Bali News Bird flu spreads to Klungkung Semarapura (Bali Post)—

Transmission of bird flu continued to spread in Klungkung Regency. After a few residents of Akah and Satra Village were examined due to suffering from flu and colds following a number of chickens died suddenly, now the resident of Timuhun, Banjarangkan, Komang Merdana, 34, was examined and observed for ten days. Merdana had cough and fever after holding a chicken that died suddenly and was positive to bird flu. Friday (Apr 15), the bird flu attacked the area of Jalan Dewi Sartika, Central Semarapura, Klungkung. Seven chickens belonging to Made Mudiana (resident of Timuhun living in the area of Jalan Dewi Sartika—Ed) suddenly died. On Wednesday (Apr 13), out of 10 chickens he had, two died suddenly. Then, on next Thursday (Apr 14—Ed) five others died. His chicken carcasses were found scattered. There was in the gutter, home yard and other places because those chickens were allowed to roam around. The remaining three chickens were then eliminated forcibly by means of air rifle. Due to the incident, Mudiana then contacted his brother (Komang Merdana—Ed) who lived at Timuhun. On Thursday (Apr 14), Merdana came and buried those chickens. The burial was carried out by bare hands. “On the following day (Friday— Ed), Merdana got cough and fever,” said the Section Head of

It was said that Merdana immediately checked his health to Community Health Center II of Klungkung. “We got information from the health center on the suspicion of bird flu. Hence, we immediately checked and did spraying in the area of Jalan Dewi Sartika,” he said. To ascertain whether Merdana was infected by avian influenza virus, he should be observed for ten days. “The chicken had been known to be positive to avian influenza as indicated by the result of rapid test,” he added. Meanwhile, the owner of the chicken (Mudiana) said on Tuesday (Apr 12) that his wife once purchased a chicken in Galiran Market. Allegedly, the chicken purchased in the market had transmitted the bird flu virus to his chicken. As consequence, the officials of KDP Klungkung performed the spraying in Galiran Market every day to prevent the spread of bird flu. Galiran Market was the largest poultry market in Klungkung. Those poultries were brought in from different regions outside Bali. They were gathered in the market first and then distributed to some regions. No wonder the head of the KDP Klungkung, Gusti Ngurah Badiwangsa, stated that the poultries on the Galiran Market had been infected by bird flu and its consequence was fatal to Bali. (kmb20)

Japanese tourists traveling to Bali drop by 23.88 percent Denpasar (Bali Post)—

The tsunami shaking Japan recently started to show negative impacts. Bali Government Tourism Office (Disparda) recorded that total visit of Japanese tourist to Bali in March 2011 reached 17,288. Compared to the previous month, it recorded 22,713 tourists. The figure showed a significant decrease of 23.88 percent. Meanwhile, in February 2011 the arrival figures reached 19,122. “Indeed, the number shows a significant decline, almost 24 percent. Hopefully, the condition of Japan could recover immediately so that it would continuously allow their citizens to travel to Bali,” observed the Head of Data and Analysis, Bali Government Tourism Office, Putu Widyahari in Denpasar, Friday (Apr 15). According to her, such a condition had been predicted by tourism businesspeople previously. However, almost all of them were optimistic if the great reduction would only occur in short term where Japanese citizens remained shocked due to the incident. Until the end of this December, the arrival of Japanese tourists decline about 10 percent. Chairman of the Indonesian Hotels and Restaurants Association (PHRI) of Bali Chapter, Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardana Sukawati, had estimated the decrease. A devestating incident last Friday (15/4) caused Japanese Miko and his colleague, Erna, loss their withdrawal from Mandiri Bank Kuta Branch of USD 10 thousand. The incident happened around Majapahit Street, Kuta when the two was on an Avanza car. That day, they came to the bank around 11.30 am and planned to use the money to pay a wedding organizer, PT. Wedding Brider, which they are heading after the withdrawal transaction. Not yet there, the car went weird and one wheel seemed deflated so they

parked their car. As they went down, they did not know that the bag with the money was taken causing shock for the two of them when they got back. They didn’t realise anyone would come in and they did not see it. With that they straight away report it to Kuta Police which then several officers came to location to check it. It is still not known who have done it but the police are still investigating it. So far only witnesses statements are collected and a nail was found on the deflated wheel. Tourism businesspeople complain about the condition of road access to several tourist objects in Bali that are badly damaged. For instance, it happens to the roads in the area of Jatiluwih, Tabanan. Condition of potholed roads affects the interests of local and foreign tourists to pay a visit to the destination.

In the coming National Exam this Monday (18/4) thousands of papers from the Bali Education, Youth and Sports Agency (Disdikpora) have been distributed to regencies. In Gianyar , Gianyar Disdikpora has received nine boxes of it for High/Vocational Schools in Kebo Iwa Terminal, Gianyar, last Saturday (16/4). The papers came by 8.45 am with two guards from Indonesian

He said politicians and other important officials should be restricted to two consecutive five-year terms, including “the current president of the Council of State and his ministers” — a reference to himself. Castro officially took over from his brother Fidel in 2008, meaning he would be at least 86 at the end of a second term, depending on how the law is written. The proposal was made toward the end of a 2 1/2 hour speech in which the Cuban leader forcefully backed a laundry list of changes to the country’s socialist economic

system, including the eventual elimination of ration books and other subsidies, the decentralization of the island nation’s economy and a new reliance on supply and demand in some sectors. Still, he drew a line in the Caribbean sand as to which reforms should remain, telling party luminaries that he had rejected dozens of suggested reforms that would have allowed the concentration of property in private hands. Castro said the country had ignored its problems for too long, and made clear Cuba had to make tough decisions if it wanted to survive. “No country or person can spend more than they have,” he said. “Two plus two is four. Never five, much

less six or seven — as we have sometimes pretended.” Dressed in a white guayabera shirt, the Cuban leader alternated between reassurances that the economic changes were compatible with socialism, and a brutal assessment of the mistakes the country had made. UK’s Prince Harry promoted to captain in army Associated Press Writer

LONDON – Britain’s Prince Harry has been promoted to captain in the Air Corps after completing five years’ service in the army, palace officials said Sunday. The prince, a former lieutenant and trainee Apache helicopter pilot, would now be known as Captain Harry Wales, St. James’s Palace said in a statement. He was also awarded his Apache Badge on Thursday, marking the completion of an eight-month course that included day and night flying and ground school training.

The 26-year-old prince is now qualified to fly the aircraft without an instructor, and he has progressed to a further weapons handling course to complete his training as an Army Air Corps pilot. Harry became an army officer in April 2006, after a 44-week training course at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, southwest of London. He had served for 10 weeks in Afghanistan during 2007 and 2008 as an air controller. He will be best man at his brother Prince William’s wedding to Kate Middleton in London on April 29.

Since 1987, the Bocuse d’Or contest has given young chefs an opportunity to demonstrate their skills while at the same time has offering them a springboard for their careers. From one competition to the next, its international influence has grown constantly. With the successive creation of contests in Latin America, Asia and Europe, the Bocuse d’Or has become a showcase revealing outstanding talents and gastronomic trends from all over the world. The Bocuse d’Or Indonesia Selection Competition was a challenging 3 (three) hour cooking competition between top chefs of Indonesia (Indonesian Nationals). Sup-

ported by BCP (Bali Culinary Professionals), the extraordinary team from St. Regis Bali was suitably chosen to represent Bali in the competition. Using Norwegian Salmon as the main ingredient, the expert team created servings of an exceptional Salmon dish, all within 3 (three) hours. Of the fourteen, two servings were individually plated for the judges while the other twelve were skillfully presented on a tray. The judges were well impressed with the expertise and precision of the St. Regis team. The dishes presented were Fjord salmon with almond crust, garden vegetable in tomato aspic, potato truffle cruller, horseradish cream with salmon roe, pickled beetroot agar agar, basil cream coulis and grain mustard dill emulsion. The Bocuse d’Or Indonesia Selection Competition was judged by some members of the World Association of Chefs Society (WACS) and judging was based on certain criteria including kitchen organization, hygiene, taste and presentation details. Having been selected, the St. Regis Bali Chef team will represent Indonesia in Shanghai in 2012 for the Bocuse d’Or Asia Selection Competition. A total of 24 countries will meet at the grand final in Lyon thereafter.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc. The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion. The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines. In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Berlusconi say’s he’ll live to 120, won’t quit Associated Press Writer

ROME – Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi is vowing not to quit, as long as he’s needed. And he predicts he’ll be around for a long time, saying he’ll live to 120. The 74-year-old conservative leader at a political rally in Rome Saturday was having fun boasting about his staying power, just days after he told foreign correspondents

that he has designated his justice minister as political heir. Berlusconi had a pacemaker installed in 2006 after he collapsed during an appearance and has said he has beaten prostate cancer. He recently had jaw surgery to repair injuries sustained when a statuette was hurled at him during a 2009 rally. The premier drew cheers Saturday when he said he won’t quit. Elections are due in 2013.

RALEIGH, N.C. – A furious storm system that kicked up tornadoes, flash floods and hail as big as softballs has claimed at least 35 lives on a rampage that began in Oklahoma days ago, then smashed across several Southern states as it reached a new and deadly pitch in North Carolina and Virginia. Emergency crews searched for victims in hard-hit swaths of North Carolina, where 62 tornadoes were reported from the worst spring storm in two decades to hit the state. Ten people were confirmed dead in Bertie County, county manager Zee Lamb said. At least three deaths were reported in Virginia. Authorities warned the toll was likely to rise further Sunday as searchers probed shattered homes and businesses. The storm claimed its first lives Thursday night in Oklahoma, then roared through Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia. Seven people each were killed in Arkansas and Alabama, two people in Oklahoma and one person in Mississippi, authorities have said. In North Carolina, Gov. Beverly Perdue declared a state of emergency after reporting fatalities in at least four counties. But she declined to immediately confirm an exact number of deaths. KUTA - Minister of tourism and culture Jero Wacik said an investor from India had been ready to build Bali’s second airport in Buleleng. “The investor’s name is GVK,” he said here on Thursday when inspecting the island’s Kuta beach following its story on the Time magazine recently. At present up to 7,000 visitors come to Bali everyday which is above the normal capacity of 4,500 a day and as a result traffic jams always occur around tourist areas in the southern part of the island. “We hope with the new airport development will spread across the island. Bali’s northern part is expected to become a tourist center in the next 15 years,” he said. Jero Wacik said the construction of the new airport is ready to be realized, adding share distribution however is now still being negotiated between the government and the investor.

The Head of Jembrana Police, Irving Jaya, said that the police apply first priority status by inspecting and checking every person, vehicles and items. “One platoon of backup officer is standing by on the harbor to assist the inspection on site,” he added. BUSINESS World finance chiefs chastise U.S. on budget gap Reuters

WASHINGTON – World finance leaders on Saturday chastised the United States for not doing enough to shrink its massive overspending and warned that budget strains in rich nations threaten the global recovery. Finance ministers in Washington for semi-annual talks took sharper aim than in previous years at the United States’ $14 trillion debt. While most of the criticism came from emerging market economies, some advanced nations joined the chorus. Dutch Finance Minister Jan Kees de Jager warned that if the United States and other advanced nations move too slowly it could undermine confidence in the global economy. “Insufficient budgetary consolidation may spark off further escalation of debt sustainability issues, with repercussions on confidence and the still fragile financial sector,” de Jager told the International Monetary Fund’s steering committee. “Debt dynamics in other advanced economies, including the United States, are of concern.” The IMF this week said the U.S. budget deficit was on course to hit 10.8 percent of nation’s economic output this year, tying with Ireland for the highest deficit-to-GDP ratio among advanced economies. It urged Washington to move quickly to put a credible plan in place to tighten its belt. Brazil’s finance minister, Guido Mantega, offered sharp words in a thinly veiled attack on the United States. “Ironically, some of the countries that are responsible for the deepest crisis since the Great Depression, and have yet to solve their own problems, are eager to prescribe codes of conduct to the rest of the world,” he said. The Group of 20 countries agreed on Friday to a plan that could put more pressure on the United States to fix its deficits as well as push other leading economies to address their own shortcomings. The IMF’s advisory panel on Saturday said issues of financial stability and sovereign debt stability must be addressed, saying in a communique that “credible actions are needed to accelerate progress.” It emphasized the need for fiscal consolidation in advanced economies while avoiding overheating in emerging economies. The Obama administration and the U.S. Congress are locked in battle over how best to fix the deficit. Republicans are pushing for deep spending cuts as part of the argument over raising the nation’s $14.3 trillion debt limit, something which is needed to avoid an unprecedented U.S. debt default. The Republican-led House of Representatives on Friday approved a plan to slash spending by nearly $6 trillion over a decade and cut benefits for the elderly and poor. President Barack Obama, who has offered a competing vision to curb deficits by $4 trillion over 12 years, said on Thursday the Republican plan would create “a nation of potholes.” The White House is wary about cutting spending sharply while the economic recovery remains fragile. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told fellow finance ministers on Saturday caution was needed. “We are committed to fiscal reforms that will restrain spending and reduce deficits while not threatening the economic recovery,” he said. Geithner was quick to say others whose policies contribute to global imbalances must change too, “especially those whose fundamentals call for greater exchange rate flexibility...” The United States has repeatedly called for China to relax its limits on the yuan currency. Yi Gang, a deputy governor of China’s central bank, called for “more rigorous” efforts by advanced economies to tighten budgets and said the IMF needs to strengthen its monitoring of these rich nations. Russian Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin, taking aim at the U.S. Federal Reserve, said central banks that buy government debt to keep interest rates low were abetting fiscal profligacy. The Fed is on course to complete the purchase of $600 billion in U.S. government debt by the end of June, which would take its total purchases of mortgage-related and government debt since December 2008 to nearly $2.3 trillion. Echoing Republican lawmakers and even some Fed officials, Kudrin said those purchases blurred the line between monetary and fiscal policy in a way that could jeopardize a central bank’s independence. “We observe this process with some wonderment, since it amounts to the monetization of those countries’ budget deficits,” Kudrin said.

SEOUL - U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton used a brief stopover in South Korea to discuss joint efforts to ratify a free trade agreement and get North Korea back to nuclear disarmament talks. Clinton met with Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan on Saturday evening before planned talks early Sunday with President Lee Myung-bak. Clinton told Kim that she was “very encouraged and determined” to get the free trade agreement ratified. The two countries worked out a hard-fought compromise in early December altering the original deal, signed in June 2007, because of U.S. complaints that it did not secure enough access for American automakers. Moves for ratification had also stalled amid changes in government in both countries and the global financial crisis. “We will be consulting and making the case together to our respective legislatures and I’m very confident that there will be a positive outcome that will benefit both of our countries,” Clinton said.

Kim said Clinton’s visit would provide a fresh impetus for ratification. The pact, which slashes tariffs and removes other barriers to commerce, requires approval by Congress and South Korea’s National Assembly before it can take effect. It is the largest such pact for Washington since the North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico in 1994. Clinton did not mention North Korea in public remarks before holding talks with Kim. But the South Korean foreign minister thanked her for U.S. support in dealing with the North and said he looked forward to “working closely with you in resolving the North Korean nuclear issues.” International efforts to achieve North Korea’s denuclearization have stalled and tensions between the two Koreas have spiked, especially since the sinking in

March last year of a South Korean warship that killed 46 sailors and a deadly North Korean attack on a front-line South Korean island in November. Stewart, best known for his role as Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek, spoke to The Sunday Times about his decision to become a patron of Dignity in Dying, which campaigns for a change in the law. “A lot of it has to do with my age. I had a heart procedure five years ago. I was 70 last year and there is something about achieving threescore years and 10, isn’t there? “Then I had had a family member who had been very ill and quite recently I’d heard the story of an illness and a death,” he told the newspaper. He did not want to go into detail about his female friend’s death, but said she was “driven to an extreme situation of ending their life in the most ghastly way”. Sir Patrick, who was diagnosed with coronary heart disease five years ago, said: “I have the strong feeling that, should the time come for me, having had no role in my birth I would like there to be a choice I might make about how I die.” He added that the choice to have an assisted death “should be a right”. Actor Nicolas Cage arrested in New Orleans Associated Press Writer

NEW ORLEANS – Actor Nicolas Cage was arrested after he got drunk in the city’s French Quarter and argued in the street with his wife over whether a house they were in front of was theirs, police said Saturday. The couple was in front of a home that Cage insisted they were renting, police said. When she said it wasn’t theirs, Cage grabbed her arm, according to a police news release.

Cage started hitting vehicles and tried to get into a taxi, police said. An officer saw that Cage was drunk and told him to get out of the cab. Cage then started yelling at the officer. The actor has been booked on charges of domestic abuse battery, disturbing the peace and public drunkenness. He was released on $11,000 bond Saturday. Representatives for Cage could not immediately be reached Saturday. Cage has been a frequent visitor

A few months after the transplant Thiriot’s regular reproductive cycle had established itself and she became pregnant quite normally. “Victoria is totally normal and dosen’t have Turner syndrome,” she said.

Kolo Toure faces a two-year ban after testing positive for a substance that his former manager at Arsenal, Arsene Wenger, said was in a diet pill belonging to the defender’s wife. “I am very sad for him at this moment in time. MONTE CARLO – Rafael Nadal needed to produce one of his most stunning performances on clay on Saturday to edge an injured Andy Murray 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 and book a place in the final of the Monte Carlo Masters. For the 15th time in the last two decades, a Spaniard will figure in the title match at the Country club, with six-time winner Nadal bidding for a seventh straight title here against compatriot David Ferrer. The Spanish fourth seed earlier ended the surprise run of Jurgen Melzer 6-3, 6-2, a day after the Austrian had put out Roger Federer. Nadal needed just shy of three hours to go past Murray, who was reportedly nursing an injured right elbow and who received treatment in the third set after putting up a titanic struggle in the first two sets. The Spanish world number one did lose his first set in Monte Carlo since the 2009 final against Novak Djokovic, however, as Murray turned in a fighting effort. “It’s a fantastic victory for me,” said Nadal. “It was a very, very difficult match. It’s a dream to get to another final here. “This is a great start to the clay season. I’m very pleased, it’s good for me.” Nadal has now won 36 straight matches in the principality heading into his clash with Ferrer, who he has beaten 11 times in 15 encounters. Murray fought a 65-minute opening set, going down in the end but rallying well in the second with an attacking game that left Nadal puzzled as to the best response. Murray won a marathon 19-minute game, saving five break points for a 3-1 lead and finally levelling the match after a huge effort. But as a pre-match pain-killing injection began to wear off, Murray’s level dropped, with Nadal able to close out a hard-fought win

with little resistance in the deciding set. “I didn’t know up until (the final minutes) whether I was going to play or not,” said Murray. “I had a cortisone injection local anaesthetic in my elbow before the match. “I’ve never had any problems with my elbow before. Yesterday, at the beginning of the second set (in his quarter-final), I felt something, but I managed to play through it. “This morning I was hitting, warming up fine. I went to hit some serves; I couldn’t serve. “I’m happy that I gave it my best, but I think I can do better,” he said, before revealing that the effects of the injection began to wear off after roughly two hours and 40 minutes of the match. “It was disappointing because I felt like I was playing well. I have to see how it feels tomorrow and what I do from here.” Ferrer doused cold water on Melzer’s dream run after the Austrian had stunned Federer in the quarter-finals. Ferrer was playing a Monte Carlo semi-final for the second straight year.

Atlanta was eliminated by Orlando in last year’s playoffs in the most lopsided four-game sweep in NBA history, but this one was much different. The Hawks led by as many as 18 points while running multiple bodies at Howard all night, and the rest of the Magic failed to step up. “It’s a seven-game series and anything can happen,” Hawks coach Larry Drew said. “All I wanted us to come in here and do is play hard and maintain our composure. ... MASHANTUCKET, Connecticut – Victor Ortiz dethroned previously unbeaten World Boxing Council welterweight champion Andre Berto Saturday in an action-packed 12-round fight that saw both men on the canvas. Ortiz emerged with a convincing unanimous decision, improving to 29-2-2 with 22 wins inside the distance as he captured the WBC belt. Ortiz knocked down Berto for the first time in the first round, and Berto responded by

sending the off-balance challenger to the canvas in the second. Ortiz rattled Berto in the third and punished the champion in the middle rounds. The sixth was a thriller as Berto, standing his ground in the middle of the ring, knocked down Ortiz, only for Ortiz to drop the champion later in the same round. It was Berto’s first defeat in 28 professional fights. The ringside judges scored it 115-110, 114-112 and 114-111 for Ortiz, who had a point deducted in one round for hitting behind the head. “I fought like a possessed man, because that’s what the world and the

crowd of boxing made me,” said Ortiz, who said he was stung by predictions that he couldn’t beat Berto. Berto had made five successful title defences since he knocked out Miguel Rodriguez in June 2008 to take the belt. But he looked like he might not make it out of the first round on Saturday. McLaren’s Hamilton wins F1 Chinese Grand Prix Associated Press Writer

SHANGHAI – McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton overcame a pre-race mechanical drama to win a thrilling Chinese Grand Prix on Sunday, passing Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel for the lead with five laps remaining. Vettel made a strong bid for three straight wins to start the Formula One season but he could not hold off Hamilton, who made one more pit stop than the German and had fresher tires at the end. “It was one of the best races I have experienced,” said Hamilton, whose last victory was last year’s Belgian GP. “It feels amazing to be able to bring it home. I am absolutely overwhelmed. It feels like a long, long time (since winning). I am so proud and extremely grateful.” Red Bull’s Mark Webber, who started 18th, made a remarkable charge to the front to finish third. Vettel, who has 12 victories in 65 career starts, was trying to become the first driver since Michael Schumacher in 2004 to start the season with three straight victories. Hamilton came close to being out of contention before the race even started, when a fuel leak was discovered in his engine. McLaren mechanics worked frantically in the garage with the seconds ticking down until the pitlane closed. Had they missed the deadline, Hamilton would have started from pitlane rather than third on the grid. They sent him out on the installation lap with only one minute to spare, but with much of the engine cover missing, and that had to be drilled onto the car while it was sitting on the grid.

“I had real confidence in the guys they would figure it out,” Hamilton said. “As I was driving to the light I was nervous that just as I got to it, it would go red, but fortunately I got out.” McLaren’s Jenson Button, last year’s race winner, was fourth, ahead of Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg and Ferrari’s Felipe Massa, who all led at various stages at Shanghai International Circuit. Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso was seventh, ahead of Mercedes’ Schumacher, and Renault’s Vitaly Petrov, with Sauber’s Kamui Kobayashi taking the final point in 10th place. Vettel started from pole but was passed by both McLarens before the first corner. He managed to get ahead of both in the first round of pit stops, overcoming an odd incident in which Button mistakenly pulled into the Red Bull garage right in front of him, and had to be waved on to the correct space. Rosberg had already changed his tires by then and inherited the lead while the others pitted, but Vettel went ahead again after the second round of stops. Unlike McLaren, Red Bull then decided not to pit

again and Vettel acknowledged after the race that the strategy of doing the final 25 laps on one set of tires “wasn’t the best.” “The pace was there, but we decided to be patient and go with two stops, and when it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work,” Vettel said. “I don’t see second today as a disappointment.” Hamilton was fourth with 16 laps remaining and all pitstops completed. He passed Rosberg for third on lap 42, then got past Massa two laps later to move up to second, 4.6 seconds behind Vettel. Hamilton, who now has 15 career wins, whittled the gap down over the next eight laps, eventually passing Vettel comfortably on turn seven with five laps remaining. Meanwhile, Rosberg, Button and Massa were struggling on worn tires, and were swallowed up by Webber, who made an extraordinary charge through the field in the second half of the race. The Australian was in 17th place with more than a quarter of the race gone, but having started on hard tires, he was able to use softer-compound ones throughout the latter half, passing Schumacher, Alonso, Massa and Rosberg in the final 15 laps. “All of a sudden I just felt comfortable with the car,” Webber said. As for Schumacher, he won this race in 2006 for the last of his record 91 victories. With three races completed, Vettel leads the drivers’ standings with 68 points, ahead of Hamilton (47), Button (38) and Webber (37). The next race will be the Turkish Grand Prix on May 8.

“Shame McLaren won in a way, but also we can’t let Seb get too far away. It was a good day for the racing, I think, and a good day for us in terms of points for the team.” Webber had appeared to be making little progress in the opening stages, as he struggled to get through the midfield traffic while on hard tyres. But he later flew on softs and came through to third with a string of late moves. “It was an interesting GP, we decided to start on the prime hard tyre,” said Webber. “We know it was not the more desired tyre. We got that out of the way, and it was quite tricky. It was not easy to come back with those guys. “But I got the car back and we really started from there. To still see P17 on board after 15 laps [was hard], then I felt comfortable with car, and I had a few sets of tyres left after qualifying so maybe the best bet is not to take part in qualifying and go from there! “Jokes aside, great job this weekend, the guys haven’t given up - it is a drive for everyone at the factory.”
