Jussie Smollett assault inquiry has shifted, say Chicago police

CHICAGO - Police want to reinterview Jussie Smollett after saying “the trajectory of the investigation” into the reported attack on the Empire actor had shifted.

The move comes after Chicago investigators released without charge two Nigerian brothers they had detained for questioning earlier in the week.

In response, lawyers for Smollett said the star would continue to cooperate with police, but felt “victimised” by reports he might have been involved in the attack.

“Nothing is further from the truth and anyone claiming otherwise is lying,” a statement issued by law firm Todd Pugh and Victor P Henderson said.

Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said: “We can confirm that the information received from the individuals questioned by police earlier in the Empire case has in fact shifted the trajectory of the investigation.

“We’ve reached out to the Em-

pire cast member’s attorney to request a follow-up interview.”

Smollett has said he was attacked by two masked men shouting racial and anti-gay slurs and “This is MAGA (Make America Great Again) country!”.

He said they looped a rope around his neck before running away as he was out getting food at a Subway restaurant early on 29 January. He said they also poured an unknown chemical substance on him. On Wednesday, Chicago police picked up two brothers at O’Hare International Airport as they returned from Nigeria.

They described them as “suspects” in the assault, questioned them and searched their apartment.

However, late on Friday police said they were no longer suspects.

One of the men is Smollett’s personal trainer who he hired to get him physically ready for a music video, the statement from the actor’s lawyers said. (net)

“I’ve been to Madame Tussauds a few times when I was younger and I took my family when they’ve come down from Kosovo and Holland and it’s always been a really

fun experience.”

She added in a Tweet that she had been “missing” her London fans.

Madame Tussauds general manager Steve Davies said: “We had a lot of fun setting up this special moment with Dua for her fans.

“2019 already looks set to be another groundbreaking year for her and it’s about time we celebrated our fellow Londoner.”

Scrap iron entrepreneurs must have a permit

SINGARAJA - In line with the enforcement of Regional Regulations (Perda) on solid waste, the Buleleng Environment Agency (DLH) began to follow up with regulations below. As evidence, the DLH is drawing up a draft of the Regent Regulation for waste handling and waste management business permit. With this regulation, the regional government wants to crack down on the existence of scrap iron collecting business. Not only cracking down, this regulation is to govern the existence of this business that so far seems still chaotic and disturbs the aesthetics of a region, especially in the town of Singaraja.

Head of the DLH Buleleng, Putu Ariadi Pribadi, last week said that at this time his agency is discussing two waste-related regent regulations, namely the draft on the handling of waste and another about waste management business licenses. In this setup, the DLH

focuses on discussing about waste management business licenses.

This regulation is important because so far businessmen getting engaged in garbage and collecting scrap metal are less controlled.

He gave an example that some of the entrepreneurs often use sidewalks

Cousins’ computer simulation, still a proof-of-concept version, focuses on how the warm weather surge in house flies and their activity affects the typical spring-summer rise in Campylobacter cases. Under a scenario of summers 2.5 degrees Celsius warmer on average than in

2003, the simulation predicts about 28 percent more Campylobacter cases in the Canadian province of Ontario by 2050, she and colleagues say February 13 in Royal Society Open Science.

Campylobacter infections are most often caused by contaminated food,

perhaps by a fly that’s strolled on other tainted food, an infected animal or feces. Most people recover from an infection within about 10 days. The bacteria are the most common cause of gastrointestinal illness in Canada, with Ontario averaging more than 3,000 cases a year. The United States

has some 1.3 million infections a year.

To set up a simplified simulation, Cousins used data from 2005 on reported Campylobacter infections in Ontario to estimate transmission rates and fly birth and death rates. She then plugged those rates into the simulation to predict subsequent years’ Campylobacter infections. Those results came close to the real data available through 2013, and allowed her to predict future infections under different warming scenarios. The simulation assumes

flies become more active with climate change since, like other insects, they depend on ambient temperatures for heating and cooling. It also assumes bacterial increases with warming.

The study is just the latest to highlight consequences of warming on insect behavior. Other studies have predicted how climate change might increase pest attacks on crops and affect public health, such as Lyme disease’s creep into Canada. (net)

CALIFORNIA - A new, nearly weightless insulation material can withstand extreme heat that would destroy other materials.

The porous aerogel is at least 99 percent open space, with the rest made up of an atomically thin ceramic called hexagonal boron nitride. The design proves extremely durable under high temperatures and rapid temperature shifts of over 1,000 degrees Celsius, researchers report in the Feb. 15 Science.

“It’s notoriously hard to make materials that are not just lightweight, but can also be heavily heat resistant,” says Deep Jariwala, an engineer at the University of Pennsylvania who coauthored a commentary on the study in the same issue of Science. The new ultralight insulator may be especially

well suited to shielding components on spacecraft, which must endure extreme temperature swings when turning toward or away from the sun or re-entering Earth’s atmosphere, he says. The aerogel comprises a network of tiny air pockets, with each pocket separated by two atomically thin layers of hexagonal boron nitride. Much like how double-pane windows prevent heat from escaping a house in winter, the double-pane ceramic barrier makes it difficult for heat to transfer from one air bubble to another. It’s also difficult for heat to spread through the material by traveling along the hexagonal boron nitride layers themselves, because that would require following long, circuitous routes, explains study coauthor Xiangfeng Duan, a chemist and

materials scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Whereas other ceramic aerogels are liable to break down under sudden temperature shifts or extended heat exposure, the new aerogel withstood 500 cycles of rapid heating and cooling from –198° C to 900° C, as well as sitting at a scalding 1400° C for one week. A piece of the insulator also successfully shielded a flower held over a roughly 500° C flame.

Because the material’s structure is so sparse, it’s probably not usable on its own, says Julia Greer, a materials scientist at Caltech not involved in the work. The aerogel is resilient in the sense that it’s soft and squishable.

But to protect the aerogel from tears, it would likely have to be packaged inside a sturdier material, she says. (net)

One of the photographers having intensively made experiment with this 360o camera is Ketut Kurniawan. This graduate from the Photography Department, Faculty of Arts and Design at the Indonesia Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar ‘explored’ the charming beauty of the Badung landscape through a 360o camera as his final assignment. He said the shape of a 360o camera resembles to a round earth showing off all the contents in it clearly. This camera can also capture images having many points of interest such as natural scenery, room atmosphere, market crowds, and the like.

“I am very much challenged to explore the natural beauty of Badung through a 360o camera in the perspective of the photographic art. I find something very unique and dramatic there,” said the man from Sading village, Badung.

According to the name it carries, said Kurniawan, the camera has the ability to take photos or record videos up to a 360o angle. In other words, we cannot only see camera footage or photos from just one corner, but also around them. Nevertheless, the role of humans is still the main thing in order to be able to produce a work that does not only review documentation using ideas.

As the technology develops, this modified 360o camera is modified to be simpler where

one of them is in terms of design. The camera Gear 360o in 2017, for example, has a round design like an eyeball with two lenses placed on the front and rear respectively. There is an addition of a kind of grip in the new version. This design will make users easier to hold or use the device. In previous version, the design was only round, without a grip and only equipped with accessories such as a tripod to facilitate grip.

Meanwhile, the Gear 360o camera is equipped with two cameras with a resolution of 15MP each. “There are two ways to take photos using this 360o camera namely by taking via cellular devices and retrieving directly from a 360o camera,” explained Kurniawan.

Difficulty of finding bamboo in Jegog region JEGOG is one of West Bali’s special arts that lately experienced a dilemma. It does nothing to do with less attention to preservation and coaching given to this art. The government and various parties have paid attention to this bamboo musical instrument. A number of festival and other events always even involved Jegog. However, currently the intention is worth giving to the availability of raw materials for this bamboo musical instrument.

Jegog gamelan makers have been in trouble to find bamboo material from the Jembrana region itself for several years, mainly petung bamboo having the largest diameter size. It is increasingly rare and even difficult to find bamboo in the origin of Jegog musical instruments. The artisans are forced to search outside Jembrana like Tabanan and Karangasem, even outside Bali. A number of Jegog artists met recently acknowledged that bamboo material used for making the instrument is indeed difficult to obtain though bamboo was once easily found on the outskirts of the forest in Jembrana.

“Now, there is almost nothing (petung bamboo) and must order outside,” said Oka, a Jegog player from Sangkaragung village. When the bamboo gamelan breaks, it will be difficult and the cost is large enough to replace. Moreover, when the performance is carried out for contest with face-to-face groups, the jegog troupe must prepare the gamelan reserve in case the bamboo blade of the gamelan breaks.

“This has become a dilemma for all of us. In the past, there were still many large-size bamboos that grew and were easily searched for

in Jembrana,” said one of the Jegog artists, Gede Oka Artha Negara.

Due to the shortage of bamboo, he and his father at that time had to plant many different types of bamboo on his land. This successor of Grandpa Jegog revealed that to make the Jegog gamelan sustainable, the role of the government and community is highly expected.

It must be sought for why the large sizes of bamboo cannot grow anymore. Moreover, Jembrana was a large forest so that bamboo flourished at that time. Nowadays, we have begun to switch. The area formerly a jungle has now changed into buildings or maybe due to a lot of emerging industries and waste that pollute the environment.

The difficulty of getting bamboo is also acknowledged by Ketut Dernen, an artist who plays Jegog gamelan from Pancardawa, Pendem village. This recipient of Satya Laksana Dharma Kusuma award in 2013 revealed that Jegog gamelan has special features. The bamboo used must also be selected. In addition to being large devices, the tone of jegog usually changes when the weather or climate changes. For example, when it is taken to a cold highland area, the sound will surely change when beaten.

I Ketut Daton, another Jegog musician from Kaliakah village, when met some time ago, also admitted the difficulty to obtain the petung bamboo material. At present, finding large sized bamboo is no longer available in Jembrana.

“Petung bamboo can only be obtained in Tabanan, and the quality is not as strong as the bamboo used to be,” he explained. However, for jajang or santang (smaller) bamboo for suwir, kantil and barangan can still be obtained. (olo)

Yet uncertainty about the trading relationship between Beijing and Washington hangs over this weekend’s Toy Fair, dampening the festive mood amidst giant balloon cartoon figures and karaoke cars as some 30,000 industry representatives survey the latest and greatest in play.

China manufactures around 85 percent of the toys and games sold in the United States and is also home to a growing consumer market estimated to overtake the US play market in 2022. Aaron Muderick, founder of “Crazy Aaron’s Puttyworld,” a Pennsylvania company, has seen profits hit by US tariffs on raw materials to make his colorful putty and on steel cans, which bear the made in the USA mark.

But Muderick is most worried about losing momentum in the booming Chinese market where he has worked to establish distribution channels and build brand identity.

“We’ve invested a lot of time and dollars,” he told AFP. “If it creates a market where the product is not welcome, where there are retaliatory tariffs that make it impossible for me to reach that consumer, then I lose.”

About 40 Chinese booths are displaying with China Toy & Juvenile Products Association, including companies selling stuffed bears, trampolines, magnetic building blocks and flashing beads.

“Some members feel uncertain, but the business is so far going okay,” said the group’s president, May Liang

in an interview.

Company representatives have reported no drop in interest among their US buyers, said May, who expressed skepticism that the US would impose broad tariffs on toys.

“We believe toys are really consumer-focused especially at holiday season, so we think toys should not be on the tariff list because it will harm consumers.

But the US industry is still worried about Trump administration plans to lift tariffs from 10 percent to 25 percent on raw materials. That increase was scheduled to take effect March 1, but Trump on Friday reiterated that he could delay the increase if a deal is close.

Companies have mostly eaten the hit from a 10 percent hike, but a 25 percent tariff would be much more painful. Putty maker Muderick, for example, saw 2018 profits hit by the tariff on steel but suffered no real hit last year from tariffs on rubber silicone because he bought supply ahead in anticipation of the levy. But he expects more of a profit hit in 2019.

Some toymakers may be in longterm contracts with retailers that lock in price.

“If it goes to 25 percent, companies will go out of business, or they will cut back jobs,” said Neil Helfand, an attorney specializing in trade whose clients include toy companies. (afp)

Australia defends lucrative PNG refugee contracts with obscure firm

SYDNEY - Australian officials Monday defended awarding lucrative contracts to an obscure firm with a beach shack as its registered office, saying they were in a hurry to find a company to provide services at Pacific refugee camps.

The Singapore-registered Paladin Holdings was awarded more than Aus$420 million (US$300 million) -- about Aus$17 million a month -- in contracts to provide security at three transition centres for refugees on Papua New Guinea’s Manus Island.

The operations are part of Canberra’s harsh policy of processing asylum-seekers who try to reach Australia by boat at remote offshore Pacific camps, where hundreds of refugees have been stranded for five years. But questions have been raised about why Paladin was given the contracts after local media reported the firm had little experience, was thinly capitalised and had ties to a senior PNG politician.

The Australian Financial Review said Paladin’s registered office in Australia was a beach shack on Kangaroo Island, a sanctuary for native wildlife off the coast of South Australia.

After the reports surfaced last week, Paladin changed its registered address to an office in Canberra, the newspaper said Monday.

Home Affairs officials grilled about the issue at parliamentary hearings Monday said they resorted to a closed tender -- only approaching one firm to bid -- as PNG suddenly pulled out in mid-2017 from plans to manage the process.

With the Australian-run camp due to close by end-October 2017 after a PNG court ruled it was unconstitutional, the officials said they had to act quickly to find a company to manage three replace-

ment transition centres.

Paladin emerged as the main contender as it served as a subcontractor to previous PNG detention service providers, the officials said.

They added that other firms which previously bid for contracts indicated there was too much “noise” over running Canberra’s asylum offshore detention facilities.

“We were dealing with an urgent situation,” Home Affairs Secretary Mike Pezzullo told the parliamentary committee.

Companies involved in managing the contentious camps, including Spanish construction giant Ferrovial, had been under pressure from human rights campaigners to divest from the projects amid reports of abuse and poor conditions. Ferrovial and other service providers later said they would not tender for future contracts in the wake of the criticism.

Rights activists and refugees have since also complained about conditions in the replacement transition centres.

Attorney-General Christian Porter on Sunday defended the contracts but said reports of links between Paladin and the Manus-based family of a senior PNG politician would “have to be investigated thoroughly”.

Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton, whose portfolio encompasses the offshore detention regime, last week distanced himself from the tender process, saying it was managed by lower-level officials.

According to him, the name of Goa Peteng Alam Tunjung Mekar Temple comes from the word goa meaning ‘cave’ and peteng meaning ‘dark.’ Meanwhile, alam means it was formed through natural processes, and Tunjung Mekar represents a hope like a flower looked for by many people.

There are two caves in the temple, namely the cave facing north with the depth of 250 meters and the one facing south with the depth of 300 meters. The cave facing south has two springs. Both springs are considered to symbolize purusha (male aspect) and pradhana (female aspect). However, the cave facing south is not used for melukat, but only for invoking holy water. Meanwhile, the cave used for melukat or self-purification is only the one facing north.

To get to the water source, pilgrims must go down along dozens of stairs. In both caves, there are many bat populations. Local people believe the bats are the animals guarding the cave. In addition, there is also a python belonging to the divine property of the local temple.

Sequence of performing self-purification in the cave temple starts from doing notification ritual. After that, it is resumed with melukat in the cave located in the north by first presenting canang oblation and expressing wishes and hopes. After that, return to go up and beg for water and blessing rice as completion of the procession.

‘Urgent steps’ needed to save Australia’s biggest river system SYDNEY - The viability of a key river that feeds into Australia’s biggest water system is under threat if poor conditions that killed millions of fish are not improved within six months, scientists warned Monday.

The management of the Murray-Darling River system, which stretches thousands of kilometres across several states and supplies Australia’s food bowl, has been under close scrutiny following three mass fish deaths in December and January.

Authorities said millions of fish died in the Darling River events, blamed on low water flow and oxygen levels in the river as well as possibly toxic algae.

Leading scientists who studied the three bouts of kills said that while a severe drought plaguing inland eastern Australia contributed to the deaths, there were also “serious deficiencies in governance and management” of the river network.

“Our review of the fish kills found there isn’t enough water in the Darling system to avoid catastrophic outcomes,” said Craig Moritz, chair of the independent expert panel commissioned by the opposition Labor Party to investigate the deaths.

He said an analysis of rainfall and river flow data over recent decades points to “excess water extraction upstream” in the agricultural regions of Queensland and New South Wales (NSW) states.

If urgent steps are not taken within six months to increase the flow of water, the expert report said, the “viability of the Darling” as well as the communities that depend on it for their livelihoods would be under threat.

Authorities in 2014 launched a vast Murray–Darling Basin Plan to manage water sharing and usage along the length of the system, which runs through five states and territories.

Last month a Royal Commission launched by South Australia state accused officials of “maladministration”, “negligence” and “unlawful” actions in implementing the plan.

Environmental activists and many residents living along the lower reaches of the Murray-Darling system have put much of the blame on abusive water extraction for irrigation by agribusinesses, including major cotton farms in Queensland and NSW. But officials of Australia’s conservative federal government have focused on the impacts of prolonged drought and an unprecedented heat wave during this southern summer as the primary causes of low water flow in the Darling River.

Federal Environment Minister Melissa Price said Monday that “significant rainfall” was needed to alleviate the poor water quality and that release of more water into the system from upstream dams would not improve the conditions. (afp)

Trump aide predicts ‘hundreds of miles’ of border wall by 2020

WASHINGTON - A top adviser to Donald Trump said Sunday that the president’s emergency declaration could allow “hundreds of miles” of barriers to be built on the Mexican border before the 2020 election.

“You’re looking at hundreds of miles,” Stephen Miller said on “Fox News Sunday,” “probably a couple hundred miles”

by September 2020, two months before the election.

Trump has made clear he plans to exploit the issue in his re-election campaign, even amid sharp criticism from Democrats, rights groups, border-state landowners -- and several prominent Republicans.

The president on Friday invoked a “national emergency” to justify tapping military and other funds for barrier construction, after Congress approved less than a fourth the $5.7 billion he had sought for border security.

Miller, echoing Trump’s arguments, said that an unsecured border allowed drugs and criminals to pour into the country. He dismissed government statistics showing illegal entries had fallen.

“You cannot have uncontrolled, unsecured areas of the border where people can pour in undetected,” he said.

But asked to cite an example

of a past president invoking an emergency after being denied funds by Congress, Miller could not do so. “If people don’t like that, they can address it,” he said.

- An ‘imminent’ challenge Given the near-certainty of legal challenges and of a possible blocking move in Congress, it is far from clear how quickly barrier construction can advance on the 1,950-mile (3,140-kilometer) border.

Xavier Becerra, the attorney general of California, told ABC his state would be filing a lawsuit against the project “definitely, and imminently.”

He said California and other states had legal standing in the case because they risked losing moneys intended for military projects, disaster assistance and other purposes. Several states “will be harmed,” he said.

Another Democrat, Senator Tammy Duckworth of Illinois, said she thought Congress could pass a resolution to block Trump’s action but might not

be able to summon the votes to override a likely Trump veto.

Miller stopped just short of predicting a Trump veto, saying simply, “He will protect his national emergency declaration -- guaranteed.”

Several Republican senators have decried the emergency declaration, saying it establishes a dangerous precedent and amounts to executive overreach.

How they might vote on a resolution is unclear.

But one well-known Republican, former Massachusetts governor William Weld, is even entertaining a 2020 primary challenge to the president.

While his chances would appear slim, he argued Sunday on ABC that Americans cannot afford six more years of a president who “wants to divide the country” and is “reckless” in running up trillion-dollar deficits.

He said the emergency declaration was an example of Trump trying to “make himself seem indispensable,” then added, “He’s not indispensable at all.” (afp)

JAKARTA — Indonesia’s presidential candidates debated some of the most pressing issues facing the world’s third-largest democracy: dilapidated infrastructure, struggling farmers, forest fires — and unicorns.

When President Joko Widodo, who is seeking a second term, asked challenger Prabowo Subianto about his policies for supporting unicorns — tech start-up companies worth at least $1 billion — a look of bafflement passed across the former general’s face.

Wondering aloud, he replied: “What are unicorns? You mean those online things?” Widodo sagely nodded in the affirmative before Subianto explained he supports online businesses.

Subianto was probably not alone in his ignorance, but Widodo sup-

Indonesia’s top football official, who has been in the job less than a month, was questioned by police Monday over a match-fixing scandal that has rocked the Southeast Asian nation’s domestic league.

Joko Driyono became acting president of the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) in late January after former chairman Edy Rahmayadi stepped down in the wake of a cor-

ruption probe that has seen police identify more than a dozen suspects.

Driyono was questioned Monday over allegations he was involved in destroying evidence of match-fixing, national police spokesman Dedi Prasetyo said.

“The main focus of today’s examination concerns the problem of destruction, theft and removal of evidence,” Prasetyo told reporters.

Police raided Driyono’s apartment last week and confiscated laptops, flash drives and dozens of documents, including match and financial records.

He has been slapped with a 20day travel ban but has not yet been arrested. Indonesian football has recently been rocked by a series of match-fixing allegations.

The PSSI and police announced

a crackdown on match-fixing in December after an executive member of the association was caught on tape trying to bribe a coach approximately $10,000 to throw a second-division game.

He resigned and was handed a three-year ban and fine by a PSSI disciplinary committee.

While it has a low international profile, Indonesia has attracted

Williams miss first day of testing in Barcelona PARIS - The Williams Formula One team have blamed delays on preparing their 2019 car for sitting out the first day of pre-season testing in Barcelona on Monday.

order to meet the Balinese culture.

The style of the gates are not the same as its origin when it was built during the power of Majapahit.

The Maospahit temple is the oldest in Denpasar. Its origins date back to the Majapahit period of the 14th Century. It has remained in continuous use since this time, although it was badly damaged and then repaired following an earthquake in 1917.

“We have had an incredibly busy winter at Grove getting the FW42 prepared for the season ahead and, despite everyone’s best efforts, we need some more time before it will be ready to run.”

She said the priority was to bring a car to the track “that is the best that it can be”.

“It’s clearly not ideal, but equally it’s not the end of the world.”

The delay means the British team are up against the clock to get in vital testing miles.

“We still have seven days of testing left and we will be maximising that time to prepare the car for the first race,” she added.

Williams had a disappointing 2018, finishing last in the constructors title race, and will be hoping their all new driver line-up of George Russell and returning Robert Kubica can help bring a change of fortune.

LOS ANGELES - Kevin Durant scored 31 points and picked up the MVP award as Team LeBron rallied from a 20-point deficit to outgun Team Giannis 178-164 in the 2019 NBA All-Star Game on Sunday.

Durant, who also won the MVP award in 2012, got his team untracked in the second half in a game that at one stage threatened to turn into an overblown three-point shooting contest.

Giannis Antetokounmpo, one of the two captains along with LeBron James, led all scorers with 38 points as his handpicked squad scored a record-equaling 53 points in the first quarter and led 95-82 at halftime.

“Previously, my first and second allstar, I think I was kind of nervous,” said Antetokounmpo, who has led the Milwaukee Bucks to the NBA’s best record and is an MVP frontrunner this season.

“This one I was a little bit more relaxed. I had my name on that MVP until the third quarter, and they got hot and took it away from me.”

Defense went out the window especially in the first half, but when it was time to get competitive in the fourth quarter the all-stars buckled down in front of a sold-out crowd of 19,070 at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Team LeBron wouldn’t be denied, coming back from a 20-point third quarter deficit with the help of 20 points from Klay Thompson and 19 from Kawhi Leonard.

Team LeBron also set a record with a total of 91 three point attempts. The teams combined for 81 three point attempts in the first half alone.

“They were scoring too easy,” said Team LeBron player Damian Lillard, who finished with 18 points. “I know it is the All-Star Game but we had to make them work a bit more.

“In this kind of game you can erase those leads quick.”

Paul George and Khris Middleton each scored 20 points for Team Giannis, which got 17 apiece from Stephen Curry and Russell Westbrook in the loss.

Durant said he was honored to be part of the festivities.

“To be out here amongst so much greatness, I really appreciate it,” Durant said.

Charlotte Hornets’ Kemba Walker got one of the loudest cheers of the evening and finished with four points for Team Giannis.

Honorary all-stars Dirk Nowitzki and Dwyane Wade played a combined 13 minutes and scored nine and seven points respectively.

Wade, an American playing for the Miami Heat, is retiring after 16 seasons and Germany’s Nowitzki has played 21 seasons, all with the Dallas Mavericks.

Lenglet and Barca’s new wave aiming to turn their Champions League tide

Clement Lenglet should be untouched by Barcelona’s Champions League failure last season but disappointment reverberates around the club to the extent that he feels it too. “You can just sense around the place there is this scar,” Lenglet told AFP. “It still hurts.”

Lenglet describes it like he was there but he was playing for Sevilla last year, his move to Barcelona still three months away.

He joined a club that had won La Liga at a canter and the Copa del Rey -- but they mourned the season just gone like an opportunity missed.

The 4-1 collapse against Roma sent Barca out in the Champions League quarter-finals and hung over their other achievements like a dark cloud.

Lenglet can be part of the recovery. Barcelona play Lyon in the first leg of the last 16 on Tuesday and, after three years without making the semis, there is a sense of a team on a mission.

“We want to sooth the scar, do something beautiful so we can forget all about what happened,” Lenglet said. “The players were gutted and everyone around the

club was too. We have to show it was a mistake, that we can do better.”

Lyon are European minnows in comparison but their pace on the break and fearless approach puts them in a category of opponent that has caused Barcelona problems this season.

Manchester City, a team not dissimilar in style to Ernesto Valverde’s, emerged from two group games against them with a draw and a defeat. “We often leave players one-on-one in defence so if the ball goes through us, we are at a disadvantage,” Lenglet said.

“There are a lot of moments where we take risks but the balance is important. This is what players are taught when they arrive at Barcelona and it has to be understood quickly. It will be an important part of this match.”

- Steep rise Lenglet’s rise has been steep.

At the start of the 2016-17 season, he was playing for Nancy, the club where he had started out in the youth teams. Sevilla signed him in January and after one full La Liga campaign, Barca had seen enough to meet his 35.9 million-euro ($40.6 million) buyout clause.

Most expected the promising French defender to settle in on the bench at the Camp Nou, but Samuel Umtiti’s knee injury has fast-tracked Lenglet to the role of Gerard Pique’s most regular partner.

He has impressed, his awareness and confidence on the ball deeming him well-suited to a team that defends in flashes and builds from the back.

“It’s every player’s dream to play this often for this kind of club,” Lenglet said. “It gives me

a lot of pride, joy, and a lot of work too, because you have to be at your best, permanently.”

At 23, Lenglet is part of an emerging crop at Barcelona that are being tipped to become leaders of the next generation.

Ousmane Dembele and Arthur Melo have also featured heavily this season while further behind, there are high hopes for Carles Alena, Juan Miranda, Riqui Puig and Oriol Busquets.

“I hope I can be part of the new wave,” Lenglet said. “It’s hard to imagine now because there’s a lot to do before players like Gerard (Pique), Leo (Messi), Sergio (Busquets) or Jordi (Alba) finish.

“I hope they won’t finish too soon. But it’s still exciting to see there are a few new players, young players, coming through.

There is a regeneration of the squad that is preparing for the future and I hope to be a part of that.”

Lenglet is yet to receive his first France call-up, which could

yet come next month, but he is close to Dembele, whose brilliance at Barca has been tempered by indiscipline.

One of the game’s most spectacular talents, Dembele has been punished this season for poor time-keeping and swapping sleep for video games.

“He has enormous potential and he’s a good guy -- when you have those two things, normally you will see it on the pitch,” Lenglet said. “We made fun of him a lot for his problems. It’s a way of fixing it because in a club like this you have to learn to respect the rules.”

Lenglet is a fresh face but speaks with maturity. He also knows what the Champions League means to Barcelona this season -- how Lyon cannot become the Roma of 2018-19.

“We don’t take them lightly,” Lenglet said. “They raise their level against big clubs. We know it will take two very good performances to go through.”(afp)

Bayern carrying German Champions League hopes against Liverpool

Bayern Munich head to Liverpool for Tuesday’s crunch Champions League tie at Anfield demanding improvements and shouldering Germany’s flagging hopes of having a club in the quarter-finals.

Since the 2005-06 season, at least one German side has always made it to the last eight.

That proud run will be under threat if Bayern suffer a heavy defeat in the last-16 first leg ahead of the return game on March 13. “You can’t make mistakes in these games, but I think we can cause Liverpool problems,” said Bayern midfielder James Rodriguez. “We have a team that’s good enough to go through, if it goes well.”

Yet confidence in Bayern’s chances at Anfield dipped on Friday when they twice needed to come from behind for a 3-2 win at Bundesliga strugglers Augsburg, where Rodriguez was substituted after an ineffective 56 minutes.

Despite sitting just above the relegation places, Augsburg were the latest Bundesliga team to expose Bayern’s weaknesses defending against quick counterattacks.

“Everything must be better, but we had Liverpool at the backs of our minds,” admitted Bayern coach Niko Kovac.

“We have to perform differently, but it’ll be at international level and that’s a very different focus -- I assume that it will be a completely different performance from us.”

After Borussia Dortmund’s 3-0 mauling at Tottenham Hotspur last week, and with Schalke facing English champions Manchester City on Wednesday, Bay-

ern hold Germany’s best hope of quarter-final representation.

Dortmund top the Bundesliga ahead of Bayern, but in Europe it is the Bavarians who have made a habit of reaching the latter stages of the Champions League.

“Dortmund have kept the Bundesliga exciting this year, but at this level you can’t make three individual mistakes like that (against Spurs),” said former Dortmund coach Matthias Sammer, now a Eurosport pundit.

“That’s why I believe Bayern are the leaders in this regard and are carrying the flag in the normal picture, which is now emerging.” Any Liverpool fan who watched Bayern struggle at Augsburg would have cause for optimism as the Bavarians’ defence creaked in dramatic fashion.

- Leaking defence Augsburg winger Philipp Max twice found space early on down the left flank which yielded an own goal by Bayern’s Leon Goretzka after just 13 seconds before South Korea midfielder Ji Dong-won drilled home the hosts’ second.

Kingsley Coman, who should be fit despite an ankle injury scare, rescued Bayern with two first-half goals before setting up David Alaba’s winner.

Yet Sammer expects a different story from Bayern at Anfield.

“You can’t compare Augsburg and Liverpool, they (Bayern) will be up for Liverpool,” said Sammer.

“Nevertheless, both (Augsburg) goals came from the wings and you can’t let balls like that through. “If they make those mistakes against Liverpool, it

will be hard.”

Bayern captain Manuel Neuer agrees that they can ill afford Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool the same chances Augsburg were gifted. “Liverpool are a strong, attacking team and will get more chances than Augsburg,” said Neuer, back in goal after three games out with a thumb injury.

“We have to be more compact.

“When we work without the ball, there is order in our games, but on the wings we were caught cold and punished accordingly.” Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said he was disappointed to see Dortmund soundly beaten by Spurs. “I didn’t smile and wasn’t happy that they lost 3-0,” said Rummenigge.

‘Special’ Mbappe fires PSG 12 points clear in France

Kylian Mbappe’s excellent volley secured Paris Saint-Germain a hardfought 1-0 win at SaintEtienne on Sunday as the runaway Ligue 1 leaders moved 12 points clear at the summit.

The 20-year-old Mbappe fired home his league-leading 19th goal of the campaign with 17 minutes remaining.

“He (Mbappe) shows his quality every day in training, he has this hunger to score, score, score,” said PSG coach Tuchel. “It’s his quality.

He is a special player.”

Mbappe has now scored 45 goals

for PSG since signing from Monaco at the start of last season. “We lost to a goal from nowhere... A 20-yearold who will soon be the best player in the world,” said Saint-Etienne coach Jean-Louis Gasset.

With a second straight French title all but secured, Tuchel’s men, who also have two games in hand on second-placed Lille, now have their eyes on breaking their own record tally of 96 points set in 2015-16.

Tuchel rested midfielder Marco Verratti after his excursions in the midweek Champions League vic-

tory at Manchester United, with Leandro Paredes handed his first league start for the club.

“Everyone was tired after Manchester United -- physically, but also mentally,” added Tuchel. “It was necessary to control the game, to play focused.”

PSG fashioned their first clearcut chance in the 18th minute, as Julian Draxler turned and fired over the crossbar after a fine exchange of passes with Dani Alves.

Mbappe saw a shot well saved by home goalkeeper Stephane Ruffier in an underwhelming first half.

The visitors always appeared in control of the game, but Draxler wasted another golden chance to put them ahead shortly after the restart when he was denied by a sprawling Ruffier stop.

Angel Di Maria, who starred with two assists on his return to Old Trafford in midweek, dragged an effort wide as PSG continued to plug away in search of an opening goal.

It arrived in the 73rd minute, as Alves picked out the run of Mbappe, and the Frenchman caught out Ruffier with a fine first-time volley on the turn.

Saint-Etienne started to show more ambition with time running out, but the best they could muster was Kevin Monnet-Paquet’s longrange strike which flew harmlessly over, with the winger injuring himself in the process. A late set-piece came to nothing for Les Verts, as PSG sealed a 20th win from only 23 Ligue 1 games this term.

‘Special’ Mbappe fires PSG 12 points clear in France

Kylian Mbappe’s excellent volley secured Paris Saint-Germain a hardfought 1-0 win at SaintEtienne on Sunday as the runaway Ligue 1 leaders moved 12 points clear at the summit.

The 20-year-old Mbappe fired home his league-leading 19th goal of the campaign with 17 minutes remaining.

“He (Mbappe) shows his quality every day in training, he has this hunger to score, score, score,” said PSG coach Tuchel. “It’s his quality.

Giannis Antetokounmpo, one of the two captains along with LeBron James, led all scorers with 38 points as his handpicked squad scored a record-equaling 53 points in the first quarter and led 95-82 at halftime.

“Previously, my first and second allstar, I think I was kind of nervous,” said Antetokounmpo, who has led the Milwaukee Bucks to the NBA’s best record and is an MVP frontrunner this season.

“This one I was a little bit more relaxed. I had my name on that MVP until the third quarter, and they got hot and took it away from me.”

Defense went out the window especially in the first half, but when it was time to get competitive in the fourth quarter the all-stars buckled down in front of a sold-out crowd of 19,070 at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.

‘Urgent steps’ needed to save Australia’s biggest river system SYDNEY - The viability of a key river that feeds into Australia’s biggest water system is under threat if poor conditions that killed millions of fish are not improved within six months, scientists warned Monday.

The management of the Murray-Darling River system, which stretches thousands of kilometres across several states and supplies Australia’s food bowl, has been under close scrutiny following three mass fish deaths in December and January.

Authorities said millions of fish died in the Darling River events, blamed on low water flow and oxygen levels in the river as well as possibly toxic algae.

Leading scientists who studied the three bouts of kills said that while a severe drought plaguing inland eastern Australia contributed to the deaths, there were also “serious deficiencies in governance and management” of the river network.

“Our review of the fish kills found there isn’t enough water in the Darling system to avoid catastrophic outcomes,” said Craig Moritz, chair of the independent expert panel commissioned by the opposition Labor Party to investigate the deaths.

He said an analysis of rainfall and river flow data over recent decades points to “excess water extraction upstream” in the agricultural regions of Queensland and New South Wales (NSW) states.

If urgent steps are not taken within six months to increase the flow of water, the expert report said, the “viability of the Darling” as well as the communities that depend on it for their livelihoods would be under threat.

Authorities in 2014 launched a vast Murray–Darling Basin Plan to manage water sharing and usage along the length of the system, which runs through five states and territories.

Last month a Royal Commission launched by South Australia state accused officials of “maladministration”, “negligence” and “unlawful” actions in implementing the plan.

Environmental activists and many residents living along the lower reaches of the Murray-Darling system have put much of the blame on abusive water extraction for irrigation by agribusinesses, including major cotton farms in Queensland and NSW. But officials of Australia’s conservative federal government have focused on the impacts of prolonged drought and an unprecedented heat wave during this southern summer as the primary causes of low water flow in the Darling River.

Federal Environment Minister Melissa Price said Monday that “significant rainfall” was needed to alleviate the poor water quality and that release of more water into the system from upstream dams would not improve the conditions. (afp)

Trump aide predicts ‘hundreds of miles’ of border wall by 2020

WASHINGTON - A top adviser to Donald Trump said Sunday that the president’s emergency declaration could allow “hundreds of miles” of barriers to be built on the Mexican border before the 2020 election.

“You’re looking at hundreds of miles,” Stephen Miller said on “Fox News Sunday,” “probably a couple hundred miles”

by September 2020, two months before the election.

Trump has made clear he plans to exploit the issue in his re-election campaign, even amid sharp criticism from Democrats, rights groups, border-state landowners -- and several prominent Republicans.

The president on Friday invoked a “national emergency” to justify tapping military and other funds for barrier construction, after Congress approved less than a fourth the $5.7 billion he had sought for border security.

Miller, echoing Trump’s arguments, said that an unsecured border allowed drugs and criminals to pour into the country. He dismissed government statistics showing illegal entries had fallen.

“You cannot have uncontrolled, unsecured areas of the border where people can pour in undetected,” he said.

But asked to cite an example

of a past president invoking an emergency after being denied funds by Congress, Miller could not do so. “If people don’t like that, they can address it,” he said.

- An ‘imminent’ challenge Given the near-certainty of legal challenges and of a possible blocking move in Congress, it is far from clear how quickly barrier construction can advance on the 1,950-mile (3,140-kilometer) border.

Xavier Becerra, the attorney general of California, told ABC his state would be filing a lawsuit against the project “definitely, and imminently.”

He said California and other states had legal standing in the case because they risked losing moneys intended for military projects, disaster assistance and other purposes. Several states “will be harmed,” he said.

Another Democrat, Senator Tammy Duckworth of Illinois, said she thought Congress could pass a resolution to block Trump’s action but might not

be able to summon the votes to override a likely Trump veto.

Miller stopped just short of predicting a Trump veto, saying simply, “He will protect his national emergency declaration -- guaranteed.”

Several Republican senators have decried the emergency declaration, saying it establishes a dangerous precedent and amounts to executive overreach.

How they might vote on a resolution is unclear.

But one well-known Republican, former Massachusetts governor William Weld, is even entertaining a 2020 primary challenge to the president.

While his chances would appear slim, he argued Sunday on ABC that Americans cannot afford six more years of a president who “wants to divide the country” and is “reckless” in running up trillion-dollar deficits.

He said the emergency declaration was an example of Trump trying to “make himself seem indispensable,” then added, “He’s not indispensable at all.” (afp)

Unicorns are real: Tech baffles Indonesian candidate

JAKARTA — Indonesia’s presidential candidates debated some of the most pressing issues facing the world’s third-largest democracy: dilapidated infrastructure, struggling farmers, forest fires — and unicorns.

When President Joko Widodo, who is seeking a second term, asked challenger Prabowo Subianto about his policies for supporting unicorns — tech start-up companies worth at least $1 billion — a look of bafflement passed across the former general’s face.

Wondering aloud, he replied: “What are unicorns? You mean those online things?” Widodo sagely nodded in the affirmative before Subianto explained he supports online businesses.

Subianto was probably not alone in his ignorance, but Widodo sup-

porters on social media gleefully seized on Sunday night’s exchange as proof of Subianto’s lack of qualification to be president.

Indonesia has several unicorns and they are transforming areas of the national economy such as transport and shopping.

Twitter and Facebook were awash with unicorn memes after the debate.

In one, juxtaposed photos of Widodo and Subianto with thought bubbles above their heads showed Widodo projecting tech start-up logos and Subianto imagining the magical horned horse creature.

Sunday night’s debate was the second of five televised face-offs between the opposing campaigns before April’s election.

Indonesia’s top football official, who has been in the job less than a month, was questioned by police Monday over a match-fixing scandal that has rocked the Southeast Asian nation’s domestic league.

Joko Driyono became acting president of the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) in late January after former chairman Edy Rahmayadi stepped down in the wake of a cor-

ruption probe that has seen police identify more than a dozen suspects.

Driyono was questioned Monday over allegations he was involved in destroying evidence of match-fixing, national police spokesman Dedi Prasetyo said.

“The main focus of today’s examination concerns the problem of destruction, theft and removal of evidence,” Prasetyo told reporters.

Police raided Driyono’s apartment last week and confiscated laptops, flash drives and dozens of documents, including match and financial records.

He has been slapped with a 20day travel ban but has not yet been arrested. Indonesian football has recently been rocked by a series of match-fixing allegations.

a crackdown on match-fixing in December after an executive member of the association was caught on tape trying to bribe a coach approximately $10,000 to throw a second-division game.

He resigned and was handed a three-year ban and fine by a PSSI disciplinary committee.

The 1.4 percent rebound in annualized growth for OctoberDecember contrasted with a revised 2.6 percent contraction in the previous quarter, according to data reported Thursday by the Cabinet Office.

It showed a recovery in consumer demand, investment and government spending in the world’s third-largest economy.

This temple can be said as hidden sanctum of self-purification as located in the cave.

According to local temple priest, I Ketut Kecuh, this temple was established a long time ago. Originally this temple only had one shrine in the mouth of the cave having a spring. “It has existed from a long time, and I just found it as it is and then continue,” said Kecuh.

In the past, Kecuh said that local residents took advantage of the spring in the cave for daily needs. At present the community no longer uses this cave as a source of water for daily needs but is functioned to do melukat or self-purification,” he said.

According to him, the name of Goa Peteng Alam Tunjung Mekar Temple comes from the word goa meaning ‘cave’ and peteng meaning ‘dark.’ Meanwhile, alam means it was formed through natural processes, and Tunjung Mekar represents a hope like a flower looked for by many people.

There are two caves in the temple, namely the cave facing north with the depth of 250 meters and the one facing south with the depth of 300 meters. The cave facing south has two springs. Both springs are considered to symbolize purusha (male aspect) and pradhana (female aspect). However, the cave facing south is not used for melukat, but only for invoking holy water. Meanwhile, the cave used for melukat or self-purification is only the one facing north.

To get to the water source, pilgrims must go down along dozens of stairs. In both caves, there are many bat populations. Local people believe the bats are the animals guarding the cave. In addition, there is also a python belonging to the divine property of the local temple.

Sequence of performing self-purification in the cave temple starts from doing notification ritual. After that, it is resumed with melukat in the cave located in the north by first presenting canang oblation and expressing wishes and hopes. After that, return to go up and beg for water and blessing rice as completion of the procession.

Piodalan or temple anniversary in the cave temple falls on Redite Medangkungan. Since this temple is only supported by three family heads, namely the extended family I Ketut Kecuh, the piodalan is carried out by his extended family only. (kmb)

Difficulty of finding bamboo in Jegog region JEGOG is one of West Bali’s special arts that lately experienced a dilemma. It does nothing to do with less attention to preservation and coaching given to this art. The government and various parties have paid attention to this bamboo musical instrument. A number of festival and other events always even involved Jegog. However, currently the intention is worth giving to the availability of raw materials for this bamboo musical instrument.

Jegog gamelan makers have been in trouble to find bamboo material from the Jembrana region itself for several years, mainly petung bamboo having the largest diameter size. It is increasingly rare and even difficult to find bamboo in the origin of Jegog musical instruments. The artisans are forced to search outside Jembrana like Tabanan and Karangasem, even outside Bali. A number of Jegog artists met recently acknowledged that bamboo material used for making the instrument is indeed difficult to obtain though bamboo was once easily found on the outskirts of the forest in Jembrana.

“Now, there is almost nothing (petung bamboo) and must order outside,” said Oka, a Jegog player from Sangkaragung village. When the bamboo gamelan breaks, it will be difficult and the cost is large enough to replace. Moreover, when the performance is carried out for contest with face-to-face groups, the jegog troupe must prepare the gamelan reserve in case the bamboo blade of the gamelan breaks.

“This has become a dilemma for all of us. In the past, there were still many large-size bamboos that grew and were easily searched for

in Jembrana,” said one of the Jegog artists, Gede Oka Artha Negara.

Due to the shortage of bamboo, he and his father at that time had to plant many different types of bamboo on his land. This successor of Grandpa Jegog revealed that to make the Jegog gamelan sustainable, the role of the government and community is highly expected.

DENPASAR - Balinese traditional food has begun to be abandoned. It happens because the availability of ingredients is also limited like snail, bulun bawon leaves, taro, freshwater crabs et cetera whereas Bali does not only offer roasted pig rice or lawar rice. Chef of the Dedari Kriyamaha Restaurant, I Made Ariana, said that his superiors wanted the food served can feature Balinese traditional cuisines. This purple taro soup is not a typical food from the village, but from Jembrana. However, in Jembrana it is called Remana.

Stem of the taro is then put in salt and pepper, and then cooked for 30 minutes.

Yet uncertainty about the trading relationship between Beijing and Washington hangs over this weekend’s Toy Fair, dampening the festive mood amidst giant balloon cartoon figures and karaoke cars as some 30,000 industry representatives survey the latest and greatest in play.

China manufactures around 85 percent of the toys and games sold in the United States and is also home to a growing consumer market estimated to overtake the US play market in 2022. Aaron Muderick, founder of “Crazy Aaron’s Puttyworld,” a Pennsylvania company, has seen profits hit by US tariffs on raw materials to make his colorful putty and on steel cans, which bear the made in the USA mark.

But Muderick is most worried about losing momentum in the booming Chinese market where he has worked to establish distribution channels and build brand identity.

“We’ve invested a lot of time and dollars,” he told AFP. “If it creates a market where the product is not welcome, where there are retaliatory tariffs that make it impossible for me to reach that consumer, then I lose.”

About 40 Chinese booths are displaying with China Toy & Juvenile Products Association, including companies selling stuffed bears, trampolines, magnetic building blocks and flashing beads.

“Some members feel uncertain, but the business is so far going okay,” said the group’s president, May Liang

in an interview.

Company representatives have reported no drop in interest among their US buyers, said May, who expressed skepticism that the US would impose broad tariffs on toys.

“We believe toys are really consumer-focused especially at holiday season, so we think toys should not be on the tariff list because it will harm consumers.

association, the hosts of Toy Fair, has aggressively lobbied on trade.

Toy industry consultant Richard Gottlieb considers US tariffs on finished toys “highly unlikely” and doesn’t expect the current trade conflict to fundamentally change China’s position in US toys.

“People think we make it in China to make more money,” he said.

“The reason is because if we made it America, it would be five times more expensive and people wouldn’t buy it.”

But the US industry is still worried about Trump administration plans to lift tariffs from 10 percent to 25 percent on raw materials. That increase was scheduled to take effect March 1, but Trump on Friday reiterated that he could delay the increase if a deal is close.

Companies have mostly eaten the hit from a 10 percent hike, but a 25 percent tariff would be much more painful. Putty maker Muderick, for example, saw 2018 profits hit by the tariff on steel but suffered no real hit last year from tariffs on rubber silicone because he bought supply ahead in anticipation of the levy. But he expects more of a profit hit in 2019.

Some toymakers may be in longterm contracts with retailers that lock in price.

“If it goes to 25 percent, companies will go out of business, or they will cut back jobs,” said Neil Helfand, an attorney specializing in trade whose clients include toy companies. (afp)

Australia defends lucrative PNG refugee contracts with obscure firm

SYDNEY - Australian officials Monday defended awarding lucrative contracts to an obscure firm with a beach shack as its registered office, saying they were in a hurry to find a company to provide services at Pacific refugee camps.

The Singapore-registered Paladin Holdings was awarded more than Aus$420 million (US$300 million) -- about Aus$17 million a month -- in contracts to provide security at three transition centres for refugees on Papua New Guinea’s Manus Island.

The operations are part of Canberra’s harsh policy of processing asylum-seekers who try to reach Australia by boat at remote offshore Pacific camps, where hundreds of refugees have been stranded for five years. But questions have been raised about why Paladin was given the contracts after local media reported the firm had little experience, was thinly capitalised and had ties to a senior PNG politician.

The Australian Financial Review said Paladin’s registered office in Australia was a beach shack on Kangaroo Island, a sanctuary for native wildlife off the coast of South Australia.

After the reports surfaced last week, Paladin changed its registered address to an office in Canberra, the newspaper said Monday.

Home Affairs officials grilled about the issue at parliamentary hearings Monday said they resorted to a closed tender -- only approaching one firm to bid -- as PNG suddenly pulled out in mid-2017 from plans to manage the process.

With the Australian-run camp due to close by end-October 2017 after a PNG court ruled it was unconstitutional, the officials said they had to act quickly to find a company to manage three replace-

ment transition centres.

Paladin emerged as the main contender as it served as a subcontractor to previous PNG detention service providers, the officials said.

They added that other firms which previously bid for contracts indicated there was too much “noise” over running Canberra’s asylum offshore detention facilities.

“We were dealing with an urgent situation,” Home Affairs Secretary Mike Pezzullo told the parliamentary committee.

Companies involved in managing the contentious camps, including Spanish construction giant Ferrovial, had been under pressure from human rights campaigners to divest from the projects amid reports of abuse and poor conditions. Ferrovial and other service providers later said they would not tender for future contracts in the wake of the criticism.

Rights activists and refugees have since also complained about conditions in the replacement transition centres.

Attorney-General Christian Porter on Sunday defended the contracts but said reports of links between Paladin and the Manus-based family of a senior PNG politician would “have to be investigated thoroughly”.

Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton, whose portfolio encompasses the offshore detention regime, last week distanced himself from the tender process, saying it was managed by lower-level officials.

Cousins’ computer simulation, still a proof-of-concept version, focuses on how the warm weather surge in house flies and their activity affects the typical spring-summer rise in Campylobacter cases. Under a scenario of summers 2.5 degrees Celsius warmer on average than in

2003, the simulation predicts about 28 percent more Campylobacter cases in the Canadian province of Ontario by 2050, she and colleagues say February 13 in Royal Society Open Science.

Campylobacter infections are most often caused by contaminated food,

perhaps by a fly that’s strolled on other tainted food, an infected animal or feces. Most people recover from an infection within about 10 days. The bacteria are the most common cause of gastrointestinal illness in Canada, with Ontario averaging more than 3,000 cases a year. The United States

has some 1.3 million infections a year.

To set up a simplified simulation, Cousins used data from 2005 on reported Campylobacter infections in Ontario to estimate transmission rates and fly birth and death rates. She then plugged those rates into the simulation to predict subsequent years’ Campylobacter infections. Those results came close to the real data available through 2013, and allowed her to predict future infections under different warming scenarios. The simulation assumes

flies become more active with climate change since, like other insects, they depend on ambient temperatures for heating and cooling. It also assumes bacterial increases with warming.

The study is just the latest to highlight consequences of warming on insect behavior. Other studies have predicted how climate change might increase pest attacks on crops and affect public health, such as Lyme disease’s creep into Canada. (net)

CALIFORNIA - A new, nearly weightless insulation material can withstand extreme heat that would destroy other materials.

The porous aerogel is at least 99 percent open space, with the rest made up of an atomically thin ceramic called hexagonal boron nitride. The design proves extremely durable under high temperatures and rapid temperature shifts of over 1,000 degrees Celsius, researchers report in the Feb. 15 Science.

“It’s notoriously hard to make materials that are not just lightweight, but can also be heavily heat resistant,” says Deep Jariwala, an engineer at the University of Pennsylvania who coauthored a commentary on the study in the same issue of Science. The new ultralight insulator may be especially

well suited to shielding components on spacecraft, which must endure extreme temperature swings when turning toward or away from the sun or re-entering Earth’s atmosphere, he says. The aerogel comprises a network of tiny air pockets, with each pocket separated by two atomically thin layers of hexagonal boron nitride. Much like how double-pane windows prevent heat from escaping a house in winter, the double-pane ceramic barrier makes it difficult for heat to transfer from one air bubble to another. It’s also difficult for heat to spread through the material by traveling along the hexagonal boron nitride layers themselves, because that would require following long, circuitous routes, explains study coauthor Xiangfeng Duan, a chemist and

materials scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Whereas other ceramic aerogels are liable to break down under sudden temperature shifts or extended heat exposure, the new aerogel withstood 500 cycles of rapid heating and cooling from –198° C to 900° C, as well as sitting at a scalding 1400° C for one week. A piece of the insulator also successfully shielded a flower held over a roughly 500° C flame.

Because the material’s structure is so sparse, it’s probably not usable on its own, says Julia Greer, a materials scientist at Caltech not involved in the work. The aerogel is resilient in the sense that it’s soft and squishable.

But to protect the aerogel from tears, it would likely have to be packaged inside a sturdier material, she says. (net)

This graduate from the Photography Department, Faculty of Arts and Design at the Indonesia Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar ‘explored’ the charming beauty of the Badung landscape through a 360o camera as his final assignment. He said the shape of a 360o camera resembles to a round earth showing off all the contents in it clearly. This camera can also capture images having many points of interest such as natural scenery, room atmosphere, market crowds, and the like.

“I am very much challenged to explore the natural beauty of Badung through a 360o camera in the perspective of the photographic art. I find something very unique and dramatic there,” said the man from Sading village, Badung.

According to the name it carries, said Kurniawan, the camera has the ability to take photos or record videos up to a 360o angle. In other words, we cannot only see camera footage or photos from just one corner, but also around them. Nevertheless, the role of humans is still the main thing in order to be able to produce a work that does not only review documentation using ideas.

As the technology develops, this modified 360o camera is modified to be simpler where

one of them is in terms of design. The camera Gear 360o in 2017, for example, has a round design like an eyeball with two lenses placed on the front and rear respectively. There is an addition of a kind of grip in the new version. This design will make users easier to hold or use the device. In previous version, the design was only round, without a grip and only equipped with accessories such as a tripod to facilitate grip.

Meanwhile, the Gear 360o camera is equipped with two cameras with a resolution of 15MP each. “There are two ways to take photos using this 360o camera namely by taking via cellular devices and retrieving directly from a 360o camera,” explained Kurniawan.

Jussie Smollett assault inquiry has shifted, say Chicago police

CHICAGO - Police want to reinterview Jussie Smollett after saying “the trajectory of the investigation” into the reported attack on the Empire actor had shifted.

The move comes after Chicago investigators released without charge two Nigerian brothers they had detained for questioning earlier in the week.

In response, lawyers for Smollett said the star would continue to cooperate with police, but felt “victimised” by reports he might have been involved in the attack.

“Nothing is further from the truth and anyone claiming otherwise is lying,” a statement issued by law firm Todd Pugh and Victor P Henderson said.

Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said: “We can confirm that the information received from the individuals questioned by police earlier in the Empire case has in fact shifted the trajectory of the investigation.

“We’ve reached out to the Em-

pire cast member’s attorney to request a follow-up interview.”

Smollett has said he was attacked by two masked men shouting racial and anti-gay slurs and “This is MAGA (Make America Great Again) country!”.

He said they looped a rope around his neck before running away as he was out getting food at a Subway restaurant early on 29 January. He said they also poured an unknown chemical substance on him. On Wednesday, Chicago police picked up two brothers at O’Hare International Airport as they returned from Nigeria.

They described them as “suspects” in the assault, questioned them and searched their apartment.

However, late on Friday police said they were no longer suspects.

One of the men is Smollett’s personal trainer who he hired to get him physically ready for a music video, the statement from the actor’s lawyers said. (net)

Dua Lipa unveils waxwork at Madame Tussauds

LONDON - Pop star Dua Lipa has posed with a waxwork of herself at Madame Tussauds, in a surprise appearance ahead of the Brit Awards on Wednesday.

The 23-year-old described the experience as “surreal” after unveiling the figure in front of fans in London on Friday night.

The display has been dubbed the Glow Room and features the outfit Lipa wore for her Glastonbury 2017 performance.

She also picked up two Grammys at last Sunday’s ceremony in Los Angeles for Best New Artist

and Best Dance Recording.

The Glow Room will allow fans to pose with the waxwork as 10 cameras fire to create a 3D animated image, which can be shared to social media.

At the launch, the star said: “It blows my mind. It’s pretty crazy to see it come to life. I’m hoping I can take it home with me.

“I’ve been to Madame Tussauds a few times when I was younger and I took my family when they’ve come down from Kosovo and Holland and it’s always been a really

fun experience.”

She added in a Tweet that she had been “missing” her London fans.

Madame Tussauds general manager Steve Davies said: “We had a lot of fun setting up this special moment with Dua for her fans.

“2019 already looks set to be another groundbreaking year for her and it’s about time we celebrated our fellow Londoner.”

Haiti president breaks silence after week of violent unrest

Haitian President Jovenel Moise on Thursday broke his silence after a week of violent protests demanding his resignation as the US announced it was pulling “non-emergency personnel” from the country over the deadly unrest.
