‘The Catcher was a Spy’: Moe Berg’s double life as secret agent LOS ANGELES - Baseball pro Moe Berg wasn’t much of a star in the diamond but he was an MVP in the theater of war, risking his life behind enemy lines as an Allied spy.

Berg traded in his catcher’s mitt for a trench coat and a high-stakes mission to monitor -- and assassinate, if necessary -- the Nazis’ chief nuclear scientist.

His amazing story is dramatized in the stranger-than-fiction espionage thriller “The Catcher Was a Spy,” starring Paul Rudd, Paul Giamatti and a host of other big names, and opening in US theaters on Friday.

Number missing in Indonesia ferry disaster jumps to nearly 180: police

Nearly 180 passengers are missing after a ferry sank into the depths of a volcanic lake in Indonesia, police said Wednesday, almost tripling initial estimates. But the search-and-rescue agency cautioned it was still unclear how many people were aboard the vessel when it capsized.

The traditional wooden boat which sank Monday on Sumatra’s Lake Toba, a popular tourist destination, was thought to be operating illegally with no manifest or passenger tickets.

The situation has sparked confusion -- and different estimates from various agencies -- about the number of passengers on the over-

crowded boat. Indonesia’s disaster agency originally said some 80 people along with dozens of motorcycles were on the vessel when it overturned and sank.

It had a 43-passenger capacity, according to the transport ministry.

On Wednesday police said there were as many as 178 people missing, which if confirmed would

make it one of Indonesia’s worst maritime disasters.

Authorities have been relying on families who have reported that missing relatives may have been on the doomed vessel. “Many people got on the boat without a ticket so it’s unclear how many were on board,” Muhammad Syaugi, the head of the search and rescue

agency, told AFP. Later at a press conference, Syaugi added: “There are many people who have reported their relatives missing, but whether they were on the boat or not we don’t know.”

So far, four bodies have been found and another 18 people rescued, according to the local disaster agency, as the search turned to recovering the bodies of victims -- including those still trapped inside the sunken boat.

“We’ll be here until they find my brother’s body,” said Nurhayati,

among hundreds of grief-stricken people waiting by the shore for updates. “We just want to see his body and take him with us.”

Exposed to volcanic ashes, Tiga villagers catch cold

BANGLI —Volcanic ashes due to Mount Agung eruption in Karangasem a few days ago spread to the region of Bangli. Based on information, the distribution of ashes with small intensity was experienced by residents in the area of Tiga village. Aside from exposure to plants, the ashes also began to affect the disruption of respiratory health of local residents.

Headman of Tiga, Putu Merta Utama, when asked for his confirmation on Tuesday (Jun. 19) justified the condition. He revealed the volcanic ash rain with thin intensity has been experienced since a week ago. The last ash rain happened about two days ago. “The ash rain happening two days ago belonged to high intensity,” he said.

He mentioned the village areas affected by the exposure to volcanic ashes are the Tiga village to the north, such as Kayuambua and Malet. The exposure to ashes has already affected people’s crops. Flowers of chili and durians of local residents fell out due to such ash exposure. “All leaves of the plants turned white because of the ashes. The flowers of chili and durian fell out. In the past, similar ash rain caused durians to fall out,” he explained.

Besides, the exposure to volcanic ashes also claimed to have an impact on disruption of the people’s respiratory health. Merta added that many residents at his village are now starting to catch cold including himself.

Related to that condition, he admitted to immediately report the condition to public health center nearby. This will also be coordinated with the sub-district government to be further forwarded to the district government. (kmb40)

Art Market thronged by visitors on long holidays

GIANYAR —Filling the moment after the Eid al Fitr holidays, hundreds of domestic tourists thronged the Sukawati Art Market on Tuesday (Jun. 19).

In the arts market, they purchased clothes, paintings and various handicraft products. Surely, this condition has direct impact on the traffic density on the road sections around the market.

Hasan, a visitor from Yogyakarta, admitted that since last Sunday he has been vacationing in Bali. Before returning home, he deliberately took his family to hunt various handicraft products at Sukawati Art Market. “I take advantage of the holiday to travel with family and come here. At this

market, there is a lot of art products I like best,” he said.

Meanwhile, a merchant at Sukawati Art Market, Nyoman Lodri, said that since a week ago the visit to the market has increased compared to normal days. The visit was dominated by domestic tourists. “Well,

the visit is quite bustling. Maybe this happens due to Eid holidays,” she said.

To this woman having been selling at the Sukawati Art Market since the 1990s, the visit is not comparable to the time when the Sukawati Art Market on its heyday.

“If compared to the past time, it is not far comparable, but we are still grateful that there have been visitors shopping here.

Moreover, on usual days it is more tranquil,” she said.

According to this 59-year-old woman, the foreign tourist visit remains quiet. The tourist visit is dominantly directed to a number of souvenir shops opened in the area of Gianyar and Denpasar. “So, during normal days we cannot do selling because tourists have been directed to the souvenir markets,” she complained.

She hoped the government can provide solutions related to such condition, especially at the Sukawati Art Market as there are thousands of merchants relying on their life through this livelihood. “Although it cannot recover like the past heyday, we hope the conditions of the merchants can be a little better,” she said.

On the other hand, the density of tourist visits has direct impact on the traffic. As consequence, the parking of vehicles should be done along the road side in front of the Sukawati Police. Dead turtles and dolphins washed ashore

Some parents wary of cannabis-based medication for epilepsy

NEGARA — Within the past month, people often found a number of marine mammals and sea turtles getting stranded and died along the coast of Jembrana. On Monday morning (Jun. 18), a dead dolphin was found getting stranded on Tembles Beach, Penyaringan, Mendoyo. Previously, along the coastline of Jembrana from Gilimanuk to Pekutatan were also found a dozen of dead turtles. This condition draws the attention of animal observers, especially turtle observers.

Chief of the Kurma Asih turtle conservation of Perancak, Wayan Anom Astika Jaya, said the number of marine animals including turtles found dead and stranded on the beach draws some questions.

Moreover, within a month there are 11 turtles found dead. They are mostly female turtles. He did not know for sure why the turtles died.

He hoped that related institutions can do a research. “Probably this can happen due to damaged habitat, illegal poaching or being caught in fishing nets,” he explained.

Similar thing also applies to other marine animals found dead such as bottlenose dolphins recently. Based on information, the dolphin has the length of about 1.7 meters and weight of about 70 kilogram. When found by residents, the dolphin was already in decaying condition.

A hamlet coordinator of Tembles, Ngurah Sudarsana, said that villagers took the initiative to bury the dolphin carcasses. The dolphins were estimated to get stranded to the beach as being swept away by tidal waves. Similarly, he did know exactly why the dolphins died. (kmb26)

World Health Organization adds gaming disorder to disease classifications

Some U.S. experts said it will make little difference when it comes to helping people with the disorder, at least in the United States, but others said it would give legitimacy to a disorder that some people are reluctant to recognize.

The WHO added both online and offline gaming disorder to its latest draft of the International Classification of Diseases manual, called ICD-11.

This isn’t about kids spending a few hours in the basement playing “Fortnite” or “Call of Duty.” As with any medical disorder, the person affected must be seriously impaired.

“Gaming disorder is characterized by a pattern of persistent or recurrent gaming behavior (‘digital gaming’ or ‘video gam-

ing’), which may be online or offline,” the manual says.

The symptoms listed by WHO echo symptoms for other addictive or compulsive disorders.

They include: a lack of control over gaming; giving gaming precedence over other life interests and daily activities; and continuation or escalation of gaming despite negative consequences.

“The behavior pattern is of sufficient severity to result in significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational or other important areas of functioning,” WHO said.

“Having recognition from the WHO is significant,” said Dr. Petros Levounis, chair of psychiatry at the New Jersey Medical School at Rutgers University.

WHO’s ICD-11 is used widely outside the United States for classifying all disease. In the U.S., the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) is used to define mental illness. It mentions gaming disorder in its latest edition (DSM-5) but says more research is needed before listing it as a separate disorder.

“The ‘gamers’ play compulsively, to the exclusion of other interests, and their persistent and recurrent online activity results in clinically significant impairment or distress. People with this condition endanger their academic or job functioning because of the amount of time they spend playing,” it says. (net)

LONDON - A British pharmaceutical company is getting closer to a decision on whether the U.S government will approve the first prescription drug derived from the marijuana plant, but parents who for years have used cannabis to treat severe forms of epilepsy in their children are feeling more cautious than celebratory.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is expected to decide by the end of the month whether to approve GW Pharmaceuticals’ Epidiolex. It’s a purified form of cannabidiol — a component of cannabis that doesn’t get users high — to treat Dravet and LennoxGastaut syndromes in kids. Both forms of epilepsy are rare.

Cannabidiol’s effect on a variety of health conditions is frequently touted, but there is still little evidence to back up advocates’ personal experiences. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has long categorized cannabis as a Schedule I drug, a category with “no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse.” That strictly limits research on potential medical uses for cannabis or the chemicals in it, including cannabidiol, or CBD. But for years, parents desperate to find anything to help their children have turned to the marijuana-based products made legal by a growing number of states. She moved from Maine to Colorado in 2014 so she could legally get CBD for her now-5-year-old daughter, Addelyn, who was born with a brain malformation that causes seizures.

“My child was dying, and we needed to do something,” Patrick said.

As for the potential approval of a pharmaceutical based on CBD, she said fear is her first reaction.

“I want to make sure that her right to continue using what works for her is protected, first and foremost. That’s my job as her mom,” Patrick said.

Advocates like Patrick became particularly concerned when GW Pharmaceuticals’ U.S. commercial business, Greenwich Biosciences, began quietly lobbying to change states’ legal definition of marijuana, beginning in 2017 with proposals in Nebraska and South Dakota.

Some worried the company’s attempt to ensure its product could be legally prescribed and sold by pharmacies would have a side effect: curtailing medical marijuana programs already operating in more than two dozen states. (net)

Last year, we lost about 1,500 school children and this year it has returned to normal,” she explained.

The assets having been repaired in 2012 and 2014 cannot be capitalized to the asset owner. So, when there is improvement or rehabilitation, the addition of asset value must be added to the

repaired asset. Unfortunately, it has not been included in the asset report. “As planned, the improvement continues to be done but there is no certainty about the funding.

We will repair the road in front of the museum,” she said.

Just to be known, the subak museum located at Sanggulan Tabanan spreads across the area of 6.28 hectares. The land belongs to the asset of provincial government and the museum building (exhibition hall) is built by the Ministry of Public Works. Hundreds of students that initially made a fuss immediately focused on the stage in front of them. They did not guess if their schoolmates presented the ballet with such totality. From the beginning of entering the storyline, there was no awkwardness, nervous dialogue or expression that did not fit the storyline. Everything flowed as expected, like the incident that occurred at that time. “The preparation is less than a month,” said the Principal of the SMPN 2 Amlapura, I Wayan Gede Suastika.

The main characters, namely Jayaprana and Layonsari, appeared like a pair of lovers coming with full of romanticism. The player of Layonsari, Karen, was able to perform in totality for every scene.

There is no impression if she remains a child in the scene. Happiness, sadness, cries to suicide scene as a symbol of loyalty to Jayaprana could be played remarkably well.

Similarly, the player of Jayaprana, the king and queen, vice regent and bodyguards to other supporting players also performed their role well.

“Rather than getting married with you, I’d rather die,” is the end of Layonsari’s dialogue to the king who wanted to marry her as the queen, after his lover, Jayaprana, was told to have been killed by vice regent on the king’s instruction.

The end of the story of Jayaprana-Layonsari has become a legend until now. This story inspires on the loyalty of a relationship, responsibility in carrying out duties and harmonization in life. The most appealing to teenagers is the approach to dialogue because within this storyline is inserted a dialogue of teenage film having gone viral lately, namely the Dilan 1990. The dialogue is inserted in the scene when Jayaprana was assigned by the king to go into the jungle while carrying out the tasks with the vice regent before he was finally killed.

BANGUI - The Central African Republic (CAR) said on Tuesday that a diplomatic passport that tennis star Boris Becker claims entitles him to immunity in bankruptcy proceedings in Britain “is a fake”.

“The diplomatic passport that he has is a fake,” foreign ministry chief of staff Cherubin Mologbama told AFP. The document’s serial number corresponded to one of a batch of “new passports that were stolen in 2014,” he said.

In addition, the passport -- a copy of which has been seen by AFP, and bears the date of March 19, 2018 -- does not carry the signature or the stamp of the foreign minister, Charles Armel Doubane, Mologbama said.

Becker, responding through a German magazine, insisted that he held genuine diplomatic status.

“It’s the truth. It is a fact that I am, today, a diplomat” of the CAR, he said in a filmed interview with Top Magazin Frankfurt.

On Friday, lawyers for Germany’s three-time Wimbledon champion lodged a claim in the High Court in Britain saying that he had been appointed a sports attache

for the CAR to the European Union (EU) in April.

This, they argued, granted him immunity under the 1961 Vienna Diplomatic Convention on Diplomatic Relations from bankruptcy proceedings over failure to pay a long-standing debt.

“Becker’s job profile does not exist” in the CAR’s records, Mologbama said.

Furthermore, the passport says that Becker’s diplomatic function is “financial charge de mission,” a role that “has nothing to do with sporting questions,” he noted.

In April, the 50-year-old former tennis star had tweeted a picture of himself shaking hands with CAR President Faustin-Archange Touadera at a meeting in Brussels.

Becker shook up the tennis world at Wimbledon in 1985 when, as an unseeded player, he became the then youngest-ever male Grand Slam champion at the age of 17, defending the trophy the following year.

The German went on to enjoy a glittering career and amassed more than $25 million (21.65 million euros) in prize money. (afp)

BEIJING - Kim Jong Un declared North Korea’s unstinting “friendship, unity and cooperation” with Beijing during his third visit to China this year, in a show of loyalty to his main ally following a landmark summit with US President Donald Trump.

The two-day visit which ends Wednesday is designed to reassure Beijing that Pyongyang will not neglect its interests as Trump and the young autocrat move into uncharted diplomatic terrain.

The performance is part of a delicate balancing act for Kim, who analysts say is seeking to play US and Chinese interests off each other while maintaining good relations with Beijing, his economic patron and diplomatic protector.

China and the US both hope to see the Korean peninsula free of nuclear weapons, but Beijing is concerned Washington and Pyongyang might move closer at its expense, a possibility that China sees as threatening to its economic and security interests in the region.

While China was not present at the June 12 summit in Singapore, it lent Kim a plane to travel to the city-state, a clear sign that it

remains an influential force in the diplomatic shuffle.

The Cold War-era allies, which fought side-by-side against USled UN forces and South Korea in the 1950-1953 Korean War, have sought to repair ties strained

by Pyongyang’s nuclear tests and Beijing’s support of subsequent UN sanctions.

Kim chose Beijing for his first official foreign trip in March and met Xi again in May in the northeastern port city of Dalian.

Kim’s agenda for Wednesday was not made public. An AFP journalist saw a motorcade leaving the Diaoyutai guest house for foreign dignitaries in Beijing, but it was unclear where it was headed.

During his meeting with Xi Tuesday, Kim thanked China for “positive and sincere support and good help for the successful” summit with Trump, according to North Korea’s official KCNA news agency.

The North Korean leader, who was greeted by a military honour guard and cheering children at the Great Hall of the People Tuesday, said he valued the “recently strengthened strategic cooperation” between the two countries.

“He expressed the determination and will to further develop the closer relations of friendship, unity and cooperation between the two parties and the two peoples of the DPRK and China,” KCNA said.

Kim also invoked the “prospect for the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula” following his meeting with Trump.

For his part, Xi told Kim that China “speaks highly” of his summit with Trump and he urged Washington and Pyongyang to implement their agreement struck in Singapore.

The Chinese leader vowed that Beijing would continue to play a “constructive role” in the nuclear diplomacy. (afp)

“Markets are faring much better as investors’ emotions have tempered, but in general, markets remain in wait-and-see mode,” said Stephen Innes, head of Asia-Pacific trading at OANDA. “Clarity is power but given the lack thereof, it’s a struggle to get back in the saddle as a sense of once bitten, twice shy continues to permeate.

“The spoils of trade war have attracted bargain-hunting but completely trusting the markets in the aftermath of yesterday’s meltdown is bordering on too soon, too quick as sentiment remains very apprehensive.”

Rakuten Securities Australia chief operating officer Nick Twidale added: “Markets are preparing for further downside whilst hoping that the latest salvos from the Trump administration prove to be another ‘negotiating’ tactic.”(afp)

Asian markets mostly up but trade war fears keep dealers on edge

Asian equities rose Wednesday on bargain-buying after the previous day’s battering, but investors remain anxious as the threat of a China-US trade war hangs over markets. Shanghai and Hong Kong bore the brunt of the sell-off Tuesday after Beijing warned it would retaliate in kind to Donald Trump’s threat of tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of Chinese goods, amounting to much of its exports to the US. The standoff follows weeks of fruitless talks between the world’s two biggest economies, with the White House accusing China of a string of unfair practices including cyber-theft and forced technology transfers that are hurting American jobs and companies.

Tuesday’s developments surprised many traders who had characterised Trump’s protectionist rhetoric as part of a strategy to get a better deal from China.

Trump senior economic aide Peter Navarro continued the forceful language Tuesday by saying China had more to lose from a trade war because it shipped more to the US. He also maintained the administration was acting “to defend the crown jewels of American technology from China’s aggressive behaviour”.

Navarro said the White House was open to talks but warned: “The fundamental reality is talk is cheap.

Delay is expensive.”

Customers of the US tech giant had complained to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) after an operating system update disabled their devices in a global issue known as “error 53”.

The users were told by Apple that they were not eligible for a remedy if the iPhone or iPad had been repaired by another company.

The ACCC took Apple to the Federal Court last year over allegedly false or misleading representations to customers with faulty iPhones and iPads about their rights under the law.

“If a product is faulty, cus-

tomers are legally entitled to a repair or a replacement under the Australian Consumer Law, and sometimes even a refund,” ACCC Commissioner Sarah Court said in a statement.

“The court declared the mere fact that an iPhone or iPad had been repaired by someone other than Apple did not, and could not, result in the consumer guarantees ceasing to apply, or the consumer’s right to a remedy being extinguished.”

Apple admitted misleading at least 275 Australian customers over the issue between February 2015 to February 2016 on its US website, by its Australian store

staff and on its customer service phone calls.

The consumer watchdog said Apple had also committed to providing new devices as replacements, after allegations that the company was giving customers refurbished goods instead after a device suffered a major failure.

Apple said Tuesday that it had “very productive conversations with the ACCC” over the issue and vowed to offer its Australian users “excellent service”.

It has previously described the error as appearing “when a device fails a security test” and released an operating system update to fix the issue. (afp)

Men Brayut Symbol of the strength of Balinese Women

The story of Men Brayut tells of the extraordinary strength of character of a Balinese woman by this name. This story has become part of Balinese folklore and is often told as a bedtime story. It is a symbolic tale of how strong Balinese women are in carrying out the tasks of their daily lives. Having a strong work ethic, patience, honesty, care, and a sense of camaraderie and ability to remain steadfast in facing problems are qualities that are highlighted in this ancient tale.

Several villages in Bali, have shrines and temple reliefs devoted to Men Brayut, where people come to pray. Pura Dalem in Belang Samu Village, Kusamba and Goa Gajah are two examples of sites where, on specific days people come to pay honour to Men Brayut. Many people believe that by doing so they will be blessed with children.

Men Brayut was a housewife who came from a poor family and who had 18 children. To fulfill the needs of her big family, she had to work very hard and even had to do ‘men’s work’. She was able to keep peace and harmony within her big family and with others in her community, so she is considered a very good example to follow.

According to Dr. Drs. I Wayan Wastawa, MA, a lecturer at The Denpasar Hindu Dharma Institute (IHDN), Men Brayut not only had a strong work ethic but was also spiritually diligent, praying every

day. She was also very generous, sharing whatever she had and was always grateful. “Men Brayut is a symbol of the strength of Balinese women in protecting the harmony of their family”, he added.

By giving equal love to all her children, they all become successful people. Many people are puzzled by this and ask: “how is it possible for a women with so many children and with so little money accomplish this?”. Many people therefore want to learn from Men Brayut. “After all, once she accomplished all her tasks, she entered the next phase of life known as Wanaprasta in which she practiced yoga semadi”, explained Wastawa.

Men Brayut is a symbol of prosperity and a symbol of the motherland as described by how her children always stayed closed to her and even grasped her hair or legs to survive. She was able to apply the principle of equality to her

family by giving the same heritage to each of her child. “Men Brayut is a symbol of a great leader who acts with equally towards the people”, said Dr. Wastawa.

He also explained that these days, Balinese women should follow the example of Men Brayut’s work ethic. Balinese woman should not be too strict about only doing specialized woman’s work. According to Dr. Wastawa, there are many things that women can do: “there are many jobs that can be done by woman such as farming, construction, being security officers and high ranking managers.

These jobs can be done by both men and women”, he stated. Balinese woman have a strong spirit for studying so job opportunities are wide open to them. “Nowadays, there is saying that ‘woman should not just rely on their husbands.

Although, they seemed to mutually reciprocate, between the two camps (people in the north and south) did not keep any revenge. Their throw was not focused on particular person, but to the air above the opposite camp. Although this looked like a war, they cheered each other due to excitement.

It is the atmosphere of the Aci Tabuh Rah Pengangon ritual or often known as the Siat Tipat Bantal at Kapal customary village, Mengwi, Badung district, Thursday (Oct. 5). Hundreds of Kapal customary villagers were involved in the Aci Tabuh Rah Pengangon. In addition to the community, this unique tradition was also attended by the Regional Secretary of Badung district, Wayan Adi Arnawa.

The ritual was followed by all Kapal customary villagers. All the villagers were then divided into two camps, namely the northern camp and southern camp. At first, the two camps held a ceremony in the temple and were then resumed with worship at the outermost courtyard of the Desa/Puseh temple of Kapal.

Thousands of tipat and bantal were prepared by the temple apparatus.

After dividing them, they were thrown each other like a war accompanied with bleganjur gamelan music.

Chief of Kapal customary village, Ketut Sudarsana, said that Aci Tabuh Rah Pengangon formerly known as perang tipat (tipat war) is an annual ritual having been carried out for generations at Kapal customary village. This tradition is then preserved, so that it is always carried out by the Kapal customary village. “This activity aims to invoke prosperity for all customary villagers of Kapal,” he said.

Aci Tabuh Rah Pengangon has

the meaning of offerings or an expression of gratitude before God in his manifestation as Lord Shiva.

Aci means ‘offering,’ Tabuh means ‘echoing,’ Rah means ‘power’ and Pengangon is another name of Lord Shiva. “Mutual throw of tipat and bantal is aimed to bring together the symbol of pradhana (female) and purusha (male), resulting in fertility,” he explained.

Ketut Sudarsana asserted that Aci Tabuh Rah Pengangon is held by customary village because all the villages participated to enjoy the welfare. It is bringing together the tipat as symbol of ocean, pradhana (female) and bantal as symbol of mountain, purusha (male).

Uniting the ocean and mountain is believed to be able to create life.

“Two different things will present a life that can produce a good life,” he said.

Tipat and bantal thrown are not to target the opponent’s body but to make them both merge in the air and then fall to the ground.

This symbolizes the rendezvous of purusha and pradhana which then produces a seed of life. Remnants of the scattered tipat and bantal are the collected again. Those remaining intact are distributed back to residents for consumption, while the infeasible ones are distributed to residents to be scattered in paddy fields and used as animal feed. It is meant to invoke a good life seed for residents, animals and plants.

Sudarsana explained the tradition was started to be implemented in 1339. It marked the arrival of prime minister of Singasari dynasty in Bali, namely Ki Kebo Waruya.

He received a mandate from the Balinese King named Asta Sura Ratna Bumi Banten to renovate the Purusada Temple at Kapal village.

Italy’s Osteria Francescana crowned world’s best restaurant again

BILBAO - Italy’s Osteria Francescana was crowned the world’s best restaurant for the second time on Tuesday at an awards ceremony put on by British trade magazine Restaurant, beating out top eateries in Spain and France.

Run by chef Massimo Bottura, the restaurant in Modena, Italy pipped last year’s winner, New York’s “Eleven Madison Park,” in the World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards, after first taking the honour in 2016. It is the only Italian establishment to have won the annual accolade.

“This is amazing, this is something we built all together,” Bottura told the awards ceremony held in Bilbao in Spain’s northern Basque Country, famous for its avant-garde haute cuisine.

“I am going to use this spotlight to show that chefs in 2018 are much more than the sum of their recipes.” The top restaurants list’s organisers praised “Bottura’s contemporary cuisine, which challenges and reinvents Italian culinary tradition while make use of the finest produce from the Emilia-Romagna region.”

His father wanted him to become a lawyer but when he was 23-years-old Bottura, who was famous for rustling up culinary delights for his friends, dropped his law studies to open a Trattoria in Campazzo, in the countryside around Modena in the Po River Valley.

On his days off, he would study with French chef Georges Cogny, who had a restaurant two hours away. “He said to me: ‘always follow your palate, because you have a great palate which will make Modena known around the world’,” Bottura said during an interview with AFP in 2016. He opened Osteria Francescana in 1995 after spending time in New York and Monaco. (afp)

“I’m so disappointed -- there’s no progress here. Please bring back my son.” Authorities have deployed divers and underwater vehicles, along with about 400 personnel, to search the enormous lake in an operation expected to last at least a week.

Lake Toba, popular with international and domestic tourists, fills the crater of a supervolcano that erupted tens of thousands of years ago. It is one of the world’s deepest lakes and extends some 1,145 square kilometres (440 square miles).

“We are looking to search as deep as 400 metres but we haven’t found anything yet because the area is very large,” said the rescue agency’s Syaugi.

bloated body of a woman who had washed ashore. It was not clear if any foreigners were on board the ferry or what caused the disaster.

Survivor accounts said the boat began shaking as it struggled to navigate strong winds and high waves about halfway into the 40-minute trip from an island in the middle of the lake to shore.

Muslim-majority Indonesia has been celebrating the Islamic festival of Eid since Friday and millions go on holiday during the festivities, with Lake Toba a key destination. The deadly disaster came just days after more than a dozen people were killed in an unrelated maritime accident that underscored Indonesia’s woeful boat safety record.

Traditional boats -- like the one in the Lake Toba disaster -- are rarely equipped with enough life preservers and their condition can be dire.

Enforcement of safety standards also tends to be weak. In 2015 a ferry sank off the coast of the island of Sulawesi, leaving 78 dead or missing.

In the slums of Jakarta, Indonesia’s poor are getting a taste of how the other half live thanks to a new programme that aims to take a bite out of its mammoth food-waste problem. Called a Blessing to Share, the service supplies leftover wedding dishes to some of the poorest members of society in the sprawling capital.

US withdraws from ‘cesspool’ UN rights body

WASHINGTON - The United States withdrew from the United Nations Human Rights Council on Tuesday, condemning the “hypocrisy” of its members and its alleged “unrelenting bias” against Israel.

The US ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, came to Washington to announce the decision alongside President Donald Trump’s top diplomat, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Both insisted the United States would remain a leading champion of human rights but, for many, the decision will reflect Trump’s general hostility to the world body and to multilateral diplomacy in general.

The announcement came after the top UN human rights official criticized Washington for separating migrant children from their parents who are seeking asylum after crossing into the country from Mexico.

But Haley and Pompeo stressed the decision had been made after a long year of efforts to shame the council into reform and to remove member states that themselves commit abuses.

“These reforms were needed in order to make the council a serious advocate for human rights,” Haley said.

“For too long, the Human Rights Council has been a protector of human rights abusers, and a cesspool of political bias. Regrettably, it is now clear that our call for reform was not heeded.”

The Geneva-based body was established in 2006 to promote and protect human rights worldwide, but its pronouncements and reports have often clashed with US priorities.

In particular, the council’s focus on Israeli behavior

towards Palestinians in the territory it occupies on the West Bank and in Gaza has infuriated Washington.

But, as Haley stressed, Washington also believes it comes up short on criticizing even flagrant abuses by US opponents like Venezuela and Cuba.

“Countries have colluded with each other to undermine the current method of selecting members,” Pompeo said.

“And the council’s continued and well-documented bias against Israel is unconscionable,” he said.

“Since its creation, the council has adopted more resolutions condemning Israel than against the rest of the world combined.”

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the US move, branding the council “a biased, hostile, anti-Israel organization that has betrayed its mission of protecting human rights.”

Haley, who issued a warning a year ago that Washington would make good on its threat to leave the council if reforms were not carried through, used even starker language.

“We take this step because our commitment does not allow us to remain a part of a hypocritical and self-serving organization that makes a mockery of human rights,” she said. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres regretted the US decision, adding: “The UN’s human rights architecture plays a very important role in the promotion and protection of human rights worldwide.”

On Monday, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein -- a Jordanian -- had rebuked Trump over the US practice of splitting up migrant families detained on the Mexican border.

“The thought that any state would seek to deter parents by inflicting such abuse on children is unconscionable,” he said. (afp)

Even as it struggles with poverty and malnutrition, the Southeast Asian nation bins more edible food per person than any other country except Saudi Arabia, according to an Economist Intelligence Unit survey last year.

Indonesia’s 260 million citizens each throw out an average of almost 300 kilograms (660 pounds) of food annually, ahead of the United States in third spot, the survey said. The country’s food waste problem can be partly chalked up to local hospitality, which calls for ample helpings at all celebrations.

Hosts often err on the side of abundance, and many hungry revellers’ eyes are bigger than their stomachs -- meaning lots of uneaten food.

Globally, about 30 percent of food produced every year is tossed out or spoiled -- about 1.3 billion tonnes -- which translates into some $1 trillion in economic costs, ac-

cording to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Association. That’s where a Blessing To Share comes in.

“There are lots of weddings in Indonesia and lots of extra food,” said programme founder Astrid Paramita.

Traffic accidents during Lebaran drop 30 percent

JAKARTA - The number of traffic accidents usually increases sharply during Eid Al-Ftri or Lebaran season, as millions of people heading to their hometowns to celebrate Eid festivities pack the roads.

However, the government has made its best to reduce the traffic accidents during this year`s Lebaran season through the launch of `Operation Ketupat 2018` by the Indonesian National Police (Polri).

The number of accidents during the Ketupat Operation 2018, from Wednesday (June 7) (H-8) to Monday (June 18) (H + 3), was 1,478 cases , or 30 percent, down compared to the same period in 2017.

“From H-8 to H + 3 Lebaran, the number of traffic accidents was recorded at 1,478 incidents, down 30 percent compared to that during the operation `Ramadniya Ops` in the previous year, which reached 2,110 incidents,” Head of the Public Information Bureau of the National Police Brigadier General

Mohammad Iqbal stated in a short message to ANTARA on Tuesday.

The victims of the accidents during the Operation Ketupat 2018 until H + 3 Lebaran also decreased compared to the death toll in `Ops Ramadniya 2017` until the day of Lebaran.

Iqbal remarked that the number of deaths in the `Ops Ketupat 2018` up to H + 3 Lebaran was recorded at 333 people, or down 59 percent, compared to the same period in 2017, which was 815 people.

He added that on H + 3 Lebaran, there was an increase in the return flow travelers through the JakartaCikampek toll road by 60 percent from West Java and Central Java.

The Ketupat 2018 operation lasted for 18 days from June 7 to June 24, 2018. There were 177 thousand personnel, consisting of police and military (TNI) personnel, public order police (Satpol PP), firefighters, and other related agencies, which were alerted during the operation.

Police also prepared as many as 3,097 security posts throughout Indonesia during the implementation of Operation Ketupat 2018.

Before Lebaran, namely from June 7 to June 15, police recorded 1,154 Ramadan related traffic accidents all over the country. It was smaller 17 percent from 1,623 accidents the same period last year.

There were 242 dead victims in the accidents or 44 percent smaller than 616 in the same period in 2017, Police spokesman Ins. Gen. Setyo Wasisto said last Saturday.

The operation of new toll roads contributed partly to the decline in traffic accidents and death toll.

Most of the accidents involved motorcyclists, Setyo said.

“Up to H-3, there were 771 traffic accidents, down 19 percent compared to previous year`s `Operation Ramadniya,` which reached 1,117 incidents,” Brigadier General

Mohammad Iqbal, spokesman of the National Police Headquarters, stated in Jakarta last Wednesday.

Overall, there has been a reduction in the accidents recorded during the `Operation Ketupat 2018` until H-3 compared to Operation Ramadniya 2017, with the death toll reaching 163, or 41 percent. According to him, traffic accidents are dominated by driver fatigue factors.

He added that on H-3, there was an increase in the flow of people moving to West Java, Central Java, and East Java by 276 percent. “This is because it was a holiday for private firm employees,” he stated.

He noted that on H-3, the vehicle flowing through the Merak Toll Road Gate was 25,702, or 341 percent higher than the normal day; vehicles through GT (toll gate) Ciawi was 22,199 vehicles, or up 8 percent; vehicles flowing through GT Cileunyi was 28,554, or up 79 percent; and via GT Cikarang Utama was 67,096, or up 675 percent.(ant)

Murray was beaten 2-6, 7-6 (7/4), 7-5 by Australia’s Nick Kyrgios in the Queen’s Club first round on Tuesday as the former world number one returned from the hip injury that required surgery in January and wiped out the second half of last season.

The 31-year-old Scot, back on court for the first time since a Wimbledon quarter-final defeat against Sam Querrey 342 days ago, had low expectations of his return after several aborted comeback attempts.

Although the two-time Wimbledon champion, whose ranking has plummeted to 156, showed signs of rust in his shot-making and movement at times, he was generally encouraged by his gutsy display.

However, Murray admitted to feeling stiffness in his back during the match and his foot afterwards, prompting him to make it clear he is still unsure if his body can hold up to the demands of best-of-five-set ties at Wimbledon.

He plans to see how he recovers over the next 48 hours before deciding whether to play at the All England Club, where he has twice won the Wimbledon title.

“How I feel tomorrow is relevant. If I wake up and don’t feel good then that’s not the best sign for best of five tennis,” Murray said.

“If it had been a five setter today it would have been another hour and a half of tennis.

That would have been difficult for me.

“I won’t rule anything out just now. I won’t rule out playing Eastbourne and not playing Wimbledon.

“I wouldn’t rule out not playing a tournament next week and trying to get matches like in an exhibition tournament, as well, to get ready for Wimbledon.

“I’ll kind of need to wait and see what happens the next few days and chat with my team about that, because I don’t know exactly what’s best for me just now.”

“I was quite emotional after my practice today. It’s been such a long time. People have been saying it’s great to see you back,” he said.

World Cup shock and awe: Russia aren’t that bad

The host nation defied critics and confounded expectations by easing past Egypt 3-1 on Tuesday, all but assuring their place in the last 16 of a World Cup for the first time since the Soviet era.

Murray was beaten 2-6, 7-6 (7/4), 7-5 by Australia’s Nick Kyrgios in the Queen’s Club first round on Tuesday as the former world number one returned from the hip injury that required surgery in January and wiped out the second half of last season.

The 31-year-old Scot, back on court for the first time since a Wimbledon quarter-final defeat against Sam Querrey 342 days ago, had low expectations of his return after several aborted comeback attempts.

Although the two-time Wimbledon champion, whose ranking has plummeted to 156, showed signs of rust in his shot-making and movement at times, he was generally encouraged by his gutsy display.

However, Murray admitted to feeling stiffness in his back during the match and his foot afterwards, prompting him to make it clear he is still unsure if his body can hold up to the demands of best-of-five-set ties at Wimbledon.

“I’ll kind of need to wait and see what happens the next few days and chat with my team about that, because I don’t know exactly what’s best for me just now.”

Murray revealed he found it difficult to keep his emotions in check after such a long time on the sidelines.

“I was quite emotional after my practice today. It’s been such a long time. People have been saying it’s great to see you back,” he said.

Italy’s Osteria Francescana crowned world’s best restaurant again

BILBAO - Italy’s Osteria Francescana was crowned the world’s best restaurant for the second time on Tuesday at an awards ceremony put on by British trade magazine Restaurant, beating out top eateries in Spain and France.

Run by chef Massimo Bottura, the restaurant in Modena, Italy pipped last year’s winner, New York’s “Eleven Madison Park,” in the World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards, after first taking the honour in 2016. It is the only Italian establishment to have won the annual accolade.

“This is amazing, this is something we built all together,” Bottura told the awards ceremony held in Bilbao in Spain’s northern Basque Country, famous for its avant-garde haute cuisine.

“I am going to use this spotlight to show that chefs in 2018 are much more than the sum of their recipes.” The top restaurants list’s organisers praised “Bottura’s contemporary cuisine, which challenges and reinvents Italian culinary tradition while make use of the finest produce from the Emilia-Romagna region.”

His father wanted him to become a lawyer but when he was 23-years-old Bottura, who was famous for rustling up culinary delights for his friends, dropped his law studies to open a Trattoria in Campazzo, in the countryside around Modena in the Po River Valley.

On his days off, he would study with French chef Georges Cogny, who had a restaurant two hours away. “He said to me: ‘always follow your palate, because you have a great palate which will make Modena known around the world’,” Bottura said during an interview with AFP in 2016. “We are looking to search as deep as 400 metres but we haven’t found anything yet because the area is very large,” said the rescue agency’s Syaugi.

Survivor accounts said the boat began shaking as it struggled to navigate strong winds and high waves about halfway into the 40-minute trip from an island in the middle of the lake to shore.

Muslim-majority Indonesia has been celebrating the Islamic festival of Eid since Friday and millions go on holiday during the festivities, with Lake Toba a key destination. The deadly disaster came just days after more than a dozen people were killed in an unrelated maritime accident that underscored Indonesia’s woeful boat safety record.

Traditional boats -- like the one in the Lake Toba disaster -- are rarely equipped with enough life preservers and their condition can be dire.

Enforcement of safety standards also tends to be weak. In 2015 a ferry sank off the coast of the island of Sulawesi, leaving 78 dead or missing.

In the slums of Jakarta, Indonesia’s poor are getting a taste of how the other half live thanks to a new programme that aims to take a bite out of its mammoth food-waste problem. Called a Blessing to Share, the service supplies leftover wedding dishes to some of the poorest members of society in the sprawling capital.

US withdraws from ‘cesspool’ UN rights body

WASHINGTON - The United States withdrew from the United Nations Human Rights Council on Tuesday, condemning the “hypocrisy” of its members and its alleged “unrelenting bias” against Israel.

The US ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, came to Washington to announce the decision alongside President Donald Trump’s top diplomat, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Both insisted the United States would remain a leading champion of human rights but, for many, the decision will reflect Trump’s general hostility to the world body and to multilateral diplomacy in general.

The announcement came after the top UN human rights official criticized Washington for separating migrant children from their parents who are seeking asylum after crossing into the country from Mexico.

But Haley and Pompeo stressed the decision had been made after a long year of efforts to shame the council into reform and to remove member states that themselves commit abuses.

“These reforms were needed in order to make the council a serious advocate for human rights,” Haley said.

“For too long, the Human Rights Council has been a protector of human rights abusers, and a cesspool of political bias. Regrettably, it is now clear that our call for reform was not heeded.”

The Geneva-based body was established in 2006 to promote and protect human rights worldwide, but its pronouncements and reports have often clashed with US priorities.

In particular, the council’s focus on Israeli behavior

towards Palestinians in the territory it occupies on the West Bank and in Gaza has infuriated Washington.

But, as Haley stressed, Washington also believes it comes up short on criticizing even flagrant abuses by US opponents like Venezuela and Cuba.

“Countries have colluded with each other to undermine the current method of selecting members,” Pompeo said.

“And the council’s continued and well-documented bias against Israel is unconscionable,” he said.

“Since its creation, the council has adopted more resolutions condemning Israel than against the rest of the world combined.”

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the US move, branding the council “a biased, hostile, anti-Israel organization that has betrayed its mission of protecting human rights.”

Haley, who issued a warning a year ago that Washington would make good on its threat to leave the council if reforms were not carried through, used even starker language.

“We take this step because our commitment does not allow us to remain a part of a hypocritical and self-serving organization that makes a mockery of human rights,” she said. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres regretted the US decision, adding: “The UN’s human rights architecture plays a very important role in the promotion and protection of human rights worldwide.”

On Monday, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein -- a Jordanian -- had rebuked Trump over the US practice of splitting up migrant families detained on the Mexican border.

“The thought that any state would seek to deter parents by inflicting such abuse on children is unconscionable,” he said. (afp)

Even as it struggles with poverty and malnutrition, the Southeast Asian nation bins more edible food per person than any other country except Saudi Arabia, according to an Economist Intelligence Unit survey last year.

Indonesia’s 260 million citizens each throw out an average of almost 300 kilograms (660 pounds) of food annually, ahead of the United States in third spot, the survey said. The country’s food waste problem can be partly chalked up to local hospitality, which calls for ample helpings at all celebrations.

Hosts often err on the side of abundance, and many hungry revellers’ eyes are bigger than their stomachs -- meaning lots of uneaten food.

Globally, about 30 percent of food produced every year is tossed out or spoiled -- about 1.3 billion tonnes -- which translates into some $1 trillion in economic costs, ac-

cording to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Association. That’s where a Blessing To Share comes in.

“There are lots of weddings in Indonesia and lots of extra food,” said programme founder Astrid Paramita.

“And there are lots of hungry people unfortunately, so this programme is trying to close that gap between the rich and needy.” So far the programme is fairly limited, but Parmita has big plans and hopes to expand to other cities and also start sourcing edibles from company meetings and conferences.

Since starting in November, about 50 weddings have participated in the programme with about 1.6 tons of food collected for distribution through a local food bank.

For 60-year-old scavenger Efendi, getting a meal from one couple’s lavish nuptials across town was a welcome surprise. “I didn’t expect this -- suddenly I’m getting free food,” he said.(afp)

Traffic accidents during Lebaran drop 30 percent

JAKARTA - The number of traffic accidents usually increases sharply during Eid Al-Ftri or Lebaran season, as millions of people heading to their hometowns to celebrate Eid festivities pack the roads.

However, the government has made its best to reduce the traffic accidents during this year`s Lebaran season through the launch of `Operation Ketupat 2018` by the Indonesian National Police (Polri).

The number of accidents during the Ketupat Operation 2018, from Wednesday (June 7) (H-8) to Monday (June 18) (H + 3), was 1,478 cases , or 30 percent, down compared to the same period in 2017.

“From H-8 to H + 3 Lebaran, the number of traffic accidents was recorded at 1,478 incidents, down 30 percent compared to that during the operation `Ramadniya Ops` in the previous year, which reached 2,110 incidents,” Head of the Public Information Bureau of the National Police Brigadier General

Mohammad Iqbal stated in a short message to ANTARA on Tuesday.

The victims of the accidents during the Operation Ketupat 2018 until H + 3 Lebaran also decreased compared to the death toll in `Ops Ramadniya 2017` until the day of Lebaran.

Iqbal remarked that the number of deaths in the `Ops Ketupat 2018` up to H + 3 Lebaran was recorded at 333 people, or down 59 percent, compared to the same period in 2017, which was 815 people.

He added that on H + 3 Lebaran, there was an increase in the return flow travelers through the JakartaCikampek toll road by 60 percent from West Java and Central Java.

The Ketupat 2018 operation lasted for 18 days from June 7 to June 24, 2018. There were 177 thousand personnel, consisting of police and military (TNI) personnel, public order police (Satpol PP), firefighters, and other related agencies, which were alerted during the operation.

Police also prepared as many as 3,097 security posts throughout Indonesia during the implementation of Operation Ketupat 2018.

Before Lebaran, namely from June 7 to June 15, police recorded 1,154 Ramadan related traffic accidents all over the country. It was smaller 17 percent from 1,623 accidents the same period last year.

There were 242 dead victims in the accidents or 44 percent smaller than 616 in the same period in 2017, Police spokesman Ins. Gen. Setyo Wasisto said last Saturday.

The operation of new toll roads contributed partly to the decline in traffic accidents and death toll.

Most of the accidents involved motorcyclists, Setyo said.

“Up to H-3, there were 771 traffic accidents, down 19 percent compared to previous year`s `Operation Ramadniya,` which reached 1,117 incidents,” Brigadier General

Mohammad Iqbal, spokesman of the National Police Headquarters, stated in Jakarta last Wednesday.

Overall, there has been a reduction in the accidents recorded during the `Operation Ketupat 2018` until H-3 compared to Operation Ramadniya 2017, with the death toll reaching 163, or 41 percent. According to him, traffic accidents are dominated by driver fatigue factors.

He added that on H-3, there was an increase in the flow of people moving to West Java, Central Java, and East Java by 276 percent. “This is because it was a holiday for private firm employees,” he stated.

He noted that on H-3, the vehicle flowing through the Merak Toll Road Gate was 25,702, or 341 percent higher than the normal day; vehicles through GT (toll gate) Ciawi was 22,199 vehicles, or up 8 percent; vehicles flowing through GT Cileunyi was 28,554, or up 79 percent; and via GT Cikarang Utama was 67,096, or up 675 percent.(ant)

Asian equities rose Wednesday on bargain-buying after the previous day’s battering, but investors remain anxious as the threat of a China-US trade war hangs over markets. Shanghai and Hong Kong bore the brunt of the sell-off Tuesday after Beijing warned it would retaliate in kind to Donald Trump’s threat of tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of Chinese goods, amounting to much of its exports to the US. The standoff follows weeks of fruitless talks between the world’s two biggest economies, with the White House accusing China of a string of unfair practices including cyber-theft and forced technology transfers that are hurting American jobs and companies.

Tuesday’s developments surprised many traders who had characterised Trump’s protectionist rhetoric as part of a strategy to get a better deal from China.

Trump senior economic aide Peter Navarro continued the forceful language Tuesday by saying China had more to lose from a trade war because it shipped more to the US. He also maintained the administration was acting “to defend the crown jewels of American technology from China’s aggressive behaviour”.

Navarro said the White House was open to talks but warned: “The fundamental reality is talk is cheap.

Delay is expensive.”

Customers of the US tech giant had complained to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) after an operating system update disabled their devices in a global issue known as “error 53”.

The users were told by Apple that they were not eligible for a remedy if the iPhone or iPad had been repaired by another company.

The ACCC took Apple to the Federal Court last year over allegedly false or misleading representations to customers with faulty iPhones and iPads about their rights under the law.

“If a product is faulty, cus-

tomers are legally entitled to a repair or a replacement under the Australian Consumer Law, and sometimes even a refund,” ACCC Commissioner Sarah Court said in a statement.

“The court declared the mere fact that an iPhone or iPad had been repaired by someone other than Apple did not, and could not, result in the consumer guarantees ceasing to apply, or the consumer’s right to a remedy being extinguished.”

Apple admitted misleading at least 275 Australian customers over the issue between February 2015 to February 2016 on its US website, by its Australian store

staff and on its customer service phone calls.

The consumer watchdog said Apple had also committed to providing new devices as replacements, after allegations that the company was giving customers refurbished goods instead after a device suffered a major failure.

Apple said Tuesday that it had “very productive conversations with the ACCC” over the issue and vowed to offer its Australian users “excellent service”.

It has previously described the error as appearing “when a device fails a security test” and released an operating system update to fix the issue. (afp)

The story of Men Brayut tells of the extraordinary strength of character of a Balinese woman by this name. This story has become part of Balinese folklore and is often told as a bedtime story. It is a symbolic tale of how strong Balinese women are in carrying out the tasks of their daily lives. Having a strong work ethic, patience, honesty, care, and a sense of camaraderie and ability to remain steadfast in facing problems are qualities that are highlighted in this ancient tale.

Several villages in Bali, have shrines and temple reliefs devoted to Men Brayut, where people come to pray. Pura Dalem in Belang Samu Village, Kusamba and Goa Gajah are two examples of sites where, on specific days people come to pay honour to Men Brayut. Many people believe that by doing so they will be blessed with children.

Men Brayut was a housewife who came from a poor family and who had 18 children. To fulfill the needs of her big family, she had to work very hard and even had to do ‘men’s work’. She was able to keep peace and harmony within her big family and with others in her community, so she is considered a very good example to follow.

According to Dr. Drs. I Wayan Wastawa, MA, a lecturer at The Denpasar Hindu Dharma Institute (IHDN), Men Brayut not only had a strong work ethic but was also spiritually diligent, praying every

day. She was also very generous, sharing whatever she had and was always grateful. “Men Brayut is a symbol of the strength of Balinese women in protecting the harmony of their family”, he added.

By giving equal love to all her children, they all become successful people. Many people are puzzled by this and ask: “how is it possible for a women with so many children and with so little money accomplish this?”. Many people therefore want to learn from Men Brayut. “After all, once she accomplished all her tasks, she entered the next phase of life known as Wanaprasta in which she practiced yoga semadi”, explained Wastawa.

Men Brayut is a symbol of prosperity and a symbol of the motherland as described by how her children always stayed closed to her and even grasped her hair or legs to survive. She was able to apply the principle of equality to her

family by giving the same heritage to each of her child. “Men Brayut is a symbol of a great leader who acts with equally towards the people”, said Dr. Wastawa.

He also explained that these days, Balinese women should follow the example of Men Brayut’s work ethic. Balinese woman should not be too strict about only doing specialized woman’s work. According to Dr. Wastawa, there are many things that women can do: “there are many jobs that can be done by woman such as farming, construction, being security officers and high ranking managers.

These jobs can be done by both men and women”, he stated. Balinese woman have a strong spirit for studying so job opportunities are wide open to them. “Nowadays, there is saying that ‘woman should not just rely on their husbands.

It is the atmosphere of the Aci Tabuh Rah Pengangon ritual or often known as the Siat Tipat Bantal at Kapal customary village, Mengwi, Badung district, Thursday (Oct. 5). Hundreds of Kapal customary villagers were involved in the Aci Tabuh Rah Pengangon. In addition to the community, this unique tradition was also attended by the Regional Secretary of Badung district, Wayan Adi Arnawa.

The ritual was followed by all Kapal customary villagers. All the villagers were then divided into two camps, namely the northern camp and southern camp. At first, the two camps held a ceremony in the temple and were then resumed with worship at the outermost courtyard of the Desa/Puseh temple of Kapal.

Thousands of tipat and bantal were prepared by the temple apparatus.

After dividing them, they were thrown each other like a war accompanied with bleganjur gamelan music.

Chief of Kapal customary village, Ketut Sudarsana, said that Aci Tabuh Rah Pengangon formerly known as perang tipat (tipat war) is an annual ritual having been carried out for generations at Kapal customary village. This tradition is then preserved, so that it is always carried out by the Kapal customary village. “This activity aims to invoke prosperity for all customary villagers of Kapal,” he said.

Aci Tabuh Rah Pengangon has

the meaning of offerings or an expression of gratitude before God in his manifestation as Lord Shiva.

Aci means ‘offering,’ Tabuh means ‘echoing,’ Rah means ‘power’ and Pengangon is another name of Lord Shiva. “Mutual throw of tipat and bantal is aimed to bring together the symbol of pradhana (female) and purusha (male), resulting in fertility,” he explained.

Ketut Sudarsana asserted that Aci Tabuh Rah Pengangon is held by customary village because all the villages participated to enjoy the welfare. It is bringing together the tipat as symbol of ocean, pradhana (female) and bantal as symbol of mountain, purusha (male).

Uniting the ocean and mountain is believed to be able to create life.

“Two different things will present a life that can produce a good life,” he said.

Tipat and bantal thrown are not to target the opponent’s body but to make them both merge in the air and then fall to the ground.

This symbolizes the rendezvous of purusha and pradhana which then produces a seed of life. Remnants of the scattered tipat and bantal are the collected again. Those remaining intact are distributed back to residents for consumption, while the infeasible ones are distributed to residents to be scattered in paddy fields and used as animal feed. It is meant to invoke a good life seed for residents, animals and plants.

Sudarsana explained the tradition was started to be implemented in 1339. It marked the arrival of prime minister of Singasari dynasty in Bali, namely Ki Kebo Waruya.

He received a mandate from the Balinese King named Asta Sura Ratna Bumi Banten to renovate the Purusada Temple at Kapal village.

BANGUI - The Central African Republic (CAR) said on Tuesday that a diplomatic passport that tennis star Boris Becker claims entitles him to immunity in bankruptcy proceedings in Britain “is a fake”.

“The diplomatic passport that he has is a fake,” foreign ministry chief of staff Cherubin Mologbama told AFP. The document’s serial number corresponded to one of a batch of “new passports that were stolen in 2014,” he said.

In addition, the passport -- a copy of which has been seen by AFP, and bears the date of March 19, 2018 -- does not carry the signature or the stamp of the foreign minister, Charles Armel Doubane, Mologbama said.

Becker, responding through a German magazine, insisted that he held genuine diplomatic status.

“It’s the truth. It is a fact that I am, today, a diplomat” of the CAR, he said in a filmed interview with Top Magazin Frankfurt.

On Friday, lawyers for Germany’s three-time Wimbledon champion lodged a claim in the High Court in Britain saying that he had been appointed a sports attache

for the CAR to the European Union (EU) in April.

This, they argued, granted him immunity under the 1961 Vienna Diplomatic Convention on Diplomatic Relations from bankruptcy proceedings over failure to pay a long-standing debt.

“Becker’s job profile does not exist” in the CAR’s records, Mologbama said.

Furthermore, the passport says that Becker’s diplomatic function is “financial charge de mission,” a role that “has nothing to do with sporting questions,” he noted.

In April, the 50-year-old former tennis star had tweeted a picture of himself shaking hands with CAR President Faustin-Archange Touadera at a meeting in Brussels.

Becker shook up the tennis world at Wimbledon in 1985 when, as an unseeded player, he became the then youngest-ever male Grand Slam champion at the age of 17, defending the trophy the following year.

BEIJING - Kim Jong Un declared North Korea’s unstinting “friendship, unity and cooperation” with Beijing during his third visit to China this year, in a show of loyalty to his main ally following a landmark summit with US President Donald Trump.

The two-day visit which ends Wednesday is designed to reassure Beijing that Pyongyang will not neglect its interests as Trump and the young autocrat move into uncharted diplomatic terrain.

The performance is part of a delicate balancing act for Kim, who analysts say is seeking to play US and Chinese interests off each other while maintaining good relations with Beijing, his economic patron and diplomatic protector.

China and the US both hope to see the Korean peninsula free of nuclear weapons, but Beijing is concerned Washington and Pyongyang might move closer at its expense, a possibility that China sees as threatening to its economic and security interests in the region.

While China was not present at the June 12 summit in Singapore, it lent Kim a plane to travel to the city-state, a clear sign that it

remains an influential force in the diplomatic shuffle.

The Cold War-era allies, which fought side-by-side against USled UN forces and South Korea in the 1950-1953 Korean War, have sought to repair ties strained

by Pyongyang’s nuclear tests and Beijing’s support of subsequent UN sanctions.

Kim chose Beijing for his first official foreign trip in March and met Xi again in May in the northeastern port city of Dalian.

Kim also invoked the “prospect for the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula” following his meeting with Trump.

For his part, Xi told Kim that China “speaks highly” of his summit with Trump and he urged Washington and Pyongyang to implement their agreement struck in Singapore.

Dead turtles and dolphins washed ashore

Some parents wary of cannabis-based medication for epilepsy

NEGARA — Within the past month, people often found a number of marine mammals and sea turtles getting stranded and died along the coast of Jembrana. On Monday morning (Jun. 18), a dead dolphin was found getting stranded on Tembles Beach, Penyaringan, Mendoyo. Previously, along the coastline of Jembrana from Gilimanuk to Pekutatan were also found a dozen of dead turtles. This condition draws the attention of animal observers, especially turtle observers.

Chief of the Kurma Asih turtle conservation of Perancak, Wayan Anom Astika Jaya, said the number of marine animals including turtles found dead and stranded on the beach draws some questions.

Moreover, within a month there are 11 turtles found dead. They are mostly female turtles. He did not know for sure why the turtles died.

He hoped that related institutions can do a research. “Probably this can happen due to damaged habitat, illegal poaching or being caught in fishing nets,” he explained.

Similar thing also applies to other marine animals found dead such as bottlenose dolphins recently. Based on information, the dolphin has the length of about 1.7 meters and weight of about 70 kilogram. When found by residents, the dolphin was already in decaying condition.

A hamlet coordinator of Tembles, Ngurah Sudarsana, said that villagers took the initiative to bury the dolphin carcasses. The dolphins were estimated to get stranded to the beach as being swept away by tidal waves. Similarly, he did know exactly why the dolphins died. (kmb26)

Some U.S. experts said it will make little difference when it comes to helping people with the disorder, at least in the United States, but others said it would give legitimacy to a disorder that some people are reluctant to recognize.

The WHO added both online and offline gaming disorder to its latest draft of the International Classification of Diseases manual, called ICD-11.

This isn’t about kids spending a few hours in the basement playing “Fortnite” or “Call of Duty.” As with any medical disorder, the person affected must be seriously impaired.

“Gaming disorder is characterized by a pattern of persistent or recurrent gaming behavior (‘digital gaming’ or ‘video gam-

ing’), which may be online or offline,” the manual says.

The symptoms listed by WHO echo symptoms for other addictive or compulsive disorders.

They include: a lack of control over gaming; giving gaming precedence over other life interests and daily activities; and continuation or escalation of gaming despite negative consequences.

“The behavior pattern is of sufficient severity to result in significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational or other important areas of functioning,” WHO said.

“Having recognition from the WHO is significant,” said Dr. Petros Levounis, chair of psychiatry at the New Jersey Medical School at Rutgers University.

WHO’s ICD-11 is used widely outside the United States for classifying all disease. In the U.S., the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) is used to define mental illness. It mentions gaming disorder in its latest edition (DSM-5) but says more research is needed before listing it as a separate disorder.

“The ‘gamers’ play compulsively, to the exclusion of other interests, and their persistent and recurrent online activity results in clinically significant impairment or distress. People with this condition endanger their academic or job functioning because of the amount of time they spend playing,” it says. (net)

LONDON - A British pharmaceutical company is getting closer to a decision on whether the U.S government will approve the first prescription drug derived from the marijuana plant, but parents who for years have used cannabis to treat severe forms of epilepsy in their children are feeling more cautious than celebratory.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is expected to decide by the end of the month whether to approve GW Pharmaceuticals’ Epidiolex. It’s a purified form of cannabidiol — a component of cannabis that doesn’t get users high — to treat Dravet and LennoxGastaut syndromes in kids. Both forms of epilepsy are rare.

Cannabidiol’s effect on a variety of health conditions is frequently touted, but there is still little evidence to back up advocates’ personal experiences. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has long categorized cannabis as a Schedule I drug, a category with “no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse.” That strictly limits research on potential medical uses for cannabis or the chemicals in it, including cannabidiol, or CBD. But for years, parents desperate to find anything to help their children have turned to the marijuana-based products made legal by a growing number of states. She moved from Maine to Colorado in 2014 so she could legally get CBD for her now-5-year-old daughter, Addelyn, who was born with a brain malformation that causes seizures.

As for the potential approval of a pharmaceutical based on CBD, she said fear is her first reaction.

“I want to make sure that her right to continue using what works for her is protected, first and foremost. That’s my job as her mom,” Patrick said.

Advocates like Patrick became particularly concerned when GW Pharmaceuticals’ U.S. commercial business, Greenwich Biosciences, began quietly lobbying to change states’ legal definition of marijuana, beginning in 2017 with proposals in Nebraska and South Dakota.

Some worried the company’s attempt to ensure its product could be legally prescribed and sold by pharmacies would have a side effect: curtailing medical marijuana programs already operating in more than two dozen states. (net)

Just to be known, the subak museum located at Sanggulan Tabanan spreads across the area of 6.28 hectares. The land belongs to the asset of provincial government and the museum building (exhibition hall) is built by the Ministry of Public Works. Exposed to volcanic ashes, Tiga villagers catch cold

BANGLI —Volcanic ashes due to Mount Agung eruption in Karangasem a few days ago spread to the region of Bangli. Based on information, the distribution of ashes with small intensity was experienced by residents in the area of Tiga village. Aside from exposure to plants, the ashes also began to affect the disruption of respiratory health of local residents.

Headman of Tiga, Putu Merta Utama, when asked for his confirmation on Tuesday (Jun. 19) justified the condition. He revealed the volcanic ash rain with thin intensity has been experienced since a week ago. The last ash rain happened about two days ago. “The ash rain happening two days ago belonged to high intensity,” he said.

He mentioned the village areas affected by the exposure to volcanic ashes are the Tiga village to the north, such as Kayuambua and Malet. The exposure to ashes has already affected people’s crops. Flowers of chili and durians of local residents fell out due to such ash exposure. “All leaves of the plants turned white because of the ashes. The flowers of chili and durian fell out. In the past, similar ash rain caused durians to fall out,” he explained.

Besides, the exposure to volcanic ashes also claimed to have an impact on disruption of the people’s respiratory health. Merta added that many residents at his village are now starting to catch cold including himself.

Related to that condition, he admitted to immediately report the condition to public health center nearby. This will also be coordinated with the sub-district government to be further forwarded to the district government. (kmb40)

Art Market thronged by visitors on long holidays

GIANYAR —Filling the moment after the Eid al Fitr holidays, hundreds of domestic tourists thronged the Sukawati Art Market on Tuesday (Jun. 19).

In the arts market, they purchased clothes, paintings and various handicraft products. Surely, this condition has direct impact on the traffic density on the road sections around the market.

Hasan, a visitor from Yogyakarta, admitted that since last Sunday he has been vacationing in Bali. Before returning home, he deliberately took his family to hunt various handicraft products at Sukawati Art Market. “I take advantage of the holiday to travel with family and come here. At this

market, there is a lot of art products I like best,” he said.

Meanwhile, a merchant at Sukawati Art Market, Nyoman Lodri, said that since a week ago the visit to the market has increased compared to normal days. The visit was dominated by domestic tourists. “Well,

the visit is quite bustling. Maybe this happens due to Eid holidays,” she said.

To this woman having been selling at the Sukawati Art Market since the 1990s, the visit is not comparable to the time when the Sukawati Art Market on its heyday.

“If compared to the past time, it is not far comparable, but we are still grateful that there have been visitors shopping here.

Moreover, on usual days it is more tranquil,” she said.

According to this 59-year-old woman, the foreign tourist visit remains quiet. The tourist visit is dominantly directed to a number of souvenir shops opened in the area of Gianyar and Denpasar. “So, during normal days we cannot do selling because tourists have been directed to the souvenir markets,” she complained.

She hoped the government can provide solutions related to such condition, especially at the Sukawati Art Market as there are thousands of merchants relying on their life through this livelihood. “Although it cannot recover like the past heyday, we hope the conditions of the merchants can be a little better,” she said.

On the other hand, the density of tourist visits has direct impact on the traffic. As consequence, the parking of vehicles should be done along the road side in front of the Sukawati Police. A number of police officers were busy organizing the traffic of vehicles, especially at the intersection between the art market and public market of Sukawati. ‘The Catcher was a Spy’: Moe Berg’s double life as secret agent LOS ANGELES - Baseball pro Moe Berg wasn’t much of a star in the diamond but he was an MVP in the theater of war, risking his life behind enemy lines as an Allied spy.

Berg traded in his catcher’s mitt for a trench coat and a high-stakes mission to monitor -- and assassinate, if necessary -- the Nazis’ chief nuclear scientist.

His amazing story is dramatized in the stranger-than-fiction espionage thriller “The Catcher Was a Spy,” starring Paul Rudd, Paul Giamatti and a host of other big names, and opening in US theaters on Friday.

“This is a weird World War II story that no one really knows about,” director Ben Lewin (“The Sessions”) told a preview audience in Santa Monica, southern California, earlier this month.

“You unpeel the onion and it’s more and more puzzling and fasci-

A secretive and eccentric man with a steel-trap intellect, Berg was born in Harlem, New York, in 1902 to a pharmacist and a housewife.

Number missing in Indonesia ferry disaster jumps to nearly 180: police

Nearly 180 passengers are missing after a ferry sank into the depths of a volcanic lake in Indonesia, police said Wednesday, almost tripling initial estimates. But the search-and-rescue agency cautioned it was still unclear how many people were aboard the vessel when it capsized.

The traditional wooden boat which sank Monday on Sumatra’s Lake Toba, a popular tourist destination, was thought to be operating illegally with no manifest or passenger tickets.

The situation has sparked confusion -- and different estimates from various agencies -- about the number of passengers on the over-

crowded boat. Indonesia’s disaster agency originally said some 80 people along with dozens of motorcycles were on the vessel when it overturned and sank.

It had a 43-passenger capacity, according to the transport ministry.

On Wednesday police said there were as many as 178 people missing, which if confirmed would

make it one of Indonesia’s worst maritime disasters.

Authorities have been relying on families who have reported that missing relatives may have been on the doomed vessel. “Many people got on the boat without a ticket so it’s unclear how many were on board,” Muhammad Syaugi, the head of the search and rescue

agency, told AFP. Later at a press conference, Syaugi added: “There are many people who have reported their relatives missing, but whether they were on the boat or not we don’t know.”

So far, four bodies have been found and another 18 people rescued, according to the local disaster agency, as the search turned to recovering the bodies of victims -- including those still trapped inside the sunken boat.

“We’ll be here until they find my brother’s body,” said Nurhayati,

among hundreds of grief-stricken people waiting by the shore for updates. “We just want to see his body and take him with us.”
