Artist Christo launches 7,500 floating barrels in London LONDRES - The artist Christo on Monday unveiled 7,506 coloured barrels floating on a lake in central London, a puzzling installation designed to stimulate debate as much as the senses.

“The London Mastaba” on the Serpentine in Hyde Park, a trapezium-shaped work weighing 600 tonnes, was launched with an air of mystery by the Bulgarianborn US artist.

Twenty metres high, 30 metres wide and 40 metres long, some may see the metal barrels and wonder if there is an environmental message, thinking of barrels of oil in the heart of one of London’s green lungs.

Visible from several hundred metres away, others will see a prism, giant pixels, or a simple geometric creation.

However, the work is open to all interpretations and comes with no message attached, said its 83year-old creator.

“There are no messages: there is something in it to discover yourself. I cannot direct you. You should develop your senses,” he

said.

Christo is known for his contemporary artworks including “The Pont Neuf Wrapped” (1985), which involved wrapping the oldest bridge in Paris in polyamide fabric, and “Wrapped Reichstag” (1995), a similar project on the parliament in Berlin.

“It’s created an enormous invitation, like a stairway to the sky,” said the artist, on the banks of the lake popular with swans, ducks and tourists on pedalos.

Christo’s first major open-air art installation in Britain is in the shape of a mastaba, a type of ancient Egyptian tomb.

The floating platform is held in place with anchors.

Red with a white candy stripe on the sides, and blue, mauve and red on the ends, the barrels are a striking contrast with the lakeside surroundings.

“The colours will transform with the changes in the light and its reflection on the Serpentine lake will be like an abstract painting,” said Christo. (afp)

Marvel’s “Black Panther” racked up four awards, including best movie. Its star, Chadwick Boseman, won best hero and best movie performance while his nemesis Michael B. Jordan was named best villain.

Boseman, 40, got his hero statuette from presenters Olivia Munn and Zazie Beetz -- and promptly gave it to James Shaw Jr., the man who stopped a mass shooter at a Tennessee Waffle House.

“Receiving an award for playing a superhero is amazing but it’s even greater to acknowledge the heroes that we have in real life,”

Boseman said.

He beckoned the 29-year-old on stage and led the crowd in a standing ovation.

“If you don’t know James Shaw Jr., he fought off a gunman in Antioch, Tennessee, at a Waffle House.

He saved lives,” he said.

Shaw singlehandedly wrestled the AR-15 semi-automatic rifle from the hands of Travis Reinking as he was allegedly reloading in the middle of a shooting rampage in April.

Four people were killed and two others wounded at the Waffle House restaurant in Nashville, America’s

country music capital.

But Shaw has been credited with saving many more lives. He suffered a graze wound from a bullet and burns on his right hand from grabbing the hot barrel of the gun.

He was hailed as a hero by the survivors and their family members, but has repeatedly has rejected the label, saying he acted for reasons of self-preservation.

For the second year running, Netflix hit “Stranger Things” took best show and best actor in a show for Millie Bobby Brown. Noah Schnapp picked up best frightened performance. (afp)

Toll rises to five after quake in Japan’s Osaka

The death toll in a powerful earthquake that rocked Japan’s Osaka on Monday has risen to five, with some 370 injured, officials said Tuesday, urging vigilance against landslides ahead of heavy rains.

The fifth fatality was a 66year-old man who was found dead on Tuesday under a number of books and CDs in his home, a local government spokeswoman said.

The other casualties were a nineyear-old girl who was killed when a wall collapsed at her school follow-

ing the 5.3-magnitude quake, along with two men and a woman, all in their eighties, who were trapped under a wall or furniture.

“The government will keep up efforts to rescue people,” top government spokesman Yoshihide Suga told reporters, though he added that there were no reports of

missing people.

And he said officials would do “everything we can” to quickly restore gas and running water to homes cut off after the quake.

Japan’s meteorological agency meanwhile warned that heavy rains expected in Osaka on Tuesday and Wednesday could cause landslides in the region, with the quake potentially having loosened earth.

Suga also called for residents to be on alert, saying “landslide disasters are possible in the region

that experienced strong tremors, even if rains are light.”

The weather agency said the region could see 50 millimetres of rain by Wednesday morning and up to 100 millimetres in the 24 hours after that to Thursday morning.

“Normally we don’t issue warnings with this level of rains, but after the quake it could cause landslides, floods and swelling river streams,” official Masakatsu Oya told AFP. Authorities have also

warned of the possibility of strong aftershocks in the coming week and especially in the next two to three days.

Souvenir makers in Abuan Susut

Tight competition, order decreases to 50 percent

BANGLI - Increasingly tight competition makes craftsmen more difficult to develop and market their craft products. Inevitably, their order also tends to decrease. This condition is also experienced by one of the souvenir makers at Serokadan, Abuan village, Susut, I Dewa Made Alit.

Dewa Alit said on Monday (Jun. 18) that he has been pursuing souvenir craft such as key chains, fish, pencils, magnets, fruit and others since 1995. To market his craft products, he targeted buyers in Bali and overseas such as the Maldives, Egypt, America and other countries. Unfortunately, his order has continued to decrease significantly since 2014. This was sparked by the low people’s interest in the handicrafts, and affected by the increasingly fierce competition.

“The decline of order reached 50 percent. Other than due to increasingly low people’s interest in handicraft, the tight competition coming from overseas such as Thailand, China and other countries also sparks it. Selling price of the handicrafts made by the countries is much cheaper than our price. Probably, it happens due to cheaper labor wages, the government also supports and labor in the country get subsidies,” he said.

The making of his accessories is still done manually and uses local wood such as albizia. Moreover, he said the price of albizia wood is very expensive today. This wood can only be used for building and handicraft products. Other than having expensive price, the price of other necessities such as paint is also expensive.

“For building needs, people are willing to buy at expensive price because they only buy once. Meanwhile, for handicraft needs like this we buy all the times. Sometimes the wood owners sell theirs in log condition that costs higher. “If we do not dare to buy at expensive price, maybe we do not get any wood. So, I am forced to buy at expensive price. On this condition, I only get quite thin profit margin from the sales,” he explained.

When asked about the amount of labor producing such craft, Dewa Alit asserted that previously he employed up to hundreds of workers to assist him in the manufacture. However, in line with the time that goes by now there are only dozens of workers remaining to survive. Moreover, all the workers are close relatives. “The handicrafts product made reach thousands of pieces in accordance with the number of the order.

The delivery is usually made every two months reaching one container truck,” he added. (nan)

ioned in earthy shades of olive, cinnamon, rust, chocolate, charcoal, teal, grey and black, meticulously wrapped up within the sleek symmetry of its contemporary architectural design. Conceived to respect the Balinese culture, the local context, and the existing architecture and artwork, each adjoining area from the entrance to the indoor dining space, to the buffet to the deli to the outdoor dining area has been cleverly designed to generate a uniquely different mood. Sustainable timbers and stone, including teak, bamboo, volcanic lava stone and other local materials, as well as chair fabrics and finishes are presented in a myriad of textures and patterns such as the all-pervasive leaf vein structures. ISAAW: Unbelievable Robots!

TODAY, we take a peek into a world that we found absolutely fascinating, and frankly, a bit daunting once we began our research for this article.

There are countless emerging fields in robotics: “soft robotics”, “mega robotics”, “nanorobotics”, “agricultural robotics”, “defense robotics”, “swarm robotics”, “surgical robotics” and the list goes on.

After diving into the subject for a couple hours, it is clear that robotics are our future and we will need a very intentional futuristic approach to staying on the “up-side” of the possibilities.

There’s a lot to consider, just as with any major innovation. Will robots take away jobs and displace human connections? Are the conspiracy theories true about Google producing massive armies of robots poised to take over the world?

We really don’t seem that far away from what used to be pure science fiction! Does our boundless curiosity and ingenuity have us racing into this future like a child running with scissors?

Maybe. But in our future articles about robotics, we might quell concerns about some disquieting aspects of the rise of robots.

Take the issue of robots replacing humans in our workforce for example. My research today led me to a fresh perspective on that. Sure, “agricultural robots” may end up eliminating the back-breaking jobs of field laborers, but someone will have to build and maintain those robots. We’ll need to embrace this future with forward-thinking job training. We could shift the work of humans to safer and more humane conditions! The same is true in fields like mining, disaster response, and hazardous manufacturing.

To put that in a bit of perspective, the wellloved TV cartoon called The Jetsons was created

by Hanna-Barbera in 1961, the same year that Unimate – a robotic arm – was installed at a General Motors plant to do repetitive welding.

The writers of The Jetsons were amazingly visionary when we consider the TED Talk we opened with today!

So now we all have a solid foundation when it comes to considering our future in the robotic revolution. Perhaps it’s a bit of a comfort that we’ve already been on this ride for decades, and the last 50 years demonstrates that the possibilities and benefits may far outweigh the pitfalls if we’re smart. Eid al Fitr and peak season

Room occupancy in Kuta and Legian reaches 90 percent DENPASAR — July and August belong to peak season months.

Apart from foreign tourists, domestic tourists also come to Bali. June of this year in particular there is the Eid al Fitr holiday. So the hotel occupancy, especially in the Kuta and Legian area, turns high enough reaching 90 percent.

Chairman of Kuta Executive Club, Kahar Salamun, said this year’s Eid holidays are more crowded than previous year. It happens because the current Eid holiday is longer. So, hotel occupancy is high reaching 90 percent.

Meanwhile, the room occupancy on normal days reaches 60 to 75 percent. Other than long Eid holidays, this high occupancy is caused by peak season in June to August.

Many tourists from Australia and Europe spend their holidays in Bali.

“Our occupancy started to increase on June 11 and the peak happened on June 13, reaching 90 percent. Today the occupancy remains good, but tomorrow will return to decline because the offices start to open tomorrow. Most guests also start to go home,” he said on Monday (June. 18). However, in the near future the peak season will come in July and August.

Eid holidays even brought in a blessing to hotels as they always get high occupancy almost every such holiday. Legian is recognized to be accommodation base of Australian and European tourists. With the arrival of Australian and Europeans, the room occupancy could reach 75 to 80 percent. Coupled with domestic tourists spending long Eid holidays, the occupancy reached 90 percent. “Australia and Europe have holidays in July,” he added.

Meanwhile, in the same period of June through July is also the

school holiday. Admittedly, the school holidays do not have too significant impact on the room occupancy in Kuta area. “Indeed, there is an increase but not significant,” he said.

In the past five years, he has experienced different atmosphere.

Though during the period of JulyAugust is peak season, the occupancy is not like five years ago.

Probably it is sparked by oversupply of hotel room particularly in the Kuta and Legian area. “Today, there are many hotels. The occupancy remains good but does not have the peak as ever before.

About five or ten years ago, our occupancy must be and always above 90 percent. However, due to current oversupply it has an impact on the reduction of occupancy. Besides, we experience the reduction in average room rate due to competition,” he said.

Formerly, the circle of tourism businesspeople in Kuta and Legian named July-August as the peak season. Meanwhile today, there is no such term of peak season. “It is quite crowded and there is an increase but not as crowded as it used to,” he added.

In addition, in the past the oversupply happened to 3- and 4-starred hotels, whereas today 5-stared hotels have also been oversupply due to the addition of 5-starred hotel rooms.

Airbnb also has a significant impact on hotel occupancy conditions. House or apartment can be rented at a cheaper price. “In the Airbnb platform, there is a lot of accommodation actually hidden and without permission. They do promotion through the Airbnb, so the price is certainly cheaper,” he said. (kmb42)

NEGARA — Gong Kebyar of Jembrana envoy that will make its performance in the Bali Arts Festival XL at the Denpasar Art Center was tested on Sunday night (Jun. 17) at Ardha Chandra Amphitheater of Jagatnatha Temple, Negara. The dance and gamelan entertainment by local students were able to draw thousands of spectators who filled the stage. The gong kebyar troupe making its performance at the night comprised the Karya Budaya teenage gamelan troupe from West Tegal Badeng and Githa Swara women’s troupe from Dauh Waru Village.

The Karya Budaya from Tegal Badung troupe featured Legong Kuntul Dance posing a classic legong dance depicting the elegance of heron in the middle of paddy fields. The gong kebyar performance was then resumed with the contemporary gamelan composition entitled Dedet Apeteng, Rerejangan creation dance and fragmentary show entitled Silih-Silih Kambing (“Borrowed to be Silently Taken Over”).

Meanwhile, the Githa Swara women’s troupe featured a Lelambatan composition entitled Bayu Premana followed by creation gamelan composition entitled Baleman Sambuk (“Ember of Coconut Fiber”).

It was resumed with Nelayan (Fisherman) Dance depicting the life of fisherman catching fish every day.

At the end, the women’s troupe presented creation dance entitled Tua-Tua Keladi (Dirty Old Man). (olo)

The execution came as Thailand’s coup leader-turned-premier Prayut Chan-O-Cha prepares to travel to Britain and France on a highly-publicised official visit.

The trip may now see the former army chief face awkward questions over the use of the death penalty as well as Thailand’s wider human rights record since he seized power in a 2014 coup.

Prayut, however, defended capital punishment on Tuesday, telling reporters that in order to maintain peace and order in society, executions are “still a necessity and what people want”.

“There are many serious cases happening today,” he said.

The Department of Corrections, which oversees one of the world’s highest incarceration rates, said 325 convicts have been executed since 1935, the majority by shooting.

That practice ended on December 11, 2003. Between then and 2009 a further six were executed by lethal injection.

Monday’s execution serves as a “lesson to deter those who wanted to commit serious crime”, the department added in a statement.

But rights groups and the United Nations hit out at the sudden resumption of the death penalty, which remains mandatory for a number of offences including aggravated murder.

“This is a deplorable violation of the right to life,” Amnesty International said, accusing the kingdom of reneging on commitments to move towards abolition of the death penalty.

Thailand was “also putting itself out of step with the current global shift away from capital punishment”.

Figures provided to Amnesty by the Ministry of Justice show 510 people including 94 women were on death row at the end of last year.

Nearly 200 had exhausted all final appeals -- like Theerasak. As a last resort they can seek a pardon from Thailand’s king.

The death penalty is still in force in numerous countries in Asia and China remains the world’s top executioner.

The International Federation of Human Rights said Thailand would have become a “de facto abolitionist” had it not carried out any executions before August 24, 2019, 10 years after the last death sentences were carried out.

SEOUL - US and South Korean officials confirmed Tuesday the suspension of scheduled joint military drills, making good on a pledge

Some 17,500 US military personnel were due to take part in the Freedom Guardian drills.

“We are still coordinating additional actions.

No decisions on subsequent war games have been made,” Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White said in confirming the suspension.

“There is no impact on Pacific exercises outside of the Korean Peninsula.”

White said US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and National Security Advisor John Bolton would meet later this week at the Pentagon to discuss the issue.

Last week, Trump made the surprise announcement that the US would halt “war games” with its South Korean security ally -- without making clear when the freeze would begin.

The US leader raised eyebrows by describing the exercises as “provocative” -- a term used by the North. US and South Korean forces have been training together for years, and routinely rehearse everything from beach landings to an invasion from the North, or even “decapitation” strikes targeting the North Korean regime.

BUSINESS Asian, European stocks plunge as China-US trade war fears brew Hong Kong and Shanghai stocks led a sell-off across Asian and European markets Tuesday on rising fears of a trade war after Donald Trump threatened fresh tariffs on Chinese imports and Beijing warned of countermeasures.

Trump said he had asked the US Trade Representative to identify $200 billion worth of imports to be targeted, adding he would hit a further $200 billion if Beijing retaliates.

Investors were already on edge after the world’s top two economies on Friday announced tit-for-tat measures on goods valued at about $50 billion as the US president pushes ahead with his protectionist America First agenda.

“The trade relationship between the United States and China must be much more equitable,” he said in explaining his decision.

China slammed the threats as “blackmail” and warned that if the US followed through with the tariffs, it would “have no choice but to take comprehensive measures of a corresponding number and quality and take strong, powerful countermeasures”.

The development took some by surprise and stoked fears of a potentially damaging trade war between the world’s top two economies.

“That was quick and sudden, reminding us just how quickly things can get right out of hand,” said Stephen Innes, head of Asia-Pacific trading at OANDA. “Indeed, this is moving beyond ‘tit-for-tat’ levels and, predictably, investors are running for cover under the haven umbrellas as global equity indices are crumbling under the weight of an escalating trade war. “Buckle up as this could get messy.” (afp)

Russian opposition leader Navalny calls for protests during World Cup Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny called Tuesday for nationwide protests to take place across the country during the World Cup over a government plan to raise the retirement age for the first time in its modern history.

The Kremlin announced the unpopular hike to the state pension age for women and men, going up to 63 and 65 respectively, on the day the tournament started on June 15.

Writing on Instagram, Navalny called for Russians to take to the streets on July 1: “Let’s be honest: the increase of the pension age by Putin and (Prime Minister) Medvedev is a pure crime.” “This is the robbery of several dozen million people under the guise of an ‘overdue reform’,” he added.

Navalny said his team had so far applied for permits to hold demonstrations in cities that are not hosting the World Cup, in line with a ban on protests where the games are taking place between 15 and July 15.

But he also called for the protests to be “nationwide” -- implying demonstrations will take place in Moscow and other major Russian cities -- and called for Russians to take part in them “whatever their political beliefs”.

More than 1.5 million Russians have signed a petition against the government proposal, which

would be the first raise in the pension age in nearly 90 years.

The state pension age in Russia is currently the same as it was under the Soviet Union: 55 for women and 60 for men.

With life expectancy on the rise, more than a quarter of the Russian population of 146.9 million is now over that age.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev called for the pension age to be gradually increased from next year, reaching its targets in 2028 for men and 2034 for women.

Navalny, a constant critic of President Vladimir Putin, was freed from prison the same day the World Cup started in Russia, after serving a 30-day sentence for organising an unsanctioned protest. The 42year-old, who was barred from taking part in March’s presidential election, was sentenced a month ago after calling for the demonstrations ahead of Putin’s fourth inauguration. Upon his release, he immediately denounced the high cost of hosting the World Cup, alleging that much of the money was embezzled by businessmen seen to be close to Putin. (afp)

Their lecturer then sent the students to get the fundamentals of Balinese classical dance from the successor of the late I Ketut Kantor.

These students did not only learn to dance, but also tried to express themselves by learning to dance, make a mask and know more about Balinese life. In practicing the dance, they are trained directly by Ketut Wirtawan, Wayan Artawa, Nyoman Juniati, Tut Nik and Wayan Darmawan.

The class of making a mask is provided by Ketut Wirtawan.

“Although the schedule is held by their campus, there are also students attending the program repeatedly on their personal ac-

count,” he said.

Kakul Mas Dance Studio which is also the home of I Ketut Wirtawan’s family is natural remaining to refer to the kosala-kosali (Balinese geomancy) rules, commonly used in the making of Balinese house. That’s why many foreign tourists often visit the house as a kind of tourist attraction. They come from various countries escorted by a tour guide. “There are always tourists making a visit here.

They like to see traditional house as well as painting of Batuan style,” said Wirtawan.

Ketut Wirtawan is often taken advantage as an object when painting on canvas. There are always unique and interesting things in Bali. Gumang Temple at Bugbug, Karangasem, for instance, will hold a ritual to be thronged by thousands of Hindu pilgrims from all over Bali. Among the thousands of the pilgrims, the majority will climb to the hill top to the Gumang Temple with offerings including roasted suckling pig.

Apparently, every birth of resident, especially at Bugbug customary village, it must include a roasted suckling pig. This offering should not be performed as soon as the baby was born, but can also be done after it grows adult.

To get to the Gumang Temple is indeed not easy. Pilgrims have to walk about three kilometers with uphill terrain. Moreover, the pilgrims do not only bring themselves, but must also bring the offerings and roasted suckling pig.

This unique spectacle can be seen on Thursday (Oct. 13) after the sanctified effigy of Ida Bhatara of Bebandem, Ngis, Jasri and Bugbug customary village is enthroned at Gumang Temple.

According to chief of Bugbug customary village, Jero Wayan Mas Suyasa, the offering of roasted suckling pig implies a sincere offering of local residents to the deity. “The offering of roasted suckling pig serves as an expression of devotion. Other than presenting this offering of every birth, many pilgrims also present roasted suckling pig to pay a vow after getting success in economy or recovery of diseases,” he said.

Such offerings of roasted suckling pig can reach thousands of pieces. These offerings are not only from residents of Bugbug, but also from other villages in Bali. It is also done by diaspora of Bugbug mostly living in Buleleng. Besides, there

are also from residents of Bugbug married outside the village. Psychically, they still remember to devoted deities at their home birthplace.

“The offering of roasted suckling pig on every birth must not necessarily be paid as soon as after the newborn. In order not to become a burden, this offering can be paid any time when the people are ready.

Moreover, it can be done after the child grows adult,” said Mas Suyasa, recently.

This tradition has lasted for generations. Every implementation of the usaba gumang is believed by all residents of Bugbug as the opportunity to gain blessing of salvation and wellbeing for the descendants.

Bugbug residents have confidence in the safety of their children after presenting this offering. If they have son, their roasted suckling pig are hogs, while if they have daughter their offerings will be of sows. This tradition does not only involve the residents of Bugbug. However, it is also believed by residents of Bugbug getting married outside the village where they should practice the tradition until now.

In the procession of usaba gumang taking place from around 13:00, thousands of residents that will be presenting the offerings have thronged the road access to Gumang Temple while carrying roasted suckling pig, rice cone and other offerings. This usaba gumang is always welcomed vivaciously by the residents of Bugbug as the most densely populated village in Karangasem with about 3,000 families and other villages. It is inseparable from the quite high awareness of paying devotional services and holy sacrifices of the local community because it has been instilled early by their elders. (kmb)

Record 68.5 million people displaced worldwide: UN

GENEVA - A record 68.5 million people have been forced flee their homes due to war, violence and persecution, notably in places like Myanmar and Syria, the UN said on Tuesday.

By the end of 2017, the number was nearly three million higher than the previous year and showed a 50-percent increase from the 42.7 million uprooted from their homes a decade ago, according to a report by the UN refugee agency.

The current figure is equivalent to the entire population of Thailand, and the number of people forcibly displaced equates to one in every 110 persons worldwide, it said.

“We are at a watershed, where success in managing forced displacement globally requires a new and far more comprehensive approach so that countries and communities aren’t left dealing with this alone,” said UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi.

But around 70 percent of that number are people from just 10 countries, he told reporters in Geneva ahead of the report’s launch.

“If there were solutions to conflicts in those 10 countries, or in some of them at least, that huge figure, instead of rising every year, could start going down,” he said, calling for more political will to halt the crises driving so many from their homes.

Two students die after drowning at Payangan Beach

JEMBER - Two students from Bondowoso District -- Rofin, 14, and Muhammad Radip, 12, -- died from drowning while bathing in a river estuary area of Payangan Beach in Sumberejo Village, Jember District, East Java Province.

“Today, we found the body of one of the missing victims, who was swept away by the waters of the river until Payangan Beach.

Two died in this incident,” Head of the Emergency and Logistics Division of the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency of Jember Heru Widagdo stated here on Monday.

According to the group of tourists from Bondowoso, on Sunday (June 17) afternoon, the students had gathered at the river to relax, but later the victim went along with his friends to bathe at the edge of the river estuary downstream to Payangan Beach Plawangan, which is a South sea beach.

“The Search and Rescue team of tourism personnel and fishermen, who saw the victims bathe, had reminded their families to not take a bath there. However, the families of the victims ignored the warning of the officers and local residents,” he explained.

“The body of the victim Muhammad Radip was found this morning by fishermen around the Payangan Beach Plawangan after which the Love Bay SAR team, along with the fisherman and his family, retrieved the body of the victim, who was taken by the Ambulu Police`s car to the nearest health center,” he stated.

He urged tourists to be heedful of the signs posted by the management of tourism attractions for their comfort and safety while enjoying the Lebaran holidays in Jember District to prevent the recurrence of similar incidents. (ant)

JAKARTA - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi monitored the return flow of Eid or Lebaran 2018 travelers on several locations from air using a helicopter on Monday.

“I want to see the condition of the return flow when travelers are entering the peak time, so that efforts can be made soon if there is a problem with traffic,” Sumadi told the press at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport, Jakarta, on Monday.

The transportation minister was accompanied by Director General of Land Transport Budi Setiyadi and Managing Director of PT Jasa Marga Desi Arryani while monitoring the travelers` return flow.

A number of locations were reviewed, including toll roads and

non toll roads that lead to Tegal, Pekalongan, Kali Kuto Bridge, and Cikopo in Java.

Several hundred rescue personnel were searching for survivors Tuesday after a boat sank in Indonesia with about 80 people aboard, the national disaster agency said. The wooden vessel was travelling on Lake Toba, a popular tourist destination on Sumatra island, when it capsized Monday afternoon.

At least one person has been found dead and 18 others were rescued, authorities said. But local officials said dozens of people are likely still unaccounted for nearly a day after the sinking.

“There are 65 people who say their relatives are missing. So we are now searching for them,” Riadil Lubis, head of North Sumatra disaster agency, told AFP. Authorities said they believe the ferry that sank on Lake Toba was operating illegally with no manifest or passenger tickets. It was not clear if any foreigners were on board.

TV footage from Monday showed a group of passengers bobbing in the choppy water as a rescue boat approached. Grief-stricken relatives waited for news, including one survivor who lost hold of her child in

the confusion.

“It happened so quickly,” Juwita, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, told TVOne. “I wanted to grab my child but I couldn’t. There were three people stacked on top of him.”

The search was called off Monday evening due to bad weather and low visibility, but it resumed Tuesday morning with about 350 personnel involved in the rescue effort.

Muslim-majority Indonesia has been celebrating the Islamic festival of Eid since Friday and millions go on holiday during the festivities, with Lake Toba a key tourist destination.

The lake fills the crater of a supervolcano that is believed to have erupted tens of thousands of years ago. Maritime accidents are common in Indonesia, a 17,000 island archipelago nation where many depend on ferries and other boats to get around, despite lax safety standards.

Last week, a traditional wooden boat with about 40 people capsized in the island of Sulawesi, killing more than a dozen people. In 2015, a ferry sank near Sulawesi island leaving 78 people dead. (afp)

PARIS - The Red Bull Formula One team announced Tuesday it is splitting with Renault and will use Honda engines from next season after agreeing an initial two-year deal.

Red Bull “has reached an agreement with Honda Motor Co Ltd to race with the Japanese manufacturer’s power units for the 2019 and 2020 Formula 1 seasons,” it said in a statement.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said: “This multi-year agreement with Honda signals the start of an exciting new phase in Aston Martin Red Bull Racing’s

efforts to compete not just for grand prix wins but for what is always our goal –- championship titles.

“After careful consideration and evaluation we are certain this partnership with Honda is the right direction for the team. We have been impressed by Honda’s commitment to F1, by the rapid steps they have made in recent times with our sister team Scuderia Toro Rosso, and by the scope of their ambition, which matches our own.”

Honda president Takahiro Hachigo welcomed a “deal that is fair and equitable for all parties”

De Gea endured an evening to forget in Spain’s opening match against Portugal on Friday, committing a howling error to allow Cristiano Ronaldo to score his second goal on the way to a hat-trick in the 3-3 thriller in Sochi.

A hat-trick from the five-time world player of the year snatched a thrilling 3-3 draw for the European champions against Spain in a heavyweight Group B showdown in Sochi.

It was Ronaldo’s 51st career hat-trick, and the 51st in the tournament’s history, as the Real Madrid star became just the fourth player to score in four World Cups.

“I am very happy, it’s a nice personal record to have, one more

in my career,” said Ronaldo. “For me the most important thing is to emphasise what the team did against one of the favourites to win this World Cup. Despite lifting the trophy at Euro 2016, Portugal are not widely viewed as among the favourites in Russia but can take a big step towards the last 16 with victory over Morocco in Moscow on Wednesday.

PARIS - The Red Bull Formula One team announced Tuesday it is splitting with Renault and will use Honda engines from next season after agreeing an initial two-year deal.

Red Bull “has reached an agreement with Honda Motor Co Ltd to race with the Japanese manufacturer’s power units for the 2019 and 2020 Formula 1 seasons,” it said in a statement.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said: “This multi-year agreement with Honda signals the start of an exciting new phase in Aston Martin Red Bull Racing’s

efforts to compete not just for grand prix wins but for what is always our goal –- championship titles.

“After careful consideration and evaluation we are certain this partnership with Honda is the right direction for the team. Record 68.5 million people displaced worldwide: UN

GENEVA - A record 68.5 million people have been forced flee their homes due to war, violence and persecution, notably in places like Myanmar and Syria, the UN said on Tuesday.

By the end of 2017, the number was nearly three million higher than the previous year and showed a 50-percent increase from the 42.7 million uprooted from their homes a decade ago, according to a report by the UN refugee agency.

The current figure is equivalent to the entire population of Thailand, and the number of people forcibly displaced equates to one in every 110 persons worldwide, it said.

“We are at a watershed, where success in managing forced displacement globally requires a new and far more comprehensive approach so that countries and communities aren’t left dealing with this alone,” said UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi.

But around 70 percent of that number are people from just 10 countries, he told reporters in Geneva ahead of the report’s launch.

“If there were solutions to conflicts in those 10 countries, or in some of them at least, that huge figure, instead of rising every year, could start going down,” he said, calling for more political will to halt the crises driving so many from their homes.

Two students die after drowning at Payangan Beach

JEMBER - Two students from Bondowoso District -- Rofin, 14, and Muhammad Radip, 12, -- died from drowning while bathing in a river estuary area of Payangan Beach in Sumberejo Village, Jember District, East Java Province.

“Today, we found the body of one of the missing victims, who was swept away by the waters of the river until Payangan Beach.

Two died in this incident,” Head of the Emergency and Logistics Division of the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency of Jember Heru Widagdo stated here on Monday.

According to the group of tourists from Bondowoso, on Sunday (June 17) afternoon, the students had gathered at the river to relax, but later the victim went along with his friends to bathe at the edge of the river estuary downstream to Payangan Beach Plawangan, which is a South sea beach.

“The Search and Rescue team of tourism personnel and fishermen, who saw the victims bathe, had reminded their families to not take a bath there. However, the families of the victims ignored the warning of the officers and local residents,” he explained.

the three students to the Payangan Beach Plawangan of Jember. The beach officers and local residents attempted to save the victims.

“Angga Erlangga, 12, was rescued, while Rofin was found dead, and another victim named Mohammed Radip was swept away by the waters of Payangan Beach and was found on Monday morning around the site,” he revealed.

Widagdo confirmed that on receiving the report of a victim having drowned on Sunday afternoon, the BPBD of Jember had coordinated with the National Agency of Search and Relief and joint SAR team in the area of the scene.

“The body of the victim Muhammad Radip was found this morning by fishermen around the Payangan Beach Plawangan after which the Love Bay SAR team, along with the fisherman and his family, retrieved the body of the victim, who was taken by the Ambulu Police`s car to the nearest health center,” he stated.

He urged tourists to be heedful of the signs posted by the management of tourism attractions for their comfort and safety while enjoying the Lebaran holidays in Jember District to prevent the recurrence of similar incidents. (ant)

JAKARTA - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi monitored the return flow of Eid or Lebaran 2018 travelers on several locations from air using a helicopter on Monday.

“I want to see the condition of the return flow when travelers are entering the peak time, so that efforts can be made soon if there is a problem with traffic,” Sumadi told the press at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport, Jakarta, on Monday.

The transportation minister was accompanied by Director General of Land Transport Budi Setiyadi and Managing Director of PT Jasa Marga Desi Arryani while monitoring the travelers` return flow.

A number of locations were reviewed, including toll roads and

non toll roads that lead to Tegal, Pekalongan, Kali Kuto Bridge, and Cikopo in Java.

“We also conducted a groundbased review to monitor the condition of toll roads and non-toll roads,” he explained.

He added that, in general, the return flow of travelers went on well, even though there were some points that were experiencing congestion. The result of the homecoming flow evaluation also went on well, and there were people who were still going home after Lebaran.

Several hundred rescue personnel were searching for survivors Tuesday after a boat sank in Indonesia with about 80 people aboard, the national disaster agency said. The wooden vessel was travelling on Lake Toba, a popular tourist destination on Sumatra island, when it capsized Monday afternoon.

At least one person has been found dead and 18 others were rescued, authorities said. But local officials said dozens of people are likely still unaccounted for nearly a day after the sinking.

“There are 65 people who say their relatives are missing. So we are now searching for them,” Riadil Lubis, head of North Sumatra disaster agency, told AFP. Authorities said they believe the ferry that sank on Lake Toba was operating illegally with no manifest or passenger tickets. It was not clear if any foreigners were on board.

TV footage from Monday showed a group of passengers bobbing in the choppy water as a rescue boat approached. Grief-stricken relatives waited for news, including one survivor who lost hold of her child in

the confusion.

“It happened so quickly,” Juwita, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, told TVOne. “I wanted to grab my child but I couldn’t. There were three people stacked on top of him.”

The search was called off Monday evening due to bad weather and low visibility, but it resumed Tuesday morning with about 350 personnel involved in the rescue effort.

Muslim-majority Indonesia has been celebrating the Islamic festival of Eid since Friday and millions go on holiday during the festivities, with Lake Toba a key tourist destination.

The lake fills the crater of a supervolcano that is believed to have erupted tens of thousands of years ago. Maritime accidents are common in Indonesia, a 17,000 island archipelago nation where many depend on ferries and other boats to get around, despite lax safety standards.

BUSINESS Asian, European stocks plunge as China-US trade war fears brew Hong Kong and Shanghai stocks led a sell-off across Asian and European markets Tuesday on rising fears of a trade war after Donald Trump threatened fresh tariffs on Chinese imports and Beijing warned of countermeasures.

Trump said he had asked the US Trade Representative to identify $200 billion worth of imports to be targeted, adding he would hit a further $200 billion if Beijing retaliates.

Investors were already on edge after the world’s top two economies on Friday announced tit-for-tat measures on goods valued at about $50 billion as the US president pushes ahead with his protectionist America First agenda.

“The trade relationship between the United States and China must be much more equitable,” he said in explaining his decision.

China slammed the threats as “blackmail” and warned that if the US followed through with the tariffs, it would “have no choice but to take comprehensive measures of a corresponding number and quality and take strong, powerful countermeasures”.

The development took some by surprise and stoked fears of a potentially damaging trade war between the world’s top two economies.

“That was quick and sudden, reminding us just how quickly things can get right out of hand,” said Stephen Innes, head of Asia-Pacific trading at OANDA. “Indeed, this is moving beyond ‘tit-for-tat’ levels and, predictably, investors are running for cover under the haven umbrellas as global equity indices are crumbling under the weight of an escalating trade war. “Buckle up as this could get messy.” (afp)

Russian opposition leader Navalny calls for protests during World Cup Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny called Tuesday for nationwide protests to take place across the country during the World Cup over a government plan to raise the retirement age for the first time in its modern history.

The Kremlin announced the unpopular hike to the state pension age for women and men, going up to 63 and 65 respectively, on the day the tournament started on June 15.

Writing on Instagram, Navalny called for Russians to take to the streets on July 1: “Let’s be honest: the increase of the pension age by Putin and (Prime Minister) Medvedev is a pure crime.” “This is the robbery of several dozen million people under the guise of an ‘overdue reform’,” he added.

Navalny said his team had so far applied for permits to hold demonstrations in cities that are not hosting the World Cup, in line with a ban on protests where the games are taking place between 15 and July 15.

But he also called for the protests to be “nationwide” -- implying demonstrations will take place in Moscow and other major Russian cities -- and called for Russians to take part in them “whatever their political beliefs”.

More than 1.5 million Russians have signed a petition against the government proposal, which

would be the first raise in the pension age in nearly 90 years.

The state pension age in Russia is currently the same as it was under the Soviet Union: 55 for women and 60 for men.

With life expectancy on the rise, more than a quarter of the Russian population of 146.9 million is now over that age.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev called for the pension age to be gradually increased from next year, reaching its targets in 2028 for men and 2034 for women.

Navalny, a constant critic of President Vladimir Putin, was freed from prison the same day the World Cup started in Russia, after serving a 30-day sentence for organising an unsanctioned protest. The 42year-old, who was barred from taking part in March’s presidential election, was sentenced a month ago after calling for the demonstrations ahead of Putin’s fourth inauguration. One of their lecturers had learned mask dance directly from the late I Ketut Kantor. Their lecturer then sent the students to get the fundamentals of Balinese classical dance from the successor of the late I Ketut Kantor.

These students did not only learn to dance, but also tried to express themselves by learning to dance, make a mask and know more about Balinese life. In practicing the dance, they are trained directly by Ketut Wirtawan, Wayan Artawa, Nyoman Juniati, Tut Nik and Wayan Darmawan.

The class of making a mask is provided by Ketut Wirtawan.

“Although the schedule is held by their campus, there are also students attending the program repeatedly on their personal ac-

count,” he said.

Kakul Mas Dance Studio which is also the home of I Ketut Wirtawan’s family is natural remaining to refer to the kosala-kosali (Balinese geomancy) rules, commonly used in the making of Balinese house. That’s why many foreign tourists often visit the house as a kind of tourist attraction. They come from various countries escorted by a tour guide. “There are always tourists making a visit here.

There are always unique and interesting things in Bali. Gumang Temple at Bugbug, Karangasem, for instance, will hold a ritual to be thronged by thousands of Hindu pilgrims from all over Bali. Among the thousands of the pilgrims, the majority will climb to the hill top to the Gumang Temple with offerings including roasted suckling pig.

Apparently, every birth of resident, especially at Bugbug customary village, it must include a roasted suckling pig. This offering should not be performed as soon as the baby was born, but can also be done after it grows adult.

To get to the Gumang Temple is indeed not easy. Pilgrims have to walk about three kilometers with uphill terrain. Moreover, the pilgrims do not only bring themselves, but must also bring the offerings and roasted suckling pig.

This unique spectacle can be seen on Thursday (Oct. 13) after the sanctified effigy of Ida Bhatara of Bebandem, Ngis, Jasri and Bugbug customary village is enthroned at Gumang Temple.

According to chief of Bugbug customary village, Jero Wayan Mas Suyasa, the offering of roasted suckling pig implies a sincere offering of local residents to the deity. “The offering of roasted suckling pig serves as an expression of devotion. Other than presenting this offering of every birth, many pilgrims also present roasted suckling pig to pay a vow after getting success in economy or recovery of diseases,” he said.

Such offerings of roasted suckling pig can reach thousands of pieces. These offerings are not only from residents of Bugbug, but also from other villages in Bali. It is also done by diaspora of Bugbug mostly living in Buleleng. Besides, there

are also from residents of Bugbug married outside the village. Psychically, they still remember to devoted deities at their home birthplace.

“The offering of roasted suckling pig on every birth must not necessarily be paid as soon as after the newborn. In order not to become a burden, this offering can be paid any time when the people are ready.

Moreover, it can be done after the child grows adult,” said Mas Suyasa, recently.

This tradition has lasted for generations. Every implementation of the usaba gumang is believed by all residents of Bugbug as the opportunity to gain blessing of salvation and wellbeing for the descendants.

Bugbug residents have confidence in the safety of their children after presenting this offering. If they have son, their roasted suckling pig are hogs, while if they have daughter their offerings will be of sows. This tradition does not only involve the residents of Bugbug. However, it is also believed by residents of Bugbug getting married outside the village where they should practice the tradition until now.

In the procession of usaba gumang taking place from around 13:00, thousands of residents that will be presenting the offerings have thronged the road access to Gumang Temple while carrying roasted suckling pig, rice cone and other offerings. This usaba gumang is always welcomed vivaciously by the residents of Bugbug as the most densely populated village in Karangasem with about 3,000 families and other villages. It is inseparable from the quite high awareness of paying devotional services and holy sacrifices of the local community because it has been instilled early by their elders. (kmb)

People buy water at IDR 500,000 per 2,000 liters to meet the needs of washing and toilet needs.

For people raising livestock or cultivating agricultural land will

Theerasak Longji was executed on Monday, six years after his conviction for stabbing a 17-year-old student 24 times to steal his mobile phone and wallet.

The execution came as Thailand’s coup leader-turned-premier Prayut Chan-O-Cha prepares to travel to Britain and France on a highly-publicised official visit.

The trip may now see the former army chief face awkward questions over the use of the death penalty as well as Thailand’s wider human rights record since he seized power in a 2014 coup.

Prayut, however, defended capital punishment on Tuesday, telling reporters that in order to maintain peace and order in society, executions are “still a necessity and what people want”.

“There are many serious cases happening today,” he said.

The Department of Corrections, which oversees one of the world’s highest incarceration rates, said 325 convicts have been executed since 1935, the majority by shooting.

That practice ended on December 11, 2003. Between then and 2009 a further six were executed by lethal injection.

Monday’s execution serves as a “lesson to deter those who wanted to commit serious crime”, the department added in a statement.

But rights groups and the United Nations hit out at the sudden resumption of the death penalty, which remains mandatory for a number of offences including aggravated murder.

“This is a deplorable violation of the right to life,” Amnesty International said, accusing the kingdom of reneging on commitments to move towards abolition of the death penalty.

Thailand was “also putting itself out of step with the current global shift away from capital punishment”.

Figures provided to Amnesty by the Ministry of Justice show 510 people including 94 women were on death row at the end of last year.

Nearly 200 had exhausted all final appeals -- like Theerasak. As a last resort they can seek a pardon from Thailand’s king.

The death penalty is still in force in numerous countries in Asia and China remains the world’s top executioner.

The International Federation of Human Rights said Thailand would have become a “de facto abolitionist” had it not carried out any executions before August 24, 2019, 10 years after the last death sentences were carried out.

“We are still coordinating additional actions.

No decisions on subsequent war games have been made,” Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White said in confirming the suspension.

“There is no impact on Pacific exercises outside of the Korean Peninsula.”

White said US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and National Security Advisor John Bolton would meet later this week at the Pentagon to discuss the issue.

Last week, Trump made the surprise announcement that the US would halt “war games” with its South Korean security ally -- without making clear when the freeze would begin.

The US leader raised eyebrows by describing the exercises as “provocative” -- a term used by the North. US and South Korean forces have been training together for years, and routinely rehearse everything from beach landings to an invasion from the North, or even “decapitation” strikes targeting the North Korean regime.

ISAAW: Unbelievable Robots!

TODAY, we take a peek into a world that we found absolutely fascinating, and frankly, a bit daunting once we began our research for this article.

There are countless emerging fields in robotics: “soft robotics”, “mega robotics”, “nanorobotics”, “agricultural robotics”, “defense robotics”, “swarm robotics”, “surgical robotics” and the list goes on.

After diving into the subject for a couple hours, it is clear that robotics are our future and we will need a very intentional futuristic approach to staying on the “up-side” of the possibilities.

There’s a lot to consider, just as with any major innovation. Will robots take away jobs and displace human connections? Are the conspiracy theories true about Google producing massive armies of robots poised to take over the world?

We really don’t seem that far away from what used to be pure science fiction! Does our boundless curiosity and ingenuity have us racing into this future like a child running with scissors?

Maybe. But in our future articles about robotics, we might quell concerns about some disquieting aspects of the rise of robots.

Take the issue of robots replacing humans in our workforce for example. My research today led me to a fresh perspective on that. Sure, “agricultural robots” may end up eliminating the back-breaking jobs of field laborers, but someone will have to build and maintain those robots. We’ll need to embrace this future with forward-thinking job training. We could shift the work of humans to safer and more humane conditions! The same is true in fields like mining, disaster response, and hazardous manufacturing.

To put that in a bit of perspective, the wellloved TV cartoon called The Jetsons was created

by Hanna-Barbera in 1961, the same year that Unimate – a robotic arm – was installed at a General Motors plant to do repetitive welding.

The writers of The Jetsons were amazingly visionary when we consider the TED Talk we opened with today!

So now we all have a solid foundation when it comes to considering our future in the robotic revolution. Perhaps it’s a bit of a comfort that we’ve already been on this ride for decades, and the last 50 years demonstrates that the possibilities and benefits may far outweigh the pitfalls if we’re smart. Eid al Fitr and peak season

Room occupancy in Kuta and Legian reaches 90 percent DENPASAR — July and August belong to peak season months.

Apart from foreign tourists, domestic tourists also come to Bali. June of this year in particular there is the Eid al Fitr holiday. So the hotel occupancy, especially in the Kuta and Legian area, turns high enough reaching 90 percent.

Chairman of Kuta Executive Club, Kahar Salamun, said this year’s Eid holidays are more crowded than previous year. It happens because the current Eid holiday is longer. So, hotel occupancy is high reaching 90 percent.

Meanwhile, the room occupancy on normal days reaches 60 to 75 percent. Other than long Eid holidays, this high occupancy is caused by peak season in June to August.

Many tourists from Australia and Europe spend their holidays in Bali.

“Our occupancy started to increase on June 11 and the peak happened on June 13, reaching 90 percent. Today the occupancy remains good, but tomorrow will return to decline because the offices start to open tomorrow. Most guests also start to go home,” he said on Monday (June. 18). However, in the near future the peak season will come in July and August.

Eid holidays even brought in a blessing to hotels as they always get high occupancy almost every such holiday. Legian is recognized to be accommodation base of Australian and European tourists. With the arrival of Australian and Europeans, the room occupancy could reach 75 to 80 percent. Coupled with domestic tourists spending long Eid holidays, the occupancy reached 90 percent. “Australia and Europe have holidays in July,” he added.

Meanwhile, in the same period of June through July is also the

school holiday. Admittedly, the school holidays do not have too significant impact on the room occupancy in Kuta area. “Indeed, there is an increase but not significant,” he said.

In the past five years, he has experienced different atmosphere.

Though during the period of JulyAugust is peak season, the occupancy is not like five years ago.

Probably it is sparked by oversupply of hotel room particularly in the Kuta and Legian area. “Today, there are many hotels. The occupancy remains good but does not have the peak as ever before.

About five or ten years ago, our occupancy must be and always above 90 percent. However, due to current oversupply it has an impact on the reduction of occupancy. Besides, we experience the reduction in average room rate due to competition,” he said.

Formerly, the circle of tourism businesspeople in Kuta and Legian named July-August as the peak season. Meanwhile today, there is no such term of peak season. “It is quite crowded and there is an increase but not as crowded as it used to,” he added.

In addition, in the past the oversupply happened to 3- and 4-starred hotels, whereas today 5-stared hotels have also been oversupply due to the addition of 5-starred hotel rooms.

Airbnb also has a significant impact on hotel occupancy conditions. House or apartment can be rented at a cheaper price. “In the Airbnb platform, there is a lot of accommodation actually hidden and without permission. The gong kebyar troupe making its performance at the night comprised the Karya Budaya teenage gamelan troupe from West Tegal Badeng and Githa Swara women’s troupe from Dauh Waru Village.

The Karya Budaya from Tegal Badung troupe featured Legong Kuntul Dance posing a classic legong dance depicting the elegance of heron in the middle of paddy fields. The gong kebyar performance was then resumed with the contemporary gamelan composition entitled Dedet Apeteng, Rerejangan creation dance and fragmentary show entitled Silih-Silih Kambing (“Borrowed to be Silently Taken Over”).

Meanwhile, the Githa Swara women’s troupe featured a Lelambatan composition entitled Bayu Premana followed by creation gamelan composition entitled Baleman Sambuk (“Ember of Coconut Fiber”).

It was resumed with Nelayan (Fisherman) Dance depicting the life of fisherman catching fish every day.

Tight competition, order decreases to 50 percent

BANGLI - Increasingly tight competition makes craftsmen more difficult to develop and market their craft products. Inevitably, their order also tends to decrease. This condition is also experienced by one of the souvenir makers at Serokadan, Abuan village, Susut, I Dewa Made Alit.

Dewa Alit said on Monday (Jun. 18) that he has been pursuing souvenir craft such as key chains, fish, pencils, magnets, fruit and others since 1995. To market his craft products, he targeted buyers in Bali and overseas such as the Maldives, Egypt, America and other countries. Unfortunately, his order has continued to decrease significantly since 2014. This was sparked by the low people’s interest in the handicrafts, and affected by the increasingly fierce competition.

“The decline of order reached 50 percent. Other than due to increasingly low people’s interest in handicraft, the tight competition coming from overseas such as Thailand, China and other countries also sparks it. Selling price of the handicrafts made by the countries is much cheaper than our price. Probably, it happens due to cheaper labor wages, the government also supports and labor in the country get subsidies,” he said.

The making of his accessories is still done manually and uses local wood such as albizia. Moreover, he said the price of albizia wood is very expensive today. This wood can only be used for building and handicraft products. Other than having expensive price, the price of other necessities such as paint is also expensive.

“For building needs, people are willing to buy at expensive price because they only buy once. Meanwhile, for handicraft needs like this we buy all the times. Sometimes the wood owners sell theirs in log condition that costs higher. “If we do not dare to buy at expensive price, maybe we do not get any wood. So, I am forced to buy at expensive price. On this condition, I only get quite thin profit margin from the sales,” he explained.

When asked about the amount of labor producing such craft, Dewa Alit asserted that previously he employed up to hundreds of workers to assist him in the manufacture. However, in line with the time that goes by now there are only dozens of workers remaining to survive. Moreover, all the workers are close relatives. “The handicrafts product made reach thousands of pieces in accordance with the number of the order.

Taman Gita now flaunts a fresh and exciting new plumage fash-

ioned in earthy shades of olive, cinnamon, rust, chocolate, charcoal, teal, grey and black, meticulously wrapped up within the sleek symmetry of its contemporary architectural design. Conceived to respect the Balinese culture, the local context, and the existing architecture and artwork, each adjoining area from the entrance to the indoor dining space, to the buffet to the deli to the outdoor dining area has been cleverly designed to generate a uniquely different mood. Sustainable timbers and stone, including teak, bamboo, volcanic lava stone and other local materials, as well as chair fabrics and finishes are presented in a myriad of textures and patterns such as the all-pervasive leaf vein structures. The ceiling, meanwhile, mirrors the ash grey

and brown geometrical floor pattern with square sections framed by wooden beams housing recessed lighting, complemented by ring pendant lamps that illuminate the tables from above. The grand entranceway, which is incorporated within a Balinese split gateway – a theme that extends into the interior – is marked with a flourish by a pendulous bamboo lighting installation, reminiscent of a set of Balinese wind-chimes.

Designer tables and chairs are crafted in rich dark wood with marble-topped finishes in the raised floor and banquette-seating areas, while solid timber slatted tables spill across the outdoor terrace. Banquettes feature Spanish-style lumbar cushions, which are suspended from a pole to ensure the optimum

position for the back comfort of the guests, and cosy two-seater and four-seater sofas await breakfast guests in the entrance bay and the triangle bay, coordinated with mood lighting from classic table lamps. In the buffet and deli areas, wall spaces are filled with shelves and alcoves showcasing Balinese artefacts; glass-fronted cooler cabinets are stocked with cold cuts and other goodies; tilted breadboards and wooden shelves display a wide selection of breads, and wooden crates are laden with freshly baked bread rolls above a tri-coloured hexagonal tiled floor. Finally, ‘the heavenly garden of music’, which is the meaning of the name ‘Taman Gita’ has not been forgotten – the much-loved storyboard of wall plaques featuring pairs, trios and

groups of musicians playing all the instruments of a gamelan orchestra amid the flowers and trees of a divine garden, endures as before, in perfect harmony with its contemporary new environment.

Artist Christo launches 7,500 floating barrels in London LONDRES - The artist Christo on Monday unveiled 7,506 coloured barrels floating on a lake in central London, a puzzling installation designed to stimulate debate as much as the senses.

“The London Mastaba” on the Serpentine in Hyde Park, a trapezium-shaped work weighing 600 tonnes, was launched with an air of mystery by the Bulgarianborn US artist.

Twenty metres high, 30 metres wide and 40 metres long, some may see the metal barrels and wonder if there is an environmental message, thinking of barrels of oil in the heart of one of London’s green lungs.

Visible from several hundred metres away, others will see a prism, giant pixels, or a simple geometric creation.

However, the work is open to all interpretations and comes with no message attached, said its 83year-old creator.

“There are no messages: there is something in it to discover yourself. I cannot direct you. You should develop your senses,” he

said.

Christo is known for his contemporary artworks including “The Pont Neuf Wrapped” (1985), which involved wrapping the oldest bridge in Paris in polyamide fabric, and “Wrapped Reichstag” (1995), a similar project on the parliament in Berlin.

“It’s created an enormous invitation, like a stairway to the sky,” said the artist, on the banks of the lake popular with swans, ducks and tourists on pedalos.

Christo’s first major open-air art installation in Britain is in the shape of a mastaba, a type of ancient Egyptian tomb.

The floating platform is held in place with anchors.

Red with a white candy stripe on the sides, and blue, mauve and red on the ends, the barrels are a striking contrast with the lakeside surroundings.

“The colours will transform with the changes in the light and its reflection on the Serpentine lake will be like an abstract painting,” said Christo. (afp)

‘Black Panther’ star honors real-life hero at MTV awards

LOS ANGELES - Landmark blockbuster “Black Panther” and nostalgic horror sensation “Stranger Things” shared the spoils Monday with a real-life hero at the MTV Movie and TV Awards.

Marvel’s “Black Panther” racked up four awards, including best movie. Its star, Chadwick Boseman, won best hero and best movie performance while his nemesis Michael B. Jordan was named best villain.

Boseman, 40, got his hero statuette from presenters Olivia Munn and Zazie Beetz -- and promptly gave it to James Shaw Jr., the man who stopped a mass shooter at a Tennessee Waffle House.

“Receiving an award for playing a superhero is amazing but it’s even greater to acknowledge the heroes that we have in real life,”

Boseman said.

He beckoned the 29-year-old on stage and led the crowd in a standing ovation.

“If you don’t know James Shaw Jr., he fought off a gunman in Antioch, Tennessee, at a Waffle House.

He saved lives,” he said.

Shaw singlehandedly wrestled the AR-15 semi-automatic rifle from the hands of Travis Reinking as he was allegedly reloading in the middle of a shooting rampage in April.

Four people were killed and two others wounded at the Waffle House restaurant in Nashville, America’s

country music capital.

But Shaw has been credited with saving many more lives. He suffered a graze wound from a bullet and burns on his right hand from grabbing the hot barrel of the gun.

He was hailed as a hero by the survivors and their family members, but has repeatedly has rejected the label, saying he acted for reasons of self-preservation.

For the second year running, Netflix hit “Stranger Things” took best show and best actor in a show for Millie Bobby Brown. Noah Schnapp picked up best frightened performance. (afp)

Toll rises to five after quake in Japan’s Osaka

The death toll in a powerful earthquake that rocked Japan’s Osaka on Monday has risen to five, with some 370 injured, officials said Tuesday, urging vigilance against landslides ahead of heavy rains.

The fifth fatality was a 66year-old man who was found dead on Tuesday under a number of books and CDs in his home, a local government spokeswoman said.

The other casualties were a nineyear-old girl who was killed when a wall collapsed at her school follow-

ing the 5.3-magnitude quake, along with two men and a woman, all in their eighties, who were trapped under a wall or furniture.

“The government will keep up efforts to rescue people,” top government spokesman Yoshihide Suga told reporters, though he added that there were no reports of

missing people.

And he said officials would do “everything we can” to quickly restore gas and running water to homes cut off after the quake.

Japan’s meteorological agency meanwhile warned that heavy rains expected in Osaka on Tuesday and Wednesday could cause landslides in the region, with the quake potentially having loosened earth.

Suga also called for residents to be on alert, saying “landslide disasters are possible in the region

that experienced strong tremors, even if rains are light.”

The weather agency said the region could see 50 millimetres of rain by Wednesday morning and up to 100 millimetres in the 24 hours after that to Thursday morning.

“Normally we don’t issue warnings with this level of rains, but after the quake it could cause landslides, floods and swelling river streams,” official Masakatsu Oya told AFP. Authorities have also

warned of the possibility of strong aftershocks in the coming week and especially in the next two to three days.
