Forbes: Jay Z and Beyonce worth a combined $1.16 billion

NEW YORK — Jay Z and Beyonce are a billiondollar couple according to one estimate. Forbes puts the combined wealth of the married superstars at $1.16 billion. The magazine estimates Jay Z’s fortune at $810 million. It says Beyonce has amassed $350 million. Forbes says most of Jay Z’s money is involved in Roc Nation and his other companies. Both the rapper and the singer also have a significant stake in the Tidal streaming music service. Jay Z signed a 10-year pact with Live Nation to partner on concert events worth $200 million. The couple has a 5-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy. Beyonce is pregnant with twins. (rtr)

Rampant coastal conversion threats existence of fishermen

MANGUPURA - Currently, many coastal areas commonly used as a venue of activity by fishermen group have been converted into a restaurant or hotel property. Definitely, this condition will become a ‘threat’ for the presence of fishermen that usually had some activities there.

Head of the Badung Fishery Agency, I Putu Oka Swadiana, said on Wednesday (May 16) that he did not deny the phenomenon. Admittedly, many coastal areas are even taken advantage by other parties and not by fishermen. To that end, the measure of forming a regional bylaw on fishermen is considered very positive to secure coastal areas. Without such protection, the existing coast is feared to gradually run out. Therefore, the regional bylaw on fishermen which is now in the hands of the House of Representatives is expected to slow down the conversion. “We have submitted the regional bylaw draft and it is now still under discussion at the parliament,” he said. Therefore, the implementation of Badung Marine Festival (BBF) started on Friday (May 19) is also expected to empower the existence of coastal com-

munity. Since it stays relatively new, the event to be followed by a number of foreign participants remains in the stage of introduction. “Since this is for the first time, we do not have the right icon and it’s still in the introduction stage,” he said. According to Oka Swadiana, other than maximizing the marine potential owned by Badung, this activity is also expected to be able to increase the number of tourist visit to Bali. Various coastal potentials owned by Badung will be displayed in this event. For instance, there is a surfing contest in Kuta, presentation of seafood on Pandawa Beach as well as various other interesting events scattered on the beaches of Badung. “At this moment, possibly the trade mark that can be used is the dragon boat festival, where the activities to be held from Cemagi to Kedonganan Beach will also be followed by some foreign participants,” he said. As it is newly held, in the future the committee will involve more fisherman groups including traditional activities. Involving the fishermen group, in this case, for example, is by holding a competition to make nets or doing traditional fishing activities in general. Coffee factory at Mengani lacks of raw materials

Production under 1,000 tons, while processing capacity 3,000 tons

BANGLI - Arabica coffee processing factory at Mengani, Kintamani, all this time managed by the regional-owned enterprise (Perusda BMB) in cooperation with third party, PT Qahwa, cannot produce optimally. The lack of raw material for coffee is the main obstacle to the maximum production of the factory. Supervisory Board of the Perusda BMB who is also the Head of Economic Affairs, Luh Ketut Wardani, said on Wednesday (May 17) that all this time the raw materials that can be processed in the Arabica coffee factory at Mengani amounts to less than 1,000 tons per year. Actually, the factory has now added with a processing machine with large capacity of up to 3,000 tons. The lack of coffee raw materials from farmers is recognized as the main obstacle to achieve maximum coffee production in the factory. Luh Wardani said the difficulty to get raw materials happens because the coffee production of farmers in Kintamani has decreased since the past few years. Besides, the difficulty to get raw materials also occurs because quite a lot of coffee farmers in Kintamani tend to sell their crops to small coffee processing factories at some villages. “Actually, the coffee processing factory at Mengani dares to buy farmers’ crops at an expensive price of IDR 9,000 per kilogram. However, farmers prefer to sell their crops to small

factories because they feel uncomfortable with the collectors having become their partner for long time,” he explained. In order to get the coffee raw materials to be processed at Mengani coffee factory, Perusda BMB along with PT Qahwa has been trying to proactively buy coffee to farmers’ plantation in Kintamani. Moreover, such an effort is also carried out to the neighboring district equally producing coffee such as Badung. Yet, Wardani admitted such an effort has not produced maximum results. “Many investments have been made by PT Qahwa to increase productivity all this time by repairing the equipment and machinery in the factory including hiring many new employees. Unfortunately, we are constrained by the supply of raw materials,” he said. Under these conditions, according to Wardani, the only effort made by the district government to make the coffee processing plant at Mengani continuously produce is by optimizing the coffee production of farmers. Through the agriculture, fishery and maritime affairs, the efforts attempted are to improve the pattern of cultivation and giving counseling so that farmers are no longer to cut down their coffee crops to be replaced with tangerine, including inviting farmers to sell their crops to the factory at Mengani. Dolphins throng waters of Klungkung Fishermen choose to stop activities

SEMARAPURA - The presence of dolphins around the waters of Klungkung has a negative impact on the fish catch of fishermen. Apart from consuming their fish catch, the dolphins often attack their fishing nets that have caught fish. So, this condition also becomes a consideration for fishermen to stop fishing for a while. A fisherman of Kusamba Beach, Wayan Karinu, admitted to switch

profession into freight porter. It happens because the fish catch of fishermen declined drastically recently. Moreover, there are fishermen returning home without a single fish. “This has happened since two years ago. Every year the number of dolphins continues to increase so that our catch continues to decline,” said Wayan Karinu when chatting on Kusamba Beach, on Wednesday (May 17).

Every time going to sea, fishermen have to spend fuel cost at IDR 200,000. “Our fishing nets are often damaged by dolphins if we get fish. The fish we have caught were savored and some others escaped. So, we decided not to go to sea,” he said. When not going to sea, he admitted to spend his time by chatting with fellow fishermen on the beach while repairing fishing

gears. However, there are also fishermen choosing to be freight or boat porter. The income of freight porters on Kusamba Beach is quite tempting. A porter can earn an income of IDR 100,000 for half a day only. “The work as freight porter on Kusamba Beach is quite heavy. If the waves are large, it will be more difficult to transport goods to boat,” he explained.

The day-off taken by many fishermen has an impact on the circulation of fish in the market. According to him, more fish sold in Klungkung are currently brought in from Karangasem and Java. The fish imported from Karangasem is fresh while those brought in from Java is frozen. “Fish boiling houses mostly use frozen fish from Java,” he said. (dwa)

Heart-shaped diamond sells for $13M, under auction estimate

GENEVA — A heart-shaped diamond billed as the largest of its kind to be auctioned off sold for less than the pre-sale estimate Wednesday, fetching a hammer price of 13 million Swiss francs (about $13.3 million.)

The 92-carat “La Legende” was the standout piece among some 250 jewels put on the block during the day at Christie’s in Geneva. It had been expected to go for $14 million to $20 million. The diamond dangles from a pearl necklace in a piece designed by Paris’ centuries-old Boehmer & Bassenge jewelers. Christie’s said that including the buyer’s premium, the Legende sold for $15 million — a new high for a heart-shaped diamond sold at auction. The previous record had been set six years ago at Christie’s, with a 56-carat stone that sold for $10.9 million.

Francois Curiel, the Asia-Pacific chairman for Christie’s, said the sale overall reaped $93 million. He declined to identify the buyer of the standout stone. But he said those who made purchases in the auction came from all around. “There were quite a few Chinese buyers, but maybe a little bit less then we’ve had normally,” he said. “America and Europe dominated.” The sale capped two days of high-profile jewelry auctions in Geneva. A 14.54-carat flawless Fancy Vivid Blue diamond earring that was the headline offering Tuesday at rival Sotheby’s also fell short of its pre-sale estimate. Must balance physical and spiritual development DENPASAR - Bali is very well known throughout the world for its cultural tourism and the arts as one of the cultural elements that is on the vanguard of maintaining the culture. Therefore, in addition to paying attention to the society, government, and progress of Bali in terms of technology and security, as well as the primary and secondary needs of the people of this island, the future leaders must also be able to fid a balance between physical and spiritual necessities.

“Physical or primary needs such as the development of buildings and infrastructure, need to be balanced with secondary needs like art, culture, spirituality and beliefs. I think this is true everywhere but because Bali is known for its art and culture that retains the values of local wisdom though farming, rituals, ceremonies, strong faith in God, it is these things that make it different than other tourist destinations”, said the Rector of ISI Denpasar, Prof. Dr. I Gede Arya Sugiartha, on Monday (May 15). Although there have been some efforts made, they have not been implemented according to the aims and expectations of the Balinese people in general. “The upstream of Bali’s development lies in culture, therefor the building up of culture through the arts and the spirituality of the Balinese people should be considered first. Supporting culture and spirituality in a way that is suitable to the values of the Balinese people should be made a priority” he said. With the right attitude, he added, skills and knowledge can be used for the good. Also if the leaders find a balance between logic, ethics and aesthetics, in structuring community life, Bali will undoubtedly last forever. “If we only develop logic, but forget to build on ethics and aesthetics, I do think we will be balanced. We will be unable to work towards the aspirations of those who came before us. There are not many great discoveries built on logic alone, great things are found using a basis of the good aesthetic value of art and culture in maintaining the balance of life between the macrocosm and microcosm. GIANYAR - Saba village has various potentials that can be developed in order to improve people’s welfare. The potentials are ranging from agriculture, home industry to tourism. In relation to the potential development, Saba village government focuses on community empowerment effort in a community so that they have capability and equality to other stakeholders. BENTONVILLE — Wal-Mart delivered first-quarter earnings that show how it’s winning over shoppers at stores and online, even in an increasingly competitive retail landscape. The world’s largest retailer beat Wall Street estimates and delivered another solid gain in comparablestore sales. Customer traffic at WalMart also rose while other major retailers like Macy’s and Target suffered declines. And online sales surged 63 percent, more than doubling the previous quarter’s digital sales. The majority of the online sales growth was organic through Walmart.com. Wal-Mart, like other traditional retailers, has played catch-up to Amazon.com and other online companies. It has retooled how it operates online and accelerated that shift by buying already successful online operators. ECB could start considering stimulus exit at next meeting

FRANKFURT — Officials at the European Central Bank have indicated that their next meeting would be a good time to consider shifting toward an exit from the stimulus efforts that have boosted the economy. A written account of the April 27 meeting showed members of the bank’s ratesetting council expect that if the economic recovery keeps going, they would have to consider “adjusting the present formulation” of their stance. The ECB rate-setters will have new forecasts for inflation and growth at that

meeting, which would put the council “in a better position to take stock.” The ECB has said it plans to keep pumping 60 billion euros ($67 billion) in newly printed money into the economy through bond purchases at least through the end of the year. Markets are awaiting more clarity about when that program will end. Phasing out the bond purchases would have wide-ranging effects on markets, investors and governments. The purchases have been holding down longer-term interest rates and flooding the banking system with cash in hopes of promoting lending to

businesses so they can expand and hire. Tapering the purchases would mean higher interest costs for long-term borrowers such as governments and people who buy homes through mortgages. To Maintain Peace, Residents Preserve Tradition of Burning “Memedi”

Bungaya customary village, Bebandem, Karangasem, is one of the old villages in Bali. Every customary and religious ritual at the village takes place uniquely. One of them can be seen in the implementation of usaba mumu or familiarly known as usaba memedi. It’s named as usaba memedi because the ritual is marked with the ‘burning’ of memedi (spirits). The procession is carried out amid the pounding sounds of kulkul (wooden split drum) throughout customary hamlet and clan temples at night. How does the implementation look like?

Usaba mumu is held once a year falling in January (Balinese seventh month). This year, peak of the implementation took place on Wednesday (Jan. 18). Fifteen days in advance, residents have looked for ritual paraphernalia ingredients such as young coconut leaf, fruit, palm leaf and others at local customary village. Then, three days before the peak of procession, all the people create the figure of memedi made from various leaves, such as the leaf of aba, bamboo, eggplant and pulet. The leaves are arranged in such a way to form humanoid figure coming with tribal marking by using lime betel. “This paraphernalia is ritualized first in the morning at respective family temple. At night, it is taken out for the ritual procession,” said the apparatus of Bungaya customary village, I Gede Adi Krisna Widana, just before the peak of the ritual began. At the peak of usaba mumu, thousands of families at Bungaya village have been busy with ritual preparations from the morning. Krisna said that before sunrise, the whole customary village apparatus come out to village temple or Bale Agung temple to prepare all means of rituals such as pras daksina, bayuan and kelanan. (guard) made from palm tree stem from the morning. It is made to resemble a human figure decorated with various means such as coconut leaf arrangement and wild cherry fruit. The penyagaan means that people must be able to control their passions as preparation to pay homage. The guard figure is placed in front of their respective alley. It will be dismantled at midday, after going through particular ritual. “According to local belief, all the guard figures can later be mounted again in paddy fields or anywhere in order to avoid any catastrophe,” said Krisna. In the afternoon, the whole community, especially women, will say prayers at Pemuhunan Temple. This temple is quite unique

located under a sacred banyan tree without any shrines. Prior to the prayers, thousands of women are sitting around a banyan tree along with their offerings before the worship around 22:00 On the other hand, men are preparing the memedi figure that will be burned at the location of guard figure in the morning. After completing the ritual at the Pemuhunan Temple, then memedi figure is burned simultaneously marked with the sounds of kulkul at 15 customary hamlets and clan temples that keep pounding until the procession is over. Burning the memedi figure has the meaning of burning all the natures of anger and negative traits in human beings, so that people can live harmonious and peaceful life.

The ashes are ritualized again after formed into human figure at the location of burning. When everything is over, the offerings prepared are immediately offered at the ashmade figure. “After the procession, it usually rains at the night symbolizing if the ritual has run smoothly,” said Krisna. Three days after this procession, the entire local residents say prayers at the village temple. This process is called ngelisin where all pilgrims invoke holy water. After making introspection for three days, all the local people go through life with a new atmosphere. Basically, this procession symbolizes the journey of self-control and restores the butha kala to maintain the balance of macrocosm and microcosm. (kmb)

INDIANA - Fernando Alonso said on Wednesday he is not yet comfortable with oval racing as the Spanish driver races to cram years of learning into a few weeks of preparation for this year’s Indianapolis 500. Alonso, a two-times Formula One world champion who only settled into the cockpit of an IndyCar for the first time two weeks ago, said he has plenty of work to do before being ready for the May 28 race. “Happy where I am now ... but definitely not comfortable,” Alonso told reporters ahead of Wednesday’s practice at the sprawling 2.5 mile (4.02 km) oval speedway. Alonso, 35, had his first test session in an IndyCar two weeks ago and on Monday during his first official practice set the pace in the rookie orientation session with a speed of 221.634 miles per hour. He then got a taste of what competing in “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” is like on Tuesday as nearly all 33 cars were on the track at once for what is known as ‘Happy Hour.’ Speeding around the track in traffic gave Alonso a closer glimpse into oval racing and he said he was starting to get used to what he described as a strange feeling given the different technique needed to drive an IndyCar. “Obviously if you develop your whole career in the Formula One in Europe, you come here, in the oval racing, the car felt not natural to drive because, you know, the car turns left by itself,” said Alonso. “That’s a little bit strange when you approach turn one in the first lap. “But I had a good preparation in the simulator, a lot of information from the team in the last couple of weeks. MUMBAI - Improving wages and ensuring job security are key elements of Mahfuza Akhter Kiron’s plans to develop women’s football in Asia, the continent’s newly elected representative to the FIFA Council has told Reuters in an interview. The 50-year-old from Bangladesh beat prominent women’s soccer advocate Moya Dodd of Australia by 27 votes to 17 at this month’s election in Manama for the women’s slot representing Asia on FIFA’s ruling body. Women’s football is at a developed stage in only a handful of Asian nations and struggles to get even a foothold in conservative Arab countries, where women exercising in public is a rare sight in much of the region. Mahfuza is also dismayed by the disparity in salaries of men and women in the game. “The wages must be improved and there has to be job security for women footballers,” she said, pointing out that while male footballers earn four-five million Bangladesh taka ($50,000-$60,000) annually their women counterparts receive about 20,000 taka. “It’s completely insane. Why would a woman be interested in football? We have to develop our football in a way where women can consider it as a career option. “I am putting em-

phasis on that. Former players should have financial security in the form of pensions. We have to boost the opportunities to play, organise more tournaments, more leagues.” Mahfuza said football had the ability to empower women and called on administrators to start building awareness of how the game can have a positive impact on girls’ lives. “We have lot of religious and social barriers in a lot of conservative countries.
