U.S. actress Anne Hathaway named as goodwill ambassador

NEW YORK - O scar-winning actress Anne Hathaway has been appointed a Goodwill Ambassador for UN Women, a role which will focus on addressing the unequal burden shouldered by women caring for children in the home, the U.N. organization said on Wednesday. Women around the world face a so-called motherhood penalty, meaning when they have children, they lose pay and opportunity in the workplace, according to UN Women, which promotes gender equality and economic empowerment. The U.N. body seeks to make raising children an equal responsibility for mothers and fathers, said Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, executive director of UN Women. “Stereotypes that make it hard for fathers to take time away from work to care for a child are outdated leftovers from the ‘male breadwinner’ model and have no place in today’s mixed workforce,” she said in a statement. Hathaway, who won an Academy Award in 2013 for her role in “Les Miserables,” is a long-time supporter of women’s rights who will promote policies such as affordable childcare and parental leave, said MlamboNgcuka.

“To make the case for how this will increase opportunities for

women, we needed an advocate who had the intellect and passion to tackle this complex issue. Within moments of meeting Anne, I realized that we had found our woman,” she said. EU Operation ‘Encourages’ Illegal Migrants

TRIPOLI - The Libyan coastguard has told that the EU’s Operation Sophia, which was devised to prevent people smuggling, is actually encouraging illegal migrants to make the perilous journey to Europe. Libya has become one of the main routes to the continent following a controversial EU deal with Turkey to close down the crossing to Greece across the Aegean Sea. Under international law Europe’s naval vessels cannot enter Libyan waters; instead they must stay at least 12 nautical miles from the shore. It means smugglers can take advantage by dragging boats out to sea and then setting

their course for international waters - and providing they do not stray from Libyan waters they face no chance of getting caught. Inspection of the Denpasar Food and Drug Control (BBPOM) encountered some foods declared positive to contain borax and formaldehyde. Such hazardous substances were found in two samples of rice crackers, as well as in one sample of fish twisted satay and one sample of skewer satay.

Regional library lacks of bookmobile vehicles

TABANAN - In order to increase the interest in reading, especially among rural residents, the Tabanan Regional Library held a bookmobile service. As a result, it is found that reading interest in the countryside is actually very high. Unfortunately, due to lack of facilities, in this case bookmobile service to rural areas, the service cannot be done optimally. Library Fund and Service Section Head, I Gusti Agung Srihati, said that currently the library has only one bookmobile unit. In total there are about hundreds of elementary, junior high, high school and vocational schools and general public at villages to be visited by the bookmobile service. Seeing this fact, the bookmobile is considered inadequate coupled with busy schedule and extensive coverage. The bookmobile currently owned is the assistance of the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia in 2007. His agency had proposed for the assistance of another bookmobile in the Joy Reading Movement at the Maria Town Hall last March to the Head of the National Library and he expected it can be realized soon. DENPASAR - Barong and rangda are well known as the symbols of rwa bhineda or basic dualism. What happens then when the barong and rangda are then staged in the pelegongan composition style? The Semara Pegulingan Citta Kelangen art studio from Sidakarya Denpasar, responded it through the performance of Legong Dance entitled Mimba Pralaya at the 38th Bali Arts Festival at the Angsoka Stage, Art Center, Wednesday (Jun. 15). It is narrated that Ratu Niang with the nickname Rangda Jro Agung is angry and will make a disaster for anyone who will hold initiation rite for high priest. As a result, tense atmosphere occurred in the surrounding communities of Mimba forest. After hearing the incident, the king then sent his vice regent Gusti Made Lor to investigate and resolve the issue. Unavoidably, fierce battle occurred between Gusti Made Lor and Rangda, leading to the defeat of Gusti Made Lor. After that, the king presented Bima Rampag composition to defeat the Rangda Jro Agung. Predictably, the victory finally takes side in virtues. “There has been many storylines on rwa bhineda. The dif-

ference in the current performance is that I am displaying barong and rangda through pelegongan. The performance begins with Legong and then closed with Legong as well,” said the choreographer of Mimba Pralaya,” I Nyoman Suarsa. Suarsa told there is a challenge in this Legong composition. As long as one month of the preparation, there are quite a lot of thought to be applied. Composition of Legong should not be out of the existing norms. The style of Legong composition includes papeson (opening), pengawak (main part), pengencet (development of the main part) and pekaad (closing). “I have been working on this

composition for one month. Actually, it is not too long because it is handled by those having enough techniques. Otherwise, it may take long time as well because the players have been quite familiar with the techniques of the dance. The rangda, for instance, is indeed played by rangda dancer and so is the barong by barong dancer. Thus, we just need to harmonize them when each player must go out,” he explained. More interestingly, the dancers and gamelan players in this performance are dominated by school children. Gamelan music arranger, I Wayan Reza Permana Putra, said that a total of 28 gamelan musicians and 13 dancers are involved in the performance. “Some of them are students of elementary school to high school. Last year we also appeared in the BAF,” he said. Before staging the Mimba Pralaya, the Citta Kelangen art studio also presented the petegak semara pegulingan gamelan composition entitled Patra Sari and the welcome dance Wijaya Kusuma. (kmb32)

Dozens of whales stranded in Indonesia’s Java island, 10 die

PROBOLINGGO — More than 30 whales were stranded on a beach on Indonesia’s main island of Java and 10 of them have died, an official said Thursday. A mass rescue operation managed to pull most of the stranded whales into the deep sea, said Wahid Noor Azis, head of the local Fishery and Maritime management. Wahid said the whales began stranding themselves during high tide Wednesday on the coast of Pesisir village in Probolinggo district in the province of East Java. The whales, numbering about 32

to 35, are likely short-finned pilot whales, which live in tropical and subtropical waters, Wahid said. Dozens of locals using two boats were trying to drive the last two stranded whales still alive into the deep sea.

The provincial Conservation and Natural Resources Agency will be conducting autopsies on the 10 dead whales to find out why they became stranded, Wahid said. The locals would bury the carcasses of the dead whales after the autopsies. Pilot whales are among the largest of the oceanic dolphins, exceeded in size only by the killer whale. They are also among the most common cetaceans stranded.(ap)

According to the head of state, drug abuse, terrorism, and corruption were the three types of crimes that need to be addressed promptly. The president expressed optimism that the Indonesian House of Representatives would immediately appoint Tito as Indonesias Police chief. “I believe that he has the ability and is a smart person and is also competent,” the president emphasized. President Widodo explained that the process to nominate Karnavian was in accordance with Law No. 2 of 2002 on the Indonesian Police. He said the government had sought inputs from several parties, including the National Police Commission, Police, and Indonesian people. Karnavian is currently the head of the Terrorism Countermeasures Agency. He had earlier served as head of the Papuan Regional Police and Jakarta Regional Police. Karnavian was also the top graduate of the Police Academy in 1977. Karnavian also earned a doctorate degree from the Rajaratnam School of International Studies at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and a masters degree from the University of Exeter, England. JAKARTA - The National Anti Narcotics Agency (BNN) has revealed that nine pieces of steel pipe with methamphetamine concealed inside, were recovered from a house in Penjaringan village, North Jakarta, and originally came from Guangzhou, China. “It is the third for the drugs syndicate to receive a thick steel pipe with methamphetamine concealed inside,” the Chief of BNN Budi Waseso said at a press conference, which was also attended by the Customs and Excise Director General Heru Prambudi here on Wednesday. At the time of the drugs being searched, BNN had confiscated nine pieces of steel pipe with 50 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine concealed in the pipes. According to Waseso, BNN has detained five suspects identified by their initials as HE, EN, ED, GN and DD. “HE is a former Cipinang Prison inmate, who is now on conditional release. HE used ENs identity to open an account and an address to send goods,” he explained. Waseso further said that the methamphetamine had just arrived a week ago from China and was raided at one of the houses in the Rawa Bebek area, which produces noodles. This mode of using a pipe to smuggle drugs is difficult to detect. Waseso, who directly led the drug search, said his office has long investigated the case and made arrests after collecting sufficient evidence. Earlier, the Deputy Chief of BNNs Drug Eradication Affairs branch, Inspector General Arman Depari, stated on Tuesday that the nine pieces of pipe, made of steel, weighed between 130 and 190 kilograms each and were four centimeters thick. As anti-narcotic agents cut open one of the pipes, they found the best quality methamphetamine inside, wrapped in aluminum foil, he disclosed.(ant)

The John Lethbridge, a search boat contracted by the Egyptian government, is working against the clock to locate the “black boxes” that investigators say will help explain why Flight MS804 crashed on May 19, killing all 66 people on board. Signals from the flight data recorders needed to track them down on the seabed are expected to expire on June 24.
