Coen brothers to jointly head Cannes festival jury

But the Coens are used to collaborating closely, having shared directing and writing duties on all of their films over the past three decades. The siblings are also Cannes darlings, having presented seven of their 16 features at the French Riviera showcase event. They picked up the festival’s top Palme d’Or prize for “Barton Fink” in 1991, its runner-up Grand Jury Prize for “Inside Llewyn Davis” in 2013, and its Best Director award for “Fargo” (1996) and “The Man Who Wasn’t There” (2001). The wry humour of their screenplays, their demanding production standards, and the outstanding cinematography they bring to bear on their movies have won a slew of awards in other competitions -- most notably the Oscars, where their “No Country for Old Men” cleaned up in several categories including Best

Picture in 2007. “The Coens incarnate a certain ‘auteur’ filmmaking that is universal and with wide appeal, full of humour and totally original in their way of looking at the world,” the director of the Cannes Film Festival, Thierry Fremaux, told AFP. Joel, 60, and Ethan, 57, take over running the Cannes jury from last year’s president Jane Campion, the New Zealand director of “The Piano”. The other members of the jury have not been announced yet, but Cannes’s organisers like to bring in filmmakers and actors of note from different regions around the world. The Cannes Film Festival’s official selection of movies competing for the Palme d’Or top prize is also usually an eclectic list ranging across themes and borders. The line-up is usually announced the month before the festival opens. If the Coen brothers’ filmography is anything to by, though, dark humour and offbeat characters or situations would be appealing traits they would be looking for. They have also increasingly been attracting Hollywood stars to their own films. George Clooney, for instance, has already appeared in three of their movies -- “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”, “Intolerable Cruelty” and “Burn After Reading”. He is appearing in a fourth Coen brothers film due to come out next year, “Hail, Caesar!”, with Josh Brolin, Tilda Swinton, Channing Tatum and Scarlett Johansson.

Realizing tourism village in North Badung not easy
PARIS - The Coen brothers, the award-winning American directors of “No Country for Old Men”, “Fargo” and “The Big Lebowski”, are to jointly head this year’s Cannes Film Festival jury, the organisers announced Tuesday. Joel and Ethan Coen will be copresidents of the panel of filmmakers and actors who will judge the 20-orso films in the main competition event of the festival, which will run May 13-24, according to a statement. “We are very happy to be coming back to Cannes,” the brothers were quoted as saying in the organisers’ statement, which was in French. The two directors added they were “especially happy at the opportunity being given to us to see films from around the entire world”. They stressed that Cannes “has always played an important role for us”, since the beginning of their careers. “Being presidents of the jury this year is even more of an honour in that we’ve never been presidents of anything before.” It is the first time the Cannes jury will be jointly headed by two people.

DENPASAR - The desire to revise the spatial plan of the North Badung from tourism supporting region into a combination of conservation and agro-tourism poses an advanced measure. However, according to Dr. Sudjana Budhi, the policy to reduce income inequality between the North Badung and South Badung would be difficult to be realized. “Establishment of tourism, agroindustry and eco-tourism village is not easy to be realized in order to also achieve other goals, namely
conservation and land conversion,” said Chairman of the Center for Economic and Business Data Analysis, Faculty of Economics and Business, Udayana University, in Denpasar. According to him, Badung government should formulate a detailed plan to establish community economic zones that should not be touched by the interests of big capital. If the North Badung region was not entirely handed over to the ability of local people to manage tourism, there would be a risk where
the government would pay much for the impact of land conversion and the destruction of nature conservation. “If the Badung government formulates the revision of Spatial Plan pursuant to the rules of utilization physically, then the North Badung will be stuck with the risk of land conversion and the risk of damage to nature conservation,” he said. He explained that opening spatial layout for community-based economic activities needed a masterplan with the support of protec-
tion for public interests, so that the spatial planning could be made concrete with regional bylaw (Perda) as legality of the parties to protect the interests because opening up the open space in North Badung would have the potential to kindle a struggle for land investments among investors, so that the initial goal to give a space to a lot of people could not be materialized. Earlier, Deputy Chairman I of the Badung House, I Ketut Suiasa, accompanied by Deputy Chairman II, I Made Sunarta, in a meeting
revealed that the executive and legislative agreed on several issues related to the spatial arrangement of North Badung where one of which was that North Badung remained to be preserved as conservation and buffer zone as well as agricultural zone. However, the existence of inequality related to community progress and welfare in the North Badung South Badung could not be ignored. NEW YORK — Mick Jagger has established a scholarship in honor of his late girlfriend, fashion designer L’Wren Scott. The scholarship will allow one master’s degree student per year over a period of three years to attend the elite Central Saint Martins, the London-based college announced this weekend. Scott, who committed suicide last March at age 49, had been close to a former course director at Central Saint Martins, the late Louise Wilson. Fabio Piras, the current course director of MA Fashion, says in a statement that he was “very grateful to receive this extremely generous scholarship package.” The grant covers tuition and some living expenses.
