Alec Baldwin defends film maker Woody Allen as Hollywood backs away LOS ANGELES - Actor Alec Baldwin on Tuesday expressed support for film maker Woody Allen as a growing number of entertainment industry stars seek to distance themselves from the “Annie Hall” director as part of the Time’s Up campaign against sexual misconduct. Baldwin, who appeared in three of Allen’s films, said on Twitter that the renunciation of the director and his work was “unfair and sad to me.” Baldwin said working with Allen was “one of the privileges of my career.” Allen has repeatedly denied decades-old accusations that he molested his adopted daughter Dylan Farrow when she was seven years old in the early 1990s. But sentiment has turned against him during the sexual misconduct scandal sweeping Hollywood that has led to dozens of successful men being forced to resign or being dropped from projects. “I am credible, and I am telling the truth, and I think it’s important that people realize that one victim,

one accuser, matters. And that they are enough to change things,” Farrow said in an advance excerpt from a television interview due to be broadcast on the CBS show “This Morning” on Thursday. Baldwin said he did not intend to “dismiss or ignore such complaints.” “But accusing people of such crimes should be treated carefully,” he added. Representatives of Allen did not respond to a request for comment on Tuesday. The director has never been charged with a crime. Allen, 82, won Oscars for the films “Annie Hall,” “Hannah and Her Sisters” and the 2011 comedy “Midnight in Paris,” and continues to release a new movie almost every year. Timothee Chalamet, 22, the star of gay romance “Call me By Your Name,” this week became the latest actor to announce he will donate the salary he earned from an Allen movie to “Time’s Up” and other causes for sexual abuse victims. He followed Rebecca Hall, Ellen Page and Mira Sorvino who have made donations or issued regrets about working with Allen in recent weeks. Last week “Lady Bird” director Greta Gerwig, who acted in the 2012 film “To Rome with Love,” said she would not work with Allen again. The “Time’s Up” campaign against sexual harassment in the workplace was launched two weeks ago by more than 300 Hollywood industry figures. Allen’s most recent film “Wonder Wheel,” distributed by Amazon Studios, has fared poorly at the North American box office taking only $1.4 million since its Dec. 1 release. Hong Kong star Eric Tsang denies sexual assault allegations

HONG KONG - Hong Kong celebrity Eric Tsang denied allegations of sexual misconduct on Wednesday and said he was taking legal action against one of his two accusers. Tsang, a household name in Hong Kong, China, Taiwan and Chinese-speaking communities around the world, is one of the most high-profile Asian stars to face such accusations amid a global campaign against sexual harassment and assault. Speaking at a news conference, Tsang denied any wrongdoing after being accused in widely circulated online reports of raping a Hong Kong actress in Singapore in the 1990s. “Recently, there are some untrue reports on the Internet about myself. Those reports carry very serious accusations towards me,” said Tsang. “They have affected my reputation, and sadly, they have hurt my supporting friends, my beloved family, my children ... I feel that there is a need for me to now step up and to make a public response.” Tsang, an actor, comedian, director and producer, described the rape allegation as “totally made-up”.

“I am willing to cooperate with any investigation,” he said. He also said that he was taking legal action against Grace Han, a former head of the Ford Modelling agency in Asia, over allegations she had posted on Weibo, China’s version of Twitter. “Regarding Madam Han’s untrue accusations on Sina Weibo, I have already undertaken legal action to sue her. Currently, legal proceedings are under way,” said Tsang, who took no questions from reporters. Han had written on her verified Weibo account in January, after the rape reports began circulating, that Tsang had made “sexual assaults

on female celebrities more than once”. On another occasion, she said Tsang had tried to spike the drinks of some of her models in a karaoke lounge in Hong Kong. Han gave no immediate response to a Reuters request for comment. The campaign aimed at raising awareness of sexual harassment and assault, epitomised by the #MeToo social media hashtag, was last month named Time magazine’s 2017 “Person of the Year”. North, South Korea to march together under one flag at Winter Olympics

SEOUL - The two Koreas will field a combined women’s ice hockey team and march together under one flag at next month’s Winter Olympics in the South, Seoul said on Wednesday, after a new round of talks amid a thaw in cross-border ties. North and South Korea have been talking since last week - for the first time in more than two years - about the Olympics, offering a respite from a months-long standoff over Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile programmes, although Japan urged caution over the North’s “charm offensive”. The two Koreas will compete as a unified team in the Olympics for the first time, though they have joined forces at other international sports events before. North Korea will send a delegation of more than 400, including 230 cheerleaders, 140 artists and 30 Taekwondo players for a demonstration, a joint press statement released by Seoul’s Unification Ministry said, adding the precise number of athletes will be hammered out after discussions with the IOC scheduled for later

Post-eruption impact, Small businesses start to revive gradually

AMLAPURA - The activities of Mount Agung since last September have caused economic turmoil until these days. Many small businesses eventually went bankrupt. In the meantime, some others remain to survive. After entering 2018, a number of small businesses are reviving.

This also happens to a small barbershop business in the town of Amlapura pursued by Wayan Supradnya aka Ranyok. When the first warning alert status was announced last September 22, Ranyok admitted to shock. For three days, his business did not get any visitor coming to use his services. Many of his customers have evacuated, but he did not because his residence is not included in disaster-prone areas. He had been maddening for months because the business pioneered in 2007 was almost totally dead. He admitted to be once pessimistic as his small business was going to end. However, on entering 2018, he gained optimism that his small business can revive again, after the one by one of his customers came back. This is in line with the people of Karangasem, especially the town of Amlapura getting used to seeing the eruption of Mount Agung. Precisely, when Mount Agung erupts, people are no longer busy evacuating. However, they will be busy taking handphone to immortalize the moments of phreatic eruptions. “Now, though the status of Mount Agung remains in warning, my business is not affected,” said Ranyok, when met amid his activities on Wednesday (Jan. 17). In 2007, Ranyok with the help of his wife was desperate to contract a small room for his barbershop

business named ‘Wajah Baru’ (New Face) around Kerti Celuk Negara hamlet on Jalan Teuku Umar, Amlapura. Now, he has been successful enough to run the small business for years. So, it can support his wife and two children. Within a day, dozens of customers come. He has many loyal customers consisting of young people, adults, elders and even officials. Various models of young hairstyles he has mastered. Moreover, he often received calls to provide home service for sick customers. The advantages compared to other barbershops, Ranyok have skills of massage services. After shaving, customers will get massage service on their shoulders to feel more refreshed. Moreover, since pioneering in 2007, dozens of former employees have opened their own business. He also often shares his shaving skills with his friends outside Karangasem, such as Denpasar and Buleleng. “I get skills from other people, so I must also share with others in need,” said Ranyok, a middle-aged man from Tegallinggah. He hoped the activities of Mount Agung can be back to normal, so that Karangasem’s economy can gradually revive. Currently, various other businesses also start to become crowded, such as the ritual paraphernalia, distributors of fresh fruits and shopping complex along Jalan Gajah Mada. Meanwhile, some other businesses are still difficult to revive as ever before like the restaurant business along Jalan Untung Surapati or on Jalan Veteran, Amlapura. Many newly opened restaurants were immediately closed on September 22 last year. Until these days, some of the restaurants do not open again whereas the contract period is still a few years away. Inmates of Gianyar Detention House creatively make keben craft

GIANYAR - Dozens of inmates at Gianyar Detention House are now starting to productively make keben (sealed basket) crafts. The orders for handicrafts made from newspaper waste are also quite high. Infrequently, the inmates are overwhelmed to meet the orders. Naturally, in addition to having strong quality, this craft also looks interesting as embellished with ornament in the form of fruits or barong mask. Head of Gianyar Detention House, Made Astra, said the keben is made from newspaper waste. At first glance, it looks like a bamboo material, but when observed more thoroughly, this craft is made from twisted newspaper waste. “This keben is made by the inmate from colored newspaper waste of one issue,” he said when met on Wednesday (Jan. 17). He explained that making the keben craft looks easy but actually difficult. Initially, a newspaper page is cut into four parts. After that, each part is twisted to resemble a stick. “The twist is then strung together and pasted with glue. Next, make the base first to be followed by the circle,”

Nusa Penida still hampered by some problems SEMARAPURA - Tourism development in Nusa Penida, Klungkung district is growing rapidly. The visits are not only enlivened by domestic tourists, but also foreign tourists. Thus, such condition puts the islands known as the Blue Paradise Island a source of regionally generated revenue. However, behind it a myriad of problems are still complicated, such as environmental damage and rampant illegal tourist transport. On that account, Commission I of the Klungkung House of Representatives urged the district government to immediately resolve them. This was revealed in a joint working meeting of the Food Security and Fishery Agency, Transportation Agency and Integrated Licensing and Investment Office (P2TSP) on Wednesday (Jan. 17). At a meeting attended by the Chairman of the Klungkung House of Representatives, I Wayan Baru, a member of Commission I, I Gede Jana, it was stated that according to the result of observation, the coral reef damage in the waters of Nusa Penida remains quite rampant. The effort to rehabilitate and anticipate further damage by Bali provincial government as the owner of the management authority is considered not to run maximally. If referring to Law No.32/2009 on Environmental Protection and Management, Article 82 paragraph 1 declares that Minister, Governor or Regent / Mayor has the authority to force the persons in charge of the business and or the activity to conduct environmental restoration due to pollution and or destruction of the environment they have done. “We encourage this can be applied by district government as a weapon to resolve it (damage—Ed). PLN’s lowers electricity consumption growth rate target for 2018

DENPASAR - The growth rate of the consumption of electricity on Bali between 2014- 2016 is recorded to have been 8-9 percent. In 2016 the growth reached 11 percent. According to the Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL) for 2017-2026, the average electricity consumption growth rate is targeted at 8.5 percent. However, in 2017 an anomaly occurred in that electricity consumption decreased. For the first time ever, the growth rate of electricity consumption in Bali was down 0.05 percent. PLN Bali Distribution is therefore taking this into consideration and setting the targeted growth rate for the consumption of electricity in Bali in 2018 at just 6.5 percent. General Manager of PLN Bali Distribution, I Nyoman Suwarjoni Astawa, said that the consumption of electricity in 2017 went down due to Balinese feeling frugal in light of the volcanic activity of Mount Agung that affected many people’s income. Also there is more public awareness about using electricity sparingly and psychologically the news of increases to electricity tariff increases backed this up. City of Denpasar encourages urban farming

DENPASAR - The Municipality of Denpasar is always open to innovations in urban development. For instance, Mahasaraswati University and the Tukad Bindu Foundation have taken the initiative to encourage urban farming in the City of Denpasar. The Tukad Bindu Foundation has not only cleaned up the Tukad Bindu river shores and provided access to recreation and other activities, but they are also creative innovative opportunities for education. When asked to comment, Subdivision Head of Information and Public Relations, Regional Secretariat of Denpasar, I Wayan Hendaryana, said that Denpasar’s municipal government is very supportive and encouraging of the private sector and other stakeholders in developing innovative forms of agriculture in the City of Denpasar. Because this urban landscape has a limited amount of green space, creativity and technology are needed to allow for agriculture and urban farming in this part of Bali. “The Government of Denpasar certainly considers such innovations to be very helpful, whether they are initiated by the private sector or other stakeholders. So, we certainly encourage people to develop means food security by utilizing the land in their yards to its fullest potential”, said Hendrayana. Prof. Yudariani from Mahasaraswati University’s Faculty of Agriculture said that they are cooperating with the Tukad Bindu Foundation and the Municipality of Denpasar municipality to develop urban farming. Their commitment was made official though a Letter of Acceptance (LoA) signed by all the stakeholders involved. “We have all signed the LoA related to the utilization of some of the land next to Tukad Bindu River which will be used as a field laboratory by our Faculty

of Agriculture”, explained Yudariani. She further, that urban farming involves adapting conventional agricultural techniques to the urban setting and explained that the main difference between the two types of farming is the purpose. “Conventional agriculture is oriented towards production while urban farming is more oriented towards the needs of urban people”, she said. The urban farming activities being carried out every Sunday on the area of ??200 square meters is expected to provide a challenge for the students and the surrounding communities with regards to yielding maximum benefits from a small area of land. So far the plan is to run the program for three years. The first year will focus on dividing up the river banks for specific crops. The following year will be focused on continuing the implementation of the program and consolidation. The third year is aimed at empowering the community that lives around Tukad Bindu River. “In addition to serving as a place for recreation, Tukad Bindu River can also serve to educate the public – particularly in the filed of agriculture. The facilities at Tukad Bindu include fitness machines for kids, local food stalls, rest areas to enjoy the scenery, as well as aerobics for nearby residents and other activities as well. MANGUPURA - Since the eruption of Mount Agung, tourism players, including car rental businesses have been hit hard. For the last few months there has been a drastic decrease in the number of tourists visiting Bali which means there are less tourists renting cars. With the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Annual Meeting set to take place in Bali next October, car rental businesses are starting to have high hopes that their income will be boosted as delegates from some 189 countries will be attending the big event. Chairman of Bali Car Rental Organization (Asperda), P. Budy Hartono, said that this event is good news for the tourism sector in general and the transportation sector in particular. The IMF Annual meeting will require some 1,100

cars including large and fancier vehicles and as well as regular cars. The number of cars that will be needed was made known during a recent coordination meeting with Angkasa Pura (AP I). “This number includes the car

needs for all the guests including heads of government, ministers and their staff. Up to a month before such events some delegates such as economic advisors will already be here”, said Hartono in Tuban on Tuesday (Jan. 16).

Hartono aded that Angkasa Pura also plans to prepare an additional 1,000 car capacity parking lot to welcome the event. Other preparations such s the construction of an intersection at the Ngurah Rai monument have already started. “We have high hopes for the IMF Annual Meeting in Bali that will run from October 1419. Management of Penglipuran improves public facilities BANGLI - The management of Penglipuran Tourism Village, is continuing to make improvements to a number of facilities in Penglipuran village in order that the attractions become more beautiful and to provide increased comfort to visitors. Operations Manager of Penglipuran Tourism Village, I Nengah Moneng, revealed on Tuesday (Jan. 16) that a number of public facilities in Penglipuran have become damaged. The main road for example has been damaged from the large number of vehicles passing through. The toilets in the village also need to be worked on. There are still not enough toilets and many of the existing ones are

currently out of order. “We are planning to make these improvements and repairs this year. Some of the toilets have already started to be repaired. We want to improve these facilities so that tourists feel comfortable when they visit Penglipuran Village. We also want to provide good service so that visitors are satisfied with their visit”, added Moneng. There are also plans to install CCTVs at certain points in the village so that the security of visitors can be monitored directly. During the Penglipuran Village Festival for example, there was a traffic jam at hero monument but the management of the village could not moni-

tor the and react to the situation at the time. “With CCTVs we will be able to monitor our visitors as well as certain locations. WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump on Wednesday aligned himself solidly with conservative Republicans on immigration, criticizing a proposed bipartisan deal as “horrible” on U.S. border security and “very, very weak” on reforms for the legal immigration system. The Senate proposal - aimed at addressing Democrats’ demands for protections for young adults brought to the United States illegally as children and dubbed “Dreamers” - fell far short of what most Republicans believe needs to happen, the president said. “It’s the opposite of what I campaigned for,” Trump told Reuters in an interview. The plan was presented to Trump last week by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and Democratic Senator Dick Durbin. Trump drew international condemnation after reports emerged that he had questioned the value of taking immigrants from Africa and the Caribbean nation of Haiti during a closed-door meeting with lawmakers at the White House last Thursday, referring to them as “shithole” countries. Trump has denied using that word. Trump in the interview on Wednesday declined to say what specific words he used. “I’m not going to get into what I said, but I will tell you, it was a tough meeting,” Trump said. Many Democrats have said they will not vote for spending legislation to keep the federal government funded past a Friday deadline without an immigration deal, and Republicans will need at least some Democratic votes to pass the funding extension in the Senate. Trump said he thinks a deal on immigration is still possible. “Time is running out,” he said. Democrats said the negotiated plan addressed Trump priorities, including $2.7 billion for additional border security funding. “The president can’t seem to take yes for an answer and is heading towards a shut down, which would fall squarely on his back,” Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said in a statement emailed to Reuters.

Trump said a federal government shutdown “could happen” at the end of the week, insisting Democrats would be blamed if that occurs even though Republicans control both chambers of Congress and the White House. WASHINGTON - Do not expect U.S. President Donald Trump to hit the gym, despite his doctor’s orders. He gets plenty of exercise on the golf course and at the White House complex, the president told Reuters on Wednesday. “I get exercise. I mean I walk, I this, I that,” Trump, 71, said during an Oval Office interview. “I run over to a building next door. I get more exercise than people think.” Dr. Ronny Jackson, the White House physician, said on Tuesday that Trump was in excellent health overall but needed to lose weight, eat better, and break a sweat more often. The fast-food-loving Trump praised Jackson, who has served as a physician to previous presidents, but seemed wary of taking the not-so-subtle suggestion to use the White House’s exercise facilities. “A lot of people go to the gym and they’ll work out for two hours and all. I’ve seen people ... then they get their new knees when they’re 55 years old and they get their new hips and they do all those things. I don’t have those problems,” Trump said. He did say he was open to changing his diet, perhaps with smaller portion sizes on White House meals. Trump’s predecessors, Democrat Barack Obama and Republican George W. Bush, were fitness enthusiasts, but Trump has no daily workout routine. He gets exercise by playing golf, he said, even though he typically rides around the course in a golf cart. WASHINGTON - U.S. industrial production increased more than expected in December as unseasonably cold weather at the end of the month boosted demand for heating, but manufacturing output barely rose, pointing to moderate growth in the industrial sector. Strong demand for utilities reported by the Federal Reserve on Wednesday bolstered expectations of an acceleration in consumer spending in the fourth quarter, prompting some economists to bump up their economic growth estimates for the October-December period. “This is consistent with the solid growth story,” said Jennifer Lee, a senior economist at BMO Capital Markets in Toronto. The Fed said industrial output surged 0.9 percent last month also buoyed by robust gains in mining production, after slipping 0.1 percent in November. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast industrial production advancing 0.4 percent in December. It rose at an annual rate of 8.2 percent in the fourth quarter, the biggest gain since the second quarter of 2010. For all of 2017, industrial output rose 1.8 percent, the first and largest increase since 2014. In another report, the U.S. central bank said the economy continued to expand from late November through the end of 2017. In its Beige Book report of anecdotal information on business activity collected from contacts nationwide, the Fed said “the outlook for 2018 remains optimistic for a majority of contacts across the country.” The reports were seen supportive of an interest rate increase in March from the Fed. Prices for U.S. Treasuries fell, with the yield on the interest rate sensitive two-year note hitting a nine-year high. The dollar briefly rose against a basket of currencies, but later surrendered gains. Stocks on Wall Street were trading higher. SINGAPORE - The euro nursed losses on Thursday, having retreated from a three-year high after comments from European Central Bank officials this week hinted at concerns over the currency’s recent strength. The euro’s pull-back from highs helped stabilise the greenback, which has come under pressure as central banks of other major economies begin to move toward tighter monetary policy amid a more synchronised global recovery. The euro last stood at $1.2194, up 0.1 percent on the day but well below a peak of $1.2323 set on Wednesday, the euro’s strongest level since December 2014. ECB policymakers may have been caught off guard by the speed of the euro’s appreciation, said Lee Jin Yang, macro research analyst for Aberdeen Standard Investments in Singapore. “Maybe they are trying to manage volatility or slow down the rise,” Lee said. The common currency had slipped on Wednesday as ECB policymaker Ewald Nowotny told reporters the euro’s recent strength against the dollar is “not helpful,” which encouraged a bout of profit-taking before a policy meeting next week. In an interview with an Italian newspaper Vitor Constancio, the ECB vice president, said he did not rule out that monetary policy would still continue to be “very accommodating for a long time”. There could be some profit-taking and consolidation in the euro ahead of the ECB’s policy meeting next week, although the currency’s outlook over 2018 looks positive, said Roy Teo, investment strategist for LGT Bank in Singapore. “We see upside risk towards $1.30 by the end of this year... It’s surprising to note that growth in the euro zone is actually similar if not outpacing the U.S,” Teo said. The greenback gained some respite against other major peers. Against the yen, the dollar rose 0.1 percent to 111.36 yen , having bounced from Wednesday’s four-month low of 110.19 yen. On Wednesday, the Canadian dollar had fluctuated in a relatively wide range of C$1.2540 to C$1.2362. Later on Thursday, investors will turn their focus to China’s fourth-quarter and 2017 gross domestic product data, and data on December factory output, retail sales and fixed-asset investment. The surge in industrial production pushed up capacity utilization, a measure of how fully industries are deploying their resources, to 77.9 percent. That was the highest since February 2015 and followed a 77.2 percent rate in November. Capacity utilization is 2 percentage points below its long-run average. The gamelan composition played when the performance of puppet shadow begins with tabuh petegak like the Sekar Sungsang and selendro scales. After that, the gamelan composition played is Tabuh Pamungkah used when commencing to play the klayon to finish of the klayon. Then, it is resumed with paguneman where the puppet is stabbed accompanied by gamelan composition entitled Tulang Lindung. After stabbing the puppets, it is continued with gamelan entitled Panyacah Parwa in the form of alas arum. When the puppet is told to walk or move, it will use angkat-angkatan gamelan music. Moreover, when the puppet is crying it uses special mesem gamelan composition for slant-eyed puppets. For the puppet with glowering eyes, it will use rebong gamelan music and during wartime it will use bebatelan. “Thus, in once staging from the beginning to finish, it will use approximately 10 gamelan compositions with an average duration of two minutes except for the Tabuh Petegak whose duration is approximately 15 minutes,” he said. Police comb through filthy California home where starving siblings found

PERRIS - Investigators on Wednesday conducted an exhaustive search of the foulsmelling, filthy tract home east of Los Angeles where a California couple are accused of keeping captive and nearly starving their 13 minor and adult children, police said. David Turpin, 57, and Louise Turpin, 49, were set to go before a judge in Riverside County on Thursday on charges of torture and child endangerment in the case, which came to light over the weekend after their 17-year-old daughter escaped through a window and alerted police. “We have investigators on scene, combing through everything they can find for additional evidence,” Riverside Sheriff’s Deputy Mike Vasquez said by telephone. “They’re trying to gather more information that may assist them in providing a full description of what was going on there. “The whole house is a crime scene,” he added. Officers raided the house in the small city of Perris, about 70 miles (113 km) east of Los Angeles, on Sunday after the 17-year-old, whose name was not released, called the 911 emergency number on a cellphone. She was so small and emaciated, officers at first thought she was about 10 years old. Dinosaur tail to be auctioned for Mexico quake reconstruction MEXICO CITY - A fossilized dinosaur tail discovered in Morocco will be auctioned on Tuesday night in Mexico to raise funds for the reconstruction of thousands of schools damaged by two earthquakes that struck the Latin American nation in September. The 4-metre-(13-foot)-long, 180kg (396-pound) tail will be offered at a reserve price of 1.8 million Mexican pesos ($95,805), according to organizer Morton’s Auction House. Anything raised above the reserve price will be donated to the BBVA Bancomer Foundation to help finance the reconstruction of some 5,000 damaged schools. The extremity belonged to a 17-metre (56-foot), 22-tonne sauropod of the Atlasaurus imelakei species that roamed the Atlas Mountains of Morocco during the Middle Jurassic, some 165 million years ago.

The group of dinosaurs called sauropods were massive four-legged plant-eaters with long necks and long tails, and included the largest land animals ever on Earth. Indonesia exchange walkway collapse due to “building failure” -initial report JAKARTA - Loose or corroded joints may have caused the sudden collapse of a mezzanine floor at the Indonesian Stock Exchange building this week that sent visiting students plunging to the ground, a preliminary report by the public works ministry has found. More than 70 people were injured in Monday’s incident, which was captured on dramatic CCTV footage that showed a walkway giving way under the students, some of whom were trapped beneath slabs of concrete and other debris. The accident in Jakarta’s plush financial district has shocked even a country that is used to natural and manmade disasters and where safety standards are often loosely enforced. The ministry’s report said the suspended walkway fell because several cables broke away from the ceiling due to a “concentration of weight” in one spot where nearly 100 university students visiting the exchange had gathered. “The burden could not be borne by the ... structure and triggered a building failure,” said the report, which was reviewed by Reuters on Tuesday. The initial conclusion was that the collapse may have been caused by “loose or corroded bolts” or “shearing joints”. The report said the walkway was part of the original structure, built in the late 1990s, and not added later. The public works ministry said its report was based on interviews with building management, visual observations and analysis of CCTV footage on social media, but added that its team did not have direct access to the site. “Further and closer observation is required on-site, and of construction documents,” it said. The public works ministry’s press department said in a statement: “We would like to convey that this report is a preliminary report of the results of a review by ministry staff, that is unofficial.” The high-rise building is part of a two-tower complex owned and developed by PT Danayasa Arthatama Tbk, part of Artha Graha group. It houses dozens of offices, including the World Bank’s Indonesia branch. A company spokesman had earlier declined to comment on the incident. No one from the company could immediately be reached for comment on the findings of the preliminary report.

LONDON - Chelsea won a penalty shootout to beat second tier Norwich City on Wednesday and sneak into the FA Cup fourth round following a tempestuous replay that ended 1-1 after extra time with the Premier League champions reduced to nine men. Police comb through filthy California home where starving siblings found

PERRIS - Investigators on Wednesday conducted an exhaustive search of the foulsmelling, filthy tract home east of Los Angeles where a California couple are accused of keeping captive and nearly starving their 13 minor and adult children, police said. David Turpin, 57, and Louise Turpin, 49, were set to go before a judge in Riverside County on Thursday on charges of torture and child endangerment in the case, which came to light over the weekend after their 17-year-old daughter escaped through a window and alerted police. “We have investigators on scene, combing through everything they can find for additional evidence,” Riverside Sheriff’s Deputy Mike Vasquez said by telephone. “They’re trying to gather more information that may assist them in providing a full description of what was going on there. “The whole house is a crime scene,” he added. Officers raided the house in the small city of Perris, about 70 miles (113 km) east of Los Angeles, on Sunday after the 17-year-old, whose name was not released, called the 911 emergency number on a cellphone. She was so small and emaciated, officers at first thought she was about 10 years old. On Wednesday afternoon, several investigators, some wearing black gloves, went in and out of the house, frequently carrying boxes and bags of material they placed in waiting vehicles. Inside the garage, floor-to-ceiling shelves that appeared to be stacked with DVDs could be seen. Dinosaur tail to be auctioned for Mexico quake reconstruction MEXICO CITY - A fossilized dinosaur tail discovered in Morocco will be auctioned on Tuesday night in Mexico to raise funds for the reconstruction of thousands of schools damaged by two earthquakes that struck the Latin American nation in September. The 4-metre-(13-foot)-long, 180kg (396-pound) tail will be offered at a reserve price of 1.8 million Mexican pesos ($95,805), according to organizer Morton’s Auction House. Anything raised above the reserve price will be donated to the BBVA Bancomer Foundation to help finance the reconstruction of some 5,000 damaged schools. The extremity belonged to a 17-metre (56-foot), 22-tonne sauropod of the Atlasaurus imelakei species that roamed the Atlas Mountains of Morocco during the Middle Jurassic, some 165 million years ago.

The group of dinosaurs called sauropods were massive four-legged plant-eaters with long necks and long tails, and included the largest land animals ever on Earth. Indonesia exchange walkway collapse due to “building failure” -initial report JAKARTA - Loose or corroded joints may have caused the sudden collapse of a mezzanine floor at the Indonesian Stock Exchange building this week that sent visiting students plunging to the ground, a preliminary report by the public works ministry has found. More than 70 people were injured in Monday’s incident, which was captured on dramatic CCTV footage that showed a walkway giving way under the students, some of whom were trapped beneath slabs of concrete and other debris. The accident in Jakarta’s plush financial district has shocked even a country that is used to natural and manmade disasters and where safety standards are often loosely enforced. The ministry’s report said the suspended walkway fell because several cables broke away from the ceiling due to a “concentration of weight” in one spot where nearly 100 university students visiting the exchange had gathered. “The burden could not be borne by the ... structure and triggered a building failure,” said the report, which was reviewed by Reuters on Tuesday. The initial conclusion was that the collapse may have been caused by “loose or corroded bolts” or “shearing joints”. The report said the walkway was part of the original structure, built in the late 1990s, and not added later. The public works ministry said its report was based on interviews with building management, visual observations and analysis of CCTV footage on social media, but added that its team did not have direct access to the site. “Further and closer observation is required on-site, and of construction documents,” it said. The public works ministry’s press department said in a statement: “We would like to convey that this report is a preliminary report of the results of a review by ministry staff, that is unofficial.” The high-rise building is part of a two-tower complex owned and developed by PT Danayasa Arthatama Tbk, part of Artha Graha group. It houses dozens of offices, including the World Bank’s Indonesia branch. A company spokesman had earlier declined to comment on the incident. No one from the company could immediately be reached for comment on the findings of the preliminary report.

The second tower was reopened for business on Tuesday and authorities were aiming to reopen the tower where the incident happened on Wednesday. One expert said the preliminary report had “reasonable conclusions” and that such incidents can be difficult to predict. “It may be because of degradation of materials over time and because of earthquakes, and to prevent that we would have to develop more foolproof materials and connections,” said Davy Sukamta, head of the Indonesian society of civil and structural engineers. “If a building has a special construction like this, it must be inspected more regularly for wear and tear.” (rtr)

WASHINGTON - U.S. industrial production increased more than expected in December as unseasonably cold weather at the end of the month boosted demand for heating, but manufacturing output barely rose, pointing to moderate growth in the industrial sector. Strong demand for utilities reported by the Federal Reserve on Wednesday bolstered expectations of an acceleration in consumer spending in the fourth quarter, prompting some economists to bump up their economic growth estimates for the October-December period. “This is consistent with the solid growth story,” said Jennifer Lee, a senior economist at BMO Capital Markets in Toronto. The Fed said industrial output surged 0.9 percent last month also buoyed by robust gains in mining production, after slipping 0.1 percent in November. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast industrial production advancing 0.4 percent in December. It rose at an annual rate of 8.2 percent in the fourth quarter, the biggest gain since the second quarter of 2010. For all of 2017, industrial output rose 1.8 percent, the first and largest increase since 2014. In another report, the U.S. central bank said the economy continued to expand from late November through the end of 2017. In its Beige Book report of anecdotal information on business activity collected from contacts nationwide, the Fed said “the outlook for 2018 remains optimistic for a majority of contacts across the country.” The reports were seen supportive of an interest rate increase in March from the Fed. SINGAPORE - The euro nursed losses on Thursday, having retreated from a three-year high after comments from European Central Bank officials this week hinted at concerns over the currency’s recent strength. The euro’s pull-back from highs helped stabilise the greenback, which has come under pressure as central banks of other major economies begin to move toward tighter monetary policy amid a more synchronised global recovery. The euro last stood at $1.2194, up 0.1 percent on the day but well below a peak of $1.2323 set on Wednesday, the euro’s strongest level since December 2014. ECB policymakers may have been caught off guard by the speed of the euro’s appreciation, said Lee Jin Yang, macro research analyst for Aberdeen Standard Investments in Singapore. “Maybe they are trying to manage volatility or slow down the rise,” Lee said. The common currency had slipped on Wednesday as ECB policymaker Ewald Nowotny told reporters the euro’s recent strength against the dollar is “not helpful,” which encouraged a bout of profit-taking before a policy meeting next week. In an interview with an Italian newspaper Vitor Constancio, the ECB vice president, said he did not rule out that monetary policy would still continue to be “very accommodating for a long time”. There could be some profit-taking and consolidation in the euro ahead of the ECB’s policy meeting next week, although the currency’s outlook over 2018 looks positive, said Roy Teo, investment strategist for LGT Bank in Singapore. “We see upside risk towards $1.30 by the end of this year... Later on Thursday, investors will turn their focus to China’s fourth-quarter and 2017 gross domestic product data, and data on December factory output, retail sales and fixed-asset investment. The surge in industrial production pushed up capacity utilization, a measure of how fully industries are deploying their resources, to 77.9 percent. That was the highest since February 2015 and followed a 77.2 percent rate in November. Capacity utilization is 2 percentage points below its long-run average. In addition to four pieces of gender instruments, it will use other instruments such as a pair of drum, kempur and so on. The gamelan composition played when the performance of puppet shadow begins with tabuh petegak like the Sekar Sungsang and selendro scales. After that, the gamelan composition played is Tabuh Pamungkah used when commencing to play the klayon to finish of the klayon. Then, it is resumed with paguneman where the puppet is stabbed accompanied by gamelan composition entitled Tulang Lindung. After stabbing the puppets, it is continued with gamelan entitled Panyacah Parwa in the form of alas arum. When the puppet is told to walk or move, it will use angkat-angkatan gamelan music. Moreover, when the puppet is crying it uses special mesem gamelan composition for slant-eyed puppets. For the puppet with glowering eyes, it will use rebong gamelan music and during wartime it will use bebatelan. “Thus, in once staging from the beginning to finish, it will use approximately 10 gamelan compositions with an average duration of two minutes except for the Tabuh Petegak whose duration is approximately 15 minutes,” he said. In ngaben or cremation ceremony, though the carrying of bade tower has been accompanied by baleganjur gamelan music, it will also use the puppet gender. MANGUPURA - Since the eruption of Mount Agung, tourism players, including car rental businesses have been hit hard. For the last few months there has been a drastic decrease in the number of tourists visiting Bali which means there are less tourists renting cars. With the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Annual Meeting set to take place in Bali next October, car rental businesses are starting to have high hopes that their income will be boosted as delegates from some 189 countries will be attending the big event. Chairman of Bali Car Rental Organization (Asperda), P. Budy Hartono, said that this event is good news for the tourism sector in general and the transportation sector in particular. The IMF Annual meeting will require some 1,100

cars including large and fancier vehicles and as well as regular cars. The number of cars that will be needed was made known during a recent coordination meeting with Angkasa Pura (AP I). “This number includes the car

needs for all the guests including heads of government, ministers and their staff. Up to a month before such events some delegates such as economic advisors will already be here”, said Hartono in Tuban on Tuesday (Jan. 16).

Hartono aded that Angkasa Pura also plans to prepare an additional 1,000 car capacity parking lot to welcome the event. Other preparations such s the construction of an intersection at the Ngurah Rai monument have already started. “We have high hopes for the IMF Annual Meeting in Bali that will run from October 1419. If there are no drastic changes in the conditions in Bali by March, then the final decision to hold the event here will be confirmed”, he said. Currently, members of the car

rental association have a total of 1,000 vehicles. To meet the needs of big events in Bali, they will be assisted by car rental companies from places outside Bali like Surabaya, Jakarta, Malang, Semarang and other regions. Management of Penglipuran improves public facilities BANGLI - The management of Penglipuran Tourism Village, is continuing to make improvements to a number of facilities in Penglipuran village in order that the attractions become more beautiful and to provide increased comfort to visitors. Operations Manager of Penglipuran Tourism Village, I Nengah Moneng, revealed on Tuesday (Jan. 16) that a number of public facilities in Penglipuran have become damaged. The main road for example has been damaged from the large number of vehicles passing through. The toilets in the village also need to be worked on. There are still not enough toilets and many of the existing ones are

currently out of order. “We are planning to make these improvements and repairs this year. Some of the toilets have already started to be repaired. We want to improve these facilities so that tourists feel comfortable when they visit Penglipuran Village. We also want to provide good service so that visitors are satisfied with their visit”, added Moneng. There are also plans to install CCTVs at certain points in the village so that the security of visitors can be monitored directly. During the Penglipuran Village Festival for example, there was a traffic jam at hero monument but the management of the village could not moni-

WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump on Wednesday aligned himself solidly with conservative Republicans on immigration, criticizing a proposed bipartisan deal as “horrible” on U.S. border security and “very, very weak” on reforms for the legal immigration system. The Senate proposal - aimed at addressing Democrats’ demands for protections for young adults brought to the United States illegally as children and dubbed “Dreamers” - fell far short of what most Republicans believe needs to happen, the president said. “It’s the opposite of what I campaigned for,” Trump told Reuters in an interview. The plan was presented to Trump last week by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and Democratic Senator Dick Durbin. Trump drew international condemnation after reports emerged that he had questioned the value of taking immigrants from Africa and the Caribbean nation of Haiti during a closed-door meeting with lawmakers at the White House last Thursday, referring to them as “shithole” countries. Trump has denied using that word. Trump in the interview on Wednesday declined to say what specific words he used. “I’m not going to get into what I said, but I will tell you, it was a tough meeting,” Trump said. Many Democrats have said they will not vote for spending legislation to keep the federal government funded past a Friday deadline without an immigration deal, and Republicans will need at least some Democratic votes to pass the funding extension in the Senate. Trump said he thinks a deal on immigration is still possible. “Time is running out,” he said. Democrats said the negotiated plan addressed Trump priorities, including $2.7 billion for additional border security funding. “The president can’t seem to take yes for an answer and is heading towards a shut down, which would fall squarely on his back,” Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said in a statement emailed to Reuters.

Trump said a federal government shutdown “could happen” at the end of the week, insisting Democrats would be blamed if that occurs even though Republicans control both chambers of Congress and the White House. WASHINGTON - Do not expect U.S. President Donald Trump to hit the gym, despite his doctor’s orders. He gets plenty of exercise on the golf course and at the White House complex, the president told Reuters on Wednesday. “I get exercise. I mean I walk, I this, I that,” Trump, 71, said during an Oval Office interview. “I run over to a building next door. I get more exercise than people think.” Dr. Ronny Jackson, the White House physician, said on Tuesday that Trump was in excellent health overall but needed to lose weight, eat better, and break a sweat more often. The fast-food-loving Trump praised Jackson, who has served as a physician to previous presidents, but seemed wary of taking the not-so-subtle suggestion to use the White House’s exercise facilities. “A lot of people go to the gym and they’ll work out for two hours and all. I’ve seen people ... then they get their new knees when they’re 55 years old and they get their new hips and they do all those things. I don’t have those problems,” Trump said. He did say he was open to changing his diet, perhaps with smaller portion sizes on White House meals. Trump’s predecessors, Democrat Barack Obama and Republican George W. Bush, were fitness enthusiasts, but Trump has no daily workout routine. He gets exercise by playing golf, he said, even though he typically rides around the course in a golf cart. PLN’s lowers electricity consumption growth rate target for 2018

DENPASAR - The growth rate of the consumption of electricity on Bali between 2014- 2016 is recorded to have been 8-9 percent. In 2016 the growth reached 11 percent. According to the Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL) for 2017-2026, the average electricity consumption growth rate is targeted at 8.5 percent. However, in 2017 an anomaly occurred in that electricity consumption decreased. For the first time ever, the growth rate of electricity consumption in Bali was down 0.05 percent. PLN Bali Distribution is therefore taking this into consideration and setting the targeted growth rate for the consumption of electricity in Bali in 2018 at just 6.5 percent. General Manager of PLN Bali Distribution, I Nyoman Suwarjoni Astawa, said that the consumption of electricity in 2017 went down due to Balinese feeling frugal in light of the volcanic activity of Mount Agung that affected many people’s income. FLORENCE - It’s all a matter of taste. Luxury labels are accustomed to tempting fashionistas, and now they’re stretching from haute couture to haute cuisine. Gucci opened a 50-seat restaurant, Gucci Osteria, in Florence on Tuesday where three-Michelin-star chef Massimo Bottura will serve up high-end dishes. The Italian fashion house, owned by Kering, is not the only luxury company to foray into food; LVMH announced late last year it would open a second branch of its gourmet grocer La Grande Epicerie in Paris, days before Tiffany’s & Co opened its Blue Box Cafe in New York. “The big brands are following where their high-spending clients’ cash is going,” said Fabrizio Pini, professor and joint director of the International Master in Luxury Management of Milan’s MIP Politecnico business school. Gucci and its rivals do not expect these investments to yield significant financial returns, for now, but they are seen as a way of enhancing their global brands. City of Denpasar encourages urban farming

DENPASAR - The Municipality of Denpasar is always open to innovations in urban development. For instance, Mahasaraswati University and the Tukad Bindu Foundation have taken the initiative to encourage urban farming in the City of Denpasar. The Tukad Bindu Foundation has not only cleaned up the Tukad Bindu river shores and provided access to recreation and other activities, but they are also creative innovative opportunities for education. When asked to comment, Subdivision Head of Information and Public Relations, Regional Secretariat of Denpasar, I Wayan Hendaryana, said that Denpasar’s municipal government is very supportive and encouraging of the private sector and other stakeholders in developing innovative forms of agriculture in the City of Denpasar. Because this urban landscape has a limited amount of green space, creativity and technology are needed to allow for agriculture and urban farming in this part of Bali. “The Government of Denpasar certainly considers such innovations to be very helpful, whether they are initiated by the private sector or other stakeholders. So, we certainly encourage people to develop means food security by utilizing the land in their yards to its fullest potential”, said Hendrayana. Prof. Yudariani from Mahasaraswati University’s Faculty of Agriculture said that they are cooperating with the Tukad Bindu Foundation and the Municipality of Denpasar municipality to develop urban farming. Their commitment was made official though a Letter of Acceptance (LoA) signed by all the stakeholders involved. “We have all signed the LoA related to the utilization of some of the land next to Tukad Bindu River which will be used as a field laboratory by our Faculty

of Agriculture”, explained Yudariani. She further, that urban farming involves adapting conventional agricultural techniques to the urban setting and explained that the main difference between the two types of farming is the purpose. “Conventional agriculture is oriented towards production while urban farming is more oriented towards the needs of urban people”, she said. The urban farming activities being carried out every Sunday on the area of ??200 square meters is expected to provide a challenge for the students and the surrounding communities with regards to yielding maximum benefits from a small area of land. So far the plan is to run the program for three years. The first year will focus on dividing up the river banks for specific crops. The following year will be focused on continuing the implementation of the program and consolidation. The third year is aimed at empowering the community that lives around Tukad Bindu River. “In addition to serving as a place for recreation, Tukad Bindu River can also serve to educate the public – particularly in the filed of agriculture. The facilities at Tukad Bindu include fitness machines for kids, local food stalls, rest areas to enjoy the scenery, as well as aerobics for nearby residents and other activities as well. Post-eruption impact, Small businesses start to revive gradually

AMLAPURA - The activities of Mount Agung since last September have caused economic turmoil until these days. Many small businesses eventually went bankrupt. In the meantime, some others remain to survive. After entering 2018, a number of small businesses are reviving.

This also happens to a small barbershop business in the town of Amlapura pursued by Wayan Supradnya aka Ranyok. When the first warning alert status was announced last September 22, Ranyok admitted to shock. For three days, his business did not get any visitor coming to use his services. Many of his customers have evacuated, but he did not because his residence is not included in disaster-prone areas. He had been maddening for months because the business pioneered in 2007 was almost totally dead. He admitted to be once pessimistic as his small business was going to end. However, on entering 2018, he gained optimism that his small business can revive again, after the one by one of his customers came back. This is in line with the people of Karangasem, especially the town of Amlapura getting used to seeing the eruption of Mount Agung. Precisely, when Mount Agung erupts, people are no longer busy evacuating. However, they will be busy taking handphone to immortalize the moments of phreatic eruptions. “Now, though the status of Mount Agung remains in warning, my business is not affected,” said Ranyok, when met amid his activities on Wednesday (Jan. 17). In 2007, Ranyok with the help of his wife was desperate to contract a small room for his barbershop

business named ‘Wajah Baru’ (New Face) around Kerti Celuk Negara hamlet on Jalan Teuku Umar, Amlapura. Now, he has been successful enough to run the small business for years. So, it can support his wife and two children. Within a day, dozens of customers come. He has many loyal customers consisting of young people, adults, elders and even officials. Various models of young hairstyles he has mastered. Moreover, he often received calls to provide home service for sick customers. The advantages compared to other barbershops, Ranyok have skills of massage services. After shaving, customers will get massage service on their shoulders to feel more refreshed. Moreover, since pioneering in 2007, dozens of former employees have opened their own business. GIANYAR - Dozens of inmates at Gianyar Detention House are now starting to productively make keben (sealed basket) crafts. The orders for handicrafts made from newspaper waste are also quite high. Infrequently, the inmates are overwhelmed to meet the orders. Naturally, in addition to having strong quality, this craft also looks interesting as embellished with ornament in the form of fruits or barong mask. Head of Gianyar Detention House, Made Astra, said the keben is made from newspaper waste. At first glance, it looks like a bamboo material, but when observed more thoroughly, this craft is made from twisted newspaper waste. “This keben is made by the inmate from colored newspaper waste of one issue,” he said when met on Wednesday (Jan. 17). He explained that making the keben craft looks easy but actually difficult. Initially, a newspaper page is cut into four parts. After that, each part is twisted to resemble a stick. “The twist is then strung together and pasted with glue. Next, make the base first to be followed by the circle,”

Nusa Penida still hampered by some problems SEMARAPURA - Tourism development in Nusa Penida, Klungkung district is growing rapidly. However, behind it a myriad of problems are still complicated, such as environmental damage and rampant illegal tourist transport. On that account, Commission I of the Klungkung House of Representatives urged the district government to immediately resolve them. This was revealed in a joint working meeting of the Food Security and Fishery Agency, Transportation Agency and Integrated Licensing and Investment Office (P2TSP) on Wednesday (Jan. 17). At a meeting attended by the Chairman of the Klungkung House of Representatives, I Wayan Baru, a member of Commission I, I Gede Jana, it was stated that according to the result of observation, the coral reef damage in the waters of Nusa Penida remains quite rampant. The effort to rehabilitate and anticipate further damage by Bali provincial government as the owner of the management authority is considered not to run maximally. If referring to Law No.32/2009 on Environmental Protection and Management, Article 82 paragraph 1 declares that Minister, Governor or Regent / Mayor has the authority to force the persons in charge of the business and or the activity to conduct environmental restoration due to pollution and or destruction of the environment they have done. “We encourage this can be applied by district government as a weapon to resolve it (damage—Ed). Hong Kong star Eric Tsang denies sexual assault allegations

HONG KONG - Hong Kong celebrity Eric Tsang denied allegations of sexual misconduct on Wednesday and said he was taking legal action against one of his two accusers. Tsang, a household name in Hong Kong, China, Taiwan and Chinese-speaking communities around the world, is one of the most high-profile Asian stars to face such accusations amid a global campaign against sexual harassment and assault. Speaking at a news conference, Tsang denied any wrongdoing after being accused in widely circulated online reports of raping a Hong Kong actress in Singapore in the 1990s. “Recently, there are some untrue reports on the Internet about myself. Those reports carry very serious accusations towards me,” said Tsang. “They have affected my reputation, and sadly, they have hurt my supporting friends, my beloved family, my children ... I feel that there is a need for me to now step up and to make a public response.” Tsang, an actor, comedian, director and producer, described the rape allegation as “totally made-up”.

“I am willing to cooperate with any investigation,” he said. North, South Korea to march together under one flag at Winter Olympics

SEOUL - The two Koreas will field a combined women’s ice hockey team and march together under one flag at next month’s Winter Olympics in the South, Seoul said on Wednesday, after a new round of talks amid a thaw in cross-border ties. North and South Korea have been talking since last week - for the first time in more than two years - about the Olympics, offering a respite from a months-long standoff over Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile programmes, although Japan urged caution over the North’s “charm offensive”. The two Koreas will compete as a unified team in the Olympics for the first time, though they have joined forces at other international sports events before. North Korea will send a delegation of more than 400, including 230 cheerleaders, 140 artists and 30 Taekwondo players for a demonstration, a joint press statement released by Seoul’s Unification Ministry said, adding the precise number of athletes will be hammered out after discussions with the IOC scheduled for later

this week. Prior to the Games, the sides will carry out joint training for skiers at the North’s Masik Pass resort and a cultural event at the Mount Kumgang resort, for which Seoul officials plan to visit the sites next week. “Under the circumstances where inter-Korean (relations) are extremely strained, in fact just some 20 days ago we weren’t expecting North Korea would participate in the Olympics”, said Chun Haesung, the South’s chief negotiator

and vice unification minister. “It would have a significant meaning if the South and North show reconciliation and unity, for example through a joint march”. The North Korean delegation will begin arriving in South Korea on Jan. 25, according to the joint statement.
