‘Empire,’ One Direction win at 17th Teen Choice Awards
NEW YORK — The 17th Teen Choice Awards threw its full support behind the hit series “Empire,” honored late “Furious 7” star Paul Walker and paid homage to a respected elder: Britney Spears. The two-hour teen celebration, broadcast live Sunday night, kicked off with a victory lap for the weekend boxoffice hit “Straight Outta Compton.” Ice Cube and the young stars of the N.W.A biopic, which earned an estimated $56.1 million over the weekend, welcomed the young crowd to Los Angeles’ Galen Center. Christopher “Ludacris” Bridges, the rapper and “Furious 7” co-star, was one of three hosts, alongside “Jane the Virgin” star Gina Rodriguez and actor Josh Peck. Bridges’ film, one of year’s biggest bigscreen hits, was one of the night’s top winners, winning best action movie and best actor in an action-adventure for the late Paul Walker. “Paul Walker is here in spirit with us,” said Vin Diesel, a star in the street racing franchise. He applauded a “special, special” teen in the crowd: Walker’s daughter Meadow.
The Teen Choice Awards spread awards across movies, music, TV, fashion, sports and digital media, celebrating the favorites — from Channing Tatum to Wiz Khalifa to Stephen Curry (all winners Sunday) — of one of media’s most powerful demographics. As a pop star, Spears was a regular at the Teen Choice Awards, collecting its trademark trophies — surfboards — many times over the years, including its version of a lifetime achievement award in 2009. On Sunday, Spears, her blonde hair partially dyed blue and purple, was honored for being a style icon. She dedicated the award to her sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James, and niece Lexie, who were in the audience. The Teen Choice Awards’ new reigning powerhouse, One Direction, landed eight awards, bringing their “lifetime” total to 23. The British boy band, cur-
rently on tour, accepted the awards in a taped video. The hip-hop drama “Empire” won breakout TV show and provided one of the show’s most memorable moments. While Jussie Smollett and Yazz performed “You’re So Beautiful,” a song from the series, the show’s Gabourey Sidibe made a surprise cameo, exuberantly dancing among the back-up dancers. Ellen DeGeneres won for best comedian. Adding a Teen Choice Award to her People’s Choice Award, DeGeneres requested awards from other age groups: the elderly and babies. Several awards went to “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1,” including best actor in a sci-fi or fantasy for Josh Hutcherson. He reflected on the end of the franchise, with this fall’s “Mockingjay, Part 2,” like a coming graduation. “’Hunger Games’ has been a huge part of my life for almost five years now. It’s coming to an end and it’s really sad,” said Hutcherson. “So if we want to cry together, we can do that because it breaks my heart.” (ap)
Disney drops hints to fans on ‘Finding Dory,’ ‘Toy Story 4’ ANAHEIM, California — Animals will walk upright, oceans will part, a forgetful fish will remember her family and toys will fall in love in Disney and Pixar Animation’s upcoming films. The studio previewed its animation slate Friday at the fan convention D23 Expo, with special appearances from voice actors including Ellen DeGeneres and Dwayne Johnson. John Lasseter, the chief creative officer of Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios, hosted the presentation, where he announced a Jack and the Beanstalk adaptation, “Gigantic,” and the title of their Dia de los Muertos film, “Coco.” It was also revealed that Shakira would be providing an original song and voicing a character in “Zootopia.” “Gigantic” director Nathan Greno said his film would be the definitive version of the fairy tale — with a few spins, including a 60-foot tall, 11year-old girl who Jack meets when he climbs up the beanstalk. “Frozen” songwriters Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, who penned the hit “Let It Go,” will be writing the songs. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was there to preview the South Pacific-set “Moana,” out next year, which follows a high spirited, 16-year-old princess who 2,000 years ago sails to a fabled island with the tattooed demi-god Maui (Johnson). Directors Ron Clements and John Musker and Johnson spoke about their extensive talks with anthropologists and archaeologists to ensure they accurately represented the area and how important the ocean is to local culture. Opetaia Foa’i, Grammy-winner Mark Mancina, and Tony-winner Lin-Manuel Miranda will be handling “Moana’s” music. Johnson said it has been his dream to be in an animated Disney movie. “It is my heritage, it is my culture. I am proudly half-Samoan and half-black,” he said. “I’m so deeply connected to this movie.” “Coco,” from director Lee Unkrich (“Toy Story 3”), will be about a 12-year-old boy living with his big family in Mexico who inadvertently sets off a life-altering chain of events. Pixar also released information about “Toy Story 4” and “Finding Dory,” a sequel to the 2003 film “Finding Nemo” in which the forgetful Dory (DeGeneres) endeavors to track down her family. (ap)

Relatives of passengers on the missing Trigana Air Service flight listen to a National Policies Disaster Victim Identification official at Sentani airport in Jayapura, Papua province, Indonesia, Monday, Aug. 17, 2015.
Searchers spot wreckage of Indonesian plane in rugged Papua
JAYAPURA — A search plane has spotted the wreckage of an Indonesian passenger plane that went missing with 54 people on board, smoke still billowing from it in a rugged area in eastern Papua province, rescue officials said Monday. There was no immediate word if there were any survivors from Sunday’s crash, which happened in bad weather over
Indonesia’s mountainous easternmost province. The Trigana Air Service plane was flying from Papua’s provincial capital, Jayapura, to the Papua city of Oksibil when it lost contact with Oksibil’s airport. Transportation Ministry spokesman Julius Barata said there was
no indication that the pilot had made a distress call. Officials said the wreckage was spotted about 12 kilometers (7 miles) from Oksibil. Henry Bambang Soelistyo, the chief of the National Search and Rescue Agency, said search and rescue teams were preparing to try to reach the crash site by air and foot. The ATR42-300 twin turboprop plane was carrying 49 passengers and five crew members on a scheduled 42-minute journey.
Five children, including two infants, were among the passengers. “Smoke was still billowing from the wreckage when it was spotted by a plane search,” said Soelistyo who is leading the rescue operation from Sentani Airport in Jayapura, adding that bad weather and rugged terrain were hampering efforts to reach the wreckage located in a mountainous area at an altitude of 2,600 meters (about 8,500 feet).
He said elite forces from the air force and army will build a helipad for evacuation purposes near the crash site.
