Most of the fatalities from Florence, which made landfall Friday as a Category 1 hurricane, have occurred in North Carolina, where officials confirmed eight victims. DENPASAR - Some 150 countries take part in World Cleanup Day every year with Indonesia having joined for the first time this year. In Bali, cleanups were held on dozens of beaches, temples and tributaries in all nine district and municipality as well as on the lakes of the island. The cleanup on Mertasari Beach Sanur officially began at 07:00 with the Deputy Governor of Bali, Tjok Oka Artha Ardhana Sukawati on Saturday (Sep. 15) opening the event.
People from all walks of life thronged Mertasari Beach armed with their own cleanup tools such as brooms, trach bins and sacks to collect garbage. Acting Head of the Bali Environment Agency, Luh Ayu Aryani, said that World Cleanup Day in Bali was indeed centered on Mertasari Beach, Sanur with the City of Denpasar doing cleanups on Biaung Beach and Muara Tangtu Beach. “We have involved the Indonesian Military and National Police (TNI and Polri), provincial and Denpasar municipal agencies, vertical agencies, businesses, environmental activists, and local communities with a total of about 2,500 participants”, she said. Aryani added that cleanups were also carried out on Kuta Beach, Jerman Beach, Jimbaran Beach, Geger Beach, Petitenget Beach, Berawa Beach and Bagus Agrotourism in Badung district. Then, Campuhan Ubud, Purnama Beach, Siyut Beach and Saba Beach in Gianyar; Lepang Beach and Jumpai Beach in Klungkung; Soka Beach in Tabanan; Yeh Kuning Beach in Jembrana; Pemuteran Beach, Lovina Beach and Lake Buyan in Buleleng, Batur Temple and surrounding areas in Bangli as well as Cinta Beach and Kerta Mandala village in Karangasem. In addition to increasing awareness about the problem of garbage in Bali, World Cleanup Day is also expected to become a mass movement. “It is meant to make Bali green, beautiful, clean
and free of rampant garbage by promoting values and love for a sustainable environment. It is also meant to step up to the challenge to show the world that Bali is a cohesive society that cares for the environment”, explained Head of the Bali Forestry Service. Aryiani added that data from 2014 shows that Bali produces about 10,000 cubic meters of garbage per day, most of which is simply tossed into landfills. The general public still needs to become aware of the need to sort their garbage at the household level and to apply the 3Rs (Reduce, reuse, recycle). When interviewed separately, Deputy Governor of Bali, familiarly addressed as Cok Ace, said the sea is currently heavily polluted with plastic which is extremely hazardous to the marine ecosystem and that though many may not be aware, this also affect humans on land. “Coral reefs damages by plastic for example means there are less fish and also makes the coastline more vulnerable to abrasion. Fishermen are the first to feel this effect as their livelihood depends on the sea”, he said. Cok Ace added that he hopes the garbage cleanup movement can help control coastal and marine pollution by reducing the amount of plastic waste that goes out to sea as well as managing and protecting the environment in accordance with the Balinese people’s life based on the philosophy known as the sad kertih or six natural harmonies, consisting of atma kertih (purifying the soul), danu kertih (preserving springs on mainland), wana kertih (preserving forests), segara kertih (preserving the ocean), jana kertih (maintaining individual quality), and jagat kertih (maintaining social relationship). Beach cleanups he said are a form of segara kertih. “We must not the beauty of the sea become tarnished by the amount of garbage scattered on the beaches. Hopefully this cleanup activity is not just done ceremoniously but becomes a grounded and effective movement to overcome the threat that garbage poses to Bali”, he concluded. (kmb32)
DENPASAR - Cigarette butts were the most common type of garbage collected during World Cleanup Day on Mertasari Beach, Sanur, on Saturday (Sep. 15). Despite their size, cigarette butts should not be seen as benign. Even a small thing in large enough number has the potential for have a big negative impact on the environment. “The most hazardous type of garbage is cigarettes butt (filters) as people sometimes don’t think about where they are throwing them away and they are very hard to pick up afterwards”, explained Putu Evie Suyadnyani from Trash Hero Kertalangu (Denpasar Region) during World Cleanup Day. Small garbage like cigarette butts are often overlooked during garbage cleanups however -not only do they not biodegrade very well, but they also contain nicotine toxins that interfere with the ecosystem. “People can smoke, but they should be aware of the people around them and where they are throwing their cigarette butts”, she said. Plastic straws, cups, candy wrappers and bottle caps are also common culprits. The World Cleanup Day activity in Bali entitled “Suksma Bali” (literally, thanks Bali) importantly invites people to be aware and con-
cerned about garbage. Garbage is not just a problem in Bali or Indonesia but in the whole world. Trash Hero branches all over the world have been instrumental in the success of World Cleanup Day. “So, instead of pointing fingers we are working together to solve this problem. We want the public to care and be aware that we need to start with ourselves – especially at home where we can sort our garbage and educate youngsters”, explained Elvie. Plastic garbage has become a particularly serious problem that disrupts the ecosystem and marine biota and thus human health as well. People all over the world can become aware that that we need to take action now. Trash Hero not only holds routine cleanup activities but also promotes going on plastic “diets” (not using plastic). “We also go to schools to provide education about plastic reduction and run plastic waste reduction programs encouraging people and businesses to reduce their use of plastic straws, plastic bags, and all types of disposable plastic. “This includes campaigning to have people always carry a drinking bottle with them and to refill it rather than buying bottled water”, she added. Mutual assistance to build tourism of Nusa Penida
Surprising eSwatini (Swaziland): culture, safari and vast, unspoilt landscapes SWAZILAND - Swaziland is one of those countries which few people can actually place on the map. And just as few people can tell you that it’s actually no longer called Swaziland at all: King Mswati III changed the name of the country to eSwatini in April this year. I arrived here as ignorant as anyone. I’d flown from London to Johannesburg with South African Airways, then driven four hours – much of it through the Kruger National Park – to the border with Swaziland. There were ostrich and rhino wandering loose outside the fuel station, which was the first sign of things to come. It is unusual these days to arrive in a country with no preconceptions. The barrage of travel bloggers, glossy magazines, and documentaries on TV ensures that there are very few places left on Earth that we know nothing about at all. For me at least, Swaziland was one of them. I expected to learn something new; I didn’t realise I’d completely be blown away. History of Swaziland
The best guess is that Swaziland has been inhabited for the past 200,000 years. The earliest people to live here were hunter-gatherers, and archeological excavations at the Ngwenya Mine – the oldest mine site in the world – show that it was already in use 43,000 years ago. I passed through the Malolotje Wildlife Reserve, then continued on foot to the mouth of a cave. Early man would have sat here and chipped away at the red ochre, using it not only for rock paintings but for cosmetic purposes as well.

The Swazis have unparalleled pride in their national culture, and have preserved it remarkably well in spite of globalisation. The annual Incwala Festival and Umhlanga Reed Dance still draw participants from across the country, who perform before Swaziland’s revered king and queen mother. Wherever I went, there was dancing, in city stadiums and in traditional villages. Men and women typically dance, sing, and drum in single sex groups, demonstrating to all those who watch their energy and strength. It’s an incredibly creative culture. You only have to look at the age old designs of thatched huts, national costumes, and the handicrafts which people produce. Swaziland is famed for its glass blowing and its candle making. The

The one thing I really didn’t expect to see was a high concentration of wildlife: there’s a reason that people go on safari in South Africa, Kenya, or Tanzania. But remarkably, Swaziland’s national parks are rich in big game, including a wonderfully high population of black rhino. I drove out at dusk through the Mkhaya Game Reserve, following jeep tracks through the bush. The hippos wallowed in the pools, the heads of giraffe poked out above the trees. All of a sudden, the guide slammed on the brakes. In front of us, right in the road, were rhino. They seemed totally oblivious to the fact that we were there, carried on eating, then after a short while turned, pointing their bottoms towards us, and casually wandered off. My heart was in my mouth – I’d never seen one, let alone two, black rhino that close – but in Mkhaya, it seems, such sightings are everyday occurrences. Activities
With vast, unspoilt landscapes and a low population density, large parts of Swaziland are a wilderness ripe for exploration. It’s almost always possible to get out and about on foot and by 4×4, but sometimes the environment calls for a little more excitement. Swaziland’s first and only canopy tour is in the Malolotje Nature Reserve. Strung from cliff to cliff, and with a pristine forest below, are numerous zip lines and also a wooden rope bridge. I’m not afraid of heights but I do like being in control, so stepping off a platform and trusting that a harness would hold me required great determination. The first ride was terrifying, the second less so, and by the time I hit the third and fourth runs, I was zipping along with glee.
Phophonyane Eco Lodge is hidden in mountain forest, a short distance away from the waterfall which gives it its name. Between the running streams and ponds nestle beehive huts and safari tents. Narina trogon flap in the trees, and the sound of the red duiker whistling carries on the wind. (net)

One of the factors enabling this condition is the availability of more transportation services to Nusa Penida. Besides, the infrastructure is improved and the promotion is not only carried out by some people but the entire community of Nusa Penida participates in building Nusa Penida tourism. A Nusa Penida resident who is also Director of PT. Panca Sari Wisata, Ketut Tunggu, said that since the implementation of the Nusa Penida Festival supported with adequate infrastructure, Nusa Penida tourism developed by degrees. Every day, there are 45 boats operating from 07:30 am to 17:00 transporting guests to Nusa Penida. Thousands of visitors per day come to Nusa Penida. Local people’s livelihood originally relied on raising cattle, cultivating corn and cassava with harvest made once a year and seaweed cultivation with harvest of every 30 days has shifted to be tourism workers and business players. “I am really proud because almost 75 percent of the accommodation services in Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan are established by local natives, especially beginner investors from Nusa Penida,” he said. This owner of sea transportation originally had one boat, but now has grown to more than two boats, while some others even have more than seven boats. They are mostly owned by the natives to Nusa Penida region. Besides, there are land transportation entrepreneurs from various types of vehicles. In the first Nusa Penida Festival, the Klungkung government teamed up with travel agencies belonging
to the members of the Association of Indonesia Tour and Travel Agency (ASITA) invited to make site inspection to Nusa Penida. Ultimately, they saw directly the tourism potential to be developed both as investors and operators of tour packages that can be marketed to various countries. Besides, the people of Nusa Penida begin to move together and promote through social media such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and others. They are very enthusiastic in welcoming the tourism development in Nusa Penida. Some of them provide snorkeling, boats, land transportation, accommodations and tour packages. “This togetherness movement makes the Islands of Nusa Penida get the world’s attention for the beauty of both land and underwater panorama,” said Tunggu who is also a member of the ASITA Bali. Now, Klungkung district relies heavily on revenue in the field of tourism, both in the Klungkung mainland and the three sister islands in Nusa Penida namely, Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan. Many attractions have been very well known in Nusa Penida such as the Atuh Beach, known as Raja Lima Beach, Teletubbies Hill, Giri Putri Cave, Kelingking Beach, Angel Billabong, Pasih Uug Beach as well as Crystal Bay Beach. The underwater panorama having been very famous from ancient times is diving sport. Meanwhile, the favorite sites for snorkeling are Manta Point, Crystal Bay Point, Gamat Bay Point, Toyapakeh Wall Point, Buda Point Statue, Mangrove Point, GT Point and Buyuk Point. Eco lodges may as well have been invented for Swaziland. The visitor numbers are never huge, but the natural world is nevertheless fragile and deserves to be protected. Problems behind the tourism growth
DENPASAR - Amid the gradual tourism development, Nusa Penida experiences a number of problems. One of them is the iconic seaweed farming having been slowly marginalized. The newly growing business is related to motorcycle taxi, rent a car, homestay and tour guiding. A resident of Nusa Penida, Putu Krisna, 22, stated that two years ago his grandmother was still doing seaweed cultivation on the Nyuh Beach. Tourism was then developing. Many guests arrived by boat docking at Nyuh hamlet. In the long run, the local seaweed farmers began to decrease and even have left the profession at this time. Reduced seaweed farmers also happen due to unavailability of seaweed seedlings. Besides, the seaweed does not want to live after the transplantation. He alleged it happens due to the influence of diesel from the docking boat. “So, on average the farmers at Nyuh hamlet have returned to their homes,” said this graduate of Electrical Engineering. According to Krisna, the community did not automatically leave their previous livelihood. Some people remain to pursue their previous profession as farmers and breeders. “In the morning, they work as tour guide while in the afternoon they return to raise cattle,” said this young man operating the website Penidago.com. Nusa Penida has three ports, namely at Nyuh hamlet, Sampalan and Buyuk. In the three coastal areas, seaweed farmers only exist in Nyuh hamlet. “Other regions have no seaweed farmers, but those in the eastern area of Sampalan remains active in seaweed cultivation,” said Krisna.
This member of the ASITA Bali, who is also the resident of Nusa Penida, Ketut Tunggu, said that Klungkung has many tourism issues and they must be sought after a solution immediately. A number of issues expressed include the ownership status of tourism objects that are still owned by individuals. This must be found a middle way. By doing so, the management is not partial but becomes an integral part and entirely managed by the regional government. There is no special arrangement for the well known tourist objects both domestically and internationally. “This well-known object should not recede due to lacking of innovation and neat arrangement reflecting the seven charms or sapta pesona. Here, a professional management body is needed to make this tourist object reflect the charms,” he said. According to him, breakthroughs and coordination with related institutions such as transportation and traffic agency are still lacking. This causes a congestion point that should not occur. Public awareness of tourism culture is also lacking as seen from many tourism services remaining to have not implemented standardization or competence in the tourism field. Australia aged care scandals sparks national probe
Alleged to have caused sea turtles to die
NEGARA - Lately, a number of turtles were found dead and stranded on the coast of Jembrana. In addition to turtles, within the past two months bottlenose dolphins were found getting stranded on the coast of Perancak. The latest dead turtles were found on the Pekutatan Beach and tied to a rope on Friday (Sep. 14). Coordinator of the Kurma Asih Turtle Conservation Group (KPP) of Perancak, I Wayan Anom Astika Jaya, claimed to be concerned about this condition. He hoped that no more turtles will die. According to Anom, there should be related parties following it up. Together with other turtle conservationists, he hoped that no more turtles will die because of natural factors or intentional factors (hunted) by humans. Having got involved in turtle conservation for decades in Jembrana, the phenomenon on the death of sea turtles in the sea is the first time to happen. Moreover, the finding interval of one dead turtle and another is close. So far, his conservation agency and several other KPPs in Jembrana continue to strive to preserve turtles. Thus, the turtle population continues to grow. Currently, all types of turtles are in the category of protected animals. If there is indeed no regulation that governs, the development must be stopped so that tourism development does not violate conservation area or the green belt. “If there is no regulation, it does not necessarily mean it is totally free,” explained the deputy governor who is also a tourism figure. Cok Ace did not deny if the government and regulations produced so far are always late compared to the private sector. On that account, the Klungkung district government is specifically asked to start controlling the permits issued. “Temporarily, the issuance of permits should be stopped first especially in the regions that we need to protect and conserve,” he said. He added that tourism development is not merely seen from the trend or interest of tourists coming to Lembongan and Bali in general.
However, it must also consider the strength or carrying capacity. If tourism is analogized to a cup of coffee having been delicious, the taste of coffee will disappear if continuing to be filled with water. “Bali must feature its culture. These problems will be overcome by making a Bali grand design in the future. “We start from the beginning. We begin to cluster the characteristics of each region. because the development of Bali is now in single governance. All of them are controlled, synergized and coordinated so that no district will works on their own,” he explained. Each district and municipality, continued Cok Ace, actually has an extraordinary character. Karangasem, for example, is closely associated with spiritual tourism as supported by the existence of the universal temples such as the Andakasa, Lempuyang, and Besakih Temple. In the northern region can be developed conservation tourism in the presence of lakes. Then, Tabanan can work on agro-tourism; Gianyar works on the arts and serves as cultural center, and southern Bali can be focused on hospitality. “Travelers can stay in Badung while seeing the beauty of Karangasem, the arts in Gianyar. HONG KONG - Typhoon Mangkhut rocked Hong Kong before striking mainland China on Sunday, injuring scores and sending skyscrapers swaying, after killing at least 49 people in the Philippines and ripping a swathe of destruction through its agricultural heartland.
The world’s biggest storm this year left large expanses in the north of the main Philippine island of Luzon underwater as fierce winds tore trees from the ground and rain unleashed dozens of landslides. It made landfall on the coast of Jiangmen city, in southern China’s Guangdong province, Sunday evening after battering Hong Kong. Hong Kong weather authorities issued their maximum alert for the storm, which hit the city with gusts of more than 230 kilometres per hour (142 mph) and left over 100 injured, according to government figures. As the storm passed south of Hong Kong, trees were snapped in half and roads blocked, while some windows in tower blocks were smashed and skyscrapers swayed, as they are designed to do in intense gales. The Philippines was just beginning to count the cost of the typhoon which hit northern Luzon on Saturday, and the death toll jumped to 49 on Sunday evening as more landslide victims were discovered. In the town of Baggao the typhoon demolished houses, tore off roofs and downed power lines. Some roads were cut off by landslides and many remained submerged.
Farms across northern Luzon, which produces much of the nation’s rice and corn, were sitting under muddy floodwater, their crops ruined just a month before harvest. “We’re already poor and then this happened to us. SYDNEY - Australia will launch a national inquiry into its scandal-plagued aged care sector, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said Sunday, following numerous reports of abuse, neglect and mismanagement. The announcement comes a year after a state-run dementia nursing home in South Australia state was shut when an investigation revealed horrific mistreatment of elderly residents over a 10-year period. Since that scandal, the health department has closed almost one aged care service each month, while a growing number are failing to meet standards, Morrison said in a statement. “Incidences of older people being hurt by failures of care simply cannot be explained or excused,” he added. “We must be assured about how widespread these cases are... there clearly remains areas of concern with regard to the quality and safety of aged care services.” The inquiry will probe profit and non-for-profit organisations, and also look at the care given to younger Australians with disabilities living in such facilities. There has been a 177 percent leap in the number of aged-care homes where a “serious risk” to residents were identified in the 2017-18 financial year, according to government data released to Sydney’s Sunday Telegraph. The figures also show a 292
percent increase in the number of facilities that were falling significantly short of government regulations. The prime minister said the royal commission would be critical in guiding how Australia copes with caring for its growing elderly population. Demand for services is expected to surge as the “baby boomer” generation born after World War II swells the ranks of retirees. Canberra funding for aged care is already at record levels, reaching Aus$18.6 billion ($13.3 billion) in 2017-18. The government expects it to grow in the next five years by a further Aus$5 billion. Around one in seven Australians are aged 65 and above, according to 2017 government data, with the proportion of elderly people tipped to reach 22 percent of the population by 2057. A damning 146-page report released in February catalogued numerous complaints of abuse and neglect at aged care facilities. Some of the worst cases raised included a 70-year-old attacked and killed by another elderly resident, the use of restraints, overdosing of patients and the indecent assault of a 99-year-old woman by a male carer. FRANKFURT — The European Central Bank pushed forward Thursday with its plan to gradually phase out its monetary stimulus, saying it is confident in the region’s growth. But its president, Mario Draghi, warned that the United States’ trade dispute with several major powers has become a key economic concern. The chief monetary authority for the 19 countries that use the euro confirmed Thursday that its bond-buying stimulus would be cut to 15 billion euros ($17.4 billion) a month from 30 billion euros after September. The decision was widely expected after being mapped out in detail at the bank’s June 14 meeting. The ECB set out its plans to halt the stimulus in December and postpone any interest rate increase until well after that. Analysts do not expect a rate hike until the second half of 2019 at the earliest. Draghi said at a post-decision news conference that the eurozone was seeing “an on-going, broad-based expansion.” Trouble in markets in emerging markets like Argentina and Turkey “so far does not show any sign of spillover,” he said. Sweet and Mellow Taste of Jaje Cerorot
The Hindu community in Bali which always preserves its ancestral culture has various unique and delicious traditional cakes or jaje. There is jaje purely the result of creative process of the community, while the others are the result of acculturation with other regional cultures or even that of other countries. Whatever the cake is, it remains to be preserved amidst of Balinese society until now. Even, its existence is always associated with ceremonial activities and Hindu ritual on the Island of the Gods. For example, one of them is jaje cerorot. Optionally, it is often named the jaje blukbuk, usually served when the Hindu community is carrying out a wedding ceremony in the process of proposing. Jaje cerorot is accompanied with a pillow-like cake. In Bali, this cake belongs to snack made from local (Balinese) rice flour combined with brown sugar and salt. On that account, it has a brownish red color. Cerorot is shaped with young coconut leaf wrap resembling a cone. For children, this cake is often referred to as the trumpet cake because the wrap is like a trumpet. There is a special technique for eating this cake. If people do not know, they will open the pin (bamboo pin to button the wrap) and then eat the soft and creamy cake. For those who already know the technique of eating it will push on the tip at the lower end of the young coconut leaf pointing to the top, so that the content of the cake appears. Just press and adjust how long we are able to chew it. If you eat a little, then push it a little too, and if you can eat at once, then push it full. Once again, to take out the content fully, push
the pointed end of the wrapper so that the content comes out. There is no need to open the curd of the wrap when eating the cake. Lately, this cake is usually used for refreshment served for guests to accompany the drinks like coffee or tea. It is usually easy to get as widely sold in traditional markets and cake shops. Unlike before, if there was no wedding ceremony, this was not made. Unfortunately, this sweet tasting cake can only last for one day. The ingredients used to make the jaje cerorot are local rice, brown sugar and salt (to taste). First of all, the rice is washed clean, and then soaked overnight. After that, resume and make it into flour. In the past, the making of flour in the traditional way was pounded with pestle in the mortar. Then, sieve the flour. This traditionally made flour makes the cake taste better when compared to flour made by factory. Brown sugar is then liquefied with hot water and then filtered as well. Next, add flour into the cold brown sugar liquid with the addition of enough salt. To prepare the wrap, make the packaging from young coconut leaf. Remove the stick of the leaf, fold at one of the ends and then twist circularly resembling a cone. After the coconut leaf wrap has been made, the mixture is poured into the wrapper. Be careful, do not let it be full because when steamed it can melt and fall. Finally, steam them until cooked (for approximately 20 minutes). To check whether the cake is already cooked, insert a palm stick into the steamed dough. If the dough is not sticky when being pulled, it means the cake is already cooked. If it has been cooked, take out the cake and it is ready to be served. (kmb)

Old Books of Gedong Kirtya Collection to Be Restored
In addition to storing thousands of titles of lontars or palm-leaf manuscripts, Gedong Kirtya Singaraja has a collection of old books by writers both from Bali and the Netherlands. The book was written in 1950 while some others were at the end of the 19th century. As a result, condition of the books is fragile and even very difficult to be read. For this situation, the Buleleng district government will soon restore the old books stored in the Gedong Kirtya. Head of the Buleleng Culture Agency, Gede Komang, said last week that the books were very valuable as reference materials. At present, his agency is carrying out makeshift maintenance. This happens because until now there is no Culture Agency staff who understands about the good maintenance mechanism of the book collections. “Most of the books have been damaged and are very difficult to be read because they have been damaged,” he said. According to him, his agency has now coordinated with the Buleleng Archives and Library Office and the Bali Provincial Archives Office. The results of the coordination were responded positively. The Culture Agency is suggested to submit a restoration proposal to the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia (ANRI). Regarding the cost
of the book restoration is estimated to reach approximately IDR 25 million. His agency then submitted a proposal to the ANRI, so that the book collections in Gedong Kirtya can be restored properly. Spanish farmers go nuts for almonds as global demand booms
SANTA CRUZ - Surging worldwide demand for almonds is pushing Spanish farmers to replace traditional wheat and sunflower fields with almond orchards, transforming the landscape in the south of the country.
Almonds, thanks to their well-advertised health benefits, are enjoying global demand as snacks or in derivative forms like almond milk and almond flour, used as dairy or wheat alternatives. In the Guadalquivir valley in the parched southern region of Andalusia “the landscape has changed so much in recent years that wild boar now come down from the hills to eat almonds”, said agronomist Curro Lopez, 50, an expert on almond farming with Spanish agriculture machinery firm Agrosan. During the harvest, which in Santa Cruz near Cordoba began at the end of August, large nets are laid on the ground to collect almonds which are then shaken off the wispy branches of the trees by a machine in just a few seconds. Spain is on track to harvest over 61,000 tonnes of almonds during the 2018-19 season, a record amount and a 15-percent rise over the previous season, according to estimates from a national producers’ association. Spain is the world’s third biggest almond producer behind Australia, and the United States which is the world’s top producer by a huge margin. California alone accounts for 80 percent of the world’s supply of almonds, according to its powerful almond board, which tirelessly promotes the benefits of the nut as a source of protein and healthy fats. Spain, which uses almonds in many traditional

desserts such as nougats, continues to import huge quantities of almonds from California despite being a major producer of the nut itself.

“When we think that it was Spanish missionaries who brought almonds to the United States” in the 18th century, said Jose Millan, as he supervised the harvesting of almonds from his family’s land in Santa Cruz. The 61-year-old was one of the first to introduce intensive almond farming to Andalusia a decade ago. Today, 62 hectares (150 acres) out of the family’s 650 hectares of land are dedicated to the crop. His neighbours have followed his example. While almond trees were largely absent from the Andalusian countryside, today irrigated almond orchards can be found everywhere in the region. Forsaking sunflowers or wheat, farmers are betting on almond trees which can easily complement olive tree harvesting since the same tree “shaker” machines can be used on both crops. “World almond production doubled in the last 10-12 years, going from 600,000 tonnes to 1.2 million tonnes, and consumption has increased at the same rhythm,” said Cristobal Perez, who runs a factory that opened recently near Cordoba which transforms almonds into by-products. Farmers have been encouraged to grow almonds due to rising prices which went from three euros ($3.5) per kilo (2.2 pounds) to nine euros per kilo four to five years ago, he said. At least 13 people have been killed and eight are still missing after a ferry caught fire and sank in central Indonesia, an official said Saturday. The boat was believed to be carrying nearly 150 passengers off the coast of Sulawesi province on Friday when the blaze started. High waves hampered initial rescue efforts but 126 people had been saved by Saturday afternoon. A search and rescue operation is underway for remaining passengers. “Based on reports from the passengers’ families there are still some people missing,” transport ministry spokesman Wisnu Wardana told AFP. Among the deaths were two toddlers. Most of the rescued passengers were found wearing life jackets. The cause of the accident was unclear. The Indonesian archipelago of more than 17,000 islands is heavily reliant on boat transport, but safety standards are often ignored and fatal maritime accidents are common. In June, more than 160 people died when a ferry sank in Lake Toba, a popular tourist attraction in western Indonesia. The boat was believed to be operating illegally without a passenger manifest and with a limited number of life jackets on board. More than 300 people are estimated to have drowned in 2009 when a ferry sank between Sulawesi and Borneo islands. (afp)

JAKARTA — An Indonesian court sentenced an Islamic militant on Thursday to 11 years in prison after finding him guilty of conducting training in preparation for a terrorist attack. Wawan Kurniawan was arrested along with four other militants last October by the anti-terror squad in Pekanbaru, the capital of Riau province. Judge Suhartono, who presided over the trial at West Jakarta District Court, said Wawan had been proven guilty under the anti-terror law. Wawan, 43, was the local leader of Jemaah Anshorut Daulah, an Indonesian militant network affiliated with the Islamic State group that has been implicated in attacks in the country. Wawan was accused of having provoked a riot in May at a high-security police detention center in which six officers were killed by Islamic inmates who took control of part of the prison near Indonesia’s capital. One militant was also killed. A week later, four sword-wielding men who allegedly belonged to Jemaah Anshorut Daulah attacked a police headquarters in Pekanbaru and were fatally shot by police. A fifth man who drove their vehicle was arrested while trying to escape. One officer died and two others were injured. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement carried by its Aamaq news agency. Prosecutors had sought a 13-year jail sentence for Wawan, but the panel of judges said they decided to be lenient because of his politeness during the trial and because he had never been sentenced in a criminal case before. Indonesia has carried out a sustained crackdown on militants since bombings by al-Qaida-affiliated radicals in Bali in 2002 killed 202 people. (ap)

As a result the number of malaria cases is twice as high as in the same period last year, prompting the West Lombok gov-
ernment to declare a health emergency. Among the 137 infected are babies and pregnant women. The government has taken steps to prevent the disease from spreading such as taking blood samples, distributing mosquito nets and fogging. Amaq Aniyah, 65, was diagnosed with malaria after feeling unwell for a week. His house was destroyed by a 6.9 magnitude quake in early August and since then he has been living in a tent. Paramedics have given him a mosquito net. “Ideally we should give mosquito nets to everyone but because we only have a
few, we have to be selective,” said paramedic Farlin, who like many Indonesians goes by one name. The head of West Lombok regency, Fauzan Halid, told AFP they only have 3,000 mosquito nets but need about 10,000. Declaration of a health emergency will allow West Lombok to seek 3.4 billion rupiah ($230,000) in aid from the provincial and central government to tackle the crisis. Alvarez ready for rematch after Golovkin dethroned
LAS VEGAS - Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is eyeing a trilogy with Gennady Golovkin after ending the middleweight champion’s unbeaten reign here Saturday.
Mexican star Alvarez produced a performance of guts and resilience to inflict the first defeat of Golovkin’s career with a majority decision at the T-Mobile Arena. At first I aimed for the knockout, I didn’t. I’m satisfied with the way we did it today.” While Golovkin’s camp felt he had done enough to clinch victory, there was little sense of injustice following the fight. The 36-year-old, who needed eight stitches in a cut above his right eye, insisted he had not felt under pressure during 12 punishing rounds. “I felt very comfortable,” Golovkin said. “I think we controlled the fight. BERLIN - Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge set a new marathon world record in Berlin on Sunday, smashing the previous best as he clocked 2hr 1min 39sec. The 33-year-old Olympic champion, aided by a string of pacemakers through to 25km of the 42.195km race, took 1min 18sec off the previous best set four years ago by Dennis Kimetto. It was the largest single improvement on the marathon world record since Derek Clayton improved the mark by 2:23 in 1967. “My only words are ‘Thank you!’,” said Kipchoge, who sprinted into the lead after 100 metres and never let up. “I was prepared to run my own
race early so I wasn’t surprised to be alone. I have trained so well for this race and have full trust in the programmes of my coach. I am just so incredibly happy to have finally run the world record as I never stopped having belief in myself.” Acclaimed as the greatest marathon runner of the modern era, Kipchoge has dominated marathon racing since making his debut in Hamburg in 2013 after a successful track career that saw him win world gold and silver (2003, 2007) in the 5000m and Olympic silver and bronze (2008, 2004) over the same distance. He has notched up 10 wins from the 11 marathons he has raced, winning three times not only in Berlin
but also London, with victories in Rio for Olympic gold as well as in Hamburg, Rotterdam and Chicago. In the German capital on Sunday, Kipchoge had just a handful of pacemakers for company from the early stages of the race. The Kenyan passed through five kilometres in 14:24 and 10 kilometres in 29:21. But shortly after 15 kilometres, which was reached in 43:38, two of the three pacemakers were unable to continue and withdrew from the race. The final pacemaker, Josphat Boit, led Kipchoge through the half-way point in 1:01:06 before dropping out at 25 kilometres, covered in 1:12:24. (afp)

This has been a glorious European era for Real, who are targeting becoming the first club to win four in a row since they won the trophy in each of its first five seasons, between 1956 and 1960. The men who have marked that era have gone, with Zinedine Zidane resigning and Cristiano Ronaldo moving to Juventus, but Madrid remain a formidable force. “After three in a row, why not the fourth? You always have to dream, aspire to achieve things and believe in the team,” skipper Sergio Ramos said after last month’s group-stage draw in Monaco. In Liverpool, Ramos is seen as the villain who forced Mohamed Salah off injured in last season’s final. Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic made history on Saturday, scoring his 500th career goal in stunning fashion, but it wasn’t enough to lift the Los Angeles Galaxy to a win over Toronto FC. The 36-year-old Ibrahimovic has always had a flair for the dramatic and he did just that in becoming the third active footballer to reach the milestone for club and country, joining Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. The six-foot-five (1.95 metre) Ibrahimovic delivered a perfectlytimed roundhouse kick in the 43th minute that fooled goalkeeper Alex Bono for his 17th goal of the season. The goal cut the deficit to 3-1 and sparked a three-goal Galaxy rally, but the defending MLS champions held
on to win 5-3 in front of a crowd of 30,700 at BMO Field in Toronto. “I am happy for Toronto because they will be remembered as my 500th victim,” said Ibrahimovic. Alvarez ready for rematch after Golovkin dethroned
LAS VEGAS - Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is eyeing a trilogy with Gennady Golovkin after ending the middleweight champion’s unbeaten reign here Saturday.
Mexican star Alvarez produced a performance of guts and resilience to inflict the first defeat of Golovkin’s career with a majority decision at the T-Mobile Arena. BERLIN - Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge set a new marathon world record in Berlin on Sunday, smashing the previous best as he clocked 2hr 1min 39sec. The 33-year-old Olympic champion, aided by a string of pacemakers through to 25km of the 42.195km race, took 1min 18sec off the previous best set four years ago by Dennis Kimetto. It was the largest single improvement on the marathon world record since Derek Clayton improved the mark by 2:23 in 1967. “My only words are ‘Thank you!’,” said Kipchoge, who sprinted into the lead after 100 metres and never let up. “I was prepared to run my own
race early so I wasn’t surprised to be alone. I have trained so well for this race and have full trust in the programmes of my coach. I am just so incredibly happy to have finally run the world record as I never stopped having belief in myself.” Acclaimed as the greatest marathon runner of the modern era, Kipchoge has dominated marathon racing since making his debut in Hamburg in 2013 after a successful track career that saw him win world gold and silver (2003, 2007) in the 5000m and Olympic silver and bronze (2008, 2004) over the same distance. He has notched up 10 wins from the 11 marathons he has raced, winning three times not only in Berlin
but also London, with victories in Rio for Olympic gold as well as in Hamburg, Rotterdam and Chicago. In the German capital on Sunday, Kipchoge had just a handful of pacemakers for company from the early stages of the race. The Kenyan passed through five kilometres in 14:24 and 10 kilometres in 29:21. But shortly after 15 kilometres, which was reached in 43:38, two of the three pacemakers were unable to continue and withdrew from the race. The final pacemaker, Josphat Boit, led Kipchoge through the half-way point in 1:01:06 before dropping out at 25 kilometres, covered in 1:12:24. (afp)

Spanish farmers go nuts for almonds as global demand booms
SANTA CRUZ - Surging worldwide demand for almonds is pushing Spanish farmers to replace traditional wheat and sunflower fields with almond orchards, transforming the landscape in the south of the country.
Almonds, thanks to their well-advertised health benefits, are enjoying global demand as snacks or in derivative forms like almond milk and almond flour, used as dairy or wheat alternatives. In the Guadalquivir valley in the parched southern region of Andalusia “the landscape has changed so much in recent years that wild boar now come down from the hills to eat almonds”, said agronomist Curro Lopez, 50, an expert on almond farming with Spanish agriculture machinery firm Agrosan. During the harvest, which in Santa Cruz near Cordoba began at the end of August, large nets are laid on the ground to collect almonds which are then shaken off the wispy branches of the trees by a machine in just a few seconds. Spain is on track to harvest over 61,000 tonnes of almonds during the 2018-19 season, a record amount and a 15-percent rise over the previous season, according to estimates from a national producers’ association. Spain is the world’s third biggest almond producer behind Australia, and the United States which is the world’s top producer by a huge margin. California alone accounts for 80 percent of the world’s supply of almonds, according to its powerful almond board, which tirelessly promotes the benefits of the nut as a source of protein and healthy fats. Spain, which uses almonds in many traditional

desserts such as nougats, continues to import huge quantities of almonds from California despite being a major producer of the nut itself.

“When we think that it was Spanish missionaries who brought almonds to the United States” in the 18th century, said Jose Millan, as he supervised the harvesting of almonds from his family’s land in Santa Cruz. The 61-year-old was one of the first to introduce intensive almond farming to Andalusia a decade ago. Today, 62 hectares (150 acres) out of the family’s 650 hectares of land are dedicated to the crop. His neighbours have followed his example. While almond trees were largely absent from the Andalusian countryside, today irrigated almond orchards can be found everywhere in the region. Forsaking sunflowers or wheat, farmers are betting on almond trees which can easily complement olive tree harvesting since the same tree “shaker” machines can be used on both crops. “World almond production doubled in the last 10-12 years, going from 600,000 tonnes to 1.2 million tonnes, and consumption has increased at the same rhythm,” said Cristobal Perez, who runs a factory that opened recently near Cordoba which transforms almonds into by-products. Farmers have been encouraged to grow almonds due to rising prices which went from three euros ($3.5) per kilo (2.2 pounds) to nine euros per kilo four to five years ago, he said. At least 13 people have been killed and eight are still missing after a ferry caught fire and sank in central Indonesia, an official said Saturday. The boat was believed to be carrying nearly 150 passengers off the coast of Sulawesi province on Friday when the blaze started. High waves hampered initial rescue efforts but 126 people had been saved by Saturday afternoon. A search and rescue operation is underway for remaining passengers. “Based on reports from the passengers’ families there are still some people missing,” transport ministry spokesman Wisnu Wardana told AFP. Among the deaths were two toddlers. Most of the rescued passengers were found wearing life jackets. The cause of the accident was unclear. The Indonesian archipelago of more than 17,000 islands is heavily reliant on boat transport, but safety standards are often ignored and fatal maritime accidents are common. In June, more than 160 people died when a ferry sank in Lake Toba, a popular tourist attraction in western Indonesia. The boat was believed to be operating illegally without a passenger manifest and with a limited number of life jackets on board. JAKARTA — An Indonesian court sentenced an Islamic militant on Thursday to 11 years in prison after finding him guilty of conducting training in preparation for a terrorist attack. Wawan Kurniawan was arrested along with four other militants last October by the anti-terror squad in Pekanbaru, the capital of Riau province. Judge Suhartono, who presided over the trial at West Jakarta District Court, said Wawan had been proven guilty under the anti-terror law. Wawan, 43, was the local leader of Jemaah Anshorut Daulah, an Indonesian militant network affiliated with the Islamic State group that has been implicated in attacks in the country. Wawan was accused of having provoked a riot in May at a high-security police detention center in which six officers were killed by Islamic inmates who took control of part of the prison near Indonesia’s capital. One militant was also killed. A week later, four sword-wielding men who allegedly belonged to Jemaah Anshorut Daulah attacked a police headquarters in Pekanbaru and were fatally shot by police. A fifth man who drove their vehicle was arrested while trying to escape. One officer died and two others were injured. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement carried by its Aamaq news agency. Prosecutors had sought a 13-year jail sentence for Wawan, but the panel of judges said they decided to be lenient because of his politeness during the trial and because he had never been sentenced in a criminal case before. FRANKFURT — The European Central Bank pushed forward Thursday with its plan to gradually phase out its monetary stimulus, saying it is confident in the region’s growth. But its president, Mario Draghi, warned that the United States’ trade dispute with several major powers has become a key economic concern. The chief monetary authority for the 19 countries that use the euro confirmed Thursday that its bond-buying stimulus would be cut to 15 billion euros ($17.4 billion) a month from 30 billion euros after September. The decision was widely expected after being mapped out in detail at the bank’s June 14 meeting. The ECB set out its plans to halt the stimulus in December and postpone any interest rate increase until well after that. Analysts do not expect a rate hike until the second half of 2019 at the earliest. Draghi said at a post-decision news conference that the eurozone was seeing “an on-going, broad-based expansion.” Trouble in markets in emerging markets like Argentina and Turkey “so far does not show any sign of spillover,” he said. Asked about concerns that Italy’s new populist government will break with Europe’s rules on public spending and rekindle a debt crisis in the region, he said that top officials had given assurances they would respect the rules, but that there had also been conflicting statements and that the actual budget decisions would be what counts. “Words have changed many times,” he said. “We are waiting for facts.” For now, the questions over Italy do not seem to be affecting other

Sweet and Mellow Taste of Jaje Cerorot
The Hindu community in Bali which always preserves its ancestral culture has various unique and delicious traditional cakes or jaje. There is jaje purely the result of creative process of the community, while the others are the result of acculturation with other regional cultures or even that of other countries. Whatever the cake is, it remains to be preserved amidst of Balinese society until now. Even, its existence is always associated with ceremonial activities and Hindu ritual on the Island of the Gods. For example, one of them is jaje cerorot. Optionally, it is often named the jaje blukbuk, usually served when the Hindu community is carrying out a wedding ceremony in the process of proposing. Jaje cerorot is accompanied with a pillow-like cake. In Bali, this cake belongs to snack made from local (Balinese) rice flour combined with brown sugar and salt. On that account, it has a brownish red color. Cerorot is shaped with young coconut leaf wrap resembling a cone. For children, this cake is often referred to as the trumpet cake because the wrap is like a trumpet. There is a special technique for eating this cake. If people do not know, they will open the pin (bamboo pin to button the wrap) and then eat the soft and creamy cake. For those who already know the technique of eating it will push on the tip at the lower end of the young coconut leaf pointing to the top, so that the content of the cake appears. Just press and adjust how long we are able to chew it. If you eat a little, then push it a little too, and if you can eat at once, then push it full. Once again, to take out the content fully, push
the pointed end of the wrapper so that the content comes out. There is no need to open the curd of the wrap when eating the cake. Lately, this cake is usually used for refreshment served for guests to accompany the drinks like coffee or tea. It is usually easy to get as widely sold in traditional markets and cake shops. Unlike before, if there was no wedding ceremony, this was not made. Unfortunately, this sweet tasting cake can only last for one day. The ingredients used to make the jaje cerorot are local rice, brown sugar and salt (to taste). First of all, the rice is washed clean, and then soaked overnight. After that, resume and make it into flour. In the past, the making of flour in the traditional way was pounded with pestle in the mortar. Then, sieve the flour. This traditionally made flour makes the cake taste better when compared to flour made by factory. Brown sugar is then liquefied with hot water and then filtered as well. Next, add flour into the cold brown sugar liquid with the addition of enough salt. To prepare the wrap, make the packaging from young coconut leaf. Remove the stick of the leaf, fold at one of the ends and then twist circularly resembling a cone. After the coconut leaf wrap has been made, the mixture is poured into the wrapper. Be careful, do not let it be full because when steamed it can melt and fall. Finally, steam them until cooked (for approximately 20 minutes). To check whether the cake is already cooked, insert a palm stick into the steamed dough. If the dough is not sticky when being pulled, it means the cake is already cooked. If it has been cooked, take out the cake and it is ready to be served. (kmb)

Old Books of Gedong Kirtya Collection to Be Restored
In addition to storing thousands of titles of lontars or palm-leaf manuscripts, Gedong Kirtya Singaraja has a collection of old books by writers both from Bali and the Netherlands. The book was written in 1950 while some others were at the end of the 19th century. As a result, condition of the books is fragile and even very difficult to be read. For this situation, the Buleleng district government will soon restore the old books stored in the Gedong Kirtya. Head of the Buleleng Culture Agency, Gede Komang, said last week that the books were very valuable as reference materials. At present, his agency is carrying out makeshift maintenance. This happens because until now there is no Culture Agency staff who understands about the good maintenance mechanism of the book collections. “Most of the books have been damaged and are very difficult to be read because they have been damaged,” he said. According to him, his agency has now coordinated with the Buleleng Archives and Library Office and the Bali Provincial Archives Office. The results of the coordination were responded positively. The Culture Agency is suggested to submit a restoration proposal to the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia (ANRI). Regarding the cost
of the book restoration is estimated to reach approximately IDR 25 million. His agency then submitted a proposal to the ANRI, so that the book collections in Gedong Kirtya can be restored properly. Before starting to restore, Gede Komang is now recording the books to be restored. Australia aged care scandals sparks national probe
Alleged to have caused sea turtles to die
NEGARA - Lately, a number of turtles were found dead and stranded on the coast of Jembrana. In addition to turtles, within the past two months bottlenose dolphins were found getting stranded on the coast of Perancak. The latest dead turtles were found on the Pekutatan Beach and tied to a rope on Friday (Sep. 14). Coordinator of the Kurma Asih Turtle Conservation Group (KPP) of Perancak, I Wayan Anom Astika Jaya, claimed to be concerned about this condition. He hoped that no more turtles will die. According to Anom, there should be related parties following it up. Together with other turtle conservationists, he hoped that no more turtles will die because of natural factors or intentional factors (hunted) by humans. Having got involved in turtle conservation for decades in Jembrana, the phenomenon on the death of sea turtles in the sea is the first time to happen. Moreover, the finding interval of one dead turtle and another is close. So far, his conservation agency and several other KPPs in Jembrana continue to strive to preserve turtles. Thus, the turtle population continues to grow. Currently, all types of turtles are in the category of protected animals. Only a few of the hundreds of turtles (sea turtles) released into the sea can survive. A member of Walhi (Friends of the Earth) of Bali Chapter, Ngurah Karyadi, stated on Saturday (Sep. 15) the death
of a number of sea turtles and dolphins is alleged to have something to do with the climatic changes and uncertainty due to global warming. On this matter, various global agreements have been made, but they are not working because business or economy must grow. Moreover, the US has delayed or canceled the emission reduction agreement or the Kyoto Protocol, for example,” said Ngurah Karyadi. gan and Nusa Penida can be well arranged,” said the man familiarly addressed as Cok Ace. According to Cok Ace, it requires an assertiveness to organize tourism in Lembongan. If there is indeed no regulation that governs, the development must be stopped so that tourism development does not violate conservation area or the green belt. “If there is no regulation, it does not necessarily mean it is totally free,” explained the deputy governor who is also a tourism figure. Cok Ace did not deny if the government and regulations produced so far are always late compared to the private sector. On that account, the Klungkung district government is specifically asked to start controlling the permits issued. “Temporarily, the issuance of permits should be stopped first especially in the regions that we need to protect and conserve,” he said. He added that tourism development is not merely seen from the trend or interest of tourists coming to Lembongan and Bali in general.
However, it must also consider the strength or carrying capacity. If tourism is analogized to a cup of coffee having been delicious, the taste of coffee will disappear if continuing to be filled with water. “Bali must feature its culture. To what extent we can say that this culture remains harmonious. Do not let be visited by too many tourists, especially those belonging to cheap tourism or mass tourism. Do not damage or affect Balinese culture,” he explained. Previously, Cok Ace already gathered the tourism stakeholders in Bali as a first measure to organize tourism on the Island of the Gods in accordance with the vision of Nangun Sat Kerthi Loka Bali. Some of the problems captured in the meeting are related to cleanliness, congestion to tourism inequality. These problems will be overcome by making a Bali grand design in the future. “We start from the beginning. We begin to cluster the characteristics of each region. Thus, no region will duplicate other regions
because the development of Bali is now in single governance. All of them are controlled, synergized and coordinated so that no district will works on their own,” he explained. Each district and municipality, continued Cok Ace, actually has an extraordinary character. Karangasem, for example, is closely associated with spiritual tourism as supported by the existence of the universal temples such as the Andakasa, Lempuyang, and Besakih Temple. In the northern region can be developed conservation tourism in the presence of lakes. Then, Tabanan can work on agro-tourism; Gianyar works on the arts and serves as cultural center, and southern Bali can be focused on hospitality. “Travelers can stay in Badung while seeing the beauty of Karangasem, the arts in Gianyar. HONG KONG - Typhoon Mangkhut rocked Hong Kong before striking mainland China on Sunday, injuring scores and sending skyscrapers swaying, after killing at least 49 people in the Philippines and ripping a swathe of destruction through its agricultural heartland.
The world’s biggest storm this year left large expanses in the north of the main Philippine island of Luzon underwater as fierce winds tore trees from the ground and rain unleashed dozens of landslides. It made landfall on the coast of Jiangmen city, in southern China’s Guangdong province, Sunday evening after battering Hong Kong. Hong Kong weather authorities issued their maximum alert for the storm, which hit the city with gusts of more than 230 kilometres per hour (142 mph) and left over 100 injured, according to government figures. As the storm passed south of Hong Kong, trees were snapped in half and roads blocked, while some windows in tower blocks were smashed and skyscrapers swayed, as they are designed to do in intense gales. The Philippines was just beginning to count the cost of the typhoon which hit northern Luzon on Saturday, and the death toll jumped to 49 on Sunday evening as more landslide victims were discovered. In the town of Baggao the typhoon demolished houses, tore off roofs and downed power lines. Some roads were cut off by landslides and many remained submerged.
Farms across northern Luzon, which produces much of the nation’s rice and corn, were sitting under muddy floodwater, their crops ruined just a month before harvest. “We’re already poor and then this happened to us. We have lost hope,” 40-year-old Mary Anne Baril, whose corn and rice crops were spoilt, told AFP. “We have no other means to survive,” she said tearfully. - Flooding in Hong Kong and Macau An average of 20 typhoons and storms lash the Philippines each year, killing hundreds of people. The latest victims were mostly people who died in landslides, including a family of four. In addition to those killed in the Philippines, a woman was swept out to sea in Taiwan. The Philippines’ deadliest storm on record is Super Typhoon Haiyan, which left more than 7,350 people dead or missing across the central part of the country in November 2013. In Hong Kong, waters surged in the famous Victoria Harbour and coastal fishing villages, from which
hundreds of residents were evacuated to storm shelters. Some roads were waist-deep in water with parts of the city cut off by floods and fallen trees. In the fishing village of Tai O, where many people live in stilt houses built over the sea, some desperately tried to bail out their inundated homes. “Floodwater is rushing into my home but I’m continuously shovelling the water out. It’s a race against time,” resident Lau King-cheung told AFP by phone. The government warned people to stay indoors but some ventured out, heading to the coast to take photos. A couple with a child were seen by an AFP reporter taking pictures on a pier known as a popular Instagram spot as waves surged and almost submerged it. SYDNEY - Australia will launch a national inquiry into its scandal-plagued aged care sector, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said Sunday, following numerous reports of abuse, neglect and mismanagement. The announcement comes a year after a state-run dementia nursing home in South Australia state was shut when an investigation revealed horrific mistreatment of elderly residents over a 10-year period. Since that scandal, the health department has closed almost one aged care service each month, while a growing number are failing to meet standards, Morrison said in a statement. “Incidences of older people being hurt by failures of care simply cannot be explained or excused,” he added. “We must be assured about how widespread these cases are... there clearly remains areas of concern with regard to the quality and safety of aged care services.” The inquiry will probe profit and non-for-profit organisations, and also look at the care given to younger Australians with disabilities living in such facilities. There has been a 177 percent leap in the number of aged-care homes where a “serious risk” to residents were identified in the 2017-18 financial year, according to government data released to Sydney’s Sunday Telegraph. The figures also show a 292
percent increase in the number of facilities that were falling significantly short of government regulations. The prime minister said the royal commission would be critical in guiding how Australia copes with caring for its growing elderly population. Demand for services is expected to surge as the “baby boomer” generation born after World War II swells the ranks of retirees. Canberra funding for aged care is already at record levels, reaching Aus$18.6 billion ($13.3 billion) in 2017-18. The government expects it to grow in the next five years by a further Aus$5 billion. Around one in seven Australians are aged 65 and above, according to 2017 government data, with the proportion of elderly people tipped to reach 22 percent of the population by 2057. A damning 146-page report released in February catalogued numerous complaints of abuse and neglect at aged care facilities. Some of the worst cases raised included a 70-year-old attacked and killed by another elderly resident, the use of restraints, overdosing of patients and the indecent assault of a 99-year-old woman by a male carer. Surprising eSwatini (Swaziland): culture, safari and vast, unspoilt landscapes SWAZILAND - Swaziland is one of those countries which few people can actually place on the map. And just as few people can tell you that it’s actually no longer called Swaziland at all: King Mswati III changed the name of the country to eSwatini in April this year. I arrived here as ignorant as anyone. I’d flown from London to Johannesburg with South African Airways, then driven four hours – much of it through the Kruger National Park – to the border with Swaziland. There were ostrich and rhino wandering loose outside the fuel station, which was the first sign of things to come. It is unusual these days to arrive in a country with no preconceptions. The barrage of travel bloggers, glossy magazines, and documentaries on TV ensures that there are very few places left on Earth that we know nothing about at all. For me at least, Swaziland was one of them. I expected to learn something new; I didn’t realise I’d completely be blown away. History of Swaziland
The best guess is that Swaziland has been inhabited for the past 200,000 years. The earliest people to live here were hunter-gatherers, and archeological excavations at the Ngwenya Mine – the oldest mine site in the world – show that it was already in use 43,000 years ago. I passed through the Malolotje Wildlife Reserve, then continued on foot to the mouth of a cave. Early man would have sat here and chipped away at the red ochre, using it not only for rock paintings but for cosmetic purposes as well.

The Swazis have unparalleled pride in their national culture, and have preserved it remarkably well in spite of globalisation. The annual Incwala Festival and Umhlanga Reed Dance still draw participants from across the country, who perform before Swaziland’s revered king and queen mother. Wherever I went, there was dancing, in city stadiums and in traditional villages. Men and women typically dance, sing, and drum in single sex groups, demonstrating to all those who watch their energy and strength. It’s an incredibly creative culture. You only have to look at the age old designs of thatched huts, national costumes, and the handicrafts which people produce. Swaziland is famed for its glass blowing and its candle making. The
textiles and jewellery are exquisite, too. Wildlife
The one thing I really didn’t expect to see was a high concentration of wildlife: there’s a reason that people go on safari in South Africa, Kenya, or Tanzania. But remarkably, Swaziland’s national parks are rich in big game, including a wonderfully high population of black rhino. I drove out at dusk through the Mkhaya Game Reserve, following jeep tracks through the bush. The hippos wallowed in the pools, the heads of giraffe poked out above the trees. All of a sudden, the guide slammed on the brakes. In front of us, right in the road, were rhino. They seemed totally oblivious to the fact that we were there, carried on eating, then after a short while turned, pointing their bottoms towards us, and casually wandered off. My heart was in my mouth – I’d never seen one, let alone two, black rhino that close – but in Mkhaya, it seems, such sightings are everyday occurrences. Activities
With vast, unspoilt landscapes and a low population density, large parts of Swaziland are a wilderness ripe for exploration. It’s almost always possible to get out and about on foot and by 4×4, but sometimes the environment calls for a little more excitement. Swaziland’s first and only canopy tour is in the Malolotje Nature Reserve. Strung from cliff to cliff, and with a pristine forest below, are numerous zip lines and also a wooden rope bridge. I’m not afraid of heights but I do like being in control, so stepping off a platform and trusting that a harness would hold me required great determination. The first ride was terrifying, the second less so, and by the time I hit the third and fourth runs, I was zipping along with glee.
Phophonyane Eco Lodge is hidden in mountain forest, a short distance away from the waterfall which gives it its name. Between the running streams and ponds nestle beehive huts and safari tents. Narina trogon flap in the trees, and the sound of the red duiker whistling carries on the wind. (net)

Every day, there are 45 boats operating from 07:30 am to 17:00 transporting guests to Nusa Penida. Thousands of visitors per day come to Nusa Penida. Local people’s livelihood originally relied on raising cattle, cultivating corn and cassava with harvest made once a year and seaweed cultivation with harvest of every 30 days has shifted to be tourism workers and business players. “I am really proud because almost 75 percent of the accommodation services in Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan are established by local natives, especially beginner investors from Nusa Penida,” he said. This owner of sea transportation originally had one boat, but now has grown to more than two boats, while some others even have more than seven boats. They are mostly owned by the natives to Nusa Penida region. Besides, there are land transportation entrepreneurs from various types of vehicles. In the first Nusa Penida Festival, the Klungkung government teamed up with travel agencies belonging
to the members of the Association of Indonesia Tour and Travel Agency (ASITA) invited to make site inspection to Nusa Penida. Ultimately, they saw directly the tourism potential to be developed both as investors and operators of tour packages that can be marketed to various countries. Besides, the people of Nusa Penida begin to move together and promote through social media such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and others. They are very enthusiastic in welcoming the tourism development in Nusa Penida. Some of them provide snorkeling, boats, land transportation, accommodations and tour packages. “This togetherness movement makes the Islands of Nusa Penida get the world’s attention for the beauty of both land and underwater panorama,” said Tunggu who is also a member of the ASITA Bali. Now, Klungkung district relies heavily on revenue in the field of tourism, both in the Klungkung mainland and the three sister islands in Nusa Penida namely, Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan. Many attractions have been very well known in Nusa Penida such as the Atuh Beach, known as Raja Lima Beach, Teletubbies Hill, Giri Putri Cave, Kelingking Beach, Angel Billabong, Pasih Uug Beach as well as Crystal Bay Beach. The underwater panorama having been very famous from ancient times is diving sport. Meanwhile, the favorite sites for snorkeling are Manta Point, Crystal Bay Point, Gamat Bay Point, Toyapakeh Wall Point, Buda Point Statue, Mangrove Point, GT Point and Buyuk Point. Problems behind the tourism growth
DENPASAR - Amid the gradual tourism development, Nusa Penida experiences a number of problems. One of them is the iconic seaweed farming having been slowly marginalized. The newly growing business is related to motorcycle taxi, rent a car, homestay and tour guiding. A resident of Nusa Penida, Putu Krisna, 22, stated that two years ago his grandmother was still doing seaweed cultivation on the Nyuh Beach. Tourism was then developing. Many guests arrived by boat docking at Nyuh hamlet. In the long run, the local seaweed farmers began to decrease and even have left the profession at this time. Reduced seaweed farmers also happen due to unavailability of seaweed seedlings. Besides, the seaweed does not want to live after the transplantation. He alleged it happens due to the influence of diesel from the docking boat. “So, on average the farmers at Nyuh hamlet have returned to their homes,” said this graduate of Electrical Engineering. According to Krisna, the community did not automatically leave their previous livelihood. Some people remain to pursue their previous profession as farmers and breeders. “In the morning, they work as tour guide while in the afternoon they return to raise cattle,” said this young man operating the website Penidago.com. Nusa Penida has three ports, namely at Nyuh hamlet, Sampalan and Buyuk. In the three coastal areas, seaweed farmers only exist in Nyuh hamlet. “Other regions have no seaweed farmers, but those in the eastern area of Sampalan remains active in seaweed cultivation,” said Krisna.
This member of the ASITA Bali, who is also the resident of Nusa Penida, Ketut Tunggu, said that Klungkung has many tourism issues and they must be sought after a solution immediately. A number of issues expressed include the ownership status of tourism objects that are still owned by individuals. This must be found a middle way. By doing so, the management is not partial but becomes an integral part and entirely managed by the regional government. There is no special arrangement for the well known tourist objects both domestically and internationally. “This well-known object should not recede due to lacking of innovation and neat arrangement reflecting the seven charms or sapta pesona. Here, a professional management body is needed to make this tourist object reflect the charms,” he said. According to him, breakthroughs and coordination with related institutions such as transportation and traffic agency are still lacking. This causes a congestion point that should not occur. Public awareness of tourism culture is also lacking as seen from many tourism services remaining to have not implemented standardization or competence in the tourism field. In addition, tourism organizations are lacking in Klungkung district. So, it is very difficult to coordinate and develop relevant parties. Tourists do not feel comfortable when going to cross from the ports in Bali mainland, especially during high tides and huge waves. “They have to get wet and fight for a boat ride. This condition is very unsafe for children and elder people. This is why, on average, the tourists visiting Nusa Penida Island are young people,” he concluded. (kmb42)

DENPASAR - Some 150 countries take part in World Cleanup Day every year with Indonesia having joined for the first time this year. In Bali, cleanups were held on dozens of beaches, temples and tributaries in all nine district and municipality as well as on the lakes of the island. The cleanup on Mertasari Beach Sanur officially began at 07:00 with the Deputy Governor of Bali, Tjok Oka Artha Ardhana Sukawati on Saturday (Sep. 15) opening the event.
People from all walks of life thronged Mertasari Beach armed with their own cleanup tools such as brooms, trach bins and sacks to collect garbage. Acting Head of the Bali Environment Agency, Luh Ayu Aryani, said that World Cleanup Day in Bali was indeed centered on Mertasari Beach, Sanur with the City of Denpasar doing cleanups on Biaung Beach and Muara Tangtu Beach. “We have involved the Indonesian Military and National Police (TNI and Polri), provincial and Denpasar municipal agencies, vertical agencies, businesses, environmental activists, and local communities with a total of about 2,500 participants”, she said. Aryani added that cleanups were also carried out on Kuta Beach, Jerman Beach, Jimbaran Beach, Geger Beach, Petitenget Beach, Berawa Beach and Bagus Agrotourism in Badung district. Then, Campuhan Ubud, Purnama Beach, Siyut Beach and Saba Beach in Gianyar; Lepang Beach and Jumpai Beach in Klungkung; Soka Beach in Tabanan; Yeh Kuning Beach in Jembrana; Pemuteran Beach, Lovina Beach and Lake Buyan in Buleleng, Batur Temple and surrounding areas in Bangli as well as Cinta Beach and Kerta Mandala village in Karangasem. In addition to increasing awareness about the problem of garbage in Bali, World Cleanup Day is also expected to become a mass movement. “It is meant to make Bali green, beautiful, clean
and free of rampant garbage by promoting values and love for a sustainable environment. It is also meant to step up to the challenge to show the world that Bali is a cohesive society that cares for the environment”, explained Head of the Bali Forestry Service. Aryiani added that data from 2014 shows that Bali produces about 10,000 cubic meters of garbage per day, most of which is simply tossed into landfills. The general public still needs to become aware of the need to sort their garbage at the household level and to apply the 3Rs (Reduce, reuse, recycle). When interviewed separately, Deputy Governor of Bali, familiarly addressed as Cok Ace, said the sea is currently heavily polluted with plastic which is extremely hazardous to the marine ecosystem and that though many may not be aware, this also affect humans on land. “Coral reefs damages by plastic for example means there are less fish and also makes the coastline more vulnerable to abrasion. Fishermen are the first to feel this effect as their livelihood depends on the sea”, he said. Cok Ace added that he hopes the garbage cleanup movement can help control coastal and marine pollution by reducing the amount of plastic waste that goes out to sea as well as managing and protecting the environment in accordance with the Balinese people’s life based on the philosophy known as the sad kertih or six natural harmonies, consisting of atma kertih (purifying the soul), danu kertih (preserving springs on mainland), wana kertih (preserving forests), segara kertih (preserving the ocean), jana kertih (maintaining individual quality), and jagat kertih (maintaining social relationship). Beach cleanups he said are a form of segara kertih. “We must not the beauty of the sea become tarnished by the amount of garbage scattered on the beaches. Hopefully this cleanup activity is not just done ceremoniously but becomes a grounded and effective movement to overcome the threat that garbage poses to Bali”, he concluded. (kmb32)
DENPASAR - Cigarette butts were the most common type of garbage collected during World Cleanup Day on Mertasari Beach, Sanur, on Saturday (Sep. 15). Despite their size, cigarette butts should not be seen as benign. Even a small thing in large enough number has the potential for have a big negative impact on the environment. “The most hazardous type of garbage is cigarettes butt (filters) as people sometimes don’t think about where they are throwing them away and they are very hard to pick up afterwards”, explained Putu Evie Suyadnyani from Trash Hero Kertalangu (Denpasar Region) during World Cleanup Day. Small garbage like cigarette butts are often overlooked during garbage cleanups however -not only do they not biodegrade very well, but they also contain nicotine toxins that interfere with the ecosystem. “People can smoke, but they should be aware of the people around them and where they are throwing their cigarette butts”, she said. Plastic straws, cups, candy wrappers and bottle caps are also common culprits. The World Cleanup Day activity in Bali entitled “Suksma Bali” (literally, thanks Bali) importantly invites people to be aware and con-
cerned about garbage. Garbage is not just a problem in Bali or Indonesia but in the whole world. Trash Hero branches all over the world have been instrumental in the success of World Cleanup Day. “So, instead of pointing fingers we are working together to solve this problem. We want the public to care and be aware that we need to start with ourselves – especially at home where we can sort our garbage and educate youngsters”, explained Elvie. Plastic garbage has become a particularly serious problem that disrupts the ecosystem and marine biota and thus human health as well. People all over the world can become aware that that we need to take action now. Trash Hero not only holds routine cleanup activities but also promotes going on plastic “diets” (not using plastic). “We also go to schools to provide education about plastic reduction and run plastic waste reduction programs encouraging people and businesses to reduce their use of plastic straws, plastic bags, and all types of disposable plastic. “This includes campaigning to have people always carry a drinking bottle with them and to refill it rather than buying bottled water”, she added. Most of the fatalities from Florence, which made landfall Friday as a Category 1 hurricane, have occurred in North Carolina, where officials confirmed eight victims.
