Sean Penn says he is not the next Liam Neeson
LOS ANGELES — Sean Penn surfs, shoots, sprints, punches and fights for his life in the geopolitical thriller “The Gunman.” At age 54, it’s easy to assume that Penn, as a rogue ex-special forces officer, is drifting into territory that Liam Neeson claimed just a few years ago with a series of action-heavy box office hits. Add in the fact that “The Gun- some of his friends as consultants, their skills for high-powered jobs man,” in theaters Friday, is directed he also took some time to focus at shadowy international organizaby Pierre Morel, who launched the and refine the bones of the script, tions along the way, Penn notes that “Taken” franchise and Neeson’s taking what he knows about NGOs though there are real world paralrenaissance and the comparisons and military tactics and applying it lels in “The Gunman,” that it’s not to the story. meant to be a political movie. seem even more apt. In showing extreme situations, whether it’s Jason Bourne taking down secret government operations or John McClane defying the odds to defeat a terrorist and save some hostages, action films can sometimes feel more disconnected from reality than sci-fi. That’s, of course, part of the fun for actors and audiences alike. Penn, however, was drawn to “The Gunman” and the character of Jim Terrier for exactly the opposite reason — it reminded him of people he knew. Aykroyd, Belushi widow launch Blues Brothers record label
LOS ANGELES — The Blues Brothers have found a new mission. Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi’s widow, Judy Belushi, have launched Blues Brothers Records. The new record label is dedicated to the development of blues artists. The label’s music will be distributed by Capitol Music Group’s Blue Note Records. Aykroyd and John Belushi originally performed as the sunglass-
clad siblings on “Saturday Night Live” and later in the 1980 film “The Blues Brothers.” Aykroyd said in a statement Monday that he’s excited for the label to find the next generation of blues performers. Aykroyd previously co-founded the House of Blues, which will be partnering with the record label for promotional events at House of Blues venues. (ap)
Sinead O’Connor done with ‘Nothing Compares 2U’ NEW YORK - “Nothing Compares 2U” propelled Sinead O’Connor to global fame and became the soundtrack for the broken-hearted all over the world. But after 25 years she says she is done with the tearjerker smash hit. The outspoken Irish singer said Monday that she had been trained never to sing a track with which she does not connect emotionally -- and plans to stick to that. “After 25 years of singing it, nine months or so ago I finally ran out of anything I could use in order to bring some emotion to it,” she wrote on her Facebook page. “I don’t want audiences to be disappointed coming along to a show and then not hearing it, so (I) am letting you know here that you won’t.” O’Connor said that she would be “lying” if she kept singing the hit, which was written by Prince. “I’m trained in honesty. I can’t act. It just isn’t in my training,” she wrote. The announcement is unusually blunt for a pop performer. Many artists constantly wrestle with whether to keep doing songs that made them famous or to focus on newer material less known to casual fans. O’Connor had won critical acclaim with her 1987 debut album “The Lion and the Cobra” but scored a massive hit with “Nothing Compares 2U.” (afp)
