Malaysian protesters march against Prime Minister Najib KUALA LUMPUR - Tens of thousands of protesters, undeterred by the arrests of opposition leaders, marched in Malaysia’s capital on Saturday demanding that Prime Minister Najib Razak step down. Protesters clad in yellow shirts marched through the heart of Kuala Lumpur bringing traffic to a standstill in several tourist spots, wrapping up peacefully in front of the iconic Petronas Twin Towers after an initial plan to assemble at Independence Square was thwarted by police. Najib has faced criticism since the Wall Street Journal reported last year that around $700 million from state fund 1Malaysia Development
Berhad (1MDB) was diverted into the personal bank account of the prime minister. Najib ran into further trouble when lawsuits filed by the U.S. Justice Department in July said over $3.5 billion was stolen from 1MDB, which was founded by Najib, and that some of those funds flowed into the accounts of “Malaysian Official 1”, whom U.S. and Malaysian officials have identified as Najib. The demonstration is unlikely to shake the prime minister, who has denied wrongdoing and weathered the crisis, consolidating power by cracking down on dissenters. Eleven activists and opposition leaders were arrested on Friday and at least two more were detained at the rally. The
deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said there could be more arrests in the coming days. Maria Chin Abdullah, the chair of pro-democracy group Bersih that organised the rally, was detained under Malaysia’s Security Offences (Special Measures) Act, or Sosma, her lawyers said. Hoteliers offer shared management with local govt Lately, the issue of waste on the beach is mostly triggered by marine debris washed away by streams emptying out on some coastal locations in Buleleng. The addition of waste volume from rivers occurs when entering rainy season like these days. Besides, the waste on the beach is still found scattered due to the behavior of people throwing waste at riverbanks or accidentally throw to the beach. In the meantime, coastal waste is triggered by the activities both on land and at sea frequently found littering coral reef area or floating on the sea surface. One of the coastal areas are often littered by waste is Penimbangan Beach at Baktiseraga village, Buleleng. The coastal area currently starting to be visited local travelers is still facing waste problem. Independent waste handling begins to be conducted by groups of fishermen group with seaside stall owners. Though with modest tools, they managed to keep the beach environment clean from marine debris washed away by ocean currents or streams emptying out on the beach.
However, they cannot afford to keep the wider area because of restricted operating costs and infrastructure. Assistance was already proposed to relevant agency, but unfortunately it has not been fulfilled. Similar endeavor has also been carried out by management of hotels or restaurants at some locations in Buleleng. However, the handling is just focused on the area of their tourist accommodation and the waste outside the area has not been handled properly. The endeavor is not optimal so that it often results in protests from local and foreign travelers or travel agencies. Other than protests, travelers or other parties openly complained about the inconvenience on coastal environment in Buleleng via email to hoteliers and restaurateurs in the area. This was recognized by Dwi, a hotel manager at Lovina. When met on Friday (Nov. 18) he lately received complaints about waste problem that cannot be handled properly. They do not just protest, but some complain that they are uncomfortable when making a visit because the beach is littered by plas-
tic waste, shattered bottle or animal carcass. “Lately, businesspeople and we also often receive complaints about waste on the beach from travelers. We cannot deny because in reality the waste is still littering our beaches,” he said. According to this man from Jembrana, the sanitation especially in the hotel or restaurant area has been well maintained by the respective employers. It is done by assigning employees to clean up the area of the beach every day. As for the area outside the hotel or restaurant area, the waste man-
agement requires the participation of community members together with relevant agencies in local government and other institutions at administrative and customary village. “We carry out beach cleanup by assigning our staff alternately from 06:00 until 18:00. At particular time, we also perform with the PHRI along the Lovina Beach,” he explained. To move sustainable handling, Dwi offered cooperation of tourism entrepreneurs, community leaders at fishermen village and relevant agencies to conduct coastal sanitation in
a sustainable manner. Moreover, if it requires operating costs, it can be agreed upon by tourism players by becoming donors through the corporate social responsibility program. “If charged to the government, I am sure it cannot. We have an idea to handle the waste problem through mutual assistance with the government, employers and the communities. I have confidence if the waste is handled sustainably, the coastal environment will be comfortable and can dismiss the protest of travelers assessing the beach in Buleleng is dirty,” he said. (kmb38)

Executive Manager of the Gilimanuk Harbor, Ni Komang Yuliani, told reporters on Friday (Nov. 18) that despite the crossing remains to run normally, vigilance of skippers is still required. When bad weather occurs and harms, the crossing will
be closed. In addition to strong winds accompanied with high waves, they must also watch out for heavy rains that can happen any time. When it rains, visibility at sea will get disturbed especially at night. Skippers are still asked to remain standby and turn on their radio for 24 hours. Any time when a problem occurs, the
harbor authority of Gilimanuk will coordinate with the ship. According to Yuliani, the current wind speed in the Bali Strait lies in the average of 5 to 14 knots per hour or still normal. Currently, the harbor operates 45 passenger ships (KMP) in three mobile dock bridges (MB) I, II, III, pontoon and the landing craft machine (LCM) pier. (kmb26)

Buleleng declares school literacy movement SINGARAJA - Central government issued a policy to foster reading interest among schools through literacy movement. The policy set forth in the Regulation of the Minister of Education and Culture No.23/2015 is followed up by schools in Buleleng by declaring School Literacy Movement. The declaration followed by the principals in Buleleng was centered at the SMAN Bali Mandara high school in Kubutambahan, Friday (Nov. 18). The declaration was at-
tended by the Head of the Buleleng Education Agency, Gede Suyasa, and Chairman of the Indonesian Teachers Association (PGRI) of Buleleng, Nyoman Darta. Gede Suyasa said that every school is expected to organize school literacy movement to increase the reading interest considered to decrease lately. Hopefully, this movement could be done in a systematic, massive and structured manner, so that reading is not just a habit but also a culture at schools
concerned. Suyasa pointed out that the movement can be initiated by requiring students to read books or articles at least 15 minutes before starting the learning activity. To support this movement, schools have to prepare a representative school library. “They should not necessary consist of textbooks, but our students can read fiction books, journals, newspaper clippings and articles,” he said. On the other hand, Suyasa said that in line with this policy, every
school, especially elementary school, is expected to continuously increase their book collections to support school literacy movement. This can be realized by utilizing the school operating funds (BOS). Five percent of which shall be used to purchase books, so that the fund could support the literacy movement in the long term. “The library is physical aspect, but our target at the discretion of central government is meant to change the reading habit into the culture of students at school,” he said.
In the meantime, Chairman of the PGRI Buleleng, Nyoman Darta, said the school literacy movement was started at the SMAN Bali Mandara in 2012. The SMAN Bali Mandara does not only require the entire school community to read for 15 minutes, but also create a reading habit among students at least for 30 minutes. Besides, this habit has led to the willingness of students to prepare a research, scientific experiments or doing things for entrepreneurship. (kmb38)
Fishermen still lack attention as indicated by minimal govt. aid SEMARAPURA - The distirct of Klungkung is home to many fishermen and their canned fish has become quite popular in many regions. Unfortunately, the government of Klungkung has provided very little financial aid or facilities in support of these fishermen. The fate of these fishermen has however finally drawn the attention of a legislator of the Democratic Faction. Democratic party legislator from the Klungkung House of Representatives, I Made Jana, expressed the opinion of his party’s faction
regarding the fate of Klungkung’s fishemen recently.. According to Jana, the potential of the fisheries particularly marine fisheries in Klungkung is huge. This is evident from the 12.5 tons of fish a day that are required by the market, compared to the 2 tons a day that are processed in Klungkung. Fishermen in Klungkung simply do not have the support they need in order to meet this demand. Dspite the massive demand for marine products, many fishemrn in Klungkung have to look for other
work because they do not catch enough fish to make a living. As a result, the demand for fish at the Segara Beach fish auction (TPI) in Kusamba, is supplied by fishermen form other areas such as Karangasem. In addition, frozen fish from Benoa (Denpasar) also supplies the fish auction when fish boiling businesses in Klungkung do not catch enough fish. The Democratic Faction is therefor usrging the government of Klungkung to support their local fishermen so that they can compete with fishermen from
other areas. According to Jana, the volume of fish caught by Klungkung fishermen can be improved by changing the patterns of traditional fishing, increasing the capacity of vessels and by providing training. “Infrastructure needs to be set up to promote this industry” said Jana. The Tegal Besar Beach fishermne’s group has spoken up about the lack of attention from the government. The fishermen group’s leader, I Made Sudira, said that the lack of attention has meant that they
are “ in suspended animation”. Head of the Klungkung Fisheries and Marine Resources (PPK) Agency, I Gusti Ngurah Badiwangsa, could not be reached for comment. Meanwhile monitoring of the electronic procurement service (LPSE) of Klungkung for the projects allocated in the regional budget 2016 there is indication of funds for fishermen, apart from the procurement of a fish boiling building with a budget of IDR 1.25 billion. No regional bylaw, most convenience stores in Buleleng are illegal
SINGARAJA - Convenience store businesses have been popping up al lover Buleleng recently, but most of them are operationg without a permit becaseu the local government has yet to create a regional bylaw (Perda) on permits for modern chain stores. According to data collected in the field last Wednesday (Nov. 16) several convenience stores are operating in nearly all of Buleleng’s nine districts. In fact Bueleleng has the largest number of 24 hours convenience stores. What is more there seems to be no regulation at all as many of these convenience stores are located right next to traditional markets or small stalls run by peole with limited capital. A total of 34 stores have been noted as having permits but these only consiste of building permit (IMB) and trade business permit (SIUP) issued by the integrated licensing office (BPPT) of Buleleng. The owenrs of this stores are free to run their businesses free of obligations to the surrounding communities because there are as of yet no other regulations to which they must comply. Head of the BPPT Buleleng, Putu Karuna, when met at his office on (Nov. 16) admitted thatalmost none of these stores have modern conveniece store permits and added that this have been a problem for a few years now as the issue has not been handled optimally. So far, the BPPT only required the store owners to have a building permit and trade business permit when they want to open their businesses.. The licensing service is in fact free of charge, however few owners are aware of the need to apply such permits. This is evident by the fact that in the last few years as many as 34 of these modern stores have opened with building permits and trade business permits, while the rest do not have these permits and are therefor considered illegal. “So far, many modern stores do not have a special permit but do have building permits and trade business permist. We’d like to affirm here that no modern stores in Buleleng have a special permit for modern stores as in other regions” said Karuna. According to this official from Banyuatis, Banjar subdistrict, the government is unable to control the existing modern stores in the region and the issue has been largely ignored because until now the local government does not have a regional bylaw setting forth the parameters of operation for such modern stores. Currently the only regulation reffered to is regional bylaw No.10/2013 regarding the Regulation, Control and Protection of Traditional Markets, Modern Markets and Supermarkets. Pursuant to this regulation, the government sets forth the location of modern market at 500 meters from traditional markets. This spacing regulation reflects the government’s commitment to protect the continuity of traditional markets so that they remain to survive amid the competition against the modern markets. “We do not have any special regional bylaw regarding permits for modern convenience stores like that of other regions. Currently we just refer to the existing regulations. We only issue a permit, but the matter of tax payments or levies for modern stores is the domain of the revenue services (Dispenda)”, he explained. Karuna did say that in order to issue reprimands and to obtain accurate data about modern convenience stores in the regions, the BPPT will team up with the municipal police in order to conduct inspections of the licensing documents of modern stores in the near future. At least, he said, this endeavor will yields data regarding the number of convenience stores operating in the region as well as the validity and expiratino of permits. “We have already coordinated with the municipal police and will be chcking on the permits of modern convenience stores to ascertain how many have expired permits or do not have any permits at all”, said Karuna. And if I then printed this new image onto dozens of 8x11 sheets of paper and plastered them onto the wall of a gallery, would this image tell a whole other story? and if I then photographed this giant image in the gallery setting and printed this photo into a catalogue, how would you interpret this final image? And then suppose that I was enjoying the process so much that I then photographed the photograph of the photograph from the gallery wall that was printed in the catalogue, printed out this image and then plastered it onto the wall next to the mural I had originally photographed? At what point would you start to question the meaning that an image can have depending on its context and the point of view of the photographer, or question the difference between a sign and a symbol? Lingkara Photo Community has been playing with ideas about the power of photography and will be presenting the results of their preliminary studies in an exhibition entitled “Power Playing”, which Yan Lingkara describes as “photography as an intervention into reality”. The six artists that have been intervening into reality using photography in the manner mentioned above are: Rudi Wesnawa, Isamail Ilmi, Sr Awy, Ida Adi, Candra Mapu Gimblond, Christiana Arum. Each of these photographers have taken their own distinct approach -as it
could be argued that all photographers always are. “Power Playing”, features the outcome of these 6 photographers’ exploration into how photography interacts with our perception of reality, how context and point of view inform meaning but also brings to light the blurry lines that distinguish different art forms from one and other. Photography is often seen less as an art form and more as a straight documentation of reality. However as curator Arif Bagus Prasetyo put it: “photography is not always reliable for accessing the “truth” about reality, because photography only shows ‘how the photographer sees’…photography communicates through objective and subjective factors and thus has never been a purely transparent medium”. Through this monumental yet fragmented format, Power Playing invites us to take notice of the interpretive space that stands between the object being presented and the photographer who presents it. Lingkara Photo Community is a
loose association of photography lovers dedicated to exploring all sorts of blurry lines. Experimentation with different media for photographs (printing onto wood, glass etc), different thematic concepts surrounding photography , and different subjects for photographs, Lingkara also holds smaller monthly exhibitions to share the results of these explorations. “Lingkara Photcoffee’ is the name given to their weekly focussed group discussions in which lines between photography and any number of apparently unrelated subjects are also blurred, often yielding informative results for all concerned. Although Linkgara Community is a non-profit organization dedicated to exploring and expanding all things photographic, they also have a business division known as “Lingkara Store’, designed to generate income for further photographic experimentation. Lingkara Store is a physical place where a number of locally produced eco-friendly products are sold and is also a conceptual ‘store’ that organizes and produces merchandise for all sorts of commercial and private events. Police officials said about 20 people were still missing as authorities were trying to ascertain what caused 14 carriages of the train travelling between the northeastern city of Patna and the central city of Indore - to suddenly roll off the tracks in Pukhrayan, 65 kilometres south of Kanpur city. Amid scenes of desperation and anguish, survivors were looking for family members and some were also trying to enter the damaged carriages to rescue relatives and collect belongings, said senior railway official Pratap Rai. “We are using every tactic to save lives but it’s very difficult to cut the metal carriages,” Rai said from the accident site. With the death toll set to rise further, the derailment could become India’s worst rail tragedy since 2005, when a train was crushed by
a rock and another plunged into a river - each killing more than 100 people. India’s creaking railway system is the world’s fourth largest, ferrying more than 20 million people each day, but it has a poor safety record, with thousands of people dying in accidents every year, including in frequent train derailments. Suresh Prabhu, India’s Railways Minister, said in a tweet the government would immediately investigate the causes of the derailment and promised accountability with the “strictest possible action,” and compensation for the affected passengers. BERLIN - Angela Merkel is set to announce on Sunday she will seek a fourth term as German chancellor in next year’s election, ending months of speculation over whether one of the world’s most powerful women wants to run again after 11 years in office. The 62-year-old conservative is widely seen as a stabilising force in Europe at a time of uncertainty after Britain’s vote to leave the European Union and the election of Donald Trump as the next U.S. president. On Sunday afternoon, she meets other leaders of her Christian Democrats (CDU) in Berlin to prepare for a party conference in December, the last before the election. She has called a news conference for 1800 GMT, a sign interpreted by politicians and the media that she has made up her mind. A pragmatist, Merkel has steered Europe’s biggest economy through
the financial crisis and the euro zone debt crisis and has won respect internationally U.S. President Barack Obama on Thursday described her as an “outstanding” ally. However, her decision last year to open Germany’s borders to around 900,000 migrants, mostly from war zones in the Middle East, angered many voters and hit her personal ratings. Her party has slumped in regional elections in the last year while support for the anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany (AfD) has swelled. In September, after a heavy defeat for the CDU in a Berlin state election, a humbled Merkel surprised the country by saying she wished she could turn the clock back on the migrant crisis, though she stopped short of saying her policy was a mistake. Polls put her conservative bloc around 10 points ahead of its nearest rivals, the Social Democrats (SPD), with whom she shares power. Many pollsters see another ‘grand coalition’ as the most likely option after the September election, although the rise of the AfD makes coalition arithmetic more complicated. By standing again, Merkel could end up matching the 16 years in office of her former mentor, Helmut Kohl. It was Merkel herself who broke with Kohl and told her party in 1999, in the midst of a funding scandal, that it should move on without him. BUSINESS China pledges further opening as leaders scramble for free trade
LIMA - Chinese President Xi Jinping pledged to open the economy further on Saturday as leaders of Asia-Pacific countries sought new freetrade options following Donald Trump’s election to U.S. president on promises to scrap or renegotiate trade deals. All eyes were on China at this year’s APEC summit in Lima, Peru just over a week after Trump’s surprise victory in the United States dashed hopes of the largestever U.S.-proposed trade deal, the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), coming to fruition. U.S. President Barack Obama has championed the TPP as a way to counter China’s rise, but he has now stopped trying to win congressional approval for the deal signed by 12 economies in the Americas and Asia-Pacific, excluding China. Without U.S. approval the current agreement cannot be implemented. Trump campaigned against the TPP and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) as bad for U.S. jobs. He said he would scrap the TPP and threatened to impose tariffs on imports from China and Mexico. Following a meeting with Obama, Xi said Beijing’s relationship with Washington was at a “hinge moment” and called for a smooth transition. Xi has been selling an alternate vision for regional trade by promoting the Beijing-backed Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), which as it stands excludes the Americas. “China will not shut its door to the outside world but open more,” Xi said in a keynote address at APEC. “We’re going to...make sure the fruits of development are shared.” Chinese attendance at the APEC meeting was its largest ever and regional delegates said China would take the lead on trade if the U.S. turned toward protectionism. The Obama administration has warned that the RCEP would not include strong protections for workers, the environment or intellectual property. In Lima on his last scheduled trip abroad as president, Obama said the United States worked to include labor provisions in a U.S.-

Key said TPP members might be able to incorporate “cosmetic changes” to make the deal more palatable to the real estate magnate and former reality TV star. “The Trump Pacific Partnership for instance, that’d be fine,” Key said, laughing. Despite China’s overtures, some APEC members
were determined to press on with TPP and held out hopes the United States would still show leadership on trade. “Our geopolitical position is with the United States, obviously,” Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto said. “That’s where our eyes are set and that’s what we are working for.” Pena Nieto said the NAFTA pact between the United States, Mexico and Canada should be “modernized,” noting that issues relating to labor rules and the environment were among those that could be included in such talks - two areas Mexico had believed it could update with the United States via TPP. Tidal power developers bet on sea change in Indonesia renewables sector
JAKARTA - A well-connected Indonesian marine renewable energy company and OpenHydro, a unit of French state-owned naval defence company DCNS, aim to be the first to plug into the vast untapped tidal energy potential of the world’s biggest archipelago. Renewables have so far played little part in Indonesia’s power sector, despite the country sitting on the world’s biggest geothermal reserves and being bathed in sunshine, crowded out by an abundance of cheap coal and bureaucratic bottlenecks. But declining costs of renewable electricity and a new push by President Joko Widodo to develop renewables in the remote eastern parts of the archipelago are changing the picture. With narrow straits straddling the Indian and Pacific oceans, Indonesia has significant tidal power potential, and PT Arus Indonesia Raya (AIR) and OpenHydro plan to build the country’s first such project. “This project is important for Indonesia and the world so we can stop burning coal,” AIR president director Panji Adhikumoro Soeharto told Reuters.
OpenHydro, a company specialising in the design and manufacture of marine turbines to generate renewable energy from tidal streams, already has projects in Japan, Britain, France and Canada. The AIR and OpenHydro model would appeal to renewable energy investors because it is relatively inexpensive and low in maintenance compared with other renewables, said Soeharto, grandchild of former Indonesian president Suharto. “We’re doing the investment ourselves, with banks,” he said. He did not say how much had been invested so far. According to the partners, Indonesia has the potential for up to 60 gigawatts of tidal power, more than Indonesia’s total electricity capacity of just over 50 gigawatts last year. Land and permitting issues that often hold up power infrastructure
projects should be no obstacle for AIR, Soeharto said, referring to plans to build a factory in Indonesia and utilise 70 percent local content in their turbines. The turbines, which sit on the seabed, can cost up to $7 million each in Europe, a cost PT AIR plans to slash to as little as $4 million, Soeharto said. “The only thing we can’t produce is the magnets - French technology. Maybe in future we’ll study this.” Over the next three years, the two companies plan to develop up to 20 2-megawatt turbines in a pilot tidal array in the Bali strait, which will supply power directly to state energy company Pertamina, Soeharto said. According to a release on the DCNS website, the Indonesian project is targeted to reach 300MW of installed capacity by 2023. TURNING TIDE? Indonesia wants renewable energy to make up around a quarter of its total by 2025 from around 5 percent now, though critics have questioned its seriousness in meeting its climate goals, and its overall
plans to ramp up power production have got off to a slow start. Yet attitudes toward renewable energy among Asian investors are changing as costs come down and environmental pressures mount, a Singapore-based hedge fund manager told Reuters. Over the past two years the cost of producing solar and onshore wind power had begun to reach a level where it was competitive with fossil fuels, below 10 cents per kilowatt hour, he said. “It is beginning to happen.” India and China, Indonesia’s two biggest coal buyers, are accelerating the global transformation from coal to cleaner energy sources. Some of Indonesia’s biggest coal miners, such as state-owned Bukit Asam and Adaro, are also diversifying into renewables. “Renewable energy is a must. It’s no longer an option. We don’t have any choice,” recently appointed deputy energy minister Arcandra Tahar said at a forum in Jakarta last week. While incentives will be needed
to kickstart renewable developments in Indonesia, on a per-kilowatt-hour basis they may already be cheaper than the diesel that many remote islands currently rely on for power, Tahar said. By assisting state electricity company Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) to develop renewable energy, Indonesia could phase out diesel use and reduce its costly fuel subsidy bill, Tahar said, adding that his office was making this a priority over the next three years. “Our focus now is on providing incentives and regulating prices that are acceptible to all sides,” Dadan Kusdiana, secretary at the Renewable Energy Directorate, told Reuters. A spokesman for PLN said it was “wide open” to developing hybrid power systems in remote areas, combining renewables with traditional generators to guarantee electricity is available 24 hours a day. “We have to be oriented so that we reduce the cost of electricity,” PLN spokesman Made Suprateka told Reuters.(rtr)

S.Korea prosecutors say President Park was accomplice in corruption scandal
SEOUL - South Korean prosecutors said on Sunday that they believed President Park Geun-hye was an accomplice in a corruption scandal that has rocked her administration, in a heavy blow to her fight for political survival. The prosecutors’ comments, which came as they indicted a close friend of Park’s and two of her former aides, are likely to spur stronger calls for her to step down or be impeached. Park’s close friend Choi Soonsil and former presidential aide An Chong-bum were charged with abuse of power by pressuring companies to contribute funds to foundations at the centre of the scandal, said Lee Young-ryeol, head of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office. “The special investigation team concluded that based on the evidence secured to date, the president was in complicity with Choi Soon-sil, An Chong-bum and Jeong Ho-seong to a considerable degree,” Lee told a news conference. Jeong, also one of Park’s former aides, was indicted for leaking classified information to Choi. Park’s lawyer Yoo Yeong-ha rejected the asssertion that she was involved, calling it an “imagina-
tion” and saying prosecutors “have built a house of fantasy.” Presidential Blue House spokesman Jung Youn-kuk said the prosecutors’ announcement was “deeply regrettable.” “The special investigation team made a claim as if the president has committed a grave crime when it announced the result of its investigation,” Jung said. “The announcement is not truth at all and but a house of cards built on repeated imagination and speculation that completely ignores objective evidence.” Park cannot be indicted because she has constitutional immunity, prosecutor Lee said, but added: “We will continue to investigate the president,” without elaborating. Under the constitution, a sitting president cannot be indicted unless on charges of treason, but the conclusion by the prosecutors that Park was involved in the case prompted fresh calls from opposition parties for her to step down.
The main opposition Democratic Party and the centrist People’s Party said Park will face impeachment proceedings if she refuses to resign. But they stopped short of saying they would immediately initiate such a move. Analysts said the prosecutors’ comments about Park’s role increased the prospect that she would face impeachment. “It provided a legal basis for impeachment proceedings, not only her moral and political liabilities,” said Kim Jun-seok, a political science professor at Dongguk University in Seoul. Park is unlikely to voluntarily step down because she would lose immunity against prosecution, Kim said. Her five-year term ends in February 2018. “Then, the only option that is left for politicians given the worsening public sentiment is impeachment,” he said. Park has resisted calls to resign over the scandal but has publicly apologised twice, saying that it was caused by her shortcomings and that she had sought help from the business community in the belief it would benefit the economy, not for personal gain. Fears of clashes between Bersih and a pro-Najib group called Red Shirts mounted earlier this week after the latter threatened to target Bersih supporters, though no major clashes were reported on Saturday. The pro-Najib group also rallied on Saturday and police estimated that about 2,500 supporters of Najib turned up. Jamal Yunos, an UMNO member and leader of the Red Shirts, was arrested on Friday. NORTH CAROLINA - Mexico’s Daniel Suarez became NASCAR’s first foreign-born champion on Saturday by winning the season-long Xfinity Series. The 24-year-old won the final race of the season at the Homestead-Miami Speedway in south Florida to clinch the overall title. “I’m just very proud of everyone and thankful to have the family that I have,” Suarez said after clinching the title in front of his parents. “My mom, my dad, they gave me all the tools to be here right now. They put me in a car even when we didn’t have the support or the racing background. BARCELONA - Cristiano Ronaldo ensured Atletico Madrid fans will have bitter memories of the last local derby at the Vicente Calderon stadium by scoring a hat-trick in a 3-0 win for La Liga leaders Real Madrid on Saturday. Ronaldo’s deflected free kick put Real in charge in the 23rd minute in the first meeting of the teams since the Champions League final in May. The prolific Portuguese killed off Atletico’s resistance by winning and converting a penalty in the 71st minute and capped a harrowing night for the home side by tapping in the third in the 77th. It was Real’s first league win over their city rivals since 2013 while Ronaldo’s treble took him to the top of the league’s scoring list on eight goals along with Barcelona pair Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez. Real are top of the table with 30 points from 12 matches, four above Barcelona after the champions were held to a goalless draw at home to Malaga who finished the game with nine men. Atletico are nine points adrift of Real in fifth while Sevilla are third on 24 after beating Deportivo La Coruna 3-2. The Madrid derby took on extra significance for being the last league

Mexican Suarez makes history with NASCAR title
NORTH CAROLINA - Mexico’s Daniel Suarez became NASCAR’s first foreign-born champion on Saturday by winning the season-long Xfinity Series. The 24-year-old won the final race of the season at the Homestead-Miami Speedway in south Florida to clinch the overall title. “I’m just very proud of everyone and thankful to have the family that I have,” Suarez said after clinching the title in front of his parents. “My mom, my dad, they gave me all the tools to be here right now. They put me in a car even when we didn’t have the support or the racing background. They supported me and right now we are just living a dream. “It’s still hard to believe this.” Suarez was born in Monterrey and started racing carts before moving to North Carolina as a teenager to pursue his career. S.Korea prosecutors say President Park was accomplice in corruption scandal
SEOUL - South Korean prosecutors said on Sunday that they believed President Park Geun-hye was an accomplice in a corruption scandal that has rocked her administration, in a heavy blow to her fight for political survival. The prosecutors’ comments, which came as they indicted a close friend of Park’s and two of her former aides, are likely to spur stronger calls for her to step down or be impeached. Park’s close friend Choi Soonsil and former presidential aide An Chong-bum were charged with abuse of power by pressuring companies to contribute funds to foundations at the centre of the scandal, said Lee Young-ryeol, head of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office. “The special investigation team concluded that based on the evidence secured to date, the president was in complicity with Choi Soon-sil, An Chong-bum and Jeong Ho-seong to a considerable degree,” Lee told a news conference. Jeong, also one of Park’s former aides, was indicted for leaking classified information to Choi. Park’s lawyer Yoo Yeong-ha rejected the asssertion that she was involved, calling it an “imagina-
tion” and saying prosecutors “have built a house of fantasy.” Presidential Blue House spokesman Jung Youn-kuk said the prosecutors’ announcement was “deeply regrettable.” “The special investigation team made a claim as if the president has committed a grave crime when it announced the result of its investigation,” Jung said. “The announcement is not truth at all and but a house of cards built on repeated imagination and speculation that completely ignores objective evidence.” Park cannot be indicted because she has constitutional immunity, prosecutor Lee said, but added: “We will continue to investigate the president,” without elaborating. Under the constitution, a sitting president cannot be indicted unless on charges of treason, but the conclusion by the prosecutors that Park was involved in the case prompted fresh calls from opposition parties for her to step down.
The main opposition Democratic Party and the centrist People’s Party said Park will face impeachment proceedings if she refuses to resign. But they stopped short of saying they would immediately initiate such a move. Analysts said the prosecutors’ comments about Park’s role increased the prospect that she would face impeachment. “It provided a legal basis for impeachment proceedings, not only her moral and political liabilities,” said Kim Jun-seok, a political science professor at Dongguk University in Seoul. Park is unlikely to voluntarily step down because she would lose immunity against prosecution, Kim said. Her five-year term ends in February 2018. “Then, the only option that is left for politicians given the worsening public sentiment is impeachment,” he said. Park has resisted calls to resign over the scandal but has publicly apologised twice, saying that it was caused by her shortcomings and that she had sought help from the business community in the belief it would benefit the economy, not for personal gain. BUSINESS China pledges further opening as leaders scramble for free trade
LIMA - Chinese President Xi Jinping pledged to open the economy further on Saturday as leaders of Asia-Pacific countries sought new freetrade options following Donald Trump’s election to U.S. president on promises to scrap or renegotiate trade deals. All eyes were on China at this year’s APEC summit in Lima, Peru just over a week after Trump’s surprise victory in the United States dashed hopes of the largestever U.S.-proposed trade deal, the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), coming to fruition. U.S. President Barack Obama has championed the TPP as a way to counter China’s rise, but he has now stopped trying to win congressional approval for the deal signed by 12 economies in the Americas and Asia-Pacific, excluding China. Without U.S. approval the current agreement cannot be implemented. Trump campaigned against the TPP and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) as bad for U.S. jobs. He said he would scrap the TPP and threatened to impose tariffs on imports from China and Mexico. Following a meeting with Obama, Xi said Beijing’s relationship with Washington was at a “hinge moment” and called for a smooth transition. Xi has been selling an alternate vision for regional trade by promoting the Beijing-backed Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), which as it stands excludes the Americas. “China will not shut its door to the outside world but open more,” Xi said in a keynote address at APEC. “We’re going to...make sure the fruits of development are shared.” Chinese attendance at the APEC meeting was its largest ever and regional delegates said China would take the lead on trade if the U.S. turned toward protectionism. The Obama administration has warned that the RCEP would not include strong protections for workers, the environment or intellectual property. were determined to press on with TPP and held out hopes the United States would still show leadership on trade. “Our geopolitical position is with the United States, obviously,” Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto said. “That’s where our eyes are set and that’s what we are working for.” Pena Nieto said the NAFTA pact between the United States, Mexico and Canada should be “modernized,” noting that issues relating to labor rules and the environment were among those that could be included in such talks - two areas Mexico had believed it could update with the United States via TPP. Tidal power developers bet on sea change in Indonesia renewables sector
JAKARTA - A well-connected Indonesian marine renewable energy company and OpenHydro, a unit of French state-owned naval defence company DCNS, aim to be the first to plug into the vast untapped tidal energy potential of the world’s biggest archipelago. Renewables have so far played little part in Indonesia’s power sector, despite the country sitting on the world’s biggest geothermal reserves and being bathed in sunshine, crowded out by an abundance of cheap coal and bureaucratic bottlenecks. But declining costs of renewable electricity and a new push by President Joko Widodo to develop renewables in the remote eastern parts of the archipelago are changing the picture. With narrow straits straddling the Indian and Pacific oceans, Indonesia has significant tidal power potential, and PT Arus Indonesia Raya (AIR) and OpenHydro plan to build the country’s first such project. “This project is important for Indonesia and the world so we can stop burning coal,” AIR president director Panji Adhikumoro Soeharto told Reuters.
OpenHydro, a company specialising in the design and manufacture of marine turbines to generate renewable energy from tidal streams, already has projects in Japan, Britain, France and Canada. The AIR and OpenHydro model would appeal to renewable energy investors because it is relatively inexpensive and low in maintenance compared with other renewables, said Soeharto, grandchild of former Indonesian president Suharto. “We’re doing the investment ourselves, with banks,” he said. He did not say how much had been invested so far. According to the partners, Indonesia has the potential for up to 60 gigawatts of tidal power, more than Indonesia’s total electricity capacity of just over 50 gigawatts last year. Land and permitting issues that often hold up power infrastructure
projects should be no obstacle for AIR, Soeharto said, referring to plans to build a factory in Indonesia and utilise 70 percent local content in their turbines. The turbines, which sit on the seabed, can cost up to $7 million each in Europe, a cost PT AIR plans to slash to as little as $4 million, Soeharto said. “The only thing we can’t produce is the magnets - French technology. Maybe in future we’ll study this.” Over the next three years, the two companies plan to develop up to 20 2-megawatt turbines in a pilot tidal array in the Bali strait, which will supply power directly to state energy company Pertamina, Soeharto said. According to a release on the DCNS website, the Indonesian project is targeted to reach 300MW of installed capacity by 2023. TURNING TIDE? Indonesia wants renewable energy to make up around a quarter of its total by 2025 from around 5 percent now, though critics have questioned its seriousness in meeting its climate goals, and its overall
plans to ramp up power production have got off to a slow start. Yet attitudes toward renewable energy among Asian investors are changing as costs come down and environmental pressures mount, a Singapore-based hedge fund manager told Reuters. Over the past two years the cost of producing solar and onshore wind power had begun to reach a level where it was competitive with fossil fuels, below 10 cents per kilowatt hour, he said. “It is beginning to happen.” India and China, Indonesia’s two biggest coal buyers, are accelerating the global transformation from coal to cleaner energy sources. Some of Indonesia’s biggest coal miners, such as state-owned Bukit Asam and Adaro, are also diversifying into renewables. “Renewable energy is a must. It’s no longer an option. We don’t have any choice,” recently appointed deputy energy minister Arcandra Tahar said at a forum in Jakarta last week. While incentives will be needed
to kickstart renewable developments in Indonesia, on a per-kilowatt-hour basis they may already be cheaper than the diesel that many remote islands currently rely on for power, Tahar said. By assisting state electricity company Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) to develop renewable energy, Indonesia could phase out diesel use and reduce its costly fuel subsidy bill, Tahar said, adding that his office was making this a priority over the next three years. “Our focus now is on providing incentives and regulating prices that are acceptible to all sides,” Dadan Kusdiana, secretary at the Renewable Energy Directorate, told Reuters. A spokesman for PLN said it was “wide open” to developing hybrid power systems in remote areas, combining renewables with traditional generators to guarantee electricity is available 24 hours a day. “We have to be oriented so that we reduce the cost of electricity,” PLN spokesman Made Suprateka told Reuters.(rtr)

No regional bylaw, most convenience stores in Buleleng are illegal
SINGARAJA - Convenience store businesses have been popping up al lover Buleleng recently, but most of them are operationg without a permit becaseu the local government has yet to create a regional bylaw (Perda) on permits for modern chain stores. According to data collected in the field last Wednesday (Nov. 16) several convenience stores are operating in nearly all of Buleleng’s nine districts. In fact Bueleleng has the largest number of 24 hours convenience stores. What is more there seems to be no regulation at all as many of these convenience stores are located right next to traditional markets or small stalls run by peole with limited capital. A total of 34 stores have been noted as having permits but these only consiste of building permit (IMB) and trade business permit (SIUP) issued by the integrated licensing office (BPPT) of Buleleng. The owenrs of this stores are free to run their businesses free of obligations to the surrounding communities because there are as of yet no other regulations to which they must comply. Head of the BPPT Buleleng, Putu Karuna, when met at his office on (Nov. 16) admitted thatalmost none of these stores have modern conveniece store permits and added that this have been a problem for a few years now as the issue has not been handled optimally. So far, the BPPT only required the store owners to have a building permit and trade business permit when they want to open their businesses.. The licensing service is in fact free of charge, however few owners are aware of the need to apply such permits. This is evident by the fact that in the last few years as many as 34 of these modern stores have opened with building permits and trade business permits, while the rest do not have these permits and are therefor considered illegal. “So far, many modern stores do not have a special permit but do have building permits and trade business permist. We’d like to affirm here that no modern stores in Buleleng have a special permit for modern stores as in other regions” said Karuna. According to this official from Banyuatis, Banjar subdistrict, the government is unable to control the existing modern stores in the region and the issue has been largely ignored because until now the local government does not have a regional bylaw setting forth the parameters of operation for such modern stores. Currently the only regulation reffered to is regional bylaw No.10/2013 regarding the Regulation, Control and Protection of Traditional Markets, Modern Markets and Supermarkets. Pursuant to this regulation, the government sets forth the location of modern market at 500 meters from traditional markets. This spacing regulation reflects the government’s commitment to protect the continuity of traditional markets so that they remain to survive amid the competition against the modern markets. “We do not have any special regional bylaw regarding permits for modern convenience stores like that of other regions. Currently we just refer to the existing regulations. We only issue a permit, but the matter of tax payments or levies for modern stores is the domain of the revenue services (Dispenda)”, he explained. Karuna did say that in order to issue reprimands and to obtain accurate data about modern convenience stores in the regions, the BPPT will team up with the municipal police in order to conduct inspections of the licensing documents of modern stores in the near future. At least, he said, this endeavor will yields data regarding the number of convenience stores operating in the region as well as the validity and expiratino of permits. “We have already coordinated with the municipal police and will be chcking on the permits of modern convenience stores to ascertain how many have expired permits or do not have any permits at all”, said Karuna. SUPPOSING I were to take a photo of a public mural or of a picture from a magazine or of a dancer’s performance, and then presented this photo as a factual representation or even as my own art work? Would you read my photograph any differently than the original image? What if I put a printed copy of my photo on a table, and then placed objects on top of it and photographed it again? Would the new image take on a different meaning still? And if I then printed this new image onto dozens of 8x11 sheets of paper and plastered them onto the wall of a gallery, would this image tell a whole other story? and if I then photographed this giant image in the gallery setting and printed this photo into a catalogue, how would you interpret this final image? And then suppose that I was enjoying the process so much that I then photographed the photograph of the photograph from the gallery wall that was printed in the catalogue, printed out this image and then plastered it onto the wall next to the mural I had originally photographed? At what point would you start to question the meaning that an image can have depending on its context and the point of view of the photographer, or question the difference between a sign and a symbol? Lingkara Photo Community has been playing with ideas about the power of photography and will be presenting the results of their preliminary studies in an exhibition entitled “Power Playing”, which Yan Lingkara describes as “photography as an intervention into reality”. The six artists that have been intervening into reality using photography in the manner mentioned above are: Rudi Wesnawa, Isamail Ilmi, Sr Awy, Ida Adi, Candra Mapu Gimblond, Christiana Arum. Each of these photographers have taken their own distinct approach -as it
could be argued that all photographers always are. “Power Playing”, features the outcome of these 6 photographers’ exploration into how photography interacts with our perception of reality, how context and point of view inform meaning but also brings to light the blurry lines that distinguish different art forms from one and other. Photography is often seen less as an art form and more as a straight documentation of reality. However as curator Arif Bagus Prasetyo put it: “photography is not always reliable for accessing the “truth” about reality, because photography only shows ‘how the photographer sees’…photography communicates through objective and subjective factors and thus has never been a purely transparent medium”. Through this monumental yet fragmented format, Power Playing invites us to take notice of the interpretive space that stands between the object being presented and the photographer who presents it. Lingkara Photo Community is a
loose association of photography lovers dedicated to exploring all sorts of blurry lines. Experimentation with different media for photographs (printing onto wood, glass etc), different thematic concepts surrounding photography , and different subjects for photographs, Lingkara also holds smaller monthly exhibitions to share the results of these explorations. “Lingkara Photcoffee’ is the name given to their weekly focussed group discussions in which lines between photography and any number of apparently unrelated subjects are also blurred, often yielding informative results for all concerned. Although Linkgara Community is a non-profit organization dedicated to exploring and expanding all things photographic, they also have a business division known as “Lingkara Store’, designed to generate income for further photographic experimentation. Lingkara Store is a physical place where a number of locally produced eco-friendly products are sold and is also a conceptual ‘store’ that organizes and produces merchandise for all sorts of commercial and private events. Power Playing, curated by Arif Bagus Prasetyo, will officially open on December 20th at 7:30pm with a unique performance of Dangdut songs, opening words by knowledgeable people, high quality locally sourced coffee, bbq corn, boiled peanuts and unforeseen interactions. Police officials said about 20 people were still missing as authorities were trying to ascertain what caused 14 carriages of the train travelling between the northeastern city of Patna and the central city of Indore - to suddenly roll off the tracks in Pukhrayan, 65 kilometres south of Kanpur city. Amid scenes of desperation and anguish, survivors were looking for family members and some were also trying to enter the damaged carriages to rescue relatives and collect belongings, said senior railway official Pratap Rai. “We are using every tactic to save lives but it’s very difficult to cut the metal carriages,” Rai said from the accident site. With the death toll set to rise further, the derailment could become India’s worst rail tragedy since 2005, when a train was crushed by
a rock and another plunged into a river - each killing more than 100 people. India’s creaking railway system is the world’s fourth largest, ferrying more than 20 million people each day, but it has a poor safety record, with thousands of people dying in accidents every year, including in frequent train derailments. Suresh Prabhu, India’s Railways Minister, said in a tweet the government would immediately investigate the causes of the derailment and promised accountability with the “strictest possible action,” and compensation for the affected passengers. Buleleng declares school literacy movement SINGARAJA - Central government issued a policy to foster reading interest among schools through literacy movement. The policy set forth in the Regulation of the Minister of Education and Culture No.23/2015 is followed up by schools in Buleleng by declaring School Literacy Movement. The declaration followed by the principals in Buleleng was centered at the SMAN Bali Mandara high school in Kubutambahan, Friday (Nov. 18). The declaration was at-
tended by the Head of the Buleleng Education Agency, Gede Suyasa, and Chairman of the Indonesian Teachers Association (PGRI) of Buleleng, Nyoman Darta. Gede Suyasa said that every school is expected to organize school literacy movement to increase the reading interest considered to decrease lately. Hopefully, this movement could be done in a systematic, massive and structured manner, so that reading is not just a habit but also a culture at schools
concerned. Suyasa pointed out that the movement can be initiated by requiring students to read books or articles at least 15 minutes before starting the learning activity. To support this movement, schools have to prepare a representative school library. “They should not necessary consist of textbooks, but our students can read fiction books, journals, newspaper clippings and articles,” he said. On the other hand, Suyasa said that in line with this policy, every
school, especially elementary school, is expected to continuously increase their book collections to support school literacy movement. This can be realized by utilizing the school operating funds (BOS). Five percent of which shall be used to purchase books, so that the fund could support the literacy movement in the long term. “The library is physical aspect, but our target at the discretion of central government is meant to change the reading habit into the culture of students at school,” he said.
In the meantime, Chairman of the PGRI Buleleng, Nyoman Darta, said the school literacy movement was started at the SMAN Bali Mandara in 2012. The SMAN Bali Mandara does not only require the entire school community to read for 15 minutes, but also create a reading habit among students at least for 30 minutes. Besides, this habit has led to the willingness of students to prepare a research, scientific experiments or doing things for entrepreneurship. (kmb38)
Fishermen still lack attention as indicated by minimal govt. aid SEMARAPURA - The distirct of Klungkung is home to many fishermen and their canned fish has become quite popular in many regions. Unfortunately, the government of Klungkung has provided very little financial aid or facilities in support of these fishermen. The fate of these fishermen has however finally drawn the attention of a legislator of the Democratic Faction. Democratic party legislator from the Klungkung House of Representatives, I Made Jana, expressed the opinion of his party’s faction
regarding the fate of Klungkung’s fishemen recently.. According to Jana, the potential of the fisheries particularly marine fisheries in Klungkung is huge. This is evident from the 12.5 tons of fish a day that are required by the market, compared to the 2 tons a day that are processed in Klungkung. Fishermen in Klungkung simply do not have the support they need in order to meet this demand. Dspite the massive demand for marine products, many fishemrn in Klungkung have to look for other
work because they do not catch enough fish to make a living. As a result, the demand for fish at the Segara Beach fish auction (TPI) in Kusamba, is supplied by fishermen form other areas such as Karangasem. In addition, frozen fish from Benoa (Denpasar) also supplies the fish auction when fish boiling businesses in Klungkung do not catch enough fish. The Democratic Faction is therefor usrging the government of Klungkung to support their local fishermen so that they can compete with fishermen from
other areas. According to Jana, the volume of fish caught by Klungkung fishermen can be improved by changing the patterns of traditional fishing, increasing the capacity of vessels and by providing training. “Infrastructure needs to be set up to promote this industry” said Jana. The Tegal Besar Beach fishermne’s group has spoken up about the lack of attention from the government. The fishermen group’s leader, I Made Sudira, said that the lack of attention has meant that they
are “ in suspended animation”. Head of the Klungkung Fisheries and Marine Resources (PPK) Agency, I Gusti Ngurah Badiwangsa, could not be reached for comment. Meanwhile monitoring of the electronic procurement service (LPSE) of Klungkung for the projects allocated in the regional budget 2016 there is indication of funds for fishermen, apart from the procurement of a fish boiling building with a budget of IDR 1.25 billion. Hoteliers offer shared management with local govt Lately, the issue of waste on the beach is mostly triggered by marine debris washed away by streams emptying out on some coastal locations in Buleleng. The addition of waste volume from rivers occurs when entering rainy season like these days. Besides, the waste on the beach is still found scattered due to the behavior of people throwing waste at riverbanks or accidentally throw to the beach. In the meantime, coastal waste is triggered by the activities both on land and at sea frequently found littering coral reef area or floating on the sea surface. One of the coastal areas are often littered by waste is Penimbangan Beach at Baktiseraga village, Buleleng. The coastal area currently starting to be visited local travelers is still facing waste problem. Independent waste handling begins to be conducted by groups of fishermen group with seaside stall owners. Though with modest tools, they managed to keep the beach environment clean from marine debris washed away by ocean currents or streams emptying out on the beach.
However, they cannot afford to keep the wider area because of restricted operating costs and infrastructure. Assistance was already proposed to relevant agency, but unfortunately it has not been fulfilled. Similar endeavor has also been carried out by management of hotels or restaurants at some locations in Buleleng. However, the handling is just focused on the area of their tourist accommodation and the waste outside the area has not been handled properly. The endeavor is not optimal so that it often results in protests from local and foreign travelers or travel agencies. Other than protests, travelers or other parties openly complained about the inconvenience on coastal environment in Buleleng via email to hoteliers and restaurateurs in the area. This was recognized by Dwi, a hotel manager at Lovina. When met on Friday (Nov. 18) he lately received complaints about waste problem that cannot be handled properly. They do not just protest, but some complain that they are uncomfortable when making a visit because the beach is littered by plas-
tic waste, shattered bottle or animal carcass. “Lately, businesspeople and we also often receive complaints about waste on the beach from travelers. We cannot deny because in reality the waste is still littering our beaches,” he said. According to this man from Jembrana, the sanitation especially in the hotel or restaurant area has been well maintained by the respective employers. It is done by assigning employees to clean up the area of the beach every day. As for the area outside the hotel or restaurant area, the waste man-
agement requires the participation of community members together with relevant agencies in local government and other institutions at administrative and customary village. “We carry out beach cleanup by assigning our staff alternately from 06:00 until 18:00. At particular time, we also perform with the PHRI along the Lovina Beach,” he explained. To move sustainable handling, Dwi offered cooperation of tourism entrepreneurs, community leaders at fishermen village and relevant agencies to conduct coastal sanitation in
a sustainable manner. Moreover, if it requires operating costs, it can be agreed upon by tourism players by becoming donors through the corporate social responsibility program. “If charged to the government, I am sure it cannot. We have an idea to handle the waste problem through mutual assistance with the government, employers and the communities. I have confidence if the waste is handled sustainably, the coastal environment will be comfortable and can dismiss the protest of travelers assessing the beach in Buleleng is dirty,” he said. (kmb38)

Malaysian protesters march against Prime Minister Najib KUALA LUMPUR - Tens of thousands of protesters, undeterred by the arrests of opposition leaders, marched in Malaysia’s capital on Saturday demanding that Prime Minister Najib Razak step down. Protesters clad in yellow shirts marched through the heart of Kuala Lumpur bringing traffic to a standstill in several tourist spots, wrapping up peacefully in front of the iconic Petronas Twin Towers after an initial plan to assemble at Independence Square was thwarted by police. Najib has faced criticism since the Wall Street Journal reported last year that around $700 million from state fund 1Malaysia Development
Berhad (1MDB) was diverted into the personal bank account of the prime minister. Najib ran into further trouble when lawsuits filed by the U.S. Justice Department in July said over $3.5 billion was stolen from 1MDB, which was founded by Najib, and that some of those funds flowed into the accounts of “Malaysian Official 1”, whom U.S. and Malaysian officials have identified as Najib. The demonstration is unlikely to shake the prime minister, who has denied wrongdoing and weathered the crisis, consolidating power by cracking down on dissenters. Eleven activists and opposition leaders were arrested on Friday and at least two more were detained at the rally. The
deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said there could be more arrests in the coming days. Maria Chin Abdullah, the chair of pro-democracy group Bersih that organised the rally, was detained under Malaysia’s Security Offences (Special Measures) Act, or Sosma, her lawyers said.
