Kevin Spacey responds to Toronto mayor attack Associated Press Writer

TORONTO — Kevin Spacey on Saturday tweeted a Photoshopped image of himself between Toronto mayor Rob Ford and his brother in response to the siblings’ criticism that he won’t take photos with them. Rob and Doug Ford complained earlier this week that they were told they could not have their picture taken with the actor when Spacey and Rob Ford appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” on Mar 2.

The embattled mayor said he wouldn’t know Spacey “if I ran over him.” Ford’s brother called the actor “an arrogant SOB.” The pair made the comments on their show on YouTube named after the mayor’s supporters.

Along with the photo he tweeted, Spacey said, “When did Mayor Ford start doing what people tell him to do? All you had to do was ask, guys. Here’s your pic.” During Spacey’s appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” the actor cracked several jokes at the mayor’s expense when Spacey appeared after a brief cameo by Ford.

Ford has been under great pressure to resign since he admitted smoking crack last year, and several videos have emerged that showed him seemingly drunk or high. His antics have made him the target of late-night television comedians as well as embarrassed Canadians.

City Council stripped him of many of his powers but does not have the authority to remove him. Undaunted, Ford has vowed to run for re-election this fall.

AUSTIN, Texas — Future had one last spot to fill on his upcoming album and he wanted Kanye West to guest. He sent over a few tracks and what happened next was completely unexpected.

“He picked this ‘I Won’ track,” the Atlanta producer-rapper said Saturday during a two-day stop at South By Southwest. “He did the verse in one day and sent it back. That’s rare when you get a Kanye verse back in one day, so you know it’s one of them records when he does the verse and sends it back in 24 hours. That’s the icing on the cake with the album.”

Future began to debut tracks from “Honest,” out April 22, at the annual music conference and festival on Friday and said he was excited for the wider world to hear what he feels is a very personal album. “Honest” also includes guest appearances from stars like Pharrell, Drake, Andre 3000 and Wiz Khalifa.

West’s appearance on “I Won” is one of the more personal moments, encapsulating how deeply in love each is with the women in their lives. West is engaged to Kim Kardashian and Future will marry Ciara later this year. The song compares their relationships with the feeling of winning a trophy.

“When you have songs like that, they empower women,” he said. “I just

feel like I want to big up women just in general, from my lady to his lady, to all women, to make sure they get their light on them and just knowing they’re important.”

Future has much more going on this year than just the album. He’s got a tour to rehearse for and can’t take all the out-

side production opportunities he’s being offered. He’s also launching an apparel line. That’s just the business side. In his personal life, he’s preparing for the birth of a child with Ciara and trying to plan their wedding. He didn’t want to give away more details, but couldn’t help it as he talked about everything.

SEMARAPURA - A corpse was found washed up on a beach of Sempu Island, Malang Regency on Saturday afternoon. The woman body was found in a state of decay, in which hands, feet, and head were off from body. This corpse suspected to be a master diver, Takashi Soko, who had been lost during a diving activity at Jungut Batu, Nusa Penida, Klungkung Regency last month.

family after Malang’s police suspected that the body was Takashi Soko who’s been missing for a month.

“The body was allegedly the diver because it still wearing

black diving suit complete with oxygen tank in her back,” he said.

Wirajaya, who received information from the local police, explained that the corpse was first

discovered by fishermen on a reef at Watu Nyonya on Friday. Police was contacted by fishermen and searched the area. But high current around the site made the body swept away.

The next day, fishermen from Sempu Island, which is located around 400 meters from previous location, claimed to see similar corpse. After being informed by fishermen, police went to evacuate the body. Consulate General of Japan in Surabaya also had been

contacted by police to identify the body. “The family said they will check directly to Malang,” he said.

Previously, seven Japanese tourists were missing on Friday (14/2) after diving in Jungut Batu, Nusa Penida, Klungkung Regency.

Five of the victims were found alive after local residents, police, army, and search team look for them for four days. One of them was found dead and one still missing. (kmb31)

SINGARAJA - Commitment of the Buleleng government to campaigning the plastic waste-free 2015 was followed by real action namely cleanup activities in the watershed situated around the former Buleleng Harbor, Friday (Mar 14).

DENPASAR - Incident on the loss of Malaysia Airlines with flight number MH370 was horrendous. In Bali, there has been an incident of aircraft crash that may have been forgotten by the people of Bali. However, the monument used to immortalize the 107 victim’s name of the PanAm in 1972 still looks rigid and is even taken advantage for a sanctum by Hindu people in Bali.

The monument was established to commemorate the victims of the PanAm airplane crash in 1972 in Gerokgak Singaraja, where all the 107 passengers and crews died. The passengers consisted of 16 citizens of Australia, Canada (3), China (2), France (18), Germany (5), Indian (1), Indonesia (2), Japan (29), the Philippine (3), Sweden (1) and the USA (27).

The PanAm air plane crash incident posed the most-claimed victim accident, ever in Bali. All the victims were buried at Padanggalak area. This monument designed in Balinese architecture was currently still located in the Ayung River Walk Recreation Park. However, so far the monument was still sturdy adjacent to the Campuhan Temple and Padang Galak Beach.

Even, it has become the sanctum of the Hindus in Bali.

Made Arjaya worshipped to the monument on Saturday afternoon (Mar 15) after a purificatory rite or melukat at Campuhan Temple. He said the presentation of canangsari oblation was intended to give peace to the 107 died passengers. “It is the only offering so those who had passed away could get a peaceful afterlife,” said the man from Tabanan.

This elderly man admitted to still remember the plane crash in 1972 in Gerokgak Singaraja because at the time he was still working at the Ngurah Rai Airport. He complained about the current young people that were less familiar with the historic place. “Many people do no longer remember this historic place, but I still do,” he said. (nik)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Chicago River dyed green for St. Patrick’s Day

CHICAGO — The Chicago River is glowing a bright emerald green Saturday as the city kicks off its St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.

Thousands of cheering onlookers clustered along downtown bridges as members of Chicago Journeymen Plumbers Union Local 130 began dumping containers of dye into the river from motorboats Saturday morning. The annual tradition began at 9:30 a.m. and immediately precedes the St. Patrick’s Day parade.

The union has done the dyeing since 1962. Organizers had feared that large chunks of ice would impede the process, but recent warm temperatures kept the river clear. The hue typically lasts about six to 12 hours.

The parade began at noon. The route winds through downtown and ends at the landmark Buckingham Fountain. A second parade on the city’s South Side takes place Sunday.

LOS ANGELES — An exploratory subway shaft dug just down the street from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art has uncovered a treasure trove of fossils in the land where saber-tooth cats and other early animals once roamed, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday. They include mollusks, asphalt-saturated sand dollars and possibly the mouth of a sea lion dating to 2 million years ago, a time when the Pacific Ocean extended several miles (kilometers) farther inland than it does today.

“Here on the Miracle Mile is where the best record of life from the last great ice age in the world is found,” said paleontologist Kim Scott. The area, dotted today with museums, restaurants, boutiques and apartment buildings, also includes the world-famous La Brea Tar Pits.

It was there that mammoths and saber-toothed cats got stuck in the pits’ oozing muck, which preserved

their skeletons for millennia.

The shaft, dug ahead of work scheduled next year to extend a subway line across LA’s west side, is now revealing far more material, including geoducks, clams, snails, mussels and even a 10-foot (3-meter) limb from a pine tree of the type normally now found in central California’s woodlands.

SAN DIEGO — Veterinarians at the San Diego Zoo have performed an operation on a newborn gorilla that was delivered by cesarean section. The zoo says the 4.6-pound (2 kilogram) female was born Wednesday but seemed to have breathing

problems. On Friday morning, a team fixed a collapsed lung that probably occurred during delivery.

The medical team included vets and two doctors who usually work on humans: a neonatal specialist and an anesthesiologist. Neonatologist Dawn Reeves says the patient was different from human babies because,

among other things, she can grab with both her hands and her feet.

The gorilla will be monitored around the clock as she recovers.

The mother gorilla, named Imani, had never given birth. The zoo says an emergency C-section was performed because she was in distress after going into labor.

Hostel is a backpacker lodge where a room consists of several beds. The type of bed in use is usually bunk bed. Guests usually do not so prioritize the comfort while staying because they spend more time in tourist attractions.

In Badung, the hostels can be found in tourist areas, particularly in Kuta. So far, their amount is still some few. Due to lacking of facilities, it is not surprising if the cost of staying in a hostel is not expensive. The cost to stay is approximately IDR 120,000 per bed per night.

When asked for his confirmation, the Head of Badung Government Tourism Office, Cokorda Raka Darmawan, admitted that Badung had never issued a permit of hostel. According to him, the hostel had not been arranged in a special regulation. So far, the types of accommodation whose permit had been regulated were

hotel, condotel, cottage, villa and rental homes. “We have no regulations about hostel. The name in the licensing has been clear. We do not issue any permit for hostel category,” he said.

Does it mean the hostels operating in Badung have not owned license or can be said illegal?

Raka Darmawan did not dare ascertain. Probably, the hostels used the permit of hotel or the other. “If there are hostels using the permit of hotel, condotel, cottage or others, they are worth exploring. We will coordinate with the team to conduct surveillance,” he said.

Separately, a legislator of the Badung House from Kuta, Wayan Puspa Negara, said on Friday (Mar 14) that from his observations in the field, the newly developed tourist accommodation was not only hostel.

According to him, the new type of the tourist accommodation

had not indeed been specifically regulated, even in the Law No. 10/2009. “In the tourism legislation is clearly mentioned about the types of tourist accommodation. However, the modification of tourist accommodations like hostel and condovilla has not been mentioned specifically,” he said.

He said further that although there were no rules relating to the new types of accommodation, the Badung government should make an effort to anticipate. On the one hand, local government should accommodate the development of accommodation needs of the marketplace. On the other hand, there were norms or rules to be absolutely implemented.

“As long as it does not reduce the cultural resilience, especially the cultural norms, any variety of emerging tourist accommodation is fine,” he said. (kmb25)

DENPASAR - The appreciation of rupiah against the dollar is estimated to depend on the general election activity in 2014. If the political event runs safely, it can make the rupiah against the U.S. dollar stronger.

The Dean of the Faculty of Economics, Mahasaraswati University, Wayan Sujana, said that in recent weeks, the exchange rate of rupiah against the U.S. dollar strengthened in the range of IDR 11,000. The appreciation of rupiah exchange rate could provide benefits for the economy because there were several potentials that could be maximized. The appreciation of rupiah would likely happen again this year.

“The appreciation of rupiah exchange rate is influenced by several factors, one of which is the external factor of global economic condition. To that end, the current macroeconomic condition began to improve, so the government should continue to be alert to the possibility of the return of turmoil and external pressures that may interfere with the domestic economic fundamental,” he said.

It was said the external factors should be watched out as it was not known what sentiment could arise from the global condition. The most important of the rupiah appreciation, he said, the investment would be increasingly open and it was a good situation to make investment more confident again. Besides, it could suppress the value of imports which had so far always been higher and the export performance would strengthen.

The appreciation of rupiah exchange rate against the U.S. dollar was mentioned to give a positive signal for the economic growth. Improving economic growth would take effect in all lines, including banks where it could raise funds of third parties as well as the lending and the LDR could be getting better.

Meanwhile, the Representative of Bank Indonesia for Region III Bali-Nusra would conduct a study on the economic impact of the general election 2014, especially in the Bali region. This event was expected to run smoothly, so that the economic activity could still be maintained and running properly.

“We will make a study related to the impact of the election against the economy. Previously, we have made a study on the fuel price hike because the BI will not provide information without accompanied with a study,” said Chief Representative of Bank Indonesia for Region III Bali-Nusra, Benny Siswato.

According to him, the central bank had not conducted an in-depth study related to the impact of this annual event. However, his party was committed to maintaining the economic stability so there would be no impact on society.

“Specifically, we have not examined the political impact. However, we are committed to maintaining the economic stability,” he said.

In 2014, the economy of Bali and Nusa Tenggara region was expected to reach 6.05 percent higher compared to the growth in 2013. The economic growth was supported by the increased consumption and net export growth.

Meanwhile, the economy of Bali as the region’s economic powerhouse was expected to exceed the forecast of 6.35 percent. This prospect was supported by the promising development of Bali tourism industry as a gateway of foreign tourists to visit tourist destinations in Bali and Nusa Tenggara region and other regions in Indonesia. Two cases of fallen tree

Topple over a stall, one farmer in agony Bali Post

GIANYAR - Heavy rains increasingly made the soil condition in the area of North Gianyar unstable. At Thursday night, two cases of fallen trees occurred again. It happened at Tangkas hamlet, Kendran village and Tangkup hamlet, Pupuan village, Tegallalang, Gianyar. The fallen trees nearly claimed casualties. A farmer at Tangkup hamlet, I Made Egar, 60, was in agony because his hut was toppled over by a fallen tree.

Based on the data obtained on Friday (Mar 14), the farmer I Made Egar was found in a badly injured condition in the hut toppled over by albizia tree. At the time of incident, it was raining and the victim was sheltering in the hut. Without being realized, suddenly the albizia tree uprooted and toppled over the hut where he sheltered. The victim having been unconscious was finally getting assistance from local people who helped evacuated. The victim was taken to the Tegallalang public health center. The victim suffered a broken neck that could potentially lead to paralysis so he was finally referred to Sanglah Hospital.

Meanwhile, at Tangkas hamlet, Kendran village, Tegallalang, a shop owned by Sang Ayu Rai alias Agung Niang Rai, 73, was destroyed along with all the contents as toppled over by banyan tree. The shop owner was confirmed to survive. Gung Niang Rai admitted to be slightly shocked to see the destroyed condition of her stall. It happened around 9:30 p.m. At that night, she told she had closed her shop early because visitors were deserted.

After closing the shop, she then came home. “Before having time to sit down, she heard a sound of fallen tree. If I have not been closed, probably I was buried,” she explained.

Based on information from Chief of Manuaba customary village, Kendran village, I Made Rudeg, 50, the sanctified banyan tree was planned to be trimmed by residents. Previously, the branch on the other side had broken and destroyed a vehicle.

“Before being trimmed, the disaster has occurred again and this time destroyed a shop,” he said.

In the meantime, the evacuation was made by the Gianyar Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) officers on Friday morning. The officers did it carefully so the stall next to it would not get withdrawn by the tree limb. Due to the disaster, the material loss was estimated to reach IDR 100 million. (kmb)

CANBERRA, Australia — As police investigate the two pilots of a Malaysian passenger jet that disappeared more than a week ago, a possibility they must consider is that one of them committed suicide by deliberately crashing the plane.

While such incidents have happened before, the topic remains almost taboo, with investigators and officials reluctant to conclude that a pilot purposely crashed a plane in order to commit suicide even when the evidence appears compelling.

A dozen years ago, U.S. investigators filed a final report into the 1999 crash of EgyptAir Flight 990, which plunged into the Atlantic Ocean near the Massachusetts island of Nantucket, killing all 217 aboard. They concluded that when co-pilot Gameel El-Batouty found himself alone on the flight deck, he switched off the auto-pilot, pointed the plane downward, and calmly repeated the phrase “I rely on God” over and over, 11 times in total.

Yet while the National Transportation Safety Board concluded

that the co-pilot’s actions caused the crash, they didn’t use the word “suicide” in the main findings of their 160-page report, instead saying the reason for his actions “was not determined.” Egyptian officials, meanwhile, rejected the notion of suicide altogether, insisting instead there was some mechanical reason for the crash.

There was also disagreement over the cause of the crash of SilkAir Flight 185, which plunged into a river in 1997 during a flight from Jakarta, Indonesia, to Singapore, killing all 104 passengers and crew. A U.S. investigation found that the Boeing 737 had been deliberately crashed, but an Indonesian investigation was inconclusive.

Mozambique officials have been investigating a crash that killed 33 people in November. They say preliminary investigations indicate that the pilot of the Mozambican Airline plane bound for Angola intentionally brought it down, and they’re continuing to look into his possible motives.

Some Iranian officials have also suggested in the past that specific European companies may have sold faulty equipment to Iran with the knowledge of American intelligence agencies and their own governments, since the sales would have harmed, rather than helped, the country’s nuclear program.

Since then, Iran has also said that it discovered tiny timed explosives planted on centrifuges but disabled them before they could go off. Authorities now claim the Islamic Republic is immune to cyberattacks.

NEW YORK - Weibo Corp., the Chinese microblogging service often compared with Twitter, filed Friday for a US stock offering seeking to raise $500 million.

The move will allow the popular Chinese-language social network to spin off from the Internet giant Sina, according to documents filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

The filing said Weibo had 129.1 million monthly active users in December and 61.4 million average daily active users. The company did not indicate whether Weibo would file its IPO on the Nasdaq or New York Stock Exchange.

The lead underwriters will be Goldman Sachs Asia and Credit Suisse.

“A microcosm of Chinese society, Weibo has attracted a wide range of users, including ordinary people, celebrities and other public figures, as well as organizations such as media outlets, businesses, government agencies and charities,” the SEC filing said.

“Weibo has become a cultural phenomenon in China.

“Weibo allows people to be heard publicly and exposed to the rich ideas, cultures and experiences of the broader world,” it added.

“Media outlets use Weibo as a source of news and a distribution channel for their headline news. Government agencies and officials use Weibo as an official communication channel for disseminating timely information and gauging public opinion to improve public services.”

The filing said Weibo’s initial public offering (IPO) will be part of a “carveout from Sina,” but that Sina would “continue to provide us with certain support services” after it becomes independent.

“We will use approximately $250 million of the net proceeds we receive from this offering to repay loans we owe to SINA,” the document read.

“We intend to use the remainder to invest in technology, infrastructure and product development, to expand sales and marketing efforts, and for working capital and other general corporate purposes.”

ATHENS - Officials from some of the world’s top fishing powers signed a declaration in Greece on Friday to promote sustainable management of fish stocks.

The signatories -- the EU, United States, Japan, Philippines, Colombia and Indonesia -- pledged to support measures to address fishing overcapacity.

These include developing international fishing vessel records, limiting the number of licenses and vessel tonnage and eliminating fisheries subsidies that contribute to overcapacity and overfishing.

“We bear responsibility for the conservation of living marine resources and thus for addressing overcapacity when it undermines conservation and sustainability objectives,” the statement said.

The event was organised in Thessaloniki under Greece’s rotating EU presidency.

According to the European Commission, the EU imports 70 percent of its fish intake.

Overall, the bloc accounts for a fourth of the world’s seafood resources. Some progress has been made. In 2013, 25 stocks were fished sustainably in the North Sea and Atlantic, five times more than in 2009, the European Commission says.

This is expected to increase to 31 stocks in 2015. But environmental group Greenpeace stressed that more action is needed.

“EU countries should start by scrapping the largest and most destructive industrial fishing vessels, initiating a shift towards small-scale low-impact fishing, which is more environmentally sustainable, creates jobs and supports local communities,” the group said in a statement.

The organisation’s oceans policy advisor Sebastian Losada added: “Better management

of fishing capacity is critical and long overdue.

Governments must ensure that excess fishing capacity is removed and not just dispatched to new fishing grounds.”

EU Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Commissioner Maria Damanaki conceded in an online article this week that enforcing compliance by states has been a “struggle”.

“To achieve the right balance between fishing power and natural resources, all global actors need to pull together,” she wrote in a Huffington Post article.

But she noted that scrapping fishing vessels piecemeal was not in itself an answer to the problem.

“The solution must be a well-designed mix of structural and conservation tools, rightsbased management systems, tighter controls and, especially, incentives for diversification,” Damanaki said in the article, jointly written with former World Trade Organisation director-general Pascal Lamy and South African national planning minister Trevor Manuel.

Cathay Pacific has frequently flown to Bali. Along with its subsidiary’s, there would be nine flights from Hong Kong to the resort island in a week, he said.

As a result, more tourists from East Asia, including those of China, were expected to come to this famous Indonesian tourist destination, he said adding that Dragonair was awarded the World’s Best Regional Airline

KUTA - Indonesia’s position in the face of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) raises concerns as it has a lot of homework to do before the AEC is introduced at the end of 2015, an official stated.

“We are concerned about the position of Indonesia, which is still below that of other ASEAN member countries such as Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand,” Ariyanto Sagala, the head of the industrial quality and policy assessment affairs of the Ministry of Industry, stated.

He explained that based on a report by the World Economic Forum (WEF), Indonesia’s competitiveness index was ranked 38 in the 2013-2014 period. Previously it was ranked 50th.

“Indonesia’s rating in the ASE-

AN region is still below Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam and Thailand,” Ariyanto added.

In logistics term, Indonesia’s position is also lower than that of Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam.

“Besides that, we also have problems relating to human resources’ productivity,” the Ministry of Industry official remarked.

Indonesia is the biggest market in the ASEAN region but it fails to adopt the correct step, then it will only become the market for other countries. Indonesia’s population

accounts for 40 to 60 percent of the total ASEAN population of 612 million.

Basically, Indonesia has not yet had a large market share in the ASEAN region, as the values of its intra and extra ASEAN trade were still lesser than those of Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.

In terms of exports and imports in the ASEAN region, Indonesia has trade surpluses only with Myanmar, Cambodia and the Philippines.

Its exports to Myanmar stood at 556.37 million dollars and its imports were worth 73.15 million US dollars.

With Cambodia its exports accounted for 312.41 million dollars and exports 17.84 million dollars.

Indonesia’s exports to the Philippines are worth 3.81 billion,

while its imports stood at 777.38 million.

In other ASEAN countries Indonesia still suffered trade deficits.

Its exports against imports to Thailand stood at 6.06 billion and 10.70 billion respectively, to Singapore 16.69 billion and 25.58 billion and to Laos worth 5.85 million and 7.54 million.

In the meantime, Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa had earlier stated that Indonesia had set up a committee to deal with things in the face of the AEC. “We have established the AEC committee to strengthen our preparations,” the minister explained.

The new committee has been given the task of, among other things, preparing to face the implementation of the AEC, and to identi-

fy opportunities and challenges that might be faced by the government and businessmen.

The preparations included those for trade, investment and the flow of people. “We have reached around 84 percent,” the minister stated, referring to Indonesia’s achievement in accordance with the plans and targets set for the implementation of the AEC. “That’s just the implementation phase. Later, we should prepare to benefit through the opportunities,” he added.

The ASEAN leaders adopted the ASEAN Economic Blueprint at the 13th ASEAN Summit on 20 November 2007, in Singapore to serve as a coherent master plan guiding the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community by 2015.

Jose Salvador Alvarenga embraced his friend Ezequiel Cordoba’s mother and both cried as a horde of journalists recorded the moment.

“I would’ve liked to have welcomed my son like this,” said Roselia Diaz Cueto. “It fills with happiness to be with my friend’s mother,” Alvarenga told her. Alvarenga said he and Cordoba, who died about a month after they first became lost at sea, promised each other that whoever survived would visit the other’s family and tell them what happened.

The 37-year-old fisherman’s boat washed up in the Marshall Islands in February. He returned Friday to Mexico, the country where the journey began in December 2012. Some have expressed disbelief at his tale of survival, which included eating turtles, fish and birds and drifting more than 6,500 miles (10,500 kilometers) into the sea.

After meeting with the young fisherman’s mother, Alvarenga planned to travel to Costa Azul, the place where the pair had set out. Diaz said Ezequiel is the second son she’s lost to the sea. The family lives in the small village of El Fortin, where about 500 people fish for a living and where Cordoba became a fisherman when he was 8-years-old.

She said she doesn’t blame Alvarenga for her son’s death, but added that she wants to hear firsthand about what her son went through. She also said she hopes talking to Alvarenga will help her find peace and added that she wants Alvarenga’s help in getting a death certificate for her son.

Since being elected governor of Jakarta in 2012, Joko Widodo, known as “Jokowi,” has topped polls as the most electable candidate to replace President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who cannot run for re-election because he is already in his second term.

Widodo’s growing popularity is driven by moves aimed at shoring up support among the poor and a clean track record. By naming him Friday as a candidate for the July 9 presidential election, Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle chairwoman Megawati will likely secure a significant number of votes for the party in next month’s legislative polls.

“I’m ready to carry out the mandate,” Widodo told cheering supporters at a low-cost apartment complex in Jakarta.

Indonesia, home to more than 240 million people, is the world’s thirdlargest democracy after India and the United States.

Jokowi active involvement in

the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle’s (PDIP) campaign trail would not disrupt his gubernatorial duties, a PDIP executive board member said.

“Jokowi’s campaign trail will not disrupt his gubernatorial duties because he becomes the PDIP campaigner only on Saturday and Sunday,” PDIP Deputy Secretary General Hasto Kristiyanto said on Sunday.

Joko Widodo, whose popular nickname is Jokowi and has been mandated by PDIP Chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri as her party’s presidential candidate, backed the party’s first campaigns in Jakarta on Sunday.

Along with several top PDIP executive board members, he visited a number of historic places in the capital city to meet the party’s cadres and supporters, such as the National Awakening Museum in Central Jakarta on Sunday.

Based on the party’s agenda, Jokowi would, among others, stage

campaigns at the Youth Oath Building, the Budi Utomo Building, the traditional market near the Pola and Cenderawasih buildings.

Jokowi himself did not talk too much as Effendi did. It was planned that Jokowi would make oration at Cenderawasih Museum in West Jakarta.

Kristiyanto said his party would not assign Jokowi to join the campaign trail on weekday because it did not want to interrupt his gubernatorial duties.

“So, assuming that Jokowi’s involvement in the party’s campaign trail will disrupt his official duties is completely not true,” he said.

Jokowi was officially nominated as the PDIP’s presidential candidate last Friday to compete in the presidential election on July 9.

Referring to recent survey outcomes, political analysts believe that Jokowi’s candidacy will help increase PDIP’s votes in the legislative elections, due to be held on April 9.

JAKARTA - The Jakarta Police will deploy about 18,000 personnel to secure all activities during the 2014 general election processes, the Jakarta police spokesman said.

“The Jakarkta Police will field some 18,000 personnel to secure the legislative elections. They will be stationed at all polling booths,” Jakarta Police Spokesman Senior Commissioner Rikwanto said on Sunday.

Regarding the election campaign activities, Rikwanto said that the number of police officers who would be deployed would be adjusted to the situation and conditions in the field.

Besides securing the stages of elections activities, the police also will arrange the traffic flows to prevent and overcome traffic jams in certain road sections.

Rikwanto said that the Jakarta Police had received information on the plan to hold a public debate on Sunday by Fahira Ifris, a Regional Representative Council (DPD)’s legislative candidate at the Otista Youth Center, East Jakarta with a number of supporters reaching 1,500 people.

The Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) will also hold a campaign with supporters reaching 80,000 at the Bung Karno Sports Stadium.

In North Jakarta, campaign activities would be organized by the National Awakening Party (PKB) with 250 supporters while the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) would hold one at Teluk Pucung Square with supporters reaching 10,000.

Indonesia is organizing a legislative election on April 9, and a presidential race on July 9 this year. A total of 15 political parties in Indonesia have been verified by the General Elections Commission (KPU) so they have the right to participate in the elections.

Three of them are local parties for the Aceh electorate while 12 others are the national parties that will participate in the parliamentary elections in April.

They consist of the National Democratic Party (Nasdem), the National Awakening Party (PKB), the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), the Indonesian Democratic Party Struggle (PDIP), the Golkar Party (Golkar), and the Great Indonesia Movement (Gerindra).

Then the others are the Democratic Party (Demokrat), the National Mandate Party (PAN), the United Development Party (PPP), the People’s Conscience Party (Hanura), the Crescent Star Party (PBB) and the Indonesian Justice and Unity Party (PKPI).

Pekanbaru airport resumes operation Antara

PEKANBARU - The Sultan Syarif Kasim International Airport in Pekanbaru city, Riau Province, has resumed its operation on Sunday after being disrupted by smog disaster for several days, the airport authority said.

“This morning, a Lion Air plane just landed at around 06.45 am. We called on other airlines to operate normally because the haze starts diminishing.” the airport’s duty manager, Ibnu Hasan, said here Sunday.

The pilot visibility was currently 2,500 meters, he said.

Thick haze, caused by continued forest fires in Riau over the past month had disturbed air transportation in the province.

As a result of thickening haze, the airport authority should temporarily stop flights due to low visibility.

Meanwhile Pekanbaru’s Chief of Airlines Operator Committee (AOC) Ahmad Nixon said six airlines were still halting operation due to haze in Pekanbaru city.

“Silk Air tries to fly from Pekanbaru airport today but it then cancels it due to the haze, while Mandala Air says it will assess today’s weather condition before deciding whether to resume its flight service or not,” Ahmad said.

The Firefly airline said it would still halt its operation until further notice while Citilink airline said it stop flying to and from Pekanbaru until March 17.

“Other airlines such as Lion group and Sky Aviation convey that they will not fly from and to Pekanbatu until March 19. While the national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia says it will not serve Pekanbaru route until March 22,” he added.

Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg wins F1 Australian GP Associated Press Writer

MELBOURNE, Australia — Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg comfortably won the Formula One seasonopening Australian Grand Prix on Sunday after pole sitter Lewis Hamilton and world champion Sebastian Vettel retired early with mechanical failures. Vettel’s Red Bull teammate Daniel Ricciardo finished second, becoming the first Australian to finish on the podium in his home GP, while McLaren’s Kevin Magnussen finished third in his debut.

Rosberg started third on the grid and was first to reach turn one, then drove away from the field to eventually win by 24.5 seconds at the Albert Park street circuit. The margin of victory and the authority of the performance showed why Mercedes is considered a strong favorite to finally win its first constructors’ title this season.

INDIAN WELLS, California — Novak Djokovic beat John Isner 7-5, 6-7 (2), 6-1 on Saturday to reach the final of the BNP Paribas Open, where he’ll resume his longtime rivalry with Roger Federer. “It’s always tense. It’s always emotional. It’s always close,” Djokovic said of the looming match up. “I look forward to it.”

Federer had a much easier time in the semifinals, beating Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine 6-3, 6-1 and putting himself in position to win a fifth career title at Indian Wells. Djokovic is a two-time winner here. Federer leads their rivalry 17-15, having beaten Djokovic two weeks ago in the semifinals at Dubai.

Before that, Djokovic had won three straight times over the Swiss star.

Second-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska will play Flavia Pennetta in the women’s final Sunday before the men’s title is decided. Djokovic struggled with the big-serving Isner, who beat him here in the semis two years ago before losing to Federer in the final.

“With that serve, obviously, he can win against anybody on a good day,” Djokovic said. “I thought I returned really well today and allowed myself

to have a bunch of opportunities on his service games.”

Djokovic had a chance to win in two sets, breaking Isner to go up 5-4 and then again at 6-5. But the American broke back at love to level at 6-6, then and then dominated in the tiebreaker.

Isner won four straight points and served his sixth ace to win it 7-2 and force the decisive third set.

“When you get to the tiebreaker with John Isner, whoever you are, you’re not a favorite,” Djokovic said. “I just tried to hang in there, stay mentally tough when I lost the second set, and played a great third.” Djokovic broke Isner for a 3-1 lead in the third. Djokovic survived a break point in the next game and held for a 4-1 lead.

Isner called for the trainer a second time in the match to work on an area above his left knee before he got broken to trail 5-1, missing two straight forehands. Djokovic came up with his own big serve on match point that Isner couldn’t return.

“It prevented me from being able to go after my serve like I wanted to, but that’s not the reason I lost,” Isner said about having tightness in his knee. “I am disappointed, but at the same time, I had a good week here.”

SEATTLE — Ex-Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe scored twice in the first half of his Major League Soccer debut on Saturday, helping new-look Toronto FC hold off the Seattle Sounders 2-1. Defoe’s debut upstaged the return of U.S. midfielder Michael Bradley to MLS in his first game for Toronto. Defoe and Bradley were the centerpieces of a major offseason makeover by Toronto that also included the acquisition of Brazilian goalkeeper Julio Cesar on loan.

All three made their season debut against Seattle after Toronto had a bye in the first week of the season. SEATTLE — Ex-Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe scored twice in the first half of his Major League Soccer debut on Saturday, helping new-look Toronto FC hold off the Seattle Sounders 2-1. Defoe’s debut upstaged the return of U.S. midfielder Michael Bradley to MLS in his first game for Toronto. Defoe and Bradley were the centerpieces of a major offseason makeover by Toronto that also included the acquisition of Brazilian goalkeeper Julio Cesar on loan.

All three made their season debut against Seattle after Toronto had a bye in the first week of the season. Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg wins F1 Australian GP Associated Press Writer

MELBOURNE, Australia — Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg comfortably won the Formula One seasonopening Australian Grand Prix on Sunday after pole sitter Lewis Hamilton and world champion Sebastian Vettel retired early with mechanical failures. Vettel’s Red Bull teammate Daniel Ricciardo finished second, becoming the first Australian to finish on the podium in his home GP, while McLaren’s Kevin Magnussen finished third in his debut.

Rosberg started third on the grid and was first to reach turn one, then drove away from the field to eventually win by 24.5 seconds at the Albert Park street circuit. The margin of victory and the authority of the performance showed why Mercedes is considered a strong favorite to finally win its first constructors’ title this season.

INDIAN WELLS, California — Novak Djokovic beat John Isner 7-5, 6-7 (2), 6-1 on Saturday to reach the final of the BNP Paribas Open, where he’ll resume his longtime rivalry with Roger Federer. “It’s always tense. It’s always emotional. It’s always close,” Djokovic said of the looming match up. “I look forward to it.”

Federer had a much easier time in the semifinals, beating Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine 6-3, 6-1 and putting himself in position to win a fifth career title at Indian Wells. Djokovic is a two-time winner here. Federer leads their rivalry 17-15, having beaten Djokovic two weeks ago in the semifinals at Dubai.

Before that, Djokovic had won three straight times over the Swiss star.

Second-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska will play Flavia Pennetta in the women’s final Sunday before the men’s title is decided. Djokovic struggled with the big-serving Isner, who beat him here in the semis two years ago before losing to Federer in the final.

“With that serve, obviously, he can win against anybody on a good day,” Djokovic said. “I thought I returned really well today and allowed myself

to have a bunch of opportunities on his service games.”

Djokovic had a chance to win in two sets, breaking Isner to go up 5-4 and then again at 6-5. But the American broke back at love to level at 6-6, then and then dominated in the tiebreaker.

Isner won four straight points and served his sixth ace to win it 7-2 and force the decisive third set.

“When you get to the tiebreaker with John Isner, whoever you are, you’re not a favorite,” Djokovic said. “I just tried to hang in there, stay mentally tough when I lost the second set, and played a great third.” Djokovic broke Isner for a 3-1 lead in the third. Djokovic survived a break point in the next game and held for a 4-1 lead.

Isner called for the trainer a second time in the match to work on an area above his left knee before he got broken to trail 5-1, missing two straight forehands. Djokovic came up with his own big serve on match point that Isner couldn’t return.

“It prevented me from being able to go after my serve like I wanted to, but that’s not the reason I lost,” Isner said about having tightness in his knee. “I am disappointed, but at the same time, I had a good week here.”

Jose Salvador Alvarenga embraced his friend Ezequiel Cordoba’s mother and both cried as a horde of journalists recorded the moment.

“I would’ve liked to have welcomed my son like this,” said Roselia Diaz Cueto. “It fills with happiness to be with my friend’s mother,” Alvarenga told her. Alvarenga said he and Cordoba, who died about a month after they first became lost at sea, promised each other that whoever survived would visit the other’s family and tell them what happened.

The 37-year-old fisherman’s boat washed up in the Marshall Islands in February. He returned Friday to Mexico, the country where the journey began in December 2012. Some have expressed disbelief at his tale of survival, which included eating turtles, fish and birds and drifting more than 6,500 miles (10,500 kilometers) into the sea.

After meeting with the young fisherman’s mother, Alvarenga planned to travel to Costa Azul, the place where the pair had set out. Diaz said Ezequiel is the second son she’s lost to the sea. The family lives in the small village of El Fortin, where about 500 people fish for a living and where Cordoba became a fisherman when he was 8-years-old.

She said she doesn’t blame Alvarenga for her son’s death, but added that she wants to hear firsthand about what her son went through. She also said she hopes talking to Alvarenga will help her find peace and added that she wants Alvarenga’s help in getting a death certificate for her son.

JAKARTA — The political party of former Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri nominated the capital’s popular governor as its presidential candidate on Friday, a move aimed at bolstering the party’s prospects in upcoming legislative elections.

SIMFEROPOL, Ukraine — The Crimean region voted on Sunday about whether to demand greater autonomy from Ukraine or split off and seek to join Russia, in a referendum that has been condemned as illegal by the United States and European countries. Since being elected governor of Jakarta in 2012, Joko Widodo, known as “Jokowi,” has topped polls as the most electable candidate to replace President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who cannot run for re-election because he is already in his second term.

Widodo’s growing popularity is driven by moves aimed at shoring up support among the poor and a clean track record. By naming him Friday as a candidate for the July 9 presidential election, Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle chairwoman Megawati will likely secure a significant number of votes for the party in next month’s legislative polls.

“I’m ready to carry out the mandate,” Widodo told cheering supporters at a low-cost apartment complex in Jakarta.

Joko Widodo, whose popular nickname is Jokowi and has been mandated by PDIP Chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri as her party’s presidential candidate, backed the party’s first campaigns in Jakarta on Sunday.

Along with several top PDIP executive board members, he visited a number of historic places in the capital city to meet the party’s cadres and supporters, such as the National Awakening Museum in Central Jakarta on Sunday.

Rikwanto said that the Jakarta Police had received information on the plan to hold a public debate on Sunday by Fahira Ifris, a Regional Representative Council (DPD)’s legislative candidate at the Otista Youth Center, East Jakarta with a number of supporters reaching 1,500 people.

In North Jakarta, campaign activities would be organized by the National Awakening Party (PKB) with 250 supporters while the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) would hold one at Teluk Pucung Square with supporters reaching 10,000.

Indonesia is organizing a legislative election on April 9, and a presidential race on July 9 this year. A total of 15 political parties in Indonesia have been verified by the General Elections Commission (KPU) so they have the right to participate in the elections.

Three of them are local parties for the Aceh electorate while 12 others are the national parties that will participate in the parliamentary elections in April.

They consist of the National Democratic Party (Nasdem), the National Awakening Party (PKB), the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), the Indonesian Democratic Party Struggle (PDIP), the Golkar Party (Golkar), and the Great Indonesia Movement (Gerindra).

Pekanbaru airport resumes operation Antara

PEKANBARU - The Sultan Syarif Kasim International Airport in Pekanbaru city, Riau Province, has resumed its operation on Sunday after being disrupted by smog disaster for several days, the airport authority said.

“This morning, a Lion Air plane just landed at around 06.45 am. We called on other airlines to operate normally because the haze starts diminishing.” the airport’s duty manager, Ibnu Hasan, said here Sunday.

The pilot visibility was currently 2,500 meters, he said.

Thick haze, caused by continued forest fires in Riau over the past month had disturbed air transportation in the province.

As a result of thickening haze, the airport authority should temporarily stop flights due to low visibility.

Meanwhile Pekanbaru’s Chief of Airlines Operator Committee (AOC) Ahmad Nixon said six airlines were still halting operation due to haze in Pekanbaru city.

“Silk Air tries to fly from Pekanbaru airport today but it then cancels it due to the haze, while Mandala Air says it will assess today’s weather condition before deciding whether to resume its flight service or not,” Ahmad said.

The Firefly airline said it would still halt its operation until further notice while Citilink airline said it stop flying to and from Pekanbaru until March 17.

“Other airlines such as Lion group and Sky Aviation convey that they will not fly from and to Pekanbatu until March 19. While the national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia says it will not serve Pekanbaru route until March 22,” he added.

NEW YORK - Weibo Corp., the Chinese microblogging service often compared with Twitter, filed Friday for a US stock offering seeking to raise $500 million.

The move will allow the popular Chinese-language social network to spin off from the Internet giant Sina, according to documents filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

The filing said Weibo had 129.1 million monthly active users in December and 61.4 million average daily active users. The company did not indicate whether Weibo would file its IPO on the Nasdaq or New York Stock Exchange.

The lead underwriters will be Goldman Sachs Asia and Credit Suisse.

“A microcosm of Chinese society, Weibo has attracted a wide range of users, including ordinary people, celebrities and other public figures, as well as organizations such as media outlets, businesses, government agencies and charities,” the SEC filing said.

“Weibo has become a cultural phenomenon in China.

“Weibo allows people to be heard publicly and exposed to the rich ideas, cultures and experiences of the broader world,” it added.

“Media outlets use Weibo as a source of news and a distribution channel for their headline news. Government agencies and officials use Weibo as an official communication channel for disseminating timely information and gauging public opinion to improve public services.”

The filing said Weibo’s initial public offering (IPO) will be part of a “carveout from Sina,” but that Sina would “continue to provide us with certain support services” after it becomes independent.

“We will use approximately $250 million of the net proceeds we receive from this offering to repay loans we owe to SINA,” the document read.

“We intend to use the remainder to invest in technology, infrastructure and product development, to expand sales and marketing efforts, and for working capital and other general corporate purposes.”

ATHENS - Officials from some of the world’s top fishing powers signed a declaration in Greece on Friday to promote sustainable management of fish stocks.

The signatories -- the EU, United States, Japan, Philippines, Colombia and Indonesia -- pledged to support measures to address fishing overcapacity.

These include developing international fishing vessel records, limiting the number of licenses and vessel tonnage and eliminating fisheries subsidies that contribute to overcapacity and overfishing.

“We bear responsibility for the conservation of living marine resources and thus for addressing overcapacity when it undermines conservation and sustainability objectives,” the statement said.

The event was organised in Thessaloniki under Greece’s rotating EU presidency.

According to the European Commission, the EU imports 70 percent of its fish intake.

Overall, the bloc accounts for a fourth of the world’s seafood resources. Some progress has been made. In 2013, 25 stocks were fished sustainably in the North Sea and Atlantic, five times more than in 2009, the European Commission says.

This is expected to increase to 31 stocks in 2015. But environmental group Greenpeace stressed that more action is needed.

“EU countries should start by scrapping the largest and most destructive industrial fishing vessels, initiating a shift towards small-scale low-impact fishing, which is more environmentally sustainable, creates jobs and supports local communities,” the group said in a statement.

The organisation’s oceans policy advisor Sebastian Losada added: “Better management

of fishing capacity is critical and long overdue.

Governments must ensure that excess fishing capacity is removed and not just dispatched to new fishing grounds.”

EU Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Commissioner Maria Damanaki conceded in an online article this week that enforcing compliance by states has been a “struggle”.

“To achieve the right balance between fishing power and natural resources, all global actors need to pull together,” she wrote in a Huffington Post article.

But she noted that scrapping fishing vessels piecemeal was not in itself an answer to the problem.

“The solution must be a well-designed mix of structural and conservation tools, rightsbased management systems, tighter controls and, especially, incentives for diversification,” Damanaki said in the article, jointly written with former World Trade Organisation director-general Pascal Lamy and South African national planning minister Trevor Manuel.

Using Airbus A330-300 aircraft, the Hong Kong-Denpasar flights would be served on every Thursday and Sunday starting from April 27, he said.

Cathay Pacific has frequently flown to Bali. Along with its subsidiary’s, there would be nine flights from Hong Kong to the resort island in a week, he said.

As a result, more tourists from East Asia, including those of China, were expected to come to this famous Indonesian tourist destination, he said adding that Dragonair was awarded the World’s Best Regional Airline

KUTA - Indonesia’s position in the face of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) raises concerns as it has a lot of homework to do before the AEC is introduced at the end of 2015, an official stated.

“We are concerned about the position of Indonesia, which is still below that of other ASEAN member countries such as Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand,” Ariyanto Sagala, the head of the industrial quality and policy assessment affairs of the Ministry of Industry, stated.

He explained that based on a report by the World Economic Forum (WEF), Indonesia’s competitiveness index was ranked 38 in the 2013-2014 period. Previously it was ranked 50th.

“Indonesia’s rating in the ASE-

AN region is still below Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam and Thailand,” Ariyanto added.

In logistics term, Indonesia’s position is also lower than that of Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam.

“Besides that, we also have problems relating to human resources’ productivity,” the Ministry of Industry official remarked.

Indonesia is the biggest market in the ASEAN region but it fails to adopt the correct step, then it will only become the market for other countries. Indonesia’s population

accounts for 40 to 60 percent of the total ASEAN population of 612 million.

Basically, Indonesia has not yet had a large market share in the ASEAN region, as the values of its intra and extra ASEAN trade were still lesser than those of Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.

In terms of exports and imports in the ASEAN region, Indonesia has trade surpluses only with Myanmar, Cambodia and the Philippines.

Its exports to Myanmar stood at 556.37 million dollars and its imports were worth 73.15 million US dollars.

With Cambodia its exports accounted for 312.41 million dollars and exports 17.84 million dollars.

Indonesia’s exports to the Philippines are worth 3.81 billion,

while its imports stood at 777.38 million.

In other ASEAN countries Indonesia still suffered trade deficits.

Its exports against imports to Thailand stood at 6.06 billion and 10.70 billion respectively, to Singapore 16.69 billion and 25.58 billion and to Laos worth 5.85 million and 7.54 million.

In the meantime, Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa had earlier stated that Indonesia had set up a committee to deal with things in the face of the AEC. “We have established the AEC committee to strengthen our preparations,” the minister explained.

The new committee has been given the task of, among other things, preparing to face the implementation of the AEC, and to identi-

fy opportunities and challenges that might be faced by the government and businessmen.

The preparations included those for trade, investment and the flow of people. “We have reached around 84 percent,” the minister stated, referring to Indonesia’s achievement in accordance with the plans and targets set for the implementation of the AEC. “That’s just the implementation phase. Later, we should prepare to benefit through the opportunities,” he added.

The ASEAN leaders adopted the ASEAN Economic Blueprint at the 13th ASEAN Summit on 20 November 2007, in Singapore to serve as a coherent master plan guiding the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community by 2015.

Two cases of fallen tree

Topple over a stall, one farmer in agony Bali Post

GIANYAR - Heavy rains increasingly made the soil condition in the area of North Gianyar unstable. At Thursday night, two cases of fallen trees occurred again. It happened at Tangkas hamlet, Kendran village and Tangkup hamlet, Pupuan village, Tegallalang, Gianyar. The fallen trees nearly claimed casualties. A farmer at Tangkup hamlet, I Made Egar, 60, was in agony because his hut was toppled over by a fallen tree.

Based on the data obtained on Friday (Mar 14), the farmer I Made Egar was found in a badly injured condition in the hut toppled over by albizia tree. At the time of incident, it was raining and the victim was sheltering in the hut. Without being realized, suddenly the albizia tree uprooted and toppled over the hut where he sheltered. The victim having been unconscious was finally getting assistance from local people who helped evacuated. The victim was taken to the Tegallalang public health center. The victim suffered a broken neck that could potentially lead to paralysis so he was finally referred to Sanglah Hospital.

Meanwhile, at Tangkas hamlet, Kendran village, Tegallalang, a shop owned by Sang Ayu Rai alias Agung Niang Rai, 73, was destroyed along with all the contents as toppled over by banyan tree. The shop owner was confirmed to survive. Gung Niang Rai admitted to be slightly shocked to see the destroyed condition of her stall. It happened around 9:30 p.m. At that night, she told she had closed her shop early because visitors were deserted.

After closing the shop, she then came home. “Before having time to sit down, she heard a sound of fallen tree. If I have not been closed, probably I was buried,” she explained.

Based on information from Chief of Manuaba customary village, Kendran village, I Made Rudeg, 50, the sanctified banyan tree was planned to be trimmed by residents. Previously, the branch on the other side had broken and destroyed a vehicle.

“Before being trimmed, the disaster has occurred again and this time destroyed a shop,” he said.

In the meantime, the evacuation was made by the Gianyar Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) officers on Friday morning. The officers did it carefully so the stall next to it would not get withdrawn by the tree limb. Due to the disaster, the material loss was estimated to reach IDR 100 million. (kmb)

CANBERRA, Australia — As police investigate the two pilots of a Malaysian passenger jet that disappeared more than a week ago, a possibility they must consider is that one of them committed suicide by deliberately crashing the plane.

While such incidents have happened before, the topic remains almost taboo, with investigators and officials reluctant to conclude that a pilot purposely crashed a plane in order to commit suicide even when the evidence appears compelling.

A dozen years ago, U.S. investigators filed a final report into the 1999 crash of EgyptAir Flight 990, which plunged into the Atlantic Ocean near the Massachusetts island of Nantucket, killing all 217 aboard. They concluded that when co-pilot Gameel El-Batouty found himself alone on the flight deck, he switched off the auto-pilot, pointed the plane downward, and calmly repeated the phrase “I rely on God” over and over, 11 times in total.

Yet while the National Transportation Safety Board concluded

that the co-pilot’s actions caused the crash, they didn’t use the word “suicide” in the main findings of their 160-page report, instead saying the reason for his actions “was not determined.” Egyptian officials, meanwhile, rejected the notion of suicide altogether, insisting instead there was some mechanical reason for the crash.

There was also disagreement over the cause of the crash of SilkAir Flight 185, which plunged into a river in 1997 during a flight from Jakarta, Indonesia, to Singapore, killing all 104 passengers and crew. A U.S. investigation found that the Boeing 737 had been deliberately crashed, but an Indonesian investigation was inconclusive.

Mozambique officials have been investigating a crash that killed 33 people in November. They say preliminary investigations indicate that the pilot of the Mozambican Airline plane bound for Angola intentionally brought it down, and they’re continuing to look into his possible motives.

Since then, Iran has also said that it discovered tiny timed explosives planted on centrifuges but disabled them before they could go off. Authorities now claim the Islamic Republic is immune to cyberattacks.

CHICAGO — The Chicago River is glowing a bright emerald green Saturday as the city kicks off its St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.

Thousands of cheering onlookers clustered along downtown bridges as members of Chicago Journeymen Plumbers Union Local 130 began dumping containers of dye into the river from motorboats Saturday morning. The annual tradition began at 9:30 a.m. and immediately precedes the St. Patrick’s Day parade.

The union has done the dyeing since 1962. Organizers had feared that large chunks of ice would impede the process, but recent warm temperatures kept the river clear. The hue typically lasts about six to 12 hours.

The parade began at noon. The route winds through downtown and ends at the landmark Buckingham Fountain. A second parade on the city’s South Side takes place Sunday.

LOS ANGELES — An exploratory subway shaft dug just down the street from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art has uncovered a treasure trove of fossils in the land where saber-tooth cats and other early animals once roamed, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday. They include mollusks, asphalt-saturated sand dollars and possibly the mouth of a sea lion dating to 2 million years ago, a time when the Pacific Ocean extended several miles (kilometers) farther inland than it does today.

“Here on the Miracle Mile is where the best record of life from the last great ice age in the world is found,” said paleontologist Kim Scott. The area, dotted today with museums, restaurants, boutiques and apartment buildings, also includes the world-famous La Brea Tar Pits.

It was there that mammoths and saber-toothed cats got stuck in the pits’ oozing muck, which preserved

their skeletons for millennia.

The shaft, dug ahead of work scheduled next year to extend a subway line across LA’s west side, is now revealing far more material, including geoducks, clams, snails, mussels and even a 10-foot (3-meter) limb from a pine tree of the type normally now found in central California’s woodlands.

The medical team included vets and two doctors who usually work on humans: a neonatal specialist and an anesthesiologist. Neonatologist Dawn Reeves says the patient was different from human babies because,

among other things, she can grab with both her hands and her feet.

The gorilla will be monitored around the clock as she recovers.

The mother gorilla, named Imani, had never given birth. The zoo says an emergency C-section was performed because she was in distress after going into labor.

In Badung, the hostels can be found in tourist areas, particularly in Kuta. So far, their amount is still some few. Due to lacking of facilities, it is not surprising if the cost of staying in a hostel is not expensive. The cost to stay is approximately IDR 120,000 per bed per night.

When asked for his confirmation, the Head of Badung Government Tourism Office, Cokorda Raka Darmawan, admitted that Badung had never issued a permit of hostel. According to him, the hostel had not been arranged in a special regulation. So far, the types of accommodation whose permit had been regulated were

hotel, condotel, cottage, villa and rental homes. “We have no regulations about hostel. The name in the licensing has been clear. We do not issue any permit for hostel category,” he said.

The Dean of the Faculty of Economics, Mahasaraswati University, Wayan Sujana, said that in recent weeks, the exchange rate of rupiah against the U.S. dollar strengthened in the range of IDR 11,000. The appreciation of rupiah exchange rate could provide benefits for the economy because there were several potentials that could be maximized. The appreciation of rupiah would likely happen again this year.

“The appreciation of rupiah exchange rate is influenced by several factors, one of which is the external factor of global economic condition. To that end, the current macroeconomic condition began to improve, so the government should continue to be alert to the possibility of the return of turmoil and external pressures that may interfere with the domestic economic fundamental,” he said.

It was said the external factors should be watched out as it was not known what sentiment could arise from the global condition. The most important of the rupiah appreciation, he said, the investment would be increasingly open and it was a good situation to make investment more confident again. Besides, it could suppress the value of imports which had so far always been higher and the export performance would strengthen.

The appreciation of rupiah exchange rate against the U.S. dollar was mentioned to give a positive signal for the economic growth. Improving economic growth would take effect in all lines, including banks where it could raise funds of third parties as well as the lending and the LDR could be getting better.

Meanwhile, the Representative of Bank Indonesia for Region III Bali-Nusra would conduct a study on the economic impact of the general election 2014, especially in the Bali region. This event was expected to run smoothly, so that the economic activity could still be maintained and running properly.

“We will make a study related to the impact of the election against the economy. Previously, we have made a study on the fuel price hike because the BI will not provide information without accompanied with a study,” said Chief Representative of Bank Indonesia for Region III Bali-Nusra, Benny Siswato.

According to him, the central bank had not conducted an in-depth study related to the impact of this annual event. However, his party was committed to maintaining the economic stability so there would be no impact on society.

“Specifically, we have not examined the political impact. However, we are committed to maintaining the economic stability,” he said.

In 2014, the economy of Bali and Nusa Tenggara region was expected to reach 6.05 percent higher compared to the growth in 2013. The economic growth was supported by the increased consumption and net export growth.

Meanwhile, the economy of Bali as the region’s economic powerhouse was expected to exceed the forecast of 6.35 percent. This prospect was supported by the promising development of Bali tourism industry as a gateway of foreign tourists to visit tourist destinations in Bali and Nusa Tenggara region and other regions in Indonesia. SINGARAJA - Commitment of the Buleleng government to campaigning the plastic waste-free 2015 was followed by real action namely cleanup activities in the watershed situated around the former Buleleng Harbor, Friday (Mar 14).

Together with Chinese-descent villagers, Kampung Bugis villagers and surrounding communities happening to trade at location took cleanup action in mutual assistance from six o’clock in the morning. “This activity has become one of our participations in supporting the Buleleng government to realize the waste-free 2015.

DENPASAR - Incident on the loss of Malaysia Airlines with flight number MH370 was horrendous. In Bali, there has been an incident of aircraft crash that may have been forgotten by the people of Bali. However, the monument used to immortalize the 107 victim’s name of the PanAm in 1972 still looks rigid and is even taken advantage for a sanctum by Hindu people in Bali.

The monument was established to commemorate the victims of the PanAm airplane crash in 1972 in Gerokgak Singaraja, where all the 107 passengers and crews died. The passengers consisted of 16 citizens of Australia, Canada (3), China (2), France (18), Germany (5), Indian (1), Indonesia (2), Japan (29), the Philippine (3), Sweden (1) and the USA (27).

The PanAm air plane crash incident posed the most-claimed victim accident, ever in Bali. All the victims were buried at Padanggalak area. This monument designed in Balinese architecture was currently still located in the Ayung River Walk Recreation Park. However, so far the monument was still sturdy adjacent to the Campuhan Temple and Padang Galak Beach.

Even, it has become the sanctum of the Hindus in Bali.

Made Arjaya worshipped to the monument on Saturday afternoon (Mar 15) after a purificatory rite or melukat at Campuhan Temple. He said the presentation of canangsari oblation was intended to give peace to the 107 died passengers. “It is the only offering so those who had passed away could get a peaceful afterlife,” said the man from Tabanan.

This elderly man admitted to still remember the plane crash in 1972 in Gerokgak Singaraja because at the time he was still working at the Ngurah Rai Airport. He complained about the current young people that were less familiar with the historic place. “Many people do no longer remember this historic place, but I still do,” he said. (nik)

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Kevin Spacey responds to Toronto mayor attack Associated Press Writer

TORONTO — Kevin Spacey on Saturday tweeted a Photoshopped image of himself between Toronto mayor Rob Ford and his brother in response to the siblings’ criticism that he won’t take photos with them. Rob and Doug Ford complained earlier this week that they were told they could not have their picture taken with the actor when Spacey and Rob Ford appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” on Mar 2.

The embattled mayor said he wouldn’t know Spacey “if I ran over him.” Ford’s brother called the actor “an arrogant SOB.” The pair made the comments on their show on YouTube named after the mayor’s supporters.

Along with the photo he tweeted, Spacey said, “When did Mayor Ford start doing what people tell him to do? All you had to do was ask, guys. AUSTIN, Texas — Future had one last spot to fill on his upcoming album and he wanted Kanye West to guest. He sent over a few tracks and what happened next was completely unexpected.

“He picked this ‘I Won’ track,” the Atlanta producer-rapper said Saturday during a two-day stop at South By Southwest. “He did the verse in one day and sent it back. That’s rare when you get a Kanye verse back in one day, so you know it’s one of them records when he does the verse and sends it back in 24 hours. That’s the icing on the cake with the album.”

Future began to debut tracks from “Honest,” out April 22, at the annual music conference and festival on Friday and said he was excited for the wider world to hear what he feels is a very personal album. “Honest” also includes guest appearances from stars like Pharrell, Drake, Andre 3000 and Wiz Khalifa.

West’s appearance on “I Won” is one of the more personal moments, encapsulating how deeply in love each is with the women in their lives. West is engaged to Kim Kardashian and Future will marry Ciara later this year. The song compares their relationships with the feeling of winning a trophy.

The woman body was found in a state of decay, in which hands, feet, and head were off from body. This corpse suspected to be a master diver, Takashi Soko, who had been lost during a diving activity at Jungut Batu, Nusa Penida, Klungkung Regency last month.

family after Malang’s police suspected that the body was Takashi Soko who’s been missing for a month.

“The body was allegedly the diver because it still wearing

black diving suit complete with oxygen tank in her back,” he said.

Wirajaya, who received information from the local police, explained that the corpse was first

discovered by fishermen on a reef at Watu Nyonya on Friday. Police was contacted by fishermen and searched the area. But high current around the site made the body swept away.

The next day, fishermen from Sempu Island, which is located around 400 meters from previous location, claimed to see similar corpse. After being informed by fishermen, police went to evacuate the body. Consulate General of Japan in Surabaya also had been

contacted by police to identify the body. “The family said they will check directly to Malang,” he said.

Previously, seven Japanese tourists were missing on Friday (14/2) after diving in Jungut Batu, Nusa Penida, Klungkung Regency.

Five of the victims were found alive after local residents, police, army, and search team look for them for four days. One of them was found dead and one still missing. (kmb31)
