In director Jordan Peele’s horror thriller, the Oscar-winning actress plays a woman whose family is confronted by a group of doppelgangers. She said it was “refreshing” to see a middle-class, black family on screen. “And how normal it is, is the remarkable thing,” she said. “I love it.” “I loved how unremarkable it was that they were black, because I often feel quite unremarkable, I don’t live my life always considering the colour of my skin and it was nice to have that - a family that we could project our own understanding of a family on to no matter what colour our skin is, and that the paradigms to which they were navigating this particular monster

had nothing to do with the colour of their skin. “Yeah, that’s refreshing.” The Kenyan-Mexican actress said she was shocked to learn that having a black family as the central family in the horror genre was also uncommon. “I was like, ‘wow, it’s about time’,” she said. LOS ANGELES - Female-led superhero movie “Captain Marvel” took in an estimated $69.3 million over the weekend, outearning the combined North American totals of the next nine films, industry watcher Exhibitor Relations reported Sunday. The Disney/Marvel blockbuster had a huge opening last weekend -- the biggest ever for a female-fronted superhero flick -- and, with the foreign total of $494 million added in, “is now assured of ultimately earning $1 billion,” according to the Hollywood Reporter. The film, which stars Brie Larson as a former fighter pilot who gains superpowers and finds herself embroiled in a galactic conflict, has already passed the lifetime takes of superhero adventures including “Ant-Man and the Wasp” and “Iron Man 2,” according to Variety. Far back in second spot for this three-day weekend was a new animated production from Paramount, “Wonder Park,” at $16 million. The film, set in an amusement park based on the imaginings of a young girl (Brianna Denski, whose previous work included a Lysol commercial), has far to go to make up the nearly $100 million Paramount spent to make it. Jennifer Garner, Matthew Broderick, Mila Kunis and John Oliver also provide voices. In third was another new release, CBS and Lionsgate’s teen drama “Five Feet Apart,” at $13.2 million. It stars Haley Lu Richardson and Cole Sprouse as teens who fall in love while being treated for cystic fibrosis, a disease that requires them to keep a distance from each other. Universal’s “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” took in $9.3 million for fourth place. Voiced by Jay Baruchel, America Ferrera, Cate Blanchett and F. Murray Abraham, it tells the story of young Hiccup and his dragon Toothless on their quest to find a dragon utopia. And in fifth was Lionsgate’s “A Madea Family Funeral” at $8.1 million. Police had earlier launched a huge manhunt for Gokmen Tanis, 37, issuing a picture of the suspected gunman and warning the public not to approach him following the attack, in which five other people were wounded. Mosques and schools were closed across the Netherlands’ fourth-largest city following the bloodshed, before heavily armed officers surrounded a building and arrested him. Dutch authorities said they were still investigating a likely terrorist motive for the shooting but Prime Minister Mark Rutte said they “cannot exclude” other motives, including a family dispute. “We have just heard that the suspect we are looking for has been arrested,” Utrecht police chief Rob van Bree told a dramatic press conference seconds after being handed a piece of paper with news

The city’s mayor Jan van Zanen told the same news conference it was a “black day for Utrecht”, while prosecution officer Rutger Jeuken said that “it looks like what we are dealing with is a terrorist motive”. - ‘Questions and rumours’ The drama began when gunfire broke out on a tram near the 24 Oktoberplein square, sending people fleeing from the tram and triggering a huge police response. One witness told broadcaster NOS they saw an injured woman running out of the tram with blood on her hands and clothes who then fell to the ground. “I brought her into my car and helped her. When the police arrived, she was unconscious,” the witness, who was not named, told the broadcaster.

A body covered in a white sheet could later be seen lying on the tram tracks. Police then launched a massive manhunt during which the suspected gunman is believed to have carjacked a Renault Clio before being arrested about seven hours later, around three kilometres (two miles) from the attack site. Security forces were on high alert at airports and other government buildings following the attack, which came just days after 50 people were killed at mosques in New Zealand in a rampage by an alleged white supremacist. Dutch national counter-terrorism chief Pieter-Jaap Aalbersberg said authorities had lowered the terror threat in Utrecht one notch from the top level after “the arrest of the main suspect for the shooting”. Rutte said afterwards that the Netherlands would “never give way to intolerance”. “There are many questions and rumours,” he told a news conference in The Hague. “What the mo-

Security standards increased by implementing explosive trace detection

MANGUPURA - At present, airports in the world are starting to improve security standards by implementing explosive trace detection (ETD) equipment. Early detection against explosives at airports is one of the security procedures that are absolutely necessary in a series of security checks. For this reason, Ngurah Rai Airport, one of the busiest airports in Indonesia, held an Explosive Trace Detection (ETD) and Advanced Technology Implementation training for aviation security personnel on Monday (Mar. 18). This training is in collaboration with the Australian government through the Australian Embassy to Indonesia in Jakarta, as well as the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and PT Angkasa Pura I. The training to improve the ability of conventional detection equipment to automatic and high-tech was attended by 132 participants. Airport Authority for Region IV and aviation security from the airports of Surabaya, Semarang, Jogja, Makassar, Balikpapan, Lombok and Manado. DENPASAR - In accordance with the direction of the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, starting in 2019 throughout Indonesia, including Bali, large-scale forest reclamation and rehabilitation will be carried out. The reclamation means to restore the damaged forest condition. Tree rehabilitation and planting is oriented to saving lakes, reservoirs, settlements and maintaining natural beauty while expanding employment. This was conveyed by the Regional Secretary of Bali Province, Dewa Made Indra, when reading the speech of the Indonesian Minister of Environment and Forestry in the 36th commemoration of Foresters Day 2019 at the Bali Forestry Service Office on Monday (Mar. 18). Further, he said the land reclamation and rehabilitation will be carried out in 15 watersheds (DAS), 15 lakes and upstream dam areas in 65 locations throughout Indonesia. Foresters Day commemoration is expected to be used to make reflection, explore inspiration, motivation and innovation in the field of environment and forestry. “Foresters are strong, tough and disciplined figure at work. Similarly, foresters are patriots having courage and dedication in protecting our environment and forests,” he said. When separately interviewed, the Head of the Bali Forestry Service, I Made Gunaja, said that his service had planted trees according to the program of central government on March 16 at Serangan, Denpasar. Approximately 400 neem, mahogany and rambutan trees were planted, while for rehabilitation activities in 2019 will be carried out on 750 hectares of forest spreading across the Forest Management Unit (KPH) in East Bali (Karangasem), North Bali (Buleleng), and West Bali

(Jembrana). “We strive for the future how to protect forest areas, especially land cover in the forest areas, land cover in watersheds, and land cover in springs. Moreover, the watershed is located in cross-district region,” he said. According to Gunaja, Bali has one watershed, namely the Unda Anyar watershed. For the lake, according to the plan, it will be carried out a study on the quality of water on Lake Beratan. Meanwhile, the upstream area of the dam is the Batukaru forest area whose trails flow to Lake Bulian (Buyan), Lake Tamblingan, and Lake Beratan. “That’s why we need to make sure to be protected because Bali as a small island is very risky for water supply,” he explained. Meanwhile, Gunaja continued that critical land as of 2013 spreads across almost 44,000 hectares inside and outside the forest area. For example, Penulisan area needs extra effort to green it again. Sometimes, critical lands are indeed quite heavy and difficult to be reforested. Secondly, there is indeed an appearance in the landscape image of land that is not vegetated such as in Dawan. His service had checked and wanted to plant the area, but in fact they are the lands of community deliberately left like that to produce reeds. “Another example, in Karangasem, will look open right in dry season, whereas it is productive land. When the rain arrives, people will grow lots of beans in the area. We will try to study this later, whether such lands are still including in critical category or have been excluded,” he explained. Gracie Kelly’s Irish Pub at Bali Dynasty Resort is in the midst of relocating to a more spacious street-front venue in the vibrant heart of South Kuta. This new-look restaurant facility will be launched to coincide with Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations on 17th March 2019. Externally, the new site has been inspired by a classic Irish tower complete with a distinctive steeple and large ornate windows. However, exposed red brickwork and semi-industrial elements give the building a more contemporary edge. AI and spices: Would you put cumin on a pizza? troversial territory. As someone of Kenyan-Indian heritage, I can testify that it’s rare for a South Asian family not to possess a masala dabba - a storage box used to create spice blends at home filled with staples such as turmeric, cumin, paprika and asafoetida (hing). Our own one is more than 60 years old and has travelled through several continents and generations. Spices aren’t just a flavour, they’re key to culture, heritage and history. So does AI really have a role to play here? Dr Hamed Faridi, McCormick’s chief science officer, says that deep analysis of tens of thousands of previously successful spice mixes is helping the company come up with new flavours more quickly. “A product, from the beginning to the end, can take somewhere between 50 to 150 iterations before it is ready for commercialisation,” Dr Faridi says. If all that data is shared and analysed, the company says it could cut the time it takes to come up with new flavours by 70% and reduce training time for new product developers. “It takes an experienced product developer about 10 to 15 years to become highly trained in what they do, so it makes business sense to develop a system that means every person is as good as the best person we have,” says Dr Faridi. Combining flavours is a complex business it seems. “In a kitchen [at home] you might have maybe one or two types of fresh garlic and possibly a garlic powder,” explains IBM research scientist Dr Robin Lougee. “But a product developer at Mc-

Cormick will have potentially 50 different types of garlic, all of which are different sizes, different granule sizes, have different flavour profiles. On top of that they have to consider all of the other constraints.” These constraints - usually client requirements - can include the need for recipes to be kosher or halal, free from genetically modified organisms, or low in salt, for example, as well as needing regulatory approval. The AI is also useful for suggesting similar flavours that might act as a substitute if a certain spice is hard to come by, says Dr Lougee. But sometimes the AI isn’t all that clever. “In the early days of our collaboration, a product developer was trying to make a Cajun rice dish,” she says. “We tried out our suggestion generation engine and it created a great Cajun spice mix, but it left out all the rice. “It hadn’t yet learned that you have to take into account the application, so all it had done was create a seasoned salt,” she says. Food technology historian Dr Nadia Berenstein says that in a world full of so many food and drink choices there is a “restless search for novelty” in an increasingly competitive industry. And the battleground is flavour. Neelam does admit that technology can play a part, given that spices such as green cardamom and pepper from Kerala have been hard to source recently. AI-suggested alternatives could be useful. But if you don’t have access to commercially sensitive databases produced by the largest spice company in the world, Dr Stuart Farrimond, author of The Science of Spice, has come up with a spice-based periodic table for home cooks. He believes people now want to know more about where their food has come from and how it is made. “Spices have always been in demand but there appears to have been a rise in flavour transparency because people are interested in health and also what is going into the food that they are cooking,” he says. So should traditional spice mix producers fear AI? “AI is just a tool that’s available to our generation to be able to do what humans have always done, and that’s to explore new tastes and experiences,” says Dr Lougee. WHAT do Tuscan Chicken, Bourbon Pork Tenderloin and New Orleans Sausage all have in common? They’re all new spice mix flavours that have been developed by the world’s biggest spice firm using artificial intelligence (AI). But with taste such a subjective experience, can machines really do the job better than humans? And what does this mean for cultures that see spice as a clear token of identity? Spice giant McCormick, which sells spices to consumers but also develops flavours for the food industry, says it spent four years crunching through more than 40 years of flavourrelated data, using machine learning to come up with new flavour combinations that human scientists might not have considered. After all, would you have thought of trying cumin on pizza? But some traditional spice producers are unimpressed. Neelam Verhomal runs Mohanlal Verhomal (MV) Spices in Jodhpur, northern India, along with her mother and six sisters. She laughs when she hears about the AI developments. For her, there is a real human art to creating the perfect spice blends. “My late father Mohanlal was a scientist and inventor and he actually tested each spice and its chemical composition to prepare the masala blends,” she says. “My mother would then do the taste test at home - and that made a big difference.” Her family’s mixes don’t contain preservatives or flavour enhancers and are made using traditional grinding methods, with matriarch Bhagvanti overseeing the process and giving the final sign-off. Kier is trialling a new app that provides outdoor workers with information on their exposure to air pollution.

Kier trials air pollution monitoring app LONDON - Kier is trialling a new app that provides outdoor workers with information on their exposure to air pollution. Developed by King’s College London, Canairy claims to be the world’s first such mobile app. Air pollution has been linked to up to 36,000 early deaths a year and is considered the biggest environmental risk to public health. Canairy draws on the London Air Quality Network (LAQN) pollution map at King’s College and GPS to calculate a user’s exposure to pollution on an hourly basis. Once this exposure exceeds World Health Organisation’s (WHO) limits for the concentration of nitrogen dioxide, particulates and ozone, the app notifies the user and suggests tips to reduce their exposure, including working away from traffic, reducing strenuous work or putting up a screen barrier. The app will also collect information to enable the mapping of where and to what degree exposure is happening across the capital. Employers will be able to access this anonymised exposure data relating to their workers and use it to inform how they schedule work for them to avoid the worst levels of toxic air. Mitesh Solanki, managing director for Kier Local Authority Highways, said: “At Kier, the health and wellbeing of our workforce is our number one priority and I’m really pleased that our LoHAC (London Highway Alliance) contract with TfL was the first to trial Canairy. This proactive approach to utilising the latest technology will help us reduce our people’s exposure to air pollution, which is a serious concern for all responsible employers.”

Andrew Grieve, senior air quality analyst, King’s College London, said: “As a group, outdoors workers are particularly vulnerable to longterm exposure to ambient air pollution. Within a workplace, the risk of people’s exposure to polluted air can be controlled using well-established methods, but this is more difficult for outdoor workers, many of whom work near or on busy roads. “The app gathers data from the London network, the most advanced urban air quality monitoring network in the world, which, combined with traffic data and topographical information, produces the most sophisticated model for pollution we have in the UK. “We hope that the information provided by the app can be used to inform health risk assessments and contribute to scheduling work that reduces exposure. Crucially, it can also help employers and workers to monitor their progress in avoiding unhealthy levels of pollution.” Together with the app, the British Safety Council is launching a UK-wide Time to Breathe campaign with a publicity event staged in Oxford Circus, central London, on Tuesday 12 March. KANCHANABURI - A Thai tycoon accused of poaching a black leopard was sentenced to 16 months in jail on other charges Tuesday but allowed to go free pending an appeal, in a case that has caused an outcry in a country fed up with impunity for powerful figures. Construction magnate Premchai Karnasuta, whose company is behind major infrastructure projects such as Bangkok’s monorail and its airport, was arrested by rangers in a national park in February 2018. He and three others were detained after rangers stumbled upon their campsite and found guns and animal carcasses, including a Kalij pheasant, a red muntjac -- or barking deer -- and the pelt of a black leopard. While Premchai was found not guilty of possessing a leopard carcass, he was convicted of three other poaching-related charges. The verdict, handed out in a statement to reporters waiting at Thong Pha Phum courthouse, said Premchai was “sentenced altogether to 16 months”. Two others caught with him -- his driver and cook -- received lesser sentences, while his hunting guide was sentenced to three years and five months. A court official said the tycoon was immediately released on bail of 400,000 Thai baht ($12,600) as he was not considered a flight risk. Thai courts sometimes grant bail immediately to a convicted person in the expectation they will appeal, and Premchai’s lawyer later confirmed he would challenge the verdict. Global sales of counterfeit and pirated goods have soared to 460 billion euros ($522 billion) a year, amounting to a whopping 3.3 percent of world trade, according to a report published Monday. The latest assessement by the EU Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and the OECD found the share of counterfeit goods had seen a “considerable” rise since its previous 2016 estimate of 2.5 percent

of global trade. Such goods represented 121 billion euros worth of imports into the European Union alone -- a massive 6.8 percent of total imports into the bloc, up from five percent in 2016, EUIPO said in a statement. “Counterfeiting and piracy pose a major threat to innovation and economic growth, at both EU and global level,” EUIPO execu-

The battle to bring antivenoms to Africa

WATAMU - Snake antivenoms have been around for 125 years, are effective and can be produced cheaply at scale. Yet Africa, with its abundance of deadly snakes, has an alarming shortage of the life-saving medicine. Experts and campaigners blame a combination of weak production capacity, feeble policy and oversight, high prices and a general lack of concern for the plight of people in poor, remote areas of the world. - Complex process -

The method of antivenom production has changed very little since it was first developed by French immunologist Albert Calmette in the late 19th century. It remains a painstaking, timeconsuming process, although researchers are working to develop synthetic alternatives. First, a technician has to milk a snake’s venom in a dangerous manoeuvre that sees it holding the animal’s head still while it bites a cup covered in plastic film, releasing its poison -- a small amount each time -- into the container. Small venom doses are then injected into a large domestic animal, usually a horse, to trigger an immune response and the production of toxin-attacking antibodies. After several doses over a period of about a year, the horse produces so many antibodies that it becomes immune to the venom, at which point blood can be taken from the animal. In a lab, antibodies are then separated from the blood, to be given to snakebite victims -- who may need several doses. An antivenom usually works only for a specific species, or small group of species of snake. A key challenge, especially in

poor, remote areas of the world where most snakebites occur, is that most antivenoms need to be refrigerated. - A ‘shameful failure’ -

Already patchy, availability of antivenoms in Africa was thrown into disarray when French laboratory SANOFI stopped production in 2014 of its FAV-Afrique drug, which was effective against a number of species, including some of the most dangerous on the continent. The last available doses expired mid-2016. SANOFI was moved mainly by financial considerations. The prohibitive price of a single dose -- more than $100 -- rendered sales in Africa unprofitable. The failure to use antivenom “to save tens of millions of lives... is a shameful failure. Nowhere in the world is this more confronting than in Africa,” says the Global Snakebite Initiative, adding in a report on its website that the “collapse of the snake antivenom market in Africa” was a “medical tragedy”. The cause is multifold. In a vicious circle, unaffordability leads to lower demand and falling sales, which result in reduced production, higher costs, and raised prices for consumers. Africa alone sees about half a million snakebites that need treatment every year, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). “Governments and the international community therefore should really pick that up... What I would like to see over the next five to 10 years, maybe even 15 years, is for an antivenom to be produced for each area of the world that has a problem and that antivenom should be provided to those people free of charge,” Royjan said. The WHO has launched a massive review of the availability, efficacy and safety of snakebite serum available in Africa, where the majority of countries have no effective or affordable antivenom at all. ‘Hold the compass or die’: jailed migrants recount ordeal

TRAPANI - Gambian Cherno Jallow, Senegalese Cheikhaya Dieng, and Ivorian Fofana Lamine, are finishing 44-month jail sentences in Italy after people smugglers forced them to navigate boats across the Mediterranean. Shortly before they were due to be released, the three men told AFP about their ordeals from their prison in Trapani, Sicily. All three left their respective countries in 2015 in search of work, and all three hoped to find it in Libya. But once there, 22-year-old Jallow was kidnapped and his family forced to pay a ransom. The chaos and threats to their safety meanwhile pushed Dieng, 22, and Lamine, 25, to contact people smugglers to try to reach Italy. “On the day of my departure, they gave me a compass and told me: ‘Someone will steer the boat and you will hold the compass.’” said Lamine. “Me, I said I don’t have any experience. But they have weapons! I didn’t use the compass. ‘Clear similarities’ between Boeing crashes in Ethiopia, Indonesia

Flight recorder data recovered from the wreckage of Boeing 737 MAX planes that crashed in Ethiopia and Indonesia shows “clear similarities,” Addis Ababa said Sunday as the US maker announced it was finalizing a software update for its under fire anti-stall system. Pressure was mounting meanwhile on the US Federal Aviation Administration, which insisted it had followed standard procedures in certifying the plane model, even as it was reported to have come under investigation by the Department of Transport. “The 737 MAX certification program followed the FAA’s standard certification process,” the agency said in an email to AFP. It said its procedures were “well established and have consistently produced safe aircraft designs.” But reported similarities between the March 10 crash of an Ethiopian Airlines 737 Max 8, killing all 157 on board, and the Lion Air crash in October of the same model of plane in Indonesia, leaving 189 dead, have raised serious doubts and triggered Boeing’s biggest crisis in decades. On Sunday, the agency defended its practice, insisting that the 737 MAX had to pass multiple tests and reviews before being authorized to fly. It said the aircraft’s design was minutely examined, ground and flight tests were conducted, and other civil aviation authorities were

consulted to ensure the “airplane complies with FAA standards.” A statement provided by Boeing to The Seattle Times said that “the FAA considered the final configuration and operating parameters of MCAS during MAX certification, and concluded that it met all certification and regulatory requirements.” It said, without elaborating, that there had been “some significant mischaracterizations” of the certification process. Peter DeFazio, chairman of the House of Representatives’ transportation and infrastructure committee, is planning to launch an investigation into the 737 MAX’s certification, congressional sources said. Michel Merluzeau, an analyst at AirInsight, urged a cautious process. “There may be a need to re-examine what works and what does not work (in the certification process) -- but it should not be done emotionally,” Merluzeau said. LOS ANGELES - The San Antonio Spurs rolled to their season-best ninth straight win by toppling the two-time defending champion Golden State Warriors with a 111-105 victory on Monday. DeMar DeRozan scored 26 points and LaMarcus Aldridge finished with 23 points and 13 rebounds as the NBA’s hottest team guaranteed themselves a league record 22nd straight winning season. The Spurs won their 11th consecutive home game and improved to 42-29 on the season. “We worked very hard. They are the defending NBA champs and they move and cut better than anybody in the world. The effort was there for 48 minutes and we learned a lot,” said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich. Rudy Gay added 17 points for the Spurs, while Derrick White and Patty Mills hit for 12 and 10 points. SAITAMA - Japan’s “Ice Prince” Yuzuru Hanyu declared “mission complete” Tuesday in his race to be fit for the world figure skating championships, while admitting his injured ankle was still not 100 percent. The 24-year-old, who retained his Olympic title in Pyeongchang last year after similar injury fears, likened his latest spell on the sidelines to being imprisoned and vowed to skate through the pain barrier in Saitama this week. “Not being able to skate is so tough,” said Hanyu, who is recovering from strained ankle ligaments, a problem that kept him out of December’s national championships. “It was like being locked in a small room while you’re just burning with desire to compete. I can’t honestly puff out my chest and say my ankle is 100 percent,” added the two-time Olympic champion after a 45-minute workout. “But how fit I am is hard to quantify. I’m 100 percent of where I could realistically hope to be. “I had a similar experience before the Olympics and winning gold there gave me enormous confidence in my ability to skate under pressure,” added Hanyu, who required painkilling injections to skate in Pyeongchang. “I’ve slowly been building intensity and stamina and the amount of stress I can put on my

Germany coach Joachim Loew hopes to prove his critics wrong and open 2019 with a win when his new-look team host Serbia in a friendly in Wolfsburg on Wednesday.
