Forbes: Jay Z and Beyonce worth a combined $1.16 billion

NEW YORK — Jay Z and Beyonce are a billiondollar couple according to one estimate.

Forbes puts the combined wealth of the married superstars at $1.16 billion. The magazine estimates Jay Z’s fortune at $810 million. It says Beyonce has amassed $350 million.

Forbes says most of Jay Z’s money is involved in Roc Nation and his other companies. Both the rapper and the singer also have a significant stake in the Tidal streaming music service.

Jay Z signed a 10-year pact with Live Nation to partner on concert events worth $200 million.

The couple has a 5-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy. Beyonce is pregnant with twins. (rtr)

Japan princess to wed, sparking debate on shrinking royal family

TOKYO - Japanese Princess Mako, the eldest granddaughter of Emperor Akihito, will wed a former college classmate, Japanese media reported, heating up debate on the evershrinking royal family since she must become a commoner after marriage.

Japan’s cabinet is expected to approve a bill on Friday to allow Akihito, 83, to step down, the first abdication by a Japanese emperor in nearly two centuries, after he said last August he feared age would make it hard to fulfil his duties.

Kimmel will return to host 2018 Oscars after handling on-stage blunder

LOS ANGELES - Late night host Jimmy Kimmel will return to helm the 2018 Academy Awards, organizers of the event said Tuesday, after the late night host artfully handled the biggest blunder in Oscars history this year.

Kimmel hosted the Oscars for the first time this year in which an embarrassing on-stage mix-up led to presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway mistakenly being given the wrong envelope and announcing “La La Land” as the winner of best picture, the top award of the night.

The actual winner, announced minutes later, was “Moonlight.”

Kimmel, host of “Jimmy Kim-

mel Live!” on ABC, the same network that airs the Oscars ceremony every year, said in a statement on Tuesday that hosting the Oscars “was a highlight of my career.”

“If you think we screwed up the ending this year, wait until you see what we have planned for the 90th anniversary show!” Kimmel added.

Michael De Luca and Jennifer Todd will also return to produce the live show. The Oscars will be held on March 4 at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre.

The Oscars, organized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, is Hollywood’s most

prestigious film awards ceremony.

Amid the on-stage chaos during the best picture announcement watched live by millions of viewers this year, Kimmel quickly ran on stage and injected a dose of humor by quipping to Beatty, “Warren, what did you do?”

He added, “The good news is that we got to see some extra speeches. I knew I would screw this show up.”

Kimmel and the show received generally positive reviews but despite the heart-stopping finale that made for great live television, this year’s Oscars drew the lowest U.S. audience since 2008, with 32.9 million viewers. (rtr)

Rampant coastal conversion threats existence of fishermen

MANGUPURA - Currently, many coastal areas commonly used as a venue of activity by fishermen group have been converted into a restaurant or hotel property. Definitely, this condition will become a ‘threat’ for the presence of fishermen that usually had some activities there.

Head of the Badung Fishery Agency, I Putu Oka Swadiana, said on Wednesday (May 16) that he did not deny the phenomenon. Admittedly, many coastal areas are even taken advantage by other parties and not by fishermen. To that end, the measure of forming a regional bylaw on fishermen is considered very positive to secure coastal areas. Without such protection, the existing coast is feared to gradually run out. Therefore, the regional bylaw on fishermen which is now in the hands of the House of Representatives is expected to slow down the conversion.

“We have submitted the regional bylaw draft and it is now still under discussion at the parliament,” he said. Therefore, the implementation of Badung Marine Festival (BBF) started on Friday (May 19) is also expected to empower the existence of coastal com-

munity. Since it stays relatively new, the event to be followed by a number of foreign participants remains in the stage of introduction. “Since this is for the first time, we do not have the right icon and it’s still in the introduction stage,” he said.

According to Oka Swadiana, other than maximizing the marine potential owned by Badung, this activity is also expected to be able to increase the number of tourist visit to Bali. Various coastal potentials owned

by Badung will be displayed in this event. For instance, there is a surfing contest in Kuta, presentation of seafood on Pandawa Beach as well as various other interesting events scattered on the beaches of Badung.

“At this moment, possibly the trade mark that can be used is the dragon boat festival, where the activities to be held from Cemagi to Kedonganan Beach will also be followed by some foreign participants,” he said.

As it is newly held, in the future the committee will involve more fisherman groups including traditional activities. Involving the fishermen group, in this case, for example, is by holding a competition to make nets or doing traditional fishing activities in general. For now, the activities supported by central government are still scattered. In the future, they will probably be organized at a single venue. (kmb23)

Coffee factory at Mengani lacks of raw materials

Production under 1,000 tons, while processing capacity 3,000 tons

BANGLI - Arabica coffee processing factory at Mengani, Kintamani, all this time managed by the regional-owned enterprise (Perusda BMB) in cooperation with third party, PT Qahwa, cannot produce optimally. The lack of raw material for coffee is the main obstacle to the maximum production of the factory.

Supervisory Board of the Perusda BMB who is also the Head of Economic Affairs, Luh Ketut Wardani, said on Wednesday (May 17) that all this time the raw materials that can be processed in the Arabica coffee factory at Mengani amounts to less than 1,000 tons per year.

Actually, the factory has now added with a processing machine with large capacity of up to 3,000 tons. The lack of coffee raw materials from farmers is recognized as the main obstacle to achieve maximum coffee production in the factory.

Luh Wardani said the difficulty to get raw materials happens because the coffee production of farmers in Kintamani has decreased since the past few years.

Besides, the difficulty to get raw materials also occurs because quite a lot of coffee farmers in Kintamani tend to sell their crops to small coffee processing factories at some villages.

“Actually, the coffee processing factory at Mengani dares to buy farmers’ crops at an expensive price of IDR 9,000 per kilogram. However, farmers prefer to sell their crops to small

factories because they feel uncomfortable with the collectors having become their partner for long time,” he explained.

In order to get the coffee raw materials to be processed at Mengani coffee factory, Perusda BMB along with PT Qahwa has been trying to proactively buy coffee to farmers’ plantation in Kintamani. Moreover, such an effort is also carried out to the neighboring district equally producing coffee such as Badung.

Yet, Wardani admitted such an effort has not produced maximum results.

“Many investments have been made by PT Qahwa to increase productivity all this time by repairing the equipment and machinery in the factory including hiring many new employees. Unfortunately, we are constrained by the supply of raw materials,” he said.

Under these conditions, according to Wardani, the only effort made by the district government to make the coffee processing plant at Mengani continuously produce is by optimizing the coffee production of farmers. Through the agriculture, fishery and maritime affairs, the efforts attempted are to improve the pattern of cultivation and giving counseling so that farmers are no longer to cut down their coffee crops to be replaced with tangerine, including inviting farmers to sell their crops to the factory at Mengani. Dolphins throng waters of Klungkung Fishermen choose to stop activities

SEMARAPURA - The presence of dolphins around the waters of Klungkung has a negative impact on the fish catch of fishermen. Apart from consuming their fish catch, the dolphins often attack their fishing nets that have caught fish. So, this condition also becomes a consideration for fishermen to stop fishing for a while.

A fisherman of Kusamba Beach, Wayan Karinu, admitted to switch

profession into freight porter. It happens because the fish catch of fishermen declined drastically recently. Moreover, there are fishermen returning home without a single fish. “This has happened since two years ago. Every year the number of dolphins continues to increase so that our catch continues to decline,” said Wayan Karinu when chatting on Kusamba Beach, on Wednesday (May 17).

Every time going to sea, fishermen have to spend fuel cost at IDR 200,000. “Our fishing nets are often damaged by dolphins if we get fish. The fish we have caught were savored and some others escaped.

So, we decided not to go to sea,” he said.

When not going to sea, he admitted to spend his time by chatting with fellow fishermen on the beach while repairing fishing

gears. However, there are also fishermen choosing to be freight or boat porter. The income of freight porters on Kusamba Beach is quite tempting. A porter can earn an income of IDR 100,000 for half a day only. “The work as freight porter on Kusamba Beach is quite heavy. If the waves are large, it will be more difficult to transport goods to boat,” he explained.

The day-off taken by many fishermen has an impact on the circulation of fish in the market.

According to him, more fish sold in Klungkung are currently brought in from Karangasem and Java. The fish imported from Karangasem is fresh while those brought in from Java is frozen.

“Fish boiling houses mostly use frozen fish from Java,” he said. (dwa)

Heart-shaped diamond sells for $13M, under auction estimate

GENEVA — A heart-shaped diamond billed as the largest of its kind to be auctioned off sold for less than the pre-sale estimate Wednesday, fetching a hammer price of 13 million Swiss francs (about $13.3 million.)

The 92-carat “La Legende” was the standout piece among some 250 jewels put on the block during the day at Christie’s in Geneva. It had been expected to go for $14 million to $20 million.

The diamond dangles from a pearl necklace in a piece designed by Paris’ centuries-old Boehmer & Bassenge jewelers.

Christie’s said that including the buyer’s premium, the Legende sold for $15 million — a new high for a heart-shaped diamond sold at auction. The previous record had been set six years ago at Christie’s, with a 56-carat stone that sold for $10.9 million.

Francois Curiel, the Asia-Pacific chairman for Christie’s, said the sale overall reaped $93 million.

He declined to identify the buyer of the standout stone. But he said those who made purchases in the auction came from all around.

“There were quite a few Chinese buyers, but maybe a little bit less then we’ve had normally,” he said. “America and Europe dominated.”

The sale capped two days of high-profile jewelry auctions in Geneva.

A 14.54-carat flawless Fancy Vivid Blue diamond earring that was the headline offering Tuesday at rival Sotheby’s also fell short of its pre-sale estimate.

It was paired with a pear-shaped pink diamond earring.

Must balance physical and spiritual development DENPASAR - Bali is very well known throughout the world for its cultural tourism and the arts as one of the cultural elements that is on the vanguard of maintaining the culture.

Therefore, in addition to paying attention to the society, government, and progress of Bali in terms of technology and security, as well as the primary and secondary needs of the people of this island, the future leaders must also be able to fid a balance between physical and spiritual necessities.

“Physical or primary needs such as the development of buildings and infrastructure, need to be balanced with secondary needs like art, culture, spirituality and beliefs. I think this is true everywhere but because Bali is known for its art and culture that retains the values of local wisdom though farming, rituals, ceremonies, strong faith in God, it is these things that make it different than other tourist destinations”, said the Rector of ISI Denpasar, Prof. Dr. I Gede Arya Sugiartha, on Monday (May 15).

Moreover, continued Sugiartha, maintaining the land of Bali does not just mean building with concrete and iron. It is also important to build with rituals as an expression of the Balinese people’s love for the land of Bali and the spiritual aspects of this land. These rituals and ceremonies require certain complementary features such as dance, gamelan and chanting I order for these rituals to run according to the integrated ritual tradition.

From the beginning of tourism on Bali, culture-based tourism has been the buzz word.

Therefore, in order for Bali to develop in the future, arts and culture need to be built up along with supporting tourism facilities. “Without art and culture, we will not be able to sustain Bali as we hope. The future leaders of Bali therefor need to be able to protect – in a transparent and open manner, the art and culture of Bali, through the development of religious rituals as an expression of their love for the spiritual aspects of Bali” he said.

Rector Sugiartha added that he does not feel that the leaders of Bali have been doing their best to balance the physical and spiritual aspects of the island. Although there have been some efforts made, they have not been implemented according to the aims and expectations of the Balinese people in general.

“The upstream of Bali’s development lies in culture, therefor the building up of culture through the arts and the spirituality of the Balinese people should be considered first. Supporting culture and spirituality in a way that is suitable to the values of the Balinese people should be made a priority” he said.

With the right attitude, he added, skills and knowledge can be used for the good. Also if the leaders find a balance between logic, ethics and aesthetics, in structuring community life, Bali will undoubtedly last forever.

“If we only develop logic, but forget to build on ethics and aesthetics, I do think we will be balanced.

We will be unable to work towards the aspirations of those who came before us. There are not many great discoveries built on logic alone, great things are found using a basis of the good aesthetic value of art and culture in maintaining the balance of life between the macrocosm and microcosm. Whoever will lead Bali in the future, must create balance” he concluded. (win)

GIANYAR - Saba village has various potentials that can be developed in order to improve people’s welfare. The potentials are ranging from agriculture, home industry to tourism. In relation to the potential development, Saba village government focuses on community empowerment effort in a community so that they have capability and equality to other stakeholders.

This was revealed by the headman of Saba, I Gusti Ngurah Mahendradata, on Tuesday (May 16).

He explained that the potential in agriculture includes corn, banana and coconut plantation. In the livestock sector, the people of Saba village raise Bali cattle that are kept individually or in groups through the Simantri program. On the other hand, Saba villagers also engage in home industry like the makers of peanut chips and ritual paraphernalia.

Fight against fake news, Bali police launch Salak Bali application DENPASAR - Bali police launched police service application system (Salak) Bali on Wednesday (May 17). One of the goals of this program is to combat fake news and improve services to the community.

Bali Police Chief, Dr. Petrus Reinhard Golose, said that Salak Bali is one of the creative breakthroughs carried out by Division Head of Technology and Information. Besides, it is included in the promoter program of the national police chief.

“Salak Bali application is a very easy system of reports or complaint reception process. This program has also been applied by Denpasar and Klungkung police. I have asked all the district police to apply this application. The application belonging to district police should not be activated, just activate this one,” he said.

With this application, provincial police or district police can spread the official news to the public. In addition, it can also identify whether the news circulating through social media is fake or correct. However, it will be confirmed first to Jakarta.

AMLAPURA - Head of the Singaraja Immigration Office, Viktor Manurung, just came down to Karangasem on Tuesday (May 16). He came down to follow up the report regarding the presence of foreigner suspected of violating residence permit that is misused to work at a hotel at Buitan, Manggis since eight months ago. The immigration office then conducted a coordination meeting to establish the foreigner oversight team (Tim Pora) in the Karangasem area.

To oversee foreign workers in Karangasem region, his office claimed to have held coordination meeting with related institutions such as the national and political unity agency (Kesbangpolinmas), manpower and transmigration office, Karangasem police, 1623/ Karangasem military district and other related institutions at Karangasem regent’s office. It also included the representatives of hoteliers in Karangasem. People’s welfare section of the government of Karangasem at that time reported to the Singaraja immigration office related to the presence of foreigner suspected of violating the residence

permit used to work at one of the hotels at Buitan Beach, Manggis.

Currently, the suspected foreigner is still under supervision of the government and police authority.

From the information or reports submitted by the people’s welfare section, the foreigner is mentioned to have rented a house and worked at a hotel at Buitan since eight months ago.

Currently, his activities are supervised by the government of Karangasem and police authority. Head of the Singaraja Immigration Office, Viktor Manurung, confirmed that his office would immediately follow up the report by checking it out into the field. Inspection at exit gates of Gilimanuk tightened NEGARA - A number of fugitives escaping from the area of Denpasar on Tuesday (May 16) also get the attention from the ranks of Jembrana police. In accordance with the instructions of the Chief of Jembrana Police, Djoni Widodo, a number of exit points and borders at Gilimanuk Harbor are tightened up.

At Gilimanuk, there are totally 30 additional personnel on duty from riot squad of Jembrana police. From the usual 90 personnel, it is now being increased to 120 personnel to conduct the inspection.

While tensions between the competing interests of indigenous landholders, pastoral leaseholders and miners on government-controlled land are common, Forrest’s approach represents one of the first known examples of a non-Aboriginal successfully using rights afforded to indigenous people to their own advantage.

Native title is a legal doctrine in Australia that recognises indigenous rights to certain parcels of land.

Forrest’s use of it is not illegal, but it adds to the fractious relationship he has with some indigenous groups. Different groups have raised concerns over Forrest’s cattle interests and have battled over land rights with the company he founded and chairs - Fortescue Metals Group, the world’s fourth biggest iron ore miner.

A spokeswoman for Forrest said the issue was about complying with mining regulations.

“It is neither a matter of using

native title law nor objecting to prospecting,” said the spokeswoman.

She said there was support for Forrest’s position within the Thalanyji people who hold native title under some of his cattle stations.

The farms operated with the utmost respect for the environment, she added.

But Matthew Slack, the head of the Buurabalayji Thalanyji Aboriginal Corp which oversees native title for the indigenous landowners, said it was “pretty rich” for Forrest to use rights designed to protect indigenous interests.

Thalanyji were also concerned about cattle numbers and water use at Forrest’s 2,400 square km (927 sq mile) Minderoo pastoral lease in Western Australia’s Pilbara district, he said.

BUSINESS Wal-Mart’s online sales surge, tops 1Q expectations

BENTONVILLE — Wal-Mart delivered first-quarter earnings that show how it’s winning over shoppers at stores and online, even in an increasingly competitive retail landscape.

The world’s largest retailer beat Wall Street estimates and delivered another solid gain in comparablestore sales. Customer traffic at WalMart also rose while other major retailers like Macy’s and Target suffered declines.

And online sales surged 63 percent, more than doubling the previous quarter’s digital sales.

The majority of the online sales growth was organic through Walmart.com.

Wal-Mart, like other traditional retailers, has played catch-up to Amazon.com and other online companies. It has retooled how it operates online and accelerated that shift by buying already successful online operators.

Wal-Mart spent more than $3 billion for Jet.com in its bid to lure younger and more affluent customers. Then it bought ShoeBuy.com for $70 million and the outdoor and gear seller Moosejaw for $51 million. In March, it bought the trendy clothing seller ModCloth.

The clothing sites are operating as stand-alone operators and appeal to millennial shoppers. Wal-Mart also raised its stake in JD.com, China’s No. 2 e-commerce site.

Under Marc Lore, the founder of Jet.com who is now CEO of Walmart.com, the company is still looking for new startups to buy.

Since he joined the company, the number of items available on its

third-party online marketplace has soared to more than 50 million.

That’s up 10 million from a year ago. Wal-Mart is working to accelerate the integration between Wal-Mart.com and Jet.com, and trying to take advantage of its scale in areas like shipping.

It’s also aggressively hunting Amazon shoppers, scrapping a feebased shipping program earlier this year in favor of free, two-day shipping for online orders of its most popular items with a minimum purchase order of $35.

Amazon Prime costs $99 a year, but comes with services like streaming music and video. Amazon has countered, lowering the free-shipping minimum purchase price for non-members.

In April, Wal-Mart also began offering discounts on thousands of online-only items when customers elect to have them shipped to one of the company’s stores for pickup — cheaper for the company than delivering to people’s homes. WalMart plans to expand the price cuts to more than a million items by the end of June.

ECB could start considering stimulus exit at next meeting

FRANKFURT — Officials at the European Central Bank have indicated that their next meeting would be a good time to consider shifting toward an exit from the stimulus efforts that have boosted the economy.

A written account of the April 27 meeting showed members of the bank’s ratesetting council expect that if the economic recovery keeps going, they would have to consider “adjusting the present formulation” of their stance.

The ECB rate-setters will have new forecasts for inflation and growth at that

meeting, which would put the council “in a better position to take stock.”

The ECB has said it plans to keep pumping 60 billion euros ($67 billion) in newly printed money into the economy through bond purchases at least through the end of the year. Markets are awaiting more clarity about when that program will end.

Phasing out the bond purchases would have wide-ranging effects on markets, investors and governments. The purchases have been holding down longer-term interest rates and flooding the banking system with cash in hopes of promoting lending to

businesses so they can expand and hire.

Tapering the purchases would mean higher interest costs for long-term borrowers such as governments and people who buy homes through mortgages. It would also increase returns to savers with conservative holdings and make it easier to fund pension savings plans. Ending the purchases would also be a prelude to the bank raising its main short-term interest rate benchmark, currently at a record low of zero.

The Frankfurt-based ECB is responsible for setting monetary policy for the 19 countries that use the euro currency. The

primary goal of its stimulus policies has been raising inflation sustainably toward the bank’s goal of just under 2 percent.

Current annual inflation of 1.9 percent in April is in line with that on paper. But the written account indicated that officials feel underlying inflationary pressures remain weak and that the recent upturn in inflation is not yet “durable and self-sustaining.”

To Maintain Peace, Residents Preserve Tradition of Burning “Memedi”

Bungaya customary village, Bebandem, Karangasem, is one of the old villages in Bali. Every customary and religious ritual at the village takes place uniquely. One of them can be seen in the implementation of usaba mumu or familiarly known as usaba memedi. It’s named as usaba memedi because the ritual is marked with the ‘burning’ of memedi (spirits). The procession is carried out amid the pounding sounds of kulkul (wooden split drum) throughout customary hamlet and clan temples at night. How does the implementation look like?

Usaba mumu is held once a year falling in January (Balinese seventh month). This year, peak of the implementation took place on Wednesday (Jan. 18). Fifteen days in advance, residents have looked for ritual paraphernalia ingredients such as young coconut leaf, fruit, palm leaf and others at local customary village.

Then, three days before the peak of procession, all the people create the figure of memedi made from various leaves, such as the leaf of aba, bamboo, eggplant and pulet.

The leaves are arranged in such a way to form humanoid figure coming with tribal marking by using lime betel.

“This paraphernalia is ritualized first in the morning at respective family temple. At night, it is taken out for the ritual procession,” said the apparatus of Bungaya customary village, I Gede Adi Krisna Widana, just before the peak of the ritual began.

At the peak of usaba mumu, thousands of families at Bungaya village have been busy with ritual preparations from the morning.

Krisna said that before sunrise, the whole customary village apparatus come out to village temple or Bale Agung temple to prepare all means of rituals such as pras daksina, bayuan and kelanan.

(guard) made from palm tree stem from the morning. It is made to resemble a human figure decorated with various means such as coconut leaf arrangement and wild cherry fruit. The penyagaan means that people must be able to control their passions as preparation to pay homage.

The guard figure is placed in front of their respective alley. It will be dismantled at midday, after going through particular ritual. “According to local belief, all the guard figures can later be mounted again in paddy fields or anywhere in order to avoid any catastrophe,” said Krisna.

In the afternoon, the whole community, especially women, will say prayers at Pemuhunan Temple. This temple is quite unique

located under a sacred banyan tree without any shrines. Prior to the prayers, thousands of women are sitting around a banyan tree along with their offerings before the worship around 22:00 On the other hand, men are preparing the memedi figure that will be burned at the location of guard figure in the morning. After completing the ritual at the Pemuhunan Temple, then memedi figure is burned simultaneously marked with the sounds of kulkul at 15 customary hamlets and clan temples that keep pounding until the procession is over.

Burning the memedi figure has the meaning of burning all the natures of anger and negative traits in human beings, so that people can live harmonious and peaceful life.

The ashes are ritualized again after formed into human figure at the location of burning. When everything is over, the offerings prepared are immediately offered at the ashmade figure. “After the procession, it usually rains at the night symbolizing if the ritual has run smoothly,” said Krisna.

Three days after this procession, the entire local residents say prayers at the village temple. This process is called ngelisin where all pilgrims invoke holy water. After making introspection for three days, all the local people go through life with a new atmosphere.

Basically, this procession symbolizes the journey of self-control and restores the butha kala to maintain the balance of macrocosm and microcosm. (kmb)

The government of Bangli, through the Culture and Tourism Agency, has provided guidance to the Pokdarwis regarding human resources, strengthening of the group and the ‘seven charms’ of tourism. “The Geopark Museum also informed them that the rocks that make up, selfie hills were formed 29,000 years ago” he added. ‘Bobby Three Sticks’ Mueller to probe RussiaTrump imbroglio

WASHINGTON - Former FBI director and prosecutor Robert Mueller, known for his independence in high-profile government investigations, is taking on a new challenge in the midst of a crisis that threatens the presidency of the United States.

Mueller, 72, was named on Wednesday by the Justice Department to probe alleged Russian efforts to sway November’s presidential election in favor of Donald Trump and to investigate whether there was any collusion between Trump’s campaign team and Moscow.

President Trump said in a statement there was no collusion between his campaign and “any foreign entity.”

Mueller is known by some as “Bobby Three Sticks” because of his full name - Robert Mueller III - a

Chicago federal prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald was appointed during the George W. Bush administration in 2003 to a similar role to investigate the leak of the identity of Valerie Plame, an undercover CIA officer whose husband had criticized Bush administration policies.

Fitzgerald indicted I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, a top aide to Vice President Dick Cheney. Bush granted Libby clemency from a prison sentence before he left office.

Robert Luskin, a Washington lawyer who defended Bush political adviser Karl Rove during Fitzgerald’s investigation, praised the choice of Mueller.

“I think it’s good across the board,” Luskin told Reuters. He described Mueller as “credible” and “independent” and said his appointment would be “good for the Department of Justice.”

Mueller, known for avoiding political controversy, took a stand in 2004 when he and then-deputy attorney general James Comey threatened to resign when the Bush White House sought to reauthorize a domestic wiretapping program that the Justice Department had deemed unconstitutional.

In his new role as special counsel, Mueller will have wide latitude to take the investigation wherever he thinks it should go and can use the full range of Justice Department investigative tools, said Jack Sharman, an attorney who served as special counsel during a probe into the Whitewater real-estate investments of President Bill Clinton in 1995. Two U.S. officials said on Monday Trump had disclosed classified information about a planned Islamic State operation to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov when they met last week, plunging the White House into a fresh controversy just four months into Trump’s tenure.

Trump, whose administration has been dogged by allegations that Russia helped him win the White House and that he and his allies are too cosy with Moscow, has defended his decision to discuss intelligence with the Russians after media reports of the meeting alarmed some U.S. and foreign politicians.

“I’ll be forced to issue him (Lavrov) with a reprimand because he did not share these secrets with us. Not with me, nor with representatives of Russia’s intelligence services. It was very bad of him.”

Putin, who still hopes Moscow can repair battered ties with the United States despite a deepening political scandal in the United States related to Trump’s purported Russia ties, said Moscow had rated Lavrov’s meeting with Trump highly.

If the Trump administration deemed it appropriate, Putin said Russia could hand over a transcript of Trump’s meeting with Lavrov to U.S. lawmakers to reassure them that no secrets were revealed.

INDIANA - Fernando Alonso said on Wednesday he is not yet comfortable with oval racing as the Spanish driver races to cram years of learning into a few weeks of preparation for this year’s Indianapolis 500.

Alonso, a two-times Formula One world champion who only settled into the cockpit of an IndyCar for the first time two weeks ago, said he has plenty of work to do before being ready for the May 28 race.

“Happy where I am now ... but definitely not comfortable,” Alonso told reporters ahead of Wednesday’s practice at the sprawling 2.5 mile (4.02 km) oval speedway.

Alonso, 35, had his first test session in an IndyCar two weeks ago and on Monday during his first official practice set the pace in the rookie orientation session with a speed of 221.634 miles per hour.

He then got a taste of what competing in “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” is like on Tuesday as nearly all 33 cars were on the track at once for what is known as ‘Happy Hour.’

Speeding around the track in traffic gave Alonso a closer glimpse into oval racing and he said he was starting to get used to what he described as a strange feeling given the different technique needed to drive an IndyCar. “Obviously if you develop your whole career in the Formula One in Europe, you come here, in the oval racing, the car felt not natural to drive because, you know, the car turns left by itself,” said Alonso.

“That’s a little bit strange when you approach turn one in the first lap.

“But I had a good preparation in the simulator, a lot of information from the team in the last couple of weeks. So I think I arrive a little bit prepared for the feeling that I was supposed to have.”

Alonso flew directly to Indianapolis from Barcelona after a 12th place finish at his home Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday ahead of what has been a whirlwind few days.

“The learning laps yesterday in traffic were very useful. I’m on the simulator in the mornings, on the car here in the afternoons. So plenty of time, plenty of running,” said Alonso.

“Not ready yet, but I think I will (be) for qualifying in the race.” (rtr)

MUMBAI - Improving wages and ensuring job security are key elements of Mahfuza Akhter Kiron’s plans to develop women’s football in Asia, the continent’s newly elected representative to the FIFA Council has told Reuters in an interview.

The 50-year-old from Bangladesh beat prominent women’s soccer advocate Moya Dodd of Australia by 27 votes to 17 at this month’s election in Manama for the women’s slot representing Asia on FIFA’s ruling body.

Women’s football is at a developed stage in only a handful of Asian nations and struggles to get even a foothold in conservative Arab countries, where women exercising in public is a rare sight in much of the region. Mahfuza is also dismayed by the disparity in salaries of men and women in the game.

“The wages must be improved and there has to be job security for women footballers,” she said, pointing out that while male footballers earn four-five million Bangladesh taka ($50,000-$60,000) annually their women counterparts receive about 20,000 taka.

“It’s completely insane. Why would a woman be interested in football? We have to develop our football in a way where women can consider it as a career option. “I am putting em-

phasis on that. Former players should have financial security in the form of pensions. We have to boost the opportunities to play, organise more tournaments, more leagues.”

Mahfuza said football had the ability to empower women and called on administrators to start building awareness of how the game can have a positive impact on girls’ lives.

“We have lot of religious and social barriers in a lot of conservative countries. It’s a very difficult fight,” she said in an interview from Dhaka. “The most important thing we need to do is hold more workshops and seminars and build awareness.

“We must make the parents understand that they must come out of it. If a girl plays football, she can be secured in every way in her life. A footballer will be more confident physically and mentally.”

With local laws prohibiting women from playing the game in some Arab countries, the administrators must work with the governments, according to Mahfuza, who has previously served on the organising committees for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada in 2015 and the last two Under-20 Women’s World Cups.

“If we look at South Asia, girls are married off at a very young age. And once they are married, they can’t play football as they might face a lot of problems in their families,” she added. While her win over Dodd raised quite a few eyebrows, Mahfuza said her hands-on experience had been the key to her victory.

“She (Dodd) is a former footballer and I have a good opinion about her,” Mahfuza said. “I told the members in my presentations that Moya Dodd has not worked from the level I aspire to do. “Her work was restricted to workshops and seminars. She has not worked at the grassroots level for football development.

“My work will start from there and I am confident I can work closely with people. I also promised to help them get sponsors for women and help them improve financially.” (rtr)

Tottenham Hotspur cannot compete with their Premier League rivals offering huge wages in the transfer market despite securing a Champions League berth for the upcoming season, manager Mauricio Pochettino has said.

phasis on that. Former players should have financial security in the form of pensions. We have to boost the opportunities to play, organise more tournaments, more leagues.”

Mahfuza said football had the ability to empower women and called on administrators to start building awareness of how the game can have a positive impact on girls’ lives.

“We have lot of religious and social barriers in a lot of conservative countries. It’s a very difficult fight,” she said in an interview from Dhaka. “The most important thing we need to do is hold more workshops and seminars and build awareness.

“We must make the parents understand that they must come out of it. If a girl plays football, she can be secured in every way in her life. A footballer will be more confident physically and mentally.”

With local laws prohibiting women from playing the game in some Arab countries, the administrators must work with the governments, according to Mahfuza, who has previously served on the organising committees for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada in 2015 and the last two Under-20 Women’s World Cups.

“For days I did counselling with the schools’ game teachers, I had to do counselling sessions with parents and then I managed to get children to participate,” said Mahfuza, who was general secretary of the women’s sports council in Bangladesh before joining the football federation in 2008.

“If we look at South Asia, girls are married off at a very young age. And once they are married, they can’t play football as they might face a lot of problems in their families,” she added. While her win over Dodd raised quite a few eyebrows, Mahfuza said her hands-on experience had been the key to her victory.

“She (Dodd) is a former footballer and I have a good opinion about her,” Mahfuza said. “I told the members in my presentations that Moya Dodd has not worked from the level I aspire to do. “Her work was restricted to workshops and seminars. She has not worked at the grassroots level for football development.

“My work will start from there and I am confident I can work closely with people. I also promised to help them get sponsors for women and help them improve financially.” (rtr)

INDIANA - Fernando Alonso said on Wednesday he is not yet comfortable with oval racing as the Spanish driver races to cram years of learning into a few weeks of preparation for this year’s Indianapolis 500.

Alonso, a two-times Formula One world champion who only settled into the cockpit of an IndyCar for the first time two weeks ago, said he has plenty of work to do before being ready for the May 28 race.

“Happy where I am now ... but definitely not comfortable,” Alonso told reporters ahead of Wednesday’s practice at the sprawling 2.5 mile (4.02 km) oval speedway.

Alonso, 35, had his first test session in an IndyCar two weeks ago and on Monday during his first official practice set the pace in the rookie orientation session with a speed of 221.634 miles per hour.

He then got a taste of what competing in “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” is like on Tuesday as nearly all 33 cars were on the track at once for what is known as ‘Happy Hour.’

Speeding around the track in traffic gave Alonso a closer glimpse into oval racing and he said he was starting to get used to what he described as a strange feeling given the different technique needed to drive an IndyCar. “Obviously if you develop your whole career in the Formula One in Europe, you come here, in the oval racing, the car felt not natural to drive because, you know, the car turns left by itself,” said Alonso.

“That’s a little bit strange when you approach turn one in the first lap.

“But I had a good preparation in the simulator, a lot of information from the team in the last couple of weeks. So I think I arrive a little bit prepared for the feeling that I was supposed to have.”

Alonso flew directly to Indianapolis from Barcelona after a 12th place finish at his home Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday ahead of what has been a whirlwind few days.

“The learning laps yesterday in traffic were very useful. I’m on the simulator in the mornings, on the car here in the afternoons. So plenty of time, plenty of running,” said Alonso.

“Not ready yet, but I think I will (be) for qualifying in the race.” (rtr)

‘Bobby Three Sticks’ Mueller to probe RussiaTrump imbroglio

WASHINGTON - Former FBI director and prosecutor Robert Mueller, known for his independence in high-profile government investigations, is taking on a new challenge in the midst of a crisis that threatens the presidency of the United States.

Mueller, 72, was named on Wednesday by the Justice Department to probe alleged Russian efforts to sway November’s presidential election in favor of Donald Trump and to investigate whether there was any collusion between Trump’s campaign team and Moscow.

President Trump said in a statement there was no collusion between his campaign and “any foreign entity.”

Mueller was named to the post by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. His investigation will run in parallel to those being carried out by the FBI and the U.S. Congress.

It would be difficult to fire Mueller, and past special counsel appointments have shown that the job comes with independence and autonomy.

Chicago federal prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald was appointed during the George W. Bush administration in 2003 to a similar role to investigate the leak of the identity of Valerie Plame, an undercover CIA officer whose husband had criticized Bush administration policies.

Fitzgerald indicted I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, a top aide to Vice President Dick Cheney. Bush granted Libby clemency from a prison sentence before he left office.

Robert Luskin, a Washington lawyer who defended Bush political adviser Karl Rove during Fitzgerald’s investigation, praised the choice of Mueller.

“I think it’s good across the board,” Luskin told Reuters. He described Mueller as “credible” and “independent” and said his appointment would be “good for the Department of Justice.”

Mueller, known for avoiding political controversy, took a stand in 2004 when he and then-deputy attorney general James Comey threatened to resign when the Bush White House sought to reauthorize a domestic wiretapping program that the Justice Department had deemed unconstitutional.

In his new role as special counsel, Mueller will have wide latitude to take the investigation wherever he thinks it should go and can use the full range of Justice Department investigative tools, said Jack Sharman, an attorney who served as special counsel during a probe into the Whitewater real-estate investments of President Bill Clinton in 1995. Putin offers transcript to prove Trump did not pass Russia secrets

SOCHI - Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that U.S. President Donald Trump had not divulged any secrets during a meeting in Washington with Russian officials and offered to prove it by supplying Congress with a transcript.

But a leading U.S. Republican politician said he would have little faith in any notes Putin might supply.

Two U.S. officials said on Monday Trump had disclosed classified information about a planned Islamic State operation to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov when they met last week, plunging the White House into a fresh controversy just four months into Trump’s tenure.

Trump, whose administration has been dogged by allegations that Russia helped him win the White House and that he and his allies are too cosy with Moscow, has defended his decision to discuss intelligence with the Russians after media reports of the meeting alarmed some U.S. and foreign politicians.

BUSINESS Wal-Mart’s online sales surge, tops 1Q expectations

BENTONVILLE — Wal-Mart delivered first-quarter earnings that show how it’s winning over shoppers at stores and online, even in an increasingly competitive retail landscape.

The world’s largest retailer beat Wall Street estimates and delivered another solid gain in comparablestore sales. Customer traffic at WalMart also rose while other major retailers like Macy’s and Target suffered declines.

And online sales surged 63 percent, more than doubling the previous quarter’s digital sales.

The majority of the online sales growth was organic through Walmart.com.

Wal-Mart, like other traditional retailers, has played catch-up to Amazon.com and other online companies. It has retooled how it operates online and accelerated that shift by buying already successful online operators.

Wal-Mart spent more than $3 billion for Jet.com in its bid to lure younger and more affluent customers. Then it bought ShoeBuy.com for $70 million and the outdoor and gear seller Moosejaw for $51 million. In March, it bought the trendy clothing seller ModCloth.

ECB could start considering stimulus exit at next meeting

FRANKFURT — Officials at the European Central Bank have indicated that their next meeting would be a good time to consider shifting toward an exit from the stimulus efforts that have boosted the economy.

A written account of the April 27 meeting showed members of the bank’s ratesetting council expect that if the economic recovery keeps going, they would have to consider “adjusting the present formulation” of their stance.

The ECB rate-setters will have new forecasts for inflation and growth at that

meeting, which would put the council “in a better position to take stock.”

The ECB has said it plans to keep pumping 60 billion euros ($67 billion) in newly printed money into the economy through bond purchases at least through the end of the year. Markets are awaiting more clarity about when that program will end.

Phasing out the bond purchases would have wide-ranging effects on markets, investors and governments. The purchases have been holding down longer-term interest rates and flooding the banking system with cash in hopes of promoting lending to

businesses so they can expand and hire.

Tapering the purchases would mean higher interest costs for long-term borrowers such as governments and people who buy homes through mortgages. It would also increase returns to savers with conservative holdings and make it easier to fund pension savings plans. Ending the purchases would also be a prelude to the bank raising its main short-term interest rate benchmark, currently at a record low of zero.

The Frankfurt-based ECB is responsible for setting monetary policy for the 19 countries that use the euro currency. The

primary goal of its stimulus policies has been raising inflation sustainably toward the bank’s goal of just under 2 percent.

Current annual inflation of 1.9 percent in April is in line with that on paper. But the written account indicated that officials feel underlying inflationary pressures remain weak and that the recent upturn in inflation is not yet “durable and self-sustaining.”

To Maintain Peace, Residents Preserve Tradition of Burning “Memedi”

Bungaya customary village, Bebandem, Karangasem, is one of the old villages in Bali. Every customary and religious ritual at the village takes place uniquely. One of them can be seen in the implementation of usaba mumu or familiarly known as usaba memedi. It’s named as usaba memedi because the ritual is marked with the ‘burning’ of memedi (spirits). The procession is carried out amid the pounding sounds of kulkul (wooden split drum) throughout customary hamlet and clan temples at night. How does the implementation look like?

Usaba mumu is held once a year falling in January (Balinese seventh month). This year, peak of the implementation took place on Wednesday (Jan. 18). Fifteen days in advance, residents have looked for ritual paraphernalia ingredients such as young coconut leaf, fruit, palm leaf and others at local customary village.

Then, three days before the peak of procession, all the people create the figure of memedi made from various leaves, such as the leaf of aba, bamboo, eggplant and pulet.

The leaves are arranged in such a way to form humanoid figure coming with tribal marking by using lime betel.

“This paraphernalia is ritualized first in the morning at respective family temple. At night, it is taken out for the ritual procession,” said the apparatus of Bungaya customary village, I Gede Adi Krisna Widana, just before the peak of the ritual began.

At the peak of usaba mumu, thousands of families at Bungaya village have been busy with ritual preparations from the morning.

Krisna said that before sunrise, the whole customary village apparatus come out to village temple or Bale Agung temple to prepare all means of rituals such as pras daksina, bayuan and kelanan.

(guard) made from palm tree stem from the morning. It is made to resemble a human figure decorated with various means such as coconut leaf arrangement and wild cherry fruit. The penyagaan means that people must be able to control their passions as preparation to pay homage.

The guard figure is placed in front of their respective alley. It will be dismantled at midday, after going through particular ritual. “According to local belief, all the guard figures can later be mounted again in paddy fields or anywhere in order to avoid any catastrophe,” said Krisna.

In the afternoon, the whole community, especially women, will say prayers at Pemuhunan Temple. This temple is quite unique

located under a sacred banyan tree without any shrines. Prior to the prayers, thousands of women are sitting around a banyan tree along with their offerings before the worship around 22:00 On the other hand, men are preparing the memedi figure that will be burned at the location of guard figure in the morning. After completing the ritual at the Pemuhunan Temple, then memedi figure is burned simultaneously marked with the sounds of kulkul at 15 customary hamlets and clan temples that keep pounding until the procession is over.

Burning the memedi figure has the meaning of burning all the natures of anger and negative traits in human beings, so that people can live harmonious and peaceful life.

The ashes are ritualized again after formed into human figure at the location of burning. When everything is over, the offerings prepared are immediately offered at the ashmade figure. “After the procession, it usually rains at the night symbolizing if the ritual has run smoothly,” said Krisna.

Three days after this procession, the entire local residents say prayers at the village temple. This process is called ngelisin where all pilgrims invoke holy water. After making introspection for three days, all the local people go through life with a new atmosphere.

Basically, this procession symbolizes the journey of self-control and restores the butha kala to maintain the balance of macrocosm and microcosm. (kmb)

The Selfie Twin Hills offers a magnificent view of Mount Agung and neighbouring areas. “Since the hill has been worked on by out Pokdarwis, a number of local and foregin visitors have come to enjoy the view”, siad Muja.

The government of Bangli, through the Culture and Tourism Agency, has provided guidance to the Pokdarwis regarding human resources, strengthening of the group and the ‘seven charms’ of tourism. “The Geopark Museum also informed them that the rocks that make up, selfie hills were formed 29,000 years ago” he added. Fight against fake news, Bali police launch Salak Bali application DENPASAR - Bali police launched police service application system (Salak) Bali on Wednesday (May 17). One of the goals of this program is to combat fake news and improve services to the community.

Bali Police Chief, Dr. Petrus Reinhard Golose, said that Salak Bali is one of the creative breakthroughs carried out by Division Head of Technology and Information. Besides, it is included in the promoter program of the national police chief.

“Salak Bali application is a very easy system of reports or complaint reception process. This program has also been applied by Denpasar and Klungkung police. I have asked all the district police to apply this application. The application belonging to district police should not be activated, just activate this one,” he said.

With this application, provincial police or district police can spread the official news to the public. In addition, it can also identify whether the news circulating through social media is fake or correct. However, it will be confirmed first to Jakarta.

AMLAPURA - Head of the Singaraja Immigration Office, Viktor Manurung, just came down to Karangasem on Tuesday (May 16). He came down to follow up the report regarding the presence of foreigner suspected of violating residence permit that is misused to work at a hotel at Buitan, Manggis since eight months ago. The immigration office then conducted a coordination meeting to establish the foreigner oversight team (Tim Pora) in the Karangasem area.

To oversee foreign workers in Karangasem region, his office claimed to have held coordination meeting with related institutions such as the national and political unity agency (Kesbangpolinmas), manpower and transmigration office, Karangasem police, 1623/ Karangasem military district and other related institutions at Karangasem regent’s office. It also included the representatives of hoteliers in Karangasem. People’s welfare section of the government of Karangasem at that time reported to the Singaraja immigration office related to the presence of foreigner suspected of violating the residence

permit used to work at one of the hotels at Buitan Beach, Manggis.

Currently, the suspected foreigner is still under supervision of the government and police authority.

From the information or reports submitted by the people’s welfare section, the foreigner is mentioned to have rented a house and worked at a hotel at Buitan since eight months ago.

Currently, his activities are supervised by the government of Karangasem and police authority. Inspection at exit gates of Gilimanuk tightened NEGARA - A number of fugitives escaping from the area of Denpasar on Tuesday (May 16) also get the attention from the ranks of Jembrana police. In accordance with the instructions of the Chief of Jembrana Police, Djoni Widodo, a number of exit points and borders at Gilimanuk Harbor are tightened up.

While tensions between the competing interests of indigenous landholders, pastoral leaseholders and miners on government-controlled land are common, Forrest’s approach represents one of the first known examples of a non-Aboriginal successfully using rights afforded to indigenous people to their own advantage.

Native title is a legal doctrine in Australia that recognises indigenous rights to certain parcels of land.

Forrest’s use of it is not illegal, but it adds to the fractious relationship he has with some indigenous groups. Different groups have raised concerns over Forrest’s cattle interests and have battled over land rights with the company he founded and chairs - Fortescue Metals Group, the world’s fourth biggest iron ore miner.

A spokeswoman for Forrest said the issue was about complying with mining regulations.

“It is neither a matter of using

native title law nor objecting to prospecting,” said the spokeswoman.

She said there was support for Forrest’s position within the Thalanyji people who hold native title under some of his cattle stations.

The farms operated with the utmost respect for the environment, she added.

But Matthew Slack, the head of the Buurabalayji Thalanyji Aboriginal Corp which oversees native title for the indigenous landowners, said it was “pretty rich” for Forrest to use rights designed to protect indigenous interests.

Heart-shaped diamond sells for $13M, under auction estimate

GENEVA — A heart-shaped diamond billed as the largest of its kind to be auctioned off sold for less than the pre-sale estimate Wednesday, fetching a hammer price of 13 million Swiss francs (about $13.3 million.)

The 92-carat “La Legende” was the standout piece among some 250 jewels put on the block during the day at Christie’s in Geneva. It had been expected to go for $14 million to $20 million.

The diamond dangles from a pearl necklace in a piece designed by Paris’ centuries-old Boehmer & Bassenge jewelers.

Christie’s said that including the buyer’s premium, the Legende sold for $15 million — a new high for a heart-shaped diamond sold at auction. The previous record had been set six years ago at Christie’s, with a 56-carat stone that sold for $10.9 million.

Francois Curiel, the Asia-Pacific chairman for Christie’s, said the sale overall reaped $93 million.

He declined to identify the buyer of the standout stone. But he said those who made purchases in the auction came from all around.

“There were quite a few Chinese buyers, but maybe a little bit less then we’ve had normally,” he said. “America and Europe dominated.”

The sale capped two days of high-profile jewelry auctions in Geneva.

A 14.54-carat flawless Fancy Vivid Blue diamond earring that was the headline offering Tuesday at rival Sotheby’s also fell short of its pre-sale estimate.

It was paired with a pear-shaped pink diamond earring.

Rector Sugiartha added that he does not feel that the leaders of Bali have been doing their best to balance the physical and spiritual aspects of the island. Although there have been some efforts made, they have not been implemented according to the aims and expectations of the Balinese people in general.

“The upstream of Bali’s development lies in culture, therefor the building up of culture through the arts and the spirituality of the Balinese people should be considered first. Supporting culture and spirituality in a way that is suitable to the values of the Balinese people should be made a priority” he said.

With the right attitude, he added, skills and knowledge can be used for the good. Also if the leaders find a balance between logic, ethics and aesthetics, in structuring community life, Bali will undoubtedly last forever.

“If we only develop logic, but forget to build on ethics and aesthetics, I do think we will be balanced.

We will be unable to work towards the aspirations of those who came before us. There are not many great discoveries built on logic alone, great things are found using a basis of the good aesthetic value of art and culture in maintaining the balance of life between the macrocosm and microcosm. Whoever will lead Bali in the future, must create balance” he concluded. (win)

Rampant coastal conversion threats existence of fishermen

MANGUPURA - Currently, many coastal areas commonly used as a venue of activity by fishermen group have been converted into a restaurant or hotel property. Definitely, this condition will become a ‘threat’ for the presence of fishermen that usually had some activities there.

Head of the Badung Fishery Agency, I Putu Oka Swadiana, said on Wednesday (May 16) that he did not deny the phenomenon. Admittedly, many coastal areas are even taken advantage by other parties and not by fishermen. To that end, the measure of forming a regional bylaw on fishermen is considered very positive to secure coastal areas. Without such protection, the existing coast is feared to gradually run out. Therefore, the regional bylaw on fishermen which is now in the hands of the House of Representatives is expected to slow down the conversion.

“We have submitted the regional bylaw draft and it is now still under discussion at the parliament,” he said. Therefore, the implementation of Badung Marine Festival (BBF) started on Friday (May 19) is also expected to empower the existence of coastal com-

munity. Since it stays relatively new, the event to be followed by a number of foreign participants remains in the stage of introduction. “Since this is for the first time, we do not have the right icon and it’s still in the introduction stage,” he said.

As it is newly held, in the future the committee will involve more fisherman groups including traditional activities. Involving the fishermen group, in this case, for example, is by holding a competition to make nets or doing traditional fishing activities in general. Coffee factory at Mengani lacks of raw materials

Production under 1,000 tons, while processing capacity 3,000 tons

BANGLI - Arabica coffee processing factory at Mengani, Kintamani, all this time managed by the regional-owned enterprise (Perusda BMB) in cooperation with third party, PT Qahwa, cannot produce optimally. The lack of raw material for coffee is the main obstacle to the maximum production of the factory.

Supervisory Board of the Perusda BMB who is also the Head of Economic Affairs, Luh Ketut Wardani, said on Wednesday (May 17) that all this time the raw materials that can be processed in the Arabica coffee factory at Mengani amounts to less than 1,000 tons per year.

Actually, the factory has now added with a processing machine with large capacity of up to 3,000 tons. The lack of coffee raw materials from farmers is recognized as the main obstacle to achieve maximum coffee production in the factory.

Luh Wardani said the difficulty to get raw materials happens because the coffee production of farmers in Kintamani has decreased since the past few years.

Besides, the difficulty to get raw materials also occurs because quite a lot of coffee farmers in Kintamani tend to sell their crops to small coffee processing factories at some villages.

“Actually, the coffee processing factory at Mengani dares to buy farmers’ crops at an expensive price of IDR 9,000 per kilogram. However, farmers prefer to sell their crops to small

factories because they feel uncomfortable with the collectors having become their partner for long time,” he explained.

In order to get the coffee raw materials to be processed at Mengani coffee factory, Perusda BMB along with PT Qahwa has been trying to proactively buy coffee to farmers’ plantation in Kintamani. Moreover, such an effort is also carried out to the neighboring district equally producing coffee such as Badung.

Yet, Wardani admitted such an effort has not produced maximum results.

“Many investments have been made by PT Qahwa to increase productivity all this time by repairing the equipment and machinery in the factory including hiring many new employees. Unfortunately, we are constrained by the supply of raw materials,” he said.

Under these conditions, according to Wardani, the only effort made by the district government to make the coffee processing plant at Mengani continuously produce is by optimizing the coffee production of farmers. Through the agriculture, fishery and maritime affairs, the efforts attempted are to improve the pattern of cultivation and giving counseling so that farmers are no longer to cut down their coffee crops to be replaced with tangerine, including inviting farmers to sell their crops to the factory at Mengani. Dolphins throng waters of Klungkung Fishermen choose to stop activities

SEMARAPURA - The presence of dolphins around the waters of Klungkung has a negative impact on the fish catch of fishermen. Apart from consuming their fish catch, the dolphins often attack their fishing nets that have caught fish. So, this condition also becomes a consideration for fishermen to stop fishing for a while.

A fisherman of Kusamba Beach, Wayan Karinu, admitted to switch

profession into freight porter. It happens because the fish catch of fishermen declined drastically recently. Moreover, there are fishermen returning home without a single fish. “This has happened since two years ago. Every year the number of dolphins continues to increase so that our catch continues to decline,” said Wayan Karinu when chatting on Kusamba Beach, on Wednesday (May 17).

Every time going to sea, fishermen have to spend fuel cost at IDR 200,000. “Our fishing nets are often damaged by dolphins if we get fish. The fish we have caught were savored and some others escaped.

So, we decided not to go to sea,” he said.

When not going to sea, he admitted to spend his time by chatting with fellow fishermen on the beach while repairing fishing

gears. However, there are also fishermen choosing to be freight or boat porter. The income of freight porters on Kusamba Beach is quite tempting. A porter can earn an income of IDR 100,000 for half a day only. “The work as freight porter on Kusamba Beach is quite heavy. If the waves are large, it will be more difficult to transport goods to boat,” he explained.

The day-off taken by many fishermen has an impact on the circulation of fish in the market.

According to him, more fish sold in Klungkung are currently brought in from Karangasem and Java. The fish imported from Karangasem is fresh while those brought in from Java is frozen.

“Fish boiling houses mostly use frozen fish from Java,” he said. (dwa)

Indonesian-born Australians Tasia and Gracia Seger, known as the Spice Sisters and winners of the 2016 Australian cooking show My Kitchen Rules (MKR), shared their skills and samples of their winning recipes with Bali Tourism Institute students and staff during a cooking demo at Nusa Dua, Bali.

Tasia and Gracia made “Seared scallops on Betel leaves with coriander dressing”. “The dish is influenced by Thai and Vietnamese cuisine with the use of fish sauce.

The Betel leaves or “daunsirih” is not an ingredient that is frequently used in Indonesian cuisine, it is more a stimulant used by many to chew on as they would tobacco.

However in this dish, we have used Betel leaves to increase the flavour of our dish, bringing robustness and complexity in a single bite”, Tasia and Gracia explained.

Forbes: Jay Z and Beyonce worth a combined $1.16 billion

NEW YORK — Jay Z and Beyonce are a billiondollar couple according to one estimate.

Forbes puts the combined wealth of the married superstars at $1.16 billion. The magazine estimates Jay Z’s fortune at $810 million. It says Beyonce has amassed $350 million.

Forbes says most of Jay Z’s money is involved in Roc Nation and his other companies. Both the rapper and the singer also have a significant stake in the Tidal streaming music service.

Jay Z signed a 10-year pact with Live Nation to partner on concert events worth $200 million.

The couple has a 5-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy. Beyonce is pregnant with twins. (rtr)

LOS ANGELES - Late night host Jimmy Kimmel will return to helm the 2018 Academy Awards, organizers of the event said Tuesday, after the late night host artfully handled the biggest blunder in Oscars history this year.

Kimmel hosted the Oscars for the first time this year in which an embarrassing on-stage mix-up led to presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway mistakenly being given the wrong envelope and announcing “La La Land” as the winner of best picture, the top award of the night.

The actual winner, announced minutes later, was “Moonlight.”

mel Live!” on ABC, the same network that airs the Oscars ceremony every year, said in a statement on Tuesday that hosting the Oscars “was a highlight of my career.”

“If you think we screwed up the ending this year, wait until you see what we have planned for the 90th anniversary show!” Kimmel added.

Michael De Luca and Jennifer Todd will also return to produce the live show. The Oscars will be held on March 4 at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre.

The Oscars, organized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, is Hollywood’s most

prestigious film awards ceremony.

Amid the on-stage chaos during the best picture announcement watched live by millions of viewers this year, Kimmel quickly ran on stage and injected a dose of humor by quipping to Beatty, “Warren, what did you do?”

He added, “The good news is that we got to see some extra speeches. I knew I would screw this show up.”
