New ‘Star Wars’ trilogy raises hopes after Disney results miss target

LOS ANGELES - The force of “Star Wars” lifted Walt Disney Co shares on Thursday as the promise of a new film trilogy overshadowed disappointing quarterly results and struggles at the media company’s television business.

The storied movie studio and theme park operator is scrambling to keep viewers who are abandoning its current top money maker, cable networks. The power of its characters and brands are the reason many investors stick with the company despite its challenges.

Disney shares rose more than 1 percent after Chief Executive Bob Iger said Disney had struck a deal with Rian Johnson, director of upcoming film “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” to create a new trilogy in the blockbuster science fiction series.

A live-action “Star Wars” TV series also is being developed for a streaming service that Disney is launching to capture online audiences, Iger said.

Disney shares rose about 1 percent from their Thursday closing price to $103.57 after the “Star Wars” announcements, reversing an initial falloff after Disney’s results raised concerns about cable subscriptions.

ESPN, the sports powerhouse that is seen as a proxy for Disney’s ability to fight the rapid migration of audiences to online viewing. Affiliate revenue rose and overall results at ESPN were comparable to the prior year for the quarter that ended in September, Disney said.

Total revenue from Disney’s cable business, the largest unit which includes ESPN and the Disney Channel, fell marginally to $3.95 billion in the fourth quarter, missing the $4.06 billion consensus of analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. To address challenges in its TV networks business, Disney is developing family-friendly streaming services that it will sell directly to consumers to compete with Netflix Inc and other rivals. Building those businesses tops the company’s agenda for the next year, Iger told analysts on a conference call.

“We believe creating a direct-to-consumer relationship is vital to the future of our media businesses, and it’s our highest priority this year,” he said.

New Disney releases will go to the company’s own service rather than Netflix, starting in 2019, and Iger on Thursday said the new service would be priced “substantially below” Netflix, a reflection of having less content. (rtr)

China bars billionaire actress Zhao Wei from stock trading for 5 years

BEIJING - Billionaire Chinese actress Zhao Wei and her husband have been barred from trading in the mainland stock market for five years and fined by the securities regulator, which cited their disclosure irregularities relating to a takeover bid of a firm.

Zhao and her husband Huang Youlong, through a company they controlled - Tibet Longwei Culture Media Co - made a failed attempt to buy 29.1 percent of Zhejiang Wanjia Co in late 2016. Zhejiang Wanjia was later taken over by another investor and renamed Zhejiang Sunriver Culture Co. But Tibet Longwei’s bid drew scrutiny of the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) regarding information disclosure and takeover-financing ability.

The regulator stated that the bid made misleading statements and major omissions in disclosures, according to a filing by Zhejiang Sunriver to the Shanghai stock exchange.

The bidder’s actions “severely impacted market order, hurt medium and small investors’ confidence in the market, and undermined fairness, justice and openness of the market,” the regulator said, according to the filing.

Zhao, Huang and Tibet Longwei could not be contacted for comment by phone. CSRC also could not be reached immediately for comment. Zhejiang Sunriver said in an emailed statement to Reuters it will “disclose information in a timely manner in accordance with law for any follow-up”.

The CSRC fined Zhao and Huang 300,000 yuan ($45,201.15) each, while Tibet Longwei Culture Media Co received a 600,000 yuan penalty.

Zhao and Huang built up an estimated 7 billion yuan in wealth through their investments, including early stakes in Alibaba Pictures Group, and were ranked 567 in the 2017 list of China’s richest compiled by the Hurun Report. (rtr)

JAKARTA - The Central Executive Board of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) selected the holiday of Kuningan (Nov 11) to announce their candidates for governor and deputy governor of Bali for the simultaneous regional leader election 2018. Chairperson of PDI-P Central Executive Board, Megawati Soekarnoputri, who led the coordination meeting, officially announced the pair of Bali’s gubernatorial candidates: I Wayan Koster and deputy governor candidate Tjokorda Oka Ardhana Sukawati (Cok Ace) for the 2018 Simultaneous Election to be held on June 27, 2018.

The announcement was made directly by Megawati at PDI-P’s office, Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Saturday (Nov. 11). The announcement was made through the submission of a recommendation letter that included a security mechanisms, in the form of print security and a security code.

Hundreds of PDI-P cadres from the executive branch of the central parliament, as well as provincial, district and regional PDI-P leaders from across Bali, and members of Bali’s House of Representatives’ electorate were present. The central executive officials in attendance included PDI-P Secretary-General Hasto Kristiyanto, Deputy Secretary General Eriko Sotarduga, Chairman of Central Executive Board Andreas Pareira, Bambang DH and I Made Urip. Many other PDI-P managers were also in attendance.

In her speech, Megawati sought the sincerity of the Balinese people to trust in relaying the leadership of the party to Koster or –Cok Ace of KBS (Koster Bali Satu or Koster Bali One) - “To the people, especially the people of Bali we request your prayers and blessings, please help me elect the two of them. I will close my eyes, I think Balinese people love me”, said Megawati.

This former president of Indonesia explained the reasons for electing KBS-Cok Ace. According to Megawati, other than qualifying in terms of academic background, they both also have experience as people’s representatives at the central and provincial levels.

Parliament works in partnership with the government; the central parliament works in partnership with the president and the ranks of his cabinet, while provincial

and district parliaments work in partnership with the governor and regents / mayor.

Megawati also said that Koster is smart. “He is small in stature and Javanese people says his appearance is inappropriate. However after seeing him myself, I see that he is as smart as a doctor, engineer and has a masters’ degree in management. His name is Wayan Koster” she said.

According to Megawati, the figure known as Cok Ace, is a cadre that has been well known for a long time. COk Ace first served as Regent of Gianyar for two periods in 2003-2008 and 2008-2013. He is also known as an academic. Cok

Ace is member of the Ubud Grand Palace family. “His father was the king of Ubud, and is legendary,” said Megawati.

Regarding Cok Ace’S academic background, Megawati said that she is impressed by his undergraduate degree in architecture. “ His Master’s and doctorate degrees, however are in literature and cultural studies. Beside, he graduated cum laude. He also dances a magical dance that not everyone can dance as it has particular rules governing it”, addded Mega.

In choosing a regional leader candidate, the first President of Indonesia Soekarno confirmed that election of a governor and his deputy must be based on their capabilities and track record and they must have experience in the legislature. “When someone wants to enter the political arena they must have a wealth of experience.

At the very least, they should have been a member of the House of Representatives, either at the district or provincial level. Its partners must be the provincial government as well as district / municipal gov-

ernments”, added Megawati.

An understanding of Soekarno’s teachings, she said is also important, she said. Megawati, emphasized that she considers it very important that the regional leaders elected by the PDI-P apply the concept of the Planned Universal Development System initiated by her father.

Targeting 65 percent of votes

I Wayan Koster as condidate for Governor of Bali aims to get at least 65 percent of the votes to occupy the seat of Bali 1 in the simultaneous regional leader election 2018. So far, the PDI-P candidates for governor and deputy governor of Koster Bali Satu—Cok Ace are communicating with a number of parties in order to strengthen their political power. “So far, we have been in talks with National Mandate Party (PAN) and National Awakening Party (PKB) and they both seem to be giving their support. We are still working towards creating a coalition” , said Koster.

In addition to communicating with a number of political parties,

Koster said that he and Cok Ace along with their supporting team will be making more frequent trips to different groups in the community in order to share their vision, mission and work program.

Koster said that he has been specifically assigned by Chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri to make the province of Bali province into a model of the application of the Planned Universal Development System initiated by President Soekarno.

This member of Commission X of the Central House of Representatives said the first step he is taking to conduct internal consolidation within the party. “In order to achieve this victory we must start by consolidating all levels of the party” he affirmed. Bali facing drug emergency The RAPID development of information technology is a double-edged sword. While having increasingly rapid access to information allow us access to greater knowledge and skills it also allows for access to information about social destructive things like, pornography, drugs, promiscuity, radicalism and terrorism. Due to global developments in information technologies, the youth are facing various threats. According to the Head of the Bali Provincial National Narcotic Agency (BNNP), Putu Gede Suastawa, drug abuse it is a multidimensional issue that involves many aspects of life. and thus poses a threat to the resilience of the nation. Drug abuse amongst young people, he added is on the rise.

“Such conditions are also present in Bali and if ignored can endanger the survival of our nation’s future generations.

Research by BNNP shows that in 2015 some 39 students were recorded as being addicted to drugs. Bali is thus ranked forth in the country”, he said on Saturday (Nov. 11).

The young generation, he said will become increasingly fragile is undermined by could pose a serious threat to the future of the nation. If the alarming rate at which young people are becoming shackled by drugs is not addressed immediately, we will be facing much bigger problems, said Suastawa. The rapid development of information technology are also giving rise to issues related to new narcotic substances known as New Psychoactive Substances (NPS).

“Therefore, the government has a program called ‘Welcoming the Golden Generation 2045’ Since the young generations are the future of the nation, they must be well prepared to represent the ideals of the nation” said Suastawa. When asked if Bali was currently facing a drug emergency, he affirmed that there were some 62, 457 cases of drug abuse in 2017, or to put it simply – yes things are critical. The average age of drug abusers is between 21-47 and include officials, middlemanagement, well established people and other people with important roles in organizations.

“The fact has been proven again. It is not only people in the hospitality industry or the business sector but bureaucrats and members of parliament are also using drugs. Legislators in Tabanan and in Bali’s provincial government have been involved in drug cases”, he said.

When asked about the number of government officials in Bali that are using illicit drugs, this this one-star general said that all levels of society are subject to problems with drug abuse – including government officials and wealthy people..

Moreover, Bali is an easy target for drugs as indicated by the presence of drug production centers here and the number of people who have been prosecuted for drug related crimes.

This is further aggravated by rampant smuggling of drugs into Bali, ranging from ecstasy (reaching tens of thousands of pills), crystal meth, marijuana, flakka and blue sapphire.

“This problem needs to be addressed by everyone working together as Bali is a promising target for drug syndicated. It is a tantalizing target because there is a demand, so suppliers are happy. Currently 60 percent of drug cases in Bali involve Balinese people whether as dealers, or users”, he added.

Suastawa explained that many people turn to drugs looking for fun even though such goods have already been declared to be hazardous. People are misguidedly looking for pleasure and escape from the realities of life. In fact people are slowly killing themselves and many people have already died form drug use. IN Indonesia, about 50 people a day die from drug abuse whiel in Bali 2 – 3 people a day die from drug abuse.

Suastawa, explained that in order to save Balinese people from deadly substances the BNNP Bali has been taking various steps in terms of prevention, discipline and addict recovery. Such efforts have been reinforced by the issuance of the circular of Ministry of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform No.50/2017 dated October 11 and Regional Regulation No.7/2017. Both laws instruct government agencies to conduct urine tests every six months to check for drug use.

“We in Bali responded to this issue early on. In fact urine tests amongst legislators has given rise to debate. Since I insisted it was implemented. The Circular of the Minister of Manpower and Transmigration and Regional Regulation should be obeyed and enforced. Besides, there is also a program in place and pecalang (customary guards) have been trained as anti-drug volunteers and pararem (addendum to customary village laws) have been created. Such effrots however will amount to nothing is we all not all committed to these efforts.

basis for protecting Bali. Volunteers pecalang, anti-drug activists, programs and rehabilitation centers will also be strengthened. The budget for making in Bali has also been doubled by the BNN as this is considered a successful way of disclosing such cases.

Chief of Bali Police, Dr. Petrus Reinhard Golose, has repeatedly expressed his commitment to minimizing the potential of Balinese people getting involved in drugs by promoting local wisdom. He wants to help support pecalang and to work together to prevent widespread drug abuse on the Island of the Gods.. “About 60 to 70 percent of drug couriers are Balinese.

I am therefore trying to bring this number down so that Bali will not become damaged any further. Since I became Chief of the Bali Police, I have formed the CTOT Taskforce, and one of their functions is to fight against narcotics”, he said.

Golose said that he always emphasizes to his personnel that they should not get involved in drugs and that they should not even consider things like stamina enhancers and so forth as part of their lifestyle. Anyone who does use drugs, said Golose will be ordered to leave the police institution. This, he said is for the sake of Bali’s younger generation. “Information technology can help them get drugs” he added.

More and more evidence is showing that drugs pose a serious threat to the future of the nation. “ I invite everyone to commit themselves to staying away form drugs. Together we can eradicate the root of this problem. Hopefully the younger generation as the backbone of this country can be protected from drug abuse” he said.

There has been a quantitative increase in the demand for narcotics in Bali so dealers see this as a very promising market.

The public is often exposed to false information about drug abuse through lectures, brochures and interactive platforms on electronic media. (rah)

Customary villages must be involved in prevention hope that customary villages authorities can participate in drug prevention by creating addenda to customary laws”, explained Sudyatmaja.

The need for the involvment of customary village authorities was confrimed by the Chief of the BNNP Bali, Putu Gede Suastawa, during a public discussion on the Prevention and Eradication of Drug Abuse and Illicit Circulation (P4GN) in the district of Klungkung. Drug prevention, he added also needs the strategic support of trained volunteers involving pecalang and customary villages “There has been a lot of rhetoric and advocacy, but what is the result? Well, we have established teams of volunteers through the P4GN involving pecalang in each customary village. Customary villages also needs to make addenda to theirs customary village bylaw. Sekaa Taruna or customary youth club should also be involved in prevention”, he said.

Volunteers have the authority to monitor and inspect places that are vulnerable to drug trafficking such as boarding houses and night clubs (though they should be accompanied by chief of customary villages). Any people found to be on

drugs should be taken to hospital or directed to rehabilitation programs. Similarly, they should be supported with continuous supervision and assistance. “People are still in doubt about what to do, but with time they should no longer be. Direct involvement of the community can give birth to confidence”, he said.

Deputy Regent of Klungkung, I Made Kasta, who is also Chairman of the District Narcotic Agency (BNK) of Klungkung, stated that prevention measures have been made by giving information to villages every week. He added that he hopes this information can spread to other communities. “ The BNK regularly provides information to communities” he said.

Chief of Klungkung’s Customary Village Middle Assembly (MMDP), I Ketut Rupia Arsana, declared that adding addenda to customary village bylaws related to drug use is a response to the appeal by the chief of the Klungkung Police and is meant to prevent drug abuse. “Hopefully, this appeal will be followed up on by all our villages. We will be summoning each village to see if they have such an addendum or not” affirmed Arsana. (kmb45)

Increasing widespread drug use

SEMARAPURA - Drug abuse remains a serious issue in this country and the people of Klungkung are facing this problem is a serious way. Between Febuary and November 6th of this year, Klungkung Police’s Narcotics Investigation Unit arrested 22 in drug related cases. This number is up form the 16 that were arrested in 2016. Only one of these people is recorded as originating from outside of Bali and only one was underage. “It is mostly Balinese people who are perpetrators and mist of them are drug users rather than dealers”, said Chief of Bali Police Narcotic Investigation Unit, I Gede Sudyatmaja, recently.

Because Klungkung is at the crossroads of several districts and many of its residence are mobile, access to drugs is more open to people here. This problem is also exacerbated an increasing tendency amongst young people towards a pleasure seeking lifestyle.

Klungkung Police’s have been taking steps to overcome this problem through such measures as raiding places considered to be prone to drug trafficking and by informing customary villages about the threat of drugs. “ We also

Rock ‘N Run now in it’s 17th year, is an annual charity event organized by Hard Rock Hotel Bali in-line with the Hard Rock mantra: “Take Time To Be Kind”. It was

another successful year with more than 1200 runners participating in this charity 5km fun run and another 300 people made donations of support.

The 5km race was won by Samgar with a super quick time of 16:37. Putu Andika was a close second at 16:48 and Gregorius finished third with a time of 17:30. Ella Barrat was the first female with a time of 19:42, second was Ni Kadek Ayu Sukarniti at 21:00 and third was Cita with 21:08. The Simrons won the Family Category, while Elle from IndoRunners Bali won the Best Costume category.

According to him, family as the closest institution should take the main responsibility to supervise other family members. While the institutions such as the BNN and police are assigned by the state to eradicate and protect the public from drug hazards. It must be active and more intensive to do prevention and prosecution to community.

This member of Bangli House of Representatives for the period of 2004-2019 is very supportive of urine test program held by the authorities to prevent and detect the existence of drug abuse in several government agencies and other institutions. Australia has 240 named native species of frog, and the museum wants to use its FrogID app to identify what it believes are dozens more still ribbiting under the radar.

“One of the cool things about this is you can survey frogs just by listening,” said Jodi Rowley, the museum’s curator of amphibian and reptile conservation biology.

“It’s actually a lot more accurate than photos, and photos encourage people to handle or disturb frogs,” Rowley added. She noted that ev-

While frog populations are in decline around the world, Australia’s frogs are especially vulnerable because of a combination of climate change, pollution, introduced species and urban development, the country’s Department of Environment and Energy says.

“It might allow us to figure out

which areas of suburbia are really good for frogs, why they are good and hopefully help create more frog friendly habitats in suburbia,” she said.

Rowley said amateurs who record previously unknown frog calls may even help discover a new type of frog or determine if any introduced species have gone unnoticed.

Head of the Provincial National Narcotic Agency (BNNP) Bali, Putu Gede Suastawa, said on Wednesday (Nov. 8) the suspects had allegedly ordered marijuana twice from Aceh, lured by the profits they could make selling the illicit goods. Their supplier in Aceh was allegedly a 28 year old with the initials DW and then the thrid package was sent to Bali it was intercepted by police officers who seized the eight packages of marijuana each weighing 965 grams. “We started looking into this case after being tipped off by a concerned member of society” explained Suastawa on Wednesday (Nov. 8).

The case was successfully revealed due to the work of the Eradication Team of the BNNP Bali led by Eradication Division Head Ketut Arta accompanied by the Intelligence Section Head Saifudin Jupri. “The marijuana package was sent to the alleged perpetrator Jarot’s boarding house”, he said.

As soon as the suspect Jarot received the package,

the officers arrested him. The marijuana was packed in jar containing turmeric powder on top of the eight marijuana packages. “That way, when the jar was opened, at first glance it would appear to contain spices.

The jar contained eight packages” said Jupri.

The officers then searched Jarot’s boarding house but found no other evidence. During the interrogation of the alleged perpetrator, Jarot said that the goods belonged to Robi and that he he had only let Robi use his address.

Robi was then lured to the crime scene around 21:00 after the Achenes suspect was told that his package he had ordered had arrived. As soon as he entered Jarots’ boarding house, Robi was arrested. The officers then found 41.29 grams of marijuana and two other packages of 6.65 grams of marijuana stored in a pack of cigarettes in his bag.

The officers investigated further and finally searched Robi’s boarding house on Jalan Raya Padonan, Badung where they found five more packages of marijuana stored in a brown box set in the bathroom. “We secured eight packages and then five packages of marijuana, for a total of 5 kilograms”, he explained.

Jupri confirmed that both suspects were not just couriers but part of the Acehnese drug syndicates becoming dealers in Bali. As a result of their actions, both suspects are threatened with a maximum sentence of death penalty or life imprisonment. “We are charging them under Article 114 paragraph 2 or Article 111 paragraph 2 of Law No. 35/2009 on the narcotic crimes”, he said. Looking for generation to preserve cagcag weaving

ONE of the handicraft products of Jembrana district is cagcag woven cloth. Gradually, this weaving craft began to develop. Now, the weavers dominated by women begin to feel the impact of the traditional weaving production after years of crisis. The old cagcag looms formerly ignored in the houses are now revived.

But behind it, the handicrafts having been passed down and pursued by the people especially at Sangkaragung village in Jembrana is threatened and displaced by imported textiles. Of the existing weavers, they are dominated by old women. Only a few young people wish to learn this cagcag weaving.

“Actually, today is easy to get yarn (raw material) and the buyers are available. So, we work for days do not feel fatigue,” said Ketut Sunari, 43, a weaver of songket cagcag from Sangkaragung village, some time ago.

However, amid the increasingly brighter prospect of production, she still has a concern, namely regarding the regeneration. The current situation is much different from the time before, where every girl began to get involved in this craft. Moreover, for her school tuition, Sunari highly depended on the sales of weaving products. Now, due to contamination of modernization, it is very difficult to accustom girls to this weaving works.

To preserve this weaving craft, the regeneration must be done. “Today, there are many generations of mine and women here are weaving cagcag clothes. But, I do not know how the regeneration will be,” she explained.

Cagcag weaving is a quite old tradition owned by the people of Jembrana. Using wooden looms is simple enough but complicated, thus requires the weavers’ persistence. This handicraft develops at a number of old villages in Jembrana, such as Batuagung and Sangkaragung. Long enough process and the need of precision make these clothes have high enough value.

Due to having many versions, this weaving craft are named cagcag. The most commonly understood by the elders, the cagcag is the onomatopoeic clashing sound of wood with wood in the weaving process.

Currently, the weavers adequately feel the difference in terms of the results compared to last crisis because this craft can give her income. Sunari having pursued this work since the age of 7 years has ever felt

the difficulty of getting threads and marketing channels. Her craft business is indeed quite small, even she runs herself and initially served as a side job. But after her husband died from an accident, Sunari relied on the income from weaving with typical motive of Jembrana.

At Sangkaragung village, almost all housewives have cagcag weaving skills. During the last crisis, many housewives left this craft work and chose to work in paddy fields or take odd works. Their wooden cagcag looms inherited from their ancestors are still stored but some are already damaged. Since Sangkaragung becomes the center for cagcag weaving handicraft, the looms again develops.

Moreover, some housewives make new looms, but not a few remains to use the looms of tens of years old, including her loom. Cagcag songket clothes are indeed much different from the other songket and require perseverance in the process. A piece of songket cagcag sizing two meters (maximum) will take her at least three days, chiefly for the easy motive such as star moon, sowing flowers and so forth. No wonder, the price of this cloth can reach IDR 800,000 to IDR 1.2 million.

Price hike of raw materials (yarn) does not make the weavers disappointed because the marketing is also encouraging. For marketing, Sangkaragung has currently owned a gallery with the help of one of the banking companies. For marketing to capital matters, the weavers are also given assistance. Sunari hoped the unique handicrafts of Jembrana can continuously develop and take root. So, when people call Jembrana, cagcag weaving will get attached to the icon or souvenir.

One of the young generations pursuing this weaving tradition can be found at Batuagung, exactly at Sawe hamlet. At a young age, Desak Kembarina has started to pursue this art of weaving after quitting elementary school. This work has been doing since the age of 12 years. At a glance, her house will not indicate any cagcag weaving activities. Kembarina confessed to weaving at her leisure time. When doing other activities, the loom is put into the house. There are only a few of generations like Kembarina. She claimed to pursue this work because of the necessities of life to increase income. (olo)

A local merchant, Nengah Parwata, acknowledged that transactions of online shopping have indeed become a trend in the society, especially among the younger generation as considered to be more practical. Buyers no longer have to come to the market. The goods ordered are directly delivered to consumers. However, it does not make him worried about his business to go bankrupt because of losing competitiveness. “Until now, it stays normal and has no impact. Our sales are still the same as before the presence of online shopping,” he said.

Bahrain calls pipeline blast “terrorism” linked to Iran

KHOBAR - Bahrain said an explosion which caused a fire at its main oil pipeline on Friday was caused by “terrorist” sabotage, linking the unprecedented attack to its arch-foe Iran, which denies any role in the Gulf island kingdom’s unrest.

A key Western ally and host to the U.S. Fifth Fleet, Sunni Muslim-ruled Bahrain has for years grappled with protests and sporadic violence coming from its Shi’ite majority.

“The incident was an act of sabotage and a dangerous act of terrorism aimed at harming the higher interests of the nation and the safety of the people,” the interior ministry said on its website.

“Terrorist acts witnessed by the country in the recent period are carried out through direct contacts and instructions from Iran,” the statement quoted Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid bin Abdullah alKhalifa as saying.

In Tehran, Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi rejected the allegations as “false talk and childish accusations”, the ministry said on its website.

Bahraini authorities said they had brought under control the fire at the oil pipeline.

State-run Bahrain Petroleum Company (Bapco) closed the flow of oil to the stricken pipeline, the civil defence said in a statement earlier on Saturday.

Residents close to the incident near Buri village, some 15 kilometres (10 miles) from the capital Manama, were being evacuated to a

safe shelter, the statement added.

Saudi Arabia’s energy ministry said pumping to Bahrain had been suspended and the kingdom was stepping up security precautions at its own facilities.

“The attack on the pipeline ... was followed by the suspension of the pumping of oil to the State of Bahrain,” the Saudi Ministry of Energy, Industry and Mineral Resources said.

“The Ministry of Energy also confirmed that it has increased its security precautions at all its facilities, and that all these facilities enjoy the highest levels of protection and safety,” it added in a statement.

After authorities quashed Shi’ite-led “Arab Spring” protests in 2011, militants have launched deadly bombing and shooting attacks against security forces that Manama blames on Tehran.

Iran denies any role in Bahrain’s unrest.

Bahrain relies on the Abu Safa oilfield for the majority of its oil. It shares the field with Saudi Arabia.

Oil to Bahrain is transported via the 55 km A-B pipeline which has a capacity of 230,000 barrels per day (bpd).

A new 350,000-bpd oil pipeline between the two countries will be completed next year and will serve the planned expansion of Bahrain’s refinery capacity.

Arabian Light crude oil will flow from Saudi Aramco’s Abqaiq plant via the 115-km new pipeline, 73 km of which will run overland and the rest under the Gulf. (rtr)

SYDNEY - Australia’s Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on Sunday said he would discuss North Korea and Islamist terrorism as threats to regional stability, ahead of his arrival at an East Asia leaders’ summit in the Philippines.

North Korea was a criminal regime and the single largest threat to the region, Turnbull told a televised news conference in Hong Kong.

“They are very cunning operators,” he said, urging a tightening of economic sanctions.

Islamist terrorism in the southern Philippines is the other key security issue Turnbull aims to discuss with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte in Manila.

Australia said in September it would send troops to train Philippines armed forces engaged in a 154-day battle with Islamic State fighters in the southern city of Marawi, in the country’s biggest security crisis in decades.

Turnbull stressed the importance of help by Indonesian President Joko Widodo in defusing Islamist

extremism as the leader of the world’s largest Muslimmajority country, which is also a democracy.

“He speaks with great authority when he says Islam is compatible with democracy and moderation,” Turnbull added. “He’s a powerful voice for moderation in the region.”

Australia’s embattled prime minister will attend the high-powered regional summit at the same time as a citizenship crisis at home has destroyed the parliamentary majority of his ruling centre-right coalition.

The subject? “Challenges and opportunities of central bank communication.” Curve-flattening on both sides of the Atlantic, but more markedly in the United States, suggests investors have doubts over the future path of inflation and may be starting to price in a downturn just as the global economy picks up speed. Since the Fed began raising rates in 2015, the difference between long- and short-term U.S. yields has shrunk to levels not seen since before the 2008 financial crisis, reaching 67 basis points -- its flattest in a decade -- in the past week.

That partly reflects uncertainty about the passage of a Republican-sponsored bill to cut U.S. taxes, which has hauled down longer-term projections of inflation while expectations for upcoming rate increases push short-term yields higher.

With curve-flattening typically signalling a muted outlook for both growth and inflation, the trend suggests investors see a risk that the Fed’s current monetary tightening cycle will start to slow the world’s biggest economy.

A flatter curve, which makes lending less profitable, also poses a risk to the banking sector, nursed back to fragile health by central banks after it nearly collapsed a decade ago.

But with crisis-era policies still largely in place, how would central banks cushion the impact of a downturn?

But with a number of Fed vacancies to be filled, analysts at ING say the policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee could yet take on a hawkish hue. “The combination of upside risks to growth and mounting inflationary pressures, as well as a hawkish rotation in the make-up of Fed voters, suggests that markets are too cautious in only pricing in one (rate) hike next year,” they wrote.

Under his leadership the Fed is widely expected to continue to raise borrowing costs gradually, as Yellen began to do in late 2015, and to shrink the central bank’s $4.5 trillion balance sheet. It has raised rates twice this year and is widely expected to do so again -- to a target range of 1.25 to 1.5 percent -- next month. Investors in Europe are also focused

on potential future price growth, although the European Central Bank’s more accommodative stance means a different dynamic for bond markets.

The hunt for returns drove the German yield curve, Europe’s benchmark, to its flattest in about two months in the past week, though that trend was reversed on Thursday and Friday. Market measures of long-term inflation expectations in the bloc have risen in recent months but remain well below the ECB’s near-2-percent target, giving funds confidence that the value of those investments will not be materially eroded.

The ECB’s decision last month to extend its asset purchase programme until at least September and pledge to keep rates at record lows until well after that scheme ends have helped push bond yields across the bloc to multi-month lows.

The European Commission said on Thursday that it expected the euro zone economy to grow at its fastest pace in a decade this year before slowing somewhat. A flash estimate of third-quarter GDP in the euro area will be released on Tuesday and October’s inflation reading on Thursday. A clutch of other Fed policymakers will also be out and about, while Draghi, Kuroda and Carney are all due to make speeches during the week. (rtr)

S&P Global Ratings said in the past week that it sees a 15-20 percent risk of a U.S. recession in the next 12 months based on economic conditions, government policy uncertainty and continued gradual tightening by the Fed. Citing economic indicators that show the expansion is either in or approaching a late cycle -- though not overheating -- it forecast robust GDP growth in the second half of 2017.

“Still, monetary policy risk remains in the coming months that is not captured in our quantitative assessment,” S&P said.

“The economy has now more or less closed the output gap ...That means monetary policy is more likely to transition away from the current accommodative stance. “Furthermore, if a sizeable fiscal stimulus from the U.S. government is to indeed go through in the coming months, it increases the chance of the Fed tightening policy more aggressively.”

Looking to Balinese wisdom for sunstainable solutions

Rwa Bhineda is the Balinese concept of the opposing forces that together allow for harmony. The black and white checkered cloth used in Bali’s religious contexts and beyond is one example of how this concept is symbolized, though as the the backdrop of reality, Rwa Bineda is found expressed in countless forms throughout nature and culture. Another way to understand this concept is in the cycles of nature: without night there is no day and without the salty corrosive ocean there would be no refreshing rain.

Segara-Gunung is another Balinese concept that literally translates as ‘oceanmountain’ and is intimately tied to the broader Rwa Bnineda but on a human scale.

Segara-gunung can be interpreted in a variety of ways including as a shorthand for the cycle of water that rains down in the mountains, giving life to all along its journey and taking with it all that it not needed to be finally flushed out to sea where it is purified by the great expansive sea and then evaporates back up into clouds that rain down again. As Jero Gede Tindih from Songan, Kintamani explained in a recent discussion on the topic: “Mount Agung and Lake Batur also make up a kind of pair of opposites and as such are deeply honoured for their potency and the role that they each play in maintaining harmony”.

Long before the Javanese arrived in Bali the indigenous people of Bali lived on the shores of Lake Batur and consider the goddess of the lake to be one of their ancestors. According to legend, long long ago twins were born from two deities, the divine twins were married and bore 4 sons and a daughter. The four family lineages of the people of Lake Batur are descendants of the four sons while the daughter became the Goddess of the Lake -Dewi Danau, explained Jero Tindih.

Today people from all over Bali also honour this Lake as a divine source of fertility and abundance, and tens of thousands of people come to pray at the temple by the lakeshore to pay homage and pray for blessings. Last August a giant statue of Dewi Danau was erected on the shore of the Lake in honour of her magnificence and though not directly related to the temple, this statue is a reminder to honour the lake both physically and spiritually. The government of Bangli has also been doing their part to honour the lake.

As previously reported by Bali Post (Oct. 30), the regency of Bangli’s Agricultural Agency in collaboration with experts from Udayana University’s Faculty of Fisheries are in the process of conducting a sustainability study regarding the numerous fish farms in the lake to determine how many cages should be there, where they should be placed and how they should operate. As also reported by Bali Post ( Nov. 6) even Bangli’s military district is playing a role in honouring the lake. On November 5th, they took part in a mass garbage clean-up along with local residents along the lakeshore in the village.

Similar mass clean-ups have been done by other communities along the lake recently both in honour of the eco-system as well as to prepare the area for tourism development.

Jero Cintah (or Jero CIn as he is known) is a onion farmer and fishermen from Songan who took part in one of these recent cleanups and was so taken aback by the amount of garbage that he started to think of ways to deal with the large volume of plastic waste in his village. “Yes me and a visiting artist friend from Java have been experimenting with melting down the plastic. We finally found a way to melt a huge amount of plastic into a liquid that when cooled becomes a kind of dense concrete. We poured this liquid into two moulds -one of a fish and the other a simple brick. I am really excited about the possibilities”, he explained, saying that he hopes to create a production and learning centre on part of his land.

“We already have a place to store large amounts of plastic garbage, the technic for melting it down, and lots of ideas about what this new material can be used for. This project could make a huge contribution to the plastic waste problem and also to our local creative economy, but we need the government to be onboard, because they have the authority and responsibility for collecting waste”, said Jero Cin. He added that he hopes to gain government support for the project that would require both co-operation and funding for some simple equipment so that he and other villagers can start producing this plastic concrete.

“We managed to figure out the right formula but clearly these tin pots are not strong enough to handle the heat”, he said laughing hardily as he pointing to two large pots that had massive holes in their bottoms. He added that private parties are most welcome to join forces but added that government support is still needed for technical matters.

When asked about the sulphuric burst from the bottom of the lake that killed so many fish a few months back, Jero Cintah explained that sulphuric bursts were caused by the large deposits of garbage at the bottom of the lake that do not allow for the sulfur to slowly disperse in to the lake as usual, so instead the sulfur accumulates and then erupts violently. When the experts from Udayana University approached him about their study, he told them that he hopes they do more than just study the problem and that real efforts are made to remove the garbage from the bottom of the lake.

Jero Cintah also responded to the recent clean-up in Buahan with a little disappointment saying that he thought it was strange that after collecting the garbage they brought some of it to a nearby land-fill and burned the rest on the lakeshore. “I already talked to the former village head of Buahan about our plastic concrete project. I also spoke to a member of the Bangli military district about it. I am not sure why they are ignoring this golden opportunity. Maybe they are confused about how to make the change.

One thing I know is that, if we want to really clean up this area, we are going to have all work together on implementing real solutions. If we want tourists to come and enjoy a clean lakeshore area doing mass cleanups every few months is really not enough- have you seen all the garbage in the area? We need serious solutions, based on real incentives and organized systems”, said Jero Cintah as he went back to sorting his onions.

While plastic garbage is a relatively new problem it has quickly become a pervasive one. Perhaps by looking to the concept of Rwa Bineda a more harmonious solution can be found. Like all things in nature, plastic too must be given a place where it can be a contributing factor to harmony instead off a disruption to harmony.

While Balinese traditions address other potentially harmful forces of nature with a kind of reverence for their due place in maintaining overall harmony, plastic seems to have not yet made its way into this lexicon.

Instead plastic is still shunned, ignored or shuffled off to where it cannot be seen. But as with other forces of nature, it too must be given suitable attention and acknowledged as part of the cycle of nature, explained the Javanese artist working with Jero Cintah, who is embracing plastic as one embraces a new friend.

Otherwise, the harmonious cycle of water as the primary sustainer of life, flowing down from the mountain and eventually out to the ocean and back into the clouds that rain down on the mountain, will continue to be disrupted and will certainly have increasingly catastrophic consequences for us all. As one local priest said: “Hopefully the beauty of Dewi Danau shining in all her splendour on the lakeshore now will serve as a inspiration for all related parties not just for her beauty and grace but also for what needs to be done to restore the harmony of this important natural cycle that she represents”. “Dump Trump” protest erupts ahead of Philippines summit

MANILA - Riot police used water canon to prevent hundreds of protesters reaching the U.S. embassy in Manila on Sunday, just a few hours before the arrival of President Donald Trump in the Philippines for a regional summit and the last leg of his Asia tour.

Carrying placards declaring “Dump Trump” and “Down with U.S. Imperialism”, the left-wing protesters were blocked by police in riot gear with shields and batons, and then showered with jets of water from a fire engine.

“Trump is the CEO of the imperialist government of the US, said 18-year-old student Alexis Danday after the protesters were scattered. “We know he is here to push for unfair treaties between the Philippines and the U.S.” Trump was expected to arrive in the Philippines at around 5 p.m. (0900 GMT) for meetings with leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and other East Asian nations, fresh off an Asia-Pacific summit and bilateral visit in Vietnam.

In Hanoi earlier on Sunday, Trump said he was prepared to mediate between claimants to the South China Sea, where four ASEAN countries and Taiwan contest China’s sweeping claims to the busy waterway.

“If I can help mediate or arbitrate, please let me know,” Trump said at a meeting with Vietnam’s president, Tran Dai Quang. “I’m a very good mediator and arbitrator.”

In August, foreign ministers of Southeast Asia and China adopted a negotiating framework for a code of conduct in the South China Sea, a move they hailed as progress but one seen by critics as a tactic to buy China time to consolidate its power.

The framework seeks to advance a 2002 Declaration of Conduct (DOC) of Parties in the South China Sea, which has mostly been ignored by claimant states,

President Jokowi, Prime Minister Turnbull meet in Vietnam

The Philippines will be Trump’s last stop on a marathon tour that has taken him to Japan, South Korea, China as well as Vietnam. Despite Trump’s “America First” policy, the visit should provide some reassurance that Washington remains committed to a region that Beijing sees as its strategic domain.

The increasing use of the phrase “Indo-Pacific” by Trump and his team during their Asian tour this week, instead of the more common “Asia-Pacific” term has been seen by analysts as an effort to depict the region as more than China-dominated.

Pacific Rim nation leaders agreed in Vietnam on Saturday to address “unfair trade practices” and “market distorting subsidies”, a statement that bore the imprint of Trump’s efforts to reshape the global trade landscape.

The summit of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) countries in Vietnam put on show the contrasting vision of the “America First” policy with the traditional consensus favouring multinational deals that China now seeks to champion.

Trump will meet Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte in Manila, where he will try to shore up relations strained by the mercurial Duterte’s notorious anti-U.S. sentiment and his enthusiasm for better ties with Russia and China.

Others who will be in Manila for the summit meetings include Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and leaders from Japan, Canada, South Korea, India, Australia, New Zealand as well as the member states of ASEAN. (rtr)

Protesters flood Barcelona demanding release of separatist leaders

BARCELONA - Hundreds of thousands of Catalan independence supporters clogged one of Barcelona’s main avenues on Saturday to demand the release of separatist leaders held in prison for their roles in the region’s banned drive to split from Spain.

Wearing yellow ribbons on their lapels to signify support, they filled the length of the Avenue Marina that runs from the beach to Barcelona’s iconic Sagrada Familia church, while the jailed leaders’ families made speeches.

Catalonia’s two main grassroots independence groups called the march, under the slogan “Freedom for the political prisoners,” after their leaders were remanded in custody on charges of sedition last month.

The protest is seen as a test of how the independence movement’s support has fared since the Catalan government declared independence on Oct. 27, prompting Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to fire its members, dissolve the regional parliament and call new elections for December.

An opinion poll this week showed that pro-independence parties would win the largest share of the vote, though a majority was not assured and question marks remain over ousted regional head Carles Puigdemont’s leadership of

the separatist cause.

“Look at all the people here,” said 63-year-old Pep Morales. “The independence movement is still going strong.”

Barcelona police said about 750,000 people had attended, many from across Catalonia. The protesters carried photos with the faces of those in prison, waved the red-and-yellow striped Catalan independence flag and shone lights from their phones.

The Spanish High Court has jailed eight former Catalan government members, along with the leaders of the Catalan National Assembly (ANC) and Omnium Cultural, while investigations continue.

The High Court last week issued arrest warrants on charges of rebellion and sedition for Puigdemont, who flew to Brussels after being deposed, and four other former government members who went with him.

“Your light reaches us in Brussels and illuminates the path we must keep following,” Puigdemont tweeted during the protest.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court ruled to release on bail the Catalan parliament’s speaker Carme Forcadell and four other lawmakers, who enabled the declaration of independence by overseeing a parlia mentary vote. Another lawmaker was released without bail. (rtr)

Indonesia loses WTO appeal in food fight with New Zealand, US

GENEVA - Indonesia lost an appeal ruling at the World Trade Organization on Thursday in a dispute with the United States and New Zealand over Indonesia’s restrictions on imports of food and animal products including beef and poultry.

Indonesia had argued that its rules were based on health concerns

and halal food standards, or aimed to deal with temporary surpluses in the domestic market. In December 2016, a panel of adjudicators faulted Indonesia, which appealed.

An Indonesian trade ministry official said the government would study the ruling before easing any restrictions, which cover products such as apples, grapes, potatoes,

onions, flowers, juice, dried fruit, cattle, chicken and beef.

“The Indonesian government will study and conduct internal coordination related to the recently circulated Appellate Body Report, including its implications for current regulations,” Oke Nurwan, Indonesia’s director general of foreign trade, told Reuters. (rtr)

Royal Palace of Buleleng

SINGARAJA - There is a special atmosphere about the city of Singaraja (small town, really) which speaks of a different history to the old kingdoms of south Bali.

You notice it immediately as you drive or stroll through many old Dutch buildings (Indonesia was a Dutch colony), a Moorish looking mosque, Dutch church, Chinese temple, crowded Chinese shophouses, the even more cramped and crowded central bazaar, the broad apron of open space at the shore in front of the city, its warehouses and customs house suggestive of a once busy port.

Indeed, until Bali’s international airport opened at Kuta in the 1960s Singaraja was not only a port but Bali’s capital.

And in its social if not physical centre can be found the royal palace of Buleleng.

All the elements above are still there but until recently cloaked in faded glory which Bali’s booming economy is only beginning to dispel today.

Buleleng Palace is different from any other in Bali in that it does not follow Majapahit prescriptions for its layout.

(Majapahit is the 14th century Javanese kingdom from which most Balinese royal families trace their descent.)

The reason is a sad one. The colonial Dutch fought the rulers and people of Buleleng to total defeat culminating in their last stand at the fortress of Jagaraga, east of Singaraja and a site today marked by a temple. The venerable palace dating from the 17th century was destroyed.

It was rebuilt in the early 19th century by Anak Agung Putu Djelantik who took the quite sensible view that since walls hadn’t saved the palace from the Dutch there was no point in building any more.

Instead, the palace is a network of interlocking open courtyards entered by tall gates emblazoned with the owner’s name ‘Djelentik’ - a name which for the ‘trouble’ the family gave the Dutch must have been burned indelibly on the brains of the conquerors.

Today, the century old palace has a distinctly quaint feel to its quiet quadrangles fringed by single-storey houses with open verandahs.

The grandest house, furnished and decorated in the European style of the time’s clearly the king’s and smaller apartments are equally clearly for family members and retainers.

Although few members of the family live there, the palace still manages to exude a lived in feeling, perhaps because it continues to host community activities and temple ceremonies.

Beside a sense of quaint cosiness there is a sense of grandeur in the statues dotting the compounds which seem to tell us that we have arrived at an important place - a palace fit for a king.

The Buleleng princes don’t rule any more in this era of democracy in Indonesia but, as befits the family which built the first ‘visitor’ accommodation at nearby Lovina Beach,

it occasionally stages events and performances at the palace to which tourists are sometimes invited.

A few years ago there was even a Buleleng Palace Festival which swept out of the palace and through the town with a colourful parade of musicians and dancers.

But, as at Pemecutan in Denpasar, above all it is the strong sense of history which dominates your visit to the palace the portraits of the old rajas, ancient weapons, furnishings of bygone styles.

Some of the family still in residence speak fluent English and a talk with Anak Agung Ngurah Brawida, the younger brother of the crown prince, is to be able to walk down the meandering lanes of 400 years of history as if the events happened yesterday.

As Bali palaces go, Buleleng impresses for its uniqueness and originality and the grandeur of buildings which seem to provoke the visitor response: ‘Wow! So this is how the princes lived.’

I was present at the Buleleng Palace Festival and hundreds of townspeople and villagers were mobilized in colourful displays of music and dance.

I had been aware of palace festivals on the adjacent island of Java throughout the 1990s but it was at Buleleng that I first began to ask myself why there wasn’t and if there could be a festival of Bali palaces to give us all a glimpse of life behind Balinese palace walls while there is still time. FRESNO - In a showdown between undefeated junior welterweight contenders, Jose Ramirez (21-0, 16 KOs) blasted out Mike Reed (23-1, 12 KOs) in two rounds.

A crowd of 14,000 came out to support Ramirez, who is one of the hottest ticket sellers in the West Coast.

Ramirez will now face Amir Imam for the vacant WBC junior welterweight title. The title became vacant after Terence Crawford announced that he was moving up to the welterweight limit of 147pounds.

The World Boxing Council announced at their recent convention, that Ramirez and Imam would have to fight each other for the title. Imam was in action on the undercard and picked up a quick TKO win.

Ramirez was letting his hands go from the jump, with his punches targeting the body of Reed. There was also good work by Reed in the early going, and he was showing his speed and landing decent counters.

In the second, Ramirez really let his hands go after stunning Reed and sent him down to the mat.

Reed made it up, but he was being demolished against the ropes by Ramirez and not throwing anything back - which forced the referee to

jump in and wave off the fight.

Also on the card, the vacant IBF light heavyweight world title was captured by Artur Beterbiev (12-0, 12 KOs), who nearly went the distance, but scored two knockdowns in the twelfth and final round to stop Enrico Koelling (23-2, 6 KOs) The fight was originally set as a world title eliminator. But it was changed after the belt became vacant, after Andre Ward announced his retirement a few months ago.

Beterbiev is currently in a legal battle with promoter Yvon Michel of GYM in Canada. If he’s able to break his promotional contract, Beterbiev is expected to sign with Top Rank.

As part of the undercard, Imam (21-1, 18KOs) stopped Johnny Garcia (19-6-1) in four rounds.

Imam dominated the fight and dropped Garcia in the fourth round.

The referee felt Garcia had taken too much damage during the four rounds and stopped the fight before the start of the fight.

This was Imam’s third win and third stoppage in a row, since suffering an upset stoppage loss to Adrian Granados in November 2015. The unexpected loss was a huge setback, because at the time of that loss Imam was the WBC’s mandatory challenger to then champion Viktor Postol. (IBP/net)

Chung, 21, was outplayed in the first set and was 3-1 behind in the second set before taking over to win 3-4(5) 4-3(2) 4-2 4-2 to go through the five-day roundrobin tournament unbeaten.

A high-quality final full of sublime ball-striking was a fitting end to a promising debut for an event which has experimented with a range of innovations such as shorts sets, ‘sudden-death’ deuces and on-court coaching.

The 20-year-old Rublev, at 37th the highest-ranked qualifier for the event restricted to players aged 21 and under, lost his cool as the relentless Chung turned the match around.

But the Muscovite showed tremendous resolve to survive a deciding point deuce, effectively match point, when serving at 1-3 in the fourth set, winning a ferocious baseline exchange.

The 54th-ranked Chung showed his first sign of nerves when he double-faulted at 30-30 in the next

game but Rublev wasted the break point with a shanked forehand.

At deuce Rublev still had the chance to drag the set into a tiebreak but Chung struck a forehand winner to seal victory in just under two hours of compelling action.

Chung, 21, is the first South Korean to win an ATP singles trophy since Hyung Taik-lee captured the 2003 Sydney title by beating Juan Carlos Ferrero.

Rublev, who began his ATP Tour title collection in Umag this year, looked close to tears at the end but his performance, and that of Chung’s, suggested both will be challenging for some of the biggest prizes in the sport before long.

Add in the likes of Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov, who dazzled in the Fiera Milano venue earlier in the week, beaten semi-finalists Daniil Medvedev and Croatian Borna Coric and a third Russian, Karen Khachanov, not to mention American Jared Donaldson, and the future looks bright for the men’s Tour.

Whether or not any of the rule changes trialled this week ever become regular features remains to be seen, although the 25-second shot clock and shorter warmups were popular with players and fans alike. (rtr)

Sp rt Striker Wood could be key for New Zealand in Lima

WELLINGTON - Burnley striker Chris Wood looms as a potential game breaker for New Zealand in Wednesday’s second leg of the World Cup playoff against Peru, as the All Whites bid for their third appearance in soccer’s global showpiece. All Whites coach Anthony Hudson restricted Wood’s minutes in the 0-0 drawn first leg in Wellington on Saturday after he arrived nursing a hamstring injury from the English Premier League.

Hudson introduced Wood for the final 15 minutes and he immediately changed the home side’s attack.

The All Whites had been sending long balls forward to the diminutive duo of Marco Rojas and Kosta Barbarouses, a tactic that proved redundant. However, the 1.91m (6-ft 3-in) Wood created doubt when he came on, making runs behind the defence and posing a more potent physical and aerial threat.

COPENHAGEN - Goalkeeper Darren Randolph pulled off a string of fine first-half saves as Ireland held Denmark to a scoreless draw in the first leg of their World Cup playoff on Saturday, with the two sides due to meet again in Dublin on Tuesday.

The Irish defended deeply from the first whistle, denying playmaker Christian Eriksen space, but the Danes still managed to fashion half a dozen scoring chances in the first half.

With his side barely venturing forward in attack, Randolph was called into action early, parrying a stinging volley from Jens Stryger Larsen and smothering an attempt from Andreas Cornelius to hammer home the rebound.

Eriksen and Pione Sisto also went close for Denmark in quick succession, and Randolph tipped

over a late header from Yussuf Poulsen to ensure his side escaped from the Danish capital with a draw.

Three more youngsters called into England squad for Brazil

LONDON - England coach Gareth Southgate has called up three more youngsters for the team’s home friendly against Brazil on Tuesday.

Southgate, who gave five players their international first-team debuts against Germany on Friday, has added goalkeeper Angus Gunn, defender Lewis Cook and striker Dominic Solanke to the squad for Tuesday’s Wembley encounter with the fivetimes World Cup winners.

All three were in action on Friday for England’s under-21 side in Ukraine -- and the latter two featured in the under-20s’ World Cup-winning campaign earlier this year.

WELLINGTON - Burnley striker Chris Wood looms as a potential game breaker for New Zealand in Wednesday’s second leg of the World Cup playoff against Peru, as the All Whites bid for their third appearance in soccer’s global showpiece. All Whites coach Anthony Hudson restricted Wood’s minutes in the 0-0 drawn first leg in Wellington on Saturday after he arrived nursing a hamstring injury from the English Premier League.

Royal Palace of Buleleng

SINGARAJA - There is a special atmosphere about the city of Singaraja (small town, really) which speaks of a different history to the old kingdoms of south Bali.

You notice it immediately as you drive or stroll through many old Dutch buildings (Indonesia was a Dutch colony), a Moorish looking mosque, Dutch church, Chinese temple, crowded Chinese shophouses, the even more cramped and crowded central bazaar, the broad apron of open space at the shore in front of the city, its warehouses and customs house suggestive of a once busy port.

Indeed, until Bali’s international airport opened at Kuta in the 1960s Singaraja was not only a port but Bali’s capital.

And in its social if not physical centre can be found the royal palace of Buleleng.

All the elements above are still there but until recently cloaked in faded glory which Bali’s booming economy is only beginning to dispel today.

Buleleng Palace is different from any other in Bali in that it does not follow Majapahit prescriptions for its layout.

(Majapahit is the 14th century Javanese kingdom from which most Balinese royal families trace their descent.)

The reason is a sad one. The colonial Dutch fought the rulers and people of Buleleng to total defeat culminating in their last stand at the fortress of Jagaraga, east of Singaraja and a site today marked by a temple. The venerable palace dating from the 17th century was destroyed.

It was rebuilt in the early 19th century by Anak Agung Putu Djelantik who took the quite sensible view that since walls hadn’t saved the palace from the Dutch there was no point in building any more.

Instead, the palace is a network of interlocking open courtyards entered by tall gates emblazoned with the owner’s name ‘Djelentik’ - a name which for the ‘trouble’ the family gave the Dutch must have been burned indelibly on the brains of the conquerors.

Today, the century old palace has a distinctly quaint feel to its quiet quadrangles fringed by single-storey houses with open verandahs.

The grandest house, furnished and decorated in the European style of the time’s clearly the king’s and smaller apartments are equally clearly for family members and retainers.

Although few members of the family live there, the palace still manages to exude a lived in feeling, perhaps because it continues to host community activities and temple ceremonies.

Beside a sense of quaint cosiness there is a sense of grandeur in the statues dotting the compounds which seem to tell us that we have arrived at an important place - a palace fit for a king.

The Buleleng princes don’t rule any more in this era of democracy in Indonesia but, as befits the family which built the first ‘visitor’ accommodation at nearby Lovina Beach,

it occasionally stages events and performances at the palace to which tourists are sometimes invited.

A few years ago there was even a Buleleng Palace Festival which swept out of the palace and through the town with a colourful parade of musicians and dancers.

But, as at Pemecutan in Denpasar, above all it is the strong sense of history which dominates your visit to the palace the portraits of the old rajas, ancient weapons, furnishings of bygone styles.

Some of the family still in residence speak fluent English and a talk with Anak Agung Ngurah Brawida, the younger brother of the crown prince, is to be able to walk down the meandering lanes of 400 years of history as if the events happened yesterday.

As Bali palaces go, Buleleng impresses for its uniqueness and originality and the grandeur of buildings which seem to provoke the visitor response: ‘Wow! So this is how the princes lived.’

I was present at the Buleleng Palace Festival and hundreds of townspeople and villagers were mobilized in colourful displays of music and dance.

I had been aware of palace festivals on the adjacent island of Java throughout the 1990s but it was at Buleleng that I first began to ask myself why there wasn’t and if there could be a festival of Bali palaces to give us all a glimpse of life behind Balinese palace walls while there is still time. FRESNO - In a showdown between undefeated junior welterweight contenders, Jose Ramirez (21-0, 16 KOs) blasted out Mike Reed (23-1, 12 KOs) in two rounds.

A crowd of 14,000 came out to support Ramirez, who is one of the hottest ticket sellers in the West Coast.

Ramirez will now face Amir Imam for the vacant WBC junior welterweight title. The title became vacant after Terence Crawford announced that he was moving up to the welterweight limit of 147pounds.

The World Boxing Council announced at their recent convention, that Ramirez and Imam would have to fight each other for the title. Imam was in action on the undercard and picked up a quick TKO win.

Ramirez was letting his hands go from the jump, with his punches targeting the body of Reed. There was also good work by Reed in the early going, and he was showing his speed and landing decent counters.

In the second, Ramirez really let his hands go after stunning Reed and sent him down to the mat.

Reed made it up, but he was being demolished against the ropes by Ramirez and not throwing anything back - which forced the referee to

jump in and wave off the fight.

Also on the card, the vacant IBF light heavyweight world title was captured by Artur Beterbiev (12-0, 12 KOs), who nearly went the distance, but scored two knockdowns in the twelfth and final round to stop Enrico Koelling (23-2, 6 KOs) The fight was originally set as a world title eliminator. But it was changed after the belt became vacant, after Andre Ward announced his retirement a few months ago.

Beterbiev is currently in a legal battle with promoter Yvon Michel of GYM in Canada. If he’s able to break his promotional contract, Beterbiev is expected to sign with Top Rank.

As part of the undercard, Imam (21-1, 18KOs) stopped Johnny Garcia (19-6-1) in four rounds.

Imam dominated the fight and dropped Garcia in the fourth round.

The referee felt Garcia had taken too much damage during the four rounds and stopped the fight before the start of the fight.

This was Imam’s third win and third stoppage in a row, since suffering an upset stoppage loss to Adrian Granados in November 2015. The unexpected loss was a huge setback, because at the time of that loss Imam was the WBC’s mandatory challenger to then champion Viktor Postol. (IBP/net)

Chung, 21, was outplayed in the first set and was 3-1 behind in the second set before taking over to win 3-4(5) 4-3(2) 4-2 4-2 to go through the five-day roundrobin tournament unbeaten.

A high-quality final full of sublime ball-striking was a fitting end to a promising debut for an event which has experimented with a range of innovations such as shorts sets, ‘sudden-death’ deuces and on-court coaching.

The 20-year-old Rublev, at 37th the highest-ranked qualifier for the event restricted to players aged 21 and under, lost his cool as the relentless Chung turned the match around.

But the Muscovite showed tremendous resolve to survive a deciding point deuce, effectively match point, when serving at 1-3 in the fourth set, winning a ferocious baseline exchange.

The 54th-ranked Chung showed his first sign of nerves when he double-faulted at 30-30 in the next

game but Rublev wasted the break point with a shanked forehand.

At deuce Rublev still had the chance to drag the set into a tiebreak but Chung struck a forehand winner to seal victory in just under two hours of compelling action.

Chung, 21, is the first South Korean to win an ATP singles trophy since Hyung Taik-lee captured the 2003 Sydney title by beating Juan Carlos Ferrero.

Rublev, who began his ATP Tour title collection in Umag this year, looked close to tears at the end but his performance, and that of Chung’s, suggested both will be challenging for some of the biggest prizes in the sport before long.

Add in the likes of Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov, who dazzled in the Fiera Milano venue earlier in the week, beaten semi-finalists Daniil Medvedev and Croatian Borna Coric and a third Russian, Karen Khachanov, not to mention American Jared Donaldson, and the future looks bright for the men’s Tour.

Whether or not any of the rule changes trialled this week ever become regular features remains to be seen, although the 25-second shot clock and shorter warmups were popular with players and fans alike. (rtr)

“Dump Trump” protest erupts ahead of Philippines summit

MANILA - Riot police used water canon to prevent hundreds of protesters reaching the U.S. embassy in Manila on Sunday, just a few hours before the arrival of President Donald Trump in the Philippines for a regional summit and the last leg of his Asia tour.

Carrying placards declaring “Dump Trump” and “Down with U.S. Imperialism”, the left-wing protesters were blocked by police in riot gear with shields and batons, and then showered with jets of water from a fire engine.

“Trump is the CEO of the imperialist government of the US, said 18-year-old student Alexis Danday after the protesters were scattered. “We know he is here to push for unfair treaties between the Philippines and the U.S.” Trump was expected to arrive in the Philippines at around 5 p.m. (0900 GMT) for meetings with leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and other East Asian nations, fresh off an Asia-Pacific summit and bilateral visit in Vietnam.

In Hanoi earlier on Sunday, Trump said he was prepared to mediate between claimants to the South China Sea, where four ASEAN countries and Taiwan contest China’s sweeping claims to the busy waterway.

“If I can help mediate or arbitrate, please let me know,” Trump said at a meeting with Vietnam’s president, Tran Dai Quang. “I’m a very good mediator and arbitrator.”

In August, foreign ministers of Southeast Asia and China adopted a negotiating framework for a code of conduct in the South China Sea, a move they hailed as progress but one seen by critics as a tactic to buy China time to consolidate its power.

President Jokowi, Prime Minister Turnbull meet in Vietnam

The summit of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) countries in Vietnam put on show the contrasting vision of the “America First” policy with the traditional consensus favouring multinational deals that China now seeks to champion.

Trump will meet Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte in Manila, where he will try to shore up relations strained by the mercurial Duterte’s notorious anti-U.S. sentiment and his enthusiasm for better ties with Russia and China.

These are issues of high importance, given the current state of global trade and growth and the planned Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade agreement that seems increasingly unlikely to move forward as planned. APEC 2017 is also expected to help accelerate the implementation of the Bogor Goals of free and open trade and investment by 2020.

The APEC Summit is participated in by leaders of the APEC members. They include US President Donald Trump, Chinese President China Xi Jinping, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau,

Protesters flood Barcelona demanding release of separatist leaders

BARCELONA - Hundreds of thousands of Catalan independence supporters clogged one of Barcelona’s main avenues on Saturday to demand the release of separatist leaders held in prison for their roles in the region’s banned drive to split from Spain.

Wearing yellow ribbons on their lapels to signify support, they filled the length of the Avenue Marina that runs from the beach to Barcelona’s iconic Sagrada Familia church, while the jailed leaders’ families made speeches.

Catalonia’s two main grassroots independence groups called the march, under the slogan “Freedom for the political prisoners,” after their leaders were remanded in custody on charges of sedition last month.

The protest is seen as a test of how the independence movement’s support has fared since the Catalan government declared independence on Oct. 27, prompting Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to fire its members, dissolve the regional parliament and call new elections for December.

An opinion poll this week showed that pro-independence parties would win the largest share of the vote, though a majority was not assured and question marks remain over ousted regional head Carles Puigdemont’s leadership of

the separatist cause.

“Look at all the people here,” said 63-year-old Pep Morales. “The independence movement is still going strong.”

Barcelona police said about 750,000 people had attended, many from across Catalonia. The protesters carried photos with the faces of those in prison, waved the red-and-yellow striped Catalan independence flag and shone lights from their phones.

The Spanish High Court has jailed eight former Catalan government members, along with the leaders of the Catalan National Assembly (ANC) and Omnium Cultural, while investigations continue.

The High Court last week issued arrest warrants on charges of rebellion and sedition for Puigdemont, who flew to Brussels after being deposed, and four other former government members who went with him.

“Your light reaches us in Brussels and illuminates the path we must keep following,” Puigdemont tweeted during the protest.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court ruled to release on bail the Catalan parliament’s speaker Carme Forcadell and four other lawmakers, who enabled the declaration of independence by overseeing a parlia mentary vote. Another lawmaker was released without bail. (rtr)

Indonesia loses WTO appeal in food fight with New Zealand, US

GENEVA - Indonesia lost an appeal ruling at the World Trade Organization on Thursday in a dispute with the United States and New Zealand over Indonesia’s restrictions on imports of food and animal products including beef and poultry.

Indonesia had argued that its rules were based on health concerns

and halal food standards, or aimed to deal with temporary surpluses in the domestic market. In December 2016, a panel of adjudicators faulted Indonesia, which appealed.

An Indonesian trade ministry official said the government would study the ruling before easing any restrictions, which cover products such as apples, grapes, potatoes,

onions, flowers, juice, dried fruit, cattle, chicken and beef.

“The Indonesian government will study and conduct internal coordination related to the recently circulated Appellate Body Report, including its implications for current regulations,” Oke Nurwan, Indonesia’s director general of foreign trade, told Reuters. (rtr)

The subject? “Challenges and opportunities of central bank communication.” Curve-flattening on both sides of the Atlantic, but more markedly in the United States, suggests investors have doubts over the future path of inflation and may be starting to price in a downturn just as the global economy picks up speed. Since the Fed began raising rates in 2015, the difference between long- and short-term U.S. yields has shrunk to levels not seen since before the 2008 financial crisis, reaching 67 basis points -- its flattest in a decade -- in the past week.

That partly reflects uncertainty about the passage of a Republican-sponsored bill to cut U.S. taxes, which has hauled down longer-term projections of inflation while expectations for upcoming rate increases push short-term yields higher.

With curve-flattening typically signalling a muted outlook for both growth and inflation, the trend suggests investors see a risk that the Fed’s current monetary tightening cycle will start to slow the world’s biggest economy.

A flatter curve, which makes lending less profitable, also poses a risk to the banking sector, nursed back to fragile health by central banks after it nearly collapsed a decade ago.

But with crisis-era policies still largely in place, how would central banks cushion the impact of a downturn?

Under his leadership the Fed is widely expected to continue to raise borrowing costs gradually, as Yellen began to do in late 2015, and to shrink the central bank’s $4.5 trillion balance sheet. It has raised rates twice this year and is widely expected to do so again -- to a target range of 1.25 to 1.5 percent -- next month. Investors in Europe are also focused

on potential future price growth, although the European Central Bank’s more accommodative stance means a different dynamic for bond markets.

The hunt for returns drove the German yield curve, Europe’s benchmark, to its flattest in about two months in the past week, though that trend was reversed on Thursday and Friday. Market measures of long-term inflation expectations in the bloc have risen in recent months but remain well below the ECB’s near-2-percent target, giving funds confidence that the value of those investments will not be materially eroded.

The ECB’s decision last month to extend its asset purchase programme until at least September and pledge to keep rates at record lows until well after that scheme ends have helped push bond yields across the bloc to multi-month lows.

The European Commission said on Thursday that it expected the euro zone economy to grow at its fastest pace in a decade this year before slowing somewhat. A flash estimate of third-quarter GDP in the euro area will be released on Tuesday and October’s inflation reading on Thursday. A clutch of other Fed policymakers will also be out and about, while Draghi, Kuroda and Carney are all due to make speeches during the week. (rtr)

S&P Global Ratings said in the past week that it sees a 15-20 percent risk of a U.S. recession in the next 12 months based on economic conditions, government policy uncertainty and continued gradual tightening by the Fed. Citing economic indicators that show the expansion is either in or approaching a late cycle -- though not overheating -- it forecast robust GDP growth in the second half of 2017.

“Still, monetary policy risk remains in the coming months that is not captured in our quantitative assessment,” S&P said.

“The economy has now more or less closed the output gap ...That means monetary policy is more likely to transition away from the current accommodative stance. “Furthermore, if a sizeable fiscal stimulus from the U.S. government is to indeed go through in the coming months, it increases the chance of the Fed tightening policy more aggressively.”

Looking to Balinese wisdom for sunstainable solutions

Rwa Bhineda is the Balinese concept of the opposing forces that together allow for harmony. The black and white checkered cloth used in Bali’s religious contexts and beyond is one example of how this concept is symbolized, though as the the backdrop of reality, Rwa Bineda is found expressed in countless forms throughout nature and culture. Another way to understand this concept is in the cycles of nature: without night there is no day and without the salty corrosive ocean there would be no refreshing rain.

Segara-Gunung is another Balinese concept that literally translates as ‘oceanmountain’ and is intimately tied to the broader Rwa Bnineda but on a human scale.

Segara-gunung can be interpreted in a variety of ways including as a shorthand for the cycle of water that rains down in the mountains, giving life to all along its journey and taking with it all that it not needed to be finally flushed out to sea where it is purified by the great expansive sea and then evaporates back up into clouds that rain down again. As Jero Gede Tindih from Songan, Kintamani explained in a recent discussion on the topic: “Mount Agung and Lake Batur also make up a kind of pair of opposites and as such are deeply honoured for their potency and the role that they each play in maintaining harmony”.

Long before the Javanese arrived in Bali the indigenous people of Bali lived on the shores of Lake Batur and consider the goddess of the lake to be one of their ancestors. According to legend, long long ago twins were born from two deities, the divine twins were married and bore 4 sons and a daughter. The four family lineages of the people of Lake Batur are descendants of the four sons while the daughter became the Goddess of the Lake -Dewi Danau, explained Jero Tindih.

Today people from all over Bali also honour this Lake as a divine source of fertility and abundance, and tens of thousands of people come to pray at the temple by the lakeshore to pay homage and pray for blessings. Last August a giant statue of Dewi Danau was erected on the shore of the Lake in honour of her magnificence and though not directly related to the temple, this statue is a reminder to honour the lake both physically and spiritually. The government of Bangli has also been doing their part to honour the lake.

As previously reported by Bali Post (Oct. 30), the regency of Bangli’s Agricultural Agency in collaboration with experts from Udayana University’s Faculty of Fisheries are in the process of conducting a sustainability study regarding the numerous fish farms in the lake to determine how many cages should be there, where they should be placed and how they should operate. As also reported by Bali Post ( Nov. 6) even Bangli’s military district is playing a role in honouring the lake. On November 5th, they took part in a mass garbage clean-up along with local residents along the lakeshore in the village.

Similar mass clean-ups have been done by other communities along the lake recently both in honour of the eco-system as well as to prepare the area for tourism development.

Jero Cintah (or Jero CIn as he is known) is a onion farmer and fishermen from Songan who took part in one of these recent cleanups and was so taken aback by the amount of garbage that he started to think of ways to deal with the large volume of plastic waste in his village. “Yes me and a visiting artist friend from Java have been experimenting with melting down the plastic. We finally found a way to melt a huge amount of plastic into a liquid that when cooled becomes a kind of dense concrete. We poured this liquid into two moulds -one of a fish and the other a simple brick. I am really excited about the possibilities”, he explained, saying that he hopes to create a production and learning centre on part of his land.

“We already have a place to store large amounts of plastic garbage, the technic for melting it down, and lots of ideas about what this new material can be used for. This project could make a huge contribution to the plastic waste problem and also to our local creative economy, but we need the government to be onboard, because they have the authority and responsibility for collecting waste”, said Jero Cin. He added that he hopes to gain government support for the project that would require both co-operation and funding for some simple equipment so that he and other villagers can start producing this plastic concrete.

“We managed to figure out the right formula but clearly these tin pots are not strong enough to handle the heat”, he said laughing hardily as he pointing to two large pots that had massive holes in their bottoms. He added that private parties are most welcome to join forces but added that government support is still needed for technical matters.

When asked about the sulphuric burst from the bottom of the lake that killed so many fish a few months back, Jero Cintah explained that sulphuric bursts were caused by the large deposits of garbage at the bottom of the lake that do not allow for the sulfur to slowly disperse in to the lake as usual, so instead the sulfur accumulates and then erupts violently. When the experts from Udayana University approached him about their study, he told them that he hopes they do more than just study the problem and that real efforts are made to remove the garbage from the bottom of the lake.

Jero Cintah also responded to the recent clean-up in Buahan with a little disappointment saying that he thought it was strange that after collecting the garbage they brought some of it to a nearby land-fill and burned the rest on the lakeshore. “I already talked to the former village head of Buahan about our plastic concrete project. I also spoke to a member of the Bangli military district about it. I am not sure why they are ignoring this golden opportunity. Maybe they are confused about how to make the change.

One thing I know is that, if we want to really clean up this area, we are going to have all work together on implementing real solutions. If we want tourists to come and enjoy a clean lakeshore area doing mass cleanups every few months is really not enough- have you seen all the garbage in the area? We need serious solutions, based on real incentives and organized systems”, said Jero Cintah as he went back to sorting his onions.

While plastic garbage is a relatively new problem it has quickly become a pervasive one. Perhaps by looking to the concept of Rwa Bineda a more harmonious solution can be found. Like all things in nature, plastic too must be given a place where it can be a contributing factor to harmony instead off a disruption to harmony.

While Balinese traditions address other potentially harmful forces of nature with a kind of reverence for their due place in maintaining overall harmony, plastic seems to have not yet made its way into this lexicon.

Instead plastic is still shunned, ignored or shuffled off to where it cannot be seen. But as with other forces of nature, it too must be given suitable attention and acknowledged as part of the cycle of nature, explained the Javanese artist working with Jero Cintah, who is embracing plastic as one embraces a new friend.

Otherwise, the harmonious cycle of water as the primary sustainer of life, flowing down from the mountain and eventually out to the ocean and back into the clouds that rain down on the mountain, will continue to be disrupted and will certainly have increasingly catastrophic consequences for us all. As one local priest said: “Hopefully the beauty of Dewi Danau shining in all her splendour on the lakeshore now will serve as a inspiration for all related parties not just for her beauty and grace but also for what needs to be done to restore the harmony of this important natural cycle that she represents”. Looking for generation to preserve cagcag weaving

ONE of the handicraft products of Jembrana district is cagcag woven cloth. Gradually, this weaving craft began to develop. Now, the weavers dominated by women begin to feel the impact of the traditional weaving production after years of crisis. The old cagcag looms formerly ignored in the houses are now revived.

But behind it, the handicrafts having been passed down and pursued by the people especially at Sangkaragung village in Jembrana is threatened and displaced by imported textiles. Of the existing weavers, they are dominated by old women. Only a few young people wish to learn this cagcag weaving.

“Actually, today is easy to get yarn (raw material) and the buyers are available. So, we work for days do not feel fatigue,” said Ketut Sunari, 43, a weaver of songket cagcag from Sangkaragung village, some time ago.

However, amid the increasingly brighter prospect of production, she still has a concern, namely regarding the regeneration. The current situation is much different from the time before, where every girl began to get involved in this craft. Moreover, for her school tuition, Sunari highly depended on the sales of weaving products. Now, due to contamination of modernization, it is very difficult to accustom girls to this weaving works.

To preserve this weaving craft, the regeneration must be done. “Today, there are many generations of mine and women here are weaving cagcag clothes. But, I do not know how the regeneration will be,” she explained.

Cagcag weaving is a quite old tradition owned by the people of Jembrana. Using wooden looms is simple enough but complicated, thus requires the weavers’ persistence. This handicraft develops at a number of old villages in Jembrana, such as Batuagung and Sangkaragung. Long enough process and the need of precision make these clothes have high enough value.

Due to having many versions, this weaving craft are named cagcag. The most commonly understood by the elders, the cagcag is the onomatopoeic clashing sound of wood with wood in the weaving process.

Currently, the weavers adequately feel the difference in terms of the results compared to last crisis because this craft can give her income. Sunari having pursued this work since the age of 7 years has ever felt

the difficulty of getting threads and marketing channels. Her craft business is indeed quite small, even she runs herself and initially served as a side job. But after her husband died from an accident, Sunari relied on the income from weaving with typical motive of Jembrana.

At Sangkaragung village, almost all housewives have cagcag weaving skills. During the last crisis, many housewives left this craft work and chose to work in paddy fields or take odd works. Their wooden cagcag looms inherited from their ancestors are still stored but some are already damaged. Since Sangkaragung becomes the center for cagcag weaving handicraft, the looms again develops.

Moreover, some housewives make new looms, but not a few remains to use the looms of tens of years old, including her loom. Cagcag songket clothes are indeed much different from the other songket and require perseverance in the process. A piece of songket cagcag sizing two meters (maximum) will take her at least three days, chiefly for the easy motive such as star moon, sowing flowers and so forth. No wonder, the price of this cloth can reach IDR 800,000 to IDR 1.2 million.

Price hike of raw materials (yarn) does not make the weavers disappointed because the marketing is also encouraging. For marketing, Sangkaragung has currently owned a gallery with the help of one of the banking companies. For marketing to capital matters, the weavers are also given assistance. Sunari hoped the unique handicrafts of Jembrana can continuously develop and take root. So, when people call Jembrana, cagcag weaving will get attached to the icon or souvenir.

One of the young generations pursuing this weaving tradition can be found at Batuagung, exactly at Sawe hamlet. At a young age, Desak Kembarina has started to pursue this art of weaving after quitting elementary school. This work has been doing since the age of 12 years. At a glance, her house will not indicate any cagcag weaving activities. Kembarina confessed to weaving at her leisure time. When doing other activities, the loom is put into the house. There are only a few of generations like Kembarina. She claimed to pursue this work because of the necessities of life to increase income. (olo)

SEMARAPURA — Lately, online shopping in social media tends to be mushrooming. However, this has not affected the merchants of customary clothing in Semarapura Market, Klungkung. Their turnover remains stable. Moreover, there was an increase ahead of Galungan and Kuningan festivities.

A local merchant, Nengah Parwata, acknowledged that transactions of online shopping have indeed become a trend in the society, especially among the younger generation as considered to be more practical. Buyers no longer have to come to the market. The goods ordered are directly delivered to consumers. However, it does not make him worried about his business to go bankrupt because of losing competitiveness. “Until now, it stays normal and has no impact. Our sales are still the same as before the presence of online shopping,” he said.

A merchant from Ngis village, Manggis, Karangasem, also stated

that ahead of Galungan and Kuningan his sales increased up to 30 percent. To achieve this, he has his own strategies. The goods on sale must be really qualified. “If selling directly, we offer a wide selection of goods. Consumers can choose and compare. They can see firsthand the quality, while in online shopping, just see the photos. The products can look good due to camera effect,” he said.

It is not much different from what was expressed by another merchant, Ni Wayan Sujati. Her customers are still loyal to buy her products. She also expressed consumers’ reason for more options. “Customers remain stable as ever before and so are the sales,” she said.

One of the buyers, Wayan Wirawan, admitted if shopping off-line can get more certainty in terms of quality assurance. “We can immediately know which is good and which is not,” he said. (kmb45)

A key Western ally and host to the U.S. Fifth Fleet, Sunni Muslim-ruled Bahrain has for years grappled with protests and sporadic violence coming from its Shi’ite majority.

“The incident was an act of sabotage and a dangerous act of terrorism aimed at harming the higher interests of the nation and the safety of the people,” the interior ministry said on its website.

“Terrorist acts witnessed by the country in the recent period are carried out through direct contacts and instructions from Iran,” the statement quoted Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid bin Abdullah alKhalifa as saying.

In Tehran, Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi rejected the allegations as “false talk and childish accusations”, the ministry said on its website.

Bahraini authorities said they had brought under control the fire at the oil pipeline.

State-run Bahrain Petroleum Company (Bapco) closed the flow of oil to the stricken pipeline, the civil defence said in a statement earlier on Saturday.

Residents close to the incident near Buri village, some 15 kilometres (10 miles) from the capital Manama, were being evacuated to a

safe shelter, the statement added.

Saudi Arabia’s energy ministry said pumping to Bahrain had been suspended and the kingdom was stepping up security precautions at its own facilities.

“The attack on the pipeline ... was followed by the suspension of the pumping of oil to the State of Bahrain,” the Saudi Ministry of Energy, Industry and Mineral Resources said.

“The Ministry of Energy also confirmed that it has increased its security precautions at all its facilities, and that all these facilities enjoy the highest levels of protection and safety,” it added in a statement.

After authorities quashed Shi’ite-led “Arab Spring” protests in 2011, militants have launched deadly bombing and shooting attacks against security forces that Manama blames on Tehran.

Iran denies any role in Bahrain’s unrest.

Bahrain relies on the Abu Safa oilfield for the majority of its oil. It shares the field with Saudi Arabia.

Oil to Bahrain is transported via the 55 km A-B pipeline which has a capacity of 230,000 barrels per day (bpd).

A new 350,000-bpd oil pipeline between the two countries will be completed next year and will serve the planned expansion of Bahrain’s refinery capacity.

Arabian Light crude oil will flow from Saudi Aramco’s Abqaiq plant via the 115-km new pipeline, 73 km of which will run overland and the rest under the Gulf. (rtr)

SYDNEY - Australia’s Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on Sunday said he would discuss North Korea and Islamist terrorism as threats to regional stability, ahead of his arrival at an East Asia leaders’ summit in the Philippines.

North Korea was a criminal regime and the single largest threat to the region, Turnbull told a televised news conference in Hong Kong.

“They are very cunning operators,” he said, urging a tightening of economic sanctions.

Islamist terrorism in the southern Philippines is the other key security issue Turnbull aims to discuss with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte in Manila.

Australia said in September it would send troops to train Philippines armed forces engaged in a 154-day battle with Islamic State fighters in the southern city of Marawi, in the country’s biggest security crisis in decades.

Turnbull stressed the importance of help by Indonesian President Joko Widodo in defusing Islamist

extremism as the leader of the world’s largest Muslimmajority country, which is also a democracy.

“He speaks with great authority when he says Islam is compatible with democracy and moderation,” Turnbull added. “He’s a powerful voice for moderation in the region.”

Australia’s embattled prime minister will attend the high-powered regional summit at the same time as a citizenship crisis at home has destroyed the parliamentary majority of his ruling centre-right coalition.

The constitution bars dual nationals from parliament, and Turnbull’s government was thrown into disarray last month by a High Court ruling that five parliamentarians, including his deputy, Barnaby Joyce, were ineligible to be lawmakers.

The resignation of another MP on Saturday has left Turnbull as the head of a minority government, with his position guaranteed only by the votes of two independents.

Lifestyle triggers rampant drug cases BANGLI — The disclosure of drug possession case involving the individual Deputy Chairman of the Bali House of Representatives in Denpasar recently has stunned many people. At the same time, the incident re-opened the public eyes about the threat of drug crimes everywhere and it is very vulnerable to come into all walks of life.

A community figure who is also Chairman of the Customary Village Middle Assembly (MMDP) of Bangli, Made Rijasa, admitted to be quite surprised when hearing the news in the media about the drug cases involving the official in Bali.

The case was revealed from the police raid at the official’s residence.

Similarly, those having involved in drug business choose to take the profession though has legal risks.

This kind of easy job is considered very profitable when compared to other jobs. “Now, it becomes a shared responsibility for the condition,” said Ardhi.

According to him, family as the closest institution should take the main responsibility to supervise other family members. While the institutions such as the BNN and police are assigned by the state to eradicate and protect the public from drug hazards. It must be active and more intensive to do prevention and prosecution to community.

This member of Bangli House of Representatives for the period of 2004-2019 is very supportive of urine test program held by the authorities to prevent and detect the existence of drug abuse in several government agencies and other institutions. Australia has 240 named native species of frog, and the museum wants to use its FrogID app to identify what it believes are dozens more still ribbiting under the radar.

“One of the cool things about this is you can survey frogs just by listening,” said Jodi Rowley, the museum’s curator of amphibian and reptile conservation biology.

“It’s actually a lot more accurate than photos, and photos encourage people to handle or disturb frogs,” Rowley added. She noted that ev-

ery frog species has a unique call.

While frog populations are in decline around the world, Australia’s frogs are especially vulnerable because of a combination of climate change, pollution, introduced species and urban development, the country’s Department of Environment and Energy says.

Rowley said she hopes campers, hikers and other serious nature lovers will help with the research, but she noted that even the humble backyard fishpond could provide valuable data.

“It might allow us to figure out

which areas of suburbia are really good for frogs, why they are good and hopefully help create more frog friendly habitats in suburbia,” she said.

Rowley said amateurs who record previously unknown frog calls may even help discover a new type of frog or determine if any introduced species have gone unnoticed.

The rampant drug cases in Bali so far are inseparable from the influence of materialism starting to penetrate the community.

Head of the Provincial National Narcotic Agency (BNNP) Bali, Putu Gede Suastawa, said on Wednesday (Nov. 8) the suspects had allegedly ordered marijuana twice from Aceh, lured by the profits they could make selling the illicit goods. Their supplier in Aceh was allegedly a 28 year old with the initials DW and then the thrid package was sent to Bali it was intercepted by police officers who seized the eight packages of marijuana each weighing 965 grams. “We started looking into this case after being tipped off by a concerned member of society” explained Suastawa on Wednesday (Nov. 8).

The case was successfully revealed due to the work of the Eradication Team of the BNNP Bali led by Eradication Division Head Ketut Arta accompanied by the Intelligence Section Head Saifudin Jupri. “The marijuana package was sent to the alleged perpetrator Jarot’s boarding house”, he said.

As soon as the suspect Jarot received the package,

the officers arrested him. The marijuana was packed in jar containing turmeric powder on top of the eight marijuana packages. “That way, when the jar was opened, at first glance it would appear to contain spices.

The jar contained eight packages” said Jupri.

The officers then searched Jarot’s boarding house but found no other evidence. During the interrogation of the alleged perpetrator, Jarot said that the goods belonged to Robi and that he he had only let Robi use his address.

Robi was then lured to the crime scene around 21:00 after the Achenes suspect was told that his package he had ordered had arrived. As soon as he entered Jarots’ boarding house, Robi was arrested. The officers then found 41.29 grams of marijuana and two other packages of 6.65 grams of marijuana stored in a pack of cigarettes in his bag.

The officers investigated further and finally searched Robi’s boarding house on Jalan Raya Padonan, Badung where they found five more packages of marijuana stored in a brown box set in the bathroom. “We secured eight packages and then five packages of marijuana, for a total of 5 kilograms”, he explained.

Jupri confirmed that both suspects were not just couriers but part of the Acehnese drug syndicates becoming dealers in Bali. As a result of their actions, both suspects are threatened with a maximum sentence of death penalty or life imprisonment. “We are charging them under Article 114 paragraph 2 or Article 111 paragraph 2 of Law No. 35/2009 on the narcotic crimes”, he said. Bali facing drug emergency The RAPID development of information technology is a double-edged sword. While having increasingly rapid access to information allow us access to greater knowledge and skills it also allows for access to information about social destructive things like, pornography, drugs, promiscuity, radicalism and terrorism. Due to global developments in information technologies, the youth are facing various threats. According to the Head of the Bali Provincial National Narcotic Agency (BNNP), Putu Gede Suastawa, drug abuse it is a multidimensional issue that involves many aspects of life. and thus poses a threat to the resilience of the nation. Drug abuse amongst young people, he added is on the rise.

“Such conditions are also present in Bali and if ignored can endanger the survival of our nation’s future generations.

Research by BNNP shows that in 2015 some 39 students were recorded as being addicted to drugs. Bali is thus ranked forth in the country”, he said on Saturday (Nov. 11).

The young generation, he said will become increasingly fragile is undermined by could pose a serious threat to the future of the nation. If the alarming rate at which young people are becoming shackled by drugs is not addressed immediately, we will be facing much bigger problems, said Suastawa. The rapid development of information technology are also giving rise to issues related to new narcotic substances known as New Psychoactive Substances (NPS).

“Therefore, the government has a program called ‘Welcoming the Golden Generation 2045’ Since the young generations are the future of the nation, they must be well prepared to represent the ideals of the nation” said Suastawa. When asked if Bali was currently facing a drug emergency, he affirmed that there were some 62, 457 cases of drug abuse in 2017, or to put it simply – yes things are critical. The average age of drug abusers is between 21-47 and include officials, middlemanagement, well established people and other people with important roles in organizations.

“The fact has been proven again. It is not only people in the hospitality industry or the business sector but bureaucrats and members of parliament are also using drugs. Legislators in Tabanan and in Bali’s provincial government have been involved in drug cases”, he said.

When asked about the number of government officials in Bali that are using illicit drugs, this this one-star general said that all levels of society are subject to problems with drug abuse – including government officials and wealthy people..

Moreover, Bali is an easy target for drugs as indicated by the presence of drug production centers here and the number of people who have been prosecuted for drug related crimes.

This is further aggravated by rampant smuggling of drugs into Bali, ranging from ecstasy (reaching tens of thousands of pills), crystal meth, marijuana, flakka and blue sapphire.

“This problem needs to be addressed by everyone working together as Bali is a promising target for drug syndicated. It is a tantalizing target because there is a demand, so suppliers are happy. Currently 60 percent of drug cases in Bali involve Balinese people whether as dealers, or users”, he added.

Suastawa explained that many people turn to drugs looking for fun even though such goods have already been declared to be hazardous. People are misguidedly looking for pleasure and escape from the realities of life. In fact people are slowly killing themselves and many people have already died form drug use. IN Indonesia, about 50 people a day die from drug abuse whiel in Bali 2 – 3 people a day die from drug abuse.

Suastawa, explained that in order to save Balinese people from deadly substances the BNNP Bali has been taking various steps in terms of prevention, discipline and addict recovery. Such efforts have been reinforced by the issuance of the circular of Ministry of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform No.50/2017 dated October 11 and Regional Regulation No.7/2017. Both laws instruct government agencies to conduct urine tests every six months to check for drug use.

“We in Bali responded to this issue early on. In fact urine tests amongst legislators has given rise to debate. Since I insisted it was implemented. The Circular of the Minister of Manpower and Transmigration and Regional Regulation should be obeyed and enforced. Besides, there is also a program in place and pecalang (customary guards) have been trained as anti-drug volunteers and pararem (addendum to customary village laws) have been created. Such effrots however will amount to nothing is we all not all committed to these efforts.

Let’s all work together – the exceutive, the legislative and the juridicary so we can combat the drug problem” he Suastawa entusiastically In 2018, the BNNP will encourage customary villages to make addenda to customary village bylaws as an important

basis for protecting Bali. Volunteers pecalang, anti-drug activists, programs and rehabilitation centers will also be strengthened. The budget for making in Bali has also been doubled by the BNN as this is considered a successful way of disclosing such cases.

Chief of Bali Police, Dr. Petrus Reinhard Golose, has repeatedly expressed his commitment to minimizing the potential of Balinese people getting involved in drugs by promoting local wisdom. He wants to help support pecalang and to work together to prevent widespread drug abuse on the Island of the Gods.. “About 60 to 70 percent of drug couriers are Balinese.

I am therefore trying to bring this number down so that Bali will not become damaged any further. Since I became Chief of the Bali Police, I have formed the CTOT Taskforce, and one of their functions is to fight against narcotics”, he said.

Golose said that he always emphasizes to his personnel that they should not get involved in drugs and that they should not even consider things like stamina enhancers and so forth as part of their lifestyle. Anyone who does use drugs, said Golose will be ordered to leave the police institution. This, he said is for the sake of Bali’s younger generation. “Information technology can help them get drugs” he added.

More and more evidence is showing that drugs pose a serious threat to the future of the nation. “ I invite everyone to commit themselves to staying away form drugs. Together we can eradicate the root of this problem. Hopefully the younger generation as the backbone of this country can be protected from drug abuse” he said.

There has been a quantitative increase in the demand for narcotics in Bali so dealers see this as a very promising market.

The public is often exposed to false information about drug abuse through lectures, brochures and interactive platforms on electronic media. (rah)

Customary villages must be involved in prevention hope that customary villages authorities can participate in drug prevention by creating addenda to customary laws”, explained Sudyatmaja.

The need for the involvment of customary village authorities was confrimed by the Chief of the BNNP Bali, Putu Gede Suastawa, during a public discussion on the Prevention and Eradication of Drug Abuse and Illicit Circulation (P4GN) in the district of Klungkung. Drug prevention, he added also needs the strategic support of trained volunteers involving pecalang and customary villages “There has been a lot of rhetoric and advocacy, but what is the result? Well, we have established teams of volunteers through the P4GN involving pecalang in each customary village. Customary villages also needs to make addenda to theirs customary village bylaw. Sekaa Taruna or customary youth club should also be involved in prevention”, he said.

Volunteers have the authority to monitor and inspect places that are vulnerable to drug trafficking such as boarding houses and night clubs (though they should be accompanied by chief of customary villages). Any people found to be on

drugs should be taken to hospital or directed to rehabilitation programs. Similarly, they should be supported with continuous supervision and assistance. “People are still in doubt about what to do, but with time they should no longer be. Direct involvement of the community can give birth to confidence”, he said.

Deputy Regent of Klungkung, I Made Kasta, who is also Chairman of the District Narcotic Agency (BNK) of Klungkung, stated that prevention measures have been made by giving information to villages every week. He added that he hopes this information can spread to other communities. “ The BNK regularly provides information to communities” he said.

Chief of Klungkung’s Customary Village Middle Assembly (MMDP), I Ketut Rupia Arsana, declared that adding addenda to customary village bylaws related to drug use is a response to the appeal by the chief of the Klungkung Police and is meant to prevent drug abuse. “Hopefully, this appeal will be followed up on by all our villages. We will be summoning each village to see if they have such an addendum or not” affirmed Arsana. (kmb45)

SEMARAPURA - Drug abuse remains a serious issue in this country and the people of Klungkung are facing this problem is a serious way. Between Febuary and November 6th of this year, Klungkung Police’s Narcotics Investigation Unit arrested 22 in drug related cases. This number is up form the 16 that were arrested in 2016. Only one of these people is recorded as originating from outside of Bali and only one was underage. “It is mostly Balinese people who are perpetrators and mist of them are drug users rather than dealers”, said Chief of Bali Police Narcotic Investigation Unit, I Gede Sudyatmaja, recently.

The 5km race was won by Samgar with a super quick time of 16:37. Putu Andika was a close second at 16:48 and Gregorius finished third with a time of 17:30. Ella Barrat was the first female with a time of 19:42, second was Ni Kadek Ayu Sukarniti at 21:00 and third was Cita with 21:08. New ‘Star Wars’ trilogy raises hopes after Disney results miss target

LOS ANGELES - The force of “Star Wars” lifted Walt Disney Co shares on Thursday as the promise of a new film trilogy overshadowed disappointing quarterly results and struggles at the media company’s television business.

The storied movie studio and theme park operator is scrambling to keep viewers who are abandoning its current top money maker, cable networks. The power of its characters and brands are the reason many investors stick with the company despite its challenges.

Disney shares rose more than 1 percent after Chief Executive Bob Iger said Disney had struck a deal with Rian Johnson, director of upcoming film “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” to create a new trilogy in the blockbuster science fiction series.

A live-action “Star Wars” TV series also is being developed for a streaming service that Disney is launching to capture online audiences, Iger said.

Disney shares rose about 1 percent from their Thursday closing price to $103.57 after the “Star Wars” announcements, reversing an initial falloff after Disney’s results raised concerns about cable subscriptions.

ESPN, the sports powerhouse that is seen as a proxy for Disney’s ability to fight the rapid migration of audiences to online viewing. Affiliate revenue rose and overall results at ESPN were comparable to the prior year for the quarter that ended in September, Disney said.

Total revenue from Disney’s cable business, the largest unit which includes ESPN and the Disney Channel, fell marginally to $3.95 billion in the fourth quarter, missing the $4.06 billion consensus of analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. To address challenges in its TV networks business, Disney is developing family-friendly streaming services that it will sell directly to consumers to compete with Netflix Inc and other rivals. Building those businesses tops the company’s agenda for the next year, Iger told analysts on a conference call.

“We believe creating a direct-to-consumer relationship is vital to the future of our media businesses, and it’s our highest priority this year,” he said.

New Disney releases will go to the company’s own service rather than Netflix, starting in 2019, and Iger on Thursday said the new service would be priced “substantially below” Netflix, a reflection of having less content. (rtr)

China bars billionaire actress Zhao Wei from stock trading for 5 years

BEIJING - Billionaire Chinese actress Zhao Wei and her husband have been barred from trading in the mainland stock market for five years and fined by the securities regulator, which cited their disclosure irregularities relating to a takeover bid of a firm.

Zhao and her husband Huang Youlong, through a company they controlled - Tibet Longwei Culture Media Co - made a failed attempt to buy 29.1 percent of Zhejiang Wanjia Co in late 2016. Zhejiang Wanjia was later taken over by another investor and renamed Zhejiang Sunriver Culture Co. But Tibet Longwei’s bid drew scrutiny of the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) regarding information disclosure and takeover-financing ability.

The regulator stated that the bid made misleading statements and major omissions in disclosures, according to a filing by Zhejiang Sunriver to the Shanghai stock exchange.

The bidder’s actions “severely impacted market order, hurt medium and small investors’ confidence in the market, and undermined fairness, justice and openness of the market,” the regulator said, according to the filing.

Zhao, Huang and Tibet Longwei could not be contacted for comment by phone. CSRC also could not be reached immediately for comment. Zhejiang Sunriver said in an emailed statement to Reuters it will “disclose information in a timely manner in accordance with law for any follow-up”.

The CSRC fined Zhao and Huang 300,000 yuan ($45,201.15) each, while Tibet Longwei Culture Media Co received a 600,000 yuan penalty.

Zhao and Huang built up an estimated 7 billion yuan in wealth through their investments, including early stakes in Alibaba Pictures Group, and were ranked 567 in the 2017 list of China’s richest compiled by the Hurun Report. (rtr)

JAKARTA - The Central Executive Board of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) selected the holiday of Kuningan (Nov 11) to announce their candidates for governor and deputy governor of Bali for the simultaneous regional leader election 2018. Chairperson of PDI-P Central Executive Board, Megawati Soekarnoputri, who led the coordination meeting, officially announced the pair of Bali’s gubernatorial candidates: I Wayan Koster and deputy governor candidate Tjokorda Oka Ardhana Sukawati (Cok Ace) for the 2018 Simultaneous Election to be held on June 27, 2018.

The announcement was made directly by Megawati at PDI-P’s office, Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Saturday (Nov. 11). The announcement was made through the submission of a recommendation letter that included a security mechanisms, in the form of print security and a security code.

Hundreds of PDI-P cadres from the executive branch of the central parliament, as well as provincial, district and regional PDI-P leaders from across Bali, and members of Bali’s House of Representatives’ electorate were present. The central executive officials in attendance included PDI-P Secretary-General Hasto Kristiyanto, Deputy Secretary General Eriko Sotarduga, Chairman of Central Executive Board Andreas Pareira, Bambang DH and I Made Urip. Many other PDI-P managers were also in attendance.

In her speech, Megawati sought the sincerity of the Balinese people to trust in relaying the leadership of the party to Koster or –Cok Ace of KBS (Koster Bali Satu or Koster Bali One) - “To the people, especially the people of Bali we request your prayers and blessings, please help me elect the two of them. I will close my eyes, I think Balinese people love me”, said Megawati.

This former president of Indonesia explained the reasons for electing KBS-Cok Ace. According to Megawati, other than qualifying in terms of academic background, they both also have experience as people’s representatives at the central and provincial levels.

Parliament works in partnership with the government; the central parliament works in partnership with the president and the ranks of his cabinet, while provincial

and district parliaments work in partnership with the governor and regents / mayor.

Megawati also said that Koster is smart. “He is small in stature and Javanese people says his appearance is inappropriate. However after seeing him myself, I see that he is as smart as a doctor, engineer and has a masters’ degree in management. His name is Wayan Koster” she said.

According to Megawati, the figure known as Cok Ace, is a cadre that has been well known for a long time. COk Ace first served as Regent of Gianyar for two periods in 2003-2008 and 2008-2013. He is also known as an academic. Cok

Ace is member of the Ubud Grand Palace family. “His father was the king of Ubud, and is legendary,” said Megawati.

Regarding Cok Ace’S academic background, Megawati said that she is impressed by his undergraduate degree in architecture. “ His Master’s and doctorate degrees, however are in literature and cultural studies. Beside, he graduated cum laude. He also dances a magical dance that not everyone can dance as it has particular rules governing it”, addded Mega.

In choosing a regional leader candidate, the first President of Indonesia Soekarno confirmed that election of a governor and his deputy must be based on their capabilities and track record and they must have experience in the legislature. “When someone wants to enter the political arena they must have a wealth of experience.

At the very least, they should have been a member of the House of Representatives, either at the district or provincial level. Its partners must be the provincial government as well as district / municipal gov-

ernments”, added Megawati.

An understanding of Soekarno’s teachings, she said is also important, she said. Megawati, emphasized that she considers it very important that the regional leaders elected by the PDI-P apply the concept of the Planned Universal Development System initiated by her father.

Targeting 65 percent of votes

I Wayan Koster as condidate for Governor of Bali aims to get at least 65 percent of the votes to occupy the seat of Bali 1 in the simultaneous regional leader election 2018. So far, the PDI-P candidates for governor and deputy governor of Koster Bali Satu—Cok Ace are communicating with a number of parties in order to strengthen their political power. “So far, we have been in talks with National Mandate Party (PAN) and National Awakening Party (PKB) and they both seem to be giving their support. We are still working towards creating a coalition” , said Koster.

Koster said that he and Cok Ace along with their supporting team will be making more frequent trips to different groups in the community in order to share their vision, mission and work program.

Koster said that he has been specifically assigned by Chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri to make the province of Bali province into a model of the application of the Planned Universal Development System initiated by President Soekarno.

This member of Commission X of the Central House of Representatives said the first step he is taking to conduct internal consolidation within the party. “In order to achieve this victory we must start by consolidating all levels of the party” he affirmed.
