Tom Hanks in Egypt to film ‘Hologram for the King’ Associated Press

CAIRO — Hollywood star Tom Hanks has started shooting portions of his new film “A Hologram for the King” in Egypt’s Red Sea resort city of Hurghada, the country’s state news agency reported Saturday.

Hanks arrived Friday in Egypt and told the local independent daily newspaper Al-Masry Al-Youm that it was his first visit to the Red Sea, though he’s read a lot about it. The newspaper said Hanks will be sleeping in a yacht in the Red Sea during the filming.

Egypt’s state news agency MENA reported that Hanks will film scenes in diving areas off the coast.

The movie is directed by German filmmaker Tom Tykwer and is based on a 2012 novel by Dave Eggers. Hanks will play the role of a struggling American salesman who travels to Saudi Arabia to sign a contract with a wealthy monarch, but

Wilson first appeared as winged superhero Falcon in 1969 and was one of comics’ first African-American superheroes.

The change will come this November in “All-New Captain America” No. 1.

Kerry was backed by leaders from Britain, the Netherlands, Malaysia, Australia and France -- as well as Ukraine -- in calling on Russian President Vladimir Putin to intervene in getting an international probe under way.

SINGARAJA - The information on the incident afflicting the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 falling in Ukraine caused the family of Wayan Sujana, 25, one of the passengers from Banyuwedang hamlet, Pejarakan, Gerokgak, to be instantly surprised. Moreover, the information on the crash came from the airport authority in Malaysia and embassy office mentioning if Sujana included one of the passengers in the ill-fated plane.

Information collected in the field on Friday afternoon (Jul 18) mentioned if Sujana was a student with excellent achievement at the Diploma 3 majoring in Hospitality at the Ganesha Education University, Singaraja.

He was preparing his paper. During at college, Sujana was known to have many foreign college friends.

Sujana had a younger sister, Kadek Sunarti, and younger brother Komang Sudiana. While studying at college, he supported his family and education costs of his brother and sister.

Meanwhile, his parents Ketut Ginastra and Wayan Sukri only relied on their income from selling vegetables and salt farming.

No wonder if Sujana had been the backbone of his family. Definitely, his family was shocked after getting the information if the plane carrying Sujana fell on the flight from Amsterdam to Malaysia, Thursday (Jul 17).

The father of Sujana, Ketut Ginastra, when met at his residence was shocked and unable to hold his sadness related to

the accident happened to his son. Meanwhile, his family and neighbors began to arrive and ask the truth of the information at issue.

Last Saturday, Kadek Sunarti said that her brother went to Belgium on June 18, 2014. He departed with his college friend at the Diploma 3 of Hospitality at the Ganesha Education University, Singaraja. His college friend was a student from the Netherlands. Sujana came to Belgium to attend the wedding reception of his boss named Bens where he worked. In addition, Sujana also attended the wedding invitation of one of the fellow students in the Netherlands. “At that time, he set out with friends because having received a wedding invitation from his boss and his friend in the Netherlands. But, I do not know the day of the wedding ceremony,” she said.

Having been stay overseas for quite some time and by chance a ceremony would be held at his home and completed his paper, Sujana decided to go back to Bali. On Friday morning

(Jul 18) around 02:00 a.m., his sister chatted via Facebook if he would be going back to Bali.

Sujana mentioned if the flight from Amsterdam would transit in Malaysia and arrived at Ngurah Rai Airport in Denpasar, Friday (Jul 18). “My brother said he would come back to Bali and sent his picture when he was at the airport in Amsterdam,” she explained.

On Friday (Jul 18), she was shocked after watching news on TV if the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 fell. At first, she did not believe the news and did not feel any strange thing. She also looked for information to know the whereabouts of Sujana via the internet. The information was finally getting clearer after the embassy and the airport authority of Malaysia contacted the family to convey if the passenger on behalf of Wayan Sujana was including one of the passengers on board of the unlucky Malaysia Airlines MH-17. “I was very surprised and after getting the information from the embassy, in fact, our brother was in the

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

DENPASAR - Small and cottage industries dominate Bali’s exports accounting for 78.41 percent of the province’s export earning of US$215.03 million in the first five months of the year.

“Exports of the products of small industries including canned fish components of house buildings, plastics, shoes, bags and textiles were valued at US$78.51 million or 36.51 percent of the total export value,” head of the provincial office of the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) Panusunan Siregar said on Sunday.

The total export value of Bali fell slightly from US$216.92 million in the same period in 2013.

Exports of the household handicraft were valued at US$93.26 million or 41.90 percent.

Other commodities accounted for 21.59 percent such as plantation and other agricultural commodities including fishery products.

Panusunan Siregar the main markets include the United States accounting for 20.82 percent and Singapore accounting for 14.62 percent of the exports, Japan 12.23 percent, Australia 5.25 percent, Thailand 4.18 percent and a number of other countries.

A new version of software that synchs to UP24 lifestyle-tracking wristbands was released on Wednesday with features tailored to help people trim waistlines by tapping into insights about what they are packing into their tummies.

“This goes after weight management,” Jawbone wellness and platform group manager Andrew Rosenthal told AFP. “We know that people want to make it easier to eat healthier.”

UP24 bands use sensors to track how active wearers are and how well they sleep, but the diet piece of the fitness puzzle has to be logged manually making it the easiest to be left out.

Jawbone data shows that more than three quarters of people who use UP bands have weight goals in mind.

“UP and UP24 have inspired millions of people to get engaged in their own health -- we’ve shown that living better really is a universally popular proposition,” said Jawbone strategy vice president Travis Bogard.

“For the nearly three out of four Americans that are overweight or obese, living better often includes weight loss.”

106 million people will be living with Alzheimer’s by 2050 compared with 30 million in 2010, according to predictions.

The study, led by Carol Brayne, a professor of public health at at the University of Cambridge, looked at seven risk factors for which there was strong evidence of an association with the disease.

These were diabetes, midlife hypertension, midlife obesity, physical inactivity, depression, smoking and low educational attainment.

By reducing the relative risk from each of these factors by 10 percent, it should be possible to slash global prevalence of Alzheimer’s in 2050 by 8.5 percent, preventing nine million cases, it said.

A 2011 estimate said that as many as one in two cases of Alzheimer’s could be prevented through changes in lifestyle and personal wellbeing.

But the new study said that this estimate was too high, as some of the risk factors are intertwined.

For instance, diabetes, hypertension and obesity are linked with physical inactivity and all in turn are influenced by educational level.

The paper is a mathematical model based on the notion that the seven risk factors are causes rather than just statistical associations -- an assumption that is often fiercely debated in medicine.

“Although there is no single way to prevent dementia, we may be able to take steps to reduce our risk of developing dementia at

older ages,” Brayne said in a press release issued by Cambridge.

“We know what many of these factors are, and that they are often linked.

“Simply tackling physical inactivity, for example, will reduce levels of obesity, hypertension and diabetes, and prevent some people from developing dementia as well as a healthier old age in general - it’s a win-win situation.”

DENPASAR - The application of progressive tax reaps complaints again from the public. Due to administering the progressive tax, many people are late because the tax payment due date has passed. Even, one-day late is considered one year, so the taxpayers are imposed with fine, ranging from hundreds of thousands to millions of rupiahs.

One of the taxpayers, I Dewa Putu Sudarsana, experienced such condition. He administered the tax payment of his vehicle that was due on June 16, 2014. Actually he had prepared the requirements of the progressive tax such as attaching family card (KK) and the identity card of the vehicle owner.

However, when he was about to register in the counter of progressive tax payment, the clerk rejected him because the data of his vehicle did appear in the database file. “The data did not appear as blocked at the revenue service (Dispenda). To retrieve the data, there must be a certificate of finance. For this requirement, I have met,” he explained.

Then, he re-registered the vehicle, but local officer said it could not. As a result, the tax payment was late. “The next day, Thursday (Jul 17), I came back to the counter of progressive tax payment. However, at that time the system crashed and did not work.

So, automatically, I was imposed with fine,” he complained.

The fine to be paid was not in small

According to him, the Bali Revenue Service lacked of socialization. “I agree with the implementation of progressive taxation.

However, it was only conducted for one month. Have a look at Surabaya, it also applied similar tax but it took two years. Of course, Balinese people will be surprised if the socialization was only carried out within a month,” he exclaimed.

Meanwhile, the Head of Bali Revenue Service, I Wayan Suarjana, when contacted last Saturday admitted if the system crashed.

He said that his party would check it first.

Fair or not, the back-to-back incidents have led travelers to question the safety of flying Malaysia Airlines. Malaysian officials were widely criticized for how they handled the search for Flight 370.

“Airlines symbolize the nation and are ambassadors,” says Chris Sloan, who runs the aviation history and news website Airchive. com. “Airlines tend to reflect the values of their countries.”

NEW YORK - The publisher of the US business magazine Forbes said Friday a controlling stake in the group had been sold to a Hong Kong-based investment consortium.

Forbes Media will remain privately held and USbased, but a majority stake is being sold to the newly formed Integrated Whale Media Investments, based in Hong Kong.

The Forbes family will retain “a significant ownership stake” in the company under the plan and will continue to participate in its operations.

Steve Forbes, grandson of the company’s founder, will maintain his role as chairman and editor-in-chief under the plan, which brings new capital into the publishing group.

“This is a major milestone for the company and our family, and we’re pleased to partner with a forwardlooking investor group to further drive the evolution and growth of this exceptional company,” Steve Forbes said in a statement.

“Our partners respect our brand and values, and support our longstanding mission of championing entrepreneurship and free market capitalism through quality, independent business journalism. The best evidence of their commitment to what we stand for is their insistence on the continued involvement of the Forbes family, the current management and our highly talented editorial team.”

The group is led by Integrated Asset Management (Asia) Limited founded by Tak Cheung Yam. Another investor, Wayne Hsieh, is the co-founder of ASUSTeK Computer Inc., which makes the Asus brand of personal computers and electronics. He is based in Singapore.

The amount of the investment was not disclosed by Forbes, but the New York Times said it will be some $475 million.

Under the deal, Elevation Partners, which includes U2 singer Bono and which has had a minority stake in Forbes since 2006, will divest from the group.

The magazine, known for its rankings of wealthy Americans and global business leaders, was launched in 1917 by Scottish immigrant BC Forbes. It was run by his son Malcolm Forbes before being taken over by Steve Forbes, a onetime presidential candidate.

The magazine has some six million readers in the United States and international editions published in 21 languages, which brings the number of global readers to some 75 million.

The investor group “will provide capital, as well as financial and operational expertise, and intends to leverage its international relationships to strategically enlarge Forbes Media’s reach on a global scale,” according to the statement.

“The group supports Forbes Media’s ongoing transformation into a global media, branding and technology company.”

According to the statement, Forbes Media “is profitable and, in 2013, achieved its best financial performance in the last six years.”

The move comes amid turmoil in the print journalism segment, following the spinoff of Time Inc. -- which publishes Forbes rival Fortune -- by conglomerate Time Warner.

SYDNEY - G20 trade ministers reaffirmed Saturday their commitment to free trade as a central driver of growth and to streamline the flow of goods through borders.

The ministers met in Sydney for the latest round of talks among the world’s leading economies, with Australia’s Trade Minister Andrew Robb saying all nations were still committed to the Bali agreement struck in December.

Robb said while some G20 members raised concerns about the deal, which streamlines the global flow of goods, “every country there at the meeting did reaffirm their commitment to all nine (elements of the Bali agreement) being completed”.

The Bali agreement by the World Trade Organisation’s 160 members saw them commit to lowering global trade barriers, with the intention of making it easier for developing countries to trade with the developed world in global markets.

French Trade Minister Fleur Pellerin said the G20 also discussed how free trade was key in driving economic growth amid fiscal consolidation and declining government revenues.

“We focused a lot on free trade being one of the leverages that we can use to

boost growth in France ... investment and trade ... are definitely the main aspects of our growth agenda,” Pellerin told AFP. The crash of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 on Thursday had threatened to overshadow the summit, with both Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Robb meeting the Russian trade representative on the sidelines of the talks.

Russia’s role in the incident has come under scrutiny amid its possible links to the separatists controlling territory in eastern Ukraine where the aircraft had come down in.

“We made requests for Russia to give its unequivocal commitment to facilitate these sorts of immediate objectives” of safe access to the crash site and a binding United Nations’ Security Council for an independent investigation, Robb said.

Earlier Saturday, Robb warned that Canberra may consider trade sanctions against Moscow as a result of the crash, which killed 298 people, including 28 Australians, subject to how it “responds, cooperates and is proactive in seeking answers”.

Australia, along with several other countries, already has imposed sanctions and travel bans on some Russians and Ukrainians.

Senior ministers have refused on comment on whether Russian leader Vladimir Putin would be invited to the G20 leaders’ summit in Brisbane, Queensland’s capital, in November.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said: “Let’s wait and see what will happen, but I can give you this assurance -- Australia is a self-respecting country.

“Visitors to this country are people who have done the right thing by this country and lets hope that’s exactly what we would find in the weeks and months ahead.”

Gelis Rauh passenger ferry, carrying 76 passengers and some motor vehicles, caught fire 30 minutes after departing from Padangbai Harbor heading to Lembar Harbor, West Nusa Tenggara, on Thursday (July 17) at 22:00 local time.

All parts of the ferry were quickly gutted by fire and some explosion occurred. Some of the passengers plunged into the sea and swam toward the rescue boats.

DENPASAR - Entering the week before the Eid, the homecoming activities looked very busy on Saturday (Jul 19). Jembrana Police have begun to secure the path along 74 kilometers on the DenpasarGilimanuk path from Pengeragoan to Gilimanuk Harbor. At least, 15 monitoring posts had begun to be built along the path. Besides,

police also alerted 650 personnel for homecoming and backflow period. Especially at Gilimanuk Harbor, a total of 221 personnel were stationed, while the remaining personnel were placed at the posts along the route.

Israeli bulldozers destroy Hamas tunnels in Gaza Associated Press Writer

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip — Israel said it widened its ground offensive early Sunday, sending more troops into Gaza after demolishing more than a dozen Hamas tunnels and intensifying tank fire on border areas. Loud explosions shook Gaza as Israeli flares lit up the night sky and Israeli fighter jets flew low across the densely populated territory.

Since the start of Israel-Hamas fighting almost two weeks ago, 348 Palestinians were killed and 2,700 wounded in Israeli air and artillery strikes, according to Palestinian health officials.

One-fourth of the deaths were reported since the start of the ground offensive late Thursday, the officials said. Five Israelis — three soldiers and two civilians — have also been killed and dozens wounded as rockets continue to rain down on Israel.

As fighting raged, U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon headed to Qatar on Sunday as part of renewed cease-fire efforts. Hamas last week rejected an Egyptian call to both sides to halt hostilities, saying it first wants guarantees that Israel and Egypt will signifi-

cantly ease their border blockade of Gaza. Israel’s military said early Sunday that it has widened its ground offensive by sending more troops into Gaza. Over the weekend, Israeli troops demolished more than a dozen tunnels that were used by Hamas to sneak into Israel and carry out attacks on soldiers and civilians, the army said.

Israeli soldiers uncovered 34 shafts leading into about a dozen underground tunnels, some as deep as 30 meters (yards), the military said. Israel views the tunnels as a strategic threat, and demolishing them is a high priority in their campaign. Footage released by the Israeli military showed tunnels being demolished by army excavators and

other equipment on the ground and by airstrikes from above.

Palestinian gunmen disguised in Israeli uniforms managed to infiltrate Israel from Gaza using another tunnel and on Saturday killed two Israeli soldiers and injured several others, the military said. At least one Palestinian was killed in the clash. Hamas said 12 of its fighters participated in the attack and that the group took some of the soldiers’ weapons back to their hideouts.

In two other confrontations, Palestinian gunmen jumped out of tunnels and shot at soldiers who returned fire. Two of the gunmen were killed. Another militant died when the explosive vest he was wearing went off, the military said.

There was growing concern about the whereabouts of some of the bodies which had been removed from the crash site, while others were left lying in field in the rural part of eastern Ukraine where the Boeing 777 jet was brought to ground.

British Prime Minister David Cameron called for tougher European action against Moscow if Putin did not change tack.

“If President Putin does not change his approach on Ukraine, then Europe and the West must fundamentally change our approach to Russia,” he said, writing in the Sunday Times newspaper.

“Russia can use this moment to find a path out of this festering, dangerous crisis. I hope it will do so. But if that does not happen then we must respond robustly,” Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte -- his nation mourning the loss of 192 compatriots -- said he had called on Putin during a “very intense” conversation to “take responsibility” for a credible investigation.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said the crash site was “absolutely chaotic” as he sought to recover 28 bodies of his compatriots killed in the disaster.

“My fear is that Russia will say the right thing, but that on the ground interference with the site, interference with investigators, interference with the dignified treatment of bodies will continue,” he said.

International monitors were met on Saturday by Kalashnikov-wielding militias who allowed them access to only the outskirts of the field -- its swaying sunflowers hiding dismembered remains of charred and decomposing bodies of victims whose lives were cut short on Thursday.

The Ukrainian government issued a furious statement declaring that “terrorists with the support of Russia are trying to destroy proof of this international crime”.

Missing black boxes

Malaysia’s transport minister expressed alarm before boarding a flight to Kiev over “indications that vital evidence has not been preserved in place”.

“One of the crucial questions is the fate of the black boxes,” said Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe spokesman Michael Bociurkiw.

US President Barack Obama and major world leaders now agree that the Malaysia Airlines jet was blown out of the sky at 33,000 feet (10,000 metres) by a sophisticated surface-to-air missile fired from rebel-controlled territory.

Kiev has gone a step further by accusing militias of using a Russian-supplied Buk system to down the jet after confusing it with a Ukrainian military transporter.

Ukraine has released recordings of what it said was an intercepted call between an insurgent commander and a Russian intelligence officer as they realised they had shot down a passenger jet.

But Putin has blamed the tragedy on Kiev’s three-month military operation.

The plane’s downing came less than a day after the United States unleashed punishing sanctions against some of Russia’s most important energy and military firms -- most of them with links to Putin -- and urged more hesitant European leaders to follow suit.

The European Union -- many of its member states dependent on Russian gas -- took the far less punitive step on Friday of curbing some future investments in Russia and leaving the option open for broader sanctions.

INDONESIA Presidential poll results to announce on July 22 Agence France-Presse

JAKARTA - Jakarta governor Joko Widodo is expected to be declared the winner of Indonesia’s disputed presidential election this week but his rival, ex-general Prabowo Subianto, is likely to mount a legal challenge that will prolong the political deadlock.

Both candidates declared victory at the July 9 poll after a bitterly fought campaign in the world’s thirdbiggest democracy, however reliable pollsters predict Widodo will win by several points when the lengthy votecounting process is completed.

The election was the tightest and most divisive in Indonesia since the downfall of dictator Suharto in 1998, and has emerged as the biggest test yet for the young democracy.

“We’ve had a very polarised election, one which is very close, which is something that we have not really had before,” said veteran Indonesia analyst Kevin Evans.

Known by his nickname Jokowi, the Jakarta governor is the first serious presidential contender in the world’s most populous Muslimmajority nation without links to the autocratic past and is from a new breed of up and coming politicians.

In contrast, Prabowo was the head of the army’s special forces in the Suharto era, has been dogged by allegations of human rights abuses and used to be married to one of the dictator’s daughters.

The results are expected on Tuesday after some 130 million ballots are counted by hand across the archipelago of more than 17,000

islands, that stretches from mountainous Papua in the east to jungleclad Sumatra in the west.

Tensions have escalated dramatically in the past two weeks as both sides accused the other of seeking to rig the outcome, and police will be out in force around the country when the final results are released.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has urged the candidates to keep their supporters off the streets amid fears of unrest, 16 years after thousands were killed when violence swept the country as three decades of authoritarian rule came to a chaotic end.

Investors in Southeast Asia’s top economy are hoping that Widodo, seen as a clean leader in one of the world’s most corrupt countries and likely to enact much-needed reforms, emerges the winner.

Observers say there is still a small chance of Prabowo being declared the winner, although only if his team engaged in widespread vote-rigging.

However, the ex-general insists he is in the lead and it is Widodo’s side, not his, that is seeking to tamper with the votes.

The election campaign was the dirtiest in Indonesia’s short democratic history, and saw Widodo’s once-huge lead dwindle to single digits after a flood of negative attacks.

However on election day, pollsters with a track record of accurately predicting Indonesian election outcomes gave Widodo a lead of between two and seven percentage

points, and official results are expected to confirm his victory.

Several less well-known survey institutes called a win for Prabowo but doubts have been raised about their results. Two of them were thrown out of the pollsters’ industry body last week for refusing to undergo an audit.

Even if Widodo is declared the winner, the presidential race is unlikely to be over, as Prabowo is almost certain to challenge the results in the Constitutional Court, claiming Widodo’s side engaged in vote-tampering.

The court has until late August to issue a ruling.

There are concerns about the institution’s impartiality after its former chief justice was jailed for life last month for corruption, although analysts believe the court will be at pains to appear clean following the scandal and is likely to side with Widodo.

Malaysia Airlines confirms 12 Indonesians aboard crash MH17 Antara

JAKARTA - There were 12 Indonesians among 298 passengers, who boarded flight MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur that crashed in Ukraine on Thursday, Malaysia Airlines has confirmed.

There were several passengers from other nationalities such as 192 Dutch nationals, included one US-Dutch citizen, the airlines stated in the press release on Saturday.

Besides, there were also 15 airplane crew and two babies along with 44 Malaysian nationals who died in the crash. Additionally, there were 27 Australians, ten British nationals, four Germans and four Belgians, apart from three Filipinos, a Canadian and a New Zealander among those who perished on flight MH17.

Malaysia Airlines said they have coordinated with several embassies to communicate the latest information to the passengers’ families.

The airways will also coordinate with the emergency response team and several authorities to provide the required services to the families.

They also stated their concern for the families regarding the incident that claimed 298 lives.

The airlines has also provided a hotline for the families of victims to get information. These are +603 7884 1234 for Malaysia area and +31703487770 for the Netherlands.

Malaysia Airlines said flight MH17 that was allegedly shot down in Ukrainian air space, had a safe route as stated by International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

The International Air Transportation Association said the air zone that was crossed by the flight was not a banned cruise flight route.

After the incident, however, all routes of Malaysia Airlines will avoid the usual route and take alternative routes.

Maldonado staying with Lotus next year, says Lopez Reuters

Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado will stay with Lotus in 2015, despite the Formula One team suffering a terrible first half of the season, team principal Gerard Lopez said on Saturday.

Maldonado has yet to score a point this season as Lotus struggle with the new technical changes.

“I can confirm 50 percent of our driver line-up for 2015 as Pastor is with us for next year,” said Lopez on the Lotus F1 website (www.lotusf1team.com). “Despite the difficulties we’ve had so far this season, he recognises our true potential as a team and we recognise his true potential as a driver. “We will achieve great things together.”

Maldonado, 29, had been with Williams for three years when he switched to Lotus at the end of the 2013 season.

Ironically, Williams are one of the success stories of this season, in fourth place in the constructors’ championship table behind runaway leaders Mercedes with 103 points, while Lotus have a meagre eight points and lie eighth of the 11 teams racing.

In qualifying for Sunday’s German Grand prix at Hockenheim, Maldonado failed to make it out of the first session and will start 19th.

speculation that Tinkoff-Saxo Bank selected him among its nine Tour riders only after the team suspended Czech rider Roman Kreuziger. Just days before announcing its Tour roster last month, the team suspended Kreuziger from competing any more this year because of anomalies in his biological passport, which cycling officials use to fight doping. SEATTLE — Osvaldo Alonso scored early in the second half as the Seattle Sounders drew 3-3 with Premier League side Tottenham in a friendly Saturday, the first match for new Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Tottenham began its preseason North America tour facing former striker Clint Dempsey and his new club. Dempsey left Tottenham to sign with the Sounders last August.

SEATTLE — Osvaldo Alonso scored early in the second half as the Seattle Sounders drew 3-3 with Premier League side Tottenham in a friendly Saturday, the first match for new Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Tottenham began its preseason North America tour facing former striker Clint Dempsey and his new club. Dempsey left Tottenham to sign with the Sounders last August.

Pochettino left Southampton in May to replace Tim Sherwood, who was fired on May 13 after just five months on the job following Tottenham’s sixth-place league finish.

Chelsea’s purchase of Brazilian defender Filipe Luis from Atletico Madrid on Friday was the English Premier League club’s final act of the transfer window, manager Jose Mourinho said.

Sabella, whose side lost 1-0 after extra time to Germany in the Maracana final a week ago, told reporters on Friday he would be mulling over his future this weekend and then arrange a Wednesday meeting with Argentine FA chief Julio Grondona.

Maldonado staying with Lotus next year, says Lopez Reuters

Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado will stay with Lotus in 2015, despite the Formula One team suffering a terrible first half of the season, team principal Gerard Lopez said on Saturday.

Maldonado has yet to score a point this season as Lotus struggle with the new technical changes.

“I can confirm 50 percent of our driver line-up for 2015 as Pastor is with us for next year,” said Lopez on the Lotus F1 website (www.lotusf1team.com). “Despite the difficulties we’ve had so far this season, he recognises our true potential as a team and we recognise his true potential as a driver. “We will achieve great things together.”

Maldonado, 29, had been with Williams for three years when he switched to Lotus at the end of the 2013 season.

Ironically, Williams are one of the success stories of this season, in fourth place in the constructors’ championship table behind runaway leaders Mercedes with 103 points, while Lotus have a meagre eight points and lie eighth of the 11 teams racing.

In qualifying for Sunday’s German Grand prix at Hockenheim, Maldonado failed to make it out of the first session and will start 19th.

RISOUL, France — Panting hard with his jersey unzipped and wide open in the heat, Polish rider Rafal Majka sped to a solo breakaway victory on Stage 14 as the Tour de France wrapped up its foray in the Alps on Saturday.

In a flip of their finishes a day earlier in the race’s entree to the Alps when Nibali won, the Pole and the Italian crossed one-two after the 177-kilometer (110-mile) ride over the 2,360-meter (7,742-foot) Izoard pass — the race’s highest point — and a final ascent up to Risoul ski station.

speculation that Tinkoff-Saxo Bank selected him among its nine Tour riders only after the team suspended Czech rider Roman Kreuziger. Just days before announcing its Tour roster last month, the team suspended Kreuziger from competing any more this year because of anomalies in his biological passport, which cycling officials use to fight doping. He has denied any wrongdoing.

Majka, who said he was tired after the strong Giro performance, said he was given assurances by team managers that “you’ll do the Tour, but you’ll take it easy in the first week,” he said. “It’s also wrong to think that I’m doing the Tour because Roman Kreuziger isn’t. Had he been able to start, we would have both been part of the team.”

Victor Petri, a team spokesman, confirmed Majka was in contention for a roster spot before the Kreuziger case. Israeli bulldozers destroy Hamas tunnels in Gaza Associated Press Writer

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip — Israel said it widened its ground offensive early Sunday, sending more troops into Gaza after demolishing more than a dozen Hamas tunnels and intensifying tank fire on border areas. Loud explosions shook Gaza as Israeli flares lit up the night sky and Israeli fighter jets flew low across the densely populated territory.

Since the start of Israel-Hamas fighting almost two weeks ago, 348 Palestinians were killed and 2,700 wounded in Israeli air and artillery strikes, according to Palestinian health officials.

One-fourth of the deaths were reported since the start of the ground offensive late Thursday, the officials said. Five Israelis — three soldiers and two civilians — have also been killed and dozens wounded as rockets continue to rain down on Israel.

As fighting raged, U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon headed to Qatar on Sunday as part of renewed cease-fire efforts. Hamas last week rejected an Egyptian call to both sides to halt hostilities, saying it first wants guarantees that Israel and Egypt will signifi-

cantly ease their border blockade of Gaza. Israel’s military said early Sunday that it has widened its ground offensive by sending more troops into Gaza. Over the weekend, Israeli troops demolished more than a dozen tunnels that were used by Hamas to sneak into Israel and carry out attacks on soldiers and civilians, the army said.

Israeli soldiers uncovered 34 shafts leading into about a dozen underground tunnels, some as deep as 30 meters (yards), the military said. Israel views the tunnels as a strategic threat, and demolishing them is a high priority in their campaign. Footage released by the Israeli military showed tunnels being demolished by army excavators and

other equipment on the ground and by airstrikes from above.

Palestinian gunmen disguised in Israeli uniforms managed to infiltrate Israel from Gaza using another tunnel and on Saturday killed two Israeli soldiers and injured several others, the military said. At least one Palestinian was killed in the clash. Hamas said 12 of its fighters participated in the attack and that the group took some of the soldiers’ weapons back to their hideouts.

In two other confrontations, Palestinian gunmen jumped out of tunnels and shot at soldiers who returned fire. Two of the gunmen were killed. Another militant died when the explosive vest he was wearing went off, the military said.

There was growing concern about the whereabouts of some of the bodies which had been removed from the crash site, while others were left lying in field in the rural part of eastern Ukraine where the Boeing 777 jet was brought to ground.

British Prime Minister David Cameron called for tougher European action against Moscow if Putin did not change tack.

“If President Putin does not change his approach on Ukraine, then Europe and the West must fundamentally change our approach to Russia,” he said, writing in the Sunday Times newspaper.

“Russia can use this moment to find a path out of this festering, dangerous crisis. I hope it will do so. But if that does not happen then we must respond robustly,” Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte -- his nation mourning the loss of 192 compatriots -- said he had called on Putin during a “very intense” conversation to “take responsibility” for a credible investigation.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said the crash site was “absolutely chaotic” as he sought to recover 28 bodies of his compatriots killed in the disaster.

“My fear is that Russia will say the right thing, but that on the ground interference with the site, interference with investigators, interference with the dignified treatment of bodies will continue,” he said.

International monitors were met on Saturday by Kalashnikov-wielding militias who allowed them access to only the outskirts of the field -- its swaying sunflowers hiding dismembered remains of charred and decomposing bodies of victims whose lives were cut short on Thursday.

The Ukrainian government issued a furious statement declaring that “terrorists with the support of Russia are trying to destroy proof of this international crime”.

Missing black boxes

Malaysia’s transport minister expressed alarm before boarding a flight to Kiev over “indications that vital evidence has not been preserved in place”.

“One of the crucial questions is the fate of the black boxes,” said Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe spokesman Michael Bociurkiw.

The head of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, into whose airspace the doomed jet strayed to avoid bad weather, said his men had never recovered the data recorders or tampered with evidence.

The diplomatic wrangling was accompanied by uninterrupted fighting across Ukraine’s eastern rustbelt -- a Russian-speaking region of seven million people who largely view the more nationalistic west of the splintered country with mistrust.

Putin rejects all charges of providing either funding or military support to the insurgents who in April seized towns in the region demanding independence after a pro-Western government took power in Kiev.

Their move came just two weeks after Russia -- stunned by the removal of pro-Kremlin president Viktor Yanukovych, annexed heavily-Russified Crimea.

Ukrainian troops pressed on with an offensive against the rebels, reporting they had taken full control of the main airport of the neighbouring separatist stronghold of Lugansk and launching all-out offensives against two nearby towns.

Government troops said they had also established full control of Donetsk airport for the first time since it was seized at the end of May. Kiev said the latest clashes killed five soldiers and wounded another 20.

US President Barack Obama and major world leaders now agree that the Malaysia Airlines jet was blown out of the sky at 33,000 feet (10,000 metres) by a sophisticated surface-to-air missile fired from rebel-controlled territory.

Kiev has gone a step further by accusing militias of using a Russian-supplied Buk system to down the jet after confusing it with a Ukrainian military transporter.

Ukraine has released recordings of what it said was an intercepted call between an insurgent commander and a Russian intelligence officer as they realised they had shot down a passenger jet.

But Putin has blamed the tragedy on Kiev’s three-month military operation.

The plane’s downing came less than a day after the United States unleashed punishing sanctions against some of Russia’s most important energy and military firms -- most of them with links to Putin -- and urged more hesitant European leaders to follow suit.

The European Union -- many of its member states dependent on Russian gas -- took the far less punitive step on Friday of curbing some future investments in Russia and leaving the option open for broader sanctions.

JAKARTA - Jakarta governor Joko Widodo is expected to be declared the winner of Indonesia’s disputed presidential election this week but his rival, ex-general Prabowo Subianto, is likely to mount a legal challenge that will prolong the political deadlock.

Both candidates declared victory at the July 9 poll after a bitterly fought campaign in the world’s thirdbiggest democracy, however reliable pollsters predict Widodo will win by several points when the lengthy votecounting process is completed.

The election was the tightest and most divisive in Indonesia since the downfall of dictator Suharto in 1998, and has emerged as the biggest test yet for the young democracy.

“We’ve had a very polarised election, one which is very close, which is something that we have not really had before,” said veteran Indonesia analyst Kevin Evans.

Known by his nickname Jokowi, the Jakarta governor is the first serious presidential contender in the world’s most populous Muslimmajority nation without links to the autocratic past and is from a new breed of up and coming politicians.

In contrast, Prabowo was the head of the army’s special forces in the Suharto era, has been dogged by allegations of human rights abuses and used to be married to one of the dictator’s daughters.

The results are expected on Tuesday after some 130 million ballots are counted by hand across the archipelago of more than 17,000

islands, that stretches from mountainous Papua in the east to jungleclad Sumatra in the west.

Tensions have escalated dramatically in the past two weeks as both sides accused the other of seeking to rig the outcome, and police will be out in force around the country when the final results are released.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has urged the candidates to keep their supporters off the streets amid fears of unrest, 16 years after thousands were killed when violence swept the country as three decades of authoritarian rule came to a chaotic end.

Investors in Southeast Asia’s top economy are hoping that Widodo, seen as a clean leader in one of the world’s most corrupt countries and likely to enact much-needed reforms, emerges the winner.

Observers say there is still a small chance of Prabowo being declared the winner, although only if his team engaged in widespread vote-rigging.

However, the ex-general insists he is in the lead and it is Widodo’s side, not his, that is seeking to tamper with the votes.

The election campaign was the dirtiest in Indonesia’s short democratic history, and saw Widodo’s once-huge lead dwindle to single digits after a flood of negative attacks.

However on election day, pollsters with a track record of accurately predicting Indonesian election outcomes gave Widodo a lead of between two and seven percentage

points, and official results are expected to confirm his victory.

Several less well-known survey institutes called a win for Prabowo but doubts have been raised about their results. Two of them were thrown out of the pollsters’ industry body last week for refusing to undergo an audit.

Even if Widodo is declared the winner, the presidential race is unlikely to be over, as Prabowo is almost certain to challenge the results in the Constitutional Court, claiming Widodo’s side engaged in vote-tampering.

The court has until late August to issue a ruling.

There are concerns about the institution’s impartiality after its former chief justice was jailed for life last month for corruption, although analysts believe the court will be at pains to appear clean following the scandal and is likely to side with Widodo.

Malaysia Airlines confirms 12 Indonesians aboard crash MH17 Antara

JAKARTA - There were 12 Indonesians among 298 passengers, who boarded flight MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur that crashed in Ukraine on Thursday, Malaysia Airlines has confirmed.

There were several passengers from other nationalities such as 192 Dutch nationals, included one US-Dutch citizen, the airlines stated in the press release on Saturday.

Besides, there were also 15 airplane crew and two babies along with 44 Malaysian nationals who died in the crash. Additionally, there were 27 Australians, ten British nationals, four Germans and four Belgians, apart from three Filipinos, a Canadian and a New Zealander among those who perished on flight MH17.

Malaysia Airlines said they have coordinated with several embassies to communicate the latest information to the passengers’ families.

The airways will also coordinate with the emergency response team and several authorities to provide the required services to the families.

They also stated their concern for the families regarding the incident that claimed 298 lives.

The airlines has also provided a hotline for the families of victims to get information. These are +603 7884 1234 for Malaysia area and +31703487770 for the Netherlands.

Malaysia Airlines said flight MH17 that was allegedly shot down in Ukrainian air space, had a safe route as stated by International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

The International Air Transportation Association said the air zone that was crossed by the flight was not a banned cruise flight route.

After the incident, however, all routes of Malaysia Airlines will avoid the usual route and take alternative routes.

NEW YORK - The publisher of the US business magazine Forbes said Friday a controlling stake in the group had been sold to a Hong Kong-based investment consortium.

Forbes Media will remain privately held and USbased, but a majority stake is being sold to the newly formed Integrated Whale Media Investments, based in Hong Kong.

The Forbes family will retain “a significant ownership stake” in the company under the plan and will continue to participate in its operations.

Steve Forbes, grandson of the company’s founder, will maintain his role as chairman and editor-in-chief under the plan, which brings new capital into the publishing group.

“This is a major milestone for the company and our family, and we’re pleased to partner with a forwardlooking investor group to further drive the evolution and growth of this exceptional company,” Steve Forbes said in a statement.

“Our partners respect our brand and values, and support our longstanding mission of championing entrepreneurship and free market capitalism through quality, independent business journalism. The best evidence of their commitment to what we stand for is their insistence on the continued involvement of the Forbes family, the current management and our highly talented editorial team.”

The group is led by Integrated Asset Management (Asia) Limited founded by Tak Cheung Yam. Another investor, Wayne Hsieh, is the co-founder of ASUSTeK Computer Inc., which makes the Asus brand of personal computers and electronics. He is based in Singapore.

The amount of the investment was not disclosed by Forbes, but the New York Times said it will be some $475 million.

Under the deal, Elevation Partners, which includes U2 singer Bono and which has had a minority stake in Forbes since 2006, will divest from the group.

The magazine, known for its rankings of wealthy Americans and global business leaders, was launched in 1917 by Scottish immigrant BC Forbes. It was run by his son Malcolm Forbes before being taken over by Steve Forbes, a onetime presidential candidate.

The magazine has some six million readers in the United States and international editions published in 21 languages, which brings the number of global readers to some 75 million.

The investor group “will provide capital, as well as financial and operational expertise, and intends to leverage its international relationships to strategically enlarge Forbes Media’s reach on a global scale,” according to the statement.

“The group supports Forbes Media’s ongoing transformation into a global media, branding and technology company.”

According to the statement, Forbes Media “is profitable and, in 2013, achieved its best financial performance in the last six years.”

The move comes amid turmoil in the print journalism segment, following the spinoff of Time Inc. -- which publishes Forbes rival Fortune -- by conglomerate Time Warner.

SYDNEY - G20 trade ministers reaffirmed Saturday their commitment to free trade as a central driver of growth and to streamline the flow of goods through borders.

The ministers met in Sydney for the latest round of talks among the world’s leading economies, with Australia’s Trade Minister Andrew Robb saying all nations were still committed to the Bali agreement struck in December.

Robb said while some G20 members raised concerns about the deal, which streamlines the global flow of goods, “every country there at the meeting did reaffirm their commitment to all nine (elements of the Bali agreement) being completed”.

The Bali agreement by the World Trade Organisation’s 160 members saw them commit to lowering global trade barriers, with the intention of making it easier for developing countries to trade with the developed world in global markets.

French Trade Minister Fleur Pellerin said the G20 also discussed how free trade was key in driving economic growth amid fiscal consolidation and declining government revenues.

“We focused a lot on free trade being one of the leverages that we can use to

boost growth in France ... investment and trade ... are definitely the main aspects of our growth agenda,” Pellerin told AFP. The crash of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 on Thursday had threatened to overshadow the summit, with both Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Robb meeting the Russian trade representative on the sidelines of the talks.

Russia’s role in the incident has come under scrutiny amid its possible links to the separatists controlling territory in eastern Ukraine where the aircraft had come down in.

“We made requests for Russia to give its unequivocal commitment to facilitate these sorts of immediate objectives” of safe access to the crash site and a binding United Nations’ Security Council for an independent investigation, Robb said.

Earlier Saturday, Robb warned that Canberra may consider trade sanctions against Moscow as a result of the crash, which killed 298 people, including 28 Australians, subject to how it “responds, cooperates and is proactive in seeking answers”.

Australia, along with several other countries, already has imposed sanctions and travel bans on some Russians and Ukrainians.

Senior ministers have refused on comment on whether Russian leader Vladimir Putin would be invited to the G20 leaders’ summit in Brisbane, Queensland’s capital, in November.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said: “Let’s wait and see what will happen, but I can give you this assurance -- Australia is a self-respecting country.

“Visitors to this country are people who have done the right thing by this country and lets hope that’s exactly what we would find in the weeks and months ahead.”

All parts of the ferry were quickly gutted by fire and some explosion occurred. Some of the passengers plunged into the sea and swam toward the rescue boats.

Fair or not, the back-to-back incidents have led travelers to question the safety of flying Malaysia Airlines. Malaysian officials were widely criticized for how they handled the search for Flight 370.

“Airlines symbolize the nation and are ambassadors,” says Chris Sloan, who runs the aviation history and news website Airchive. com. “Airlines tend to reflect the values of their countries.”

A new version of software that synchs to UP24 lifestyle-tracking wristbands was released on Wednesday with features tailored to help people trim waistlines by tapping into insights about what they are packing into their tummies.

“This goes after weight management,” Jawbone wellness and platform group manager Andrew Rosenthal told AFP. “We know that people want to make it easier to eat healthier.”

UP24 bands use sensors to track how active wearers are and how well they sleep, but the diet piece of the fitness puzzle has to be logged manually making it the easiest to be left out.

Jawbone data shows that more than three quarters of people who use UP bands have weight goals in mind.

“UP and UP24 have inspired millions of people to get engaged in their own health -- we’ve shown that living better really is a universally popular proposition,” said Jawbone strategy vice president Travis Bogard.

“For the nearly three out of four Americans that are overweight or obese, living better often includes weight loss.”

106 million people will be living with Alzheimer’s by 2050 compared with 30 million in 2010, according to predictions.

The study, led by Carol Brayne, a professor of public health at at the University of Cambridge, looked at seven risk factors for which there was strong evidence of an association with the disease.

These were diabetes, midlife hypertension, midlife obesity, physical inactivity, depression, smoking and low educational attainment.

By reducing the relative risk from each of these factors by 10 percent, it should be possible to slash global prevalence of Alzheimer’s in 2050 by 8.5 percent, preventing nine million cases, it said.

A 2011 estimate said that as many as one in two cases of Alzheimer’s could be prevented through changes in lifestyle and personal wellbeing.

But the new study said that this estimate was too high, as some of the risk factors are intertwined.

For instance, diabetes, hypertension and obesity are linked with physical inactivity and all in turn are influenced by educational level.

The paper is a mathematical model based on the notion that the seven risk factors are causes rather than just statistical associations -- an assumption that is often fiercely debated in medicine.

“Although there is no single way to prevent dementia, we may be able to take steps to reduce our risk of developing dementia at

older ages,” Brayne said in a press release issued by Cambridge.

“We know what many of these factors are, and that they are often linked.

“Simply tackling physical inactivity, for example, will reduce levels of obesity, hypertension and diabetes, and prevent some people from developing dementia as well as a healthier old age in general - it’s a win-win situation.”

DENPASAR - The application of progressive tax reaps complaints again from the public. Due to administering the progressive tax, many people are late because the tax payment due date has passed. Even, one-day late is considered one year, so the taxpayers are imposed with fine, ranging from hundreds of thousands to millions of rupiahs.

One of the taxpayers, I Dewa Putu Sudarsana, experienced such condition. He administered the tax payment of his vehicle that was due on June 16, 2014. Actually he had prepared the requirements of the progressive tax such as attaching family card (KK) and the identity card of the vehicle owner.

However, when he was about to register in the counter of progressive tax payment, the clerk rejected him because the data of his vehicle did appear in the database file. “The data did not appear as blocked at the revenue service (Dispenda). To retrieve the data, there must be a certificate of finance. For this requirement, I have met,” he explained.

Then, he re-registered the vehicle, but local officer said it could not. As a result, the tax payment was late. “The next day, Thursday (Jul 17), I came back to the counter of progressive tax payment. However, at that time the system crashed and did not work.

So, automatically, I was imposed with fine,” he complained.

The fine to be paid was not in small

amount namely over IDR 4 million. Understandably, his vehicle was Hammer with license plate DK 90 DS. “The basic amount of tax to be paid is IDR 16 million, but it was then IDR 20 million more as I paid it late.

Actually, the fine did not matter. But I was fined due to administering the progressive tax,” he said.

Such condition caused Sudarsana to pay a fine worth IDR 4 million more. He said the implementation of progressive taxation by the government was actually good. However, the time and system should be improved, so that people were not made surprised. “It was not only experienced by me, but many other people also faced the same problem,” he explained.

According to him, the Bali Revenue Service lacked of socialization. “I agree with the implementation of progressive taxation.

However, it was only conducted for one month. Have a look at Surabaya, it also applied similar tax but it took two years. Of course, Balinese people will be surprised if the socialization was only carried out within a month,” he exclaimed.

Meanwhile, the Head of Bali Revenue Service, I Wayan Suarjana, when contacted last Saturday admitted if the system crashed.

He said that his party would check it first.

SINGARAJA - The information on the incident afflicting the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 falling in Ukraine caused the family of Wayan Sujana, 25, one of the passengers from Banyuwedang hamlet, Pejarakan, Gerokgak, to be instantly surprised. Moreover, the information on the crash came from the airport authority in Malaysia and embassy office mentioning if Sujana included one of the passengers in the ill-fated plane.

No wonder if Sujana had been the backbone of his family. Definitely, his family was shocked after getting the information if the plane carrying Sujana fell on the flight from Amsterdam to Malaysia, Thursday (Jul 17).

The father of Sujana, Ketut Ginastra, when met at his residence was shocked and unable to hold his sadness related to

the accident happened to his son. Meanwhile, his family and neighbors began to arrive and ask the truth of the information at issue.

Last Saturday, Kadek Sunarti said that her brother went to Belgium on June 18, 2014. He departed with his college friend at the Diploma 3 of Hospitality at the Ganesha Education University, Singaraja. His college friend was a student from the Netherlands. Sujana came to Belgium to attend the wedding reception of his boss named Bens where he worked. In addition, Sujana also attended the wedding invitation of one of the fellow students in the Netherlands. “At that time, he set out with friends because having received a wedding invitation from his boss and his friend in the Netherlands. But, I do not know the day of the wedding ceremony,” she said.

Having been stay overseas for quite some time and by chance a ceremony would be held at his home and completed his paper, Sujana decided to go back to Bali. On Friday morning

(Jul 18) around 02:00 a.m., his sister chatted via Facebook if he would be going back to Bali.

Sujana mentioned if the flight from Amsterdam would transit in Malaysia and arrived at Ngurah Rai Airport in Denpasar, Friday (Jul 18). “My brother said he would come back to Bali and sent his picture when he was at the airport in Amsterdam,” she explained.

On Friday (Jul 18), she was shocked after watching news on TV if the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 fell. At first, she did not believe the news and did not feel any strange thing. She also looked for information to know the whereabouts of Sujana via the internet. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Tom Hanks in Egypt to film ‘Hologram for the King’ Associated Press

CAIRO — Hollywood star Tom Hanks has started shooting portions of his new film “A Hologram for the King” in Egypt’s Red Sea resort city of Hurghada, the country’s state news agency reported Saturday.

Hanks arrived Friday in Egypt and told the local independent daily newspaper Al-Masry Al-Youm that it was his first visit to the Red Sea, though he’s read a lot about it. The newspaper said Hanks will be sleeping in a yacht in the Red Sea during the filming.

Egypt’s state news agency MENA reported that Hanks will film scenes in diving areas off the coast.

The movie is directed by German filmmaker Tom Tykwer and is based on a 2012 novel by Dave Eggers. Hanks will play the role of a struggling American salesman who travels to Saudi Arabia to sign a contract with a wealthy monarch, but
