Fuss in Bounty Discotheque
Two foreigners and bodyguards stabbed Denpasar (Bali Post)—
Violence in a nightclub occurred again. Recently, a tense situation haunted the Bounty Discotheque on Jalan Legian, Kuta, Badung, Friday morning (Dec 16). They were two Australian namely Cristope, 26, and Jake Benjamin Whitehead, while two others were locals namely Ketut Sentanu and Wayan Mu. The four victims suffered a stab wound and slash in some parts of their body. They were then rushed to BIMC Hospital, but one victim (Cristope—Ed) had been referred to Sanglah Hospital as got slightly severe injury. Meanwhile, the perpetrator of stabbing and slashing had not been LGHQWLÂżHG 3ROLFH ZHUH VWLOO FKDVLQJ WKH perpetrator. Allegedly, the perpetrator was a local guide who often buzzed out in Kuta area. Based on the information gathered, the massacre action took place around 2:00 a.m. Local Time. Previously, both foreign victims along with two bodyguards came to the scene to enjoy the glitter of nightlife in Bounty Discotheque. Likewise,the perpetrator with a foreigner also came to the same venue with the same purpose. They equally had a spirit feast at the scene while enjoying music. “At that time, visitors of the discotheque had been busy,â€? said a source in police station last Saturday.Allegedly, they had been affected by alcoholic beverages, while the foreigner taken by the perpetrator dropped the drink of the victim Cristope. Knowing this, Cristope then asked him to replace
the drink. However, the foreigner refused it and it kindled a little dispute. Eventually, the dispute grew bigger making the perpetrator act brutally. Desire to resume geothermal project A form of central government arrogance Denpasar (Bali Post)—
The desire to continue the geothermal project at Bedugul as expressed by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Jero Wacik not long ago had been criticized by the environmental activist Agung Wardana. According to the activist who is also an advocate, the desire posed a form of the central government arrogance opening up an old problem that had been decisively rejected by the components of Balinese people. Evidently, the Bali House had issued a recommendation that clearly asked the Governor of Bali to reject the project. “If the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources is planning to re-open it, I think it an arrogance and inconsistency of government related to the geothermal,â€? saidAgung Wardana to Bali Post, Saturday (Dec 17). According to Agung Wardana, based on the environmental impact analysis prepared by a team from Udayana University the geothermal project had a number of large impacts that could not be managed. They included the decreased biodiversity, reduction of water Ă€RZ DQG GHFUHDVH LQ WKH VDQFWLW\ of the upstream region. Moreover, the bhisama (religious stipulation) maintained through the regional regulation on the Bali regional spatial plan (RTRWP) stated that mountain and forest areas should be protected because they were considered sacred by the Balinese. “I see there is an effort of people who agree to geothermal by saying that Bali needs an independent electrical energy. I try to answer this problem. If Bali requires an independent electrical energy, so what is the purpose to join in the frame of the Unitary Republic of Indonesia (NKRI)? From the beginning, we have made a social contract with the NKRI so that islands within this Republic of Indonesia can mutually help based on their existing potential. For example, the electrical power needed by Bali with tourism and agriculture-based economy
should be helped by other regions having that capacity,� he said. Irrelevant
Agung Wardana also saw if there were efforts to lead Balinese people whether to choose geothermal energy that technically known as eco-friendly or to choose coal energy. According to him, the question was irrelevant because seeing the massive development of mass tourism, the hotels and all kinds of tourism development in Bali had made the surge in the electricity demand. If geothermal power plant would be built, he said, in the future if the tourism industry would not be controlled properly, it would also need to be supported by coal power plant. In other words, the choice would not only be geothermal or coal but geothermal and coal at the same time. “I want to convey to the supporters of geothermal and Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, dare you warrant when geothermal plant is built, the coal plant will not be built? I observe that geothermal plant will be built and coal plant will be built, too. So, Bali will equally lose,� he reminded. According to Agung Wardana, as if the government scared Balinese people that if they did not support the geothermal project Bali would turn dark. He said it was a terror to the community. Actually, government should conduct an audit to the electricity in Bali to see the power capacity, who
consumed the most power and who ZRXOG EHQHÂżW IURP WKH GHYHORSPHQW of such powerhouse. “In my opinion, when the audit is carried out it will be clear if more electricity consumption in Bali is not used by the people. However, it was mostly consumed by tourism-related companies. Why should the electrical supply for tourism industry be imposed to our environment that is threatened to be damaged? Ideally, those companies should provide independent energy either through solar power or diesel power. That’s up to them because they consume the electrical energy so that they are responsible for building the power plants independently. Capacity of PLN is how to provide an ecofriendly electric service to the people,â€? he said while adding that geothermal project at Bedugul was clearly taking the forest area, reducing the sanctity, and the community around the Lake Tamblingan had felt the bad impact of sulfur annoying their daily activities. In response to the revival of geothermal development discourse, Agung Wardana hoped the people’s representatives in the Bali House to remain consistent with their recommendations issued from the outset. The Bali House stated that geothermal should be rejected. “In my opinion, the Bali House must enforce its recommendation and the Governor must also dare to express his opposition against the project,â€? he said. TOKYO — South Korea’s visiting president pressed his Japanese counterpart Sunday to resolve a long-standing grievance regarding Korean women forced to serve as sexual slaves during World War II, calling it a “stumbling block” in their relations. Japan maintains that the matter was settled by a bilateral treaty in 1965 that normalized relations, and Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda said he reiterated that stance during their meeting in the ancient capital of Kyoto. Japanese officials have apologized to the victims, who say they still want compensation and the prosecution of wrongdoers. President Lee Myung-bak said only 63 women who have identified themselves publicly as former wartime sex slaves are still alive, average age 86. He said 16 such
women died this year. “They could all die in a few years,” Lee said, according to his spokesman Park Jeong-ha. “In such a case, (the issue) will remain a big burden the two countries cannot resolve ... We can only resolve (the issue) now.” Historians say up to 200,000 women, mainly from the Korean peninsula and China, were forced to provide sex for Japanese soldiers in military brothels during the war. “South Korea and Japan should become true partners for co-prosperity and regional peace and stabil-
ity. For that, I think we need to have the genuine courage of resolving as a priority the issue of comfort women, which has been a stumbling block in relations between the two countries,” Lee told Noda, according to a media pool report posted on the president’s website. The issue has emerged after South Korea’s Constitutional Court ruled in August that it’s unconstitutional for the government not to make specific diplomatic efforts to settle the matter, essentially pushing Lee’s government to raise that matter with Tokyo. Philippines - Rescuers searched for more than 100 people still missing in the southern Philippines Sunday after flash floods and landslides swept houses into rivers and out to sea, killing almost 500 people in areas illprepared to cope with deadly storms. The cities of Cagayan de Oro and nearby Iligan on Mindanao island were worst hit when Typhoon Wasi slammed ashore while people slept late Friday and early Saturday, sending torrents of water and mud through villages and stripping mountainsides bare. “This is the first time this has happened in our city,” Vicente Emano, mayor of Cagayan de Oro, said in a radio interview. He said officials in the area did not receive adequate warning before the typhoon struck. The Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) estimated 497 were killed in eight provinces in the southern Mindanao region, with more than 100 still missing.
“It’s difficult to be certain on those missing,” Gwendolyn Pang, secretary-general of the PNRC, told Reuters. “The floods washed out whole houses and families inside. It’s possible entire families are dead and no one is reporting them missing.” The latest report by the state disaster agency said 327 people had been killed and 274 were missing. Disaster and health officials were struggling to deal with the scores of bodies that have been recovered. Some have been stacked one on top of another in local mortuaries. Mindanao island, the southernmost in the Philippines, is a mineral-rich region that also produces rice and corn but is not normally on the path of an average 20 typhoons that hit the Southeast Asian country each year. “This pose challenges to us ... We need to educate people with this kind of change in climate,” Pang said. “The volume of rainfall for one month fell for just one day.”

The ICM survey for The Sunday Telegraph put the Tories up two points since the summit on 40 percent -- its highest score since the May 2010 general election. Labour was down two points at 34 percent, while the Liberal Democrats were unchanged on 14 percent. A projection of what that would mean in terms of seats in the House of Commons put the Conservatives at 322, just short of an overall majority in the 650-seat House. David Cameron refused to join members of the eurozone currency bloc in a new fiscal pact. The survey found that 41 percent of voters thought the split over Europe between the more eurosceptic Conservatives and the europhile Lib Dems would break up the coalition, with 45 percent saying the alliance would survive. The survey also found that 35 percent wanted a referendum on leaving the EU within one year, a further 16 percent before the end of this parliament and a further eight percent by the end of the next parliament. Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

TIMIKA — Gunmen attacked a helicopter carrying 29 workers and family members from Freeport-McMoRan’s trouble-plagued gold and copper mine in eastern Indonesian on Saturday, wounding one person, officials said. The attack came as thousands of unionized employees were preparing to return to the Grasberg mine in the mountains of Papua province following a three-month strike that has crippled production at the sprawling operation. Though the 8,000 striking workers were supposed to be back on the job Saturday after management agreed to a 37 percent pay hike, union spokesman Juli Parorrongan said plans were pushed back so the two sides could iron out last minute details. It was not immediately clear who was behind Saturday’s attack or what the motive may have been. Those on the Hevilift chopper did not appear to be tied to the work
stoppage. Unidentified gunmen opened fire minutes after liftoff from the mining town of Tembagapura, said police spokesman Col. Wachjono. With only slight damage to the body of the aircraft, the Russian pilots were able to continue on to Timika, where they landed safely. Mary Jane Mather, the Filipino wife of one of the employees, was being treated for shrapnel wounds, another police officer said. The Phoenix-based Freeport — which had hoped the end of the three-month strike would spell the end of trouble at its Grasberg mine — said a full investigation would be carried out into the attack. Parorrongan, the union represen-
tative, meanwhile, said he hoped the striking workers would be back to their jobs “soon,” possibly by the middle of next week. The two sides still were hammering out the finer points, such as how to mobilize those who live far from the mining town and a guarantee that those who took part in the strike would not face any sanctions, he said. Tensions between the two sides soared after workers walked off their jobs on Sept. 15 — the second strike in a matter of months — several times erupting in violence. At least nine people were killed, including several strikers shot by security forces. A pipeline carrying ore concentrate to the port was damaged in an apparent act of sabotage. JAKARTA - Indonesia’s president has ordered an investigation into the videotaped beheadings of two men — allegedly by security forces hired to secure the borders of a palm oil plantation. Six suspects — five plantation workers and a farmer — already have been arrested for their alleged role in the deaths, national police spokesman Col. Boy Raffli Amar said Friday. Eight other suspects are at large. Indonesia is one of the world’s largest producers of palm oil — used to make everything from lipstick to biscuits to biofuel — and the rapid expansion of plantations across the sprawling archipelagic nation of 240 million has led to many violent disputes with local communities. Land is often forcibly seized — also by timber, pulp and paper companies — without any offers of compensation. But the allegations by farmers from South Sumatra province, if confirmed, would be by far the most shocking so far. A dozen men, accompanied by a retired general, traveled to the capital, Jakarta, earlier this week to present their case before Parliament’s human rights commission.
They told its members at least 30 farmers have been killed by security forces and men hired by a palm oil company in Mesuji district since 2009 — two of them beheaded in April. They presented two video clips as evidence, though one appears to be unrelated to the dispute. In the first, a decapitated corpse is shown hanging from an electricity pole in Mesuji, according to witnesses. Then it jumps to another headless body on the ground, masked men, some toting assault rifles, milling about in the background. Next, two bloody heads are shown on the roof of a truck, also in Mesuji. The other clip appears to unrelated, however, possibly from the separatist insurgency in southern Thailand, judging from the dialect and words of the assailant. It shows a man dressed in camouflage standing in the woods, an assault rifle slung over his shoulder, holding onto a freshly severed head by the hair. “Fathoni Darussalam,” he says triumphantly, using the cry of Pattani separatists in southern Thailand. “Freedom! Freedom!” Ifdhal Kasim, who heads the National Commission on Human Rights, condemned the killings.

Surveys in recent years have shown that Indonesia’s poor infrastructure is the main deterrent to doing business there. The bill gives the government the right to acquire civilian land for projects such as roads, railways, ports, airports and power plants, in exchange for compensation.
It will take effect once it is signed by the president within 30 days. The Indonesian Employers’ Association (IEA) said that tackling the land acquisition bottleneck would have a ripple effect on other development projects. “Over the last two years, we have won many tenders and secured around Rp 400 trillion ($44.4 billion) in bank loans for various projects, but they can’t go ahead until we have the right ports, railways and other infra-
structure,” said IEA chairman Sofjan Wanandi. The government is planning a $440 billion public infrastructure overhaul by 2014 and is relying on private investment to foot 90 percent of the bill. Its plans have been stalled in the past by public resistance to the acquisition of land. Under the new law, landowners must settle compensation claims within 30 days to ensure projects do not stall.
Despite slow-moving bureaucracy and rampant corruption, investors continue to pour billions of dollars into Indonesia to tap the country’s abundant natural resources and burgeoning domestic market in the world’s fourth most populous country. Foreign direct investment is forecast to top $20 billion by the end of the year, and with Indonesia achieving an investment-grade sovereign debt status from Fitch ratings on Thursday, that figure is likely to rise fast.

Prepare the spice paste by grinding or blending all ingredients except oil. Heat the oil and sauté the spice paste for 2 minutes. Add the duck, increase heat and sauté for 3 minutes, stirring frequently. Add the coconut milk and all ingredients except fried shallots and simmer, uncovered, until the duck is tender and the sauce has thickened. Garnish with fried shallots and serve with white rice. The founding members of the classic rock group — Brian Wilson, Mike Love and Al Jardine — announced Friday they are getting back together to celebrate their 50th anniversary. Complicating matters is the fact that Hendricks has caused a major international incident -- let’s just say he blows up the wrong building -- and made it look it Hunt and his team were responsible. Disavowed by the government, the three of them, along with IMF desk jockey Brandt (Jeremy Renner), must go on a globetrotting mission to save the world.
Bieber stages concert at low-income Vegas school Associated Press Writer LAS VEGAS — Fifth-grader Jolie Leach says she “was gonna explode” with excitement when Justin Bieber performed a concert at her Las Vegas school, and vowed she’d never wash her hand after he gave her a high-five. Leach was one of hundreds who showed clear symptoms of Bieber fever after the 17-yearold teen pop sensation staged a private show Friday at low-income Whitney Elementary School. The concert was filmed for an episode of “The Ellen Degeneres Show” and came two months after Bieber promised the school’s 650 students a $100,000 donation. “He really came for us. I’m so glad that he really came for us,” said fourth-grader Kynedi Harris, holding a fluffy white stuffed dog picked from a truckload of toys Bieber distributed at his show. Tucked in a downtrodden neighborhood on the east side of Las Vegas, Whitney Elementary has garnered publicity, including a September segment on Degeneres’ show, for providing needy students’ families with food, clothes, money for utility bills — and just about everything in between. Principal Sherrie Gahn said more than 85 percent of the school’s 600-plus students receive free or reduced-price lunch. The school also has one of the highest homeless student populations in the Clark County School District. Gahn, who said she used to see students pocketing ketchup packets from the cafeteria in hopes of having dinner at night, told “The Ellen Degeneres Show” she made a pact with families after she arrived about eight years ago.
“I’ll pay your electrical bill, your utilities, I’ll give you food or clothes, whatever you need, as long as you give me your child and then help raise that child as a person of character,” she said. Families at the school told the show Gahn has stayed true to her promise. One girl said Gahn provided her with a bed. A mother said the principal bought her son glasses. Another mother said the school provided her children with Christmas presents when she planned to skip the gift-giving.

WASHINGTON — A small comet survived what astronomers ďŹ gured would be a sure death when it danced uncomfortably close to the broiling sun. Comet Lovejoy, which was only discovered a couple of weeks ago, was supposed to melt Thursday night when it came close to where temperatures hit several million degrees. Astronomers had tracked 2,000 other sun-grazing comets make the same suicidal trip. None had ever survived. But astronomers watching live with NASA telescopes ďŹ rst saw the sun’s corona wiggle as Lovejoy went close to the sun. They were then shocked when a bright spot emerged on the sun’s other side. Lovejoy lived. “I was delighted when I saw it go into the sun and I was astounded when I saw something re-emerge,â€? said U.S. Navy solar researcher Karl Battams. Lovejoy didn’t exactly come out of its hellish adventure unscathed. Only 10 percent of the comet — which was probably millions of tons — survived the encounter, said W. Trufe farmers have never had to worry about demand. It is the supply side that is worrying, with global warming an ever more present threats to their success. “You don’t market the trufe, you manage its scarcity,â€? said Jean-Charles Savignac, president of the French Trufe Growers Federation (FFT). The 2010-11 season’s output was a meagre 25 tonnes, a severe shortfall blamed on a lack of water, which is vital for the Tuber melanosporum, the scientiďŹ c name for the black trufe cherished by gourmets. “If we had supplied 100 times more, it would all be sold,â€? Savignac said, recalling annual harvests of 200 to 300 tonnes in the 1960s, “sold without the slightest difďŹ culty.â€? He said a century ago output reached a “somewhat mythical 1,000 tonnes,â€? and still found takers despite a smaller world popula-
tion and far more difďŹ cult delivery means. Explanations for the ever-shrinking supply begin with the rural exodus that emptied the French countryside after World War II. The trufe’s natural habitat was affected as farmland gave way to natural reforestation or bush, according to trufe expert Pierre Sourzat, who added that “sometimes very effective competitorsâ€? -- other fungi that colonise tree roots -- encroached on its territory. Weather variations are no help. “The trufe, which is very sensitive to water, is something of a marker of climatic changes,â€? Savignac said. In the summer of 2003, when a devastating heatwave gripped France, “three quarters of natural trufes vanished,â€? Sourzat said. “In the plantations, two-thirds to three-quarters of the trees stopped producing the following years. Other mushrooms that are more adapted to drought beat out the trufe.â€?

Details of the contract were not announced. Landry, 28, averaged 11.8 points and 4.1 rebounds in 23 games for the Hornets last season after being acquired in a trade with Sacramento. He is expected to be the Hornets’ starting power forward this season as they rebuild without Paul, who was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers. “Carl was a huge part of our success in making the playoffs last season, and we couldn’t be more excited to have him back,” Hornets general manager Dell Demps said in a statement.
