BERLIN - Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron said she hoped to even the playing field in the male-dominated spy film genre with her latest role as a deadly agent in action-thriller movie “Atomic Blonde.”

“I saw potential in this character,” Theron, 41, told Reuters at the Berlin premiere of “Atomic Blonde” on Monday.

“I wanted to explore a woman in this world and have her kind of play with the same set of rules that men get to play in,” added the actress, who won an Academy Award for her role as a serial killer in the 2003 film “Monster.”

“Atomic Blonde,” based on Antony Johnston’s graphic novel series “The Coldest City” and out in theaters on July 28, follows MI6’s lethal bisexual assassin Lorraine Broughton (Theron) in Berlin in 1989. Broughton is on a mission to recover a list of double agents, in a city simmering with revolution and double-crossing hives of traitors.

Spy movies have been dominated by male leads, such as the “James Bond,” “Mission Impossible” and

“Bourne” franchise.

Theron, who shows off her physical fighting prowess in the role, said “the skill of this was definitely a challenge. I wanted people to believe that she was that good.”

Actress Sofia Boutella, who plays spy Delphine Lasalle, the love interest of Theron’s character, said she was “a bit nervous at first” when filming a sex scene with Theron, but that the actress helped her relax.

“She made me feel very comfortable and she made me laugh. She just guided me through it in a very easy way. She was lovely and fun to work with,” Boutella said. Jay-Z’s “4:44” finally makes it to Billboard 200 chart -at No. 1

LOS ANGELES - Jay-Z’s new confessional and political release, “4:44,” finally entered the Billboard 200 album chart, storming to the top spot and scoring his 14th No. 1 release.

The rapper and producer sold 262,000 units of “4:44,” according to data from Nielsen SoundScan on Monday, to earn the fourthhighest one-week album sales total of 2017.

The album, on which Jay-Z admits cheating on his wife Beyonce and addresses the birth last month

of their twins, was released on June 30 as a one-week exclusive to members of his streaming platform Tidal and customers of wireless carrier Sprint Corp.

Despite being certified platinum in its first week, “4:44” was absent from last week’s Billboard 200 album chart because Tidal did not report numbers to Nielsen Music.

The Billboard 200 album chart tallies units from album sales, song sales (10 songs equal one album) and streaming activity

(1,500 streams equal one album).

Jay-Z already holds the record as the most successful solo artist on the Billboard 200 chart. His 14 albums debuting at No. 1 beats tallies by Bruce Springsteen and Barbra Streisand, Billboard said.

However, despite the critical praise and publicity for “4:44,” Nielsen-reported sales were well below the 2017 debuts of rapper Kendrick Lamar’s “DAMN.”, with 603,000 units, Drake’s “More Life” and British singer Ed Sheeran’s “Divide.” (rtr)

MADRID — Spanish Football Federation president Angel Maria Villar was arrested along with his son and two more federation executives in an anti-corruption investigation on Tuesday.

Villar, who is FIFA’s senior vice president and a UEFA vice president, was suspected of having arranged matches for Spain that led to business deals that benefited his son, said the office of the state prosecutor in charge of anti-corruption.

The state prosecutor and Spanish police said Villar, his son Gorka Villar, and two other soccer officials were detained while raids were carried out at the federation headquarters and other properties.

Two uniformed policemen guarded the entrance to the federation as staff went in and out of the offices near the training grounds for Spain’s national teams in Las Rozas, just outside Madrid. The other two men who were arrested were Juan Padron, the federation’s vice president of economic affairs who is also the president of the regional federation for Tenerife, and Ramon Hernandez, the secretary of that regional federation.

The four men were arrested on charges of improper management, misappropriation of funds, corruption and falsifying documents as part of a probe into the finances of the federations. “We have taken note of the media reports concerning the situation of Mr. Villar Llona,” FIFA said in a statement.

“As the matter seems to be linked to internal affairs of the Spanish Football Association, for the time being we kindly refer you to them for further details.”

As part of an operation called “Soule,” the Guardia Civil’s said it raided the national federation’s headquarters, the offices of the regional soccer federation on the is-

land of Tenerife, and “headquarters of businesses and several private homes linked to the arrested individuals.” Police started the probe in early 2016 after a complaint was made by Spain’s Higher Council of Sport, the government’s sports authority.

The probe led the state prosecutor’s office to suspect that Angel Maria Villar “could have arranged matches of the Spanish national team with other national teams, thereby gaining in return contracts for services and other business ventures in benefit of his son.” The prosecutor’s office said they suspect that Padron and the Tenerife secretary “favored the contracting of busi-

ness” for their personal benefit.

Inigo Mendez de Vigo, Spain’s minister of education, culture and sport, told national television moments after the raids that “in Spain the laws are enforced, the laws are the same for all, and nobody, nobody is above the law.” Calls made by The Associated Press to the Spanish and Tenerife federations went unanswered.

UEFA said in a statement it was “aware of the reports regarding Mr. Villar Llona. We have no comment to make at this time.” The Higher Council of Sport said it will “use everything in its means to ensure that competitions are not affected” by the arrests.

A former professional football player, the 67-year-old Villar has been the head of Spain’s soccer federation since 1988, overseeing its national team’s victories in the 2010 World Cup and the 2008 and

2012 European Championships.

Villar has also been at the heart of FIFA and UEFA politics since the 1990s, and has worked closely with several international soccer leaders who have since been indicted by the U.S. Department of Justice.

His son, Gorka, worked in recent years for South American body CONMEBOL as legal director then as the CEO-like director general for three presidents who were implicated in the American federal investigation. Gorka Villar left CONMEBOL in July 2016.

‘Sanur Mostly Jazz’ comes with education and regeneration mission

DENPASAR - ‘Sanur Mostly Jazz Festival’ to be made into an annual agenda wants to contribute in the field of music education and jazz musician regeneration. The originator of the Sanur Mostly Jazz, Indra Lesmana, said that in addition to presenting quality coastal jazz festival packaging, it also puts emphasis on the importance of education, especially at an early age. “In the future, we will equip with workshop and master class from the musicians making performance at this festival,” said Indra on Monday (Jul. 17).

According to Indra, the educational effort is hoped to give birth to young talent expected to be the successor and color the jazz constellation in the country.

As a first step, it has performed five students of Indra Lesmana Music Studio namely Anju and Putri (vocal), Nadine (piano), Christine (music production) and Niken (vocal, music production) in the session of Mostly Jazz brunch and a jam session after the performance of Surya Sewana on Sunday (Jul. 16) at Griya Santrian Resort.

During the three-day festival broadcast through live streaming, it presented Koko Harsoe Trio, Balawan, Yuri Mahatma featuring Nancy Ponto, Dewa Budjana Zentuary and was then closed by Idang Rasjidi featuring Nesia Ardi. In the meantime, on the second day the festival presented Sandy Winarta Trio, Tohpati, Ito Kurdhi Chemistry, Sandhy Sandoro, Oele Pattieselano Trio featuring Margie Segers.

The last day’s performance is considered special because it was the first time for a jazz concert staged in the morning before sunrise. Indra Lesmana (piano, seaboard) presented the repertoire of ‘Surya Sewana’ supported by musicians Indra Gupta (bass), Sandy Winarta (drum, cymbal), Dewa Budjana (guitar), Tina (vocal), Christie (sequencer) and accompanied with gamelan players by Subandi, Made Soplo, Gung Adhi, Emon Bandy, Ngurah Evo and Pacet.

Taking place on Sanur Beach, this jazz festival also included the no less important event namely the action of environmental care. The last day was filled in with a beach clean-up by involving students at Sanur and the release of turtle hatchlings by musicians and spectators. (kmb23)

Exchanging artistic visions and practices

Bali and Australia have a close relationship that is presently dominated by tourism, however given their geographic proximity we can easily imagine that this relationship in fact dates back hundreds if not tens of thousands of years.

As part of Australia’s Aboriginal Week celebrations (NAIDOC), the Australian Embassy in Jakarta, The Australian Consulate in Bali and Bentara Budaya Bali, organized an artistic collaboration between renown and accomplished Australian Aboriginal artist Jandamarra Cadd and Komunitas Djamur, a Denpasar based street art community.

This collaboration involved Jandamarra Cadd sharing art techniques with young Balinese artists but perhaps more importantly, exchanging visual stories about Aboriginal and Balinese symbols and myths. This exchange also involved Jandamarra Cadd and an artist from Komunitas Djamur creating a mural together in which two mythical creatures from Bali and Australia respectively share the space of the single art work.

As Jandamarra Cadd explained: “this collaboration really touched by heart because I know that our ancestors must have been sharing ideas for a very very long time, so i feel honoured to be able to continue this tradition”. Balinese artist Sang Anonim expressed similar feelings saying: “this project was really special because even though we do not speak the same language, art allowed us to connect deeply about the traditional cultures that inform our work”.

The sea turtle served as the icon

for this project representing the transnational oceanic space that these two people’s have been sharing since time immemorial. Animals were also a dominant theme as a reminder of the deeply rooted respect that both of theses cultures have for the natural environment and their place in it.

The didgeridoo is a traditional wind instrument from Australia that has also contributed to building ties with Bali. Traditionally, the long tube of the didgeridoo was created by ants eating out the centre of a certain type of Australian wood.

However, as this instrument has gained popularity worldwide, the ants can no longer meet the demand for these instruments. Woodworkers in Tegallalang have taken up the slack for the ants by becoming producers of this unique instrument.

Local bamboo crafter, instrument maker and performer Rizal is best known for having created his own unique instrument known as the Rasendryia, a bamboo instrument that combines guitar, percussion and digeridoo in a single instrument. Rizal has teamed up with the digeridoo producers of Tegallalang to offer a 3 day workshop (July 24-26) at Omah Apik in Pejeng, exploring the history, techniques and healing potential of this Australian instrument from the perspective of an Indonesian artist.

Robocar, the world’s first AI-powered, self-driving electric racer

2017 is set to be the year of driverless technology, with auto giants such as Ford and Audi making huge financial commitments in the field of motoring AI. But while both firms will be hoping to take the ‘car of the future’ title, that seemingly belongs to this beast of a vehicle from Roborace.

Called Robocar, the racer was unveiled at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, by Denis Sverdlov, CEO of Roborace and Charge, and Daniel Simon, the car’s designer. Sverdlov emphasised that the development of autonomous racing vehicles was a way to create “an emotional connection to driverless cars and bring humans and robots closer together to define our future.”

Robocar was developed in a little under a year but has an array of impressive technological features that

take advantage of the Nvidia’s Drive PX2 brain - the open AI car computing platform capable of 24 trillion AI operations per second. The car is powered by five LiDAR sensors; 18 ultrasonic sensors; six AI cameras and GNSS positioning, and it reaches speeds of 199mph (320kph). This entire system uses deep learning for 360-degree situational awareness around the car, working to determine precisely where the car is and to create its trajectory.

The futuristic design is no surprise, given that Daniel Simon regularly creates vehicles for Hollywood sci-fi movies. If you’ve seen Tron Legacy or Oblivion, you’ve already experienced a small part of Simon’s vision for Robocar’s autonomy. From the low centre of gravity typical of F1 vehicles to a body made predominantly from carbon fibre, the Robocar is said to be “a racing car with a technological edge.” (IBP/net)

Constrained by road width

MANGUPURA — The arrangement of sidewalk on Jalan Raya Kubu Anyar, Kuta, is currently being started by the Badung public works and spatial planning agency (PUPR).

However, the project can only arrange one side of the road. This happens as constrained by the road access that is not too wide.

U.S. officials say the Trump administration, after months of delay, is finalizing plans to revamp the nation’s military command for defensive and offensive cyber-operations.

When confirmed on Monday (Jul. 17), the Head of the Badung Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency, I.B. Surya Suamba, justified such condition. He said if both sides of the sidewalk are built, surely the road will become narrower. “The sidewalk is only built on the right side of the road from the airport direction because if the sidewalk is built on both sides the road will look like an alley,” he said.

Construction of the sidewalk along Jalan Kubu Anyar is expected to be completed in December. This development, said Surya Suamba, is in line with the density of traffic in Kuta. This dense and crowded highway is often used by pedestrians, especially school students. Unfortunately, the road is now starting to be crowded by vehicles.

However, he asserted that the construction of a special path for pedestrians will not necessarily able to eliminate congestion occurred in the region. Construction of this sidewalk is to provide comfort for pedestrians, chiefly school children along the Jalan Kubu Anyar. “Hopefully, this special pedestrian path could provide comfort for the local community,” he hoped. US to create independent military cyber command

WASHINGTON — After months of delay, the Trump administration is finalizing plans to revamp the nation’s military command for defensive and offensive cyber operations in hopes of intensifying America’s ability to wage cyberwar against the Islamic State group and other foes, according to U.S. officials.

Under the plans, U.S. Cyber Command would eventually be split off from the intelligencefocused National Security Agency.

Details are still being worked out, but officials say they expect a decision and announcement in the coming weeks. The officials weren’t authorized to speak publicly on the matter so requested anonymity.

The goal, they said, is to give U.S. Cyber Command more autonomy, freeing it from any constraints that stem from working alongside the NSA, which is responsible for monitoring and collecting telephone, internet and other intelligence data from around the world — a responsibility that can sometimes clash with military operations against enemy forces.

Making cyber an independent military command will put the fight in digital space on the same footing as more traditional realms of battle on land, in the air, at sea and in space. The move reflects the escalating threat of cyberattacks and intrusions from other nation states, terrorist groups and hackers, and comes as the U.S. faces everwidening fears about Russian hacking following Moscow’s efforts to meddle in the 2016 American election.

The U.S. has long operated quietly in cyberspace, using it to collect information, disrupt enemy networks and aid conventional

military missions. But as other nations and foes expand their use of cyberspying and attacks, the U.S. is determined to improve its ability to incorporate cyber operations into its everyday warfighting.

Experts said the command will need time to find its footing.

“Right now I think it’s inevitable, but it’s on a very slow glide path,” said Jim Lewis, a cybersecurity expert with the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

But, he added, “A new entity is not going to be able to duplicate NSA’s capabilities.”

The NSA, for examples, has 300 of the country’s leading mathematicians “and a gigantic super computer,” Lewis said. “Things like this are hard to duplicate.”

He added, however, that over time, the U.S. has increasingly used cyber as a tactical weapon, bolstering the argument for separating it from the NSA. The two highly secretive organizations, based at Fort Meade, Maryland, have been under the same four-star commander since Cyber Command’s creation in 2009.

But the Defense Department has been agitating for a separation, perceiving the NSA and intelligence community as resistant to more aggressive cyberwarfare, particularly after the Islamic State’s transformation in recent years from an obscure insurgent force into an organization holding significant territory across Iraq and Syria and with a worldwide recruiting network.

While the military wanted to attack IS networks, intelligence objectives prioritized gathering information from them, according to U.S. officials familiar with the debate. They weren’t authorized to discuss internal deliberations publicly and requested anonymity. (rtr)

DENPASAR — The meat traffic team consisting of Bali police criminal investigation unit as well as the Bali livestock and animal health agency conducted a search to Gilimanuk quarantine office on Sunday (Jul. 17). At that time, a total of 2 tons of chicken meat from Jombang, East Java, was denied from entering Bali.

He explained that procedure for importing meat before April 2017 should be equipped with technical recommendation of meat expenditure from the province of origin of the meat, veterinary control number and valid halal certificate, animal health certificate of animal-based product issued by authorized veterinarian from the district / province of origin.

In addition, according to Gubernatorial Regulation No. 36/2017 having been enforced from April 26, 2017, the imported meat must also enclose technical recommendation from Bali livestock and animal health agency. Since the enactment of the gubernatorial regulation, he recognized that more companies or business entities are looking for recommendation letter to import products to the Bali livestock and animal health agency. “It means that quarantine office has also required technical recommendation for the entry from the Bali livestock and animal health agency,” he said.

The presence of the quarantine office together with the Bali livestock and animal health agency is meant to oversee the meat product coming into Bali in order that Bali is safe from disease and free from infectious diseases resulting from the circulation of meat. The quarantine office is expected not to easily pass meat products from outside Bali.

“Weather greatly affects chili plants. When getting excessive water and hit by very hot sunlight at noon, the stems and fruits of the chili can perish and turn blackish,” said a local farmer, Wayan Sudanta, on Monday (Jul. 17).

According to Sudanta, the recent weather affects the development of chilies planted by farmers. If getting excessive water, chili plants are vulnerable to various disease or pest attack. So, this causes the stems to perish, while leaves and fruits become curl and are attacked by fungi. “Probably, weather factor causes this condition, before being worthy to be picked chilies has fallen out and the color changes into blackish so they cannot be sold,” said Sudanta.

In addition to being vulnerable to pest attack, the extreme weather occurred lately also affects the harvest yield obtained by farmers. By and large, on an area of 200 square meters, farmers can get two kilograms in once pick, but now they only get one kilogram. The amount of chilies picked is also not necessarily good because many of them are rotten. So, to anticipate greater losses, farmers are forced to do fertilization and spray pesticides continuously to prevent further attack of pests and fungi. “Without fertilization, the plants can die and the losses experienced will be greater,” he said.

In the meantime, the lack of supply from farmers causes the

price of chili in traditional markets to rise. This condition is seen at Galiran Market, Klungkung.

Chili price jumped to IDR 35,000 from IDR 20,000. According to a merchant, Ketut Daging, the condition takes place gradually. “Price increase has lasted gradually from five days ago,” he said.

He added that such a price surge happened due to the declining supply of farmers as the impact of bad weather. In addition to the price, the quality of chilies is also less good, many of which quickly rot. On that account, merchants choose to reduce stock.

Yingluck and her Puea Thai Party say the trial is politically motivated, aimed at discrediting a populist movement that has won every election since 2001.

Yingluck’s brother Thaksin Shinawatra first introduced the rice programmes before he himself was ousted in a 2006 coup.

But Yingluck took it a step further by offering to buy rice from farmers at up to 50 per cent above market prices.

The measure helped her sweep to power in the 2011 general election. But government losses from the scheme -- which also distorted global rice prices -- helped fuel protests that led to her removal from power days before the 2014 coup.

If found guilty, Yingluck like her brother Thaksin, would be disqualified from becoming premier again.

Thaksin has been living in self-imposed exile for 11 years to avoid serving a two-year sentence over a corrupt land deal.

That has left political circles guessing who would lead the party in the next election, scheduled for next year, and whether

that leader could possibly be someone outside the Shinawatra clan that has dominated the movement until now.

UNCHALLENGED IN NORTHEAST Farmers from the Shinawatra powerbase in the northeast told Reuters they would vote for the Puea Thai Party again in the next election.

“The Yingluck rice scheme made rice farmers prosperous from having a reliable income that came on time,” said Paisan Pachanda, 59, a rice farmer and co-operative leader in Khon Kaen, a major commercial hub that lies on a plateau in the centre of the northeast region.

“If there’s an election . . . people in the northeast will still vote for the Puea Thai Party, even if there is no Shinawatra in the party,” he said.

Even the rival Democrat Party concedes Puea Thai remains unchallenged in the Northeast.

A hardcore of gunmen were on Tuesday clinging on to positions in a deserted commercial heart, which has been reduced to rubble by a bombing campaign that has angered residents with no homes or businesses to return to.

Duterte has appointed a taskforce to rebuild Marawi, with a 20 billion peso ($394.81 million) budget.

How people view their role in this process and why they value certain principles over others informs how commerce is done, what is given value in this process and ultimately what people value about human interactions.

Turkish economic growth to fall short of gov’t forecast

ANKARA - Turkey’s economic growth this year will fall slightly short of the government’s forecast, a Reuters poll found, suggesting not all investor concerns following an April referendum giving President Tayyip Erdogan sweeping new powers have eased.

While growth forecasts are better than they were three months ago alongside a rising stock market and a more stable lira - projected growth rates are still well below half the expected inflation rate, suggesting not all is well.

On April 16, Turks voted by a thin margin to back constitutional changes to create an executive presidential system, in which Erdogan, the most popular but divisive leader in recent

Turkish politics, could remain in power until at least 2029.

The government has said the changes would boost growth as they will make it easier to push through reforms to labour and tax laws, but investors have voiced concern about Erdogan’s further consolidation of power and his grip on monetary policy.

“I think the drivers of growth – including rapid credit growth, loose

fiscal policy and a rebound in the tourism sector – are unlikely to last too long,” said William Jackson of London-based consultancy Capital Economics. “I suspect that GDP growth will probably peak in Q3, then slow sharply,” Jackson added.

Growth in 2017 is estimated at 3.9 percent, according to the poll of 41 economists, slightly below the government’s official forecast of 4.4 percent, but well above the

previous Reuters poll in April which predicted 2.6 percent. For 2018, growth is seen at 3.3 percent, the poll showed.

Widespread purges since last July’s coup attempt, in which some 150,000 people have been sacked or suspended from jobs in the civil service and private sector and more than 50,000 have been detained, have also alarmed rights groups and Turkey’s Western allies.

In the aftermath of the abortive putsch, the lira hit a series of record lows, and the economy saw a 1.3 percent contraction, with concerns

about the political situation also pushing up consumer prices. Both the lira and inflation have since shown signs of recovery.

After hitting a 8 1/2-year high just below 12 percent in April, Turkish inflation cooled in May and June, on a drop in food prices to a little under 11 percent increase in annual consumer prices.

The Reuters poll predicted inflation would remain high at 10 percent by end-year, not far below the current level. The lira has firmed somewhat from a record low of 3.94 against the U.S. dollar in January. (rtr)

Fare trade is a concept and practice that has emerged in recent decades in response to increasingly unfair trade practices worldwide.

WIthout getting into the historic details of how exploitative ways of engaging in trade became so widespread, it is perhaps sufficient to acknowledge that the valuing of profit at the expense of all else has led to the social, economic, environmental and health crisis that the world is facing today. Fare trade is a common sense response to an unsustainable state of affairs, offering guidelines for how to engage in commerce in a way that yields profits without endangering our very existence.

Although the novel Max Havelaar which tells of a dutch employee who leaves the exploitive company he works for to join forces with Indonesian workers, inspired one of the first Fare Trade companies that was established in 1988, today there are only 9 fare trade companies operating in Indonesia. In contrast, India has a total of 150 fair trade companies that have been bettering the lives of countless Indians.

Considering the enormous potential of Indonesia in general and Bali in particular, we might expect to see more companies here operating ac-

cording to fair trade principles, It should be added that cooperatives, which are increasingly widespread, tend to naturally function according to fair trade principles because of the high level of engagement that is required by all participating members, regardless of whether they operate under the umbrella of international Fare Trade standards or not.

Mitra Bali first began operating in 1993 and in 2000 became Indonesia’s first official fair trade company and in 2016 were finally authorized to use the international fair trade label. Mitra Bali remains the largest and most successful fair trade company in Indonesia. Mitra Bali’s founder Agung Alit, Marketing manager Hani Duarsa and designer Komang Adi recently spoke to a group of young entrepreneurs about the advantages and challenges of starting a fare trade enterprise.

Bali, said Agung Alit, is one of the worlds biggest producers of handicrafts and has direct access to a flourishing tourist market and yet, the vast majority of profits are still enjoyed by foreigners with both artisans and local entrepreneurs struggling to make ends meet.

This, he explained is due in part to generally unfair trade practices but

also to the large capital available to foreigners by way of their currencies and other systems that favour large scale industries. Mitra Bali has however been successful in curbing this tendency by applying the principles of fair trade and encouraging other to do the same.

Based on the values of empathy and solidarity, Mitra Bali and others have managed to generate substantial profits for themselves and the artisans who make their products allowing everyone to improve their lives. Of the 10 criteria that make this form of commerce fair, perhaps the most important he said is paying artisans 30% -50% upfront for the cost of their products. This allows producers to cover the cost of materials and basic living expenses so that they can continue to make their products and do so with dignity.

Focusing on artisans who are struggling to make ends meet has also been a priority that has yielded positive results. Designer Komang Adi explained that providing guidance to their producers in terms of design trends and how to translate distinctly local aesthetics into globally appealing products is key.

The production of new products needs to take into consideration 4 things: quality, uniqueness, avail-

ability of materials, and some kind of good feeling. Although fair trade products tend to cost slightly more than mass produced products or products made using exploitive practices, the market has shown that there is a demand for products made with integrity and that consumers value the story behind such products.

Another important element in their success explained Head of Marketing Bu Hani Duarsa has been keeping a close eye on which of their own products are selling and which are not and getting feedback from consumers regarding materials and design. Alongside this, they are also constantly doing market research by attending craft fairs and exploring other successful shops in order to stay on top of market trends.

Bu Hani explained that perseverance is also too often overlooked.

The downfall of many craft businesses, she said, is that they will present their products to a given market only once and if they do not get a positive response, they move on. She explained that when Mitra Bali first attended big craft exhibitions people barely even stopped to look at their products. The second year, some people browsed their wares but few purchased anything.

It was only the the third time that they attended, that distributors started to take serious interest. As she explained, buyers want to know that a company is in this business for the long hall, that they are not going to disappear after receiving their first order.

When asked how a group of young craft designers who are just

a starting out should position themselves in the market, Bu Hani said that the first step would be to gather products from artisans who are already producing goods, test these products on the market and then look into the long term availability of the materials that sell well. Once they have an idea of what kinds of products are marketable, only then should the designers start working with the artisans to create distinctive and innovative products.

GIven the time and energy needed to produce handy-crafts, artisans she said, have a much better chance of successfully reaching wider markets by joining forces with others who are dedicated to marketing and promoting their products in a fair and equitable manner. Individual craft producers, she said have a hard time reaching international markets in a way that positively affects their bottom line. For this reason, creating locally managed teams to produce, market and distribute goods is essential she explained, adding that it is important to remember that there is a substantial local market that should not be overlooked.

Adhering to all 10 fare trade criteria, said Bu Hani, requires a long term commitment and that reaching international markets poses its own set of challenges, however she also added that paying producers upfront, focusing on raw materials that are widely available and environmentally sustainable with locally distinct design features, and creating a company structure based on mutual respect and dignity for all are very good ways of ensuring long terms success. CALGARY - Canada was deploying military aircraft and Australia was sending 50 firefighters to battle rapidly spreading wildfires in British Columbia that have forced 39,000 people from their homes, federal Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale said on Monday.

Goodale told reporters the western Canadian province had made two requests of the federal government for military assistance to fight the fires, which he said were expected to worsen.

The military has sent two planes and five helicopters to help with evacuations and transportation for first responders, according to the Department of National Defence.

British Columbia chief fire information officer Kevin Skrepnek said in a conference call the Australians were due to arrive on Wednesday.

There were 159 fires across the province in an area between 150 km (95 miles) to 350 km (217 miles) northeast of Vancouver, including 17 new ones, although the total numbers were down slightly from 162 on Sunday, Skrepnek said. No casualties have been reported.

“In a few cases, it is because we had amalgamated some of these fires together,” he said. “But for the most part, that decrease in terms of the total fires burning is an indication of progress.”

Skrepnek said the area burned for the wildfire

season was estimated at 188,000 hectares (465,000 acres), costing the province C$90 million ($70.92 million) to handle.

British Columbia has announced C$100 million in emergency funds. The Canadian Red Cross will hand out stipends of C$600 for displaced people.

Forestry producers West Fraser Timber Co, Norbord Inc and privately held Tolko have suspended some operations.

Tolko said on Monday that many employees were forced from homes and that resources in the city of Kamloops, which has been taking in evacuees, may be overwhelmed.

Pipeline operator Enbridge Inc, which has taken a natural gas compressor station offline, said on Sunday it had no firm time line for restarting it.

Kevin Boon, general manager of the British Columbia Cattlemen’s Association, said 30,000 cattle were being threatened by the fire.

Boon said ranchers had been trying to move their cattle to safety and some had deployed water pumps.

The fire was not affecting prices beyond British Columbia, a relatively small producer, he said.

EnGold Mines Ltd has suspended exploration.

Imperial Metals Corp and Taseko Mines Ltd said separately on Monday they had suspended operations at mines in the area.

Justine Damond’s American fiance also wondered about the details of how she was shot. She had called the police to report a suspected sexual assault near her home, fiance Don Damond told reporters outside the home.

“We lost the dearest of people and we are desperate for information,” Damond said. “Piecing together Justine’s last moments before the homicide would be a small comfort as we grieve this tragedy.”

Also known as Justine Ruszczyk, she had already taken Damond’s last name.

Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Minnesota called for answers on why the two responding officers failed to turn on their body cameras when they arrived at Damond’s home in a quiet, uppermiddle-class neighborhood shortly before midnight on Saturday.

Police shot Damond, originally from Sydney, through the door of their patrol car as she approached them in an alley near her home, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported, citing three unnamed sources.

Minneapolis Police Chief Janee Harteau called Damond’s death “tragic” in a statement on Monday and promised a “transparent” investigation.

The officer who shot Damond was identified by the Minneapolis Star Tribune and other local media as Mohamed Noor.

Noor’s lawyer, Tom Plunkett, said in a statement that Noor extends his condolences to Damond’s family. The statement did not describe Noor’s role in the shooting, and authorities have not confirmed the identities of the officers involved.

“He came to the United States at a young age and is thankful to have had so many opportunities,” Plunkett said of Noor, who was previously described by the city as a native of Somalia.

“The current environment for police is difficult, but Officer Noor accepts this as part of his calling. We would like to say more and will in the future.”

Hundreds took to the streets of Minneapolis on Sunday to protest Damond’s shooting.

Indonesia parliament speaker denies any wrongdoing in ID-card programme

JAKARTA - The speaker of Indonesia’s parliament on Tuesday denied allegations that he helped cause big losses to the state in connection with the issuance of electronic national identity cards. Setya Novanto, chairman of Indonesia’s second-biggest political party, Golkar, made the denial to reporters after a meeting with leaders of the House of Representatives. The speaker said he read media reports saying he was named by the independent Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) as a suspect in the alleged state loss of at least 2.3 trillion rupiah ($173 million) from the identity-card programme.

It is also seen as crucial for Widodo’s drive to battle graft in the country that ranked 90th out of 176 in Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions index last year. The decision to designate Novanto, whose Golkar party is part of Widodo’s coalition, as a suspect is “a very positive sign”, said Keith Loveard, a Jakarta-based analyst at Concord Consulting.

“This most certainly demonstrates how tough the KPK is,” Loveard said, adding that Widodo is unlikely to get in the way of the KPK’s investigation in the e-KTP case. “While all the parties are virtually implicated, including the PDI-P, public

support for the KPK remains extremely high. So for him to attempt to slow the process or to create obstacles would be very damaging to his popularity,” Loveard added.

In late 2015, the parliament’s ethics committee launched a probe into allegations by a Freeport Indonesia executive that Novanto had tried to extort $1.8 billion worth of shares from the local unit of the U.S. mining company. Novanto denied the allegations but stepped down temporarily. He was reappointed as speaker a year later after he was cleared by the parliament’s ethics panel. (rtr)

Late on Monday, KPK Chairman Agus Rahardjo told reporters that a legislator with the initials “SN” was suspected to have abused his authority to benefit himself or others while the electronic identity card, known as e-KTP, was put in place in 2011 and 2012.

The KPK always refers to suspects by their initials and never confirms their full names. After Rahardjo’s statement, many Indonesian media named Novanto as the suspect the agency is investigating. On Tuesday, Novanto told reporters he would obey the legal process, but said he was “shocked” by the allegations and denied any wrongdoing.

“Whatever I’m accused of is not true,” he said. “If they say that I received funds, I’ve never done that. The sum of that money is incredibly huge. How was it transferred, how was it received?” The KPK has been investigating allegations that sums ranging from $5,000 to $5.5 million - money generated by marking up the costs of the e-KTP procurement - were divided up in a room in parliament.

LIPI warns of dangers of long-term use of chemical fertilizers

BOGOR - The Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) has warned of the dangers of using synthetic inorganic chemical fertilizers for a long time, which can destroy farm land.

“What worries us today is that Indonesian farmers only rely on synthetic inorganic chemical fertilizers, which are very dangerous in the long run,” LIPI biological researcher Sarjiya Antonius said, on the sidelines of ASEAN international conference on “Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) held here, on Monday.

If the use of chemical fertilizers goes unattended, it will

destroy farm land in the next 25 years, he said.

The use of synthetic inorganic chemical fertilizers by Indonesian farmers was one of the case studies discussed at a conference which brought together researchers, experts, and industrialists from 16 countries.

Antonious stated that LIPI has a program to educate farmers on how to apply PGPR technology from its biological laboratory to farmers in the field and from industries to regional governments.

“For instance, LIPI is developing biological organic fertilizer (POH) without exclusive license, so that the public and

industry, as users, can benefit from it,” he noted.

One of the companies which has benefited from PGPR technology is pineapple plantation company Great Giant Pineapple. Before applying the PGPR, the company saw its pineapple production falling every year.

The companys production, which initially reached 100 tons, has shrunk to the lowest level, he revealed.

“After applying the PGPR technology, the company has seen its production continue to increase to 80 tons. Hopefully, the production will return to 100 tons in two to three years time,” he concluded.(ant)

The idea to build the complex came about in the early 1990s, after the construction of several international-chain hotels in the enclave resort of Nusa Dua. The actual development of the ‘Hill of Prayer’, however, did not start until 1995, and coincided with the boom in Bali’s tourism industry.

During this upsurge, the need for places of worship for both visitors and migrant workers to the area was increasingly felt. Long renowned as a Hindu island in a sea of Muslims, Bali was rapidly becoming religiously cosmopolitan.

The Bali Tourism Development Corporation (BTDC), the owner of the Nusa Dua Resort complex, donated the land and the various religious communities shared the

development costs. It took around two years to build and was opened to the public with great ceremony in 1997.

In addition to being an expression of Indonesia’s religious tolerance, there are at least two practical reasons for the development of the complex. The first is related directly to tourists of different denominations requiring a place to pray, a pressing concern given the fact that Nusa Dua often hosts major international conferences that draw in visitors from just about everywhere. To match the profile of its hotels, Nusa Dua needed something of quality to satisfy the religious needs of an increasingly diverse visitor profile. The development of Puja Mandala was considered to be an ideal solution and in providing such diverse spiritual facilities Nusa Dua’s profile was raised as a

resort that catered for everybody, whatever their country of origin or religious persuasion.

The other reason is related to the Nusa Dua community itself.

The growth of Nusa Dua as tourism resort drew in large numbers of people who moved to live in the surrounding area, most of them working in tourism-related industry. Housing complexes have also mushroomed in the areas of Nusa Dua, the Bukit and Jimbaran to the south and west, and the religious needs of these migrants needed addressing.

These people not only reflected Indonesia’s religious diversity, but they also included expatriates who followed a variety of different faiths. Puja Mandala was built to satisfy both the needs of the resort’s diverse visitors and its equally varied migrant worker community. (IBP/net)

overlooking the sparkling sands of Sanur beach and the bustling harbour of Benoa.It is definitely worth a visit.

The idea to build the complex came about in the early 1990s, after the construction of several international-chain hotels in the enclave resort of Nusa Dua. The actual development of the ‘Hill of Prayer’, however, did not start until 1995, and coincided with the boom in Bali’s tourism industry.

During this upsurge, the need for places of worship for both visitors and migrant workers to the area was increasingly felt. Long renowned as a Hindu island in a sea of Muslims, Bali was rapidly becoming religiously cosmopolitan.

The Bali Tourism Development Corporation (BTDC), the owner of the Nusa Dua Resort complex, donated the land and the various religious communities shared the

development costs. It took around two years to build and was opened to the public with great ceremony in 1997.

In addition to being an expression of Indonesia’s religious tolerance, there are at least two practical reasons for the development of the complex. The first is related directly to tourists of different denominations requiring a place to pray, a pressing concern given the fact that Nusa Dua often hosts major international conferences that draw in visitors from just about everywhere. To match the profile of its hotels, Nusa Dua needed something of quality to satisfy the religious needs of an increasingly diverse visitor profile. The development of Puja Mandala was considered to be an ideal solution and in providing such diverse spiritual facilities Nusa Dua’s profile was raised as a

resort that catered for everybody, whatever their country of origin or religious persuasion.

The other reason is related to the Nusa Dua community itself.

The growth of Nusa Dua as tourism resort drew in large numbers of people who moved to live in the surrounding area, most of them working in tourism-related industry. Housing complexes have also mushroomed in the areas of Nusa Dua, the Bukit and Jimbaran to the south and west, and the religious needs of these migrants needed addressing.

These people not only reflected Indonesia’s religious diversity, but they also included expatriates who followed a variety of different faiths. Puja Mandala was built to satisfy both the needs of the resort’s diverse visitors and its equally varied migrant worker community. (IBP/net)

After avoiding disaster, Froome ready to tackle Alps in close Tour LE-PUY-EN-VELAY - After narrowly averting disaster in the Massif Central, Chris Froome believes he is ready for the final stretch of the Tour de France with a handful of rivals breathing down his neck.

LONDON - Wimbledon women’s champion Garbine Muguruza says she will savour her victory in order to prevent a similar slump in form to the one she suffered after winning the French Open in 2016.

The Spaniard earned her first grand slam at Roland Garros, beating Serena Williams in the final, but then meekly capitulated at Wimbledon to Jana Cepelova in the second round, also experiencing early elimination at the Rio Olympics and the US Open.

CALGARY - Canada was deploying military aircraft and Australia was sending 50 firefighters to battle rapidly spreading wildfires in British Columbia that have forced 39,000 people from their homes, federal Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale said on Monday.

Goodale told reporters the western Canadian province had made two requests of the federal government for military assistance to fight the fires, which he said were expected to worsen.

The military has sent two planes and five helicopters to help with evacuations and transportation for first responders, according to the Department of National Defence.

British Columbia chief fire information officer Kevin Skrepnek said in a conference call the Australians were due to arrive on Wednesday.

There were 159 fires across the province in an area between 150 km (95 miles) to 350 km (217 miles) northeast of Vancouver, including 17 new ones, although the total numbers were down slightly from 162 on Sunday, Skrepnek said. No casualties have been reported.

“In a few cases, it is because we had amalgamated some of these fires together,” he said. “But for the most part, that decrease in terms of the total fires burning is an indication of progress.”

Skrepnek said the area burned for the wildfire

season was estimated at 188,000 hectares (465,000 acres), costing the province C$90 million ($70.92 million) to handle.

British Columbia has announced C$100 million in emergency funds. The Canadian Red Cross will hand out stipends of C$600 for displaced people.

Forestry producers West Fraser Timber Co, Norbord Inc and privately held Tolko have suspended some operations.

Tolko said on Monday that many employees were forced from homes and that resources in the city of Kamloops, which has been taking in evacuees, may be overwhelmed.

Pipeline operator Enbridge Inc, which has taken a natural gas compressor station offline, said on Sunday it had no firm time line for restarting it.

Kevin Boon, general manager of the British Columbia Cattlemen’s Association, said 30,000 cattle were being threatened by the fire.

Boon said ranchers had been trying to move their cattle to safety and some had deployed water pumps.

The fire was not affecting prices beyond British Columbia, a relatively small producer, he said.

EnGold Mines Ltd has suspended exploration.

Imperial Metals Corp and Taseko Mines Ltd said separately on Monday they had suspended operations at mines in the area.

Justine Damond’s American fiance also wondered about the details of how she was shot. She had called the police to report a suspected sexual assault near her home, fiance Don Damond told reporters outside the home.

“We lost the dearest of people and we are desperate for information,” Damond said. “Piecing together Justine’s last moments before the homicide would be a small comfort as we grieve this tragedy.”

Also known as Justine Ruszczyk, she had already taken Damond’s last name.

Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Minnesota called for answers on why the two responding officers failed to turn on their body cameras when they arrived at Damond’s home in a quiet, uppermiddle-class neighborhood shortly before midnight on Saturday.

Police shot Damond, originally from Sydney, through the door of their patrol car as she approached them in an alley near her home, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported, citing three unnamed sources.

Minneapolis Police Chief Janee Harteau called Damond’s death “tragic” in a statement on Monday and promised a “transparent” investigation.

told reporters in Sydney on Tuesday that her death was “our worst nightmare”.

Noor’s lawyer, Tom Plunkett, said in a statement that Noor extends his condolences to Damond’s family. The statement did not describe Noor’s role in the shooting, and authorities have not confirmed the identities of the officers involved.

“He came to the United States at a young age and is thankful to have had so many opportunities,” Plunkett said of Noor, who was previously described by the city as a native of Somalia.

“The current environment for police is difficult, but Officer Noor accepts this as part of his calling. We would like to say more and will in the future.”

Hundreds took to the streets of Minneapolis on Sunday to protest Damond’s shooting.

The state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), which reviews shootings involving the police in Minneapolis, said the dashboard camera in the officers’ patrol car did not capture the shooting. The BCA is seeking any civilian video of the incident. (rtr)

Indonesia parliament speaker denies any wrongdoing in ID-card programme

JAKARTA - The speaker of Indonesia’s parliament on Tuesday denied allegations that he helped cause big losses to the state in connection with the issuance of electronic national identity cards. Setya Novanto, chairman of Indonesia’s second-biggest political party, Golkar, made the denial to reporters after a meeting with leaders of the House of Representatives. The speaker said he read media reports saying he was named by the independent Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) as a suspect in the alleged state loss of at least 2.3 trillion rupiah ($173 million) from the identity-card programme.

It is also seen as crucial for Widodo’s drive to battle graft in the country that ranked 90th out of 176 in Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions index last year. The decision to designate Novanto, whose Golkar party is part of Widodo’s coalition, as a suspect is “a very positive sign”, said Keith Loveard, a Jakarta-based analyst at Concord Consulting.

“This most certainly demonstrates how tough the KPK is,” Loveard said, adding that Widodo is unlikely to get in the way of the KPK’s investigation in the e-KTP case. “While all the parties are virtually implicated, including the PDI-P, public

support for the KPK remains extremely high. So for him to attempt to slow the process or to create obstacles would be very damaging to his popularity,” Loveard added.

In late 2015, the parliament’s ethics committee launched a probe into allegations by a Freeport Indonesia executive that Novanto had tried to extort $1.8 billion worth of shares from the local unit of the U.S. mining company. Novanto denied the allegations but stepped down temporarily. He was reappointed as speaker a year later after he was cleared by the parliament’s ethics panel. (rtr)

Late on Monday, KPK Chairman Agus Rahardjo told reporters that a legislator with the initials “SN” was suspected to have abused his authority to benefit himself or others while the electronic identity card, known as e-KTP, was put in place in 2011 and 2012.

The KPK always refers to suspects by their initials and never confirms their full names. After Rahardjo’s statement, many Indonesian media named Novanto as the suspect the agency is investigating. On Tuesday, Novanto told reporters he would obey the legal process, but said he was “shocked” by the allegations and denied any wrongdoing.

“Whatever I’m accused of is not true,” he said. “If they say that I received funds, I’ve never done that. The sum of that money is incredibly huge. How was it transferred, how was it received?” The KPK has been investigating allegations that sums ranging from $5,000 to $5.5 million - money generated by marking up the costs of the e-KTP procurement - were divided up in a room in parliament.

LIPI warns of dangers of long-term use of chemical fertilizers

BOGOR - The Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) has warned of the dangers of using synthetic inorganic chemical fertilizers for a long time, which can destroy farm land.

“What worries us today is that Indonesian farmers only rely on synthetic inorganic chemical fertilizers, which are very dangerous in the long run,” LIPI biological researcher Sarjiya Antonius said, on the sidelines of ASEAN international conference on “Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) held here, on Monday.

If the use of chemical fertilizers goes unattended, it will

destroy farm land in the next 25 years, he said.

The use of synthetic inorganic chemical fertilizers by Indonesian farmers was one of the case studies discussed at a conference which brought together researchers, experts, and industrialists from 16 countries.

Antonious stated that LIPI has a program to educate farmers on how to apply PGPR technology from its biological laboratory to farmers in the field and from industries to regional governments.

“For instance, LIPI is developing biological organic fertilizer (POH) without exclusive license, so that the public and

industry, as users, can benefit from it,” he noted.

One of the companies which has benefited from PGPR technology is pineapple plantation company Great Giant Pineapple. Before applying the PGPR, the company saw its pineapple production falling every year.

The companys production, which initially reached 100 tons, has shrunk to the lowest level, he revealed.

“After applying the PGPR technology, the company has seen its production continue to increase to 80 tons. Hopefully, the production will return to 100 tons in two to three years time,” he concluded.(ant)

Turkish economic growth to fall short of gov’t forecast

ANKARA - Turkey’s economic growth this year will fall slightly short of the government’s forecast, a Reuters poll found, suggesting not all investor concerns following an April referendum giving President Tayyip Erdogan sweeping new powers have eased.

While growth forecasts are better than they were three months ago alongside a rising stock market and a more stable lira - projected growth rates are still well below half the expected inflation rate, suggesting not all is well.

On April 16, Turks voted by a thin margin to back constitutional changes to create an executive presidential system, in which Erdogan, the most popular but divisive leader in recent

Turkish politics, could remain in power until at least 2029.

The government has said the changes would boost growth as they will make it easier to push through reforms to labour and tax laws, but investors have voiced concern about Erdogan’s further consolidation of power and his grip on monetary policy.

“I think the drivers of growth – including rapid credit growth, loose

fiscal policy and a rebound in the tourism sector – are unlikely to last too long,” said William Jackson of London-based consultancy Capital Economics. “I suspect that GDP growth will probably peak in Q3, then slow sharply,” Jackson added.

Growth in 2017 is estimated at 3.9 percent, according to the poll of 41 economists, slightly below the government’s official forecast of 4.4 percent, but well above the

previous Reuters poll in April which predicted 2.6 percent. For 2018, growth is seen at 3.3 percent, the poll showed.

Widespread purges since last July’s coup attempt, in which some 150,000 people have been sacked or suspended from jobs in the civil service and private sector and more than 50,000 have been detained, have also alarmed rights groups and Turkey’s Western allies.

In the aftermath of the abortive putsch, the lira hit a series of record lows, and the economy saw a 1.3 percent contraction, with concerns

about the political situation also pushing up consumer prices. Both the lira and inflation have since shown signs of recovery.

After hitting a 8 1/2-year high just below 12 percent in April, Turkish inflation cooled in May and June, on a drop in food prices to a little under 11 percent increase in annual consumer prices.

The Reuters poll predicted inflation would remain high at 10 percent by end-year, not far below the current level. The lira has firmed somewhat from a record low of 3.94 against the U.S. dollar in January. (rtr)

WIthout getting into the historic details of how exploitative ways of engaging in trade became so widespread, it is perhaps sufficient to acknowledge that the valuing of profit at the expense of all else has led to the social, economic, environmental and health crisis that the world is facing today. Fare trade is a common sense response to an unsustainable state of affairs, offering guidelines for how to engage in commerce in a way that yields profits without endangering our very existence.

Although the novel Max Havelaar which tells of a dutch employee who leaves the exploitive company he works for to join forces with Indonesian workers, inspired one of the first Fare Trade companies that was established in 1988, today there are only 9 fare trade companies operating in Indonesia. In contrast, India has a total of 150 fair trade companies that have been bettering the lives of countless Indians.

Considering the enormous potential of Indonesia in general and Bali in particular, we might expect to see more companies here operating ac-

cording to fair trade principles, It should be added that cooperatives, which are increasingly widespread, tend to naturally function according to fair trade principles because of the high level of engagement that is required by all participating members, regardless of whether they operate under the umbrella of international Fare Trade standards or not.

Mitra Bali first began operating in 1993 and in 2000 became Indonesia’s first official fair trade company and in 2016 were finally authorized to use the international fair trade label. Mitra Bali remains the largest and most successful fair trade company in Indonesia. Mitra Bali’s founder Agung Alit, Marketing manager Hani Duarsa and designer Komang Adi recently spoke to a group of young entrepreneurs about the advantages and challenges of starting a fare trade enterprise.

Bali, said Agung Alit, is one of the worlds biggest producers of handicrafts and has direct access to a flourishing tourist market and yet, the vast majority of profits are still enjoyed by foreigners with both artisans and local entrepreneurs struggling to make ends meet.

This, he explained is due in part to generally unfair trade practices but

also to the large capital available to foreigners by way of their currencies and other systems that favour large scale industries. Mitra Bali has however been successful in curbing this tendency by applying the principles of fair trade and encouraging other to do the same.

Based on the values of empathy and solidarity, Mitra Bali and others have managed to generate substantial profits for themselves and the artisans who make their products allowing everyone to improve their lives. Of the 10 criteria that make this form of commerce fair, perhaps the most important he said is paying artisans 30% -50% upfront for the cost of their products. This allows producers to cover the cost of materials and basic living expenses so that they can continue to make their products and do so with dignity.

Focusing on artisans who are struggling to make ends meet has also been a priority that has yielded positive results. Designer Komang Adi explained that providing guidance to their producers in terms of design trends and how to translate distinctly local aesthetics into globally appealing products is key.

The production of new products needs to take into consideration 4 things: quality, uniqueness, avail-

ability of materials, and some kind of good feeling. Although fair trade products tend to cost slightly more than mass produced products or products made using exploitive practices, the market has shown that there is a demand for products made with integrity and that consumers value the story behind such products.

Another important element in their success explained Head of Marketing Bu Hani Duarsa has been keeping a close eye on which of their own products are selling and which are not and getting feedback from consumers regarding materials and design. Alongside this, they are also constantly doing market research by attending craft fairs and exploring other successful shops in order to stay on top of market trends.

Bu Hani explained that perseverance is also too often overlooked.

The downfall of many craft businesses, she said, is that they will present their products to a given market only once and if they do not get a positive response, they move on. She explained that when Mitra Bali first attended big craft exhibitions people barely even stopped to look at their products. The second year, some people browsed their wares but few purchased anything.

It was only the the third time that they attended, that distributors started to take serious interest. As she explained, buyers want to know that a company is in this business for the long hall, that they are not going to disappear after receiving their first order.

When asked how a group of young craft designers who are just

a starting out should position themselves in the market, Bu Hani said that the first step would be to gather products from artisans who are already producing goods, test these products on the market and then look into the long term availability of the materials that sell well. Once they have an idea of what kinds of products are marketable, only then should the designers start working with the artisans to create distinctive and innovative products.

GIven the time and energy needed to produce handy-crafts, artisans she said, have a much better chance of successfully reaching wider markets by joining forces with others who are dedicated to marketing and promoting their products in a fair and equitable manner. Individual craft producers, she said have a hard time reaching international markets in a way that positively affects their bottom line. For this reason, creating locally managed teams to produce, market and distribute goods is essential she explained, adding that it is important to remember that there is a substantial local market that should not be overlooked.

Adhering to all 10 fare trade criteria, said Bu Hani, requires a long term commitment and that reaching international markets poses its own set of challenges, however she also added that paying producers upfront, focusing on raw materials that are widely available and environmentally sustainable with locally distinct design features, and creating a company structure based on mutual respect and dignity for all are very good ways of ensuring long terms success. DENPASAR — The meat traffic team consisting of Bali police criminal investigation unit as well as the Bali livestock and animal health agency conducted a search to Gilimanuk quarantine office on Sunday (Jul. 17). At that time, a total of 2 tons of chicken meat from Jombang, East Java, was denied from entering Bali.

Having been coordinated with the Denpasar quarantine office, the chicken meat was then rejected. “So, the meat is returned to Java. Since the quarantine office imposed detention, rejection or annihilation, the meat was denied from entering Bali,” he explained.

He explained that procedure for importing meat before April 2017 should be equipped with technical recommendation of meat expenditure from the province of origin of the meat, veterinary control number and valid halal certificate, animal health certificate of animal-based product issued by authorized veterinarian from the district / province of origin.

In addition, according to Gubernatorial Regulation No. 36/2017 having been enforced from April 26, 2017, the imported meat must also enclose technical recommendation from Bali livestock and animal health agency. Since the enactment of the gubernatorial regulation, he recognized that more companies or business entities are looking for recommendation letter to import products to the Bali livestock and animal health agency. “It means that quarantine office has also required technical recommendation for the entry from the Bali livestock and animal health agency,” he said.

The presence of the quarantine office together with the Bali livestock and animal health agency is meant to oversee the meat product coming into Bali in order that Bali is safe from disease and free from infectious diseases resulting from the circulation of meat. The quarantine office is expected not to easily pass meat products from outside Bali.

Nata added that Bali and Java are single unity. “When prices in Bali are expensive, in fact, the meat traffic goes to Java. Well, in the movement of meat product from Java to Bali or vice versa, quarantine office plays a very strategic role to keep these two provinces safe,” he concluded. (kmb42)

“Weather greatly affects chili plants. When getting excessive water and hit by very hot sunlight at noon, the stems and fruits of the chili can perish and turn blackish,” said a local farmer, Wayan Sudanta, on Monday (Jul. 17).

According to Sudanta, the recent weather affects the development of chilies planted by farmers. If getting excessive water, chili plants are vulnerable to various disease or pest attack. So, this causes the stems to perish, while leaves and fruits become curl and are attacked by fungi. “Probably, weather factor causes this condition, before being worthy to be picked chilies has fallen out and the color changes into blackish so they cannot be sold,” said Sudanta.

In addition to being vulnerable to pest attack, the extreme weather occurred lately also affects the harvest yield obtained by farmers. By and large, on an area of 200 square meters, farmers can get two kilograms in once pick, but now they only get one kilogram. The amount of chilies picked is also not necessarily good because many of them are rotten. So, to anticipate greater losses, farmers are forced to do fertilization and spray pesticides continuously to prevent further attack of pests and fungi. “Without fertilization, the plants can die and the losses experienced will be greater,” he said.

In the meantime, the lack of supply from farmers causes the

price of chili in traditional markets to rise. This condition is seen at Galiran Market, Klungkung.

Chili price jumped to IDR 35,000 from IDR 20,000. According to a merchant, Ketut Daging, the condition takes place gradually. “Price increase has lasted gradually from five days ago,” he said.

He added that such a price surge happened due to the declining supply of farmers as the impact of bad weather. In addition to the price, the quality of chilies is also less good, many of which quickly rot. On that account, merchants choose to reduce stock.

“Due to this kind of weather, the supply goes down. Besides, the quality is less good,” he said. (kmb)

Yingluck and her Puea Thai Party say the trial is politically motivated, aimed at discrediting a populist movement that has won every election since 2001.

Yingluck’s brother Thaksin Shinawatra first introduced the rice programmes before he himself was ousted in a 2006 coup.

But Yingluck took it a step further by offering to buy rice from farmers at up to 50 per cent above market prices.

The measure helped her sweep to power in the 2011 general election. But government losses from the scheme -- which also distorted global rice prices -- helped fuel protests that led to her removal from power days before the 2014 coup.

If found guilty, Yingluck like her brother Thaksin, would be disqualified from becoming premier again.

Thaksin has been living in self-imposed exile for 11 years to avoid serving a two-year sentence over a corrupt land deal.

That has left political circles guessing who would lead the party in the next election, scheduled for next year, and whether

that leader could possibly be someone outside the Shinawatra clan that has dominated the movement until now.

UNCHALLENGED IN NORTHEAST Farmers from the Shinawatra powerbase in the northeast told Reuters they would vote for the Puea Thai Party again in the next election.

“The Yingluck rice scheme made rice farmers prosperous from having a reliable income that came on time,” said Paisan Pachanda, 59, a rice farmer and co-operative leader in Khon Kaen, a major commercial hub that lies on a plateau in the centre of the northeast region.

“If there’s an election . . . people in the northeast will still vote for the Puea Thai Party, even if there is no Shinawatra in the party,” he said.

Even the rival Democrat Party concedes Puea Thai remains unchallenged in the Northeast.

Robocar, the world’s first AI-powered, self-driving electric racer

2017 is set to be the year of driverless technology, with auto giants such as Ford and Audi making huge financial commitments in the field of motoring AI. But while both firms will be hoping to take the ‘car of the future’ title, that seemingly belongs to this beast of a vehicle from Roborace.

Called Robocar, the racer was unveiled at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, by Denis Sverdlov, CEO of Roborace and Charge, and Daniel Simon, the car’s designer. Sverdlov emphasised that the development of autonomous racing vehicles was a way to create “an emotional connection to driverless cars and bring humans and robots closer together to define our future.”

Robocar was developed in a little under a year but has an array of impressive technological features that

take advantage of the Nvidia’s Drive PX2 brain - the open AI car computing platform capable of 24 trillion AI operations per second. The car is powered by five LiDAR sensors; 18 ultrasonic sensors; six AI cameras and GNSS positioning, and it reaches speeds of 199mph (320kph). This entire system uses deep learning for 360-degree situational awareness around the car, working to determine precisely where the car is and to create its trajectory.

The futuristic design is no surprise, given that Daniel Simon regularly creates vehicles for Hollywood sci-fi movies. If you’ve seen Tron Legacy or Oblivion, you’ve already experienced a small part of Simon’s vision for Robocar’s autonomy. From the low centre of gravity typical of F1 vehicles to a body made predominantly from carbon fibre, the Robocar is said to be “a racing car with a technological edge.” (IBP/net)

Construction of the sidewalk along Jalan Kubu Anyar is expected to be completed in December. This development, said Surya Suamba, is in line with the density of traffic in Kuta. This dense and crowded highway is often used by pedestrians, especially school students. Unfortunately, the road is now starting to be crowded by vehicles.

However, he asserted that the construction of a special path for pedestrians will not necessarily able to eliminate congestion occurred in the region. Construction of this sidewalk is to provide comfort for pedestrians, chiefly school children along the Jalan Kubu Anyar. “Hopefully, this special pedestrian path could provide comfort for the local community,” he hoped. US to create independent military cyber command

WASHINGTON — After months of delay, the Trump administration is finalizing plans to revamp the nation’s military command for defensive and offensive cyber operations in hopes of intensifying America’s ability to wage cyberwar against the Islamic State group and other foes, according to U.S. officials.

Under the plans, U.S. Cyber Command would eventually be split off from the intelligencefocused National Security Agency.

Details are still being worked out, but officials say they expect a decision and announcement in the coming weeks. The officials weren’t authorized to speak publicly on the matter so requested anonymity.

The goal, they said, is to give U.S. Cyber Command more autonomy, freeing it from any constraints that stem from working alongside the NSA, which is responsible for monitoring and collecting telephone, internet and other intelligence data from around the world — a responsibility that can sometimes clash with military operations against enemy forces.

Making cyber an independent military command will put the fight in digital space on the same footing as more traditional realms of battle on land, in the air, at sea and in space. The move reflects the escalating threat of cyberattacks and intrusions from other nation states, terrorist groups and hackers, and comes as the U.S. faces everwidening fears about Russian hacking following Moscow’s efforts to meddle in the 2016 American election.

The U.S. has long operated quietly in cyberspace, using it to collect information, disrupt enemy networks and aid conventional

military missions. But as other nations and foes expand their use of cyberspying and attacks, the U.S. is determined to improve its ability to incorporate cyber operations into its everyday warfighting.

Experts said the command will need time to find its footing.

“Right now I think it’s inevitable, but it’s on a very slow glide path,” said Jim Lewis, a cybersecurity expert with the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

But, he added, “A new entity is not going to be able to duplicate NSA’s capabilities.”

The NSA, for examples, has 300 of the country’s leading mathematicians “and a gigantic super computer,” Lewis said. “Things like this are hard to duplicate.”

He added, however, that over time, the U.S. has increasingly used cyber as a tactical weapon, bolstering the argument for separating it from the NSA. The two highly secretive organizations, based at Fort Meade, Maryland, have been under the same four-star commander since Cyber Command’s creation in 2009.

But the Defense Department has been agitating for a separation, perceiving the NSA and intelligence community as resistant to more aggressive cyberwarfare, particularly after the Islamic State’s transformation in recent years from an obscure insurgent force into an organization holding significant territory across Iraq and Syria and with a worldwide recruiting network.

While the military wanted to attack IS networks, intelligence objectives prioritized gathering information from them, according to U.S. officials familiar with the debate. They weren’t authorized to discuss internal deliberations publicly and requested anonymity. (rtr)

High waves, skippers ignore Pier II AMLAPURA - Pier II of Padangbai Harbor often does not work during bad weather like last week.

Indeed, it is not functioned, not due to the jetty protruding into the sea is damaged, but deliberately ignored by skippers because they do not want to get a claim of compensation. There is a rule where any damages to the dock if crashed by ship becomes the responsibility of the ship concerned.

Such dilemmatic condition happening during bad weather condition was recognized by supervisor of PT ASDP Padangbai, Faizal.

Fast wind and big waves remaining to occur until Sunday (Jul. 16) is quite disturbing the docking process of ship at Pier II. Skippers that do not want to be imposed with compensation claim preferred to dock at pier I so that resulted in late loading and unloading process.

“Position of Pier II is rather jutting into the middle of the water. Strong winds triggering waves make it difficult for ships dock at Pier II,” he said.

In the meantime, based on information from the national weather service (BMKG) for region III Denpasar stated that high wave in the middle of the southern waters of Lombok Strait ranged from 1 to 3.5 meters. In the northern waters of Lombok Strait becoming the ferry route of Padangbai-Lembar, the wave height reached between

0.5 and 2 meters. By the sea waves, it is relatively safe for the voyage.

The only constraint only happens in the coastal areas as being hit by big waves due to strong wind.

During the occurrence of bad weather in the past week, the option of skippers to dock is only at Pier II. Unavoidably, it triggered the density and long line of vehicles at Padangbai. In addition to triggering disappointment to prospective passengers, such condition also reaped protests of passenger because the loading and unloading process from Lembar to Padangbai took longer travel time.

DENPASAR - ‘Sanur Mostly Jazz Festival’ to be made into an annual agenda wants to contribute in the field of music education and jazz musician regeneration. The originator of the Sanur Mostly Jazz, Indra Lesmana, said that in addition to presenting quality coastal jazz festival packaging, it also puts emphasis on the importance of education, especially at an early age. “In the future, we will equip with workshop and master class from the musicians making performance at this festival,” said Indra on Monday (Jul. 17).

The last day’s performance is considered special because it was the first time for a jazz concert staged in the morning before sunrise. Indra Lesmana (piano, seaboard) presented the repertoire of ‘Surya Sewana’ supported by musicians Indra Gupta (bass), Sandy Winarta (drum, cymbal), Dewa Budjana (guitar), Tina (vocal), Christie (sequencer) and accompanied with gamelan players by Subandi, Made Soplo, Gung Adhi, Emon Bandy, Ngurah Evo and Pacet.

Taking place on Sanur Beach, this jazz festival also included the no less important event namely the action of environmental care. The last day was filled in with a beach clean-up by involving students at Sanur and the release of turtle hatchlings by musicians and spectators. (kmb23)

Exchanging artistic visions and practices

Bali and Australia have a close relationship that is presently dominated by tourism, however given their geographic proximity we can easily imagine that this relationship in fact dates back hundreds if not tens of thousands of years.

As part of Australia’s Aboriginal Week celebrations (NAIDOC), the Australian Embassy in Jakarta, The Australian Consulate in Bali and Bentara Budaya Bali, organized an artistic collaboration between renown and accomplished Australian Aboriginal artist Jandamarra Cadd and Komunitas Djamur, a Denpasar based street art community.

This collaboration involved Jandamarra Cadd sharing art techniques with young Balinese artists but perhaps more importantly, exchanging visual stories about Aboriginal and Balinese symbols and myths. This exchange also involved Jandamarra Cadd and an artist from Komunitas Djamur creating a mural together in which two mythical creatures from Bali and Australia respectively share the space of the single art work.

As Jandamarra Cadd explained: “this collaboration really touched by heart because I know that our ancestors must have been sharing ideas for a very very long time, so i feel honoured to be able to continue this tradition”. Balinese artist Sang Anonim expressed similar feelings saying: “this project was really special because even though we do not speak the same language, art allowed us to connect deeply about the traditional cultures that inform our work”.

The sea turtle served as the icon

for this project representing the transnational oceanic space that these two people’s have been sharing since time immemorial. Animals were also a dominant theme as a reminder of the deeply rooted respect that both of theses cultures have for the natural environment and their place in it.

The didgeridoo is a traditional wind instrument from Australia that has also contributed to building ties with Bali. Traditionally, the long tube of the didgeridoo was created by ants eating out the centre of a certain type of Australian wood.

However, as this instrument has gained popularity worldwide, the ants can no longer meet the demand for these instruments. Woodworkers in Tegallalang have taken up the slack for the ants by becoming producers of this unique instrument.

Local bamboo crafter, instrument maker and performer Rizal is best known for having created his own unique instrument known as the Rasendryia, a bamboo instrument that combines guitar, percussion and digeridoo in a single instrument. Rizal has teamed up with the digeridoo producers of Tegallalang to offer a 3 day workshop (July 24-26) at Omah Apik in Pejeng, exploring the history, techniques and healing potential of this Australian instrument from the perspective of an Indonesian artist.

BERLIN - Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron said she hoped to even the playing field in the male-dominated spy film genre with her latest role as a deadly agent in action-thriller movie “Atomic Blonde.”

“I saw potential in this character,” Theron, 41, told Reuters at the Berlin premiere of “Atomic Blonde” on Monday.

“I wanted to explore a woman in this world and have her kind of play with the same set of rules that men get to play in,” added the actress, who won an Academy Award for her role as a serial killer in the 2003 film “Monster.”

“Atomic Blonde,” based on Antony Johnston’s graphic novel series “The Coldest City” and out in theaters on July 28, follows MI6’s lethal bisexual assassin Lorraine Broughton (Theron) in Berlin in 1989. Broughton is on a mission to recover a list of double agents, in a city simmering with revolution and double-crossing hives of traitors.

Spy movies have been dominated by male leads, such as the “James Bond,” “Mission Impossible” and

“Bourne” franchise.

Theron, who shows off her physical fighting prowess in the role, said “the skill of this was definitely a challenge. I wanted people to believe that she was that good.”

Actress Sofia Boutella, who plays spy Delphine Lasalle, the love interest of Theron’s character, said she was “a bit nervous at first” when filming a sex scene with Theron, but that the actress helped her relax.

“She made me feel very comfortable and she made me laugh. She just guided me through it in a very easy way. She was lovely and fun to work with,” Boutella said. Jay-Z’s “4:44” finally makes it to Billboard 200 chart -at No. 1

LOS ANGELES - Jay-Z’s new confessional and political release, “4:44,” finally entered the Billboard 200 album chart, storming to the top spot and scoring his 14th No. 1 release.

The rapper and producer sold 262,000 units of “4:44,” according to data from Nielsen SoundScan on Monday, to earn the fourthhighest one-week album sales total of 2017.

The album, on which Jay-Z admits cheating on his wife Beyonce and addresses the birth last month

of their twins, was released on June 30 as a one-week exclusive to members of his streaming platform Tidal and customers of wireless carrier Sprint Corp.

Despite being certified platinum in its first week, “4:44” was absent from last week’s Billboard 200 album chart because Tidal did not report numbers to Nielsen Music.

The Billboard 200 album chart tallies units from album sales, song sales (10 songs equal one album) and streaming activity

(1,500 streams equal one album).

Jay-Z already holds the record as the most successful solo artist on the Billboard 200 chart. His 14 albums debuting at No. 1 beats tallies by Bruce Springsteen and Barbra Streisand, Billboard said.

However, despite the critical praise and publicity for “4:44,” Nielsen-reported sales were well below the 2017 debuts of rapper Kendrick Lamar’s “DAMN.”, with 603,000 units, Drake’s “More Life” and British singer Ed Sheeran’s “Divide.” (rtr)

MADRID — Spanish Football Federation president Angel Maria Villar was arrested along with his son and two more federation executives in an anti-corruption investigation on Tuesday.

Villar, who is FIFA’s senior vice president and a UEFA vice president, was suspected of having arranged matches for Spain that led to business deals that benefited his son, said the office of the state prosecutor in charge of anti-corruption.

The state prosecutor and Spanish police said Villar, his son Gorka Villar, and two other soccer officials were detained while raids were carried out at the federation headquarters and other properties.

Two uniformed policemen guarded the entrance to the federation as staff went in and out of the offices near the training grounds for Spain’s national teams in Las Rozas, just outside Madrid. The other two men who were arrested were Juan Padron, the federation’s vice president of economic affairs who is also the president of the regional federation for Tenerife, and Ramon Hernandez, the secretary of that regional federation.

The four men were arrested on charges of improper management, misappropriation of funds, corruption and falsifying documents as part of a probe into the finances of the federations. “We have taken note of the media reports concerning the situation of Mr. Villar Llona,” FIFA said in a statement.

“As the matter seems to be linked to internal affairs of the Spanish Football Association, for the time being we kindly refer you to them for further details.”

As part of an operation called “Soule,” the Guardia Civil’s said it raided the national federation’s headquarters, the offices of the regional soccer federation on the is-

land of Tenerife, and “headquarters of businesses and several private homes linked to the arrested individuals.” Police started the probe in early 2016 after a complaint was made by Spain’s Higher Council of Sport, the government’s sports authority.

The probe led the state prosecutor’s office to suspect that Angel Maria Villar “could have arranged matches of the Spanish national team with other national teams, thereby gaining in return contracts for services and other business ventures in benefit of his son.” The prosecutor’s office said they suspect that Padron and the Tenerife secretary “favored the contracting of busi-

ness” for their personal benefit.

Inigo Mendez de Vigo, Spain’s minister of education, culture and sport, told national television moments after the raids that “in Spain the laws are enforced, the laws are the same for all, and nobody, nobody is above the law.” Calls made by The Associated Press to the Spanish and Tenerife federations went unanswered.

UEFA said in a statement it was “aware of the reports regarding Mr. Villar Llona. We have no comment to make at this time.” The Higher Council of Sport said it will “use everything in its means to ensure that competitions are not affected” by the arrests.

A former professional football player, the 67-year-old Villar has been the head of Spain’s soccer federation since 1988, overseeing its national team’s victories in the 2010 World Cup and the 2008 and

2012 European Championships.

Villar has also been at the heart of FIFA and UEFA politics since the 1990s, and has worked closely with several international soccer leaders who have since been indicted by the U.S. Department of Justice.

His son, Gorka, worked in recent years for South American body CONMEBOL as legal director then as the CEO-like director general for three presidents who were implicated in the American federal investigation. Gorka Villar left CONMEBOL in July 2016.
