R. Kelly denied bond on federal charges including child porn

CHICAGO - A Chicago judge ordered R&B superstar R. Kelly to be held without bond on sweeping federal charges linked to child pornography and other crimes at a hearing Tuesday.

The musician who for decades has faced sexual abuse accusations was arrested last week on suspicion of having sex with five underage girls, recording some of it, and then attempting to hide the evidence.

According to local media federal prosecutors described the musician -- known for hits like “I Believe I Can Fly” -- as “an extreme danger to the community, especially to minor girls” in arguing that neither house arrest nor electronic monitoring would suffice.

“This risk of obstruction is real. This risk is ongoing. This risk is heightened by the defendant’s fame and power,” one prosecutor told Judge Harry Leinenweber, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

After being denied bond the artist born Robert Kelly pleaded not guilty to the 13-count indictment. In a separate blow Kelly, 52, also faces a five-count superseding indictment in New York on charges including racketeering, as well as coercing and transporting minors to have sex.

He has not yet been arraigned in the New

York case, and federal prosecutors have indicated he would eventually be brought there to face charges. Following the Chicago hearing Kelly’s lawyer Steve Greenberg said the artist is “obviously disappointed” to remain in custody, with the attorney dubbing his jailing “largely inhumane.”

“He’s absolutely not a flight risk,” Greenberg told journalists. “He’s in 24-hour-a-day solitary confinement... because that’s the safest place for them to house him.”

Prior to his arrest last week Kelly had been out on bond in connection with state felony charges of aggravated sexual assault in Chicago’s Cook County criminal court.

Kelly has a decades-long history of abuse allegations, especially of underage girls. In 1994 he wed his protegee Aaliyah, the late R&B star who was 15 at the time.

He began facing renewed scrutiny earlier this year upon the release of the docu-series “Surviving R. Kelly,” which on Tuesday nabbed an Emmy nomination for outstanding informational series or special. (afp)

Jokowi, Balakhrisnan talk about infrastructure, investment issues

BOGOR - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and Singaporean Foreign Affairs Minister Vivian Balakhrisnan talked about infrastructure, investment, and development of human resources at the Bogor Palace, here, on Wednesday.

“The President revealed his visions on last July 14. Of the five visions, at least three could be connected and offered for cooperation, namely, first on infrastructure, second on investment, and third on human resource development,” Foreign Affairs Minister Retno LP Marsudi told the press here on Wednesday following the meeting.

Retno Marsudi and Minister/State Secretary Pratikno flanked Jokowi during the meeting.

Discussion on human resource development focused on vocational schools and polytechnics.

Also, the existing human resource development cooperation will be stepped up, she remarked.

“Of course, to accelerate (the programs), one of the options is to organize training for trainers,” she said.

“The journey for the last year has been concrete. For instance, we have seen very obvious progress in Kendal Industrial Park. A polytechnic school for furniture was opened last January,” she said.

Also, there will be cooperation in aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul facilities to be set up in the Bintan, Batam and Karimun (BBK) regions to support Changi Airport. Balakhrisnan is on a working visit to Indonesia from July 16 to 18, 2019. (ant)

LOS ANGELES - The divisive final season of “Game of Thrones” smashed the record for most Primetime Emmy nominations by a drama series in a single year, earning a whopping 32 nods Tuesday.

HBO’s fantasy epic enraged fans with its bumpy conclusion but still trounced the competition to strengthen its iron grip on the small-screen equivalent of the Oscars.

“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” -- Amazon’s story of a 1950s housewife-turned-stand up comic -- was a distant second with 20 nominations.

“Thrones” is the most decorated

fictional show in the awards’ sevendecade history, and now has 161 nominations overall -- including 47 wins.

“For those who will be adding 2019 to their long list of nominations and or wins from other years -- it never gets old!” said Television Academy chairman and CEO Frank Scherma.

The show about families vying for the Iron Throne broke a 25-year drama series nominations record held by “NYPD Blue,” which earned 27 nods in 1994.

Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington were recognized in the lead acting categories, while eight other “Thrones” cast members swept the

board in the supporting and guest acting categories. The shortened eighth and last season also won a slew of technical awards.

“Thrones” capitalized on a threadbare year for drama, with several big hitters such as “The Handmaid’s Tale” missing from the main categories. The next highestplaced drama -- AMC’s “Breaking Bad” prequel “Better Call Saul” -- managed just eight nominations.

New clues on why women’s Alzheimer’s risk differs from men’s

LOS ANGELES - New research gives some biological clues to why women may be more likely than men to develop Alzheimer’s disease and how this most common form of dementia varies by sex.

At the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in Los Angeles on Tuesday, scientists offered evidence that the disease may spread differently in the brains of women than in men. Other researchers showed that several newly

identified genes seem related to the disease risk by sex.

Two thirds of Alzheimer’s cases in the U.S. are in women and “it’s not just because we live longer,” said Maria Carrillo, the association’s chief science officer. There’s also “a biological underpinning” for sex differences in the disease, she said.

Some previous studies suggest that women at any age are more likely than men to develop Alzheimer’s. Scientists also know that a gene called APOE-4 seems to raise risk more for women than for men in certain age groups.

At the same time, women with the disease in its early stages may go undiagnosed because they tend to do better on verbal tests than men, which masks Alzheimer’s damage.

The new studies add more evidence and potential explanations for suspected variations between how men and women develop the disease.

Vanderbilt University researchers found differences in how tau, a protein that forms tangles that destroy nerve cells, spreads in the brains of women compared to men. Using scans on 301 people with normal thinking skills and 161 others with mild impairment, they mapped where tau was deposited and correlated it with nerve networks — highways that brain signals follow.

They found that tau networks in women with mild impairment were more diffuse and spread out than in men, suggesting that more areas of the brain were affected.

It’s long been known that women do better on tests of verbal memory — skills like recalling words and lists.

University of California, San Diego, researchers found that women did better on these skills despite similar signs of early to moderate Alzheimer’s than men.

Using scans on more than 1,000 older adults, they found sex differences in how the brain uses sugar, its main energy source. Women metabolized sugar better, which may give them more ability to compensate for the damage from dementia and make them less likely to be diagnosed with it by tests that involve verbal skills.

“The female advantage might mask early signs of Alzheimer’s and delay diagnosis,” said study leader Erin Sundermann. “Women are able to sustain normal verbal performance longer,” partly because of better brain metabolism.

At the University of Miami, scientists analyzed genes in 30,000 people — half with Alzheimer’s, half without it — and found four that seem related to disease risk by sex.

“One confers risk in females and not males and three confer risk in males but not females,” said one study leader, Eden Martin.

Researchers don’t know yet exactly how these genes affect risk — or by how much.

“Some of these look like they’re tied to the immune system and we know there are differences between males and females” in how that works, said another study leader, Brian Kunkle.

Seven other genes seem to have different effect on risks in men versus women. The researchers have a National Institute on Aging grant to do an international study on nearly 100,000 people to try to validate and extend the results. (afp)

The Cleveland Clinic in Ohio says it has delivered the first baby in North America from a womb transplanted from a dead donor.

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Clinic in Ohio says it has delivered the first baby in North America from a womb transplanted from a dead donor.

Uterine transplants have enabled more than a dozen women to give birth, usually with wombs donated from a living donor such as a friend or a relative. In December, doctors in Brazil reported the world’s first birth using a deceased donor’s womb.

“Through this research, we

aim to make these extraordinary events ordinary for the women who choose this option,” transplant surgeon Andreas Tzakis said in a statement on the hospital’s website.

“We are grateful to the donor. Their generosity allowed our patient’s dream to come true and a new baby to be born.”

These types of transplants were pioneered in Sweden, where the first successful procedure was performed five years ago.

The Cleveland hospital said

Tuesday that the girl was born in June. The clinic has done five uterus transplants so far and three have been successful, with two women waiting to attempt pregnancy with new wombs.

The hospital said its program uses wombs from female donors who have died recently, as opposed to using a live donor “who would need to have major abdominal surgery to have her uterus removed.”

The increase is planned by the Bangli district government to improve the quality of development and tourist destinations. As at Yeh Sumbul village, Mendoyo, some school buildings were damaged such as the SDN 1 Yeh Sumbul elementary school and SMPN 5 Mendoyo junior high school at Yeh Sumbul. Based on information from Regional Disas-

ter Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of Jembrana the damages to SDN 1 Yeh Sumbul consisted of the falling ceiling of classroom. In addition to classroom of third grade and fifth grade, roof tiles also fell in office room of the school.

Meanwhile, SMPN 5 Mendoyo experienced cracks on the walls as happened to the office and natural science laboratory room. A number of students also panicked when the earthquake occurred and suffered injuries. I Ketut Semadi Yoga Yasa, for instance, had blisters. Moreover, another student, Ni Komang Ariani, was fainted in panic.

In the meantime, Head of the BPBD Jembrana, I Ketut Eko Susila AP, stated that from the sweeping and data collection conducted by the BPBD Jembrana, several buildings, both schools and homes were damaged. “SDN 1 Yeh Sumbul and SMPN 5 Mendoyo were equally affected. In addition, a unit of house at Kemoning hamlet, Manistutu, was also affected,” explained Eko Susila.

Regarding the plan to increase the levy rate, Made Gianyar admitted to have ordered the Acting Secretary of the Tourism Office to conduct a study including dissemination to tourism players, community and travel agencies. Mainly the dissemination to travel agencies, according to him, is quite important to be done from now on so that they can prepare to adjust the rates of-

fered to tourists. As planned, the increase in the levy rate of the Kintamani tourism will be applied starting early 2020.

“Later on, it will be governed in Regional Regulation. If the House of Representatives agree it can be increased starting on January 1, 2020. So, now we have time to disseminate to travel agencies. Hopefully, travel agencies that will market our destination can be well-prepared to make rate changes to tourists starting in 2020,” he explained.

According to Gianyar, the increase in the levy rate of Kintamani tourism to IDR 50,000 is reasonable and logical considering the tourist objects offered by Kintamani are extraordinary. Currently, Penelokan tourism objects have been fixed and arranged. In addition, the Kintamani tourism management body has also been formed. The road facilities to tourist destinations in the Batur Caldera have been widened and in the future will be arranged with the addition of street lighting. To continuously make improvements in the future, of course the Bangli district needs funds. “To arrange it, we need funds. To build we need income so that we will be able to fix it better when our income rises,” he explained.

This regent from Bunutin village, Kintamani, hoped that after the increase in the levy rates of Kintamani tourism has been applied, the UNESCO Global Geopark Batur Management Agency (BUGG) as the tourism management body of Kintamani can continuously make improvements and arrangements.

So, tourists can feel comfortable, homey and satisfied when visiting Kintamani. “We hope with the increase in levy rates, the development of the tourism objects can be more organized, and the charm will be better so that tourist will be satisfied when making a visit to Kintamani despite paying more,” he added. Earthquake affects Badung in 36 points, South Kuta mostly affected MANGUPURA - Massive earthquake shaking the Island of Bali on Tuesday (Jul. 16) indeed affected a number of buildings in Badung. A school in South Kuta, namely the SDN 1 Ungasan elementary school was damaged.

Moreover, due to the many falling roof tiles, three students and one teacher suffered a head injury.

According to the Principal of the SDN 1 Ungasan, Ni Made Asri, when the earthquake occurred, all students and teachers panicked. She claimed to be sad because, at that time, the first grade teacher was in classroom accompanying students.

Due to falling roof tiles, the teacher on behalf of Ni Nengah Sukensi, suffered head injuries. Meanwhile, the other three students also suffered injuries and were taken to the nearest health center.

She said the school established in 1934 currently has a total of 317 students. Although renovations have been made several times, she admitted the building condition of the school is quite old so it also very worrying. As a result of this condition, students are forced to be let go home earlier. As for the next day, students will also be temporarily given day-off while waiting for the decision of the Education Agency.

Acting Head of the Badung Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), I Wayan Wirya, stated the earthquake indeed had an impact at several points in Badung district.

From the data collected, a total of 36 points were affected. Of the 36 points, the most happened in the South Kuta sub-district namely 24 points, Kuta subdistrict (6), North Kuta subdistrict (3), Abiansemal subdistrict (2) as well as Mengwi subdistrict (1). “The most severe impact afflicted South Kuta subdistrict namely the SDN 1 Ungasan,

Melasti is meant to throw away all the great dirt of the macrocosm and microcosm. At the same time, they also invoked terrestrial stabilizer holy water or tirta pawitra in the middle of the ocean by means of pregembal bebangkit oblation by sacrificing goats, chickens and ducks to the middle of the sea. In the middle of the sea they got the holy water as revealed by chief of Padang Luwih customary village, I Ketut Oka Sudana.

When arriving at the temple, the chief of customary village said the holy water was welcomed by Rejang Dewa and Baris Gede dance where later on it was resumed with mungkah lawang or gate opening procession. Afterwards, sanctified effigies and holy water were enthroned in the pelik sari. Having been enthroned and passed through a procession of the congregation’s worship, the holy water was then distributed to customary villagers in order to get inner well-being.

Implementation of the melasti procession began at 07:00 from the Desa and Puseh Temple of Padang Luwih customary village towards Batu Bolong Beach. On the beach, in addition to carrying out melasti procession, it also presented animal sacrifices consisting of goat, duck and chicken.

Ethiopia faces showdown over push for new region

SYDNEY - Australia’s government on Wednesday called on China to allow an Australian child and his Uighur mother to leave the country, days after co-signing a letter denouncing Beijing’s treatment of the Muslim minority.

China has rounded up an estimated one million Uighurs and other mostly Muslim Turkic-speaking minorities into re-education camps in tightly controlled Xinjiang region, in the country’s northwest.

Sadam Abdusalam has campaigned for months for his Uighur wife, Nadila Wumaier, and their son Lutifeier, whom he has never met, to be allowed to come to Australia.

Australia’s embassy has “formally requested that the Chinese authorities allow Ms Wumaier and her son (who is an Australian citizen) to travel to Australia”, Foreign Minister Marise Payne said Wednesday.

The statement came after Abdusalam, an Australian citizen, shared his plight publicly for the first time during a documentary on the Xinjiang camps aired Monday on national broadcaster ABC. He told AFP that his wife was taken in for questioning by Chinese authorities the following day, but was later released.

Payne said that she was aware of the reports that Wumaier was inter-

rogated, but added that diplomats had no consular access rights as she was not an Australian citizen.

China’s foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said at a regular press briefing in Beijing on Wednesday that he had not seen the Australian statement.

“If the Australian side provides China with detailed relevant information through bilateral channels, China will provide the necessary assistance,” he said.

Canberra had initially denied citizenship to Lutifeier, who was born in Xinjiang in August 2017, but backtracked last year following a legal battle.

Abdusalam said he was “really happy” that Australia was taking action, but called on officials to do more.

“I’m going to keep trying to keep pressure on China and keep pressure on the Australian government,” he told AFP. “On 31 August he will be two years old,” Abdusalam said of Lutifeier.

“I would like to see my son before 31 August so we can celebrate his birthday as a family.”

Australian lawyers representing the family are urging Canberra to fast-track a visa for Wumaier.

HAWASSA - The green, blue and red flag of the Sidama people flutters defiantly above government buildings in a southern Ethiopian city where leaders are on the brink of declaring a breakaway region.

The Sidama say they plan to unilaterally declare their own federal state this week -- a move analysts say could inflame Ethiopia’s political crisis and lead to bloodshed.

In Hawassa, the would-be capital of the proposed state, motorbike riders blared their horns on Monday as young men ran through the streets waving flags and singing songs in anticipation of the announcement.

The feared showdown touches on the issue of autonomy -- the bedrock of a federal system designed to provide widespread ethnic self-rule in a hugely diverse country.

At present, Ethiopia is partitioned into nine semi-autonomous regions. The constitution requires

the government to organise a referendum for any ethnic group that wants to form a new entity.

The Sidama have agitated for years to leave the diverse Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region of which they are a part, and create their own state.

The dream gained fresh momentum after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed came to power last year promising wide-ranging reforms.

But his government has dithered on responding to the request for a referendum. Under the constitution, the vote must be held within a year -– a deadline that expires Thursday.

“If the government does not come back with a decision on this

by Thursday, we will enforce the

law by going to the zonal authorities,” Dukale Lamiso, president of the opposition Sidama Liberation Movement, told AFP. Abiy told lawmakers earlier this month that a unilateral declaration could force the central government to intervene.

The International Crisis Group (ICG) has warned that the federal government has “no good option.”

Preventing the formation of a state could spark violence, but granting it could trigger unrest between minorities within the region, the think tank says.

Taste of Fresh Drink Resembles to Balinese Snacks

Wells Fargo 2Q results beat Street estimates WASHINGTON - Wells Fargo reported better-than-expected earnings despite lower interest income in the second quarter, a potential concern for investors with a Fed interest rate cut likely on the horizon. Shares in the consumer banking giant slid 3%.

Wells Fargo & Co., still under growth restrictions by regulators after years of missteps and scandals, reported net interest income for the quarter of $12.1 billion. That’s down 4% from $12.5 billion in the second quarter last year and a 2% decline from the first quarter of 2019. Analysts surveyed by FactSet were expecting $12.2 billion in net interest income for the bank.

Net interest income carries extra importance for commercial banks like Wells Fargo, who rely less heavily on fee revenue than investment banks.

Like other banks, Wells Fargo has benefited from a rise in interest rates in recent years, somewhat offsetting the restrictions placed on the bank by regulators. But the days of rising rates appear to be coming to an end for now, as the Fed has recently signaled that it could cut rates at its meeting at the end of the month.

Overall, the San Francisco-based bank reported second-quarter net income rose 19% to $6.21 billion, or $1.30 per share, from $5.19 billion, or 98 cents per share, a year earlier.

The results topped Wall Street expectations. Analysts surveyed by FactSet expected earnings per share of $1.17.

The biggest U.S. mortgage lender posted revenue of $21.58 billion, essentially the same as last year’s second quarter, but beat forecasts of $20.9 billion.

Last year, the Federal Reserve capped the size of Wells Fargo’s assets after an assortment of scandals, beginning in 2016 with the uncovering of millions of fake checking accounts its employees opened to meet sales quotas. The Federal Reserve has not said when it will remove its restrictions on Wells’ business. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said earlier this year that the bank had more work to do to meet the Fed’s demands.

Further complicating matters, Wells is still without a permanent CEO after Tim Sloan abruptly resigned after what many considered a poor performance defending the bank in front of Congress in March.

Interim CEO Allen Parker said during a call with analysts that the bank won’t set targets beyond 2019 until a permanent chief executive is in place.

“We’re still at the point where the savings we’re achieving are not reaching the bottom line,” he said. “We anticipate that this could continue next year.”

Wells Fargo shares ended Tuesday down $1.41 at $45.30.

JPMorgan Chase posts $9.7 billion profit, beating estimates

NEW YORK - Banking giant JPMorgan Chase & Co. said Tuesday that its second quarter profits grew by 16% from a year ago, helped by lower taxes and the ability to charge businesses and consumers more to borrow money.

The nation’s largest bank by assets said Tuesday that it earned $9.65 billion, or $2.82 per share, up from a profit of $8.32 billion, or $2.29 per share, a year earlier.

The results beat the forecasts of analysts, who were looking for JPMorgan to earn $2.50 a share, according to FactSet. JPMorgan is one of a trio of banks that reported their results on Tuesday, the others being Wells Fargo and Goldman Sachs.

Citigroup reported its results on Monday, which disappointed investors and sent financial stocks broadly lower that day.

Both Goldman and Wells reported profits that beat analysts’ expectations.

Banks big and small have been benefiting from the Federal Reserve’s decision to raise interest rates steadily the last few years in response to a stronger U.S. economy.

However, that benefit may be coming to an end. The Fed is widely expected to cut interest rates, perhaps as soon as the end of this month, in response to slowing global economic growth.

“We continue to see positive momentum with the U.S. consumer - healthy confidence levels, solid job creation and rising wages - which are reflected in our consumer and community banking results,” Jamie

Dimon, JPMorgan Chase’s chief executive and chairman, said in a statement.

JPMorgan’s investment banking division did not fare as well, posting an 8% decline in pretax profits. Investment banking revenue was down 9% from a year earlier, as more companies sat on the sidelines due to economic uncertainty, resulting partly from U.S. trade disputes with China and other countries.

The bank reported that its return on common equity was 16%, compared with 14% a year ago. Return on common equity is a measurement on how well banks do with the assets they have on their balance sheet, and most big banks aim for a returns above 10%.

JPMorgan’s results were boosted by a one-time $768 million benefit related to the end of certain tax audits. Firm-wide revenue was $29.57 billion, more than the $28.84 billion analysts expected. (ap)

There is an interesting myth about the establishment of the temple belonging to the sad kahyangan in Klungkung which is related to the failure of Dukuh Jumpungan against Batara Toh Langkir, the ruler of mainland Bali.

Chairperson of the Ritual Committee, Putu Sujana, stated on Friday (Jan. 2) the piodalan in the sad kahyangan temple falls every six months and coincides with the Buda Kliwon Pahang. Local Hindus seemed enthusiastic about making prayers. Moreover, the Regent of Klungkung, Nyoman Suwirta, and his wife also came to say prayers in order that nature and its contents will always be calm and peaceful, in the midst of the current situation increasingly familiar with natural disasters.

This temple has the concept of nyegara gunung or sea-mountainward where there is a combination of land and sea in one form of beauty. At the Batu Medawu Temple, all the pilgrims performed prayers for three times, namely at the Segara, Taman and Penataran Temple.

This temple is supported by half the customary villagers, starting from the customary village of Kutampi Atas to the south and the east.

In addition to the pilgrims coming

from their own local community, the festival at the Batu Medawu Temple is also often attended by people from the Island of Bali.

Batu Medawu Temple is located at Suana village, just west of Semaya hamlet. As one of the sad kahyangan temples in Klungkung, this temple has a long history in its existence in Bali. The local temple priest explained the name Batu Medawu comes from the word perahu medah batu or a boat dividing rocks.

The origin is reinforced by the story of Nusa Penida Chronicle telling about the story of I Renggan, one of the grandchildren of Dukuh Jumpungan who wanted to conquer Bali with his magical boat.

In the story, I Renggan is believed to have the capability of making every land passed through by his boat will become an ocean.

“Bathara Toh Langkir knows such desire, so that he made I Renggan unable to control the boat and fall asleep. The boat was

stranded in Manggis, Karangasem and crashed into an island there. Finally, the island split and becomes small islands as we see now around Padangbai,” said Jero Mangku.

The priest added that due to his failure, he tried to return to Nusa Penida through the eastern part of the island. When trying to tether the boat, apparently it was not completely under control. Even, it passed to the beach and split the rock mound in the eastern part of the island. In short, the ruin of I Renggan’s boat was made a place of worship currently known as the Batu Medawu Temple.

The story is further strengthened by a symbol in the form of building resembling a boat’s rear part depicting a boat splitting a rock mound.

This building can be seen in the Batu Medawu Temple, precisely in the Segara Temple. Batu Medawu Temple serves as a holy place to ask for wisdom, unlike the Dalem Ped functioned to invoke strength. (kmb)

As holidays begin, UK looks out for forced marriages

LONDON - With summer holidays beginning in Britain this week, officials are redoubling efforts at the border to stop young people being dragged into forced marriages.

At a Heathrow Airport arrivals gate, an AFP reporter watched as officials from a special task force comprising

police, immigration agents and charity workers intercepted a family disembarking a flight from Bangalore, India.

A young woman in the group raised red flags because of bruises on her arm, while a 13-year-old girl appeared especially timid -- both indicators of potential coercion.

funeral and the bruising was due to a traffic accident.

But the officials also learned that the young woman’s parents had recently found her a fiance in their home state of Kerala, and that he, too, may travel to Britain.

Trained task force officers took the woman aside to brief her on her rights and to press upon her that forced marriage is illegal in Britain.

“She’s (now) aware of consent, and that she can withdraw her consent at any time,” Detective Sergeant Kate Bridger of the Metropolitan Police told her team after they questioned 72 of the 250 people on the Air India flight.

- ‘No winners here’ Britain outlawed forced marriage in 2014, with a maximum jail term of seven years for offenders.

Figures from the interior ministry’s forced marriage unit show 1,764 reported cases in 2018 -- a 47 percent increase from the year before.

The reported cases are thought to be the tip of the iceberg.

Most cases involve Britons being married against their will overseas, mainly in Bangladesh, India and Pakistan.

So the task force targeted passengers on flights to and from the Indian sub-continent as well as Middle East hub airports.

“It’s not just a South Asian problem... it cuts across lots of different cultures and communities too,” task force member detective sergeant Trudy Gittins told AFP. Men were also affected, she said, as well as members of the LGBT community -- with cases of gay men forced to marry members of the opposite sex by their conservative families.

Cases in Britain have ranged from a two-year-old promised in a religious ceremony to marry into another family, to an 80-year-old Alzheimer’s sufferer whose carer forced him into a marriage to inherit his estate.

A third of victims are younger than 18, and three-quarters are girls or women.

West Midlands Police last year secured the first conviction in England for forced marriage, with a woman jailed after her 13-year-old daughter was raped by her “fiance”, a relative in Pakistan. “There are no winners here -- this was her mum,” said Gittins.

Senior officers said the emphasis of this week’s operation was on prevention rather than prosecution.

“Our focus is not to criminalise parents or members of the extended family,” said the Met’s acting chief superintendent Parm Sandhu.

Germany makes measles vaccination compulsory for children BERLIN - Germany will make childhood measles vaccinations mandatory from March 2020, aiming to wipe out the resurgent and potentially deadly disease, Chancellor Angela Merkel’s cabinet decided Wednesday.

Children will only be admitted to kindergarten or school if they have had the jabs, and vaccinations will also be compulsory for staff in day-care centres, educational institutions, medical facilities and refugee shelters.

“We want to protect as many children as possible from a measles infection,” said Health Minister Jens Spahn, who is aiming for at least 95 percent coverage.

Violations will lead to fines of up to 2,500 euros ($2,800) under the bill that is expected to pass easily through the Bundestag lower house of parliament.

Germany’s paediatricians’ association has long demanded mandatory childhood vaccinations against measles and a

range of other diseases.

The UN World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that global efforts to increase immunisation coverage against deadly diseases are stagnating.

Last year, 350,000 cases of measles were reported worldwide, more than double the number for 2017.

And they increased fourfold globally in the first quarter of 2019 compared to the same period last year, according to WHO. Germany recorded 543 cases last year, and hundreds so far this year.

The resurgence of the disease in some countries has been blamed on the so-called “anti-vax” movement, which is largely based on a 1998 publication linking the measles vaccine and autism that has since been debunked. (afp)

Jokowi-Prabowo meeting is emblematic of Indonesian unity

A meeting between President-elect Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and losing presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto, held on July 13, marked the first time ever between the duo following the election period.

Jokowi took his former challenger for a trip aboard a Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) train from the Lebak Bulus Station for lunch together at a restaurant in FX Sudirman, Senayan, South Jakarta.

“Dear my fellow Indonesians, my meeting with Mr Prabowo Subianto this morning was a meeting between friends, a meeting of brothers,” Jokowi stated at the Senayan MRT Station, Jakarta, after the meeting.

Jokowi noted that the meeting had been planned since long but kept getting delayed due to their busy schedules. “(This meeting is) what we have actually planned for a long time, but Mr Prabowo is also busy, often going back and forth abroad. I too was busy with several items on my agenda of visits to several regions that led to the meeting being delayed,” he explained.

“Thank God, this morning, we could meet and take a ride aboard the MRT because I know Mr Prabowo has never traveled

by MRT,” Jokowi remarked.

The meeting of the two figures was held at the MRT station on Saturday morning. They met at around 10 a.m. local time and shook hands. Before heading to the train platform, they hugged each other and waved out to the public.

Jokowi and Prabowo boarded the train for a ride, lasting some 15 minutes, to the Senayan MRT station adjacent to FX Mall, as they had been scheduled to have lunch together at one of the restaurants. During the meeting, Prabowo congratulated Jokowi as Indonesia’s president-elect for the 2019-2024 period.

“Some might mull over why I have not congratulated Mr Jokowi as president, but I, in fact, just wanted to congratulate him in person and face-to-face,” Prabowo remarked while shaking hands with Jokowi and hugging him at the Senayan MRT Station.

Prabowo and his running mate Sandiaga Uno had challenged Jokowi’s re-election bid in April by rallying four political parties to support his run against Jokowi’s coalition of nine parties.

Jokowi pointed to the competition also being tough for supporters of both candidates. Hence, the current head of state harbors hopes of the meeting with Prabowo being able to reunite the nation that was divided by different political choices.

“I am immensely grateful for the arrangements, so we can meet with Mr Prabowo this morning, and we also hope that the supporters would follow suit, as we are united. There is no longer (presidential candidate) number 01 or number 02,” Jokowi

concluded.

Wearing similar white shirts, Prabowo admitted that the meeting, held on the country’s first MRT line that began operations in March, was Jokowi’s idea.

“I have yet to take an MRT ride, so thank you, Mr President, for taking me. We are proud that Indonesia finally has the MRT that can cater to the interests of the people,” Prabowo stated.

The meeting between Jokowi and Prabowo took place 15 days after the Constitutional Court had rejected the latter’s lawsuit challenging his rival’s victory in the April presidential election.

The General Elections Commission (KPU) named Jokowi the winner of the presidential election by securing 55.5 percent of the vote, or over 85 million ballots, while Prabowo received over 68 million votes, or 44.5 percent of the ballots. Prabowo then challenged the final results in the Constitutional Court, alleging massive fraud during the election. The court rejected Prabowo’s claim and upheld Jokowi’s victory.

The meeting held significance in reuniting the people, who had been divided based on their different political choices during the election. Many have eagerly looked forward to the Saturday meeting between Prabowo and Jokowi as a moment for reconciliation after the bitterly contested presidential election. They also lauded the reconciliation meeting between Jokowi and Prabowo.

According to an analysis study through social media from Indonesia Indicator (I2), 56 thousand conversations centered around Jokowi, while Prabowo featured in 101,027. A plethora of emotions were mirrored in those conversations referring to Prabowo.

“This was caused by the talk on reconciliation is still an issue for Prabowo’s supporters on (Twitter’s) timeline,” Director of Communication I2 Rustika Herlambang stated in Jakarta on Sunday.

Prior to the meeting, cabinet secretary and one of Jokowi’s political aides, Pramono Anung, had hinted at this meeting through his Twitter account.

“I hope today would serve as a reminder of a democratic process that has become more mature than ever,” he tweeted through his account @pramonoanung.

“Hopefully, this meeting will make Indonesia fair, stronger, and more advanced and prosperous #pertemuan #indonesia #AlFatihah,” he stated.

Bystanders at the same station as Jokowi and Prabowo on Saturday also voiced their opinions.

“They took an MRT ride, I saw them. Such a relieving view,” Alip, 21, a resident of Bogor, West Java, noted in response to being questioned at the Senayan area, South Jakarta.

Rori, 37, a citizen from Kebon Jeruk, West Jakarta, also praised

the meeting to placate tensions after the election period.

“The election has gone by, so the political elites need to stop feuding. Let Jokowi do his duty as a president,” Rori stated while he along with his family hung out in Senayan.

In addition to the people’s reactions to the meeting between Jokowi and Prabowo, supporters of both camps, comprising millennials and youths, held their own event as a shout-out to Indonesian unity on Saturday evening.

The collaboration was represented by Jokowi’s and Prabowo’s millennial supporters called “KitaSatu” and “Gerakan Milenial Indonesia”, respectively. They held a forum named “Young Penting Indonesia” bearing the theme of “Future Leader Is Coming” at one of the malls in Kemang, South Jakarta.

The political reconciliation, showcased through the meeting between Jokowi and Prabowo on last Saturday, is expected to end the divide between people due to the election. Regardless of the political differences among people, it is now time to unite and work together to transform Indonesia into a more developed and prosperous nation. (ant)

BPBD confirms 971 houses damaged in Halmahera 7.2-magnitude earthquake

TERNATE - North Maluku Province’s Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) reported here on Wednesday that the recent strong earthquake that rocked South Halmahera District claimed six lives, displaced 3,104 residents, and caused serious damage to 971 houses.

The damaged houses spread across various villages, including Ranga-Ranga, Gane, Samat, Gaimu, Kuwo, Liaro, Tomara, Tanjung Jare, and Lemo-Lemo. A total of 51 people also suffered injuries following the quake that had hit the district on July 14, the agency’s secretary, Ali Yau, confirmed.

Two of the wounded victims of the 7.2-magnitude earthquake, whose epicenter was located 65 kilometers (km) northwest of Labuha, at a depth of 10 km below sea level, suffered grave injuries, he remarked, adding that several houses of worship, including two mosques and a church, got damaged.

As many as 3,104 residents are taking refuge in 15 places, he stated. In assisting those in disaster-hit areas, Head of the South Halmahera Disaster Mitigation Agency Jalil Efendi earlier confirmed that the agency had declared an emergency response period on July 15-21.

The district government has set up public kitchens to cater to 1,104 refugees in nine disaster-hit areas.

In distributing humanitarian aid to the needy, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has also dispatched an MI-8 helicopter. According to the agency’s spokesman, Agus Wibowo, logistics aid, including tents and other necessities, for evacuees poured in during the emergency response period.

“Other aid, in the form of tents, had also been delivered aboard a Hercules aircraft on Tuesday night,” acting chief of the agency’s data and information center and public relations, Agus Wibowo,

noted in a press statement released on Wednesday.

The BNPB had earlier also dispatched a tanker with relief aid to South Halmahera. The aid was later loaded onto small ships to reach the affected areas.

Situated on the Pacific ring of fire, Indonesia is prone to natural disasters, including earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

During 2018, Indonesia was hit by a total of 11,577 earthquakes, including several of them that caused serious casualties, with the number significantly increasing as compared to that in 2017, Head of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Dwikorita Karnawati remarked.

Several of the earthquake-related events that occurred in Indonesia last year were never witnessed before, such as the liquefaction in Palu; a tsunami that struck before the issuance of a warning in Palu, and the Sunda Strait Tsunami, she pointed out. (ant)

Malaysia’s ‘Phoenix’: hijab-wearing wrestler breaking barriers

KUALA LUMPUR - A hijabwearing, diminutive Malaysian wrestler known as “Phoenix” cuts an unusual figure in the ring, a female Muslim fighter taking on hulking opponents in a maledominated world.

Dressed in flame-patterned trousers, a black and orange hijab and top, Nor Diana uses sophisticated moves to throw and pin down her larger rivals in front of hundreds of cheering spectators. Standing just 155 centimetres (five foot, one inch) tall and weighing 43 kilograms (six stone, 10 pounds), her speed and agility make her a match for almost any opponent.

And far from being criticised by

conservatives for throwing herself into wrestling, the 19-year-old has become a hit on social media and spurred the interest of other headscarf-wearing women.

“Even though I am Muslim, and I wear the hijab, nothing can stop me from doing what I love,” she said in the ring after winning a recent fight.

She takes part in local outfit Malaysia Pro Wrestling (MyPW), which has similarities with hugely popular World Wrestling Entertainment from the United States.

Like WWE, the Malaysian version is as much theatre as sport, as participants compete against one another with matches ending in a

pre-determined outcome.

Nor Diana, a pseudonym as she prefers not to reveal her true identity, seems an unlikely wrestler -- outside the ring, she is shy and soft-spoken, and her day job is working in a hospital.

But when she puts on her wrestling gear, she transforms into the fearsome Phoenix.

“As Phoenix, I’m a totally different person. She may be small, but she can do things that people can’t imagine,” Nor Diana told AFP at a wrestling gym in Puchong, outside Kuala Lumpur.

Arsenal tops Rapids 3-0 in friendly match COMMERCE CITY — James Olayinka had a goal and an assist to lead Arsenal past the Major League Soccer’s Colorado Rapids 3-0 in a friendly on Monday night.

Olayinka’s sizzling right-footed strike in the 29th minute came from just outside the box as he scored into the upperright corner of the net to give the English Premier League team a 2-0 lead.

Olayinka assisted on Arsenal’s opening score. He pushed the ball into the box where Bukayo Saka found it and lifted it into the net in the 13th minute. The third score came just after halftime from Gabriel Martinelli in the 61st minute.

It was Martinelli’s debut after joining Arsenal from Ituano earlier in the month.

“I’m really pleased with our effort,” Colorado Rapids interim coach Conor Casey said. “We had chances but they’re a great team at the end of the day it was just about the a t -

mosphere.”

In front of a near sellout — many of them cheering the visitors — Arsenal controlled the match.

“The first match was good to use different young players,” Arsenal manager Unai Emery said. “To give them chances to show their quality, commitment and the idea to help the team. The atmosphere here was perfect, a lot of Arsenal supporters and we had a good day here.”

This was the first preseason match for Arsenal ahead of the 2019-20 season as they embark on a three-game exhibition tour. Monday’s match was the only one against an MLS club.

Olayinka’s score was huge sign for the club. The 18-yearold developed through Arsenal’s academy and signed with the first team in January. He has yet to play in the Premier League.

He represents a big hope as Arsenal finished fifth in the EPL last season.

Rapids goalkeeper Tim Howard was kept out of the game as the club limits his minutes in his final season. Howard spent the second half doing color commentary on local radio. Recently, Howard has done commentary for TNT during its Champions League coverage.

“It’s important, this relationship is massive for our club and fan base,” Howard said on the broadcast about the game.

“The fact that we can attract this is massive.”

While the third-year Rapids goalie is new to broadcasting, he said of his younger teammates playing, “The experience of playing against such a talented side is eye opening.”

STAR POWER Arsenal stars Alexandre Lacazette, Mesut Özil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang entered the game in the 78th minute. Each got rousing ovations and drew reactions from the crowd in the final 10 minutes when generating opportunities.

The Rapids only played six regulars the entire 90 minutes as they played an MLS match on Saturday.

Seedorf sacked as Cameroon coach

The Cameroon Football Federation sacked coach Clarence Seedorf and assistant Patrick Kluivert on Tuesday, the pair paying the price for the defending champions’ last 16 exit at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Cameroon crashed out 3-2 to Nigeria last Saturday, an exit the federation described as “premature” in its statement.

Former Dutch international Seedorf won just three of nine competitive games after taking over the Indomitable Lions alongside Kluivert last August.

The federation are now hunting

for a manager to prepare the national side for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations which they are hosting.

De Ligt arrives in Turin to complete Juventus signing

Casillas to join Porto staff during heart attack recovery Iker Casillas will join the Porto staff while he recovers from the heart attack he suffered two months ago, the Spanish goalkeeper and Portuguese club announced on Monday.

In a statement, Porto said Casillas will be the “liason between the players, coach and management”, a role that could be extended to other functions within the club.

“I’m going to do something different

from what I used to do, which was to be on the field. I will try to do my best to help my teammates,” the 38-year-old told the club website.

The former Real Madrid and Spain captain underwent emergency surgery on May 1 after suffering a heart attack during training. He left the hospital five days later, admitting that his professional future was uncertain.

His agent Carlo Cutropia told sports daily O Jogo that he cannot yet resume training and will have to wait for doctors to say whether he can return within “one, two or three months”.

Casillas joined Porto in 2015 and extended his contract by one year in March.

Club president Jorge Pinto da Costa has said he wants Casillas to be playing for Porto at 40.

He has 167 Spain caps, winning the 2010 World Cup and two European Championships, and also played more than 700 games for Real Madrid, where he won five La Liga titles, three Champions League and a handful of other major trophies.

Club president Jorge Pinto da Costa has said he wants Casillas to be playing for Porto at 40.

Malaysia’s ‘Phoenix’: hijab-wearing wrestler breaking barriers

KUALA LUMPUR - A hijabwearing, diminutive Malaysian wrestler known as “Phoenix” cuts an unusual figure in the ring, a female Muslim fighter taking on hulking opponents in a maledominated world.

Dressed in flame-patterned trousers, a black and orange hijab and top, Nor Diana uses sophisticated moves to throw and pin down her larger rivals in front of hundreds of cheering spectators. Standing just 155 centimetres (five foot, one inch) tall and weighing 43 kilograms (six stone, 10 pounds), her speed and agility make her a match for almost any opponent.

And far from being criticised by

conservatives for throwing herself into wrestling, the 19-year-old has become a hit on social media and spurred the interest of other headscarf-wearing women.

“Even though I am Muslim, and I wear the hijab, nothing can stop me from doing what I love,” she said in the ring after winning a recent fight.

She takes part in local outfit Malaysia Pro Wrestling (MyPW), which has similarities with hugely popular World Wrestling Entertainment from the United States.

Like WWE, the Malaysian version is as much theatre as sport, as participants compete against one another with matches ending in a

pre-determined outcome.

Nor Diana, a pseudonym as she prefers not to reveal her true identity, seems an unlikely wrestler -- outside the ring, she is shy and soft-spoken, and her day job is working in a hospital.

But when she puts on her wrestling gear, she transforms into the fearsome Phoenix.

“As Phoenix, I’m a totally different person. She may be small, but she can do things that people can’t imagine,” Nor Diana told AFP at a wrestling gym in Puchong, outside Kuala Lumpur.

As holidays begin, UK looks out for forced marriages

LONDON - With summer holidays beginning in Britain this week, officials are redoubling efforts at the border to stop young people being dragged into forced marriages.

At a Heathrow Airport arrivals gate, an AFP reporter watched as officials from a special task force comprising

police, immigration agents and charity workers intercepted a family disembarking a flight from Bangalore, India.

A young woman in the group raised red flags because of bruises on her arm, while a 13-year-old girl appeared especially timid -- both indicators of potential coercion.

funeral and the bruising was due to a traffic accident.

But the officials also learned that the young woman’s parents had recently found her a fiance in their home state of Kerala, and that he, too, may travel to Britain.

Trained task force officers took the woman aside to brief her on her rights and to press upon her that forced marriage is illegal in Britain.

“She’s (now) aware of consent, and that she can withdraw her consent at any time,” Detective Sergeant Kate Bridger of the Metropolitan Police told her team after they questioned 72 of the 250 people on the Air India flight.

- ‘No winners here’ Britain outlawed forced marriage in 2014, with a maximum jail term of seven years for offenders.

Figures from the interior ministry’s forced marriage unit show 1,764 reported cases in 2018 -- a 47 percent increase from the year before.

The reported cases are thought to be the tip of the iceberg.

Most cases involve Britons being married against their will overseas, mainly in Bangladesh, India and Pakistan.

So the task force targeted passengers on flights to and from the Indian sub-continent as well as Middle East hub airports.

“It’s not just a South Asian problem... it cuts across lots of different cultures and communities too,” task force member detective sergeant Trudy Gittins told AFP. Men were also affected, she said, as well as members of the LGBT community -- with cases of gay men forced to marry members of the opposite sex by their conservative families.

Cases in Britain have ranged from a two-year-old promised in a religious ceremony to marry into another family, to an 80-year-old Alzheimer’s sufferer whose carer forced him into a marriage to inherit his estate.

A third of victims are younger than 18, and three-quarters are girls or women.

West Midlands Police last year secured the first conviction in England for forced marriage, with a woman jailed after her 13-year-old daughter was raped by her “fiance”, a relative in Pakistan. “There are no winners here -- this was her mum,” said Gittins.

Senior officers said the emphasis of this week’s operation was on prevention rather than prosecution.

“Our focus is not to criminalise parents or members of the extended family,” said the Met’s acting chief superintendent Parm Sandhu.

Germany makes measles vaccination compulsory for children BERLIN - Germany will make childhood measles vaccinations mandatory from March 2020, aiming to wipe out the resurgent and potentially deadly disease, Chancellor Angela Merkel’s cabinet decided Wednesday.

Children will only be admitted to kindergarten or school if they have had the jabs, and vaccinations will also be compulsory for staff in day-care centres, educational institutions, medical facilities and refugee shelters.

“We want to protect as many children as possible from a measles infection,” said Health Minister Jens Spahn, who is aiming for at least 95 percent coverage.

Violations will lead to fines of up to 2,500 euros ($2,800) under the bill that is expected to pass easily through the Bundestag lower house of parliament.

Germany’s paediatricians’ association has long demanded mandatory childhood vaccinations against measles and a

range of other diseases.

The UN World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that global efforts to increase immunisation coverage against deadly diseases are stagnating.

Last year, 350,000 cases of measles were reported worldwide, more than double the number for 2017.

And they increased fourfold globally in the first quarter of 2019 compared to the same period last year, according to WHO. Germany recorded 543 cases last year, and hundreds so far this year.

The resurgence of the disease in some countries has been blamed on the so-called “anti-vax” movement, which is largely based on a 1998 publication linking the measles vaccine and autism that has since been debunked. (afp)

Jokowi-Prabowo meeting is emblematic of Indonesian unity

A meeting between President-elect Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and losing presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto, held on July 13, marked the first time ever between the duo following the election period.

Jokowi took his former challenger for a trip aboard a Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) train from the Lebak Bulus Station for lunch together at a restaurant in FX Sudirman, Senayan, South Jakarta.

“Dear my fellow Indonesians, my meeting with Mr Prabowo Subianto this morning was a meeting between friends, a meeting of brothers,” Jokowi stated at the Senayan MRT Station, Jakarta, after the meeting.

Jokowi noted that the meeting had been planned since long but kept getting delayed due to their busy schedules. “(This meeting is) what we have actually planned for a long time, but Mr Prabowo is also busy, often going back and forth abroad. I too was busy with several items on my agenda of visits to several regions that led to the meeting being delayed,” he explained.

“Thank God, this morning, we could meet and take a ride aboard the MRT because I know Mr Prabowo has never traveled

by MRT,” Jokowi remarked.

The meeting of the two figures was held at the MRT station on Saturday morning. They met at around 10 a.m. local time and shook hands. Before heading to the train platform, they hugged each other and waved out to the public.

Jokowi and Prabowo boarded the train for a ride, lasting some 15 minutes, to the Senayan MRT station adjacent to FX Mall, as they had been scheduled to have lunch together at one of the restaurants. During the meeting, Prabowo congratulated Jokowi as Indonesia’s president-elect for the 2019-2024 period.

“Some might mull over why I have not congratulated Mr Jokowi as president, but I, in fact, just wanted to congratulate him in person and face-to-face,” Prabowo remarked while shaking hands with Jokowi and hugging him at the Senayan MRT Station.

Prabowo and his running mate Sandiaga Uno had challenged Jokowi’s re-election bid in April by rallying four political parties to support his run against Jokowi’s coalition of nine parties.

Jokowi pointed to the competition also being tough for supporters of both candidates. Hence, the current head of state harbors hopes of the meeting with Prabowo being able to reunite the nation that was divided by different political choices.

“I am immensely grateful for the arrangements, so we can meet with Mr Prabowo this morning, and we also hope that the supporters would follow suit, as we are united. There is no longer (presidential candidate) number 01 or number 02,” Jokowi

concluded.

Wearing similar white shirts, Prabowo admitted that the meeting, held on the country’s first MRT line that began operations in March, was Jokowi’s idea.

“I have yet to take an MRT ride, so thank you, Mr President, for taking me. We are proud that Indonesia finally has the MRT that can cater to the interests of the people,” Prabowo stated.

The meeting between Jokowi and Prabowo took place 15 days after the Constitutional Court had rejected the latter’s lawsuit challenging his rival’s victory in the April presidential election.

The General Elections Commission (KPU) named Jokowi the winner of the presidential election by securing 55.5 percent of the vote, or over 85 million ballots, while Prabowo received over 68 million votes, or 44.5 percent of the ballots. Prabowo then challenged the final results in the Constitutional Court, alleging massive fraud during the election. The court rejected Prabowo’s claim and upheld Jokowi’s victory.

The meeting held significance in reuniting the people, who had been divided based on their different political choices during the election. Many have eagerly looked forward to the Saturday meeting between Prabowo and Jokowi as a moment for reconciliation after the bitterly contested presidential election. They also lauded the reconciliation meeting between Jokowi and Prabowo.

According to an analysis study through social media from Indonesia Indicator (I2), 56 thousand conversations centered around Jokowi, while Prabowo featured in 101,027. A plethora of emotions were mirrored in those conversations referring to Prabowo.

“This was caused by the talk on reconciliation is still an issue for Prabowo’s supporters on (Twitter’s) timeline,” Director of Communication I2 Rustika Herlambang stated in Jakarta on Sunday.

Prior to the meeting, cabinet secretary and one of Jokowi’s political aides, Pramono Anung, had hinted at this meeting through his Twitter account.

“I hope today would serve as a reminder of a democratic process that has become more mature than ever,” he tweeted through his account @pramonoanung.

“Hopefully, this meeting will make Indonesia fair, stronger, and more advanced and prosperous #pertemuan #indonesia #AlFatihah,” he stated.

Bystanders at the same station as Jokowi and Prabowo on Saturday also voiced their opinions.

“They took an MRT ride, I saw them. Such a relieving view,” Alip, 21, a resident of Bogor, West Java, noted in response to being questioned at the Senayan area, South Jakarta.

Rori, 37, a citizen from Kebon Jeruk, West Jakarta, also praised

the meeting to placate tensions after the election period.

“The election has gone by, so the political elites need to stop feuding. Let Jokowi do his duty as a president,” Rori stated while he along with his family hung out in Senayan.

In addition to the people’s reactions to the meeting between Jokowi and Prabowo, supporters of both camps, comprising millennials and youths, held their own event as a shout-out to Indonesian unity on Saturday evening.

The collaboration was represented by Jokowi’s and Prabowo’s millennial supporters called “KitaSatu” and “Gerakan Milenial Indonesia”, respectively. They held a forum named “Young Penting Indonesia” bearing the theme of “Future Leader Is Coming” at one of the malls in Kemang, South Jakarta.

The political reconciliation, showcased through the meeting between Jokowi and Prabowo on last Saturday, is expected to end the divide between people due to the election. Regardless of the political differences among people, it is now time to unite and work together to transform Indonesia into a more developed and prosperous nation. (ant)

BPBD confirms 971 houses damaged in Halmahera 7.2-magnitude earthquake

Germany will make childhood measles vaccinations mandatory from March 2020, aiming to wipe out the resurgent and potentially deadly disease.

TERNATE - North Maluku Province’s Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) reported here on Wednesday that the recent strong earthquake that rocked South Halmahera District claimed six lives, displaced 3,104 residents, and caused serious damage to 971 houses.

The damaged houses spread across various villages, including Ranga-Ranga, Gane, Samat, Gaimu, Kuwo, Liaro, Tomara, Tanjung Jare, and Lemo-Lemo. A total of 51 people also suffered injuries following the quake that had hit the district on July 14, the agency’s secretary, Ali Yau, confirmed.

Two of the wounded victims of the 7.2-magnitude earthquake, whose epicenter was located 65 kilometers (km) northwest of Labuha, at a depth of 10 km below sea level, suffered grave injuries, he remarked, adding that several houses of worship, including two mosques and a church, got damaged.

As many as 3,104 residents are taking refuge in 15 places, he stated. In assisting those in disaster-hit areas, Head of the South Halmahera Disaster Mitigation Agency Jalil Efendi earlier confirmed that the agency had declared an emergency response period on July 15-21.

The district government has set up public kitchens to cater to 1,104 refugees in nine disaster-hit areas.

In distributing humanitarian aid to the needy, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has also dispatched an MI-8 helicopter. According to the agency’s spokesman, Agus Wibowo, logistics aid, including tents and other necessities, for evacuees poured in during the emergency response period.

“Other aid, in the form of tents, had also been delivered aboard a Hercules aircraft on Tuesday night,” acting chief of the agency’s data and information center and public relations, Agus Wibowo,

noted in a press statement released on Wednesday.

The BNPB had earlier also dispatched a tanker with relief aid to South Halmahera. The aid was later loaded onto small ships to reach the affected areas.

Situated on the Pacific ring of fire, Indonesia is prone to natural disasters, including earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

During 2018, Indonesia was hit by a total of 11,577 earthquakes, including several of them that caused serious casualties, with the number significantly increasing as compared to that in 2017, Head of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Dwikorita Karnawati remarked.

Several of the earthquake-related events that occurred in Indonesia last year were never witnessed before, such as the liquefaction in Palu; a tsunami that struck before the issuance of a warning in Palu, and the Sunda Strait Tsunami, she pointed out. (ant)

Wells Fargo 2Q results beat Street estimates WASHINGTON - Wells Fargo reported better-than-expected earnings despite lower interest income in the second quarter, a potential concern for investors with a Fed interest rate cut likely on the horizon. Shares in the consumer banking giant slid 3%.

Wells Fargo & Co., still under growth restrictions by regulators after years of missteps and scandals, reported net interest income for the quarter of $12.1 billion. That’s down 4% from $12.5 billion in the second quarter last year and a 2% decline from the first quarter of 2019. Analysts surveyed by FactSet were expecting $12.2 billion in net interest income for the bank.

Net interest income carries extra importance for commercial banks like Wells Fargo, who rely less heavily on fee revenue than investment banks.

Like other banks, Wells Fargo has benefited from a rise in interest rates in recent years, somewhat offsetting the restrictions placed on the bank by regulators. But the days of rising rates appear to be coming to an end for now, as the Fed has recently signaled that it could cut rates at its meeting at the end of the month.

Overall, the San Francisco-based bank reported second-quarter net income rose 19% to $6.21 billion, or $1.30 per share, from $5.19 billion, or 98 cents per share, a year earlier.

The results topped Wall Street expectations. Analysts surveyed by FactSet expected earnings per share of $1.17.

The biggest U.S. mortgage lender posted revenue of $21.58 billion, essentially the same as last year’s second quarter, but beat forecasts of $20.9 billion.

Last year, the Federal Reserve capped the size of Wells Fargo’s assets after an assortment of scandals, beginning in 2016 with the uncovering of millions of fake checking accounts its employees opened to meet sales quotas. The Federal Reserve has not said when it will remove its restrictions on Wells’ business. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said earlier this year that the bank had more work to do to meet the Fed’s demands.

Further complicating matters, Wells is still without a permanent CEO after Tim Sloan abruptly resigned after what many considered a poor performance defending the bank in front of Congress in March.

Interim CEO Allen Parker said during a call with analysts that the bank won’t set targets beyond 2019 until a permanent chief executive is in place.

“We’re still at the point where the savings we’re achieving are not reaching the bottom line,” he said. “We anticipate that this could continue next year.”

Wells Fargo shares ended Tuesday down $1.41 at $45.30.

JPMorgan Chase posts $9.7 billion profit, beating estimates

NEW YORK - Banking giant JPMorgan Chase & Co. said Tuesday that its second quarter profits grew by 16% from a year ago, helped by lower taxes and the ability to charge businesses and consumers more to borrow money.

The nation’s largest bank by assets said Tuesday that it earned $9.65 billion, or $2.82 per share, up from a profit of $8.32 billion, or $2.29 per share, a year earlier.

The results beat the forecasts of analysts, who were looking for JPMorgan to earn $2.50 a share, according to FactSet. JPMorgan is one of a trio of banks that reported their results on Tuesday, the others being Wells Fargo and Goldman Sachs.

Citigroup reported its results on Monday, which disappointed investors and sent financial stocks broadly lower that day.

Both Goldman and Wells reported profits that beat analysts’ expectations.

Banks big and small have been benefiting from the Federal Reserve’s decision to raise interest rates steadily the last few years in response to a stronger U.S. economy.

However, that benefit may be coming to an end. The Fed is widely expected to cut interest rates, perhaps as soon as the end of this month, in response to slowing global economic growth.

“We continue to see positive momentum with the U.S. consumer - healthy confidence levels, solid job creation and rising wages - which are reflected in our consumer and community banking results,” Jamie

Dimon, JPMorgan Chase’s chief executive and chairman, said in a statement.

JPMorgan’s investment banking division did not fare as well, posting an 8% decline in pretax profits. Investment banking revenue was down 9% from a year earlier, as more companies sat on the sidelines due to economic uncertainty, resulting partly from U.S. trade disputes with China and other countries.

The bank reported that its return on common equity was 16%, compared with 14% a year ago. Return on common equity is a measurement on how well banks do with the assets they have on their balance sheet, and most big banks aim for a returns above 10%.

JPMorgan’s results were boosted by a one-time $768 million benefit related to the end of certain tax audits. Firm-wide revenue was $29.57 billion, more than the $28.84 billion analysts expected. (ap)

Peak of the temple festival or piodalan at Batu Medawu Temple, Nusa Penida, took place on January 30. There is an interesting myth about the establishment of the temple belonging to the sad kahyangan in Klungkung which is related to the failure of Dukuh Jumpungan against Batara Toh Langkir, the ruler of mainland Bali.

Chairperson of the Ritual Committee, Putu Sujana, stated on Friday (Jan. 2) the piodalan in the sad kahyangan temple falls every six months and coincides with the Buda Kliwon Pahang. Local Hindus seemed enthusiastic about making prayers. Moreover, the Regent of Klungkung, Nyoman Suwirta, and his wife also came to say prayers in order that nature and its contents will always be calm and peaceful, in the midst of the current situation increasingly familiar with natural disasters.

This temple has the concept of nyegara gunung or sea-mountainward where there is a combination of land and sea in one form of beauty. At the Batu Medawu Temple, all the pilgrims performed prayers for three times, namely at the Segara, Taman and Penataran Temple.

This temple is supported by half the customary villagers, starting from the customary village of Kutampi Atas to the south and the east.

In addition to the pilgrims coming

from their own local community, the festival at the Batu Medawu Temple is also often attended by people from the Island of Bali.

Batu Medawu Temple is located at Suana village, just west of Semaya hamlet. As one of the sad kahyangan temples in Klungkung, this temple has a long history in its existence in Bali. The local temple priest explained the name Batu Medawu comes from the word perahu medah batu or a boat dividing rocks.

The origin is reinforced by the story of Nusa Penida Chronicle telling about the story of I Renggan, one of the grandchildren of Dukuh Jumpungan who wanted to conquer Bali with his magical boat.

In the story, I Renggan is believed to have the capability of making every land passed through by his boat will become an ocean.

Earthquake affects Badung in 36 points, South Kuta mostly affected MANGUPURA - Massive earthquake shaking the Island of Bali on Tuesday (Jul. 16) indeed affected a number of buildings in Badung. A school in South Kuta, namely the SDN 1 Ungasan elementary school was damaged.

Moreover, due to the many falling roof tiles, three students and one teacher suffered a head injury.

According to the Principal of the SDN 1 Ungasan, Ni Made Asri, when the earthquake occurred, all students and teachers panicked. She claimed to be sad because, at that time, the first grade teacher was in classroom accompanying students.

Due to falling roof tiles, the teacher on behalf of Ni Nengah Sukensi, suffered head injuries. Meanwhile, the other three students also suffered injuries and were taken to the nearest health center.

She said the school established in 1934 currently has a total of 317 students. SYDNEY - Australia’s government on Wednesday called on China to allow an Australian child and his Uighur mother to leave the country, days after co-signing a letter denouncing Beijing’s treatment of the Muslim minority.

China has rounded up an estimated one million Uighurs and other mostly Muslim Turkic-speaking minorities into re-education camps in tightly controlled Xinjiang region, in the country’s northwest.

Sadam Abdusalam has campaigned for months for his Uighur wife, Nadila Wumaier, and their son Lutifeier, whom he has never met, to be allowed to come to Australia.

Australia’s embassy has “formally requested that the Chinese authorities allow Ms Wumaier and her son (who is an Australian citizen) to travel to Australia”, Foreign Minister Marise Payne said Wednesday.

The statement came after Abdusalam, an Australian citizen, shared his plight publicly for the first time during a documentary on the Xinjiang camps aired Monday on national broadcaster ABC. He told AFP that his wife was taken in for questioning by Chinese authorities the following day, but was later released.

Payne said that she was aware of the reports that Wumaier was inter-

rogated, but added that diplomats had no consular access rights as she was not an Australian citizen.

China’s foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said at a regular press briefing in Beijing on Wednesday that he had not seen the Australian statement.

“If the Australian side provides China with detailed relevant information through bilateral channels, China will provide the necessary assistance,” he said.

Canberra had initially denied citizenship to Lutifeier, who was born in Xinjiang in August 2017, but backtracked last year following a legal battle.

Abdusalam said he was “really happy” that Australia was taking action, but called on officials to do more.

“I’m going to keep trying to keep pressure on China and keep pressure on the Australian government,” he told AFP. “On 31 August he will be two years old,” Abdusalam said of Lutifeier.

“I would like to see my son before 31 August so we can celebrate his birthday as a family.”

Australian lawyers representing the family are urging Canberra to fast-track a visa for Wumaier.

The Sidama say they plan to unilaterally declare their own federal state this week -- a move analysts say could inflame Ethiopia’s political crisis and lead to bloodshed.

In Hawassa, the would-be capital of the proposed state, motorbike riders blared their horns on Monday as young men ran through the streets waving flags and singing songs in anticipation of the announcement.

The feared showdown touches on the issue of autonomy -- the bedrock of a federal system designed to provide widespread ethnic self-rule in a hugely diverse country.

At present, Ethiopia is partitioned into nine semi-autonomous regions. The constitution requires

the government to organise a referendum for any ethnic group that wants to form a new entity.

The Sidama have agitated for years to leave the diverse Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region of which they are a part, and create their own state.

The dream gained fresh momentum after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed came to power last year promising wide-ranging reforms.

But his government has dithered on responding to the request for a referendum. Under the constitution, the vote must be held within a year -– a deadline that expires Thursday.

“If the government does not come back with a decision on this

by Thursday, we will enforce the

law by going to the zonal authorities,” Dukale Lamiso, president of the opposition Sidama Liberation Movement, told AFP. Abiy told lawmakers earlier this month that a unilateral declaration could force the central government to intervene.

The International Crisis Group (ICG) has warned that the federal government has “no good option.”

Preventing the formation of a state could spark violence, but granting it could trigger unrest between minorities within the region, the think tank says.

New clues on why women’s Alzheimer’s risk differs from men’s

LOS ANGELES - New research gives some biological clues to why women may be more likely than men to develop Alzheimer’s disease and how this most common form of dementia varies by sex.

At the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in Los Angeles on Tuesday, scientists offered evidence that the disease may spread differently in the brains of women than in men. Other researchers showed that several newly

identified genes seem related to the disease risk by sex.

Two thirds of Alzheimer’s cases in the U.S. are in women and “it’s not just because we live longer,” said Maria Carrillo, the association’s chief science officer. There’s also “a biological underpinning” for sex differences in the disease, she said.

Some previous studies suggest that women at any age are more likely than men to develop Alzheimer’s. Scientists also know that a gene called APOE-4 seems to raise risk more for women than for men in certain age groups.

At the same time, women with the disease in its early stages may go undiagnosed because they tend to do better on verbal tests than men, which masks Alzheimer’s damage.

The new studies add more evidence and potential explanations for suspected variations between how men and women develop the disease.

Vanderbilt University researchers found differences in how tau, a protein that forms tangles that destroy nerve cells, spreads in the brains of women compared to men. Using scans on 301 people with normal thinking skills and 161 others with mild impairment, they mapped where tau was deposited and correlated it with nerve networks — highways that brain signals follow.

They found that tau networks in women with mild impairment were more diffuse and spread out than in men, suggesting that more areas of the brain were affected.

It’s long been known that women do better on tests of verbal memory — skills like recalling words and lists.

University of California, San Diego, researchers found that women did better on these skills despite similar signs of early to moderate Alzheimer’s than men.

Using scans on more than 1,000 older adults, they found sex differences in how the brain uses sugar, its main energy source. Women metabolized sugar better, which may give them more ability to compensate for the damage from dementia and make them less likely to be diagnosed with it by tests that involve verbal skills.

“The female advantage might mask early signs of Alzheimer’s and delay diagnosis,” said study leader Erin Sundermann. “Women are able to sustain normal verbal performance longer,” partly because of better brain metabolism.

At the University of Miami, scientists analyzed genes in 30,000 people — half with Alzheimer’s, half without it — and found four that seem related to disease risk by sex.

“One confers risk in females and not males and three confer risk in males but not females,” said one study leader, Eden Martin.

Researchers don’t know yet exactly how these genes affect risk — or by how much.

“Some of these look like they’re tied to the immune system and we know there are differences between males and females” in how that works, said another study leader, Brian Kunkle.

Seven other genes seem to have different effect on risks in men versus women. The researchers have a National Institute on Aging grant to do an international study on nearly 100,000 people to try to validate and extend the results. (afp)

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Clinic in Ohio says it has delivered the first baby in North America from a womb transplanted from a dead donor.

Uterine transplants have enabled more than a dozen women to give birth, usually with wombs donated from a living donor such as a friend or a relative. In December, doctors in Brazil reported the world’s first birth using a deceased donor’s womb.

“Through this research, we

aim to make these extraordinary events ordinary for the women who choose this option,” transplant surgeon Andreas Tzakis said in a statement on the hospital’s website.

“We are grateful to the donor. Their generosity allowed our patient’s dream to come true and a new baby to be born.”

These types of transplants were pioneered in Sweden, where the first successful procedure was performed five years ago.

The Cleveland hospital said

Tuesday that the girl was born in June. The clinic has done five uterus transplants so far and three have been successful, with two women waiting to attempt pregnancy with new wombs.

The hospital said its program uses wombs from female donors who have died recently, as opposed to using a live donor “who would need to have major abdominal surgery to have her uterus removed.”

Meanwhile, SMPN 5 Mendoyo experienced cracks on the walls as happened to the office and natural science laboratory room. A number of students also panicked when the earthquake occurred and suffered injuries. I Ketut Semadi Yoga Yasa, for instance, had blisters. Moreover, another student, Ni Komang Ariani, was fainted in panic.

According to Gianyar, the increase in the levy rate of Kintamani tourism to IDR 50,000 is reasonable and logical considering the tourist objects offered by Kintamani are extraordinary. Currently, Penelokan tourism objects have been fixed and arranged. In addition, the Kintamani tourism management body has also been formed. The road facilities to tourist destinations in the Batur Caldera have been widened and in the future will be arranged with the addition of street lighting. R. Kelly denied bond on federal charges including child porn

CHICAGO - A Chicago judge ordered R&B superstar R. Kelly to be held without bond on sweeping federal charges linked to child pornography and other crimes at a hearing Tuesday.

The musician who for decades has faced sexual abuse accusations was arrested last week on suspicion of having sex with five underage girls, recording some of it, and then attempting to hide the evidence.

According to local media federal prosecutors described the musician -- known for hits like “I Believe I Can Fly” -- as “an extreme danger to the community, especially to minor girls” in arguing that neither house arrest nor electronic monitoring would suffice.

“This risk of obstruction is real. This risk is ongoing. This risk is heightened by the defendant’s fame and power,” one prosecutor told Judge Harry Leinenweber, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

After being denied bond the artist born Robert Kelly pleaded not guilty to the 13-count indictment. In a separate blow Kelly, 52, also faces a five-count superseding indictment in New York on charges including racketeering, as well as coercing and transporting minors to have sex.

He has not yet been arraigned in the New

York case, and federal prosecutors have indicated he would eventually be brought there to face charges. Following the Chicago hearing Kelly’s lawyer Steve Greenberg said the artist is “obviously disappointed” to remain in custody, with the attorney dubbing his jailing “largely inhumane.”

“He’s absolutely not a flight risk,” Greenberg told journalists. “He’s in 24-hour-a-day solitary confinement... because that’s the safest place for them to house him.”

Prior to his arrest last week Kelly had been out on bond in connection with state felony charges of aggravated sexual assault in Chicago’s Cook County criminal court.

Kelly has a decades-long history of abuse allegations, especially of underage girls. In 1994 he wed his protegee Aaliyah, the late R&B star who was 15 at the time.

He began facing renewed scrutiny earlier this year upon the release of the docu-series “Surviving R. Kelly,” which on Tuesday nabbed an Emmy nomination for outstanding informational series or special. (afp)

Jokowi, Balakhrisnan talk about infrastructure, investment issues

BOGOR - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and Singaporean Foreign Affairs Minister Vivian Balakhrisnan talked about infrastructure, investment, and development of human resources at the Bogor Palace, here, on Wednesday.

“The President revealed his visions on last July 14. Of the five visions, at least three could be connected and offered for cooperation, namely, first on infrastructure, second on investment, and third on human resource development,” Foreign Affairs Minister Retno LP Marsudi told the press here on Wednesday following the meeting.

Retno Marsudi and Minister/State Secretary Pratikno flanked Jokowi during the meeting.

Discussion on human resource development focused on vocational schools and polytechnics.

Also, the existing human resource development cooperation will be stepped up, she remarked.

“Of course, to accelerate (the programs), one of the options is to organize training for trainers,” she said.

“The journey for the last year has been concrete. For instance, we have seen very obvious progress in Kendal Industrial Park. A polytechnic school for furniture was opened last January,” she said.

Also, there will be cooperation in aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul facilities to be set up in the Bintan, Batam and Karimun (BBK) regions to support Changi Airport. Balakhrisnan is on a working visit to Indonesia from July 16 to 18, 2019. (ant)

‘Game of Thrones’ breaks record with 32 Emmy nominations

LOS ANGELES - The divisive final season of “Game of Thrones” smashed the record for most Primetime Emmy nominations by a drama series in a single year, earning a whopping 32 nods Tuesday.

HBO’s fantasy epic enraged fans with its bumpy conclusion but still trounced the competition to strengthen its iron grip on the small-screen equivalent of the Oscars.

“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” -- Amazon’s story of a 1950s housewife-turned-stand up comic -- was a distant second with 20 nominations.

“Thrones” is the most decorated

fictional show in the awards’ sevendecade history, and now has 161 nominations overall -- including 47 wins.

“For those who will be adding 2019 to their long list of nominations and or wins from other years -- it never gets old!” said Television Academy chairman and CEO Frank Scherma.

The show about families vying for the Iron Throne broke a 25-year drama series nominations record held by “NYPD Blue,” which earned 27 nods in 1994.

Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington were recognized in the lead acting categories, while eight other “Thrones” cast members swept the

board in the supporting and guest acting categories. The shortened eighth and last season also won a slew of technical awards.

“Thrones” capitalized on a threadbare year for drama, with several big hitters such as “The Handmaid’s Tale” missing from the main categories. The next highestplaced drama -- AMC’s “Breaking Bad” prequel “Better Call Saul” -- managed just eight nominations.

HBO’s acclaimed limited series “Chernobyl” placed third overall this year with 19 nominations, ahead of perennial Emmys powerhouse “Saturday Night Live” with 18. (afp)
