Elton John to receive France’s top honour

PARIS - Rock legend Elton John is to be awarded France’s highest civilian honour this week as he passes through Paris as part of his farewell tour, the French presidency said.

The Legion d’Honneur award will be presented to the 72-year-old megastar by President Emmanuel Macron during a ceremony at the Elysee Palace in the French capital on Friday.

The singer, whose life was captured in the searingly honest “Rocketman” biopic that wowed critics at Cannes film festival last month, is not expected to perform although he was expected to use the occasion to promote his charity work.

Although parts of his fivedecade career were lived in a hazy whirl of sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll,

the British performer has used his stardom to promote gay rights and AIDS causes and was expected to launch an appeal on behalf of the Global Fund to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.

JAKARTA - Hairul Anas Suaidi, a witness of the legal team of Prabowo Subianto-Sandiaga Uno pair, claimed that a pre-election training held by the Joko Widodo (Jokowi)-Ma’ruf Amin campaign team indoctrinated that fraudulence was part of democracy.

“I was a legislative candidate of the Crescent Star Party (PBB), supporter of the no. 1 presidential candidate (Jokowi). I was later assigned to attend a training for (election) witnesses,” Suaidi revealed while addressing a judge panel of the Constitutional Court (MK) here on early Thursday.

During the training, one speaker gave a slideshow presentation of training materials that read fraudulence is part of democracy.

from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and nephew of former MK judge Mahfud MD, expressed shock and angst during the training.

Another material pertained to deploying officers to ensure that a certain candidate emerges victorious, he emphasized.

“Moreover, it showed pictures of people, prominent figures, local officials, and regional administrations, who had been directed to provide logistics support to a cer-

tain candidate. That had disturbed me, and finally, I decided to support (the candidate) no. 2 (Prabowo Subianto),” he remarked.

At the court hearing, Bambang Widjojanto, the legal team leader of the Subianto team, posed a question to Suaidi on whether the training covered materials to win millions of votes. The witness replied in the negative, saying no details were available to that end, but the training solely covered

election strategies and campaign means. For instance, to help the No. 1 candidate pair win, the No 2. candidate pair was identified as following an extreme ideology and having a radical outlook.

The MK has been holding hearings on June 14-28, 2019, over a legal suit filed by the Subianto-Uno pair, who have challenged the presidential election results announced by the General Election Commission (KPU) on May 22, 2019.

After the announcement that fueled a riot that led to eight deaths in Jakarta, Incumbent Jokowi declared victory, but Subianto re-

jected the results and decided to file a legal suit to challenge the KPU’s election results.

As a result of expensive price of airfares

Domestic tourist visit downs

DENPASAR - The high price of airfares has resulted in a decrease in tourist visits to Bali. When compared to May 2018, tourist arrivals in May 2019 dropped by 12 percent. Especially for domestic tourists, the decline even reached 20 to 30 percent.

This was conveyed by Deputy Governor of Bali, Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardhana Sukawati, after attending a plenary session at the Bali House of Representatives on Wednesday (Jun. 19). “It has a great impact big. So our tourism conditions have slightly declined especially domestic ones. Yesterday, we monitored some destinations commonly crowded with domestic tourists, they dropped dramatically,” said the man familiarly addressed as Cok Ace. According to Cok Ace, the decline in domestic tourist visits indeed did not happen 100 percent due to the expensive airfares. However, it is also affected by the opening of the Jakarta-East Java toll road. Most tourists ride private vehicles through the infrastructure and eventually don’t get to Bali.

“Most of them only arrived in Malang. So, if this can be continued, indeed our overland can revive. However, the

infrastructure in Bali must also be repaired,” explained the former regent of Gianyar.

At present, Cok Ace continued, overland routes have not much boosted tourist arrivals. On the contrary, the presence of the Jakarta-East Java toll road actually raises competitors for Bali tourism. On that account, the Denpasar-Gilimanuk infrastructure must be realized immediately to connect to the Trans Java-Bali. The decline in domestic tourist visits has affected all aspects of tourism both accommodation and tourist attractions.

“All sectors are affected. In terms of hotels, it has more impact on three-star hotels. Meanwhile, the destination such as Tanah Lot, a favorite destination of domestic tourists, is also affected,” he added.

Other than domestic tourists, Cok Ace added that foreign tourist arrivals also experienced a decline, including tourists from China that is ranked top. Only two countries are recorded as rising, namely Germany and the United States even though in a relatively small volume. Chinese tourists are now reluctant to travel to Bali and move to other destinations because the payment system in Bali does not use WeChat and Alipay.

“They urged us to immediately be able to open or use their payment system,” he concluded while adding the target of foreign tourist visits had now been revised from 8 million to 7 million in 2019. Meanwhile, domestic tourists are targeted to reach 9 million.

When separately interviewed, a member of Commission II of the Bali House of Representatives, AA Ngurah Adhi Ardhana, said that tourism businesses everywhere will definitely decline if transportation costs increase. This needs to be anticipated by central government, even though there is an effort to reduce the price of airfare by up to 15 percent.

In the meantime, the ability of the community cannot be counted as simple as that.

“This is a risk in the business. If there is decline in domestic tourist visits, surely it will affect the tourist attraction because more domestic tourists come repeatedly,” said this PDI-P politician.

Adhi Ardhana added that various forms of new emerging attractions could not necessarily continue to attract tourists to come. Moreover, there are expensive price factors such as the rising airfares. Then, there is no strong synergy with the government. (kmb32)

Many violations still happen after determination of traffic diversion in Legian

MANGUPURA - After determination of the traffic diversion in the Legian area last March, the Badung Transportation Agency has also installed traffic signs on a number of diverted road sections. Although it has been determined, the violations still occur until now, especially on Jalan Nakula, Legian.

According to information from Headman of Legian, Made Madia Surya Natha, until now, there are still many road users violating.

Meanwhile, Traffic Division Head at the Badung Transportation Agency, Tofan Priyanto, confirmed the matter although it has been mutually agreed, but he admitted there are still violations in the area. “After a month-long trial was carried out,

the establishment was then resumed with the installation of road equipment facilities. However, in the field, there were violations. In terms of authority, it is indeed the authority of police,” said Tofan.

To follow up, his agency has written to police authority with a copy to all relevant stakeholders such as subdistrict, urban administrative village and all the hamlet chiefs, including the municipal police to jointly secure the agreement. As is known, before the determination regarding the traffic diversion, indeed this had become

a joint agreement.

However, the implementation might still be less effective and he will gather again to evaluate.

To secure shared commitment, he said the traffic diversion is indeed very beneficial because it can reduce congestion. For this reason, violations remaining to be found must be immediately followed up because what is agreed upon can be effective. “If there is no action yet, we must return to sit together and carry out evaluations related to prosecution in the field,” he hoped. NEW YORK - Rolling out her concept of fashion that is not a slave to the seasons or the shackles of Fashion Week, Rihanna opened the second pop-up shop of her Fenty brand in New York Tuesday, a month after the launch of the new fashion house in Paris.

Fenty, which the Barbados-born diva launched with French luxury powerhouse LVMH, has set up shop in fashionable Soho store The Webster and officially opens to the public from Wednesday until June 30.

It provided an occasion for the young fashion house to unveil a new mini-collection, called “6-19” after its launch date, following on from the inaugural “5-19” collection in Paris last month.

Some pieces from the first collection are back, alongside some new items, including a series of dresses and skirts in bold colors like orange or yellow but also some very dense prints.

The cuts are figure-hugging with plunging necklines and the label has chosen soft materials such as satin or mesh.

Most of the pieces are available online from Wednesday, with the exception of a set of T-shirts, at $230 each, which are only available in the store before being marketed online in July.

The prices of the collection are similar to the Paris offerings, which ranged from $250 for a T-shirt to more than $1,000 for a denim jacket or pantsuit.

Rihanna, the world’s richest female musician, is the first black woman to head up a fashion house for Paris-based LVMH, which owns Dior, Louis Vuitton, Fendi and Givenchy among others.

Up Pompeii! Paris men’s fashion goes Roman back in time PARIS - It was not quite the return of the toga, but Spanish wunderkind Alejandro Gomez Palomo turned the fashion clock back 2,000 years at his Paris men’s show Tuesday.

The flamboyant Andalusian conjured up Rome at its most decadent with a procession of beautiful boys who he claimed had just stepped from the frescos and mosaics of the lost city of Pompeii.

“Buried under the volcanic ashes of Mount Vesuvius lies a distant civilisation of Palomo boys who for centuries have been subject to a deep lethargy,” he declared.

Now they have come back to shake fashion from its long conformist sleep, he added, and to “become the man of the future”.

Palomo believes pretty dresses are not just for girls and his clothes can be worn by men, women and everyone in between in.

And you could imagine Nero or the boy emperor Elgabulus fighting with Madonna, Beyonce and Miley Cyrus -- all fans of his Palomo Spain label -- for some of his new gladiator glam.

Watch out for versions of his centurion sandals, which strode a stylish line between sneaker boot and espadrille, in the shops next summer.

To the sound of imperial trumpets, he sent out his resurrected Roman dandies, socialites and emperors in clever and erudite clothes made from everything from jute to the flounciest feathers.

- Laurels in their hair -

A Roman general’s armour was reimagined in dripping white Andalusian lace, legionnaires’ helmets evoked in chin strap headbands, breastplates turned into vinyl corsets, and dance floor dandies wore leather laurel leaves in their hair.

Palomo’s dive into Roman accessories -- armbands, torcs and chainmail -- was so deep, one model wore a golden nose similar to the solid gold hooter sported by the 7th-century Byzantine emperor Justinian II. As for the toga, he took it on a wild bacchanalian dance from a relatively simple embroidered tunic to the glammiest of tulle featherfringed evening dresses.

Despite their feminine line, Palomo insisted that his clothes are very much designed and tailored for men -- even if lots of women were now wearing them.

“I would never call them women’s dresses or say they are for women,” he told AFP. “Everything is for men.”

The 27-year-old designer said he wanted to “liberate” men from the straitjacket of suit and trousers.

“It’s great that women have helped get my clothes known, but I do not feel so qualified to design for them,” he added.

- Cowboy in a dress -

Palomo -- who lives and works far from the madding fashion crowd in his home village of Posadas near Cordoba -- weaved the Roman, Spanish and Arab influences of his native region into his clothes.

But there was also a nod to the transgender hijra culture of the Indian subcontinent.

Young New York designer Emily Adams Bode -- making made her Paris debut -- also has a sideways view of what men’s fashion should look like.

She had her vintage, vaguely aristo lost-boy models wear ballet pumps and cute stripey silk pyjama suits.

Bode is known for turning 100-year-old tablecloths or 1960s towels into rather beautiful shorts and jackets, all with the lightest of off-beam touches.

And she didn’t disappoint with her debut Paris collection that gently flirted with gender.

Another American debutant,

Spencer Phipps, took his inspiration from the much more straight-downthe-line urban cowboy, with Stetsons galore in his line of sustainable streetwear.

But that did not stop blurring the lines with one cowpoke wearing a dress over his hiking boots.

SWDN toyed with the unisex vibe in their show, wrapping the heads of several of their models in print scarves and then layering the motifs through their looks.

NEGARA - Pengeragoan rest area at Pengeragoan village, Pekutatan, has been operating for a long time. Road users, especially cars and motorbikes, prefer to rest around the Yeh Leh, the border between Jembrana and Tabanan. Actually, the rest area built by the regional government is mostly taken advantage by trucks especially at night until morning.

“In early morning, there are many trucks parked here. In the back, a lot of gazebos are usually used to take a break,” said Anom, 46, a road user. This condition is also seen on Wednesday morning (Jun. 19). A number of trucks were being

parked in the parking lot of the rest area on the DenpasarGilimanuk roadside.

Despite minimal lighting, many truck drivers choose to park their vehicles temporarily before continuing the journey.

“Here, I can rest for a while, sleep can also made down there (beach side). Unfortunately, it is difficult to find merchants,” said Yopi, one of the truck drivers met last Wednesday.

Condition of the building and park of the rest area is still sturdy and new. However, there is still a lot of garbage scattered especially in the front of the vehicle parking lot. Some stalls also look open even though the conditions are quiet.

One of the three stalls in the rest area is closed.

A different situation was seen around Yeh Leh tourist

attraction on the border of Jembrana and Tabanan. Stalls on the beach looked crowded with visitors, especially motorists that were resting. The stalls selling food such as chicken meatballs, noodles and young coconut are open until early morning.

Almost every time there are road users stopping by or just taking pictures in the border region. “Well, it is better here, over there many trucks are being parked. While here, there are also many merchants,” explained Anik Hariyati, 32, one of the travelers from East Java who stopped at Yeh Leh. This mother of two said she had stopped by the rest area not too far from Yeh Leh. According to her, it’s more comfortable to rest around Yeh Leh. (kmb26)

Dozens of accommodations in Badung unlicensed

MANGUPURA — Badung Municipal Police found dozens of unlicensed tourist accommodations operating in its territory. Results of the inspection carried out during January-April 2019 indicated that 234 buildings violated. Of the buildings, 97 buildings are alleged to be leased such as boarding house, inns, budget hotels, villas and the like.

Chief of Badung Municipal Police, I Gusti Agung Ketut Suryanegara, when asked for his confirmation on Wednesday (Jun. 19) justified the matter. According to him, the most violations were found in the Mengwi area, namely

in Munggu, Cemagi, Tumbak Bayuh and Pererenan. Similar violation was also found in North Kuta, South Kuta, Kuta.

“Violations that we have found are just submission of licensing. We will also continue to monitor those that do not have permission. We will continue to control all of the sub-districts in Badung,” he said.

On the other hand, Head of the Badung Tourism Office, I Made Badra, stated that tourism supporting facilities in Badung include restaurant (1,189 units), rental houses (1,095), non-star hotels (1,014), guest house (1,054), star hotel (298), condotels (47), and

spa (315).

“Currently, the data are being inputted in the tourism information system on the website of Badung district processed under the Communications and Informatics Agency. However, basically all the data have been inputted,” he said.

As is known, Regent of Badung, I Nyoman Giri Prasta, has issued the instruction of the Badung Regent Number 1/2016 where all the headmen and chief of urban administrative village across Badung can make data collection and submit the results of data collection on tourist accommodation in their regions. Tender for cliff injection at Uluwatu Temple opened next week

Fearful of elephant attacks, some in Botswana cheer hunting’s return

MANGUPURA - Related to cliff injection plan of Uluwatu Temple at Pecatu village, South Kuta, the Badung Public Works and Spatial Planning (PUPR) Agency immediately opened a tender process next week.

Division Head of Water Resources at PUPR Badung, AA Gede Agung Dalem, stated previously that it has been in the finalization stage of the ULP. Next week, it will be continued with the project tender process for one and a half months. “At the moment, we have entered finalization stage, while the tender process will be held next week,” he explained when confirmed on Wednesday (Jun. 19).

He said that to overcome the problem of cliff cracks in Uluwatu, the Badung district government allocates the budget of IDR 29 billion. Termination of the search will be made after seven days, in accordance with Article 18 of Government Regulation Number 22/2017 concerning Search and Rescue Operations. However, even though it has passed seven days, if new indications are found, they will follow up on the information directly.

As reported previously, at the time of the incident the victim was known to get too absorbed in playing paddle board. Ride on time: Recycled bikes get Myanmar kids to school

YANGON - The clangor of bells in the air, Myanmar children race home from school on recycled bikes shipped from Singapore and Malaysia, donated to give them easier access to education in a nation where more than half live in poverty.

Thae Su Wai will no longer need to trudge 10 kilometres (six miles) for two hours to and from lessons, she told AFP, beaming.

“I’ll have more time to study and play with friends,” she said, as she excitedly wheels away her new bicycle at Nhaw Kone Village school near Yangon.

The 11-year-old is among the first 200 students to receive bicycles as part of “Lesswalk”, the brainchild of Mandalay entrepreneur Mike Than Tun Win. He grew up and was educated in Singapore before returning home eight years ago with a business degree.

“I saw students walking for many hours to get to school and I felt really sorry for them,” the 33-year-old told AFP. UNICEF estimates 55 percent

of children in Myanmar live in poverty, while half of 17-year-olds enter adulthood with little or no education.

So when Mike heard that bikesharing companies oBike, Ofo and Mobike had pulled out from Singapore and Malaysia, leaving thousands of cycles in “graveyards”, he grabbed his chance.

The tech investor bought up 10,000 bikes earlier this year and shipped them to Myanmar.

After exchanging the bike-share lock for a seat on the back, he is now starting to hand out the bright orange and yellow cycles.

He hopes they will help keep more kids in school for longer, giving them an education so they can “escape from poverty”.

Each cycle cost him just $35, including shipping and distribution,

and he footed half the bill, with the other half coming from sponsors.

Yangon is Lesswalk’s first stop before Mike rolls out the scheme in Mandalay and Sagaing regions later this month.

Children aged 13-16 living more than two kilometres from school will be at the front of the queue.

“Most parents here are poor,” says Ni Ni Win, 55, headteacher of Thae Su Wai’s school.

“Many children don’t even have umbrellas -- they just use pieces of plastic to cover them when it rains.”

Mike says this is just the start -- the aim is to keep up momentum and hand out a total of 100,000 bikes over five years.

“They might not be worth anything in Singapore, but they’re valuable in a poorer country,” he said. (afp)

KASANE - An elephant carcass lies at the edge of a field in Legotlhwana village, northeast Botswana -- evidence of the desperation and anger felt by a farmer whose crops have been repeatedly destroyed.

Ishmael Simasiku, 71, indignantly recounts how he was guarding his field as he does every night when an elephant broke through the perimeter fence and helped itself to his watermelons.

Simasiku’s attempts to repel the elephant using torchlights and gunshots fired into the air were futile.

The animal only retreated briefly and returned.

Fed up, he shot it dead on May 14.

“The elephant came from the forest and was destroying my crops.

The (sports hunting) ban made my life worse,” said Simasiku, holding a watermelon half-eaten by an elephant.

The retired policeman in this village near the border with Namibia has seen his corn harvest fall by about 90 percent over recent years as elephant numbers have boomed.

Under the country’s wildlife conservation policy, Botswana’s elephant population has increased nearly 10fold since 1970, to 130,000 today, according to the UN Environment Programme.

As elephants grazed behind him in Chobe National Park , Thebeyakgosi Horatius, head of the park’s humanwildlife conflict office, confirms that elephants are “killing people (and) destroying their crops”.

His department runs a 24-hour emergency response team to react to elephant attacks.

Last month, the government lifted a blanket hunting ban, imposed in 2014 by then-president Ian Khama, on the grounds that elephant numbers were growing.

The decision angered many conservationists and stirred up a political

hornet’s nest as elections loom later this year.

“To me it’s so sad and extremely painful that all these years’ work to build up to what we had achieved is being put in reverse,” Khama told AFP by telephone.

“Our tourism is wildlife-based. We have already seen it taking a hit. I’m told our numbers have dropped by 10 percent since they started talking about (re-starting hunting).”

But an end to the ban on sports hunting has been welcomed by many Botswanans.

On April 26, Merafhe Shamukuni, 53, was walking home down a steep pathway in Kasane, Botswana’s wildlife tourist town, when he was attacked and killed by an elephant.

His sister, Dorcus Shamukuni, 49, tearfully remembers her brother who worked as a builder and cared for their wheelchair-bound father.

“No one expected he was going to die that way,” said Shamukuni.

While global conservationists are up in arms over the resumption of hunting, locals appeal for understanding over problems caused by freely roaming elephants which live unfenced in Botswana.

“We are here in Africa, facing this on a daily basis (and) all they are interested in is to come and see those animals for a few hours and go back where they are comfortable.

“We are in trouble, something really has to be done,” said Shamukuni, who works at a four-star hotel in Kasane.

But a five-year siege by Damascus and an intense bombing campaign that drove out opposition forces from the area last year has taken its toll on farmlands and crops.

The former rebel stronghold was once the garden of Damascus, supplying abundant fruit and vegetables as well as dairy products to the capital.

But intense bombing during a five-year blockade by the army that ended in the negotiated withdrawal of rebel forces and their families last year has taken its toll on the land.

His feet washed by the flow of water from a newly dug well, Hazaa labours away digging an irrigation canal that he hopes will help bring life back to his plot in the village of Deir al-Asafir.

Haza returned last year, six years after fleeing for the relative safety of Damascus when fierce fighting erupted in Eastern Ghouta.

“When I saw my scorched plot, I fell to my knees and cried,” said the balding 54-year-old. “It felt like

- ‘Like a desert’At the Deir al-Asafir municipality, local official Ahmad al-Hasan listened to the demands of farmers, most of them to do with irrigation.

“Their lands will return to what they once were,” he told AFP, adding that farmers were more optimistic after the plentiful rain.

Eastern Ghouta covers an area of around 10,400 hectares (25,700 acres), more than half of which are cultivated.

The region is the “primary source of the capital’s food, the lungs through which Damascus breathes”, Hasan said. “Every single house has a sur-

rounding plot with cows and chicken.

“Everyone works the land: the elderly and the young, men and women.” The head of the government’s agricultural office in Eastern Ghouta, Mohammed Mohieddine, says the region’s orchards will take longer to grow back.

The region has lost more than 80 percent of its trees, he said, as a result of the war or of felling for firewood during the blockade. “In some towns, not a single tree was left,” he said.

Under a beating sun, he walks along an avenue flanked by the stumps of dead trees.

“This road never used to see sunlight because the thick canopy of branches provided kilometres (miles) of shade,” he said. “Now it’s like a desert.”

This endeavor is carried out by arranging the road access heading for the object. All this time, there is not indeed road access to the waterfall object having alluring panorama.

Headman of Pejeng Kangin, I Gede Purniadi, clarified that his village does have beautiful objects that are not inferior to waterfalls elsewhere. The pristine waterfall is located near the Gana Temple at local village. “Since the waterfall sits near Gana Temple, it is called the Gana Waterfall,” he said not long ago.

According to him, the water flow of the waterfall sources from the Bukit Empelan of Pejeng, a tributary of Tukad Pakerisan’s river flow. Although it is believed to be a good object to take selfie, so far there is no direct access to this location. “Unfortunately, there is no road access to the location yet,” he said.

Local residents have started to clean up the location by walking along the existing paths and cliffs.

Skin deep: Japan’s ‘washi’ paper torn by modern life

HIDAKA - Once an indispensable part of daily life in Japan, ultra-thin washi paper was used for everything from writing and painting to lampshades, umbrellas, and sliding doors, but demand has plunged as lifestyles have become more westernised.

Despite its 1,300-year history and UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status, washi paper is struggling to attract consumers and the market value has dropped by more than 50 percent in the past two decades.

But at a small workshop in western Japan, Hiroyoshi Chinzei, a fourth-generation traditional paper maker, creates washi with a unique purpose that may help revive interest -- both at home and abroad.

Chinzei’s product, the world’s thinnest paper, has helped save historical documents at major museums and libraries -- including the Louvre in Paris, the British Museum and Washington’s Library of Congress -- from decay.

“Washi paper is more flexible and durable” than what Japanese refer to as “western paper”, which disintegrates into tiny pieces

when it becomes very old, the 50-year-old told AFP. The traditional hand-made paper is manufactured from plants called kozo, or mulberry, which has fibres that are much longer than materials used for paper in the west such as wood and cotton.

“Old Japanese books from the seventh or eighth century remain in good condition... thanks to the fibres of the kozo plants,” the washi maker told AFP at his small factory in Hidaka, a village 640 kilometres (400 miles) southwest of Tokyo.

- ‘Wings of a mayfly’ -

The papermaking process begins with steaming the kozo plants and peeling off the bark, which is then boiled until soft, while impurities are removed by hand in clear water.

The fibres are then beaten and mixed with glue and water, before being placed on a wooden screen.

This screen is then dipped repeatedly in water with the fibres and shaken to spread the liquid evenly to make a sheet of paper, a technique which requires years to master.

between two sheets of the paper, Chinzei explained.

For documents, transparency is key to be able to see the text, meaning the thinner the washi, the better.

Chinzei’s washi, a type called tengu-joshi paper also known as “the wings of a mayfly,” is 0.02 millimetres thick and weighs 1.6 grammes per square metre.

This compared to a standard sheet of photocopy paper, which is about 0.09 millimetres thick and weighs 70 grammes per square metre.

“It’s a mesh-like paper mainly made with fibres... It’s as thin as human skin,” Chinzei said.

Using both machines and hand-made techniques passed down for generations, the firm can create ultra-thin paper, which is also used by conservationists to restore and protect cultural objects.

- ‘Pure, strong and lasting’ -

One such conservationist, Takao Makino, carefully applies washi with a brush onto golden sticks representing the halo of a Buddhist statue estimated to be around 800 years old.

Makino said he used washi for the first time in 2007 to protect the surface of one of the two main statues at Tokyo’s historic Sensoji Temple.

“The surface was damaged and peeled off. So we covered all of it (with washi) to contain the damage,” the 68-year-old said.

“Washi naturally fits into intricately-shaped sculptures, but papers with chemical fibres or wrapping films don’t,” he said.

“The history proves washi is very durable... The material is pure, strong and lasting. It’s reliable.”

The production of the Japanese paper peaked in the Edo period between the 17th and late 19th centuries but declined as papermaking was mechanised.

Now, due to the westernisation of Japan, the washi market is shrinking again, Chinzei said.

“We have no tatami rooms and almost no space to display a hanging scroll in the current lifestyle,” he said.

“Washi used for those things are now gone.”

According to the industry ministry, the total value of handmade washi dropped to 1.78 billion yen in 2016 from 4.15 billion yen in 1998, while that of washi for calligraphy and shoji sliding screens fell to 5.86 billion yen from 25.1 billion yen.

Chinzei didn’t plan on taking over his family trade and went to business school in Seattle to study finance.

“But I came back... because I felt responsible for passing the baton to the next generation,” he said, hoping to find ways to expand the market.

The volume of washi used for restoration is still small, but it’s been shipped to more than 40 countries and Chinzei is hopeful interest will grow.

He explained: “For restoring cultural assets and as a canvas for art... I think washi has the potential to be used more in the world of art.” (afp)

100,000 South Koreans call for judge to be sacked over child rape case SEOUL - More than 100,000 South Koreans are demanding the dismissal of a judge who reduced the prison sentence of a child rapist to three years.

Lee, identified only by his surname, was jailed in November for eight years for raping a 10-year-old child after making her drink an alcoholic beverage at his house in 2018.

The 35-year-old, who runs a private tutoring company, claimed the sex was “consensual” and that he believed the victim was much older

than South Korea’s age of consent, which is 13.

Last week, Seoul high court judge Han Kyu-hyun reduced the sentence to three years, saying there was “insufficient evidence” -- other than the child’s testimony -- that Lee assaulted her.

Women’s rights activists and the public protested the verdict, saying child victims of sexual violence were not being protected.

“The victim was a 10-year-old, and it seems like the appeals court

treated the case as if she were an adult,” said Chun Jung-ah, a lawyer who has represented many victims of sexual assault.

By Thursday more than 115,000 South Koreans signed the online petition calling for Han to be dismissed.

“Our judiciary is extremely lenient towards the sex offenders,” the petition reads.

“This corrupt world -- where victims live in silence while perpetrators go on with their lives without shame, was possible because of judges like

him.”

Despite its economic and technological advances, South Korea remains a patriarchal society where victims of sexual assault have been shamed for coming forward.

In 2008, an eight-year-old girl was left disabled after being brutally raped and physically assaulted by a 57-year-old.

The man was given a reduced sentence of 12 years in prison -- rather than life -- because he was “drunk when he committed his crime”, ac-

Jokowi to highlight economic, environmental issues at ASEAN Summit

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) led a limited meeting here, Wednesday, to discuss preparations to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Bangkok, Thailand, and Group of Twenty (G20) Summit in Osaka, Japan.

“We must utilize the momentum offered by the two crucial meetings to the best possible extent to seize existing opportunities, specifically to boost our state’s economy and national interests,” President Jokowi affirmed while opening the meeting at the presidential office.

The head of state remarked that at the 34th ASEAN Summit, Indonesia will call on all member states to maintain a united stance in the face of the US-China trade war.

The president deems this move necessary to maintain economic stability in the Southeast Asian region. Furthermore, Indonesia will highlight efforts to address marine pollution during the ASEAN Summit.

“The third aspect concerns accelerating the realization of peace in Rakhine State, Myanmar,” he revealed.

In the meantime, Indonesia will draw attention to the global economy and finance at the G20 Summit.

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Darmin Na-

sution, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Ignasius Jonan, Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung, and Chairman of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Thomas Lembong were among the attendees at the meeting.

142 rare orchids planted in Bangka Belitung for flora preservation

PANGKALPINANG - Activists of environmental NGOs -- Bangka Flora Society (BFS) and Salam Alam Upang -- have planted 142 rare orchids under the initiative to preserve the flora in Bangka Belitung Islands Province.

“The orchid preservation activity is conducted in the Upang River biodiversity tourism area in Tanah Bawah Village, Puding Besar Sub-district,” BFS Chairperson Dian Rossana Angraini stated here on Thursday.

The orchids were planted in

commemoration of World Environment Day and Land Degradation Day that fell on June 17, 2019, for the preservation of flora.

The orchid species comprised Phalaenopsis sumatrana, Bulbophyllum limbatum, Dendriboum peradii, Ryncostyllus retusa

(squirrel’s tail vanda), Arundina grammyniflora, Maxilaria, Trixpermum, Oncydium, and Catlya.

Of the 142 orchids planted, 75 are gifts from the family of the late Elsye Taufif Rani, whose favorites are Phalaenopsis Sumatrana, Ryncostyllus retusa, and Maxilaria.

The late Elsye Lestari Taufiq Rani dedicated her life to the preservation of orchids, specifically those of Bangka Belitung’s endemic species. Hence, the Upang River biodiversity tourism area has been named in her honor. (ant)

‘Kyrgios good guy even if no respect for me,’ says Djokovic

BELGRADE - Novak Djokovic on Wednesday shrugged off Nick Kyrgios’s characterisation of him as “cringeworthy” and “having an obsession with wanting to be liked” by insisting the firebrand Australian is a “good guy”.

Kyrgios, more often in the headlines for what he says off the court than what he achieves on it, described world number one Djokovic as desperate to be held in the same high esteem as Roger Federer.

“I feel he wants to be liked so much that I just can’t stand him.

is so cringeworthy,” Kyrgios told NCR Tennis Podcast.

“No matter how many Grand Slams he wins, he will never be the greatest to me.

“He wants apparently to be true, open, transparent, that is part of his character.

“I respect him. Does he show me respect to the extent that others do? No, he does not. That’s just his way of communicating.”

Djokovic admitted that he had offered to help Kyrgios deal with fame and its various pitfalls.

“Five years ago I even offered him sort of help, in the sense that he could come to me if he needs anything, since at the beginning of my career I also experienced criticism against me.

“I was trying to respect everyone in life. I really don’t understand his reasons, but I respect him.”

Four-time Wimbledon champion Djokovic hasn’t played since a controversial five-set loss to Dominic Thiem in the semi-finals at Roland Garros.

Sebastian Vettel penalty review case set for French GP on Friday.

LE CASTELLET - Ferrari have been called to attend a hearing on Friday at the French Grand Prix to inquire into the team’s request for a review of Sebastian Vettel’s penalty at the Canadian Grand Prix.

The meeting is expected to be with the stewards of the French event acting as replacements on behalf of the Canadian stewards.

Four-time world champion Vettel won the Canadian race ‘on the road’ but was relegated to second place behind defending five-time champion Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes by a five seconds time penalty.

The penalty was given to Vettel for rejoining the race unsafely after going off track and across a strip of grass. As he rejoined he forced Hamilton to take avoiding action as he passed him at the first chicane.

The International Sporting Code of the sport’s ruling body, the International Motoring Federation (FIA), gives competitors an option for a post-event review of decisions, if new evidence is put forward. Under Article 14.1.1 of the code, the FIA can reconvene stewards or replacements to look again at the case.

After deciding not to proceed with an appeal, Ferrari lodged a request for an official review and on Thursday an announcement by the Canadian stewards called Ferrari representatives to the hearing.

The Canadian stewards were Emanuele Pirro, Gerd Ennser, Mathieu Remmerie and Mike Kaerne while Tim Mayer, Mathieu Remmerie, Yannick Dalmas and JeaMarie Krempff are the appointed stewards for the French event.

The draw left Argentina with one point from two games and on the bottom of the table with one game remaining. However with the two best third placed teams advancing to the quarter-finals, Argentina can still reach the last eight with a decisive win over Qatar in their final group game.

“We have to win,” Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni said of his team’s date with Qatar. “We will take stock of what we did well and what we did not do well and we will make decisions. We are lucky that we are still alive in this tournament,” added Scaloni, singling out goalkeeper Armani for special praise.

“We trust Franco,” Scaloni said. “He is our starting goalkeeper. He saved a penalty and kept us alive. I’m glad he had a good performance.”

The South American giants will need to raise their game however to advance any further after another disjointed performance which followed their opening defeat to Colombia on Saturday.

A lacklustre opening saw both sides struggle to generate any sort of attacking momentum, with neither side managing to get a shot on goal until Paraguay striker Derlis Gonzalez’s effort was deflected behind for a corner in the 29th minute.

From the ensuing setpiece, centre-half Junior Alonso scooped a half-chance wide as Argentina escaped.

That flurry of activity spurred Argentina fleetingly

at the other end, with Lautaro Martinez winning a free-kick in a dangerous position on the edge of the area after a foul by Paraguay skipper Gustavo Gomez.

Messi however was unable to conjure anything from the free-kick, floating his effort up and over the wall but without the pace to trouble goalkeeper Roberto Fernandez, who gathered comfortably.

In the 37th minute however, Paraguay’s more organised performance got its reward. A swift counter-attack saw the ball transferred to Newcastle United’s Miguel Almiron near halfway.

The livewire forward turned on the afterburners to roast Roberto Pereya down the left wing before crossing for Sanchez who drove a low finish into the bottom corner of the Argentina net.

A rattled Argentina were given a huge let-off moments later when Armani came racing out of his area to shut down Gonzalez. A wild kick brought down the Paraguayan player but Armani somehow escaped a red card and was only cautioned.

Scaloni went for broke at half-time, bolstering his attack with the introduction of Sergio Aguero and the move paid instant dividends.

Aguero deftly lost his marker on 51 minutes and pulled back for Martinez, whose shot cannoned off the woodwork. Messi pounced on the rebound but Fernandez blocked with a diving save.

The chance appeared to have gone begging but VAR had spotted that Martinez’s shot had in fact struck Ivan Piris’s arm before hitting the bar and Brazilian referee Wilson Sampaio pointed to the spot. Messi stepped up to sweep in the spot-kick and Argentina were level.

Yet there was more drama in the 62nd minute when Paraguay’s Gonzalez burst into the box and was clumsily hacked down by Nicolas Otamendi for a clear penalty.

Andres Guardado scored two second-half goals as Mexico went top of their CONCACAF Gold Cup group with a 3-1 victory over Canada on Wednesday.

Guardado scored from long-range in the 54th minute added another 13 minutes from time to give the Mexicans a second straight win at Invesco Field in Denver, Colorado, after they had thrashed Cuba 7-0 in the Group A opener.

Roberto Alvarado opened the scoring in the 40th minute as Mexico, without star players Javier Hernandez, Hector Herrera and Carlos Vela, made it two wins out of two on their quest to lift the Gold Cup for an eighth time.

Lucas Cavallini pulled one back for the 2000 CONCACAF champions Canada in the 75th minute when he latched on to Jonathan David’s pass and slid the ball under goalkeeper Francisco Ochoa.

Africa Cup of Nations hosts Egypt are confident of defeating Zimbabwe Friday in the opening match of a tournament expanded to 24 teams and staged in mid-year for the first time.

Egypt lie 51 places higher on the world rankings ahead of the Group A clash, top the title betting at 5/1 with Zimbabwe 150/1, and have won three of the four previous Cup of Nations they hosted.

“We are the favourites to win the 2019 Africa Cup,” said 60-year-old coach Javier Aguirre, the first Mexican to guide a nation that has won the competition a record seven times.

“Egypt are playing at home, can count on passionate support and have Mohamed Salah, the best footballer in Africa.” Salah has returned home after another stellar season with Liverpool, which he completed by scoring the first goal in a 2-0 Champions League final triumph over Tottenham Hotspur.

His 22 English Premier League goals last season gave him share of the Golden Boot title with two fellow Africans, Senegalese Sadio Mane and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of Gabon.

Aguirre says fears that his talisman may be jaded after a long season of Premier League and Champions League football are unfounded. “Mohamed took a holiday after the Champions League final, did not play in our first warm-up match and only came on after half-time in the second,” he countered.

Egypt beat fellow qualifiers Tanzania and Guinea and what pleased Aguirre most was not the results, but the large number of scoring chances the Pharaohs created.

‘Kyrgios good guy even if no respect for me,’ says Djokovic

BELGRADE - Novak Djokovic on Wednesday shrugged off Nick Kyrgios’s characterisation of him as “cringeworthy” and “having an obsession with wanting to be liked” by insisting the firebrand Australian is a “good guy”.

Kyrgios, more often in the headlines for what he says off the court than what he achieves on it, described world number one Djokovic as desperate to be held in the same high esteem as Roger Federer.

“I feel he wants to be liked so much that I just can’t stand him.

“I was trying to respect everyone in life. I really don’t understand his reasons, but I respect him.”

Sebastian Vettel penalty review case set for French GP on Friday.

LE CASTELLET - Ferrari have been called to attend a hearing on Friday at the French Grand Prix to inquire into the team’s request for a review of Sebastian Vettel’s penalty at the Canadian Grand Prix.

The meeting is expected to be with the stewards of the French event acting as replacements on behalf of the Canadian stewards.

Four-time world champion Vettel won the Canadian race ‘on the road’ but was relegated to second place behind defending five-time champion Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes by a five seconds time penalty.

The penalty was given to Vettel for rejoining the race unsafely after going off track and across a strip of grass. As he rejoined he forced Hamilton to take avoiding action as he passed him at the first chicane.

The International Sporting Code of the sport’s ruling body, the International Motoring Federation (FIA), gives competitors an option for a post-event review of decisions, if new evidence is put forward. Under Article 14.1.1 of the code, the FIA can reconvene stewards or replacements to look again at the case.

After deciding not to proceed with an appeal, Ferrari lodged a request for an official review and on Thursday an announcement by the Canadian stewards called Ferrari representatives to the hearing.

The Canadian stewards were Emanuele Pirro, Gerd Ennser, Mathieu Remmerie and Mike Kaerne while Tim Mayer, Mathieu Remmerie, Yannick Dalmas and JeaMarie Krempff are the appointed stewards for the French event.

Skin deep: Japan’s ‘washi’ paper torn by modern life

HIDAKA - Once an indispensable part of daily life in Japan, ultra-thin washi paper was used for everything from writing and painting to lampshades, umbrellas, and sliding doors, but demand has plunged as lifestyles have become more westernised.

Despite its 1,300-year history and UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status, washi paper is struggling to attract consumers and the market value has dropped by more than 50 percent in the past two decades.

But at a small workshop in western Japan, Hiroyoshi Chinzei, a fourth-generation traditional paper maker, creates washi with a unique purpose that may help revive interest -- both at home and abroad.

Chinzei’s product, the world’s thinnest paper, has helped save historical documents at major museums and libraries -- including the Louvre in Paris, the British Museum and Washington’s Library of Congress -- from decay.

“Washi paper is more flexible and durable” than what Japanese refer to as “western paper”, which disintegrates into tiny pieces

when it becomes very old, the 50-year-old told AFP. The traditional hand-made paper is manufactured from plants called kozo, or mulberry, which has fibres that are much longer than materials used for paper in the west such as wood and cotton.

“Old Japanese books from the seventh or eighth century remain in good condition... thanks to the fibres of the kozo plants,” the washi maker told AFP at his small factory in Hidaka, a village 640 kilometres (400 miles) southwest of Tokyo.

- ‘Wings of a mayfly’ -

The papermaking process begins with steaming the kozo plants and peeling off the bark, which is then boiled until soft, while impurities are removed by hand in clear water.

The fibres are then beaten and mixed with glue and water, before being placed on a wooden screen.

This screen is then dipped repeatedly in water with the fibres and shaken to spread the liquid evenly to make a sheet of paper, a technique which requires years to master.

between two sheets of the paper, Chinzei explained.

For documents, transparency is key to be able to see the text, meaning the thinner the washi, the better.

Chinzei’s washi, a type called tengu-joshi paper also known as “the wings of a mayfly,” is 0.02 millimetres thick and weighs 1.6 grammes per square metre.

This compared to a standard sheet of photocopy paper, which is about 0.09 millimetres thick and weighs 70 grammes per square metre.

“It’s a mesh-like paper mainly made with fibres... It’s as thin as human skin,” Chinzei said.

Using both machines and hand-made techniques passed down for generations, the firm can create ultra-thin paper, which is also used by conservationists to restore and protect cultural objects.

- ‘Pure, strong and lasting’ -

One such conservationist, Takao Makino, carefully applies washi with a brush onto golden sticks representing the halo of a Buddhist statue estimated to be around 800 years old.

Makino said he used washi for the first time in 2007 to protect the surface of one of the two main statues at Tokyo’s historic Sensoji Temple.

“The surface was damaged and peeled off. So we covered all of it (with washi) to contain the damage,” the 68-year-old said.

“Washi naturally fits into intricately-shaped sculptures, but papers with chemical fibres or wrapping films don’t,” he said.

“The history proves washi is very durable... The material is pure, strong and lasting. It’s reliable.”

The production of the Japanese paper peaked in the Edo period between the 17th and late 19th centuries but declined as papermaking was mechanised.

Now, due to the westernisation of Japan, the washi market is shrinking again, Chinzei said.

“We have no tatami rooms and almost no space to display a hanging scroll in the current lifestyle,” he said.

“Washi used for those things are now gone.”

According to the industry ministry, the total value of handmade washi dropped to 1.78 billion yen in 2016 from 4.15 billion yen in 1998, while that of washi for calligraphy and shoji sliding screens fell to 5.86 billion yen from 25.1 billion yen.

Chinzei didn’t plan on taking over his family trade and went to business school in Seattle to study finance.

“But I came back... because I felt responsible for passing the baton to the next generation,” he said, hoping to find ways to expand the market.

The volume of washi used for restoration is still small, but it’s been shipped to more than 40 countries and Chinzei is hopeful interest will grow.

He explained: “For restoring cultural assets and as a canvas for art... I think washi has the potential to be used more in the world of art.” (afp)

100,000 South Koreans call for judge to be sacked over child rape case SEOUL - More than 100,000 South Koreans are demanding the dismissal of a judge who reduced the prison sentence of a child rapist to three years.

Lee, identified only by his surname, was jailed in November for eight years for raping a 10-year-old child after making her drink an alcoholic beverage at his house in 2018.

The 35-year-old, who runs a private tutoring company, claimed the sex was “consensual” and that he believed the victim was much older

than South Korea’s age of consent, which is 13.

Last week, Seoul high court judge Han Kyu-hyun reduced the sentence to three years, saying there was “insufficient evidence” -- other than the child’s testimony -- that Lee assaulted her.

Women’s rights activists and the public protested the verdict, saying child victims of sexual violence were not being protected.

“The victim was a 10-year-old, and it seems like the appeals court

treated the case as if she were an adult,” said Chun Jung-ah, a lawyer who has represented many victims of sexual assault.

By Thursday more than 115,000 South Koreans signed the online petition calling for Han to be dismissed.

“Our judiciary is extremely lenient towards the sex offenders,” the petition reads.

“This corrupt world -- where victims live in silence while perpetrators go on with their lives without shame, was possible because of judges like

him.”

Despite its economic and technological advances, South Korea remains a patriarchal society where victims of sexual assault have been shamed for coming forward.

In 2008, an eight-year-old girl was left disabled after being brutally raped and physically assaulted by a 57-year-old.

The man was given a reduced sentence of 12 years in prison -- rather than life -- because he was “drunk when he committed his crime”, ac-

cording to the court’s controversial ruling.

A number of proposals to raise the country’s age of consent to 16 have been submitted to the National Assembly, but none have been approved.

“Most lawmakers don’t pay much attention to this issue because 13-year-olds and 16-year-olds are not eligible to vote,” said lawyer Chun.

Jokowi to highlight economic, environmental issues at ASEAN Summit

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) led a limited meeting here, Wednesday, to discuss preparations to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Bangkok, Thailand, and Group of Twenty (G20) Summit in Osaka, Japan.

“We must utilize the momentum offered by the two crucial meetings to the best possible extent to seize existing opportunities, specifically to boost our state’s economy and national interests,” President Jokowi affirmed while opening the meeting at the presidential office.

The head of state remarked that at the 34th ASEAN Summit, Indonesia will call on all member states to maintain a united stance in the face of the US-China trade war.

The president deems this move necessary to maintain economic stability in the Southeast Asian region. Furthermore, Indonesia will highlight efforts to address marine pollution during the ASEAN Summit.

“The third aspect concerns accelerating the realization of peace in Rakhine State, Myanmar,” he revealed.

In the meantime, Indonesia will draw attention to the global economy and finance at the G20 Summit.

12:46 am local time, at a depth of 12 kilometres, according to the US Geological Survey.

The quake was felt weakly in Abepura, but most people did not notice it. “I was still awake at home but I did not feel it all

142 rare orchids planted in Bangka Belitung for flora preservation

PANGKALPINANG - Activists of environmental NGOs -- Bangka Flora Society (BFS) and Salam Alam Upang -- have planted 142 rare orchids under the initiative to preserve the flora in Bangka Belitung Islands Province.

“The orchid preservation activity is conducted in the Upang River biodiversity tourism area in Tanah Bawah Village, Puding Besar Sub-district,” BFS Chairperson Dian Rossana Angraini stated here on Thursday.

The orchids were planted in

commemoration of World Environment Day and Land Degradation Day that fell on June 17, 2019, for the preservation of flora.

The orchid species comprised Phalaenopsis sumatrana, Bulbophyllum limbatum, Dendriboum peradii, Ryncostyllus retusa

(squirrel’s tail vanda), Arundina grammyniflora, Maxilaria, Trixpermum, Oncydium, and Catlya.

Of the 142 orchids planted, 75 are gifts from the family of the late Elsye Taufif Rani, whose favorites are Phalaenopsis Sumatrana, Ryncostyllus retusa, and Maxilaria.

The late Elsye Lestari Taufiq Rani dedicated her life to the preservation of orchids, specifically those of Bangka Belitung’s endemic species. Hence, the Upang River biodiversity tourism area has been named in her honor. (ant)

The former opposition stronghold of Eastern Ghouta region was once the breadbasket of Damascus, providing rich harvests of apricots and vegetables to the capital. But a five-year siege by Damascus and an intense bombing campaign that drove out opposition forces from the area last year has taken its toll on farmlands and crops.

A slow road to recovery for Eastern Ghouta farms

The former rebel stronghold was once the garden of Damascus, supplying abundant fruit and vegetables as well as dairy products to the capital.

But intense bombing during a five-year blockade by the army that ended in the negotiated withdrawal of rebel forces and their families last year has taken its toll on the land.

His feet washed by the flow of water from a newly dug well, Hazaa labours away digging an irrigation canal that he hopes will help bring life back to his plot in the village of Deir al-Asafir.

Haza returned last year, six years after fleeing for the relative safety of Damascus when fierce fighting erupted in Eastern Ghouta.

“When I saw my scorched plot, I fell to my knees and cried,” said the balding 54-year-old. “It felt like

“Their lands will return to what they once were,” he told AFP, adding that farmers were more optimistic after the plentiful rain.

Eastern Ghouta covers an area of around 10,400 hectares (25,700 acres), more than half of which are cultivated.

The region is the “primary source of the capital’s food, the lungs through which Damascus breathes”, Hasan said. “Every single house has a sur-

rounding plot with cows and chicken.

“Everyone works the land: the elderly and the young, men and women.” The head of the government’s agricultural office in Eastern Ghouta, Mohammed Mohieddine, says the region’s orchards will take longer to grow back.

The region has lost more than 80 percent of its trees, he said, as a result of the war or of felling for firewood during the blockade. “In some towns, not a single tree was left,” he said.

Under a beating sun, he walks along an avenue flanked by the stumps of dead trees.

“This road never used to see sunlight because the thick canopy of branches provided kilometres (miles) of shade,” he said. “Now it’s like a desert.”

Pejeng Kangin village, Tampaksiring, is now beginning to develop the potential of Gana Waterfall.

This endeavor is carried out by arranging the road access heading for the object. All this time, there is not indeed road access to the waterfall object having alluring panorama.

Headman of Pejeng Kangin, I Gede Purniadi, clarified that his village does have beautiful objects that are not inferior to waterfalls elsewhere. The pristine waterfall is located near the Gana Temple at local village. “Since the waterfall sits near Gana Temple, it is called the Gana Waterfall,” he said not long ago.

According to him, the water flow of the waterfall sources from the Bukit Empelan of Pejeng, a tributary of Tukad Pakerisan’s river flow. Although it is believed to be a good object to take selfie, so far there is no direct access to this location. “Unfortunately, there is no road access to the location yet,” he said.

Though having had no proper access, the headman and other residents are optimistic to develop the waterfall as a tourist attraction. “There is entry access along about 400 meters from the parking lot belonging to village temple’s property. But no access is avail41st Bali Art Festival

able yet to get to the location of the waterfall,” he explained.

Local residents have started to clean up the location by walking along the existing paths and cliffs.

He and the residents carried out cleanup in the area of ??the waterfall from drifted wooden twigs.

Likewise, plastic waste under the waterfall is taken up.

“By and large, we do mutual assistance on Fridays, but we also do extra activities on Wednesdays.

This is our step in making people aware of waste, and we are embarrassed later after getting the predicate as tourism village but plastic waste remains scattered,” he said.

He also revealed the budget required to build the road access to the location of Gana Waterfall is estimated to reach approximately IDR 250 million, namely for the making of pathway of 1.5 meters wide and 400 meters long.

Other than having the waterfall tourism, the village also has other potential like the Kerobokan Cliff Temple, trekking and cycling paths in paddy fields with a track length of about 10 kilometers. “We already have the tourism potential. Tender for cliff injection at Uluwatu Temple opened next week

Fearful of elephant attacks, some in Botswana cheer hunting’s return

MANGUPURA - Related to cliff injection plan of Uluwatu Temple at Pecatu village, South Kuta, the Badung Public Works and Spatial Planning (PUPR) Agency immediately opened a tender process next week.

Division Head of Water Resources at PUPR Badung, AA Gede Agung Dalem, stated previously that it has been in the finalization stage of the ULP. Next week, it will be continued with the project tender process for one and a half months. “At the moment, we have entered finalization stage, while the tender process will be held next week,” he explained when confirmed on Wednesday (Jun. 19).

He said that to overcome the problem of cliff cracks in Uluwatu, the Badung district government allocates the budget of IDR 29 billion. Such budget is considered very reasonable because cliff injection is categorized as special jobs. So, it must go through stages and various processes that are mature before doing the work.

Learning from the failure of tenders in 2018, he will coordinate and disseminate with various parties in injecting the cliff.

“Since this work requires special expertise, everything must be considered, we will continue to coordinate with various parties including the winners of the tender later. This is for the best work on the Uluwatu Temple cliffs,” he explained.

So, on the third day of the search process, it was decided to sweep the area and extended to Benoa, Serangan and Lebih, by deploying two inflatable boats. There was also another boat deployed to around Nusa Dua. Meanwhile, some personnel of Patrol Unit of Bali Police still conducted sweeping around.

Although the search process has been carried out from that morning to evening, Wirawan said the victim had not been found at all. So, it cannot be ascertained, whether the victim is still safe or not. “The

process of searching for the victim according to the rules will be carried out for seven days. If he has not been found today, we will continue again tomorrow, with another sweeping location,” said Wirawan.

Termination of the search will be made after seven days, in accordance with Article 18 of Government Regulation Number 22/2017 concerning Search and Rescue Operations. However, even though it has passed seven days, if new indications are found, they will follow up on the information directly.

As reported previously, at the time of the incident the victim was known to get too absorbed in playing paddle board. According to eyewitness, namely paddle board rental owner, Aviv played too far into the middle of the sea. The incident is estimated to happen around 14:30. Since then, the victim has not returned. After the incident, Denpasar’s Search and Rescue Office received a report from Kadek Suwika on Monday (Jun. 17).

The surrounding waters are

indeed known to be mysterious.

Ride on time: Recycled bikes get Myanmar kids to school

YANGON - The clangor of bells in the air, Myanmar children race home from school on recycled bikes shipped from Singapore and Malaysia, donated to give them easier access to education in a nation where more than half live in poverty.

Thae Su Wai will no longer need to trudge 10 kilometres (six miles) for two hours to and from lessons, she told AFP, beaming.

“I’ll have more time to study and play with friends,” she said, as she excitedly wheels away her new bicycle at Nhaw Kone Village school near Yangon.

The 11-year-old is among the first 200 students to receive bicycles as part of “Lesswalk”, the brainchild of Mandalay entrepreneur Mike Than Tun Win. He grew up and was educated in Singapore before returning home eight years ago with a business degree.

“I saw students walking for many hours to get to school and I felt really sorry for them,” the 33-year-old told AFP. UNICEF estimates 55 percent

of children in Myanmar live in poverty, while half of 17-year-olds enter adulthood with little or no education.

So when Mike heard that bikesharing companies oBike, Ofo and Mobike had pulled out from Singapore and Malaysia, leaving thousands of cycles in “graveyards”, he grabbed his chance.

The tech investor bought up 10,000 bikes earlier this year and shipped them to Myanmar.

After exchanging the bike-share lock for a seat on the back, he is now starting to hand out the bright orange and yellow cycles.

He hopes they will help keep more kids in school for longer, giving them an education so they can “escape from poverty”.

Each cycle cost him just $35, including shipping and distribution,

and he footed half the bill, with the other half coming from sponsors.

Yangon is Lesswalk’s first stop before Mike rolls out the scheme in Mandalay and Sagaing regions later this month.

Children aged 13-16 living more than two kilometres from school will be at the front of the queue.

“Most parents here are poor,” says Ni Ni Win, 55, headteacher of Thae Su Wai’s school.

“Many children don’t even have umbrellas -- they just use pieces of plastic to cover them when it rains.”

Mike says this is just the start -- the aim is to keep up momentum and hand out a total of 100,000 bikes over five years.

“They might not be worth anything in Singapore, but they’re valuable in a poorer country,” he said. (afp)

KASANE - An elephant carcass lies at the edge of a field in Legotlhwana village, northeast Botswana -- evidence of the desperation and anger felt by a farmer whose crops have been repeatedly destroyed.

Ishmael Simasiku, 71, indignantly recounts how he was guarding his field as he does every night when an elephant broke through the perimeter fence and helped itself to his watermelons.

Simasiku’s attempts to repel the elephant using torchlights and gunshots fired into the air were futile.

The animal only retreated briefly and returned.

Fed up, he shot it dead on May 14.

“The elephant came from the forest and was destroying my crops.

The (sports hunting) ban made my life worse,” said Simasiku, holding a watermelon half-eaten by an elephant.

The retired policeman in this village near the border with Namibia has seen his corn harvest fall by about 90 percent over recent years as elephant numbers have boomed.

Under the country’s wildlife conservation policy, Botswana’s elephant population has increased nearly 10fold since 1970, to 130,000 today, according to the UN Environment Programme.

As elephants grazed behind him in Chobe National Park , Thebeyakgosi Horatius, head of the park’s humanwildlife conflict office, confirms that elephants are “killing people (and) destroying their crops”.

His department runs a 24-hour emergency response team to react to elephant attacks.

Last month, the government lifted a blanket hunting ban, imposed in 2014 by then-president Ian Khama, on the grounds that elephant numbers were growing.

The decision angered many conservationists and stirred up a political

hornet’s nest as elections loom later this year.

“To me it’s so sad and extremely painful that all these years’ work to build up to what we had achieved is being put in reverse,” Khama told AFP by telephone.

“Our tourism is wildlife-based. We have already seen it taking a hit. I’m told our numbers have dropped by 10 percent since they started talking about (re-starting hunting).”

- Locals appeal for understanding Tourism is the second largest contributor to Botswana’s GDP after diamonds.

But an end to the ban on sports hunting has been welcomed by many Botswanans.

On April 26, Merafhe Shamukuni, 53, was walking home down a steep pathway in Kasane, Botswana’s wildlife tourist town, when he was attacked and killed by an elephant.

His sister, Dorcus Shamukuni, 49, tearfully remembers her brother who worked as a builder and cared for their wheelchair-bound father.

“No one expected he was going to die that way,” said Shamukuni.

While global conservationists are up in arms over the resumption of hunting, locals appeal for understanding over problems caused by freely roaming elephants which live unfenced in Botswana.

“We are here in Africa, facing this on a daily basis (and) all they are interested in is to come and see those animals for a few hours and go back where they are comfortable.

“We are in trouble, something really has to be done,” said Shamukuni, who works at a four-star hotel in Kasane.

“I work in tourism, I know the importance of animals... but I don’t see the reason they should be killing us in this manner. (afp)

NEW YORK - Rolling out her concept of fashion that is not a slave to the seasons or the shackles of Fashion Week, Rihanna opened the second pop-up shop of her Fenty brand in New York Tuesday, a month after the launch of the new fashion house in Paris.

Fenty, which the Barbados-born diva launched with French luxury powerhouse LVMH, has set up shop in fashionable Soho store The Webster and officially opens to the public from Wednesday until June 30.

It provided an occasion for the young fashion house to unveil a new mini-collection, called “6-19” after its launch date, following on from the inaugural “5-19” collection in Paris last month.

Some pieces from the first collection are back, alongside some new items, including a series of dresses and skirts in bold colors like orange or yellow but also some very dense prints.

The cuts are figure-hugging with plunging necklines and the label has chosen soft materials such as satin or mesh.

Most of the pieces are available online from Wednesday, with the exception of a set of T-shirts, at $230 each, which are only available in the store before being marketed online in July.

The prices of the collection are similar to the Paris offerings, which ranged from $250 for a T-shirt to more than $1,000 for a denim jacket or pantsuit.

Rihanna, the world’s richest female musician, is the first black woman to head up a fashion house for Paris-based LVMH, which owns Dior, Louis Vuitton, Fendi and Givenchy among others.

Fenty, named for the 31-year-old singer, born Robyn Rihanna Fenty, is LVMH’s first new luxury brand from scratch since the launch of Christian Lacroix in 1987. (afp)

Up Pompeii! Paris men’s fashion goes Roman back in time PARIS - It was not quite the return of the toga, but Spanish wunderkind Alejandro Gomez Palomo turned the fashion clock back 2,000 years at his Paris men’s show Tuesday.

The flamboyant Andalusian conjured up Rome at its most decadent with a procession of beautiful boys who he claimed had just stepped from the frescos and mosaics of the lost city of Pompeii.

“Buried under the volcanic ashes of Mount Vesuvius lies a distant civilisation of Palomo boys who for centuries have been subject to a deep lethargy,” he declared.

Now they have come back to shake fashion from its long conformist sleep, he added, and to “become the man of the future”.

Palomo believes pretty dresses are not just for girls and his clothes can be worn by men, women and everyone in between in.

And you could imagine Nero or the boy emperor Elgabulus fighting with Madonna, Beyonce and Miley Cyrus -- all fans of his Palomo Spain label -- for some of his new gladiator glam.

Watch out for versions of his centurion sandals, which strode a stylish line between sneaker boot and espadrille, in the shops next summer.

To the sound of imperial trumpets, he sent out his resurrected Roman dandies, socialites and emperors in clever and erudite clothes made from everything from jute to the flounciest feathers.

- Laurels in their hair -

A Roman general’s armour was reimagined in dripping white Andalusian lace, legionnaires’ helmets evoked in chin strap headbands, breastplates turned into vinyl corsets, and dance floor dandies wore leather laurel leaves in their hair.

Palomo’s dive into Roman accessories -- armbands, torcs and chainmail -- was so deep, one model wore a golden nose similar to the solid gold hooter sported by the 7th-century Byzantine emperor Justinian II. As for the toga, he took it on a wild bacchanalian dance from a relatively simple embroidered tunic to the glammiest of tulle featherfringed evening dresses.

Despite their feminine line, Palomo insisted that his clothes are very much designed and tailored for men -- even if lots of women were now wearing them.

“I would never call them women’s dresses or say they are for women,” he told AFP. “Everything is for men.”

The 27-year-old designer said he wanted to “liberate” men from the straitjacket of suit and trousers.

“It’s great that women have helped get my clothes known, but I do not feel so qualified to design for them,” he added.

- Cowboy in a dress -

Palomo -- who lives and works far from the madding fashion crowd in his home village of Posadas near Cordoba -- weaved the Roman, Spanish and Arab influences of his native region into his clothes.

But there was also a nod to the transgender hijra culture of the Indian subcontinent.

Young New York designer Emily Adams Bode -- making made her Paris debut -- also has a sideways view of what men’s fashion should look like.

She had her vintage, vaguely aristo lost-boy models wear ballet pumps and cute stripey silk pyjama suits.

Bode is known for turning 100-year-old tablecloths or 1960s towels into rather beautiful shorts and jackets, all with the lightest of off-beam touches.

And she didn’t disappoint with her debut Paris collection that gently flirted with gender.

Another American debutant,

Spencer Phipps, took his inspiration from the much more straight-downthe-line urban cowboy, with Stetsons galore in his line of sustainable streetwear.

But that did not stop blurring the lines with one cowpoke wearing a dress over his hiking boots.

Road users, especially cars and motorbikes, prefer to rest around the Yeh Leh, the border between Jembrana and Tabanan. Actually, the rest area built by the regional government is mostly taken advantage by trucks especially at night until morning.

“In early morning, there are many trucks parked here. In the back, a lot of gazebos are usually used to take a break,” said Anom, 46, a road user. This condition is also seen on Wednesday morning (Jun. 19). A number of trucks were being

parked in the parking lot of the rest area on the DenpasarGilimanuk roadside.

Despite minimal lighting, many truck drivers choose to park their vehicles temporarily before continuing the journey.

“Here, I can rest for a while, sleep can also made down there (beach side). Unfortunately, it is difficult to find merchants,” said Yopi, one of the truck drivers met last Wednesday.

Condition of the building and park of the rest area is still sturdy and new. However, there is still a lot of garbage scattered especially in the front of the vehicle parking lot. Some stalls also look open even though the conditions are quiet.

One of the three stalls in the rest area is closed.

A different situation was seen around Yeh Leh tourist

attraction on the border of Jembrana and Tabanan. Stalls on the beach looked crowded with visitors, especially motorists that were resting. The stalls selling food such as chicken meatballs, noodles and young coconut are open until early morning.

Almost every time there are road users stopping by or just taking pictures in the border region. “Well, it is better here, over there many trucks are being parked. While here, there are also many merchants,” explained Anik Hariyati, 32, one of the travelers from East Java who stopped at Yeh Leh. MANGUPURA — Badung Municipal Police found dozens of unlicensed tourist accommodations operating in its territory. Results of the inspection carried out during January-April 2019 indicated that 234 buildings violated. Of the buildings, 97 buildings are alleged to be leased such as boarding house, inns, budget hotels, villas and the like.

Chief of Badung Municipal Police, I Gusti Agung Ketut Suryanegara, when asked for his confirmation on Wednesday (Jun. 19) justified the matter. According to him, the most violations were found in the Mengwi area, namely

in Munggu, Cemagi, Tumbak Bayuh and Pererenan. Similar violation was also found in North Kuta, South Kuta, Kuta.

“Violations that we have found are just submission of licensing. We will also continue to monitor those that do not have permission. We will continue to control all of the sub-districts in Badung,” he said.

On the other hand, Head of the Badung Tourism Office, I Made Badra, stated that tourism supporting facilities in Badung include restaurant (1,189 units), rental houses (1,095), non-star hotels (1,014), guest house (1,054), star hotel (298), condotels (47), and

spa (315).

“Currently, the data are being inputted in the tourism information system on the website of Badung district processed under the Communications and Informatics Agency. However, basically all the data have been inputted,” he said.

As is known, Regent of Badung, I Nyoman Giri Prasta, has issued the instruction of the Badung Regent Number 1/2016 where all the headmen and chief of urban administrative village across Badung can make data collection and submit the results of data collection on tourist accommodation in their regions. DENPASAR - The high price of airfares has resulted in a decrease in tourist visits to Bali. When compared to May 2018, tourist arrivals in May 2019 dropped by 12 percent. Especially for domestic tourists, the decline even reached 20 to 30 percent.

This was conveyed by Deputy Governor of Bali, Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardhana Sukawati, after attending a plenary session at the Bali House of Representatives on Wednesday (Jun. 19). “It has a great impact big. So our tourism conditions have slightly declined especially domestic ones. Yesterday, we monitored some destinations commonly crowded with domestic tourists, they dropped dramatically,” said the man familiarly addressed as Cok Ace. According to Cok Ace, the decline in domestic tourist visits indeed did not happen 100 percent due to the expensive airfares. However, it is also affected by the opening of the Jakarta-East Java toll road. Most tourists ride private vehicles through the infrastructure and eventually don’t get to Bali.

“Most of them only arrived in Malang. So, if this can be continued, indeed our overland can revive. However, the

infrastructure in Bali must also be repaired,” explained the former regent of Gianyar.

At present, Cok Ace continued, overland routes have not much boosted tourist arrivals. On the contrary, the presence of the Jakarta-East Java toll road actually raises competitors for Bali tourism. On that account, the Denpasar-Gilimanuk infrastructure must be realized immediately to connect to the Trans Java-Bali. The decline in domestic tourist visits has affected all aspects of tourism both accommodation and tourist attractions.

“All sectors are affected. In terms of hotels, it has more impact on three-star hotels. Meanwhile, the destination such as Tanah Lot, a favorite destination of domestic tourists, is also affected,” he added.

Other than domestic tourists, Cok Ace added that foreign tourist arrivals also experienced a decline, including tourists from China that is ranked top. Only two countries are recorded as rising, namely Germany and the United States even though in a relatively small volume. Chinese tourists are now reluctant to travel to Bali and move to other destinations because the payment system in Bali does not use WeChat and Alipay.

“They urged us to immediately be able to open or use their payment system,” he concluded while adding the target of foreign tourist visits had now been revised from 8 million to 7 million in 2019. Meanwhile, domestic tourists are targeted to reach 9 million.

When separately interviewed, a member of Commission II of the Bali House of Representatives, AA Ngurah Adhi Ardhana, said that tourism businesses everywhere will definitely decline if transportation costs increase. This needs to be anticipated by central government, even though there is an effort to reduce the price of airfare by up to 15 percent.

In the meantime, the ability of the community cannot be counted as simple as that.

“This is a risk in the business. If there is decline in domestic tourist visits, surely it will affect the tourist attraction because more domestic tourists come repeatedly,” said this PDI-P politician.

Adhi Ardhana added that various forms of new emerging attractions could not necessarily continue to attract tourists to come. Moreover, there are expensive price factors such as the rising airfares. Then, there is no strong synergy with the government. (kmb32)

MANGUPURA - After determination of the traffic diversion in the Legian area last March, the Badung Transportation Agency has also installed traffic signs on a number of diverted road sections. Although it has been determined, the violations still occur until now, especially on Jalan Nakula, Legian.

According to information from Headman of Legian, Made Madia Surya Natha, until now, there are still many road users violating.

Moreover, community protection officers always fix the position of the barrier when patrolling. “When

being installed with road barrier, they often violated. The violation will surely be rampant without it.

From the Jalan Nakula westward there is indeed still violation,” he said when confirmed on Wednesday (Jun. 19).

He revealed that Badung Transportation Agency had written to police department to be able to take action if anyone found violating.

Thus, his agency hoped police can provide decisive action to obey what has been agreed and determined.

He admitted that to take action, there are indeed different percep-

tions between the Transportation Agency and the police authority.

Transportation Agency can take action a month after the determination of the traffic diversion while police can only take action three months after the determination.

“This is a difference in perception,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, Traffic Division Head at the Badung Transportation Agency, Tofan Priyanto, confirmed the matter although it has been mutually agreed, but he admitted there are still violations in the area. “After a month-long trial was carried out,

the establishment was then resumed with the installation of road equipment facilities. However, in the field, there were violations. In terms of authority, it is indeed the authority of police,” said Tofan.

To follow up, his agency has written to police authority with a copy to all relevant stakeholders such as subdistrict, urban administrative village and all the hamlet chiefs, including the municipal police to jointly secure the agreement. As is known, before the determination regarding the traffic diversion, indeed this had become

a joint agreement.

However, the implementation might still be less effective and he will gather again to evaluate.

To secure shared commitment, he said the traffic diversion is indeed very beneficial because it can reduce congestion. For this reason, violations remaining to be found must be immediately followed up because what is agreed upon can be effective. “If there is no action yet, we must return to sit together and carry out evaluations related to prosecution in the field,” he hoped. Elton John to receive France’s top honour

PARIS - Rock legend Elton John is to be awarded France’s highest civilian honour this week as he passes through Paris as part of his farewell tour, the French presidency said.

The Legion d’Honneur award will be presented to the 72-year-old megastar by President Emmanuel Macron during a ceremony at the Elysee Palace in the French capital on Friday.

The singer, whose life was captured in the searingly honest “Rocketman” biopic that wowed critics at Cannes film festival last month, is not expected to perform although he was expected to use the occasion to promote his charity work.

Rival candidate highlighted fraud as omnipresent in democracy: witness

JAKARTA - Hairul Anas Suaidi, a witness of the legal team of Prabowo Subianto-Sandiaga Uno pair, claimed that a pre-election training held by the Joko Widodo (Jokowi)-Ma’ruf Amin campaign team indoctrinated that fraudulence was part of democracy.

“I was a legislative candidate of the Crescent Star Party (PBB), supporter of the no. 1 presidential candidate (Jokowi). I was later assigned to attend a training for (election) witnesses,” Suaidi revealed while addressing a judge panel of the Constitutional Court (MK) here on early Thursday.

During the training, one speaker gave a slideshow presentation of training materials that read fraudulence is part of democracy.

from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and nephew of former MK judge Mahfud MD, expressed shock and angst during the training.

Another material pertained to deploying officers to ensure that a certain candidate emerges victorious, he emphasized.

“Moreover, it showed pictures of people, prominent figures, local officials, and regional administrations, who had been directed to provide logistics support to a cer-

tain candidate. That had disturbed me, and finally, I decided to support (the candidate) no. 2 (Prabowo Subianto),” he remarked.

At the court hearing, Bambang Widjojanto, the legal team leader of the Subianto team, posed a question to Suaidi on whether the training covered materials to win millions of votes. The witness replied in the negative, saying no details were available to that end, but the training solely covered

election strategies and campaign means. For instance, to help the No. 1 candidate pair win, the No 2. candidate pair was identified as following an extreme ideology and having a radical outlook.

The MK has been holding hearings on June 14-28, 2019, over a legal suit filed by the Subianto-Uno pair, who have challenged the presidential election results announced by the General Election Commission (KPU) on May 22, 2019.

After the announcement that fueled a riot that led to eight deaths in Jakarta, Incumbent Jokowi declared victory, but Subianto re-

jected the results and decided to file a legal suit to challenge the KPU’s election results.
