LOCKERBIE, Scotland – The quiet Scottish town of Lockerbie is determined to play down Friday’s one-year anniversary of the freeing of the Libyan man convicted of blowing up an airliner over its skies. The Scottish government released Abdelbaset Ali Mohmet al-Megrahi from jail on compassionate grounds on August 20, 2009, allowing him to return to Libya to die from terminal prostate cancer.

A year on, Megrahi is still alive, a fact fuelling anger in the United States — where most of the victims of Pan Am Flight 103 were from — at Scotland’s decision to free him. On December 21, 1988, Sherwood Crescent in Lockerbie was nearly wiped out when the wings of the jumbo jet fell from the sky and burst into a fireball. Now rabbits nibble at the grass covering what was once a huge crater. Eleven of the street’s residents died, along with 259 passengers and crew on the jet travelling from London to New York when it was blown up. Photographs of the aftermath show the charred shells of homes and cars, though not the bodies which lay in the gardens. Sherwood Crescent was rebuilt and is now, again, a quiet street of modest brick homes with neat gardens where lilies and roses bloom. Across Lockerbie, people want to move on — but that does not mean

forgetting what happened 22 years ago. One man who, like many in the town, was wary of giving his name said Megrahi should have ended his life behind bars in Scotland. “I think he should have died here and his body should have been flown back after — there’s a lot of people whose loved ones aren’t coming back,” he said. Others talked of alternative punishments which the Libyan should have faced rather than being sent home. Experts now say he could survive for several years thanks to new forms of cancer treatment. When Scotland’s Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill freed Megrahi, he said it was likely he only had three months to live. JAKARTA - Norway agreed Thursday to advance 30 million dollars to Indonesia in the first installment of a planned billion-dollar scheme to cut the country’s greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation. After two days of talks in Jakarta, Norwegian officials said they were satisfied that Indonesia was making progress towards its promise to impose a twoyear moratorium on deforestation starting in January 2011. “Indonesia... is taking a global leadership role on climate change. Norway is honoured to work with Indonesia in a partnership built on mutual trust and respect, and a long time friendship,” Norwegian Ambassador Eivind Homme said. “Our shared commitment to transparency, accountability and predictable contributions in return for agreed deliverables breaks new ground in international climate change collaboration.” He said the meetings in Jakarta had “brought us significantly forward” and he expected to be able to announce a “fully operational partnership” at a UN conference on climate change in Mexico in December. The Ramayana epic presented in Balinese ballet composition entitled “Envoy Hanuman” involving Balinese artists from the Hindu Dharma Institute (IHDN) Denpasar and Hindu University of Indonesia (Unhi) Denpasar appeared before the Indian public, last Wednesday (Aug 18) evening. Performance of the Balinese art envoy, other than entertaining the local community in a reception of the 65th anniversary of RI’s Independence in the Indonesian Embassy in New Delhi, was also in the framework of cultural mission of religious art on the initiative of the Director General of Hindu Religious Guidance, Ministry of Religious Affairs. Presentation of the art envoy involving 60 dancers and gamelan players, attempted to touch the emotional connection of local communities—reminding us that Ramayana epic came from India and developed to Indonesia (Java and Bali). Through the art show was expected the brotherhood relationship and inner closeness of devotees could increase. It included

the increased cooperative relations in the field of religion and religious education. Rector of IHDN Denpasar Prof. Dr. Made Titib said that the Ramayana and Mahabharata epic posed a historical event. Therefore, they were categorized into Itihasa or history as it truly happened. The ballet performances received positive appreciation from the local public. Approximately 800 invitations came to watch the presentation. At the end of the show, the artists were flying the flags of both countries, Indonesia and India. “Performance of this art envoy denotes the interpretation on the concept of soft power diplomacy,

namely the diplomacy considered adequately effective in this twenty first century,” said Yudha Triguna who is also a sociologist. The first reconsideration (PK) trial on death punishment for convicted Australian, Scott Anthony Rush, last Wednesday (18/8) went to a riot. It started with the judges clarifying the trial schedule which then continued with Prosecutor IB Argitha Candra statement to cancel the trial as it had flawed the law. More over he threatens to walk out if judges forced to continue the trial. “We asked so the trial is cancelled as the law base to the trial was already wrong,” Argitha Candra clarified, whom have made judges led by Putu Suika shocked. Before, Argitha Candra marked the decision of Head of Denpasar District Court dated 16th July 2010 No. 628/ Pid.B/2005/PN.Dps is fatally flawed as this decision letter showed judges to take care pretrial case and not for reconsideration trial which was asked by Legal Counsel Robert Khuana and friends. What’s more fatal, the decision was based on Criminal Code section 152 paragraph 1 when reconsideration

trial should based it on Criminal Code section 265, “These flaws don’t just happened, and it’s fatal.” The judges led by Putu Suwika made a little mistake as it’s just a wrong mentioned and wasn’t in purpose to flaw the law. Judge also asked the trial to be continued and Prosecutor’s complain to be noted in Trial Event News. Robert Khuana also stated to have the trial continued as it’s only a typing mistake. Although Prosecutor threatens to walk out if the mistakes are not mended. The trial was then halted for 30 minutes as judges wanted a time to consult with the Head of the District Court. After the halt was taken out, a member of Judges, Puji Harian, stated there was no flaws in the judges decisions. In the letter it was clear that this is for Scott Antony Rush’s reconsideration trial. With showing the letter to all Puji stated, “It was not written for pretrial case. So this trial is still official.” And for the law base used, the letter is based on Criminal Code section 263 on re-

consideration trial which so it is covering Criminal Code section 265 as well. They did admit there was a flaw on the decided trial schedule made by the Judge Leader. In the decision it was for pretrial case and the law was based on Criminal Code section 152 which is general trial, “It’s suppose to be Criminal Code section 265.” Prosecutor Argitha Candra didn’t talk much after judges gave their reason. Yet apparently this attitude should be believed as Head of Denpasar District Court Nyoman Sutama informed Head of State Court Heru Sriyanto, to ask prosecutor not to blame those mistakes so much. Meanwhile, Scott’s legal counsel, Robert Khuana, also asked Judges to make sure Scott’s attendance in the trial. Before, Judges did ask Head of Kerobokan Public Prison to bring the convict whose popular known as Bali Nine. In the other hand, Prosecutor stated that Scott’s attendance is out of his obligation. Three Whales Stranded at Lebih Beach On Wednesday (18/8), Lebih Beach fishermen were shocked by the three stranded whales being in the waters where they go fishing. The three 2,5 meters whales were being evacuated several times by the fishermen also with Balawista, Police Civil Service an KSDA. were seen and tourists had a chance to see it too. With all the residents, they managed to push the whales back to the ocean, “Yet this morning (18/8) the whales were stranded again.” From the three whales stranded, two of them were successfully evacuated by being pushed. Yet the last one was hurt dragged by the sands, so it was evacuated using a boat.

The stranded whales were suspected to have been lost in finding food. They were stranded as they were chasing food reaching the shores. Besides this, the incident seemed to remind the local fishermen of what happened few years ago. Calonarang: The King, the Witch and the Priest At the beginning of 7th century, a Balinese prince becomes the king of Java, the great Erlangga. His mother, Mahendradatta, was a Javanese princess who ruled Bali with her Balinese husband, Dharmodayana, until the husband, suspecting her of practising evil magic, exiled her to the forest. When Erlangga’s father died, leaving Mahendradatta as a rangda or a widow, she conspired to use her band of pupils trained in the black arts to destroy Erlangga’s kingdom. Her chief grudge against Erlangga because of fancied insults to her beautiful daughter, Ratna Menggali – the noblemen of Daha had refused her in marriage for fear of her mother’s evil reputation. Calonarang (Erlangga’s mother who practising evil magic) went with her pupils to the cemetery and they prayed and danced in honour of Begawati, the deity of black magic, to help them destroy Daha. The goddes appeared and danced with them, granting her permission, warning the witch, however, to preserve the center of the kingdom untouched. The witches danced at the

crossroads and soon people fell in great numbers. Discovering the cause of the epidemic, Erlangga ordered his soldiers to go and kill the witch. They stole into her house while she slept and stabbed her in the heart , but Calonarang awoke unhurt and consumed the daring soldiers with her own fire. The witch went once more into the cemetery and danced with her pupils, dug out corpses, cutting them into pieces, eating the members, drinking the blood, and wearing the entrails as necklaces. Begawati appeared again and joined in the bloody banquet, but warned Calonarang to be careful. The witches danced once more at the crossroads and the dreadful epidemic ravaged the land, the vassals of Erlangga died before they could even bury the corpses they bore to the cemeteries. The desperate king sent for Mpu Bharada, the holy man from Lemah Tulis, the only living being who could vanquish the witch. Mpu Bharada planned his campaign carefully. He sent Bahula, his young assistant, to ask for

the witch daughter’s in marriage. Highly flattered, the mother gave her consent and after a happy and passionate honeymoon, Bahula learned from his wife the secret of Calonarang’s power. The possession of a little magic book which he stole and turned over to his master. The holy man copied it and had it returned before the disappearance could be noticed. The book was a manual of righteousness and had to be read backwards. The holy man was then able to restore life to those victims whose bodies had not yet decayed. Armed with the new knowledge, he accused the witch of her crimes, but she challenged him by setting an enormous Banyan tree on fire by a single look of her fiery eyes. Bharada foiled the enraged witch by restoring the tree, and she turned her fire against the holy man. Unmoved, he killed her with one of her own mantras, but she died in her monstrous form and Bharada, to absolve her of her crimes and enable her to atone for them, revived her, gave her human appearance, and then killed her again. Taiwan renews plea for US to sell fighter jets AFP

TAIPEI (AFP) – Taiwan’s President Ma Ying-jeou on Thursday renewed calls to Washington to sell the island an upgraded version of the F16 fighter, following a Pentagon report warning of China’s growing military might. “We hope the US will consider selling Taiwan F16 C/D fighter jets to balance the military edge leaning towards China,” Ma was quoted by state-funded Central News Agency as saying. Ma told visiting US Congressman Roland Burris that Taiwan wished to acquire the jets not to prepare itself to start a war but to defend itself and ensure the island’s

safety, the report said. His comments came after the Pentagon said in an annual report to Congress on Monday that China’s military build-up against Taiwan has “continued unabated” despite improving political relations. “The balance of... military forces continues to shift in the mainland’s favour,” the report said. The report covered developments

in 2009, before the United States approved a 6.4 billion-dollar arms package for the island in January. Taiwan applied to the US government to buy 66 F-16 fighters in early 2007, but observers say Washington has held up the deal for fear of angering Beijing. China opposes any arms sales to Taiwan, which it considers a part of its territory awaiting reunification, by force if necessary, even though the two sides split in 1949 after a civil war and have been governed separately since. However, ties have improved markedly since Ma took office in 2008 on a Beijingfriendly platform.

US teen hopeful for peace after N.Korea visit AFP

BEIJING (AFP) – A US teenager who spent a week in North Korea as part of a mission to see a peace forest planted on the tense Korean border said Thursday his trip had given him “hope” for the future of the peninsula. Jonathan Lee, a 13-year-old ethnic Korean who hails from the southern US state of Mississippi, said he felt safe and had been treated well during his week-long visit to one of the most secretive states in the world. Lee had said before the trip on his website that he was heading to Pyongyang with a letter for North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il, proposing the creation of a “children’s peace forest” in the demilitarised zone dividing North and South. The trip comes amid high cross-border tensions, which grew after South Korea and the United States accused the North in May of torpedoing one of Seoul’s warships with the loss of 46 lives. “My letter suggesting this (idea) was passed on to Chairman Kim Jong-Il along

with my book as a gift to him,” Lee told reporters at Beijing airport. “I went to several places but the place that made the biggest impression on me was the DMZ,” he said. “While at the DMZ, I spoke of my hope of having a children’s peace forest. My suggestion for the motto is ‘Above politics, above conflicts, above borders, above ideology’.” Lee has sent letters to South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak, US President Barack Obama and China’s President Hu Jintao, explaining his idea for the peace forest of fruit and chestnut trees on the world’s last Cold War frontier. The surrounding area is heavily fortified with concrete, barbed wire, land mines and soldiers from both North and South Korea. “It’s all about giving hope to the people and children around the world,” Lee said. “On this trip, I discovered that both sides want reunification, and that Korea is one, so I see hope on the Korean peninsula.”

The incident occurred Wednesday at the Tafalla arena in the northern region of Navarra during an event attended by about 3,500 spectators, in which mostly young people try to get a bull to charge at them so they can dodge it. Unlike standard bullfights, the bulls are not killed in these events. The bull had already attempted to jump into the stands twice. After damaging a horn, he was about to be returned to the corral and replaced with another bull when he tried a third time and succeeded.

The regional government said in a statement Thursday that three people remained in hospitals in the regional capital of Pamplona, best known for its annual San Fermin running of the bulls festival. The injured included a 10-year-old boy who was in intensive care after the bull reportedly fell on him. Another man was gored in the back and was said to be in stable condition. In all, 40 people were treated, primarily for minor injuries. “What could have been a tragedy ended up as a big fright,” Tafalla mayor Cristina Sota was cited as saying in the main regional newspaper, Diario de Navarra. Coarsely grate the steamed taro. Mix this with

TOKYO - The Bank of Japan will consider additional easing measures as the government mulls fresh approaches to deal with a rising yen and falling share prices, a report said Thursday. The central bank may expand its programme to provide funds to financial institutions at a 0.1-percent fixed rate for three months, the Sankei Shimbun said. Such a measure, if adopted, should help lower interest rates in the market place and bring down the yen, the newspaper said. The BoJ may also lengthen

the lending period for the funds to six months from the current three months, the Sankei said. Some market players have speculated that the central bank could announce its new measures this week, before a reported meeting between BoJ governor Masaaki Shirakawa and Prime Minister Naoto Kan next week.

Kan and Shirakawa are expected to discuss steady appreciation of the yen, which recently hit 15year highs against the dollar, threatening a fragile export-led recovery. Kan is also expected to decide an outline of new stimulus measures as early as September in a bid to safeguard Japan’s recovery, local media have said.

NEW YORK - Unruffled by the moribund US housing sector, New York’s residential property market is booming. With mortgage rates and property prices at historic lows, the city’s affluent residents are cashing on the economic conjuncture to get a pad at bargain values. Real estate agencies are reporting a surge in activity in private home sales in the Big Apple in recent months. “Right now we are actually experiencing a pretty strong market... A lot of activity, a lot of signing contracts,” said Pamela Liebman, CEO of The Corcoran Group, New York’s largest residential real estate agency. “This has been one of my best years,” says Ariel Cohen, executive vice-president at Prudential Douglas Elliman, another agency. The housing sector was at the heart of the financial crisis that plunged the US economy into recession in December 2007. Across the country, the sector has been struggling to recover from the price collapse. New York City also felt the impact of the recession with an average drop of some 20 percent in apartment prices from their precrisis peak and an extremely low sales volume in 2008 and most of 2009. But while property prices

have remained mostly flat, sales in the Big Apple have surged unlike anywhere else in the country. A report by the Real Estate Board of New York (REBNY) showed a 72 percent jump in the total value of house sales to 7.6 billion dollars in the second quarter of 2010 compared to the same period the previous year. Apartment sales volume in Manhattan increased by 82 percent over the same period, it said. The accelerated activity in New York, where the average price per square foot stands at 1,061 dollars (11,420 dollars per square meter), was due mostly to the high earnings in the city’s financial sector in past months, statistics show. “We are lucky in New York because Wall Street has been doing so well in the past year and a half and this money is holding the market somewhat stable,” said Michael Moskowitz, CEO of Equity Now, a Manhattan-based mortgage lender. Brokers are also starting to see more foreign investment in New York’s real estate market as the euro began to rise against the dollar. Another key factor stimulating the market has been the extremely low mortgage rates. Interest rates on a 30-year “jumbo loan” can be as low as 4.375 percent and 3.75 percent for 15-year loans, according to mortgage broker Mark Lazar, vice-president of Allied Financial. As the government is still debating what steps to take in order to boost the battered housing sector, banks remain extremely cautious and prudent in approving mortgages. Lazar said he turns down almost one third of people contacting him seeking a mortgage because they do not meet the basic criteria set by banks. “I tell them you are not mortgageable,” he said. “Banks are reluctant to lend. They feel it is better to limit the lendings for now until the road is cleared” by new legislation.

NEW YORK - US auto giant General Motors on Wednesday took the first step to selling shares to the public, seeking to free itself from government control after pulling back from the abyss of bankruptcy. Filing for what may be one of world’s largest initial public offerings (IPO) of shares, GM did not disclose the number of stocks that will be offered or the price range. But the market expects GM to raise between 12 and 16 billion dollars, with the potential to be the second largest IPO in US history, after the credit card giant Visa, which raised more than 19 billion dollars in March 2008. The landmark step also bodes well for President Barack Obama as it offers the American public some hard evidence for the success of his economic policies to pull the country out of its worst economic crisis in decades. In the filing Wednesday with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, GM said it planned to apply for listings on the New York Stock Exchange and the Toronto Stock Exchange. “The amount of securities offered will be determined by market conditions and other factors at the time of the offering,” GM said in a statement. “The number of shares to be offered and the price range for the offering have not yet been determined,” it added. The stock sale is expected to take place late this year and the company — which was part of the prestigious Dow Jones Industrial Index from 1925 to 2008 — will retrieve its old trading ticker symbol of GM. The Treasury Department said separately it “will retain the right, at all times, to decide whether

For Obama, the IPO filing fits neatly into a campaign to persuade skeptical voters that massive government spending — however loathsome — kept US firms and the economy alive. A summary posted outside the courtroom indicated attorneys would argue a motion on whether to seize the passport of the 9-monthold daughter. He told New York’s WSYR-TV, “You don’t just go: ‘Hey I don’t feel like paying anybody.’ I think with a guy like Mike, he bit off more than he could chew.” Michaels is now going to court to show he’s not to blame. PARIS - A tsunami that hit the Pacific islands of Samoa and Tonga last year was generated by three earthquakes unleashed by a seismic mechanism that has never been observed before, scientists said on Wednesday. The September 29, 2009 disaster killed 186 people in Samoa, American Samoa and northern Tonga when waves rearing as high as 15 metres (49 feet) flattened villages and resorts. Seismologists initially pinned the blame on a massive quake of magnitude 8.0, later upgraded to 8.1, occurring 18 kilometres (11.2 miles) below the sea on the Tonga Trench.But within weeks, doubt soon set in, as a single quake could not explain the pattern of tsunami waves and their height variations. Reporting Wednesday in the British journal Nature, US experts said they found the 8.1 temblor unleashed two more extremely powerful quakes in very quick succession. Each measured 7.8 magnitude and occurred close to each other, at a location more than 50 kilometres (31 miles) from the initial event. “When we looked at the data, it

turned out it wasn’t just one great earthquake but three large earthquakes that happened within two minutes of one another,” said Keith Koper, director of the University of Utah Seismograph Stations. “The two quakes that were hidden by the first quake ended up being responsible for some of the damage and tsunami waves.” That one quake can cause another quake is not in itself new. “Domino” quakes are notorious, for instance, on the Sunda Trench off the Indonesian island of Sumatra and on Turkey’s North Anatolian Fault. But what happened at the Tonga Trench occurred among distinctly different types of faults, with implications for understanding how tsunamis

are caused, the researchers said. The Tongan Trench lies at the conjunction of the Pacific plate and a microplate called the Tongan block. Pushing westwards, the Pacific plate collides with the Tongan block before diving beneath it, a movement called subduction. The plates are moving towards other at 20 centimetres (12 inches) a year, the fastest of any such convergence in the world. But the motion has been historically smooth, and the previous 8.0-plus quake in this area was in 1917. Scientists were thus deeply surprised when the 2009 disaster happened. The sleuths found that the 8.1 quake occurred when part of the Pacific plate broke apart close to the entrance where that plate dives beneath the Tongan block. In seismological terms, this is called a “normal-faulting” quake, meaning that the ground is pulled apart along the fault. Shaking from the 8.1 quake then triggered the nearly simultaneous 7.8 quakes in the subduction zone, where the Pacific plate was already far beneath the Tongan block.

WASHINGTON – Ninetypound birds that once lived in South America wielded their giant, sharp beaks in quick jabs, much like the boxing tactics of Muhammad Ali, according to a new study. Originally dubbed terror birds because of their fearsome head, the flightless creatures were built to strike forward, attacking their prey with sudden jabs, researchers reported in the online journal PLoS ONE. In other words, while the birds couldn’t float like a butterfly, they could sting like Ali. “These guys were not sluggers, they couldn’t go in and grapple with prey. They had to stand back and dance around and make hatchet-like jabs,” Lawrence Witmer of the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine said

An engineering analysis showed that the bird was well-adapted to strike with its beak and pull back, but would have been badly strained had it tried to shake prey from side-toside. Also, it’s hollow beak could be damaged by hard sideways shaking. And while it’s bite would not have been a quite as strong as that of a similar-sized mammal, it could compensate by using the beak like an ax, according to the researchers led by Witmer and Federico J. Degrange of Museo de La Plata in Argentina. The researchers were a bit surprised by the findings, Witmer said. The thinking going in was “these were pretty tough guys, and they absolutely were, but they had to be kind of careful,” he said. “Being a predator is a really risky business. A prey animal is going to fight back.” He said the researchers approached the study both anatomically and by using engineering to simulate potential behaviors. “The cool thing was we both came up with the same answer,” he said. “And a surprising thing is we could figure it out ... and feel pretty good about it.” Andalgalornis was one of a variety of different sized terror birds that lived in South America at the time. At least one larger type, Titanis, invaded North America, but the animals later disappeared. The research was funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation, the Australian Research Council, the Australia and Pacific Science Foundation and the National Fund for Scientific and Technological Investigation of Argentina.

IRVINE, California - Michael Phelps held on for a “painful” victory in the 200m butterfly at the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships on Wednesday, holding off Nick D’Arcy with the fastest time in the world this year. “That was painful,” said the 14-time Olympic gold medallist, who has been battling all season after a lengthy break from training. Phelps led at every turn and won in 1min 54.11sec, but said he could feel rivals closing in the final meters. “I felt a splash of water from the lane next to me, I was just thinking ‘Please don’t let me get run down,’” Phelps said. “The fitness level is just not there.” Even so, he had enough to hold off Australia’s D’Arcy, who was second in 1:54.73. Japan’s Takeshi Matsuda was third in 1:54.81. Cesar Cielo, the 50m freestyle Olympic gold medallist, departed from his signature sprint freestyle events to lead a Brazilian one-two in the 50m butterfly. Cielo won in a sizzling 23.03sec, with Nicholas Santos second in 23.33 and South African veteran Roland Schoeman third in 23.39. “It’s a wonderful surprise,” Cielo said after notching the fastest time of the year in the event. “I’m not really a butterflyer, but anything that’s a 50 I find a way to go fast. World record-holder Aaron Peirsol made the most of a second chance in the 100m backstroke, winning in 53.31 after Lochte’s decision to scratch gave him a slot in the final. “I wanted to make the most of the opportunity,” said Peirsol, who had one of the top eight times in the heats but was bumped to the consolation final as the third-fastest American. Glock cagey on future, says Toyota gave up too soon As uncertainty persists over whether or not Timo Glock will remain on-board at F1 2010 newcomer Virgin Racing for a second consecutive season next year, the German has reflected that his previous employer Toyota walked away from the sport just as it was on the verge of finally achieving success.

Glock competed for the winless, big-budget Japanese manufacturer in 2008 and 2009, ascending the podium on three occasions as he established himself as a credible contender at the highest level. To move from an organisation whose test team was larger than Virgin’s current race team was admittedly something of a culture shock, and the 28year-old argues that in his opinion at least, Toyota threw in the towel at precisely the wrong moment. “It is different, but I just concentrate on my job,” he mused. “It’s working quite well [at Virgin] and I’m happy with it. There are some positive elements such as a smaller team being able to make quicker decisions compared to a big team like Toyota, which is sometimes like a big ship – you can’t steer it. What was frustrating was that in the end Toyota pulled out when we were on a good path up to the top five with a good baseline for 2010. Lauda slams Ferrari tactics FORMER world champion Niki Lauda has once again hit out at Ferrari’s use of team orders at the German Grand Prix - claiming its actions ‘mocked’ Formula 1’s fans and deserve punishing. With Ferrari scheduled to face a hearing of the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council next month for ordering Felipe Massa to sacrifice the lead to Fernando Alonso, the matter is still a major talking point in F1. Lauda, who won two of his three world titles for Ferrari, says he remains unhappy about the tactics of the Maranello team – which he says are in complete contrast to the way championship leaders Red Bull Racing have gone about competing. “You have two models of how to race in Formula 1 as a team,” Lauda said in an interview with the official Formula 1 website. “If you approach it politically then you are in the Ferrari mould. Or you try to give both your drivers equal opportunities and the fans an exciting sport, as Red Bull are doing in letting their drivers compete with each other. “That is what makes this sport a crowd puller because they see the best guys in the best cars racing each other with a ‘may the best man win’ philosophy - and not mocking the fans with a collusive result. But I am aware that this is a topic where opinions differ.” Speaking more specifically about the German GP, Lauda said: “What they did at Hockenheim was against all rules. Either the rules are changed or everybody observes them. “What they’ve done is wrong and they got an immediate punishment - and they will get a pasting from the [FIA] World [Motor Sport] Council, that is for sure.”

We could race them at Silverstone, and

for Germany we had another step in the aero package. I expected it would be tight, but I was positive. I was fastest among the new teams on Friday, but unfortunately on Saturday it was chaos; we had a massive problem with the gearbox, broke third gear and that meant changing the ‘box and going back five places on the grid, to last. “We didn’t get any running in final practice, therefore, and went blind into qualifying. I had a very good first lap, was in front of both Lotus’, then came in, changed the tyres and the mechanics saw that the rear right brake caliper was leaking fluid. It was too risky to go out again and Lotus went quicker when the track improved, but it all came right in the race and I also managed to qualify as fastest new team car in Hungary, even though we were still struggling a little on the bumps.” Praising the customer Cosworth engine in the back of the car as ‘really good’ and having presented ‘no problems’, Glock acknowledged that the strict in-season testing ban has scarcely facilitated Virgin’s task this year – but he stressed that whilst he is ‘happy’ there at the moment, with overtures from the likes of Renault once again for 2011, he will only remain happy to stay provided the improvements keep on coming.
