With dreamy electro pop, Milk and Bone charts own path QUEBEC CITY - With smooth minimalist electro pop and lush vocal harmonies, Milk and Bone has found a growing audience while charting an unusual path for French Canadian artists -- singing entirely in English. The Montreal duo of Camille Poliquin and Laurence LafondBeaulne met studying jazz together and playing as back-up musicians when, sensing a chemistry between them four years ago, they posted on their personal social media accounts a snippet of a song that became “New York.” To their surprise and delight, they quickly amassed a following. The two friends had suddenly become a band. They rushed to find management, figure out a look and choose the duo’s name, whose meaning they still struggle to explain. “We never saw it coming be-
cause at first this was just a platform for people we knew to listen to our music,” Poliquin told AFP alongside Lafond-Beaulne at their hotel in Quebec City where they played the historic provincial capital’s summer festival. “Pressure” -- like many of Milk and Bone’s songs, marked by chill but dominant percussion, melancholic keyboards and delicate, complementing layers of the two women’s voices -- has been streamed nine million times on Spotify or the sharing site SoundCloud. Kylian Mbappe and another supremely talented generation of French players may just be getting started after overcoming Croatia to win the World Cup in Russia. While the 19-year-old is the poster boy for France’s new crop of talent, the make-up of the squad suggests they have the youth and firepower to dominate international football for years to come. The average age of a fine back four of Benjamin Pavard, Raphael Varane, Samuel Umtiti and Lucas Hernandez is just 23. Ousmane Dembele, who cost Barcelona 105 million euros ($123 million), played for just two min-
utes in the knockout stages, while France’s other goalscorers on Sunday, Antoine Griezmann, 27, and Paul Pogba, 25, are in their prime. Export boosted
Entrepreneurs trained and export documents made easy
DENPASAR —The moment of dollar exchange rate increase is used by the government to boost exports. The effort made by the government is by improving product quality and facilitating completeness of export documents. Meanwhile, the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) Bali is expanding its cooperation with export destination countries. Chairman of Kadin Bali, A.A. Ngurah Alit Wiraputra, said he is exploring the Russian market. Moreover, on July 17 he was invited by the Russian Chamber of Commerce to discuss about trade cooperation. Other than Russia, Kadin is also exploring Australia. Based on the latest statistical data, the largest drop in the exports is to Australia. The cooperation is done between Indonesian Chamber of Commerce with Russian and Australian counterpart to market the products of Bali. Furthermore, the Kadin will create a mapping of excellent products that can be exported to both countries. “Not all products
can be received there, so that we also map the quantity,” he said. According to him, the government has not yet made a mapping effort. So far, the exporters do their exporting business by selftaught, anything is marketed. Previously, the IWAPI Gianyar said the Middle East market is very good. Meanwhile, Kadin has been working on all countries in the Middle East. The most needed commodities in the Middle East are wood products such as furniture, handicrafts, and others. The export completeness document like SVLK is no longer a problem because it can be facilitated by Kadin at a more affordable cost. Due to trade
cooperation between Kadin and its counterpart from various countries, the ease and convenience of documents can also be obtained. The government plan to subsidize SVLK for the micro, small and medium furniture industries is welcomed by Kadin since it makes it easier for the entrepreneurs to boost exports. However, the target to boost the exports is now constrained by generalized system of preferences (GSP) facilities given by the United States that will be removed. A total of 131 products from Bali such as wood are included in the recipient of the facility. For that reason, Kadin and Minister of Trade have left for America to negotiate this
US policy. Head of the Bali Industry and Trade Agency, Putu Astawa, said the effort is to provide support for the smoothness of export documents. For example, it required Certificate of Origin (SKA) of the exported products. “We facilitate to make it easier even through online. Moreover, we still serve even on holidays because we commit to increasing the export,” he said. The government will also subsidize the SVLK submission. This program belongs to central government. However, the central government is recognized to have limited funds so that it cannot help all the regions. This year, Bali itself does not get the help but he hoped that Bali can get it later on. “To submit the SVLK needs big cost for surveyor fees to verify that the wood used as the raw material does not damage nature or forest,” he
said. It costs up to IDR 25 million. Product quality also needs to be improved in order to be competitive and really liked. For that purpose, he did coaching around Bali by providing training in innovation and information, packaging techniques, marketplace training (online sales) and promotion. But he recognized the promotion that can be given by local government is in the country. Meanwhile, the overseas promotion to expand export destination countries cannot be facilitated because of budget constraints. Middle East markets such as South Africa and South Asia are being targeted for export. On that account, he hoped that central government can take the industry from Bali to promote overseas. In addition, he attempted to approach the Chinese Consulate in order to facilitate the exhibition in China next November. (kmb42)
Huge drugs haul intercepted in Bali: Indonesia police Bali police said Monday they had intercepted a huge haul of Australia-bound cold relief tablets that contained a key ingredient for making illicit drugs. Some 600,000 pseudoephedrine tablets being sent from South Korea to Australia were found during a stopover on the Indonesian resort island, they said. The bust happened in January but was announced Monday. Indonesian authorities said they were tipped off by their counterparts in Australia. Bottles of the pills, weighing nearly 140 kilograms (310 pounds) in total, were labelled as health food, authorities said. Lab tests done on the seized drugs confirmed they contained
pseudoephedrine, a precursor for making methamphetamine and other illegal drugs, said Indonesian customs director general Heru Pambudi. A resident of Australia, who was not identified, had been arrested by Australian police over the haul, Pambudi added. Indonesia has some of the toughest drug laws in the world. Foreigners are regularly caught trying to bring drugs into Bali and some have been sentenced to death. In the first half of 2018 alone Bali’s customs office said it had seized 3.9 tonnes of drugs and ingredients used as methamphetamine precursors that were being smuggled through the island.(afp)

CHICAGO - A zippy little particle has been traced back to its cosmic stomping grounds, a flaring galaxy 4 billion light-years away, for the first time solving a cosmic whodunit. Scientists have long puzzled over the sources of high-energy particles from space, which batter the Earth at energies that can outstrip the world’s most advanced particle accelerators. Now, physicists have identified the source of an energetic, lightweight particle called a neutrino. The intergalactic voyager came from a type of bright galaxy called a blazar located in the direction of the constellation Orion, scientists report online July 12 in Science.

“This is super exciting news,” says astrophysicist Angela Olinto of the University of Chicago, who was not involved with the new result. “It’s marking the beginning of what we call neutrino astronomy,” which uses the nearly massless particles to reveal secrets of cosmic oddities like blazars. While there may be additional cosmic sources for high-
energy neutrinos, the detection indicates that at least some come from blazars. The result also suggests that blazars emit other energetic particles known as cosmic rays, which are produced in tandem with neutrinos. The origins of high-energy cosmic rays are poorly understood and until now, “nobody has ever been able to pinpoint a source that
produces them,” says astrophysicist Francis Halzen of the University of Wisconsin–Madison, a leader of IceCube, the Antarctic neutrino observatory that detected the particle. Thanks to this discovery, “we will better understand nature of the universe’s immense cosmic accelerators,” France Córdova said in a July 12 news confer-
ence in Alexandria, Va. Scientists can’t produce such high-energy particles on Earth, “so we have to turn to the heavens to deepen our understanding of the highestenergy processes,” said Córdova, the director of the National Science Foundation, which funded IceCube. IceCube, which was constructed within a cubic kilometer of ice sheet, uses thousands of embedded sensors to measure light produced when neutrinos slam into the ice. MADISON - When eggs go bad, bacteria usually get the blame. But some bacteria help bobtail squid keep their eggs fresh. Bacteria that female Hawaiian bobtail squid (Euprymna scolopes) deposit in the jelly surrounding their eggs can fight off a fungus called Fusarium keratoplasticum, Spencer Nyholm reported July 9 at the Beneficial Microbes Conference. A specialized organ called the accessory nidamental gland is
found only in female bobtail squid and other cephalopods. The organ houses bacteria, mostly varieties of Rhodobacteraceae and Verrucomicrobia, and helps coat eggs with a thick layer of protective jelly impregnated with the microbes. Nyholm, of the University of Connecticut in Storrs, and colleagues treated squid eggs with antibiotics to kill the bacteria. The eggs grew fuzzy with fungus, and the developing squid embryos soon died.
Bacteria from the accessory nidamental gland make several types of antifungal chemicals, including some that haven’t been characterized before, the researchers discovered. Some of those antifungal chemicals also inhibited growth of some bacteria and other fungi, including Candida albicans, a type of fungus that causes infections in humans. Squid bacteria may one day be a source of new kinds of natural antibiotics or antifungal drugs, Nyholm says. (net)

If the product is only tourism, it has high risk. When there is something happening to Mount Agung, the economy is down,” said Jacob Peter, Head of the IMF-World Bank 2018 Working Unit on Thursday (Jul. 13). Another example, if there is a security problem, it has very great impact on Bali tourism. Therefore Bali needs to diversify the product. For example, it can create products that are not intended for the benefit of tourists, so that it can be exported or sent out. It will help Bali’s economy. Food products or manufactured products must be developed as a form of economic diversification. “Otherwise, only depending on tourism is not good,” he said. He exemplified other countries such as Thailand where even though it has a fairly high tourism, it already diversified with other products as well. “If there is a coup in Thailand, economically it can still work. The impact may not drive too high growth, but it will not drop significantly as well,” he said. According to him, in the future it should be considered even though tourism remains a mainstay. He expressed such opinion when seeing the availability of paddy fields in Bali having reduced, transformed into hotels and so on for tourism. “That should become a consideration,” he added. (kmb42)

MANGUPURA — Various modes of crime are committed by thieves to smooth their action as what the suspect Sumanah, 38, did when taking in action on Kuta Beach. He crawled on the sand to a bag belonging to Korean Sunkyung Roh, 22, and took the victim’s valuables. As a result of the action, the perpetrator was arrested on Sunday (Jul. 15) when wishing to take action again. Spokesperson of Bali Police, Hengky Widjaja, said the disclosure of this case is after the members of Kuta Police did reconnaissance around the scene for about a month. “Results of the investigation indicated if the theft was committed by the mode of crawling and targeting along Kuta Beach to Seminyak Beach, Badung,” he said. This case occurred on Saturday (Jun. 2) at 01:00 local time. Initially, the victim was sitting at the scene exactly in front of the Pullman Hotel. After sitting for a moment there, the victim took the iPhone X in the bag but was no longer in place. He immediately checked the items
stored in the bag, in fact, his debit card and money of IDR 300,000 disappeared. Few hours later, the victim received information from the bank that his debit card was used for transactions at Minimart and Circle K on Jalan Pratama, Tanjung Benoa, South Kuta. Subsequently, the victim reported the incident to Kuta Police. Armed with the results of CCTV footage and investigations, police conducted a reconnaissance around the scene. The officers believe the perpetrator will return to take action. On Sunday (Jul. 15) at 01:30 local time, the man with similar characteristics with the CCTV footage came again. Police immediately arrested the man in the front gate of the Pullman Hotel. When interrogated, the man claimed to be Sumanah and have stolen the victim’s belongings. When examined, the perpetrator said if the victim’s credit card was handed over to his friend, ED. Meanwhile, the iPhone X was sold to AN for IDR 5 million and IDR 4 million was used to pay for advance payment for the purchase
of Honda Scoopy motorcycle. The rest of the money is used for everyday purposes. Then, the credit card was used to buy cigarettes and withdraw a cash of IDR 700,000. “The perpetrator admitted to have taken action for ten times in the same way and his target was on the beach,” said Spokesperson Hengky. The crime scenes are on Kuta Beach respectively three times in front of the Hotel Bali Anggrek, three times in front of Pullman Hotel, once in front of Beach Walk, once in front of Citadine Hotel, once in front of Hotel Istana Rama and once in front of Kuta Hotel. From this case, police secured the evidence of Honda Scoopy motorcycle, three smartphones, two powerbanks, one speaker, camera, five women’s bags, purses, sunglasses, two banknotes of US dollars, 13 pieces of foreign banknotes from various countries and other evidence. “This case is handled by the Kuta Police and the perpetrator has been detained at the police station,” he said. VARANASI - It is well past midnight as Bahadur Choudhary, a fourthgeneration caretaker of Varanasi’s ancient cremation grounds, sprinkles ceremonial butter on huge funeral pyres burning on the banks of the Ganges. Choudhary is illiterate, poor and low caste, but his role in Varanasi, one of the holiest cities in India, is sacrosanct in Hindu mythology. Born a keeper of the flame, tradition dictates that Choudhary oversee the sacred fires and cremation grounds at Varanasi that Hindus believe free them from the cycle of life and death. These funeral custodians are the Doms, a small community living by Varanasi’s burning “ghats”, where cremation fires burn day and night
and the smell of the dead hangs heavy in the air. “The dead are our only business,” Choudhary told AFP at the Manikarnika ghat, where thick black smoke rose from pyres as huddled families sobbed, and beggars and near-naked holy men wandered around seeking donations. For centuries, the Doms have provided the ceremonial flame used to cremate the dead brought to Varanasi for “moksha”, or release from the Hindu life cycles. At the ghats, the Doms pass flaming torches to the families of the deceased, who ignite the wooden pyres dotting the riverside. As the bodies wrapped in white shroud and marigold flowers are
turned to ash, the remains are collected and sprinkled in the Ganges, and the Doms collect their dues. Choudhary, instructing two fire attendants to add more butter and wood to a pyre, said their community survives off whatever the mourners pay them. “Some can barely afford the cremation,” he said. “Others make generous donations, and even offer to feed all the labourers.” Choudhary said he could earn as little as 150 rupees ($2) for backbreaking labour that could last 18 hours. French car giant Renault on Monday reported a nearly 10 percent surge in sales in the first half of 2018, scoring a new 2.1 million vehicle sales record driven by gains in Russia, Argentina and Brazil. “For the third consecutive year, we have set a new sales record, with nearly 2.1 million vehicles sold in the first half,” Renault’s executive vice president of sales and marketing Thierry Koskas said in a statement. In Europe, Renault’s registrations rose 2.8 percent, where the group took an 11 percent share of the market, the statement said. The compact Clio 4 car was the second bestselling car in Europe, while Renault’s electric vehicle range “confirmed its leadership with a market share of 21.9 percent”. Outside Europe, the Renault group saw a whopping 22.2 percent jump in registrations in Argentina, and of 13.7 percent in Brazil. In Russia, the group’s second-biggest market, sales rose by 19.7 percent, the statement said. In Iran, sales fell 10.3 percent as the United States prepared to reimpose sanctions after President Donald Trump announced in May he was withdrawing from the landmark nuclear deal.(afp)

Deutsche Bank says to beat earnings forecasts in Q2 Germany’s biggest lender Deutsche Bank said Monday it had far outstripped analysts’ estimates of its earnings in the second quarter, but its bottom line remained short of last year’s performance. The group said it would report net income of “approximately 400 million euros” ($467 million) between April and June -- 10.5 percent lower than the same period last year. But the result is much beefier than predictions from analysts surveyed by data company Factset, who forecast net income of around 120 million euros. Meanwhile, Deutsche Bank said
second-quarter revenues would be stable year-on-year, at around 6.6 billion euros -- higher than analysts’ forecast of around 6.4 billion. “Management believes that these results demonstrate the resilience of the franchise,” the group said in a statement. Deutsche is looking to project a refreshed, confident image to investors under new chief executive Christian Sewing, who replaced crisis firefighter John Cryan at the head of the bank in April. After the group reported a 79percent slump in profits in the first quarter, to just 120 million euros, company lifer Sewing announced
it was time to “act decisively” by slashing some activities at its flagship corporate and investment banking division. In future, Deutsche plans to reduce its presence in the United States and Asia in favour of Europe and Germany and retreat from certain trading activities. Shares in the group surged on the preliminary results release in Monday morning trading, gaining 5.1 percent to trade at 10.10 euros by 0850 GMT in Frankfurt and topping the DAX index of bluechip German stocks. The mecaru ceremony uses three pieces in the usual category and symbolizes Tri Kona, namely the utpati (generation), stiti (operation), and pralina (destruction). Meanwhile, the use of five pieces of tetimpug is in the caru belonging to larger category such as grandiose ritual. BANGKOK - A British caver who helped rescue 12 boys from a Thai cave said Monday he may take legal action against Elon Musk after the entrepreneur called him a “pedo”.
Tesla CEO Musk launched the extraordinary tirade against Vernon Unsworth without providing any justification or explanation, after the cave expert slammed his offer of a miniature submarine to extract the footballers from the Tham Luang cave as a “PR stunt”. The “Wild Boar” team were rescued last week by an international team of divers through a narrow network of twisting, flooded tunnels. Unsworth, who provided mapping knowledge of the cave to rescuers, said Musk’s prototype would have had “absolutely no chance of working”. Musk responded Sunday in a bizarre series of tweets referring to Unsworth, without using his name, as “pedo guy”. “Pedo” is short for paedophile. The entrepreneur doubled down on his claim, tweeting from his official account to more than 22 million followers: “Bet ya a signed dollar it’s true”. Musk later deleted the tweets and did not immediately respond to a request for comment through Tesla. Unsworth told AFP on Monday he had not reviewed the tweets in full and had only heard about them. But asked if he would take legal action against Musk over the allegation, Unsworth said: “If it’s what I think it is yes.” The caver said he would make a decision when he flies back to the UK this week, but added that the episode with Musk “ain’t finished”.

The boys got stuck in the cave after wandering in on June 23 after football practice only to find themselves trapped by rising floodwaters. BANGKOK - A British caver who helped rescue 12 boys from a Thai cave said Monday he may take legal action against Elon Musk after the entrepreneur called him a “pedo”.
Tesla CEO Musk launched the extraordinary tirade against Vernon Unsworth without providing any justification or explanation, after the cave expert slammed his offer of a miniature submarine to extract the footballers from the Tham Luang cave as a “PR stunt”. The “Wild Boar” team were rescued last week by an international team of divers through a narrow network of twisting, flooded tunnels. Unsworth, who provided mapping knowledge of the cave to rescuers, said Musk’s prototype would have had “absolutely no chance of working”. Musk responded Sunday in a bizarre series of tweets referring to Unsworth, without using his name, as “pedo guy”. “Pedo” is short for paedophile. The entrepreneur doubled down on his claim, tweeting from his official account to more than 22 million followers: “Bet ya a signed dollar it’s true”. Musk later deleted the tweets and did not immediately respond to a request for comment through Tesla. Unsworth told AFP on Monday he had not reviewed the tweets in full and had only heard about them. But asked if he would take legal action against Musk over the allegation, Unsworth said: “If it’s what I think it is yes.” The caver said he would make a decision when he flies back to the UK this week, but added that the episode with Musk “ain’t finished”.
- ‘Life and death’ Unsworth, who lives part of the year in Thailand, took part in the gargantuan 18-day effort to retrieve the 12 boys and their coach, a mission that ended on July 10 when the last five members were extracted. The boys are all in good health and expected to be released from the hospital Thursday. Reports emerged Monday that two Australian divers who took part in the rescue had obtained diplomatic immunity before the operation in case it failed. Anaesthetist Richard Harris and diver Craig Challen were protected from prosecution if anything went awry following negotiations between Australian and Thai authorities, according to Australian broadcaster ABC. Challen said the divers had been uncertain if they would be able to save all 12 boys and their coach in the “life and death” rescue mission. “It wasn’t dangerous for us, but I can’t emphasise enough how dangerous it was for the kids,” he told Perth’s Sunday Times. The boys got stuck in the cave after wandering in on June 23 after football practice only to find themselves trapped by rising floodwaters. French car giant Renault on Monday reported a nearly 10 percent surge in sales in the first half of 2018, scoring a new 2.1 million vehicle sales record driven by gains in Russia, Argentina and Brazil. “For the third consecutive year, we have set a new sales record, with nearly 2.1 million vehicles sold in the first half,” Renault’s executive vice president of sales and marketing Thierry Koskas said in a statement. The compact Clio 4 car was the second bestselling car in Europe, while Renault’s electric vehicle range “confirmed its leadership with a market share of 21.9 percent”. Outside Europe, the Renault group saw a whopping 22.2 percent jump in registrations in Argentina, and of 13.7 percent in Brazil. In Russia, the group’s second-biggest market, sales rose by 19.7 percent, the statement said. Deutsche Bank says to beat earnings forecasts in Q2 Germany’s biggest lender Deutsche Bank said Monday it had far outstripped analysts’ estimates of its earnings in the second quarter, but its bottom line remained short of last year’s performance. The group said it would report net income of “approximately 400 million euros” ($467 million) between April and June -- 10.5 percent lower than the same period last year. But the result is much beefier than predictions from analysts surveyed by data company Factset, who forecast net income of around 120 million euros. Meanwhile, Deutsche Bank said
second-quarter revenues would be stable year-on-year, at around 6.6 billion euros -- higher than analysts’ forecast of around 6.4 billion. “Management believes that these results demonstrate the resilience of the franchise,” the group said in a statement. Deutsche is looking to project a refreshed, confident image to investors under new chief executive Christian Sewing, who replaced crisis firefighter John Cryan at the head of the bank in April. After the group reported a 79percent slump in profits in the first quarter, to just 120 million euros, company lifer Sewing announced

VARANASI - It is well past midnight as Bahadur Choudhary, a fourthgeneration caretaker of Varanasi’s ancient cremation grounds, sprinkles ceremonial butter on huge funeral pyres burning on the banks of the Ganges. Choudhary is illiterate, poor and low caste, but his role in Varanasi, one of the holiest cities in India, is sacrosanct in Hindu mythology. Born a keeper of the flame, tradition dictates that Choudhary oversee the sacred fires and cremation grounds at Varanasi that Hindus believe free them from the cycle of life and death. These funeral custodians are the Doms, a small community living by Varanasi’s burning “ghats”, where cremation fires burn day and night
and the smell of the dead hangs heavy in the air. “The dead are our only business,” Choudhary told AFP at the Manikarnika ghat, where thick black smoke rose from pyres as huddled families sobbed, and beggars and near-naked holy men wandered around seeking donations. For centuries, the Doms have provided the ceremonial flame used to cremate the dead brought to Varanasi for “moksha”, or release from the Hindu life cycles. At the ghats, the Doms pass flaming torches to the families of the deceased, who ignite the wooden pyres dotting the riverside. As the bodies wrapped in white shroud and marigold flowers are
turned to ash, the remains are collected and sprinkled in the Ganges, and the Doms collect their dues. Choudhary, instructing two fire attendants to add more butter and wood to a pyre, said their community survives off whatever the mourners pay them. “Some can barely afford the cremation,” he said. “Others make generous donations, and even offer to feed all the labourers.” Choudhary said he could earn as little as 150 rupees ($2) for backbreaking labour that could last 18 hours. Scientists have long puzzled over the sources of high-energy particles from space, which batter the Earth at energies that can outstrip the world’s most advanced particle accelerators. Now, physicists have identified the source of an energetic, lightweight particle called a neutrino. The intergalactic voyager came from a type of bright galaxy called a blazar located in the direction of the constellation Orion, scientists report online July 12 in Science.

MADISON - When eggs go bad, bacteria usually get the blame. But some bacteria help bobtail squid keep their eggs fresh. Bacteria that female Hawaiian bobtail squid (Euprymna scolopes) deposit in the jelly surrounding their eggs can fight off a fungus called Fusarium keratoplasticum, Spencer Nyholm reported July 9 at the Beneficial Microbes Conference. A specialized organ called the accessory nidamental gland is
found only in female bobtail squid and other cephalopods. The organ houses bacteria, mostly varieties of Rhodobacteraceae and Verrucomicrobia, and helps coat eggs with a thick layer of protective jelly impregnated with the microbes. Nyholm, of the University of Connecticut in Storrs, and colleagues treated squid eggs with antibiotics to kill the bacteria. The eggs grew fuzzy with fungus, and the developing squid embryos soon died.
Bacteria from the accessory nidamental gland make several types of antifungal chemicals, including some that haven’t been characterized before, the researchers discovered. Some of those antifungal chemicals also inhibited growth of some bacteria and other fungi, including Candida albicans, a type of fungus that causes infections in humans. Squid bacteria may one day be a source of new kinds of natural antibiotics or antifungal drugs, Nyholm says. (net)

If the product is only tourism, it has high risk. When there is something happening to Mount Agung, the economy is down,” said Jacob Peter, Head of the IMF-World Bank 2018 Working Unit on Thursday (Jul. 13). Another example, if there is a security problem, it has very great impact on Bali tourism. Therefore Bali needs to diversify the product. For example, it can create products that are not intended for the benefit of tourists, so that it can be exported or sent out. It will help Bali’s economy. Food products or manufactured products must be developed as a form of economic diversification. “Otherwise, only depending on tourism is not good,” he said. He exemplified other countries such as Thailand where even though it has a fairly high tourism, it already diversified with other products as well. “If there is a coup in Thailand, economically it can still work. The impact may not drive too high growth, but it will not drop significantly as well,” he said. According to him, in the future it should be considered even though tourism remains a mainstay. Spokesperson of Bali Police, Hengky Widjaja, said the disclosure of this case is after the members of Kuta Police did reconnaissance around the scene for about a month. “Results of the investigation indicated if the theft was committed by the mode of crawling and targeting along Kuta Beach to Seminyak Beach, Badung,” he said. This case occurred on Saturday (Jun. 2) at 01:00 local time. Initially, the victim was sitting at the scene exactly in front of the Pullman Hotel. After sitting for a moment there, the victim took the iPhone X in the bag but was no longer in place. He immediately checked the items
stored in the bag, in fact, his debit card and money of IDR 300,000 disappeared. Few hours later, the victim received information from the bank that his debit card was used for transactions at Minimart and Circle K on Jalan Pratama, Tanjung Benoa, South Kuta. Subsequently, the victim reported the incident to Kuta Police. Armed with the results of CCTV footage and investigations, police conducted a reconnaissance around the scene. The officers believe the perpetrator will return to take action. On Sunday (Jul. 15) at 01:30 local time, the man with similar characteristics with the CCTV footage came again. Police immediately arrested the man in the front gate of the Pullman Hotel. When interrogated, the man claimed to be Sumanah and have stolen the victim’s belongings. The crime scenes are on Kuta Beach respectively three times in front of the Hotel Bali Anggrek, three times in front of Pullman Hotel, once in front of Beach Walk, once in front of Citadine Hotel, once in front of Hotel Istana Rama and once in front of Kuta Hotel. From this case, police secured the evidence of Honda Scoopy motorcycle, three smartphones, two powerbanks, one speaker, camera, five women’s bags, purses, sunglasses, two banknotes of US dollars, 13 pieces of foreign banknotes from various countries and other evidence. “This case is handled by the Kuta Police and the perpetrator has been detained at the police station,” he said. DENPASAR —The moment of dollar exchange rate increase is used by the government to boost exports. The effort made by the government is by improving product quality and facilitating completeness of export documents. Meanwhile, the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) Bali is expanding its cooperation with export destination countries. Chairman of Kadin Bali, A.A. Ngurah Alit Wiraputra, said he is exploring the Russian market. Moreover, on July 17 he was invited by the Russian Chamber of Commerce to discuss about trade cooperation. Other than Russia, Kadin is also exploring Australia. Based on the latest statistical data, the largest drop in the exports is to Australia. The cooperation is done between Indonesian Chamber of Commerce with Russian and Australian counterpart to market the products of Bali. Furthermore, the Kadin will create a mapping of excellent products that can be exported to both countries. “Not all products
can be received there, so that we also map the quantity,” he said. According to him, the government has not yet made a mapping effort. So far, the exporters do their exporting business by selftaught, anything is marketed. Previously, the IWAPI Gianyar said the Middle East market is very good. Meanwhile, Kadin has been working on all countries in the Middle East. The most needed commodities in the Middle East are wood products such as furniture, handicrafts, and others. The export completeness document like SVLK is no longer a problem because it can be facilitated by Kadin at a more affordable cost. Due to trade
cooperation between Kadin and its counterpart from various countries, the ease and convenience of documents can also be obtained. The government plan to subsidize SVLK for the micro, small and medium furniture industries is welcomed by Kadin since it makes it easier for the entrepreneurs to boost exports. However, the target to boost the exports is now constrained by generalized system of preferences (GSP) facilities given by the United States that will be removed. A total of 131 products from Bali such as wood are included in the recipient of the facility. For that reason, Kadin and Minister of Trade have left for America to negotiate this
US policy. Head of the Bali Industry and Trade Agency, Putu Astawa, said the effort is to provide support for the smoothness of export documents. For example, it required Certificate of Origin (SKA) of the exported products. “We facilitate to make it easier even through online. Moreover, we still serve even on holidays because we commit to increasing the export,” he said. The government will also subsidize the SVLK submission. This program belongs to central government. However, the central government is recognized to have limited funds so that it cannot help all the regions. This year, Bali itself does not get the help but he hoped that Bali can get it later on. “To submit the SVLK needs big cost for surveyor fees to verify that the wood used as the raw material does not damage nature or forest,” he
said. It costs up to IDR 25 million. Product quality also needs to be improved in order to be competitive and really liked. For that purpose, he did coaching around Bali by providing training in innovation and information, packaging techniques, marketplace training (online sales) and promotion. But he recognized the promotion that can be given by local government is in the country. Meanwhile, the overseas promotion to expand export destination countries cannot be facilitated because of budget constraints. Middle East markets such as South Africa and South Asia are being targeted for export. On that account, he hoped that central government can take the industry from Bali to promote overseas. Huge drugs haul intercepted in Bali: Indonesia police Bali police said Monday they had intercepted a huge haul of Australia-bound cold relief tablets that contained a key ingredient for making illicit drugs. Some 600,000 pseudoephedrine tablets being sent from South Korea to Australia were found during a stopover on the Indonesian resort island, they said. The bust happened in January but was announced Monday. Indonesian authorities said they were tipped off by their counterparts in Australia. Bottles of the pills, weighing nearly 140 kilograms (310 pounds) in total, were labelled as health food, authorities said. Lab tests done on the seized drugs confirmed they contained
pseudoephedrine, a precursor for making methamphetamine and other illegal drugs, said Indonesian customs director general Heru Pambudi. A resident of Australia, who was not identified, had been arrested by Australian police over the haul, Pambudi added. Indonesia has some of the toughest drug laws in the world. Foreigners are regularly caught trying to bring drugs into Bali and some have been sentenced to death. In the first half of 2018 alone Bali’s customs office said it had seized 3.9 tonnes of drugs and ingredients used as methamphetamine precursors that were being smuggled through the island.(afp)

World Cup ‘just the beginning’ for Mbappe-led France

Kylian Mbappe and another supremely talented generation of French players may just be getting started after overcoming Croatia to win the World Cup in Russia. While the 19-year-old is the poster boy for France’s new crop of talent, the make-up of the squad suggests they have the youth and firepower to dominate international football for years to come. The average age of a fine back four of Benjamin Pavard, Raphael Varane, Samuel Umtiti and Lucas Hernandez is just 23. Ousmane Dembele, who cost Barcelona 105 million euros ($123 million), played for just two min-
utes in the knockout stages, while France’s other goalscorers on Sunday, Antoine Griezmann, 27, and Paul Pogba, 25, are in their prime. In scoring his fourth goal of the tournament and France’s fourth of a 4-2 win in the World Cup final in Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium, Mbappe -- named young player of tournament -- became the youngest player since Pele to score in football’s biggest match. “I have a story to write, this
is just the beginning,” Mbappe warned the world. “I intend to go even further.” It is not the first time in Russia the lightning-quick Paris Saint-Germain forward has drawn comparisons with the Brazilian great. In scoring twice against Argentina in the last 16, Mbappe became the first teenager since Pele to score multiple goals in a World Cup game. “If Kylian keeps equalling my records like this I may have to dust my boots off again,” tweeted Pele. After starring as a 17-year-old in 1958, Pele went on to win two more World Cups, and while Mbappe has
much to do to match those feats, there is no telling how dominant a young French squad littered with world-class players can become. Just nine players of the World Cup-winning squad were at Euro 2016, although there were just five changes comparing the starting line-ups from the two finals. Only Nigeria sent a younger group than Didier Deschamps’s 23 to Russia yet France can boast serial winners at club level in Varane, Mbappe, Pogba and N’Golo Kante. “Kylian Mbappe is just 19. I hope he will win it again but you
