LOS ANGELES - Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling’s new movie “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” enchanted the North American box office over the weekend, taking in around $62.2 million, industry tracker Exhibitor Relations said Monday.

Andreas Ahrens, curator and museum director of the Disgusting Food Museum, poses for a picture with Natto, fermented soybeans from Japan, presented in the Disgusting Food Museum on November 7, 2018 in Malmo, Sweden.

Maggots, licorice and cobra hearts at Sweden’s ‘Disgusting Food Museum’ MALMO - Cheese teeming with squirming maggots, sheep’s eye juice and mouse wine: the “Disgusting Food Museum” explores why a dish seems delicious to some, but for others is stomachchurning. On show for three months at an old slaughterhouse in the southern Swedish city of Malmo, the exhibit -- created by Samuel West, who previously served up the Museum of Failure -- promises to shock the senses. “Disgust is always subjective because it comes with what we grew up with. It’s kind of an indoctrination,” says museum director Andreas Ahrens. “If we grew up with something, we don’t find it disgusting,” he says. To highlight the point, the exhibition puts foods from around the world on an equal footing, so

lobster and foie gras are presented in the same way as chewy kiddie sweets and rabbits’ heads. Gastronomic explorers are warned on entry: the exhibit is not for the squeamish. But, conveniently, the entry ticket is -- a sickness bag. Bag in hand then, visitors venture off on a world tour of specialities, some of which may seem to a Western palate like ingredients in a witch’s brew but are considered delicacies. “The Disgusting Food Museum exists to let people explore the world of food and to see both their own food and (other food) from the lens of another culture,” says Ahrens. Its founder “began by thinking of other museums that don’t exist that he would like to visit, and that led to the Disgusting Food Museum,” he adds cheerfully. (afp)

This second Harry Potter prequel came in slightly behind the first “Fantastic Beasts” movie, which earned $74.4 million in its opening three-day weekend, but it has already scored an impressive $253.2 million overseas. Warner Bros. plans three more “Beasts” movies. Written by Rowling and directed by David Yates, “Grindelwald” stars Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander as he works with Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) to take down the evil Gellert Grindelwald, played with typical panache by Johnny Depp. In a rare weekend when neither horror

nor superhero movies dominated, second place went to family-friendly “The Grinch” from Universal, which tallied $38.6 million. The ever-popular Dr. Seuss tale has Benedict Cumberbatch voicing the ill-tempered green title character, with support from Rashida Jones, Kenan Thompson and Angela Lansbury. In third spot, with $16 million in ticket

sales, was Fox’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” the foot-stomping biopic about Freddie Mercury and rock group Queen. Rami Malek has drawn strong reviews for his portrayal of the British singer/songwriter. Fourth went to new Paramount release “Instant Family,” starring Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne as a married couple who take in three foster kids over the holidays. It earned $14.5 million and has drawn an “A” rating from audiences polled by CinemaScore. In fifth was Fox’s “Widows,” at $12.4 million. Directed by Steve McQueen of “12 Years a Slave” fame, it stars Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez and Elizabeth Debicki as a group of women who try to pull off a heist after their husbands are killed in a botched robbery. Memories are still painfully fresh of the volcano’s eruption in June, which swept away villages and left nearly 200 people dead and 235 missing. The Institute of Volcanology’s director Pablo Oliva said the volcano’s activity level had dropped significantly by late Monday. A spokesman for Guatemala’s disaster management agency CONRED had earlier said it decided to evacuate the municipality

of Escuintla and two other districts. Some 4,000 people were taken to temporary shelters as a precaution. The spokesman, David de Leon, said the eruption became increasingly violent after it began Sunday morning, leading to fears for the safety of the thousands of people who live on the slopes of the 3,763 meter-high (12,246 feet) mountain. A column of ash rose about

1,000 meters above the crater and areas west of the volcano -- 35 kilometers (22 miles) from Guatemala City -- were under a barrage of gas ash and fiery rocks, CONRED said. As the volcano’s activity fell back to normal parameters, evacuees were asked for the sake of cautiousness to return home on Tuesday by bus. A previous eruption on October 12-13 was characterized by increasingly loud booms and lava

flow. On that occasion, 62 people were evacuated from their homes as a precaution and a highway around the mountain was closed. Many of those evacuated on Monday said they had feared a repeat of the deadly June eruption. “We were scared and that’s why we evacuated,” said Miriam Garcia, from the village of El Rodeo which was largely spared the deadly eruption. Oscar Juarez from El Rodeo said: “You have to get out as soon as possible because when that (volcanic material) comes close, you no longer have time to leave,

even if you run, because it comes very fast.” Activity inside Guatemala’s two other volcanoes, Pacaya and Santiaguito, has increased in recent months but they have not entered the eruptive phase.
