‘Finding Dory’ Scores Record $136.2 Million Opening

LOS ANGELES - Family audiences turned out in droves over the weekend, propelling “Finding Dory” to a massive $136.2 million debut and establishing a new record for an animated film opening. The sequel to 2003’s “Finding Nemo” was bolstered by strong reviews and residual affection for the Oscar-winning first film. It’s a return to form for Pixar after the animation studio behind “Toy Story” and “The Incredibles” suffered its first box office failure last year with “The Good Dinosaur.” But its decades of excellence continue to be the brand’s major selling points. “It’s amazing when you look at the longevity of this brand, the viability of it, and the unfettered enthusiasm pretty much everyone has for Pixar,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at comScore. “Finding Dory” centers on a blue tang fish with short term memory loss (Ellen

DeGeneres) and her quest to be reunited with her long-lost parents. Its opening weekend results sailed past the previous high-water mark for an animated film -- “Shrek the Third’s” $121.6 million launch in 2007 -- and ranks as the second-best June debut, behind “Jurassic World’s” $208.8 million bow. Overseas, “Finding Dory” added another $50 million to its haul from 29 international markets, including Australia, Argentina, Russia and China, where its $17.5 million debut ranks as the biggest ever for a Pixar release. The success of “Finding Dory” comes as Disney, Pixar’s parent company, has dominated the movie business, fielding the year’s three

highest-grossing pictures globally in “Zootopia,” “The Jungle Book” and “Captain America: Civil War.” “Finding Dory” seems destined to join those films among 2016’s top earners, partly because it is appealing to all age groups. BEIJING - Severe floods in southern China have killed at least 22 people and left 20 missing since Saturday, the government said, with the rains expected to continue for the next three days. About 200,000 people from eight southern provinces and regions, including Hubei, Sichuan, Guizhou, Jiangxi, Yunnan, Zhejiang and Anhui, had been forced to evacuate, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said on its website. Water quality in Lake Batur has decreased lately. It is characterized by an increase in the content of biological oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) having exceeded the threshold.

One of the factors causing this condition is the uncontrollable use of chemical pesticides in the agricultural sector. To prevent the water condition of the Bali’s largest lake from getting worse, farmers are expected to switch to the use of phyto-pesticide. This was conveyed by the Head of the Bangli Agriculture and Forestry Agency, I Wayan Tagel Sujana. He described that all this time the use of chemical pesticides in the agricultural land around the Lake Batur is rampantly encountered. This condition does not only result in increasingly poor soil structure, but also pollutes the water of Lake Batur having been so far becoming the life support for Balinese society. As anticipation against further pollution, it may not only be handed over to the government, but there must be participation of farmers. One of the ways is the use of phytopesticides. “To anticipate pest attack, farmers should not continuously use chemical pesticides. However, they need to switch to plant-based pesticides. This is one of the ways to reduce the pollution of the lake water,” he said. Phyto-pesticides, said Sujana, source from plants, such as roots,

stems and leaves of fruit retaining bioactivity against insects. When compared to chemical pesticides, phyto-pesticides are indeed slower in killing pests. However, it does not have a bad impact on the environment and vegetation. “With phyto- pesticides, the affected insects will die slowly and they cannot develop. Besides, it will have no bad impacts on the environment. Soil fertility will remain to be well maintained,” he said. Phyto-pesticides have been applied on a pilot project across the area of two hectares of land. The harvest was much better than the use of chemical pesticides, especially in terms of health. In order that this way can be adopted by all farmers, the development activities continue to be intensified and coupled with the application of field school. “For the pilot project, we use shallot plants. It has good quality and this needs to be applied by farmers,” added the official from Gaga hamlet, Tamanbali. Scientists battle to save world’s coral reefs

HONOLULU — After the most powerful El Nino on record heated the world’s oceans to never-before-seen levels, huge swaths of once vibrant coral reefs that were teeming with life are now stark white ghost towns disintegrating into the sea. And the world’s top marine scientists are still struggling in the face of global warming and decades of devastating reef destruction to find the political and financial wherewithal to tackle the loss of these globally important ecosystems. “What we have to do is to really translate the urgency,” said Ruth Gates, president of the International Society for Reef Studies and director of the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology. Gates, who helped organize a conference this week for more than 2,000 international reef scientists, policymakers and others, said the scientific community needs to make it clear how “intimately reef health is intertwined with human health.” The International Coral Reef Symposium convenes Monday to try to create a more unified conservation plan for coral reefs. She said researchers have to find a way to implement large scale solutions with the help of governments. Consecutive years of coral bleaching have led to some of the most widespread mortality of reefs on record, leaving scientists in a race to save them. While bleached coral often recovers, multiple years weakens the organisms and increases the risk of death. Researchers have achieved some success with projects such as creating coral nurseries and growing forms of “super coral” that can withstand harsher conditions. But much of that science is being done on a very small scale with limited funding. Bob Richmond, director of the University of Hawaii’s Kewalo Ma-

rine Laboratory, said the problems are very clear: “overfishing of reef herbivores and top predators, land-based sources of pollution and sedimentation, and the continued and growing impacts of climate change.” While reefs are major contributors to many coastal tourist economies, saving the world’s coral isn’t just about having pretty places for vacationers to explore. Reefs are integral to the overall ecosystem and are an essential component of everyday human existence. Reefs not only provide habitat for most ocean fish consumed by humans, but they also shelter land from storm surges and rising sea levels. Coral has even been found to have medicinal properties. In one project to help save reefs, researchers at the University of Hawaii’s Institute of Marine Biology have been taking samples from corals that have shown tolerance for harsher conditions in Oahu’s Kaneohe Bay and breeding them with other strong strains in slightly warmer than normal conditions to create a super coral. The idea is to make the corals more resilient by training them to adapt to tougher conditions before transplanting them into the ocean. Another program run by the state of Hawaii has created seed banks and a fast-growing coral nursery for expediting coral restoration projects. Most of Hawaii’s species of coral are unlike other corals around the world in that they grow very slowly, which makes reef rebuilding in the state difficult. So officials came up with a plan to grow large chunks of coral in a fraction of the time it would

This situation is made all the more tragic by the fact that several very poor families’ homes have been severely damage. 75 year old Grandma Sriani’s house, for example, has been eaten halfway through but eh ocean. As recently observed in Ketapang hamlet in Pengambengan, the coastline is hit with the brunt of ocean waves everyday and two to three meters of the shore have

already disappeared. Aan, another local resident, said that her land is eroded one meter every day. “Within a month, how many meters of the land will disappear? Within one year, this village will probably be gone” said Aan. Many fishermen from this village have been forced to move, many of whom are either staying with relatives or renting a place in

a more secure location. Others however have managed to survive on the coast, even though many homes have collapsed from being continuously hit by waves as Mr. Parno and grandma Sriani -who lives alone, have experienced. “Even though the issues related to abrasion cannot be immediately resolved -because authority lies with the central government, we hope that

ment but its revetment is also having repairs done to is as many areas have become fragile. “We are also making improvement to the revetment and the parking area and compound wall are also being renovated to make them look nicer”, he explained.

Thousands of people enthusiastically follow Pejeng Porridge Festival

GIANYAR - Thousands of people thronged the Sapta Dharma Square at Pejeng, Sunday (Jun. 19) to follow the second Pejeng Porridge Festival. As a series of village games, the festival aims to introduce the culinary richness of Pejeng to general public. A total of 11 merchants were involved to peddle porridge cuisine in this festival. More interestingly, the porridge was provided at free of charge to every resident previously participating in the fun walk. This leisurely stroll was not just a sport because while covering the distance along eight kilometers, they also collected plastic waste. Apart from porridge, the other typical cuisines such as pesan telengis, pesan lindung and pesan kacang were also available at the festival arena. According to headman of Pejeng, Cok Agung Kusumayudha Pemayun,

the merchants participating in the festival were given stimulant fund worth IDR 500,000. With the funds, each merchant is required to provide 100 portions of porridge distributed to the public at free of charge. He explained the porridge festival is held to promote the local typical cuisines of Pejeng particularly the porridge. The public is expected to know about the peculiar taste of Pejeng porridge. “We hope that people especially the young generation in the future will love more their traditional culinary treasures,” he said. Further, he disclosed that when the typical cuisines of Pejeng have been more famous, the welfare of small businesses can be increased. Moreover, in the future he is going to establish the center for unique cuisines of Pejeng. Hopefully, merchants can set a decent price for the cuisines on offer.. (kmb25)

Many of these rules, including; not respecting visiting hours, carrying too much luggage, groups of people coming into the emergency or treatment rooms, smoking on the hospital area and bringing children under 12 years old to visit patients, are however often disregarded. Due to rampant violations of such rules, Sanglah Hospital has decided to crack down. In addition to meeting the requirements for JCI accreditation, tightening supervision of visitor activities is also of direct benefit to patients. To begin with Sanglah Hospital’s security personal will be cracking down on both visitors and medical personal who try to use the front door of the emergency room as this is forbidden by JCI rules. “Although it has never been allowed, now we are making sure that it does not happen. The front door is prioritized for patients, while others must use the back door” said Putu Putra Wisada, Chief of Legal

This is different than smoking on hospital grounds which is strictly forbidden. Municipal Police have often caught people breaching this rule. Wisada added that he hopes that people will comply with the rules, including respecting visiting hours which run from 11:30 to 13:00 and from 18:00 to 20:00. Visitors are asked to only visit within these hours so as not to disturb other patients who need a lot of rest. Until now there have been no consequences for people who break the rules but soon offenders will be spoken to. Supervision will b carried out by both security guards and hospital personnel. (kmb42)

Hundreds of riot police cordoned off the city’s main Taksim Square to prevent the “Trans Pride” rally taking place during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Authorities have banned transgender and gay pride marches this month, citing security concerns after the ultranationalist warnings against any such events on Turkish soil. “Football fans can rally in this country whenever they want. WASHINGTON — When the U.S. housing bubble peaked a decade ago, soon to burst with far-reaching consequences, the pain was particularly severe for black and Hispanic Americans.

World War II and overall home ownership rates climbed. Many minority homeowners who bought or refinanced during the bubble eventually became trapped by predatory mortgages, some requiring no money down and monthly payments that eventually ballooned. Just 41.5 percent of black households own their homes, down from nearly 50 percent in late 2004, according to the Census Bureau. The share of Hispanic homeowners dropped to 45.3 percent from roughly 50 percent. Both drops were sharper than the decline in white home ownership — to 72.1 percent from roughly 75 percent. The Urban Institute forecast last year that Hispanic home ownership will rise slightly through 2030 but that black homeownership will tumble to 40 percent by 2030 if U.S. economic growth is about average and 38 percent if growth is slow. A series of sudden emergency expenses cost Carmen and Ricardo Ramirez their one-bedroom condominium in Washington Heights, a neighborhood near Manhattan’s northern tip. The couple had bought their home in 2005 for $299,000 with an adjustable-rate mortgage that was popular during the bubble and destructive during the bust once the interest and principal payments were adjusted higher. Life seemed manageable until 2010, when the recession forced them to close their steakhouse restaurant. Then Ricardo suffered a traumatic brain injury during a fall in 2011,

Nigerian naira slumps 23 percent after currency peg ends

LAGOS - Nigeria’s naira slumped 23 percent against the U.S. dollar on Monday in tentative interbank trading after central bank removed its currency peg, Thomson Reuters data showed. The naira traded just twice at 255 against the dollar, and less than $1 million had changed hands by 11:00 a.m. (1000 GMT), as dealers said they were nervous about foreign exchange liquidity under the new system. Monday’s rate was sharply weaker than the 197 peg the central bank had been maintaining for the past 16 months, then abandoned last week in a bid to alleviate chronic forex shortages. But it was still off the 350 seen on the parallel market since a slump in oil revenues started hammering public finances and foreign currency reserves.

Naira market trading will close at 14:00 pm (1300 GMT). Foreign investors and economists had called for months for a naira devaluation as the forex shortages choked economic growth and led to widespread capital flight. The central bank said last week it would abandon the peg in a “managed float”. The median forecast from 10 analysts surveyed by Reuters suggests it will could trade on Monday as weak as 300 per dollar. Africa’s biggest economy, which contracted by 0.4 percent in the first quarter, faces its worst crisis in decades after the decline in oil prices since 2014 and last year’s introduction of a currency peg. Indonesia vows more decisive action after Chinese ship spat

JAKARTA — Indonesia said it will continue to take “decisive” action against foreign ships operating illegally in waters under its jurisdiction after Beijing criticized its navy for shooting at Chinese fishing vessels. Indonesian navy spokesman First Admiral Edi Sucipto on Monday confirmed an Indonesian warship fired warning shots at Chinese fishing vessels in waters off Indonesia’s Natuna islands and detained one of the vessels and its seven crew members. He said the incident occurred on Friday. “We will not hesitate to take decisive action against foreign ships, whatever their flag and nationality, when they commit violations in Indonesian territory,” Sucipto said. China’s Foreign Ministry released a statement of protest on Sunday and said the Indonesian navy had “abused its military

force.” It said one fisherman was injured during the incident. China’s expansive claims to the South China Sea do not include the Natuna islands, which are nearly 2,000 kilometers (1,250 miles) from the Chinese mainland in waters between Malaysia and Borneo. But China’s nine dash line, which it uses to roughly demarcate its ambitions for maritime boundaries, overlaps with the section of Indonesia’s internationally-recognized exclusive economic zone extending from the Natuna islands. Rescuers continue search for missing Swiss hiker on Mt Semeru

LUMAJANG - A joint search and rescue (SAR) team continued its operation to look for a Swiss hiker, who had gone missing at Mount Semeru in East Java Province. “The search for the missing hiker has resumed this Monday and will be continued for the next seven days following a request by the victims family and the Honorary Consulate of Switzerland,” Head of the National SAR Team of East Timur M.

Arifin stated here on Monday. The search for 26-year-old Lionel Du Creaux had been called off on Saturday evening after a 10-day operation that yielded no result. The SAR team followed the traces, hoping to find the missing mountaineer. Fresh footprints indicated that he was constantly on the move along the highest hiking route in Java, 3,676 meters above sea level. The team had searched the 75-

meter-deep valley called Blank 75, and several places, such as Kalimati, Patok A, and Patok B, and also at the peak of the mount but failed to find the Swiss national. On June 10, the team had conducted a search along the Tawon Songo route and found identical footprints along with a rope hook, believed to belong to Creaux at the point B area. It is located at coordinate point 08 degrees, 4 16.1 South and 112 degrees,

ROME - Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi was trounced by the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement in local elections in Rome and Turin on Sunday, clouding his chances of winning a do-or-die referendum in October. The result represented a major breakthrough for 5-Star, which feeds off popular anger over widespread corruption, with the party’s Virginia Raggi making history by becoming the first woman mayor in the Italian capital. “A new era is beginning with us,” said Raggi, who won 67 percent of the vote in the run-off ballot. “We’ll work to bring back legality and transparency to the city’s institutions.” As a consolation for Renzi, his centre-left Democratic Party (PD) held on to power in Italy’s financial capital Milan and in the northern city of Bologna, beating more traditional, centre-right candidates in both places. Renzi has said he would not step down whatever the results on Sunday. Instead, he has pinned his future on the referendum on his constitutional reform that, he says, will bring stability to Italy and end its tradition of revolving-door governments. WASHINGTON - Republican Donald Trump said on Sunday the United States should consider more racial profiling, in response to a question about whether he supported greater law enforcement scrutiny of Muslim Americans after the Orlando mass shooting. “I think profiling is something that we’re going to have to start thinking about as a country,”Trump told CBS’ “Face the Nation.” “You look at Israel and you look at others, and they do it and they do it successfully. And you know, I hate the concept of profiling, but we have to start using common sense,” he said when asked if he supported increased profiling of Muslims in America. Trump made similar comments last December about profiling, the targeting of specific demographic groups for extra scrutiny, after a Muslim American and his wife killed 14 people in San Bernardino, California. Last week, Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee for the Nov. 8 election, sparked criticism from many in his party for his comments on American Muslims after the Orlando attack on Sunday, in which a U.S.-born Muslim man killed 49 people at a gay nightclub. In a speech on national security on Monday, Trump stood by his call for a temporary ban on Mus-

Braced for mayhem, Formula One plays safe

BAKU - Formula One had been braced for crashes and mayhem in Azerbaijan’s race debut on Sunday but instead the drivers defied all expectations and barely put a wheel out of place. The safety car never left the pit lane, there were no accidents and none of the four cars that failed to finish hit anything. LONDON - Andy Murray became the first player to hold aloft the super-sized Queen’s Club trophy for a fifth time after he beat big-serving Canadian Milos Raonic 6-7(5) 6-4 6-3 in the final of the Aegon Championships on Sunday. The British top seed’s title hopes appeared to be faltering when he trailed by a set and 3-0 down in the second set but the 2013 Wimbledon champion drew on his greater grasscourt pedigree to turn the match around. Murray, who also hoisted the trophy in 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2015, had shared the previous record of four Queen’s titles with seven other men, including Boris Becker, Roy Emerson and Raonic’s new grasscourt coach John McEnroe. However, a backhand volley into the net from Raonic allowed Murray to climb to the top of the pile and celebrate a winning start to his renewed coaching relationship with Ivan Lendl. “This tournament has loads of history... it’s a pleasure to play in front of someone like John (McEnroe)... and any time you can do something a bit better than someone like him, it’s an amazing feeling,” Murray said during the presentation ceremony. “To win here for a fifth time means a lot to me.”

SAINT-MARTIN-DE-RE — Spain’s often overlooked defense still has an important role to play at the European Championship. The offense and its unique possession game gets most of the credit for the team’s success, but the defense carries the load so the talented midfielders can impress up front. Spain enters Tuesday’s final Group D game against Croatia trying to defend a 14-game unbeaten run at the European Championship. It also has a seveng a m e streak without conceding a goal, going back to its opening match in the 2012 tournament. The defense has also helped by scoring an important goal in the opening match against the Czech Republic, when central defender Gerard Pique came through with a late header after the strikers had struggled to find the net. “We have been playing at a very high level on defense,” Spain full back Cezar Azpilicueta said. “It’s important we continue like this because it gives more confidence to the players up front. It gives them more freedom to create plays on offense.” Spain hasn’t been defeated at the European Championship since a 1-0 loss to Portugal in the 2004 tournament. The last time it conceded a goal was in a 1-1 draw with Italy in its first match in 2012. It’s has gone 689 minutes without conceding a goal, which is the tournament’s longest run ever.

Pique and Sergio Ramos have been at the forefront of the Spanish defense for the past several years. Both were in the team that won Euro 2012 and the 2010 World Cup. Spain conceded only one goal in 2012 and two at the World Cup in South Africa two years earlier. Ramos, the team’s captain, was also in the squad that won Euro 2008, although he played as a right back in a team that had Carles Puyol and Carlos Marchena in the middle of the defense. In France, Juanfran Torres is playing right back and Jordi Alba is at left back. “Ramos is a reference to us both on and off the field,” Alba said. “He is an example to us all.” In Spain’s 3-0 win over Turkey last week, Ramos became the field player with the most appearances with the Spanish national team, with 134. Ramos and Pique carry a rivalry from club soccer in Spain, as Ramos plays for Real Madrid and Pique for Barcelona, but they have bonded to try to overcome the debacle of two years ago at the 2014 World Cup.
