‘Mad Men’ in the hunt for an Emmy Awards record Associated Press Writer
LOS ANGELES — “Mad Men” is making a bid for Emmy history, while a couple of fresh-faced girls are flirting with possible first-time nods at the 64th annual Primetime Emmy nominations. “Mad Men,” AMC’s saga of ad exec Don Draper and 1960s America, has won four best drama series trophies to tie with “Hill Street Blues,” ‘’L.A. Law” and “The West Wing.” A fifth nomination at Thursday morning’s announcement ceremony would give it a shot at the record. Newcomers “Girls” and “New Girl” are vying for honors in the comedy series categories. The nominations by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences were to be announced by late-night host Jimmy Kimmel and Kerry Washington of “Scandal.” Kimmel, who will host the Sept. 23 Emmy ceremony on ABC, is stepping in for Nick Offerman of “Parks and Recreation,” who was delayed on the East Coast by weather problems. Besides “Mad Men,” other front-runners for one of the six best drama slots include “Homeland,” ‘’Breaking Bad,” ‘’The Good Wife,” ‘’Game of Thrones,” ‘’Boardwalk Empire” and “Downton Abbey.” PBS’ “Downton Abbey,” the elegant British-born soap opera that was named
best miniseries last year for its first season, switched categories this time. ABC’s “Modern Family,” honored as best comedy series for two consecutive years, likely will get a shot at extending its streak and earning more Emmy gold for its stars, including past winners Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell and Eric Stonestreet. Although actually winning trophies may be shooting for the moon, “Girls,” created by and starring Lena Dunham, and “New Girl,” with Zooey Deschanel, are good bets for nominations. “Girls” is HBO’s “current spin on ‘Sex and the City,’ which was a strong past Emmy favorite,” said Tom O’Neil, editor of award website Gold Derby. “Lena Dunham is the toast of Hollywood today,
so expect her new show to do swell.” Fox’s “New Girl,” a critical success that’s earned respectable ratings, also could reap bids, O’Neil said. “Girls” is a darkly comedic comingof-age story, while “New Girl” uses Deschanel’s offbeat charm in a more standard sitcom format. The two are part of a wave of femalecentric comedies that hit TV in the wake of the box-office success of “Bridesmaids.” Also in the mix is the CBS freshman hit “2 Broke Girls,” but its raunchier tone may affect its Emmy prospects. Some lead actors hope to repeat their Emmy triumphs from last year, including winners Julianna Margulies of “The Good Wife,” Melissa McCarthy of “Mike & Molly” and Jim Parsons of “The Big Bang Theory.” Bryan Cranston, whose “Breaking Bad” drama aired outside the competition window for the 2011 awards, is back and could add to his three trophies for the role of teacher-turned-drug-maker. Emmy voters have a chance to sound a last hurrah for “House” and star Hugh Laurie and for “Desperate Housewives” and its ensemble cast. Nolan defends fans angry over ‘Knight’ reviews Associated Press Writer
LONDON — Director Christopher Nolan is defending fans irate over negative reviews of “The Dark Knight Rises.” While the final piece of Nolan’s “Dark Knight” trilogy has gotten mostly positive reviews, a few critics, including The Associated Press’ Christy Lemire, gave it a negative review. Fan response to those critics became so venomous on the review aggregator site RottenTomatoes.com that it suspended user comments late Monday. Appearing at Wednesday’s London premiere of “The Dark Knight Rises,” Nolan was quick to defend fans’ heated response to the reviews. “I think the fans are very passionate about these characters the way a lot of people are very passionate. I really don’t have an answer for it, it’s a very peculiar comment to make,” he said. Morgan Freeman, who plays Lucius Fox, called the contention “ridiculous.” “Chris wrote a fictional story that didn’t have any political thoughts in mind, so it’s like art or something you know, it’s all in the mind of the beholder,” Freeman said. The Secretary of the Rabies Management Team, dr. Ken Wirasandhi, said that the patient was showing rabies symptoms. “At first, the patient came complaining hard to breathe but after being examined, she was bitten by a dog four months ago. She didn’t get VAR injection at that time,” Ken said. He also explained that when the rabies virus already enter the brain, it is very difficult to be cured. For that reason, the spread of the virus must be sustained by the anti rabies vaccine (VAR). “Most of the died patients didn’t get any VA shot so the victim of bitten dog must get complete VAR shot. The demand of anti-rabies vaccine in Emergency Room of Sanglah Hospital by new patients bitten by dog, according to Ken, indeed had showed a decline. Daily demand of the anti-rabies vaccine averagely reached 10-20 people, while previously reached up to 30 people. Uniqueness of Balinese cuisine had made it special so that it had an added value aside from the spicy-flavored sauce in perfect combination with herbs and spices that had famously promoted the flavor of Asian food. “We want to introduce the types of Balinese cuisine, formulate the standard of Balinese cuisine and establish a commitment among the tourism stakeholders (industry) as the Balinese community itself,” he said. Transportation Agency confused to resolve congestion Denpasar (Bali Post)— The Denpasar Spatial Planning and Housing Agency (DTRP) would immediately resume the paving block installation of the second phase on Jalan Gajah Mada following the completion of the first project. As planned, this project would be worked on starting on Wednesday night (Jul 18). As scheduled, the traffic flows in the area would be closed completely because there would be a motive making of paving block at the intersection of Jalan Sulawesi, Jalan Gajah Mada and Jalan Kartini. Meanwhile, related to the traffic arrangement, the Denpasar Transportation Agency claimed to be still confused and needed more time to review it. “Just now, we organized a coordinative meeting with relevant regional working units (SKPD) such as the Transportation Agency. Its traffic engineering will be arranged and in the near future we will meet again,” said the Head of Denpasar Spatial Planning and Housing Agency (DTRP), I Kadek Kusuma Diputra. While regarding the project technical matters, the Division Head of Spatial of DTRP, Cipta Sudewa, doubling as the Project Leader, said if the project was still worked on by the original partner, namely PT Alit Wirajaya as the winning bidder of paving block installation on Jalan Gajah Mada. “If it does not rain, this evening (Wednesday night—Ed) we will start working on the second phase. Hopefully, the weather will permit so the project can be worked on and accomplished sooner,”
he said. He described, the second phase project would start from the intersection of Jalan Gajah Mada, Jalan Kartini and Jalan Sulawesi to the west through the east end of the Badung River Bridge considering the paving block was no longer allowed on the bridge pursuant to the rules on the maximal thickness of loading bridge of 5 cm above the girder. “Now, the existing asphalt layer has been 5 cm so that additional burden is no longer allowed. If added with paving blocks, it even surpasses the provisions and will be at risk of breaking down,” he explained. Related to that matter, Sudewa claimed to have made coordination with Bina Marga (Highway Dept.) of Bali Public Works Agency. Paving block installation would be expanded to the west to the intersection of Jalan Gajah Mada, Jalan Sutomo, Jalan Thamrin and Jalan Wahidin. Meanwhile, the Head of Denpasar Transportation Agency, I Gede Astika, admitted to be made dizzy and confused by the traffic arrangement. “I am dizzy where the traffic flow should be directed to. We still must assess it first to avoid any polemics as happened previously,” he said. If it should be closed completely, added Astika, there would be possibility to divert the vehicles to Jalan Gunung Kawi Utara from Jalan Gajah Mada and opening the access for vehicles from the north to Jalan Thamrin. “Well, it’s the problem. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Drug resistance to HIV medicines has been creeping higher in parts of Africa and Asia but is not steep enough to cause alarm, said a survey released by the World Health Organization on Wednesday. In low- and middle-income countries, drug resistance stood at 6.8 percent in 2010, the WHO said in its first-ever report on the matter released ahead of the International AIDS Conference in the US capital July 22-27. “That is a level that we sort of expected. It is not dramatic but we clearly need to look very carefully on how this would evolve further,” WHO AIDS chief Gottfried Hirnschall said in an interview. Drug resistance can occur when the virus mutates naturally, when treatment is interrupted or patients take the medications incorrectly. The 6.8 percent figure relates to the level of HIV drug resistance transmitted from one person to another, meaning those people were found to be resistant to the first-line of therapy they tried. The other main type of resistance is one that develops in a patient who takes medications irregularly. Since many more people in the developing world are now receiving antiretroviral drugs, experts have been closely monitoring to see whether a surge in drug resistance would accompany the increased coverage. Some eight million people in low- and middle-income countries were being treated with antiretrovirals last year, up 20 percent from 2010 according to a separate report by UNAIDS released Wednesday.

“Bulan Pejeng” in fact is a large bronze drum (nekara) of prehistoric from Bronze Age that were developed around 2000 years ago or in the beginning of century. This cultural heritage is one of the sacred article, kept in Penataran Sasih Temple in Pejeng Village, Gianyar and is located in the main street of Tampaksiring-Kintamani so no difficulty to visit it. According to popular folktale in society, “Bulan Pejeng” is the “moon” which fell down in Pejeng Village long time ago, making the village was always bright on day and night so the thieves could not do their jobs. Therefore, the “moon” was urinated so did not shine anymore until these days. The name of Penataran Sasih Temple means “the place of the moon” Temple (moon=sasih) and might relate to the story of the “moon” fell from the sky previously. Another story told of this Pejeng nekara as the ear-plug of Kebo Iwa, a powerful legendary figure who was able to carve Goa Gajah, steep bank temple of Gunung Kawi, etc. The Pejeng nekara has been introduced internationally by G.E. Rumphius, an expert in Biology through his book Amboinsche Rariteitkamer, published in 1705. Although he never been to Bali, but he had succeeded for using the information from Hendrik Leydekereker’s. In fact, this nekara is a giant nekara with large size in every detail as in height of 186.5 m and a diameter of 1.60 m for its hit zone. Around the archeological experts, this nekara is also called as nekara with head, because it has four pairs of mask decoration with bulged-out eyes, long-coned nose, and the ears wearing earrings made from coins. The decoration of the mask is not only functioned as esthetic-decorative, but more for magical symbolism for the ancestors’ symbol of magic power which bring prosperity and protect the family or the society from any danger. Another decoration which has the magical symbolism is the decoration of octagonal star on the hit zone, border design, feather, and so on. “Bulan Pejeng” is a masterpiece work of technology and metallurgy that reached its peak on Bronze Age. This cultural heritage is a significant mixture between modern and complicated metal technology and art creativity which full magical symbolism values as can be seen from its shape and patterns. All of it is the proof of a local Balinese wisdom in its spectacular work about 2000 years ago, far before India reached Bali. The dynamism of Balinese wisdom at that time also was proved by finding five stone moulds in Manuaba Village, Gianyar for making smaller nekara from Pejeng nekara. This fact has proved enough that Balinese people had succeeded in developing local metal industry. Clay mould for making arrow head also has been found in West Java. In addition, Balinese people had produced a stone nekara which is kept in a temple in Carangsari Village (Badung), is now another success of Balinese wisdom. A whale got stranded at Pangkungtibah Village’s beach, Kediri, last Wednesday (18/7). The whale was found breathing although because it was too big to bring it back to ocean, it then died which local buried it at the shores. The black skin whale was first found around 4 pm local time where several locals passing by saw something huge stranded on the shores. When it was found it was still moving which is suspected to have stranded a while ago. In minutes locals heard about the news and sought to see the mammal. Yet beach managers chose to quickly bury it as there’s a project going on. “Many locals felt disappointed couldn’t look at it,” Ayu (40), a witness, explained. It was stated the mammal was in 3 meters length and as big as a drum. When locals picked it up, blood was still flowing from its body yet it is not known what have caused it stranded. Some locals even said it’s a shark instead but according to Ayu it looked similar to a dolphin. WASHINGTON - The International Monetary Fund approved changes to its annual economic surveillance rules on Wednesday that now make it mandatory for the Fund to assess whether the domestic policies of a country are affecting global financial stability. Until now, IMF assessments of economic spillovers were voluntary but the 2007-2009 global financial crisis showed how quickly and
easily the economic and financial policies of one country can cascade across borders and destabilize the world.
“While oversight of members’ exchange rate policies remains at the core of Fund surveillance under the articles, the new decision will provide a basis for the Fund to engage more effectively with members on domestic economic and financial policies,” said IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde. The decision was an important step in “rebooting” the way the
IMF conducts surveillance - the monitoring and assessment of members’ economies, and global economic and financial developments, Legarde said. The new rules will be included in the IMF’s so-called Article IV annual consultations between the IMF and governments of its 188 member countries. IMF officials said the decision had “broad sup-
port” among the membership. An IMF official said the new surveillance decision provided ground rules for fair and evenhanded monitoring of such things as exchange rates, monetary and fiscal policies, and capital flows. The IMF is expected to publish a more substantial document on the new surveillance decision next week.

SYDNEY - Flagship Australian airline Qantas said Thursday it was ditching BlackBerry for Apple’s iPhone and rolling out in-flight iPad entertainment streaming, dealing a blow to the US firm’s rivals. Qantas said it was switching 1,300 employee phones from Canada-based Research in Motion’s BlackBerry to the popular Apple device after a “large majority” of workers expressed a preference for the iPhone. “Transition from the BlackBerry to the iPhone is part of Qantas’ broader mobility strategy and, once complete, will result in significant cost savings,” a Qantas spokeswoman told AFP. Analysts said it was a fatal blow for RIM and would likely trigger “significantly more defections” from the outdated BlackBerry maker, which is struggling to remain relevant against its fast-evolving rivals. “It’s very significant on the level of credibility and their reputation,” said telecoms analyst Paul Budde, referring to RIM, which now holds just 0.1 percent of Australia’s smartphone market. The Qantas mobile switch is part of a wider push onto the Apple platform, which will also see the airline’s pilots given iPads to replace paper charts, flight plans and manuals, mirroring moves by US carriers. Qantas is also rolling out live iPad streaming of in-flight entertainment on its domestic Boeing 767 fleet following a successful trial of the “QStreaming” technology, developed with Panasonic. LONDON - Regulators are investigating Credit Agricole, HSBC, Deutsche Bank and Societe Generale over the Libor manipulation scandal that claimed the boss of British bank Barclays, the Financial Times reported Thursday. Citing sources close to the probes, the FT said regulators were examining evidence of links between traders at all four banks and Barclays’ former trader Philippe Moryoussef.
US futures regulator the Commodity Futures Trading Commission recently accused an an unnamed trader of having “orchestrated an effort to align trading strategies among traders at multiple banks”. According to the business publication, this trader was former euroswaps trader Moryoussef. Britain’s financial regulator the Financial Services Authority (FSA) is investigating seven institutions over the scandal, a senior official told lawmakers on Monday. Tracey McDermott said the probe
involved “not only British banks.” Barclays was fined £290 million ($452 million, 360 million euros) after admitting attempting to manipulate the Libor and Euribor rates between 2005 and 2009. Libor (London Interbank Offered Rate) is a flagship London instrument used as an interest benchmark throughout the world, while Euribor is the eurozone equivalent. Flooding in Denpasar submerges dozens of houses Denpasar (Bali Post)—
Heavy rain flushing Denpasar since Tuesday night (Jul 17) until Wednesday morning (Jul 18) resulted in flooding to some areas in Denpasar. As recorded, dozens of houses in a number of dense residential areas in Denpasar were awash at adult knee-high. Based on field observation, the most awash region occurred at Monang Maning and the surrounding areas such as Jalan Subur. The worst condition affected the residential area on Jalan Gunung Kalimutu III, Monang-Maning hamlet, Pemecutan Klod, West Denpasar. In this area, there were dozens of flooded houses inhabited by 85 families. Similar condition also happened to the boarding house owned by Yuda. At home of the resident living permanently on Jalan Imam Bonjol Gang Rahayu occurred 14 rooms where all were flooded. Until 11:30 a.m. local time on Wednesday (Jul 18), the rain water was still flooding the rooms. A number of residents looked busy moving their stuff from the room to a safer place, while the other residents were busy throwing water by means of patch-up tools such as bucket, dustpan and the like. Puddle of water at the location reached the adult knee-high. “A number of household furniture, mattresses and electronic equipment had been under water,” said Irisadi, one of the boarding house dwellers who were busy cleaning the furniture affected by the flooding. According to Irisadi, the residential area was indeed frequently
hit by flooding. However, it was the worst flooding during his stay there. Moreover, the heavy rain had started to flush from Tuesday night until Wednesday morning so the pool of water was high enough. “As usual, the flooding only reached the front courtyard and did not get into the house,” he said. Based on the report of Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Denpasar, a number of areas in Denpasar were inundated. They were the settlement on Jalan Tukad Yeh Aye, Jalan Tukad Balian, Jalan Tukad Batanghari, Jalan Nakula, Jalan Gunung Agung, Jalan Mahendradatta, Jalan Subur, Jalan Patuha, Jalan Gunung Cemara, courtyard of SMPN 7 Denpasar secondary school, Jalan Ahmad Yani Utara, as well as some points at other locations. “The worst condition occurred on Jalan Subur, while in settle ments on Jalan Gunung Cemara, Jalan Gunung Kalimutu and Jalan Patuha the water went into the houses. The water level was almost exactly the same, namely at the adult knee-high, but the water at these two locations receded more quickly,” said the Section Head of Rehabilitation of the BPBD Denpasar, AA GA Darma Putra. Boy Rafli Amar said Thursday that the man identified only as Feri was arrested Tuesday at his house in Jakarta’s Depok suburb. Police believe he is a taxidermist. They seized at least 25 stuffed animals including 14 Sumatran tigers, a lion, three leopards, three bears and a tapir from his house.
They also found two sacks full of tiger pelts and the heads of a tiger and three deer. The suspect faces up to five years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to nearly $11,000. Indonesia has 400 Sumatran tigers. They are on the brink of extinction due to rapid deforestation and poaching.

Boy Rafli Amar said Thursday that the man identified only as Feri was arrested Tuesday at his house in Jakarta’s Depok suburb. Police believe he is a taxidermist. They seized at least 25 stuffed animals including 14 Sumatran tigers, a lion, three leopards, three bears and a tapir from his house.
They also found two sacks full of tiger pelts and the heads of a tiger and three deer. The suspect faces up to five years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to nearly $11,000. Indonesia has 400 Sumatran tigers. They are on the brink of extinction due to rapid deforestation and poaching.

The absence of a post-conference statement was unprecedented in ASEAN’s 45-year history and underscored the divisions within the group over the handling of the South China Sea disputes, which involve four of its members — Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam. The four, along with China and Taiwan, have long contested ownership of potentially oiland gas-rich territories and recent spats have raised alarm. BUSINESS IMF to assess economic spillovers in new monitoring rules Reuters
WASHINGTON - The International Monetary Fund approved changes to its annual economic surveillance rules on Wednesday that now make it mandatory for the Fund to assess whether the domestic policies of a country are affecting global financial stability. Until now, IMF assessments of economic spillovers were voluntary but the 2007-2009 global financial crisis showed how quickly and
easily the economic and financial policies of one country can cascade across borders and destabilize the world.
“While oversight of members’ exchange rate policies remains at the core of Fund surveillance under the articles, the new decision will provide a basis for the Fund to engage more effectively with members on domestic economic and financial policies,” said IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde. The decision was an important step in “rebooting” the way the
IMF conducts surveillance - the monitoring and assessment of members’ economies, and global economic and financial developments, Legarde said. The new rules will be included in the IMF’s so-called Article IV annual consultations between the IMF and governments of its 188 member countries. IMF officials said the decision had “broad sup-
port” among the membership. An IMF official said the new surveillance decision provided ground rules for fair and evenhanded monitoring of such things as exchange rates, monetary and fiscal policies, and capital flows. The IMF is expected to publish a more substantial document on the new surveillance decision next week.

SYDNEY - Flagship Australian airline Qantas said Thursday it was ditching BlackBerry for Apple’s iPhone and rolling out in-flight iPad entertainment streaming, dealing a blow to the US firm’s rivals. Qantas said it was switching 1,300 employee phones from Canada-based Research in Motion’s BlackBerry to the popular Apple device after a “large majority” of workers expressed a preference for the iPhone. “Transition from the BlackBerry to the iPhone is part of Qantas’ broader mobility strategy and, once complete, will result in significant cost savings,” a Qantas spokeswoman told AFP. Analysts said it was a fatal blow for RIM and would likely trigger “significantly more defections” from the outdated BlackBerry maker, which is struggling to remain relevant against its fast-evolving rivals. “It’s very significant on the level of credibility and their reputation,” said telecoms analyst Paul Budde, referring to RIM, which now holds just 0.1 percent of Australia’s smartphone market. The Qantas mobile switch is part of a wider push onto the Apple platform, which will also see the airline’s pilots given iPads to replace paper charts, flight plans and manuals, mirroring moves by US carriers. Qantas is also rolling out live iPad streaming of in-flight entertainment on its domestic Boeing 767 fleet following a successful trial of the “QStreaming” technology, developed with Panasonic. LONDON - Regulators are investigating Credit Agricole, HSBC, Deutsche Bank and Societe Generale over the Libor manipulation scandal that claimed the boss of British bank Barclays, the Financial Times reported Thursday. Citing sources close to the probes, the FT said regulators were examining evidence of links between traders at all four banks and Barclays’ former trader Philippe Moryoussef.
US futures regulator the Commodity Futures Trading Commission recently accused an an unnamed trader of having “orchestrated an effort to align trading strategies among traders at multiple banks”. According to the business publication, this trader was former euroswaps trader Moryoussef. Britain’s financial regulator the Financial Services Authority (FSA) is investigating seven institutions over the scandal, a senior official told lawmakers on Monday. Tracey McDermott said the probe
involved “not only British banks.” Barclays was fined £290 million ($452 million, 360 million euros) after admitting attempting to manipulate the Libor and Euribor rates between 2005 and 2009. Libor (London Interbank Offered Rate) is a flagship London instrument used as an interest benchmark throughout the world, while Euribor is the eurozone equivalent. Flooding in Denpasar submerges dozens of houses Denpasar (Bali Post)—
Heavy rain flushing Denpasar since Tuesday night (Jul 17) until Wednesday morning (Jul 18) resulted in flooding to some areas in Denpasar. As recorded, dozens of houses in a number of dense residential areas in Denpasar were awash at adult knee-high. Based on field observation, the most awash region occurred at Monang Maning and the surrounding areas such as Jalan Subur. The worst condition affected the residential area on Jalan Gunung Kalimutu III, Monang-Maning hamlet, Pemecutan Klod, West Denpasar. In this area, there were dozens of flooded houses inhabited by 85 families. Similar condition also happened to the boarding house owned by Yuda. At home of the resident living permanently on Jalan Imam Bonjol Gang Rahayu occurred 14 rooms where all were flooded. Until 11:30 a.m. local time on Wednesday (Jul 18), the rain water was still flooding the rooms. A number of residents looked busy moving their stuff from the room to a safer place, while the other residents were busy throwing water by means of patch-up tools such as bucket, dustpan and the like. Puddle of water at the location reached the adult knee-high. “A number of household furniture, mattresses and electronic equipment had been under water,” said Irisadi, one of the boarding house dwellers who were busy cleaning the furniture affected by the flooding. According to Irisadi, the residential area was indeed frequently
hit by flooding. However, it was the worst flooding during his stay there. Moreover, the heavy rain had started to flush from Tuesday night until Wednesday morning so the pool of water was high enough. “As usual, the flooding only reached the front courtyard and did not get into the house,” he said. Based on the report of Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Denpasar, a number of areas in Denpasar were inundated. They were the settlement on Jalan Tukad Yeh Aye, Jalan Tukad Balian, Jalan Tukad Batanghari, Jalan Nakula, Jalan Gunung Agung, Jalan Mahendradatta, Jalan Subur, Jalan Patuha, Jalan Gunung Cemara, courtyard of SMPN 7 Denpasar secondary school, Jalan Ahmad Yani Utara, as well as some points at other locations. “The worst condition occurred on Jalan Subur, while in settle ments on Jalan Gunung Cemara, Jalan Gunung Kalimutu and Jalan Patuha the water went into the houses. The water level was almost exactly the same, namely at the adult knee-high, but the water at these two locations receded more quickly,” said the Section Head of Rehabilitation of the BPBD Denpasar, AA GA Darma Putra. A whale got stranded at Pangkungtibah Village’s beach, Kediri, last Wednesday (18/7). The whale was found breathing although because it was too big to bring it back to ocean, it then died which local buried it at the shores. The black skin whale was first found around 4 pm local time where several locals passing by saw something huge stranded on the shores. When it was found it was still moving which is suspected to have stranded a while ago. In minutes locals heard about the news and sought to see the mammal. Yet beach managers chose to quickly bury it as there’s a project going on. “Many locals felt disappointed couldn’t look at it,” Ayu (40), a witness, explained. It was stated the mammal was in 3 meters length and as big as a drum. When locals picked it up, blood was still flowing from its body yet it is not known what have caused it stranded. Some locals even said it’s a shark instead but according to Ayu it looked similar to a dolphin. Locals still talk about it up until evening and it is suspected that the whale stranded due to the south beach’s tide which lately has been strong. (kmb30)

Drug resistance to HIV medicines has been creeping higher in parts of Africa and Asia but is not steep enough to cause alarm, said a survey released by the World Health Organization on Wednesday. In low- and middle-income countries, drug resistance stood at 6.8 percent in 2010, the WHO said in its first-ever report on the matter released ahead of the International AIDS Conference in the US capital July 22-27. “That is a level that we sort of expected. It is not dramatic but we clearly need to look very carefully on how this would evolve further,” WHO AIDS chief Gottfried Hirnschall said in an interview. Drug resistance can occur when the virus mutates naturally, when treatment is interrupted or patients take the medications incorrectly. The 6.8 percent figure relates to the level of HIV drug resistance transmitted from one person to another, meaning those people were found to be resistant to the first-line of therapy they tried. The other main type of resistance is one that develops in a patient who takes medications irregularly. Since many more people in the developing world are now receiving antiretroviral drugs, experts have been closely monitoring to see whether a surge in drug resistance would accompany the increased coverage. Some eight million people in low- and middle-income countries were being treated with antiretrovirals last year, up 20 percent from 2010 according to a separate report by UNAIDS released Wednesday.

The ritual is never promoted as a tourism product, but many foreign visitors, especially from Europe, enjoy witnessing the sacred ritual. “Bulan Pejeng” in fact is a large bronze drum (nekara) of prehistoric from Bronze Age that were developed around 2000 years ago or in the beginning of century. This cultural heritage is one of the sacred article, kept in Penataran Sasih Temple in Pejeng Village, Gianyar and is located in the main street of Tampaksiring-Kintamani so no difficulty to visit it. According to popular folktale in society, “Bulan Pejeng” is the “moon” which fell down in Pejeng Village long time ago, making the village was always bright on day and night so the thieves could not do their jobs. Therefore, the “moon” was urinated so did not shine anymore until these days. The name of Penataran Sasih Temple means “the place of the moon” Temple (moon=sasih) and might relate to the story of the “moon” fell from the sky previously. Another story told of this Pejeng nekara as the ear-plug of Kebo Iwa, a powerful legendary figure who was able to carve Goa Gajah, steep bank temple of Gunung Kawi, etc. The Pejeng nekara has been introduced internationally by G.E. Rumphius, an expert in Biology through his book Amboinsche Rariteitkamer, published in 1705. Although he never been to Bali, but he had succeeded for using the information from Hendrik Leydekereker’s. In fact, this nekara is a giant nekara with large size in every detail as in height of 186.5 m and a diameter of 1.60 m for its hit zone. Around the archeological experts, this nekara is also called as nekara with head, because it has four pairs of mask decoration with bulged-out eyes, long-coned nose, and the ears wearing earrings made from coins. The decoration of the mask is not only functioned as esthetic-decorative, but more for magical symbolism for the ancestors’ symbol of magic power which bring prosperity and protect the family or the society from any danger. Another decoration which has the magical symbolism is the decoration of octagonal star on the hit zone, border design, feather, and so on. “Bulan Pejeng” is a masterpiece work of technology and metallurgy that reached its peak on Bronze Age. This cultural heritage is a significant mixture between modern and complicated metal technology and art creativity which full magical symbolism values as can be seen from its shape and patterns. All of it is the proof of a local Balinese wisdom in its spectacular work about 2000 years ago, far before India reached Bali. The dynamism of Balinese wisdom at that time also was proved by finding five stone moulds in Manuaba Village, Gianyar for making smaller nekara from Pejeng nekara. This fact has proved enough that Balinese people had succeeded in developing local metal industry. Clay mould for making arrow head also has been found in West Java. In addition, Balinese people had produced a stone nekara which is kept in a temple in Carangsari Village (Badung), is now another success of Balinese wisdom. The other bronze nekara in Pacung, Ularan (Buleleng), Ban (Karangasem), Manikliyu (Bangli), Peguyangan (Badung) is a proof that local metal industry in Bali reached its top. (Doc)

Transportation Agency confused to resolve congestion Denpasar (Bali Post)— The Denpasar Spatial Planning and Housing Agency (DTRP) would immediately resume the paving block installation of the second phase on Jalan Gajah Mada following the completion of the first project. As planned, this project would be worked on starting on Wednesday night (Jul 18). As scheduled, the traffic flows in the area would be closed completely because there would be a motive making of paving block at the intersection of Jalan Sulawesi, Jalan Gajah Mada and Jalan Kartini. Meanwhile, related to the traffic arrangement, the Denpasar Transportation Agency claimed to be still confused and needed more time to review it. “Just now, we organized a coordinative meeting with relevant regional working units (SKPD) such as the Transportation Agency. Its traffic engineering will be arranged and in the near future we will meet again,” said the Head of Denpasar Spatial Planning and Housing Agency (DTRP), I Kadek Kusuma Diputra. While regarding the project technical matters, the Division Head of Spatial of DTRP, Cipta Sudewa, doubling as the Project Leader, said if the project was still worked on by the original partner, namely PT Alit Wirajaya as the winning bidder of paving block installation on Jalan Gajah Mada. “If it does not rain, this evening (Wednesday night—Ed) we will start working on the second phase. Hopefully, the weather will permit so the project can be worked on and accomplished sooner,”
he said. He described, the second phase project would start from the intersection of Jalan Gajah Mada, Jalan Kartini and Jalan Sulawesi to the west through the east end of the Badung River Bridge considering the paving block was no longer allowed on the bridge pursuant to the rules on the maximal thickness of loading bridge of 5 cm above the girder. “Now, the existing asphalt layer has been 5 cm so that additional burden is no longer allowed. If added with paving blocks, it even surpasses the provisions and will be at risk of breaking down,” he explained. Related to that matter, Sudewa claimed to have made coordination with Bina Marga (Highway Dept.) of Bali Public Works Agency. Paving block installation would be expanded to the west to the intersection of Jalan Gajah Mada, Jalan Sutomo, Jalan Thamrin and Jalan Wahidin. Meanwhile, the Head of Denpasar Transportation Agency, I Gede Astika, admitted to be made dizzy and confused by the traffic arrangement. “I am dizzy where the traffic flow should be directed to. We still must assess it first to avoid any polemics as happened previously,” he said. Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Nolan defends fans angry over ‘Knight’ reviews Associated Press Writer
LONDON — Director Christopher Nolan is defending fans irate over negative reviews of “The Dark Knight Rises.” While the final piece of Nolan’s “Dark Knight” trilogy has gotten mostly positive reviews, a few critics, including The Associated Press’ Christy Lemire, gave it a negative review. Fan response to those critics became so venomous on the review aggregator site RottenTomatoes.com that it suspended user comments late Monday. Appearing at Wednesday’s London premiere of “The Dark Knight Rises,” Nolan was quick to defend fans’ heated response to the reviews. “I think the fans are very passionate about these characters the way a lot of people are very passionate. Nolan also weighed in on conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh’s contention that the villain in the movie, Bane, was an attempt to make a disparaging link to Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s former company Bain Capital. “I’m not sure how to address something that bizarre, to be honest. I really don’t have an answer for it, it’s a very peculiar comment to make,” he said. Morgan Freeman, who plays Lucius Fox, called the contention “ridiculous.” “Chris wrote a fictional story that didn’t have any political thoughts in mind, so it’s like art or something you know, it’s all in the mind of the beholder,” Freeman said. The Secretary of the Rabies Management Team, dr. Ken Wirasandhi, said that the patient was showing rabies symptoms. “At first, the patient came complaining hard to breathe but after being examined, she was bitten by a dog four months ago. She didn’t get VAR injection at that time,” Ken said. He also explained that when the rabies virus already enter the brain, it is very difficult to be cured. For that reason, the spread of the virus must be sustained by the anti rabies vaccine (VAR). “Most of the died patients didn’t get any VA shot so the victim of bitten dog must get complete VAR shot. The demand of anti-rabies vaccine in Emergency Room of Sanglah Hospital by new patients bitten by dog, according to Ken, indeed had showed a decline.
