LOS ANGELES — Like the vampires it portrays, “True Blood” won’t seem to die. Even if it means breaking out in song. After the final scene of the upcoming last season of “True Blood,” fans may be able to take another fresh bite out of the HBO vampire drama.

“I think we’re really going to try to return to the roots of the show,” Barr commented.

“True Blood” co-star Stephen Moyer, who showed off his vocal chops last year on NBC’s highly rated live telecast of “The Sound of Music,” revealed he helped Barr put together some samples of the “True Blood” musical presented to HBO and Ball.

Barr said he hopes to present a workshop version about a year from now, but he’s not looking beyond that. To say this is “Broadway bound” is premature.

“There’s no guarantees,” the composer warned. “But I think the direction we’re heading in is really exciting.”

In the works: “’True Blood’: The Musical.” Seriously.

“This was something that I pitched to HBO and (show creator) Alan Ball,” said composer Nathan Barr, speaking on the arrivals line at the “True Blood” season premiere Tuesday night in Hollywood.

Barr has written the instrumental scores for the series’ entire seven seasons, the last of which debuts Sunday.

Barr said the musical will revolve around protagonist, telepath and waitress Sookie Stackhouse, portrayed in the series by Anna Paquin. But, Barr added, after seven seasons of twists, turns and characters for Sookie, it’s proven a challenge to trim the saga down.

NEW YORK — Katy Perry could help make your “Teenage Dream” of becoming a singer a reality: The pop star is starting her own record label. Perry announced the launch of Metamorphosis Music on Tuesday. It’s a joint venture with her current label, Capitol Records.

The first to sign with Perry’s label is pop singer Ferras, who released his Perry executive-produced EP on Tuesday. The five-song self-titled effort includes the track “Legends Never Die,” which features Perry.

Ferras will join Perry for the North American leg of her Prismatic World Tour, which kicks off June 22 in Raleigh, North Carolina. It wraps Oct. 11 in Houston.

Perry and Ferras met in 2007 when they were both signed to Capitol.

Capitol is one of many labels under Universal Music Group, home to Def Jam and Republic Records.

One of the examples of the dormant tourist attraction is the Kereban Langit Temple located at Sading village, Mengwi.

Based on observation, this temple is rarely visited by travelers. Most of the visitors come to say prayers or melukat (purificatory rite) in the springs at the local temple.

The sign indicating if this temple is tourist attraction is only a signpost. Road access to the temple is relatively narrow because only has the width of 4 or 5 meters. Similarly, the parking space is less spacious and it lacks of supporting infrastructure.

Spokesperson of the Badung government, AA Gede Raka Yuda, said on Tuesday (Jun 17) that his party did not dismiss such condition. According to him, not all attractions in Ba-

dung could indeed develop well and bring in visitors.

Raka Yuda accompanied by the Division Head of Tourist Object and Attractions, the Badung Government Tourism Office, I Gde Made Suastika, said that to become a tourist object there were absolute requirements to be complied with including the attraction, accessibility and supporting facilities needed by travelers. “Yes, I truly realize if the Kereban Langit Temple does not meet some requirements. Later, this condition will be evaluated,” he said.

Suastika revealed that in 2014 the Badung government would conduct an evaluation against the 33 tourist attractions in Badung. It was meant to re-inventory the potential of tourist objects. When asked if there was the possibility

for a number of attractions to be removed, Suastika was reluctant to answer. “Clearly, we will make an evaluation this year,” he said.

Meanwhile, a legislator of Badung House, Putu Parwata, said the government was supposed to make a re-evaluation or assessment against the development of tourist object in Badung. According to him, the current condition indicated the asynchronous program having been implemented by the government. The government should arrange a planning on an integrated tourism resort development.

“With a budget of around IDR 7 billion, the tourism promotion gets the allocation of IDR 3 billion, while the remaining is utilized for tourist attraction development. So, I think this still needs reconsidering,” he said.

His party admitted that he did not agree if a tourist attraction would be removed. On the contrary, the Badung government should make improvement in the sector that should get the attention if it is indeed committed to the development of tourist attraction. (kmb25)

Afterward, the case was reported to police station. In relatively short time, police officers came to conduct a crime scene investigation and examination.

Evacuation of the victim’s body was quite troublesome because the accommodation sat on a high enough location. Having successfully taken to a flat place, the medical officers from Ubud community health center performed external examination to the victim’s body.

Quest hotel arrives in Surabaya

Stock adequate, price of basic needs increases Based on observation at some traditional markets in Denpasar, Tuesday (Jun 17), the basic needs experiencing price hike included eggs, garlic, onion and Putri Sejati rice. Traders argued that they were forced to raise the price due to diminishing supply from distributors since two weeks ago. For instance, the egg usually sold for IDR 34,000 per crate (30 pieces) increased to IDR 36,000 per crate. In addition, the price of Putri Sejati rice rose from IDR 206,500/25 kg to IDR 290,000/25 kg and onion from IDR 20,000/kg to IDR 23,000/kg.

Nengah Nasih, one of the traders at Agung Market, confessed that the price of egg increased about a week ago. “It’s a common thing ahead of fasting month where the prices always go up. By and large, it takes place until the Eid,” she said.

According to her, the increase in prices of basic needs ahead of the fasting month was not caused by the stock or supply running thin, but the surges in demand. “Commonly, Muslims have been preparing their basic needs far in advance before the fasting. This moment is taken advantage by distributors to raise prices, so the prices at traditional markets also go up,” he said.

Nyoman Wenten, a spice trader at Badung Market, also acknowledged that the rise in prices, such as large chili from IDR 6,000 to IDR 8.000/kg, garlic from IDR 13,600 to IDR 14,600/kg and shallot from IDR 24,600 to IDR 26,000/kg. “Not all prices rise. Some basic needs also show a decrease in price, such as chicken meat from IDR 30,000-IDR 35,000/kg to IDR 26,000/ kg,” he said.

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

PARIS - Women with a specific gene mutation have a higher risk of dying from a type of breast cancer, said a study Tuesday that raised prospects of targeted drugs.

Previous research had shown that the chances of surviving breast cancer after treatment were partly inherited. It was suspected that genes in the body’s immune system were involved, but it was unclear which ones.

Now scientists link a variant in CCL20 -- a gene involved in immune response -- to a higher risk of death for women who have undergone chemotherapy for so-called oestrogen receptor negative (ER-) cancer.

The discovery “can represent ideal targets for tailored therapeutics, and may also enhance our current prognostic prediction capabilities,” said the results published in the journal Nature Communications.

The team used data from numerous studies involving more than 2,600 women in different countries.

They looked at protein-coding changes in genes among women who had received chemotherapy for ER- cancer, a category that affects a minority of patients and is harder to treat than ER+ cancer.

The team adjusted the results for possibly confounding traits like a patient’s age at diagnosis and tumour size.

The discovery explained only a small fraction of the variation associated with breast cancer survival, and more mutations must be uncovered to fully understand the genetic basis of ER- prognosis, wrote the researchers.

In a separate breast cancer study published online by the British Medical Journal (BMJ), researchers from Norway and the United States found that mammograms carried out once every two years may reduce death risk by about 28 percent.

About 27 deaths from breast cancer can be avoided for every 10,000 women who did mammography screening -- or about one in 368, said the team after analysing data from all women in Norway aged 50 to 79 between 1986 and 2009.

“Breast cancer deaths occurred in 1,175 of the women invited to mammography screening and in 8,996 of the women who were not,” the team wrote, calling the link “substantial”.

The finding adds to the ongoing debate about the value of such scans versus the dangers of overdiagnosis, which sees some women undergo invasive treatment for cancers that would never have made them ill or even been found without a mammogram.

In a comment also carried by bmj.com, two American professors of medicine, Joann Elmore and Russell Harris, said the team had by no means put the issue to bed.

“The Norwegian study largely confirms what is already known: the benefits of screening mammography are modest at best,” the pair wrote.

“While the benefits are small, the harms of screening are real and include overdiagnosis, psychological stress, and exorbitant healthcare costs.”

Parts of Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam are at risk because, like China, they have live bird markets in denselypopulated areas, the team said.

Places potentially at risk include urban centres on the coast of east and southeast China where H7N9 has not been reported; parts of the Bengal regions of Bangladesh and India; Vietnam’s Red River and Mekong deltas; and isolated areas of Indonesia and the Philippines.

A map published in the journal Nature Communications, seeks to provide watchdogs with a tool to identify H7N9’s possible flare points.

H7N9 is the second bird virus alongside H5N1 to have emerged in recent years through live markets, where traders and shoppers come in close contact with infected chickens and ducks.

H5N1 is far more dangerous for

humans than H7N9 but its spread through birds is more easily detectable, as poultry usually show signs of being sick from it.

H7N9 can be asymptomatic in birds, meaning the animals may show no sign of illness.

“The slow geographical expansion of the reported H7N9 cases in the central and southern provinces of China indicates that despite remarkably strict control efforts, H7N9 is difficult to contain along poultry market chains,” the study warned.

It “may spread beyond the distribution indicated by the human cases which have thus far been reported.”

The study was led by scientists at the Free University of Brussels, the International Livestock Research Institute, Oxford University and the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.

Looking at the evidence from northeastern China, where chicken production is intensive, the researchers said industrial-scale farms were unlikely to have played a significant role in spreading H7N9 there.

This backs previous research that smaller farms, where domestic fowl are likelier to come into contact with wild birds, and trading in infected poultry at local markets were major channels for spreading the virus.

H7N9 initially ignited fears that it could mutate to become easily transmissible between people, which might lead to a global pandemic.

But Chinese officials and the World Health Organisation (WHO) say there is no evidence of sustained human-to-human transmission, despite sporadic cases among members of the same family.

For this year, he said, the beach to be protected with revetment by Bali-Penida River Region Agency on Baluk Rening would be along 400 meters and Cupel Beach along 400 meters. According to him, of the total costal length of 76 kilometers in Jembrana County, 14 kilometers were exposed to abrasion. The land previously jutting into the sea vanished as eroded by water.

According to Mertadana, at least 21 points of the beaches were exposed to abrasion. Of all the eroded beaches, the worst abrasion affected the Jembrana, Negara and Melaya subdistrict.

In detail, the beaches included the Cupel Beach, Perancak, Candikusuma and Pebuahan. Even, the Gilimanuk Beach was also currently eroded.

Mertadana hoped the abrasion would not be getting worse. Besides, his party also expected local people not to make a building that violated the coastal borderline.

“In the rules, it has been clearly set forth that a building must be at least 100 meters away from the coastal borderline,” he said.

Meanwhile, when making site inspection to the victim of abrasion at Pebuahan, Banyubiru, Negara, Tuesday morning (Jun

17), the Regent of Jembrana, Putu Artha, saw that several buildings at Pebuahan hamlet, Banyubiru village, were ravaged.

When Regent Artha with several relevant leaders of regional working unit (SKPD), the subdistrict head of Negara I Ketut Karyadi Erawan and headman of Banyubiru village Masturi saw one of the damaged buildings, in fact, one of the residents, asked for the promise chiefly related to the coastal safety.

NEGARA - Dozens of hectares of paddy field at Subak Air Anakan, Banyubiru village, are in drought. Since last week, the paddy plants of farmers had looked to dry as running out of water. Soil of the paddy field also seemed to have cracked due to the drought.

One of the local farmers, Wayan Watra, 71, said that his paddy field relied on rainwater but since last month it never rained. As a result, the paddy plant of 13 days old looked to wither. He said there were about 25 hectares of paddy fields across the subak area. Today, farmers were waiting for rain so the young paddy plant could survive.

The irrigation channel was also seen to have dried out so the paddy field consequently cracked as obtaining no water supply. Previously, farmers relied on the water flowing from irrigation canals originating from Benel Dam. This subak group planted rice simultaneously with two other subak groups.

“Now, the paddy plants are yellowing and wilting,” he said. Due to the drought, farmers would certainly suffer losses because not all paddy plants could be harvested. The subak area located at two hamlets namely the Air Anakan and Berawan Salak indeed had looked dry. Likewise, the irrigation canals no longer had water. Even, some plots of paddy plants at roadside of Banyubiru village looked to have withered and died. Watra was confident if it would not rain next week, all the paddy plants would wither. (kmb26)

MOSCOW — An explosion at a key pipeline in Ukraine has not disrupted the flow of gas to Europe, Russian gas monopoly Gazprom said on Wednesday. The blast, which occurred Tuesday far from where government troops are fighting proRussia separatists, came a day after Russia cut gas supplies to Ukraine in a dispute over price and overdue payments.

Moscow says it is waiting for Kiev to pay at least $1.9 billion of its $4.5 billion debt before the talks on clearing the debt and agreeing on prices could resume. Gazprom said Monday that it would need to start pumping by mid-October to insure adequate winter supplies for Ukraine.

Vitaly Markelov, Gazprom’s deputy chief executive, told reporters on

Wednesday that gas flows had not been disrupted and that European customers are receiving the contracted amounts. Markelov refused to speculate on the cause but said poor maintenance of pipelines in Ukraine makes such accidents more likely.

“I think they will continue to occur because the network needs to be maintained well,” he said.

Ukrainian officials say terrorism has not been ruled out as the cause of the explosion. The energy ministry speculated that the blast could be linked to the halt of gas supplies to Ukraine.

The ministry said in a statement on Wednesday that it has “grounds to believe” that “the blast was caused by sabotage” intended to discredit Ukraine as a transit country. The ministry did not provide any evidence to support the claim.

CANBERRA — A trans-Pacific free trade pact could be agreed upon early next year before U.S. presidential election politics get in the way, Australia’s trade minister said Wednesday.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership, or TPP, is aimed at cutting tariffs and setting trade rules, and is central to the Obama administration’s attempt to boost American exports to Asia and re-orientate U.S. foreign policy toward a region of growing economic importance. The pact is seen as a precursor to a future wide freetrade arrangement for the entire Pacific Rim region.

Trade Minister Andrew Robb told a U.S. Studies Center conference in Canberra that there was no chance of an agreement being struck among the 12 nations this year.

“I think this year’s out. I mean, we’ll keep negotiating, there’s quite a momentum I feel and we are .... over 80 percent of the way,” Robb said.

Robb said the final stage of negotiations was the most difficult and important.

“With the political will, it could conclude fairly quickly,”

he said.

“The Republicans have said it will not get through this year; they’ve said to me privately and probably have been saying it publicly,” he said. “In the first half of the year, there’s a political opportunity in the U.S., potentially.

And if they go after that, you start to run into the politics of the next presidential election.”

“I think the first half of next year, I think we’ll be there more or less with the content, it’s then just the politics,” he added.

Countries negotiating the TPP are the United States, Japan, Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam.

U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman told the conference in a video address from Washington that the economic significance of the TPP was enormous, covering 40 percent of global GDP and a third of the world’s trade.

“This is an opportunity that we must not let pass us by,” Froman said. “I look forward to working with Minister Robb and others to lead these negotiations to a successful conclusion in the coming months.”

and sunlight resistant,” he said.

Similarly, the condition of a number of decorative lights had nearly collapsed. His party hoped it could be promptly addressed by relevant agencies. Otherwise, the condition could endanger travelers.

Considering the Penelokan tourist attraction had been becoming a contributor to the regionally generated revenue of Bangli, Basma expected the government to immediately restore the damaged public facilities.

“The government should immediately plan again so that we can strive for it in the discussion of the budget amendment. Make the tourist attraction as beautiful as possible, so that travelers can feel at home. After returning home from Penelokan, they can bring along a beautiful and comfortable impression. Moreover, it can be told to others. By that way, it will be able to attract other travelers to come to Kintamani,” said the politician from Suter, Kintamani. (ina)

Witnesses said the tricycle taxi was driven into the outdoor area in Damaturu, capital of Yobe state, soon after the Brazil-Mexico match started Tuesday night.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility but Boko Haram, an armed Islamic group that wants to turn Nigeria into an Islamic state, was suspected.

Police Assistant Superintendent Nathan Cheghan said Wednesday that 14 people were killed and 26 were wounded in the attack.

He said rescue workers had been careful about rushing to the scene for fear of secondary explosions.

Boko Haram group frequently detonates secondary explosions to kill those who help victims from the first bomb.

Security experts have warned that Islamic militants might attack crowds watching the World Cup in public places in Nigeria, Kenya

and Uganda, as they did in 2010 in Uganda. The explosions in Kampala, Uganda, at two sites where people watched the 2010 World Cup final on TV killed 74 people.

TOKYO — Japan’s parliament has passed a law which bans possession of child pornography, but excludes sexually explicit depictions of children in comics, animation and computer graphics. The upper house voted Wednesday to approve the law, which was passed by the lower house earlier this month.

The law provides for prison terms of up to one year and fines of up to 1 million yen ($9,800) for having pornographic photographs or videos of children. It allows a grace period of one year for people owning such materials to dispose of them. The law was first proposed in May 2013 as an amendment to an earlier law that banned production and distribution of child pornography but not ownership of such materials.

Child advocates and other critics of the new legislation say it is a long-overdue improvement but are unhappy with the exclusion of depictions of sexual fantasies involving

children in “manga” comic books, anime and video games. Pictures of children as young as toddlers posed in sexually suggestive ways are easily found online in Japan. The exclusion was made after publishers and lawyers’ associations contended that a ban on such images would violate the constitutional right of free speech.

According to humantrafficking. org, Japan is a hub for the production and distribution of child pornography, part of a massive sex industry that includes prostitutes dressed in school uniforms and other outfits meant to cater to pedophiles.

The new law requires Internet providers and other such companies to cooperate with police in preventing and investigating distribution of child pornography, which it defines as photos and videos that expose or focus on children’s sexual parts.

Police say widespread use of smart phones has aided the distribution of pornographic images of children.

They reported 1,644 cases of child pornography in 2013.

The Higher Education Admission Office of the central Henan province promised a full investigation into the scam after state broadcaster China Central Television ran an expose piece about it on Tuesday.

Education authorities have imposed increasingly strict rules to guard against cheating during the exam, which is called the

“gaokao” and has the reputation of being China’s level playing field for academic advancement. Cheating is not unheard of, especially using electronic gadgets, but hiring of surrogate test-takers has so far been rare.

Almost all Chinese high school graduates must take the exam, and their scores are the key criterion for what tier of university they can enter.

Competition in Henan province is especially intense because it has a larger student population and fewer allocated slots in Chinese universities as compared with many other provinces.

BANTING - Thirty-seven people remained missing on Wednesday after an apparently overloaded boat carrying Indonesian illegal migrants heading home for Ramadan sank overnight in rough seas off western Malaysia, killing at least two.

Officials said 58 people had been rescued or made it to land by themselves after the accident around midnight near Port Klang, Malaysia’s largest port.

“But 37 people are still missing and we have found two bodies,” said Mohamad Hambali Yaakup, head of the Port Klang office of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency.

“We plucked some of the survivors from the sea and others were found on land.”

The boat sank not far from shore, raising hopes that many of the missing had already made it to safety on their own, he added.

Officials believe 97 passengers were aboard the wooden boat, including some children.

Authorities said rescued passengers told them they were seeking to return home to Indonesia across the Malacca Strait -- the busy shipping lane between Malaysia and Indonesia’s Sumatra island -- for the Muslim fast-

ing month of Ramadan.

Officials had initially said the passengers were believed to be seeking to enter Malaysia.

“From interviews with those rescued, they said they were returning to Aceh (in northern Sumatra). They did not have any travel documents,” said Mohamad Hambali.

“As in previous years, many Indonesian migrants will be leaving Malaysia ahead of Ramadan.”

Around two million illegal immigrants -- the vast majority of them from Indonesia -- are estimated to be working in Malaysia.

Large numbers of them annually return home to Indonesia ahead of Ramadan, which begins around the end of June and will culminate in late July with Eid al-Fitr, Islam’s biggest festival.

“We believe the boat was overcrowded and the sea was rough during the incident,” Mohamad Hambali said.

Access to survivors was not immediately available as they had been taken into custody by police.

Authorities said five vessels and a helicopter were searching for survivors.

Relatively affluent Malaysia is a magnet for migrant workers from poorer neighbours such as Indonesia, Bangladesh and Myanmar.

Accidents, however, are frequent as thousands annually risk the sea journey in rickety boats to seek lowpaying work -- typically shunned by Malaysians -- on plantations, construction sites and in factories.

Indonesians often add to the risk by choosing to cross the Malacca Strait in darkness to avoid detection.

Last August a boat carrying more than 40 Indonesians heading home for Eid-al-Fitr sank off southern Malaysia.

Malaysian authorities called off a search several days later, with seven confirmed dead and 33 still missing.

SURABAYA - Sex workers in skin-tight outfits sit in shop windows, ignoring the call to prayer that blares from mosques across the heart of one of Southeast Asia’s biggest red-light districts. The series of narrow alleys in Surabaya’s “Dolly” district on Indonesia’s Java island teem with prostitutes touting for business, smiling through the windows and doorways of dingy clubs and bars housed in crumbling buildings.

While foreign tourists may first think of places such as Thailand when it comes to Southeast Asian red-light destinations, one of the largest has been challenging assumptions in the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country for decades, largely undisturbed by authorities.

But now a crusading mayor -- credited with regenerating Surabaya, Indonesia’s secondbiggest city after the capital Jakarta -- is making a determined push to close down the notorious brothel network despite fierce resistance and warnings that it could push sex workers into destitution.

“We have to lift our people from oppression,” said Tri Rismaharini, a female mayor who wears the Muslim headscarf and whose stewardship of Surabaya has led many to predict she could have a future role in national politics.

While the city says the plan is its own, Islamic leaders are also claiming credit after pressuring authorities for years over Dolly, which is thought to take its name from a Dutch madam who ran a brothel in the city during the Netherlands’s colonial rule of Indonesia.

Now Rismaharini has set a date of June 18 to close the brothels in Dolly and a neighbouring area called Jarak, which have a largely local clientele.

Authorities are offering each of the estimated 1,400 prostitutes around five million rupiah ($420) and training in new professions that are expected to replace prostitution there, such as baking or handicrafts.

While many have welcomed the move, the plan has stirred strong opposition from sex workers and others whose jobs depend on Dolly, such as taxi drivers and street vendors who contribute to the area’s estimated nightly income of between 300 and 500 million rupiah ($25,000 - $42,000).

Sex workers and residents have been staging protests in recent weeks, with hundreds of prostitutes marching through Dolly earlier this month. “I am not going to accept the government offer because I really need this work,” said Mawar, who gave only one name, sitting on a faded old sofa in a club in Dolly.

“I would never be able to find another job because I did not even finish elementary school.”

The sex worker, who earns between 10 million and 13 million rupiah a month ($850 to $1,100), said it would be hard for her to support her two children, aged five and eight, if Dolly closes.

On a recent evening, there were crowds of people and hordes of cars and motorbikes thronging the streets, including many prostitutes and pimps.

There were also couples out for a stroll and children playing, and the atmosphere was peaceful.

The area appeared to be operating normally in recent days, apart from regular protests during the day time, an AFP reporter said.

According to local reports, the mayor will issue a declaration on Wednesday evening, saying that Dolly and Jarak are closed and police will move in to shut it down.

The prostitutes will have to leave the same day and will receive training for the next seven days, according to officials.

Those who came from villages outside Surabaya will have to return to them.

For some members of the public, this will be a welcome move.

“I want Dolly to be closed - this place brings shame on Surabaya,” said Siti, a 46-yearold teacher who like many Indonesians goes by one name.

“Now it needs to refresh a little bit. “I use the words of Ron [Dennis], who said it became an engineering team rather than a racing team. We lost some flexibility; we lost maybe [the ability] to look outside as well.

“It is a very competitive sport, so we should always monitor what the others are doing. “And if someone is better than you, we need to try to understand why, rather than looking at our shoes and expect we are going to do better one day.”

He added: “There is a little bit of culture change. There has been drastic change in the aero department at McLaren, and I think there is a new strategy in place and new leadership in place to drive where we should be.

“And from that point, that will be the first step. And from there

we will go to the next step which will be to try to go to winning, and a championship-winning team.”

Boullier suggests that McLaren had also suffered by failing to adapt to the ever-tighter scope of F1 rules, which limited chances of recovery over a campaign.

“McLaren has been and is still a big machine capable of recovering,” he explained. “The only difference is that the outside world has changed. “We have no more testing, more and more restrictions in the wind tunnel, and more and more restrictions everywhere. “So from a recovery point, we have less capacity - not in terms of inside the team but in terms of what we can do. And that is something that has maybe been forgotten or not well handled when they took some risk with concept cars.

“They obviously were expecting to recover, but we cannot recover as much as we were doing before. “It is a change of strategy: the way you build new cars, the way you introduce new concepts, and everything has been reviewed. It won’t be like before now, because we cannot afford to do this.”

‘Spectacular’ Memo takes plaudits for Mexico Reuters

FORTALEZA, Brazil - Goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa was the toast of Mexico after frustrating Brazil’s much-vaunted attack with an outstanding display in a 0-0 draw in World Cup Group A on Tuesday.

Ochoa, known as Memo by his team mates, stood tall to deny Paulinho, Neymar and Thiago Silva, blocking eight attempts on the goal to the dlight of thousands of ecstatic Mexicans in the Castelao arena.

“I believe this was the best match of my life because this was a World Cup game and this is very important,” Ochoa said. “We have to move on, celebrate with my team mates and my family, but move on because the path is still long.

“Thank God I made those saves and now it’s time to keep on working.” Mexico coach Miguel Herrera was fulsome in his praise.

“I don’t know whether I can think of another goalkeeper in memory...someone who has done what Memo did today,” Herrera told a news conference.

“Memo today had high-level saves, gave the certainty to the team that we needed and gave confidence that we’re well covered.”

Ochoa, who has played for French club AC Ajaccio for the last three seasons but is currently listed as a free agent, was named man of the match.

“I didn’t like the Mexican goalie,” Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari joked to reporters.

“He did very well, he was spectacular. The defences he did were spectacular. Calm, tranquil, he knows how to play, is well positioned.

“I think he really was the best player in the match and Mexico has a very good quality team.”

Herrera said the 28-year-old Ochoa had been performing “slightly” better than his other keepers.

“We decided that Memo is the person we saw calmer.

We saw Memo slightly above the two,” he added.

“Memo has responded as we expected in his attitude.

BELO HORIZONTE - Algeria’s coach conceded his inexperienced team were exposed by a much fitter Belgium on Tuesday but also complained a foul was missed in the runup to the deciding goal during the Africans’ 2-1 defeat.

Algeria scored their first World Cup goal in 28 years to take a surprise first-half lead against the Group H favourites when playmaker Sofiane Feghouli fired home from the penalty spot.

But their resilience withered in the second half and they let the Europeans take control with Marouane Fellaini scoring a superb header on 70 minutes and Dries Mertens drilling home the winner 10 minutes from time.

“We let them play in the second half,” the Franco-Bosnian Vahid Halilhodzic told reporters. “We should have run a little bit more, we should have dared a bit

more. Physically, the Belgium players are much stronger.”

Halilhodzic pinpointed lack of condition as a reason for his side’s late capitulation. “My players were lacking in the second half, some of them were asking to be substituted,” he said.

“The second half showed the difference in experience. They showed freshness, we committed small faults. But there was a lot of quality in our play.

“I have a number of players that are rather limited, they’re young, they’re not that experienced, they can’t play 90 minutes. Each Algerian player needs to improve his physical condition by 30 to 50 percent. The Belgian players are in much better shape.”

Halilhodzic accused Mexican referee Marco Rodriguez of missing a foul from Kevin De Bruyne on Feghouli prior to Belgium’s second and winning goal.

“There was a tackle from behind on

Feghouli and for me it was an obvious foul. This could have changed everything because the second goal would not have been scored,” he said.

“I may be subjective because it’s my team, but I saw a foul. After that, a second goal was scored and that meant a defeat for us and that hurts.”

Despite the defeat, Halilhodzic said his team had made Algeria proud and pretty much played to their potential.

“We could have won. We were heroic in the first half. At half-time I was sure we would make it. We’ve missed a major opportunity. But I don’t want to blame anyone. You can say I am the one to be blamed, as usual,” he laughed.

SAO PAULO — Fred denies diving in Brazil’s World Cup opener that led to a disputed, go-ahead penalty kick. France’s Loic Remy considers the fall a disgrace and has called for punishment. The debate over diving began on Day 1 of this World Cup, and it has people everywhere talking about whether simulation is simply part of the game or bad for the sport altogether.

Coaches at all levels and players young and old are questioning the

motives and sportsmanship of global stars on the sport’s biggest stage — and how such examples of flopping might affect the on-field behavior of the next generation. Even 2012 U.S. Olympic diving coach Drew Johansen is taking notice.

“I have been watching the World Cup and have been very impressed with the dives I have seen,” said Johansen, who coaches at Indiana University. “Similar to the sport of diving, it’s all about getting the judges’ (referees’) attention. US turns attention to weekend game vs Portugal Associated Press

SAO PAULO — After arriving back at their rooms at 4:45 a.m., victorious American players skipped breakfast Tuesday, slept late, went for medical tests and turned their attention to Portugal.

The U.S. opened the World Cup with a thrilling 2-1 win over nemesis Ghana on John Brooks’ 86th-minute goal. But Jozy Altidore, Clint Dempsey, Matt Besler and Alejandro Bedoya all got hurt to various degrees. Altidore, taken off on a stretcher after straining his left hamstring, appears unlikely to play against the Portuguese this weekend.

“We’ve got to see how he now reacts the next couple days,” U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann said. “We’re full of hope that he comes back still in this tournament.”

Players hope to become the first American team to win consecutive World Cup games since a 2-0 start at the very first tournament in 1930.

“Woke up today, this morning, and you look at your Instagram and Twitter and you see the videos that people posted,” Bedoya said of fans back home celebrating Brooks’ goal. “It’s really cool, and I’m sure everybody feeds off this energy.”

The match drew 11.09 million viewers on ESPN, a record for men’s soccer on the network. And after decades when U.S. soccer fans felt outnumbered — even at home games — players took notice of the raucous red, white and blue-clad crowd at Arena das Dunas in Natal. “It was an incredible feeling, the support we had from the fans in the stadium along with the fans in every part of the country. We felt that,” said midfielder Graham Zusi, whose corner kick was headed in by Brooks. “It just makes me want more of it.”

But before the next game, the U.S. needs to heal a little. Dempsey, who set the tone when he scored 30 seconds in, had his nose broken by a shin to the face from defender John Boye when they battled for a header. Klinsmann expects him to play Sunday in the Amazon rain forest capital of Manaus.

“I don’t know how much a mask can protect him,” Klinsmann said. “It was tricky during the game. He barely could breathe. He struggled with that. But once it’s broken, it’s broken. It will take time to heal completely.” Dempsey will be paired up front either with Aron Johannsson, who was ineffective as Altidore’s replacement, or Chris Wondolowski.

Besler, like Altidore, went for an MRI. The defender felt soreness in his right leg late in the first half and was replaced by Brooks for the start of the second.

“Matt is no problem. All fine for the next game,” Klinsmann said.

Bedoya was hobbling before Zusi replaced him in the 77th minute. He said he had a hip pointer, the reoccurrence of an old injury, then also cramped up in his hamstring.

Missed foul, unfit players behind Algeria defeat Reuters

BELO HORIZONTE - Algeria’s coach conceded his inexperienced team were exposed by a much fitter Belgium on Tuesday but also complained a foul was missed in the runup to the deciding goal during the Africans’ 2-1 defeat.

Algeria scored their first World Cup goal in 28 years to take a surprise first-half lead against the Group H favourites when playmaker Sofiane Feghouli fired home from the penalty spot.

But their resilience withered in the second half and they let the Europeans take control with Marouane Fellaini scoring a superb header on 70 minutes and Dries Mertens drilling home the winner 10 minutes from time.

“We let them play in the second half,” the Franco-Bosnian Vahid Halilhodzic told reporters. “We should have run a little bit more, we should have dared a bit

more. Physically, the Belgium players are much stronger.”

Halilhodzic pinpointed lack of condition as a reason for his side’s late capitulation. “My players were lacking in the second half, some of them were asking to be substituted,” he said.

“The second half showed the difference in experience. They showed freshness, we committed small faults. But there was a lot of quality in our play.

“I have a number of players that are rather limited, they’re young, they’re not that experienced, they can’t play 90 minutes. Each Algerian player needs to improve his physical condition by 30 to 50 percent. The Belgian players are in much better shape.”

Halilhodzic accused Mexican referee Marco Rodriguez of missing a foul from Kevin De Bruyne on Feghouli prior to Belgium’s second and winning goal.

“There was a tackle from behind on

Feghouli and for me it was an obvious foul. This could have changed everything because the second goal would not have been scored,” he said.

“I may be subjective because it’s my team, but I saw a foul. After that, a second goal was scored and that meant a defeat for us and that hurts.”

Belgium coach Marc Wilmots rejected that, however, saying the tackle was “perfectly” executed.

Despite the defeat, Halilhodzic said his team had made Algeria proud and pretty much played to their potential.

“We could have won. We were heroic in the first half. At half-time I was sure we would make it. We’ve missed a major opportunity. But I don’t want to blame anyone. You can say I am the one to be blamed, as usual,” he laughed.

“Belgium is one of the best teams in Europe. My team gave as much as they could in the present time.”

SAO PAULO — Fred denies diving in Brazil’s World Cup opener that led to a disputed, go-ahead penalty kick. France’s Loic Remy considers the fall a disgrace and has called for punishment. The debate over diving began on Day 1 of this World Cup, and it has people everywhere talking about whether simulation is simply part of the game or bad for the sport altogether.

Coaches at all levels and players young and old are questioning the

motives and sportsmanship of global stars on the sport’s biggest stage — and how such examples of flopping might affect the on-field behavior of the next generation. Even 2012 U.S. Olympic diving coach Drew Johansen is taking notice.

“I have been watching the World Cup and have been very impressed with the dives I have seen,” said Johansen, who coaches at Indiana University. “Similar to the sport of diving, it’s all about getting the judges’ (referees’) attention. Fred went down in the area under minimal contact from Dejan Lovren in the 71st minute last Thursday, leading to Neymar’s penalty kick that put the Selecao ahead 2-1.

US turns attention to weekend game vs Portugal Associated Press

SAO PAULO — After arriving back at their rooms at 4:45 a.m., victorious American players skipped breakfast Tuesday, slept late, went for medical tests and turned their attention to Portugal.

The U.S. opened the World Cup with a thrilling 2-1 win over nemesis Ghana on John Brooks’ 86th-minute goal. But Jozy Altidore, Clint Dempsey, Matt Besler and Alejandro Bedoya all got hurt to various degrees. Altidore, taken off on a stretcher after straining his left hamstring, appears unlikely to play against the Portuguese this weekend.

“We’ve got to see how he now reacts the next couple days,” U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann said. “We’re full of hope that he comes back still in this tournament.”

Players hope to become the first American team to win consecutive World Cup games since a 2-0 start at the very first tournament in 1930.

“Woke up today, this morning, and you look at your Instagram and Twitter and you see the videos that people posted,” Bedoya said of fans back home celebrating Brooks’ goal. “It’s really cool, and I’m sure everybody feeds off this energy.”

The match drew 11.09 million viewers on ESPN, a record for men’s soccer on the network. And after decades when U.S. soccer fans felt outnumbered — even at home games — players took notice of the raucous red, white and blue-clad crowd at Arena das Dunas in Natal. “It was an incredible feeling, the support we had from the fans in the stadium along with the fans in every part of the country. We felt that,” said midfielder Graham Zusi, whose corner kick was headed in by Brooks. “It just makes me want more of it.”

But before the next game, the U.S. needs to heal a little. Dempsey, who set the tone when he scored 30 seconds in, had his nose broken by a shin to the face from defender John Boye when they battled for a header. Klinsmann expects him to play Sunday in the Amazon rain forest capital of Manaus.

“I don’t know how much a mask can protect him,” Klinsmann said. “It was tricky during the game. He barely could breathe. He struggled with that. But once it’s broken, it’s broken. It will take time to heal completely.” Dempsey will be paired up front either with Aron Johannsson, who was ineffective as Altidore’s replacement, or Chris Wondolowski.

Besler, like Altidore, went for an MRI. The defender felt soreness in his right leg late in the first half and was replaced by Brooks for the start of the second.

“Matt is no problem. All fine for the next game,” Klinsmann said.

Bedoya was hobbling before Zusi replaced him in the 77th minute. He said he had a hip pointer, the reoccurrence of an old injury, then also cramped up in his hamstring.

“Now it needs to refresh a little bit. “I use the words of Ron [Dennis], who said it became an engineering team rather than a racing team. We lost some flexibility; we lost maybe [the ability] to look outside as well.

“It is a very competitive sport, so we should always monitor what the others are doing. “And if someone is better than you, we need to try to understand why, rather than looking at our shoes and expect we are going to do better one day.”

He added: “There is a little bit of culture change. There has been drastic change in the aero department at McLaren, and I think there is a new strategy in place and new leadership in place to drive where we should be.

“And from that point, that will be the first step. And from there

we will go to the next step which will be to try to go to winning, and a championship-winning team.”

Boullier suggests that McLaren had also suffered by failing to adapt to the ever-tighter scope of F1 rules, which limited chances of recovery over a campaign.

“McLaren has been and is still a big machine capable of recovering,” he explained. “The only difference is that the outside world has changed. “We have no more testing, more and more restrictions in the wind tunnel, and more and more restrictions everywhere. “So from a recovery point, we have less capacity - not in terms of inside the team but in terms of what we can do. And that is something that has maybe been forgotten or not well handled when they took some risk with concept cars.

“They obviously were expecting to recover, but we cannot recover as much as we were doing before. “It is a change of strategy: the way you build new cars, the way you introduce new concepts, and everything has been reviewed. It won’t be like before now, because we cannot afford to do this.”

DAMATURU, Nigeria — Hours after a suicide bomber detonated explosives packed into a tricycle taxi at an outdoor World Cup viewing site in northeast Nigerian, police said the death toll was 14 with 26 people wounded. Witnesses said the tricycle taxi was driven into the outdoor area in Damaturu, capital of Yobe state, soon after the Brazil-Mexico match started Tuesday night.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility but Boko Haram, an armed Islamic group that wants to turn Nigeria into an Islamic state, was suspected.

Police Assistant Superintendent Nathan Cheghan said Wednesday that 14 people were killed and 26 were wounded in the attack.

He said rescue workers had been careful about rushing to the scene for fear of secondary explosions.

Boko Haram group frequently detonates secondary explosions to kill those who help victims from the first bomb.

Security experts have warned that Islamic militants might attack crowds watching the World Cup in public places in Nigeria, Kenya

and Uganda, as they did in 2010 in Uganda. The explosions in Kampala, Uganda, at two sites where people watched the 2010 World Cup final on TV killed 74 people.

Al-Shabab, a Somali insurgent group, set off those bombs.

Nigeria’s military has promised increased security but appears incapable of halting a stream of attacks by extremists holding more than 250 schoolgirls hostage.

The kidnapping of the girls two months ago and failure of Nigeria’s military and government to rescue them has roused international concern. The United States is searching for the girls with drones and has sent experts along with Britain and France to

help in counter-terrorism tactics and hostage negotiation.

Boko Haram’s leader Abubakar Shekau has threatened to sell the girls into slavery unless the government agrees to exchange them for detained extremists, but President Goodluck Jonathan has said he will not exchange prisoners. Nigeria’s military has said it knows where the girls are but that any military campaign could get them killed.

Boko Haram wants to Shariah, or Islamic law, to be applied in all of Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation whose people are almost equally divided between Christians in the south and Muslims in the north.

TOKYO — Japan’s parliament has passed a law which bans possession of child pornography, but excludes sexually explicit depictions of children in comics, animation and computer graphics. The upper house voted Wednesday to approve the law, which was passed by the lower house earlier this month.

The law provides for prison terms of up to one year and fines of up to 1 million yen ($9,800) for having pornographic photographs or videos of children. It allows a grace period of one year for people owning such materials to dispose of them. The law was first proposed in May 2013 as an amendment to an earlier law that banned production and distribution of child pornography but not ownership of such materials.

Child advocates and other critics of the new legislation say it is a long-overdue improvement but are unhappy with the exclusion of depictions of sexual fantasies involving

children in “manga” comic books, anime and video games. Pictures of children as young as toddlers posed in sexually suggestive ways are easily found online in Japan. The exclusion was made after publishers and lawyers’ associations contended that a ban on such images would violate the constitutional right of free speech.

According to humantrafficking. org, Japan is a hub for the production and distribution of child pornography, part of a massive sex industry that includes prostitutes dressed in school uniforms and other outfits meant to cater to pedophiles.

The new law requires Internet providers and other such companies to cooperate with police in preventing and investigating distribution of child pornography, which it defines as photos and videos that expose or focus on children’s sexual parts.

Police say widespread use of smart phones has aided the distribution of pornographic images of children.

They reported 1,644 cases of child pornography in 2013.

China says 127 students hired others for exam Associated Press Writer

BEIJING — At least 127 testtakers in a Chinese province hired other people to take the country’s all-important college entrance exam on their behalf, the provincial college admission office said.

The Higher Education Admission Office of the central Henan province promised a full investigation into the scam after state broadcaster China Central Television ran an expose piece about it on Tuesday.

Education authorities have imposed increasingly strict rules to guard against cheating during the exam, which is called the

“gaokao” and has the reputation of being China’s level playing field for academic advancement. Cheating is not unheard of, especially using electronic gadgets, but hiring of surrogate test-takers has so far been rare.

Almost all Chinese high school graduates must take the exam, and their scores are the key criterion for what tier of university they can enter.

Competition in Henan province is especially intense because it has a larger student population and fewer allocated slots in Chinese universities as compared with many other provinces.

BANTING - Thirty-seven people remained missing on Wednesday after an apparently overloaded boat carrying Indonesian illegal migrants heading home for Ramadan sank overnight in rough seas off western Malaysia, killing at least two.

Officials said 58 people had been rescued or made it to land by themselves after the accident around midnight near Port Klang, Malaysia’s largest port.

“But 37 people are still missing and we have found two bodies,” said Mohamad Hambali Yaakup, head of the Port Klang office of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency.

“We plucked some of the survivors from the sea and others were found on land.”

The boat sank not far from shore, raising hopes that many of the missing had already made it to safety on their own, he added.

Officials believe 97 passengers were aboard the wooden boat, including some children.

Authorities said rescued passengers told them they were seeking to return home to Indonesia across the Malacca Strait -- the busy shipping lane between Malaysia and Indonesia’s Sumatra island -- for the Muslim fast-

ing month of Ramadan.

Officials had initially said the passengers were believed to be seeking to enter Malaysia.

“From interviews with those rescued, they said they were returning to Aceh (in northern Sumatra). They did not have any travel documents,” said Mohamad Hambali.

“As in previous years, many Indonesian migrants will be leaving Malaysia ahead of Ramadan.”

Around two million illegal immigrants -- the vast majority of them from Indonesia -- are estimated to be working in Malaysia.

Large numbers of them annually return home to Indonesia ahead of Ramadan, which begins around the end of June and will culminate in late July with Eid al-Fitr, Islam’s biggest festival.

“We believe the boat was overcrowded and the sea was rough during the incident,” Mohamad Hambali said.

Access to survivors was not immediately available as they had been taken into custody by police.

Authorities said five vessels and a helicopter were searching for survivors.

Relatively affluent Malaysia is a magnet for migrant workers from poorer neighbours such as Indonesia, Bangladesh and Myanmar.

Accidents, however, are frequent as thousands annually risk the sea journey in rickety boats to seek lowpaying work -- typically shunned by Malaysians -- on plantations, construction sites and in factories.

Indonesians often add to the risk by choosing to cross the Malacca Strait in darkness to avoid detection.

Last August a boat carrying more than 40 Indonesians heading home for Eid-al-Fitr sank off southern Malaysia.

Malaysian authorities called off a search several days later, with seven confirmed dead and 33 still missing.

SURABAYA - Sex workers in skin-tight outfits sit in shop windows, ignoring the call to prayer that blares from mosques across the heart of one of Southeast Asia’s biggest red-light districts. The series of narrow alleys in Surabaya’s “Dolly” district on Indonesia’s Java island teem with prostitutes touting for business, smiling through the windows and doorways of dingy clubs and bars housed in crumbling buildings.

While foreign tourists may first think of places such as Thailand when it comes to Southeast Asian red-light destinations, one of the largest has been challenging assumptions in the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country for decades, largely undisturbed by authorities.

But now a crusading mayor -- credited with regenerating Surabaya, Indonesia’s secondbiggest city after the capital Jakarta -- is making a determined push to close down the notorious brothel network despite fierce resistance and warnings that it could push sex workers into destitution.

“We have to lift our people from oppression,” said Tri Rismaharini, a female mayor who wears the Muslim headscarf and whose stewardship of Surabaya has led many to predict she could have a future role in national politics.

While the city says the plan is its own, Islamic leaders are also claiming credit after pressuring authorities for years over Dolly, which is thought to take its name from a Dutch madam who ran a brothel in the city during the Netherlands’s colonial rule of Indonesia.

Now Rismaharini has set a date of June 18 to close the brothels in Dolly and a neighbouring area called Jarak, which have a largely local clientele.

Authorities are offering each of the estimated 1,400 prostitutes around five million rupiah ($420) and training in new professions that are expected to replace prostitution there, such as baking or handicrafts.

While many have welcomed the move, the plan has stirred strong opposition from sex workers and others whose jobs depend on Dolly, such as taxi drivers and street vendors who contribute to the area’s estimated nightly income of between 300 and 500 million rupiah ($25,000 - $42,000).

Sex workers and residents have been staging protests in recent weeks, with hundreds of prostitutes marching through Dolly earlier this month. “I am not going to accept the government offer because I really need this work,” said Mawar, who gave only one name, sitting on a faded old sofa in a club in Dolly.

“I would never be able to find another job because I did not even finish elementary school.”

The sex worker, who earns between 10 million and 13 million rupiah a month ($850 to $1,100), said it would be hard for her to support her two children, aged five and eight, if Dolly closes.

On a recent evening, there were crowds of people and hordes of cars and motorbikes thronging the streets, including many prostitutes and pimps.

There were also couples out for a stroll and children playing, and the atmosphere was peaceful.

The area appeared to be operating normally in recent days, apart from regular protests during the day time, an AFP reporter said.

According to local reports, the mayor will issue a declaration on Wednesday evening, saying that Dolly and Jarak are closed and police will move in to shut it down.

The prostitutes will have to leave the same day and will receive training for the next seven days, according to officials.

Those who came from villages outside Surabaya will have to return to them.

For some members of the public, this will be a welcome move.

“I want Dolly to be closed - this place brings shame on Surabaya,” said Siti, a 46-yearold teacher who like many Indonesians goes by one name.

BoJ becomes Japan’s biggest creditor

CANBERRA — A trans-Pacific free trade pact could be agreed upon early next year before U.S. presidential election politics get in the way, Australia’s trade minister said Wednesday.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership, or TPP, is aimed at cutting tariffs and setting trade rules, and is central to the Obama administration’s attempt to boost American exports to Asia and re-orientate U.S. foreign policy toward a region of growing economic importance. The pact is seen as a precursor to a future wide freetrade arrangement for the entire Pacific Rim region.

Trade Minister Andrew Robb told a U.S. Studies Center conference in Canberra that there was no chance of an agreement being struck among the 12 nations this year.

“I think this year’s out. I mean, we’ll keep negotiating, there’s quite a momentum I feel and we are .... over 80 percent of the way,” Robb said.

Robb said the final stage of negotiations was the most difficult and important.

“With the political will, it could conclude fairly quickly,”

he said.

“The Republicans have said it will not get through this year; they’ve said to me privately and probably have been saying it publicly,” he said. “In the first half of the year, there’s a political opportunity in the U.S., potentially.

And if they go after that, you start to run into the politics of the next presidential election.”

“I think the first half of next year, I think we’ll be there more or less with the content, it’s then just the politics,” he added.

Countries negotiating the TPP are the United States, Japan, Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam.

U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman told the conference in a video address from Washington that the economic significance of the TPP was enormous, covering 40 percent of global GDP and a third of the world’s trade.

“This is an opportunity that we must not let pass us by,” Froman said. “I look forward to working with Minister Robb and others to lead these negotiations to a successful conclusion in the coming months.”

Raden Prabangsa was touted as a prince who liked merrymaking, boozing, gambling and making love affair. Understandably, the kingdom had abundant wealth.

Considering the Penelokan tourist attraction had been becoming a contributor to the regionally generated revenue of Bangli, Basma expected the government to immediately restore the damaged public facilities.

“The government should immediately plan again so that we can strive for it in the discussion of the budget amendment. Make the tourist attraction as beautiful as possible, so that travelers can feel at home. After returning home from Penelokan, they can bring along a beautiful and comfortable impression. For this year, he said, the beach to be protected with revetment by Bali-Penida River Region Agency on Baluk Rening would be along 400 meters and Cupel Beach along 400 meters. According to him, of the total costal length of 76 kilometers in Jembrana County, 14 kilometers were exposed to abrasion. The land previously jutting into the sea vanished as eroded by water.

According to Mertadana, at least 21 points of the beaches were exposed to abrasion. Of all the eroded beaches, the worst abrasion affected the Jembrana, Negara and Melaya subdistrict.

In detail, the beaches included the Cupel Beach, Perancak, Candikusuma and Pebuahan. Even, the Gilimanuk Beach was also currently eroded.

Mertadana hoped the abrasion would not be getting worse. Besides, his party also expected local people not to make a building that violated the coastal borderline.

“In the rules, it has been clearly set forth that a building must be at least 100 meters away from the coastal borderline,” he said.

Meanwhile, when making site inspection to the victim of abrasion at Pebuahan, Banyubiru, Negara, Tuesday morning (Jun

17), the Regent of Jembrana, Putu Artha, saw that several buildings at Pebuahan hamlet, Banyubiru village, were ravaged.

NEGARA - Dozens of hectares of paddy field at Subak Air Anakan, Banyubiru village, are in drought. Since last week, the paddy plants of farmers had looked to dry as running out of water. Soil of the paddy field also seemed to have cracked due to the drought.

One of the local farmers, Wayan Watra, 71, said that his paddy field relied on rainwater but since last month it never rained. As a result, the paddy plant of 13 days old looked to wither. He said there were about 25 hectares of paddy fields across the subak area. Today, farmers were waiting for rain so the young paddy plant could survive.

The irrigation channel was also seen to have dried out so the paddy field consequently cracked as obtaining no water supply. Previously, farmers relied on the water flowing from irrigation canals originating from Benel Dam. This subak group planted rice simultaneously with two other subak groups.

“Now, the paddy plants are yellowing and wilting,” he said. Due to the drought, farmers would certainly suffer losses because not all paddy plants could be harvested. The subak area located at two hamlets namely the Air Anakan and Berawan Salak indeed had looked dry. Likewise, the irrigation canals no longer had water. Even, some plots of paddy plants at roadside of Banyubiru village looked to have withered and died. Watra was confident if it would not rain next week, all the paddy plants would wither. (kmb26)

MOSCOW — An explosion at a key pipeline in Ukraine has not disrupted the flow of gas to Europe, Russian gas monopoly Gazprom said on Wednesday. The blast, which occurred Tuesday far from where government troops are fighting proRussia separatists, came a day after Russia cut gas supplies to Ukraine in a dispute over price and overdue payments.

Moscow says it is waiting for Kiev to pay at least $1.9 billion of its $4.5 billion debt before the talks on clearing the debt and agreeing on prices could resume. Gazprom said Monday that it would need to start pumping by mid-October to insure adequate winter supplies for Ukraine.

Vitaly Markelov, Gazprom’s deputy chief executive, told reporters on

Wednesday that gas flows had not been disrupted and that European customers are receiving the contracted amounts. Markelov refused to speculate on the cause but said poor maintenance of pipelines in Ukraine makes such accidents more likely.

“I think they will continue to occur because the network needs to be maintained well,” he said.

Ukrainian officials say terrorism has not been ruled out as the cause of the explosion. The energy ministry speculated that the blast could be linked to the halt of gas supplies to Ukraine.

The ministry said in a statement on Wednesday that it has “grounds to believe” that “the blast was caused by sabotage” intended to discredit Ukraine as a transit country. The ministry did not provide any evidence to support the claim.

PARIS - Women with a specific gene mutation have a higher risk of dying from a type of breast cancer, said a study Tuesday that raised prospects of targeted drugs.

Previous research had shown that the chances of surviving breast cancer after treatment were partly inherited. It was suspected that genes in the body’s immune system were involved, but it was unclear which ones.

Now scientists link a variant in CCL20 -- a gene involved in immune response -- to a higher risk of death for women who have undergone chemotherapy for so-called oestrogen receptor negative (ER-) cancer.

The discovery “can represent ideal targets for tailored therapeutics, and may also enhance our current prognostic prediction capabilities,” said the results published in the journal Nature Communications.

The team used data from numerous studies involving more than 2,600 women in different countries.

They looked at protein-coding changes in genes among women who had received chemotherapy for ER- cancer, a category that affects a minority of patients and is harder to treat than ER+ cancer.

The team adjusted the results for possibly confounding traits like a patient’s age at diagnosis and tumour size.

The discovery explained only a small fraction of the variation associated with breast cancer survival, and more mutations must be uncovered to fully understand the genetic basis of ER- prognosis, wrote the researchers.

In a separate breast cancer study published online by the British Medical Journal (BMJ), researchers from Norway and the United States found that mammograms carried out once every two years may reduce death risk by about 28 percent.

About 27 deaths from breast cancer can be avoided for every 10,000 women who did mammography screening -- or about one in 368, said the team after analysing data from all women in Norway aged 50 to 79 between 1986 and 2009.

“Breast cancer deaths occurred in 1,175 of the women invited to mammography screening and in 8,996 of the women who were not,” the team wrote, calling the link “substantial”.

The finding adds to the ongoing debate about the value of such scans versus the dangers of overdiagnosis, which sees some women undergo invasive treatment for cancers that would never have made them ill or even been found without a mammogram.

In a comment also carried by bmj.com, two American professors of medicine, Joann Elmore and Russell Harris, said the team had by no means put the issue to bed.

“The Norwegian study largely confirms what is already known: the benefits of screening mammography are modest at best,” the pair wrote.

“While the benefits are small, the harms of screening are real and include overdiagnosis, psychological stress, and exorbitant healthcare costs.”

Places potentially at risk include urban centres on the coast of east and southeast China where H7N9 has not been reported; parts of the Bengal regions of Bangladesh and India; Vietnam’s Red River and Mekong deltas; and isolated areas of Indonesia and the Philippines.

A map published in the journal Nature Communications, seeks to provide watchdogs with a tool to identify H7N9’s possible flare points.

H7N9 is the second bird virus alongside H5N1 to have emerged in recent years through live markets, where traders and shoppers come in close contact with infected chickens and ducks.

H5N1 is far more dangerous for

humans than H7N9 but its spread through birds is more easily detectable, as poultry usually show signs of being sick from it.

H7N9 can be asymptomatic in birds, meaning the animals may show no sign of illness.

“The slow geographical expansion of the reported H7N9 cases in the central and southern provinces of China indicates that despite remarkably strict control efforts, H7N9 is difficult to contain along poultry market chains,” the study warned.

It “may spread beyond the distribution indicated by the human cases which have thus far been reported.”

The study was led by scientists at the Free University of Brussels, the International Livestock Research Institute, Oxford University and the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.

Looking at the evidence from northeastern China, where chicken production is intensive, the researchers said industrial-scale farms were unlikely to have played a significant role in spreading H7N9 there.

This backs previous research that smaller farms, where domestic fowl are likelier to come into contact with wild birds, and trading in infected poultry at local markets were major channels for spreading the virus.

H7N9 initially ignited fears that it could mutate to become easily transmissible between people, which might lead to a global pandemic.

But Chinese officials and the World Health Organisation (WHO) say there is no evidence of sustained human-to-human transmission, despite sporadic cases among members of the same family.

Traders argued that they were forced to raise the price due to diminishing supply from distributors since two weeks ago. For instance, the egg usually sold for IDR 34,000 per crate (30 pieces) increased to IDR 36,000 per crate. In addition, the price of Putri Sejati rice rose from IDR 206,500/25 kg to IDR 290,000/25 kg and onion from IDR 20,000/kg to IDR 23,000/kg.

Nengah Nasih, one of the traders at Agung Market, confessed that the price of egg increased about a week ago. “It’s a common thing ahead of fasting month where the prices always go up. By and large, it takes place until the Eid,” she said.

According to her, the increase in prices of basic needs ahead of the fasting month was not caused by the stock or supply running thin, but the surges in demand. “Commonly, Muslims have been preparing their basic needs far in advance before the fasting. This moment is taken advantage by distributors to raise prices, so the prices at traditional markets also go up,” he said.

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

‘True Blood’ headed for a musical afterlife

LOS ANGELES — Like the vampires it portrays, “True Blood” won’t seem to die. Even if it means breaking out in song. After the final scene of the upcoming last season of “True Blood,” fans may be able to take another fresh bite out of the HBO vampire drama.

“I think we’re really going to try to return to the roots of the show,” Barr commented.

“True Blood” co-star Stephen Moyer, who showed off his vocal chops last year on NBC’s highly rated live telecast of “The Sound of Music,” revealed he helped Barr put together some samples of the “True Blood” musical presented to HBO and Ball.

Barr said he hopes to present a workshop version about a year from now, but he’s not looking beyond that. To say this is “Broadway bound” is premature.

“There’s no guarantees,” the composer warned. “But I think the direction we’re heading in is really exciting.”

In the works: “’True Blood’: The Musical.” Seriously.

“This was something that I pitched to HBO and (show creator) Alan Ball,” said composer Nathan Barr, speaking on the arrivals line at the “True Blood” season premiere Tuesday night in Hollywood.

Barr has written the instrumental scores for the series’ entire seven seasons, the last of which debuts Sunday.

Barr said the musical will revolve around protagonist, telepath and waitress Sookie Stackhouse, portrayed in the series by Anna Paquin. But, Barr added, after seven seasons of twists, turns and characters for Sookie, it’s proven a challenge to trim the saga down.

NEW YORK — Katy Perry could help make your “Teenage Dream” of becoming a singer a reality: The pop star is starting her own record label. Perry announced the launch of Metamorphosis Music on Tuesday. It’s a joint venture with her current label, Capitol Records.

The first to sign with Perry’s label is pop singer Ferras, who released his Perry executive-produced EP on Tuesday. The five-song self-titled effort includes the track “Legends Never Die,” which features Perry.

Ferras will join Perry for the North American leg of her Prismatic World Tour, which kicks off June 22 in Raleigh, North Carolina. It wraps Oct. 11 in Houston.

Perry and Ferras met in 2007 when they were both signed to Capitol.

Capitol is one of many labels under Universal Music Group, home to Def Jam and Republic Records.

One of the examples of the dormant tourist attraction is the Kereban Langit Temple located at Sading village, Mengwi.

Based on observation, this temple is rarely visited by travelers. Most of the visitors come to say prayers or melukat (purificatory rite) in the springs at the local temple.

The sign indicating if this temple is tourist attraction is only a signpost. Road access to the temple is relatively narrow because only has the width of 4 or 5 meters. Similarly, the parking space is less spacious and it lacks of supporting infrastructure.

Spokesperson of the Badung government, AA Gede Raka Yuda, said on Tuesday (Jun 17) that his party did not dismiss such condition. According to him, not all attractions in Ba-

dung could indeed develop well and bring in visitors.

Raka Yuda accompanied by the Division Head of Tourist Object and Attractions, the Badung Government Tourism Office, I Gde Made Suastika, said that to become a tourist object there were absolute requirements to be complied with including the attraction, accessibility and supporting facilities needed by travelers. “Yes, I truly realize if the Kereban Langit Temple does not meet some requirements. Later, this condition will be evaluated,” he said.

Suastika revealed that in 2014 the Badung government would conduct an evaluation against the 33 tourist attractions in Badung. It was meant to re-inventory the potential of tourist objects. When asked if there was the possibility

for a number of attractions to be removed, Suastika was reluctant to answer. “Clearly, we will make an evaluation this year,” he said.

Meanwhile, a legislator of Badung House, Putu Parwata, said the government was supposed to make a re-evaluation or assessment against the development of tourist object in Badung. According to him, the current condition indicated the asynchronous program having been implemented by the government. The government should arrange a planning on an integrated tourism resort development.

“With a budget of around IDR 7 billion, the tourism promotion gets the allocation of IDR 3 billion, while the remaining is utilized for tourist attraction development. So, I think this still needs reconsidering,” he said.

His party admitted that he did not agree if a tourist attraction would be removed. On the contrary, the Badung government should make improvement in the sector that should get the attention if it is indeed committed to the development of tourist attraction. (kmb25)
