In 2019, harvest area drops during January-April period

DENPASAR - Realization of rice harvest in January 2019 is 7,023 hectares while harvest predictions for February 2019 are 6,114 hectares, March (12,487 ha), and April posing the peak of the harvest is predicted to have a harvest area of 18,286 ha. Thus, the estimated harvested area for the period January to April 2019 amounts to 43,909 ha. The harvested area has decreased compared to the period of January to April 2018 because during that period it reached 52,688 ha. Likewise, the prediction of harvest for the period of May to August 2019 comes to 45,296 ha, lower than the realization of the harvest in May to August 2018 with the harvest area of 51,825 ha. Head of the Bali Horticultural Food Crops and Plantation (TPHP), I.B. Wisnuardhana, accompanied

by the Division Head of the TPHP Production, I Wayan Sunarta, said the realization of Bali rice produc-

TAKING low-dose aspirin as a preventative for heart attack or stroke is no longer recommended for adults age 70 or over, according to guidelines released Sunday. The recommendations, issued jointly by the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association, are a reversal of previous guidance that endorsed taking a baby aspirin daily to prevent cardiovascular problems in adults over age 50. The two groups agreed that for older adults with low risk — no prior history of heart attack or stroke — the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding outweighs any heart benefit. The change comes after a large international study found that even at low doses, long-term use of aspirin may be harmful — without providing any benefit — for older people who have not already had a heart attack or stroke. “Clinicians should be very selective in prescribing aspirin for people without known cardiovascular disease,” said Dr. Roger Blu-

menthal, co-chair of the 2019 ACC/ AHA Guideline on the Primary Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease, in a statement. “Aspirin should be limited to people at the highest risk of cardiovascular disease and a very low risk of bleeding.” The committee reminded individuals that a healthy lifestyle is the most important way to prevent the onset of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, heart failure, and atrial fibrillation. “The guidelines reinforce what we have known for more than a decade,” said Dr. Steven Nissen, chairman of the department of cardiovascular medicine at the Cleveland Clinic. “For patients without heart disease, the risks of aspirin, primarily bleeding, are significant. Student who refused chickenpox vaccine sues over school ban KENTUCKY - A Northern Kentucky student is suing the local health department after he was told he couldn’t come to school or play sports because he hasn’t received the chickenpox vaccine amid an outbreak at the school. Jerome Kunkel, 18, is suing the Northern Kentucky Health Department and its employees because the department said students who haven’t been vaccinated need to stay out of school until three weeks after the onset of a chickenpox rash on the last sick student or teacher, the department said. But Kunkel’s father said the family’s Christian faith keeps his son from getting vaccinated. “I don’t believe in that vaccine at all and they are trying to push it on us,” Bill Kunkle said, according to NBC affiliate WLWT. The health department announced the policy Feb. 21 in a letter to parents, citing an outbreak of chickenpox at the school. It first warned parents of the outbreak Feb. 5, urging them to get their children vaccinated. By March 14, the school had 32 cases of confirmed chickenpox, according to the health department.

Kopyol variety, genuine Bali coffee cultivated in Bedugul

DENPASAR — In response to the challenges of coffee in the future, more than 50 representatives of Bali roasters and baristas gathered at Bedugul Coffee Farm (BCF) to plant coffee of kopyol varieties. This activity aims to keep Bali coffee sustainable and increasingly known in the coffee matters of Indonesian and the world. Manager of BCF, Komang Sukarsana, stated that he invited baristas and roasters to plant coffee so they can tell customers about the existence of local coffee. “Hopefully, Bali coffee can be featured in future and my fellow baristas can tell more to customers about the existence of Bali local coffee,” he said recently. He planted coffee of kopyol varieties on an area of 6 hectares. Four hectares of them have been planted. The coffee planted is said to have high economic value. Kopyol coffee is the original Kintamani variety. The cultivation applies a single farm concept, namely one garden with one type of variety. “We use the original Kintamani coffee, namely the kopyol, so that in the future this Bali coffee will get featured. Our fellow baristas are expected to tell customers about the existence of local coffee,” he

added. In addition to cultivating authentic Bali coffee, planting this coffee is also meant to protect the environment. As a result of the incident, Abdul Haris Karim suffered injuries and cracks on the right cheek, Gedi Kurniawan suffered a wound on the left back, head in the rear and temple right above the right eye. Meanwhile, Muhammad Sandriadi suffered a wound on the right cheek. Chief of Denpasar Police, Ruddi Setiawan, when asked for his confirmation justified the incident. with carts is collected and transported to trucks to be further taken to Suwung landfill. But in reality, it was violated by the related parties and they sorted out the garbage there. Consequently, the area became to look dirty due to the accumulated garbage. This was then complained of by residents of Jabe Jero Kuta. For this reason, his agency reprimanded the related business players to change its working pattern and seek land as an operational location. They can contract or buy land for TPST, or buy operational cars to directly transport the garbage to Suwung landfill. “Don’t just use other people’s land because it can be reported as land grabbing,” he advised. About one in five of the Philippines’ 106 million people live in extreme poverty, getting by on less than $2 per day. Many, including children, work long hours as street vendors or labourers to make enough to feed themselves. Cavesirano, along with men at least twice his age, helps fishermen clean their nets by removing fish stuck in the gear. He keeps the fish as payment, paddles back to land and then sells them to buy food and medicine for his family. “My back usually aches from paddling but I cannot stop. I have to continue because we need to eat,” Cavesirano told AFP. The boy, who attends elementary school during the week, lives with his grandparents in a shelter pieced together from bamboo and plastic sheeting in a squatter community on the shore of Manila Bay. He is estranged from his mother. Cavesirano’s grandmother Remedios Santos said she was against her grandson working because of the risks he faces on the water but he was persistent. “I told him it is dangerous. But he said ‘Mama, other people won’t help us in life. So I will help you’,” said the 55-year old Santos, who still works as a scavenger. On a good day, Cavesirano can bring home a kilo of rice, which is enough to feed his family for the day, and 300-400 pesos ($6-$8). The money helps pay for his grandfather’s tuberculosis medicine and cover his school allowance for the coming week. The boy, who started working on the boats at the age of 10 after his brother taught him how to swim, dreams of finishing school and providing a better life for his family. “I want to reciprocate my grandparents’ kindness. SEOUL - A rare earthquake in South Korea was triggered by the country’s first experimental geothermal power plant, a team of government-commissioned experts said Wednesday. The southeastern port city of Pohang was rattled by a 5.4-magnitude earthquake in November 2017 -- the second-most powerful tremor ever in the normally seismically stable South. Dozens of people were injured and more than 1,500 left homeless -- while a nationwide college entrance exam was postponed in an unprecedented move as authorities scrambled with recovery efforts. A year-long government-commissioned study pointed to the geo-

thermal power plant as the cause. The plant works by injecting high-pressure water deep underground to tap heat from the Earth’s crust, but the process had produced micro-sized seismic activity as a result, said Lee Kang-kun, who led the research. “And as time passed, this triggered the earthquake in Pohang,” he added. “We concluded that the Pohang earthquake was a ‘triggered quake’. It wasn’t a natural earthquake.” Pohang residents filed a lawsuit against the government after the quake, and following the assessment Seoul expressed its “deep regret”. was temporarily suspended during the study -- will be “permanently shuttered”, the trade, industry and energy ministry said in a statement. It cost around 80 billion won ($71 million) to build and test operations began in 2016. Unlike neighbouring Japan, the Korean peninsula rarely experiences significant quakes but seismic activity is closely monitored as a spike can be the first indication that North Korea has staged a nuclear test. WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump heaped praise Tuesday on right-wing Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro -- and received plenty back -- in announcing a special relationship that he said could even see the Latin American country join NATO. At a joint news conference on the sun-soaked Rose Garden lawn, Trump and the man dubbed “Trump of the Tropics” let the mutual compliments flow. “I have always admired the United States of America. And this sense of admiration has just increased after you took office and the presidency,” Bolsonaro said. Trump, stressing Brazil’s partnership in the US-led campaign to force hard-left Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro from power, said Bolsonaro was “doing a fantastic job” and had “brought the country together.” For years Bolsonaro was little more than a marginal congressman, but his Trump-like campaign in 2018, promising to combat corruption and crime, and to end politics as usual, propelled him to surprise victory. His hard-right views, including frequent expressions of support for Brazil’s past period of military rule,

horrified the left and drove deep divisions in Latin America’s biggest nation. But at the press conference, his condemnation of what he called “fake news” -- opponents say he is referring merely to critical reports -- and references to deeply conservative social values pleased Trump. “We have many views that are similar,” Trump said. Trump spent much of the news conference discussing efforts to squeeze Venezuela’s authorities, which he warned could face many more sanctions than those already imposed in an attempt to cripple the government’s finances. Karadzic: Convicted war criminal with ‘1,000 different faces’ SARAJEVO - President, psychiatrist, poet and even New Age healer -- Radovan Karadzic lived a varied life before being convicted of war crimes in The Hague. On Wednesday a UN tribunal will decide how he spends the rest of it. The former Bosnian Serb leader is awaiting a final verdict on the 40-year-sentence he was handed in 2016 for his role in Bosnia’s 1990s inter-ethnic war, which left 100,000 people dead and displaced more than two million. He was convicted of 10 charges in total, including genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. The worst atrocity on the charge-sheet was the slaughter of some 8,000 Muslim men and boys in the eastern town of Srebrenica in July 1995. While the 73-year-old faces final judgement on Wednesday, Karadzic remains a deeply divisive figure in the court of public opinion. To the international community and his foes, Bosnia’s Croats and Muslims, he is a monster responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of people. “If Karadzic does not get what he deserves, then this will mean that there is no justice in this world,” Munira Subasic, a president of Mothers of Srebrenica group who lost 22 close relatives in the killings, told AFP ahead of the verdict. Orangutan mother blinded by air gun pellets in Indonesia

SIBOLANGIT — An orangutan mother has been blinded after being shot with at least 74 air gun pellets on Indonesia’s Sumatra island, where threats to the endangered species have increased as the palm oil and paper industries shrink its jungle habitat. An X-ray showed at least 74 air gun pellets in her body, including four in her left eye and two in the right, said veterinarian Yenny Saraswati with the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Program. The great ape, named “Hope” by her rescuers, also had several wounds believed to have been caused by sharp objects, she said Monday. Hope also was recovering from surgery to repair a broken collarbone. Villagers spotted the severely wounded orangutan in a farm in Aceh province’s Subulussalam district last week with her monthold baby, which was critically malnourished, said Sapto Aji Prabowo, who heads the Aceh provincial conservation agency. The baby died as rescuers rushed the pair to a clinic in neighboring North Sumatra province’s Sibolangit district. “Hopefully Hope can pass this

critical period, but she cannot be released to the wild anymore,” Saraswati said, adding that only removed seven of the pellets were removed because the veterinarians prioritized the broken collarbone and the risk of infection that it posed. The orangutan conservation program said the use of readily available air guns to shoot and kill wildlife, including orangutans, is a major problem in Indonesia. It said in the last 10 years, it has treated more than 15 orangutans with a total of nearly 500 air gun pellets in their bodies. Last year, an orangutan in the Indonesian part of Borneo died after being shot at least 130 times with an air gun, the second known killing of an orangutan that year. A 2018 comprehensive study of Borneo’s orangutans estimates their numbers have plummeted by more than 100,000 since 1999, as the palm oil and paper industries shrink their habitat and fatal conflicts with people increase. Only around 13,400 Sumatran orangutans remain in the wild. The species is listed as critically endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. (ap)

How does Euro 2020 qualifying work? Euro 2020 qualifiers get under way on Thursday with 24 places up for grabs at next year’s tournament, which will be held in 12 countries across Europe. How does it work?

UEFA’s 55 nations have been split into five groups of six teams and five groups of five. Each team plays home and away against the other teams in their group with the top two from each section becoming the first 20 teams to qualify.

What about the Nations League?

The traditional qualifying groups are the easy part, deciding the contestants for playoffs to

decide the remaining four places is a rather more complex process. UEFA’s inaugural Nations League played in the Autumn of 2018 split the 55 members into four tiers (League A-D) with four groups in each. The 16 Nations League group winners have the safety net of a playoff but will only take part if they fail to make the top two in their qualifying group. Those 16 nations are:

League A: England, Netherlands, Portugal, Switzerland League B: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denmark, Sweden, Ukraine League C: Finland, Norway, Scotland, Serbia League D: Belarus, Macedonia, Georgia, Kosovo

Each league will have a path of its own, all of which will feature two single-leg semi-finals and one single-leg final. The winner of each path will qualify for Euro 2020.

All nations were ranked 1-55 on their Nations League performance based on where they finished in their group, points won, goal difference etc. If a Nations League group winner also finishes in the top two of their qualifying group, their spot will go to the next best-ranked team in their league. What about the Nations League finals?

As group winners in League A, England, the Netherlands, Portugal and Switzerland will contest the first Nations League finals in June. The outcome of the finals will have no impact on who qualifies for Euro 2020.

When are the matches played?

Rabiot ‘held hostage’ by PSG, claims mother

Adrien Rabiot’s agent has accused Paris Saint-Germain of holding the midfielder “hostage” after he was suspended for going to a nightclub following their Champions League defeat by Manchester United.

WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump heaped praise Tuesday on right-wing Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro -- and received plenty back -- in announcing a special relationship that he said could even see the Latin American country join NATO. At a joint news conference on the sun-soaked Rose Garden lawn, Trump and the man dubbed “Trump of the Tropics” let the mutual compliments flow. “I have always admired the United States of America. And this sense of admiration has just increased after you took office and the presidency,” Bolsonaro said. Trump, stressing Brazil’s partnership in the US-led campaign to force hard-left Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro from power, said Bolsonaro was “doing a fantastic job” and had “brought the country together.” For years Bolsonaro was little more than a marginal congressman, but his Trump-like campaign in 2018, promising to combat corruption and crime, and to end politics as usual, propelled him to surprise victory. Karadzic: Convicted war criminal with ‘1,000 different faces’ SARAJEVO - President, psychiatrist, poet and even New Age healer -- Radovan Karadzic lived a varied life before being convicted of war crimes in The Hague. On Wednesday a UN tribunal will decide how he spends the rest of it. The former Bosnian Serb leader is awaiting a final verdict on the 40-year-sentence he was handed in 2016 for his role in Bosnia’s 1990s inter-ethnic war, which left 100,000 people dead and displaced more than two million. He was convicted of 10 charges in total, including genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. The worst atrocity on the charge-sheet was the slaughter of some 8,000 Muslim men and boys in the eastern town of Srebrenica in July 1995. While the 73-year-old faces final judgement on Wednesday, Karadzic remains a deeply divisive figure in the court of public opinion. To the international community and his foes, Bosnia’s Croats and Muslims, he is a monster responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of people. “If Karadzic does not get what he deserves, then this will mean that there is no justice in this world,” Munira Subasic, a president of Mothers of Srebrenica group who lost 22 close relatives in the killings, told AFP ahead of the verdict. At least 89 people are known to have died after flash floods and landslides tore through Indonesia’s Papua region, with the toll expected to rise further as rescuers hunt for dozens still missing, the national disaster agency said Tuesday.

Orangutan mother blinded by air gun pellets in Indonesia

SIBOLANGIT — An orangutan mother has been blinded after being shot with at least 74 air gun pellets on Indonesia’s Sumatra island, where threats to the endangered species have increased as the palm oil and paper industries shrink its jungle habitat. An X-ray showed at least 74 air gun pellets in her body, including four in her left eye and two in the right, said veterinarian Yenny Saraswati with the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Program. The great ape, named “Hope” by her rescuers, also had several wounds believed to have been caused by sharp objects, she said Monday. Hope also was recovering from surgery to repair a broken collarbone. Villagers spotted the severely wounded orangutan in a farm in Aceh province’s Subulussalam district last week with her monthold baby, which was critically malnourished, said Sapto Aji Prabowo, who heads the Aceh provincial conservation agency. The baby died as rescuers rushed the pair to a clinic in neighboring North Sumatra province’s Sibolangit district. “Hopefully Hope can pass this

critical period, but she cannot be released to the wild anymore,” Saraswati said, adding that only removed seven of the pellets were removed because the veterinarians prioritized the broken collarbone and the risk of infection that it posed. The orangutan conservation program said the use of readily available air guns to shoot and kill wildlife, including orangutans, is a major problem in Indonesia. A 2018 comprehensive study of Borneo’s orangutans estimates their numbers have plummeted by more than 100,000 since 1999, as the palm oil and paper industries shrink their habitat and fatal conflicts with people increase. Only around 13,400 Sumatran orangutans remain in the wild. The species is listed as critically endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. (ap)

Lombok was rocked by several earthquakes last summer, killing more than 500 people and leaving over 150,000 homeless. Last September, the country was hit by an earthquake and tsunami in Palu on Sulawesi island which killed around 2,200 people. The Southeast Asian archipelago of some 17,000 islands is one of the most disaster-prone nations on Earth, straddling the Pacific Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates collide. About one in five of the Philippines’ 106 million people live in extreme poverty, getting by on less than $2 per day. Many, including children, work long hours as street vendors or labourers to make enough to feed themselves. Cavesirano, along with men at least twice his age, helps fishermen clean their nets by removing fish stuck in the gear. He keeps the fish as payment, paddles back to land and then sells them to buy food and medicine for his family. “My back usually aches from paddling but I cannot stop. I have to continue because we need to eat,” Cavesirano told AFP. The boy, who attends elementary school during the week, lives with his grandparents in a shelter pieced together from bamboo and plastic sheeting in a squatter community on the shore of Manila Bay. He is estranged from his mother. Cavesirano’s grandmother Remedios Santos said she was against her grandson working because of the risks he faces on the water but he was persistent. “I told him it is dangerous. But he said ‘Mama, other people won’t help us in life. So I will help you’,” said the 55-year old Santos, who still works as a scavenger. On a good day, Cavesirano can bring home a kilo of rice, which is enough to feed his family for the day, and 300-400 pesos ($6-$8). The money helps pay for his grandfather’s tuberculosis medicine and cover his school allowance for the coming week. The boy, who started working on the boats at the age of 10 after his brother taught him how to swim, dreams of finishing school and providing a better life for his family. “I want to reciprocate my grandparents’ kindness. SEOUL - A rare earthquake in South Korea was triggered by the country’s first experimental geothermal power plant, a team of government-commissioned experts said Wednesday. The southeastern port city of Pohang was rattled by a 5.4-magnitude earthquake in November 2017 -- the second-most powerful tremor ever in the normally seismically stable South. Dozens of people were injured and more than 1,500 left homeless -- while a nationwide college entrance exam was postponed in an unprecedented move as authorities scrambled with recovery efforts. A year-long government-commissioned study pointed to the geo-

thermal power plant as the cause. The plant works by injecting high-pressure water deep underground to tap heat from the Earth’s crust, but the process had produced micro-sized seismic activity as a result, said Lee Kang-kun, who led the research. “And as time passed, this triggered the earthquake in Pohang,” he added. “We concluded that the Pohang earthquake was a ‘triggered quake’. It wasn’t a natural earthquake.” Pohang residents filed a lawsuit against the government after the quake, and following the assessment Seoul expressed its “deep regret”. The geothermal plant -- which

was temporarily suspended during the study -- will be “permanently shuttered”, the trade, industry and energy ministry said in a statement. It cost around 80 billion won ($71 million) to build and test operations began in 2016. Unlike neighbouring Japan, the Korean peninsula rarely experiences significant quakes but seismic activity is closely monitored as a spike can be the first indication that North Korea has staged a nuclear test. TAKING low-dose aspirin as a preventative for heart attack or stroke is no longer recommended for adults age 70 or over, according to guidelines released Sunday. The recommendations, issued jointly by the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association, are a reversal of previous guidance that endorsed taking a baby aspirin daily to prevent cardiovascular problems in adults over age 50. The two groups agreed that for older adults with low risk — no prior history of heart attack or stroke — the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding outweighs any heart benefit. The change comes after a large international study found that even at low doses, long-term use of aspirin may be harmful — without providing any benefit — for older people who have not already had a heart attack or stroke. “Clinicians should be very selective in prescribing aspirin for people without known cardiovascular disease,” said Dr. Roger Blu-

Jerome Kunkel, 18, is suing the Northern Kentucky Health Department and its employees because the department said students who haven’t been vaccinated need to stay out of school until three weeks after the onset of a chickenpox rash on the last sick student or teacher, the department said. But Kunkel’s father said the family’s Christian faith keeps his son from getting vaccinated. “I don’t believe in that vaccine at all and they are trying to push it on us,” Bill Kunkle said, according to NBC affiliate WLWT. The health department announced the policy Feb. 21 in a letter to parents, citing an outbreak of chickenpox at the school. It first warned parents of the outbreak Feb. 5, urging them to get their children vaccinated. By March 14, the school had 32 cases of confirmed chickenpox, according to the health department.

Kopyol variety, genuine Bali coffee cultivated in Bedugul

DENPASAR — In response to the challenges of coffee in the future, more than 50 representatives of Bali roasters and baristas gathered at Bedugul Coffee Farm (BCF) to plant coffee of kopyol varieties. This activity aims to keep Bali coffee sustainable and increasingly known in the coffee matters of Indonesian and the world. Manager of BCF, Komang Sukarsana, stated that he invited baristas and roasters to plant coffee so they can tell customers about the existence of local coffee. “Hopefully, Bali coffee can be featured in future and my fellow baristas can tell more to customers about the existence of Bali local coffee,” he said recently. He planted coffee of kopyol varieties on an area of 6 hectares. Four hectares of them have been planted. The coffee planted is said to have high economic value. Kopyol coffee is the original Kintamani variety. The cultivation applies a single farm concept, namely one garden with one type of variety. “We use the original Kintamani coffee, namely the kopyol, so that in the future this Bali coffee will get featured. Then, at 00:25, suddenly someone entered the office and immediately hit the victim making him turn unconscious. After getting conscious, he just realized to have been tied with a rope and his mouth was taped.

Due to this incident, BMC Money Changer or PT Bali Maspintjinra lost a safe containing cash worth IDR 800 million and foreign currency worth IDR 100 million. As a result of the incident, Abdul Haris Karim suffered injuries and cracks on the right cheek, Gedi Kurniawan suffered a wound on the left back, head in the rear and temple right above the right eye. Meanwhile, Muhammad Sandriadi suffered a wound on the right cheek. Chief of Denpasar Police, Ruddi Setiawan, when asked for his confirmation justified the incident. In 2019, harvest area drops during January-April period

DENPASAR - Realization of rice harvest in January 2019 is 7,023 hectares while harvest predictions for February 2019 are 6,114 hectares, March (12,487 ha), and April posing the peak of the harvest is predicted to have a harvest area of 18,286 ha. Thus, the estimated harvested area for the period January to April 2019 amounts to 43,909 ha. The harvested area has decreased compared to the period of January to April 2018 because during that period it reached 52,688 ha. Likewise, the prediction of harvest for the period of May to August 2019 comes to 45,296 ha, lower than the realization of the harvest in May to August 2018 with the harvest area of 51,825 ha. Head of the Bali Horticultural Food Crops and Plantation (TPHP), I.B. Wisnuardhana, accompanied

by the Division Head of the TPHP Production, I Wayan Sunarta, said the realization of Bali rice produc-

tion in January 2019 was 44,512 tons. Meanwhile, the estimation of rice production in February 2019 was 38,841 tons, March (79,210 tons), April (115,817 tons) and May (96,742 tons). To sum up, the rice production during the period of January to April 2019 is estimated to reach 282,746 tons. For the upcoming dry season starting in April, the TPHP Bali has anticipated by preparing physical agricultural infrastructure facilities (PSP).
