LOS ANGELES - Rihanna is suing her father over his use of their last name for a business.

In the lawsuit filed Tuesday in federal court in Los Angeles, Rihanna, whose full name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty, says that her father, Ronald Fenty, and his partner have violated her trademark and falsely suggested that their business, Fenty Entertainment, is affiliated with her.

The 30-year-old singer says in the lawsuit that she has used the name for her cosmetics brand and other businesses since 2012.

Fenty Entertainment, which advertises itself as a talent and production company,

was founded in 2017.

The lawsuit asks the court to order Ronald Fenty to stop using the brand name, and it seeks damages to be determined later.

An email sent to Fenty Entertainment seeking comment wasn’t immediately returned. (ap)

Jason Reitman to direct Ghostbusters sequel for summer 2020

LOS ANGELES - Ivan Reitman is passing the Ghostbusters torch to his son.

Four-time Oscar nominee Jason Reitman is set to direct a new installment in the Ghostbusters series for Sony Pictures set to come out in the summer of 2020. Reitman tweeted Tuesday night that he’s “finally got the keys to the car.”

Ivan Reitman directed and produced the original “Ghostbusters,” which came out in 1984, and its sequel in 1989.

The studio says that this new Ghostbusters will be going back to its roots and will be the next chapter in the original story. Sony attempted to reboot Ghostbusters in 2016 with gender-flipped leads, but the costly film disappointed at the box office.

Entertainment Weekly first reported the news.

Production begins this summer, but no word yet on the cast. (ap)

BOGOR - The first round of official debates of the two pairs of Indonesian presidential and vice presidential candidates kicks off on Thursday, with law, human rights, corruption, and terrorism-related issues to feature in the debate`s agenda.

This long-awaited event seems to have gained momentum since nine days before it is held, two important incidents occurred that are so relevant to the debate agenda that the pairs of Joko Widodo-Ma`ruf Amin and Prabowo Subianto-Sandiaga Uno need to respond.

The first incident is related to the bomb terror targeting two commissioners of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Agus Raharjo and Laode Muhammad Syarif, while the second one concerns the formation of a joint team to uncover the Novel Baswedan case.

The bomb threats occurred on Jan 9. Raharjo`s house was terrorized by unknown persons, who placed a bag with pipes inside, but the police investigators were unable to find any explosive materials in the bag.

On the same day, Syarif`s home was also attacked with two cocktail bombs, though the home-made bombs did not cause any damage to the house.

Raharjo lives in the Graha Indah housing complex, Jatiasih, Bekasi City, West Java Province, while Syarif resides on 42 C South Kalibata Street, Pancoran, South

Jakarta. Apart from the fact that the two KPK commissioners and their family members were unscathed by the bomb terror, these crimes have revived the public`s memory of the acid attack on Baswedan on April 11, 2017.

The assault, which occurred while Baswedan was heading home after performing Fajr, or the Dawn prayer, at a mosque near his house, had harmed his eyes, necessitating medical treatment in Jakarta and Singapore. The acid attack was reportedly launched by two motorcyclists, but they managed to escape and are still at large until

now. This retired police officer had joined the anti-graft agency in 2007 and since then had been frequently terrorized and attacked.

In 2012, his motorcycle was seriously damaged after being attacked by supporters of convicted Amran Batalipu, a former district head of Buol, in Central Sulawesi Province. In connection with the case of bomb terrors, the Jakarta Metropolitan Police have deployed six personnel to safeguard the houses of two KPK commissioners.

As revealed by the Jakarta Metropolitan Police spokesman, Sen. Coms. Argo Yuwono, on Jan 10, the policemen were assigned to safeguard the homes of KPK Chairman Raharjo and KPK Commissioner Syarif round-the-clock.

The on-duty policemen were also backed by the police mobile patrols in the two commissioners` residential areas, Yuwono remarked. Following the bomb threats on two of the anti-graft body`s commissioners on Jan 9, the National Police have also pledged to consider a discourse on giving the KPK commissioners the rights to possess weapons.

Tourism players complain about roaming cattle at Gilimanuk Bay

SINGARAJA - After being officially opened recently, completeness of the Soenda Ketjil or Lesser Sunda thematic museum in the exharbor area of Buleleng leaves a problem. As evidence, the museum taking advantage of the Dutch heritage building until the beginning of this year has not been equipped with history books and films telling about the history and other documents related to Buleleng as the capital of Lesser Sunda covering Bali, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

Head of the Buleleng Culture Service, Gede Komang, recently stated that all building renovation projects and exhibition space arrangement and procurement of supporting facilities amounting to IDR 1 billion are the aid of the Directorate of Cultural Heritage at the Ministry of Education and Culture. In addition, supplementary documents in the form of books and films are also the assistance from the central government. Unfortunately, the continued aid is not clear until these days. It is said the delay in the realization of the complementary aid happens because the official in charge underwent a position mutation.

“Two other types of aid having not been realized are the procurement of books and the making of films.

Incidentally, the activities financed by the central government are also handled by the central government.

Seeing this situation, we are definitely unable to do

much,” he said.

According to this bureaucrat from Tejakula village, Tejakula, this is the reason why the assistance had not yet been realized because the central official handling the project had already been transferred. Unfortunately, the new official cannot be ascertained where he is.

Thus, the Lesser Sunda Museum inaugurated in March 2018 has not yet been equipped with books and films as a reference for research and education of visitors.

Some of the items are heritage of Mr. I Gusti Ketut Pudja picked up from the Indonesian National Archives (ANRI) and from the Jakarta National Museum. The historical items include photographs, handwriting, several books and clothes. “We have picked up the collection of his heritages (Mr. I Gusti Ketut Pudja—Ed) after getting agreement from his family,” he explained.

In addition, this year he has been restoring the official car of Lesser Sunda governor. Currently, the car is displayed in the courtyard of the Buleleng Museum, located in the same area as the Seni Sasana Budaya Hall of Singaraja. The historic car will be restored to suit its original appearance. After that, the car is on display in the Lesser Sunda Museum building. (kmb38)

NEGARA - Gilimanuk Bay tourist area remains often to be filled with cows belonging to local residents.

This matter is complained by tourism players in Gilimanuk. Other than disrupting trees or park, the grazing cows also disturb visitors and their dung is scattered here and there.

The Wisata Tirta community group leader, Agung Alit Wirawan, stated on Wednesday (Jan. 16) the cows frequently appear and roam around the Gilimanuk Bay area. It is very disturbing to visitors and they also savor the existing plants while their dungs pollute the area there.

He said the cows roaming around for food belong to local community.

After the village authority issued a circular, the residents raising cattle or goats are expected to keep theirs in a cage so as not to roam around the settlements, public places and tourist objects.

He hoped the cattle owners could understand and be aware so that they will hold their cattle so that do not interfere with tourism objects having been arranged and developed for the benefit of the Gilimanuk community.

Zona Bahari community group leader, Selamet Jaryanto, also complained about the frequent occurrence of cattle roaming around the Gilimanuk Bay tourist attraction. The

released cattle roaming for food can surely disturb the comfort of visitors enjoying the tourist attractions.

In order not to disturb the tourist objects and for the convenience of visitors, Selamet hoped that relevant parties can find a solution so that tourist objects are not disturbed, while the cattle owners can also keep theirs properly.

Meanwhile, Head of the Jembrana Tourism and Culture Agency, I Nengah Alit, said that currently visitors to Gilimanuk Bay have begun to be crowded. However, the development remains to face many obstacles such as people that are not aware if the development of tourism objects is for them as well.

According to him, the tourist attraction must be clean, beautiful, comfortable as well as safe. The existence of cattle that frequently roam around is indeed very disturbing.

His service asked the owners of the cattle and other livestock to realize and help the efforts develop tourist objects in Gilimanuk. The cattle should be keep in their cage so as not to disturb the beauty and comfort there.

Tourism players hoped the village authority and local leaders to provide an understanding for the cattle owners and make approaches so as not to harm or disrupt tourism development. (120)

TABANAN - Residents of the Gunung Sari hamlet, Jatiluwih, Penebel subdistrict, were shocked by the death of resident from the Philippines, Grace Tarjoto, 62, in the bedroom of her house on Wednesday (Jan. 16).

The cause of the victim’s death is not yet known because from the results of external examinations, there is no indication of violence found nor having a history of illness.

As information compiled from police station, Grace, a resident from the Philippines, but has become an Indonesian citizen, was first discovered to have been no longer breathing by her workers, Zero Ardiansyah and Ni Nyoman Pujiasih. According to witnesses, since Tuesday (Jan. 15), the victim did not leave the room, but it is considered normal. Moreover, on Monday Grace had time to go out and worked with her workers. But until Wednesday morning, Grace did not leave the room. Finally, Zero and Pujiasih decided to wake her up, but there was no response. When contacted through mobile phone, Grace did not pick up.

Feeling suspicious, the two wit-

nesses decided to report the case to Penebel Police Station. After the inspection by opening the door of her room, police found Grace in a lifeless condition. She was found in a position remaining in a state of sleeping complete with a blanket.

Chief of Penebel Police, I Ketut Mastra Budaya, said the cause of Grace’s death is unknown. When the members did crime scene investigation and external examination, there were no any indications of violence found even suspicious objects. Additionally, the victim did not have a history of illness. “However, from the information of her workers, Grace is a heavy smoker,” he said. Furthermore, Grace’s body was taken to the Tabanan Hospital while waiting for her family from Jakarta.

Chief Mastra added that Grace had been an Indonesian citizen because since 1993 she had settled at Jatiluwih village, Penebel. Every day she operates her red rice milling machine and has a bike rental services. “Possibly her body will be cremated because it has become a resident of Jatiluwih village,” he explained. (kmb28)

To handle landslides at Terunyan, District govt immediately comes down with heavy equipment

Revolution at gates of protest-hit Paris men’s fashion Paris men’s fashion week started Tuesday with a tsunami of new talent but with shows also threatened by the “yellow vests” protest movement that has been rocking France.

Dior moved its show from Saturday to Friday to avoid the weekly Paris demonstrations which often turn violent after its flagship shop on the Champs Elysees was looted after a march in November.

But it is the boiling anger of fashion critics that reclusive superstar designer Hedi Slimane will be dreading, after they gave his first outing for Celine a kicking in October.

Slimane was accused of thrashing the feminist legacy of his predecessor Phoebe Philo -- a charge he is unlikely to face for the first men’s collection in Celine’s history.

Another, quieter revolution is also taking place on the men’s catwalks, with an ultra-hip gang of streetwear and cult Japanese designers being welcomed into the elite Paris fold for the first time.

Seeing from the cliff condition, it remains to have the potential to experience a subsequent landslide,” he said.

He added that his side had called for the headman of Terunyan to make coordination with the forestry agency, so that the current bare condition of forests can be immediately reforested. (kmb40)

MANGUPURA - River flows under the Umalas Kangin Bridge, Kerobokan, North Kuta, is full of garbage. The piles of garbage with the height reaching the bridge edge blocked the flows of the Yeh Poh River.

Hamlet chief of the Umalas Kangin, Kerobokan Kelod, I Made Suarka, admitted to have reported the condition to relevant agencies.

However, until now there has been no treatment, even though his authority is worried if the high piles of the garbage will damage the bridge.

“I have sent a letter requesting for assistance to take out the garbage to the Badung Environment and Sanitation Agency (DLHK), but the letter was then returned and asked to be submitted to the Badung Public Works and Settlement Agency (PUPR). So, the application letter was sent to the agency last year,” said Made Suarka, on Tuesday (Jan. 15).

According to him, the increasingly higher piles of garbage make people worry about closing the river flow. If the water flows from the upstream is heavy, then the

DENPASAR - In 2018, the Bali provincial government targeted foreign tourist arrivals of around 6.3 million people, but could only be realized around 6.1 million people. This happened due to several factors such as the eruption of Mount Agung, the earthquakes in Lombok, and several other disasters in the country. Besides, it was also caused by the decline in foreign tourists visit from China due to the case of travel from China selling cheap packages, so that Bali provincial government supported by stakeholders and Chinese government took decisive action to quickly stop the practice of such cheap packages.

“Onwards, such cases must always be monitored so that Indonesia, especially Bali, does not become a cheap business object disrupting the government and tourism in Bali. Such cases must also be monitored, whether carried out by foreign or domestic illegal tourism businessmen,” said the tourism observer, Dr. I Putu Anom, on Tuesday (Jan. 15).

This is very important to be done considering that in 2019 the Ministry of Tourism targeted 20 million foreign tourists visiting Indonesia, and Bali is targeted to meet around 40 percent, or around 8 million foreign tourists. According to this Chairman of the Association

of Indonesian Tourism Scholars (ICPI) of Bali Chapter, to reach the targets is not easy because it must also consider the quality of tourists other than the quantity.

This will include the high level of tourist expenditure and their care of the nature and Balinese sublime culture. The entrepreneurs and Balinese people are highly expected and obliged to preserve the nature and culture of Bali. Unavoidably, tourism indeed results in both positive and negative impacts.

Additionally, to reach the target it needs promotional activities synergized with the promotion carried out by the district or municipal and provincial government along with

tourism stakeholders coupled with improved product quality and infrastructure that support tourism activities in all regions of Bali. Tourism promotion is also very necessary to include the management of tourism villages, tourist objects and the artists to introduce the uniqueness of each product and tourist object.

“Hopefully, in 2019 there will be many MICE events held in Bali.

Similarly, it’s needed to increase the creativity of tourist attractions going hand in hand with Balinese culture. Promotions are also targeted at potential tourist market in various countries so that tourism promotion becomes more efficient and effective,” he said. (win)

DJ-turned-designer Heron Preston, the son of a San Francisco cop, who has previously taken inspiration from New York binmen and street cleaners’ uniforms, opened the packed six-day schedule.

An old pal of both the rapper Kanye West and Off-White tyro Virgil Abloh, whose first collection of menswear designs for Louis Vuitton have been a huge hit, he is one of a wave of young designers taking streetwear upmarket.

He set his first Paris show in a fake airport terminal replete with metal detectors, with looks drawn from security guards, transport workers’ uniforms and others who frequent “24-hour places”.

He also purloined the Securitas three-dot logo which he adapted to fit his own “style” tag written in Cyrillic.

Preston, 35, first came to notice alongside Abloh at the streetwear brand Been Trill.

BANGLI - Bangli district government will immediately deploy two units of heavy equipment to deal with landslides at Cemara Landung hamlet, Terunyan, Kintamani. In addition to dredging materials stockpiling the road, the district government will also dredge and normalize waterways from the hills towards the lake getting amassed by materials. The plan was conveyed by the Head of the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of Bangli, I Wayan Karmawan, when contacted on Tuesday (Jan. 15).

He explained that from the results of review, it was found the overflow of landslide materials reached several people’s houses and fields because the condition of waterways from the hill top to the lake experiencing siltation.

Responding to this condition, the regent already ordered the team to immediately bring down the heavy equipment to the location as an emergency measure. Tabanan has six liquor industries

Total production reaches 28.6m liters a year

TABANAN - As a whole, Tabanan currently has six alcoholic beverage industries and has absorbed 259 workers. From the data of the Tabanan Industry and Trade Agency, one industry is located in Kerambitan sub-district, two in East Selemadeg, one in Tabanan and two others in Kediri. The industries produce liquor of group B and C with basic ingredients of rice and fruit fermentation. For a year, their total production reaches 28.6 million liters.

Though they had been granted an industrial permit from the central government valid for a year, the liquor industry is also required to have permit of business premises and trade business permit issued by the Tabanan Integrated Licensing Office, considering the location of production is in the region of Tabanan district. “Every six months, they (industry players—Ed) are also required to submit production reports to the province and district as a form of supervision so that pro-

duction capacity does not exceed the maximum limit having been permitted by central government,” he explained.

He said that since this is an industry with a large capacity, the guidance becomes the authority of the province, while the district government is only tasked to conduct supervision. Regarding the sales target of the liquor industry in Tabanan, according to Gusti Ayu Wiryati, each industry has its own market. But most of the products are marketed to restaurants, hotels and some of them are marketed to large supermarkets.

Meanwhile, regarding revenue of the alcoholic beverages, the Trade Division Head at the Tabanan Industry and Trade Agency, Prima-

yani, stated that based on Perda No. 2/2016 concerning alcoholic beverages, the agency only regulates sales supervision issues, and does not regulate the levy issues. “Alcoholic drinks have been subject to excise from the central government. Local authority just issues the business permit and oversees circulation,” she said.

Primayani continued that from the results of the last supervision, there was a distributor or seller that was also a factory at Dauh Peken village having been closed in 2018 following up on the finding of the BPOM and related to permits.

“If I’m not mistaken, until now it doesn’t produce any longer,” he said.

Sniffer dogs, bomb experts comb through Kenya attack site

Kenyan security forces on Thursday resumed their search of the hotel complex attacked by Islamists with sniffer dogs and bomb experts, as information emerged about one of the attackers who killed 21 people.

A police source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said they were confident there were no more people trapped inside the hotel or surrounding office buildings after the 20-hour operation in which some 700 civilians were rescued.

“We are confident that we have no more people there,” the officer told AFP, “but in a situation like this, you are not done until you are done.”

“We are back in with sniffer dogs and bomb experts are checking through because yesterday we found grenades left by those people.” Police warned the public there may be loud controlled explosions as they continued their sweep of the hotel.

British Prime Minister Theresa May faces deadlock Thursday over a new Brexit plan, after narrowly surviving a no-confidence vote sparked by the crushing defeat of her EU withdrawal deal. With the clock ticking, May has appealed to opposition leaders to meet for cross-party talks before she presents an alternative proposal to parliament on Monday.

But her opponents have set out a list of demands for cooperating -- including ruling out the possibility that Britain would leave the EU in March without any deal at all.

The embattled leader conceded the divorce terms she struck with the EU had been roundly rejected, after MPs delivered the heaviest government defeat in parliament in modern British political history on Tuesday - 432 votes to 202.

“Now MPs have made clear what they don’t want, we must all work constructively together to set out what parliament does want,” May said in a televised address to the nation on Wednesday evening, after winning a no-confidence vote triggered by the opposition Labour party.

She set out a schedule of crossparty talks that began immediately with meetings with the Scottish nationalist, Welsh nationalist and the pro-EU Liberal Democrat leaders. “We must find solutions that are negotiable and command sufficient support in this House,” she had told parliament earlier.

But opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said he would only meet May if she could “remove clearly, once and for all the prospect of the catastrophe of a no-deal Brexit”. May said she was “disappointed” by Corbyn’s decision and stressed that “our door remains open”.

On Wednesday evening her spokesman said the possibility of a “no deal” was still on the table.

WASHINGTON - Delta Air Lines can’t get eight new aircraft in the air. Roughly a million government employees and contractors aren’t being paid. Some Americans who are trying to start small businesses face delays in obtaining the required tax identification number from the IRS.

As the partial government shutdown moves through its fourth week with no end in sight, the economic blow is being felt not only by federal workers but also by business people, households and travelers across the country.

And while the hit to the overall economy so far remains slight, economist foresee real damage if the shutdown drags into February or beyond.

“Even if the shutdown is over by the end of the month, the hit to growth will be material,” Ian Shepherdson, chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, said in a research note.

Shepherdson projects that after growing for nearly 10 years, the economy might even contract in this year’s first quarter if the shutdown lasts through March. Other forecasts are less dire. Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics, thinks that if the shutdown extends that long, the economy would slow by 0.5 percentage point but would remain on solid footing.

For now, though, the shutdown is rippling through the economy in ways that are not always visible, making it hard to fully assess its consequences. Complicating the task is that much of the economic data the government normally provides — from retail sales to home construction to the nation’s gross domestic product — has been suspended because the agencies that compile it remain closed.

With national parks shut down and some travelers suffering through long security lines and in some cases partial airport closures, for example, many Americans are having to decide whether to cancel travel and vacation plans.

“It is now plainly evident that the shutdown is affecting air travel, and when that happens, damage to the overall U.S. economy will

Some companies are pointing to specific problems: Delta said Tuesday that the shutdown is costing it $25 million a month in government travel. Its CEO, Edward Bastian, said that with the Federal Aviation Administration partially closed, Delta will also likely delay the start date of eight new aircraft.

The Securities and Exchange Commission, which oversees public stock offerings, is mostly closed because of the shutdown. As a result, some companies that had been planning initial public offerings in coming months, including Uber and Lyft, are likely facing delays. Marianne Lake, chief financial officer for JPMorgan Chase, said the bank could lose out on fees from IPOs and merger and acquisition deals that would be delayed if other shuttered agencies can’t approve them.

For small companies, too, the effects are increasingly being felt.

Edward Farrer, an executive at Principal Manufacturing Corp., a manufacturer in Broadview, Illinois, said that when the shutdown took effect, his company had nearly won approval for a request to the

Commerce Department to import specialty steel from Europe free of U.S. tariffs. Commerce is among the now-closed government departments.

“We think we’d got it to the goal line and were waiting for an approval, but everything is at an impasse because of the shutdown,” Farrer said.

Principal Manufacturing uses mainly American-made steel in the parts it sells to automakers and other industrial companies. But it imports some steel from Europe that is used to make a component for auto underbodies. Last spring, it asked the Trump administration to exclude that steel from the 25 percent tariffs the White House imposed on steel imports. Commerce was considering the request as part of a process the administration had established for companies that say they can’t obtain the steel they import from elsewhere.

For now, Farrer says Principal is paying the tariffs, which typically cost the company tens of thousands of dollars a month. It wants to keep doing the work, so it is eating the cost, Farrer said. “But we can’t do it forever.”

Neil Bradley, chief policy officer at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce,

said the chamber has heard from members that have been unable to obtain an employer identification number from the IRS. That number is needed to open bank accounts and file tax returns.

Eric Smith, an IRS spokesman, said most U.S.-based businesses can obtain the numbers online, but paper applications aren’t being processed. The most hard-hit by the shutdown, of course, are government workers themselves, who missed their first paychecks Friday, and contractors that work closely with the government. Many have had to cut back on purchases, lowering overall consumer spending.

Among them is Pearl Fraley of Greenville, North Carolina, a consumer safety inspector for the food safety inspection service. Fraley, 53, helps ensure the safety of the nation’s food supply by monitoring slaughter processing plants. It’s a job she’s held for over 15 years.

Fraley’s job, which she’s held for over 15 years, is deemed essential, so she’s had to go to work even though she isn’t being paid.

She and her co-workers were told in an email that if they work 40 hours, they aren’t eligible for unemployment benefits under North

Carolina rules — even though they’re receiving no pay.

Fraley said she feels like “an indentured servant” and said her stress level is “over the top.”

“I can’t pay my rent,” she said.

“I can’t pay my car payment or insurance. I have money for gas to go to work and for food.”

For now, her 25-year-old daughter is contributing some of the money she earns from working at McDonald’s.

“McDonald’s doesn’t typically pay enough for someone to actually live on,” Fraley noted.

Zandi said the shutdown could inflict longer-term damage on the government — and ultimately on the economy — in ways that might not be obvious. He noted, for example, that some demoralized federal employees, particularly those with vital skills in such areas as cybersecurity, might quit for jobs in the private sector. Federal agencies may also have a harder time recruiting young workers.

“Government workers have options,” Zandi said, particularly with unemployment low and many employers desperate to fill jobs.

Local temple priest, I Wayan Tagil Kumara Nata, explained the tradition begins with a ceremony at Puseh Temple and continues at Bale Agung Temple. At Puseh Temple the sanctified effigies face east or towards the shrines, aiming at coming before the deities to invoke divine power.

In addition, said Tagil Kumara Nata, the ngelawang procession is also carried out as a form of repelling negative things or neutralizing the negative influences of the universe. “This tradition is to ask for salvation, especially for natural harmony,” he said.

After the procession at Puseh Temple, all the sanctified effigies are accompanied by residents heading for the Bale Agung Temple and continued by dropping in at each temple of the customary village passed through. Due to long distance, not infrequently this procession can last until midnight. “To go back to each customary village, they take a long time to late night,” he said.

Nevertheless, it does not dampen vivacity of the people. The tradition held on the day after Galungan is still running every six months. Ear cleaners, roadside clerks: antiquated jobs thrive in Yangon

Ear cleaners, roadside plumbers and typewriters for hire: just a sample of the antiquated jobs found on the pavements of Yangon’s Pansodan Street, where old-world businesses still find customers. For years, tourists have been fascinated by odd trades in Yangon, from cycle trishaws swerving through traffic to roadside clerks going clickety-clack on typewriters.

Some professions have be-

come victims of the political and economic reforms that started in earnest in 2011. Iced water sellers melted away as improved power supplies made fridges viable; bus conductors lost out in the revamp of the city’s transportation network; and landline phone stalls are a relic in the mobile era.

But Pansodan, the beating heart of Myanmar’s biggest city, remains home to obscure professions and

evokes nostalgia among those who have plied their trade for decades along the potholed pavements below ageing colonial architecture.

“This is the street for the books, for the writers, for the poets. Everyone comes, everyone learns here,” Aung Soe Min, a long-time gallery owner on Pansodan, tells AFP. “Everything you need to know, you can come to Pansodan.”

Yangon’s growth -- statistics show the population has nearly doubled since 1983 to reach 7.3 million -- has left city services struggling to catch up. The annual monsoon season clogs decadesold plumbing networks and that is when Min Aung is busiest.

Sitting among plungers, pipes and a spare toilet lid serving as an advertisement for his services, the 58-year-old is a veteran of Yangon’s small army of streetside plumbers who still find work in the rapidly modernising commercial capital.

Close by is Khin Ohn Myint, 47, who provides quick manicures, fixes ingrown toenails and syringes ears to remove wax build-up. “I didn’t have money to invest in other businesses, so I did this for a living,” she says, smiling. Earning around $10 a day, she has put her children through university so they can pursue other careers.

She says she enjoys helping relieve people’s suffering and has even had to remove the occasional cockroach from a customer’s ear.

“Pansodan is a historic street for us,” she says as she digs out a piece of dirt from under a customer’s toenail.

The riots happened right before my eyes.” Aung Min was trained to use a typewriter in the military. But he retired in 1980 and the 72-year-old has been working on Pansodan ever since. “Computers were not so popular in the old days, so people had to rely on typewriters,” he said.

Based outside the High Court, Aung Min specialises in legal documents, from marriage certificates to notarised letters. Although living costs have increased in the intervening years, he struggles to make more than 5,000 kyat ($3) a day -- a sign that Myanmar’s transition is passing some people by.

He intends to keep working until he is 80 at least. “There were two or three typewriters on this street; we had our own customers,” he said.

Jokowi challenger moots tax cuts to stimulate economy

INDONESIAN presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto is proposing deep tax cuts to stimulate South-east Asia’s largest economy, copying the playbook successfully used by US President Donald Trump.

Mr Subianto and his running mate Sandiaga Uno will lower company and individual taxes by between 5 and 8 percentage points over five years, as well as widen the tax-togross domestic product ratio to at least 16 per cent from about 11 per cent, according to Anthony Budiawan, an economist advising the pair’s campaign.

Lower taxes will lead to greater compliance and allow the government to cut its borrowings to fund its budget, he said. The economy has taken centre-stage in Indonesia’s presidential election campaign, with Mr Subianto targeting incumbent Joko Widodo’s policy of adding to record government debt to finance building roads, ports and dams worth billions of dollars.

The swelling of government debt and its high foreign ownership were factors in a market sell-off last year, which saw the rupiah tumble to levels not seen since the 1997-98 Asian financial crisis.

“Our corporate tax is one of the most expensive in the region,” Rizal Ramli, a former finance minister, told reporters in Jakarta last Friday. ‘’Lower tax rates will make Indonesia more competitive.”

Indonesia now has a top personal income tax rate of 30 per cent and a corporate tax rate of 25 per cent.

Mr Subianto, who’s popularly known as Prabowo, is taking on Widodo - more widely known as Jokowi - in a rematch of the 2014 election, which he narrowly lost to the former furniture businessman and the first non-elite to occupy the presidential office.

The former general has picked Mr Uno, a business-savvy former private equity investor, and has blamed the high public debt and slump in the currency as examples of Mr Widodo’s mismanagement of the economy.

If elected, Mr Prabowo will also introduce a progressive individual tax rate, with the rich paying more to ensure a more equitable society, Mr Budiawan said.

A cut of between 5 and 8 percentage points in corporate tax can boost economic growth by as much as 0.7 percentage point a year in the short term and deliver a 1 percentage point increase in the tax-to GDP-ratio, said Harryadin Mahardika, a member of the pair’s economic team.

While Mr Widodo’s government has failed to increase the tax ratio despite introducing an amnesty plan while it contin-

ued to rely on revenue from commodities and debt to finance the budget, a Prabowo administration will overhaul the tax bureaucracy to make it more efficient, Mr Mahardika said.

“Everyone understands the capability of Prabowo and Sandi. They are entrepreneurs and know what they are doing,” he said. “The current administration gives false hope.

We won’t do that. We can make Indonesia great again as Prabowo said.”

Mr Widodo, who came into office promising to deliver annual growth of 7 percent, is set to miss the target by a wide margin as the economy has expanded at about 5 per cent during his tenure.

But the incumbent enjoys a lead of 20 percentage points in opinion polls over Mr Prabowo after he created millions of new jobs and spent billions of dollars to add roads, ports

and airports to cut logistic costs in the archipelago.

The incumbent, who’s paired with Ma’ruf Amin, a conservative Muslim cleric, will focus on fiscal and structural reform and development of manufacturing and export-oriented industries to create more jobs, according to Mr Widodo’s election manifesto.

The Prabowo-Uno combination will also involve more private sector participation and end the dominance of stateowned enterprises in projects and opt for more multilateral free-trade agreements than bilateral pacts.

The pair’s agenda also includes more protection for certain local industries like Mr Trump has done. Mr Mahardika said Mr Uno will act as an economic ambassador travelling the world to further Indonesia’s trade and economic interests. (ant)

Jokowi is splurging on infrastructure

LIKE many politicians, President Joko Widodo of Indonesia (known as Jokowi) enjoys being seen in a hard hat. On April 23rd he tweeted a photo of himself resplendent in a gleaming white one to his 10m followers while visiting the site of a future airport in Central Java. The previous week he posted several photos

of his trip to another airport being built, this time in West Java, complete with a hat and an orange construction vest.

More surprisingly for a head of state, many responses to these tweets have been broadly positive. The overwhelming impression among Indonesians is that their president gets shovels into

the ground, as well as inspecting their use before cameras.

After years of relative neglect, the amount Indonesia spends on roads, railways, energy plants and the like has surged. Jokowi’s predecessors promised much but delivered little. But after he took office in 2014, Jokowi took advantage of a fall in the oil price

to put a cap on an expensive fuel subsidy provided by the government. This gave him more fiscal leeway to splurge on infrastructure projects.

In that year 178trn Indonesian rupiah ($15bn) were allocated to infrastructure in the state budget. By 2017 the amount earmarked was more than double

that. Jokowi’s government has plans for 222 “national strategic projects” involving roads, railways, bridges, power stations and much else. Of these, 127 are under construction and over 20 have been completed. This year’s budget calls for 856km of new roads to be built across the archipelago. (ant)

Mousa Dembele set to join China’s Guangzhou R&F

Tottenham Hotspurs Belgian international midfielder Mousa Dembele is poised to seal a move to Guangzhou R&F, a source at the Chinese club told AFP on Thursday. The 31-year-old will cost about 12 million euros and he is set to become the latest big-name star to join the Chinese Super League (CSL).

Dembele is regarded as one of the finest midfielders in the English Premier League when fit, but his appearances have become increasingly limited because of injury.

His move to R&F, whose coach is the former Yugoslav great Dragan Stojkovic, could be officially announced as soon as Thursday, the

club source said on condition of anonymity.

Dembele, who has more than 80 caps for Belgium, joined Tottenham in 2012 from Fulham and in his pomp was a dynamic fulcrum in their midfield. He started his career in his native Belgium before moves to Willem II and AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands. It was there that the midfielder caught the eye of Fulham’s scouts and he spent two years at Craven Cottage.

Ear cleaners, roadside clerks: antiquated jobs thrive in Yangon

Ear cleaners, roadside plumbers and typewriters for hire: just a sample of the antiquated jobs found on the pavements of Yangon’s Pansodan Street, where old-world businesses still find customers. For years, tourists have been fascinated by odd trades in Yangon, from cycle trishaws swerving through traffic to roadside clerks going clickety-clack on typewriters.

Some professions have be-

come victims of the political and economic reforms that started in earnest in 2011. Iced water sellers melted away as improved power supplies made fridges viable; bus conductors lost out in the revamp of the city’s transportation network; and landline phone stalls are a relic in the mobile era.

But Pansodan, the beating heart of Myanmar’s biggest city, remains home to obscure professions and

evokes nostalgia among those who have plied their trade for decades along the potholed pavements below ageing colonial architecture.

“This is the street for the books, for the writers, for the poets. Everyone comes, everyone learns here,” Aung Soe Min, a long-time gallery owner on Pansodan, tells AFP. “Everything you need to know, you can come to Pansodan.”

called Phayre Street, the downtown artery runs south from the train station to the river, where traders arrive by morning ferry.

Yangon’s growth -- statistics show the population has nearly doubled since 1983 to reach 7.3 million -- has left city services struggling to catch up. The annual monsoon season clogs decadesold plumbing networks and that is when Min Aung is busiest.

Sitting among plungers, pipes and a spare toilet lid serving as an advertisement for his services, the 58-year-old is a veteran of Yangon’s small army of streetside plumbers who still find work in the rapidly modernising commercial capital.

“As long as there are toilets, there is work for us,” Min Aung tells AFP, puffing a cheroot as morning traffic whooshes by.

Close by is Khin Ohn Myint, 47, who provides quick manicures, fixes ingrown toenails and syringes ears to remove wax build-up. “I didn’t have money to invest in other businesses, so I did this for a living,” she says, smiling. Earning around $10 a day, she has put her children through university so they can pursue other careers.

She says she enjoys helping relieve people’s suffering and has even had to remove the occasional cockroach from a customer’s ear.

“Pansodan is a historic street for us,” she says as she digs out a piece of dirt from under a customer’s toenail.

The establishment of this joint team was a concrete response to the recommendation of the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) team for monitoring the legal process to National Police Chief General Tito Karnavian and President Widodo.

The anti-graft body`s commissioners expressed hope that the joint team, recently set up by the national police for handling the case of acid attack on Baswedan, would be able to uncover those responsible for the assault.

The cases of acid attack on Baswedan and recent bomb terror incidents targeting the two KPK commissioners have sparked deep concerns among community members.

Several representatives of the alumni of Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology`s (ITS`) Civil Engineering Department, for instance, came to the KPK office in Jakarta on Wednesday to voice their support for the KPK`s mission.

The ITS alumni condemned the perpetrators of the recent bomb threats at the two KPK commissioners` houses, urging the national police chief to arrest those responsible and send them to trial.

The riots happened right before my eyes.” Aung Min was trained to use a typewriter in the military. But he retired in 1980 and the 72-year-old has been working on Pansodan ever since. “Computers were not so popular in the old days, so people had to rely on typewriters,” he said.

Based outside the High Court, Aung Min specialises in legal documents, from marriage certificates to notarised letters. Although living costs have increased in the intervening years, he struggles to make more than 5,000 kyat ($3) a day -- a sign that Myanmar’s transition is passing some people by.

He intends to keep working until he is 80 at least. “There were two or three typewriters on this street; we had our own customers,” he said.

Jokowi challenger moots tax cuts to stimulate economy

INDONESIAN presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto is proposing deep tax cuts to stimulate South-east Asia’s largest economy, copying the playbook successfully used by US President Donald Trump.

Mr Subianto and his running mate Sandiaga Uno will lower company and individual taxes by between 5 and 8 percentage points over five years, as well as widen the tax-togross domestic product ratio to at least 16 per cent from about 11 per cent, according to Anthony Budiawan, an economist advising the pair’s campaign.

Lower taxes will lead to greater compliance and allow the government to cut its borrowings to fund its budget, he said. The economy has taken centre-stage in Indonesia’s presidential election campaign, with Mr Subianto targeting incumbent Joko Widodo’s policy of adding to record government debt to finance building roads, ports and dams worth billions of dollars.

The swelling of government debt and its high foreign ownership were factors in a market sell-off last year, which saw the rupiah tumble to levels not seen since the 1997-98 Asian financial crisis.

“Our corporate tax is one of the most expensive in the region,” Rizal Ramli, a former finance minister, told reporters in Jakarta last Friday. ‘’Lower tax rates will make Indonesia more competitive.”

Indonesia now has a top personal income tax rate of 30 per cent and a corporate tax rate of 25 per cent.

Mr Subianto, who’s popularly known as Prabowo, is taking on Widodo - more widely known as Jokowi - in a rematch of the 2014 election, which he narrowly lost to the former furniture businessman and the first non-elite to occupy the presidential office.

The former general has picked Mr Uno, a business-savvy former private equity investor, and has blamed the high public debt and slump in the currency as examples of Mr Widodo’s mismanagement of the economy.

If elected, Mr Prabowo will also introduce a progressive individual tax rate, with the rich paying more to ensure a more equitable society, Mr Budiawan said.

A cut of between 5 and 8 percentage points in corporate tax can boost economic growth by as much as 0.7 percentage point a year in the short term and deliver a 1 percentage point increase in the tax-to GDP-ratio, said Harryadin Mahardika, a member of the pair’s economic team.

While Mr Widodo’s government has failed to increase the tax ratio despite introducing an amnesty plan while it contin-

ued to rely on revenue from commodities and debt to finance the budget, a Prabowo administration will overhaul the tax bureaucracy to make it more efficient, Mr Mahardika said.

“Everyone understands the capability of Prabowo and Sandi. They are entrepreneurs and know what they are doing,” he said. “The current administration gives false hope.

We won’t do that. We can make Indonesia great again as Prabowo said.”

Mr Widodo, who came into office promising to deliver annual growth of 7 percent, is set to miss the target by a wide margin as the economy has expanded at about 5 per cent during his tenure.

But the incumbent enjoys a lead of 20 percentage points in opinion polls over Mr Prabowo after he created millions of new jobs and spent billions of dollars to add roads, ports

and airports to cut logistic costs in the archipelago.

The incumbent, who’s paired with Ma’ruf Amin, a conservative Muslim cleric, will focus on fiscal and structural reform and development of manufacturing and export-oriented industries to create more jobs, according to Mr Widodo’s election manifesto.

The Prabowo-Uno combination will also involve more private sector participation and end the dominance of stateowned enterprises in projects and opt for more multilateral free-trade agreements than bilateral pacts.

The pair’s agenda also includes more protection for certain local industries like Mr Trump has done. Mr Mahardika said Mr Uno will act as an economic ambassador travelling the world to further Indonesia’s trade and economic interests. (ant)

Jokowi is splurging on infrastructure

LIKE many politicians, President Joko Widodo of Indonesia (known as Jokowi) enjoys being seen in a hard hat. On April 23rd he tweeted a photo of himself resplendent in a gleaming white one to his 10m followers while visiting the site of a future airport in Central Java. The previous week he posted several photos

of his trip to another airport being built, this time in West Java, complete with a hat and an orange construction vest.

More surprisingly for a head of state, many responses to these tweets have been broadly positive. The overwhelming impression among Indonesians is that their president gets shovels into

the ground, as well as inspecting their use before cameras.

After years of relative neglect, the amount Indonesia spends on roads, railways, energy plants and the like has surged. Jokowi’s predecessors promised much but delivered little. But after he took office in 2014, Jokowi took advantage of a fall in the oil price

to put a cap on an expensive fuel subsidy provided by the government. This gave him more fiscal leeway to splurge on infrastructure projects.

In that year 178trn Indonesian rupiah ($15bn) were allocated to infrastructure in the state budget. By 2017 the amount earmarked was more than double

that. Jokowi’s government has plans for 222 “national strategic projects” involving roads, railways, bridges, power stations and much else. Of these, 127 are under construction and over 20 have been completed. This year’s budget calls for 856km of new roads to be built across the archipelago. (ant)

WASHINGTON - Delta Air Lines can’t get eight new aircraft in the air. Roughly a million government employees and contractors aren’t being paid. Some Americans who are trying to start small businesses face delays in obtaining the required tax identification number from the IRS.

As the partial government shutdown moves through its fourth week with no end in sight, the economic blow is being felt not only by federal workers but also by business people, households and travelers across the country.

And while the hit to the overall economy so far remains slight, economist foresee real damage if the shutdown drags into February or beyond.

“Even if the shutdown is over by the end of the month, the hit to growth will be material,” Ian Shepherdson, chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, said in a research note.

Shepherdson projects that after growing for nearly 10 years, the economy might even contract in this year’s first quarter if the shutdown lasts through March. Other forecasts are less dire. Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics, thinks that if the shutdown extends that long, the economy would slow by 0.5 percentage point but would remain on solid footing.

For now, though, the shutdown is rippling through the economy in ways that are not always visible, making it hard to fully assess its consequences. Complicating the task is that much of the economic data the government normally provides — from retail sales to home construction to the nation’s gross domestic product — has been suspended because the agencies that compile it remain closed.

With national parks shut down and some travelers suffering through long security lines and in some cases partial airport closures, for example, many Americans are having to decide whether to cancel travel and vacation plans.

Some companies are pointing to specific problems: Delta said Tuesday that the shutdown is costing it $25 million a month in government travel. Its CEO, Edward Bastian, said that with the Federal Aviation Administration partially closed, Delta will also likely delay the start date of eight new aircraft.

The Securities and Exchange Commission, which oversees public stock offerings, is mostly closed because of the shutdown. As a result, some companies that had been planning initial public offerings in coming months, including Uber and Lyft, are likely facing delays. Marianne Lake, chief financial officer for JPMorgan Chase, said the bank could lose out on fees from IPOs and merger and acquisition deals that would be delayed if other shuttered agencies can’t approve them.

For small companies, too, the effects are increasingly being felt.

Edward Farrer, an executive at Principal Manufacturing Corp., a manufacturer in Broadview, Illinois, said that when the shutdown took effect, his company had nearly won approval for a request to the

Commerce Department to import specialty steel from Europe free of U.S. tariffs. Commerce is among the now-closed government departments.

“We think we’d got it to the goal line and were waiting for an approval, but everything is at an impasse because of the shutdown,” Farrer said.

Principal Manufacturing uses mainly American-made steel in the parts it sells to automakers and other industrial companies. But it imports some steel from Europe that is used to make a component for auto underbodies. Last spring, it asked the Trump administration to exclude that steel from the 25 percent tariffs the White House imposed on steel imports. Commerce was considering the request as part of a process the administration had established for companies that say they can’t obtain the steel they import from elsewhere.

For now, Farrer says Principal is paying the tariffs, which typically cost the company tens of thousands of dollars a month. It wants to keep doing the work, so it is eating the cost, Farrer said. “But we can’t do it forever.”

Neil Bradley, chief policy officer at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce,

said the chamber has heard from members that have been unable to obtain an employer identification number from the IRS. That number is needed to open bank accounts and file tax returns.

Eric Smith, an IRS spokesman, said most U.S.-based businesses can obtain the numbers online, but paper applications aren’t being processed. The most hard-hit by the shutdown, of course, are government workers themselves, who missed their first paychecks Friday, and contractors that work closely with the government. Many have had to cut back on purchases, lowering overall consumer spending.

Among them is Pearl Fraley of Greenville, North Carolina, a consumer safety inspector for the food safety inspection service. Fraley, 53, helps ensure the safety of the nation’s food supply by monitoring slaughter processing plants. It’s a job she’s held for over 15 years.

Fraley’s job, which she’s held for over 15 years, is deemed essential, so she’s had to go to work even though she isn’t being paid.

She and her co-workers were told in an email that if they work 40 hours, they aren’t eligible for unemployment benefits under North

Carolina rules — even though they’re receiving no pay.

Fraley said she feels like “an indentured servant” and said her stress level is “over the top.”

“I can’t pay my rent,” she said.

“I can’t pay my car payment or insurance. I have money for gas to go to work and for food.”

For now, her 25-year-old daughter is contributing some of the money she earns from working at McDonald’s.

“McDonald’s doesn’t typically pay enough for someone to actually live on,” Fraley noted.

Zandi said the shutdown could inflict longer-term damage on the government — and ultimately on the economy — in ways that might not be obvious. He noted, for example, that some demoralized federal employees, particularly those with vital skills in such areas as cybersecurity, might quit for jobs in the private sector. Federal agencies may also have a harder time recruiting young workers.

“Government workers have options,” Zandi said, particularly with unemployment low and many employers desperate to fill jobs.

Implementation of the Ngelawang tradition also known as ngelungang was followed by thousands of residents, concentrated at Puakan village. Ngelawang at this village is carried out every six months by walking from one village to another, almost followed by the entire customary villagers located in the northern territory of Ubud. Centered at this village, all the sanctified effigies or tapakan Ida Bhatara comprising Barong and Rangda are given special ceremonies in two locations, namely the Puseh and Bale Agung temple of the customary village.

Local temple priest, I Wayan Tagil Kumara Nata, explained the tradition begins with a ceremony at Puseh Temple and continues at Bale Agung Temple. At Puseh Temple the sanctified effigies face east or towards the shrines, aiming at coming before the deities to invoke divine power.

In addition, said Tagil Kumara Nata, the ngelawang procession is also carried out as a form of repelling negative things or neutralizing the negative influences of the universe. “This tradition is to ask for salvation, especially for natural harmony,” he said.

After the procession at Puseh Temple, all the sanctified effigies are accompanied by residents heading for the Bale Agung Temple and continued by dropping in at each temple of the customary village passed through. Due to long distance, not infrequently this procession can last until midnight. “To go back to each customary village, they take a long time to late night,” he said.

Nevertheless, it does not dampen vivacity of the people. The tradition held on the day after Galungan is still running every six months. Tabanan has six liquor industries

Total production reaches 28.6m liters a year

TABANAN - As a whole, Tabanan currently has six alcoholic beverage industries and has absorbed 259 workers. From the data of the Tabanan Industry and Trade Agency, one industry is located in Kerambitan sub-district, two in East Selemadeg, one in Tabanan and two others in Kediri. The industries produce liquor of group B and C with basic ingredients of rice and fruit fermentation. For a year, their total production reaches 28.6 million liters.

are fermented rice and fruits. The industrial licenses for processing the production is indeed issued by central government. “The six liquor industries are entirely legal and have owned their license,” he explained.

Though they had been granted an industrial permit from the central government valid for a year, the liquor industry is also required to have permit of business premises and trade business permit issued by the Tabanan Integrated Licensing Office, considering the location of production is in the region of Tabanan district. “Every six months, they (industry players—Ed) are also required to submit production reports to the province and district as a form of supervision so that pro-

duction capacity does not exceed the maximum limit having been permitted by central government,” he explained.

He said that since this is an industry with a large capacity, the guidance becomes the authority of the province, while the district government is only tasked to conduct supervision. Regarding the sales target of the liquor industry in Tabanan, according to Gusti Ayu Wiryati, each industry has its own market. But most of the products are marketed to restaurants, hotels and some of them are marketed to large supermarkets.

Meanwhile, regarding revenue of the alcoholic beverages, the Trade Division Head at the Tabanan Industry and Trade Agency, Prima-

yani, stated that based on Perda No. 2/2016 concerning alcoholic beverages, the agency only regulates sales supervision issues, and does not regulate the levy issues. “Alcoholic drinks have been subject to excise from the central government. Local authority just issues the business permit and oversees circulation,” she said.

Primayani continued that from the results of the last supervision, there was a distributor or seller that was also a factory at Dauh Peken village having been closed in 2018 following up on the finding of the BPOM and related to permits.

“If I’m not mistaken, until now it doesn’t produce any longer,” he said.

British Prime Minister Theresa May faces deadlock Thursday over a new Brexit plan, after narrowly surviving a no-confidence vote sparked by the crushing defeat of her EU withdrawal deal. With the clock ticking, May has appealed to opposition leaders to meet for cross-party talks before she presents an alternative proposal to parliament on Monday.

But her opponents have set out a list of demands for cooperating -- including ruling out the possibility that Britain would leave the EU in March without any deal at all.

The embattled leader conceded the divorce terms she struck with the EU had been roundly rejected, after MPs delivered the heaviest government defeat in parliament in modern British political history on Tuesday - 432 votes to 202.

“Now MPs have made clear what they don’t want, we must all work constructively together to set out what parliament does want,” May said in a televised address to the nation on Wednesday evening, after winning a no-confidence vote triggered by the opposition Labour party.

She set out a schedule of crossparty talks that began immediately with meetings with the Scottish nationalist, Welsh nationalist and the pro-EU Liberal Democrat leaders. “We must find solutions that are negotiable and command sufficient support in this House,” she had told parliament earlier.

But opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said he would only meet May if she could “remove clearly, once and for all the prospect of the catastrophe of a no-deal Brexit”. May said she was “disappointed” by Corbyn’s decision and stressed that “our door remains open”.

On Wednesday evening her spokesman said the possibility of a “no deal” was still on the table.

MANGUPURA - River flows under the Umalas Kangin Bridge, Kerobokan, North Kuta, is full of garbage. The piles of garbage with the height reaching the bridge edge blocked the flows of the Yeh Poh River.

DENPASAR - In 2018, the Bali provincial government targeted foreign tourist arrivals of around 6.3 million people, but could only be realized around 6.1 million people. This happened due to several factors such as the eruption of Mount Agung, the earthquakes in Lombok, and several other disasters in the country. Besides, it was also caused by the decline in foreign tourists visit from China due to the case of travel from China selling cheap packages, so that Bali provincial government supported by stakeholders and Chinese government took decisive action to quickly stop the practice of such cheap packages.

BANGLI - Bangli district government will immediately deploy two units of heavy equipment to deal with landslides at Cemara Landung hamlet, Terunyan, Kintamani. In addition to dredging materials stockpiling the road, the district government will also dredge and normalize waterways from the hills towards the lake getting amassed by materials. The plan was conveyed by the Head of the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of Bangli, I Wayan Karmawan, when contacted on Tuesday (Jan. 15).

He explained that from the results of review, it was found the overflow of landslide materials reached several people’s houses and fields because the condition of waterways from the hill top to the lake experiencing siltation.

Responding to this condition, the regent already ordered the team to immediately bring down the heavy equipment to the location as an emergency measure. Tourism players complain about roaming cattle at Gilimanuk Bay

Thematic Lesser Sunda Museum unequipped with books and films

SINGARAJA - After being officially opened recently, completeness of the Soenda Ketjil or Lesser Sunda thematic museum in the exharbor area of Buleleng leaves a problem. As evidence, the museum taking advantage of the Dutch heritage building until the beginning of this year has not been equipped with history books and films telling about the history and other documents related to Buleleng as the capital of Lesser Sunda covering Bali, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

The Wisata Tirta community group leader, Agung Alit Wirawan, stated on Wednesday (Jan. 16) the cows frequently appear and roam around the Gilimanuk Bay area. It is very disturbing to visitors and they also savor the existing plants while their dungs pollute the area there.

He said the cows roaming around for food belong to local community.

After the village authority issued a circular, the residents raising cattle or goats are expected to keep theirs in a cage so as not to roam around the settlements, public places and tourist objects.

He hoped the cattle owners could understand and be aware so that they will hold their cattle so that do not interfere with tourism objects having been arranged and developed for the benefit of the Gilimanuk community.

Zona Bahari community group leader, Selamet Jaryanto, also complained about the frequent occurrence of cattle roaming around the Gilimanuk Bay tourist attraction. The

released cattle roaming for food can surely disturb the comfort of visitors enjoying the tourist attractions.

In order not to disturb the tourist objects and for the convenience of visitors, Selamet hoped that relevant parties can find a solution so that tourist objects are not disturbed, while the cattle owners can also keep theirs properly.

Meanwhile, Head of the Jembrana Tourism and Culture Agency, I Nengah Alit, said that currently visitors to Gilimanuk Bay have begun to be crowded. However, the development remains to face many obstacles such as people that are not aware if the development of tourism objects is for them as well.

According to him, the tourist attraction must be clean, beautiful, comfortable as well as safe. The existence of cattle that frequently roam around is indeed very disturbing.

His service asked the owners of the cattle and other livestock to realize and help the efforts develop tourist objects in Gilimanuk. The cattle should be keep in their cage so as not to disturb the beauty and comfort there.

Tourism players hoped the village authority and local leaders to provide an understanding for the cattle owners and make approaches so as not to harm or disrupt tourism development. (120)

TABANAN - Residents of the Gunung Sari hamlet, Jatiluwih, Penebel subdistrict, were shocked by the death of resident from the Philippines, Grace Tarjoto, 62, in the bedroom of her house on Wednesday (Jan. 16).

The cause of the victim’s death is not yet known because from the results of external examinations, there is no indication of violence found nor having a history of illness.

As information compiled from police station, Grace, a resident from the Philippines, but has become an Indonesian citizen, was first discovered to have been no longer breathing by her workers, Zero Ardiansyah and Ni Nyoman Pujiasih. According to witnesses, since Tuesday (Jan. 15), the victim did not leave the room, but it is considered normal. Moreover, on Monday Grace had time to go out and worked with her workers. But until Wednesday morning, Grace did not leave the room. Finally, Zero and Pujiasih decided to wake her up, but there was no response. When contacted through mobile phone, Grace did not pick up.

Feeling suspicious, the two wit-

nesses decided to report the case to Penebel Police Station. After the inspection by opening the door of her room, police found Grace in a lifeless condition. She was found in a position remaining in a state of sleeping complete with a blanket.

Chief of Penebel Police, I Ketut Mastra Budaya, said the cause of Grace’s death is unknown. When the members did crime scene investigation and external examination, there were no any indications of violence found even suspicious objects. Additionally, the victim did not have a history of illness. “However, from the information of her workers, Grace is a heavy smoker,” he said. Furthermore, Grace’s body was taken to the Tabanan Hospital while waiting for her family from Jakarta.

Chief Mastra added that Grace had been an Indonesian citizen because since 1993 she had settled at Jatiluwih village, Penebel. Every day she operates her red rice milling machine and has a bike rental services. “Possibly her body will be cremated because it has become a resident of Jatiluwih village,” he explained. (kmb28)

The Rainforest Pavilion also promotes musical talents from Indonesia and Southeast Asia at large festivals to increase their audience and showcase national talents. The goal of the Rainforest Pavilion is to save five million hectares of rainforest whilst also make saving the rainforests fun and sexy. Rainforest Pavilion supports a variety of Rainforest initiatives: Cuipo, Rainforest Trust, and Vivid Kalimantan. This year’s Rainforest Pavilion at Wonderfruit raised enough funds to support the conservation of 404 hectares of forest in Kalimantan.

LOS ANGELES - Rihanna is suing her father over his use of their last name for a business.

In the lawsuit filed Tuesday in federal court in Los Angeles, Rihanna, whose full name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty, says that her father, Ronald Fenty, and his partner have violated her trademark and falsely suggested that their business, Fenty Entertainment, is affiliated with her.

The 30-year-old singer says in the lawsuit that she has used the name for her cosmetics brand and other businesses since 2012.

Fenty Entertainment, which advertises itself as a talent and production company,

was founded in 2017.

The lawsuit asks the court to order Ronald Fenty to stop using the brand name, and it seeks damages to be determined later.

An email sent to Fenty Entertainment seeking comment wasn’t immediately returned. (ap)

Jason Reitman to direct Ghostbusters sequel for summer 2020

LOS ANGELES - Ivan Reitman is passing the Ghostbusters torch to his son.

Four-time Oscar nominee Jason Reitman is set to direct a new installment in the Ghostbusters series for Sony Pictures set to come out in the summer of 2020. Reitman tweeted Tuesday night that he’s “finally got the keys to the car.”

Ivan Reitman directed and produced the original “Ghostbusters,” which came out in 1984, and its sequel in 1989.

The studio says that this new Ghostbusters will be going back to its roots and will be the next chapter in the original story. Sony attempted to reboot Ghostbusters in 2016 with gender-flipped leads, but the costly film disappointed at the box office.

Entertainment Weekly first reported the news.

Production begins this summer, but no word yet on the cast. (ap)

BOGOR - The first round of official debates of the two pairs of Indonesian presidential and vice presidential candidates kicks off on Thursday, with law, human rights, corruption, and terrorism-related issues to feature in the debate`s agenda.

This long-awaited event seems to have gained momentum since nine days before it is held, two important incidents occurred that are so relevant to the debate agenda that the pairs of Joko Widodo-Ma`ruf Amin and Prabowo Subianto-Sandiaga Uno need to respond.

The first incident is related to the bomb terror targeting two commissioners of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Agus Raharjo and Laode Muhammad Syarif, while the second one concerns the formation of a joint team to uncover the Novel Baswedan case.

The bomb threats occurred on Jan 9. Raharjo`s house was terrorized by unknown persons, who placed a bag with pipes inside, but the police investigators were unable to find any explosive materials in the bag.

On the same day, Syarif`s home was also attacked with two cocktail bombs, though the home-made bombs did not cause any damage to the house.

Raharjo lives in the Graha Indah housing complex, Jatiasih, Bekasi City, West Java Province, while Syarif resides on 42 C South Kalibata Street, Pancoran, South

Jakarta. Apart from the fact that the two KPK commissioners and their family members were unscathed by the bomb terror, these crimes have revived the public`s memory of the acid attack on Baswedan on April 11, 2017.

The assault, which occurred while Baswedan was heading home after performing Fajr, or the Dawn prayer, at a mosque near his house, had harmed his eyes, necessitating medical treatment in Jakarta and Singapore. The acid attack was reportedly launched by two motorcyclists, but they managed to escape and are still at large until

now. This retired police officer had joined the anti-graft agency in 2007 and since then had been frequently terrorized and attacked.

In 2012, his motorcycle was seriously damaged after being attacked by supporters of convicted Amran Batalipu, a former district head of Buol, in Central Sulawesi Province. In connection with the case of bomb terrors, the Jakarta Metropolitan Police have deployed six personnel to safeguard the houses of two KPK commissioners.

As revealed by the Jakarta Metropolitan Police spokesman, Sen. Coms. Argo Yuwono, on Jan 10, the policemen were assigned to safeguard the homes of KPK Chairman Raharjo and KPK Commissioner Syarif round-the-clock.

The on-duty policemen were also backed by the police mobile patrols in the two commissioners` residential areas, Yuwono remarked. Following the bomb threats on two of the anti-graft body`s commissioners on Jan 9, the National Police have also pledged to consider a discourse on giving the KPK commissioners the rights to possess weapons.
