NEW YORK - Major television channel NBC has tapped YouTube star Lilly Singh to helm a late-night talk show, making the Canadian the first woman to host on a US broadcast network in more than three decades. The evening talk shows have been a mainstay of American television for more than half-a-century -- but their hosts are generally white men. The late comedian Joan Rivers did host her own show from 1986 to 1988 on Fox, but that channel -- unlike competitors ABC, CBS and NBC -- is not known for its late-night talk programming and no longer uses the format. Comedian Samantha Bee also hosts her own evening satire news show entitled “Full Frontal,” but it airs on the cable channel TBS and has a much smaller audience than the four national broadcast networks. Singh, 30, will take over the last of

NBC’s three slots that is currently hosted by Carson Daly and begins at 1:35 am EST. A Canadian born to Indian parents, Singh gained fame for her YouTube channel “Superwoman,” launched in 2010, which today boasts 14.5 million subscribers and nearly three billion total views. She announced her new gig as host of “A Little Late with Lilly Singh” as a guest on NBC’s “The Tonight Show, the network’s most-watched late-night program that’s hosted by Jimmy Fallon. It will be “kind of like my YouTube channel,” she said, adding that “I think it’s a little awesome for an Indian Canadian woman to be on a late-night show.” (afp)

Jackson fans sue alleged victims for ‘sullying his memory’ ORLEANS - Three Michael Jackson fan groups are suing his alleged victims in France for “sullying his memory” by taking part in the “Leaving Neverland” documentary, the fans’ lawyer told AFP Friday. The Michael Jackson Community -- which claims to be the “official fan club forum” for the “King of Pop” -- and the MJ Street and On The Line groups accuse Robson Wade and James Safechuck of “lynching” the star. The case, which will heard by a court in Orleans in northern France in July, follows reports that Jacksons’ children were also considering taking legal action against the men, who say that Jackson sexually abused them when they were children. Lawyer Emmanuel Ludot, who has previously successfully sued Jackson’s doctor for causing dis-

tress to his fans by giving him the drugs that killed him, said the groups “want to discredit the accusations of paedophilia” that have long dogged the star. He said that the “indignity of the extremely grave accusations” made by Wade and Safechuck in “Leaving Neverland” had sullied the memory of the singer, who died in 2009. Jackson’s image had been affected by the allegations as well as “the whole community of his fans”, the lawyer said. “Leaving Neverland” was first broadcast in the US on HBO earlier this month and has since broken streaming records in Britain. - ‘Traitor’ But the film has outraged some of the late idol’s fans, who have waged an often vicious social media campaign against his ac-

cusers. A number of radio stations, from Australia to Canada have stopped playing Jackson’s music after the documentary was aired, and the creators of “The Simpsons” also shelved one of the animated series’ classic episodes because it featured Jackson’s voice. French luxury brand Louis Vuitton dropped Jackson-themed clothing Thursday from a collection it had shown at Paris fashion week in January, saying it found the “allegations in the documentary deeply troubling and disturbing”. Virgil Abloh, the first black designer to lead a major Paris fashion house, was assailed on social media for the decision by Jackson fans. “Shame on you for removing all items related to Michael Jackson,” one wrote on Instagram, while another accused him of being a “traitor... on the white people side”.

In 2014, French lawyer Ludot won nominal damages of one euro ($0.8) from Jackson’s personal doc-

tor Conrad Murray for the hurt he had caused to his fans for his part in the singer’s death. (afp)

The death toll was expected to rise as emergency services struggled to reach people in hardhit areas, with more than 70 people injured and 4,150 evacuated. The floods -- triggered by torrential rain and landslides on Saturday -- damaged numerous homes in the northeastern town of Sentani, said national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. “The number of casualties and impact of the disaster will likely increase as search and rescue teams are still trying to reach other affected areas,” he said. The waters had receded but of-

ficials were still trying to evacuate people from areas obstructed by “fallen trees, rocks, mud and other material”, Nugroho added. In Doyo, one of the most affected areas, a housing complex was littered with huge rocks believed to have rolled down from a nearby mountain, an AFP reporter at the scene said. Sediment and waste swept by the floods piled up on the pavement. The non-stop wail of ambulance sirens could be heard, as heavy equipment was used to clear the roads. The government has announced a 14-day state of emer-

gency, said Jayapura police chief Victor Dean Mackbon. Video footage showed rescuers administering oxygen to a victim who appeared to be trapped beneath a fallen tree. Officers rescued a five-month-old baby who was trapped for hours under the rubble, Papua military spokesman Muhammad Aidi said. The whereabouts of the parents are unknown. A propeller plane lay partly crushed on a runway at the airport of nearby provincial capital Jayapura. “The rain started last night and went on until around 1:00 am this morning,” said Lilis Puji Hastuti, a 29-year-old mother of two young

children in Sentani. “Our house was flooded with thick mud ... we immediately grabbed our valuables and ran to a neighbour’s (two-storey) house to seek refuge. “It’s hard to get out of the area because many roads are blocked... I’m worried, sad and scared all at once,” she told AFP. In Sentani, tents have been set up to take in flood victims and treat the wounded. Papua shares a border with independent Papua New Guinea on an island just north of Australia. Flooding is common in Indonesia, especially during the rainy season which runs from October to April. In January, floods and landslides killed at least 70 people on Sulawesi

island, while earlier this month hundreds in West Java province were forced to evacuate when torrential rains triggered severe flooding. The Southeast Asian archipelago of some 17,000 islands is one of the most disaster-prone nations on Earth, straddling the Pacific Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates collide. Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are common. (afp) News can also be heard in “Bali Image” at Global Radio FM 96.5 from 9.30 until 10.00 am.
