Paul McCartney scores US No. 1 after nearly four decades

NEW YORK - Paul McCartney is back on the top of the charts, on Sunday earning his first solo number-one album in the United States in 36 years. “Egypt Station” -- a confident 16-track album in which McCartney experiments with a younger rock feel in addition to his classic Beatles sound -- marked the first time that he has ever debuted as a solo artist on top of the benchmark US Billboard chart. The English legend -- who at 76 retains a hectic touring schedule -spared no promotional effort for the album, appearing on US late-night shows and livestreaming an inviteonly concert inside New York’s Grand Central Station. Surprisingly, McCartney did not replicate the feat in his native Britain, where “Egypt Station” debuted at number three, with veteran US rapper Eminem’s surprise

album “Kamikaze” reigning for a second week. “Egypt Station” sold the equivalent of 153,000 copies in the United States in the week since its release on September 7, tracking service Nielsen Music said. Unusually for a chart-topping album in recent years, virtually all of the sales were traditional purchases rather than through streaming or individually downloaded tracks. McCartney, who last topped the chart as a solo artist in 1982 with “Tug of War,” achieved the second largest gap between number-one albums for any artist. Johnny Cash holds the record with a break that was seven months longer than McCartney’s when the country great posthumously hit number one in 2006. Since “Tug of War,” McCartney has also reached number one four times in the United States with Beatles anthologies. (afp)

‘Game of Thrones’ battles with ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ for Emmys glory

LOS ANGELES - Hollywood’s top television stars will strut their stuff on the red carpet Monday at the glittering 70th Emmys Awards -- a duel between record-breaker “Game of Thrones” and last year’s big winner “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

Both shows have already picked up some Emmys hardware: HBO’s blood-spattered smash hit won seven statuettes in technical categories at the Creative Arts Emmys a week ago, while Hulu’s “Handmaid” scooped up three. And both are likely to add to that haul at the Primetime Emmys, television’s answer to the Oscars, at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles. But will “GoT” -- which was ineligible last year -- reclaim the best drama series throne, or will “Handmaid” -- the first streaming series to take the coveted prize -- be a repeat winner?

For Tim Gray, the awards editor and senior vice president of top entertainment news outlet Variety, “Handmaid” -- a bleak portrait of a future dystopian America where women are brutally oppressed -has the edge. “I just feel like ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ is, kind of, of the moment as it addresses a lot of concerns that people have now,” Gray told AFP. “I just think it’s their year.” The show, based on Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel, seems especially timely in the age of #MeToo, a movement that erupted shortly after last year’s Emmys. Others in the best drama race

include dark horse pick “The Americans” -- the gripping FX thriller about Soviet sleeper agents in the United States that has been a favorite of critics and fans, but not the 22,000-plus Emmy voters, for years. HBO’s futuristic western “Westworld,” Netflix favorites “The Crown” and retro sci-fi mystery “Stranger Things,” and NBC family saga “This is Us” round out the field. On the comedy side, FX’s “Atlanta” -- a quirky look at the rap scene in the Georgia capital -- is squaring off with Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs Maisel” for top honors. (afp)

Regarding the effect of IMF-WB

Income for Bali estimated to only reach 15 percent

DENPASAR - Preparations for the very large IMF-WB Annual Meeting that will take place in Bali next month have been underway for some time. Now people are looking and what the short-term and long-term effects of the IMF-WB event will be for Bali. Chairman of the Bali Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) -Bali Chapter, A.A. Ngurah Alit Wiraputra, recently predicted that after the IMF-WB event, there will be pressure on the economy of Bali that will last until 2019. In general, the event will bring many positive impacts for Bali, including direct business from for many local entrepreneurs. Bali’s economy will almost certainly grow between 5.9 and 6.3 percent as a direct result of the international

meeting. “We believe this event can drive economic growth- mainly from consumption, investment and exports (foreign exchange of from tourists”, he said. Local Balinese businesses are supporting the event by providing transportation services, three-star hotels and jasmine hotels for the companions of delegates, food and beverages, printing, logistics, tourist attractions, et cetera. Kadin fully supports the involvement of local entrepreneurs and hopes that

the central government’s national committee will support the IMFWB meeting being of direct benefit to local entrepreneurs. Wiraputra added that local SMEs will be offering their products at the booths in the BNDCC’s Jepun Park. There is also a tour of MSMEs in Badung, Gianyar, Tabanan and elsewhere. Uniforms for staff of the event and souvenirs are also being provided by local MSMEs. Of course there is also the benefit that infrastructure development

such as the new underpass in terms of reducing traffic congestion. The GWK is also expected to attract foreign and domestic tourists. Other projects such as the expansion of the airport aprons, Benoa Harbour, the Suwung landfill and such that have been accelerated to be realized in time for the IMF-WB event also have a positive effect on Bali’s economy. There are however some potentially negative impacts, explained Wiraputra saying that only 15 percent of the funds for the event go to Bali. Since the event is being handled and organized b, equipment rentals, most

of the food and beverages and 60 percent of the vehicles used for the delegates are being brought in from Jakarta. So Balinese people have access to get business opportunity from the delegates through their shopping and tours enjoying the nature of Bali.
