Singer Aaron Carter arrested in Georgia GEORGIA - Singer Aaron Carter was arrested on Saturday in Georgia and charged with driving under the influence and possession of marijuana, according to media reports.

Carter, 29, was arrested alongside girlfriend Madison Parker, the reports said.

ABC News, citing the Habersham County sheriff’s office, said the pair were arrested in Georgia on Saturday night. Other reports said Carter was pulled over driving erratically.

Earlier on Saturday the singer said on Twitter he would not make a scheduled concert in Kansas City due to “transportation issues.”

BBC names first female “Doctor Who”

LONDON - The lead role in British sci-fi television series “Doctor Who” will be played by a woman for the first time in its more than 50-year history, the BBC said on Sunday.

After much speculation over the role, Britain’s public broadcaster said 35-year-old British actress Jodie Whittaker, who starred in the award-winning television crime drama series “Broadchurch”, will play the 13th Doctor.

The news was announced in a one-minute video clip broadcast on television after the Wimbledon tennis men’s final match, showing the actress walking through a forest wearing a long coat and hiding her face with a hood until the final moment.

“I always knew I wanted the Thirteenth Doctor to be a woman

and we’re thrilled to have secured our number one choice. Her audition for The Doctor simply blew us all away. Jodie is an in-demand, funny, inspiring, super-smart force of nature and will bring loads of wit, strength and warmth to the role,” said Chris Chibnall, the show’s new Head Writer and Executive Producer.

The Doctor, who travels through time in what from the outside appears to be a blue police telephone box, has the ability to regenerate, allowing a number of actors to play the role since the series was first broadcast in 1963.

Whittaker will replace Peter Capaldi, who took on the role in 2013 amid an increasing clamour that it should go to a woman.

His final episode will be the 2017 Christmas special. Previous “Time Lords” include Tom Baker, Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant.

Whittaker said it was “completely overwhelming” to be taking on the role and she wanted to tell fans of the series “not to be scared” by her gender.

“As an actor, as a human, as someone who wants to continually push themselves and challenge themselves, and not be boxed in by what you’re told you can and can’t be. It feels incredible,” she said. (rtr)

Biggest snowfall in decades blankets Chile’s capital

SANTIAGO — Chile’s capital was blanketed this weekend by the biggest snowfall in decades, with some residents grumbling about blocked roads and downed power lines, while others made snowmen or tossed snowballs. Tens of thousands of people had their power knocked out in Santiago’s metropolitan area with some parts receiving up to 40 centimeters (16 inches) of the white stuff, according to the National Emergency Office.

Residents woke up Saturday to find their city covered with snow and by late Sunday thousands of homes still lacked electricity. Andres Rebolledo of the energy ministry said power should be restored by Sunday night or Monday. A worker at a Santiago hospital died when he slipped and hit his head. Chile’s Meteorological Office said it was the biggest snowfall in the capital in 46 years.More than 280,000 people have reportedly been left without power in Santiago.

facility died from an apparent heart attack while trying to clear snow, according to reports, while trees struck electricity lines.

And two other people - a 15year-old girl and her grandmother - were thought to have been injured after they suffered electric shocks from a damaged cable. The snow has also led to treacherous driving conditions.

Meanwhile, children enjoyed snowball fights and built snowmen for the first time in their

lives. One resident said: “Yes, the snow fell but also it feels like a magical atmosphere here in Bella (the Bellavista neighbourhood) and in Santiago generally. No one expected it.”Another said: “Incredible. I remember more or less in 70-something (a year in the 1970s). It was the last time that it snowed in Santiago and it looked precious, Santiago, like this. “Look at how it’s snowing, the little cakes of snow, marvellous. It is impressive.”(ap)

Belok Sidan tourism villagers stay manful to do farming

MANGUPURA — Belok Sidan tourism village located in Petang subdistrict develops agriculture-based tourism village. Although it has been designated as tourism village with a decree in 2013, villagers do not abandon their farms. Local residents remain persistent to farm because the farm can still give them pretty good results.

Various types of agricultural plants are grown in the area. Their flagship commodities are asparagus and vegetables. Moreover, the asparagus of Belok Sidan village once achieved the first champion in Asia. The commodities cultivated include tangerine, crystal guava, red guava, lemon, chili, et cetera. In addition to agriculture, local people develop livestock farms, especially cattle.

Due to many types of agriculture developed in the fertile soil, villagers of Belok Sidan have established several groups of farmers. There are groups of breeders, tangerine group, crystal guava group and so forth.

“What we emphasize here is that farmers remain to actively do farming. With the tourism village we develop, in addition to getting agricultural produce, guests can also look around our farms and pick our agricultural produce. Surely, guests want to get something at the location,” said Ketut Sueta, Chief of Belok Sidan tourism village recently.

Consisting of nine hamlets with 1,800 households, approximately 85 percent of the Belok Sidan population is working as farmers. However, only a small

portion of them are land owners, while most of them are sharecroppers. With an area of 3,200 square meters, on average each farmer can manage half to one hectare of land.

In the meantime, community figures such as headman, chief of customary village, hamlet chief and subak chief are involved in the management of the tourism village. Thus, any program made will be easy to run. Sidan tourism village is managed by villagers not individually, because the concept of tourism village at Belok Sidan is intended for the welfare of society in general. To that end, people also build village-owned enterprise (BUMDes) to enable the management of tourism village to run well.

Precisely, at Lawak hamlet of Belok Sidan is also made trekking path of both short distance and long distance. Guests can enjoy nature in mountainous area and farm by bike ride. Commenced in 1997 from Lawak hamlet, the tourism village grows by degrees until today. It also built Bali Ecovillage in cooperation with investors, so the results are divided. Bali Ecovillage is a tourist cottage equipped with a restaurant coming with natural atmosphere of mountains. It provides tourism and overnight packages.

Sueta said that his management does not want many guest visits. “We just hope a few guests to come as long as the guests have money. Our room rate is IDR 1.5 million per night,” he said. Local villagers prefer quality guests because many guests will also disrupt the farmland. (kmb42)

BANGLI - The phenomenon of sulfuric bursts re-emerging in the waters of Lake Batur, Kintamani, since a few days ago is now widespread. After thousands of fish died at Dukuh hamlet, Abang Batu Dinding, Kintamani, causing losses estimated to reach billions of rupiahs, now it’s the turn for the fish in floating fish cage (KJA) owned by fish farmers of Terunyan village that died from this burst. As a result, fish farmers can only surrender to see the fish having been decent to harvest and to be fingerlings floating in the lake water near fish cage.

The losses are estimated to reach hundreds of millions of rupiahs.

A fish farmer from Terunyan village, I Nengah Guantara, revealed that sulfuric burst at Terunyan region has occurred since two days ago. He said that almost all fish in his own floating fish cage along with that of other farmers died from sulfuric bursts. “The fish in each cage almost died, including the fingerlings due to the phenomenon of sulfuric burst,” said Guantara on Sunday (Jul. 16).

Guantara added that the dead fish amounted to be few tons because all the fish existing in each hole almost entirely died. Each hole contains approximately 1,0001,500 heads. So, it is just multiplied with dozens of the floating fish cages, the dead fish reached few tons.

“The fish are already worth harvesting. But some fingerlings are also dead. Due to this condition, I suffer losses up to tens of millions of rupiahs, while if calculated thoroughly with the number of fish cage the losses reach hundreds of millions of rupiahs,” said Guantara.

fish farmers he has taken out the fish carcasses to be thrown away.

However, there are still some fish carcasses remaining to float in the middle of the lake and on the lakeside.

“We have taken out the dead fish in the cage for disposal, but some fish carcasses are still floating in the lake and the lakeside.

I’ve surrendered to this condition because sulfuric burst is a natural phenomenon,” said Guantara.

In the meantime, the Head of the Bangli Agriculture, Food Security and Fishery Agency, I Wayan Sukartana, said that such sulfuric burst in Lake Batur has occurred since July 12. On that condition, his agency has made surveillance effort including checking the lake water content at two locations on Thursday (Jul. 13). Result of the water sample taken at Kedisan village indicated that Dissolved Oxygen (DO) rate is 6.47, temperature at 25o Celsius, pH 5 and sulfuric content of 0.04. Then, the water sample taken at Abang Batu Dinding has DO rate of 3, temperature of 25o Celsius, pH 5 and sulfuric content of 0.08.

“From the results, the oxygen conditions in the water are very low and the water content is below normal with high sulfuric content.

This is the reason why fish in the lake and floating fish cages of farmers died,” he said.

Sukartana added that to avoid the death of fish from continuing, he requested that all activities in the lake should be reduced. Besides, the residents must continue to monitor the direction of sulfur.

“If possible, the floating fish cages having not been exposed to sulfuric influence should be harvested earlier so as to reduce losses,” hoped Sukartana. (kmb41)

High-speed Hyperloop project ready for key test in Nevada

NEVADA - Engineers will soon conduct a crucial test of a futuristic technology championed by entrepreneur Elon Musk that seeks to revolutionize transportation by sending passengers and cargo packed into pods through an intercity system of vacuum tubes.

Hyperloop One, the Los-Angeles-based company developing the technology, is gearing up to send a 28-foot-long (8.5 meter-long) pod gliding across a set of tracks in a test run in Nevada in the next few weeks, spokeswoman Marcy Simon said.

Hyperloop One is working to develop a technical vision proposed by Musk, the founder of rocket maker SpaceX and electric car company Tesla Motors. In 2013, he suggested sending pods with passengers through giant vacuum tubes between Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Hyperloop aims to achieve speeds of 250 miles per hour (402 km per hour) in its upcoming phase of testing.

As it gears up for that experiment, the company on Wednesday released the results from a May 12 test in the Nevada desert. A Hyperloop One sled on wheels for the first time coasted above a track using electromagnetic propulsion and magnetic levitation, Simon said.

It levitated for 5.3 seconds in a vacuum-sealed tube and reached speeds of 70 mph (113 kph), the company said in a statement. By comparison, another test by Hyperloop One that made national headlines last year was done on an open-air track, not in the tube, a key to achieving high speeds.

Backers of the project envision the pods reaching speeds of 750 mph (1,200 kph), but skeptics say the hyperloop idea faces real-world challenges ranging from obtaining construction permits to making turns at jet speed.

Hyperloop One has raised $160 million in funding and has touted the technology’s potential as a rapidtransit option.

“Hyperloop One will move people and things faster than at any other time in the world,” Shervin Pishevar, co-founder and executive chairman of Hyperloop One, said in a statement. (rtr)

London museum installs whale skeleton

LONDON - London’s Natural History Museum has installed a four-and-a-half-ton blue whale skeleton to tower over the heads of visitors, replacing the remains of a muchloved diplodocus known as Dippy.

The whale’s bones, which were bought in 1892 for 250 pounds, have been suspended mid-air with the head lowered and jaw gaping as if it is about to scoop up tourists.

The 82-foot long skeleton will greet people as they enter the building’s Hintze Hall from Friday - a new display highlighting the institution’s conservation work.

To overcome the congestion problem in Kuta and South Kuta, the Head of the Badung Transportation and Infocom Agency, A.A. Rai Yuda Dharma, said that his agency will establish a number of monitoring posts at some crossroads such as at the intersection of Jalan Majapahit, Kuta Galleria and Jalan Setiabudi. “Later on, three to four officers on duty will be assigned from afternoon until night,” he said.

Especially for Kuta area, he stated that traffic management and engineering has been discussed and even tested. However, it must be suspended for a while considering it has not been accepted by the public. He admitted that congestion issues are not only influenced by the high passing vehicle traffic but also by the number of vehicles parked on the shoulder of the road. Related to this matter, the joint team under coordination of municipal police with the members of transportation agency, public protection, people’s empowerment agency (LPM), police and military personnel has provided coaching and reprimands. Dozens of Kutuh villagers not yet enjoy electricity

BANGLI — Dozens of household heads at Kutuh village, Kintamani, so far still have not enjoyed the electricity. This happens because the PLN network has not been able to reach the area occupied by dozens of household heads.

Headman of Kutuh, Wayan Pasek, said on Sunday (Jul. 16) that so far there are still approximately 30 household heads at his village that have not enjoyed electricity.

Dozens of them are scattered at two villages namely the hamlet of Angansari and Kutuh.

“So far, they have not been able to enjoy electricity because the location of their residence is in remote area, some sit in hill areas and field areas,” he said.

For home lighting at night, those families have been forced to rent / connect from the home of other residents who have been served by PLN connection. “The payment is based on the bulb in use and will be paid monthly,” he explained.

In addition to renting, some other residents who have not received the electricity connection are also admitted to still use traditional lighting equipment such as lantern.

Pasek added that to overcome the electricity issue, his author-

ity has proposed for the help of solar power plant (PLTS) to provincial government. So far, provincial government has followed up the proposal by making data collection. He said the 30 families having not got PLN’s power connection will possibly get solar electricity assistance in 2018. “Possibly, they can get in 2018. Right now, the help of solar power plant is handled by provincial government instead of

district government previously,” he explained.

He revealed that in 2016, approximately 60 household heads at his village already got the help of solar power plant from the government gradually. Those families averagely live in remote areas from village center. So far, the solar power plant given by the government stays in good condition and can be utilized by the community. (kmb40)

Farmers’ life in Klungkung

Cultivation land narrow, live the life under poverty line

PROFESSION of farmer is still occupied by some people in Klungkung district. However, after running for years, not all of them are able to live prosperous life from the harvest yield. Most of them are still hanging around. Additionally, the impression of robbing Peter to pay Paul remains to exist. What is the cause of this?

Klungkung district is not only famous for its abundant marine wealth and natural beauty that is able to hypnotize the eyes of people, both domestic and foreign. Beyond that, the district known as the region of assorted vegetables (bumi serombotan) also has agricultural sector. It stretches across the district. Commodities cultivated are not only rice, but also some others include chili, soybeans and various kinds of vegetables.

However behind it, farmers’ life has not been entirely prosperous.

Most are still hanging around. Their harvest yield cannot be relied upon for sustainable life. There is still impression of drawback. Farmers are still made to look for debt. It is a brief story narrated by Ketut Purna, a farmer of Subak Takmung, Takmung village, Banjarangkan.

“Now, the agriculture does not give much hope, farmers are difficult to prosper. Our harvest and expenditure often break even,” he said on Sunday (Jul. 16).

The less welfare of farmers, said this 65-year-old man, is triggered by operating costs tending to increase. It is incomparable to the harvest yield. In addition, it is caused by the quite narrow cultivated land. “The price of fertilizer also tends to rise, while the land is narrow. Thus the harvest yield will run out to cover that,” he said.

To increase income, farmers continue to make breakthroughs. One of them is by switching commodities from rice to vegetables considered to have more promising selling points. Likewise, the maintenance does not cost too much. “That’s one of the ways to be able to earn more,” he added.

He stated that ideally the cultivated land area of each farmer is one hectare. Unlike the current farmers, their land only reaches less than one hectare. “In order to reduce the cost of farmers, the government has given some assistance ranging from agricultural production tools to fertilizer. BUMN encourages youngsters to uphold ‘Unity in Diversity’

DENPASAR - The future of this nation lies in the hands of the younger generation, those learning to become the avant guard in defending the unity of this nation. This is one of the reasons for the student exchange that BUMN has been organizing for the last three years.

Operations Director for the Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), AA Ngurah Wirawan, said on Sunday (July 16) that this student exchange is intended to help maintain diversity in Indonesia. “Of all of the activities that the Ministry of BUMN organizes, this is the most important, encouraging the younger generation to maintain unity in diversity”, he said at the Yani Hotel during the opening ceremony for the ‘Introducing Students to Nusantara’ program.

According to Wirawan, Indonesia is currently facing a massive problem regarding tolerance and diversity. Apart from taking part in the program itself, students from Maluku, Papua, Bali and other areas get a chance to gather together, interact and get to know each other.

“In 20 or 30 years it is they who will be leading and replacing us all,” he added.

It is hoped that apart from learning about the culture of the archipelago (nusantara), these students will also become interested in learning about how BUMN works for the nations. Angkasa Pura man-

Apart from being introduced to Balinese culture as one of the things that attracts tourists to this island, the student from North Maluku will also see first hand the kind of service offered to tourists, with the hope that he can apply the same type of service to tourists in his respective area. Australia opens way for faster military response to ‘terrorist incidents’

SEOUL - South Korea on Monday proposed military talks with North Korea, the first formal overture to Pyongyang by the government of President Moon Jae-in, to discuss ways to avoid hostile acts near the heavily militarised border.

There was no immediate response by the North to the proposal for talks later this week. The two sides technically remain at war but Moon, who came to power in May, has pledged to engage the North in dialogue as well as bring pressure to impede its nuclear and missile programmes.

The offer comes after the North claimed to have conducted the first test of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) earlier this month, and said it had mastered the technology to mount a nuclear warhead on the missile. South Korea and the United States, its main ally, dispute the claim.

“Talks and cooperation between the two Koreas to ease tension and bring about peace on the Korean peninsula will be instrumental for pushing forth a mutual, virtuous cycle for inter-Korea relations and North Korea’s nuclear problem,” the South’s Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon told a news briefing.

The South Korean defence ministry proposed talks with the North on July 21 at Tongilgak to stop all activities that fuel tension at the military demarcation line.

Tongilgak is a North Korean building at the Panmunjom truce village on the border used for previous inter-Korea talks. The last such talks were held in December 2015.

Cho also urged the restoration of military and government hotlines across the border, which had been cut by the North last year in response to the South imposing economic sanctions after a nuclear test by Pyongyang. In all, the North has conducted five nuclear tests and numerous missile tests.

The South also proposed separate talks by the rival states’ Red Cross organisations to resume a humanitarian project to reunite families separated during the 1950-53 Korean War in closely supervised events held over a few days.

The South Korean Red Cross suggested talks be held on Aug. 1, with possible reunions over the Korean thanksgiving Chuseok holiday, which falls in October this year. (rtr)

SYDNEY - Australia’s military will be more readily deployed to respond to “terrorist incidents” on home soil under proposed changes to laws announced by the government on Monday.

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said state and territory police forces would remain as the first response to such incidents, but the military would offer support to enhance their capabilities.

Under the proposed law changes, state and territory governments would be able to call for military help at any time after a “terror incident” has been declared. Previously, the military could only be called upon once police concluded they could no longer deal with an incident.

Turnbull said future attacks would likely remain the responsibility of the police but the military could also assist in incidents such as a central Sydney cafe siege in December 2014 in which two hostages were killed.

A coronial inquiry found in May that police failed to respond quickly enough to end the 16-hour siege, which has been described as Australia’s deadliest incident inspired by Islamic State extremists. The gunman, who was killed by police, had no direct ties to the militant group.

“In the current threat environment, it is most likely that a terrorist attack will use simple methodologies, a knife, a gun, a vehicle, and the attack itself could be over in minutes,” Turnbull told reporters in Sydney.

“In worse case scenarios, the ADF (Australian Defence Force) has a range of specialist capabilities to resolve complex terrorist incidents, especially protracted sieges

or hostage situations,” he said.

The Sydney cafe siege and a series of other “lone wolf” attacks have thrown police tactics, and Australia’s overall response to potential security incidents, into sharp focus.

Australian police have since changed tactics to become ready to end cases of potential hostagetaking more quickly, and to shoot suspects in “terrorist-related” incidents.

In June, police also began installing concrete bollards in pedestrian thoroughfares in Australia’s two largest cities, Sydney and Melbourne, to guard against possible vehicle attacks such as those seen recently in Europe and the United States. (rtr)

BUSINESS China Q2 GDP growth likely to cool as Beijing targets property, debt risks

BEIJING - China is expected to report on Monday that its economy grew 6.8 percent in April-June from a year earlier, cooling from the previous quarter’s robust 6.9 percent pace as policymakers seek to rein in property and debt risks.

Beijing is trying to defuse property bubbles and curb a debt build-up amid fears such risks could derail the world’s second-largest economy if not handled well, but policymakers look to be treading warily ahead of a key party meeting later this year.

Authorities’ restrictive measures on the property sector have slowed investment, while a regulatory crackdown on unscrupulous lending and a modest shift to tighter monetary conditions have started to drive up funding costs for banks and companies.

Most economists polled by Reuters expected China’s secondquarter gross domestic product growth to slow from a stronger than expected 6.9 percent rise in the first quarter, which was the fastest expansion in six quarters.

“China GDP surprised on the upside last quarter. The key driving force came from the industrial sectors but the momentum does not seem to be lasting long. Investment was the reason behind such rapid growth but

it’s now slowing down,” analysts at Natixis said in a research note.

“The good thing is that trade and consumption are still holding up but not enough to fully offset the slowdown in investment.”

A surprisingly upbeat reading would likely lift stocks and global commodity prices, but a weak outcome could boost bearish bets on the yuan, which has gained about 2 percent against the dollar so far this year.

Economists in the poll estimated GDP grew 1.7 percent quarter-onquarter, versus the first quarter’s 1.3 percent pace.

GRADUAL SLOWDOWN EXPECTED An upturn in global demand for Chinese products could be a boon for the country’s leaders as they seek to contain a dangerous build-up in debt that has ballooned to 277 percent of GDP. Meanwhile, authorities have been pushing forward supply-side

reforms to cut excess capacity in steel and coal sectors.

Data on Thursday showed both China’s exports and imports rose faster-than-expected in June from a year earlier, which could offset weakness in other parts of economy in the second quarter.

Moody’s Investors Service downgraded its credit rating in May, saying it expects the country’s financial strength will erode in coming years as growth slows and debt continues to rise.

On Friday, Fitch Ratings affirmed its A+ rating for China but flagged rising debt levels as a risk.

Beijing has set a slightly more modest growth target of around 6.5 percent for 2017, theoretically offering more wiggle room for reforms after the economy grew 6.7 percent in 2016 - the weakest pace in 26 years.

China’s economic growth is expected to cool further to 6.6 percent in 2017, according to a Reuters poll of analysts, with the pace of expansion slowing steadily in the third- and fourth-quarter.

The People’s Bank of China shifted to a modest tightening bias

at the start of this year, guiding market interest rates higher during the first quarter, including immediately after the U.S. Federal Reserve raised rates in March.

But the central bank injected substantial liquidity last month to help avoid an end-quarter cash crunch as Beijing tightened regulations to force banks to deleverage.

Festival ke Uma, Children Play Traditional Games

Hundreds of children played so cheerfully, shouted and even clapped their friends to encourage. Not afraid of being muddy, exposed to rain and sunlight, they were always happy and laughing so happily. It is the atmosphere of the Festival ke Uma held for two days (Jun. 24-25) at Subak Uma Ole, Ole, Marga Dauh Puri village, Marga, Tabanan.

They initially did not know each other, but after joining the game, they came into intimate atmosphere, happiness and full of togetherness. Space and time seem to have no limit to perform activities.

Nature and environment of paddies are very friendly providing various tools and means for them to play.

Children did not only entertain by seeing the festival alone, but were also given the opportunity to participate.

Everything served on the show is not to be watched, but to be enjoyed together. The children, are mostly from Ole hamlet, coalesced into Buratwangi Studio and Wintang Rare Studio, those from other areas such as Geluntung village, Kukuh and Penebel (Tabanan), Mengwi (Badung), Denpasar, Karangasem and Buleleng. “We designed a participative festival, where visitors can participate in the activity not just serve as spectator,” said the Coordinator, I Putu Edi Novalia Artha.

Festival ke Uma presents various types of traditional games divided into two categories namely exhibition and competition. The exhibition shows megandu, medempul, mapoh-pohan, kancing lait, obek-obek uang, colek-colek tain belek, tangklak-tingklik and gala-gala. The kinds of game contested include metimbang, nyuun sigih, matulupan, paid upih and megandong di nyanyad (mud).

The second day was flushed by rain, but no children complained and protested against nature, no one thought about the rain-stopper or the cloud-breaking laser beam. Players of the show looked like farmers, receiving abundant water and sunshine with gratitude. The children faithfully waited for the rain to stop. When the rain subsided, they returned to play happily even though the paddy fields that had previously been dried as the arena had really been back like paddy fields.

In addition to traditional games, it was also filled with yoga workshop

We really feel close to the rich environment with its inhabitants and the plants,” said this friendly man.

They were also impressed with the shower formerly used as a bathing place by local people before development of toilet at people’s home. They were happy when crossing the embankment of paddy fields with intriguing grasses and felt magical aura during the procession of melukat or purificatory rite with prayascita offering and wearing tridatu (white, red and black) thread to clean physically

and psychically. “I really feel something different because it turns out on my birthday I get a purificatory rite,” said Mr. Andreas.

Before doing the blessing at Tanah Hyang Balinese Healing Center, the six travelers were served with young coconut drink.

They had a look at various types of herbal medicinal plants and the process of paddy plants from planting to harvesting. “Really, we finally know about the process of cooking rice from husked rice.

Previously, we just hear about it,” he concluded.

After that, they looked around Balinese house applying what the so-called kosala-kosali (Balinese geomancy). They did not only feel comfortable in the house, but also felt different vibrations. Next, they enjoyed Balinese traditional menus, such as lawar, meat with gravy, shredded meat, fried condiment, pepes and others. Venezuela opposition plots “zero hour” after big anti-Maduro vote

CARACAS - Energized by a massive vote against President Nicolas Maduro in an unofficial plebiscite, Venezuela’s opposition mulled on Monday how to escalate protests and block a new congress it fears may enshrine Socialist Party hegemony.

After months of street rallies that have led to nearly 100 deaths, the Democratic Unity coalition brought millions onto the streets on Sunday for an informal referendum intended to de-legitimize a leader they call a dictator.

Now, opposition leaders are promising “Zero Hour” in Venezuela to demand a general election and stop the leftist Maduro’s plan to create a controversial new legislative super-body called a Constituent Assembly in a July 30 vote.

Opposition tactics could include lengthy road blockades and sit-ins, a national strike, or possibly even a march on the Miraflores presidential palace, similar to events before a short-lived coup against Maduro’s successor Hugo Chavez in 2002.

“Today, Venezuela stood up with dignity to say freedom does not go backwards, democracy is not negotiated,” Julio Borges, who leads the oppositioncontrolled legislature, said shortly after midnight when the referendum results were announced.

“We don’t want a fraudulent Constituent Assembly imposed on us. We don’t want to be Cuba. We don’t want to be a country without freedom,” he added, promising further announcements on opposition strategy during Monday.

Maduro, whose term is due to end in early 2019, dismissed Sunday’s opposition event as an internal

exercise by the opposition with no bearing on his government.

“Don’t go crazy, calm down,” he said on Sunday in a message to the opposition, vowing his Constituent Assembly would bring peace to the volatile nation of 30 million people.

Maduro, 54, a former bus driver and long-serving foreign minister for Chavez, narrowly won election in 2013 but has seen his ratings plunge, to just over 20 percent, during a brutal economic crisis in the South American OPEC member.

Thousands protest in Poland against judicial reforms

WARSAW - Thousands rallied in Poland’s largest cities on Sunday in protest against the ruling party’s judicial reforms, which the opposition says would kill the judges’ independence and undermine democracy.

Late on Friday the country’s parliament, where the Law and Justice (PiS) party has a majority, passed a bill giving parliament a greater say in appointing judges, which critics say violates the constitutional separation of powers.

The conservative, eurosceptic PiS has also introduced draft legislation in the past week that would replace all Supreme Court judges except those chosen by the justice minister.

“Shame, shame” chanted protesters gathered in Warsaw under Polish and European Union flags, and calling Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the chairman of PiS and the country’s de facto leader, a “dictator”.

PiS says the party has a democratic mandate to make the judiciary more efficient and accountable to the public. Since winning the 2015 election the party has overhauled the constitutional court and given the Justice Ministry control over the prosecutor general’s office.

Threatening to take Poland to court, the European Union executive has said these measures undermine democratic checks and balances, a charge PiS denies.

On Sunday opposition leaders urged the protesters to remain in front of the parliament until Tuesday when lawmakers are to debate the Supreme Court bill. Parliamentary opposition leaders vowed they would not allow for the debate to take place.

The country’s fragmented opposition also promised to be more

united against PiS. “Today we know that a great fight has begun and we know we must be together, we know we must fight against them together,” Grzegorz Schetyna, leader of the largest political grouping, the Civic Platform, told the crowd.

Poland’s TVP television, controlled by the state, said the protests and calls to block Tuesday’s debate were “an attempt to organise a coup against a democratically elected power.”

In December Poland saw its biggest political stand-off in years when opposition leaders blocked the parliament’s plenary hall podium ahead of a budget vote, after objecting to plans by PiS to curb media access to parliament.

Protesters on Sunday were cordoned off from the main entrance to the parliament by barricades erected ahead of the demonstrations.

The police estimated that some 4.5 thousand people protested there, but the Warsaw city hall said the number was above 10,000.

In the evening several thousand people gathered in front of the Supreme Court building next to Warsaw’s historic centre, holding candles in a peaceful protest “in defence of courts and democracy”.

Increasingly isolated from its Western allies in the European Union, PiS has been accused by critics of a tilt towards authoritarianism.

Asserting sovereignty, Indonesia renames part of South China Sea

JAKARTA - Indonesia renamed the northern reaches of its exclusive economic zone in the South China Sea as the North Natuna Sea on Friday, the latest act of resistance

by Southeast Asian nations to China’s territorial ambitions in the maritime region.

Seen by analysts as an assertion of Indonesian sovereignty, part of the renamed sea is claimed by Chi-

na under its contentious maritime boundary, known as the ‘nine-dash line’, that encompasses most of the resource-rich sea.

Several Southeast Asian states dispute China’s territorial claims and are competing with China to exploit the South China Sea’s abundant hydrocarbon and fishing resources. China has raised the ante by deploying military assets

on artificial islands constructed on shoals and reefs in disputed parts of the sea.

Indonesia insists it’s a nonclaimant state in the South China Sea dispute but has clashed with China over fishing rights around the Natuna Islands, detaining Chinese fishermen and expanding its military presence in the area over the past 18 months.

Unveiling the new official map, the deputy of maritime sovereignty at the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Arif Havas Oegroseno, noted the northern side of its exclusive economic zone was the site of oil and gas activity.

“We want to update the naming of the sea we gave a new name in line with the usual practice: the North Natuna Sea,” he told reporters.

In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said he didn’t know anything about the details of the issue, but said the name South China Sea had broad international recognition and clear geographic limits.

“Certain countries’ so-called renaming is totally meaningless,” he told a daily news briefing. “We

hope the relevant country can meet China halfway and properly maintain the present good situation in the South China Sea region, which has not come easily.”

‘CLEAR MESSAGE’

I Made Andi Arsana, an expert on the Law of the Sea from Indonesia’s Universitas Gadjah Mada, said the renaming carried no legal force but was a political and diplomatic statement.

“It will be seen as a big step by Indonesia to state its sovereignty,” he told Reuters. “It will send a clear message, both to the Indonesian people and diplomatically speaking.”

Euan Graham, director of the international security program at the Lowy Institute, said Indonesia’s action followed renewed resistance to Chinese territorial claims by other Southeast Asian states. “This will be noticed in Beijing,” he said.

Last week, Vietnam extended an Indian oil concession off its coast while a joint venture led by stateowned PetroVietnam commenced drilling further south. China has a territorial claim in both areas.

Meanwhile, the director of the Philippines Energy Resource Development Bureau, Ismael Ocampo, said on Wednesday that the country could lift a suspension on oil and gas drilling on the Reed Bank by December. The underwater mountain, lying 85 nautical miles off the Philippines coast, is also claimed by China.

Exploration activity was suspended in late 2014 as the Philippines sought an international ruling on China’s territorial claim. The Philippines won the case in the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague one year ago.

China refused to recognise the decision. Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte, who took office on June 30 last year, expressed reluctance about enforcing the decision at the time, as he sought deeper diplomatic and economic ties with China. However, the Philippines lately has become more assertive about its sovereignty.

More than two dozen oil, gas and coal blocks, including additional areas in disputed waters, may be offered during the December bidding, Ocampo said on Wednesday. (rtr)

OPPOSITION “SHOW OF FORCE”

Though polls show the opposition has majority support and his foes repeatedly call for a free and fair election as their No. 1 demand, Maduro insists they are U.S. pawns intent on sabotaging the economy and bringing him down through violence.

Most Venezuelans oppose the Constituent Assembly, which will have power to rewrite the constitution and annul the current opposition-led legislature, but Maduro is pressing on anyway for the vote in two weeks’ time.

In three questions at Sunday’s event, opposition supporters voted overwhelmingly - by 98 percent - to reject the proposed new assembly, urge the military to defend the existing constitution, and support elections before Maduro’s term ends, according to academics monitoring the vote for the opposition.

Fourteen years after a ponytailed Swiss starlet first soared into the tennis ether at The All England Club, Federer returned on Sunday as a 35-year-old veteran to confirm his place as the greatest man ever to play the grasscourt slam with a record eighth title.

SILVERSTONE - Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel said there was no need to panic after seeing his Formula One championship lead slashed to a single point on Sunday. The German, who felt lucky to see the chequered flag after a penultimate lap puncture at the British Grand Prix, finished seventh with Mercedes rival Lewis Hamilton triumphant in front of his home crowd.

“The car is great, it has been fantastic in the race again today,” Vettel told reporters.

“So there is no reason to panic or to worry. But we need to be aware that they (Mercedes) are very quick and there are a couple of advantages that we need to work on. Then it could be a different picture.”

happened out of the blue.

“It was very sudden,” he said, explaining that he had already dropped the pace and was nursing the car home in third place before the blowout.

“The tyres were going down but nothing out of the ordinary, so it was quite sudden when the tyre decided not to take me to the end of the race,” he added.

Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen finished third but he too suffered a late tyre problem that forced him to pit while in second place.

Pirelli’s sporting director Mario Isola said the tyre failures were not the same on the two cars and they were investigating.

“What we can exclude is that we had any carcass failure on Kimi’s tyre, because the tyre was still inflated,” he said. “There is

a part of the tyre that is damaged and we will investigate deeply on all the tyres.

“Sebastian had a different issue with a loss of air.”

Vettel had already been in damage limitation mode, with Hamilton heading for a dominant victory while he struggled at the start with smoking brakes and then battled with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

The tyre problem changed the picture entirely, leaving him with a fragile lead as he prepares to go to one of Hamilton’s favourite circuits in Hungary.

SAN ANTONIO — Angel Sepulveda and Edson Alvarez scored and Mexico held on to beat Curacao 2-0 on Sunday night at the Alamodome to win Group C in the CONCACAF Gold Cup and continue its bid for a fourth championship in five years.

Mexico advanced to face Honduras in the quarterfinals Thursday night in Glendale, Arizona. The defending champions had a surprisingly tough match against Curacao, which was competing in the Gold Cup for the first time.

The report, carried on a website resembling The Local, included quotes purporting to be from FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

It said that the six countries, which last month cut ties with Qatar, had collectively written to world soccer’s governing body asking it to remove Qatar as hosts under Article 85 of the FIFA Code, which

allows for such action in the case of emergency.

“The Local’s staff neither wrote, published nor removed the article in question and The Local can therefore not vouch for any of the claims made,” cofounder James Savage said in a statement on Sunday.

“Our investigation so far indicates the article appeared on a fake site designed to look like The Local, and never appeared on The Local’s own site.”

SILVERSTONE - Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel said there was no need to panic after seeing his Formula One championship lead slashed to a single point on Sunday. The German, who felt lucky to see the chequered flag after a penultimate lap puncture at the British Grand Prix, finished seventh with Mercedes rival Lewis Hamilton triumphant in front of his home crowd.

“The car is great, it has been fantastic in the race again today,” Vettel told reporters.

“So there is no reason to panic or to worry. But we need to be aware that they (Mercedes) are very quick and there are a couple of advantages that we need to work on. Then it could be a different picture.”

Vettel said the puncture had

happened out of the blue.

“It was very sudden,” he said, explaining that he had already dropped the pace and was nursing the car home in third place before the blowout.

“The tyres were going down but nothing out of the ordinary, so it was quite sudden when the tyre decided not to take me to the end of the race,” he added.

Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen finished third but he too suffered a late tyre problem that forced him to pit while in second place.

Pirelli’s sporting director Mario Isola said the tyre failures were not the same on the two cars and they were investigating.

“What we can exclude is that we had any carcass failure on Kimi’s tyre, because the tyre was still inflated,” he said. “There is

a part of the tyre that is damaged and we will investigate deeply on all the tyres.

“Sebastian had a different issue with a loss of air.”

Vettel had already been in damage limitation mode, with Hamilton heading for a dominant victory while he struggled at the start with smoking brakes and then battled with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

The tyre problem changed the picture entirely, leaving him with a fragile lead as he prepares to go to one of Hamilton’s favourite circuits in Hungary.

Venezuela opposition plots “zero hour” after big anti-Maduro vote

CARACAS - Energized by a massive vote against President Nicolas Maduro in an unofficial plebiscite, Venezuela’s opposition mulled on Monday how to escalate protests and block a new congress it fears may enshrine Socialist Party hegemony.

After months of street rallies that have led to nearly 100 deaths, the Democratic Unity coalition brought millions onto the streets on Sunday for an informal referendum intended to de-legitimize a leader they call a dictator.

Now, opposition leaders are promising “Zero Hour” in Venezuela to demand a general election and stop the leftist Maduro’s plan to create a controversial new legislative super-body called a Constituent Assembly in a July 30 vote.

Opposition tactics could include lengthy road blockades and sit-ins, a national strike, or possibly even a march on the Miraflores presidential palace, similar to events before a short-lived coup against Maduro’s successor Hugo Chavez in 2002.

“Today, Venezuela stood up with dignity to say freedom does not go backwards, democracy is not negotiated,” Julio Borges, who leads the oppositioncontrolled legislature, said shortly after midnight when the referendum results were announced.

“We don’t want a fraudulent Constituent Assembly imposed on us. We don’t want to be Cuba. We don’t want to be a country without freedom,” he added, promising further announcements on opposition strategy during Monday.

Maduro, whose term is due to end in early 2019, dismissed Sunday’s opposition event as an internal

exercise by the opposition with no bearing on his government.

“Don’t go crazy, calm down,” he said on Sunday in a message to the opposition, vowing his Constituent Assembly would bring peace to the volatile nation of 30 million people.

Maduro, 54, a former bus driver and long-serving foreign minister for Chavez, narrowly won election in 2013 but has seen his ratings plunge, to just over 20 percent, during a brutal economic crisis in the South American OPEC member.

Thousands protest in Poland against judicial reforms

WARSAW - Thousands rallied in Poland’s largest cities on Sunday in protest against the ruling party’s judicial reforms, which the opposition says would kill the judges’ independence and undermine democracy.

Late on Friday the country’s parliament, where the Law and Justice (PiS) party has a majority, passed a bill giving parliament a greater say in appointing judges, which critics say violates the constitutional separation of powers.

The conservative, eurosceptic PiS has also introduced draft legislation in the past week that would replace all Supreme Court judges except those chosen by the justice minister.

“Shame, shame” chanted protesters gathered in Warsaw under Polish and European Union flags, and calling Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the chairman of PiS and the country’s de facto leader, a “dictator”.

PiS says the party has a democratic mandate to make the judiciary more efficient and accountable to the public. Since winning the 2015 election the party has overhauled the constitutional court and given the Justice Ministry control over the prosecutor general’s office.

Threatening to take Poland to court, the European Union executive has said these measures undermine democratic checks and balances, a charge PiS denies.

On Sunday opposition leaders urged the protesters to remain in front of the parliament until Tuesday when lawmakers are to debate the Supreme Court bill. Parliamentary opposition leaders vowed they would not allow for the debate to take place.

united against PiS. “Today we know that a great fight has begun and we know we must be together, we know we must fight against them together,” Grzegorz Schetyna, leader of the largest political grouping, the Civic Platform, told the crowd.

Poland’s TVP television, controlled by the state, said the protests and calls to block Tuesday’s debate were “an attempt to organise a coup against a democratically elected power.”

In December Poland saw its biggest political stand-off in years when opposition leaders blocked the parliament’s plenary hall podium ahead of a budget vote, after objecting to plans by PiS to curb media access to parliament.

Protesters on Sunday were cordoned off from the main entrance to the parliament by barricades erected ahead of the demonstrations.

The police estimated that some 4.5 thousand people protested there, but the Warsaw city hall said the number was above 10,000.

In the evening several thousand people gathered in front of the Supreme Court building next to Warsaw’s historic centre, holding candles in a peaceful protest “in defence of courts and democracy”.

Increasingly isolated from its Western allies in the European Union, PiS has been accused by critics of a tilt towards authoritarianism.

Asserting sovereignty, Indonesia renames part of South China Sea

JAKARTA - Indonesia renamed the northern reaches of its exclusive economic zone in the South China Sea as the North Natuna Sea on Friday, the latest act of resistance

by Southeast Asian nations to China’s territorial ambitions in the maritime region.

Seen by analysts as an assertion of Indonesian sovereignty, part of the renamed sea is claimed by Chi-

na under its contentious maritime boundary, known as the ‘nine-dash line’, that encompasses most of the resource-rich sea.

Several Southeast Asian states dispute China’s territorial claims and are competing with China to exploit the South China Sea’s abundant hydrocarbon and fishing resources. China has raised the ante by deploying military assets

on artificial islands constructed on shoals and reefs in disputed parts of the sea.

Indonesia insists it’s a nonclaimant state in the South China Sea dispute but has clashed with China over fishing rights around the Natuna Islands, detaining Chinese fishermen and expanding its military presence in the area over the past 18 months.

Unveiling the new official map, the deputy of maritime sovereignty at the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Arif Havas Oegroseno, noted the northern side of its exclusive economic zone was the site of oil and gas activity.

“We want to update the naming of the sea we gave a new name in line with the usual practice: the North Natuna Sea,” he told reporters.

In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said he didn’t know anything about the details of the issue, but said the name South China Sea had broad international recognition and clear geographic limits.

“Certain countries’ so-called renaming is totally meaningless,” he told a daily news briefing. “We

hope the relevant country can meet China halfway and properly maintain the present good situation in the South China Sea region, which has not come easily.”

‘CLEAR MESSAGE’

I Made Andi Arsana, an expert on the Law of the Sea from Indonesia’s Universitas Gadjah Mada, said the renaming carried no legal force but was a political and diplomatic statement.

“It will be seen as a big step by Indonesia to state its sovereignty,” he told Reuters. “It will send a clear message, both to the Indonesian people and diplomatically speaking.”

Euan Graham, director of the international security program at the Lowy Institute, said Indonesia’s action followed renewed resistance to Chinese territorial claims by other Southeast Asian states. “This will be noticed in Beijing,” he said.

Last week, Vietnam extended an Indian oil concession off its coast while a joint venture led by stateowned PetroVietnam commenced drilling further south. China has a territorial claim in both areas.

Meanwhile, the director of the Philippines Energy Resource Development Bureau, Ismael Ocampo, said on Wednesday that the country could lift a suspension on oil and gas drilling on the Reed Bank by December. The underwater mountain, lying 85 nautical miles off the Philippines coast, is also claimed by China.

Exploration activity was suspended in late 2014 as the Philippines sought an international ruling on China’s territorial claim. The Philippines won the case in the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague one year ago.

China refused to recognise the decision. Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte, who took office on June 30 last year, expressed reluctance about enforcing the decision at the time, as he sought deeper diplomatic and economic ties with China. However, the Philippines lately has become more assertive about its sovereignty.

More than two dozen oil, gas and coal blocks, including additional areas in disputed waters, may be offered during the December bidding, Ocampo said on Wednesday. (rtr)

OPPOSITION “SHOW OF FORCE”

Though polls show the opposition has majority support and his foes repeatedly call for a free and fair election as their No. 1 demand, Maduro insists they are U.S. pawns intent on sabotaging the economy and bringing him down through violence.

Most Venezuelans oppose the Constituent Assembly, which will have power to rewrite the constitution and annul the current opposition-led legislature, but Maduro is pressing on anyway for the vote in two weeks’ time.

In three questions at Sunday’s event, opposition supporters voted overwhelmingly - by 98 percent - to reject the proposed new assembly, urge the military to defend the existing constitution, and support elections before Maduro’s term ends, according to academics monitoring the vote for the opposition.

Sunday’s nearly 7.2 million participation compared with 7.7 million opposition votes in the 2015 legislative elections that it won by a landslide and 7.3 million votes for the opposition in a 2013 presidential poll narrowly won by Maduro. (rtr)

BUSINESS China Q2 GDP growth likely to cool as Beijing targets property, debt risks

BEIJING - China is expected to report on Monday that its economy grew 6.8 percent in April-June from a year earlier, cooling from the previous quarter’s robust 6.9 percent pace as policymakers seek to rein in property and debt risks.

Beijing is trying to defuse property bubbles and curb a debt build-up amid fears such risks could derail the world’s second-largest economy if not handled well, but policymakers look to be treading warily ahead of a key party meeting later this year.

Authorities’ restrictive measures on the property sector have slowed investment, while a regulatory crackdown on unscrupulous lending and a modest shift to tighter monetary conditions have started to drive up funding costs for banks and companies.

Most economists polled by Reuters expected China’s secondquarter gross domestic product growth to slow from a stronger than expected 6.9 percent rise in the first quarter, which was the fastest expansion in six quarters.

“China GDP surprised on the upside last quarter. The key driving force came from the industrial sectors but the momentum does not seem to be lasting long. Investment was the reason behind such rapid growth but

it’s now slowing down,” analysts at Natixis said in a research note.

“The good thing is that trade and consumption are still holding up but not enough to fully offset the slowdown in investment.”

A surprisingly upbeat reading would likely lift stocks and global commodity prices, but a weak outcome could boost bearish bets on the yuan, which has gained about 2 percent against the dollar so far this year.

Economists in the poll estimated GDP grew 1.7 percent quarter-onquarter, versus the first quarter’s 1.3 percent pace.

GRADUAL SLOWDOWN EXPECTED An upturn in global demand for Chinese products could be a boon for the country’s leaders as they seek to contain a dangerous build-up in debt that has ballooned to 277 percent of GDP. Meanwhile, authorities have been pushing forward supply-side

reforms to cut excess capacity in steel and coal sectors.

Data on Thursday showed both China’s exports and imports rose faster-than-expected in June from a year earlier, which could offset weakness in other parts of economy in the second quarter.

Moody’s Investors Service downgraded its credit rating in May, saying it expects the country’s financial strength will erode in coming years as growth slows and debt continues to rise.

On Friday, Fitch Ratings affirmed its A+ rating for China but flagged rising debt levels as a risk.

Beijing has set a slightly more modest growth target of around 6.5 percent for 2017, theoretically offering more wiggle room for reforms after the economy grew 6.7 percent in 2016 - the weakest pace in 26 years.

China’s economic growth is expected to cool further to 6.6 percent in 2017, according to a Reuters poll of analysts, with the pace of expansion slowing steadily in the third- and fourth-quarter.

The People’s Bank of China shifted to a modest tightening bias

at the start of this year, guiding market interest rates higher during the first quarter, including immediately after the U.S. Federal Reserve raised rates in March.

But the central bank injected substantial liquidity last month to help avoid an end-quarter cash crunch as Beijing tightened regulations to force banks to deleverage.

Festival ke Uma, Children Play Traditional Games

Hundreds of children played so cheerfully, shouted and even clapped their friends to encourage. Not afraid of being muddy, exposed to rain and sunlight, they were always happy and laughing so happily. It is the atmosphere of the Festival ke Uma held for two days (Jun. 24-25) at Subak Uma Ole, Ole, Marga Dauh Puri village, Marga, Tabanan.

They initially did not know each other, but after joining the game, they came into intimate atmosphere, happiness and full of togetherness. Space and time seem to have no limit to perform activities.

Nature and environment of paddies are very friendly providing various tools and means for them to play.

Children did not only entertain by seeing the festival alone, but were also given the opportunity to participate.

Everything served on the show is not to be watched, but to be enjoyed together. The children, are mostly from Ole hamlet, coalesced into Buratwangi Studio and Wintang Rare Studio, those from other areas such as Geluntung village, Kukuh and Penebel (Tabanan), Mengwi (Badung), Denpasar, Karangasem and Buleleng. “We designed a participative festival, where visitors can participate in the activity not just serve as spectator,” said the Coordinator, I Putu Edi Novalia Artha.

Festival ke Uma presents various types of traditional games divided into two categories namely exhibition and competition. The exhibition shows megandu, medempul, mapoh-pohan, kancing lait, obek-obek uang, colek-colek tain belek, tangklak-tingklik and gala-gala. The kinds of game contested include metimbang, nyuun sigih, matulupan, paid upih and megandong di nyanyad (mud).

The second day was flushed by rain, but no children complained and protested against nature, no one thought about the rain-stopper or the cloud-breaking laser beam. Players of the show looked like farmers, receiving abundant water and sunshine with gratitude. The children faithfully waited for the rain to stop. When the rain subsided, they returned to play happily even though the paddy fields that had previously been dried as the arena had really been back like paddy fields.

In addition to traditional games, it was also filled with yoga workshop

They were also impressed with the shower formerly used as a bathing place by local people before development of toilet at people’s home. They were happy when crossing the embankment of paddy fields with intriguing grasses and felt magical aura during the procession of melukat or purificatory rite with prayascita offering and wearing tridatu (white, red and black) thread to clean physically

and psychically. “I really feel something different because it turns out on my birthday I get a purificatory rite,” said Mr. Andreas.

Before doing the blessing at Tanah Hyang Balinese Healing Center, the six travelers were served with young coconut drink.

They had a look at various types of herbal medicinal plants and the process of paddy plants from planting to harvesting. “Really, we finally know about the process of cooking rice from husked rice.

Previously, we just hear about it,” he concluded.

After that, they looked around Balinese house applying what the so-called kosala-kosali (Balinese geomancy). They did not only feel comfortable in the house, but also felt different vibrations. Next, they enjoyed Balinese traditional menus, such as lawar, meat with gravy, shredded meat, fried condiment, pepes and others. Farmers’ life in Klungkung

Cultivation land narrow, live the life under poverty line

PROFESSION of farmer is still occupied by some people in Klungkung district. However, after running for years, not all of them are able to live prosperous life from the harvest yield. Most of them are still hanging around. Additionally, the impression of robbing Peter to pay Paul remains to exist. What is the cause of this?

Klungkung district is not only famous for its abundant marine wealth and natural beauty that is able to hypnotize the eyes of people, both domestic and foreign. Beyond that, the district known as the region of assorted vegetables (bumi serombotan) also has agricultural sector. It stretches across the district. Commodities cultivated are not only rice, but also some others include chili, soybeans and various kinds of vegetables.

However behind it, farmers’ life has not been entirely prosperous.

Most are still hanging around. Their harvest yield cannot be relied upon for sustainable life. There is still impression of drawback. Farmers are still made to look for debt. It is a brief story narrated by Ketut Purna, a farmer of Subak Takmung, Takmung village, Banjarangkan.

“Now, the agriculture does not give much hope, farmers are difficult to prosper. Our harvest and expenditure often break even,” he said on Sunday (Jul. 16).

The less welfare of farmers, said this 65-year-old man, is triggered by operating costs tending to increase. It is incomparable to the harvest yield. In addition, it is caused by the quite narrow cultivated land. “The price of fertilizer also tends to rise, while the land is narrow. Thus the harvest yield will run out to cover that,” he said.

To increase income, farmers continue to make breakthroughs. One of them is by switching commodities from rice to vegetables considered to have more promising selling points. Likewise, the maintenance does not cost too much. “That’s one of the ways to be able to earn more,” he added.

Such condition of farmers was recognized by the Head of the Bangli Agriculture Agency, I.B. Gede Juanida. He confirmed that narrow cultivation land makes farmers difficult to prosper. “Moreover, they are sharecropping farmers so the income must be much lower,” he explained.

He stated that ideally the cultivated land area of each farmer is one hectare. Unlike the current farmers, their land only reaches less than one hectare. “In order to reduce the cost of farmers, the government has given some assistance ranging from agricultural production tools to fertilizer. With this assistance, we hope younger generation can become interested in farming,” he said. (sos)

BUMN encourages youngsters to uphold ‘Unity in Diversity’

DENPASAR - The future of this nation lies in the hands of the younger generation, those learning to become the avant guard in defending the unity of this nation. This is one of the reasons for the student exchange that BUMN has been organizing for the last three years.

Operations Director for the Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), AA Ngurah Wirawan, said on Sunday (July 16) that this student exchange is intended to help maintain diversity in Indonesia. “Of all of the activities that the Ministry of BUMN organizes, this is the most important, encouraging the younger generation to maintain unity in diversity”, he said at the Yani Hotel during the opening ceremony for the ‘Introducing Students to Nusantara’ program.

According to Wirawan, Indonesia is currently facing a massive problem regarding tolerance and diversity. Apart from taking part in the program itself, students from Maluku, Papua, Bali and other areas get a chance to gather together, interact and get to know each other.

“In 20 or 30 years it is they who will be leading and replacing us all,” he added.

It is hoped that apart from learning about the culture of the archipelago (nusantara), these students will also become interested in learning about how BUMN works for the nations. Angkasa Pura man-

Australia opens way for faster military response to ‘terrorist incidents’

SEOUL - South Korea on Monday proposed military talks with North Korea, the first formal overture to Pyongyang by the government of President Moon Jae-in, to discuss ways to avoid hostile acts near the heavily militarised border.

There was no immediate response by the North to the proposal for talks later this week. The two sides technically remain at war but Moon, who came to power in May, has pledged to engage the North in dialogue as well as bring pressure to impede its nuclear and missile programmes.

The offer comes after the North claimed to have conducted the first test of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) earlier this month, and said it had mastered the technology to mount a nuclear warhead on the missile. South Korea and the United States, its main ally, dispute the claim.

“Talks and cooperation between the two Koreas to ease tension and bring about peace on the Korean peninsula will be instrumental for pushing forth a mutual, virtuous cycle for inter-Korea relations and North Korea’s nuclear problem,” the South’s Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon told a news briefing.

The South Korean defence ministry proposed talks with the North on July 21 at Tongilgak to stop all activities that fuel tension at the military demarcation line.

Tongilgak is a North Korean building at the Panmunjom truce village on the border used for previous inter-Korea talks. The last such talks were held in December 2015.

Cho also urged the restoration of military and government hotlines across the border, which had been cut by the North last year in response to the South imposing economic sanctions after a nuclear test by Pyongyang. In all, the North has conducted five nuclear tests and numerous missile tests.

The South also proposed separate talks by the rival states’ Red Cross organisations to resume a humanitarian project to reunite families separated during the 1950-53 Korean War in closely supervised events held over a few days.

The South Korean Red Cross suggested talks be held on Aug. 1, with possible reunions over the Korean thanksgiving Chuseok holiday, which falls in October this year. (rtr)

SYDNEY - Australia’s military will be more readily deployed to respond to “terrorist incidents” on home soil under proposed changes to laws announced by the government on Monday.

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said state and territory police forces would remain as the first response to such incidents, but the military would offer support to enhance their capabilities.

Under the proposed law changes, state and territory governments would be able to call for military help at any time after a “terror incident” has been declared. Previously, the military could only be called upon once police concluded they could no longer deal with an incident.

Turnbull said future attacks would likely remain the responsibility of the police but the military could also assist in incidents such as a central Sydney cafe siege in December 2014 in which two hostages were killed.

A coronial inquiry found in May that police failed to respond quickly enough to end the 16-hour siege, which has been described as Australia’s deadliest incident inspired by Islamic State extremists. The gunman, who was killed by police, had no direct ties to the militant group.

“In the current threat environment, it is most likely that a terrorist attack will use simple methodologies, a knife, a gun, a vehicle, and the attack itself could be over in minutes,” Turnbull told reporters in Sydney.

“In worse case scenarios, the ADF (Australian Defence Force) has a range of specialist capabilities to resolve complex terrorist incidents, especially protracted sieges

or hostage situations,” he said.

The Sydney cafe siege and a series of other “lone wolf” attacks have thrown police tactics, and Australia’s overall response to potential security incidents, into sharp focus.

Australian police have since changed tactics to become ready to end cases of potential hostagetaking more quickly, and to shoot suspects in “terrorist-related” incidents.

In June, police also began installing concrete bollards in pedestrian thoroughfares in Australia’s two largest cities, Sydney and Melbourne, to guard against possible vehicle attacks such as those seen recently in Europe and the United States. (rtr)

High-speed Hyperloop project ready for key test in Nevada

NEVADA - Engineers will soon conduct a crucial test of a futuristic technology championed by entrepreneur Elon Musk that seeks to revolutionize transportation by sending passengers and cargo packed into pods through an intercity system of vacuum tubes.

Hyperloop One, the Los-Angeles-based company developing the technology, is gearing up to send a 28-foot-long (8.5 meter-long) pod gliding across a set of tracks in a test run in Nevada in the next few weeks, spokeswoman Marcy Simon said.

Hyperloop One is working to develop a technical vision proposed by Musk, the founder of rocket maker SpaceX and electric car company Tesla Motors. In 2013, he suggested sending pods with passengers through giant vacuum tubes between Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Hyperloop aims to achieve speeds of 250 miles per hour (402 km per hour) in its upcoming phase of testing.

As it gears up for that experiment, the company on Wednesday released the results from a May 12 test in the Nevada desert. A Hyperloop One sled on wheels for the first time coasted above a track using electromagnetic propulsion and magnetic levitation, Simon said.

It levitated for 5.3 seconds in a vacuum-sealed tube and reached speeds of 70 mph (113 kph), the company said in a statement. By comparison, another test by Hyperloop One that made national headlines last year was done on an open-air track, not in the tube, a key to achieving high speeds.

Backers of the project envision the pods reaching speeds of 750 mph (1,200 kph), but skeptics say the hyperloop idea faces real-world challenges ranging from obtaining construction permits to making turns at jet speed.

Hyperloop One has raised $160 million in funding and has touted the technology’s potential as a rapidtransit option.

“Hyperloop One will move people and things faster than at any other time in the world,” Shervin Pishevar, co-founder and executive chairman of Hyperloop One, said in a statement. (rtr)

London museum installs whale skeleton

LONDON - London’s Natural History Museum has installed a four-and-a-half-ton blue whale skeleton to tower over the heads of visitors, replacing the remains of a muchloved diplodocus known as Dippy.

The whale’s bones, which were bought in 1892 for 250 pounds, have been suspended mid-air with the head lowered and jaw gaping as if it is about to scoop up tourists.

The 82-foot long skeleton will greet people as they enter the building’s Hintze Hall from Friday - a new display highlighting the institution’s conservation work.

To overcome the congestion problem in Kuta and South Kuta, the Head of the Badung Transportation and Infocom Agency, A.A. Rai Yuda Dharma, said that his agency will establish a number of monitoring posts at some crossroads such as at the intersection of Jalan Majapahit, Kuta Galleria and Jalan Setiabudi. “Later on, three to four officers on duty will be assigned from afternoon until night,” he said.

Especially for Kuta area, he stated that traffic management and engineering has been discussed and even tested. However, it must be suspended for a while considering it has not been accepted by the public. He admitted that congestion issues are not only influenced by the high passing vehicle traffic but also by the number of vehicles parked on the shoulder of the road. Related to this matter, the joint team under coordination of municipal police with the members of transportation agency, public protection, people’s empowerment agency (LPM), police and military personnel has provided coaching and reprimands. Dozens of Kutuh villagers not yet enjoy electricity

BANGLI — Dozens of household heads at Kutuh village, Kintamani, so far still have not enjoyed the electricity. This happens because the PLN network has not been able to reach the area occupied by dozens of household heads.

Headman of Kutuh, Wayan Pasek, said on Sunday (Jul. 16) that so far there are still approximately 30 household heads at his village that have not enjoyed electricity.

Dozens of them are scattered at two villages namely the hamlet of Angansari and Kutuh.

“So far, they have not been able to enjoy electricity because the location of their residence is in remote area, some sit in hill areas and field areas,” he said.

For home lighting at night, those families have been forced to rent / connect from the home of other residents who have been served by PLN connection. “The payment is based on the bulb in use and will be paid monthly,” he explained.

In addition to renting, some other residents who have not received the electricity connection are also admitted to still use traditional lighting equipment such as lantern.

Pasek added that to overcome the electricity issue, his author-

ity has proposed for the help of solar power plant (PLTS) to provincial government. So far, provincial government has followed up the proposal by making data collection. He said the 30 families having not got PLN’s power connection will possibly get solar electricity assistance in 2018. “Possibly, they can get in 2018. Right now, the help of solar power plant is handled by provincial government instead of

district government previously,” he explained.

He revealed that in 2016, approximately 60 household heads at his village already got the help of solar power plant from the government gradually. Those families averagely live in remote areas from village center. So far, the solar power plant given by the government stays in good condition and can be utilized by the community. (kmb40)

MANGUPURA — Belok Sidan tourism village located in Petang subdistrict develops agriculture-based tourism village. Although it has been designated as tourism village with a decree in 2013, villagers do not abandon their farms. Local residents remain persistent to farm because the farm can still give them pretty good results.

Various types of agricultural plants are grown in the area. Their flagship commodities are asparagus and vegetables. Moreover, the asparagus of Belok Sidan village once achieved the first champion in Asia. The commodities cultivated include tangerine, crystal guava, red guava, lemon, chili, et cetera. In addition to agriculture, local people develop livestock farms, especially cattle.

Due to many types of agriculture developed in the fertile soil, villagers of Belok Sidan have established several groups of farmers. There are groups of breeders, tangerine group, crystal guava group and so forth.

“What we emphasize here is that farmers remain to actively do farming. With the tourism village we develop, in addition to getting agricultural produce, guests can also look around our farms and pick our agricultural produce. Surely, guests want to get something at the location,” said Ketut Sueta, Chief of Belok Sidan tourism village recently.

Consisting of nine hamlets with 1,800 households, approximately 85 percent of the Belok Sidan population is working as farmers. However, only a small

portion of them are land owners, while most of them are sharecroppers. With an area of 3,200 square meters, on average each farmer can manage half to one hectare of land.

In the meantime, community figures such as headman, chief of customary village, hamlet chief and subak chief are involved in the management of the tourism village. Thus, any program made will be easy to run. Sidan tourism village is managed by villagers not individually, because the concept of tourism village at Belok Sidan is intended for the welfare of society in general. To that end, people also build village-owned enterprise (BUMDes) to enable the management of tourism village to run well.

Precisely, at Lawak hamlet of Belok Sidan is also made trekking path of both short distance and long distance. Guests can enjoy nature in mountainous area and farm by bike ride. Commenced in 1997 from Lawak hamlet, the tourism village grows by degrees until today. It also built Bali Ecovillage in cooperation with investors, so the results are divided. Bali Ecovillage is a tourist cottage equipped with a restaurant coming with natural atmosphere of mountains. It provides tourism and overnight packages.

Sueta said that his management does not want many guest visits. “We just hope a few guests to come as long as the guests have money. Our room rate is IDR 1.5 million per night,” he said. Local villagers prefer quality guests because many guests will also disrupt the farmland. (kmb42)

BANGLI - The phenomenon of sulfuric bursts re-emerging in the waters of Lake Batur, Kintamani, since a few days ago is now widespread. After thousands of fish died at Dukuh hamlet, Abang Batu Dinding, Kintamani, causing losses estimated to reach billions of rupiahs, now it’s the turn for the fish in floating fish cage (KJA) owned by fish farmers of Terunyan village that died from this burst. As a result, fish farmers can only surrender to see the fish having been decent to harvest and to be fingerlings floating in the lake water near fish cage.

The losses are estimated to reach hundreds of millions of rupiahs.

A fish farmer from Terunyan village, I Nengah Guantara, revealed that sulfuric burst at Terunyan region has occurred since two days ago. He said that almost all fish in his own floating fish cage along with that of other farmers died from sulfuric bursts. “The fish in each cage almost died, including the fingerlings due to the phenomenon of sulfuric burst,” said Guantara on Sunday (Jul. 16).

Guantara added that the dead fish amounted to be few tons because all the fish existing in each hole almost entirely died. Each hole contains approximately 1,0001,500 heads. So, it is just multiplied with dozens of the floating fish cages, the dead fish reached few tons.

“The fish are already worth harvesting. But some fingerlings are also dead. Due to this condition, I suffer losses up to tens of millions of rupiahs, while if calculated thoroughly with the number of fish cage the losses reach hundreds of millions of rupiahs,” said Guantara.

fish farmers he has taken out the fish carcasses to be thrown away.

However, there are still some fish carcasses remaining to float in the middle of the lake and on the lakeside.

“We have taken out the dead fish in the cage for disposal, but some fish carcasses are still floating in the lake and the lakeside.

I’ve surrendered to this condition because sulfuric burst is a natural phenomenon,” said Guantara.

In the meantime, the Head of the Bangli Agriculture, Food Security and Fishery Agency, I Wayan Sukartana, said that such sulfuric burst in Lake Batur has occurred since July 12. On that condition, his agency has made surveillance effort including checking the lake water content at two locations on Thursday (Jul. 13). Result of the water sample taken at Kedisan village indicated that Dissolved Oxygen (DO) rate is 6.47, temperature at 25o Celsius, pH 5 and sulfuric content of 0.04. Then, the water sample taken at Abang Batu Dinding has DO rate of 3, temperature of 25o Celsius, pH 5 and sulfuric content of 0.08.

“From the results, the oxygen conditions in the water are very low and the water content is below normal with high sulfuric content.

This is the reason why fish in the lake and floating fish cages of farmers died,” he said.

Sukartana added that to avoid the death of fish from continuing, he requested that all activities in the lake should be reduced. Besides, the residents must continue to monitor the direction of sulfur.

“If possible, the floating fish cages having not been exposed to sulfuric influence should be harvested earlier so as to reduce losses,” hoped Sukartana. (kmb41)

Singer Aaron Carter arrested in Georgia GEORGIA - Singer Aaron Carter was arrested on Saturday in Georgia and charged with driving under the influence and possession of marijuana, according to media reports.

Carter, 29, was arrested alongside girlfriend Madison Parker, the reports said.

ABC News, citing the Habersham County sheriff’s office, said the pair were arrested in Georgia on Saturday night. Other reports said Carter was pulled over driving erratically.

Earlier on Saturday the singer said on Twitter he would not make a scheduled concert in Kansas City due to “transportation issues.”

BBC names first female “Doctor Who”

LONDON - The lead role in British sci-fi television series “Doctor Who” will be played by a woman for the first time in its more than 50-year history, the BBC said on Sunday.

After much speculation over the role, Britain’s public broadcaster said 35-year-old British actress Jodie Whittaker, who starred in the award-winning television crime drama series “Broadchurch”, will play the 13th Doctor.

The news was announced in a one-minute video clip broadcast on television after the Wimbledon tennis men’s final match, showing the actress walking through a forest wearing a long coat and hiding her face with a hood until the final moment.

“I always knew I wanted the Thirteenth Doctor to be a woman

and we’re thrilled to have secured our number one choice. Her audition for The Doctor simply blew us all away. Jodie is an in-demand, funny, inspiring, super-smart force of nature and will bring loads of wit, strength and warmth to the role,” said Chris Chibnall, the show’s new Head Writer and Executive Producer.

The Doctor, who travels through time in what from the outside appears to be a blue police telephone box, has the ability to regenerate, allowing a number of actors to play the role since the series was first broadcast in 1963.

Whittaker will replace Peter Capaldi, who took on the role in 2013 amid an increasing clamour that it should go to a woman.

His final episode will be the 2017 Christmas special. Previous “Time Lords” include Tom Baker, Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant.

Whittaker said it was “completely overwhelming” to be taking on the role and she wanted to tell fans of the series “not to be scared” by her gender.

“As an actor, as a human, as someone who wants to continually push themselves and challenge themselves, and not be boxed in by what you’re told you can and can’t be. It feels incredible,” she said. (rtr)

Biggest snowfall in decades blankets Chile’s capital

SANTIAGO — Chile’s capital was blanketed this weekend by the biggest snowfall in decades, with some residents grumbling about blocked roads and downed power lines, while others made snowmen or tossed snowballs. Tens of thousands of people had their power knocked out in Santiago’s metropolitan area with some parts receiving up to 40 centimeters (16 inches) of the white stuff, according to the National Emergency Office.

Residents woke up Saturday to find their city covered with snow and by late Sunday thousands of homes still lacked electricity. Andres Rebolledo of the energy ministry said power should be restored by Sunday night or Monday. A worker at a Santiago hospital died when he slipped and hit his head. Chile’s Meteorological Office said it was the biggest snowfall in the capital in 46 years.More than 280,000 people have reportedly been left without power in Santiago.

A security guard at a medical

facility died from an apparent heart attack while trying to clear snow, according to reports, while trees struck electricity lines.

And two other people - a 15year-old girl and her grandmother - were thought to have been injured after they suffered electric shocks from a damaged cable. The snow has also led to treacherous driving conditions.

Meanwhile, children enjoyed snowball fights and built snowmen for the first time in their

lives. One resident said: “Yes, the snow fell but also it feels like a magical atmosphere here in Bella (the Bellavista neighbourhood) and in Santiago generally. No one expected it.”Another said: “Incredible. I remember more or less in 70-something (a year in the 1970s). It was the last time that it snowed in Santiago and it looked precious, Santiago, like this. “Look at how it’s snowing, the little cakes of snow, marvellous. It is impressive.”(ap)
