Preventative measures for yearend inflation Especially in air transport

DENPASAR - The Bali Representative Office of the Bank of Indonesia has already started to think about the inflation that is likely to occur at the end of this year and the start of next year. According to statistics, November, December and January tend to see inflation of 0.29 percent to 1 percent in Bali with air transport being the biggest contributing factor. Therefore, on Wednesday (Nov. 16), the Bali Representative Office of the Bank of Indonesia organized a high-level meeting with the regional inflation control team (TPID) for the Province of Bali and invited airlines, the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI), Association of Indonesia Tour and Travel Agency (ASITA) as well as the Aaaociated Press to discuss the matter. Chief of the Bali Representative Office of the Bank of Indonesia, Causa Iman Karana, said the meeting aimed to help stabilize prices at this special time of year. “We’ve mapped inflation-contributing commodities and this data has been distributed to each agency”, he said.

Europe at risk of collapse; France, Germany must lead - French PM

BERLIN - The European Union is in danger of breaking apart unless France and Germany, in particular, work harder to stimulate growth and employment and heed citizens’ concerns, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said in the German capital on Thursday.

Valls said the two countries, for decades the axis around which the EU revolved, had to help refocus the bloc to tackle an immigration crisis, a lack of solidarity between member states, Britain’s looming exit, and terrorism. “Europe is in danger of falling apart,” Valls said at an event organised by the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper. “So Germany and France have a huge responsibility.” He said France must continue to open up its economy, not least by cutting corporate taxation, while Germany and the EU as a whole must increase investment that would stimulate growth and job creation, as well as boosting defence. As Britain seeks to negotiate its post-Brexit relationship with the EU, hoping to restrict immigration from the EU while maintaining as

much access as possible to the EU single market, Valls said it must be prevented from cherry-picking. “If they are able to have all the advantages of Europe without the inconveniences, then we are opening a window for others to leave the European Union,” Valls said. Immigration was one of the main drivers of Britons’ vote to leave the EU, and Valls said the bloc, which more than a million migrants entered last year, had to regain control of its borders. Roma designer hopes fashion can build bridges in Hungarian society

BUDAPEST - Transforming traditional flowery Roma patterns into bold, modern prints, designer Erika Varga aims to use fashion to increase acceptance of the Roma minority in Hungarian society. She launched Romani Design, Hungary’s first Roma fashion label, with her younger sister Helena Varga six years ago. Since then her colourful, sometimes flamboyant, designs have won fans in Hungary, as well as in Brussels, Berlin, Paris and India, where she has also presented her women’s and menswear collections. Inspired by the traditional clothing of her rich Roma cultural heritage Varga, 46, hopes fashion can fight stereotyping in society. Born in eastern Hungary, she was a jewellery maker before turning to clothes. She also worked for several years as a mentor to young Roma people - an experience that she says has had a profound influence on her mission now as a fashion designer. “We talked a lot about how important it is to find and live fully their Roma identity,” she said of her mentoring work. To succeed in this, she said, society needs to change as well, to be more open towards Roma people, who make up about 5 percent of Hungary’s population. “The reason why Romani Design was created is that I wanted a much more intensive and stronger communication channel and ... to boost the prestige of Roma culture,” Varga told Reuters in the small sewing room in her studio in Budapest. At a glitzy fashion show in the capital featuring Hungarian designers over the weekend, held by Marie Claire magazine, models strolled the catwalk in Varga’s vibrant Romani designs. “The fact that Roma designs have now integrated into the international fashion world is a huge experience for the Roma community,” said Lorena Dogi, 38, a Roma activist from Romania. In the audience, Hajnalka Bessenyei, 37, loves Varga’s designs, and the message they send, and wore a pair of the designer’s black trousers with a red flowery waistline as she attended the show with a friend. The social “mission” behind the designs give the clothes a special value, she said. “I think the more people wear (these clothes), the more visibility Roma culture gets ... and this can improve relations between the Roma and non-Roma communities,” Bessenyei said. Excavator cleans up mud in Lake Buyan

SINGARAJA - Cleanup of mud covering the area of Lake Buyan at Pancasari village, Sukasada, has begun to be carried out by using excavator. Surface at the periphery of the lake covered in mud, weeds and water hyacinth is slowly cleaned up. It is meant that Lake Buyan will easily flow during rainy season and is not clogged by mud.

According to the Head of the Buleleng Environment Agency (BLH), Nyoman Surya Temaja, Lake Buyan poses the source of water for Buleleng and surrounding communities. Lake Buyan should be maintained such as by gradually dredging the sedimentation as the lake’s surface covered in mud by means of heavy equipment of the Bali-Penida River Agency (BWS). “To dredge mud, BWS does not need our permission because it has the authority in the maintenance of the lake,” said Temaja. During the passage, the maintenance of the lake becomes the responsibility of the central government because Lake Buyan belongs to the national tourism strategic area (KSPN). Two ministries have the authority to do it namely the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) through the natural resources conservation agency (BKSDA) and the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (KPUPR). Of the several parties involved in maintaining the lake Buyan, a number of institutions are currently cooperating facilitated by the center for development and control of eco-region (P2E) Bali. “We are still drafting it. Thus, we will know about the details of the measures of cooperation taken. Moreover, territorially the Lake Buyan lies in Buleleng. The government of Buleleng has regularly done clean up at Lake Buyan,” he said. Function of Lake Buyan water is very important to the community. On that account, the sedimentation in Lake Buyan needs to be cleaned up from mud and even weeds growing wild quickly. Lake water is hazardous to be consumed as having been contaminated by waste and harmful substances of agriculture around the lake. “Quality of lake water remains not to meet the standards. In addition, farmers still use many chemicals that have an impact on non-eco-friendly farming systems. We’ve often educated farmers to use organic fertilizers,” he said. (kmb34)

Though having been dormant for several years, in 2010 the Pinge tourism village was then revived. Nowadays, the visit to this village is dominated by European travelers. Despite running, some drawbacks must still be repaired. One of them is the need for standardization of the homestay at Pinge village. The Head of the Tabanan Tour-

ism Agency, Wayan Adnyana, said on Tuesday (Nov. 15) that homestay at Pinge tourism village must be standardized so that the quality is the same. The standard to be equated is the bathroom remaining to use a squat toilet. To that end, the government of Tabanan made cooperation with the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) some time ago. One of the cooperation involving five state-owned enterprises is the provision of a soft

loan for homestay owners. “With this soft loan, they can make improvement or add the appropriate standardization to their homestay facilities,” said Adnyana. In the meantime, Chief of Pinge customary village, I Made Denayasa, explained that ten of 160 households of Pinge have a homestay with a total of 40 rooms. He admitted that some rooms of the homestay do not comply with the standards such as in terms of bath-

room facilities remaining to use squat toilet. Through the soft loans from the Ministry of SOEs, it is expected to not only improve the existing home stay facilities but also increase the number of homestay at Pinge village. “Of course, we hope the homestay will grow in number,” he said. per night per person. Based on the data in 2014, the tourist arrival was recorded to reach 867 people where 115 people stayed overnight and 752 others came and went. In 2015, total tourist arrival reached 856 people where 354 people stayed overnight and 502 people came and went. Stealing a surfboard, a Russian tourist arrested MANGUPURA - More and more foreigners are getting involved in crimes in Bali, from theft to murder. On Monday (Nov. 7), a Russian traveler with the initials OB, 22, was arrested for stealing a surfboard at Rip Curl Shop at Kuta Square Complex, Kuta. The case is being processed at Kuta Police station.

Chief of Kuta Police, Wayan Sumara, said on Wednesday (Nov.16) that at the time of the incident precisely at 19:00 the suspect and his friend arrived at the scene. On arrival, the suspect waited outside the shop, while his friend came into the shop selling surf gears. “The suspect was standing in front of the surf board

on display. He looked around the board,” he affirmed. After a few minutes, the suspect quietly took a surf board and then carried away the board to parking space of his motorcycle. Unfortunately, his action was seen by shop attendant in front of the scene. The attendant immediately notified the other attendant of Rip Curl. The

Vietnam, neighbours told to close illegal wildlife markets

BANGLI - Lately, residents of the district of Bangli have been diligent in exploring ways of developing the potential for tourism in their respective villages. Guliang Kawan hamlet in Bunutin for example has created a toursim awareness group (Pokdarwis) that is in the process of turning a hill -that was formely used to quarry batik sandstone, into a nature attraction called Selfie Twin Hills. Acting headman of Bunutin, I Nengah Muja, when met at his office on Wednesday (Nov. 16) revelaed that Selfie Twin Hills are located on the border of Bangli and Gianyar on what was foremely an umkempt patch of hill. For the last few months this hill located next to Bukit Jati has been transformed into a tourist attraction, by some diligent villagers. Staris have been created to reacht the top of the hill and a wooden platfrom and seating area have been set up so that people can enjoy the view in a leasurely manner. “The construction of the stairs and seats was funded through donations made to the Pokdarwis” explained Muja. Selfie Twin Hills offers a beautiful and natural scenery. From the top of selfie hills, visitors can see the view of majestic mountains and other neighboring districts. Muja said that since the hill has been arraged, both local and foreign visitors have stopped by to enjoy the location. Muja added that Guliang Kawan hamlet’S Pokdarwis has submitted a proposal to the government of Bangli so that the quality of this location can be further improved. “We have already submitted a grant proposal including the ratification of the Pokdarwis’ decree,” he said. All this time, maintenance of the deer is entrusted to Wanasari farmer group at Pursana Wanasari with the tasks of feeding them with grass for the Timorese deer.. Rehabilitation Section Head of the Karangasem Forestry and Plantation Agency, I Made Ganya, said that his agency in Karangasem has provided compensation fund for the purchase of feed and water amounting to 7-12 tanks per year. Russia starts blocking LinkedIn website after court ruling

MOSCOW - Russia’s communications regulator ordered public access to LinkedIn’s website to be blocked on Thursday to comply with a court ruling that found the social networking firm guilty of violating data storage laws. LinkedIn, headquartered in the United States, is the first major social network to be blocked by Russian authorities, setting a precedent for the way foreign Internet firms operate. It has over 6 million registered users in Russia. Russian law requires websites that store the personal data of Russian citizens to do so on Russian servers, something communications regulator Roskomnadzor said LinkedIn had not done. LinkedIn’s site will be blocked within 24 hours, the Interfax news agency cited Roskomnadzor

HANOI - Vietnam and neighbouring countries should shut down illegal wildlife markets and step up their fight against the trafficking of rhino horn, ivory and tiger parts, international conservationists said on Thursday. The call was made during a conference on illegal wildlife trade hosted by Hanoi, with Britain’s Prince William, President of United for Wildlife, and representatives from over 50 countries among the attendants. Last Saturday Vietnam destroyed nearly 2.2 tonnes of seized elephant ivory and 70 kg of rhino horns from 23 rhinos and about 330 African elephants, in one of its strongest moves yet to stop illegal wildlife trafficking. “Your first ever destruction of illegally traded ivory and rhino horn at the weekend provides a powerful example ahead of this conference, and we look forward to hearing about the further actions you plan to take,” Prince William told the Hanoi conference. Countries in the Greater Mekong region including Vietnam have failed to close their illegal wildlife markets, while Hanoi has also made little effort to target major traders and smugglers of illicit wildlife products, WWF and Traffic said in a joint statement. “Vietnam can no longer turn a blind eye to wildlife crime because the world is watching: the government must use this conference to signal a new start by announcing concrete plans to end the rhino horn and ivory trade and close all tiger farms,” WWF Vietnam Country Director Thinh Van Ngoc said. He urged Vietnam to launch a concerted campaign against wildlife crime, saying Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand should follow suit. The country is a transit point for elephant ivory for consumers in mostly China and the United States to make jewellery and home decorations, while it is a major consumer of rhino horn. The usage and trading of rhino horn is a criminal offence in Vietnam, but demand is strong due to a long-held belief in rhino horn’s medical power as an elixir. “We expect that Vietnam will demonstrate its commitment in coming years to really clamp down on the trade, transit and source of wildlife,” Jorge Eduardo Rios, a manager at the U.N. JAKARTA - An Indonesian court sentenced an American to life in prison on Wednesday for smuggling a large quantity of crystal meth into the country from China, state news agency Antara reported. The district court in the port city of Semarang, the provincial capital of Central Java, found Kamran Malik guilty of smuggling 97 kilograms of the drug inside generator sets being imported from China, Antara said. Malik, who is also known as Phillip Russel, was arrested in January with seven others involved in a smuggling ring that Judge Noor Ali described as “a Pakistani network”. The judge said Malik dealt with the finances. On Monday, the same court sentenced to death the Pakistani ringleader, Muhammad Riaz, Antara reported. Another Pakistani in the group, Faiq Akhtar, was sentenced to life on Tuesday, local media reported, while five others, all Indonesians, received lighter sentences.(rtr)

It is larger than a grapefruit and has a green skin and a thick whitish membrane, which is peeled or cut off to expose segments of pink or yellowish pulp. Italy’s Renzi rules out government role if he loses referendum

ROME - Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said on Thursday he would not take any part in efforts to form a temporary or technocratic government if he loses next month’s referendum on constitutional reform. Renzi has promised to resign if he loses the vote, and with the majority of polls pointing to that outcome, attention has focused on what may happen after the Dec. 4 ballot. Many observers expect a temporary government to be formed, charged with drafting a new electoral system, or a so-called “technical” government of experts without party affiliation. Renzi said the electoral law would have to be changed whatever the outcome of the referendum, but indicated he would not be the person to re-write the legislation if his flagship constitutional reform is rejected. “I can’t be someone who negotiates a deal with the other parties to create a little government or one with a limited goal (to change the electoral system),” he told radio station RTL. “I’m not willing to take part in old-style political games. Either we

change or I have no role to play,” he said. The constitutional reform proposes drastically curbing the role of the upper house Senate, a move that Renzi says will simplify decision-making and ensure stable government. Opponents say it will make the legislative process more complicated and reduce democratic checks and balances. The current electoral law, which Renzi pushed through parliament in 2015, introduces a two-round voting system and offers the winner a handsome majority in the lower house. However, the law does not cover the Senate and Italy risks political paralysis if it went to elections with different systems governing the vote in the two chambers. Mainstream parties on both the left and right worry that the reform could help the anti-system 5-Star Movement, which all recent polls have said would win power under a two-round voting system. McGregor called Mayweather “afraid” and demanded $100 million for a showdown between the two during an appearance in a New York nightclub on Tuesday. “As far as real fighting -- true,

pure unarmed combat -- Floyd don’t want none of this,” McGregor said, in a video published by TMZ. “I want the $100 million cash to fight him in boxing rules because he’s afraid of a real fight.” Talk of a possible fight between the two headliners of their sport picked up steam in the spring with both stoking the idea. Milan revival, Pioli debut put derby back in spotlight

Unbeaten Real set for Madrid derby against Atletico MADRID — The last Spanish league derby against Atletico Madrid marked a turning point for Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid. The disappointing home defeat in February was the last time Madrid lost a game in the league. It rebounded from that 1-0 defeat at the Santiago Bernabeu by going on a streak that culminated with the club lifting the Champions League trophy — in a final against Atletico — and contending for the league title until the very end. Madrid won 12 straight after the loss, erasing 11 points off Barcelona’s lead and finishing only one point from the title. This time, Madrid is just looking to keep its momentum when it plays city rival Atletico on Saturday. Madrid arrives at the derby in a much better position than previously, holding a two-point lead over Barcelona and a six-point advantage over Diego Simeone’s Atletico, which needs the victory to avoid losing more ground to the rivals. Atletico led the league until losing two of its last three games to drop to fourth in the standings. Atletico has won four league games in a row at the Vicente Calderon stadium, but it will be facing a Madrid team that has thrived away from the Bernabeu, having scored 20 goals in its last four away games in all competitions. Madrid isn’t getting over-confident, however. “The next game will be a tricky one, like they always are against Atletico,” Real Madrid defender Nacho Fernandez said. Madrid’s only loss since the league game against Atletico last season was at Wolfsburg in the Champions League in April. It remains unbeaten since then, with 21 wins and seven draws in all competitions. It has won four straight in the league and is the only team in the top tier not to have lost this season. Succeeding at the Calderon may be especially difficult this time as Zidane has been dealing with injuries to some of the team’s top forwards. SAN JOSE — Looking a bit shocked, Jurgen Klinsmann called it a “bitter moment” four times in 14 minutes and also a “bitter pill to swallow” during his post-match news conference. He described the 4-0 wipeout in a World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica as “the defeat that hurts most” during his five-year tenure as U.S. coach. Time for a new leader? Outside the room, U.S. Soccer Federation President Sunil Gulati expressed patience. “We don’t make any decisions right after games,” Gulati said. “We’ll think about what happened today and talk with Jurgen and look at the situation.” The U.S. is 0-2 in the final round of World Cup qualifying for the first time following a 2-1 home loss to Mexico last week and its ninth straight defeat in a qualifier at Costa Rica. The seven-times European champions appear to have finally come good on a promise they made years ago to use locally-raised players more,

Italy’s Renzi rules out government role if he loses referendum

ROME - Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said on Thursday he would not take any part in efforts to form a temporary or technocratic government if he loses next month’s referendum on constitutional reform. Renzi has promised to resign if he loses the vote, and with the majority of polls pointing to that outcome, attention has focused on what may happen after the Dec. 4 ballot. Many observers expect a temporary government to be formed, charged with drafting a new electoral system, or a so-called “technical” government of experts without party affiliation. Renzi said the electoral law would have to be changed whatever the outcome of the referendum, but indicated he would not be the person to re-write the legislation if his flagship constitutional reform is rejected. “I can’t be someone who negotiates a deal with the other parties to create a little government or one with a limited goal (to change the electoral system),” he told radio station RTL. “I’m not willing to take part in old-style political games. Either we

change or I have no role to play,” he said. The constitutional reform proposes drastically curbing the role of the upper house Senate, a move that Renzi says will simplify decision-making and ensure stable government. Opponents say it will make the legislative process more complicated and reduce democratic checks and balances. The current electoral law, which Renzi pushed through parliament in 2015, introduces a two-round voting system and offers the winner a handsome majority in the lower house. However, the law does not cover the Senate and Italy risks political paralysis if it went to elections with different systems governing the vote in the two chambers. Mainstream parties on both the left and right worry that the reform could help the anti-system 5-Star Movement, which all recent polls have said would win power under a two-round voting system. Royal Mail shares fell by 2.6 percent to 486.1 pence at 0812 GMT after it posted a 5 percent fall in first-half profit and said it aims to cut annual costs by 600 million pounds per year to March 2018, up from a 500 million target. The group is cutting costs and modernising its operations to gain a larger share of the parcels market as British households and businesses send fewer letters in an age of electronic communications and economic uncertainty. It has also been hurt by the loss of some business from Amazon, which recently started its own de-

livery network, while rivals such as UK Mail, which is being bought by Deutsche Post, have added extra capacity. Royal Mail said the costs associated with the transformation of its UK business were now seen at 130 million to 160 million pounds for the year to March 2017, down from a previous forecast of around 160 million. It said the outcome for the full year will be dependent on its trading over the Christmas period, after operating profit before transformation costs fell to 320 million pounds in the half year to Sept. 25. JAKARTA - An Indonesian court sentenced an American to life in prison on Wednesday for smuggling a large quantity of crystal meth into the country from China, state news agency Antara reported. The district court in the port city of Semarang, the provincial capital of Central Java, found Kamran Malik guilty of smuggling 97 kilograms of the drug inside generator sets being imported from China, Antara said. Malik, who is also known as Phillip Russel, was arrested in January with seven others involved in a smuggling ring that Judge Noor Ali described as “a Pakistani network”. The judge said Malik dealt with the finances. On Monday, the same court sentenced to death the Pakistani ringleader, Muhammad Riaz, Antara reported. Another Pakistani in the group, Faiq Akhtar, was sentenced to life on Tuesday, local media reported, while five others, all Indonesians, received lighter sentences.(rtr)

Guliang Kawan hamlet in Bunutin for example has created a toursim awareness group (Pokdarwis) that is in the process of turning a hill -that was formely used to quarry batik sandstone, into a nature attraction called Selfie Twin Hills. Acting headman of Bunutin, I Nengah Muja, when met at his office on Wednesday (Nov. 16) revelaed that Selfie Twin Hills are located on the border of Bangli and Gianyar on what was foremely an umkempt patch of hill. For the last few months this hill located next to Bukit Jati has been transformed into a tourist attraction, by some diligent villagers. Staris have been created to reacht the top of the hill and a wooden platfrom and seating area have been set up so that people can enjoy the view in a leasurely manner. “The construction of the stairs and seats was funded through donations made to the Pokdarwis” explained Muja. Selfie Twin Hills offers a beautiful and natural scenery. From the top of selfie hills, visitors can see the view of majestic mountains and other neighboring districts. Muja said that since the hill has been arraged, both local and foreign visitors have stopped by to enjoy the location. Muja added that Guliang Kawan hamlet’S Pokdarwis has submitted a proposal to the government of Bangli so that the quality of this location can be further improved. “We have already submitted a grant proposal including the ratification of the Pokdarwis’ decree,” he said. Russia starts blocking LinkedIn website after court ruling

MOSCOW - Russia’s communications regulator ordered public access to LinkedIn’s website to be blocked on Thursday to comply with a court ruling that found the social networking firm guilty of violating data storage laws. LinkedIn, headquartered in the United States, is the first major social network to be blocked by Russian authorities, setting a precedent for the way foreign Internet firms operate. It has over 6 million registered users in Russia. Russian law requires websites that store the personal data of Russian citizens to do so on Russian servers, something communications regulator Roskomnadzor said LinkedIn had not done. LinkedIn’s site will be blocked within 24 hours, the Interfax news agency cited Roskomnadzor

spokesman Vadim Ampelonsky as saying. One Internet service provider, Rostelcom, said it had already blocked access to the site. Two others, MTS and Vimpelcom, said they would do so within 24 hours. LinkedIn did not immediately respond to a written request for comment, but warned earlier this month that the decision risked denying access to its site for millions of Russian members, including companies, who use it to grow their businesses. HANOI - Vietnam and neighbouring countries should shut down illegal wildlife markets and step up their fight against the trafficking of rhino horn, ivory and tiger parts, international conservationists said on Thursday. The call was made during a conference on illegal wildlife trade hosted by Hanoi, with Britain’s Prince William, President of United for Wildlife, and representatives from over 50 countries among the attendants. Last Saturday Vietnam destroyed nearly 2.2 tonnes of seized elephant ivory and 70 kg of rhino horns from 23 rhinos and about 330 African elephants, in one of its strongest moves yet to stop illegal wildlife trafficking. “Your first ever destruction of illegally traded ivory and rhino horn at the weekend provides a powerful example ahead of this conference, and we look forward to hearing about the further actions you plan to take,” Prince William told the Hanoi conference. Countries in the Greater Mekong region including Vietnam have failed to close their illegal wildlife markets, while Hanoi has also made little effort to target major traders and smugglers of illicit wildlife products, WWF and Traffic said in a joint statement. “Vietnam can no longer turn a blind eye to wildlife crime because the world is watching: the government must use this conference to signal a new start by announcing concrete plans to end the rhino horn and ivory trade and close all tiger farms,” WWF Vietnam Country Director Thinh Van Ngoc said. He urged Vietnam to launch a concerted campaign against wildlife crime, saying Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand should follow suit. The country is a transit point for elephant ivory for consumers in mostly China and the United States to make jewellery and home decorations, while it is a major consumer of rhino horn. The usage and trading of rhino horn is a criminal offence in Vietnam, but demand is strong due to a long-held belief in rhino horn’s medical power as an elixir. “We expect that Vietnam will demonstrate its commitment in coming years to really clamp down on the trade, transit and source of wildlife,” Jorge Eduardo Rios, a manager at the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime told Reuters Television. The conference reviewed progress towards commitments made at previous gatherings to tackle wildlife crime, including action to eradicate markets, strengthening law enforcement efforts and promoting sustainable livelihoods and economic development. Roma designer hopes fashion can build bridges in Hungarian society

BUDAPEST - Transforming traditional flowery Roma patterns into bold, modern prints, designer Erika Varga aims to use fashion to increase acceptance of the Roma minority in Hungarian society. She launched Romani Design, Hungary’s first Roma fashion label, with her younger sister Helena Varga six years ago. Since then her colourful, sometimes flamboyant, designs have won fans in Hungary, as well as in Brussels, Berlin, Paris and India, where she has also presented her women’s and menswear collections. Inspired by the traditional clothing of her rich Roma cultural heritage Varga, 46, hopes fashion can fight stereotyping in society. Born in eastern Hungary, she was a jewellery maker before turning to clothes. She also worked for several years as a mentor to young Roma people - an experience that she says has had a profound influence on her mission now as a fashion designer. “We talked a lot about how important it is to find and live fully their Roma identity,” she said of her mentoring work. To succeed in this, she said, society needs to change as well, to be more open towards Roma people, who make up about 5 percent of Hungary’s population. “The reason why Romani Design was created is that I wanted a much more intensive and stronger communication channel and ... to boost the prestige of Roma culture,” Varga told Reuters in the small sewing room in her studio in Budapest. At a glitzy fashion show in the capital featuring Hungarian designers over the weekend, held by Marie Claire magazine, models strolled the catwalk in Varga’s vibrant Romani designs. “The fact that Roma designs have now integrated into the international fashion world is a huge experience for the Roma community,” said Lorena Dogi, 38, a Roma activist from Romania. In the audience, Hajnalka Bessenyei, 37, loves Varga’s designs, and the message they send, and wore a pair of the designer’s black trousers with a red flowery waistline as she attended the show with a friend. The social “mission” behind the designs give the clothes a special value, she said. “I think the more people wear (these clothes), the more visibility Roma culture gets ... and this can improve relations between the Roma and non-Roma communities,” Bessenyei said. Excavator cleans up mud in Lake Buyan

SINGARAJA - Cleanup of mud covering the area of Lake Buyan at Pancasari village, Sukasada, has begun to be carried out by using excavator. Surface at the periphery of the lake covered in mud, weeds and water hyacinth is slowly cleaned up. It is meant that Lake Buyan will easily flow during rainy season and is not clogged by mud.

According to the Head of the Buleleng Environment Agency (BLH), Nyoman Surya Temaja, Lake Buyan poses the source of water for Buleleng and surrounding communities. Lake Buyan should be maintained such as by gradually dredging the sedimentation as the lake’s surface covered in mud by means of heavy equipment of the Bali-Penida River Agency (BWS). “To dredge mud, BWS does not need our permission because it has the authority in the maintenance of the lake,” said Temaja. During the passage, the maintenance of the lake becomes the responsibility of the central government because Lake Buyan belongs to the national tourism strategic area (KSPN). Two ministries have the authority to do it namely the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) through the natural resources conservation agency (BKSDA) and the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (KPUPR). Of the several parties involved in maintaining the lake Buyan, a number of institutions are currently cooperating facilitated by the center for development and control of eco-region (P2E) Bali. “We are still drafting it. Thus, we will know about the details of the measures of cooperation taken. Moreover, territorially the Lake Buyan lies in Buleleng. The government of Buleleng has regularly done clean up at Lake Buyan,” he said. Function of Lake Buyan water is very important to the community. On that account, the sedimentation in Lake Buyan needs to be cleaned up from mud and even weeds growing wild quickly. Lake water is hazardous to be consumed as having been contaminated by waste and harmful substances of agriculture around the lake. “Quality of lake water remains not to meet the standards. In addition, farmers still use many chemicals that have an impact on non-eco-friendly farming systems. We’ve often educated farmers to use organic fertilizers,” he said. (kmb34)

In 2015, total tourist arrival reached 856 people where 354 people stayed overnight and 502 people came and went. Stealing a surfboard, a Russian tourist arrested MANGUPURA - More and more foreigners are getting involved in crimes in Bali, from theft to murder. On Monday (Nov. 7), a Russian traveler with the initials OB, 22, was arrested for stealing a surfboard at Rip Curl Shop at Kuta Square Complex, Kuta. The case is being processed at Kuta Police station.

Chief of Kuta Police, Wayan Sumara, said on Wednesday (Nov.16) that at the time of the incident precisely at 19:00 the suspect and his friend arrived at the scene. On arrival, the suspect waited outside the shop, while his friend came into the shop selling surf gears. “The suspect was standing in front of the surf board

on display. He looked around the board,” he affirmed. After a few minutes, the suspect quietly took a surf board and then carried away the board to parking space of his motorcycle. Unfortunately, his action was seen by shop attendant in front of the scene. The attendant immediately notified the other attendant of Rip Curl. The

Preventative measures for yearend inflation Especially in air transport

DENPASAR - The Bali Representative Office of the Bank of Indonesia has already started to think about the inflation that is likely to occur at the end of this year and the start of next year. According to statistics, November, December and January tend to see inflation of 0.29 percent to 1 percent in Bali with air transport being the biggest contributing factor. Therefore, on Wednesday (Nov. 16), the Bali Representative Office of the Bank of Indonesia organized a high-level meeting with the regional inflation control team (TPID) for the Province of Bali and invited airlines, the Indonesia Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI), Association of Indonesia Tour and Travel Agency (ASITA) as well as the Aaaociated Press to discuss the matter. Fisher spilled her 40-year secret to People magazine this week while promoting her memoir, “The Princess Diarist,” which goes on sale on Tuesday. Europe at risk of collapse; France, Germany must lead - French PM

BERLIN - The European Union is in danger of breaking apart unless France and Germany, in particular, work harder to stimulate growth and employment and heed citizens’ concerns, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said in the German capital on Thursday.

Valls said the two countries, for decades the axis around which the EU revolved, had to help refocus the bloc to tackle an immigration crisis, a lack of solidarity between member states, Britain’s looming exit, and terrorism. “Europe is in danger of falling apart,” Valls said at an event organised by the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper. “So Germany and France have a huge responsibility.” He said France must continue to open up its economy, not least by cutting corporate taxation, while Germany and the EU as a whole must increase investment that would stimulate growth and job creation, as well as boosting defence. As Britain seeks to negotiate its post-Brexit relationship with the EU, hoping to restrict immigration from the EU while maintaining as

much access as possible to the EU single market, Valls said it must be prevented from cherry-picking. “If they are able to have all the advantages of Europe without the inconveniences, then we are opening a window for others to leave the European Union,” Valls said. Immigration was one of the main drivers of Britons’ vote to leave the EU, and Valls said the bloc, which more than a million migrants entered last year, had to regain control of its borders. He said the Brexit vote and Donald Trump’s election victory showed how important it was to listen to angry citizens, and that politicians scared of making decisions were opening the door to populists and demagogues.
