Kim Kardashian announces birth of 3rd child, this one by surrogate LOS ANGELES - Kim Kardashian and her rapper husband Kanye West announced their third child on Tuesday, a girl born to a surrogate. “Kanye and I are happy to announce the arrival of our healthy, beautiful baby girl,” Kardashian said in a message on her app. The couple thanked the unidentified surrogate “who made our dreams come true with the greatest gift one could give.” They said the baby was born on Monday but they did not announce a name. Kardashian, 37, and West are already parents to North, 4, and Saint, 2. The “Keeping Up with the Kadashians” reality and social media star has said she decided to use a surrogate after doctors warned of serious health risks if she became pregnant again. Kardashian has given detailed accounts on her blog about the difficulties she experienced during her two labors. Two of Kardashian’s sisters are also expecting babies. Khloe Kardashian, 33, announced in December that she is six months pregnant with her basketball player boyfriend Tristan Thomas, while their half-sister Kylie Jenner, 20, is reported to be expecting her first child soon. Myanmar police shoot dead seven protesters in troubled Rakhine YANGON - Myanmar police shot dead seven demonstrators and 12 were injured in troubled Rakhine State, after a local gathering celebrating an ancient Buddhist Arakan kingdom turned violent. DUBLIN - The death in London of Cranberries lead singer Dolores O’Riordan is not being treated as suspicious, police said on Tuesday, as tributes flowed in for one of Ireland’s most successful artists. O’Riordan, 46, was found dead in a London hotel on Monday morning during a recording trip to London ahead of a planned tour, her publicist said. No cause of death has been given. London police said in a statement that a 46-year-old woman was discovered at a hotel in London’s Park Lane early on Monday and was pronounced dead at the scene. “The death is not being treated as suspicious,” the state-
ment said. O’Riordan was catapulted to fame as a shy 22-year-old in 1993 when songs from her debut album were picked up by MTV. The band, whose hits included “Linger” and “Zombie” went on to sell over 40 million records to become Ireland’s second-best-selling rock band after U2. She struggled at times with the band’s success, dropping out of a tour in 1996 citing exhaustion and disillu-

Fourth quarter of 2017, outflow of Bali declines
“I highlight the fourth quarter because there is usually an increase in the fourth quarter. Compared to the fourth quarter of 2015, the outflow was IDR 4.01 trillion, compared to 2016 the outflow was IDR 4.9 trillion and in 2017 the outflow was 4.4 trillion,” said Teguh Setiadi, Division Head of Payment

One of the causes to the decline in money circulating in the community is the increase in volcanic activities of Mount Agung since last September that affected various sectors in Bali. To fulfill the need for currency, Bank Indonesia deployed mobile cash to serve money exchanges. In 2017, BI operated mobile cash for 93 times. Mobile cash activities in 2017 decreased when compared to 2016, carried out for 113 times. It happened because BI Bali has owned deposit cash in Buleleng so it reduces its mobile cash activities in Buleleng and surrounding areas. Meanwhile, the activities of mobile cash in 2015 reached 89 times. Partner’s scent eases women’s response to stress
Stress levels dropped in women who smelled their partner’s shirt during a stress test but rose in women who smelled a stranger’s shirt, researchers found. “Many people wear their partner’s shirt or sleep on their partner’s side of the bed when their partner is away but may not realize why they engage in these behaviors,” said lead study author Marlise Hofer, a psychology graduate student at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. “A partner’s scent alone, even without their physical presence, can be a powerful tool to help reduce stress,” Hofer told Reuters Health by email. Hofer and colleagues worked with 96 couples, most in their early 20s, to complete the study. They asked the men to wear a white T-shirt for 24 hours without deodorant or scented products. Then the shirts were turned inside out, folded and placed in a sealed plastic freezer bag with the underarm section facing the opening. The women participated in the Trier Social Stress Test, which includes a mock job interview and unanticipated mental math question that causes a stress response. They were randomly assigned to smell a single shirt three times before and three times after the stress test. The shirt might have been worn by their romantic partner or a stranger, or it might have been new and unworn. The women also completed a questionnaire five times during the experiment to indicate anxiety, physical discomfort, tension, desire to leave the situation and feelings of control. Saliva samples were collected seven times during the experiment to measure levels of the stress hormone cortisol. The research team found that perceived stress changed during the experiment for most women, and
those who smelled a partner’s shirt felt less stressed both during and after the stress test than those who smelled a stranger’s or unworn shirt. The researchers were surprised to find that cortisol levels were higher after the stress test in women who smelled a stranger’s shirt. “These unanticipated findings could serve as a source of future research,” Hofer said. Cortisol levels didn’t differ between women who smelled their partner’s shirt and an unworn shirt. Dr. Donald McBurney, professor emeritus of the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, has researched olfactory comfort in close relationships. “In our studies, we received many anecdotes, including lovers who mailed worn clothing back and forth between military members and their partners back home,” McBurney, who wasn’t involved in the new study, told Reuters Health by email. “And hospitals give infants items of their mother’s clothing to sleep with.” Future research should investigate whether perceived stress and cortisol responses are the same for men and if additional factors could reduce stress for both men and women, said Dr. Sean Mackey of the Stanford University School of Medicine in Palo Alto, California. Mackey, who wasn’t involved with this study, has researched romantic relationships and experiences of pain. “Can we further manipulate this (decreased stress) response and amplify it?” he wrote in an email to Reuters Health. “How does the strength of the (romantic) relationship affect the response?” Beyond a controlled laboratory setting, researchers should also study how this works in real-world applications, he added. “During times of stress, keep those you love close to you,” Mackey said. ‘If you are going to be away during a stressful period, it may be useful to bring an article of their clothing.” (rtr)

Alan Melcher of Britain’s Institute of Cancer Research, who also co-led the study, said the results pointed a way forward for more trials using this virus, including testing whether it can harness the immune system to super-charge the effect of existing chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments. “Now we know we can get reovirus across the blood-brain barrier, we have begun clinical studies to see just how effective this viral immunotherapy can be,” he said. Immune boosting virus could be used to treat brain tumours
LONDON - A trial of a potential new brain cancer treatment has shown that a virus injected directly into the bloodstream can reach tumours deep inside the brain and switch on the body’s own defence system to attack them. The trial involved just nine patients, but scientists said that if the results could be replicated in larger studies, the naturally occurring ‘reovirus’ could be developed into an effective immunotherapy for people with aggressive brain tumours. “This is the first time it has been shown that a therapeutic virus is able to pass through the brain-blood barrier,” said Adel Samson, a medical oncologist at the University of Leeds’ Institute of Cancer and Pathology who coled the work. He said their trial had shown not only that a virus could be delivered to a tumour deep in the brain, but that when it reached its target, “it stimulated the body’s own immune defences to attack the cancer”. Published in the journal Science Translational Medicine on Wednesday, the trial involved nine patients with tumours that had either spread to the brain from other areas or were fastgrowing gliomas, an aggressive type of brain cancer. One of the evacuees from Batumadeg hamlet, Besakih, I Kadek Lanus, revealed that his family and some relatives are still in the evacuation even though many Besakih residents have returned to their respective village. He has not returned to his home village because it will be discussed first with family and relatives who are still surviving in the evacuation. “Before the danger radius is lowered, the residents from Batumadeg hamlet evacuating here (post of agriculture—Ed) amount to 99 families with 434 people. After some families returned home, Batumadeg residents remaining to survive in the evacuation are only 12 families consisting of 39 people. Indeed, we want to go home, but we must discuss first with family and relatives. After getting a decision to go home, we will go back to Besakih together so that can hold ngusaba ritual at Dalem Puri Temple,” he said. According to Lanus, other than having to discuss with family and relatives, he has not returned home due to refuge problem. Previously, there was an issue if the shelter is left home it will be occupied by other evacuees. However, after cross-checked to post coordinator, other evacuees cannot occupy the shelter built by evacuees easily. If other evacuees want to come in, they must first report to the post coordinator, hamlet chief and shelter owner. “Only after getting permission from the three elements, the new evacuees are allowed to come into the shelter. If not allowed by the owner, they cannot occupy the shelter. Indeed, the land belonged to the government, but the shelter building was founded by evacuees independently. Moreover, the bamboo was brought directly by the evacuees. To build the shelter, some evacuees even purchased bamboo directly, so it is not easy to occupy the shelters even though the evacuees have left it behind considering the condition of the Mount Agung is not yet normal because if the volcano erupts again I will return to this
post,” added the man. He was very happy to return home considering most of Besakih residents have gone home and are no longer evacuating. However, he is still haunted by worries because the activities of Mount Agung are still high and frequently erupts. “We are still haunted by fear. Another evacuee, Ni Wayan Warta, revealed that on the one hand she is very happy to be able to return home at Besakih. He has not owned any activities in the farm, since his cattle were all sold after the first eruption of Mount Agung on September 21, 2018. Fortunately, he is a local tour guide at Besakih after re-opening of Besakih Temple by the Management Agency. So, there is activity after returning home. “It is the only activity after my returning home. When getting the turn to escort guest, I will go out to work. the perpetrator came and immediately seized the victim’s iPhone 7. The victim had time to chase but lost track. “Most of the victims are foreigners so the handphone taken is expensive such as iPhone and Samsung that are currently in trend,” he said. Besides, police also arrested a pickpocket, Komang Putra Laksana, 25, at Jalan Juwet Sari, Pemogan, South Denpasar. The victim is Lisa Cecilia Remsu, 18, from Finland. Nations to consider more N.Korea sanctions, U.S. warns on military option
VANCOUVER, Jan 17 (Reuters) - Twenty nations agreed on Tuesday to consider tougher sanctions to press North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons and U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson warned Pyongyang it could trigger a military response if it did not choose negotiations. A U.S.-hosted meeting of countries that backed South Korea during the 1950-53 Korea War also vowed to support renewed dialogue between the two Koreas “in hopes that it leads to sustained easing of tensions” and agreed that a diplomatic solution to the crisis was both essential and possible. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has refused to give up development of nuclear missiles capable of hitting the United States in spite of increasingly severe U.N. sanctions, raising fears of a new war on the Korean peninsula. The United States and Canada co-hosted the day-long meeting in Vancouver to discuss ways to increase pressure on Kim. U.S. officials have reported a debate within the Trump administration over whether to give more active consideration to military options, such as a pre-emptive strike on a North Korean nuclear or missile site. Tillerson brushed off a question about such a “bloody nose” strike, telling a closing news conference: “I’m a not going to comment on issues that have yet to be decided
among the National Security Council or the president.” However, he said the threat posed by North Korea was growing. “We all need to be very sober and clear-eyed about the current situation ... We have to recognize that the threat is growing and if North Korea does not chose the pathway of engagement, discussion, negotiation, then they themselves will trigger an option,” Tillerson said. “Our approach is, in terms of having North Korea chose the correct step, is to present them with what is the best option – talks are the best option; that when they look at the military situation, that’s not a good outcome for them.” “It is time to talk, but they have to take the step to say they want to talk.” The Vancouver meeting pledged

A senior State Department official said U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis briefed the Vancouver participants over dinner on Monday and stressed the U.S. preference for a diplomatic solution, while keeping a military option on the table. “It was a chance to raise people’s confidence that we have thought through this, that we definitely prefer a diplomatic solution,” the official said. BUSINESS Warning light: Mexican car sales slump ahead of election MEXICO CITY - Car dealerships in Mexico City have kicked off the new year offering “clearance sales” and free insurance as 2017 models collect dust on their lots, a reminder that consumer nerves over high interest rates could slow the economy ahead of elections. The first drop in auto sales in eight years is the most visible sign the great Mexican shopper, the heart and soul of Latin America’s second largest economy, is feeling the pinch of inflation at a 16-1/2-year high and a battered peso. Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration said that as of September
2019, it would eliminate the temporary protected status, or TPS, that allows some 200,000 Salvadorans to live in the United States without fear of deportation. Presidential communications chief Eugenio Chicas said El Salvador was in talks to see how Salvadorans could be employed in Qatar, a wealthy country of some 2.6 million people that is scheduled to host the
soccer World Cup in 2022. “The kingdom of Qatar ... has held out the possibility of an agreement with El Salvador whereby Salvadoran workers could be brought across in phases (to Qatar),” Chicas told reporters. After an unspecified period, the Salvadorans would return home, Chicas added, without saying how many workers the program could encompass.
El Salvador’s foreign minister, Hugo Martinez, is in Qatar until Friday and said in a statement that Salvadorans could work in engineering, aircraft maintenance, construction and agriculture. Shivaratri as Sin Redemption Night, Perform Main Abstinences
Hindu community in Bali celebrates a unique Shivaratri Day. Shivaratri means the holy contemplation night or the sin redemption night. Shivaratri falls one day before new moon in the seventh month of Balinese calendar (Kapitu) and this year falls on Friday (Jan. 8). On this day, Hindu devotees in Bali do fasting and meditation to get forgiveness from God for the sins caused by avidya (darkness). On that day, the Hindu community commonly performs three types of abstinence adjusted to the capabilities. The main abstinences are monabrata (no speaking), upawasa (fasting) and jagra (guarding, keeping awake for whole night). Medium abstinence only performs the upawasa and jagra, while the small abstinence just performs jagra. Shivaratri is often called pejagran day because on that day God in his manifestation as Lord Shiva in his function as destroyer does meditation for whole night. Therefore, on this day devotees invoke to him so that all the sins could be removed. Devotees usually do pejagran at temples or shrines while reading scriptures. The Hindu palm-leaf manuscript named Lubdaka written by Mpu Tanakung carries the procession of Shivaratri with a series as follows: firstly, taking a bath in the morning, putting on clean dressing and invoking holy water. Then, begin the fasting without food and drink. It’s a mental exercise in order to get a strength and durability against thirst and hunger. At night, it is resumed with the reading of Vedic scripture while
keeping awake through the night to calm down the mind. Of course, it is commenced with the worship of God for forgiveness for the sins having been committed previously. In the Lubdaka palm-leaf manuscript is stated that though people are very guilty, even the most sinful, they still have the opportunity to destroy their sins if they sincerely celebrate and implement the abstinence of Shivaratri. In the mythology, Lubdaka is mentioned as a hunter of animals in the forest. Every day, he always kills animals. Once upon a time, he returned to the forest for hunting. Unfortunately he was unlucky on that day, so that did not get any animals. Unwittingly, it was already dusk and it was getting darker. Actually he intended to go home, but it was extremely dark so that he did not know the right way home. He decided to stay, and for fear of being ambushed by beasts he climbed a bilva tree to lean. Unwittingly, underneath there is a clear water lake with a shrine and lingam. To prevent from sleeping for fear of being attacked by animals, he eliminated his sleepiness while picking bilva leaves.

From that day, he stopped hunting and switched profession into a farmer. In keeping with the times, his health condition dropped and eventually died. It is narrated that the soul of Lubdaka was hovering in the sky, did not know where to go. After that, the Cikrabala forces took him away to be included in the Candragomuka crater in Hell. At that time, Lord Shiva came and
intercepted the Cikrabala forces. Cikrabala forces insisted on bringing the soul of Lubdaka to Hell because during his lifetime he often killed many forest animals. Lord Shiva explained that Lubdaka has made penance on the Shivaratri by staying up all night accompanied by remorse over his sins in the past. Thus, he deserved to get forgiveness and ultimately Lubdaka was taken to Shiva Loka. (kmb)

Police still baffled by discovery of 13 starved, abused siblings PERRIS - Police said on Tuesday they were still seeking answers after finding 13 siblings starving in their parents’ squalid Southern California home, some of them chained to beds under “horrific” conditions in an otherwise ordinary suburb. The grim situation was discovered on Sunday after an emaciated 17-year-old girl escaped through a window of the home in a newer subdivision of Perris, about 70 miles (113 km) east of Los Angeles, and called 911, police said.
“I wish I could come to you today with information that would explain why this happened,” said Captain Greg Fellows of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. “But we do need to acknowledge the courage of the young girl who escaped from that residence to bring attention so they could get the help they so needed.” The parents, 57-year-old David Allen Turpin and Louise Anna Turpin, 49, were arrested at their darkened, foul-smelling house after the girl’s 12 siblings were found there. The shocking case quickly prompted questions of how the victims, who ranged in age from 2 to 29 years old, could have been kept in such grim conditions without raising suspicions of neighbors or authorities. But some experts said it may have been easier for the parents to shield their children from scrutiny because they were home-schooled. “One of the things that was interesting was, he (Turpin) set up his own home school so the kids were accounted for and not really seen by anybody,” said Sherryll Kraizer, a child-abuse prevention expert and the founder of the Coalition for Children. The California Department of Education lists the Turpin address, where the family has lived since 2014, as the location of the Sandcastle
Day School, with David Turpin as principal. Six of the couple’s children are minors, while the rest are over 18, according to neighbors, meaning they are adults under the law. David and Louise Turpin were each charged with nine counts of torture and 10 counts of child endangerment. They were being held on $9 million bail, with an initial court hearing scheduled for Thursday. ‘I WOULD CALL THAT TORTURE’ Police who responded to the girl’s 911 call saw that the children were malnourished, Fellows said, calling conditions “horrific.” Even so, he said, the mother appeared perplexed about why the police were there. “If you can imagine being 17 years old and appearing to be a 10-year-old, being chained to a bed, being malnourished, and injuries associated with that,” Fellows said. “I would call that torture.” Authorities quickly began seeking court authorization to take custody of the children. The state Child Protective Services agency was assisting in an investigation. Kimberly Milligan, 50, said she only saw the infant in the mother’s arms and three other children since she moved in across the street two years ago, describing them as small and pale. “Why don’t we ever see the kids?” Milligan said she asked herself. “In hindsight, we would have never thought this. But there were red flags. You never don’t hear or see nine kids.” Two years ago, while walking around the neighborhood admiring Christmas lights, Milligan said she had encountered three of the Turpin children and complimented them on the manger with a baby Jesus set up outside the house. Hong Kong democracy leader Joshua Wong jailed a second time for 2014 protest
HONG KONG - Hong Kong democracy activist Joshua Wong, 21, was sentenced to a second jail term of three months on Wednesday for what a judge described as his “leading” role during some of the 2014 pro-democracy “Umbrella Movement” street demonstrations. Wong and 19 other demonstrators were found guilty of criminal contempt of court because they refused to obey a court injunction order to leave a protest zone in late November 2014. The protest was part of the biggest populist uprising for decades in Hong Kong and posed a spirited challenge to Beijing’s Communist Party leaders in demanding full democracy. For more than two months, tens of thousands of mostly student and young demonstrators camped out in tents on major highways, defying government, police and Chinese demands to leave. Umbrellas became a symbol of defiance after protesters used them as shields against police pepper spray and batons. High Court Judge Andrew Chan said that even though Wong only stayed in the protest area for 90 minutes on the day in question, “his involvement in obstructing the clearance operation was deep and extensive. He played a leading role on that day”. “In view of his overall involvement, I am of the view that the only appropriate punishment ... will be one of immediate imprisonment,” said Chan. Another activist, Raphael Wong, was also jailed, while the remaining protesters, including former student leader Lester Shum, received suspended sentences. “Thank you
your honour for your ruling. Our determination to fight for genuine universal suffrage will not waver,” stated Raphael Wong in the courtroom before being taken away. Lawyers for both the Wongs said they would appeal, but they were denied an immediate request for bail. Hong Kong, a former British colony, returned to Chinese rule in 1997 amid promises that the Asian financial hub would enjoy a high degree of autonomy under a socalled ‘one country, two systems’ arrangement. A perceived tightening of control by Beijing’s Communist Party leaders in recent years, however, has fuelled a groundswell of pro-democracy activism aimed at defending the city’s constitutionally enshrined freedoms. While a spirited young generation has given Hong Kong’s flagging push for democracy fresh impetus, some 100 key activists have, or could be, jailed in upcoming trials, in what critics say is an attempt to counter the movement’s momentum. US backs Indonesia in fight against illegal fishing JAKARTA - The US government has expressed its commitment to support Indonesia in its fight against the illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) Fishing, an official said in his written statement, received by ANTARA here on Tuesday. “Indonesia has launched an impressive effort to fight against IUU Fishing,” Matthew Burton, Environment Director of United States Agency for International Development (USAID), said in Jakarta on Tuesday. Burton noted that for the last three years, the Indonesian government has stepped up its efforts in capturing the illegal fishing boats. However, illegal fishing remains a common challenge that should be resolved effectively through joint action. Earlier last year, the Indonesian Maritime and Fishery Ministry and the US National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) had endorsed the Agreement on Port State Measures to Prevent, Deter and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (PSMA). The two countries also had partnered up to implement the agreement into a concrete measure. The agreement calls on the signatory states to conduct regular inspection of the fishing boats operating at all the ports, in order to prevent the IUU Fishing. The agreement is also aimed at preventing the distribution of fishes collected illegally to the ports in Indonesia as well as other signatory countries. “The partnership between Indonesia and US is intended to bring PSMA into an actual action and halt any products of IUU Fishing from entering the local and global market,” Burton remarked. Hence on Tuesday (Jan 16), USAID and the NOAA Office of Law Enforcement (OLE) initiated a workshop on PSMA, which was attended by 21 officers of the ministry`s Maritime and Fisheries Resources Monitoring Directorate General (PSDKP). “The advance workshop on PSMA is expected to raise the knowledge and the capacity of our officers at ports. We have acknowledged that the Indonesian government has ratified the agreement into the President Regulation No.43 Year 2016,” Nilanto Perbowo, an acting PSDKP director general, remarked in his opening remarks. The ministry has assigned representatives of five main ports, namely Jakarta, Bungus, Bitung, Ambon, and Sukabumi, to attend the workshop, he noted. During the eight-day training, the USAID also invited some NOAA experts to introduce the PSMA to the participants. On August 2016, a similar workshop was hosted, and the trainers launched a simulation aboard the boat on the inspection standard procedures. Enforced worldwide on June 2016, the PSMA is the firstever binding international treaty that focuses specifically on illicit fishing, the Food and Agriculture Organization of United Nations (FAO) remarked in its official website. Indonesian president replaces social affairs minister in modest reshuffle
JAKARTA - Indonesian President Joko Widodo replaced the social affairs minister in his Cabinet on Wednesday and picked a new chief of staff in the third reshuffle of his five-year term. The reshuffle was widely expected because some of Widodo’s ministers have requested leaves of absence to stand in regional elections later this year. However, with only one minister involved, it was
more modest than some expectations. The new social affairs minister is Idrus Marham, a member of Golkar, the second-largest party in Widodo’s coalition. He replaces Khofifah Indar Parawansa, who is standing for election in East Java province. Widodo also appointed a new chief of staff, Moeldoko, a retired military chief who uses only one name like many Indonesians. Legislative and presidential elections will be held in 2019. (rtr)

It is often visited by Hindus pilgrims around the Pejukutan and Tanglad village, especially on special holidays. To the west of the Atuh Temple there are two springs, one of which is considred sacred and is only used for ceremonial purposes. The other spring is used by surrounding communities for various purposes. According to local stories, the two springs emmerged
during the dry season. A dove was seen drinking under a coconut tree and upon further investigation, the springs were found. Uniquely, both springs that are located adjacent to the beach, have tasteless water and never run dry – even in the dry season. Thus, local residents named the beach ‘Atuh Beach.’ In Balinese, the word /atuh/ is derived from two stems namely ‘a’ (not) and ‘tuh’ (dry) so the . word /atuh/ is interpreted to mean ‘never dry out.’ To get to Atuh Beach, from mainland Bali, visitors must first reach Nusa Penida by boat from Matahari Terbit pier in Sanur (Denpasar) or from Sampalan pier in Klungkung. “That was crazy, I don’t know how I got back into the match,” said a relieved Wozniacki. “I’m very proud of the way I came back. It was definitely very difficult. Definitely wasn’t my best match, especially in the beginning. “All of a sudden seeing myself down, almost out of the tournament, I started playing better and started really playing the tennis that I wanted to play.” Fett, ranked 119th in the world, played some brilliant shots throughout the contest and rattled off eight straight points to win the opening set in 33 minutes. The NBA is investigating a postgame incident Monday night in which several Houston Rockets players went into the Los Angeles Clippers’ locker room at Staples Center, ESPN reported Tuesday. The instigator reportedly was Houston’s Trevor Ariza, with teammates Chris Paul and James Harden trying to calm him, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Executives, coaches, players and security personnel talked with NBA officials Tuesday, and the investigation was to continue Wednesday, Wojnarowski reported. With the Clippers celebrating a win over former teammate Paul and the Rockets, the mood changed swiftly in the locker room when Ariza, Harden, Paul and Gerald Green entered through a back corridor at Staples Center, apparently seeking to confront Los Angeles’

The European Club Football Landscape report said revenues among Europe’s 700-odd top-flight clubs totalled 18.5 billion euros ($22.7 billion) for 2016, compared to 16.9 billion the year before and 2.8 billion in 1996. However, the report acknowledged that nearly half that amount - 9.1 billion euros - was generated by 30 clubs and that the financial gap between the elite ones and the rest was increasing. English Premier League television revenues were now such that mid-table Bournemouth earned the same as threetimes European champions Inter Milan. United’s revenue for 2016 was 689 million euros, compared to 521 million euros in 2015, the report said. United were followed by Barcelona and Real Madrid (both 620 million), Bayern Munich (592 million), Paris St Germain (542 million) and Manchester City (533 million). United’s operating profit of 232 million euros was also the highest followed by Real Madrid, PSG, Bayern Munich, Arsenal and City. United was also burdened with the highest net debt of 561 million euros, ahead of Benfica, Inter Milan, Juventus and Liverpool. The report confirmed that the English Premier League enjoys by far the highest revenues in Europe, averaging 244.4 million euros per club. Next was Germany’s Bundesliga with 149.6 million per
club followed by Spain (126.3 million) and Italy (100.2 million) Revenues fell dramatically elsewhere, even in traditional football nations such as the Netherlands (26.7 million) and Portugal (20.3 million). Greek clubs earned an average of 8.9 million euros while figures for Eastern Europe were even lower at 5 million euros for Hungary, 4.4 million for Czech Republic and 1.5 million for Slovenia. “Once more, we cannot help but note that the polarisation of commercial and sponsorship revenues between the top tier of clubs and the rest is accelerating,” UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin said. “As the guardians of the game, UEFA must ensure that football remains competitive even as financial gaps are augmented by globalisation and technological change.” UEFA analyst Sefton Perry said that “only a limited number of clubs are able to fully exploit the enormous commercial opportunities offered by the global market”. Sixteen of the top 20 clubs in terms of domestic broadcast revenues were English with Manchester United top on 146 million, edging out Real Madrid and Barcelona. Bournemouth earned 99 million euros, level with Inter Milan who, along with Juventus, were the only Serie A side in the top 20. The report confirmed that transfer spending reached record levels of almost 5.6 billion euros in the European summer of 2017, including six of the top 20 most expensive transfers ever recorded. Arsenal were the club who made the most from paying fans. LONDON - Leicester City’s Kelechi Iheanacho scored the first goal in English football to be awarded using the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) as they reached the FA Cup fourth round with a 2-0 replay victory over third-tier Fleetwood Town on Tuesday. Iheanacho, who had put the hosts ahead in the first half, was initially ruled offside when he deftly chipped the ball over the keeper into the net in the 77th minute but the goal was given after consultation between referee Jon Moss and the VAR. Video replays showed former Manchester City striker Iheanacho was level with Fleetwood defender Nathan Pond’s back foot before the Nigeria international raced clear to finish. “I didn’t know if I was onside or offside but I agree totally now that I was onside,” Iheanacho told BT Sport. “I was concentrating on the goal, I didn’t think if I was onside or offside but Riyad (Mahrez) told me that I was onside. Brazil great Ronaldinho to retire, says brother SAO PAULO - Former Brazil and Barcelona midfielder Ronaldinho, who won the World Cup, Champions League, Copa Libertadores and World Player of the Year award, is retiring from the game, his brother and agent Assis said on Tuesday. Ronaldinho has not played a competitive match since 2015 but had avoided calling a definitive halt to his career until now.
“He’s stopped. It’s over,” Assis told the Rio de Janeiro newspaper O Globo. “We’re going to do something pretty big, something cool, after the World Cup in Russia, probably in August.” The events, most likely farewell matches, will take place in Brazil, Europe and Asia, and could include a match with the national team, Assis said. LONDON - Leicester City’s Kelechi Iheanacho scored the first goal in English football to be awarded using the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) as they reached the FA Cup fourth round with a 2-0 replay victory over third-tier Fleetwood Town on Tuesday. To the west of the Atuh Temple there are two springs, one of which is considred sacred and is only used for ceremonial purposes. The other spring is used by surrounding communities for various purposes. According to local stories, the two springs emmerged
during the dry season. A dove was seen drinking under a coconut tree and upon further investigation, the springs were found. Uniquely, both springs that are located adjacent to the beach, have tasteless water and never run dry – even in the dry season. Thus, local residents named the beach ‘Atuh Beach.’ In Balinese, the word /atuh/ is derived from two stems namely ‘a’ (not) and ‘tuh’ (dry) so the . word /atuh/ is interpreted to mean ‘never dry out.’ To get to Atuh Beach, from mainland Bali, visitors must first reach Nusa Penida by boat from Matahari Terbit pier in Sanur (Denpasar) or from Sampalan pier in Klungkung. “That was crazy, I don’t know how I got back into the match,” said a relieved Wozniacki. “I’m very proud of the way I came back. It was definitely very difficult. Definitely wasn’t my best match, especially in the beginning. “All of a sudden seeing myself down, almost out of the tournament, I started playing better and started really playing the tennis that I wanted to play.” Fett, ranked 119th in the world, played some brilliant shots throughout the contest and rattled off eight straight points to win the opening set in 33 minutes. The NBA is investigating a postgame incident Monday night in which several Houston Rockets players went into the Los Angeles Clippers’ locker room at Staples Center, ESPN reported Tuesday. The instigator reportedly was Houston’s Trevor Ariza, with teammates Chris Paul and James Harden trying to calm him, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Executives, coaches, players and security personnel talked with NBA officials Tuesday, and the investigation was to continue Wednesday, Wojnarowski reported. With the Clippers celebrating a win over former teammate Paul and the Rockets, the mood changed swiftly in the locker room when Ariza, Harden, Paul and Gerald Green entered through a back corridor at Staples Center, apparently seeking to confront Los Angeles’

ESPN reported tempers were high and Rockets players were looking for Rivers in particular after Los Angeles won a fifth consecutive game, 113-102. “We were where we were supposed to be,” Griffin said. “We were in our locker room. Police still baffled by discovery of 13 starved, abused siblings PERRIS - Police said on Tuesday they were still seeking answers after finding 13 siblings starving in their parents’ squalid Southern California home, some of them chained to beds under “horrific” conditions in an otherwise ordinary suburb. The grim situation was discovered on Sunday after an emaciated 17-year-old girl escaped through a window of the home in a newer subdivision of Perris, about 70 miles (113 km) east of Los Angeles, and called 911, police said.
“I wish I could come to you today with information that would explain why this happened,” said Captain Greg Fellows of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. “But we do need to acknowledge the courage of the young girl who escaped from that residence to bring attention so they could get the help they so needed.” The parents, 57-year-old David Allen Turpin and Louise Anna Turpin, 49, were arrested at their darkened, foul-smelling house after the girl’s 12 siblings were found there. The shocking case quickly prompted questions of how the victims, who ranged in age from 2 to 29 years old, could have been kept in such grim conditions without raising suspicions of neighbors or authorities. But some experts said it may have been easier for the parents to shield their children from scrutiny because they were home-schooled. “One of the things that was interesting was, he (Turpin) set up his own home school so the kids were accounted for and not really seen by anybody,” said Sherryll Kraizer, a child-abuse prevention expert and the founder of the Coalition for Children. The California Department of Education lists the Turpin address, where the family has lived since 2014, as the location of the Sandcastle
Day School, with David Turpin as principal. Six of the couple’s children are minors, while the rest are over 18, according to neighbors, meaning they are adults under the law. David and Louise Turpin were each charged with nine counts of torture and 10 counts of child endangerment. They were being held on $9 million bail, with an initial court hearing scheduled for Thursday. ‘I WOULD CALL THAT TORTURE’ Police who responded to the girl’s 911 call saw that the children were malnourished, Fellows said, calling conditions “horrific.” Even so, he said, the mother appeared perplexed about why the police were there. “If you can imagine being 17 years old and appearing to be a 10-year-old, being chained to a bed, being malnourished, and injuries associated with that,” Fellows said. “I would call that torture.” Authorities quickly began seeking court authorization to take custody of the children. The state Child Protective Services agency was assisting in an investigation. Kimberly Milligan, 50, said she only saw the infant in the mother’s arms and three other children since she moved in across the street two years ago, describing them as small and pale. “Why don’t we ever see the kids?” Milligan said she asked herself. “In hindsight, we would have never thought this. But there were red flags. You never don’t hear or see nine kids.” Two years ago, while walking around the neighborhood admiring Christmas lights, Milligan said she had encountered three of the Turpin children and complimented them on the manger with a baby Jesus set up outside the house. Hong Kong democracy leader Joshua Wong jailed a second time for 2014 protest
HONG KONG - Hong Kong democracy activist Joshua Wong, 21, was sentenced to a second jail term of three months on Wednesday for what a judge described as his “leading” role during some of the 2014 pro-democracy “Umbrella Movement” street demonstrations. Wong and 19 other demonstrators were found guilty of criminal contempt of court because they refused to obey a court injunction order to leave a protest zone in late November 2014. The protest was part of the biggest populist uprising for decades in Hong Kong and posed a spirited challenge to Beijing’s Communist Party leaders in demanding full democracy. For more than two months, tens of thousands of mostly student and young demonstrators camped out in tents on major highways, defying government, police and Chinese demands to leave. Umbrellas became a symbol of defiance after protesters used them as shields against police pepper spray and batons. High Court Judge Andrew Chan said that even though Wong only stayed in the protest area for 90 minutes on the day in question, “his involvement in obstructing the clearance operation was deep and extensive. He played a leading role on that day”. “In view of his overall involvement, I am of the view that the only appropriate punishment ... will be one of immediate imprisonment,” said Chan. Another activist, Raphael Wong, was also jailed, while the remaining protesters, including former student leader Lester Shum, received suspended sentences. “Thank you
your honour for your ruling. Our determination to fight for genuine universal suffrage will not waver,” stated Raphael Wong in the courtroom before being taken away. Lawyers for both the Wongs said they would appeal, but they were denied an immediate request for bail. Hong Kong, a former British colony, returned to Chinese rule in 1997 amid promises that the Asian financial hub would enjoy a high degree of autonomy under a socalled ‘one country, two systems’ arrangement. A perceived tightening of control by Beijing’s Communist Party leaders in recent years, however, has fuelled a groundswell of pro-democracy activism aimed at defending the city’s constitutionally enshrined freedoms. While a spirited young generation has given Hong Kong’s flagging push for democracy fresh impetus, some 100 key activists have, or could be, jailed in upcoming trials, in what critics say is an attempt to counter the movement’s momentum. Upon learning about the sentence from his lawyers shortly before the court hearing started, Joshua Wong looked up from behind the dock, squeezed his eyes shut and sighed. Wong chose not to fight the charge in the spirit of civil disobedience. Wong had begun serving a sixmonths imprisonment sentence last August for a separate unlawful assembly charge, but he was granted bail by Hong Kong’s highest court, which heard the appeal against the sentence on Tuesday. US backs Indonesia in fight against illegal fishing JAKARTA - The US government has expressed its commitment to support Indonesia in its fight against the illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) Fishing, an official said in his written statement, received by ANTARA here on Tuesday. “Indonesia has launched an impressive effort to fight against IUU Fishing,” Matthew Burton, Environment Director of United States Agency for International Development (USAID), said in Jakarta on Tuesday. Burton noted that for the last three years, the Indonesian government has stepped up its efforts in capturing the illegal fishing boats. However, illegal fishing remains a common challenge that should be resolved effectively through joint action. Earlier last year, the Indonesian Maritime and Fishery Ministry and the US National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) had endorsed the Agreement on Port State Measures to Prevent, Deter and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (PSMA). The two countries also had partnered up to implement the agreement into a concrete measure. The agreement calls on the signatory states to conduct regular inspection of the fishing boats operating at all the ports, in order to prevent the IUU Fishing. The agreement is also aimed at preventing the distribution of fishes collected illegally to the ports in Indonesia as well as other signatory countries. “The partnership between Indonesia and US is intended to bring PSMA into an actual action and halt any products of IUU Fishing from entering the local and global market,” Burton remarked. Hence on Tuesday (Jan 16), USAID and the NOAA Office of Law Enforcement (OLE) initiated a workshop on PSMA, which was attended by 21 officers of the ministry`s Maritime and Fisheries Resources Monitoring Directorate General (PSDKP). “The advance workshop on PSMA is expected to raise the knowledge and the capacity of our officers at ports. We have acknowledged that the Indonesian government has ratified the agreement into the President Regulation No.43 Year 2016,” Nilanto Perbowo, an acting PSDKP director general, remarked in his opening remarks. The ministry has assigned representatives of five main ports, namely Jakarta, Bungus, Bitung, Ambon, and Sukabumi, to attend the workshop, he noted. During the eight-day training, the USAID also invited some NOAA experts to introduce the PSMA to the participants. On August 2016, a similar workshop was hosted, and the trainers launched a simulation aboard the boat on the inspection standard procedures. Enforced worldwide on June 2016, the PSMA is the firstever binding international treaty that focuses specifically on illicit fishing, the Food and Agriculture Organization of United Nations (FAO) remarked in its official website. JAKARTA - Indonesian President Joko Widodo replaced the social affairs minister in his Cabinet on Wednesday and picked a new chief of staff in the third reshuffle of his five-year term. The reshuffle was widely expected because some of Widodo’s ministers have requested leaves of absence to stand in regional elections later this year. However, with only one minister involved, it was
more modest than some expectations. The new social affairs minister is Idrus Marham, a member of Golkar, the second-largest party in Widodo’s coalition. He replaces Khofifah Indar Parawansa, who is standing for election in East Java province. Presidential communications chief Eugenio Chicas said El Salvador was in talks to see how Salvadorans could be employed in Qatar, a wealthy country of some 2.6 million people that is scheduled to host the
soccer World Cup in 2022. “The kingdom of Qatar ... has held out the possibility of an agreement with El Salvador whereby Salvadoran workers could be brought across in phases (to Qatar),” Chicas told reporters. After an unspecified period, the Salvadorans would return home, Chicas added, without saying how many workers the program could encompass.
El Salvador’s foreign minister, Hugo Martinez, is in Qatar until Friday and said in a statement that Salvadorans could work in engineering, aircraft maintenance, construction and agriculture. Shivaratri as Sin Redemption Night, Perform Main Abstinences
Hindu community in Bali celebrates a unique Shivaratri Day. Shivaratri means the holy contemplation night or the sin redemption night. Shivaratri falls one day before new moon in the seventh month of Balinese calendar (Kapitu) and this year falls on Friday (Jan. 8). On this day, Hindu devotees in Bali do fasting and meditation to get forgiveness from God for the sins caused by avidya (darkness). On that day, the Hindu community commonly performs three types of abstinence adjusted to the capabilities. The main abstinences are monabrata (no speaking), upawasa (fasting) and jagra (guarding, keeping awake for whole night). Medium abstinence only performs the upawasa and jagra, while the small abstinence just performs jagra. Shivaratri is often called pejagran day because on that day God in his manifestation as Lord Shiva in his function as destroyer does meditation for whole night. Therefore, on this day devotees invoke to him so that all the sins could be removed. Devotees usually do pejagran at temples or shrines while reading scriptures. The Hindu palm-leaf manuscript named Lubdaka written by Mpu Tanakung carries the procession of Shivaratri with a series as follows: firstly, taking a bath in the morning, putting on clean dressing and invoking holy water. Then, begin the fasting without food and drink. It’s a mental exercise in order to get a strength and durability against thirst and hunger. At night, it is resumed with the reading of Vedic scripture while
keeping awake through the night to calm down the mind. Of course, it is commenced with the worship of God for forgiveness for the sins having been committed previously. In the Lubdaka palm-leaf manuscript is stated that though people are very guilty, even the most sinful, they still have the opportunity to destroy their sins if they sincerely celebrate and implement the abstinence of Shivaratri. In the mythology, Lubdaka is mentioned as a hunter of animals in the forest. Every day, he always kills animals. Once upon a time, he returned to the forest for hunting. Unfortunately he was unlucky on that day, so that did not get any animals. Unwittingly, it was already dusk and it was getting darker. Actually he intended to go home, but it was extremely dark so that he did not know the right way home. He decided to stay, and for fear of being ambushed by beasts he climbed a bilva tree to lean. Unwittingly, underneath there is a clear water lake with a shrine and lingam. To prevent from sleeping for fear of being attacked by animals, he eliminated his sleepiness while picking bilva leaves.

From that day, he stopped hunting and switched profession into a farmer. In keeping with the times, his health condition dropped and eventually died. It is narrated that the soul of Lubdaka was hovering in the sky, did not know where to go. After that, the Cikrabala forces took him away to be included in the Candragomuka crater in Hell. At that time, Lord Shiva came and
intercepted the Cikrabala forces. Cikrabala forces insisted on bringing the soul of Lubdaka to Hell because during his lifetime he often killed many forest animals. Lord Shiva explained that Lubdaka has made penance on the Shivaratri by staying up all night accompanied by remorse over his sins in the past. Thus, he deserved to get forgiveness and ultimately Lubdaka was taken to Shiva Loka. (kmb)

Want to return home, but confused what to do next
EVACUEES whose territory is outside the danger radius of 6 km actually have been allowed to go home after the narrowing of danger radius by the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) a few days ago. However, there are still thousands of evacuees whose territory is outside the radius of 6 km from the top of the volcano remaining to survive in the refuge because they are still worried considering the volcanic activities are still high and the eruption can happen any time. Meanwhile, thousands of evacuees have also returned home because they feel safe. What activities do evacuees do after returning home?

One of the evacuees from Batumadeg hamlet, Besakih, I Kadek Lanus, revealed that his family and some relatives are still in the evacuation even though many Besakih residents have returned to their respective village. He has not returned to his home village because it will be discussed first with family and relatives who are still surviving in the evacuation. “Before the danger radius is lowered, the residents from Batumadeg hamlet evacuating here (post of agriculture—Ed) amount to 99 families with 434 people. After some families returned home, Batumadeg residents remaining to survive in the evacuation are only 12 families consisting of 39 people. Indeed, we want to go home, but we must discuss first with family and relatives. After getting a decision to go home, we will go back to Besakih together so that can hold ngusaba ritual at Dalem Puri Temple,” he said. According to Lanus, other than having to discuss with family and relatives, he has not returned home due to refuge problem. Previously, there was an issue if the shelter is left home it will be occupied by other evacuees. However, after cross-checked to post coordinator, other evacuees cannot occupy the shelter built by evacuees easily. If other evacuees want to come in, they must first report to the post coordinator, hamlet chief and shelter owner. “Only after getting permission from the three elements, the new evacuees are allowed to come into the shelter. If not allowed by the owner, they cannot occupy the shelter. Indeed, the land belonged to the government, but the shelter building was founded by evacuees independently. Moreover, the bamboo was brought directly by the evacuees. To build the shelter, some evacuees even purchased bamboo directly, so it is not easy to occupy the shelters even though the evacuees have left it behind considering the condition of the Mount Agung is not yet normal because if the volcano erupts again I will return to this
post,” added the man. He was very happy to return home considering most of Besakih residents have gone home and are no longer evacuating. However, he is still haunted by worries because the activities of Mount Agung are still high and frequently erupts. “We are still haunted by fear. But since most people have gone home, at least it can reduce the anxiety. If something bad happens, I will evacuate again,” added the man of one child. Another evacuee, Ni Wayan Warta, revealed that on the one hand she is very happy to be able to return home at Besakih. But on the one hand, there is no activity to do, maximally she only looks for firewood considering all the cattle owned have been sold out during the first eruption of Mount Agung some time ago, while she does not dare to farm. She said although the grass began to grow green, she has not dared to purchase cattle to be raised for fear that Mount Agung will erupt again so she has to sell them back. “I’ve had suffered losses twice. Originally, it happened on the first eruption when selling four cows. After the Mount Agung calmed down, I decided to buy a cow again, but after raising cows for a month the Mount Agung erupted again. All the plants dried and I was forced to sell the cows again. I lost about IDR 8 million,” she recalled. Similar opinion was expressed by I Putu Suyasa. He has not owned any activities in the farm, since his cattle were all sold after the first eruption of Mount Agung on September 21, 2018. Fortunately, he is a local tour guide at Besakih after re-opening of Besakih Temple by the Management Agency. So, there is activity after returning home. “It is the only activity after my returning home. When getting the turn to escort guest, I will go out to work. MANGUPURA - The hunt for mugging and pickpocket perpetrators that had taken action in the area of Kuta subdistrict continues to be done. The victim had time to chase but lost track. “Most of the victims are foreigners so the handphone taken is expensive such as iPhone and Samsung that are currently in trend,” he said. Besides, police also arrested a pickpocket, Komang Putra Laksana, 25, at Jalan Juwet Sari, Pemogan, South Denpasar. The victim is Lisa Cecilia Remsu, 18, from Finland. Nations to consider more N.Korea sanctions, U.S. warns on military option
VANCOUVER, Jan 17 (Reuters) - Twenty nations agreed on Tuesday to consider tougher sanctions to press North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons and U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson warned Pyongyang it could trigger a military response if it did not choose negotiations. A U.S.-hosted meeting of countries that backed South Korea during the 1950-53 Korea War also vowed to support renewed dialogue between the two Koreas “in hopes that it leads to sustained easing of tensions” and agreed that a diplomatic solution to the crisis was both essential and possible. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has refused to give up development of nuclear missiles capable of hitting the United States in spite of increasingly severe U.N. sanctions, raising fears of a new war on the Korean peninsula. The United States and Canada co-hosted the day-long meeting in Vancouver to discuss ways to increase pressure on Kim. U.S. officials have reported a debate within the Trump administration over whether to give more active consideration to military options, such as a pre-emptive strike on a North Korean nuclear or missile site. Tillerson brushed off a question about such a “bloody nose” strike, telling a closing news conference: “I’m a not going to comment on issues that have yet to be decided
among the National Security Council or the president.” However, he said the threat posed by North Korea was growing. “We all need to be very sober and clear-eyed about the current situation ... We have to recognize that the threat is growing and if North Korea does not chose the pathway of engagement, discussion, negotiation, then they themselves will trigger an option,” Tillerson said. “Our approach is, in terms of having North Korea chose the correct step, is to present them with what is the best option – talks are the best option; that when they look at the military situation, that’s not a good outcome for them.” “It is time to talk, but they have to take the step to say they want to talk.” The Vancouver meeting pledged

Partner’s scent eases women’s response to stress
Stress levels dropped in women who smelled their partner’s shirt during a stress test but rose in women who smelled a stranger’s shirt, researchers found. “Many people wear their partner’s shirt or sleep on their partner’s side of the bed when their partner is away but may not realize why they engage in these behaviors,” said lead study author Marlise Hofer, a psychology graduate student at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. “A partner’s scent alone, even without their physical presence, can be a powerful tool to help reduce stress,” Hofer told Reuters Health by email. Hofer and colleagues worked with 96 couples, most in their early 20s, to complete the study. They asked the men to wear a white T-shirt for 24 hours without deodorant or scented products. Then the shirts were turned inside out, folded and placed in a sealed plastic freezer bag with the underarm section facing the opening. The women participated in the Trier Social Stress Test, which includes a mock job interview and unanticipated mental math question that causes a stress response. They were randomly assigned to smell a single shirt three times before and three times after the stress test. The shirt might have been worn by their romantic partner or a stranger, or it might have been new and unworn. The women also completed a questionnaire five times during the experiment to indicate anxiety, physical discomfort, tension, desire to leave the situation and feelings of control. Saliva samples were collected seven times during the experiment to measure levels of the stress hormone cortisol. The research team found that perceived stress changed during the experiment for most women, and
those who smelled a partner’s shirt felt less stressed both during and after the stress test than those who smelled a stranger’s or unworn shirt. The researchers were surprised to find that cortisol levels were higher after the stress test in women who smelled a stranger’s shirt. “These unanticipated findings could serve as a source of future research,” Hofer said. Cortisol levels didn’t differ between women who smelled their partner’s shirt and an unworn shirt. Dr. Donald McBurney, professor emeritus of the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, has researched olfactory comfort in close relationships. “In our studies, we received many anecdotes, including lovers who mailed worn clothing back and forth between military members and their partners back home,” McBurney, who wasn’t involved in the new study, told Reuters Health by email. “And hospitals give infants items of their mother’s clothing to sleep with.” Future research should investigate whether perceived stress and cortisol responses are the same for men and if additional factors could reduce stress for both men and women, said Dr. Sean Mackey of the Stanford University School of Medicine in Palo Alto, California. Mackey, who wasn’t involved with this study, has researched romantic relationships and experiences of pain. “Can we further manipulate this (decreased stress) response and amplify it?” he wrote in an email to Reuters Health. “How does the strength of the (romantic) relationship affect the response?” Beyond a controlled laboratory setting, researchers should also study how this works in real-world applications, he added. “During times of stress, keep those you love close to you,” Mackey said. ‘If you are going to be away during a stressful period, it may be useful to bring an article of their clothing.” (rtr)

However, injecting the virus directly into the brain would be difficult and potentially dangerous. Alan Melcher of Britain’s Institute of Cancer Research, who also co-led the study, said the results pointed a way forward for more trials using this virus, including testing whether it can harness the immune system to super-charge the effect of existing chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments. “Now we know we can get reovirus across the blood-brain barrier, we have begun clinical studies to see just how effective this viral immunotherapy can be,” he said. Immune boosting virus could be used to treat brain tumours
LONDON - A trial of a potential new brain cancer treatment has shown that a virus injected directly into the bloodstream can reach tumours deep inside the brain and switch on the body’s own defence system to attack them. The trial involved just nine patients, but scientists said that if the results could be replicated in larger studies, the naturally occurring ‘reovirus’ could be developed into an effective immunotherapy for people with aggressive brain tumours. “This is the first time it has been shown that a therapeutic virus is able to pass through the brain-blood barrier,” said Adel Samson, a medical oncologist at the University of Leeds’ Institute of Cancer and Pathology who coled the work. He said their trial had shown not only that a virus could be delivered to a tumour deep in the brain, but that when it reached its target, “it stimulated the body’s own immune defences to attack the cancer”. Published in the journal Science Translational Medicine on Wednesday, the trial involved nine patients with tumours that had either spread to the brain from other areas or were fastgrowing gliomas, an aggressive type of brain cancer. Fourth quarter of 2017, outflow of Bali declines

Mobile cash activities in 2017 decreased when compared to 2016, carried out for 113 times. It happened because BI Bali has owned deposit cash in Buleleng so it reduces its mobile cash activities in Buleleng and surrounding areas. Meanwhile, the activities of mobile cash in 2015 reached 89 times. O’Riordan, 46, was found dead in a London hotel on Monday morning during a recording trip to London ahead of a planned tour, her publicist said. No cause of death has been given. London police said in a statement that a 46-year-old woman was discovered at a hotel in London’s Park Lane early on Monday and was pronounced dead at the scene. “The death is not being treated as suspicious,” the state-
