China’s largest ever Picasso exhibition opens BEIJING - The largest Picasso exhibition ever held in China opens on Saturday, featuring more than 100 works -- many of them from the artist’s early years. The “Birth of a Genius” exhibition brings together the best of the Picasso Museum Paris, Laurent Le Bon, the museum’s president told AFP. Featured works include paintings, sculptures and drawings, and are accompanied by photos of the young Pablo in Barcelona and Paris. The first Picasso exhibition in China was held in 1983, timed to coincide with a Beijing visit by then French president Francois Mitterrand. Just 33 pieces of art were put on display. This year’s exhibition, which runs until September 1 at the UCCA Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing, focuses on the artist’s first 30 years. “We have tried to show the great masterpieces like the blue Self Portrait, for example, that hardly ever leave the museum, and display them alongside a more multidisciplinary Picasso,” Le Bon said. The Spanish artist’s “blue period” from 1901 to 1904, which focused especially on the poor and marginalised, such as prostitutes and drunks, features prominently in the selected works, added exhibition curator Emilia Philippot. “These are very political subjects in a way,” she said. Transporting all the works to China brought its own challenges. The insurers for the works, which are valued at more than 800 million euros ($900 million) insisted that the pieces travel on seven separate planes, the organisers said. (afp)

Earlier, the academy broadcast a video in which former first lady Michelle Obama said she is a fan of Elliott, who is 47. Singer Lizzo and rapper Da Brat paid tribute to Elliott by performing some of her songs. Before Elliott, two other rappers had made it into the hall of fame: Jermaine Dupri last year and Jay-Z in 2017.
Elliott first tasted success as a producer and writer for other artists before launching a solo career. Working with producer Timbaland, who shaped some of Elliott’s hip hop and R&B music in the 1990s, she performed with Aaliyah and Destiny’s Child. Also with Timbaland, Elliott released her first album, entitled

“Supa Dupa Fly” in 1997. Her song “The Rain” made her a rap star. She had a series of hit albums and songs in the 1990s, such as “Work It,” “Hot Boyz” and “Get Ur Freak On,” often recorded with other bigname artists. At Thursday’s ceremony the Songwriters Hall of Fame also honored five other creators, including singer Yusuf, formerly known as Cat Stevens, who penned such classics as “Wild World.” Justin Timberlake received a special prize, the Contemporary Icon Award, which celebrates giants of contemporary music. Jokowi opens BAF XLI
Spread the spirit of peace and tolerance
DENPASAR - President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, officially opened the Bali Arts Festival (BAF) XLI as well as released the BAF parade in front of the Bajra Sandi Monument at Niti Mandala Renon, Denpasar, on Saturday (Jun. 15). This time Jokowi did not only take First Lady Iriana but also his son and daughter, namely Gibran Rakabuming and Kahiyang Ayu, his daughter- and son-in-law Selvi Ananda and Bobby Nasution as well as his grandchildren, Sedah Mirah Nasution (Kahiyang-Bobby’s son) and Jan Ethes (Gibran-Selvi’s son) who were following their grandfather’s fame. The presence of Jan Ethes and Sedah Mirah seemed to be a sign that Jokowi is trying to introduce a noble Balinese culture as one of the wealth of the Indonesian people. The BAF usually and officially opened at the Ardha Candra Amphitheater, this year was opened in front of Bajra Sandi Monument, Niti Mandala Renon Denpasar. The opening was simultaneously coupled with the release of the art parade. Upon arriving at the parade area, Jokowi accompanied by
Minister of Education and Culture Muhadjir Effendy, Governor of Bali Wayan Koster, and Chairman of the Bali House of Representatives I Nyoman Adi Wiryatama was welcomed and accompanied by a row of Pendet dancers and mass Baris dancers. Meanwhile, the First Lady Mrs. Iriana Joko Widodo ar-
rived first accompanied by Mrs. Putri Suastini Koster. “Punapi gatrane? Becik nggih? Dumugi para semeton rahajeng sareng sami? (How are you? Are you fine? Hopefully, you are all in good condition),” said Jokowi in Balinese language when greeting the public.
After greeting the community in Balinese language, Jokowi said he did not want to linger in giving a speech because the governor of Bali had previously given a very clear remark regarding the BAF. “By asking for the blessing of Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa (God), this afternoon I open and release the 41st Bali Arts Festival 2019 parade,” he declared. Apparently Jokowi did not immediately hit the kulkul (wooden split drum). But first of all, he expressed his gratitude or matur suksma and had time to ‘recount’ that he had enough difficulty in reciting the ‘thank you’ in Balinese language. “It happens because we have
more than 1,100 regional languages. So, please forgive me if I’m wrong, especially when expressing matur suksema is very difficult for me. It always goes wrong,” he explained and then hit the kulkul marking the official opening of the BAF as well as the release of the art parade. Continued to page 6
