Sony pulls Spacey film from festival, going ahead with December release

LOS ANGELES - Sony Pictures on Monday withdrew a movie starring Kevin Spacey from a Los Angeles film festival following sexual misconduct allegations against the actor, but said it was going ahead with a planned U.S. movie theater release in December.

“All the Money in the World,” about the 1973 kidnapping of teenager John Paul Getty III, features Spacey as his grandfather, the late U.S. oil billionaire Jean Paul Getty.

The film was due to have a red carpet world premiere at the American Film Institute’s (AFI) annual festival in Los Angeles on Nov. 16.

“Given the current allegations surrounding one of its actors and out of respect for those impacted, it would be inappropriate to celebrate at a gala at this difficult time. Accordingly, the film will be withdrawn,” Sony’s TriStar Pictures unit said in an emailed statement.

Spacey’s representatives did not return a request for comment on Monday regarding Sony’s decision. Reuters was unable to independently confirm any of the allegations.

The Sony statement said there were 800 other actors, writers and crew members involved in the movie, and the film would open wide as planned on Dec. 22.

Spacey apologized last month to actor Anthony Rapp, who accused him of trying to seduce him in 1986 when Rapp was 14. Spacey’s representatives later said he was seeking unspecified treatment.

CNN reported last week that eight current and former employees of the Netflix TV show “House of Cards,” who were not identified, alleged sexual misconduct against Spacey, the TV show’s star.

AFI said in a statement that it supported Sony’s decision.

Netflix said on Friday that it had severed ties with Spacey because of the allegations.

It said it would not be involved in further production of “House of Cards” with Spacey. Producer Media Rights Capital said Spacey had been suspended from the political show. (rtr)

After WhatsApp threat, Indonesia steps up Internet obscenity purge

JAKARTA - Indonesia said on Tuesday it will summon executives of messaging services and search engines, including Google, to demand they remove obscene content, but dropped a threat to block WhatsApp Messenger after “GIF” images were taken off the service. The Internet is already partly censored in Indonesia, but the latest steps mark an escalation against a background of growing conservatism in the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation.

“We will call all providers, including Google to clean up their network,” said Semuel Pangerapan, a director general at Indonesia’s communication and informatics ministry. Google, which is owned by Alphabet Inc, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The ministry vowed on Monday to block Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp Messenger within 48 hours if the service did not ensure that obscene Graphics

Interchange Format (GIF) images were removed.

WhatsApp said on Monday that message encryption prevented it from monitoring the animated graphics files, known as GIFs, that are available on the app through third-party services. It said it had asked the government instead to work with those providers, which integrate their technology into WhatsApp to allow users to enter keywords to search for GIFs.

Tenor Inc, one of the third parties, said on Tuesday it had “already implemented a fix for the content issues”.

Users of Whatsapp Messenger on iPhones were unable to access Tenor GIFs on Tuesday. “We see now that they have done what we asked,” Pangerapan said. “Therefore, we won’t block them because they have responded to us.”

WhatsApp Messenger is widely used in Indonesia. Civil servants

and ministers, including Minister of Communication and Information Rudiantara, are among the heaviest users. Giphy Inc., a New York City GIFs company that also works with WhatsApp, did not respond to requests for comment.

Giphy offers partners a feature to filter inappropriate images.

Indonesia’s warning did not appear to target Gboard, a keyboard app developed by Google that provides comparable GIF search results but must be installed separately from WhatsApp on most devices. Rudiantara has vowed in the past to clamp down on pornography sites and, after meetings with representatives of Google,

Twitter Inc and Facebook in August, he said his ministry’s priority was to protect Indonesians from content that promoted radicalism, terrorism and drugs. Rudiantara, who uses one name, said however that the government was not trying to foster “a regime of censorship”.

Invoking harmony for the universe, pekelem ritual held at Tanah Lot Temple

TABANAN - The clanging sound of holy bells and the fragrance of flowers and incense colored the temple area of ??Tanah Lot, Tabanan, on Monday afternoon (Nov. 6). Mantras and ritual prayers were chanted as part of the pekelem ceremony that was officiated over by Ida Rsi Agung Suryayana from Griya Candra Kusuma, Munggu village, Mengwi, Mangupura and Ida Rsi Istri Candra Kusuma Dewi.

The ceremony aimed at achieving harmpny for the universe ran smoothly even though there is fear in Bali about the the alert level for Mount Agung.

“This ceremony is meant to harmonize of the universe. It is not only intended for Tabanan alone, but for the whole island of Bali”, explained Ida Rsi Istri Candra Kusuma Dewi. Ida Rsi further explained that this pekelem ritual was classified a a medium level one and and involved the sacrifice of goats, geese, ducks, chicken and black ayaban bebangkit, black suci, an apologetic ritual, caru berumbun as well as purificatory paraphernalia and a procession.

The pakelem ceremony was commenced with a prayerful procession from a spot representing Tanah Lot Temple to an appropriate location on Tanah Lot Beach where the pakelem ritual sacrifice took place by drowning the animals in the sea One of the residents appointed as the coordinator of the pakelem ceremony in Tanah Lot, I Made Suarnata, explained that the pakelem ceremony is performed as form of gratitude to the lord of the sea, Lord Varuna and to the Queen of the South coast and to ask for salvation. Similar rituals were also held at three other places representing nyegara gunung (ocean-moutain); Ponjok Batu Temple (Buleleng), Tirta Empululu (Jembrana) and Lebih Beach (Gianyar).

Suarnata said the pakelem ceremony was performed based on the initiative of a number of Balinese people including hobbyists, the Bali Organic Association (BOA) Foundation, and volunteers of Sustainable Bali with support from the local government of Tabanan through the Public Welfare Agency. “The Hindu community in Bali believes that Bali is guarded in all

directions. We are giving such prayers at a number of points in Bali that are considered to have good universal vibrations, to ask for salvation – to avoid any form of disasters”, he explained.

Division Head of the Tabanan Public Welfare Agency, Made Irma Yanti Sundari, welcomed the ceremony as she said it serves the positive purpose of asking for safety and for disasters to be avoided. Similarly these ceremonies are meant to ask for the salvation of mankind and the entire universe and particularly that the volcanic activity of Mount Agung subside and that no disaster occur.

The Pakelem ceremony at Tanah Lot also drew the attention of a number of tourists that happened to be crowd this ??famous tourist attraction in the Tabanan and many of them took photos of the series of rituals being performed. (kmb28)

AMLAPURA - The seismicity of deep and shallow volcanic activity remains high following the decrease in the alert level of Mount Agung on October 29 from level IV (warning) to level III (watch).

Visually, the solfatara smoke coming out of the bottom of the crater continues to reach an altitude of

200-300 meters from the peak of the great mountain.

MANGUPURA - The decrease of the alert level of Mount Agung to level 3 (watch) is being taken advantage of by Badung’s district government to restore tourism in their region. The Badung Tourism Office has been sent to potential tourists markets in Manchester and London to promote tourism in Bali.

Head of the Badung Tourism Office, I Made Badra, said that his agency is continuously working on letting potential tourism markets know that the alert level for Mount Agung has decreased to ‘watch’ level and that regardless, the world famous tourist destination of Badung is safe form the danger of an eruption anyway.

“We did Sales Missions and Table Top in Manchester yesterday.

Today, we attended the World Travel Market (WTM) London, which is the second largest market after ITB Berlin. We are here to convince the European market not to delay their trips to Bali, especially to Badung”, said Made Badra, when contacted on Monday (Nov. 6). Tourism players in both these countries understand the condition of tourism in Bali amid the the threat of an eruption of Mount Agung. “We have explained that the alert level for Mount Agung has been decreased to level 3 and buyers now understand this .We are optimistic about being able to increase the number of tourists who visit Badung by 24 percent in 2018” he explained.

The Badung Tourism Office, he said that been continuously promoting tourism in Badung to potential markets such as Britain that was ranked first for the last two years years in terms of the number of direct visitors to Bali. “We got a positive response from buyers and tour operators from the City of Manchester.

Hopefully, we can do such promotion every year so that the tour operators can get the latest information about

the actual conditions in Bali”, added Badra.

Their target is to have a total of 5, 850, 000 foreign visitors in 2017. So far there have been a total of 4, 446, 437 tourists from January to September this year, so 76.18 percent of the goal for the whole year.

“Our target can be reached as long as Mount Agung does not erupt. The warning status has in fact impacted the number of visitors, with some cancellations though the numbers have remained relatively stable” he said. For the same periode last year, there has actually been an increase of 23.18 percent in the number of visitors. As of September visitors to Badung are still predominantly from China with 1, 217, 719, folowed by Australia (853, 334), Japan (204,210 visits), India (203,838 visits) and England (148,409 visits).

“Now that an additional 11 direct international flights routes have been added to Bali, we are more optimistic about the number of tourists continuing to increase” addd Badra. Regional Secretary of Badung, Wayan Adi Arnawa said that the Mount Agung situation has impacted tourism in Bali and ultimately the revenue of Badung whose regionally generated revenue (PAD) is very much dependent on tourism.

“Since we live from tourism, I have asked the regional development planning board (Bappeda) to look into the details of the impact this situation has had. Hopefully it has not been too significant”, said Arnawa.

The target for the regionally generated revenue of Badung in the regional budget 2017 is IDR 5.2 trillion, while in the general budget policy and provisional budget plafond priority (KUA-PPAS) 2017 the revenue is targeted at IDR 5.7 trillion and regional budget at IDR 6.2 trillion. (kmb27)

the alert status of the mountain is lowered there will definetly be evaluations conducted based on the results of the data collected by the devices used to monitor Mount Agung.

“Before reducing the alert level to watch evaluations are conducted.

If the seismicity continues to decline and other tools also show a decrease in activity there is the possibility that the alert level will be reduced again. However, so far, the alert level still remains at ‘ watch’ as the seismicity still remains high’ he said. (kmb41)

Stephen Hawking says technology could end poverty but urges caution LISBON - Technology can hopefully reverse some of the harm caused to the planet by industrialisation and help end disease and poverty, but artificial intelligence (AI) needs to be controlled, physicist Stephen Hawking said on Monday.

Hawking, a British cosmologist who was diagnosed with motor neuron disease aged 21, said technology could transform every aspect of life but cautioned that artificial intelligence poses new challenges.

He said artificial intelligence and robots are already threatening millions of jobs - but this new revolution could be used to help society and for the good of the world such as alleviating poverty and disease.

“The rise of AI could be the worst or the best thing that has happened for humanity,” Hawking said via telepresence at opening night of the 2017 Web Summit in Lisbon that is attended by about 60,000 people.

“We simply need to be aware of the dangers, identify them, employ the best possible practice and management and prepare for its consequences well in advance.”

Hawking’ s comments come during an escalating

debate about the pro and cons of artificial intelligence, a term used to describe machines with a computer code that learns as it goes.

Silicon Valley entrepreneur Elon Musk, who is chief executive of electric car maker Tesla Inc and rocket company SpaceX, has warned that AI is a threat to humankind’s existence.

But Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, in a rare interview recently, told the WSJ Magazine that there was nothing to panic about.

Hawking said everyone has a role to play in making sure that this generation and the next are fully engaged with the study of science at an early level to create “a better world for the whole human race”.

“We need to take learning beyond a theoretical discussion of how AI should be, and take action to make sure we plan for how it can be,” said Hawking, who communicates via a cheek muscle linked to a sensor and computerized voice system.

“You all have the potential to push the boundaries of what is accepted, or expected, and to think big. We stand on the threshold of a brave new world. It is an exciting - if precarious - place to be and you are the pioneers,” he said. (rtr)

Military district personnel collect tens of bags of garbage

CALIFORNIA - Apple Inc’s new flagship iPhone X makes the company more money per phone than its iPhone 8 model, according to an analysis, which found the iPhone X’s flashier parts cost Apple 25 percent more than the iPhone 8, but that it retailed 43 percent higher.

The iPhone X smartphone costs $357.50 to make and sells for $999, giving it a gross margin of 64 percent, according to TechInsights, a firm that tears down technology devices and analyzes the parts inside. The iPhone 8 sells for $699 and has a gross margin of 59 percent.

The finding is surprising because technology products tend to become more profitable as they age and the parts for them drop in cost.

The iPhone X is a brand new design that went on sale on Friday, to apparently strong demand, while the iPhone 8 is an update on last year’s iPhone 7, which itself was similar to the iPhone 6 released in 2014.

Apple declined to comment on TechInsights’ analysis.

Apple is unique in the electronics industry for its ability to charge a premium price for its latest devices and for its ability to maintain that price even when selling devices through third parties like telecom carriers, said Al Cowsky, the costing analyst for TechInsights, which planned to post the results to its site late on Monday.

“Apple can be different here because they are the 800 pound gorilla,” Cowsky said.

Several of Apple’s design choices for the iPhone X pushed up its price. In particular, its 5.8-inch (14.8 cm) edge-to-edge display and associated parts cost $65.50, compared with $36 for the iPhone 8’s 4.7-inch display, the analysis found.

That is largely because the iPhone 8 uses older LCD technology, while the iPhone X uses what is called “Super AMOLED” technology, which allows for more vivid colors and a thinner overall design.

Another pricey choice was the stainless steel chassis of the iPhone X, which cost $36 versus $21.50 for the aluminum housing of the iPhone 8. Cowsky said the steel is less likely than aluminum to bend when flexed, a problem that dogged the iPhone 6 when it came out.

“This is their lesson learned from that,” he said. (rtr)

BANGLI — Dozens of Indonesian military (TNI) personnel from the 1626/Bangli Military District did a cleanup around Lake Batur on Sunday (Nov. 5). The cleanup activity that was done manually involved TNI personnel and residents of Buahan village yielded dozens of bags of garbage.

Aside from plastic waste, organic garbage was also removed from the lakeshore. Some garbage was burned on the spot and some was transported to a nearby landfill.

Commander of the 1626 / Bangli Military District, Andy Pranoto, accompanied by Chief of Staff, Suka Prajaka and Territorial Section Officer, Ida Bagus Mahendra, said that Lake Batur looks beautiful at first glance but a closer look reveals that the largest lake in Bali is surrounded by loads of garbage. Bangli’S Military District therefore took the initiative to conduct a cleanup along with residents of Buanhan village in order to maintain the sustainability of the lake.

Gianyar who asked the local military command to get involved in increasing the attractiveness of Lake Batur. The request was submitted by the regent during the military district commander’s farewell-welcome speech recently. “So, this activity basically aims to maintain the environmental sustainability of Lake Batur”, he said.

Since it was done manually, Commander Pranoto admitted that the results of cleanup was less than maximal as only garbage along the edge of the lake could be collected. In the future, his institution will invite related institutions in Bangli’s district government to get together to clean up the lake using mechanical tools. That way, Lake Batur can become free of plastic waste as well as weeds. Commander Pranoto also said that he hope that the cleanup activities carried out by the Bangli Military District on Lake Batur will be able to raise public awareness about caring more about the lake environment.

DENPASAR - Bali’s Consumer Protection Foundation (YLPK) has asked that the government guarantee the security of consumer’s personal data in relation to the government policies requiring consumers of prepaid cell-phone cards to re-register as of October 31, 2017. This is to ensure that personal data belonging to consumers are not abused for commercial or noncommercial purposes without the consumers’ consent as the owner of the personal data.

Consumers need to made aware of the new policy. “Dissemination of information regarding this policy needs to be more intensive. Consumer’s should not loose access to their numbers just because they were not aware of the new regulation”, said I Putu Armaya, Director of YLPK Bali, on Sunday (Nov. 5).

There is fear that re-registration

will not be able to control the amount of cell phone numbers nor the misuse of cell-phone numbers for criminal activities. So far, consumers are still allowed to have many phone numbers. Every consumer is allowed to have up to three numbers per operator. So with six different cell operators this means that each person is allowed a total of 18 different cell-phone numbers.

The huge number of cell-phones numbers that reaches upward of 350 million, said Armaya is caused by promotional deals and tariff wars and between cell service operators. Consumers can be mislead by these tariff wars and promotions.

The government must therefor crack down on these tariff wars and promotions that mislead consumers. “There needs to be more than disciplinary measures and re-registration”, he said. (kmb42)

Until September 2017, dengue cases decrease

DENPASAR — Until September, dengue fever cases show a decrease compared to the same month in the previous year. There were 885 cases until last September 2017 while until September 2016 amounted to 2,130 cases. The decrease is caused by various anticipatory measures having been done starting from the eradication of mosquito nests (PSN), the spread of larvicide powder up to the formation of independent larva monitoring officers.

This was conveyed by Head of the Denpasar Health Agency, Luh Putu Sri Armini, accompanied by Division Head of Disease Prevention and Control, I.B. Gede Eka Putra, when met in her office, on Monday (Nov. 6).

According to Sri Armini, although there is a decrease in the case, the Denpasar municipality continues to implement mass fogging considering that November and December are rainy season and will result in many puddles such as containers, gutters, plastic containers or tin cans, fruit skins, stone pits, etc. Certainly they have a very potential place for Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes to nest and proliferate causing the increased transmission of dengue disease that often generates extraordinary events.

To alert and anticipate the dengue attack, people need to maintain environmental sanitation inside and outside their home. One of the most effective and efficient activities for that purpose is the eradication of mosquito nests. “We always disseminate to the public to continuously maintain hygiene, especially by implementing eradication of mosquito nests plus,” said Sri Armini.

She predicted the case to rise sharply along with the coming of rainy season and the peak of the case is predicted to occur during the period of April-May. To that end, the Denpasar municipality through the Health Agency together with the community conducts the eradication of mosquito nests movement before the season of transmission by the eradication above and mass larvacidation in water containers being difficult to be cleaned since early September. To do the activity, her agency involved 474 larva monitoring officers and coordinator and 44,242 independent monitoring officers having been formed through Gema Petik (independent larva monitoring officer) program and other community members.

Considering Denpasar belongs to a dengue endemic area where the case always occurs every year and tends to result in an outbreak, it is determined to further maximize the efforts to prevent and control the dengue. Local Tabana fisherman I Nyoman Suarjana, explained that before going back out to sea he has to clean out the plastic trash that gets caught up in his nets.

There is not much he can do during the rainy season as his nets are not filled with fish or lobster but instead are filled with garbage.

“Marine debris is carried to the beach by rainwater, so my nets get filled with garbage”, said this man from Yeh Gangga hamlet, Sudimara village.

Besides, the waves at sea have

not been friendly for the last week, so he has not gone out to sea. “Today, because the weather is good, we planned to go out to sea, but I have no choice but to clean the garbage out of my nets first”, he explained.

Actually, he and other fishermen often do beach clean-ups but the garage keeps coming as rainwater carries it from inland.

Although some parts his net have been damaged by the garbage, he still uses it as a new net is quite expensive at IDR 230,000 per set.

He has to use nets to catch lobster as he can no longer use bamboo traps as small lobster also get caught. “ We catch one big lobster for every ten small ones. We release the small ones because only lobster weighing more than 200 grams can be exported”, said Suarjana.

Lobster traps also cost more to operate and are not worth it for the amount of money made from the catches. It is therefor no wonder that fishermen at Yeh Gangga almost all use nets instead of traps today. (kmb28)

The men in the remote Manus Island facility have defied attempts

by Australia and Papua New Guinea to close the camp, refusing to move to three transit centres despite having little food or drinking water.

Dozens of them also need medical help, three asylum seekers said, in a stand-off that the United Nations has described as a “looming humanitarian crisis”.

The men have repeatedly said they would not move to the transit camps because they feared PNG residents on the island may attack, or that the will be resettled elsewhere in PNG or

another developing nation.

The court rejected the challenge on behalf of one of the detainees because it said power, water and food were available at the three transit centres, Ben Lomai, a lawyer for the detainee who lodged the application, told Reuters.

Kate Schuetze, Pacific researcher for rights group Amnesty International, warned conditions could deteriorate “catastrophically”.

“The lives of these men, who are only asking for their rights to dignity and safety, are at serious risk,” Schuetze said in a statement.

The men, who include asylum seekers from Afghanistan, Iran, Myanmar, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Syria, were last given food on Oct. 29 and have been relying on sporadic aid from Manus island locals and rainwater.

Several of the detainees told Reuters Papua New Guinea’s navy had blocked access for islanders trying to deliver supplies in the past few days. Representatives for Papua New Guinea Immigration Minister Petrus Thomas did not respond immediately to a request for comment about the claim.

Behrouz Boochani, a Kurdish journalist from Iran who has been

detained on Manus island for more than four years, said 90 of the men were sick and required “urgent” medical treatment.

“They have infection, stomach ache and diarrhoea because of dirty water,” Boochani told Reuters.

Despite the conditions, several of the men said they would continue to defy efforts to get them to leave, frustrating Australia’s attempts to close one of two controversial detention centres it uses to detain asylum seekers who arrive by boat.

The Manus island camp, and another on the tiny Pacific island nation of Nauru, have been the cornerstones of Australia’s controversial immigration policies, which has been strongly criticised by the United Nations and

rights groups.

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said before the court ruling on Tuesday the men were only refusing to move to the new transit centres on the encouragement of advocates.

“There are alternative facilities available of a very high quality with food and all of the facilities,” Turnbull told Australian Broadcasting Corporation radio.

The relocation of the men is designed to give the United States time to complete vetting of candidates as part of a refugee swap deal that Australia hopes will see it no longer responsible for the detention of nearly 1,400 asylum seekers who have been classified as refugees. (rtr)

DUBAI - Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said on Tuesday that Iran’s supply of rockets to militias in Yemen is an act of “direct military aggression”, Saudi state news agency SPA reported.

The supply of rockets to the Iranallied rebel Houthi movement could “constitute an act of war against the Kingdom,” SPA quoted the crown prince as saying in a telephone call with the British Foreign Minister Boris Johnson.

Saudi air defence forces intercepted a ballistic missile they said was fired towards Riyadh on Saturday by the Houthi militia which controls large parts of neighbouring Yemen, including the capital Sanaa, in the

country’s civil war.

Iran has denied it was behind the missile launch, rejecting the Saudi and U.S. statements condemning Tehran as “destructive and provocative” and “slanders”.

In an interview with CNN television on Monday, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir accused the armed Lebanese Hezbollah group of firing the missile at Riyadh from Houthi-held territory.

“With regards to the missile ... that was launched on Saudi territory, it was an Iranian missile launched by Hezbollah from territory occupied by the Houthis in Yemen.”

He said the missile was similar to one launched in July at Yanbu

in Saudi Arabia and was manufactured in Iran, disassembled and smuggled into Yemen, then reassembled by the operatives of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards and Hezbollah, “then it was launched into Saudi Arabia.”

In reaction to the missile, the Saudi-led military coalition fighting against the Houthi movement in Yemen said on Monday it would close all air, land and sea ports to the Arabian Peninsula country.

The move is likely to deepen a humanitarian crisis in Yemen that according to the United Nations has pushed some seven million people to the brink of famine and left nearly 900,000 infected with cholera. (rtr)

BUSINESS Saudi economy vulnerable as corruption probe hits business old guard

RIYADH - Two weeks ago the glitzy Ritz Carlton hotel in Riyadh was the site of an international conference promoting Saudi Arabia as an investment destination, with over 3,000 officials and business leaders attending. Now the hotel is temporarily serving as a luxury prison where some of the kingdom’s political and business elite are being held in a widening crackdown on corruption that may change the way the economy works. row. But the bottom fell out from under both companies last year, when a cash squeeze resulting from low oil prices caused the government to cancel or suspend projects and delay payments.

The firms faced multi-billion dollar debt restructurings; Binladin has

laid off tens of thousands of people while Oger’s bankers say it has essentially stopped operating. At the same time, state oil giant Saudi Aramco is moving to set up a construction company with local and international partners to build non-oil infrastructure in Saudi Arabia - potentially taking billions of dollars of business that would previously have gone to the family conglomerates.

Aramco and PIF, the sovereign fund, have also linked up with U.S. construction firm Jacobs Engineering to form a management company for strategic projects in the kingdom.

Many in the Saudi business world are celebrating the downfall of the old pa-

tronage system and the shift toward a “cleaner” business environment. “It’s great news for the clean ones among us - 99.99 percent are ecstatic,” said one senior executive.

But others express disquiet about the possible economic fallout of the purge. Some are concerned that banks could start calling in loans to families implicated in the probe, using loan clauses that permit this in cases of legal jeopardy; this could collapse companies’ share prices.

Many new business deals may be put on hold. A businessman at a foreign technology services firm told Reuters he had been considering a venture with a Saudi partner, but

decided against it this week because of the partner’s ties to the detained Bakr bin Laden.

The new anti-corruption commission has broad authority to seize assets at home and abroad. Some businessmen wonder if these powers could be used to pressure firms into participating in Prince Mohammed’s economic development projects. “It’s the old royal fiefdoms that are not in the Al Salman branch of the royal family that are now being purged,” said a Western analyst. “It’s a further centralising of political and economic power, and a seizing of the private assets that those fiefdoms have accumulated.” (rtr)

LONDON - Nearly half of Europeans who do not own their own home have given up hope of ever doing so, a survey showed on Tuesday, with pessimism highest among Britons and Germans.

Overall, the survey by Dutch bank ING found 48 percent of people in 13 European countries who do not yet own their own home reckoned they probably never will. And it mattered to most of them.

A majority of the non-homeowners - 65 percent - said they considered owning their own place to be a symbol of success, suggest-

ing that buying is not just a financial decision. Poles (72 percent), Turks (70 percent) and Romanians (70 percent) topped the list of those judging homeownership as a sign of success. Ian Bright, senior economist and managing director of group research at ING, said the survey findings suggested many people may become disenchanted with their lot.

“Most people want to buy a house. Yet many now accept that they are unlikely to buy,” he said.

“If you combine this with our findings that a higher proportion of

home owners are happy with their housing situation, compared with renters, then it seems that more people will feel incredibly frustrated with their housing choices in the future.” The survey made no reference to politics, but a number of European elections in the past years have shown a rising anger among voters at what is perceived as a growing gap between the haves and have-nots.

Hopes for being able to afford to buy a home, for example, were lowest in Britain and Germany, where about 56 percent of non-homeown-

ers in both countries believed they would never be able to buy. In what were seen as at the very least snubs to the status quo, Britons last year voted to leave the European Union, and Germans this year put a far-right party into the Bundestag for the first time in half a century.

House prices have long been out of reach for many in Britain and even with uncertainty over Brexit, data on Tuesday showed prices picking up speed in October. In Germany, though relatively cheap compared with other European countries in the past, house prices

have risen sharply in recent years, partly as record low European Central Bank rates have encouraged households to take on debt.

Average real estate prices in cities including Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and Frankfurt have increased by more than 60 percent since 2010, the Bundesbank estimates.

Non-homeowners in Turkey and Romania were the least pessimistic with only 29 percent and 31 percent, respectively, not expecting to be able to buy. Spain was next, but with a still hefty 43 percent saying they were probably priced out. (rtr)

Well, this is the atmosphere of plowing with foreign tourists at Baru village, Marga, Tabanan. In the green paddy field area, tourists can join in the plowing activities to experience the activities of farmers in Bali. By detaining dozens of officials and tycoons, a new anti-corruption body headed by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is seeking to dismantle systems of patronage and kick-backs that have distorted the economy for decades.

Delight your senses in Balinese traditional cakes. Local community has a variety of sticky and sweet jaja (cake). Various types of cake are made specifically to be part of ritual, offered to the ancestors, while some others are made deliberately for consumption. However, all the cakes are usually used for offering other than for snacks and on the way round.

One of the cakes serving as a part of ritual, but usually presented as the offering, is the ikuiku cake. This round and oval-shaped cake with a flat bottom like a turtle has a sweet taste and sticky. Sweet taste is prostrated not due to artificial sweetener, but it is from pure sugar. For

the base, it uses banana leaf to avoid chemicals.

Jaja iku-iku is often used as a snack by farmers served in their mutual assistance.

For example, it is served when transplanting paddy seedlings in mutual assistance in the fields. In such a mass activity, it is usually accompanied with the provision of small lunch party. Jaja iku-iku is served as dessert after having the main course. At that time, various cakes are usually accompanied with coffee or tea.

Allegedly the cake is the result of acculturation of Balinese-Chinese culinary tradition because every Chinese feast day,

Chinese-descendant people pass this cake to their neighbors. Jaja iku-iku has round and flat shape, like a turtle is made based on or in accordance with the mold. On the top it has a variety of shapes and images. There are floral, turtle and other motif. It corresponds to the image of the mold. Commonly, it has 2 – 3 different images.

The ingredient of this cake is glutinous rice flour. As alternative ingredient, people commonly use cassava or sweet potato. Other ingredients include white sugar, palm (brown) sugar, grated coconut, salt and others. The finely grounded flour is brewed with water

Megandu is a traditional game born from the agrarian activities in paddy fields. The traditional games involving elementary school students are usually played in paddy fields after harvest. “Megandu is said to be the only one game held at Ole, Marga village, Dauh Puri, Marga – Tabanan.

Unfortunately, the game becomes scarce because people rarely know it and even play it.

In an effort to preserve this cultural heritage, Megandu was once featured in the Bali Arts Festival (BAF) several years ago by Wintang Rare Art Studio directed by I Wayan Weda. In the BAF XXXVII it was also featured through creative dance entitled Megandu by Ni Luh Nyoman Sri Suryati and I Wayan Muder who makes the arrangement. In the Festival ke Uma 2017, the Megandu game is

also presented with the involvement of urban and rural children.

In the past, Megandu was commonly played by children of Ole hamlet in the fields after massive harvest, while herding cattle, mowing grass, looking for dragonflies and looking for eels. In the middle of the activity, they agreed to play Megandu. After harvesting, paddy fields were used as the location to play.

This game is commenced with the making of eagle’s egg-like ball.

Each child must deposit one ball.

After that, a child will be determined by making a draw. After getting the seeker, the seeker will then plunged a stick in the middle of the field. At top of the wood is tied a rope made from coconut bark and the seeker holds it.

The other children put straw balls in the middle of the wood. The seeker

then tightens the string around the wood and tried to wrap around the other children. The others are trying to pick up the ball and should not get caught. If a child has a strap, it is ready to be guided (throw with straw balls). The players do not hesitate to throw the child to tears. Furthermore, the child hit by the ball must then serves as a seeker and so forth.

Although it is a tradition for rural children, the megandu game is good for development of children starting from their physical to emotional development that can affect their growth. When modern games are combined with traditional games will provide complementary benefits for the development of children because they get benefits in terms of physical, psychological, and social aspects. EU to discuss tax havens blacklist after “Paradise Papers” leaks

BRUSSELS - European Union states will on Tuesday bring forward a discussion on plans for a tax havens’ blacklists after newly leaked documents revealed investments by wealthy individuals and institutions around the globe, officials said.

ONE-COUNTRY LIST?

An EU-wide blacklist is believed to carry more weight. Jurisdictions included in the list could be subject to sanctions if they did not cooperate.

“It’s time that we agree and publish a blacklist on tax havens,” EU tax commissioner Pierre Moscovici told reporters, calling for a “credible” list and “adequate sanctions” when serious breaches are unveiled.

There are no details yet of the type of sanctions that could be imposed, although being on the blacklist in itself could discourage individuals and companies from putting money in those jurisdictions.

Moscovici added that the EU blacklist should be more ambitious than the existing list of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), a global group of mostly rich nations that has so far been leading the fight against tax avoidance.

The OECD list of non-cooperative jurisdictions on tax transparency includes to date only Trinidad and Tobago.

Two EU officials told Reuters a “dialogue” was ongoing with some jurisdictions around the world to make sure they would abide by the criteria set by the EU on tax transparency. (rtr)

The subject’s inclusion on the monthly meeting’s agenda of EU finance ministers came after weekend media reports citing the “Paradise Papers”, a trove of financial documents leaked mostly from Appleby, a prominent offshore law firm.

The documents were obtained by Germany’s Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper and shared with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) and some media outlets. Reuters has not independently verified them. Appleby was not immediately available for comment.

The latest revelations “put renewed emphasis on the work the European Commission is doing to fight tax avoidance”, the vice president of the EU’s executive arm, Valdis Dombrovskis, told reporters on Monday.

EU countries had planned for months to reach an agreement on a blacklist for tax havens by the end of this year. The new revelations prompted the discussion to be brought forward, EU officials said, but no final decision was expected on Tuesday.

The EU has discussed several measures to crack down on tax avoidance, including following the “Panama Papers”, a release by the ICIJ last year which chronicled a shadowy world of offshore holdings and hidden wealth.

Measures proposed by the European Commission include an EU-wide list of tax havens meant to discourage the rerouting of profits made in the EU to tax-free or low-tax countries.

Family strife, threats preceded Texas church massacre by former U.S. airman SUTHERLAND SPRINGS - A former U.S. serviceman who shot 26 worshipers to death during Sunday prayers in Texas was embroiled in a domestic dispute with his in-laws and had sent threatening text messages to his wife’s mother before the massacre, officials said Monday.

The Pentagon separately disclosed that it had failed to furnish information about the gunman’s criminal record from his U.S. Air Force service to a national database that should have prevented him from legally purchasing the firearms he bought.

The killer, Devin Kelley, 26, was convicted by court-martial of assaulting his first wife and step-son while serving in an Air Force logistics readiness unit and spent a year in detention before his badconduct discharge in 2014, according to the Pentagon.

The Air Force acknowledged on Monday that Kelley’s 2012 conviction on two counts of domestic violence were never entered into the National Criminal Information Center (NCIC) system, a U.S. government data bank used by licensed gun dealers for conducting background checks on firearms purchasers.

Federal law forbids anyone from selling or giving a gun to someone convicted of a crime involving domestic violence.

A sporting goods retail chain has said Kelley passed background checks when he bought a gun in 2016 and a second firearm the following year.

Christopher Combs, special agent in charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s San Antonio division, said there was nothing in the NCIC or two related databases that would have barred Kelley from legally buying any of three weapons police recovered from their investigation of the slayings.

Details of a background of violent, disturbing behavior emerged a day after Sunday’s rampage in southeastern Texas, which ranks as the deadliest mass shooting by a lone gunman in the state and one of the five most lethal in modern U.S. history.

Kelley was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head after a failed attempt to make his getaway from the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, authorities said.

Stepping out of the church, Kelley was confronted and shot twice - in the leg and torso - by an armed area resident later identified as Stephen Willeford.

Still, Kelley managed to flee in a sport utility vehicle as Willeford waved down a passing motorist, Johnnie Langendorff, in a pickup truck. The two good Samaritans then chased after the suspect at high speeds, before the gunman’s vehicle crashed in a ditch, authorities said.

Freeman Martin, a spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety, hailed Willeford as “our Texas hero,” crediting him with preventing further carnage. Authorities said Kelley had called his father during the pursuit to say he had been shot and might not survive.

It appeared family problems may have been a factor in Sunday’s bloodshed. Kelley was involved in a domestic dispute with the family of Danielle Shields, a woman he married in 2014, and the situation had flared up, according to officials and public records. (rtr)

Indonesian court recognises native religions in landmark ruling

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s Constitutional Court on Tuesday affirmed the rights of devotees of faiths outside the country’s officially recognised religions, in a move activists welcomed as a “new chapter for religious freedom”. Against a backdrop of rising intolerance towards minorities in the world’s largest Muslimmajority nation, the court said Indonesians would not be required to identify as either Muslim, Catholic, Protestant, Hindu, Buddhist or Confucian on their national identification cards.

Naipospos from the Setara Institute, a group that advocates for religious harmony, said Indonesians who refused to embrace one of the regulated religions on their identity cards had limited access to education, restricted employment opportunities and were denied legal marriage. The Court recommended that a seventh, catch-all category be created - “Believers of the Faith” - for ID cards.

“This is a new chapter for religious freedom in Indonesia for both government and followers of indigenous religions,” Naipospos said.

“This is a door for the government to recognise their rights.” A spokesman for Indonesia’s president Joko Widodo could not immediately be reached for comment. Indonesia’s founding constitution says the state is based on the belief in the “One and Only God” but guarantees “each and every citizen the freedom of religion and worship”.

However, blasphemy laws passed in 1965 stipulated only six religions would be protected. Subsequent regulations and laws effectively enshrined those as the only religions recognised by the state.

“The ruling (on Tuesday) means the end of Indonesia recognising only six religions,” said Andreas Harsono of Human Rights Watch.

In the 2000 census, about 400,000 people identified as holding beliefs outside the six main religions, although Harsono said this probably underestimated the extent of believers in non-recognised faiths. Across Indonesia’s vast

chain of islands, more than 200 distinctive native faiths, such as the Sundanese people’s Wiwitan, the Dayak’s Kaharingan and the Torajan’s Aluk To Dolo survived even as Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam dominated during different eras.

Its people also blended elements of the major religions over time and infused them with animist and mystical beliefs. The court ruling should also apply to followers of non-indigenous religions such as Baha’i and Judaism that are not formally recognised in Indonesia, said Nia Sjarifudin of the Unity in Diversity Alliance.

In recent decades, Indonesia’s reputation for tolerance has been tarnished as its unique syncretic form of Islam has been challenged by more fundamentalist interpretations imported from the Middle East.

In the past year, an alliance of Islamist hardliners pushed successfully for the imprisonment of then Governor of Jakarta Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, an ethnic Chinese Christian, for insulting Islam under the 1965 blasphemy laws. Atheism is not legal in Indonesia, and nonbelievers have also been charged with blasphemy. (rtr)

Indonesia governor cracks down on bloody dog-boar fights

JAKARTA - Authorities in Indonesia’s West Java province have called a halt to contests pitting dogs against wild boars, following media coverage of the bloody spectacle and pressure by animal rights activists, the provincial governor’s spokesman said on Tuesday.

Last month, Reuters reported that cash prizes of up to $2,000 were being given to dogs victorious in the fights, which villagers call ‘adu bagong’, or boar fighting.

Owners of participating animals said they saw the fights as a way to preserve a regional tradition, be-

sides testing the agility and hunting abilities of the dogs.

“Not all traditions that we have are good,” said Ade Sukalsah, a spokesman for provincial governor Ahmad Heryawan. “If a tradition has a bad influence and impact on people’s lives, the tradition must be eliminated or forgotten.”

Heryawan’s decision to halt the fights was based on Indonesian criminal law provisions against the torture of animals, he added.

The shows “have a negative impact on the community by showing cruelty, torture and violence against

animals,” Sukalsah said.

They were also a forum for gambling, he said, adding that Heryawan had issed a circular to regional officials, urging police and the local community to help enforce the law.

Sukalsah said the decision was made in response to “some media reports from Reuters, the BBC and then some animal protection NGOs that sent letters to us.”

The practice, which began in the 1960s when wild pigs were hunted to protect crops, has angered animal rights groups who created an online petition demanding the halt. (rtr)

The town of Munduk The town of Munduk more or less follows along the main road that winds through the mountains.

Because it is so hilly, you can never really see much of the town beyond a few hundred meters at a time, as the road arches and curves out of sight, but on either side of the road, forests and fields stretch into the horizon.

It’s definitely a small town without much going on; in fact, most of the commercial businesses were home stays or small convenient shops called “toko’s” where snacks, drinks (including beer), kitchen supplies and toiletries can be purchased, along with a few handicrafts such a woven prayer boxes and other accouterments for family alters. The road is quite busy, and though we did walk up and down to check out the shops and find dinner, it felt a little dangerous at night due to the windy curves and lack of lighting.

The Munduk Waterfall Hike: The Waterfall Hike begins off the main road, pretty much in the center

of what constitutes the town. A school (“Sekolah”) sits to the right of the main road where you turn left down a narrow concrete alleyway.

From the alleyway, the path winds through a bit of village where tiny tokos sell incense and dried Munduk herbs: cocoa, coffee, vanilla, clove, etc.

From the village, you’ll soon hike through clove plantations where workers climb steep bamboo ladders to pluck clove buds from the eaves. The worker photographed below informed me it takes three hours to pick one kilogram (2.2 pounds) of cloves, which sells for a mere 100,000 Rupiah!

From there, the path winds through more clove trees as well as coffee, cocoa and banana trees … and a few pineapple plants popping up here and there. The closer you get to the steps leading down to the waterfall, the more dense the forest becomes. There are several footpaths snaking off here and there; many of which lead to the Melanting waterfall and are used by the locals as the concrete steps impose a 10,000 Rupiah toll. (IBP/net)

“I can’t believe it,” the 41-yearold said, celebrating with his wife and three daughters.

“It’s a dream to just ride in the race, but to win it again, I’m just lost for words.

“I just felt a little bit left out, I’d lost my spot, just chipping away trying to get back to where I was. I’m just starting to feel the love now.”

The Gai Waterhouse-trained Cismontane made the early running but it was the two O’Brientrained horses that muscled their way to the front as they turned into the straight.

LONDON - British teenager Lando Norris will replace retired world champion Jenson Button as McLaren’s test and reserve driver next season, the Formula One team announced on Monday.

The 17-year-old has been part of McLaren’s Young Driver programme since the start of the year and is expected to compete in Formula Two in 2018 after winning the European Formula Three championship this year.

“Lando is an outstanding young talent. Today’s announcement is thoroughly deserved, and underlines the incredible high regard in which we hold his abilities,” said McLaren executive director Zak Brown in a statement.

“His summer test for McLaren was also remarkably impressive, and was further proof that he is ready to step up and take on a role of this size, scope and responsibility.

“At McLaren, we are all extremely keen to help him achieve his goal of racing in Formula One.” Norris, who will be 18 next week, will attend grands prix and have an active role in testing and the simulator, starting with a tyre test at Interlagos after next weekend’s Brazilian Grand Prix.

David Moyes begins his new job as West Ham United manager intent on reviving his floundering career by resuscitating a club mired in relegation trouble. Many observers view the 54-year-old former Everton manager as fortunate to get another chance to prove himself after being sacked from his past three jobs at Manchester United, Real Sociedad and Sunderland, who were relegated from the Premier League last season after losing 26 of his 38 games in charge.

It was his demeanour and his record that was held against him and Moyes appeared to get his excuses in early by predicting Sunderland faced a difficult season after their second game. But the Black Cats’ current plight -- they are bottom of the second-tier Championship -- suggests their problems are more structural and West Ham’s owners have looked beyond that unhappy spell in charge to appoint a highly experienced coach who knows he may not get another chance if West Ham fail to stay up.

British newspapers reported that Moyes’ case has been pushed by West Ham’s director of player recruitment, Tony Henry, who worked with the Scot at Everton where he forged his reputation as a manager capable enough in his 11 years in charge to attract Manchester United when Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

A banner declaring Moyes “The Chosen One” did him no favours during an insipid season in charge at Old Trafford and his subsequent spell at Real Sociedad also ended in disappointment, with the Spanish Liga club flirting with relegation. Now he faces a similar fight at West Ham, with little in Saturday’s 4-1 home defeat by Liverpool - Slaven Bilic’s final game in charge - to offer immediate hope of a revival.

Sunday dropped West Ham into 18th place, with nine points from 11 games. But the malaise goes deeper than results, with the Hammers appearing an unhappy club struggling with the legacy of leaving Upton Park for the London Stadium at the start of last season, a move that many supporters blame for their present troubles.

While Bilic lost one of his 17 games in charge at the old ground, West Ham have been beaten 11 times in 24 matches in their new home.

West Ham striker Andy Carroll criticised fans for leaving early on Saturday and Moyes will face a major job galvanising the club’s traditionally raucous support if they are to avoid their first releagation since 2011.

Like Crystal Palace, who earlier this term turned to another seasoned manager in 70-year-old Roy Hodgson, the Hammers believe Moyes has the Premier League nous to turn their fortunes around.

The Scot, who has also been touted as a possible manager of his national team, signalled his intention to return to the Premier League at the weekend when he first became linked with the West Ham post.

“For me to get back in it means another manager is going to have to lose their job and I wouldn’t wish that on anybody,” he said on beIN Sports. “He (Bilic) must be hating it and wanting to get a result as soon as he can. So if it becomes available, yes, but at the moment it’s not available.” Asked if he might be managing again after the forthcoming international break, he added: “I really don’t know. I hope so.”

Now he has his chance with a team who have underperformed, with many observers questioning the wisdom of their close season transfer dealings as they paid top prices for ageing players, the 24 million pounds ($31.48 million) paid to Stoke City for 28-yearold Marko Arnautovic being a prime example.

No more transfer dealings can be done until the window opens in January so Moyes must work with what he has until then. Both manager and team need to learn how to win again, which makes his appointment an intriguing leap of faith by the owners. (rtr)

Manchester United’s injured players can utilise the international break to regain full fitness while key squad members can get much-needed rest, manager Jose Mourinho has said.

United midfielders Michael Carrick (calf) and Paul Pogba (hamstring) have been injured since September while long-term absentees Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcos Rojo, who sustained knee injuries last season, are yet to recover.

Mourinho’s team head into the international break following a 1-0 league defeat at champions Chelsea which left them second in the standings, eight points behind leaders and local rivals Manchester City.

“We have the group of players which are the ones that we hope will recover as soon as possible,” Mourinho told the club’s website. (www.manutd.com) “They have to work every day but they are in a good position now.

Pogba, Ibrahimovic, Rojo, Fellaini. They are in good positions so I think we can go into this part of the season, the Christmas period, and after, in a strong position.”

United have won all four of their Champions League games and are on the verge of qualifying for the knockout stages while also competing to retain the League Cup title.

With nine matches to be played across all competitions in December, Mourinho is hopeful that his key players, who were not selected for their national teams for this month’s friendlies, get a well-earned break.

“They (international players) all disappear and then we have a couple... like (Chris) Smalling and (Ander) Herrera and they really deserve, after so many matches, to have a week off which I’m going to give them,” Mourinho said. ZAGREB - Having billed Greece as the most awkward opponents they could draw in the World Cup playoffs, Croatia will head into the two-leg tie confident of maintaining their flawless record in the final round of qualifying for major tournaments.

Many observers view the 54-year-old former Everton manager as fortunate to get another chance to prove himself after being sacked from his past three jobs at Manchester United, Real Sociedad and Sunderland, who were relegated from the Premier League last season after losing 26 of his 38 games in charge.

It was his demeanour and his record that was held against him and Moyes appeared to get his excuses in early by predicting Sunderland faced a difficult season after their second game. But the Black Cats’ current plight -- they are bottom of the second-tier Championship -- suggests their problems are more structural and West Ham’s owners have looked beyond that unhappy spell in charge to appoint a highly experienced coach who knows he may not get another chance if West Ham fail to stay up.

British newspapers reported that Moyes’ case has been pushed by West Ham’s director of player recruitment, Tony Henry, who worked with the Scot at Everton where he forged his reputation as a manager capable enough in his 11 years in charge to attract Manchester United when Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

A banner declaring Moyes “The Chosen One” did him no favours during an insipid season in charge at Old Trafford and his subsequent spell at Real Sociedad also ended in disappointment, with the Spanish Liga club flirting with relegation. Now he faces a similar fight at West Ham, with little in Saturday’s 4-1 home defeat by Liverpool - Slaven Bilic’s final game in charge - to offer immediate hope of a revival.

But the malaise goes deeper than results, with the Hammers appearing an unhappy club struggling with the legacy of leaving Upton Park for the London Stadium at the start of last season, a move that many supporters blame for their present troubles.

While Bilic lost one of his 17 games in charge at the old ground, West Ham have been beaten 11 times in 24 matches in their new home.

So if it becomes available, yes, but at the moment it’s not available.” Asked if he might be managing again after the forthcoming international break, he added: “I really don’t know. I hope so.”

Now he has his chance with a team who have underperformed, with many observers questioning the wisdom of their close season transfer dealings as they paid top prices for ageing players, the 24 million pounds ($31.48 million) paid to Stoke City for 28-yearold Marko Arnautovic being a prime example.

No more transfer dealings can be done until the window opens in January so Moyes must work with what he has until then. Both manager and team need to learn how to win again, which makes his appointment an intriguing leap of faith by the owners. (rtr)

Manchester United’s injured players can utilise the international break to regain full fitness while key squad members can get much-needed rest, manager Jose Mourinho has said.

United midfielders Michael Carrick (calf) and Paul Pogba (hamstring) have been injured since September while long-term absentees Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcos Rojo, who sustained knee injuries last season, are yet to recover.

Mourinho’s team head into the international break following a 1-0 league defeat at champions Chelsea which left them second in the standings, eight points behind leaders and local rivals Manchester City.

“We have the group of players which are the ones that we hope will recover as soon as possible,” Mourinho told the club’s website. (www.manutd.com) “They have to work every day but they are in a good position now.

With nine matches to be played across all competitions in December, Mourinho is hopeful that his key players, who were not selected for their national teams for this month’s friendlies, get a well-earned break.

“They (international players) all disappear and then we have a couple... like (Chris) Smalling and (Ander) Herrera and they really deserve, after so many matches, to have a week off which I’m going to give them,” Mourinho said. The town of Munduk The town of Munduk more or less follows along the main road that winds through the mountains.

Because it is so hilly, you can never really see much of the town beyond a few hundred meters at a time, as the road arches and curves out of sight, but on either side of the road, forests and fields stretch into the horizon.

It’s definitely a small town without much going on; in fact, most of the commercial businesses were home stays or small convenient shops called “toko’s” where snacks, drinks (including beer), kitchen supplies and toiletries can be purchased, along with a few handicrafts such a woven prayer boxes and other accouterments for family alters. The road is quite busy, and though we did walk up and down to check out the shops and find dinner, it felt a little dangerous at night due to the windy curves and lack of lighting.

The Munduk Waterfall Hike: The Waterfall Hike begins off the main road, pretty much in the center

of what constitutes the town. A school (“Sekolah”) sits to the right of the main road where you turn left down a narrow concrete alleyway.

From the alleyway, the path winds through a bit of village where tiny tokos sell incense and dried Munduk herbs: cocoa, coffee, vanilla, clove, etc.

From the village, you’ll soon hike through clove plantations where workers climb steep bamboo ladders to pluck clove buds from the eaves. The worker photographed below informed me it takes three hours to pick one kilogram (2.2 pounds) of cloves, which sells for a mere 100,000 Rupiah!

From there, the path winds through more clove trees as well as coffee, cocoa and banana trees … and a few pineapple plants popping up here and there. The closer you get to the steps leading down to the waterfall, the more dense the forest becomes. There are several footpaths snaking off here and there; many of which lead to the Melanting waterfall and are used by the locals as the concrete steps impose a 10,000 Rupiah toll. (IBP/net)

“I just felt a little bit left out, I’d lost my spot, just chipping away trying to get back to where I was. I’m just starting to feel the love now.”

LONDON - British teenager Lando Norris will replace retired world champion Jenson Button as McLaren’s test and reserve driver next season, the Formula One team announced on Monday.

The 17-year-old has been part of McLaren’s Young Driver programme since the start of the year and is expected to compete in Formula Two in 2018 after winning the European Formula Three championship this year.

“Lando is an outstanding young talent. Today’s announcement is thoroughly deserved, and underlines the incredible high regard in which we hold his abilities,” said McLaren executive director Zak Brown in a statement.

“His summer test for McLaren was also remarkably impressive, and was further proof that he is ready to step up and take on a role of this size, scope and responsibility.

“At McLaren, we are all extremely keen to help him achieve his goal of racing in Formula One.” Norris, who will be 18 next week, will attend grands prix and have an active role in testing and the simulator, starting with a tyre test at Interlagos after next weekend’s Brazilian Grand Prix.

EU to discuss tax havens blacklist after “Paradise Papers” leaks

BRUSSELS - European Union states will on Tuesday bring forward a discussion on plans for a tax havens’ blacklists after newly leaked documents revealed investments by wealthy individuals and institutions around the globe, officials said.

ONE-COUNTRY LIST?

An EU-wide blacklist is believed to carry more weight. Jurisdictions included in the list could be subject to sanctions if they did not cooperate.

“It’s time that we agree and publish a blacklist on tax havens,” EU tax commissioner Pierre Moscovici told reporters, calling for a “credible” list and “adequate sanctions” when serious breaches are unveiled.

There are no details yet of the type of sanctions that could be imposed, although being on the blacklist in itself could discourage individuals and companies from putting money in those jurisdictions.

Moscovici added that the EU blacklist should be more ambitious than the existing list of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), a global group of mostly rich nations that has so far been leading the fight against tax avoidance.

The OECD list of non-cooperative jurisdictions on tax transparency includes to date only Trinidad and Tobago.

Two EU officials told Reuters a “dialogue” was ongoing with some jurisdictions around the world to make sure they would abide by the criteria set by the EU on tax transparency. (rtr)

The subject’s inclusion on the monthly meeting’s agenda of EU finance ministers came after weekend media reports citing the “Paradise Papers”, a trove of financial documents leaked mostly from Appleby, a prominent offshore law firm.

The documents were obtained by Germany’s Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper and shared with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) and some media outlets. Reuters has not independently verified them. Appleby was not immediately available for comment.

The latest revelations “put renewed emphasis on the work the European Commission is doing to fight tax avoidance”, the vice president of the EU’s executive arm, Valdis Dombrovskis, told reporters on Monday.

EU countries had planned for months to reach an agreement on a blacklist for tax havens by the end of this year. The new revelations prompted the discussion to be brought forward, EU officials said, but no final decision was expected on Tuesday.

The EU has discussed several measures to crack down on tax avoidance, including following the “Panama Papers”, a release by the ICIJ last year which chronicled a shadowy world of offshore holdings and hidden wealth.

Measures proposed by the European Commission include an EU-wide list of tax havens meant to discourage the rerouting of profits made in the EU to tax-free or low-tax countries.

Family strife, threats preceded Texas church massacre by former U.S. airman SUTHERLAND SPRINGS - A former U.S. serviceman who shot 26 worshipers to death during Sunday prayers in Texas was embroiled in a domestic dispute with his in-laws and had sent threatening text messages to his wife’s mother before the massacre, officials said Monday.

The Pentagon separately disclosed that it had failed to furnish information about the gunman’s criminal record from his U.S. Air Force service to a national database that should have prevented him from legally purchasing the firearms he bought.

The killer, Devin Kelley, 26, was convicted by court-martial of assaulting his first wife and step-son while serving in an Air Force logistics readiness unit and spent a year in detention before his badconduct discharge in 2014, according to the Pentagon.

The Air Force acknowledged on Monday that Kelley’s 2012 conviction on two counts of domestic violence were never entered into the National Criminal Information Center (NCIC) system, a U.S. government data bank used by licensed gun dealers for conducting background checks on firearms purchasers.

Federal law forbids anyone from selling or giving a gun to someone convicted of a crime involving domestic violence.

A sporting goods retail chain has said Kelley passed background checks when he bought a gun in 2016 and a second firearm the following year.

Christopher Combs, special agent in charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s San Antonio division, said there was nothing in the NCIC or two related databases that would have barred Kelley from legally buying any of three weapons police recovered from their investigation of the slayings.

Details of a background of violent, disturbing behavior emerged a day after Sunday’s rampage in southeastern Texas, which ranks as the deadliest mass shooting by a lone gunman in the state and one of the five most lethal in modern U.S. history.

Kelley was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head after a failed attempt to make his getaway from the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, authorities said.

Stepping out of the church, Kelley was confronted and shot twice - in the leg and torso - by an armed area resident later identified as Stephen Willeford.

Still, Kelley managed to flee in a sport utility vehicle as Willeford waved down a passing motorist, Johnnie Langendorff, in a pickup truck. The two good Samaritans then chased after the suspect at high speeds, before the gunman’s vehicle crashed in a ditch, authorities said.

Freeman Martin, a spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety, hailed Willeford as “our Texas hero,” crediting him with preventing further carnage. Authorities said Kelley had called his father during the pursuit to say he had been shot and might not survive.

Indonesian court recognises native religions in landmark ruling

JAKARTA - Indonesia’s Constitutional Court on Tuesday affirmed the rights of devotees of faiths outside the country’s officially recognised religions, in a move activists welcomed as a “new chapter for religious freedom”. Against a backdrop of rising intolerance towards minorities in the world’s largest Muslimmajority nation, the court said Indonesians would not be required to identify as either Muslim, Catholic, Protestant, Hindu, Buddhist or Confucian on their national identification cards.

Naipospos from the Setara Institute, a group that advocates for religious harmony, said Indonesians who refused to embrace one of the regulated religions on their identity cards had limited access to education, restricted employment opportunities and were denied legal marriage. The Court recommended that a seventh, catch-all category be created - “Believers of the Faith” - for ID cards.

“This is a new chapter for religious freedom in Indonesia for both government and followers of indigenous religions,” Naipospos said.

“This is a door for the government to recognise their rights.” A spokesman for Indonesia’s president Joko Widodo could not immediately be reached for comment. Indonesia’s founding constitution says the state is based on the belief in the “One and Only God” but guarantees “each and every citizen the freedom of religion and worship”.

However, blasphemy laws passed in 1965 stipulated only six religions would be protected. Subsequent regulations and laws effectively enshrined those as the only religions recognised by the state.

“The ruling (on Tuesday) means the end of Indonesia recognising only six religions,” said Andreas Harsono of Human Rights Watch.

In the 2000 census, about 400,000 people identified as holding beliefs outside the six main religions, although Harsono said this probably underestimated the extent of believers in non-recognised faiths. Across Indonesia’s vast

chain of islands, more than 200 distinctive native faiths, such as the Sundanese people’s Wiwitan, the Dayak’s Kaharingan and the Torajan’s Aluk To Dolo survived even as Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam dominated during different eras.

Its people also blended elements of the major religions over time and infused them with animist and mystical beliefs. The court ruling should also apply to followers of non-indigenous religions such as Baha’i and Judaism that are not formally recognised in Indonesia, said Nia Sjarifudin of the Unity in Diversity Alliance.

In recent decades, Indonesia’s reputation for tolerance has been tarnished as its unique syncretic form of Islam has been challenged by more fundamentalist interpretations imported from the Middle East.

In the past year, an alliance of Islamist hardliners pushed successfully for the imprisonment of then Governor of Jakarta Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, an ethnic Chinese Christian, for insulting Islam under the 1965 blasphemy laws. Indonesia governor cracks down on bloody dog-boar fights

JAKARTA - Authorities in Indonesia’s West Java province have called a halt to contests pitting dogs against wild boars, following media coverage of the bloody spectacle and pressure by animal rights activists, the provincial governor’s spokesman said on Tuesday.

Last month, Reuters reported that cash prizes of up to $2,000 were being given to dogs victorious in the fights, which villagers call ‘adu bagong’, or boar fighting.

Owners of participating animals said they saw the fights as a way to preserve a regional tradition, be-

sides testing the agility and hunting abilities of the dogs.

“Not all traditions that we have are good,” said Ade Sukalsah, a spokesman for provincial governor Ahmad Heryawan. “If a tradition has a bad influence and impact on people’s lives, the tradition must be eliminated or forgotten.”

Heryawan’s decision to halt the fights was based on Indonesian criminal law provisions against the torture of animals, he added.

The shows “have a negative impact on the community by showing cruelty, torture and violence against

animals,” Sukalsah said.

They were also a forum for gambling, he said, adding that Heryawan had issed a circular to regional officials, urging police and the local community to help enforce the law.

Sukalsah said the decision was made in response to “some media reports from Reuters, the BBC and then some animal protection NGOs that sent letters to us.”

The practice, which began in the 1960s when wild pigs were hunted to protect crops, has angered animal rights groups who created an online petition demanding the halt. (rtr)

BUSINESS Saudi economy vulnerable as corruption probe hits business old guard

RIYADH - Two weeks ago the glitzy Ritz Carlton hotel in Riyadh was the site of an international conference promoting Saudi Arabia as an investment destination, with over 3,000 officials and business leaders attending. Now the hotel is temporarily serving as a luxury prison where some of the kingdom’s political and business elite are being held in a widening crackdown on corruption that may change the way the economy works. row. There’s just uncertainty.” Some private businessmen in Saudi Arabia are now trying to move their money out of the country “while they still can”, the analyst said.

For many foreigners, the most shocking aspect of the purge has been the detention of billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, the flamboyant, internationally known chairman of investment firm Kingdom Holding.

STATE CONTRACTS The saga of the Binladin group underlines how the business environment is changing. Binladin and another big construction group, Saudi Oger, long enjoyed preferential access to the kingdom’s biggest projects and control over pricing as a result of their close relationships with royal patrons. But the bottom fell out from under both companies last year, when a cash squeeze resulting from low oil prices caused the government to cancel or suspend projects and delay payments.

The firms faced multi-billion dollar debt restructurings; Binladin has

laid off tens of thousands of people while Oger’s bankers say it has essentially stopped operating. At the same time, state oil giant Saudi Aramco is moving to set up a construction company with local and international partners to build non-oil infrastructure in Saudi Arabia - potentially taking billions of dollars of business that would previously have gone to the family conglomerates.

Aramco and PIF, the sovereign fund, have also linked up with U.S. construction firm Jacobs Engineering to form a management company for strategic projects in the kingdom.

Many in the Saudi business world are celebrating the downfall of the old pa-

tronage system and the shift toward a “cleaner” business environment. “It’s great news for the clean ones among us - 99.99 percent are ecstatic,” said one senior executive.

But others express disquiet about the possible economic fallout of the purge. Some are concerned that banks could start calling in loans to families implicated in the probe, using loan clauses that permit this in cases of legal jeopardy; this could collapse companies’ share prices.

Many new business deals may be put on hold. A businessman at a foreign technology services firm told Reuters he had been considering a venture with a Saudi partner, but

decided against it this week because of the partner’s ties to the detained Bakr bin Laden.

The new anti-corruption commission has broad authority to seize assets at home and abroad. Some businessmen wonder if these powers could be used to pressure firms into participating in Prince Mohammed’s economic development projects. “It’s the old royal fiefdoms that are not in the Al Salman branch of the royal family that are now being purged,” said a Western analyst. “It’s a further centralising of political and economic power, and a seizing of the private assets that those fiefdoms have accumulated.” (rtr)

LONDON - Nearly half of Europeans who do not own their own home have given up hope of ever doing so, a survey showed on Tuesday, with pessimism highest among Britons and Germans.

Overall, the survey by Dutch bank ING found 48 percent of people in 13 European countries who do not yet own their own home reckoned they probably never will. And it mattered to most of them.

A majority of the non-homeowners - 65 percent - said they considered owning their own place to be a symbol of success, suggest-

ing that buying is not just a financial decision. Poles (72 percent), Turks (70 percent) and Romanians (70 percent) topped the list of those judging homeownership as a sign of success. Ian Bright, senior economist and managing director of group research at ING, said the survey findings suggested many people may become disenchanted with their lot.

“Most people want to buy a house. Yet many now accept that they are unlikely to buy,” he said.

“If you combine this with our findings that a higher proportion of

home owners are happy with their housing situation, compared with renters, then it seems that more people will feel incredibly frustrated with their housing choices in the future.” The survey made no reference to politics, but a number of European elections in the past years have shown a rising anger among voters at what is perceived as a growing gap between the haves and have-nots.

Hopes for being able to afford to buy a home, for example, were lowest in Britain and Germany, where about 56 percent of non-homeown-

ers in both countries believed they would never be able to buy. In what were seen as at the very least snubs to the status quo, Britons last year voted to leave the European Union, and Germans this year put a far-right party into the Bundestag for the first time in half a century.

House prices have long been out of reach for many in Britain and even with uncertainty over Brexit, data on Tuesday showed prices picking up speed in October. In Germany, though relatively cheap compared with other European countries in the past, house prices

have risen sharply in recent years, partly as record low European Central Bank rates have encouraged households to take on debt.

Average real estate prices in cities including Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and Frankfurt have increased by more than 60 percent since 2010, the Bundesbank estimates.

Non-homeowners in Turkey and Romania were the least pessimistic with only 29 percent and 31 percent, respectively, not expecting to be able to buy. Spain was next, but with a still hefty 43 percent saying they were probably priced out. (rtr)

By detaining dozens of officials and tycoons, a new anti-corruption body headed by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is seeking to dismantle systems of patronage and kick-backs that have distorted the economy for decades.

Delight your senses in Balinese traditional cakes. Local community has a variety of sticky and sweet jaja (cake). Various types of cake are made specifically to be part of ritual, offered to the ancestors, while some others are made deliberately for consumption. However, all the cakes are usually used for offering other than for snacks and on the way round.

One of the cakes serving as a part of ritual, but usually presented as the offering, is the ikuiku cake. This round and oval-shaped cake with a flat bottom like a turtle has a sweet taste and sticky. Sweet taste is prostrated not due to artificial sweetener, but it is from pure sugar. For

the base, it uses banana leaf to avoid chemicals.

Jaja iku-iku is often used as a snack by farmers served in their mutual assistance.

For example, it is served when transplanting paddy seedlings in mutual assistance in the fields. In such a mass activity, it is usually accompanied with the provision of small lunch party. Jaja iku-iku is served as dessert after having the main course. At that time, various cakes are usually accompanied with coffee or tea.

Allegedly the cake is the result of acculturation of Balinese-Chinese culinary tradition because every Chinese feast day,

Chinese-descendant people pass this cake to their neighbors. Jaja iku-iku has round and flat shape, like a turtle is made based on or in accordance with the mold. On the top it has a variety of shapes and images. There are floral, turtle and other motif. It corresponds to the image of the mold. Commonly, it has 2 – 3 different images.

The ingredient of this cake is glutinous rice flour. As alternative ingredient, people commonly use cassava or sweet potato. Other ingredients include white sugar, palm (brown) sugar, grated coconut, salt and others. The finely grounded flour is brewed with water

Megandu is a traditional game born from the agrarian activities in paddy fields. The traditional games involving elementary school students are usually played in paddy fields after harvest. “Megandu is said to be the only one game held at Ole, Marga village, Dauh Puri, Marga – Tabanan.

Unfortunately, the game becomes scarce because people rarely know it and even play it.

In an effort to preserve this cultural heritage, Megandu was once featured in the Bali Arts Festival (BAF) several years ago by Wintang Rare Art Studio directed by I Wayan Weda. In the BAF XXXVII it was also featured through creative dance entitled Megandu by Ni Luh Nyoman Sri Suryati and I Wayan Muder who makes the arrangement. In the Festival ke Uma 2017, the Megandu game is

also presented with the involvement of urban and rural children.

In the past, Megandu was commonly played by children of Ole hamlet in the fields after massive harvest, while herding cattle, mowing grass, looking for dragonflies and looking for eels. In the middle of the activity, they agreed to play Megandu. After harvesting, paddy fields were used as the location to play.

This game is commenced with the making of eagle’s egg-like ball.

Each child must deposit one ball.

After that, a child will be determined by making a draw. After getting the seeker, the seeker will then plunged a stick in the middle of the field. At top of the wood is tied a rope made from coconut bark and the seeker holds it.

The other children put straw balls in the middle of the wood. The seeker

then tightens the string around the wood and tried to wrap around the other children. The others are trying to pick up the ball and should not get caught. If a child has a strap, it is ready to be guided (throw with straw balls). The players do not hesitate to throw the child to tears. Furthermore, the child hit by the ball must then serves as a seeker and so forth.

Although it is a tradition for rural children, the megandu game is good for development of children starting from their physical to emotional development that can affect their growth. When modern games are combined with traditional games will provide complementary benefits for the development of children because they get benefits in terms of physical, psychological, and social aspects. Until September 2017, dengue cases decrease

DENPASAR — Until September, dengue fever cases show a decrease compared to the same month in the previous year. There were 885 cases until last September 2017 while until September 2016 amounted to 2,130 cases. The decrease is caused by various anticipatory measures having been done starting from the eradication of mosquito nests (PSN), the spread of larvicide powder up to the formation of independent larva monitoring officers.

This was conveyed by Head of the Denpasar Health Agency, Luh Putu Sri Armini, accompanied by Division Head of Disease Prevention and Control, I.B. Gede Eka Putra, when met in her office, on Monday (Nov. 6).

According to Sri Armini, although there is a decrease in the case, the Denpasar municipality continues to implement mass fogging considering that November and December are rainy season and will result in many puddles such as containers, gutters, plastic containers or tin cans, fruit skins, stone pits, etc. Certainly they have a very potential place for Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes to nest and proliferate causing the increased transmission of dengue disease that often generates extraordinary events.

To alert and anticipate the dengue attack, people need to maintain environmental sanitation inside and outside their home. One of the most effective and efficient activities for that purpose is the eradication of mosquito nests. “We always disseminate to the public to continuously maintain hygiene, especially by implementing eradication of mosquito nests plus,” said Sri Armini.

She predicted the case to rise sharply along with the coming of rainy season and the peak of the case is predicted to occur during the period of April-May. To that end, the Denpasar municipality through the Health Agency together with the community conducts the eradication of mosquito nests movement before the season of transmission by the eradication above and mass larvacidation in water containers being difficult to be cleaned since early September. To do the activity, her agency involved 474 larva monitoring officers and coordinator and 44,242 independent monitoring officers having been formed through Gema Petik (independent larva monitoring officer) program and other community members.

Considering Denpasar belongs to a dengue endemic area where the case always occurs every year and tends to result in an outbreak, it is determined to further maximize the efforts to prevent and control the dengue. It is realized undertaking mass spraying and mass fogging from November 4 to December 11 this year. (kmb12)

Local Tabana fisherman I Nyoman Suarjana, explained that before going back out to sea he has to clean out the plastic trash that gets caught up in his nets.

There is not much he can do during the rainy season as his nets are not filled with fish or lobster but instead are filled with garbage.

“Marine debris is carried to the beach by rainwater, so my nets get filled with garbage”, said this man from Yeh Gangga hamlet, Sudimara village.

Besides, the waves at sea have

not been friendly for the last week, so he has not gone out to sea. “Today, because the weather is good, we planned to go out to sea, but I have no choice but to clean the garbage out of my nets first”, he explained.

Actually, he and other fishermen often do beach clean-ups but the garage keeps coming as rainwater carries it from inland.

Although some parts his net have been damaged by the garbage, he still uses it as a new net is quite expensive at IDR 230,000 per set.

He has to use nets to catch lobster as he can no longer use bamboo traps as small lobster also get caught. “ We catch one big lobster for every ten small ones. We release the small ones because only lobster weighing more than 200 grams can be exported”, said Suarjana.

Lobster traps also cost more to operate and are not worth it for the amount of money made from the catches. It is therefor no wonder that fishermen at Yeh Gangga almost all use nets instead of traps today. (kmb28)

The men in the remote Manus Island facility have defied attempts

by Australia and Papua New Guinea to close the camp, refusing to move to three transit centres despite having little food or drinking water.

Dozens of them also need medical help, three asylum seekers said, in a stand-off that the United Nations has described as a “looming humanitarian crisis”.

The men have repeatedly said they would not move to the transit camps because they feared PNG residents on the island may attack, or that the will be resettled elsewhere in PNG or

another developing nation.

The court rejected the challenge on behalf of one of the detainees because it said power, water and food were available at the three transit centres, Ben Lomai, a lawyer for the detainee who lodged the application, told Reuters.

Kate Schuetze, Pacific researcher for rights group Amnesty International, warned conditions could deteriorate “catastrophically”.

“The lives of these men, who are only asking for their rights to dignity and safety, are at serious risk,” Schuetze said in a statement.

The men, who include asylum seekers from Afghanistan, Iran, Myanmar, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Syria, were last given food on Oct. 29 and have been relying on sporadic aid from Manus island locals and rainwater.

Several of the detainees told Reuters Papua New Guinea’s navy had blocked access for islanders trying to deliver supplies in the past few days. Representatives for Papua New Guinea Immigration Minister Petrus Thomas did not respond immediately to a request for comment about the claim.

Behrouz Boochani, a Kurdish journalist from Iran who has been

detained on Manus island for more than four years, said 90 of the men were sick and required “urgent” medical treatment.

“They have infection, stomach ache and diarrhoea because of dirty water,” Boochani told Reuters.

Despite the conditions, several of the men said they would continue to defy efforts to get them to leave, frustrating Australia’s attempts to close one of two controversial detention centres it uses to detain asylum seekers who arrive by boat.

The Manus island camp, and another on the tiny Pacific island nation of Nauru, have been the cornerstones of Australia’s controversial immigration policies, which has been strongly criticised by the United Nations and

rights groups.

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said before the court ruling on Tuesday the men were only refusing to move to the new transit centres on the encouragement of advocates.

“There are alternative facilities available of a very high quality with food and all of the facilities,” Turnbull told Australian Broadcasting Corporation radio.

The relocation of the men is designed to give the United States time to complete vetting of candidates as part of a refugee swap deal that Australia hopes will see it no longer responsible for the detention of nearly 1,400 asylum seekers who have been classified as refugees. (rtr)

DUBAI - Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said on Tuesday that Iran’s supply of rockets to militias in Yemen is an act of “direct military aggression”, Saudi state news agency SPA reported.

The supply of rockets to the Iranallied rebel Houthi movement could “constitute an act of war against the Kingdom,” SPA quoted the crown prince as saying in a telephone call with the British Foreign Minister Boris Johnson.

Saudi air defence forces intercepted a ballistic missile they said was fired towards Riyadh on Saturday by the Houthi militia which controls large parts of neighbouring Yemen, including the capital Sanaa, in the

country’s civil war.

Iran has denied it was behind the missile launch, rejecting the Saudi and U.S. statements condemning Tehran as “destructive and provocative” and “slanders”.

In an interview with CNN television on Monday, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir accused the armed Lebanese Hezbollah group of firing the missile at Riyadh from Houthi-held territory.

“With regards to the missile ... that was launched on Saudi territory, it was an Iranian missile launched by Hezbollah from territory occupied by the Houthis in Yemen.”

He said the missile was similar to one launched in July at Yanbu

in Saudi Arabia and was manufactured in Iran, disassembled and smuggled into Yemen, then reassembled by the operatives of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards and Hezbollah, “then it was launched into Saudi Arabia.”

In reaction to the missile, the Saudi-led military coalition fighting against the Houthi movement in Yemen said on Monday it would close all air, land and sea ports to the Arabian Peninsula country.

The move is likely to deepen a humanitarian crisis in Yemen that according to the United Nations has pushed some seven million people to the brink of famine and left nearly 900,000 infected with cholera. (rtr)

Stephen Hawking says technology could end poverty but urges caution LISBON - Technology can hopefully reverse some of the harm caused to the planet by industrialisation and help end disease and poverty, but artificial intelligence (AI) needs to be controlled, physicist Stephen Hawking said on Monday.

Hawking, a British cosmologist who was diagnosed with motor neuron disease aged 21, said technology could transform every aspect of life but cautioned that artificial intelligence poses new challenges.

He said artificial intelligence and robots are already threatening millions of jobs - but this new revolution could be used to help society and for the good of the world such as alleviating poverty and disease.

“The rise of AI could be the worst or the best thing that has happened for humanity,” Hawking said via telepresence at opening night of the 2017 Web Summit in Lisbon that is attended by about 60,000 people.

“We simply need to be aware of the dangers, identify them, employ the best possible practice and management and prepare for its consequences well in advance.”

Hawking’ s comments come during an escalating

debate about the pro and cons of artificial intelligence, a term used to describe machines with a computer code that learns as it goes.

Silicon Valley entrepreneur Elon Musk, who is chief executive of electric car maker Tesla Inc and rocket company SpaceX, has warned that AI is a threat to humankind’s existence.

But Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, in a rare interview recently, told the WSJ Magazine that there was nothing to panic about.

Hawking said everyone has a role to play in making sure that this generation and the next are fully engaged with the study of science at an early level to create “a better world for the whole human race”.

“We need to take learning beyond a theoretical discussion of how AI should be, and take action to make sure we plan for how it can be,” said Hawking, who communicates via a cheek muscle linked to a sensor and computerized voice system.

“You all have the potential to push the boundaries of what is accepted, or expected, and to think big. We stand on the threshold of a brave new world. It is an exciting - if precarious - place to be and you are the pioneers,” he said. (rtr)

The iPhone X smartphone costs $357.50 to make and sells for $999, giving it a gross margin of 64 percent, according to TechInsights, a firm that tears down technology devices and analyzes the parts inside. The iPhone 8 sells for $699 and has a gross margin of 59 percent.

The finding is surprising because technology products tend to become more profitable as they age and the parts for them drop in cost.

The iPhone X is a brand new design that went on sale on Friday, to apparently strong demand, while the iPhone 8 is an update on last year’s iPhone 7, which itself was similar to the iPhone 6 released in 2014.

Apple declined to comment on TechInsights’ analysis.

Apple is unique in the electronics industry for its ability to charge a premium price for its latest devices and for its ability to maintain that price even when selling devices through third parties like telecom carriers, said Al Cowsky, the costing analyst for TechInsights, which planned to post the results to its site late on Monday.

“Apple can be different here because they are the 800 pound gorilla,” Cowsky said.

Several of Apple’s design choices for the iPhone X pushed up its price. In particular, its 5.8-inch (14.8 cm) edge-to-edge display and associated parts cost $65.50, compared with $36 for the iPhone 8’s 4.7-inch display, the analysis found.

That is largely because the iPhone 8 uses older LCD technology, while the iPhone X uses what is called “Super AMOLED” technology, which allows for more vivid colors and a thinner overall design.

Another pricey choice was the stainless steel chassis of the iPhone X, which cost $36 versus $21.50 for the aluminum housing of the iPhone 8. Cowsky said the steel is less likely than aluminum to bend when flexed, a problem that dogged the iPhone 6 when it came out.

“This is their lesson learned from that,” he said. (rtr)

BANGLI — Dozens of Indonesian military (TNI) personnel from the 1626/Bangli Military District did a cleanup around Lake Batur on Sunday (Nov. 5). The cleanup activity that was done manually involved TNI personnel and residents of Buahan village yielded dozens of bags of garbage.

Aside from plastic waste, organic garbage was also removed from the lakeshore. Some garbage was burned on the spot and some was transported to a nearby landfill.

Commander of the 1626 / Bangli Military District, Andy Pranoto, accompanied by Chief of Staff, Suka Prajaka and Territorial Section Officer, Ida Bagus Mahendra, said that Lake Batur looks beautiful at first glance but a closer look reveals that the largest lake in Bali is surrounded by loads of garbage. Bangli’S Military District therefore took the initiative to conduct a cleanup along with residents of Buanhan village in order to maintain the sustainability of the lake.

Gianyar who asked the local military command to get involved in increasing the attractiveness of Lake Batur. The request was submitted by the regent during the military district commander’s farewell-welcome speech recently. “So, this activity basically aims to maintain the environmental sustainability of Lake Batur”, he said.

Since it was done manually, Commander Pranoto admitted that the results of cleanup was less than maximal as only garbage along the edge of the lake could be collected. In the future, his institution will invite related institutions in Bangli’s district government to get together to clean up the lake using mechanical tools. That way, Lake Batur can become free of plastic waste as well as weeds. Commander Pranoto also said that he hope that the cleanup activities carried out by the Bangli Military District on Lake Batur will be able to raise public awareness about caring more about the lake environment.

Hamlet chief of Buahan, Wayan Suastika, said the garbage found at the edge of Lake Batur in Buahan area is not the result of local residents haphazardly throwing away their garbage but rather the result of neighbouring villages throwing their garbage out there. (kmb40)

DENPASAR - Bali’s Consumer Protection Foundation (YLPK) has asked that the government guarantee the security of consumer’s personal data in relation to the government policies requiring consumers of prepaid cell-phone cards to re-register as of October 31, 2017. This is to ensure that personal data belonging to consumers are not abused for commercial or noncommercial purposes without the consumers’ consent as the owner of the personal data.

Consumers need to made aware of the new policy. “Dissemination of information regarding this policy needs to be more intensive. Consumer’s should not loose access to their numbers just because they were not aware of the new regulation”, said I Putu Armaya, Director of YLPK Bali, on Sunday (Nov. 5).

There is fear that re-registration

will not be able to control the amount of cell phone numbers nor the misuse of cell-phone numbers for criminal activities. So far, consumers are still allowed to have many phone numbers. Every consumer is allowed to have up to three numbers per operator. So with six different cell operators this means that each person is allowed a total of 18 different cell-phone numbers.

The huge number of cell-phones numbers that reaches upward of 350 million, said Armaya is caused by promotional deals and tariff wars and between cell service operators. Consumers can be mislead by these tariff wars and promotions.

The government must therefor crack down on these tariff wars and promotions that mislead consumers. “There needs to be more than disciplinary measures and re-registration”, he said. (kmb42)

Invoking harmony for the universe, pekelem ritual held at Tanah Lot Temple

TABANAN - The clanging sound of holy bells and the fragrance of flowers and incense colored the temple area of ??Tanah Lot, Tabanan, on Monday afternoon (Nov. 6). Mantras and ritual prayers were chanted as part of the pekelem ceremony that was officiated over by Ida Rsi Agung Suryayana from Griya Candra Kusuma, Munggu village, Mengwi, Mangupura and Ida Rsi Istri Candra Kusuma Dewi.

The ceremony aimed at achieving harmpny for the universe ran smoothly even though there is fear in Bali about the the alert level for Mount Agung.

“This ceremony is meant to harmonize of the universe. It is not only intended for Tabanan alone, but for the whole island of Bali”, explained Ida Rsi Istri Candra Kusuma Dewi. Ida Rsi further explained that this pekelem ritual was classified a a medium level one and and involved the sacrifice of goats, geese, ducks, chicken and black ayaban bebangkit, black suci, an apologetic ritual, caru berumbun as well as purificatory paraphernalia and a procession.

The pakelem ceremony was commenced with a prayerful procession from a spot representing Tanah Lot Temple to an appropriate location on Tanah Lot Beach where the pakelem ritual sacrifice took place by drowning the animals in the sea One of the residents appointed as the coordinator of the pakelem ceremony in Tanah Lot, I Made Suarnata, explained that the pakelem ceremony is performed as form of gratitude to the lord of the sea, Lord Varuna and to the Queen of the South coast and to ask for salvation. Similar rituals were also held at three other places representing nyegara gunung (ocean-moutain); Ponjok Batu Temple (Buleleng), Tirta Empululu (Jembrana) and Lebih Beach (Gianyar).

Suarnata said the pakelem ceremony was performed based on the initiative of a number of Balinese people including hobbyists, the Bali Organic Association (BOA) Foundation, and volunteers of Sustainable Bali with support from the local government of Tabanan through the Public Welfare Agency. “The Hindu community in Bali believes that Bali is guarded in all

directions. We are giving such prayers at a number of points in Bali that are considered to have good universal vibrations, to ask for salvation – to avoid any form of disasters”, he explained.

Division Head of the Tabanan Public Welfare Agency, Made Irma Yanti Sundari, welcomed the ceremony as she said it serves the positive purpose of asking for safety and for disasters to be avoided. Similarly these ceremonies are meant to ask for the salvation of mankind and the entire universe and particularly that the volcanic activity of Mount Agung subside and that no disaster occur.

The Pakelem ceremony at Tanah Lot also drew the attention of a number of tourists that happened to be crowd this ??famous tourist attraction in the Tabanan and many of them took photos of the series of rituals being performed. (kmb28)

MANGUPURA - The decrease of the alert level of Mount Agung to level 3 (watch) is being taken advantage of by Badung’s district government to restore tourism in their region. The Badung Tourism Office has been sent to potential tourists markets in Manchester and London to promote tourism in Bali.

Head of the Badung Tourism Office, I Made Badra, said that his agency is continuously working on letting potential tourism markets know that the alert level for Mount Agung has decreased to ‘watch’ level and that regardless, the world famous tourist destination of Badung is safe form the danger of an eruption anyway.

“We did Sales Missions and Table Top in Manchester yesterday.

Today, we attended the World Travel Market (WTM) London, which is the second largest market after ITB Berlin. We are here to convince the European market not to delay their trips to Bali, especially to Badung”, said Made Badra, when contacted on Monday (Nov. 6). Tourism players in both these countries understand the condition of tourism in Bali amid the the threat of an eruption of Mount Agung. “We have explained that the alert level for Mount Agung has been decreased to level 3 and buyers now understand this .We are optimistic about being able to increase the number of tourists who visit Badung by 24 percent in 2018” he explained.

The Badung Tourism Office, he said that been continuously promoting tourism in Badung to potential markets such as Britain that was ranked first for the last two years years in terms of the number of direct visitors to Bali. “We got a positive response from buyers and tour operators from the City of Manchester.

Hopefully, we can do such promotion every year so that the tour operators can get the latest information about

the actual conditions in Bali”, added Badra.

Their target is to have a total of 5, 850, 000 foreign visitors in 2017. So far there have been a total of 4, 446, 437 tourists from January to September this year, so 76.18 percent of the goal for the whole year.

“Our target can be reached as long as Mount Agung does not erupt. The warning status has in fact impacted the number of visitors, with some cancellations though the numbers have remained relatively stable” he said. For the same periode last year, there has actually been an increase of 23.18 percent in the number of visitors. As of September visitors to Badung are still predominantly from China with 1, 217, 719, folowed by Australia (853, 334), Japan (204,210 visits), India (203,838 visits) and England (148,409 visits).

“Now that an additional 11 direct international flights routes have been added to Bali, we are more optimistic about the number of tourists continuing to increase” addd Badra. Regional Secretary of Badung, Wayan Adi Arnawa said that the Mount Agung situation has impacted tourism in Bali and ultimately the revenue of Badung whose regionally generated revenue (PAD) is very much dependent on tourism.

“Since we live from tourism, I have asked the regional development planning board (Bappeda) to look into the details of the impact this situation has had. Hopefully it has not been too significant”, said Arnawa.

The target for the regionally generated revenue of Badung in the regional budget 2017 is IDR 5.2 trillion, while in the general budget policy and provisional budget plafond priority (KUA-PPAS) 2017 the revenue is targeted at IDR 5.7 trillion and regional budget at IDR 6.2 trillion. (kmb27)

“Before reducing the alert level to watch evaluations are conducted.

If the seismicity continues to decline and other tools also show a decrease in activity there is the possibility that the alert level will be reduced again. However, so far, the alert level still remains at ‘ watch’ as the seismicity still remains high’ he said. (kmb41)

Sony pulls Spacey film from festival, going ahead with December release

LOS ANGELES - Sony Pictures on Monday withdrew a movie starring Kevin Spacey from a Los Angeles film festival following sexual misconduct allegations against the actor, but said it was going ahead with a planned U.S. movie theater release in December.

“All the Money in the World,” about the 1973 kidnapping of teenager John Paul Getty III, features Spacey as his grandfather, the late U.S. oil billionaire Jean Paul Getty.

The film was due to have a red carpet world premiere at the American Film Institute’s (AFI) annual festival in Los Angeles on Nov. 16.

“Given the current allegations surrounding one of its actors and out of respect for those impacted, it would be inappropriate to celebrate at a gala at this difficult time. Accordingly, the film will be withdrawn,” Sony’s TriStar Pictures unit said in an emailed statement.

Spacey’s representatives did not return a request for comment on Monday regarding Sony’s decision. Reuters was unable to independently confirm any of the allegations.

The Sony statement said there were 800 other actors, writers and crew members involved in the movie, and the film would open wide as planned on Dec. 22.

Spacey apologized last month to actor Anthony Rapp, who accused him of trying to seduce him in 1986 when Rapp was 14. Spacey’s representatives later said he was seeking unspecified treatment.

CNN reported last week that eight current and former employees of the Netflix TV show “House of Cards,” who were not identified, alleged sexual misconduct against Spacey, the TV show’s star.

AFI said in a statement that it supported Sony’s decision.

Netflix said on Friday that it had severed ties with Spacey because of the allegations.

It said it would not be involved in further production of “House of Cards” with Spacey. Producer Media Rights Capital said Spacey had been suspended from the political show. (rtr)

After WhatsApp threat, Indonesia steps up Internet obscenity purge

JAKARTA - Indonesia said on Tuesday it will summon executives of messaging services and search engines, including Google, to demand they remove obscene content, but dropped a threat to block WhatsApp Messenger after “GIF” images were taken off the service. The Internet is already partly censored in Indonesia, but the latest steps mark an escalation against a background of growing conservatism in the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation.

“We will call all providers, including Google to clean up their network,” said Semuel Pangerapan, a director general at Indonesia’s communication and informatics ministry. Google, which is owned by Alphabet Inc, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The ministry vowed on Monday to block Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp Messenger within 48 hours if the service did not ensure that obscene Graphics

Interchange Format (GIF) images were removed.

WhatsApp said on Monday that message encryption prevented it from monitoring the animated graphics files, known as GIFs, that are available on the app through third-party services. It said it had asked the government instead to work with those providers, which integrate their technology into WhatsApp to allow users to enter keywords to search for GIFs.

Tenor Inc, one of the third parties, said on Tuesday it had “already implemented a fix for the content issues”.

Users of Whatsapp Messenger on iPhones were unable to access Tenor GIFs on Tuesday. “We see now that they have done what we asked,” Pangerapan said. “Therefore, we won’t block them because they have responded to us.”

WhatsApp Messenger is widely used in Indonesia. Civil servants

and ministers, including Minister of Communication and Information Rudiantara, are among the heaviest users. Giphy Inc., a New York City GIFs company that also works with WhatsApp, did not respond to requests for comment.

Giphy offers partners a feature to filter inappropriate images.

Indonesia’s warning did not appear to target Gboard, a keyboard app developed by Google that provides comparable GIF search results but must be installed separately from WhatsApp on most devices. Rudiantara has vowed in the past to clamp down on pornography sites and, after meetings with representatives of Google,

Twitter Inc and Facebook in August, he said his ministry’s priority was to protect Indonesians from content that promoted radicalism, terrorism and drugs. Rudiantara, who uses one name, said however that the government was not trying to foster “a regime of censorship”.
