U.S. actress Anne Hathaway named as goodwill ambassador

NEW YORK - O scar-winning actress Anne Hathaway has been appointed a Goodwill Ambassador for UN Women, a role which will focus on addressing the unequal burden shouldered by women caring for children in the home, the U.N. organization said on Wednesday.

Women around the world face a so-called motherhood penalty, meaning when they have children, they lose pay and opportunity in the workplace, according to UN Women, which promotes gender equality and economic empowerment.

The U.N. body seeks to make raising children an equal responsibility for mothers and fathers, said Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, executive director of UN Women.

“Stereotypes that make it hard for fathers to take time away from work to care for a child are outdated leftovers from the ‘male breadwinner’ model and have no place in today’s mixed workforce,” she said in a statement.

Hathaway, who won an Academy Award in 2013 for her role in “Les Miserables,” is a long-time supporter of women’s rights who will promote policies such as affordable childcare and parental leave, said MlamboNgcuka.

“To make the case for how this will increase opportunities for

women, we needed an advocate who had the intellect and passion to tackle this complex issue. Within moments of meeting Anne, I realized that we had found our woman,” she said.

Known for her roles in “The Devil Wears Prada,” “Brokeback Mountain” and “The Dark Knight Rises,” Hathaway also co-hosted the Academy Awards ceremony with actor James Franco in 2011.

She has served as an advocate for Nike Foundation, traveled to Kenya and Ethiopia to raise awareness on child marriage and narrated “Girl Rising,” a CNN documentary film on female education.

“I feel honored and inspired by this opportunity to aid in advancing gender equality,” the actress said in a statement. (rtr)

EU Operation ‘Encourages’ Illegal Migrants

TRIPOLI - The Libyan coastguard has told that the EU’s Operation Sophia, which was devised to prevent people smuggling, is actually encouraging illegal migrants to make the perilous journey to Europe.

Libya has become one of the main routes to the continent following a controversial EU deal with Turkey to close down the crossing to Greece across the Aegean Sea. Under international law Europe’s naval vessels cannot enter Libyan waters; instead they must stay at least 12 nautical miles from the shore.

It means smugglers can take advantage by dragging boats out to sea and then setting

their course for international waters - and providing they do not stray from Libyan waters they face no chance of getting caught.

He also says that the migration crisis is getting worse and by the end of the year a record number of illegal migrants will have made their way across the Mediterranean to Europe. Part of the problem is that Libya simply does not have the resources it needs

to cope.

In the Misrata area there are only two boats that are operational to police the coastline. The others have been redeployed to fight Islamic State.

DENPASAR - Selection process apparently does not guarantee if culinary booths in the area the Bali Arts Festival (BAF) is free from harmful foods. Inspection of the Denpasar Food and Drug Control (BBPOM) encountered some foods declared positive to contain borax and formaldehyde. Such hazardous substances were found in two samples of rice crackers, as well as in one sample of fish twisted satay and one sample of skewer satay.

The result poses an initial identification that will be tested in laboratory. Her agency will also explore the raw ingredient of fish because the merchant admitted to purchase it from another

merchant.

“With this case, we will come down again here and we provide them with coaching,” she added.

Endang admitted that she already asked the merchants whose merchandise is positive to borax and formaldehyde not to sell such a food any longer to BAF visitors.

According to her, the effects of consuming food containing hazardous substance are not immediately felt after eating.

“When free radicals come into human body, they will become the trigger of cancer. The longer accumulates, it will emerge if people are continuously exposed in five to ten years in the future,” he explained.

Regional library lacks of bookmobile vehicles

TABANAN - In order to increase the interest in reading, especially among rural residents, the Tabanan Regional Library held a bookmobile service. As a result, it is found that reading interest in the countryside is actually very high. Unfortunately, due to lack of facilities, in this case bookmobile service to rural areas, the service cannot be done optimally.

Library Fund and Service Section Head, I Gusti Agung Srihati, said that currently the library has only one bookmobile unit. This amount is not enough to reach schools at 133 villages throughout Tabanan.

On the other hand, the rural communities and school children are quite enthusiastic with the bookmobile visit. “For example, at Pupuan village people requested us to make a visit,” she said.

Aside from consisting of one unit, the bookmobile cannot accommodate many visitors and can only be entered by three people due to the collection of books in the vehicle so that it seems crowded when many visitors come in to read.

The Head of the Tabanan Libraries and Archives, I Wayan Darma, said that the bookmobile service is scheduled four times a week from Monday to Thursday. In total there are about hundreds of elementary, junior high, high school and vocational schools and general public at villages to be visited by the bookmobile service.

Seeing this fact, the bookmobile is considered inadequate coupled with busy schedule and extensive coverage.

The bookmobile currently owned is the assistance of the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia in 2007. His agency had proposed for the assistance of another bookmobile in the Joy Reading Movement at the Maria Town Hall last March to the Head of the National Library and he expected it can be realized soon. DENPASAR - Barong and rangda are well known as the symbols of rwa bhineda or basic dualism. What happens then when the barong and rangda are then staged in the pelegongan composition style? The Semara Pegulingan Citta Kelangen art studio from Sidakarya Denpasar, responded it through the performance of Legong Dance entitled Mimba Pralaya at the 38th Bali Arts Festival at the Angsoka Stage, Art Center, Wednesday (Jun. 15).

It is narrated that Ratu Niang with the nickname Rangda Jro Agung is angry and will make a disaster for anyone who will hold initiation rite for high priest. As a result, tense atmosphere occurred in the surrounding communities of Mimba forest.

After hearing the incident, the king then sent his vice regent Gusti Made Lor to investigate and resolve the issue. Unavoidably, fierce battle occurred between Gusti Made Lor and Rangda, leading to the defeat of Gusti Made Lor. After that, the king presented Bima Rampag composition to defeat the Rangda Jro Agung. Predictably, the victory finally takes side in virtues.

“There has been many storylines on rwa bhineda. The dif-

ference in the current performance is that I am displaying barong and rangda through pelegongan. The performance begins with Legong and then closed with Legong as well,” said the choreographer of Mimba Pralaya,” I Nyoman Suarsa.

Suarsa told there is a challenge in this Legong composition. As long as one month of the preparation, there are quite a lot of thought to be applied. Composition of Legong should not be out of the existing norms. The style of Legong composition includes papeson (opening), pengawak (main part), pengencet (development of the main part) and pekaad (closing).

“I have been working on this

composition for one month. Actually, it is not too long because it is handled by those having enough techniques. Otherwise, it may take long time as well because the players have been quite familiar with the techniques of the dance.

The rangda, for instance, is indeed played by rangda dancer and so is the barong by barong dancer. Thus, we just need to harmonize them when each player must go out,” he explained.

More interestingly, the dancers and gamelan players in this performance are dominated by school children. Gamelan music arranger, I Wayan Reza Permana Putra, said that a total of 28 gamelan musicians and 13 dancers are involved in the performance. “Some of them are students of elementary school to high school. Last year we also appeared in the BAF,” he said. The controversy over the abbot, Phra Dhammachayo, 72, in part reflects more than a decade of divisive politics in Thailand, which has permeated all aspects of life, including Buddhism.

The abbot is accused of conspiring to launder money by accepting cash stolen from a credit union.

But many of his supporters suspect he has been targeted because of perceived links to political opponents of the military-dominated establishment.

Officials from the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) turning up at the abbot’s Wat Dhammakaya temple complex found rows of followers sitting silently in the rain.

“The temple is being partly cooperative, but when we went inside we were blocked by a group of devotees,” DSI deputy chief Police Major Suriya Singhakamol told reporters.

The DSI is a department of the justice ministry that deals with investigations of high-ranking officials.

The failed bid to enter the wealthy and influential temple was broadcast live on national television.

Suriya said a police search warrant was only valid until 6 p.m.

Citing ill health, the abbot failed to appear at a police station to answer graft charges in May. His followers reject the accusations against him saying the charges are politically motivated because of the temple’s perceived links with populist former premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

A former telecoms tycoon, Thaksin was overthrown in a 2006 coup and has lived in self-exile since 2008 but remains influential.

The ruling junta, which in 2014 overthrew a government led by Thaksin’s sister, Yingluck Shinawatra, has not commented on the attempted raid and appears reluctant to take sides on a religious issue.

SHANGHAI - Walt Disney Co has opened the gates to its first theme park in China, prompting a rush from thousands of gathered Mickey Mouse enthusiasts to be the first to storm Treasure Cove, ride the Roaring Rapids or visit Disney’s tallest castle.

Disney’s largest overseas investment at $5.5 billion, the park is a bet on China’s middle class and booming domestic tourism.

The U.S. firm hopes it will offset an otherwise lacklustre international theme park business, better known for cash-burning sites such as Euro Disney.

“This is one of the proudest and most exciting moments in the history of the Walt Disney Company,” chief executive Bob Iger said at the official ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, where he was flanked by Chinese government officials.

Iger and Chinese Vice Premier Wang Yang read out letters of support from Barack Obama and President Xi Jinping.

Not everything has gone quite to plan though.

Disney estimates 330 million people within a three-hour radius of Shanghai will be able to afford to come to the park: that includes Zhao Qiong, 36, who was one of the first visitors inside the park on Thursday with her 4-yearold daughter.

“Since she was young, my little girl has always loved Disney princesses, so I wanted to bring her to the park to fulfil her dream,” she told Reuters. (rtr)

BUENOS AIRES — Argentina’s newly revamped official statistics agency said Wednesday that inflation rose 4.2 percent in May from the previous month.

The first inflation figures released since President Mauricio Macri took office in December showed that the numbers continue to rise despite his promises to tame skyrocketing consumer prices.

Macri’s government revamped the questioned national statistics agency in an effort to encourage foreign investment and regain lost credibility in South America’s second-largest economy. The agency has launched a new index, using

data as the previous one did from consumer prices in metropolitan Buenos Aires area.

“Resuming the publication of a key macro statistic is a very welcome development,” said Goldman Sachs analyst Alberto Ramos.

Dozens of whales stranded in Indonesia’s Java island, 10 die

PROBOLINGGO — More than 30 whales were stranded on a beach on Indonesia’s main island of Java and 10 of them have died, an official said Thursday. A mass rescue operation managed to pull most of the stranded whales into the deep sea, said Wahid Noor Azis, head of the local Fishery and Maritime management.

Wahid said the whales began stranding themselves during high tide Wednesday on the coast of Pesisir village in Probolinggo district in the province of East Java.

The whales, numbering about 32

to 35, are likely short-finned pilot whales, which live in tropical and subtropical waters, Wahid said.

Dozens of locals using two boats were trying to drive the last two stranded whales still alive into the deep sea.

The provincial Conservation and Natural Resources Agency will be conducting autopsies on the 10 dead whales to find out why they became stranded, Wahid said. The locals would bury the carcasses of the dead whales after the autopsies.

Pilot whales are among the largest of the oceanic dolphins, exceeded in size only by the killer whale. They are also among the most common cetaceans stranded.(ap)

RI stresses on intl law on South China Sea issue JAKARTA - The Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Retno Marsudi, has urged countries involved in the South China Sea dispute to respect the importance of international laws, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982.

“Without respecting international law, peace and stability will be difficult to achieve,” Foreign Minister Retno said in a press statement received by ANTARA here on Wednesday.

The statement was issued by the minister following discussions on the

situation in the South China Sea at the Foreign Affairs Ministers Special Meeting of ASEAN-China in Kunming, China on June13 and 14.

The meeting, which was attended by the ASEAN and Chinese Foreign Affairs Ministers, discussed preparations for the 25th anniversary of the ASEAN-China partnership and regional issues, including the situation in the South China Sea. The ministers considered commemorating 25 years of ASEAN-China partnership, saying cooperation for peace and prosperity has become

increasingly relevant.

Regional peace and stability should be maintained in order to ensure the continued development of ASEAN member countries and China.

“Indonesia hopes that cooperation will create peace and prosperity, which will be translated with real actions,” Minister Retno said.

“I hope Commissioner General Tito Karnavian will increase professionalism in the police force, as the peoples protector, and improve the quality of the law enforcement process,” the president remarked here on Thursday.

According to the head of state, drug abuse, terrorism, and corruption were the three types of crimes that need to be addressed promptly.

The president expressed optimism that the Indonesian House of Representatives would immediately appoint Tito as Indonesias Police chief. “I believe that he has the ability and is a smart person and is also competent,” the president emphasized.

President Widodo explained that the process to nominate Karnavian was in accordance with Law No. 2 of 2002 on the Indonesian Police. He said the government had sought inputs from several parties, including the National Police Commission, Police, and Indonesian people.

Karnavian is currently the head of the Terrorism Countermeasures Agency. He had earlier served as head of the Papuan Regional Police and Jakarta Regional Police. Karnavian was also the top graduate of the Police Academy in 1977.

Karnavian also earned a doctorate degree from the Rajaratnam School of International Studies at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and a masters degree from the University of Exeter, England. Meanwhile, the current Indonesian Police Chief General Badrodin Haiti will be replaced as he is due to retire in July 2016.(ant)

Pipe containing methamphetamine comes from China: BNN chief

JAKARTA - The National Anti Narcotics Agency (BNN) has revealed that nine pieces of steel pipe with methamphetamine concealed inside, were recovered from a house in Penjaringan village, North Jakarta, and originally came from Guangzhou, China.

“It is the third for the drugs syndicate to receive a thick steel pipe with methamphetamine concealed inside,” the Chief of BNN Budi Waseso said at a press conference, which was also attended by the Customs and Excise Director General Heru Prambudi here on Wednesday.

At the time of the drugs being searched, BNN had confiscated nine pieces of steel pipe with 50 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine concealed in the pipes. According to Waseso, BNN has detained five suspects identified by their initials as HE, EN, ED, GN and DD. “HE is a former Cipinang Prison inmate, who is now on conditional release. HE used ENs identity to open an account and an address to send goods,” he explained.

Waseso further said that the methamphetamine had just arrived a week ago from China and was raided at one of the houses in the Rawa Bebek area, which produces noodles. This mode of using a pipe to smuggle drugs is difficult to detect.

Waseso, who directly led the drug search, said his office has long investigated the case and made arrests after collecting sufficient evidence.

Earlier, the Deputy Chief of BNNs Drug Eradication Affairs branch, Inspector General Arman Depari, stated on Tuesday that the nine pieces of pipe, made of steel, weighed between 130 and 190 kilograms each and were four centimeters thick.

As anti-narcotic agents cut open one of the pipes, they found the best quality methamphetamine inside, wrapped in aluminum foil, he disclosed.(ant)

CAIRO - The main locations of wreckage from the EgyptAir jet that crashed in the eastern Mediterranean last month have been identified by a vessel owned by Deep Ocean Search, the Egyptian-led investigation committee said Wednesday.

The John Lethbridge, a search boat contracted by the Egyptian government, is working against the clock to locate the “black boxes” that investigators say will help explain why Flight MS804 crashed on May 19, killing all 66 people on board.

Signals from the flight data recorders needed to track them down on the seabed are expected to expire on June 24.

The John Lethbridge has provided the first images of wreckage to investigators. A search team on board along with investigators will now draw a map of the wreckage’s distribution spots, the committee said in a statement.

It was not immediately known which parts of the plane had been found, nor whether the two flight recorders were nearby. The recorders, one for voice and another for

data, were contained in the tail of the Airbus A320.

Previously collected debris will also be handed over to the investigation committee after “standard procedures” are completed by prosecutors who are currently holding it for forensic evidence, the statement added.

NEW YORK - Four Olympic weightlifting champions from Kazakhstan, including the sport’s most celebrated figure Ilya Ilyin, are among 10 lifters to have tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs at the London 2012 Olympics after their samples were reanalysed.

Ilyin, the men’s 94kg gold medallist, and three women champions, Zulfiya Chinshanlo (53kg), Maiya Maneza (63kg) and Svetlana Podobedova (75kg), failed tests, the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) said on Wednesday.

The 10 lifters, who include seven London medallists in total and a current world champion and who were expected to be medal contenders at the Rio de Janeiro Games in August, have all been provisionally suspended, the IWF said.

Double Olympic champion Ilyin, 28, tested positive for dehydrochloromethyltestosterone and stanozolol when the International Olympic Committee reanalysed 2012 samples, the IWF announced.

Ilyin is to weightlifting what Usain Bolt is to athletics. He has nearly 400,000 followers on social media -- far more than anyone else in the sport -- and has been named male weightlifter of the year four times.

A winner of the sport’s leading accolade in 2005, 2006, 2014 and 2015, four-time world champion Ilyin is a national hero and also a personal friend of Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev.

His victory in London followed his triumph in Beijing in 2008. A multiple world record holder, he was confident of winning a third gold, at 105kg, in Rio. Murray has not won a grand slam since parting ways with Lendl in March 2014 after two years in which he won the 2012 Olympic gold, the 2012 U.S. Open and the 2013 Wimbledon titles.

The two rekindled their partnership on Sunday and are already plotting to stop Djokovic, the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to hold all four grand slam titles at the same time.

NEW YORK - Four Olympic weightlifting champions from Kazakhstan, including the sport’s most celebrated figure Ilya Ilyin, are among 10 lifters to have tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs at the London 2012 Olympics after their samples were reanalysed.

Ilyin, the men’s 94kg gold medallist, and three women champions, Zulfiya Chinshanlo (53kg), Maiya Maneza (63kg) and Svetlana Podobedova (75kg), failed tests, the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) said on Wednesday.

The 10 lifters, who include seven London medallists in total and a current world champion and who were expected to be medal contenders at the Rio de Janeiro Games in August, have all been provisionally suspended, the IWF said.

Double Olympic champion Ilyin, 28, tested positive for dehydrochloromethyltestosterone and stanozolol when the International Olympic Committee reanalysed 2012 samples, the IWF announced.

Ilyin is to weightlifting what Usain Bolt is to athletics. He has nearly 400,000 followers on social media -- far more than anyone else in the sport -- and has been named male weightlifter of the year four times.

A winner of the sport’s leading accolade in 2005, 2006, 2014 and 2015, four-time world champion Ilyin is a national hero and also a personal friend of Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev.

His victory in London followed his triumph in Beijing in 2008. A multiple world record holder, he was confident of winning a third gold, at 105kg, in Rio. Ilyin, who turned vegetarian and took a break from competition after the London Games, set his latest world records at the President’s Cup in Moscow in December. He had never failed a test before. Andy Murray has what it takes to ruin Novak Djokovic’s dreams of sweeping to a ‘golden slam’, coach Ivan Lendl has said as the Scot prepares for another tilt at the Wimbledon title.

Murray has not won a grand slam since parting ways with Lendl in March 2014 after two years in which he won the 2012 Olympic gold, the 2012 U.S. Open and the 2013 Wimbledon titles.

The two rekindled their partnership on Sunday and are already plotting to stop Djokovic, the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to hold all four grand slam titles at the same time.

The Serb has won the French and Australian titles this year and victory at Wimbledon and the US Open in August would give him a calendar-year grand slam. Adding gold at the Olympics in Rio would see him seal the

CAIRO - The main locations of wreckage from the EgyptAir jet that crashed in the eastern Mediterranean last month have been identified by a vessel owned by Deep Ocean Search, the Egyptian-led investigation committee said Wednesday.

The John Lethbridge, a search boat contracted by the Egyptian government, is working against the clock to locate the “black boxes” that investigators say will help explain why Flight MS804 crashed on May 19, killing all 66 people on board.

Signals from the flight data recorders needed to track them down on the seabed are expected to expire on June 24.

The John Lethbridge has provided the first images of wreckage to investigators. A search team on board along with investigators will now draw a map of the wreckage’s distribution spots, the committee said in a statement.

It was not immediately known which parts of the plane had been found, nor whether the two flight recorders were nearby. The recorders, one for voice and another for

data, were contained in the tail of the Airbus A320.

BUENOS AIRES — Argentina’s newly revamped official statistics agency said Wednesday that inflation rose 4.2 percent in May from the previous month.

The first inflation figures released since President Mauricio Macri took office in December showed that the numbers continue to rise despite his promises to tame skyrocketing consumer prices.

Macri’s government revamped the questioned national statistics agency in an effort to encourage foreign investment and regain lost credibility in South America’s second-largest economy. The agency has launched a new index, using

data as the previous one did from consumer prices in metropolitan Buenos Aires area.

“Resuming the publication of a key macro statistic is a very welcome development,” said Goldman Sachs analyst Alberto Ramos.

“But the new figure also shows that inflationary pressures are still very high.”

Dozens of whales stranded in Indonesia’s Java island, 10 die

PROBOLINGGO — More than 30 whales were stranded on a beach on Indonesia’s main island of Java and 10 of them have died, an official said Thursday. A mass rescue operation managed to pull most of the stranded whales into the deep sea, said Wahid Noor Azis, head of the local Fishery and Maritime management.

Wahid said the whales began stranding themselves during high tide Wednesday on the coast of Pesisir village in Probolinggo district in the province of East Java.

The whales, numbering about 32

to 35, are likely short-finned pilot whales, which live in tropical and subtropical waters, Wahid said.

Dozens of locals using two boats were trying to drive the last two stranded whales still alive into the deep sea.

The provincial Conservation and Natural Resources Agency will be conducting autopsies on the 10 dead whales to find out why they became stranded, Wahid said. The locals would bury the carcasses of the dead whales after the autopsies.

Pilot whales are among the largest of the oceanic dolphins, exceeded in size only by the killer whale. They are also among the most common cetaceans stranded.(ap)

RI stresses on intl law on South China Sea issue JAKARTA - The Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Retno Marsudi, has urged countries involved in the South China Sea dispute to respect the importance of international laws, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982.

“Without respecting international law, peace and stability will be difficult to achieve,” Foreign Minister Retno said in a press statement received by ANTARA here on Wednesday.

The statement was issued by the minister following discussions on the

situation in the South China Sea at the Foreign Affairs Ministers Special Meeting of ASEAN-China in Kunming, China on June13 and 14.

The meeting, which was attended by the ASEAN and Chinese Foreign Affairs Ministers, discussed preparations for the 25th anniversary of the ASEAN-China partnership and regional issues, including the situation in the South China Sea. The ministers considered commemorating 25 years of ASEAN-China partnership, saying cooperation for peace and prosperity has become

increasingly relevant.

Regional peace and stability should be maintained in order to ensure the continued development of ASEAN member countries and China.

“Indonesia hopes that cooperation will create peace and prosperity, which will be translated with real actions,” Minister Retno said.

JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said he had called on Commissioner General Tito Karnavian, the candidate for the post of Indonesias police head, to improve the law enforcement process in the country.

“I hope Commissioner General Tito Karnavian will increase professionalism in the police force, as the peoples protector, and improve the quality of the law enforcement process,” the president remarked here on Thursday.

According to the head of state, drug abuse, terrorism, and corruption were the three types of crimes that need to be addressed promptly.

The president expressed optimism that the Indonesian House of Representatives would immediately appoint Tito as Indonesias Police chief. “I believe that he has the ability and is a smart person and is also competent,” the president emphasized.

President Widodo explained that the process to nominate Karnavian was in accordance with Law No. 2 of 2002 on the Indonesian Police. He said the government had sought inputs from several parties, including the National Police Commission, Police, and Indonesian people.

Karnavian is currently the head of the Terrorism Countermeasures Agency. He had earlier served as head of the Papuan Regional Police and Jakarta Regional Police. Karnavian was also the top graduate of the Police Academy in 1977.

Karnavian also earned a doctorate degree from the Rajaratnam School of International Studies at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and a masters degree from the University of Exeter, England. Meanwhile, the current Indonesian Police Chief General Badrodin Haiti will be replaced as he is due to retire in July 2016.(ant)

Pipe containing methamphetamine comes from China: BNN chief

JAKARTA - The National Anti Narcotics Agency (BNN) has revealed that nine pieces of steel pipe with methamphetamine concealed inside, were recovered from a house in Penjaringan village, North Jakarta, and originally came from Guangzhou, China.

“It is the third for the drugs syndicate to receive a thick steel pipe with methamphetamine concealed inside,” the Chief of BNN Budi Waseso said at a press conference, which was also attended by the Customs and Excise Director General Heru Prambudi here on Wednesday.

At the time of the drugs being searched, BNN had confiscated nine pieces of steel pipe with 50 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine concealed in the pipes. According to Waseso, BNN has detained five suspects identified by their initials as HE, EN, ED, GN and DD. “HE is a former Cipinang Prison inmate, who is now on conditional release. HE used ENs identity to open an account and an address to send goods,” he explained.

Waseso further said that the methamphetamine had just arrived a week ago from China and was raided at one of the houses in the Rawa Bebek area, which produces noodles. This mode of using a pipe to smuggle drugs is difficult to detect.

Waseso, who directly led the drug search, said his office has long investigated the case and made arrests after collecting sufficient evidence.

Earlier, the Deputy Chief of BNNs Drug Eradication Affairs branch, Inspector General Arman Depari, stated on Tuesday that the nine pieces of pipe, made of steel, weighed between 130 and 190 kilograms each and were four centimeters thick.

As anti-narcotic agents cut open one of the pipes, they found the best quality methamphetamine inside, wrapped in aluminum foil, he disclosed.(ant)

Regional library lacks of bookmobile vehicles

TABANAN - In order to increase the interest in reading, especially among rural residents, the Tabanan Regional Library held a bookmobile service. As a result, it is found that reading interest in the countryside is actually very high. Unfortunately, due to lack of facilities, in this case bookmobile service to rural areas, the service cannot be done optimally.

Library Fund and Service Section Head, I Gusti Agung Srihati, said that currently the library has only one bookmobile unit. This amount is not enough to reach schools at 133 villages throughout Tabanan.

The Head of the Tabanan Libraries and Archives, I Wayan Darma, said that the bookmobile service is scheduled four times a week from Monday to Thursday. In total there are about hundreds of elementary, junior high, high school and vocational schools and general public at villages to be visited by the bookmobile service.

Seeing this fact, the bookmobile is considered inadequate coupled with busy schedule and extensive coverage.

The bookmobile currently owned is the assistance of the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia in 2007. His agency had proposed for the assistance of another bookmobile in the Joy Reading Movement at the Maria Town Hall last March to the Head of the National Library and he expected it can be realized soon. DENPASAR - Barong and rangda are well known as the symbols of rwa bhineda or basic dualism. What happens then when the barong and rangda are then staged in the pelegongan composition style? The Semara Pegulingan Citta Kelangen art studio from Sidakarya Denpasar, responded it through the performance of Legong Dance entitled Mimba Pralaya at the 38th Bali Arts Festival at the Angsoka Stage, Art Center, Wednesday (Jun. 15).

It is narrated that Ratu Niang with the nickname Rangda Jro Agung is angry and will make a disaster for anyone who will hold initiation rite for high priest. As a result, tense atmosphere occurred in the surrounding communities of Mimba forest.

After hearing the incident, the king then sent his vice regent Gusti Made Lor to investigate and resolve the issue. Unavoidably, fierce battle occurred between Gusti Made Lor and Rangda, leading to the defeat of Gusti Made Lor. After that, the king presented Bima Rampag composition to defeat the Rangda Jro Agung. Predictably, the victory finally takes side in virtues.

“There has been many storylines on rwa bhineda. The dif-

ference in the current performance is that I am displaying barong and rangda through pelegongan. The performance begins with Legong and then closed with Legong as well,” said the choreographer of Mimba Pralaya,” I Nyoman Suarsa.

Suarsa told there is a challenge in this Legong composition. As long as one month of the preparation, there are quite a lot of thought to be applied. Composition of Legong should not be out of the existing norms. The style of Legong composition includes papeson (opening), pengawak (main part), pengencet (development of the main part) and pekaad (closing).

“I have been working on this

composition for one month. Actually, it is not too long because it is handled by those having enough techniques. Otherwise, it may take long time as well because the players have been quite familiar with the techniques of the dance.

The rangda, for instance, is indeed played by rangda dancer and so is the barong by barong dancer. Thus, we just need to harmonize them when each player must go out,” he explained.

More interestingly, the dancers and gamelan players in this performance are dominated by school children. Gamelan music arranger, I Wayan Reza Permana Putra, said that a total of 28 gamelan musicians and 13 dancers are involved in the performance. “Some of them are students of elementary school to high school. Last year we also appeared in the BAF,” he said. Before staging the Mimba Pralaya, the Citta Kelangen art studio also presented the petegak semara pegulingan gamelan composition entitled Patra Sari and the welcome dance Wijaya Kusuma. (kmb32)

The controversy over the abbot, Phra Dhammachayo, 72, in part reflects more than a decade of divisive politics in Thailand, which has permeated all aspects of life, including Buddhism.

The abbot is accused of conspiring to launder money by accepting cash stolen from a credit union.

But many of his supporters suspect he has been targeted because of perceived links to political opponents of the military-dominated establishment.

Officials from the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) turning up at the abbot’s Wat Dhammakaya temple complex found rows of followers sitting silently in the rain.

“The temple is being partly cooperative, but when we went inside we were blocked by a group of devotees,” DSI deputy chief Police Major Suriya Singhakamol told reporters.

The DSI is a department of the justice ministry that deals with investigations of high-ranking officials.

The failed bid to enter the wealthy and influential temple was broadcast live on national television.

Scores of riot police, who car-

ried no weapons or batons, waited at a nearby government office but were not deployed.

Suriya said a police search warrant was only valid until 6 p.m.

He said he was “confident” the abbot remained inside the temple.

“This mission is not over,” he said before leaving.

Citing ill health, the abbot failed to appear at a police station to answer graft charges in May. His followers reject the accusations against him saying the charges are politically motivated because of the temple’s perceived links with populist former premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

A former telecoms tycoon, Thaksin was overthrown in a 2006 coup and has lived in self-exile since 2008 but remains influential.

The ruling junta, which in 2014 overthrew a government led by Thaksin’s sister, Yingluck Shinawatra, has not commented on the attempted raid and appears reluctant to take sides on a religious issue.

SHANGHAI - Walt Disney Co has opened the gates to its first theme park in China, prompting a rush from thousands of gathered Mickey Mouse enthusiasts to be the first to storm Treasure Cove, ride the Roaring Rapids or visit Disney’s tallest castle.

Disney’s largest overseas investment at $5.5 billion, the park is a bet on China’s middle class and booming domestic tourism.

The U.S. firm hopes it will offset an otherwise lacklustre international theme park business, better known for cash-burning sites such as Euro Disney.

“This is one of the proudest and most exciting moments in the history of the Walt Disney Company,” chief executive Bob Iger said at the official ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, where he was flanked by Chinese government officials.

Iger and Chinese Vice Premier Wang Yang read out letters of support from Barack Obama and President Xi Jinping.

Not everything has gone quite to plan though.

Such hazardous substances were found in two samples of rice crackers, as well as in one sample of fish twisted satay and one sample of skewer satay.

“With this case, we will come down again here and we provide them with coaching,” she added.

Endang admitted that she already asked the merchants whose merchandise is positive to borax and formaldehyde not to sell such a food any longer to BAF visitors.

According to her, the effects of consuming food containing hazardous substance are not immediately felt after eating.

“When free radicals come into human body, they will become the trigger of cancer. The longer accumulates, it will emerge if people are continuously exposed in five to ten years in the future,” he explained.

U.S. actress Anne Hathaway named as goodwill ambassador

NEW YORK - O scar-winning actress Anne Hathaway has been appointed a Goodwill Ambassador for UN Women, a role which will focus on addressing the unequal burden shouldered by women caring for children in the home, the U.N. organization said on Wednesday.

Women around the world face a so-called motherhood penalty, meaning when they have children, they lose pay and opportunity in the workplace, according to UN Women, which promotes gender equality and economic empowerment.

The U.N. body seeks to make raising children an equal responsibility for mothers and fathers, said Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, executive director of UN Women.

“Stereotypes that make it hard for fathers to take time away from work to care for a child are outdated leftovers from the ‘male breadwinner’ model and have no place in today’s mixed workforce,” she said in a statement.

Hathaway, who won an Academy Award in 2013 for her role in “Les Miserables,” is a long-time supporter of women’s rights who will promote policies such as affordable childcare and parental leave, said MlamboNgcuka.

“To make the case for how this will increase opportunities for

women, we needed an advocate who had the intellect and passion to tackle this complex issue. Within moments of meeting Anne, I realized that we had found our woman,” she said.

Known for her roles in “The Devil Wears Prada,” “Brokeback Mountain” and “The Dark Knight Rises,” Hathaway also co-hosted the Academy Awards ceremony with actor James Franco in 2011.

She has served as an advocate for Nike Foundation, traveled to Kenya and Ethiopia to raise awareness on child marriage and narrated “Girl Rising,” a CNN documentary film on female education.

“I feel honored and inspired by this opportunity to aid in advancing gender equality,” the actress said in a statement. (rtr)

EU Operation ‘Encourages’ Illegal Migrants

TRIPOLI - The Libyan coastguard has told that the EU’s Operation Sophia, which was devised to prevent people smuggling, is actually encouraging illegal migrants to make the perilous journey to Europe.

Libya has become one of the main routes to the continent following a controversial EU deal with Turkey to close down the crossing to Greece across the Aegean Sea. Under international law Europe’s naval vessels cannot enter Libyan waters; instead they must stay at least 12 nautical miles from the shore.

It means smugglers can take advantage by dragging boats out to sea and then setting

their course for international waters - and providing they do not stray from Libyan waters they face no chance of getting caught.

than 13,000 migrants rescued so far.

The coastguard’s head of operations, Colonel Tawfik Alskir, said: “People, when they get rescued, call their friends to tell them that there are EU vessels only 20 miles from Libyan waters to save them.” This, he adds, acts as an incentive for others to risk the journey.

He also says that the migration crisis is getting worse and by the end of the year a record number of illegal migrants will have made their way across the Mediterranean to Europe. Part of the problem is that Libya simply does not have the resources it needs

to cope.

In the Misrata area there are only two boats that are operational to police the coastline. The others have been redeployed to fight Islamic State.
