It’s not me: S. Korean female stars rush to deny K-pop sex videos SEOUL - Female K-pop stars and actors have rushed to issue denials that they appear in sex videos secretly shot by male singers, illustrating women’s fears about victim-blaming and stigma in the face of South Korea’s enduring conservative social values. In three days no fewer than five male K-pop singers, including mega star Seungri, have been identified as recipients of illicit videos made by singer-songwriter Jung Joon-young of sexual acts with women, taken without their consent. Three are being investigated by police, while four have announced their retirements or quit their bands. There has been widespread online speculation on the victims’ identities. At least four women have issued separate statements denying they appear in the videos, with actor Oh Cho-hee saying on her Instagram account that the rumours were “really not true”. “I can’t tell you how many calls I’ve received since this morning,” she added. Most of their agents -- including two of the biggest managers in Kpop, SM Entertainment and JYP Entertainment -- said they would take legal action against further online rumours that “significantly ruin their reputation and image”. Scholars and activists say the fact that being identified as a victim of sexrelated offences is seen as a threat to a woman’s status shows the enduring presence of traditional values and the tendency to blame victims in the South. “In an ideal world, women wouldn’t worry about getting their reputation ruined for matters like these,” said women’s rights activist Kang Min-jin. “And for the K-pop agencies, they are worried about getting their reputation ruined because

Baby reunited with dad as Indonesia flood death toll hits 79
they think about female singers as their products. They are worried that their products will no longer be marketable.” (afp)
A baby trapped under rubble after flash flooding destroyed his home in Indonesia has been reunited with his father after the disaster killed the rest of their family, officials said Monday, as the death toll hit 79. The five-month old was plucked Sunday from debris inside a house where his mother and siblings were found dead in the hard-hit town of Sentani. The tot has since been returned to his surviving father. “We took the baby to the hospital and had him treated,” Papua military spokesman Muhammad Aidi told AFP. “He was in stable condition and has been released. The father was distressed but happy to be reunited with his baby.” The news came as Indonesia’s disaster agency raised the official death toll from 58 on Sunday, with more than three dozen people still missing. Indonesia’s military took up the grim task of putting the corpses of mud-caked victims into body bags, after flash floods and landslides ripped through the area. Scores have been injured in the disaster, triggered by torrential rain on Saturday. “The death toll could still go up,” said national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. Rescuers battled mud, rocks and fallen trees in the hunt for survivors, as medical personnel treated the wounded in makeshift tents. “People need food, blankets, clean clothes and clean water,” Nugroho said.

Singer iLe
NEW YORK - A rising Puerto Rican star who struck a chord with a song lambasting US oppression of her homeland is back with a provocative track tackling rape culture and society’s machismo. The singer iLe (pronounced EEELay) -- whose career kicked off as a singer for her brothers’ renowned reggaeton rap band Calle 13 -- imbues the traditional Latin bolero style that’s often reserved for romance yet with dark, poignant lyrics, calling attention to sensitive issues she says society prefers to ignore. Speaking in New York ahead of her performance at the festival “Migrations: The Making of America” -- put on by the acclaimed Carnegie Hall -- the edgy balladeer said news of the sexual assault and murder of a Puerto Rican woman inspired her to pen the vulnerable “Temes,” which unravels the emotional after-

math of a rape. It’s “a song trying to portray so many things that we go through as women that are very unfortunate,” iLe, real name Ileana Cabra, told AFP of the song, whose title translates in English to “You’re Afraid.” “It’s a struggle that I can’t believe that we’re still going through -- but it’s important to talk about,” she said. “My best way of speaking about it is through music.” The 29-year-old singer who began performing with her superstar brothers as a teenager has since stepped into her own, winning a
Grammy for her debut solo album “Ilevitable” that saw her riff on Latin standards. Now she’s repurposing her oldschool sultry voice to take on contemporary affairs, first with 2018’s “Odio” (“Hate”), which unpacks the colonial relationship between the US and Puerto Rico, and now with the striking “Temes.” The disturbing-yet-dreamlike video for the song opens with the shoes of a man leaving a room as a woman, played by iLe, slowly composes herself, pulling up her underwear and removing ropes from her neck and wrists to reveal raw wounds. - State of emergency In Doyo, one of the most affected areas, a housing complex was littered with huge rocks believed to have rolled down from a nearby mountain, while sediment and waste were piled up on the pavement. The military said 5,700 people have been evacuated from the hard-hit area. “We have over 1,000 personnel searching for more victims,” Aidi said. Disaster-prone Indonesia has issued a 14-day state of emergency in response to the floods. Papua shares a border with independent Papua New Guinea on an island just north of Australia. Flooding is common in Indonesia, especially during the rainy season which runs from October to April. In January, floods and landslides killed at least 70 people on Sulawesi island, while earlier this month hundreds in West Java province were forced to evacuate when torrential rains triggered severe flooding.
