Oprah’s advice stuck with ‘Wrinkle’ star Storm Reid

LOS ANGELES - She hasn’t yet turned 15 but child star Storm Reid is wise enough to have picked up some life lessons already -- the most important of them from Oprah Winfrey.

The talk show legend and media tycoon became a mentor for the Atlanta-born newcomer on the set of Disney sci-fi fantasy “A Wrinkle in Time,” which came out in March.

“She said, ‘Don’t waste energy on things you can’t change in life when you could be using that energy on something else positive.’ It’s my life motto,” Reid told AFP. Speaking on the red carpet at the MTV Movie and Television Awards in Los Angeles, Reid said she “fangirled a lot” when she met Winfrey, who was raised in poverty and became America’s first black multi-billionaire.

“My head exploded! And when I walked in the room she knew my name,” Reid said of their first encounter before filming started in Los Angeles in November 2016.

“She was like, ‘Ah - Storm,’ and I was like, ‘Oh my God, she knows my name.’ I was freaking out.”

Unkind critics might point out that Oprah’s advice would work well in the case of “Wrinkle,” which was panned by critics and made losses estimated at up to $186 million.

Reid, though, described the experience starring in her first blockbuster as “amazing,” adding that “to see my film impact so many people was really incredible.”

Next up is HBO young adult drama series “Euphoria,” in which Reid co-stars with Zendaya (“Spider-Man: Homecoming,” “The Greatest Showman”).

“It’s basically about teenage drama, love, lies and drugs,” Reid said.

“Even though it’s a heavy topic, I feel like it underlines what’s going on in the world right now.”

The awards, hosted this year by comic Tiffany Haddish, have been taking a sideways look at Hollywood since 1992, handing out “golden popcorn” statuettes to honorees.

The nominees are decided by producers and MTV executives, while the winners are chosen by the public, who vote online.

The annual celebration of youth pop culture expanded last year to include television, and became a live show, but MTV reverted to prerecording this time around.

Filming took place Saturday in a hangar at Santa Monica Airport, and MTV is keeping the winners top secret until the ceremony airs nationally on Monday.

“Black Panther,” the breakthrough superhero film that has become the ninth highest-grossing movie of all time, led the nominations with seven.

Placing second with six nominations was “Stranger Things,” the Netflix series about supernatural occurrences in a small town in Indiana. (afp)

NEW YORK - Music’s most famous couple Beyonce and Jay-Z pulled a surprise by releasing a joint album, a long-rumored collaboration that celebrates their marital passion and black identity.

The pop diva and hip-hop superstar announced the album, “Everything is Love,” from the stage in London as they wrapped up the British leg that opened a global tour.

The album came out late Saturday exclusively on Jay-Z’s fledgling Tidal streaming service and is not available on Spotify -- a far larger platform, which Beyonce disses on the album in a string of F-bombs.

The couple also put out an elaborately choreographed video that takes place inside the Louvre museum in Paris for a song off the album, “Apeshit.”

The video opens with the couple standing regally in front of the “Mona Lisa”

-- Jay-Z in a light green double-breasted suit, Beyonce in a lavender pantsuit -- and features a squad of scantily clad dancers moving sensually in front of Jacques Louis David’s “The Coronation of Napoleon.”

Driven by warm, sultry soul with a largely hiphop cadence, “Everything is Love” marries the styles of the two artists but is more consistent with the recent direction of Jay-Z. The album shatters any lingering innocence from the early days of Beyonce, with the singer of “Say My Name” and “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)” generous in the details of her sex life with Jay-Z. The ultra-modern 44,899 capacity stadium stands as a symbol of Russia’s successful bid to host football’s biggest tournament but also one of its major concerns -- what happens to the venue when the World Cup circus moves on?

TABANAN - Tourist visits to Tanah Lot showed an increase during the Eid holidays. In addition to the increase in visits, the atmosphere also became more crowded than usual days because it coincided with the piodalan or festival at Tanah Lot Temple so many pilgrims also come to pray.

Operations Manager of Tanah Lot Attraction, Ketut Toya Adnyana, explained the piodalan lasted until Saturday (Jun. 15). Baby photographing needs patience to success

Getting a smiling and laughing baby expression is very difficult. On that account, when photographing our baby we should be good at attracting the baby’s attention so it wants to express and see the camera.

One of the ways to draw the baby’s attention is by a funny toy so the baby looks happy. No less important thing in the photo shooting is that we are also obliged to invite parents to seduce their baby so it can smile or laugh. Where to go?

Unlike Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Penida is large. It is the largest of Bali’s three sister islands and to really explore and understand it, you’ll need to spend a few days here. Visit Crystal Bay for snorkelling; it’s better if you go in the morning for clear, crisp weather and calm waters. Then you can visit the very Instagrammable Kelingking Beach for one of the region’s most breathtaking views.

Broken Beach was a cave that lost its roof over time and is located at the bottom of a cliff which cannot be accessed over land. You’ll enjoy this panoramic view from the top of a cliff. Sometimes, you’ll be able to spot some rays or turtles swimming in the dazzling blue water that’s as clear as glass. Angel’s Billabong is a definite don’t miss! A natural infinity pool, it’s only 200 metres away from Broken Beach and the water, which meets the sea is unbelievably clear and refreshing, great for a swim! Temeling Waterfall is another great attraction; to get to the waterfall.

48 hours in Dresden, Germany

DRESDEN - Dresden, situated in Eastern Germany on the border of the Czech Republic, is perhaps best known for being heavily bombed during the Second World War. The British/American aerial bombing attack in 1945 caused a firestorm that swept through the city centre, destroying many of Dresden’s most iconic buildings and resulting in the deaths of nearly 25,000 people.

Over the course of 60 years, the Old Town has been painstakingly rebuilt from the rubble; its iconic buildings recreated brick by brick. Many of the city’s half a million residents contributed to Dresden’s restoration by volunteering to clear the rubble, which continued well into the 90s.

Nowadays, the scars of War are barely noticeable and Dresden has become one of Germany’s must-visit destinations. The River Elbe snakes through the city, dividing the traditional “Old Town” and buzzing “Neutstadt” (New Town), which has one of the liveliest nightlife scenes in Eastern Germany.

On the left bank of the Elbe is Dresden’s Altstadt (Old Town), which can be explored entirely on foot. In the sum-

mer months, the sound of classical music fills the main square – the buskers here are exceptional. As you walk along the cobbled streets admiring the Renaissance, Baroque and 19th century architecture, it is hard to believe that many of these grand buildings are reproductions. Among them is the Dresden Frauenkirche, an 18th century Lutheran church that stands proudly in the centre of the Altstadt.

Also known as The Church of our Lady, it features one of the largest domes in Europe and is a spectacular example of Protestant sacred architecture. During the bombings of 1945 the church dome collapsed, and for 50 years the ruins served as a war memorial. Restoration was finally completed in 2005, using 8000 of the original stones, and the Frauenkirche now stands a symbol of reconciliation between former warring nations.

Just around the corner from the Frauenkirche is a 101m long mural depicting the “Procession of Princes” – 35 rulers belonging to one of Saxony’s ruling family, who governed the region 800 years ago. The mural is composed of 25,000 Meissen porcelain tiles and presents a dramatic and rousing picture of medieval Saxony. The mural was spared from the brunt of the bombings, but still suffered serious smoke damage and some 700 tiles had to be repaired or replaced.

There is one modern gem that should not be missed.

Albertinum is a modern art museum on Brühl’s Terrace that houses a former courtyard, creating a huge covered space for exhibitions and events. The museum hosts both permanent and temporary exhibitions, including the New Masters Gallery and Sculpture Collection.

The size and scale of the building creates an atmosphere of glorious tranquility and the whole museum is a pleasure to explore. Don’t miss the sculpture hall, which features a visually stunning collection of classical modern sculptures.

Get there a couple of hours before closing time and you may have the museum to yourself – bliss!

Across the river is another museum that is really worth a visit: the Bundeswehr Military History Museum. Located in the Albertstadt district, the former armoury represents the 700 year history of the German armed forces. The original building has been updated with a striking modern attachment in the form of a huge glass arrowhead, which doubles as a gallery space and viewing platform.

Highlights of the museum include an unflinching exhibition on drug use by both the German and allied armies during World War II – crystal meth was apparently used by many German soldiers, while Benzedrine was the drug of choice of the British army. There is also an interesting exhibition on animals used in war, from elephants to carrier pigeons. (net)

DENPASAR — Getting medical treatment has been notoriously expensive and so has been the in vitro fertilization (IVF). Many technological advances in the field of health having not existed in Indonesia previously have now been available. In terms of cost, they can be cheaper in Indonesia.

Chairman of the Indonesia Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (POGI) of Bali Chapter, Putu Doster Mahayasa, said the cost to participate in this IVF program is IDR 50 million to IDR 70 million, while overseas it can cost more than IDR 100 million. It does not include the cost of transportation and many others. No wonder the IVF program is more followed by couples from the upper middle class because the cost is expensive.

The cost is relative because most costs are spent on buying drugs used at the stimulation stage. The drugs are used to stimulate hormones to produce at least 4 or 5 eggs. “The hormonal drug is expensive. The dosage is determined by the age of the woman. The older of the women the more drugs used and the higher the cost will be,” he explained. In addition, the more teams involved will make the cost higher.

The expensive cost is not necessarily accompanied by a 100 percent success rate. Theoretically, the success rate to have a baby through this IVF program is only 40 percent. So, this program tends

to be only followed by couples of upper middle class.

“Unguaranteed success happens because the technology is only one of the ways. Until now, the unanswered points are implantation of the embryo attachment to the uterine wall. Actually fertilization of the eggs has given good results, but after putting into the womb, they do not stick. As consequence, no pregnancy happens. This is not completely answered by science,” he said.

So, there is no guarantee that IVF program can have baby. But at least, with the existence of this technology, there is another solution for women wishing to get pregnant.

IVF technology has long been known in Indonesia.

In Bali, it began to be introduced in 2001 at Sanglah Hospital. Before implemented in Bali, this IVF technology had been done in Jakarta in the 1990s. Today, Bali also has developed this program in several hospitals such as the Prima Medika Hospital, BROS and Puri Bunda Hospital.

The number of couples facing difficulty to get pregnant tends to increase due to various factors. One of them is free premarital sex that can harm female organ. Women’s fertility tends to reduce as they are getting older. SINGARAJA — Eid prayers in Buleleng on Friday (Jun. 15) took place solemnly. In addition to performing the prayers, the Muslims in North Bali filled the holiday moment with a number of unique traditions. One of them is that Muslims at Kampong Singaraja routinely held the megibung or communal eating tradition. It is said the tradition poses a legacy of Solo, Central Java which remains to survive until now in Buleleng.

Besides, this tradition also strengthens the ties of friendship between Muslim and Hindu people chiefly those from royal family.

Before the megibung tradition, from the morning the Muslims carry out Eid prayers at the local mosque. Furthermore, they listen to the sermon by appointed leader.

Then, the people mutually visit and apologize on the day of ‘victory’ after a full month of fasting.

People then sit down in a row in the courtyard of the mosque. In front of their seating, rice with side dishes and drinking water are ready to serve. After everything is completed, the megibung tradition begins. This dish is donated by every household head.

Aside from enjoying the dishes made together by citizens, people return to make mutual visit to maintain social relationship in the feast. Inevitably, this situation becomes an atmosphere full of kinship among the Muslims.

Moreover, senior figure of Kenginan Palace, A.A. Ngurah Parwata Panji, together with Chairman of the Buleleng House of Representatives, Gede Supriatna, were present and mingled with the invitees of the megibung.

A Muslim figure as well as headman of Kampong Kajanan, Agus Murzani, said he definitely does not know who started the

megibung tradition. Nevertheless, he believed the tradition does not only strengthen friendship among the Muslims, but also preserves the heritage of Balinese cultural traditions. This happens because the tolerance between Islam and Hinduism since the days of the Buleleng kingdom has been well established, so that his party with other residents is committed to preserving the megibung tradition at Singaraja village.

“Our residents are mostly from Solo. In the city, it is called bancakan while in Bali is megibung.

This is an expression of gratitude for the graces of God to our citizens. Similarly, we maintain tolerance with the Hindus, especially the royal family having bequeathed brotherhood between Muslims and Hindus,” he said.

Senior figure of Kanginan Palace, A.A Ngurah Parwata Panji, said the tolerance or cultural acculturation between Muslims and Hindus at Kampong Singaraja is ancestral heritage from the past kingdom. To that end, as the next generation, he invited both Muslims and Hindus to keep unity and friendship in preserving the ancestral heritage. “Every religion holidays of Muslim, our royal family is invited and vice versa. This is a heritage and we invite the younger generation to keep and preserve it,” he explained.

Similar opinion was revealed by Chairman of the Buleleng House of Representatives, Gede Supriatna.

He invited to preserve the tradition as it contains philosophy of religious teaching and tolerance between the Hinduism and Islam.

All this time, he assessed the relationship between Muslims and Hindus has run well. Moreover, the Muslims in the region have settled into Buleleng natives. (kmb38)

A young entrepreneur, I Kadek Alit Pujawan, from Sidembunut hamlet, Cempaga, Bangli, has proved this. Having started in 2014, today his business of customary clothing has been growing rapidly.

When interviewed by Bali Post on Saturday (Jun. 16), I Kadek Alit Pujawan said that he had learned business since attending high school in Bangli in 2011.

After graduating from high school in 2014, he finally decided to open customary clothing business. “I used to be a model. Previously, I had time to study a management related to this business in Denpasar.

After that, I got an idea considering there is an opportunity of customary fashion business in Bangli.

Finally, I ventured to open this business,” he said.

According to Alit, when opening the business he encountered a capital problem. However, due to very high intention and enthusiasm to open a clothing business, he borrowed capital to cooperative and People’s Business Credit (KUR). In addition to borrowing, he used his first salary when working at hotel

to start his business. “To increase the merchandise, I take advantage the sales results during this time,” he said.

In 2015, the Bangli Industry and Trade Agency embraced local young entrepreneurs. At that time, he occupied the second position as one of the young entrepreneurs with outstanding performance in Bangli. In addition, he also successfully achieved the seventh rank of self-employed young entrepreneurs in the Bali Province through a program of the Ministry of SMEs in cooperation with in Bali TV some time ago.

This 25-year-old man added that to keep his customary fashion business growing he must comply with the current trend. As the development of fashion continues to happen every time, he must always follow the times. Otherwise, it becomes very difficult to expand

By shirt painting, Ketut Teler earns up to IDR 10 million monthly

BANGLI - Painting creativity is not limited to make expression on canvas media.

However, it can take advantage of other media such as shirts. If pursued more seriously, painting on the shirt media can turn out to be a promising business opportunity. This has been proved by I Ketut Teler, a painter from Tembuku Kaja hamlet, Tembuku.

Starting from a try to meet the order of ogoh-ogoh (papier mâché demon) painting on t-shirt medium, this 46-year-old man is now seriously pursuing the business of selling painting clothes. From this business, Teler is able to reap a turnover of up to IDR 10 million per month.

When met recently, Teler said he had pursued this painting business for a long time. However, his art creativity at that time was only expressed on canvas. Malaysia power shift hits China infrastructure drive KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia was once a loyal partner in China’s globe-spanning infrastructure drive but a new government is now pledging to review Beijing-backed projects, threatening key links in the much-vaunted initiative.

Kuala Lumpur’s previous regime, led by scandal-mired Najib Razak, had warm ties with China and signed a string of deals for Beijing-funded projects, including a major rail link and a deep-sea port.

But the long-ruling coalition was unexpectedly turfed out of power last month by voters disgusted at allegations of corruption and angered at rising living costs.

Critics say many agreements lacked transparency, fuelling suspicions they were struck in exchange for help in paying off debts from a financial scandal which ultimately helped bring down Najib’s regime.

The new government, led by political heavyweight Mahathir Mohamad, has pledged to review Chinese deals seen as dubious, calling into question Malaysia’s status as one of Beijing’s most cooperative partners in its infrastructure push.

China’s ambitious initiative to revive ancient Silk Road trading routes with a global network of ports, roads and railways -- dubbed “One Belt, One Road” -- was launched in 2013 and is the economic crown jewel of President Xi

Jinping’s presidency.

Malaysia, along with Beijing ally Cambodia, were seen as bright spots in Southeast Asia, with projects in other countries often facing problems, from land acquisition to drawn-out negotiations with governments.

“Malaysia under Najib moved quickly to approve and implement projects,” Murray Hiebert, a senior associate from think-tank the Center for Strategic and International Studies, told AFP. Chinese foreign direct investment into Malaysia stood at just 0.8 percent of total net FDI inflows in 2008, but that figure had risen to 14.4 percent by 2016, according to a study from Singapore’s ISEASYusof Ishak Institute.

However, Hiebert said it was “widely assumed” that Malaysia was striking quick deals with China in the hope of getting help to cover debts from sovereign wealth fund 1MDB. LONDON - Stung by an attack on Muslims in London a year ago, Britain is facing a growing threat from far-right extremists fuelled by online hate speech, forcing the authorities to react.

In a country hit by five attacks in the space of six months in 2017 that killed 36 people, “the biggest threat is from Islamist terrorism”, Home Secretary Sajid Javid said earlier this month.

But “extreme right-wing terrorism is also an increasing threat”, the interior minister added as he unveiled a new counter-terror strategy.

A government report found that four attacks have been carried out in Britain over the past five years “by lone actors motivated to varying degrees by extreme right-wing ideologies”.

Among them was Darren Osborne, a 48-year-old from Cardiff, who a year ago on Tuesday drove his rented van into a group of

Muslim worshippers near Finsbury Park Mosque in north London, killing one man and injuring 12 others.

The father-of-four’s radicalisation ramped up in a matter of weeks, fed by compulsive reading of hate material online.

In February, Mark Rowley, the then head of counter-terrorism policing, said that four extreme right-wing plots were foiled last year and described the trend as “worrying”.

Matthew Henman, from the Jane’s Terrorism and Insurgency Centre database, told AFP: “There is a clear increase in both the tempo of attacks conducted by right-wing extremists and in the seriousness, lethality, of such violence.”

- Emergence of neo-Nazi groups In recent decades, extreme right-wing activity in Britain had been confined to small, established groups with an older membership,

which promoted anti-immigration and white supremacist views but presented a low risk to national security.

But the emergence of the neoNazi group National Action in 2014, and similar fringe outfits like Generation Identity, has helped forge a new, younger pool of extremists, according to the “2018 State of Hate” report by the antiracism organisation Hope Not Hate.

The report’s “online hate” section cited prominent British figures among those with the biggest reach on social media.

They included Stephen Lennon -- known as Tommy Robinson -- founder of the English Defence League, which he left in 2013.

They also included Paul Joseph Watson, whose videos have been viewed hundreds of thousands of times, and commentator Katie Hopkins, who in 2015 compared migrants to “cockroaches”. (afp)

- ‘Huge cultural gaps’ During the Sunshine Policy, a previous period of warmer ties, South Korean conglomerate Hyundai poured hundreds of millions of dollars into a tourist resort for Southerners to visit the scenic Mount Kumgang.

But the trips came to an abrupt halt when a North Korean soldier shot dead a woman from the South who strayed into a forbidden zone. Many South Korean firms set up operations in the joint-venture Kaesong Industrial Complex where they employed cheap labour from the North, but Seoul closed the project in 2016 over Pyongyang’s weapons programmes.

Egyptian telecom firm Orascom poured hundreds of millions of dollars into setting up the North’s first mobile phone network, Koryolink, only for the government to set up a rival operator of its own.

“Our organisation has had much interest recently from investors interested in market research as well as face-to-face matchmaking with potential DPRK ministries and future partners,” he told AFP, using the official acronym for North Korea.

But the North has not officially embraced the market. At the last ruling party congress, Kim decried the “filthy wind of bourgeois liberty and ‘reform’ and ‘openness’ blowing in our neighbourhood”.

China has taken North Korean officials on study tours of Beijing, Shanghai and its coal-rich provinces to try to encourage them to follow its example, and diplomats say it is offering detailed development planning.

But they add that Pyongyang is wary of being too dependent on Beijing, and prefers to look to Vietnam for an example of how a smaller Communist country has been able to adopt capitalism while not weakening the authorities’ hold on power.

North Korea does have some advantages, says Gareth Leather, senior Asia economist for Capital Economics, pointing out natural resources including zinc, magnesite, iron and copper, low-cost labour, and an advantageous location. But even if sanctions are lifted, he said, “it’s basically a police state and you have a long way to go to North Korea becoming a normal economy”. “It’s going to take a very brave investor to venture in again.” (afp)

Tradition of Barong Ngunya at Serokadan Village

Virtually all villages have unique traditions denoting the heritage from their ancestors.

Residents of Serokadan customary village, Susut, Bangli, for instance, regularly organize Ngelawang Agung or Barong Ngunya (street show) every Kuningan Day. Chief of Serokadan customary village, I Dewa Gede Oka, revealed that Ngelawang Agung is indeed held every Kuningan Day. It is different from ngelawang in general where the ngelawang agung held on Kuningan feast involves the whole sanctified effigies of the village such as eight sacred barongs, Ratu Lingsir, Ratu Gede Anom, Ratu Mas, Ratu Gede Tameng and Ratu Gede Alit. “The Ratu Lingsir in particular is the oldest owned by the village. It is believed to have reached thousands of years. This tradition aims to purify the environment from negative energies,” he said.

The procession of ngelawang agung, said Dewa Gede Oka, is held at 13:00 until the afternoon. It is started with a ceremony followed by the sacred barongs coming out simultaneously and then gathers somewhere. He explained the ngelawang agung is not implemented by visiting one home to another, but walk to the ends of the village in accordance with the points of the compass. Local people call the procession nyatur desa.

“After doing nyatur desa, the eight sacred barongs gather in the middle (catus pata). Usually, the ngelawang agung is witnessed by the whole community around and outside the village,” he added. (kmb)

The US president showed Kim a movie of bright lights, high-speed trains and soaring tower blocks -- pitching a future that could be possible if Pyongyang gives up its weapons.

Optimists say that with mineral wealth, cheap labour, and a helpful geographical location, the North has huge potential.

But the history of overseas firms who have tried to set up operations in the isolated, impoverished country is a long and sorry one.

Rules that can change on a whim, bills that are never paid, and the threat of expropriation hang over foreigners who step into the wildest of wild east investment destinations.

For now, dozens of restrictions apply under the various sanctions regimes imposed on the North over its nuclear ambitions.

Joint ventures are banned by the UN Security Council, the European Union blocks financial transfers of more than 5,000 euros, and US regulations mean international banks are loath to enable transactions of any kind –- so much so that even humanitarian organisations struggle to fund their activities.

And even if they are lifted, there are major challenges to working in the North.

Infrastructure is poor, and analysts say corruption is widespread.

Crucially, said a diplomatic source in Pyongyang, “legal guarantees for business are very weak”.

Ritual Meaning Behind Mesuryak Tradition

Celebration of Kuningan Day at Bongan Gede Hamlet, Bongan, Tabanan, returned to be accompanied with mesuryak tradition on Saturday (Jun. 9). It took place lively. The procession began around 09:00 until 11:00 local time marked with prayers at each resident’s house compound. After that, it was resumed with worship at village trinity temples and the merajan (family temple).

This worship is meant to invoke salvation to God as well as the ancestors believed to be at home during the celebration of Galungan until Kuningan.

The mesuryak is then proceeded to bring all the ritual paraphernalia such as the offerings, including the one symbolizing the Raja Dewata (ancestors) to the front gate of each house compound.

Furthermore, temple priests or the elders chanted the prayers closed with mesuryak procession. Each family provided provisions in the form of coins and banknotes. The money was thrown into the air and then grabbed by residents. Girls and boys scrambled for the money. From the observation, every Kuningan Day, about tens of millions of rupiahs are dedicated by the citizens of Bongan Gede hamlet for the mesuryak tradition.

while cheering (mesuryak) and throwing money into the air. Then, it is scrambled by many people,” he said.

The amount of money used in the mesuryak varies depending on the economic capacity of the citizens. This tradition has existed for generations and remains to be organized every six months (210 days) coinciding with Kuningan Day. (kmb)

Caracas club stampede leaves 17 dead

CARACAS - Seventeen people, including eight minors, were killed at a crowded Caracas club early Saturday when a tear gas canister was detonated during a fight at a party, setting off a stampede, Venezuelan officials said.

The deaths occurred after a brawl broke out during a middle school graduation party and someone detonated the tear gas, sending more than 500 people rushing for the exits, said Interior and Justice Minister Nestor Reverol.

Official reports said the victims died of suffocation or multiple trauma. At least five people were seriously injured -- including one in critical condition -- in the incident and taken to hospital for treatment.

In comments aired on VTV state television, Reverol confirmed witness accounts that a minor, one of seven people detained in the incident, is suspected of setting off the tear gas. Another minor was also among those in custody.

Aquarius ship migrants finally reach land in Spain after weeklong odyssey

VALENCIA - The 630 migrants whose rescue sparked a major migration row in Europe began disembarking in Spain on Sunday, after a turbulent week that saw Italy turn away the Aquarius ship.

The first of three ships transporting the group, an Italian coast guard vessel called the Datillo, pulled into Valencia harbour just before 6:30 am (0430 GMT) with 274 migrants on board, according to the Red Cross.

Applause could be heard coming from the ship as it docked.

Medical staff wearing white overalls, gloves and masks then boarded the boat to carry out first medical checks as a police helicopter flew overhead.

The other migrants will arrive on an Italian navy ship, the Orione, and the Aquarius itself by noon, regional authorities said.

The migrants, mainly from Africa, will be welcomed by a team of more than 2,000 people, including 1,000 Red Cross volunteers and 470 translators.

Dozens of reporters who were on hand to cover their arrival were kept at a distance and no top government officials were expected at the port.

High waves and winds forced the convoy to take a detour on their 1,500-kilometre (930-mile) voyage to Spain. Their arrival will mark the end of a week-long odyssey in the Mediterranean Sea. A huge banner was earlier put up at the port saying “Welcome home” in various languages including Catalan, the local language, and Arabic.

“People are coming forward for everything: serving as translators, providing accommodation,” said Johnson Tamayo, a 51-year-old artist and Red Cross volunteer.

The passengers are made up of 450 adult men and 80 women -- including at least seven pregnant women -- as well as 11 under-13s and 89 adolescents, according to figures released by authorities in Valencia.

They come from 26 countries, mainly from Africa but also Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, according to Doctors Without Borders (MSF).

Chartered by a French aid group, Aquarius rescued the migrants off Libya’s coast last weekend.

JAKARTA - Police said there were 1,154 traffic accidents all over the country related to Ramadan and Ied al-Fitr from June 7 to June 15 this year smaller 17 percent from 1,623 accidents the same period last year.

There were 242 dead victims in the accidents or 44 percent smaller than 616 in the same period in 2017, Police spokesman Ins.Gen.Setyo Wasisto said here on Saturday.

The operation of new toll roads contributed partly to the decline in traffic accidents and death toll. Most of the accidents involved motorcyclists, Setyo said.

An Indonesian woman has been found in the belly of a giant python after the swollen snake was captured near where she vanished while tending her vegetable garden, police said Saturday.

The body of 54-year-old Wa Tiba was found Friday when villagers cut open the seven-metre (23-foot) python which was found bloated in the village of Persiapan Lawela on the island of Muna, offshore of Sulawesi.

“Residents were suspicious the snake swallowed the victim, so they killed it, then carried it out of the garden,” said local police chief Hamka, who like many Indonesians has only one name. “The snake’s belly was cut open and the body of the victim was found inside.”

Some 100 residents, including worried

relatives, launched a search for the woman after she failed to return from her garden Thursday night.

Hamka said villagers found the giant serpent lying about 30 metres from Tiba’s sandals and machete, adding she was swallowed head first and her body was found intact.

The garden in which she disappeared was at the base of a rocky cliff, pockmarked by caves, and known to be home to snakes, Hamka added. Giant pythons, which regularly top six metres, are commonly found in Indonesia and the Philippines.

While the serpents have been known to attack small animals, attempts to eat people are rare. In March last year, a farmer was killed by a python in the village of Salubiro on Sulawesi island. (afp)

An Indonesian was killed when his mother’s coffin fell from a funeral tower and crushed him during a service on the island of Sulawesi, police said Sunday.

Samen Kondorura, 40, died Friday when pallbearers lost their footing while carrying the coffin up a bamboo ladder in the Parinding valley in North Toraja district, local police said.

The casket fell as the group hoisted it onto a lakkian, an ornately carved tower where the deceased is placed before elaborate traditional funeral rites.

“As the mother’s coffin was being raised to the lakkian, suddenly the ladder shifted and collapsed, the coffin fell and hit the victim,” Julianto Sirait, chief commissioner of the Tana Toraja resort police,

told AFP. Video from the scene, which has gone viral online, shows the ladder slip just as the casket enters the tower, sending the men tumbling several metres to the ground where the victim is struck by the coffin.

Horrified onlookers rush to the men’s aid but Kondorura died later in hospital.

Sirait said the accident happened because the ladder was not properly reinforced but the family has declined to press charges. The body of Kondorura is now resting alongside his mother Berta, he added.

LE MANS - Fernando Alonso said he was happy with his first spell at the Le Mans 24 Hour Race on Saturday although he admitted the heavy traffic on track was a different challenge to the rarified air of Formula One. Alonso, bidding to win the second leg of motor racing’s Triple Crown of the Monaco GP, Le Mans and the Indy 500, drove the Toyota No8 for a two-hour and forty-five-minute burst.

By 1905 GMT, his Japanese team-mate Kazuki Nakajima was 3.884 seconds ahead of the Toyota No7 driven by Kamui Kobayashi.

“I’m happy with the way we started, the two cars are off, it’s a very good start and we have to continue like this,” said Alonso, a two-time F1 world champion.

“Everything was under control, we lost a little time to change the driver, then the traffic helps sometimes and sometimes it hurts.

“I was catching up (Jose Maria Lopez, driving the No7) when there was no traffic, then he punctured, then the safety car came out, it put things back to zero.”

“It’s like that, it’s a long race, it’ll probably be like this all along: a little bit of luck, some bad luck.”

Earlier Saturday, Rafael Nadal, fresh from his 11th Roland Garros title last week, waved the flag to start Alonso and the other 59 cars in the race.

Jacky Ickx, six-time winner at Le Mans, drove the lead car on the warm-up as race Grand Marshall saying he accepted the position “because it was the only way for me to be in front of him (Alonso) one day”.

Alonso is aiming for the second leg of motor-racing’s triple crown, having won the Monaco Grand Prix in 2006 and 2007. That would leave the Indy 500.

Only Graham Hill has achieved the feat.

Toyota occupied both places on the front row of the grid as they set off in pursuit of a first victory at Le Mans in their 19th attempt.

The Japanese constructor, the only major manufacturer racing in WEC this year, has entered two hybrid vehicles and faces competition in the premier category, Le Mans Prototype 1, from eight non-hybrids run by private teams as well as 20 cars in LMP2 and 30 more in two GTE categories In addition to Alonso, two other noted Formula One drivers are making their Le Mans debuts -- British former World champion Jenson Button is driving for SMP Racing and Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya for United Autosports. Murray has not played a competitive match since he was knocked out of the Wimbledon quarter-finals last July as a hip injury brought a painful end to his season.

The former world number one underwent surgery in January after pulling out of the 2017 US Open and this year’s Australian Open.

Murray made a tentative commitment to appear in the grasscourt tournament in Rosmalen this week, before again pulling out at the last minute to spark fresh fears that he wouldn’t make it back in time for Wimbledon.

But the two-time Wimbledon champion has been practising regularly for the past fortnight and a final workout on Friday at Queen’s Club with fellow Briton Cameron Norrie convinced him to return.

“I’ve been practising the last couple of weeks and obviously

building up each day. I started playing sets about a week ago,” Murray said on Saturday.

“So, I played probably seven or eight sets, and I wanted to feel how I felt the following day after playing a couple of sets with Cam Norrie.

“I got tested by my physios this morning to make sure I hadn’t stiffened up and lost any range of motion in my hip which can happen when you’re tired and the hip’s a bit angry.

“That wasn’t the case. That was all positive and I pulled up pretty well from that, so then I decided to go for it.”

Murray faces temperamental but talented Australian Nick Kyrgios in the Queen’s first round as he builds up to the start of Wimbledon on July 2.

Murray, a five-time Queen’s

winner, had only been seen on court during a charity match against Roger Federer last November and one exhibition set against Roberto Bautista Agut in December.

And, after such a long and frustrating rehabilitation period, the world number 157 admits it will be a tense moment when he gets back on the court to face Kyrgios.

“Well it’s obviously eleven months since I last competed. So obviously I’m looking forward to it. There are a lot of doubts though as well when you’ve not played for a long time,” Murray said.

“Coming back from injury you’re always kind of second guessing yourself.

“You never know exactly when you’re going to be ready, but I’m looking forward to getting back out there and competing, and hopefully playing well.” (afp)

‘Acrobat’ Schmeichel earns praise after denying Peru

‘Naive’ Nigeria youth schooled by Croatia master Modric Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr admitted his young team had been “naive” in a 2-0 loss to Croatia in their opening Group D game Saturday, continuing a dismal recent record at World Cups.

A Luka Modric penalty 20 minutes from time and a firsth a l f own goal sealed victory for a Croatia side brimming with technical ability, and the Super Eagles -- who brought the youngest squad to Russia -- have now won just one of their last 13 games on football’s biggest stage.

With rivals Argentina and Iceland only managing a 1-1 draw earlier Saturday in Saransk, both sides had a chance to take control of Group D. Nigeria, knowing they were always likely to struggle for possession against a central one-two of Modric and Ivan Rakitic, were content to sit back and allow Croatia to come to them.

After 10 minutes, Juventus target man Mario Mandzukic teed up Ivan Perisic at the edge of the area only for the Inter Milan forward to blaze over.

Croatia, semi-finalists at France ‘98, have struggled to live up to the lofty expectations borne of an embarrassment of midfield riches, and meekly lost their World Cup opener 3-1 to hosts Brazil four years ago.

There is a sense of now-or-never for the Balkans nation at this tournament and Modric said his side would lift their game when they meet Lionel Messi’s Argentina in their next match.

Kasper Schmeichel son of former Manchester United goalkeeping legend Peter -- was showered with praise after his acrobatic display helped earn Denmark a 1-0 over Peru on Saturday to get their World Cup off to a flying start.

Denmark’s Yussuf Poulsen redeemed himself with the winning goal in Saransk after conceding a first-half penalty, awarded by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, which Christian Cueva blasted over the crossbar.

However Denmark have the nextgeneration Schmeichel guarding their goal. The 31-yearold Leicester City shot-stopper pulled off a string of saves to

deny Peru’s attack and especially Paolo Guerrero, who went close after coming on for the final 30 minutes.

“He is acrobatic, he’s fast on his feet and his goal-line play is probably one of the best in the world, that is his strength,” Denmark coach Age Hareide said of Schmeichel.

“He had a fantastic performance, they threw people forward including their star striker (Guerrero), so you have to acknowledge his performance.”

Schmeichel’s heroics and Poulsen’s finishing mean Denmark extended their unbeaten run to 16 games and ended Peru’s 15-match streak without defeat.

“This is our fifth game without

conceding a goal, it’s very hard to do that, especially at a World Cup game,” added Hareide. “They got very little out of this game, they probably deserved more, but that’s football.”

After the World Cup’s first ever VAR penalty was given for France in their 2-1 win over Australia earlier Saturday, Peru got one in the third game of the day, but wasted it horribly.

Denmark’s Norwegian coach said he had no problem with the VAR awarding a penalty against his team after the referee initially missed Poulsen clipping the boot of Cueva.

“The VAR system is there to make things fair, there has been a lot

of discussion about the interuptions, but here it worked out well,” added Hareide.

“If affected us, but it makes life easier for the referees to make the right decision, so it’s okay.

The Danes face Australia next, in Samara on Thursday, but they face the blow of losing midfielder William Kvist for the rest of the tournament after he had to leave the Peru game early.

Egypt’s Salah in apparent discomfort in World Cup training Egypt’s super striker Mohamed Salah needed help from three teammates pulling on a jersey over his injured shoulder on Saturday, according to AFP reporters at the team’s training camp.

The Pharaohs’ best hope in making the last 16 of a World Cup for the first time since 1990 has been having an eventful time at his team’s base camp in the Chechen capital Grozny.

Salah watched from the bench as Egypt succumbed to an 89th minute header by defender Jose Gimenez in a 1-0 loss to Uruguay on Friday. He returned to training on Saturday but was spotted employing the help of three teammates pulling on his top.

The team doctor nevertheless pronounced the Liverpool star “100 percent ready” to play in Egypt’s second match against host nation Russia in Saint Petersburg on Tuesday.

But Salah at least he can take comfort in a 100-kilogramme (60 pound) birthday cake he was confronted with on his 26th birthday on Friday. A video released by the Chechen authorities that has gone viral showed Salah leisurely walking into his hotel lobby suspecting nothing and listening to music on his headphones.

He began smiling meekly and suspecting something was not right when a hotel employee shot confetti in his face.

Then Salah spotted the giant cake sitting on a lacquered table. Topped with a golden boot, the towering structure was topped with layers of candles that surely added up to more than 26.

A Chechen man in a smart suit immediately ran up

to Salah with a microphone in apparent expectation of a thank you speech.

Salah did not oblige while smiling shyly and profusely.

Salah was well out sight by the time the cake was sliced.

Egypt’s Salah in apparent discomfort in World Cup training Egypt’s super striker Mohamed Salah needed help from three teammates pulling on a jersey over his injured shoulder on Saturday, according to AFP reporters at the team’s training camp.

The Pharaohs’ best hope in making the last 16 of a World Cup for the first time since 1990 has been having an eventful time at his team’s base camp in the Chechen capital Grozny.

Salah watched from the bench as Egypt succumbed to an 89th minute header by defender Jose Gimenez in a 1-0 loss to Uruguay on Friday. He returned to training on Saturday but was spotted employing the help of three teammates pulling on his top.

The team doctor nevertheless pronounced the Liverpool star “100 percent ready” to play in Egypt’s second match against host nation Russia in Saint Petersburg on Tuesday.

But Salah at least he can take comfort in a 100-kilogramme (60 pound) birthday cake he was confronted with on his 26th birthday on Friday. A video released by the Chechen authorities that has gone viral showed Salah leisurely walking into his hotel lobby suspecting nothing and listening to music on his headphones.

He began smiling meekly and suspecting something was not right when a hotel employee shot confetti in his face.

Then Salah spotted the giant cake sitting on a lacquered table. Topped with a golden boot, the towering structure was topped with layers of candles that surely added up to more than 26.

A Chechen man in a smart suit immediately ran up

to Salah with a microphone in apparent expectation of a thank you speech.

Salah did not oblige while smiling shyly and profusely.

Salah was well out sight by the time the cake was sliced.

Egypt’s decision to make Grozny their World Cup hope has been roundly criticised by human rights groups because of the Chechen authorities’ deadly persecution of all forms of dissent. (afp)

LE MANS - Fernando Alonso said he was happy with his first spell at the Le Mans 24 Hour Race on Saturday although he admitted the heavy traffic on track was a different challenge to the rarified air of Formula One. Alonso, bidding to win the second leg of motor racing’s Triple Crown of the Monaco GP, Le Mans and the Indy 500, drove the Toyota No8 for a two-hour and forty-five-minute burst.

By 1905 GMT, his Japanese team-mate Kazuki Nakajima was 3.884 seconds ahead of the Toyota No7 driven by Kamui Kobayashi.

“I’m happy with the way we started, the two cars are off, it’s a very good start and we have to continue like this,” said Alonso, a two-time F1 world champion.

“Everything was under control, we lost a little time to change the driver, then the traffic helps sometimes and sometimes it hurts.

“I was catching up (Jose Maria Lopez, driving the No7) when there was no traffic, then he punctured, then the safety car came out, it put things back to zero.”

“It’s like that, it’s a long race, it’ll probably be like this all along: a little bit of luck, some bad luck.”

Earlier Saturday, Rafael Nadal, fresh from his 11th Roland Garros title last week, waved the flag to start Alonso and the other 59 cars in the race.

Jacky Ickx, six-time winner at Le Mans, drove the lead car on the warm-up as race Grand Marshall saying he accepted the position “because it was the only way for me to be in front of him (Alonso) one day”.

Alonso is aiming for the second leg of motor-racing’s triple crown, having won the Monaco Grand Prix in 2006 and 2007. That would leave the Indy 500.

Only Graham Hill has achieved the feat.

Toyota occupied both places on the front row of the grid as they set off in pursuit of a first victory at Le Mans in their 19th attempt.

Murray has not played a competitive match since he was knocked out of the Wimbledon quarter-finals last July as a hip injury brought a painful end to his season.

The former world number one underwent surgery in January after pulling out of the 2017 US Open and this year’s Australian Open.

Murray made a tentative commitment to appear in the grasscourt tournament in Rosmalen this week, before again pulling out at the last minute to spark fresh fears that he wouldn’t make it back in time for Wimbledon.

But the two-time Wimbledon champion has been practising regularly for the past fortnight and a final workout on Friday at Queen’s Club with fellow Briton Cameron Norrie convinced him to return.

“I’ve been practising the last couple of weeks and obviously

building up each day. I started playing sets about a week ago,” Murray said on Saturday.

“So, I played probably seven or eight sets, and I wanted to feel how I felt the following day after playing a couple of sets with Cam Norrie.

“I got tested by my physios this morning to make sure I hadn’t stiffened up and lost any range of motion in my hip which can happen when you’re tired and the hip’s a bit angry.

“That wasn’t the case. That was all positive and I pulled up pretty well from that, so then I decided to go for it.”

Murray faces temperamental but talented Australian Nick Kyrgios in the Queen’s first round as he builds up to the start of Wimbledon on July 2.

Murray, a five-time Queen’s

winner, had only been seen on court during a charity match against Roger Federer last November and one exhibition set against Roberto Bautista Agut in December.

And, after such a long and frustrating rehabilitation period, the world number 157 admits it will be a tense moment when he gets back on the court to face Kyrgios.

“Well it’s obviously eleven months since I last competed. So obviously I’m looking forward to it. There are a lot of doubts though as well when you’ve not played for a long time,” Murray said.

“Coming back from injury you’re always kind of second guessing yourself.

“You never know exactly when you’re going to be ready, but I’m looking forward to getting back out there and competing, and hopefully playing well.” (afp)

Caracas club stampede leaves 17 dead

CARACAS - Seventeen people, including eight minors, were killed at a crowded Caracas club early Saturday when a tear gas canister was detonated during a fight at a party, setting off a stampede, Venezuelan officials said.

The deaths occurred after a brawl broke out during a middle school graduation party and someone detonated the tear gas, sending more than 500 people rushing for the exits, said Interior and Justice Minister Nestor Reverol.

Official reports said the victims died of suffocation or multiple trauma. At least five people were seriously injured -- including one in critical condition -- in the incident and taken to hospital for treatment.

In comments aired on VTV state television, Reverol confirmed witness accounts that a minor, one of seven people detained in the incident, is suspected of setting off the tear gas. Another minor was also among those in custody.

The club’s manager was also arrested for failure to comply with “measures that must be adopted...

Aquarius ship migrants finally reach land in Spain after weeklong odyssey

VALENCIA - The 630 migrants whose rescue sparked a major migration row in Europe began disembarking in Spain on Sunday, after a turbulent week that saw Italy turn away the Aquarius ship.

The first of three ships transporting the group, an Italian coast guard vessel called the Datillo, pulled into Valencia harbour just before 6:30 am (0430 GMT) with 274 migrants on board, according to the Red Cross.

Applause could be heard coming from the ship as it docked.

Medical staff wearing white overalls, gloves and masks then boarded the boat to carry out first medical checks as a police helicopter flew overhead.

The other migrants will arrive on an Italian navy ship, the Orione, and the Aquarius itself by noon, regional authorities said.

The migrants, mainly from Africa, will be welcomed by a team of more than 2,000 people, including 1,000 Red Cross volunteers and 470 translators.

Dozens of reporters who were on hand to cover their arrival were kept at a distance and no top government officials were expected at the port.

High waves and winds forced the convoy to take a detour on their 1,500-kilometre (930-mile) voyage to Spain. Their arrival will mark the end of a week-long odyssey in the Mediterranean Sea. A huge banner was earlier put up at the port saying “Welcome home” in various languages including Catalan, the local language, and Arabic.

“People are coming forward for everything: serving as translators, providing accommodation,” said Johnson Tamayo, a 51-year-old artist and Red Cross volunteer.

The passengers are made up of 450 adult men and 80 women -- including at least seven pregnant women -- as well as 11 under-13s and 89 adolescents, according to figures released by authorities in Valencia.

They come from 26 countries, mainly from Africa but also Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, according to Doctors Without Borders (MSF).

Chartered by a French aid group, Aquarius rescued the migrants off Libya’s coast last weekend.

MSF, who along with French charity SOS Mediterranee were treating the migrants on board the ship, said two passengers drowned last weekend when the ship first encountered difficulties off Libya. (afp)

JAKARTA - Police said there were 1,154 traffic accidents all over the country related to Ramadan and Ied al-Fitr from June 7 to June 15 this year smaller 17 percent from 1,623 accidents the same period last year.

There were 242 dead victims in the accidents or 44 percent smaller than 616 in the same period in 2017, Police spokesman Ins.Gen.Setyo Wasisto said here on Saturday.

An Indonesian woman has been found in the belly of a giant python after the swollen snake was captured near where she vanished while tending her vegetable garden, police said Saturday.

The body of 54-year-old Wa Tiba was found Friday when villagers cut open the seven-metre (23-foot) python which was found bloated in the village of Persiapan Lawela on the island of Muna, offshore of Sulawesi.

“Residents were suspicious the snake swallowed the victim, so they killed it, then carried it out of the garden,” said local police chief Hamka, who like many Indonesians has only one name. “The snake’s belly was cut open and the body of the victim was found inside.”

Some 100 residents, including worried

relatives, launched a search for the woman after she failed to return from her garden Thursday night.

Hamka said villagers found the giant serpent lying about 30 metres from Tiba’s sandals and machete, adding she was swallowed head first and her body was found intact.

The garden in which she disappeared was at the base of a rocky cliff, pockmarked by caves, and known to be home to snakes, Hamka added. Giant pythons, which regularly top six metres, are commonly found in Indonesia and the Philippines.

While the serpents have been known to attack small animals, attempts to eat people are rare. In March last year, a farmer was killed by a python in the village of Salubiro on Sulawesi island. (afp)

An Indonesian was killed when his mother’s coffin fell from a funeral tower and crushed him during a service on the island of Sulawesi, police said Sunday.

Samen Kondorura, 40, died Friday when pallbearers lost their footing while carrying the coffin up a bamboo ladder in the Parinding valley in North Toraja district, local police said.

The casket fell as the group hoisted it onto a lakkian, an ornately carved tower where the deceased is placed before elaborate traditional funeral rites.

“As the mother’s coffin was being raised to the lakkian, suddenly the ladder shifted and collapsed, the coffin fell and hit the victim,” Julianto Sirait, chief commissioner of the Tana Toraja resort police,

told AFP. Video from the scene, which has gone viral online, shows the ladder slip just as the casket enters the tower, sending the men tumbling several metres to the ground where the victim is struck by the coffin.

Horrified onlookers rush to the men’s aid but Kondorura died later in hospital.

Sirait said the accident happened because the ladder was not properly reinforced but the family has declined to press charges. The body of Kondorura is now resting alongside his mother Berta, he added.

But the trips came to an abrupt halt when a North Korean soldier shot dead a woman from the South who strayed into a forbidden zone. Many South Korean firms set up operations in the joint-venture Kaesong Industrial Complex where they employed cheap labour from the North, but Seoul closed the project in 2016 over Pyongyang’s weapons programmes.

Egyptian telecom firm Orascom poured hundreds of millions of dollars into setting up the North’s first mobile phone network, Koryolink, only for the government to set up a rival operator of its own.

“Our organisation has had much interest recently from investors interested in market research as well as face-to-face matchmaking with potential DPRK ministries and future partners,” he told AFP, using the official acronym for North Korea.

But the North has not officially embraced the market. At the last ruling party congress, Kim decried the “filthy wind of bourgeois liberty and ‘reform’ and ‘openness’ blowing in our neighbourhood”.

China has taken North Korean officials on study tours of Beijing, Shanghai and its coal-rich provinces to try to encourage them to follow its example, and diplomats say it is offering detailed development planning.

But they add that Pyongyang is wary of being too dependent on Beijing, and prefers to look to Vietnam for an example of how a smaller Communist country has been able to adopt capitalism while not weakening the authorities’ hold on power.

North Korea does have some advantages, says Gareth Leather, senior Asia economist for Capital Economics, pointing out natural resources including zinc, magnesite, iron and copper, low-cost labour, and an advantageous location. But even if sanctions are lifted, he said, “it’s basically a police state and you have a long way to go to North Korea becoming a normal economy”. “It’s going to take a very brave investor to venture in again.” (afp)

Tradition of Barong Ngunya at Serokadan Village

Virtually all villages have unique traditions denoting the heritage from their ancestors.

Residents of Serokadan customary village, Susut, Bangli, for instance, regularly organize Ngelawang Agung or Barong Ngunya (street show) every Kuningan Day. Chief of Serokadan customary village, I Dewa Gede Oka, revealed that Ngelawang Agung is indeed held every Kuningan Day. It is different from ngelawang in general where the ngelawang agung held on Kuningan feast involves the whole sanctified effigies of the village such as eight sacred barongs, Ratu Lingsir, Ratu Gede Anom, Ratu Mas, Ratu Gede Tameng and Ratu Gede Alit. “The Ratu Lingsir in particular is the oldest owned by the village. It is believed to have reached thousands of years. This tradition aims to purify the environment from negative energies,” he said.

The procession of ngelawang agung, said Dewa Gede Oka, is held at 13:00 until the afternoon. It is started with a ceremony followed by the sacred barongs coming out simultaneously and then gathers somewhere. He explained the ngelawang agung is not implemented by visiting one home to another, but walk to the ends of the village in accordance with the points of the compass. Local people call the procession nyatur desa.

“After doing nyatur desa, the eight sacred barongs gather in the middle (catus pata). Usually, the ngelawang agung is witnessed by the whole community around and outside the village,” he added. (kmb)

Optimists say that with mineral wealth, cheap labour, and a helpful geographical location, the North has huge potential.

But the history of overseas firms who have tried to set up operations in the isolated, impoverished country is a long and sorry one.

Rules that can change on a whim, bills that are never paid, and the threat of expropriation hang over foreigners who step into the wildest of wild east investment destinations.

For now, dozens of restrictions apply under the various sanctions regimes imposed on the North over its nuclear ambitions.

Ritual Meaning Behind Mesuryak Tradition

Celebration of Kuningan Day at Bongan Gede Hamlet, Bongan, Tabanan, returned to be accompanied with mesuryak tradition on Saturday (Jun. 9). It took place lively. The procession began around 09:00 until 11:00 local time marked with prayers at each resident’s house compound. After that, it was resumed with worship at village trinity temples and the merajan (family temple).

This worship is meant to invoke salvation to God as well as the ancestors believed to be at home during the celebration of Galungan until Kuningan.

The mesuryak is then proceeded to bring all the ritual paraphernalia such as the offerings, including the one symbolizing the Raja Dewata (ancestors) to the front gate of each house compound.

Furthermore, temple priests or the elders chanted the prayers closed with mesuryak procession. Each family provided provisions in the form of coins and banknotes. The money was thrown into the air and then grabbed by residents. Girls and boys scrambled for the money. From the observation, every Kuningan Day, about tens of millions of rupiahs are dedicated by the citizens of Bongan Gede hamlet for the mesuryak tradition.

When interviewed by Bali Post on Saturday (Jun. 16), I Kadek Alit Pujawan said that he had learned business since attending high school in Bangli in 2011.

After graduating from high school in 2014, he finally decided to open customary clothing business. “I used to be a model. Previously, I had time to study a management related to this business in Denpasar.

After that, I got an idea considering there is an opportunity of customary fashion business in Bangli.

Finally, I ventured to open this business,” he said.

According to Alit, when opening the business he encountered a capital problem. However, due to very high intention and enthusiasm to open a clothing business, he borrowed capital to cooperative and People’s Business Credit (KUR). In addition to borrowing, he used his first salary when working at hotel

to start his business. “To increase the merchandise, I take advantage the sales results during this time,” he said.

In 2015, the Bangli Industry and Trade Agency embraced local young entrepreneurs. At that time, he occupied the second position as one of the young entrepreneurs with outstanding performance in Bangli. In addition, he also successfully achieved the seventh rank of self-employed young entrepreneurs in the Bali Province through a program of the Ministry of SMEs in cooperation with in Bali TV some time ago.

BANGLI - Painting creativity is not limited to make expression on canvas media.

However, it can take advantage of other media such as shirts. If pursued more seriously, painting on the shirt media can turn out to be a promising business opportunity. This has been proved by I Ketut Teler, a painter from Tembuku Kaja hamlet, Tembuku.

Malaysia power shift hits China infrastructure drive KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia was once a loyal partner in China’s globe-spanning infrastructure drive but a new government is now pledging to review Beijing-backed projects, threatening key links in the much-vaunted initiative.

Kuala Lumpur’s previous regime, led by scandal-mired Najib Razak, had warm ties with China and signed a string of deals for Beijing-funded projects, including a major rail link and a deep-sea port.

The new government, led by political heavyweight Mahathir Mohamad, has pledged to review Chinese deals seen as dubious, calling into question Malaysia’s status as one of Beijing’s most cooperative partners in its infrastructure push.

China’s ambitious initiative to revive ancient Silk Road trading routes with a global network of ports, roads and railways -- dubbed “One Belt, One Road” -- was launched in 2013 and is the economic crown jewel of President Xi

Jinping’s presidency.

Malaysia, along with Beijing ally Cambodia, were seen as bright spots in Southeast Asia, with projects in other countries often facing problems, from land acquisition to drawn-out negotiations with governments.

LONDON - Stung by an attack on Muslims in London a year ago, Britain is facing a growing threat from far-right extremists fuelled by online hate speech, forcing the authorities to react.

In a country hit by five attacks in the space of six months in 2017 that killed 36 people, “the biggest threat is from Islamist terrorism”, Home Secretary Sajid Javid said earlier this month.

But “extreme right-wing terrorism is also an increasing threat”, the interior minister added as he unveiled a new counter-terror strategy.

A government report found that four attacks have been carried out in Britain over the past five years “by lone actors motivated to varying degrees by extreme right-wing ideologies”.

Among them was Darren Osborne, a 48-year-old from Cardiff, who a year ago on Tuesday drove his rented van into a group of

Muslim worshippers near Finsbury Park Mosque in north London, killing one man and injuring 12 others.

The father-of-four’s radicalisation ramped up in a matter of weeks, fed by compulsive reading of hate material online.

In February, Mark Rowley, the then head of counter-terrorism policing, said that four extreme right-wing plots were foiled last year and described the trend as “worrying”.

Matthew Henman, from the Jane’s Terrorism and Insurgency Centre database, told AFP: “There is a clear increase in both the tempo of attacks conducted by right-wing extremists and in the seriousness, lethality, of such violence.”

The report’s “online hate” section cited prominent British figures among those with the biggest reach on social media.

They included Stephen Lennon -- known as Tommy Robinson -- founder of the English Defence League, which he left in 2013.

They also included Paul Joseph Watson, whose videos have been viewed hundreds of thousands of times, and commentator Katie Hopkins, who in 2015 compared migrants to “cockroaches”. (afp)

48 hours in Dresden, Germany

DRESDEN - Dresden, situated in Eastern Germany on the border of the Czech Republic, is perhaps best known for being heavily bombed during the Second World War. The British/American aerial bombing attack in 1945 caused a firestorm that swept through the city centre, destroying many of Dresden’s most iconic buildings and resulting in the deaths of nearly 25,000 people.

Over the course of 60 years, the Old Town has been painstakingly rebuilt from the rubble; its iconic buildings recreated brick by brick. Many of the city’s half a million residents contributed to Dresden’s restoration by volunteering to clear the rubble, which continued well into the 90s.

Nowadays, the scars of War are barely noticeable and Dresden has become one of Germany’s must-visit destinations. The River Elbe snakes through the city, dividing the traditional “Old Town” and buzzing “Neutstadt” (New Town), which has one of the liveliest nightlife scenes in Eastern Germany.

On the left bank of the Elbe is Dresden’s Altstadt (Old Town), which can be explored entirely on foot. In the sum-

mer months, the sound of classical music fills the main square – the buskers here are exceptional. As you walk along the cobbled streets admiring the Renaissance, Baroque and 19th century architecture, it is hard to believe that many of these grand buildings are reproductions. Among them is the Dresden Frauenkirche, an 18th century Lutheran church that stands proudly in the centre of the Altstadt.

Also known as The Church of our Lady, it features one of the largest domes in Europe and is a spectacular example of Protestant sacred architecture. During the bombings of 1945 the church dome collapsed, and for 50 years the ruins served as a war memorial. Restoration was finally completed in 2005, using 8000 of the original stones, and the Frauenkirche now stands a symbol of reconciliation between former warring nations.

Just around the corner from the Frauenkirche is a 101m long mural depicting the “Procession of Princes” – 35 rulers belonging to one of Saxony’s ruling family, who governed the region 800 years ago. The mural is composed of 25,000 Meissen porcelain tiles and presents a dramatic and rousing picture of medieval Saxony. The mural was spared from the brunt of the bombings, but still suffered serious smoke damage and some 700 tiles had to be repaired or replaced.

There is one modern gem that should not be missed.

Highlights of the museum include an unflinching exhibition on drug use by both the German and allied armies during World War II – crystal meth was apparently used by many German soldiers, while Benzedrine was the drug of choice of the British army. It does not include the cost of transportation and many others. No wonder the IVF program is more followed by couples from the upper middle class because the cost is expensive.

SINGARAJA — Eid prayers in Buleleng on Friday (Jun. 15) took place solemnly. In addition to performing the prayers, the Muslims in North Bali filled the holiday moment with a number of unique traditions. One of them is that Muslims at Kampong Singaraja routinely held the megibung or communal eating tradition. It is said the tradition poses a legacy of Solo, Central Java which remains to survive until now in Buleleng.

Besides, this tradition also strengthens the ties of friendship between Muslim and Hindu people chiefly those from royal family.

Before the megibung tradition, from the morning the Muslims carry out Eid prayers at the local mosque. Furthermore, they listen to the sermon by appointed leader.

Then, the people mutually visit and apologize on the day of ‘victory’ after a full month of fasting.

People then sit down in a row in the courtyard of the mosque. In front of their seating, rice with side dishes and drinking water are ready to serve. After everything is completed, the megibung tradition begins. This dish is donated by every household head.

Aside from enjoying the dishes made together by citizens, people return to make mutual visit to maintain social relationship in the feast. Inevitably, this situation becomes an atmosphere full of kinship among the Muslims.

Moreover, senior figure of Kenginan Palace, A.A. Ngurah Parwata Panji, together with Chairman of the Buleleng House of Representatives, Gede Supriatna, were present and mingled with the invitees of the megibung.

A Muslim figure as well as headman of Kampong Kajanan, Agus Murzani, said he definitely does not know who started the

megibung tradition. Nevertheless, he believed the tradition does not only strengthen friendship among the Muslims, but also preserves the heritage of Balinese cultural traditions. This happens because the tolerance between Islam and Hinduism since the days of the Buleleng kingdom has been well established, so that his party with other residents is committed to preserving the megibung tradition at Singaraja village.

“Our residents are mostly from Solo. In the city, it is called bancakan while in Bali is megibung.

This is an expression of gratitude for the graces of God to our citizens. Similarly, we maintain tolerance with the Hindus, especially the royal family having bequeathed brotherhood between Muslims and Hindus,” he said.

Senior figure of Kanginan Palace, A.A Ngurah Parwata Panji, said the tolerance or cultural acculturation between Muslims and Hindus at Kampong Singaraja is ancestral heritage from the past kingdom. To that end, as the next generation, he invited both Muslims and Hindus to keep unity and friendship in preserving the ancestral heritage. “Every religion holidays of Muslim, our royal family is invited and vice versa. This is a heritage and we invite the younger generation to keep and preserve it,” he explained.

Similar opinion was revealed by Chairman of the Buleleng House of Representatives, Gede Supriatna.

He invited to preserve the tradition as it contains philosophy of religious teaching and tolerance between the Hinduism and Islam.

Thousands of tourists visiting the destination came from various cities in Indonesia such as Jakarta, Surabaya, Bogor, Malang, Sidoarjo, Bandung and Jogjakarta to Makassar. In addition, foreign tourists were also booming.

The data obtained during day 2 before the Eid showed the number of visitors already reached 10,949 people where 6,002 of them are foreign tourists and 4,947 are domestic tourists. Meanwhile, on day 1 before holiday the number of visitors already increased to 12,018 where 6,216 are foreign and 5,802 are domestic tourists.

“Our data indicate that tourist visit on day 2 before holiday reached 10,949 people and on day 1 before holiday already reached 12,018 people. They are dominated by foreign tourists as they are eager to see directly and feel the religious atmosphere of the Tanah Lot destination coinciding with the piodalan falling every six months,” explained Toya. Where to go?

Unlike Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Penida is large. It is the largest of Bali’s three sister islands and to really explore and understand it, you’ll need to spend a few days here. Visit Crystal Bay for snorkelling; it’s better if you go in the morning for clear, crisp weather and calm waters. Then you can visit the very Instagrammable Kelingking Beach for one of the region’s most breathtaking views.

Broken Beach was a cave that lost its roof over time and is located at the bottom of a cliff which cannot be accessed over land. You’ll enjoy this panoramic view from the top of a cliff. Sometimes, you’ll be able to spot some rays or turtles swimming in the dazzling blue water that’s as clear as glass. Angel’s Billabong is a definite don’t miss! A natural infinity pool, it’s only 200 metres away from Broken Beach and the water, which meets the sea is unbelievably clear and refreshing, great for a swim! Temeling Waterfall is another great attraction; to get to the waterfall.

Oprah’s advice stuck with ‘Wrinkle’ star Storm Reid

LOS ANGELES - She hasn’t yet turned 15 but child star Storm Reid is wise enough to have picked up some life lessons already -- the most important of them from Oprah Winfrey.

The talk show legend and media tycoon became a mentor for the Atlanta-born newcomer on the set of Disney sci-fi fantasy “A Wrinkle in Time,” which came out in March.

“She said, ‘Don’t waste energy on things you can’t change in life when you could be using that energy on something else positive.’ It’s my life motto,” Reid told AFP. Speaking on the red carpet at the MTV Movie and Television Awards in Los Angeles, Reid said she “fangirled a lot” when she met Winfrey, who was raised in poverty and became America’s first black multi-billionaire.

“My head exploded! And when I walked in the room she knew my name,” Reid said of their first encounter before filming started in Los Angeles in November 2016.

“She was like, ‘Ah - Storm,’ and I was like, ‘Oh my God, she knows my name.’ I was freaking out.”

Unkind critics might point out that Oprah’s advice would work well in the case of “Wrinkle,” which was panned by critics and made losses estimated at up to $186 million.

Reid, though, described the experience starring in her first blockbuster as “amazing,” adding that “to see my film impact so many people was really incredible.”

Next up is HBO young adult drama series “Euphoria,” in which Reid co-stars with Zendaya (“Spider-Man: Homecoming,” “The Greatest Showman”).

“It’s basically about teenage drama, love, lies and drugs,” Reid said.

“Even though it’s a heavy topic, I feel like it underlines what’s going on in the world right now.”

The awards, hosted this year by comic Tiffany Haddish, have been taking a sideways look at Hollywood since 1992, handing out “golden popcorn” statuettes to honorees.

The nominees are decided by producers and MTV executives, while the winners are chosen by the public, who vote online.

The annual celebration of youth pop culture expanded last year to include television, and became a live show, but MTV reverted to prerecording this time around.

Filming took place Saturday in a hangar at Santa Monica Airport, and MTV is keeping the winners top secret until the ceremony airs nationally on Monday.

“Black Panther,” the breakthrough superhero film that has become the ninth highest-grossing movie of all time, led the nominations with seven.

Placing second with six nominations was “Stranger Things,” the Netflix series about supernatural occurrences in a small town in Indiana. (afp)

NEW YORK - Music’s most famous couple Beyonce and Jay-Z pulled a surprise by releasing a joint album, a long-rumored collaboration that celebrates their marital passion and black identity.

The pop diva and hip-hop superstar announced the album, “Everything is Love,” from the stage in London as they wrapped up the British leg that opened a global tour.

The album came out late Saturday exclusively on Jay-Z’s fledgling Tidal streaming service and is not available on Spotify -- a far larger platform, which Beyonce disses on the album in a string of F-bombs.

The couple also put out an elaborately choreographed video that takes place inside the Louvre museum in Paris for a song off the album, “Apeshit.”

The video opens with the couple standing regally in front of the “Mona Lisa”

-- Jay-Z in a light green double-breasted suit, Beyonce in a lavender pantsuit -- and features a squad of scantily clad dancers moving sensually in front of Jacques Louis David’s “The Coronation of Napoleon.”

Driven by warm, sultry soul with a largely hiphop cadence, “Everything is Love” marries the styles of the two artists but is more consistent with the recent direction of Jay-Z. The album shatters any lingering innocence from the early days of Beyonce, with the singer of “Say My Name” and “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)” generous in the details of her sex life with Jay-Z. The ultra-modern 44,899 capacity stadium stands as a symbol of Russia’s successful bid to host football’s biggest tournament but also one of its major concerns -- what happens to the venue when the World Cup circus moves on?

“No white elephants, nothing unneeded, nothing superfluous, everything will be put to use for Russian citizens in the coming

years,” Alexei Sorokin, Russia’s World Cup organising committee chief told AFP in the run-up to the tournament. Quite what Nizhny’s stadium will be used for after July 6, when it hosts a quarter-final, is unclear.

The city’s football team, Olimpiyets Nizhny Novgorod, which will inherit the stadium, plays in Russia’s second tier and averages little more than 5,000 fans per game.

- Ice hockey rules Spend a little time in the city and it is clear that Nizhny sports fans are less passionate about local football than ice hockey and the fortunes of Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod. Asked if he was excited about the World Cup coming to town, one taxi driver shyly admitted he preferred “hokkey” -- ice hockey.

Another, Sergei, recounted the recent Winter Olympics men’s final -- which Russia won -- and laughed

at suggestions that runners-up Germany might have triumphed. On football, he was less effusive.

Torpedo, a source of local pride in a city once closed off by Soviets and called Gorky, were the first ice hockey team outside Moscow to finish in the national league’s top three, in 1961, and challenged the capital’s clubs regularly in the early 1980s.

White elephant football stadiums are a touchy subject for any host nation and FIFA amid the bloating costs of staging a World Cup. Following Brazil in 2014, there were numerous reports of stadiums that were no longer used once the tournament ended.
