Cameron called a June 23 referendum after clinching a deal from other EU leaders that he said gave Britain special status in the world’s biggest trading bloc, though six of his cabinet have rebelled and are campaigning to leave the EU. Johnson, who has charmed some voters with a buffoonish persona that masks fierce ambition to succeed Cameron, has so far been silent though British media are speculating that he 51-year-old mayor will join the campaign to leave the EU. Cameron cautioned Johnson against joining with opponents of the EU such as UK Independence Party chief Nigel Farage and maverick
campaigner George Galloway. “The prospect of linking arms with Nigel Farage and George Galloway and taking a leap into the dark is the wrong step for our country and if Boris, and if others, really care about being able to get things done in our world then the EU is one of the ways in which we get them done,” Cameron said. “I would say to Boris what I say to everybody else, which is that we will be safer, we will be stronger, we will be better off inside the EU,” Cameron told the BBC. The rumpled mayor is due to publish his views on Britain’s EU membership at 2200 GMT on Sunday. An Ipsos MORI poll showed Johnson, 51, is second only to Cameron when it comes to swaying public opinion on Europe. One in three voters said Johnson would be important in helping them decide which way to vote, the poll showed. (rtr)
Blatter ...
Monday. Even if barred from the election hall, Blatter has been an election factor taking calls from voters seeking advice, he told a French radio station this week. “Vote with your conscience. Vote for who you find good,” said Blatter, who has criticized Infantino in interviews. They were born in neighboring villages in the Valais region. Infantino’s campaign has tempted voters with more: Expanding the World Cup from 32 to 40 teams to increase FIFA’s $5 billion tournament income; bigger annual grants to national and continental bodies; new money for small regional groups. Salman’s manifesto is closer to Blatter’s thinking though he promises a hands-off leadership style. Still, there is genuine warmth between the favorites. “I get along very well with him,” Sheikh Salman said of Infantino. “He’s a great guy.” Infantino has not directly criticized the sheikh, who led Bahrain’s soccer federation during Arab Spring protests in 2011. Prince Ali did attack, saying Sheikh Salman cannot gain respect because he failed to protect Bahrain national team players who were detained for attending pro-democracy events. They later alleged torture by security forces. In a potentially tight race, one theory has Prince Ali’s voters holding the balance of power. A plausible scenario sees Sheikh Salman and Infantino with significant support in the first-round ballot, yet short of up to 140 votes needed for outright victory, and maybe fewer than the 105-plus tally which could persuade rivals to concede ahead of a second vote. The Bahraini royal was “absolutely” sure FIFA did enough since May to deserve being left in peace this week. FIFA also hopes so, and aims to persuade the U.S. Department of Justice that it is a victim of systemic corruption and should not be indicted. So, on Friday, the 209 members can also vote through wide-ranging reforms to restructure FIFA. These would dilute the president’s authority, empower FIFA’s staff and increase oversight by independent experts. If FIFA was indicted, it would join 41 soccer and marketing officials, plus marketing agencies, who have been charged or pleaded guilty so far in the sprawling U.S. case. Blatter, who cannot be extradited from Switzerland, is a confirmed target. American investigators have focused on bribery in North and South America valued at $200 million for awarding commercial rights for continental competitions. They also alleged cash-for-votes paid through a FIFA account linked to 2010 World Cup host South Africa. Swiss prosecutors began by searching for money laundering in the 20182022 World Cup bid contests won by Russia and Qatar. Liaising with American counterparts, they went far beyond that brief to target all FIFA business. Last September, a Swiss criminal case was opened against Blatter for mismanagement of FIFA money. It led FIFA’s ethics committee to ban both Blatter and Platini for eight years. Verdicts in their appeals are expected

The top seed pipped Cuevas in a first set tie-break and denied his opponent two set points in the second but succumbed to his first defeat against the world number 45. “I lost an opportunity, that’s it,” Spaniard Nadal said after being denied his 100th ATP final by claycourt specialist Cuevas who fired 48 winners to clinch the contest. “I fought until the end. I have to accept it and keep working to try to change the dynamic. That’s what’s happening today and I have to work
hard to change it,” added the 14times grand slam champion. “I didn’t win a title, so it wasn’t a positive two tournaments. I had my chances in both. I lost in the semi-finals of both tournaments and just have to look forward to Indian Wells.” Cuevas will meet another unseeded player in Guido Pella in the claycourt final after the Argentine’s 6-1 6-4 humbling of fifth seed Dominic Thiem, who beat Nadal in the semi-finals in Buenos Aires

Farah overcomes spiked leg to win first race of 2016
LONDON - Mo Farah suffered a cut that left blood streaming down his leg but the mid-race spiking could not stop the world’s leading distance runner recording his first track victory of Olympic year in Glasgow on Saturday. A month after Britain’s double Olympic champion was beaten into second place at the boggy Great
Edinburgh cross country meeting, he returned to Scotland to make amends by winning the 3,000 metres in the more comforting surrounds of the Emirates indoor arena. After a six-week training spell in Ethiopia, the 32-year-old was presented with a straightforward task against limited rivals as he brushed
aside the injury caused by a stray opposition spike to win in a modest seven minutes 39.55 seconds. Farah, who is expected to defend his Olympic 5,000 and 10,000 titles in Rio de Janeiro in August, had been fancied to target Dave Moorcroft’s long-standing British record of 7:32.79 in Glasgow. Poor pacemaking quickly put
paid to that idea, though, and he was content to ease away from Kenyan runner-up Augustine Choge (7:40.66) some 300 metres from home. “I have a few cuts,” Farah told reporters at the Glasgow Indoor Grand Prix. “I was pushed around but that is racing. It happens. “The most important thing is to
win in front of the home crowd. Now I’ll concentrate on the World Half Marathon Championships [in Cardiff next month] and it would be nice to get another title if I can.” World 200 champion Dafne Schippers provided another highlight, the Dutch flyer winning the 60 metres in an Emirates Arena record 7.10 seconds. Sp rt Suarez, Neymar lead Barca to 2-1 win at Las Palmas
BARCELONA, Spain — Luis Suarez and Neymar scored Palmas striker Willian Jose made it again to lead Barcelona past Las Palmas 2-1 on Saturday, 1-1. Barcelona increased the gap to nine extending their club record to 32 games without a loss and points before second-place Atletico increasing their overnight lead of the Spanish league. Suarez struck six minutes into the match on the Canary Islands, and
Neymar re-established the visitors’ advantage before halftime after Las
Madrid hosts fourth-place Villarreal on Sunday, when Real Madrid visits Malaga trailing the pacesetter by 10.
On course to retain the domestic title, the reigning European champion returns to the Champions League on Tuesday with a visit to Arsenal to start the round of 16. But to win their eighth Liga match in a row, Barcelona needed Las Palmas to miss two clear chances when a late push by the club in danger of falling back into the second division came up empty. “In order to win titles, you have to pull out games like these,” Suarez said. “We have had a tougher time away from home but we take away the three points and have to be happy.” Suarez raised his competitionleading tally to 25 goals in as many rounds while Neymar notched his 18th league goal of the campaign. Suarez, Neymar, and Lionel Messi have 36 goals in Barcelona’s last 14 games. Elsewhere, John Guidetti netted a brace before Celta Vigo survived two late goals by Eibar in a 3-2 win to leapfrog the Basque club into sixth place. Espanyol also ended an eightround winless streak by beating Deportivo La Coruna 1-0 thanks to Marco Asensio’s second-half goal, while Sporting Gijon scored from its sole shot on goal by Carlos Castro to escape with a 1-1 draw at Real Betis. Suarez got Barcelona off to a great start when he used a one-touch strike to drill Jordi Alba’s pass into the upBarcelona’s Luis Suarez reacts during a Spanish La Liga soccer match between Las Palmas and Barcelona, at the Gran Canaria stadium in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria island, Spain, Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016.
per corner of the net. Andres Iniesta started the move that led to the opener with a pass to spring Alba down the left flank. But Las Palmas was not deterred and leveled when Jose received Jonthan Viera’s deft pass with the back of his heel, leaving him all alone to size up goalkeeper Claudio Bravo and slot the ball under his outstretched leg. “In games like these when (Barcelona) knows they are much better, they don’t play with the same intensity,” Las Palmas manager Quique Setien said. “We played a great match. But if you make the slightest mistake, you don’t have a chance with the players they have up front.” Las Palmas mustered the occasional threat but first Messi, then Iniesta drew saves fromgoalie Javi Varas before Suarez squandered a Messi free kick with a header that barely missed. Barcelona’s prolific strike trio teamed to restore the lead before halftime when Suarez dribbled past two defenders and passed for Messi to draw a save from Varas that Neymar finished off. Suarez wasted another opportunity four minutes after halftime when he volleyed Dani Alves’ pass directly into Varas, with Bravo then denying Viera. Having failed to build a bigger lead, Barcelona dodged two chances by Las Palmas’ Sergio Araujo to snatch away a draw. The substitute twice sent balls just by the upright in the final minutes. “In the last 10 minutes what we saw was more their effort than our errors,” Barcelona coach Luis Enrique said. “We competed and fought for everything in this match. Ibrahimovic scores 2 and makes 2 as PSG routs Reims 4-1
PARIS — Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored twice and set up two more as runaway leader Paris SaintGermain beat Reims 4-1 to remain 24 points clear of second-place Monaco on Saturday. Ibrahimovic has 23 league goals in just 21 games, and is on course to beat his careerbest season tally of 30, which he set three seasons ago with PSG. He is already the club’s all-time leading scorer with 136 in all competitions, and needs just two more
league goals to reach 100. He has also been creating them, and he set up right back Gregory van der Wiel and strike partner Edinson Cavani for goals in the first half. Midfielder Prince Oniangue replied for Reims. Monaco beat last-place Troyes 3-1, with striker Guido Carrillo scoring twice. Earlier, PSG took the lead early as Van der Wiel latched onto a pass behind the defense from Ibrahimovic and beat goalkeeper Johann
Carrasso. Reims equalized against the run of play when PSG’s defense dealt with a free kick poorly and Oniangue shot past goalkeeper Kevin Trapp from close range. But it was business as usual at Parc des Princes, with Ibrahimovic and Cavani scoring in quick succession to make it 3-1 by the break. Ibrahimovic pounced following a goal-mouth scramble, and Cavani, scorer of PSG’s winner
against Chelsea in the Champions League on Tuesday, struck on the stroke of halftime. Ibrahimovic made it 4-1 midway through the second half, with Van der Wiel returning the favor with a cross to the back post. There was almost time for a fifth goal as Ibrahimovic again turned provider for Cavani, but his volley from just outside the penalty area was well saved by Carrasso. Before the game, Ezequiel
Lavezzi bid goodbye to the home fans. The Argentina winger, who scored 22 goals in 107 league games for PSG, is leaving to join Hebei China Fortune in the Chinese Super League. In other games, it was: Lorient 4, Guingamp 3, Angers 2, Montpellier 3, and Toulouse 1, Ajaccio 1. In Sunday’s games, Marseille hosts Saint-Etienne, Caen faces Rennes, and improving Lyon travels to play Lille. (ap)

Watching Mourinho inspires Inter to 3-1 win over Sampdoria
MILAN — Inspired by Jose Mourinho in the stands, Inter Milan got back to winning ways in style, beating Sampdoria 3-1 to move to within one point of third place in Serie A on Saturday.

West Brom captain is ‘disgusted’ after being hit by coin
READING — West Bromwich Albion captain Chris Brunt said he feels “absolutely disgusted and ashamed” after being hit near his left eye from a coin thrown by one of the team’s supporters following an FA Cup match on Saturday. Brunt went over to applaud the West Brom fans after the team’s 3-1 loss at Reading in the fifth round on Saturday. He went down clutching his face, and then confronted a group of supporters before being led away by match stewards and a teammate. Brunt later spoke to the BBC with a cut under his eye, saying: “They thought it was OK to throw a coin at their own players. I’m disgusted . they paid a lot of money to come, but a small minority spoilt it.” The English Football Association said it was investigating the incident, as well as crowd disturbances among West Brom fans. “We strongly condemn any such behavior,” the FA said in a statement, “and will work with both clubs and the authorities to identify those responsible.” (ap)
Inter moved to a point behind Fiorentina, which visits Atalanta on Sunday. Roma, which is a point behind Inter, hosts Palermo. “When things aren’t going well, every match becomes complicated and difficult,” Inter coach Roberto Mancini said. “It was important for us to win to not drop too far off third place. In these times you need to try to give something extra and that’s what we did. “This is a group of splendid lads who are upset at what we’re going through but we will get out of it together.” Former Inter coach Mourinho was at San Siro to watch his old team for the first time since leading the Nerazzurri to the treble in 2010. The fans offered him only a lukewarm applause before the match, while giving Mancini a standing ovation, reserving their show of appreciation for Mourinho for halftime. They chanted his name for almost the entire interval and displayed a choreography dedicated to him, with giant images of the three trophies and the words “For every day, every instant, ev-
ery moment ... thank you forever Jose.” Former star Ronaldo did not get as warm a reception and there was even a banner criticizing the former Brazil striker, who departed to Real Madrid in 2002 before joining Inter’s fierce rival AC Milan. Earlier, bottom club Hellas Verona beat Chievo Verona 3-1 in the Derby della Scala for only its second win all season. Sampdoria dominated the opening stages but Inter took the lead when Jeison Murillo headed on a corner for the unmarked D’Ambrosio to volley in at the back post. D’Ambrosio almost went from hero to villain 15 minutes later when he blocked a Joaquin Correa shot with his arm but the referee waved away Samp’s strong penalty appeals. Joao Miranda headed Inter 2-0 up after halftime, with goal-line technology — which has been introduced this season — proving Emiliano Viviano’s save was too late to prevent Miranda from scoring his first goal in Italy. Icardi rounded off the victory, sprinting clear from just inside his
own half before sending a low shot into the bottom right corner. Fabio Quagliarella netted a consolation for Samp in stoppage time with his first goal since returning to the club on transfer deadline day. In Verona, Artur Ionita sealed the home side’s win in stoppage time, curling a spectacular effort into the top left corner. Verona took the lead after it was awarded a penalty for a Nicolas Spolli foul on Luca Toni. Toni saw his spot kick saved but tucked the rebound into the other corner. The hosts doubled their lead shortly before the hour, when Giampaolo Pazzini’s low effort from a Mohamed Fares cross was deflected into the bottom right corner. Sergio Pellissier got Chievo back into the game by converting a dubious penalty after Vangelis Moras was sent off for a second yellow card following a tussle with Roberto Inglese. Chievo was also reduced to 10 men eight minutes later when Spolli was dismissed for a second booking. Verona remained bottom, seven points below 17th-place Sampdoria. (ap)
United States, Canada book Rio Olympic berths
Striker Alex Morgan scored a hat-trick as the United States booked a place in the Rio Olympic women’s soccer tournament with a 5-0 demolition of Trinidad and Tobago in a semi-final at the CONCACAF qualifying tournament in Houston on Friday. Canada, boosted by two goals from Christine Sinclair, also earned a ticket to Rio with a 3-1 win over Costa Rica in the other semi-final. The U.S. and Canada will meet in Sunday’s final, but the mission has already been accomplished by both teams, with Olympic qualifying the top priority. The U.S. have dominated Olympic women’s soccer, winning four of the five gold medals since the event was added to the programme in 1996. Their only loss came in the final against Norway in 2000. The Americans were barely tested on Friday by a completely outclassed Trinidad and Tobago team grappling with a porous defence. In the early game, Sinclair was the star of the show for

I lost in the semi-finals of both tournaments and just have to look forward to Indian Wells.” Cuevas will meet another unseeded player in Guido Pella in the claycourt final after the Argentine’s 6-1 6-4 humbling of fifth seed Dominic Thiem, who beat Nadal in the semi-finals in Buenos Aires
last week. World number five Nadal, who failed to win a grand slam title last year for the first time since 2004, entered the season positive after an injury-free off-season but was dumped out of the first round of the Australian Open and has struggled to return to his best form since. (rtr)

Expression of devotion to escort ancestors to Nirvana

(rtr)

(rtr)

In order to be able to visit the springs at Guyangan hamlet, Batukandik village, visitors must cover a distance of about 25 kilometers from the Port of Nusa Penida. While at Guyangan, visitors are greeted by hundreds of stairs leading to the spring. Adrenaline is encouraged when stepping down the stairs on the towering cliffs with a distance of about 150 meters. When getting near the spring, the pounding sound of waves will be heard. Headman of Batukandik, I Wayan Katon, said that the springs have been visited by many travelers from three years ago. “This resort is challenging, but the view is incredible. COVER STORY waste ... From page 1
(kmb12)

Director Gianfranco Rosi poses with his daughter Emma (L) after receiving the Golden Bear - Best Film award for the movie ‘Fuocoammare’ (Fire at Sea) during the awards ceremony at the 66th Berlinale International Film Festival in Berlin, Germany, February 20, 2016.
those who risked their lives to escape war and poverty, and to the people of Lampedusa who welcomed them.
