‘Predator’ slays rivals at N. America box office LOS ANGELES - “The Predator” -- the latest installment in the long-running sci-fi action series -- staved off the competition and overcame a last-minute controversy to conquer the North American box office this weekend, industry data showed Monday. But the Fox reboot, which cost $88 million to make, will look to earn back some money in international markets, as its $24.6 million opening three-day haul did not meet expectations. The movie, which comes more than 30 years after the franchise’s original film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, hit a snag before its release when the studio was forced to cut a scene featuring an actor who was a registered sex offender. Star Olivia Munn had requested the change, saying she was unaware of the actor’s past when the scene was filmed. Director Shane Black initially said he hired the actor because he was a friend, but later issued a strong apology. So far, it has earned $30 million overseas, according to box office tracker Exhibitor Relations. Dropping to second place but still going strong was last week’s top draw, “The Nun” -- the latest fright fest in the popular “Conjuring” series. It earned $18.2 million in its second week. “Nun” stars Taissa Farmiga -- whose sister Vera headlined two “Conjuring” films -- in a story about a young nun, an exorcist and a guide stumbling onto a dark secret deep in Dracula country in the 1950s. Opening in the third spot was

“A Simple Favor,” a tale about a mommy blogger (Anna Kendrick) investigating the disappearance of her friend (Blake Lively). The Lionsgate film raked in $16 million on the back of positive reviews. Matthew McConaughey’s new film “White Boy Rick” opened in fourth place with $8.9 million. The movie, based on a true story, stars the Oscar winner as the father of a teenage boy who became an informant for the FBI in the 1980s. Glitzy rom-com “Crazy Rich Asians,” another Warner Bros product along with “The Nun,” fell to fifth place. The film, with a nearly all-Asian cast led by Henry Golding and Constance Wu, took in $8.7 million, building on a crazygood run. (afp)

(L-R) Michael Zegen, Daniel Palladino, Amy Sherman-Palladino, Alex Borstein and Rachel Brosnahan attend the Amazon Prime Video post Emmy Awards party at Cecconi’s on September 17, 2018 in West Hollywood, California.

LOS ANGELES - The 70th Emmy Awards opened Monday on a political note, with edgy jokes hurled at everything from diversity in Hollywood to Donald Trump, as television’s top stars settled in for a showdown between drama heavyweights “Game of Thrones” and “The Handmaid’s Tale.” After the stars strutted up the red carpet at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles, the three-hour gala opened with a daring song-and-dance number poking fun at an array of hot-button issues in America. “We solved it!” crooned “Saturday Night Live” nominees Kate McKinnon and Kenan Thompson, with back-up from pop stars John Legend and Ricky Martin -- and even RuPaul -- about the problem of diversity on the small screen. They then yielded the stage to hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che, who are also regulars on the veteran NBC comedy sketch show -- and let

the zingers fly. “This year, the audience is allowed to drink in their seats. Hope you’re excited about that -- because the one thing Hollywood needs right now is a bunch of people losing their inhibitions at a work function,” Jost said, a reference to #MeToo. In describing “The Handmaid’s Tale,” one of the evening’s top nominees, Che said the Hulu show “takes place in an imaginary future where an entire group of people is violently forced to work and make babies against their will.” “It’s what black people call history. It’s ‘Roots’ for white women,” he quipped, referring to the landmark 1970s television mini-series

about slavery. It was an offbeat yet amusing start to the Primetime Emmys, television’s version of the Oscars. Looking to boost audience ratings, organizers said they were hoping to shake up the format. The early part of the night was dedicated to the comedy programs: sentimental favorite Henry Winkler won his first Emmy for best supporting actor for his work on HBO’s caustic tale of a hitmanturned-actor, “Barry.” His co-star Bill Hader won the prize for best lead actor. Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs Maisel” won both for lead actress (Rachel Brosnahan) and supporting actress (Alex Borstein). (afp)

The forest area, belonging to the State Forestry Company, Perhutani, was located in West Ponorogo, second inspector Satrio Teguh, spokesman of the Ponorogo Police, stated here, Tuesday. A joint team, comprising military and police personnel, local fire fighters, and volunteers, immediately rushed to the location to put out the fire on Monday evening, he stated, adding that the fire was successfully extinguished. The cause of the fire was unknown, but the blaze destroyed at least one hectare area of teakwood forest owned by local farmers and 0.015 hectare of forest area belonging to Perhutani. The ongoing prolonged drought has caused water shortage in several regions, such as in the provinces of East Nusa Tenggara and West Java, and triggered fires in forest areas, particularly in Kalimantan, Java and Sumatra. On Java Island, wildfires were earlier reported to have razed forest areas located on the slopes of Mount Sindoro in Central Java Province, Mount Lawu in the border of the provinces of Central and East Java, Mount Argopuro in East Java Province, and Mount Sumbing and in Central Java. Wildfires on Mount Sumbing, located in Temanggung District, has spread to a wider area, according to Gito Walngadi of the local disaster mitigation office, recently. On Sunday, the fires were detected in five locations, measuring a total of 490.9 hectares on Mt Sumbing, he stated. Nearly 170 personnel were deployed to extinguished the fires. A helicopter was also used to assist in the efforts on Monday. (ant) A helicopter conducts water bomb operations to extinguish a fire in Ogan Ilir, South Sumatra on September 17, 2018.
