Leonardo DiCaprio named UN Messenger of Peace Associated Press

UNITED NATIONS — Leonardo DiCaprio’s movie roles have made him an international star, but his long and little-known commitment to preserving the global environment has led to his new role — as a U.N. Messenger of Peace.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced on Tuesday that the 39-year-old American actor will join 11 other prominent world figures who advocate on behalf of the U.N. as Messengers of Peace including Stevie Wonder, Michael Douglas, George Clooney, Brazilian author Paulo Coelho, primatologist Jane Goodall and conductor Daniel Barenboim.

Ban told a news conference that the Dicaprio “is not just one of the world’s leading actors” but he has “a longstanding commitment to environmental causes.”

He said DiCaprio will focus his U.N. role on climate change issues.

“His global stardom is the perfect match for this global challenge,” the

secretary-general told a news conference.

Ban said DiCaprio’s first act as a Messenger of Peace will be to address the climate summit he is holding next Tuesday on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly’s annual ministerial meeting, which 120 world leaders are expected to attend. Ban said the aim is to promote commitments to curb greenhouse gas emissions and pave the way for a global climate agreement in 2015.

DiCaprio established a foundation in 1998 with a mission to promote the Earth’s last wild places and build a more harmonious relationship between humanity and the natural world. According to the U.N., the foundation through

grants, media projects and public campaigns and appearances by DiCaprio, has brought attention and funds to three areas — protecting biodiversity, conservation of oceans and forests, and climate change.

DiCaprio said in a statement that he is honored to be a Messenger of Peace and support the secretary-general “in his efforts to address one of the most important issues we face as a global community.”

“I feel a moral obligation to speak out at this key moment in human history — it is a moment for action,” he said. “How we respond to the climate crisis in the coming years will likely determine the fate of humanity and our planet.”

DiCaprio gained international fame for his role in “Titanic” and has been nominated for five Academy Awards, including for “Aviator” and “The Wolf of Wall Street.” He won Golden Globes for his performance in “Aviator” and “The Wolf of Wall Street.”

MANGUPURA - Waste management problem in the Badung tourism industry remains to need serious attention. Of the thousands of existing tourism businesses in Badung, not all of them have a waste management system complying with the requirements. In the area of Kuta and South Kuta, for example, a total of 29 businesses mostly consisting of tourism businesses have been imposed with sanctions because they did not meet the requirements in the waste management.

“We recognize that not all the tourism businesses are eligible in the waste management. Not long ago, we imposed administrative sanctions on 29 businesses in Kuta and Tanjung Benoa.

The violation was dominated by tourism industry whose waste management did not qualify,” said the Head of the Badung Environment Agency (BLH), I Ketut Sudarsana, accompanied by the Division Head of Supervision and Control I Nengah Sukarta.

He explained the administrative sanction imposed was in the form of written reprimand. It was imposed because the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) of the tourism business had a problem. The WWTP of tourism business did not work and had inadequate capacity so that the waste discharged directly ran into the drainage channel.

Sanction in the form of reprimand was an initial sanction for violators.

From the reports received, so far nearly 90 percent of the employers imposed with the sanctions would follow the requirements as specified in the written reprimand.

Nevertheless, his party asserted that if the next verification process found out that that business premises remained stubborn, the employers would be threatened with tougher sanctions.

Indonesia must beware of FTA threat Bali Post

DENPASAR - Free Trade Agreement (FTA) is not only the institution facilitating businessmen in conducting international transactions in Asia. This agreement will facilitate the countries whose industrial technology and manufacturing have been developed to dominate the market potential of a weak country.

“If businesspeople in weak countries like Indonesia do not alert against the unfair competition, the concept of liberalism will become a powerful weapon to control national trade and markets,” said Chairman of the Indonesian Economists Association (ISEI) of Bali Chapter, Prof. Dr. Ketut Rahyuda, in Denpasar.

According to him, Indonesia would be a colony for the players of free market, chiefly in the matter of dominating the market share of automotive, telecommunications and other manufacturing industries. More seriously, this country can be said to have not been ready to face various free

trade agreements (FTA), “Most importantly, businessmen must be capable of backing themselves to survive in facing businessman from other countries.

FTA will become a threat for weak countries because they lose in competition against business people from strong countries,” he said.

He saw that Indonesia still improved itself in the matter of quality and product capacity in order to produce superior products with high competitiveness. Such an effort was not only intended to face Chinese businessman, but also those from India, Australia, New Zealand as well as the ASEAN

Economic Community.

“Even though Indonesia loses the domination of international trade, it is actually still able to be repaired because macroeconomically we have a competitive advantage and it is not owned by other competing countries,” he said.

According to him, Indonesia was rich in natural resources and human resources. But they would not be enough to guarantee the competitiveness if the human resources still had inferior business quality. Meanwhile, the richness in human resources in terms of quantity would be a huge market potential for strong countries to

conduct a transaction of goods or services.

“If the two resource advantages cannot be managed optimally, then our country will become a low class country that will persistently lose and be unable to compete against other countries in the world,” he said.

He mentioned the lack of infrastructure had an impact on the competitiveness tending to be more inefficient in the free trade.

Secondly, Indonesia was actually able to increase the efficiency of the national labor market. Large number of labor resources working in various business sectors would enable the human resources to be selected and made into professional workforce.

“Planned professionalism of the workforce will be able to increase the overall efficiency of various business sectors, grow job opportunities and create profes-

The products manufactured by micro and small industries in Bali experienced a negative growth in the second quarter of 2014. Its growth experienced a slowdown of 2.53 percent compared to the previous quarter.

Similarly, the growth of small industry in Bali was also below the national growth of 6.17 percent.

“Although the foreign tourist visit increased, the purchasing power of domestic or local buyers remains very low, so that it had an impact on the decrease in production of small entrepreneurs. Even, this figure is smaller than the growth in the same quarter of 2013, amounting to 5.47 percent,” said the Head of Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Bali, in Denpasar, Panusunan Siregar, Tuesday (Sep 16).

According to him, contraction of the production growth generated by micro-small businesses in Bali was also affected by the increase in electricity tariff. Policy of the PLN resulted in the price increase in goods and services. “Similarly, the condition also affects the competitiveness of the industry as a whole,” he said.

He admitted that the growth of micro and small industries depended on the business environment created as a joint venture between the small businesses, government, and the entity of local community.

kinds of problems. But specifically, the main problem faced by them is the lack of business development and capitalization notably the access to banking institutions,” he said.

Actually, he said the role of micro and small industry was very strategic to create employment and welfare as well as improve the living standards of the local communities. Even, the performance of Bali’s economy was remarkably supported by the presence of the micro and small enterprises.

“All the activities of micro and small industry are able to absorb a workforce of 174,900 people or 17.89 percent of the workforce on this island,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) of Badung, AA Ngurah Alit Wiraputra, hoped the banking agency in Bali could support the small businesses. “So far, bank only disburses loans at lower interest to big companies. Conversely, it will specify complicated requirements for small industries,” he said.

He mentioned that thousands of micro and small entrepreneurs had been untouched by banking services. Actually, based on the existing data, the explored market potential of microcredit was only 30 percent of the potential available reaching IDR 1,000 trillion.

“Apparently the micro-businesses get less attention, but have the toughness to withstand in the crisis. They run with restrictedness but keep on growing and contributing to the economy of Bali,” he said. (kmb27)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Lilly, AstraZeneca team up on Alzheimer’s drug

INDIANAPOLIS — Eli Lilly and Co. plans to pay up to $500 million to fellow drugmaker AstraZeneca as part of a collaboration to develop and sell a potential Alzheimer’s disease treatment that is in the early stages of clinical testing. Lilly said Tuesday it will make an initial milestone payment of $50 million to AstraZeneca, which will handle manufacturing of the drug. Indianapolis-based Lilly will lead clinical development of the potential treatment, labeled AZD3293, while working with researchers from London-based AstraZeneca. The companies then will share global profits or losses if the drug is approved.

WASHINGTON - The average American’s waistline has expanded over the past decade, adding about one inch (2.5 centimeters) of belly fat among the general public from 1999 to 2012, researchers said Tuesday.

The findings in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) are the first to show how the nation’s obesity epidemic has translated to added paunch in recent years, and the study said the trend toward larger waistlines was “significant.”

About one third of American adults -- 34.9 percent or 78.6 million people -- are considered obese, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a condition that raises the risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes.

Those figures are based on body mass index, a ratio calculated from weight and height. Recent research has shown no change in obesity rates according to BMI between 2003-2004 and 2011-2012.

But when CDC researcher Earl Ford and colleagues examined data about waist circumference from the same national health registries, dating from 1999-2012, they found

that there was a definite trend toward bigger bellies in the United States.

“Our analyses using data from the same surveys indicate that the prevalence of abdominal obesity is still increasing,” said the report.

“The reasons for increases in waist circumference in excess of what would be expected from changes in BMI remain speculative, but several factors, including sleep deprivation, endocrine disruptors, and certain medications, have been proposed as potential explanations.”

For the purposes of the study, abdominal obesity was defined as a waist circumference greater than 40.2 inches (102 centimeters) in men and greater than 34.6 inches (88 centimeters) in women.

From a pool of nearly 33,000 men and nonpregnant women ages 20 years or older, “the overall ageadjusted average waist circumference increased progressively and

significantly, from 37.6 inches in 1999-2000 to 38.8 inches in 20112012,” said the study.

Men gained on average 0.8 inches and women added 1.5 inches, it said.

“The overall age-adjusted prevalence of abdominal obesity increased significantly from 46.4 percent in 1999-2000 to 54.2 percent in 2011-2012,” the study added.

Men and women saw “significant increases,” with male abdominal obesity increasing from 37 to 44 percent, and women going from 55 to 65 percent.

The gains were highest among African Americans and Mexican Americans, the researchers found.

“Our results support the routine measurement of waist circumference in clinical care consistent with current recommendations as a key step in initiating the prevention, control, and management of obesity among patients,” said the study.

Lilly also is developing solanezumab, which is in late-stage testing as a possible treatment for mild cases of Alzheimer’s.

Indianapolis-based Lilly will take a charge of 3 cents per share to its third-quarter earnings for the initial payment in the collaboration.

Shares of Lilly rose 7 cents to $65.26 in morning trading Tuesday, while U.S-traded shares of AstraZeneca fell 46 cents to $73.32 and broader indexes rose slightly.

Urine test for cervical cancer virus

LONDON - A simple urine test for the virus that causes cervical cancer could offer a less invasive and more acceptable alternative to the conventional cervical smear test, researchers said on Tuesday.

In a study comparing the accuracy of urine sample testing with smear testing conducted by a doctor, scientists from Britain and Spain found the results were good and said using the urine test to detect human papillomavirus (HPV) could lead to more women agreeing to be screened. “The detection of HPV in urine is non-invasive, easily accessible and acceptable to women, and a test with these qualities could considerably increase uptake,” the researchers said on Tuesday in thebmj.com, the online version of the British Medical Journal.

The study, which analysed 14 studies involving 1,443 sexually active women, was led by Neha Pathak of the women’s health research unit at Queen Mary University of London. Compared with cervical smear samples, urine HPV testing had an overall sensitivity -- the proportion of positives correctly identified -- of 87 percent, and a specificity -- the proportion of negatives correctly identified -- of 94 percent.

Urine testing for the particularly high risk strains of HPV that cause the majority of cervical cancer cases, had an overall sensitivity

of 73 percent and a specificity of 98 percent compared with cervical samples. HPV is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections, with up to 80 percent of sexually active women infected at some point in their lives.

Infection with specific high risk strains of HPV can cause cervical cancer, which kills around 266,000 women a year globally, according to the World Health Organisation. By the far the vast majority of cervical cancer deaths are in poorer countries where access to screening and prevention methods is less widely available.

BANGLI - Other than being synonymous with Penelokan tourism and fresh tangerine of Kintamani, Bangli also has an adequately interesting historical potential to be known. The county offering cool atmosphere holds a number of ancient relics. One of them is the cliff temple located at Jehem Kaja hamlet, Jehem village, Tembuku subdistrict. The cliff temple in the form of relief is estimated to originate from the period of Buddha or around the eleventh century.

To reach the location of the cliff temple, visitors must first pass through a small, winding and damaged path in paddy field. Since it is located at the bottom of the cliff and adjacent to the streams of Melangit River, visitors must go down by stepping on dozens of stairs. Nevertheless, the fatigue after going down the stairs would be paid off with the wonderful charms of natural scenery around the site.

Custodian of the Jehem Cliff Temple, I Nengah Diarta, explained on Monday (Sep 15) that the cliff temple consisting of sandstone pieces was believed to have been first discovered by Jehem resident around March 1987. The temple was found near the streams of Melangit River, not far from the location of the current conservation.

“Two years before it was discovered, the cliff temple fell down due to landslide,” he explained.

By local residents, the cliff temple was then elevated and removed to the current location. Diarta said that before discovered, the Heritage

Preservation Agency (BPCG) of Gianyar had sent a letter to village authority in search for the existence of the temple. Unfortunately, the search did not work then. The cliff temple fell by itself due to a landslide. After discovered, the Gianyar Heritage Preservation Agency then placed it at the current location. The temple with the height of about 1.5 meters was then given a protective hall.

He added that a number of students from the Department of Archaeology having examined the cliff temple estimated if the temple was made in the eleventh century or Buddhist era. It was evidenced by the temple relief depicting the presence of stupas and two people standing beneath it. “It is according to the research made by the students. However, as per local mythology, this temple was made by the Lord Batur who had passed through the river and had a sojourn at the location,” he said.

Previously, the cliff temple was once consecrated on Anggarakasih Medangsia. But in later development, the ceremony was only organized by the family of Diarta based on his own belief.

Though having historical values, only some few travelers visited the location. According to Diarta, it probably happened as the location was quite remote and isolated.

Moreover, condition of the existing road was not worth passing through by vehicles. “So far, there are only some few travelers visiting the object. All this time, the visitors are dominated by students that will make a research,” he added. (ina)

She pointed out that the success of the general elections in Indonesia this year had also been acknowledged by several foreign representatives in Jakarta, marked by the acceptance of the Constitutional Court’s ruling over the dispute that arose between the election candidates.

“Foreign ambassadors have seen that the democratic machinery in Indonesia has functioned well,” she affirmed.

She emphasized that democracy had also continued to develop in the ASEAN region, which is apparent from the development of democracy in Myanmar that has become more open, despite a setback in Thailand.

Indonesia hopes that the rate of participation in the 7th BDF will remain high.

Embarrassing, demand for salary increase

DENPASAR - Request for salary increase by legislators of the Bali House from IDR 24 million to IDR 50 million was not only criticized by some elements of society. Different opinion also occurred in the internal circle of the Bali House regarding the discourse of the salary increase. A number of legislators deplored the request for the salary increase. It implied if the legislators were whining and begging for the salary increase and it was very embarrassing.

“Please do not beg. When begging, it gives an impression that we do not know about the norms. If we consider it inadequate, it must be inadequate. But, if we consider it to outgo, yes it does. Never ask for the increase,” said a legislator of the Bali House having been elected for two periods, Utami Dwi Suryadi, Tuesday (Sep 16).

Regarding the salaries, this Democrat politician from Denpasar asked the legislators to adjust the amount of rights received to the existing rules. Thus, it was not necessary to request many things.

“Just comply with our normative rights. Everything has been set forth in the rules. It’s no need to ask for the increase. When the time goes up, it will go up. If we ask for but there is no way to increase, it remains the same, right?” said Utami.

Similar opinion was delivered by a new comer legislator of the Bali House, AA Ngurah Adhi Ardhana.

“We do not need to beg (for the raise.) We must comply with the rules,” said the PDI-P politician from Denpasar.

According to him, the legislators

should show off the performance and dedication first for the people who had entrusted their vote in the last legislative election. “If people think we are good and our achievement is appreciated and it’s decent (for a raise), please go on. Otherwise, please do not,” said Adhi doubling as the Secretary of the Indonesia Hotels and Restaurant Association (PHRI) of Denpasar Chapter.

He suggested if there were indeed rules on the performancebased salary, it could be better. “For example, when there is regulationdrafting, each legislator can give a study, so that it means it is based on performance. Asking for salary increase without activity is not good.

Personally, my salary is indeed earmarked for the community as promised during the campaign,” said Adhi while showing off the salary receipt worth IDR 26 million (before deducted for faction and the party).

He worried if a number of legislators continued to demand for salary increase, then the public criticism would continue to flow.

MANILA — The Philippines’ most active volcano has sent more huge lava fragments rolling down its slopes in an ongoing gentle eruption that has prompted authorities to evacuate thousands of villagers, officials said Wednesday. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has warned that a “hazardous eruption” of Mount Mayon, located in the eastern Philippines, is possible within weeks.

Increased restiveness was recorded overnight, including 270 incidents of lava fragments and super-hot boulders rolling down from Mayon’s crater — nearly four times the number recorded the previous day. Some reached the upper portion of a gully on the volcano’s southeastern side, indicating that the lava dome has breached that side of the crater. The number of lowfrequency volcanic earthquakes also increased.

Molten lava has accumulated at the top of the 2,460-meter (8,070-foot) volcano’s crater, creating a glow in the night sky that

sparked both awe and fear among spectators. “It’s already erupting, but not explosive,” said Renato Solidum, who heads the government’s volcano monitoring agency.

“Currently, the activity is just lava coming down. If there is an explosion, all sides of the volcano are threatened.”

Volcanologist Ed Laguerta said he saw huge glowing lava fragments and super-hot boulders rolling down from Mayon’s crater late Tuesday from as far as 12 kilometers (7 miles) away. “They are big because they can be seen from afar, and they splinter, so they could be car-sized,” he added.

Mount Mayon, a popular tourist site known for its near-perfect cone, lies in coconut-producing Albay province, about 340 kilometers (210 miles) southeast of Manila. The provincial disaster operations center reported Wednesday that nearly 24,000 people from villages within an 8-kilometer (5-mile) radius from the crater had been evacuated.

Mayor Herbie Aguas said his farming town of Santo Domingo, among the closest to the volcano,

has a frightening legacy from Mayon. The volcano nearly wiped out the municipality’s entire population in an 1897 eruption with pyroclastic flows — superheated gas and volcanic debris that race down the slopes at high speeds, vaporizing everything in their path.

“We are praying that it would not be the worst-case scenario,” Aguas said, adding that nearly 4,000 of the 40,000 residents in his town who live within a government-declared danger zone had started to evacuate to safer areas.

The volcano has erupted 50 times in the last 500 years, sometimes violently, endangering thousands of poor villagers who insist on living or farming in the danger zone.

Villagers living near the volcano have erected huge white crosses at the entrance of their neighborhoods, hoping they will protect them from harm.

On May 7, 2013, the volcano suddenly spewed ash, killing five climbers, including three Germans, who had ventured near the summit despite warnings of possible danger.

Silva was thrust into the Socialist Party’s presidential nomination when its candidate of choice, Eduardo Campos, died in a plane crash last month. Since then, her anti-establishment profile has propelled her to a neck-and-neck race with Rousseff.

Silva says she would re-emphasize ties to the United States and Europe, mostly by working to land trade deals with each. Such moves could cause tension with Mercosur, which prohibits members from making bilateral deals without the group’s approval. Under Silva, “there will be a change of direction in foreign policy,” her top adviser Mauricio Rands told supporters at an event unveiling her proposals. “Brazil should be the promoter of bilateral and regional (trade) agreements.”

It would be a sharp change in direction for the proverbial slumbering giant. Under Rousseff and her two-term predecessor Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Brazil has given

strong backing to leftist regional allies, such as Cuba, Venezuela, Ecuador and Bolivia.

Rousseff beamed in January as she stood beside Cuban President Raul Castro at a ribbon-cutting ceremony to open the first phase of an overhaul of the Port of Mariel, which the Communist nation expects will become the largest industrial port in the Caribbean.

It was the clout of her government that persuaded Mercosur to set aside fears about possible violation of its democracy rules and welcome Venezuela into membership.

At the same time, Rousseff was not afraid to ruffle Washington’s feathers by rejecting an invitation to make a formal state visit to the U.S. capital, the first extended to a Brazilian leader in two decades. WASHINGTON - Developing countries and advanced economies differ greatly in their level of “skepticism” towards international trade and foreign investment, a study of people across 44 countries revealed Tuesday.

A median of 81 percent of those surveyed believed that international trade and global business ties were good things, according to a study by the US-based Pew Research Center.

However, views on trade, jobs and wages varied greatly between nations, with people from advanced economies, in particular France, Italy, Japan and the United States, having a high degree of skepticism.

“That undercurrent of skepticism could complicate current government efforts to further deepen and broaden global markets,” the survey said, with particular emphasis on US and EU trade agreements being negotiated.

While a median of 66 percent of people in developing economies believe trade increases jobs, only 20 percent of Americans agree, making them the least likely group to concur.

Tunisians, Ugandans and Vietnamese, on the other hand, responded the most enthusiastically.

And while 45 percent of the entire global sample believed that foreignled mergers and acquisitions were a good thing, only 31 percent of advanced-economy respondents and 28 percent of Americans agreed.

A median of 87 percent of people in developing countries believed that trade was good, while 84 percent of people in advanced economies held the same opinion.

A median of 78 percent of those in emerging markets meanwhile see trade as beneficial, while 52 percent say that trade creates jobs.

“Such emerging market sentiment may reflect the experience in China and elsewhere, where growing international business ties have been associated with more employment opportunities and higher incomes,” Pew said.

A total of 48,643 people were interviewed in the survey conducted from March 17 to June 5.

China has the fastest growing demand, jumping to a share of about 15 percent of the world’s diamond market from less than three percent in 2003.

But it is not expected to overtake the US market’s 40 percent share for more more than a decade, De Beers CEO Philippe Mellier said.

“China and India, the engine for growth, these two big markets clearly could be as big as the US in the next maybe 15 years,” said Mellier, who was in Hong Kong for the Jewellery and Gem Fair.

“For China to go up to 40 percent share of the world market, it’s still some ways to go,” Mellier said, adding he expects the Chinese market to grow more than 10 percent per annum for “many more years”.

De Beers said China’s anti-corruption drive, which has hurt demand for luxury goods, would not affect the diamond industry.

“I think our business is less impacted by that compared to others,” Stephen Lussier, CEO of De Beers Forevermark said, with diamonds usually used at weddings and other “emotional events” in life.

Global diamond jewellery sales were around US$79 billion in 2013, up 3.0 percent compared to 2012, according to De Beers’ first Diamond Insight Report.

Sales are expected to grow in the long term helped by recovery in the US economy as well as the growth of the middle class in the developing markets of China and India.

The company had said earlier than it expects “good to very good” second quarter results in India, which has seen increasing demand for the gems.

Founded in 1888 in South Africa, De Beers last year reported $1 billion in operating profit -- more than double that of 2012.

As admitted by an artist of drama gong from Bangli, Ida Bagus Made Ngurah Yasa aka Gus Topok, the lack of audience favoring the drama gong almost occurred throughout Bali. Only some few people were still fond of watching the performing art. “Since the past 15 years, the condition has been sluggish. Possibly, the current entertainments available today have made people reluctant to see drama gong,” he said.

According to him, the current community preferred to see the art performance presenting entertainment with jokes and shorter duration.

One of the Balinese traditional performing arts currently favored was prembon. Its duration was only about 15-30 minutes, much shorter than that of drama gong reaching 2-3 hours. In terms of storyline, prembon was a blend of arja operetta and drama gong offering fresh entertaining jokes.

Meanwhile, the drama gong performance gave more highlights on moral messages such as rwa bhineda or basic dualism and palace-centered storyline.

According to Gus Topok, since people had more interest in the prembon show, a number of senior drama gong artists in Bangli moved the bow to prembon art. Other than him, several artists who moved the bow included Petruk, Mbok Cablek and Sangayu Tirtawati. “Mbok Cablek which used to be a lady in the drama gong is now playing the role as desak rai in the prembon,” he said.

Although it was not much different in terms of staging, but in terms of the art preservation, he recognized the existence of drama gong was quite alarming. Since it was rarely desirable, he worried about the existence of the art presented by about 13 players would only leave a name and could no longer be recognized by future generation. “To me, it does not matter, but in terms of preservation, our future generation may not be familiar with the drama gong again,” he added. GIANYAR - Other than better known for its Kecak Dance, Bona village located in Blahbatuh, Gianyar is also known to become the papyrus-made craft center in the 1980s. Virtually every household at Bona village deeply got involved in the woven papyrus craft activities.

Creatively, they make a woven papyrus craft in different products such as hats, baskets, bags and so on.

The products were very attractive to travelers coming to Bali.

Bona village had become a tourist destination, where it was visited by many travelers every day to look for woven handicraft souvenirs. Now, such an atmosphere only leaves in memory. Unfortunately, only some few crafters remain to survive and can be counted on fingers.

Development and global competitiveness have made home craft industry only leave in memory.

The woven papyrus craft of Bona villagers almost has been at the verge of extinction. Shops and stalls

formerly offering original woven papyrus handicrafts of Bona begin to disappear. Many people are no longer getting involved in the activity of weaving papyrus handicrafts attracting to travelers. In harmony with the loss of travelers to witness the Kecak Dance at Bona, the woven papyrus craft is also left by travelers.

To overcome this problem, many artisans finally shift their profession. They attempt to find out other jobs, while only some few remain to survive but make woven papyrus craft for ritual paraphernalia. One of them is ornament of penjor. Festive atmosphere can be seen along the main road section of Bona village on Galungan celebration.

A number of shops and stalls sell various ornaments of penjor made of papyrus installed on Galungan Day. Papyrus craftsmen at Bona village can only get blessing during religious holiday season. Amidst the current pragmatic lifestyle of the community, the demand for penjor ornaments tends to increase.

But behind it, there is something

missing for the papyrus craftsmen at Bona village.

One of the papyrus crafters of Bona, Gede Dharma Kusuma, recently admitted that many artisans formerly plaiting papyrus had taken another job. It was caused by travelers that were no longer made a visit to Bona. In addition, it was also difficult to obtain the papyrus raw materials. “Nowadays, the woven papyrus craft are dominated

by Chinese products. So, our people switch to the making of ritual paraphernalia such as penjor ornament,” he explained.

Though having shifted to the production of penjor paraphernalia, they are still constrained by the existence of raw materials such as papyrus. The papyrus is brought in Madura, Sumbawa and Sulawesi.

In Bali the papyrus is very rare. It is only obtained from Karangasem region, and the amount is very limited. At least, the arrival of raw material can reach a truck each month.

Penjor ornament products made from papyrus leaves are currently

in great demand by the public.

Other than being practical, the penjor ornament products made by Bona residents have been scattered

in several regions in Gianyar and Klungkung. Even, the products are also sent to other regions such as Lampung. (dar)

Gaza widow offers insight into world of spies

GAZA CITY — The 48-year-old Palestinian woman’s husband was shot to death in 2012 by militants in the Gaza Strip for spying for Israel. A mother of seven, she herself was jailed by Gaza’s Hamas rulers for aiding and abetting a spy — her husband. The widow’s account to The Associated Press gave a rare look into the secret espionage side of the war between Israel and the Hamas militant group.

According to her, Israeli security agents took advantage of her late husband’s financial troubles a decade ago, luring him into collaborating by offering him a permit to work in Israel. She was later recruited when she was allowed to take one of their children to Israel for medical treatment.

“Our life was hell. We were scared,” she said of their years feeding Israel information. “I used to look over my shoulder when I am out in the market, get scared when I see a police car.” The woman, who was released in December, spoke on condition of anonymity because Hamas does not allow freed collaborators to talk to the press.

Israel has historically relied on collaborators against Palestinian militants and activists, recruiting them with methods ranging from entrapment and blackmail to cash

and perks. Hamas, in turn, has done whatever it can to stop collaborators — particularly by killing them in public as a deterrent to others — since it holds them responsible for helping Israel assassinate dozens of its top figures.

The issue emerged again with the latest round of fighting in Gaza, which ended late last month. “It was a terrifying message to society and a deterrent to other collaborators,” Salah Abdel-Atti of Gaza’s Independent Commission for Human Rights said.

But rights concerns win little sympathy among Palestinians, who widely see informing for Israel as unforgivable treason — even among Gazans opposed to Hamas’ iron fisted control of the territory since 2007.

A judge issued him back-to-back sentences for a total of 98 years in prison.

But a court clerk mistakenly wrote in Lima-Marin’s file that the sentences were to run at the same time. Corrections officials rely on that

file to determine how much time an inmate should serve, and Lima-Marin was released on parole in 2008. Now 35, he held a job, married his former girlfriend, helped her raise her son and had a son of his own before authorities realized the mistake in January and sent him back to prison.

If Lima-Marin is not released, “his children will lose a hardworking father, and his community will lose an influential positive role model,” the group wrote in the letter, which was also sent to Colorado Attorney General John Suthers, whose office is handling an appeal Lima-Marin filed in August. A spokeswoman for Suthers declined to comment, and Hickenlooper’s spokeswoman did not return a call.

The group held a prayer vigil outside the governor’s mansion, where they were joined by Lima-Marin’s wife, Jasmine, and their sons, Justus, 7, and Josiah, 4. Jasmine Lima-Marin said her husband never hid his past, but he tried to use his story to steer other young men down a different path.

his staff to generate additional funds for the minister’s operational costs. Jero’s staff then carried out fictitious activities, which were funded by sponsors from private parties.

Sutan denied the allegations that he was aware of the extortion being conducted by Jero Wacik since they are high-ranking members of the ruling Democrat Party.

case on the discussion of the revised budget for the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry (ESDM) in 2013.

Earlier, Chief Economic Minister Chairul Tanjung expressed hope that the proceedings at the ESDM will not be disrupted as Minister Jero Wacik has been named a suspect.

“We hope the activities of the ESDM will not be disturbed and will run as usual,” Tanjung remarked.

Mitsubishi to build new car plant in Indonesia Associated Press

JAKARTA — Mitsubishi Motors Corp. said Tuesday it will build a new car factory in Indonesia as part of a plan to raise its production capacity in the country from 160,000 to 240,000 vehicles per year.

Chief Executive Osamu Masuko said the Japanese automaker will invest $600 million in the assembly plant. He said construction is expected to begin in May next year in Bekasi, a West Java town just east of the capital Jakarta.

The plant would begin production of multi-purpose vehicles in 2017, Masuko said after a meeting

with Indonesian’s Ministry of Industry M.S. Hidayat. Multi-purpose vehicles are also known as people carriers because they comfortably transport more people than regular cars.

Masuko said the growth potential of Indonesia, the world’s fourth most populous nation with 240 million people, was a reason for building the plant.

The factory’s annual production of 80,000 vehicles would mostly be sold locally with about a quarter exported to the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and other countries.

The Association of Indonesian Automotive Manufacturers expects Indonesia’s car sales to increase by 10 percent this year to 1.3 million vehicles, helped by sales of low cost green cars.

According to him, this time, the cause of most of the forest fires is deliberate burning by the people who want to clear land for new plantations.

“We have deployed seven helicopters to drop water over the land on fire. Apart from that, the local Disaster Mitigation Agency has also conducted several efforts to extinguish the fire,” Sutopo added.

Mercedes has appointed DTM race winner Pascal Wehrlein as its Formula 1 reserve driver.

Just a day after Wehrlein became the DTM’s youngest ever race winner, Mercedes has decided that in the event either Lewis Hamilton or Nico Rosberg cannot race, the 19-year-old German will fill in for them.

He has done valuable simulator work with Mercedes all season and last week completed a 500km test in a 2012 F1 car at Portimao.

Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff said: “Aside from Nico and Lewis, he is the driver most familiar with all the procedures of our F1 W05 Hybrid and therefore the right choice for the role of reserve driver.

“He took an important step last week when he drove a Formula 1 car for the first time - and we were pleased to see him deliver a composed and impressive test, in line with our expectations.”

Wehrlein, who finished runnerup in the 2012 F3 Euro Series, will travel with the F1 team to the remaining flyaway races in case he is needed. “It is a nice recognition of my efforts that I have been nominated as reserve driver,” he said.

“For me, it’s a dream come true to have completed this test and now to take on my new role.

“All my life, I have worked hard to get the opportunity to drive an F1 car. And it was always my goal to do it with MercedesBenz.”

INCHEON — The Asian Games torch arrived in host city Incheon on Wednesday, two days before the opening ceremony that will formally inaugurate the two-week competition featuring almost 10,000 athletes.

The torch will be stored overnight in the port city west of South Korea’s capital Seoul before being carried on the final legs of its 6,000-kilometer (3,700-mile) journey around South Korea set to culminate in Friday night’s opening ceremony featuring “Gangnam Style” singer PSY and Chinese pianist Lang Lang.

TURIN, Italy - Carlos Tevez scored his first Champions League goals for more than five years to give patchy Juventus a 2-0 win over stubborn debutants Malmo in Group A on Tuesday. The feisty Argentine, who played for Manchester United when he last scored in the competition in 2009 and had endured 14 Champions League games without netting since, broke his duck after playing an exquisite one-two with Kwadwo Asamaoh just before the hour and then curled in a free kick at the end.

Tevez, who failed to score at all in the competition during his stint with Manchester City, got the Serie A champions out of a tangle, his first goal coming just as they seemed to be running out of ideas against the 1979 European Cup runners-up.

Juventus are hoping to re-establish themselves as a force in European football this season but their performance suggested there is still a huge gap between Serie A, which they have dominated over the last three seasons, and the Champions League.

Malmo, with an average age of just over 24, were anything but overawed as they kept Juve at bay for nearly an hour.

“I was satisfied with the first 60 minutes up to the Tevez goal. We were very disciplined in the first half and got them into the corners,” said Malmo coach Age Hareide. “Carlos Tevez was absolutely the difference between the two sides today but Juventus are full of quality players.”

He then made the points safe by curling a free kick into the far corner from the edge of the area in the 90th minute.

In between his goals, Olsen made a brilliant double stop to defy Fernando Llorente in the 84th minute, first parrying a header and then managing to scoop away the Spaniard’s backheeled effort from the rebound.

“In the first half, we were too organised,” Juve’s new coach Massimiliano Allegri, whose side have won their first two Serie A games, told reporters.

Everton given permission to build new stadium

Hamburg appoints Josef Zinnbauer as coach Associated Press

HAMBURG — Hamburger SV has promoted under-23 coach Josef “Joe” Zinnbauer to firstteam manager on Tuesday after sacking Mirko Slomka the day before.

The Bundesliga club said on its website that the 44-year-old was given the position “until further notice,” and will be assisted by former youth coach Patrick Rahmen. He is Hamburg’s fifth coach in three-anda-half years.

“Joe has shown that he can quickly mold a team from a group of players through his work and results with our under-23s in the (fourth-tier) Regionalliga Nord,” said Hamburg chairman Dietmar Beiersdorfer, referring to eight wins from eight games.

Zinnbauer and his new team of coaching staff take over on Wednesday. “I am convinced

they will do our team well,” Beiersdorfer said.

Zinnbauer’s first game in charge will be at home to defending champion Bayern Munich on Saturday.

Slomka was fired late Monday after the club’s poor start to the season. Hamburg is scoreless in three Bundesliga games and bottom of the table.

The 47-year-old Slomka just saved Hamburg from relegation last season following the dismissals of predecessors Bert van Marwijk and Thorsten Fink.

His last game was a 3-0 loss at his former club Hannover on Sunday. In 16 Bundesliga games he lost 10, drew three and won just three.

Hamburg is the only side to have played each season in the Bundesliga since the league was formed in 1963.

The club has failed to win any of its three opening Bundesliga games for the past four seasons.

TURIN, Italy - Carlos Tevez scored his first Champions League goals for more than five years to give patchy Juventus a 2-0 win over stubborn debutants Malmo in Group A on Tuesday. The feisty Argentine, who played for Manchester United when he last scored in the competition in 2009 and had endured 14 Champions League games without netting since, broke his duck after playing an exquisite one-two with Kwadwo Asamaoh just before the hour and then curled in a free kick at the end.

Tevez, who failed to score at all in the competition during his stint with Manchester City, got the Serie A champions out of a tangle, his first goal coming just as they seemed to be running out of ideas against the 1979 European Cup runners-up.

Juventus are hoping to re-establish themselves as a force in European football this season but their performance suggested there is still a huge gap between Serie A, which they have dominated over the last three seasons, and the Champions League.

Malmo, with an average age of just over 24, were anything but overawed as they kept Juve at bay for nearly an hour.

Everton given permission to build new stadium

Mercedes has appointed DTM race winner Pascal Wehrlein as its Formula 1 reserve driver.

Just a day after Wehrlein became the DTM’s youngest ever race winner, Mercedes has decided that in the event either Lewis Hamilton or Nico Rosberg cannot race, the 19-year-old German will fill in for them.

He has done valuable simulator work with Mercedes all season and last week completed a 500km test in a 2012 F1 car at Portimao.

Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff said: “Aside from Nico and Lewis, he is the driver most familiar with all the procedures of our F1 W05 Hybrid and therefore the right choice for the role of reserve driver.

“He took an important step last week when he drove a Formula 1 car for the first time - and we were pleased to see him deliver a composed and impressive test, in line with our expectations.”

Wehrlein, who finished runnerup in the 2012 F3 Euro Series, will travel with the F1 team to the remaining flyaway races in case he is needed. “It is a nice recognition of my efforts that I have been nominated as reserve driver,” he said.

“For me, it’s a dream come true to have completed this test and now to take on my new role.

“All my life, I have worked hard to get the opportunity to drive an F1 car. And it was always my goal to do it with MercedesBenz.”

INCHEON — The Asian Games torch arrived in host city Incheon on Wednesday, two days before the opening ceremony that will formally inaugurate the two-week competition featuring almost 10,000 athletes.

The torch will be stored overnight in the port city west of South Korea’s capital Seoul before being carried on the final legs of its 6,000-kilometer (3,700-mile) journey around South Korea set to culminate in Friday night’s opening ceremony featuring “Gangnam Style” singer PSY and Chinese pianist Lang Lang.

The football tournament began Sunday and Japan, the defending men’s champion, already has posted a victory over Kuwait. The Japanese men play their second game Wednesday night against Iraq, which took silver at the 1996 Asian Games and opened the 2014 tour-

Among other matches Wednesday, host South Korea plays Saudi Arabia, both of which won their first matches.

South Korea’s women’s team, who were third at the last Asian Games, play India, a day after North Korea, runners-up to Japan in 2010, opened their campaign with a resounding 5-0 win over Vietnam.

Local fans have been cheering for North Korea’s footballers, despite ongoing tensions on the divided peninsula dating from the 1950-1953 Korean War that ended in a ceasefire rather than a peace

Gaza widow offers insight into world of spies

GAZA CITY — The 48-year-old Palestinian woman’s husband was shot to death in 2012 by militants in the Gaza Strip for spying for Israel. A mother of seven, she herself was jailed by Gaza’s Hamas rulers for aiding and abetting a spy — her husband. The widow’s account to The Associated Press gave a rare look into the secret espionage side of the war between Israel and the Hamas militant group.

According to her, Israeli security agents took advantage of her late husband’s financial troubles a decade ago, luring him into collaborating by offering him a permit to work in Israel. She was later recruited when she was allowed to take one of their children to Israel for medical treatment.

“Our life was hell. We were scared,” she said of their years feeding Israel information. “I used to look over my shoulder when I am out in the market, get scared when I see a police car.” The woman, who was released in December, spoke on condition of anonymity because Hamas does not allow freed collaborators to talk to the press.

Israel has historically relied on collaborators against Palestinian militants and activists, recruiting them with methods ranging from entrapment and blackmail to cash

and perks. Hamas, in turn, has done whatever it can to stop collaborators — particularly by killing them in public as a deterrent to others — since it holds them responsible for helping Israel assassinate dozens of its top figures.

The issue emerged again with the latest round of fighting in Gaza, which ended late last month. During the war, militants gunned down 22 suspected spies, almost all of them on a single day after three senior Hamas military operatives were killed in an Israeli airstrike apparently guided by collaborators.

Palestinians human rights groups sharply criticized Hamas for carrying out extra-judicial killings.

“It was a terrifying message to society and a deterrent to other collaborators,” Salah Abdel-Atti of Gaza’s Independent Commission for Human Rights said.

But rights concerns win little sympathy among Palestinians, who widely see informing for Israel as unforgivable treason — even among Gazans opposed to Hamas’ iron fisted control of the territory since 2007.

Ramiz Abu Jazar, a Gazan whose brother was killed by Hamas in intraPalestinian fighting in 2007, said he’s all for killing collaborators. They are “like cancer in society,” he told the AP. “They sold their souls to the devil.”

There have been instances of Palestinians collaborating out of political conviction. Most embarrassing to Hamas, the son of the group’s co-founder Sheik Hassan Youssef spied for Israel between 1997 and 2007, dubbed “the Green Prince.”

Now in the U.S., Mosab Yousef later wrote that he did so in part out of revulsion at Hamas’ actions. But the large majority of collaborators are believed to do so because of

2000 of multiple counts of robbery, kidnapping and burglary after he and another man robbed Aurora video stores at gunpoint when he was 20.

A judge issued him back-to-back sentences for a total of 98 years in prison.

But a court clerk mistakenly wrote in Lima-Marin’s file that the sentences were to run at the same time. Corrections officials rely on that

file to determine how much time an inmate should serve, and Lima-Marin was released on parole in 2008. Now 35, he held a job, married his former girlfriend, helped her raise her son and had a son of his own before authorities realized the mistake in January and sent him back to prison.

If Lima-Marin is not released, “his children will lose a hardworking father, and his community will lose an influential positive role model,” the group wrote in the letter, which was also sent to Colorado Attorney General John Suthers, whose office is handling an appeal Lima-Marin filed in August. A spokeswoman for Suthers declined to comment, and Hickenlooper’s spokeswoman did not return a call.

The group held a prayer vigil outside the governor’s mansion, where they were joined by Lima-Marin’s wife, Jasmine, and their sons, Justus, 7, and Josiah, 4. Jasmine Lima-Marin said her husband never hid his past, but he tried to use his story to steer other young men down a different path.

Mitsubishi to build new car plant in Indonesia Associated Press

JAKARTA — Mitsubishi Motors Corp. said Tuesday it will build a new car factory in Indonesia as part of a plan to raise its production capacity in the country from 160,000 to 240,000 vehicles per year.

Chief Executive Osamu Masuko said the Japanese automaker will invest $600 million in the assembly plant. He said construction is expected to begin in May next year in Bekasi, a West Java town just east of the capital Jakarta.

The plant would begin production of multi-purpose vehicles in 2017, Masuko said after a meeting

with Indonesian’s Ministry of Industry M.S. Hidayat. Multi-purpose vehicles are also known as people carriers because they comfortably transport more people than regular cars.

Masuko said the growth potential of Indonesia, the world’s fourth most populous nation with 240 million people, was a reason for building the plant.

The factory’s annual production of 80,000 vehicles would mostly be sold locally with about a quarter exported to the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and other countries.

The Association of Indonesian Automotive Manufacturers expects Indonesia’s car sales to increase by 10 percent this year to 1.3 million vehicles, helped by sales of low cost green cars.

PONTIANAK - Haze has blanketed the capital city of West Kalimantan province, Pontianak, during the past few days as a result of forest fires in the area.

“The haze from South Sumatra had spread to Riau, Singapore, and Malaysia, thereby raising the levels of air pollution there to moderate,” Sutopo pointed out.

According to him, this time, the cause of most of the forest fires is deliberate burning by the people who want to clear land for new plantations.

“We have deployed seven helicopters to drop water over the land on fire. Apart from that, the local Disaster Mitigation Agency has also conducted several efforts to extinguish the fire,” Sutopo added.

WASHINGTON - Developing countries and advanced economies differ greatly in their level of “skepticism” towards international trade and foreign investment, a study of people across 44 countries revealed Tuesday.

A median of 81 percent of those surveyed believed that international trade and global business ties were good things, according to a study by the US-based Pew Research Center.

However, views on trade, jobs and wages varied greatly between nations, with people from advanced economies, in particular France, Italy, Japan and the United States, having a high degree of skepticism.

“That undercurrent of skepticism could complicate current government efforts to further deepen and broaden global markets,” the survey said, with particular emphasis on US and EU trade agreements being negotiated.

While a median of 66 percent of people in developing economies believe trade increases jobs, only 20 percent of Americans agree, making them the least likely group to concur.

Tunisians, Ugandans and Vietnamese, on the other hand, responded the most enthusiastically.

And while 45 percent of the entire global sample believed that foreignled mergers and acquisitions were a good thing, only 31 percent of advanced-economy respondents and 28 percent of Americans agreed.

A median of 87 percent of people in developing countries believed that trade was good, while 84 percent of people in advanced economies held the same opinion.

A median of 78 percent of those in emerging markets meanwhile see trade as beneficial, while 52 percent say that trade creates jobs.

“Such emerging market sentiment may reflect the experience in China and elsewhere, where growing international business ties have been associated with more employment opportunities and higher incomes,” Pew said.

A total of 48,643 people were interviewed in the survey conducted from March 17 to June 5.

China has the fastest growing demand, jumping to a share of about 15 percent of the world’s diamond market from less than three percent in 2003.

But it is not expected to overtake the US market’s 40 percent share for more more than a decade, De Beers CEO Philippe Mellier said.

“China and India, the engine for growth, these two big markets clearly could be as big as the US in the next maybe 15 years,” said Mellier, who was in Hong Kong for the Jewellery and Gem Fair.

“For China to go up to 40 percent share of the world market, it’s still some ways to go,” Mellier said, adding he expects the Chinese market to grow more than 10 percent per annum for “many more years”.

De Beers said China’s anti-corruption drive, which has hurt demand for luxury goods, would not affect the diamond industry.

“I think our business is less impacted by that compared to others,” Stephen Lussier, CEO of De Beers Forevermark said, with diamonds usually used at weddings and other “emotional events” in life.

Global diamond jewellery sales were around US$79 billion in 2013, up 3.0 percent compared to 2012, according to De Beers’ first Diamond Insight Report.

Sales are expected to grow in the long term helped by recovery in the US economy as well as the growth of the middle class in the developing markets of China and India.

The company had said earlier than it expects “good to very good” second quarter results in India, which has seen increasing demand for the gems.

Founded in 1888 in South Africa, De Beers last year reported $1 billion in operating profit -- more than double that of 2012.

As admitted by an artist of drama gong from Bangli, Ida Bagus Made Ngurah Yasa aka Gus Topok, the lack of audience favoring the drama gong almost occurred throughout Bali. Only some few people were still fond of watching the performing art. “Since the past 15 years, the condition has been sluggish. Possibly, the current entertainments available today have made people reluctant to see drama gong,” he said.

According to him, the current community preferred to see the art performance presenting entertainment with jokes and shorter duration.

One of the Balinese traditional performing arts currently favored was prembon. Its duration was only about 15-30 minutes, much shorter than that of drama gong reaching 2-3 hours. In terms of storyline, prembon was a blend of arja operetta and drama gong offering fresh entertaining jokes.

Meanwhile, the drama gong performance gave more highlights on moral messages such as rwa bhineda or basic dualism and palace-centered storyline.

According to Gus Topok, since people had more interest in the prembon show, a number of senior drama gong artists in Bangli moved the bow to prembon art. Other than him, several artists who moved the bow included Petruk, Mbok Cablek and Sangayu Tirtawati. “Mbok Cablek which used to be a lady in the drama gong is now playing the role as desak rai in the prembon,” he said.

Although it was not much different in terms of staging, but in terms of the art preservation, he recognized the existence of drama gong was quite alarming. Since it was rarely desirable, he worried about the existence of the art presented by about 13 players would only leave a name and could no longer be recognized by future generation. “To me, it does not matter, but in terms of preservation, our future generation may not be familiar with the drama gong again,” he added. GIANYAR - Other than better known for its Kecak Dance, Bona village located in Blahbatuh, Gianyar is also known to become the papyrus-made craft center in the 1980s. Virtually every household at Bona village deeply got involved in the woven papyrus craft activities.

Creatively, they make a woven papyrus craft in different products such as hats, baskets, bags and so on.

The products were very attractive to travelers coming to Bali.

Bona village had become a tourist destination, where it was visited by many travelers every day to look for woven handicraft souvenirs. Now, such an atmosphere only leaves in memory. Unfortunately, only some few crafters remain to survive and can be counted on fingers.

Development and global competitiveness have made home craft industry only leave in memory.

The woven papyrus craft of Bona villagers almost has been at the verge of extinction. Shops and stalls

formerly offering original woven papyrus handicrafts of Bona begin to disappear. Many people are no longer getting involved in the activity of weaving papyrus handicrafts attracting to travelers. In harmony with the loss of travelers to witness the Kecak Dance at Bona, the woven papyrus craft is also left by travelers.

To overcome this problem, many artisans finally shift their profession. They attempt to find out other jobs, while only some few remain to survive but make woven papyrus craft for ritual paraphernalia. One of them is ornament of penjor. Festive atmosphere can be seen along the main road section of Bona village on Galungan celebration.

A number of shops and stalls sell various ornaments of penjor made of papyrus installed on Galungan Day. Papyrus craftsmen at Bona village can only get blessing during religious holiday season. Amidst the current pragmatic lifestyle of the community, the demand for penjor ornaments tends to increase.

But behind it, there is something

missing for the papyrus craftsmen at Bona village.

One of the papyrus crafters of Bona, Gede Dharma Kusuma, recently admitted that many artisans formerly plaiting papyrus had taken another job. It was caused by travelers that were no longer made a visit to Bona. In addition, it was also difficult to obtain the papyrus raw materials. “Nowadays, the woven papyrus craft are dominated

by Chinese products. So, our people switch to the making of ritual paraphernalia such as penjor ornament,” he explained.

Though having shifted to the production of penjor paraphernalia, they are still constrained by the existence of raw materials such as papyrus. The papyrus is brought in Madura, Sumbawa and Sulawesi.

In Bali the papyrus is very rare. It is only obtained from Karangasem region, and the amount is very limited. At least, the arrival of raw material can reach a truck each month.

Penjor ornament products made from papyrus leaves are currently

in great demand by the public.

Other than being practical, the penjor ornament products made by Bona residents have been scattered

in several regions in Gianyar and Klungkung. Even, the products are also sent to other regions such as Lampung. (dar)

DENPASAR - Request for salary increase by legislators of the Bali House from IDR 24 million to IDR 50 million was not only criticized by some elements of society. Different opinion also occurred in the internal circle of the Bali House regarding the discourse of the salary increase. A number of legislators deplored the request for the salary increase. It implied if the legislators were whining and begging for the salary increase and it was very embarrassing.

“Please do not beg. When begging, it gives an impression that we do not know about the norms. If we consider it inadequate, it must be inadequate. But, if we consider it to outgo, yes it does. Never ask for the increase,” said a legislator of the Bali House having been elected for two periods, Utami Dwi Suryadi, Tuesday (Sep 16).

Regarding the salaries, this Democrat politician from Denpasar asked the legislators to adjust the amount of rights received to the existing rules. Thus, it was not necessary to request many things.

“Just comply with our normative rights. Everything has been set forth in the rules. It’s no need to ask for the increase. When the time goes up, it will go up. If we ask for but there is no way to increase, it remains the same, right?” said Utami.

Similar opinion was delivered by a new comer legislator of the Bali House, AA Ngurah Adhi Ardhana.

“We do not need to beg (for the raise.) We must comply with the rules,” said the PDI-P politician from Denpasar.

According to him, the legislators

should show off the performance and dedication first for the people who had entrusted their vote in the last legislative election. “If people think we are good and our achievement is appreciated and it’s decent (for a raise), please go on. Otherwise, please do not,” said Adhi doubling as the Secretary of the Indonesia Hotels and Restaurant Association (PHRI) of Denpasar Chapter.

He suggested if there were indeed rules on the performancebased salary, it could be better. “For example, when there is regulationdrafting, each legislator can give a study, so that it means it is based on performance. Asking for salary increase without activity is not good.

Personally, my salary is indeed earmarked for the community as promised during the campaign,” said Adhi while showing off the salary receipt worth IDR 26 million (before deducted for faction and the party).

He worried if a number of legislators continued to demand for salary increase, then the public criticism would continue to flow.

MANILA — The Philippines’ most active volcano has sent more huge lava fragments rolling down its slopes in an ongoing gentle eruption that has prompted authorities to evacuate thousands of villagers, officials said Wednesday. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has warned that a “hazardous eruption” of Mount Mayon, located in the eastern Philippines, is possible within weeks.

Increased restiveness was recorded overnight, including 270 incidents of lava fragments and super-hot boulders rolling down from Mayon’s crater — nearly four times the number recorded the previous day. Some reached the upper portion of a gully on the volcano’s southeastern side, indicating that the lava dome has breached that side of the crater. The number of lowfrequency volcanic earthquakes also increased.

Molten lava has accumulated at the top of the 2,460-meter (8,070-foot) volcano’s crater, creating a glow in the night sky that

sparked both awe and fear among spectators. “It’s already erupting, but not explosive,” said Renato Solidum, who heads the government’s volcano monitoring agency.

“Currently, the activity is just lava coming down. If there is an explosion, all sides of the volcano are threatened.”

Volcanologist Ed Laguerta said he saw huge glowing lava fragments and super-hot boulders rolling down from Mayon’s crater late Tuesday from as far as 12 kilometers (7 miles) away. “They are big because they can be seen from afar, and they splinter, so they could be car-sized,” he added.

Mount Mayon, a popular tourist site known for its near-perfect cone, lies in coconut-producing Albay province, about 340 kilometers (210 miles) southeast of Manila. The provincial disaster operations center reported Wednesday that nearly 24,000 people from villages within an 8-kilometer (5-mile) radius from the crater had been evacuated.

Mayor Herbie Aguas said his farming town of Santo Domingo, among the closest to the volcano,

has a frightening legacy from Mayon. The volcano nearly wiped out the municipality’s entire population in an 1897 eruption with pyroclastic flows — superheated gas and volcanic debris that race down the slopes at high speeds, vaporizing everything in their path.

“We are praying that it would not be the worst-case scenario,” Aguas said, adding that nearly 4,000 of the 40,000 residents in his town who live within a government-declared danger zone had started to evacuate to safer areas.

The volcano has erupted 50 times in the last 500 years, sometimes violently, endangering thousands of poor villagers who insist on living or farming in the danger zone.

Villagers living near the volcano have erected huge white crosses at the entrance of their neighborhoods, hoping they will protect them from harm.

On May 7, 2013, the volcano suddenly spewed ash, killing five climbers, including three Germans, who had ventured near the summit despite warnings of possible danger.

Silva was thrust into the Socialist Party’s presidential nomination when its candidate of choice, Eduardo Campos, died in a plane crash last month. Since then, her anti-establishment profile has propelled her to a neck-and-neck race with Rousseff.

Silva says she would re-emphasize ties to the United States and Europe, mostly by working to land trade deals with each. Such moves could cause tension with Mercosur, which prohibits members from making bilateral deals without the group’s approval. Under Silva, “there will be a change of direction in foreign policy,” her top adviser Mauricio Rands told supporters at an event unveiling her proposals. “Brazil should be the promoter of bilateral and regional (trade) agreements.”

It would be a sharp change in direction for the proverbial slumbering giant. Under Rousseff and her two-term predecessor Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Brazil has given

strong backing to leftist regional allies, such as Cuba, Venezuela, Ecuador and Bolivia.

Rousseff beamed in January as she stood beside Cuban President Raul Castro at a ribbon-cutting ceremony to open the first phase of an overhaul of the Port of Mariel, which the Communist nation expects will become the largest industrial port in the Caribbean.

It was the clout of her government that persuaded Mercosur to set aside fears about possible violation of its democracy rules and welcome Venezuela into membership.

At the same time, Rousseff was not afraid to ruffle Washington’s feathers by rejecting an invitation to make a formal state visit to the U.S. capital, the first extended to a Brazilian leader in two decades. WASHINGTON - The average American’s waistline has expanded over the past decade, adding about one inch (2.5 centimeters) of belly fat among the general public from 1999 to 2012, researchers said Tuesday.

The findings in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) are the first to show how the nation’s obesity epidemic has translated to added paunch in recent years, and the study said the trend toward larger waistlines was “significant.”

About one third of American adults -- 34.9 percent or 78.6 million people -- are considered obese, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a condition that raises the risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes.

Those figures are based on body mass index, a ratio calculated from weight and height. Recent research has shown no change in obesity rates according to BMI between 2003-2004 and 2011-2012.

But when CDC researcher Earl Ford and colleagues examined data about waist circumference from the same national health registries, dating from 1999-2012, they found

that there was a definite trend toward bigger bellies in the United States.

“Our analyses using data from the same surveys indicate that the prevalence of abdominal obesity is still increasing,” said the report.

For the purposes of the study, abdominal obesity was defined as a waist circumference greater than 40.2 inches (102 centimeters) in men and greater than 34.6 inches (88 centimeters) in women.

From a pool of nearly 33,000 men and nonpregnant women ages 20 years or older, “the overall ageadjusted average waist circumference increased progressively and

significantly, from 37.6 inches in 1999-2000 to 38.8 inches in 20112012,” said the study.

Men gained on average 0.8 inches and women added 1.5 inches, it said.

“The overall age-adjusted prevalence of abdominal obesity increased significantly from 46.4 percent in 1999-2000 to 54.2 percent in 2011-2012,” the study added.

Men and women saw “significant increases,” with male abdominal obesity increasing from 37 to 44 percent, and women going from 55 to 65 percent.

The gains were highest among African Americans and Mexican Americans, the researchers found.

LONDON - A simple urine test for the virus that causes cervical cancer could offer a less invasive and more acceptable alternative to the conventional cervical smear test, researchers said on Tuesday.

In a study comparing the accuracy of urine sample testing with smear testing conducted by a doctor, scientists from Britain and Spain found the results were good and said using the urine test to detect human papillomavirus (HPV) could lead to more women agreeing to be screened. “The detection of HPV in urine is non-invasive, easily accessible and acceptable to women, and a test with these qualities could considerably increase uptake,” the researchers said on Tuesday in thebmj.com, the online version of the British Medical Journal.

The study, which analysed 14 studies involving 1,443 sexually active women, was led by Neha Pathak of the women’s health research unit at Queen Mary University of London. Compared with cervical smear samples, urine HPV testing had an overall sensitivity -- the proportion of positives correctly identified -- of 87 percent, and a specificity -- the proportion of negatives correctly identified -- of 94 percent.

of 73 percent and a specificity of 98 percent compared with cervical samples. HPV is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections, with up to 80 percent of sexually active women infected at some point in their lives.

Infection with specific high risk strains of HPV can cause cervical cancer, which kills around 266,000 women a year globally, according to the World Health Organisation. By the far the vast majority of cervical cancer deaths are in poorer countries where access to screening and prevention methods is less widely available.

In a smear test, an instrument called a speculum is inserted into the vagina to allow access to the cervix and a brush is used to collect cells from the surface of the cervix.

In wealthier developed countries, cervical screening for HPV has been in place for many years and have been able to catch many potential cancer cases before they develop.

More recently, national immunisation programmes using vaccines from drugmakers Merck and GlaxoSmithKline have been launched to protect girls from HPV. Yet in developing nations, where some 445,000 cases were diagnosed and 230,000 women died of cervical cancer in 2012, infrastructures have not yet been established to run national screening programmes and HPV vaccination is still rare.

BANGLI - Other than being synonymous with Penelokan tourism and fresh tangerine of Kintamani, Bangli also has an adequately interesting historical potential to be known. The county offering cool atmosphere holds a number of ancient relics. One of them is the cliff temple located at Jehem Kaja hamlet, Jehem village, Tembuku subdistrict. The cliff temple in the form of relief is estimated to originate from the period of Buddha or around the eleventh century.

To reach the location of the cliff temple, visitors must first pass through a small, winding and damaged path in paddy field. Since it is located at the bottom of the cliff and adjacent to the streams of Melangit River, visitors must go down by stepping on dozens of stairs. Nevertheless, the fatigue after going down the stairs would be paid off with the wonderful charms of natural scenery around the site.

Custodian of the Jehem Cliff Temple, I Nengah Diarta, explained on Monday (Sep 15) that the cliff temple consisting of sandstone pieces was believed to have been first discovered by Jehem resident around March 1987. The temple was found near the streams of Melangit River, not far from the location of the current conservation.

“Two years before it was discovered, the cliff temple fell down due to landslide,” he explained.

By local residents, the cliff temple was then elevated and removed to the current location. Diarta said that before discovered, the Heritage

Preservation Agency (BPCG) of Gianyar had sent a letter to village authority in search for the existence of the temple. Unfortunately, the search did not work then. The cliff temple fell by itself due to a landslide. After discovered, the Gianyar Heritage Preservation Agency then placed it at the current location. The temple with the height of about 1.5 meters was then given a protective hall.

He added that a number of students from the Department of Archaeology having examined the cliff temple estimated if the temple was made in the eleventh century or Buddhist era. It was evidenced by the temple relief depicting the presence of stupas and two people standing beneath it. “It is according to the research made by the students. However, as per local mythology, this temple was made by the Lord Batur who had passed through the river and had a sojourn at the location,” he said.

Previously, the cliff temple was once consecrated on Anggarakasih Medangsia. But in later development, the ceremony was only organized by the family of Diarta based on his own belief.

Though having historical values, only some few travelers visited the location. According to Diarta, it probably happened as the location was quite remote and isolated.

Moreover, condition of the existing road was not worth passing through by vehicles. “So far, there are only some few travelers visiting the object. All this time, the visitors are dominated by students that will make a research,” he added. (ina)

She pointed out that the success of the general elections in Indonesia this year had also been acknowledged by several foreign representatives in Jakarta, marked by the acceptance of the Constitutional Court’s ruling over the dispute that arose between the election candidates.

“Foreign ambassadors have seen that the democratic machinery in Indonesia has functioned well,” she affirmed.

She emphasized that democracy had also continued to develop in the ASEAN region, which is apparent from the development of democracy in Myanmar that has become more open, despite a setback in Thailand.

Indonesia hopes that the rate of participation in the 7th BDF will remain high.

DENPASAR - Free Trade Agreement (FTA) is not only the institution facilitating businessmen in conducting international transactions in Asia. This agreement will facilitate the countries whose industrial technology and manufacturing have been developed to dominate the market potential of a weak country.

“If businesspeople in weak countries like Indonesia do not alert against the unfair competition, the concept of liberalism will become a powerful weapon to control national trade and markets,” said Chairman of the Indonesian Economists Association (ISEI) of Bali Chapter, Prof. Dr. Ketut Rahyuda, in Denpasar.

According to him, Indonesia would be a colony for the players of free market, chiefly in the matter of dominating the market share of automotive, telecommunications and other manufacturing industries. More seriously, this country can be said to have not been ready to face various free

trade agreements (FTA), “Most importantly, businessmen must be capable of backing themselves to survive in facing businessman from other countries.

FTA will become a threat for weak countries because they lose in competition against business people from strong countries,” he said.

He saw that Indonesia still improved itself in the matter of quality and product capacity in order to produce superior products with high competitiveness. Such an effort was not only intended to face Chinese businessman, but also those from India, Australia, New Zealand as well as the ASEAN

Economic Community.

“Even though Indonesia loses the domination of international trade, it is actually still able to be repaired because macroeconomically we have a competitive advantage and it is not owned by other competing countries,” he said.

According to him, Indonesia was rich in natural resources and human resources. But they would not be enough to guarantee the competitiveness if the human resources still had inferior business quality. Meanwhile, the richness in human resources in terms of quantity would be a huge market potential for strong countries to

conduct a transaction of goods or services.

“If the two resource advantages cannot be managed optimally, then our country will become a low class country that will persistently lose and be unable to compete against other countries in the world,” he said.

He mentioned the lack of infrastructure had an impact on the competitiveness tending to be more inefficient in the free trade.

Secondly, Indonesia was actually able to increase the efficiency of the national labor market. Large number of labor resources working in various business sectors would enable the human resources to be selected and made into professional workforce.

“Planned professionalism of the workforce will be able to increase the overall efficiency of various business sectors, grow job opportunities and create profes-

Similarly, the growth of small industry in Bali was also below the national growth of 6.17 percent.

“Although the foreign tourist visit increased, the purchasing power of domestic or local buyers remains very low, so that it had an impact on the decrease in production of small entrepreneurs. Even, this figure is smaller than the growth in the same quarter of 2013, amounting to 5.47 percent,” said the Head of Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Bali, in Denpasar, Panusunan Siregar, Tuesday (Sep 16).

According to him, contraction of the production growth generated by micro-small businesses in Bali was also affected by the increase in electricity tariff. Policy of the PLN resulted in the price increase in goods and services. “Similarly, the condition also affects the competitiveness of the industry as a whole,” he said.

He admitted that the growth of micro and small industries depended on the business environment created as a joint venture between the small businesses, government, and the entity of local community.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) of Badung, AA Ngurah Alit Wiraputra, hoped the banking agency in Bali could support the small businesses. “So far, bank only disburses loans at lower interest to big companies. Conversely, it will specify complicated requirements for small industries,” he said.

He mentioned that thousands of micro and small entrepreneurs had been untouched by banking services. Actually, based on the existing data, the explored market potential of microcredit was only 30 percent of the potential available reaching IDR 1,000 trillion.

“Apparently the micro-businesses get less attention, but have the toughness to withstand in the crisis. They run with restrictedness but keep on growing and contributing to the economy of Bali,” he said. (kmb27)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Leonardo DiCaprio named UN Messenger of Peace Associated Press

UNITED NATIONS — Leonardo DiCaprio’s movie roles have made him an international star, but his long and little-known commitment to preserving the global environment has led to his new role — as a U.N. Messenger of Peace.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced on Tuesday that the 39-year-old American actor will join 11 other prominent world figures who advocate on behalf of the U.N. as Messengers of Peace including Stevie Wonder, Michael Douglas, George Clooney, Brazilian author Paulo Coelho, primatologist Jane Goodall and conductor Daniel Barenboim.

Ban told a news conference that the Dicaprio “is not just one of the world’s leading actors” but he has “a longstanding commitment to environmental causes.”

He said DiCaprio will focus his U.N. role on climate change issues.

“His global stardom is the perfect match for this global challenge,” the

secretary-general told a news conference.

Ban said DiCaprio’s first act as a Messenger of Peace will be to address the climate summit he is holding next Tuesday on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly’s annual ministerial meeting, which 120 world leaders are expected to attend. Ban said the aim is to promote commitments to curb greenhouse gas emissions and pave the way for a global climate agreement in 2015.

DiCaprio established a foundation in 1998 with a mission to promote the Earth’s last wild places and build a more harmonious relationship between humanity and the natural world. According to the U.N., the foundation through

grants, media projects and public campaigns and appearances by DiCaprio, has brought attention and funds to three areas — protecting biodiversity, conservation of oceans and forests, and climate change.

DiCaprio said in a statement that he is honored to be a Messenger of Peace and support the secretary-general “in his efforts to address one of the most important issues we face as a global community.”

“I feel a moral obligation to speak out at this key moment in human history — it is a moment for action,” he said. “How we respond to the climate crisis in the coming years will likely determine the fate of humanity and our planet.”

DiCaprio gained international fame for his role in “Titanic” and has been nominated for five Academy Awards, including for “Aviator” and “The Wolf of Wall Street.” He won Golden Globes for his performance in “Aviator” and “The Wolf of Wall Street.”

LOS ANGELES - Hollywood hearthrob Ryan Gosling and his actress girlfriend Eva Mendes are proud parents of a baby daughter, media reports said Tuesday. Mendes, who began dating the Canadian actor in 2011, gave birth last Friday, according to US Weekly, which first reported the birth.

The couple had long declined to

confirm Mendes’ pregnancy. In July she laughed off rumors in an interview with talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, saying: “It’s so ridiculous.”

Celebrity bible People magazine also reported the birth, which was the first child for both actors. Their representatives did not respond to requests for comment.

Dozens of tourism businesses imposed with sanctions Bali Post

MANGUPURA - Waste management problem in the Badung tourism industry remains to need serious attention. Of the thousands of existing tourism businesses in Badung, not all of them have a waste management system complying with the requirements. In the area of Kuta and South Kuta, for example, a total of 29 businesses mostly consisting of tourism businesses have been imposed with sanctions because they did not meet the requirements in the waste management.

“We recognize that not all the tourism businesses are eligible in the waste management. Not long ago, we imposed administrative sanctions on 29 businesses in Kuta and Tanjung Benoa.

The violation was dominated by tourism industry whose waste management did not qualify,” said the Head of the Badung Environment Agency (BLH), I Ketut Sudarsana, accompanied by the Division Head of Supervision and Control I Nengah Sukarta.

He explained the administrative sanction imposed was in the form of written reprimand. It was imposed because the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) of the tourism business had a problem. The WWTP of tourism business did not work and had inadequate capacity so that the waste discharged directly ran into the drainage channel.

Sanction in the form of reprimand was an initial sanction for violators.

From the reports received, so far nearly 90 percent of the employers imposed with the sanctions would follow the requirements as specified in the written reprimand.

Nevertheless, his party asserted that if the next verification process found out that that business premises remained stubborn, the employers would be threatened with tougher sanctions.
