LOS ANGELES — Gina Rodriguez imagined a Hollywood-style awards show that recognized young women for realizing their dreams in science, public policy and community service, so the actress followed her own dream and made it happen. The “Jane the Virgin” star is producer and host of the inaugural Marie Claire Young Women’s Honors , airing Monday as a special on the CW at 9 p.m. ET. The show has all the trappings of a typical Hollywood awards ceremony — a glitzy dinner with celebrity presenters such as Katie Holmes and Hailee Steinfeld — except the honorees are female achievers outside the entertainment industry, like entrepreneur-inventor Jessica Matthews and political activist Amanda Nguyen. “I’ve always wanted to do work to uplift women, to put women in the forefront of the media and to really glorify other aspects of our society that aren’t just fame driven,” Rodriguez said in a recent interview. “There are a lot of wonderful things that a woman can do
and is capable of that we don’t see that often in the media and pop culture. ... And it would be great to start streaming stuff like Young Women’s Honors through the same apparatus that says you should have lip injections.” The show, taped last month at the Marina del Rey Marriott in Los Angeles, also spotlights Olympic gymnast Simone Biles, Paralympian Tatyana McFadden and Fereshteh Forough , who is providing income possibilities to women in Afghanistan by teaching them computer coding skills. Young Women’s Honors is the first project for Rodriguez’s year-old production company, I Can and I Will Productions. SEOUL — The jailed confidante of disgraced South Korean President Park Geun-hye begins a trial Monday that will explore a scandal that led to Park’s impeachment after millions took to the streets in protest. The trial of Choi Soon-sil, Park’s friend of 40 years, is the biggest since the 2014 trial of the crew of a ferry that sank and killed more than 300 people, mostly teenagers. Ten others swept up in the scandal also face trial. Speculation about Choi dominated local news every day for months, but she is still a mystery. She last appeared in public on Oct. 31, when, after losing a Prada shoe in a crush of media and protesters, she told reporters at the Seoul prosecutors’ office that she had “committed a sin that deserves death.” THE TRIAL Monday’s hearing at the Seoul Central District Court will review the charges against Choi, who pros-
ecutors say manipulated state affairs and extorted businesses. It will also set the trial schedule. Choi is not required to attend this session. The trial is open to the public. Worried about a crush of spectators, the court last week raffled admission tickets. It’s not clear how long the trial will last. Courts normally issue a verdict within six months of indictment, so she’ll likely get a verdict by May if prosecutors don’t bring new charges. Choi is charged with abuse of
power, extortion and attempted fraud. If convicted on all charges, she could receive up to 15 years in prison, according to court spokesman Shin Jae-hwan. Before her arrest, Choi said she that received some of Park’s speeches in advance but that she didn’t know if they included confidential information. She denied the other allegations. Prosecutors allege that Choi helped pressure 16 companies to donate a total of 77.4 billion won ($65.6 million) to create two nonprofit foundations, Mir and K-Sports. According to the prosecution, Park first brought up the idea of launching the foundations and ordered her senior secretary for policy coordination at the time, Ahn Jongbeom, to ask companies to finance their establishment while letting
Choi handle the appointment of foundation officials. Choi allegedly used a top Chinese official’s visit to Seoul to propose pressuring firms to donate quickly to Mir. Choi has been charged with pressuring Hyundai Motors and the KT telecommunication firm to sign $6 million and $5.7 million worth of ad contracts, respectively, with Playground, an ad agency she ran. She was also charged with pushing Hyundai to buy $930,450 worth of car components from a company owned by an acquaintance.

The two women became friends in the 1970s, around the time when Park Geun-hye began serving as first lady after her mother was killed during a failed 1974 assassination attempt on Park Chunghee. Park Geun-hye once headed a patriotic group set up by the elder Choi, while Choi Soon-sil served as head of its college unit. BWS Bali-Penida asked to study installation of gabion wall
SINGARAJA - Installation of gabion wall on the beaches in Buleleng was addressed by Commission III of the Bali House of Representatives. It made site inspection to the installation of gabion wall by the management of The Lovina, Friday (Dec. 16). The Commission ordered the Bali-Penida river agency (BWS) to conduct a study of the installation of coastal protection. If coastal protection causes damages (abrasion—Ed), the parliament requested the relevant agency to dismantle the coastal protection installed by the hotel or residents. Site inspection of the parliament was led by Secretary of Commission III, Ketut Kariyasa Adnyana, accompanied by his members and a legislator of Buleleng, Gusti Made Artana. The entourage was also accompanied by the Head of the BWS Bali-Penida working unit, Putu Edi. The first location visited was the installation of gabion wall by the management of The Lovina. At this location, the entourage had a close look at the construction of coastal protection installed by the hotel. Additionally, the parliament directly met the representatives of
hotel management to ask for the explanation. In essence, the gabion wall is installed to prevent damage due to scour of the beach. Although it has a good intention, the hotel management is reminded to comply with the regulations in doing coastal construction. In addition, a study of the environmental impact must be carried out, so that the intention to prevent erosion will even cause damages to the surrounding areas. Secretary of Commission III, Kariyasa Adnyana, said that coastal damage in Buleleng mainly in the tourist area of Lovina is quite alarming. People living near the beach or the hotel should install coastal protection. Such an effort seems to protect the environment in one-sided manner. The area around the coastal protection such as in the north of The Lovina and area of Tukadmungga turns damaged. “We are coming down because of people’s complaints. One of them is related to the installation of gabion wall at Lovina. If we observe, the coastal protection is indeed carried out in one-sided manner, but it even harms the area and others,” he said.
According to this PDI-Struggle politician from Busungbiu village, for the time being residents or the hotels wishing to install coastal protection are expected to pay attention to environmental impact and comply with the regulation. The government has regulated the development at seashore so as to follow the rules on the coastal border, building permit (IMB) and statement of environmental management (SPPL). In addition, the parliament requested the BWS Bali-Penida to conduct a study related to the rise of coastal protection installation. If the installation of coastal protection causes damages to the surrounding beaches, relevant agency is asked to take firm action and dismantle the coastal protection installed. “We do not want this coastal protection only rescues particular area unilaterally, while the surrounding areas become the victims. To that end, we ask to postpone the installation elsewhere. Also we ask the BWS to examine this and if it indeed causes damage we will ask the relevant agency to dismantle,” he explained.
In the meantime, the chief of the BWS Bali-Penida working unit Putu Edi said that the installation of coastal protection as found at Lovina is indeed appropriate to prevent abrasion. However, he has not dared to ascertain whether the installation of coastal protection will trigger worse abrasion or not. Handling of critical lands runs slowly
MANGUPURA - Handling of critical land in Bali can be said to be running slow. Data of the Bali Forestry Agency indicate that critical lands in Bali in 2013 reached 44,669.78 hectares. So far, it could have been handled about 12,000 hectares. Such handling has been underway since 2010. Most critical lands are located outside the forest area reaching 26,346.10 hectares. “Since 2010, approximately 12,000 hectares of critical lands have been dealt with, but we do not carry in terms of area as a whole,” said the Division Head of Land Rehabilitation and Social Forestry, the Bali Forestry Agency, I Ketut Subawa, in the “Journalist Workshop on Covering Climate Change” posing a cooperation of Dr. Soetomo Press Institute and the Embassy of Norway in Kuta,
Badung, Wednesday (Dec. 14). Subawa reasoned that shortage of funds is the cause of slow handling to critical land considering the handling in the forest area is done through reforestation, forest management and security. Then, outside the region is implemented through community participation by providing free seedlings. One hectare of land is only budgeted as much as IDR 3 million for
seedlings and planting. Besides, the success of planting done is not comparable to the process of land degradation occurred. “We annually carry out reforestation and planting activities. The success is uncertain. For instance, if we now plant 25 hectares of critical land and the area of critical land will immediately reduce 25 hectares, it’s unlike that. If we plant in rainy season, the possibility to grow will be bigger. On the contrary, when planting in dry season, it has smaller percentage to grow,” he explained. In 2016, added Subawa, the Forestry Agency targeted to plant 1 million trees outside forest areas
and they mostly belong to critical area. If per hectare land of community needs 400 trees, the critical land rehabilitated is only about 250 hectares. Actually, the conservation of land outside the forest area is needed to cover up the shortage of forest area in Bali which only amounts to 22 percent. “Ideally, the forest area is 30 percent. To achieve the forest acreage up to 30 percent of the forest area is impossible. That’s why the conservation efforts for the fulfillment of oxygen in the framework of environmental balance are attempted outside the region,” he explained. Subawa added that in line with
planting efforts, people having the land are also given counseling. Hopefully, they will not just use the land for economic purposes but also participate in conservation effort. In this case, it is intended for long-lived plants and is not intended for harvest or exploitation mainly in the sloping areas prone to erosion. “For example, in the planting of albizia, we indeed provide the assistance of seedlings for the community. If it has been delivered to the communities, they then have the right to harvest it. But in a series of preservation, we still have to give extension so that it will not be cut entirely,” he concluded. (kmb32)

Japanese Encephalitis attacks Klungkung, 22 suspects, three people tested positive
SEMARAPURA - Japanese encephalitis or JE virus was first known to spread to Klungkung in 2015. In 2016, the number of case increased to 22 suspects and three children were tested positive. The virus derived from pigs and transmitted by Culex mosquito attacks the brains of patients so that it can have an impact on the intellectual and causes paralysis. According to the data owned by the Klungkung Health Agency, the number of JE virus case was first found on February 8, 2015.
The officers also took samples and did laboratory tests with positive results. In 2015, there were totally 11 suspects of JE virus cases. Furthermore, in 2016 the JE suspect increased to 22 cases and three of them were tested positive. According to the Head of the Klungkung Health Agency, Ni Made Adi Swapatni, accompanied by surveillance staff Putu Gede Semaratika said that the results of surveillance by the health officer indicated there are people infected with JE virus. The officers also
took blood samples and examined in the laboratory. After that, three people were tested positive. “The transmission of this virus is through Culex mosquitoes exposed through pigs. However, in the cases at Bungbungan there are no pigs in the area,” she said when met on Wednesday (Dec. 14). Of the 22 suspect cases of JE virus, the most occurred in Banjarangkan subdistrict with a total of six cases. However, the most severe case occurred in Nusa Penida subdistrict, precisely at Sukun hamlet,
Batukandik on April 2, 2016. As a result of being infected with JE virus, a 10-year-old child named Ni Kadek Feby Ulandari was experiencing stiffness in the muscles. Disorders of motor nerves causing paralysis or stiffness in muscles have indeed become one of the effects of the JE virus. If the virus is not handled properly and lasts for a long time it is likely to result in mental disorders such as emotional instability, speaking slowly, personality changes and paralyzed in several parts of the body. “Treat-
ment of muscular rigidity is carried out with physiotherapy,” she added. With increasing cases of JE virus, people are asked to be vigilant, especially those living in a neighborhood that has a pigsty. In most cases, this virus attacks children whose surrounding environment has pigsty. “In addition to fogging, we also cooperate with the closest animal health centers to inspect pigs around the settlement where JE virus suspect is known to occur,” she concluded. This was submitted by a legislator of Karangasem, Nengah Suparta, a few days ago in a commission joint meeting with the executive in the Karangasem House of Representatives. Until now, said Suparta, this former hamlet chief of Samuh, the mugging culprit has never been revealed. According to him, the dark road along about 600 meters without street lighting is quite hazardous. There are many hotels on the right and left side of the road. I think the budget of IDR 50 million is enough to flash on the road section,” he said. In the meantime, Chairman of the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) of Karangasem, Wayan Tama, when met at separate location admitted there was ever a traveler mugged on the road leading to Puri Bagus. He said the road to the east is dark at night. According to this man from Nyuh Tebel the road section indeed needs
to be installed with street lighting. He added that the road section from the T- junction of Candidasa to Nyuh Tebel and Tenganan remains dark. He wanted the installation of five street lightings along the path. “Hotel and restaurant tax can be allocated for the procurement and installation of the street lighting. Provision of tourism supporting facilities or infrastructure is necessary,” said Tama who is also a legislator of Karangasem. The Head of the Karangasem Transportation Agency and Fire Brigade, Wayan Sutapa, said that his office will review and make an action plan. He added that formerly there were many requests for street lighting for the east of Candidasa but they could not be entirely realized as the budget of IDR 1.7 billion is not enough. All this time, the request for the installation of street lighting is on the rise because many parties are asking, while the budget is limited. Atuh Beach in Nusa Penida Offers Exoticism of Sea and Hill View For those who like outbound activities, Atuh Beach is great option as a destination. To the west of the Atuh Temple there are two springs, one of which is considred sacred and is only used for ceremonial purposes. The other spring is used by surrounding communities for various purposes. According to local stories, the two springs emmerged during the dry season. A dove was seen drinking under a coconut tree and upon further investigation, the springs were found. Thus, local residents named the beach ‘Atuh Beach.’ In Balinese, the word /atuh/ is derived from two stems namely ‘a’ (not) and ‘tuh’ (dry) so the . word /atuh/ is interpreted to mean ‘never dry out.’ To get to Atuh Beach, from mainland Bali, visitors must first reach Nusa Penida by boat from Matahari Terbit pier in Sanur (Denpasar) or from Sampalan pier in Klungkung. BUSINESS British companies absorb Brexit shock, get on with business for 2017
LONDON - Richard Bunce says he felt sick when voters decided to take Britain out of the European Union in June, forcing him into a emergency review of his firm’s expansion plans. But six months on, orders are strong and a new growth plan is in place, according to Bunce, managing director of Mec Com Ltd which sells devices to protect against power surges to clients such as Siemens and Alstom.
Far from the “profound and immediate economic shock” predicted by Britain’s finance ministry in the event of a vote for Brexit, the economy has, so far, barely slowed. Bunce expects tougher times. But like many other executives trying to push their Brexit worries to one side, he invested - nearly half a million pounds on a new laser-cutting machine over the summer. Now he plans to spend another 750,000 pounds ($932,000) on robotic metal-working equipment at Mec Com’s plant near Stafford, a town 135 miles (217 km) northwest of London, after landing a big contract with a British food processing firm. “We believe that the opportunities we have got will, one way or another, find a way around Brexit,” Bunce said. To be sure, what Brexit means is far from clear. Britain is due to begin its two-year divorce process with the EU early next year. Agreeing its new relationship could take a lot longer. Bunce is taking precautions in case his firm ends up facing tariffs on its exports to the EU. He recently travelled to Romania to discuss the possibility of expanding his company’s existing unit there in the event of a “hard” Brexit. “If that happens then we would need to find a way to switch very quickly, but as things stand we are planning for more UK business,” he said. investors who have pushed down the value of the pound by 13 percent since June or the country’s consumers who have carried on spending. Gertjan Vlieghe, one of the BoE’s interest-rate setters, said he believed Britain was set for a “slow-motion” slowdown. But the drag could be softer if there is progress towards a good Brexit deal for Britain, which would push up the value of sterling and ease the inflation hit, he said last month. Sterling’s rise over the past month could also soften the rise of inflation. Looking further ahead, the impact of Brexit is harder to quantify without no clarity on what it might mean for exports, investment and migration in coming decades. “You can easily see what the negatives are but they are in the medium term rather than the immediate one or two-year timeframe,”

Yearender - Indonesia successfully fights forest fires in 2016
JAKARTA - Many inhabitants of Riau Province have a fleeting sense of relief since, for the first time in the past 18 years, they were not choked by haze coming from forest and plantation fires, thanks to all out efforts by Indonesian authorities to put out the fires.
Indonesia remained haze-free in 2016, after two decades of experiencing annual forest fires that had triggered haze, Environmental Affairs and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya has confirmed. “For the first time, in 2016, we did not experience major forest fires thanks to the joint hard work of many in the regions. The number of hotspots decreased by 80 to 92 percent, according to the NOAA and Terra satellite methods,” the minister said on Dec 10, 2016. The number of hotspots, from January 1 to December 9, 2016, reached 3,844, a significant drop from 21,847 during the same period in the previous year. In Riau, the Sumatran province worst hit by haze, there were 1,924 hotspots last year, and this year, there are only 371. In Central Kalimantan, the number of hotspots dropped from 4,283 last year, to 257 this year. Based on data from the TERRA and AQUA Satellites from NASA, during this same period the number of hotspots significantly decreased from 70,252 last year, to 3,814 this year. China to return seized U.S. drone, says Washington ‘hyping up’ incident
BEIJING - China will return an underwater U.S. drone seized by a naval vessel this week in the South China Sea, both countries said on Saturday, but Beijing complained that Washington had been “hyping up” the incident. U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, who has vowed to take an aggressive approach in dealing with China over its economic and military policies, jumped on the unusual drone seizure with a pair of provocative tweets, accusing Beijing of stealing the equipment. The drone, known as an unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV), was taken on Thursday, the first seizure of its kind in recent memory. The Pentagon went public with its complaint after the action and said on Saturday it had secured a deal

Polish opposition keeps blocking parliament in standoff with government
WARSAW - Polish opposition leaders said on Saturday they would maintain their blockade of parliament’s main hall and called for popular protests against a government that has accused it of trying to seize power. Poland’s biggest political standoff in years began on Friday when opposition lawmakers objected to plans by the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party to curb media access to parliament, and blocked the plenary hall podium ahead of a budget vote. About two dozen members of the Civic Platform (PO) party have taken turns to occupy the podium and the party’s leader said they would remain there for the next few days. PiS lawmakers moved voting to another area without media access, prompting accusations they had passed the 2017 budget illegally, breaching the constitution. Prime Minister Beata Szydlo said the protest was just whining by parties that lost an election in 2015 after eight years in government. But striking a more conciliatory tone, PiS leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski moved to organise a meeting between the speaker of the upper house of parliament and the media late on Saturday night to discuss the new plan for journalists’ access. Fifty-one-year-old Hopkins bows out with knockout loss
LOS ANGELES - Former world champion Bernard Hopkins’ long and illustrious career ended in a brutal defeat when the 51-year-old light heavyweight was knocked out of the ring in the eighth round of his final fight in Los Angeles on Saturday. A month short of his 52nd birthday, Hopkins lost by technical knockout to fellow American Joe Smith Jr at the iconic Forum when he failed to return to the ring within 20 seconds of being punched through the ropes. LONDON - Michael Schumacher’s family have launched an initiative to help others inspired by the seven-times Formula One world champion’s career and character to ‘keep fighting’ in the face of adversity. “We would like to encourage others to never give up,” the stricken German racer’s wife Corinna said in a statement presenting the not-forprofit movement on Saturday. December 29 will be the anniversary of a 2013 skiing accident in which the former Ferrari driver suffered severe head injuries when he fell and hit his head on a rock in the French Alps. Schumacher, the most successful F1 driver of all time with 91 wins, turns 48 in January. He has been
treated at home in Switzerland since he was released from hospital in September 2014. His son Mick, who was with him at the time of his accident, is now embarking on his own career in motor racing and is working through the junior series. Few details about the champion’s condition have been made public and manager Sabine Kehm said that silence would be maintained. “Michael’s health is not a public issue, and so we will continue to make no comment in that regard. This is also because we have to protect his intimate sphere,” she said in a statement. “Michael has always been very protective of his privacy, even during the most successful times
of his career. LONDON - Jose Mourinho’s admiration for Manchester United’s summer recruit Zlatan Ibrahimovic soared to new heights on Saturday as he cooed about the Swede’s “superman” mentality following his latest match-winning tour de force at West Bromwich Albion. In the week, Mourinho had described Ibrahimovic as “undroppable” and he was delighted to be given another shining illustration of just why as the 35-year-old scored both goals in the 2-0 Premier League win at the Hawthorns. Ibrahimovic had told BT Sport before the match that he felt as sprightly as a 20-year-old and within five minutes of taking the pitch he appeared as good as his word, heading United into the lead with his ninth goal in his last nine games. In the second half, to calm fans’ jitters that United could let another fragile lead slip, he wriggled his way between two defenders and
struck a deflected shot into the corner for his 16th goal of the season, 11 more than any of his team mates. Having taken his league total to 11 goals, he now has a strike rate in his first 16 matches for the club that has been bettered for United in the Premier League era only by Ruud van Nistelrooy, who netted 12 in his first flush. Mourinho has been in awe of Ibrahimovic’s commitment all season but, especially with his other marksmen seeming so profligate, he is happy that the Swede is reaping the rewards that reflect the quality of his performances.

Fifty-one-year-old Hopkins bows out with knockout loss
LOS ANGELES - Former world champion Bernard Hopkins’ long and illustrious career ended in a brutal defeat when the 51-year-old light heavyweight was knocked out of the ring in the eighth round of his final fight in Los Angeles on Saturday. A month short of his 52nd birthday, Hopkins lost by technical knockout to fellow American Joe Smith Jr at the iconic Forum when he failed to return to the ring within 20 seconds of being punched through the ropes. Hopkins had not fought since a crushing loss to Russian Sergey Kovalev two years ago and his first ever defeat inside the distance looked increasingly likely as the bout progressed against a man ranked second by the World Boxing Council. Already ahead on points on two of the judges’ scorecards, Smith ended the fight when he delivered a series of devastating blows to Hopkins’ head, culminating with a left hook that sent the veteran between the ropes and onto the Forum floor. Hopkins appeared to land on his head but remained conscious and was helped to his feet but could not make his way back into the ring within the 20-second time limit. Despite the brutality of his defeat to the former construction worker from New York, Hopkins said he was still in with a chance until he was sent into the crowd.

LONDON - Michael Schumacher’s family have launched an initiative to help others inspired by the seven-times Formula One world champion’s career and character to ‘keep fighting’ in the face of adversity. “We would like to encourage others to never give up,” the stricken German racer’s wife Corinna said in a statement presenting the not-forprofit movement on Saturday. December 29 will be the anniversary of a 2013 skiing accident in which the former Ferrari driver suffered severe head injuries when he fell and hit his head on a rock in the French Alps. treated at home in Switzerland since he was released from hospital in September 2014. His son Mick, who was with him at the time of his accident, is now embarking on his own career in motor racing and is working through the junior series. Few details about the champion’s condition have been made public and manager Sabine Kehm said that silence would be maintained. “Michael’s health is not a public issue, and so we will continue to make no comment in that regard. China to return seized U.S. drone, says Washington ‘hyping up’ incident
BEIJING - China will return an underwater U.S. drone seized by a naval vessel this week in the South China Sea, both countries said on Saturday, but Beijing complained that Washington had been “hyping up” the incident. U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, who has vowed to take an aggressive approach in dealing with China over its economic and military policies, jumped on the unusual drone seizure with a pair of provocative tweets, accusing Beijing of stealing the equipment. The drone, known as an unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV), was taken on Thursday, the first seizure of its kind in recent memory. The Pentagon went public with its complaint after the action and said on Saturday it had secured a deal
to get the drone back. “Through direct engagement with Chinese authorities, we have secured an understanding that the Chinese will return the UUV to the United States,” Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said in a statement. Polish opposition keeps blocking parliament in standoff with government
WARSAW - Polish opposition leaders said on Saturday they would maintain their blockade of parliament’s main hall and called for popular protests against a government that has accused it of trying to seize power. Poland’s biggest political standoff in years began on Friday when opposition lawmakers objected to plans by the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party to curb media access to parliament, and blocked the plenary hall podium ahead of a budget vote. About two dozen members of the Civic Platform (PO) party have taken turns to occupy the podium and the party’s leader said they would remain there for the next few days. PiS lawmakers moved voting to another area without media access, prompting accusations they had passed the 2017 budget illegally, breaching the constitution. Prime Minister Beata Szydlo said the protest was just whining by parties that lost an election in 2015 after eight years in government. But striking a more conciliatory tone, PiS leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski moved to organise a meeting between the speaker of the upper house of parliament and the media late on Saturday night to discuss the new plan for journalists’ access. BUSINESS British companies absorb Brexit shock, get on with business for 2017
LONDON - Richard Bunce says he felt sick when voters decided to take Britain out of the European Union in June, forcing him into a emergency review of his firm’s expansion plans. But six months on, orders are strong and a new growth plan is in place, according to Bunce, managing director of Mec Com Ltd which sells devices to protect against power surges to clients such as Siemens and Alstom.
Far from the “profound and immediate economic shock” predicted by Britain’s finance ministry in the event of a vote for Brexit, the economy has, so far, barely slowed. Bunce expects tougher times. But like many other executives trying to push their Brexit worries to one side, he invested - nearly half a million pounds on a new laser-cutting machine over the summer. Now he plans to spend another 750,000 pounds ($932,000) on robotic metal-working equipment at Mec Com’s plant near Stafford, a town 135 miles (217 km) northwest of London, after landing a big contract with a British food processing firm. “We believe that the opportunities we have got will, one way or another, find a way around Brexit,” Bunce said. To be sure, what Brexit means is far from clear. Britain is due to begin its two-year divorce process with the EU early next year. Agreeing its new relationship could take a lot longer. Bunce is taking precautions in case his firm ends up facing tariffs on its exports to the EU. He recently travelled to Romania to discuss the possibility of expanding his company’s existing unit there in the event of a “hard” Brexit. “If that happens then we would need to find a way to switch very quickly, but as things stand we are planning for more UK business,” he said. INVESTMENTS PLANNED Many other companies seem to be taking a similar approach, including technology giants Facebook and Google which have announced plans to create jobs in Britain in recent weeks. He said supermarkets and other retailers would probably absorb much of the inflationary hit caused by the fall in the value of the pound, rather than pass it on to customers. LONG-TERM UNCERTAINTY For now the BoE - which is helping the economy with its massive stimulus programme - is waiting to see who is right: the pessimistic
investors who have pushed down the value of the pound by 13 percent since June or the country’s consumers who have carried on spending. Gertjan Vlieghe, one of the BoE’s interest-rate setters, said he believed Britain was set for a “slow-motion” slowdown. But the drag could be softer if there is progress towards a good Brexit deal for Britain, which would push up the value of sterling and ease the inflation hit, he said last month. Sterling’s rise over the past month could also soften the rise of inflation. Looking further ahead, the impact of Brexit is harder to quantify without no clarity on what it might mean for exports, investment and migration in coming decades. “You can easily see what the negatives are but they are in the medium term rather than the immediate one or two-year timeframe,”

Yearender - Indonesia successfully fights forest fires in 2016
JAKARTA - Many inhabitants of Riau Province have a fleeting sense of relief since, for the first time in the past 18 years, they were not choked by haze coming from forest and plantation fires, thanks to all out efforts by Indonesian authorities to put out the fires.
Indonesia remained haze-free in 2016, after two decades of experiencing annual forest fires that had triggered haze, Environmental Affairs and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya has confirmed. “For the first time, in 2016, we did not experience major forest fires thanks to the joint hard work of many in the regions. The number of hotspots decreased by 80 to 92 percent, according to the NOAA and Terra satellite methods,” the minister said on Dec 10, 2016. The number of hotspots, from January 1 to December 9, 2016, reached 3,844, a significant drop from 21,847 during the same period in the previous year. In Riau, the Sumatran province worst hit by haze, there were 1,924 hotspots last year, and this year, there are only 371. In Central Kalimantan, the number of hotspots dropped from 4,283 last year, to 257 this year. Based on data from the TERRA and AQUA Satellites from NASA, during this same period the number of hotspots significantly decreased from 70,252 last year, to 3,814 this year. Eastward road of Samuh has no street lighting
Dark, German tourist ever mugged
AMLAPURA — The eastward road of Samuh hamlet, Candidasa tourist attraction, Karangasem, exactly leading to Puri Bagus Candidasa hotel stays dark because there is no street lighting. As a result, a German female traveler was once mugged and found bleeding and unconscious on the roadside. This was submitted by a legislator of Karangasem, Nengah Suparta, a few days ago in a commission joint meeting with the executive in the Karangasem House of Representatives. Until now, said Suparta, this former hamlet chief of Samuh, the mugging culprit has never been revealed. According to him, the dark road along about 600 meters without street lighting is quite hazardous. Moreover, there are many passing travelers on the road section heading for the white sandy beach in the eastern part of the Candidasa attraction at night wishing to enjoy the atmosphere at Candidasa. “The Karangasem Transportation Agency needs to allocate the installation of street lighting on the road leading to hotel area of Puri Bagus. There are many hotels on the right and left side of the road. I think the budget of IDR 50 million is enough to flash on the road section,” he said. In the meantime, Chairman of the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) of Karangasem, Wayan Tama, when met at separate location admitted there was ever a traveler mugged on the road leading to Puri Bagus. He said the road to the east is dark at night. According to this man from Nyuh Tebel the road section indeed needs
to be installed with street lighting. He added that the road section from the T- junction of Candidasa to Nyuh Tebel and Tenganan remains dark. He wanted the installation of five street lightings along the path. “Hotel and restaurant tax can be allocated for the procurement and installation of the street lighting. Provision of tourism supporting facilities or infrastructure is necessary,” said Tama who is also a legislator of Karangasem. The Head of the Karangasem Transportation Agency and Fire Brigade, Wayan Sutapa, said that his office will review and make an action plan. He added that formerly there were many requests for street lighting for the east of Candidasa but they could not be entirely realized as the budget of IDR 1.7 billion is not enough. All this time, the request for the installation of street lighting is on the rise because many parties are asking, while the budget is limited. Other than provision of poles and lighting, the budget to pay taxes and electricity bills in Karangasem is also quite large. (013)

Atuh Beach in Nusa Penida Offers Exoticism of Sea and Hill View For those who like outbound activities, Atuh Beach is great option as a destination. This tourist attractino is located in Pelilit hamlet, Pejukutan, Nusa Penida, Klungkung. Atuh Beach has been well known as a great destination since the 2010s and even more so since the Nusa Penida Festival staretd. Visitors coem here to enjoy the exotic coastal scenery and there tend to be more tourists on holidays. The splendor of the scenery at this beach is flanked by cliffs and the clear water allows for a great view of the marien biota such as coral reef -especially during low tide. There are rocks that protude from the white sand and near Batu Abah island there are lots of sunfish. There are also four coral islands off the coast from Atuh Beach, they are: Batu Melawang / Pepadasan, Batu Abah, Batu Paon, and Bukit Jineng Island. Melawang Island or Pepadasan Island is the largest rock island in the cluster. Locals also often call this island ‘perforated rock’ because the island indeed has a sort of rock tunnel. Aside from offering great beauty, the Atuh Beach apparently has long been used to perform various activities of worship. Not far from the beach, there is a temple named Atuh Temple. It is often visited
by Hindus pilgrims around the Pejukutan and Tanglad village, especially on special holidays. To the west of the Atuh Temple there are two springs, one of which is considred sacred and is only used for ceremonial purposes. The other spring is used by surrounding communities for various purposes. According to local stories, the two springs emmerged during the dry season. A dove was seen drinking under a coconut tree and upon further investigation, the springs were found. READ Turtle Lays Egg in Front of Fairmont Sanur Beach Uniquely, both springs that are located adjacent to the beach, have tasteless water and never run dry – even in the dry season. Thus, local residents named the beach ‘Atuh Beach.’ In Balinese, the word /atuh/ is derived from two stems namely ‘a’ (not) and ‘tuh’ (dry) so the . word /atuh/ is interpreted to mean ‘never dry out.’ To get to Atuh Beach, from mainland Bali, visitors must first reach Nusa Penida by boat from Matahari Terbit pier in Sanur (Denpasar) or from Sampalan pier in Klungkung. Handling of critical lands runs slowly
MANGUPURA - Handling of critical land in Bali can be said to be running slow. Data of the Bali Forestry Agency indicate that critical lands in Bali in 2013 reached 44,669.78 hectares. So far, it could have been handled about 12,000 hectares. Such handling has been underway since 2010. Most critical lands are located outside the forest area reaching 26,346.10 hectares. “Since 2010, approximately 12,000 hectares of critical lands have been dealt with, but we do not carry in terms of area as a whole,” said the Division Head of Land Rehabilitation and Social Forestry, the Bali Forestry Agency, I Ketut Subawa, in the “Journalist Workshop on Covering Climate Change” posing a cooperation of Dr. Soetomo Press Institute and the Embassy of Norway in Kuta,
Badung, Wednesday (Dec. 14). Subawa reasoned that shortage of funds is the cause of slow handling to critical land considering the handling in the forest area is done through reforestation, forest management and security. Then, outside the region is implemented through community participation by providing free seedlings. One hectare of land is only budgeted as much as IDR 3 million for
seedlings and planting. Besides, the success of planting done is not comparable to the process of land degradation occurred. “We annually carry out reforestation and planting activities. The success is uncertain. For instance, if we now plant 25 hectares of critical land and the area of critical land will immediately reduce 25 hectares, it’s unlike that. If we plant in rainy season, the possibility to grow will be bigger. On the contrary, when planting in dry season, it has smaller percentage to grow,” he explained. In 2016, added Subawa, the Forestry Agency targeted to plant 1 million trees outside forest areas
and they mostly belong to critical area. If per hectare land of community needs 400 trees, the critical land rehabilitated is only about 250 hectares. Actually, the conservation of land outside the forest area is needed to cover up the shortage of forest area in Bali which only amounts to 22 percent. “Ideally, the forest area is 30 percent. To achieve the forest acreage up to 30 percent of the forest area is impossible. That’s why the conservation efforts for the fulfillment of oxygen in the framework of environmental balance are attempted outside the region,” he explained. Subawa added that in line with
planting efforts, people having the land are also given counseling. Hopefully, they will not just use the land for economic purposes but also participate in conservation effort. In this case, it is intended for long-lived plants and is not intended for harvest or exploitation mainly in the sloping areas prone to erosion. “For example, in the planting of albizia, we indeed provide the assistance of seedlings for the community. If it has been delivered to the communities, they then have the right to harvest it. But in a series of preservation, we still have to give extension so that it will not be cut entirely,” he concluded. (kmb32)

Japanese Encephalitis attacks Klungkung, 22 suspects, three people tested positive
SEMARAPURA - Japanese encephalitis or JE virus was first known to spread to Klungkung in 2015. In 2016, the number of case increased to 22 suspects and three children were tested positive. The virus derived from pigs and transmitted by Culex mosquito attacks the brains of patients so that it can have an impact on the intellectual and causes paralysis. According to the data owned by the Klungkung Health Agency, the number of JE virus case was first found on February 8, 2015.
The officers also took samples and did laboratory tests with positive results. In 2015, there were totally 11 suspects of JE virus cases. Furthermore, in 2016 the JE suspect increased to 22 cases and three of them were tested positive. According to the Head of the Klungkung Health Agency, Ni Made Adi Swapatni, accompanied by surveillance staff Putu Gede Semaratika said that the results of surveillance by the health officer indicated there are people infected with JE virus. The officers also
took blood samples and examined in the laboratory. After that, three people were tested positive. “The transmission of this virus is through Culex mosquitoes exposed through pigs. However, in the cases at Bungbungan there are no pigs in the area,” she said when met on Wednesday (Dec. 14). Of the 22 suspect cases of JE virus, the most occurred in Banjarangkan subdistrict with a total of six cases. However, the most severe case occurred in Nusa Penida subdistrict, precisely at Sukun hamlet,
Batukandik on April 2, 2016. As a result of being infected with JE virus, a 10-year-old child named Ni Kadek Feby Ulandari was experiencing stiffness in the muscles. Disorders of motor nerves causing paralysis or stiffness in muscles have indeed become one of the effects of the JE virus. If the virus is not handled properly and lasts for a long time it is likely to result in mental disorders such as emotional instability, speaking slowly, personality changes and paralyzed in several parts of the body. “Treat-
ment of muscular rigidity is carried out with physiotherapy,” she added. With increasing cases of JE virus, people are asked to be vigilant, especially those living in a neighborhood that has a pigsty. In most cases, this virus attacks children whose surrounding environment has pigsty. “In addition to fogging, we also cooperate with the closest animal health centers to inspect pigs around the settlement where JE virus suspect is known to occur,” she concluded. BWS Bali-Penida asked to study installation of gabion wall
SINGARAJA - Installation of gabion wall on the beaches in Buleleng was addressed by Commission III of the Bali House of Representatives. It made site inspection to the installation of gabion wall by the management of The Lovina, Friday (Dec. 16). The Commission ordered the Bali-Penida river agency (BWS) to conduct a study of the installation of coastal protection. If coastal protection causes damages (abrasion—Ed), the parliament requested the relevant agency to dismantle the coastal protection installed by the hotel or residents. Site inspection of the parliament was led by Secretary of Commission III, Ketut Kariyasa Adnyana, accompanied by his members and a legislator of Buleleng, Gusti Made Artana. The entourage was also accompanied by the Head of the BWS Bali-Penida working unit, Putu Edi. The first location visited was the installation of gabion wall by the management of The Lovina. At this location, the entourage had a close look at the construction of coastal protection installed by the hotel. Additionally, the parliament directly met the representatives of
hotel management to ask for the explanation. In essence, the gabion wall is installed to prevent damage due to scour of the beach. Although it has a good intention, the hotel management is reminded to comply with the regulations in doing coastal construction. In addition, a study of the environmental impact must be carried out, so that the intention to prevent erosion will even cause damages to the surrounding areas. Secretary of Commission III, Kariyasa Adnyana, said that coastal damage in Buleleng mainly in the tourist area of Lovina is quite alarming. People living near the beach or the hotel should install coastal protection. Such an effort seems to protect the environment in one-sided manner. The area around the coastal protection such as in the north of The Lovina and area of Tukadmungga turns damaged. “We are coming down because of people’s complaints. One of them is related to the installation of gabion wall at Lovina. If we observe, the coastal protection is indeed carried out in one-sided manner, but it even harms the area and others,” he said.
According to this PDI-Struggle politician from Busungbiu village, for the time being residents or the hotels wishing to install coastal protection are expected to pay attention to environmental impact and comply with the regulation. The government has regulated the development at seashore so as to follow the rules on the coastal border, building permit (IMB) and statement of environmental management (SPPL). In addition, the parliament requested the BWS Bali-Penida to conduct a study related to the rise of coastal protection installation. If the installation of coastal protection causes damages to the surrounding beaches, relevant agency is asked to take firm action and dismantle the coastal protection installed. “We do not want this coastal protection only rescues particular area unilaterally, while the surrounding areas become the victims. To that end, we ask to postpone the installation elsewhere. Also we ask the BWS to examine this and if it indeed causes damage we will ask the relevant agency to dismantle,” he explained.
In the meantime, the chief of the BWS Bali-Penida working unit Putu Edi said that the installation of coastal protection as found at Lovina is indeed appropriate to prevent abrasion. However, he has not dared to ascertain whether the installation of coastal protection will trigger worse abrasion or not. LOS ANGELES — Gina Rodriguez imagined a Hollywood-style awards show that recognized young women for realizing their dreams in science, public policy and community service, so the actress followed her own dream and made it happen. The “Jane the Virgin” star is producer and host of the inaugural Marie Claire Young Women’s Honors , airing Monday as a special on the CW at 9 p.m. ET. The show has all the trappings of a typical Hollywood awards ceremony — a glitzy dinner with celebrity presenters such as Katie Holmes and Hailee Steinfeld — except the honorees are female achievers outside the entertainment industry, like entrepreneur-inventor Jessica Matthews and political activist Amanda Nguyen. “I’ve always wanted to do work to uplift women, to put women in the forefront of the media and to really glorify other aspects of our society that aren’t just fame driven,” Rodriguez said in a recent interview. “There are a lot of wonderful things that a woman can do
and is capable of that we don’t see that often in the media and pop culture. ... And it would be great to start streaming stuff like Young Women’s Honors through the same apparatus that says you should have lip injections.” The show, taped last month at the Marina del Rey Marriott in Los Angeles, also spotlights Olympic gymnast Simone Biles, Paralympian Tatyana McFadden and Fereshteh Forough , who is providing income possibilities to women in Afghanistan by teaching them computer coding skills. SEOUL — The jailed confidante of disgraced South Korean President Park Geun-hye begins a trial Monday that will explore a scandal that led to Park’s impeachment after millions took to the streets in protest. The trial of Choi Soon-sil, Park’s friend of 40 years, is the biggest since the 2014 trial of the crew of a ferry that sank and killed more than 300 people, mostly teenagers. Ten others swept up in the scandal also face trial. Speculation about Choi dominated local news every day for months, but she is still a mystery. She last appeared in public on Oct. 31, when, after losing a Prada shoe in a crush of media and protesters, she told reporters at the Seoul prosecutors’ office that she had “committed a sin that deserves death.” THE TRIAL Monday’s hearing at the Seoul Central District Court will review the charges against Choi, who pros-
ecutors say manipulated state affairs and extorted businesses. It will also set the trial schedule. Choi is not required to attend this session. The trial is open to the public. Worried about a crush of spectators, the court last week raffled admission tickets. It’s not clear how long the trial will last. Courts normally issue a verdict within six months of indictment, so she’ll likely get a verdict by May if prosecutors don’t bring new charges. Choi is charged with abuse of
power, extortion and attempted fraud. If convicted on all charges, she could receive up to 15 years in prison, according to court spokesman Shin Jae-hwan. Before her arrest, Choi said she that received some of Park’s speeches in advance but that she didn’t know if they included confidential information. She denied the other allegations. Prosecutors allege that Choi helped pressure 16 companies to donate a total of 77.4 billion won ($65.6 million) to create two nonprofit foundations, Mir and K-Sports. According to the prosecution, Park first brought up the idea of launching the foundations and ordered her senior secretary for policy coordination at the time, Ahn Jongbeom, to ask companies to finance their establishment while letting

The two women became friends in the 1970s, around the time when Park Geun-hye began serving as first lady after her mother was killed during a failed 1974 assassination attempt on Park Chunghee.
