LOS ANGELES — The fantasy series “Game of Thrones” was the big winner Saturday at the creative arts Emmy Awards. The HBO saga received a leading six trophies at the ceremony that recognizes technical and other achievements. Best special visual effects and best costumes for a series were among the trophies claimed by “Game of Thrones.”

Others honored at the ceremony were four TV series guest stars, including Kathy Bates for CBS’ “Two and a Half Men” and Jimmy Fallon as host of NBC’s “Saturday Night Live.”

Bates has a shot at another trophy, best drama actress for “Harry’s Law,” her canceled NBC series, at the prime-time Emmy ceremony to air Sept. 23. Earlier this week, she said she was recovering from a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with breast cancer two months ago. She did not accept Saturday’s award in person. On the drama side, Emmys went to Jeremy Davies for his guest appearance on FX’s “Justified” and Martha Plimpton for her turn on CBS’ “The Good Wife.”

Programs with multipleaward bragging rights included Discovery Channel’s “Frozen Planet,” ‘’Great Expectations” on PBS’ “Masterpiece” showcase and “Saturday Night Live,” each of which earned four Emmys.

History’s “Hatfields & McCoys,” HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire” and the 65th annual Tony Awards on CBS each nabbed three awards.

Among networks, HBO earned a leading 17 creative arts Emmys, followed by CBS with 13 and PBS with 11. Discovery received six awards, NBC got five and ABC and the Cartoon Network won four each. Fox won two trophies. Emmys in 26 categories including acting, writing and directing will be presented at the upcoming ceremony, which will air live on ABC at 8 p.m. EDT next Sunday.

NEW YORK — Lady Gaga launched her debut perfume while being inside a giant-sized perfume bottle. The avant garde pop star was in a large bottle — a replica of her “Fame” fragrance — appearing in the transparent glass where attendees took photos and watched the singer get a tattoo on her neck.

The entertainer entered the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum on New York’s Upper East Side on Thursday night on top of a convertible. She posed for pictures and interacted with some fans.

Inside, she laid in the bottle in a sparkly top, black skirt and red wig. Then she took off some clothing and a wig — now appearing in lingerie, including a thong — and began receiving a tattoo of the back of her neck (she shaved the bottom half of the back of her head this week).

Gaga applied makeup and played on an iPad inside the bottle, where she was joined by four others. Edith Piaf played in background, as did David Bowie’s “Fame” and various songs that featured Kanye West. She got her tattoo — and danced in her seat — as West’s latest hit

“Mercy” blasted in the background.

The masquerade black tie event featured a few hundred people, mostly dressed with eye masks and headgear.

Celebrity attendees included Yoko Ono, Marc Jacobs, Paris Hilton, Michael Strahan, Jason Wu and Lindsay Lohan, who arrived late for the event. Gaga also

debuted a short film called “Lady Gaga Film” for the fragrance in collaboration with director Steven Klein.

Bali News Drought in East Buleleng

Residents spend much money to purchase water Singaraja (Bali Post)—

Some residents at several villages in East Buleleng such as at Pacung, Tembok, Sambirenteng and surrounding villages are apparently destined to have a different fate from people in other parts of Bali. Aside from still struggling with poverty, they should also spend a lot of money to purchase water every day in dry season.

At Pacung village, Tejakula subdistrict, a total of some 450 families are unable to enjoy clean water for decades.

In rainy season, they usually hold water in a large enough storage. When entering dry season, the rainwater is then used for drinking and cooking.

Unexpectedly, the dry season in 2012 is in fact quite long. Rainwater in the storage has run out before dry season comes to an end. Therefore, the village has to face a kind of unresolved dilemma. If wishing to drink water, the residents are forced to seek water to sources on the beach. Since more time is used to find water to location of about one to two kilometers, then they finally are unable to work as laborer or work in the garden maximally.

As a result, their income drops and they even have no income at all.

If they insist on working as a construction worker or working in the garden to get money, then they must be willing to purchase water usually sold by taxi motor at around IDR 5,000 per jerry can containing about 20 liters. With such condition, people are still unable to have saving because their money has been spent to purchase water.

The dilemma was recognized by Headman of Pacung, Made Yasa. According to him, the majority of residents who were poor and relying on income as a construction worker and farmer could spend nearly IDR 1 million per month. According to estimation obtained from the Municipality Waterworks (PDAM), every resident needed as much as 125 liters of water every day for drinking, bathing, washing and cooking. Such 125 liters were approximately equivalent to 6 jerry cans. If the price was IDR 5,000 per jerry can, so people had to spend around IDR 30,000 per day or approximately IDR 900,000 a month. “Not to mention they also need water for watering their garden in order their plants can be harvested,” he said.

Similar condition also occurred to a number of residents at Sambirenteng and Tembok village. Headman of Sambirenteng, Nyoman Nuarya, said that his village still had about 300 families who were unable to enjoy clean water with ease. Most of the residents lived on the hill ranges. All this time, they relied on water supply from tank truck of PDAM that should be purchased at high price for the poor’s ability. At rather lower land area, a tank truck of water cost about IDR 65,000. However, for people living on higher land should pay IDR 105.000 per tank. For drinking only, at tank of water could be used for a month by a family.

However, if used for cooking, bathing and washing, a tank of water would not last up to one week. “Most of our residents are project workers whose income is not

Meanwhile, Headman of Tembok, Jero Padmawati, said there were about 150 families that had not enjoyed the facility of clean water. Those residents lived at Dadap Tebel hamlet.

According to her, her party had actually got an aid from one of the parties to channel water to the hamlet.

However, the aid only installed pipes and drained water to the village road. The matter of connecting the water to each home was fully delivered to residents. Since the residents claimed to have no money, they were unable to connect the water pipe to the house. “Now, they are only relying on the purchase of water from the tank truck owned by PDAM,” she said.

At Batugambir hamlet, Julah village and a number of hamlets at Sembiran village, residents also screamed due to shortage of water as triggered by long dry season.

Water discharge from the springs existing in the area continued to decline so that people sometimes were unable to shower. Even more alarming, only a few tank trucks could deliver water to the area because the road access was very difficult, uphill and meandering. “Sometimes, we do not shower because the water is very limited,” said one of the Batugambir residents. A carver becomes a victim of deadly arrack Tabanan (Bali Post)—

Deadly arrack claimed another victim in Tabanan. He was Wayan Mudita, 36, a resident of Yeh Gangga hamlet, Sudimara village, Tabanan. The man who worked as a mason died on Saturday (Sep 15) after receiving medical treatment in Sanglah Hospital, Denpasar. Complaints of the victim were exactly the same as previous victims, namely getting abdominal pain and similar symptom to poisoning. Allegedly, it was triggered by liquor.

Having been declared dead, the victim’s body was sent to funeral home around 2:30 p.m. Grief ambience looked to envelop the victim’s home. His family did not want to say much regarding the incident. They claimed to have accepted the incident sincerely. “We’re grieving, please be tolerated,” said the victim’s older cousin, Sukita.

This man confirmed if the victim was drinking liquor with some friends.

However, the family did not know with whom and when the liquor party was held. “We do not know where the victim purchased it. Clearly, we have sincerely accepted the victim’s death,” he said. He added the victim had been rushed to hospital because he suffered pain, but his life could not be saved. As claiming to have been sincere, the family did not want to prolong the incident. According to him, the family only focused on the preparation of ceremony for the victim. Based on the results of family meeting, he said, the victim would be given ritual on Sunday. “We are still looking for an auspicious day,” he explained.

As information compiled by Bali Post, the victim came to Sanglah Hospital around 00:00 p.m. local time. He had complained about pain in the abdomen and undergone dialysis. Unfortunately, the life of victim could not be saved. Allegedly, the victim died from drinking arrack mixed with methanol.

Operation Head of Tabanan Police, Ketut Wartana, justified if the resident died with the allegation of drinking liquor. “We’ve paid serious attention to liquor circulation. Reportedly, the victim liked drinking liquor,” he said. As a result of the habit, he said, condition of the victim’s body worsened. Related to the incident, Tabanan Police would issue a special warrant against the arrack circulation. According to him, the circulation of arrack was quite alarming. Therefore, it was feasible to be firmly suppressed. (kmb30)

Denpasar Has 35 filthy Residency Sites

The filthy residency sites in Denpasar still hasn’t been taken care well even though one site would be dispersed another would come up. For sure it is noted there are 35 filthy residency sites in Denpasar itself in the data of Denpasar Spatial Planning and Housing Agency.

Head of the Agency, Ir. A.A. Bagus Airawata, when met in his office stated last Friday (14/9) that the data was based on the number of houses there are in one area. “Minimal there are 10 in one location, under that we don’t note it down,” Airawata stated.

The filthiest site goes to West Denpasar, then South Denpasar.

In the future it is planned to have a comprehensive arrangement on these sites yet it is hard as each land was owned by individuals and so the government plan on it along its budget could not be applied (if the land is owned by central government then central government would take responsibility of it). Even so, by 2013 it is planned to arrange the housing at Tukad Badung Riversides (Banjar Jematang) with the river as it’s house front to avoid any waste disposal towards the river and Poh Gading, Ubung Kaja in building stacked houses which so a MoU will be applied to the owners of the lands so the central government program can be applied at Denpasar. “It’s DED will be completed at the end of the year and to be applied next year,” Airawata concluded. Akmani Legian joins coastal cleanup

The Akmani Legian joins the annual Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup to remove trashes from along 1,000 meters of Kuta beach area, which is located five minutes away from The Akmani Legian.

“We are excited being part of the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup this year. We all have a role to play in keeping our ocean clean and free of trash. We hope this small contribution helps to keep the Kuta beach clean,” Corporate General Manager The Akmani Hotels, Fanny Wantah, said.

She said that the cleanup is held together with 49 hotel pre-opening team of all levels working shoulder-to-shoulder in maintaining the cleanliness of the beach wellknown of its white sand.

Trash gathered were categorized and recorded, and the consolidated data will be sent to the Ocean Conservancy to be analysed and used to influence legislation on marine laws, She stated.

“On this one morning we collected more than 6,900 items in some four trash bags weighing of 42 kilograms,” Fanny added.

The International Coastal Cleanup in Bali is organized by EcoLeadership Training. The numbers of organisation and volunteer participating in the second year have increased from two organisations to nine plus three group zone captains.

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — Antarctica’s Ross Sea is often described as the most isolated and pristine ocean on Earth, a place where seals and penguins still rule the waves and humans are about as far away as they could be. But even there it has proven difficult, and maybe impossible, for nations to agree on how strongly to protect the environment.

The United States and New Zealand have spent two years trying to agree on an Alaska-sized marine sanctuary where fishing would be banned and scientists could study climate change. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton took a strong interest in the outcome, regularly prodding diplomats, and New Zealand recently sent a delegation to Washington to reach a tentative deal.

That compromise, over a region that accounts for less than 2 percent of New Zealand’s fishing industry, flopped this month when senior New

Zealand politicians rejected it behind closed doors.

The U.S. and New Zealand have now sent competing plans to the 25 countries that meet annually each October to decide the fate of Antarctica’s waters. Their inability to agree greatly increases the chances that nothing will get done.

Evan Bloom, director of the U.S. State Department’s Office of Ocean and Polar Affairs, said the U.S. put a great deal of effort into its reserve proposal because it believes the Ross Sea is the best place on Earth for sci-

‘UFO Mothership’ Near Space Station a Trick of the Light

Has the International Space Station inadvertently caught sight of an “Interstellar” Space Station hovering nearby? Or is a blurry streak that UFO hunters have found in new NASA footage filmed out the window of the space station merely a window reflection? Let the most likely explanation win.

On Sept. 11, YouTube user danielofdoriaa posted footage from the ISS’s live camera feed, which streams over the Web. In his annotated footage, he points out a faint, elongated white shape with a neat row of faint white dots next to it set against the blackness of space just below the curve of the Earth. It is an “amazing UFO mothership letting out an orb fleet on ISS live feed,” the YouTuber explains in the video title.

That would be amazing indeed. However, ufologist Marc D’Antonio, chief photo and video analyst for an international organization called the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), has analyzed thousands of ISS photos and videos alleged to contain UFOs, and he says the faint white marks in this one are a common sight: They’re reflections off of the window of the ISS. “Basically when you’re looking at any object, if there’s a window between you and the object, the window is always suspect. Mayor Michael Bloomberg didn’t mince words Thursday in describing the role that sugary beverages have played in the obesity epidemic: He likened the restrictions on caloric soft drinks to banning lead paint, and cited the surge in young children being diagnosed with a type of diabetes more commonly found in overweight adults.

“We are dealing with a crisis ... we need to act on this,” said Board of Health member Deepthiman Gowda, a professor of medicine at Columbia University.

So will New Yorkers listen, or simply get their next 20-ounce soda at the many thousands of convenience stores and supermarkets not covered by the rule? She said that tourism should be positioned as a way to enhance and promote the economic and social welfare. However, many people assumed that benchmark for the success of tourism development was the quantity of tourist visit or the increase in the number of visits.

“A large number of tourist visit will be no use if afflicting many people. Remember, tourism is for Bali, not vice versa that Bali for tourism, it has been going so far,” she said.

Myra assessed that mindset of the government considering the foreign investment as a measure of development was still wrong.

The coming of foreign investment should consider many aspects. The government should think of a good investment for people, benchmark and benefit for the community.

“Indeed, foreign investment brings in benefits, but it has not been optimal. Similarly, we must also realize if it was not entirely their faults,” she said.

HINDU possesses a medical science that has been very renowned from time immemorial, namely Ayurvedic medicine.

Ayurvedic medicine refers to the contents of the scripture Ayurveda born thousands of years ago. Ayurvedic scripture denotes a part of Upaweda in the group of Smriti Vedas. However, the Ayurvedic scripture is often confused with Yajur Veda, the scripture containing sacrificial formula that also belongs to Smriti Veda. Yajur Veda itself is a scripture discussing about Yajña or ceremony.

Author of the book Usada Bali (Balinese Traditional Healing), the late Prof. IGN Nala, once said that to help the healing, the Ayurvedic healers usually provided natural herbal medicine having few side effects. Almost all plants existing around us could be eaten, they were medicine. On that account, all plants having efficacy for healing were necessary to be inventoried and developed.

In the meantime, the Dean of Faculty of Health Science, Hindu University of Indonesia (Unhi), I Nyoman Prastika, said that based Taru Premana palm-manuscript there were a number of beneficial herbs having the efficacy to cure diseases. Parts of those plants taken advantage consisted of its leaf, flower, fruit, bark or roots. Each herb had different quality such as cool, warm and mild.

To know whether a particular plant had a cold, warm or mild quality, it could be observed from the color of its flower and flavor. For instance, white, yellow and green flower had warm quality. If their flowers were red and blue, these plants had cool efficacy. Meanwhile, if the flower was multi-colors, they could be ensured to have mild efficacy.

Likewise, if they tasted sweet and sour, its quality might be warm. However, if they tasted bitter and hot, they had cool efficacy. Then, if they were tasteless, they belonged to mild plant.

In herbal medicine system, added Prastika, people would be healthy if they consumed (ahara) nutritious healthy foods regularly, had adequate rest or sleep (nidra), and behaved (vihara) healthy. If the three aspects had been committed well, but it was still found health disturbances, then a herbal treatment (ausadhi) was required. Preparation method of herbal medicine could be divided into three kinds, namely grinding, spraying and boiled. Its healing method could be performed by drinking and dropping for internal healing, while the spraying or applying the paste for external use.

Then, what kinds of plant could be used to cure diseases?

Prastika said that virtually all edible plants by animals could be eaten by humans. Whether the herbs had medicinal quality, they could be observed from the color of their flowers and flavor as mentioned above. Similarly, the plants frequently used for spices in the cooking contained drug efficacy.

Red ginger for example, was good to increase warmth of the body as well as to stimulate or maintain immunity. If red ginger added with the flowers of carambola, bark of tamarind and kalmegh leaves, they could be used to accelerate breathing and relieve cough.

Meanwhile, to break up kidney stones and cure colic, people could also use herbal medicine. Its ingredients consisted of roots of reed, roots of palm tree, root of areca nut tree and added with palm sugar. All materials were thoroughly boiled. Afterward, its decoction water was drunk in the morning and afternoon.

Herbal remedies could also cope with cardiac palpitations.

Its ingredients comprised the soy beans, green beans, ginger, cumin, fennel, bidara upas (Merremia mammosa) leaf, coriander and pulasari (Alyxia Stellata). All ingredients should be boiled and then water of its decoction was drunk regularly.

Meanwhile, Balinese traditional healing used several palmleaf manuscripts as reference. One of them was Lontar Usada Tiwang. This manuscript described about various types of diseases along with their treatments. Tiwang conveyed numerous symptoms in the form of disorder on the function of organ.

There were several types of tiwang presented in the manuscripts such as tiwang utara, tiwang tojos, tiwang wedul, tiwang pemali pepasangan, tiwang wong, and tiwang rajasa.

Prastika added that tiwang pemali pepasangan had symptoms like prickling pain in the chest and on the back. Being no resistant to the pain, the sufferers often groaned. The disease itself could be treated by means of bark of rauvolfia, temu tis (Curcuma purpurascens), grilled coconut, hazelnut and fennel.

Residents complain about noises

Power plant asked to think about removal of diesel engines Singaraja (Bali Post)—

To address the complaint of residents regarding the noises generated by diesel engines in the Gas and Steam Power Plant (PLGU) at Pemaron village, Buleleng, the Regent Agus Suradnyana immediately invited the official of PT Indonesia Power as the operator of the PLTGU to discuss about the issues on Friday (Sep 14). In the meeting, the regent invited the official of the PT Indonesia Power to discuss about the possibility of removing the diesel engines in the PLTGU to another location.

Aside from the official of the PT Indonesia Power, the regent also invited the official of the PT PLN of North Bali Area. PT Indonesia Power was represented by Human Resources and Public Relations Manager, Achirin Aharis, while PT PLN was represented by Manager of PT PLN of North Bali Area, Bernadus Toto. Other than discussing about the complaints of residents over the noises of diesel engines with the officials of PT Indonesia Power, both officials of the power management company were also engaged to participate in resolving the clean water crisis at villages in Buleleng.

Related to complaints of residents, the Regent Agus Suradnyana asked the PT Indonesia Power to consider the possibility of removing the diesel engines of PLTGU to another location because a lot of people recently complained about the noises generated by the diesel engines. “From the discussion, it will be attempted to remove the diesel engines at Pemaron village in December considering the village and surrounding areas belong to a tourist resort,” said Regent Suradnyana last Saturday.

Meanwhile, Achirin Aharis from PT Indonesia Power said his party could not ascertain about the possibility of removing the diesel

engines to another location. He would coordinate the matter first with his boss and vendors. “Since we hire (the diesel engine) from the vendor, it will surely arrange it by itself pursuant to our contract agreement,” he said. The regent planed to invite back the officials of PT Indonesia Power next Friday to resolve the issue.

Then, discussion on the water issues, both PLN and PLTGU supported the plan to address the clean water problem by siphoning the water from the source at Air Sanih, Kubutambahan. The Indonesia Power and PT PLN even claimed to have explored the location and checked the condition of electricity that would be used to help the suction of water.

Manager of PT PLN of North Bali Area, Bernadus Toto, after the meeting with the Regent revealed his party had checked the condition of power line access to the location of water source at Sanih hamlet. From the checking, the electricity network technically had no problem. In other words, the efforts to drain off water from Sanih hamlet to several villages in Tejakula subdistrict could be done.

However, the plan still needed an in-depth technical assessment. One of the studies related to the water post-suction plan where it would be attempted not to burden the community at location.

“In essence, we are ready to help the government to address the clean water issue. We had also made a site inspection and the power line at location of the water sources and other villages have been available. But, it needs further discussion,” he said.

Achirin Aharis from the PT Indonesia Power also revealed similar opinion. He greatly supported the plan of regional government to jointly address the issues of clean water crisis at several villages in Buleleng.

Public order officers discipline traders on sidewalk

A number of fruit traders and gasoline retailers on pavement at Jalan Raya Puputan, Renon, were disciplined by the public order officers and civilian security guards of Denpasar on Friday (Sep 14). The team equipped with truck also confiscated the table used by traders to peddle. Actually the officers had also taken the scale of traders, but they asked not to bring along the tool they used to sell.

As monitoring at location, a number of officers began raiding the Jalan Raya Puputan from the Renon roundabout. Some traders found selling on the sidewalk were directly overtaken by the officers.

As fruit traders next to Japanese Consulate, Renon, were immediately disciplined by the officers. Papaya of the traders was immediately taken from the stall owned by traders.

Having put down the fruits, their tables used to display the fruits were

directly put onto truck by the officers. “We do this because they have been reprimanded again and again, but persisting to peddle there,” said the officer last Saturday.

Unfortunately, the raid was known by traders in the west of Jalan Raya Puputan. A number of traders looked to have kept back their goods before the officers arrived. Papaya traders and gasoline retailers previously displaying their goods on sidewalk immediately removed theirs. Allegedly

an individual had divulged the arrival of officers that would discipline the traders on the sidewalk.

After raiding on Jalan Raya Puputan, the officers resumed their duties to the area of Jalan Gajah Mada. There, they also seized several tables of traders known to violate the selling area.

The Head of Public Order Officer and Civilian Security Guards of Denpasar, I.B. Alit Wiradana, said the raid on Saturday was a regular agenda made by the officers in the field. Such an effort was to create a clean and comfortable Denpasar for everyone. “If they are peddling at forbidden location, we are forced to discipline them. MILAN - An Italian gossip magazine plans to publish on Monday a special edition dedicated to topless pictures of the wife of Britain’s Prince William, its editor said, defying risks of legal action.

The royal couple has already begun action against the French magazine Closer after it published a dozen shots of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge - the former Kate Middleton - as she slipped off her bikini top while sunbathing at a French chateaux.

Both Chi and Closer are controlled by Italian publisher Mondadori, part of the media empire of former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and chaired by his daughter Marina.

Chi Editor in Chief Alfonso Signorini said the special edition would include a 26-page reportage with topless pictures of the duchess, including some unpublished shots of her vacation with Prince William, second in line to the British throne.

“This reportage is worth a special edition. It shows in a very natural way the daily life of a

MADRID — Tens of thousands of people from all over Spain rallied in the capital Saturday against punishing austerity measures enacted by the government, which is trying to save the country from financial collapse.

Large anti-austerity protests also took place in neighboring Portugal.

Demonstrators in Lisbon threw tomatoes and fireworks at the Portuguese headquarters of the International Monetary Fund. Two protesters were arrested, but otherwise the rally was peaceful.

Spain is stuck in a double-dip recession with unemployment close to 25 percent. The conservative government of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has introduced stinging cuts and raised taxes in a bid to reduce the deficit and to reassure investors and officials from the 17-nation eurozone.

The marchers in Madrid unfurled banners with slogans such as “Let’s go! They are ruining the country and we have to stop them.”

“This government’s policies are causing too much pain,” union chief Ignacio Fernandez Toxo said. “It’s a lie that there isn’t another way to restore the economy.”

The situation looks set to get worse in coming weeks. At a meeting of eurozone finance ministers in Cyprus on

Friday, Spain revealed it would present a new set of economic reforms by the end of the month. It’s a move that raises expectations that Spain might soon ask for financial help.

The economic reform plan will be unveiled by Sept. 27. It is expected to be the launch-pad to Spain’s tapping of a new European Central Bank bond-buying plan.

Just before Saturday’s march began, buses transporting protesters blocked several major roads in the Spanish capital. The main organizers were Social Summit, an association of more than 150 organizations, and the Workers’ Commissions and General Workers trade unions.

The Interior Ministry’s regional office said it had expected more than 500,000 people to reach a central Madrid square, but later said 65,000 had attended to listen to speeches made by protest leaders.

Toxo called for a referendum on the government’s austerity and bailout plans, saying the measures were so different from the ruling Popular Party’s election pledges that Spaniards should have the right to express an opinion on them.

Rajoy was swept to power with a large majority in November elections, having said “I have no plans to raise taxes.”

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, an independent branch within the Treasury Department, is examining JPMorgan’s systems that are designed to monitor and filter such transactions, said the source, who is familiar with the situation.

The exact scope of the inquiry and the size of potential liabilities for the bank could not be learned.

JPMorgan spokesman Joseph Evangelisti declined to comment on Saturday.

In its quarterly filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission last month, JPMorgan said it expected heightened scrutiny by regulators of its compliance with new and existing regulations, including anti-money laundering laws.

The latest investigation comes in the midst of stepped-up efforts by regulators to crack down on money laundering, including transfers of drug money through bank networks and funds from countries facing international sanctions such as Iran.

The problem also has become a focus area for the Department of Justice, which wants to ramp up the number of criminal cases it brings under the Bank Secrecy Act, a law that requires financial institutions and their employees to take steps to prevent money laundering.

U.S. regulators also are potentially examining illicit transactions tied to Venezuela, the source said.

Earlier this summer, British bank HSBC Holdings Plc set aside $700 million to cover investigations that could result in one of the biggest ever settlements or fines. A U.S. Senate report criticized a “pervasively polluted” culture at the bank. The Senate panel examined transactions tied to Mexico, Iran, the Cayman Islands and Saudi Arabia.

Last month, New York’s banking regulator reached a $340 million settlement with British bank Standard Chartered Plc after the regulator investigated transactions tied to Iran.

There have also been smaller cases in which the comptroller’s office targeted weaknesses in how banks clear checks potentially tied to shadowy money transactions through a process called remote-deposit capture.

In April, the OCC identified a number of anti-money laundering deficiencies at Citigroup Inc. The inquiry investigated a monitoring gap at the bank tied to Citigroup’s remote deposit capture business.

At the time, Citigroup said it had fixed the deficiencies or was in the process of doing so. The New York Times earlier reported the news of the JPMorgan investigation.

Adel Daoud, a U.S. citizen from the Chicago suburb of Hillside, was arrested Friday night in an undercover operation in which an agent pretending to be a terrorist provided him with a phony car bomb and watched him press the trigger, prosecutors said.

Daoud is charged with attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and attempting to damage and destroy a building with an explosive. He remains in custody pending a detention and preliminary hearing set for Monday in federal court.

A person who answered the phone Saturday at the home where Daoud and his family live and identified herself as his sister, Hiba, declined to discuss Daoud, the family or the arrest.

INDONESIA Indonesia to investigate shooting incident in Malaysia Antara

MEDAN - Indonesia will investigate the sequence of events that led to the shooting death of “Indonesian migrant workers” by Malaysian police on September 7, according to House Speaker Marzuki Alie.

“We will investigate to know what really happened,” he said.

Marzuki added that he did not yet have details about the chronology of events that led to the incident.

“The House of Representatives will conduct an investigation into the incident in order to determine its stance”, he stated.

“However, according to foreign minister Marty Natalegawa,

the incident was related to a criminal case,” Marzuki explained.

Therefore, he added, if the Indonesian citizen was involved in a crime it would be difficult for Indonesia to defend the victim.

“However, it would be our obligation to provide defense if our citizen is put on trial,” Marzuki pointed out.

When asked about the exact number of migrant workers killed

in the incident, Marzuki said he had yet to receive details about the casualties.

“So far, only one Indonesian migrant worker has been confirmed (among the dead in the incident,” he stated.

It was reported earlier that the Malaysian police had shot four Indonesian migrant workers to death in Ipoh, Perak, on September 9.

Indonesian BNN arrests narcotics distribution chief Antara

CILACAP - The Indonesian National Narcotics Agency (BNN) has arrested a drug convict believed to have led the distribution of narcotic drugs from a maximum security prison in Nusakambangan, Cilacap, Central Java.

Adam Wilson, a Malawi citizen, was arrested while undergoing treatment at a local hospital in Cilacap on Friday.

BNN confiscated a number of materials as evidence, including a cell phone, during the arrest.

Wilson was then taken back to the Kembang Kuning Penitentiary in Nusakambangan by an ambulance at about 2 pm. According to the BNN, Wilson is the chief of an international narcotics distribution ring and has been running the illegal business from behind bars.

“Based on our investigation, Adami is the one who orchestrated the distribution of around 8.7 kilograms of methamphetamine. All suspects that we have arrested point at him,” BNN spokesman Senior Commissioner Sumirat Dwiyono said at a press conference.

He noted that Wilson`s arrest was made after the arrest of three suspects, identified as ES (who acted as a courier), HS and SA.

“ES is a ship crew member. ES, HS and SA are all Indonesian citizens,” Sumirat added.

“ES and HS had been ordered by someone to take crystal methamphetamine to India and they left for the country on August 8, 2012.

They received the stuff from a Nigerian citizen there on August 14 and later left for Timor Leste with two suitcases containing the drug,” he explained.

Sumirat stated that ES and HS were later joined by SA. Then, the three left for Kupang by land, carrying three suitcases full of crystal methamphetamine on August 22.

“They stayed at Hotel Brengston in Kupang before being caught by BNN officers on August 28,” he added. While interrogating the three arrested suspects, the officers learned that the drugs were supposed to be delivered to two different people, identified as G and R, in different places.

“The BNN officers then secretly monitored the delivery of the drugs to G, who was later caught at a hotel on Jalan Jenderal Sudirman in Medan, North Sumatra, on August 24, with 2,675.2 grams of meth as evidence,” Sumirat said.

The officers later caught another person, identified as C, who was

suspected to be an accomplice of R, after monitoring the delivery of the drugs to R. Sumirat said C admitted to receiving orders from three of his superiors, identified as HJ, HW and WY, for 507.3 grams, 50.2 grams and 1,504.7 grams of drugs, respectively - all of whom were later arrested in Tangerang, Banten.

“In the course of its investigations, BNN has confiscated 8,689.2 grams of methamphetamine. BNN is still working on the case,” he noted.

“They used completely new routes, which we had never expected. Normally, they use big airports as the entry points. But this time, the plan was to use small airports where the security is not as tight,” Sumiran pointed out.

When asked about the woman with Adami, he said she was Adami`s friend. “It was only Adam Wilson who was arrested in Cilacap.

The woman is only his friend,” Sumiran stated. Wilson was caught at around 5 am, in company of the woman, while undergoing treatment at the hospital in Cilacap.

“Earlier, he was sentenced to death by the district court of Tangerang in 2002 for possessing heroin,” Sumirat said.

Currently, the country`s unemployment rate is forecast to be around 5.8 percent - 6.1 percent in 2012, she said.

She said every growth of 1 percent in the economy will open 350,000 new jobs in the country. Earlier the Central Statistic Agency (BPS) said the country`s GDP in the second quarter of this year was 6.4 percent on-year and 2.8 percent quarter to quarter .

In the first half of the year, the country`s economy grew 6.3 percent on-year, the agency said.

It said the growth drivers included the household consumption, which grew 5 percent, the government consumption which expanded 6.5 percent and exports and imports which respectively grew 4.8 percent and 99.5 percent on-year.

MADRID - Real Madrid’s stuttering start to La Liga continued when they lost 1-0 at Sevilla to slip eight points behind leaders Barcelona who were 4-1 victors at Getafe earlier on Saturday.

With only one win and a draw from their first three games, champions Real were under pressure to react after Lionel Messi came off the bench to score twice and help Barca maintain their 100 percent record.

Sevilla’s Piotr Trochowski netted at a corner in the second minute and Real labored in their bid to equalize in a bruising and bad-tempered battle at the Sanchez Pizjuan.

Barca are top with 12 points from four games, two ahead of second-placed Malaga who were 3-1 winners at home to Levante. Sevilla rose to third on eight points and Real are 10th.

The scene was set in the opening minutes in Seville when Poland midfielder Trochowski arrived late and unmarked at a corner to hammer a volley into the roof of the net.

Almost immediately there was a melee at the other end of the pitch as tackles flew in thick and fast and tempers flared. It was almost a miracle that both sides finished with 11 men.

Real, who host Manchester City in one of the most attractive of the Champions League openers on Tuesday, struggled to test experienced keeper Andres Palop while Cristiano Ronaldo had a quiet game.

Former Barcelona and Real player Saviola joined Malaga on transfer deadline day two weeks ago and on his first start for the side burst on to Isco’s pass to score in the 27th minute.

Saviola, known as “El Conejo” (the rabbit), laid on the second goal for Joaquin in the 59th minute after Levante had grabbed an equalizer against the run of play when Michel ran the length of the pitch to score just after halftime.

SYDNEY - Italy and Juventus great Alessandro Del Piero arrived in Australia to a rapturous welcome from some 400 fans at Sydney airport on Sunday and immediately declared that he had come to win the A-League title. The 37-year-old striker, released by Juve after 19 years at the club in May, will be paid A$4 million ($4.23 million) over the two years of his contract with Sydney FC but was keen to emphasise that this was not the start of his retirement.

“I am here not for the end of my career but for the start of my new career,” he told reporters in a media scrum outside the terminal building. “I want to win some (titles). I play to win.”

Hundreds of chanting fans were already in place two hours before the 91-cap Italy international and his family emerged from the arrivals gate. A huge banner created by “Juventus Club Sydney” welcomed him in his own language and there were plenty in the crowd from Sydney’s large Italian community sporting the famous black and

white shirt of the Turin club.

There was plenty of Sydney FC sky blue on show too, though, and the chants, with the exception of a few renditions of “c’e solo un capitano” or “there’s only one captain”, were mostly about their affection for their “harbour city” club. “S-Y-D-NE-Y, I am Sydney till I die, with a nick nack paddy wack give a dog a bone, Alessandro welcome home!” ran one.

Sydney FC chief executive Tony Pignata, on hand to welcome his new signing, said he was certain the gamble of offering Del Piero the richest contract in Australian sporting history would reap rewards both on and off the pitch.

“There’s lots of anticipation for our first home match and I’m sure we’ll have a big crowd,” he told reporters.

LONDON - Manchester United and Arsenal enjoyed emphatic home wins over Wigan Athletic and Southampton respectively on Saturday to join Chelsea and Manchester City in the top four and give the Premier League summit a familiar feel. United beat Wigan 4-0 at Old Trafford, with Paul Scholes among the scorers on his 700th appearance for the club, while Arsenal hammered Southampton 6-1 at the Emirates to hand the promoted side a fourth straight defeat leaving them bottom.

Chelsea and City failed to win but the European champions stayed top after the west London derby at Queens Park Rangers finished in a 0-0 stalemate ending their 100 percent record. Champions Manchester City also dropped points in a 1-1 draw at Stoke City where Peter Crouch put the home side ahead with the clear use of his arm before Spaniard Javi Garcia replied with a debut header from a Carlos Tevez cross.

City manager Roberto Mancini was upset Crouch’s goal was allowed to stand, saying: “If we talk about their goal, it was not football but basketball, I don’t know how it was possible that the referee did not see it”. Former England striker Michael Owen, hoping to revive his career at Stoke, came on too late to make an impact.

The build-up to the match at Loftus Road was overshadowed by whether QPR’s Anton Ferdinand would shake hands with Chelsea’s John Terry and Ashley Cole after Terry was cleared in court of racially abusing Ferdinand in the same fixture last season. United manager Alex Ferguson was unhappy with their first-half performance but they were much better after the break. “We were far more aggressive ourselves in the second half in terms of getting to the ball,” he told Sky Sports. He also praised Scholes saying, “there is no-one better at doing what he did today.”

ARSENAL ROUT

Arsenal also had a thumping win after playing superbly, especially in the first half when they established a 4-0 lead over Southampton thanks to goals from Lukas Podolski and Gervinho and own goals from Jos Hooiveld and Nathaniel Clyne.

Although Daniel Fox pulled one back for Southampton just before the break, Gervinho added his second and Theo Walcott also scored against his old club to complete the rout.

ROME - AC Milan were booed off the pitch after suffering a shock 1-0 home defeat by Atalanta in Serie A on Saturday following a secondhalf Luca Cigarini strike that stunned the San Siro. The setback piled the pressure on Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri whose team are stuck in mid-table on three points having lost two of their first three league games this season.

Atalanta, who had two points deducted for their role in the latest match-fixing scandal, never let Milan relax with German Denis causing problems with his hold-up play and movement. The Argentine, nicknamed The Tank because of his strength, could have opened the scoring after 20 minutes when he pounced on a Francesco Acerbi error but his shot hit the post.

Six minutes later Milan could have opened the scoring themselves after forcing Atalanta’s Andrea Consigli to make a spectacular double save.

First he kept out Stephan El Shaarawy’s long-range strike and then the rebound off Gianpaolo Bellini to prevent a comical own goal after the defender had raced back to clear. The second half was short on chances with both sides seeming content to shoot from distance but Atalanta struck after 64 minutes when Cigarini raced onto a Denis lay-off and skidded a low shot across Christian Abbiati’s body from 25 metres.

MORE AGGRESSIVE

Milan reacted by being more aggressive and pushing their opponents back and would have equalised but for Giampaolo Pazzini and Antonio Nocerino failing to make contact with good crosses with the goal at their mercy. However, Atalanta could have doubled their lead with six minutes left but Cristian Raimondi wasted the chance when he finished a smart counter-attack by shooting straight at Abbiati.

Despite Milan’s continued pressure, Stefano Colantuono’s Atalanta side held on for a victory that puts them on two points, taking into account the two points that have been deducted, and lifts them out of the relegation zone.

Earlier, Cagliari’s Marco Sau came off the bench to snatch a late headed goal in a fortunate 1-1 draw at Palermo. Palermo took the lead in the 41st minute through Uruguay midfielder Arevalo Rios who arrived on the edge of the area to open his account for the season by ramming home a deflected shot from a Fabrizio Miccoli cut back through a crowd of players.

BUENOS AIRES - Czech Republic’s path to the Davis Cup final was wide open after they won the doubles on Saturday and Argentine Juan Martin del Potro pulled out of the reverse singles.

World number eight Del Potro almost withdrew from the semi-final at Parque Roca earlier this week due to pain in his right wrist.

“Juan Martin will not be in tomorrow’s first singles against Tomas Berdych and he will be replaced by Carlos Berlocq,” captain Martin Jaite told a news conference.

HILLSIDE, Ill. — Undercover FBI agents arrested an 18-yearold American man who tried to detonate what he believed was a car bomb outside a downtown Chicago bar, federal prosecutors said Saturday.

Adel Daoud, a U.S. citizen from the Chicago suburb of Hillside, was arrested Friday night in an undercover operation in which an agent pretending to be a terrorist provided him with a phony car bomb and watched him press the trigger, prosecutors said.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Chicago, which announced the arrest Saturday, said the device was harmless and the public was never at risk.

Daoud is charged with attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and attempting to damage and destroy a building with an explosive. He remains in custody pending a detention and preliminary hearing set for Monday in federal court.

A person who answered the phone Saturday at the home where Daoud and his family live and identified herself as his sister, Hiba, declined to discuss Daoud, the family or the arrest.

“We don’t even know anything. We don’t know that much. We know as little as you do,” she said. “They’re just accusations. ...

Later Saturday, no one answered the door of the family’s twostory home, which had a well-kept garden in the yard and a basketball hoop in the driveway. The house faces a Lutheran church; a Greek Orthodox church also is nearby.

Next-door neighbor Harry Pappas said he was shocked by the arrest, calling Daoud’s parents “wonderful” people and him a quiet boy who played basketball in the driveway with friends.

Pappas said Daoud spent a lot of time at home and that months would go by sometimes before the teen would surface.

“But I was never suspicious,” he said.

INDONESIA Indonesia to investigate shooting incident in Malaysia Antara

MEDAN - Indonesia will investigate the sequence of events that led to the shooting death of “Indonesian migrant workers” by Malaysian police on September 7, according to House Speaker Marzuki Alie.

“We will investigate to know what really happened,” he said.

Marzuki added that he did not yet have details about the chronology of events that led to the incident.

“The House of Representatives will conduct an investigation into the incident in order to determine its stance”, he stated.

“However, according to foreign minister Marty Natalegawa,

the incident was related to a criminal case,” Marzuki explained.

Therefore, he added, if the Indonesian citizen was involved in a crime it would be difficult for Indonesia to defend the victim.

“However, it would be our obligation to provide defense if our citizen is put on trial,” Marzuki pointed out.

When asked about the exact number of migrant workers killed

in the incident, Marzuki said he had yet to receive details about the casualties.

“So far, only one Indonesian migrant worker has been confirmed (among the dead in the incident,” he stated.

It was reported earlier that the Malaysian police had shot four Indonesian migrant workers to death in Ipoh, Perak, on September 9.

Indonesian BNN arrests narcotics distribution chief Antara

CILACAP - The Indonesian National Narcotics Agency (BNN) has arrested a drug convict believed to have led the distribution of narcotic drugs from a maximum security prison in Nusakambangan, Cilacap, Central Java.

Adam Wilson, a Malawi citizen, was arrested while undergoing treatment at a local hospital in Cilacap on Friday.

BNN confiscated a number of materials as evidence, including a cell phone, during the arrest.

Wilson was then taken back to the Kembang Kuning Penitentiary in Nusakambangan by an ambulance at about 2 pm. According to the BNN, Wilson is the chief of an international narcotics distribution ring and has been running the illegal business from behind bars.

“Based on our investigation, Adami is the one who orchestrated the distribution of around 8.7 kilograms of methamphetamine. All suspects that we have arrested point at him,” BNN spokesman Senior Commissioner Sumirat Dwiyono said at a press conference.

He noted that Wilson`s arrest was made after the arrest of three suspects, identified as ES (who acted as a courier), HS and SA.

“ES is a ship crew member. ES, HS and SA are all Indonesian citizens,” Sumirat added.

“ES and HS had been ordered by someone to take crystal methamphetamine to India and they left for the country on August 8, 2012.

They received the stuff from a Nigerian citizen there on August 14 and later left for Timor Leste with two suitcases containing the drug,” he explained.

Sumirat stated that ES and HS were later joined by SA. Then, the three left for Kupang by land, carrying three suitcases full of crystal methamphetamine on August 22.

“They stayed at Hotel Brengston in Kupang before being caught by BNN officers on August 28,” he added. While interrogating the three arrested suspects, the officers learned that the drugs were supposed to be delivered to two different people, identified as G and R, in different places.

“The BNN officers then secretly monitored the delivery of the drugs to G, who was later caught at a hotel on Jalan Jenderal Sudirman in Medan, North Sumatra, on August 24, with 2,675.2 grams of meth as evidence,” Sumirat said.

The officers later caught another person, identified as C, who was

suspected to be an accomplice of R, after monitoring the delivery of the drugs to R. Sumirat said C admitted to receiving orders from three of his superiors, identified as HJ, HW and WY, for 507.3 grams, 50.2 grams and 1,504.7 grams of drugs, respectively - all of whom were later arrested in Tangerang, Banten.

“In the course of its investigations, BNN has confiscated 8,689.2 grams of methamphetamine. BNN is still working on the case,” he noted.

“They used completely new routes, which we had never expected. Normally, they use big airports as the entry points. But this time, the plan was to use small airports where the security is not as tight,” Sumiran pointed out.

When asked about the woman with Adami, he said she was Adami`s friend. “It was only Adam Wilson who was arrested in Cilacap.

The woman is only his friend,” Sumiran stated. Wilson was caught at around 5 am, in company of the woman, while undergoing treatment at the hospital in Cilacap.

“Earlier, he was sentenced to death by the district court of Tangerang in 2002 for possessing heroin,” Sumirat said.

Currently, the country`s unemployment rate is forecast to be around 5.8 percent - 6.1 percent in 2012, she said.

She said every growth of 1 percent in the economy will open 350,000 new jobs in the country. Earlier the Central Statistic Agency (BPS) said the country`s GDP in the second quarter of this year was 6.4 percent on-year and 2.8 percent quarter to quarter .

In the first half of the year, the country`s economy grew 6.3 percent on-year, the agency said.

It said the growth drivers included the household consumption, which grew 5 percent, the government consumption which expanded 6.5 percent and exports and imports which respectively grew 4.8 percent and 99.5 percent on-year.

MADRID — Tens of thousands of people from all over Spain rallied in the capital Saturday against punishing austerity measures enacted by the government, which is trying to save the country from financial collapse.

Large anti-austerity protests also took place in neighboring Portugal.

Demonstrators in Lisbon threw tomatoes and fireworks at the Portuguese headquarters of the International Monetary Fund. Two protesters were arrested, but otherwise the rally was peaceful.

Spain is stuck in a double-dip recession with unemployment close to 25 percent. The conservative government of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has introduced stinging cuts and raised taxes in a bid to reduce the deficit and to reassure investors and officials from the 17-nation eurozone.

The marchers in Madrid unfurled banners with slogans such as “Let’s go! They are ruining the country and we have to stop them.”

“This government’s policies are causing too much pain,” union chief Ignacio Fernandez Toxo said. “It’s a lie that there isn’t another way to restore the economy.”

The situation looks set to get worse in coming weeks. At a meeting of eurozone finance ministers in Cyprus on

Friday, Spain revealed it would present a new set of economic reforms by the end of the month. It’s a move that raises expectations that Spain might soon ask for financial help.

The economic reform plan will be unveiled by Sept. 27. It is expected to be the launch-pad to Spain’s tapping of a new European Central Bank bond-buying plan.

Just before Saturday’s march began, buses transporting protesters blocked several major roads in the Spanish capital. The main organizers were Social Summit, an association of more than 150 organizations, and the Workers’ Commissions and General Workers trade unions.

The Interior Ministry’s regional office said it had expected more than 500,000 people to reach a central Madrid square, but later said 65,000 had attended to listen to speeches made by protest leaders.

Toxo called for a referendum on the government’s austerity and bailout plans, saying the measures were so different from the ruling Popular Party’s election pledges that Spaniards should have the right to express an opinion on them.

Rajoy was swept to power with a large majority in November elections, having said “I have no plans to raise taxes.”

The Madrid protest comes four days after another anti-government gathering in the northeastern city of Barcelona that attracted about 1.5 million demonstrators, according to police estimates.

“We’ve had our pay cut. We don’t get the firefighting training and equipment we need. There are more students and fewer teachers in our children’s classrooms, and health care is also being cut,” firefighter Carlos Melgaves said, while marching in a group of about 50 firefighters.

“We can’t take it anymore.”

Spain’s economy minister, Luis de Guindos, said his government is aware it is asking citizens to make sacrifices.

They “are absolutely unavoidable if we are to correct the difficult economic climate we are experiencing,” he said in Cyprus, where Europe’s finance ministers were meeting Saturday. “We are laying the foundations for a recovery.”

Rajoy has accepted a loan of up to €100 billion ($127billion) to help ailing banks reeling from a collapse of the country’s real estate and construction industries. His government also has faced punishingly high interest rates while raising money on bond markets to keep the economy in liquidity.

JPMorgan Chase & Co’s compliance with U.S. anti-money laundering laws is being reviewed by a banking regulator, a source said, making the largest U.S. bank the latest target of a wide investigation of how banks prevent transactions involving drug money and sanctioned countries.

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, an independent branch within the Treasury Department, is examining JPMorgan’s systems that are designed to monitor and filter such transactions, said the source, who is familiar with the situation.

The exact scope of the inquiry and the size of potential liabilities for the bank could not be learned.

JPMorgan spokesman Joseph Evangelisti declined to comment on Saturday.

In its quarterly filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission last month, JPMorgan said it expected heightened scrutiny by regulators of its compliance with new and existing regulations, including anti-money laundering laws.

The latest investigation comes in the midst of stepped-up efforts by regulators to crack down on money laundering, including transfers of drug money through bank networks and funds from countries facing international sanctions such as Iran.

The problem also has become a focus area for the Department of Justice, which wants to ramp up the number of criminal cases it brings under the Bank Secrecy Act, a law that requires financial institutions and their employees to take steps to prevent money laundering.

U.S. regulators also are potentially examining illicit transactions tied to Venezuela, the source said.

Earlier this summer, British bank HSBC Holdings Plc set aside $700 million to cover investigations that could result in one of the biggest ever settlements or fines. A U.S. Senate report criticized a “pervasively polluted” culture at the bank. The Senate panel examined transactions tied to Mexico, Iran, the Cayman Islands and Saudi Arabia.

Residents complain about noises

Power plant asked to think about removal of diesel engines Singaraja (Bali Post)—

To address the complaint of residents regarding the noises generated by diesel engines in the Gas and Steam Power Plant (PLGU) at Pemaron village, Buleleng, the Regent Agus Suradnyana immediately invited the official of PT Indonesia Power as the operator of the PLTGU to discuss about the issues on Friday (Sep 14). In the meeting, the regent invited the official of the PT Indonesia Power to discuss about the possibility of removing the diesel engines in the PLTGU to another location.

Aside from the official of the PT Indonesia Power, the regent also invited the official of the PT PLN of North Bali Area. PT Indonesia Power was represented by Human Resources and Public Relations Manager, Achirin Aharis, while PT PLN was represented by Manager of PT PLN of North Bali Area, Bernadus Toto. Other than discussing about the complaints of residents over the noises of diesel engines with the officials of PT Indonesia Power, both officials of the power management company were also engaged to participate in resolving the clean water crisis at villages in Buleleng.

Related to complaints of residents, the Regent Agus Suradnyana asked the PT Indonesia Power to consider the possibility of removing the diesel engines of PLTGU to another location because a lot of people recently complained about the noises generated by the diesel engines. “From the discussion, it will be attempted to remove the diesel engines at Pemaron village in December considering the village and surrounding areas belong to a tourist resort,” said Regent Suradnyana last Saturday.

Meanwhile, Achirin Aharis from PT Indonesia Power said his party could not ascertain about the possibility of removing the diesel

engines to another location. He would coordinate the matter first with his boss and vendors. “Since we hire (the diesel engine) from the vendor, it will surely arrange it by itself pursuant to our contract agreement,” he said. The regent planed to invite back the officials of PT Indonesia Power next Friday to resolve the issue.

Then, discussion on the water issues, both PLN and PLTGU supported the plan to address the clean water problem by siphoning the water from the source at Air Sanih, Kubutambahan. The Indonesia Power and PT PLN even claimed to have explored the location and checked the condition of electricity that would be used to help the suction of water.

From the checking, the electricity network technically had no problem. In other words, the efforts to drain off water from Sanih hamlet to several villages in Tejakula subdistrict could be done.

However, the plan still needed an in-depth technical assessment. One of the studies related to the water post-suction plan where it would be attempted not to burden the community at location.

“In essence, we are ready to help the government to address the clean water issue. We had also made a site inspection and the power line at location of the water sources and other villages have been available. But, it needs further discussion,” he said.

Achirin Aharis from the PT Indonesia Power also revealed similar opinion. He greatly supported the plan of regional government to jointly address the issues of clean water crisis at several villages in Buleleng.

Public order officers discipline traders on sidewalk

A number of fruit traders and gasoline retailers on pavement at Jalan Raya Puputan, Renon, were disciplined by the public order officers and civilian security guards of Denpasar on Friday (Sep 14). The team equipped with truck also confiscated the table used by traders to peddle. Actually the officers had also taken the scale of traders, but they asked not to bring along the tool they used to sell.

As monitoring at location, a number of officers began raiding the Jalan Raya Puputan from the Renon roundabout. Some traders found selling on the sidewalk were directly overtaken by the officers.

As fruit traders next to Japanese Consulate, Renon, were immediately disciplined by the officers. Papaya of the traders was immediately taken from the stall owned by traders.

Having put down the fruits, their tables used to display the fruits were

directly put onto truck by the officers. “We do this because they have been reprimanded again and again, but persisting to peddle there,” said the officer last Saturday.

Unfortunately, the raid was known by traders in the west of Jalan Raya Puputan. A number of traders looked to have kept back their goods before the officers arrived. Papaya traders and gasoline retailers previously displaying their goods on sidewalk immediately removed theirs. Allegedly

After raiding on Jalan Raya Puputan, the officers resumed their duties to the area of Jalan Gajah Mada. There, they also seized several tables of traders known to violate the selling area.

MILAN - An Italian gossip magazine plans to publish on Monday a special edition dedicated to topless pictures of the wife of Britain’s Prince William, its editor said, defying risks of legal action.

The royal couple has already begun action against the French magazine Closer after it published a dozen shots of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge - the former Kate Middleton - as she slipped off her bikini top while sunbathing at a French chateaux.

Both Chi and Closer are controlled by Italian publisher Mondadori, part of the media empire of former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and chaired by his daughter Marina.

Chi Editor in Chief Alfonso Signorini said the special edition would include a 26-page reportage with topless pictures of the duchess, including some unpublished shots of her vacation with Prince William, second in line to the British throne.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand — Antarctica’s Ross Sea is often described as the most isolated and pristine ocean on Earth, a place where seals and penguins still rule the waves and humans are about as far away as they could be. But even there it has proven difficult, and maybe impossible, for nations to agree on how strongly to protect the environment.

The United States and New Zealand have spent two years trying to agree on an Alaska-sized marine sanctuary where fishing would be banned and scientists could study climate change. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton took a strong interest in the outcome, regularly prodding diplomats, and New Zealand recently sent a delegation to Washington to reach a tentative deal.

That compromise, over a region that accounts for less than 2 percent of New Zealand’s fishing industry, flopped this month when senior New

Zealand politicians rejected it behind closed doors.

The U.S. and New Zealand have now sent competing plans to the 25 countries that meet annually each October to decide the fate of Antarctica’s waters. Their inability to agree greatly increases the chances that nothing will get done.

‘UFO Mothership’ Near Space Station a Trick of the Light

Has the International Space Station inadvertently caught sight of an “Interstellar” Space Station hovering nearby? Or is a blurry streak that UFO hunters have found in new NASA footage filmed out the window of the space station merely a window reflection? Let the most likely explanation win.

On Sept. 11, YouTube user danielofdoriaa posted footage from the ISS’s live camera feed, which streams over the Web. In his annotated footage, he points out a faint, elongated white shape with a neat row of faint white dots next to it set against the blackness of space just below the curve of the Earth. It is an “amazing UFO mothership letting out an orb fleet on ISS live feed,” the YouTuber explains in the video title.

That would be amazing indeed. However, ufologist Marc D’Antonio, chief photo and video analyst for an international organization called the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), has analyzed thousands of ISS photos and videos alleged to contain UFOs, and he says the faint white marks in this one are a common sight: They’re reflections off of the window of the ISS. “Basically when you’re looking at any object, if there’s a window between you and the object, the window is always suspect. Your first move in trying to identify the object is to try to eliminate that it’s a reflection,” D’Antonio told Life’s Little Mysteries. For one thing, the object in question is in a different plane of focus from Earth, he said. A camera set to focus on maximum distance would capture both the Earth and any other faraway object in the same focal plane. Second, the fact that this object raised no alarm bells with the ISS crew or ground control suggests they’ve seen it all before. “It was simply assumed by the ground control folks that this was a reflection in the window, because most of them are,” D’Antonio said.

Now, the Big Apple has set its sights on sugary beverages with a first-in-the-nation rule barring restaurants, cafeterias and concessions stands from selling soda and other calorie-rich drinks in containers larger than 16 ounces.

Will it make a difference, or be just another health lifestyle initiative that people ignore?

Public health experts around the nation — and the restaurant and soft-drink industry — will be watching closely to see whether the new restrictions on supersized colas, adopted Thursday by the city’s Board of Health, lead to changes in the way New Yorkers eat and drink.

No other U.S. city has tried to fight the obesity epidemic by restricting portion sizes at restaurants, but city officials said they were willing to take dramatic action as a way of getting a skeptical public to embrace the idea that empty-calorie foods are a menace.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg didn’t mince words Thursday in describing the role that sugary beverages have played in the obesity epidemic: He likened the restrictions on caloric soft drinks to banning lead paint, and cited the surge in young children being diagnosed with a type of diabetes more commonly found in overweight adults.

“We are dealing with a crisis ... we need to act on this,” said Board of Health member Deepthiman Gowda, a professor of medicine at Columbia University.

So will New Yorkers listen, or simply get their next 20-ounce soda at the many thousands of convenience stores and supermarkets not covered by the rule? By nature, many are likely to see the restrictions as an infringement on personal liberty. A New York Times poll last month showed that six in 10 New Yorkers opposed the rule.

“It’s a slippery slope. When does it stop? What comes next?” said Sebastian Lopez, a college student from Queens, adding that even though he isn’t much of a soda drinker, “This is my life. I should be able to do what I want.”

“It is required the sincerity of regional leaders to drive investment to other regencies that are still vacant.

In other words, they should think of neighbors as well, so that equity can be realized,” she said.

She said the benchmark of tourism success should be changed. It should no longer refer to the quantity of tourist visit, but be more focused on resulting impacts, whether the tourism growth could improve the welfare of community or only ben-

“Tourism development is not the objective of tourism, but it is a means used to reach the welfare of society,” she said.

She said that tourism should be positioned as a way to enhance and promote the economic and social welfare. However, many people assumed that benchmark for the success of tourism development was the quantity of tourist visit or the increase in the number of visits.

“A large number of tourist visit will be no use if afflicting many people. Remember, tourism is for Bali, not vice versa that Bali for tourism, it has been going so far,” she said.

Myra assessed that mindset of the government considering the foreign investment as a measure of development was still wrong.

The coming of foreign investment should consider many aspects. The government should think of a good investment for people, benchmark and benefit for the community.

“Indeed, foreign investment brings in benefits, but it has not been optimal. Similarly, we must also realize if it was not entirely their faults,” she said.

In the meantime, the Dean of Faculty of Health Science, Hindu University of Indonesia (Unhi), I Nyoman Prastika, said that based Taru Premana palm-manuscript there were a number of beneficial herbs having the efficacy to cure diseases. Parts of those plants taken advantage consisted of its leaf, flower, fruit, bark or roots. Each herb had different quality such as cool, warm and mild.

To know whether a particular plant had a cold, warm or mild quality, it could be observed from the color of its flower and flavor. For instance, white, yellow and green flower had warm quality. If their flowers were red and blue, these plants had cool efficacy. Meanwhile, if the flower was multi-colors, they could be ensured to have mild efficacy.

Likewise, if they tasted sweet and sour, its quality might be warm. However, if they tasted bitter and hot, they had cool efficacy. Then, if they were tasteless, they belonged to mild plant.

In herbal medicine system, added Prastika, people would be healthy if they consumed (ahara) nutritious healthy foods regularly, had adequate rest or sleep (nidra), and behaved (vihara) healthy. If the three aspects had been committed well, but it was still found health disturbances, then a herbal treatment (ausadhi) was required. Preparation method of herbal medicine could be divided into three kinds, namely grinding, spraying and boiled. Its healing method could be performed by drinking and dropping for internal healing, while the spraying or applying the paste for external use.

Then, what kinds of plant could be used to cure diseases?

Prastika said that virtually all edible plants by animals could be eaten by humans. Whether the herbs had medicinal quality, they could be observed from the color of their flowers and flavor as mentioned above. Similarly, the plants frequently used for spices in the cooking contained drug efficacy.

Red ginger for example, was good to increase warmth of the body as well as to stimulate or maintain immunity. If red ginger added with the flowers of carambola, bark of tamarind and kalmegh leaves, they could be used to accelerate breathing and relieve cough.

Meanwhile, to break up kidney stones and cure colic, people could also use herbal medicine. Its ingredients consisted of roots of reed, roots of palm tree, root of areca nut tree and added with palm sugar. All materials were thoroughly boiled. Afterward, its decoction water was drunk in the morning and afternoon.

Herbal remedies could also cope with cardiac palpitations.

Its ingredients comprised the soy beans, green beans, ginger, cumin, fennel, bidara upas (Merremia mammosa) leaf, coriander and pulasari (Alyxia Stellata). All ingredients should be boiled and then water of its decoction was drunk regularly.

Meanwhile, Balinese traditional healing used several palmleaf manuscripts as reference. One of them was Lontar Usada Tiwang. This manuscript described about various types of diseases along with their treatments. Tiwang conveyed numerous symptoms in the form of disorder on the function of organ.

There were several types of tiwang presented in the manuscripts such as tiwang utara, tiwang tojos, tiwang wedul, tiwang pemali pepasangan, tiwang wong, and tiwang rajasa.

Prastika added that tiwang pemali pepasangan had symptoms like prickling pain in the chest and on the back. Being no resistant to the pain, the sufferers often groaned. The disease itself could be treated by means of bark of rauvolfia, temu tis (Curcuma purpurascens), grilled coconut, hazelnut and fennel.

Bali News Drought in East Buleleng

Residents spend much money to purchase water Singaraja (Bali Post)—

Some residents at several villages in East Buleleng such as at Pacung, Tembok, Sambirenteng and surrounding villages are apparently destined to have a different fate from people in other parts of Bali. Aside from still struggling with poverty, they should also spend a lot of money to purchase water every day in dry season.

At Pacung village, Tejakula subdistrict, a total of some 450 families are unable to enjoy clean water for decades.

In rainy season, they usually hold water in a large enough storage. When entering dry season, the rainwater is then used for drinking and cooking.

Unexpectedly, the dry season in 2012 is in fact quite long. Rainwater in the storage has run out before dry season comes to an end. Therefore, the village has to face a kind of unresolved dilemma. If wishing to drink water, the residents are forced to seek water to sources on the beach. Since more time is used to find water to location of about one to two kilometers, then they finally are unable to work as laborer or work in the garden maximally.

As a result, their income drops and they even have no income at all.

If they insist on working as a construction worker or working in the garden to get money, then they must be willing to purchase water usually sold by taxi motor at around IDR 5,000 per jerry can containing about 20 liters. With such condition, people are still unable to have saving because their money has been spent to purchase water.

The dilemma was recognized by Headman of Pacung, Made Yasa. According to him, the majority of residents who were poor and relying on income as a construction worker and farmer could spend nearly IDR 1 million per month. According to estimation obtained from the Municipality Waterworks (PDAM), every resident needed as much as 125 liters of water every day for drinking, bathing, washing and cooking. Such 125 liters were approximately equivalent to 6 jerry cans. If the price was IDR 5,000 per jerry can, so people had to spend around IDR 30,000 per day or approximately IDR 900,000 a month. “Not to mention they also need water for watering their garden in order their plants can be harvested,” he said.

Similar condition also occurred to a number of residents at Sambirenteng and Tembok village. Headman of Sambirenteng, Nyoman Nuarya, said that his village still had about 300 families who were unable to enjoy clean water with ease. Most of the residents lived on the hill ranges. All this time, they relied on water supply from tank truck of PDAM that should be purchased at high price for the poor’s ability. At rather lower land area, a tank truck of water cost about IDR 65,000. However, for people living on higher land should pay IDR 105.000 per tank. For drinking only, at tank of water could be used for a month by a family.

However, if used for cooking, bathing and washing, a tank of water would not last up to one week. “Most of our residents are project workers whose income is not

Meanwhile, Headman of Tembok, Jero Padmawati, said there were about 150 families that had not enjoyed the facility of clean water. Those residents lived at Dadap Tebel hamlet.

According to her, her party had actually got an aid from one of the parties to channel water to the hamlet.

However, the aid only installed pipes and drained water to the village road. The matter of connecting the water to each home was fully delivered to residents. Since the residents claimed to have no money, they were unable to connect the water pipe to the house. “Now, they are only relying on the purchase of water from the tank truck owned by PDAM,” she said.

At Batugambir hamlet, Julah village and a number of hamlets at Sembiran village, residents also screamed due to shortage of water as triggered by long dry season.

Water discharge from the springs existing in the area continued to decline so that people sometimes were unable to shower. Even more alarming, only a few tank trucks could deliver water to the area because the road access was very difficult, uphill and meandering. “Sometimes, we do not shower because the water is very limited,” said one of the Batugambir residents. A carver becomes a victim of deadly arrack Tabanan (Bali Post)—

Deadly arrack claimed another victim in Tabanan. He was Wayan Mudita, 36, a resident of Yeh Gangga hamlet, Sudimara village, Tabanan. The man who worked as a mason died on Saturday (Sep 15) after receiving medical treatment in Sanglah Hospital, Denpasar. Complaints of the victim were exactly the same as previous victims, namely getting abdominal pain and similar symptom to poisoning. Allegedly, it was triggered by liquor.

Having been declared dead, the victim’s body was sent to funeral home around 2:30 p.m. Grief ambience looked to envelop the victim’s home. His family did not want to say much regarding the incident. They claimed to have accepted the incident sincerely. “We’re grieving, please be tolerated,” said the victim’s older cousin, Sukita.

This man confirmed if the victim was drinking liquor with some friends.

However, the family did not know with whom and when the liquor party was held. “We do not know where the victim purchased it. Clearly, we have sincerely accepted the victim’s death,” he said. He added the victim had been rushed to hospital because he suffered pain, but his life could not be saved. As claiming to have been sincere, the family did not want to prolong the incident. According to him, the family only focused on the preparation of ceremony for the victim. Based on the results of family meeting, he said, the victim would be given ritual on Sunday. “We are still looking for an auspicious day,” he explained.

As information compiled by Bali Post, the victim came to Sanglah Hospital around 00:00 p.m. local time. He had complained about pain in the abdomen and undergone dialysis. Unfortunately, the life of victim could not be saved. Allegedly, the victim died from drinking arrack mixed with methanol.

Operation Head of Tabanan Police, Ketut Wartana, justified if the resident died with the allegation of drinking liquor. “We’ve paid serious attention to liquor circulation. Reportedly, the victim liked drinking liquor,” he said. As a result of the habit, he said, condition of the victim’s body worsened. Related to the incident, Tabanan Police would issue a special warrant against the arrack circulation. According to him, the circulation of arrack was quite alarming. Denpasar Has 35 filthy Residency Sites

The filthy residency sites in Denpasar still hasn’t been taken care well even though one site would be dispersed another would come up. For sure it is noted there are 35 filthy residency sites in Denpasar itself in the data of Denpasar Spatial Planning and Housing Agency.

Head of the Agency, Ir. A.A. Bagus Airawata, when met in his office stated last Friday (14/9) that the data was based on the number of houses there are in one area. “Minimal there are 10 in one location, under that we don’t note it down,” Airawata stated.

The filthiest site goes to West Denpasar, then South Denpasar.

In the future it is planned to have a comprehensive arrangement on these sites yet it is hard as each land was owned by individuals and so the government plan on it along its budget could not be applied (if the land is owned by central government then central government would take responsibility of it). Even so, by 2013 it is planned to arrange the housing at Tukad Badung Riversides (Banjar Jematang) with the river as it’s house front to avoid any waste disposal towards the river and Poh Gading, Ubung Kaja in building stacked houses which so a MoU will be applied to the owners of the lands so the central government program can be applied at Denpasar. “It’s DED will be completed at the end of the year and to be applied next year,” Airawata concluded. Akmani Legian joins coastal cleanup

The Akmani Legian joins the annual Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup to remove trashes from along 1,000 meters of Kuta beach area, which is located five minutes away from The Akmani Legian.

“We are excited being part of the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup this year. We all have a role to play in keeping our ocean clean and free of trash. We hope this small contribution helps to keep the Kuta beach clean,” Corporate General Manager The Akmani Hotels, Fanny Wantah, said.

She said that the cleanup is held together with 49 hotel pre-opening team of all levels working shoulder-to-shoulder in maintaining the cleanliness of the beach wellknown of its white sand.

Trash gathered were categorized and recorded, and the consolidated data will be sent to the Ocean Conservancy to be analysed and used to influence legislation on marine laws, She stated.

“On this one morning we collected more than 6,900 items in some four trash bags weighing of 42 kilograms,” Fanny added.

The International Coastal Cleanup in Bali is organized by EcoLeadership Training. The numbers of organisation and volunteer participating in the second year have increased from two organisations to nine plus three group zone captains.

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

LOS ANGELES — The fantasy series “Game of Thrones” was the big winner Saturday at the creative arts Emmy Awards. The HBO saga received a leading six trophies at the ceremony that recognizes technical and other achievements. History’s “Hatfields & McCoys,” HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire” and the 65th annual Tony Awards on CBS each nabbed three awards.

Among networks, HBO earned a leading 17 creative arts Emmys, followed by CBS with 13 and PBS with 11. Discovery received six awards, NBC got five and ABC and the Cartoon Network won four each. Fox won two trophies. Emmys in 26 categories including acting, writing and directing will be presented at the upcoming ceremony, which will air live on ABC at 8 p.m. EDT next Sunday.

The Wana kertih was held by means of ritual paraphernalia like catur rebah and officiated over by two high priests namely Ida Pedanda Gde Oka Karang from Griya Lumintang, Denpasar and Ida Pedanda Gde Purwa Gautama from Griya Wanasari, Sidemen, Karangasem.
