LOS ANGELES - Game Of Thrones fans, this is it - the countdown to the beginning of the end. HBO has announced the date for the premiere of the first episode of the last ever series, after months of teasing what is to come.

In a new trailer, the network confirmed the long-awaited eighth and final series will air on 15 April at 2am and 9pm in the UK. The hit adaptation of the fantasy novels of George RR Martin returns to screens after a near two-year wait, bringing the story to an end after having fans glued since its start in 2011.

Game Of Thrones has made stars of many of its cast members, including Kit Harington, Emilia Clarke, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams and Lena Headey, who will all reprise their roles for the last outing.

The new trailer for the drama shows Harington, Turner and Williams walking down a dark corridor.

Harington’s character Jon Snow is seemingly coming to terms with his true parentage, as a member of the Stark family, alongside Turner and Williams’ characters Sansa and Arya Stark.

With six episodes planned, it looks like Game Of Thrones fans will be saying goodbye to Westeros in May. But while this may be the final showdown for the main players, fans can look forward to a prequel, with details revealed last week. The as yet unnamed series takes place thousands of years before the events in Game Of Thrones, with HBO saying it “chronicles the world’s descent from the Age Of Heroes into its darkest hour”. (net)

Egg poaches Instagram record from Kylie Jenner with most-liked photo

CALIFORNIA - An egg has become the most-liked Instagram post of all-time, poaching the record from reality star Kylie Jenner.

More than 25 million people have given their approval to the random photo, beating the more than 18 million likes received by a picture Jenner shared to announce the birth her daughter Stormi last year.

The egg photo was posted on 4 January and is the sole upload on the Instagram account world_record_egg, which is now asking for a blue tick - a symbol of verification for public figures and organisations.

Alongside the photo was a caption encouraging the “#EggGang” to “set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram”.

Jenner scrambled to respond and soon posted a video of herself trying to fry an egg on a hot pavement, with the brutal caption: “Take that little egg.”

Fans of the make-up mogul have since tried to help her reclaim her throne, but the egg reigns supreme for now.

The owner of the account has not been established, but an Instagram story - which allows users to post images and video in the form of a consistent slide-

show - was uploaded on Sunday night suggesting the creators are British.

It had two posts - one that showed a clip from the 1996 Three Lions (Football’s Coming Home) music video with an egg super-imposed over a football as it was booted into the back of the net.

The second post was a message from the account holders thanking everyone for their support, which said: “It doesn’t end here though, we’re just getting started.”

The profile also follows Lad Bible and The Archbishop Of Banterbury, which are both popular UK-based satire accounts. (net)

At least one suicide bomber blew himself up and gunmen engaged security forces in numerous shootouts during the assault on the DusitD2 compound, which includes a 101-room hotel, spa, restaurant and office buildings.

The attack was claimed by the Al-Qaeda-linked Somali group Al-Shabaab, which has repeatedly targeted Kenya since it sent its army into Somalia in October 2011 to fight the jihadist group.

Kenyans of a 2013 Shabaab attack on the Westgate mall left 67 dead in a siege that stretched out over four days and led to sharp criticism of the security response.

In a televised address, Kenyatta said some 700 civilians had been evacuated throughout the attack at DusitD2, with the swift and effective work from security forces drawing widespread praise in local media.

“I can confirm that... the security operation at Dusit complex is over and all the terrorists eliminated,” Kenyatta said in a televised address

to the nation.

“As of this moment, we have confirmation that 14 innocent lives were lost to the... terrorists, with others injured.” Police sources and a mortuary official had previously reported 15 dead.

It was not immediately clear how many attackers there were in total. CCTV footage broadcast on local media showed four black-clad, heavily armed men entering the complex on Tuesday afternoon.

At least one of them blew himself up at the start of the attack. A

police source said two attackers had been shot dead Wednesday morning after a prolonged shootout.

“The two have red bandanas tied around their forehead and bullets strapped around their chest with several magazines each,” the senior police officer said. “Each had an AK47 which has been secured.”

- Briton, American among dead The attack began at about 3pm (1200GMT) on Tuesday afternoon, with a loud blast followed by gunfire and rapid calls for help spreading on Twitter.

Kenyan police chief Joseph Boinnet said the attack began with an explosion targeting three cars in

the parking lot and a suicide bombing in the foyer of the Dusit hotel.

Among the dead was an American citizen, a State Department official said. A mortuary official said there were also 11 Kenyan victims, a British victim, one with no papers as well as an unidentified torso of a male adult.

Poverty line increases, number of poor population declines

This was revealed in the release of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) delivered by its head Adi Nugroho accompanied by Division Head of Social Statistics of BPS Bali, Dedi Cahyono, on Tuesday (Jan. 15). Based on the calculation in the past three periods, the number of poor people declined. However, the percentage of poor people in rural areas is still higher than in urban areas. In the urban areas, the percentage of poor people reaches 3.36 percent while in rural areas 5.08 percent, so the disparity is quite high.

Several factors cause poverty, especially in terms of inflation in urban areas. However, in rural areas there was deflation in September 2018. Inflation has been in line with economic growth. Economic growth in the third quarter was greater than the previous quarter, namely from 5.68 percent to 6.24 percent. If seen from the absorption of labor in the agricultural sector during the period of August 2018, there were more than in February 2018. Meanwhile, employment absorption in the construction sector increased in countryside, namely 3.14 percent and in urban areas experienced a decline of 7.61 percent. The percentage of poor people in Bali is also influenced by religious ceremonies. In September 2018, there were several Hindu religious activities. It was alleged to have caused an increase in the Poverty Line in the non-food group.

Measuring prosperity is carried out by expenditure approach because if it is measured by people’s income, it is more difficult to obtain than expenditure. The World Bank guides many countries including Indonesia to measure poverty with a degree of consumption.

Poverty line in March to September 2018 rose 1.53 percent from IDR 382,598 per capita per month to IDR 388,451 per capita per month in September 2018. Composition of the causes of poverty line is food at 68.02 percent in urban areas and food poverty line in rural area reached 70.89 percent. “Although the rate of (consumption level) poverty line has increased, the number of poor people has declined,” he said. This indicates that purchasing power of Balinese people is getting higher because of the average expenditure in September 2018 amounted to IDR 388,451, rising from IDR 382,598.

The commodities affecting the poverty line are rice, clove cigarettes, chicken meat, chicken eggs, wet cakes, shallots, tofu, tempeh, bread, ground coffee and instant coffee. “Clove cigarette with filter are still very influential in the formation of poverty line in Bali, where in urban areas occupies number two after rice and in countryside after rice and wet cakes,” he said.

The non-food factor influencing poverty is housing.

Rice and clove cigarettes are included in the ten commodities having the most influence on poverty line.

“Our society consumes more than 10 food groups. The most influencing poverty line is consumption volume and price. If the volume goes up along with falling prices, maybe it has no effect in that month. However, if the volume goes up accompanied by rising prices, it will have a stronger effect,” he explained.

In addition to the amount of poverty, BPS also measured expenditure inequality or the gini ratio. Gini ratio in September 2018 reached 0.364 while the number of inequality is in the range of 0 - 1. The closer it is to 1, the area will be more imbalanced. Population group is divided into three, namely the group 40 percent (low-expenditure), 40 percent (middle-expenditure), and 20 percent (high-expenditure).

Low inequality means being close to be even and high inequality means getting closer to imbalanced.

“Of the 40 percent of the lowest-spending population, in September 2018 it consumed 17.97 percent of the total consumption in the region, so the imbalance is low. If the percentage ranges 17 percent to 12 percent, it belongs to moderate inequality and under 12 percent means the inequality is high, but the low one is almost close to be even,” he closed. DENPASAR - The number of poor people in Bali dropped 3,420 people to 168,340 people, downed 3.91 percent in September 2018. The decline in the number of poor people in Bali continued to occur from March 2017, reaching 4.25 percent of the total population of Bali to 4.14 percent in September 2017; 4.01 percent in March 2018; and 3.91 percent in September 2018. This number placed Bali in the second lowest number of poverty in Indonesia after the Greater Jakarta.

Dozens of Japanese citizens undergo mediksa

MANGUPURA - Mediksa is a sacred ceremony for Hindus. It is the last ritual conducted prior to becoming a sulinggih or Brahmin priest and can only be possible for people having passed the stage of being bhawati. More interestingly, the sacred ritual was also carried out by 13 Japanese citizens at Griya Agung Bangkasa, Bongkasa, Abiansemal, on Monday night (Jan. 14).

They are Ida Pandita Mpu Minako Wira Raga Manuaba, Ida Pandita Mpu Naoko Siwa Paraga Manuaba, Ida Pandita Mpu Akiko Kusuma Daksa Manuaba, Ida Pandita Mpu Junichi Wiswa Mitra Manuaba, Ida Pandita Mpu Kumi Yawakerta Parama Manuaba, and Ida Pandita Mpu Yoshinori Kamya Yoga Manuaba. Son of the late Ida Sinuhun Siwa Putra Prama Manuaba, I Gede Sugata Yadnya Manuaba, said that dozens of Japanese citizens had passed through various processions. Initially, they were adopted as followers of Hinduism through the Sudhi Widani process several years ago. After that, they became bhawati and was initiated

into sulinggih or Brahmin priests.

“They have gone through a number of processes so that they can be initiated and they are aware of themselves being similar to the diksa initiation in general, including the seda raga or physical death procession denoting the stages of the diksa,” he said.

One of the Brahmin priests involved in the initiation rite, Ida Pandita Mpu Daksa Yaksa Acharya Manuaba, explained the dwijati (twice-born) procession was very sacred. Dwijati is the second birth for a human. The first birth is from the mother’s womb or commonly known as biological birth, while the second birth is from knowledge set down by the nabe or spiritual teacher better known as the ideological birth.

He mentioned the diksa procession passed through the process called Dwija. “So, to become a Brahman priest, the prospective is made to experience physical death.

After that, they are revived by spiritual teachers and this procession is called dwija. There is also an interpretation of dwijati, namely being born from a mother and from the Vedas, through the knowledge of spiritual teachers,” he explained.

The process of reviving, he affirmed, is not trivial thing. He said it requires a spiritual teacher who has good karmic savings. On that account, the energy of Krishna, in the Mahabharata epic when reviving the fetus born into Parikesit, was drained. He became powerless as his energy runs out. “So, this requires quite a lot good karmic savings to do the initiation,” he said. (kmb27)

The world’s fifth-richest country has a hunger problem

The epidemic of drug overdose deaths is worsening at a startling rate among middle-aged women.

Middle-aged women dying at alarming rate from overdoses, CDC finds

THE epidemic of drug overdose deaths is worsening at a startling rate among middle-aged women, federal health experts reported Thursday.

Drug overdose deaths have soared among women over 30 starting in 1999 — with the biggest increase among women aged 45 to 64, the team at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found. Deaths from drug overdoses increased by 260 percent among women aged 30 to 64 between 1999 and 2017.

And the rate of drug overdose deaths from opioids increased by an enormous 492 percent among women aged 30 to 64.

While men are far more likely than women to die of drug overdoses, the pattern shows that the dangers of painkiller overuse across the U.S. population.

The U.S. is battling an everworsening epidemic of deaths from opioid drugs. Last year, the government reported more than 70,000 Americans died from drug overdoses, a 10 percent increase in just one year. By far the biggest cause was opioid drugs, especially synthetic opioids such as fentanyl.

Statistics show that most of those who die from overdoses first used opioids with a legitimate pre-

scription from a doctor. The CDC has been advising doctors to think twice before prescribing an opioid and advises patients to question their doctors before accepting a prescription.

The CDC’s Karin Mack and colleagues analyzed death certificates from all 50 states, looking at suicides, homicides, accidental and unknown causes of death. They took note of which drugs were in a person’s system at the time of death, including antidepressants, opioids, anxiety drugs, heroin and cocaine.

Many of those who died had more than one drug in their system at the time. “Deaths might have involved more than one substance,” Mack’s team wrote.

“Increases in deaths involving certain drugs might be the result of increases in certain drug combinations.” For instance, the CDC and other groups have been warning about the special danger of taking opioids and anxiety drugs such as Xanax or Valium at the same time.

Both slow breathing and, taken together, can make people stop

breathing.

But what stuck out was the increase in deaths among women 30 and older, and especially among women aged 45 and older.

“Prescription opioid–related deaths increased between 1999 and 2017 among women aged 30–64 years, with the largest increases among those aged 55–64 years,” Mack’s team wrote in their report, published in the CDC’s weekly report on death and disease.

“Prescription opioids clearly were overutilized for more than a decade,” said Dr. Michael Lynch, medical director of the Pittsburgh Poison Center at the University of Pittsburgh Medical center, who was not involved in the CDC study.

“We’ve seen overall prescribing decline since 2010 to 2012, but I think it’s informative to see that among women ages 30 to 64, prescription opioid overdose deaths still represent such a large number,” Lynch said.

Lynch also suspects suicide might be a bigger factor than the coding on death records can indicate. (net)

LONDON — Britain’s government needs a minister to focus on hunger, lawmakers recommended Thursday.

A report by a cross-party committee found that almost one-infive children under the age of 15 are growing up in a home that has “limited access to food ... due to lack of money or other resources.”

The U.K.’s levels of hunger are among the highest in Europe, the 56-page report added.

Britain is the world’s fifthrichest country.

The lawmakers — which include members of the ruling Conservatives and opposition parties — said the government had allowed hunger to “fall between the cracks.”

“Instead of seeing hunger as an issue abroad, the government’s New Year resolution should be one of taking urgent action at home to tackle hunger and malnutrition,” said Mary Creagh, an opposition lawmaker who chairs the Environmental Audit Committee.

A combination of high living costs, stagnating wages and the rollout of a new welfare benefits system was causing people to live with hunger, she added.

The committee’s report also said the issue is leading to both malnutrition and obesity as people are forced to rely on cheap, calorierich foods.

The recommendation follows a damning report on the rising levels

of poverty in Britain published last year by the United Nations. It found that almost one-in-three children in the U.K. are growing up in poverty.

It also comes as Britain prepares to leave the European Union on March 29, which the Bank of England has said could shrink the economy by as much as 8 percent in about a year.

Food bank use in the U.K. has already increased fourfold since 2012. There are now around 2,000 food banks across the country, compared to just 29 at the height of the financial crisis.

There is also concern among analysts that the country could face food shortages within weeks if Britain leaves the 28-country bloc without a trade deal.

Brexit means the U.K. will also lose billions in E.U. funding, which has greatly benefited the country’s most deprived areas.

The committee’s report recommends that a “minister for hunger” is appointed to analyze the scale, causes and impacts of households living with limited access to food — including malnutrition and obesity.

It also highlights that there is no national government measure for hunger, but think tanks and charities estimate that somewhere in the region of two to three million people are undernourished.

NEGARA — Waste management in the Arum neighborhood, Gilimanuk village, is not yet optimal. So far, it just processes organic waste into compost. Meanwhile, other waste such as plastic, metal and others are still sent to Peh Landfill. This was found by the Chairman of the Jembrana House of Representatives, I Ketut Sugiasa, when visiting the processing site in the West End region of Jembrana on Monday (Jan. 14).

When Sugiasa came to the location of waste processing into compost managed by the Wana Asri Composting group last Monday, the condition was quiet. There was no activity in the building and there was still a lot of garbage.

Seeing these conditions, Sugiasa questioned to the village official accompanying him.

According to village official, there are activities in waste management every day. So that it can generate income for the community group. Sugiasa gave an example of waste management in Malang, East Java. Every day there is work to process waste starting from sorting, to managing so that it produces.

Moreover, this work is made into a main job because the results are quite promising. “After the garbage comes, it must be sorted and processed,” explained Sugiasa.

Sorted organic waste can be used as compost, while plastic waste can be further processed into economic value goods.

“All garbage can be processed and make money. So, the waste thrown to the landfill is only garbage that cannot really be processed,” he explained. According to Sugiasa, the condition of the

building should also be clean and odorless.

He suggested the waste processing at Gilimanuk must be able to produce, so that the group will receive training and if necessary a comparative study should be conducted to the proven waste processing location. Likewise, he hoped the equipment or machinery should be maintained and prevent from damages so as to function accordingly. For example, the leaf chopping machines should not be mixed with twigs. Thus, the equipment can last longer.

He considered that Gilimanuk region can be one of the examples, especially Gilimanuk, as a tourist area. Managing waste production is important. Without this, it will potentially become a problem in the future.

Meanwhile, headman of Gilimanuk, I Gede Wariana Perbawa, accompanied by the Wana Asri group leader, Ismail, revealed the composting group had only started processing waste. Admittedly the machines and equipment posing the aids from one of the companies at Gilimanuk are damaged.

This group has 16 members of Gilimanuk resident. They only work in processing garbage in the afternoon from 05:00. And this activity is still carried out as parttime work.

Currently, the processing is just limited to composting and the production has not been maximized.

According to him, the group stays to need a lot of equipment such as machines, carts and chainsaws.

CULTIVATION of gaga (non-irrigated field) rice variety has not been carried out by farmers at Pedawa village, Banjar, for decades. Having been abandoned for years, farmers at this village evoked rice cultivation in their area. The rise of growing rice on dry land began with simultaneous planting of gaga rice seeds four weeks ago. After commencing the planting, last week farmers implemented the tradition of the Namunang Pulpul.

This tradition is a legacy of the ancestors of the Pedawa village.

From the references and narratives of the local village leaders, Namunang Pulpul comes from two words namely namunang which means ‘collecting’ and pulpul means ‘tools for planting rice.’ Namunang Pulpul means a ceremony dedicated for the farming tools used when first planting gaga rice.

A local farmer, Wayan Dasar, accompanied by a senior resident, Nyoman Kalam, said that when the tradition was held, farmers make a shrine to worship Goddess Sri as one of the places to hold the ritual procession. Meanwhile, the Pulpul is collected into one, tied and presented with offerings. The offerings are presented on certain days or auspicious days until the farmers at this village harvest their gaga.

“This is the first ritual on the gaga rice field. After this, the offerings will continue to be presented on the following good days until the gaga rice is harvested,” he said.

Wayan Dasar has a land area of 700 square meters of gaga rice.

Such area is planted with 5 kg of rice seeds. Meanwhile, the rest

are planted with other productive plants such as corn, cassava, winged beans, ginger and aromatic ginger. The various variety of plant are termed as Bijaratus. Citizens can only get the results of bijaratus from the Pedawa village. This condition makes Pedawa unique to the tradition and cultivation of gaga rice. “All of this is called bijaratus used for the needs of the Pedawa customary ceremony. Harvest yield of gaga rice is needed for traditional ceremonies,” he said.

The unanimous determination of the citizens to restore their gaga rice cultivation received the attention from the Regent of Buleleng, Putu Agus Suradnyana (PAS). The regent took time to see directly the gaga rice cultivation at Pedawa village. He said that willingness of citizens to cultivate gaga rice is in line with the policies of the regional government focused on the agricultural sector. This happens because the agricultural sector is the focus of development to maintain food security, strengthen agriculture and improve the economy of the community and support the tourism development in Bali.

To support the efforts of Pedawa villagers, the regent suggested that it is necessary to develop an awigawig or customary bylaw program regarding the agriculture. “It is possible for the residents to leave a land area of 500 or 1,000 square meters for planting gaga rice in addition to other economical crops.

The rest of the land for planting the gaga rice is to preserve the existing ecosystem,” he said.

The regent added that local wisdom must continue to be preserved and developed for the progress of the region. Other than having beautiful nature, Pedawa also has the potential of excellent customs and culture. This condition can be combined and developed for local villages both in agriculture and tourism based on custom and culture. So, it just needs to develop the advantages making people or tourists more interested in coming to Pedawa village. “The nature is good, the scenery is good and cool.

Later on when it has developed, it will be improved in terms of infrastructure so that tourists are more comfortable when coming here,” he said. (mud)

To legalize liquor, alcohol content reduced

Guests escape harm as avalanche hits Austrian hotel

DENPASAR - The efforts to legalize the local liquor industry are now in the process of reviewing by Perusda Bali and Bali provincial government expert group. This effort is also part of the wishes of the Governor of Bali, Wayan Koster. In order to be legal, the alcohol content in local liquor products will be reduced.

“The governor wishes it not to be too alcoholic. It will be good but the alcohol content is still within tolerance for the circulation,” said the Head of the Bali Trade and Industry Agency, I Putu Astawa, when confirmed on Monday (Jan. 14).

Astawa added that the alcohol content is still being studied by Perusda and the expert group considering the circulation of alcoholic beverages remains to be classified into negative investment. If the alcohol content can be less than 5 percent, it can be circulated.

“Our main target is tourism because Bali is a tourist destination.

On the one hand, there are many alcoholic products from outside the region, such as whiskey having high alcohol. Meanwhile, we have arrack, why can it not be?” he explained.

A member of Commission I of the Bali House of Representatives, I Nyoman Adnyana, said that alcoholic tax was once managed by a private company. However, it is no longer active because the third party got more profits. Tax of the alcohol should be better for the state so as to become more ideal.

Around 60 guests were evacuated from an Austrian hotel and holiday apartment house early Tuesday after the buildings were engulfed by an avalanche, rescue services said.

“It was lucky the avalanche didn’t occur four hours earlier when all of the guests were in the dining room,” said Heribert Eisl, of the mountain rescue team in Ramsau am Dachstein, a village in the central Styria region where the accident happened at 1:00 am (0000 GMT).

The dining room was filled with snow up to one metre (three feet) below the ceiling, he told a news conference. The avalanche shattered the hotel’s windows and overturned vehicles in the car park, but no-one was injured, Eisl said. “We hadn’t expected the avalanche to wreak such damage,” he continued.

A number of areas in the Austrian Alps have been on high avalanche alert for the past 10 days as a result of heavy snowfall across the west and centre of the country since early January.

In some regions, more than three metres of snow has fallen.

“The reason we did this is because of the shutdown,” he added.

“We want to make sure that everything is right, so we sent out, we got this.”

China to cut taxes, keep policy flexible to counter slowdown

BEIJING - China plans to slash taxes, step up spending and provide ample financing to private and small enterprises to help counter the country’s worst slowdown since the global financial crisis and the impact of a bruising trade war with the U.S. hobble efforts to shore up growth.

In July-September, China’s economy expanded at a post-crisis slow annual pace of 6.5 percent despite government efforts to stem the downturn by ordering banks to lend more and by boosting spending on public works construction.

The government reported on Monday that China’s exports to the U.S. slipped in December as the delayed impact of President Donald Trump’s tariff hikes on Chinese products began to pinch demand. China’s trade surplus with the U.S. surged to a record $323.3 billion in 2018. World markets tumbled in response, but recovered on Tuesday after the news conference in Beijing, with Hong Kong’s Hang Seng jumping 1.8 percent while the Shanghai Composite index climbed 1.2 percent.

Xu Hongcai, an assistant minister of finance, said the scale of tax reductions for the year would be about 1.3 trillion yuan ($190 billion).

“The focus is on enhancement and efficiency,” Xu said.

China’s communist leaders have been trying to guide the economy toward a more sustainable mode of growth in recent years by reducing reliance on massive investments in

infrastructure and on export manufacturing and expanding the services sector and private consumption.

It’s a balancing act that requires just enough spending and access to credit to support businesses without setting off inflation and driving asset prices perilously higher.

Zhu said the central bank would keep monetary policy sound, “forward-looking, flexible and pertinent.”

It’s unclear if that will suffice to keep manufacturing on an even keel as Beijing and Washington work to resolve their trade disputes.

Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed on Dec. 1 to postpone additional tariff hikes by 90 days while they negotiated. New Tourism Destination Offered

Armed with panoramic view of paddy fields, the Sukawati village government is now opening farming pathway at Subak Landep area of Sukawati village as a new tourist attraction.

The jogging track area in the form of 1.5 kilometer of ring road was opened to the public on Sunday (Dec. 2). To support the opening of the new tourist attraction, the village also prepares a number of supporting facilities such as a selfie spot.

Headman of Sukawati, Dewa Gede Dwi Putra, said the initial goal of the jogging track was to improve farming pathway in the Sukawati area because the previous conditions were damaged, narrow and muddy during rainy season. After being surveyed, it turned out that the road has the potential to be developed into sporting track as well as a new tourist attraction. “We see this as a potential for new tourist object.

Moreover, Sukawati village is currently moving into a tourism village,” he said.

Dwi Putra added the farming pathway has been equipped with five selfie spots, three gazebos, and five sets of seats. All of them are financed through village funds worth more than IDR 443 million.

This ring road has been operating since four months ago. “The

location remains beautiful, so it is very feasible as a family’s healthy choice for relaxing exercise with charming natural recreational nuances,” he explained.

Dwi Putra said the access from the main road to the outermost courtyard of Ulun Carik Temple to the south has been arranged with a wide paving block. This cake has circular shape with a diameter of 3 cm and is made with clay mold.

It tastes good and is perfect for sitting in the morning, moreover, if coupled with warm Balinese coffee or tea. Laklak is white because it is not using food coloring, there is also a green one coming from the extract water of suji leaves. Jaja laklak is very easy to carry everywhere, so it’s good for food gift.

This cake is usually sold at food stalls at villages in the morning. This traditional cake is also sold in traditional markets and cake shops as well as has been taken advantage as appetizer at hotels. At the same time, it is often adopted as menu of option for citizens at wedding receptions or opening menu for participants of meetings, seminars and other gathering events at hotels or restaurants.

In cake shops, jaja laklak has been packed in plastic boxes with grated coconut and brown sugar sauce. But lately, the plastic packaging has begun to be abandoned because it causes a lot of plastic waste which is difficult to decompose. Unlike the cake traders at villagers, they use banana leaves to wrap the cakes.

This jaja laklak is usually sold for IDR 5,000 per wrap containing 5 or 4 pieces. The top appear-

ance of this cake is usually added with grated coconut and brown sugar sauce. In addition to local people, this cake is also favored by domestic and foreign tourists.

So naturally, it has become a hotel cake commonly served as an appetizer or welcome cake.

The ingredients of jaja laklak consist of rice flour, coconut (to be made into coconut milk), suji leaves, salt, brown sugar, granulated sugar and water. Preparation: put rice flour into a container and then pour hot water little by little while stirring until finely blended. Then, pour the coconut milk little by little as well, while continuing to stir. Then, added suji leaf water to create a distinctive aroma, add salt to taste and then stir until all the ingredients are evenly mixed.

Ultimately, prepare the mold and preheat it first. After that, pour the batter of laklak with a spoon in accordance with the mold hole. Cover the mold and then wait for it to get cooked.

Next, make brown sugar sauce by dissolving brown sugar and granulated sugar in boiled water.

Simultaneously, stir it until boiling and then lifted and filtered.

Boil it back until it thickens.

Coconut is shredded and mixed with salt according to taste.

How to present? First of all, put some pieces of jaja laklak on a plate or banana leaf in such away so as to look nice. Then, sprinkle them with grated coconut and pour the brown sugar sauce on top. Now, it is ready to taste! (kmb)

Mexican president took $100 mln drug bribe, trial hears Former Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto accepted a $100 million bribe from drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, a former collaborator told the kingpin’s trial.

“Mr. Guzman paid a bribe of $100 million to President Pena Nieto,?” the lawyer asked. “That is right,” Cifuentes responded, although later he said he was not sure of the exact amount.

“The message was that Mr. Guzman didn’t have to stay in hiding,?” the lawyer asked. Cifuentes said yes, that is what Guzman told him.

Cifuentes said he worked with the kingpin from 2007 until being arrested in 2013 and at first even lived with him for two years in the mountains of Mexico’s Sinaloa region for two years.

Guzman is accused of smuggling more than 155 tons of cocaine into the United States over a period of 25 years. If convicted, the 61-year-old could spend the rest of his life behind bars in a maximum security US prison.

When the Chapo trial began in November, Lichtman argued that Guzman was the scapegoat of corrupt Mexican governments, turncoat colleagues and the US Drug Enforcement Administration.

When the defense made those arguments, Pena Nieto was still president and his office denied the charges. He was replaced in November by the newly elected Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

In Mexico, Francisco Guzman, who was chief of staff to Pena Nieto, on Tuesday rejected the allegations from the Colombian, Cifuentes.

JAKARTA - Candidate for vice president, Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno said that while visiting more than 1,000 points to socialize and capture aspirations, he saw the public wanting a change in Indonesia.

Warriors score record 51 points in 1st quarter in win over Nuggets

The reigning champion Golden State Warriors amassed an NBA record 51 first-quarter points Tuesday on the way to a 142-111 win over Denver in a duel for the Western Conference lead.

The Warriors moved half a game ahead of the Nuggets atop the West, seizing control with a blistering opening period that included 10 three-pointers -- a franchise record for a first quarter.

They broke the previous league record for first-quarter points of 50, most recently achieved by the Phoenix Suns against Denver on November 10, 1990. “That was a fireworks show,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said, calling the first quarter display “beautiful, beautiful basketball.”

That Viking feeling: Iceland ‘thunderclap’ takes Asian Cup by storm

The bone-shaking “Viking thunderclap” made famous by Iceland fans at Euro 2016 has become a smash hit in the most unlikely of places -- at the Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates.

An expression of solidarity between supporters and players, the iconic slow chant -- accompanied by a single clap in unison -has been adopted by fans of teams including China, India, Thailand, Lebanon and Iran.

India captain Sunil Chhetri led his team of unlikely Vikings in a lusty thunderclap after the Blue Tigers thrashed Thailand 4-1 in Abu Dhabi.

Chinese fans followed suit after their team’s 2-1 win over Kyrgyzstan, and it has gathered pace since.

“Nobody does it like we do of course -- but it’s really cool that more countries are using it to support their team,” Hilmar Jokull, vice chairman of Iceland’s noisy Tolfan supporters group, told AFP. “We’re just a tiny country in the middle of

nowhere and we’re not expecting anyone to copy us -- especially countries of more than a billion people. “The Viking clap gets the players pumped up,” he added. “It gives them an adrenalin shock.”

Iceland, with a modest population of just 340,000, famously reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2016, knocking out England along the way.

Their passionate fans also won admirers around the world, although -- whisper it -- the thunderclap actually originated in Scotland, and supporters of Icelandic side Stjarnan pinched it after a Europa League game in 2014.

“They took it from Motherwell, but I think it’s similar to the technique Vikings used when they were sailing,” insisted Jokull.

“Banging a drum to keep the rhythm going

while they were rowing.”

- ‘Samheldni’ -

Wales and France also celebrated victories at Euro 2016 with impromptu versions of the Icelandic chant, which gradually gathers speed and ends with a throaty cry of “Huh!” For Iceland supporters, particularly Tolfan’s “ultra”-style fans, the thunderclap is a serious business, expressing the Icelandic concept of “samheldni” -- which combines elements of unity and cohesion.

“All your muscles go tense,” explained Jokull. “The sense of communion and togetherness between the team and the fans is amazing.”

Chinese fan Lin Dewei said his fellow supporters had adopted the thunderclap to “show the players love”.

“To tell them ‘jiayo!’ (fight) and also to say thank you for wearing the red shirt of China,” he added.

Thai fan David Prasong thought the thunderclap came from the Queen song “We Will Rock You” -- until corrected. “Embarrassing,” he grinned. “But it feels great to be part of it.”

While some fans at the Asian Cup may not be familiar with the chant’s origins, they make up for it with enthusiasm.

“I watched Euro 2016 and Iceland’s fans looked like they were having great fun,” said Lin. “That’s what it’s about really.” (afp)

Tottenham striker Harry Kane will be sidelined until March after suffering ankle ligament damage in Sunday’s defeat against Manchester United. Kane sustained the injury to his left ankle in the closing moments of the 1-0 loss at Wembley and scans have now confirmed the extent of the problem.

It is the third successive season the England captain has missed games due to an ankle injury.

“Following preliminary assessments, we can confirm that Harry Kane has damaged ligaments in his left ankle, sustained during Sunday’s match against Manchester United,” a statement on Tottenham’s website said on Tuesday.

“The striker will continue to be monitored by our medical staff as he commences rehabilitation and is expected to return to training in early March.”

Kane was injured after being caught between United defenders Phil Jones and Victor Lindelof while trying to set up a last-minute chance for Tottenham. He received treatment after the full-time whistle before walking off the pitch clearly in severe discomfort.

Vowing to return as fast as possible, Kane wrote on his Twitter account: “Injuries are part of the game but no one will be working harder to get back fit. Thanks for the messages.”

Kane’s absence is a major blow for Tottenham as they chase the first trophy of manager Mauricio Pochettino’s five-year reign.

The 25-year-old is Tottenham’s top scorer this season with 20 goals in 31 appearances in all competitions.

He had scored seven times in his last seven matches to keep thirdplaced Tottenham in with an outside chance in the Premier League title hunt, the north Londoners sitting nine points behind leaders Liverpool.

Kane, who won the Golden Boot as the World Cup’s leading marksman last year, also scored the penalty winner against Chelsea in the League Cup semi-final first leg. Now he will miss the second leg at Chelsea next week, as well as the FA Cup fourth-round trip to Crystal Palace and at least six crucial league games.

The first leg of Tottenham’s Champions League last-16 tie at home to Borussia Dortmund will also come too soon for Kane. He faces a race to be fit for the north London derby against Arsenal on March 2 and the second leg at Dortmund three days later.

England boss Gareth Southgate will hope Kane is back in contention for England’s opening Euro 2020 qualifier against the Czech Republic on March 22. More immediately, with South Korea forward Son Heungmin away on international duty and Brazil winger Lucas Moura also injured, Pochettino is left with Fernando Llorente and Vincent Janssen as his only fit senior forwards.

Speaking before tests confirmed Kane’s ligament damage, Pochettino had already admitted he was “worried” about the situation.

Newcastle survive Blackburn scare, Wednesday earn Chelsea clash

Newcastle survived an FA Cup scare at Blackburn as they blew a two-goal lead before hitting back to win 4-2 after extra time in Tuesday’s third-round replay.

Rafael Benitez sent out an under-strength line-up featuring eight changes from Newcastle’s 2-1 defeat at Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday. The standins made a fast start when Sean Longstaff scored his first goal for Newcastle.

The 21-year-old found the net inside the first minute with a deflected strike from outside the penalty area. Callum Roberts, handed his first Newcastle appearance since January 2015, doubled their lead in the 22nd minute with his first goal for the club.

But Blackburn pulled a goal back 12 minutes before half-time through former Newcastle forward Adam Armstrong.

And Republic of Ireland international Darragh Lenihan equalised for Blackburn with a header in first-half stoppage time.

Newcastle survive Blackburn scare, Wednesday earn Chelsea clash

Newcastle survived an FA Cup scare at Blackburn as they blew a two-goal lead before hitting back to win 4-2 after extra time in Tuesday’s third-round replay.

Rafael Benitez sent out an under-strength line-up featuring eight changes from Newcastle’s 2-1 defeat at Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday. The standins made a fast start when Sean Longstaff scored his first goal for Newcastle.

The 21-year-old found the net inside the first minute with a deflected strike from outside the penalty area. Callum Roberts, handed his first Newcastle appearance since January 2015, doubled their lead in the 22nd minute with his first goal for the club.

Warriors score record 51 points in 1st quarter in win over Nuggets

The reigning champion Golden State Warriors amassed an NBA record 51 first-quarter points Tuesday on the way to a 142-111 win over Denver in a duel for the Western Conference lead.

The Warriors moved half a game ahead of the Nuggets atop the West, seizing control with a blistering opening period that included 10 three-pointers -- a franchise record for a first quarter.

They broke the previous league record for first-quarter points of 50, most recently achieved by the Phoenix Suns against Denver on November 10, 1990. “That was a fireworks show,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said, calling the first quarter display “beautiful, beautiful basketball.”

Mexican president took $100 mln drug bribe, trial hears Former Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto accepted a $100 million bribe from drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, a former collaborator told the kingpin’s trial.

“The message was that Mr. Guzman didn’t have to stay in hiding,?” the lawyer asked. Cifuentes said yes, that is what Guzman told him.

Cifuentes said he worked with the kingpin from 2007 until being arrested in 2013 and at first even lived with him for two years in the mountains of Mexico’s Sinaloa region for two years.

Guzman is accused of smuggling more than 155 tons of cocaine into the United States over a period of 25 years. If convicted, the 61-year-old could spend the rest of his life behind bars in a maximum security US prison.

When the Chapo trial began in November, Lichtman argued that Guzman was the scapegoat of corrupt Mexican governments, turncoat colleagues and the US Drug Enforcement Administration.

When the defense made those arguments, Pena Nieto was still president and his office denied the charges. He was replaced in November by the newly elected Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

In Mexico, Francisco Guzman, who was chief of staff to Pena Nieto, on Tuesday rejected the allegations from the Colombian, Cifuentes.

China to cut taxes, keep policy flexible to counter slowdown

BEIJING - China plans to slash taxes, step up spending and provide ample financing to private and small enterprises to help counter the country’s worst slowdown since the global financial crisis and the impact of a bruising trade war with the U.S. hobble efforts to shore up growth.

In July-September, China’s economy expanded at a post-crisis slow annual pace of 6.5 percent despite government efforts to stem the downturn by ordering banks to lend more and by boosting spending on public works construction.

The government reported on Monday that China’s exports to the U.S. slipped in December as the delayed impact of President Donald Trump’s tariff hikes on Chinese products began to pinch demand. China’s trade surplus with the U.S. surged to a record $323.3 billion in 2018. World markets tumbled in response, but recovered on Tuesday after the news conference in Beijing, with Hong Kong’s Hang Seng jumping 1.8 percent while the Shanghai Composite index climbed 1.2 percent.

New Tourism Destination Offered

Armed with panoramic view of paddy fields, the Sukawati village government is now opening farming pathway at Subak Landep area of Sukawati village as a new tourist attraction.

The jogging track area in the form of 1.5 kilometer of ring road was opened to the public on Sunday (Dec. 2). To support the opening of the new tourist attraction, the village also prepares a number of supporting facilities such as a selfie spot.

Headman of Sukawati, Dewa Gede Dwi Putra, said the initial goal of the jogging track was to improve farming pathway in the Sukawati area because the previous conditions were damaged, narrow and muddy during rainy season. After being surveyed, it turned out that the road has the potential to be developed into sporting track as well as a new tourist attraction. “We see this as a potential for new tourist object.

Moreover, Sukawati village is currently moving into a tourism village,” he said.

Dwi Putra added the farming pathway has been equipped with five selfie spots, three gazebos, and five sets of seats. All of them are financed through village funds worth more than IDR 443 million.

This ring road has been operating since four months ago. “The

location remains beautiful, so it is very feasible as a family’s healthy choice for relaxing exercise with charming natural recreational nuances,” he explained.

Dwi Putra said the access from the main road to the outermost courtyard of Ulun Carik Temple to the south has been arranged with a wide paving block. This cake has circular shape with a diameter of 3 cm and is made with clay mold.

It tastes good and is perfect for sitting in the morning, moreover, if coupled with warm Balinese coffee or tea. Laklak is white because it is not using food coloring, there is also a green one coming from the extract water of suji leaves. Jaja laklak is very easy to carry everywhere, so it’s good for food gift.

This cake is usually sold at food stalls at villages in the morning. This traditional cake is also sold in traditional markets and cake shops as well as has been taken advantage as appetizer at hotels. At the same time, it is often adopted as menu of option for citizens at wedding receptions or opening menu for participants of meetings, seminars and other gathering events at hotels or restaurants.

In cake shops, jaja laklak has been packed in plastic boxes with grated coconut and brown sugar sauce. But lately, the plastic packaging has begun to be abandoned because it causes a lot of plastic waste which is difficult to decompose. Unlike the cake traders at villagers, they use banana leaves to wrap the cakes.

This jaja laklak is usually sold for IDR 5,000 per wrap containing 5 or 4 pieces. The top appear-

ance of this cake is usually added with grated coconut and brown sugar sauce. In addition to local people, this cake is also favored by domestic and foreign tourists.

So naturally, it has become a hotel cake commonly served as an appetizer or welcome cake.

The ingredients of jaja laklak consist of rice flour, coconut (to be made into coconut milk), suji leaves, salt, brown sugar, granulated sugar and water. Preparation: put rice flour into a container and then pour hot water little by little while stirring until finely blended. Then, pour the coconut milk little by little as well, while continuing to stir. Then, added suji leaf water to create a distinctive aroma, add salt to taste and then stir until all the ingredients are evenly mixed.

Ultimately, prepare the mold and preheat it first. After that, pour the batter of laklak with a spoon in accordance with the mold hole. Cover the mold and then wait for it to get cooked.

Next, make brown sugar sauce by dissolving brown sugar and granulated sugar in boiled water.

Simultaneously, stir it until boiling and then lifted and filtered.

Boil it back until it thickens.

Coconut is shredded and mixed with salt according to taste.

To legalize liquor, alcohol content reduced

Guests escape harm as avalanche hits Austrian hotel

DENPASAR - The efforts to legalize the local liquor industry are now in the process of reviewing by Perusda Bali and Bali provincial government expert group. This effort is also part of the wishes of the Governor of Bali, Wayan Koster. In order to be legal, the alcohol content in local liquor products will be reduced.

“The governor wishes it not to be too alcoholic. It will be good but the alcohol content is still within tolerance for the circulation,” said the Head of the Bali Trade and Industry Agency, I Putu Astawa, when confirmed on Monday (Jan. 14).

Astawa added that the alcohol content is still being studied by Perusda and the expert group considering the circulation of alcoholic beverages remains to be classified into negative investment. If the alcohol content can be less than 5 percent, it can be circulated.

“Our main target is tourism because Bali is a tourist destination.

On the one hand, there are many alcoholic products from outside the region, such as whiskey having high alcohol. Meanwhile, we have arrack, why can it not be?” he explained.

A member of Commission I of the Bali House of Representatives, I Nyoman Adnyana, said that alcoholic tax was once managed by a private company. However, it is no longer active because the third party got more profits. Tax of the alcohol should be better for the state so as to become more ideal.

for government interests and policies. Regarding the plan of Perusda to legalize the alcohol industry, according to him, it is legitimate.

“Next, it will be governed through provisions. Right now, Bali as a world tourist destination gets an exception about alcohol.

Adnyana added that liquor for hotels has been imported and only in small amount is local production even though for local alcohol such as arrack is widely used for ritual needs. The local wine makers need to be protected. If possible, it needs a regulation to protect the potential income and empowerment of local wine makers. In line with that, studies are also needed so that local arrack production can be standardized well. “Thus, it also provides opportunities to empower local businesses,” he said.

Around 60 guests were evacuated from an Austrian hotel and holiday apartment house early Tuesday after the buildings were engulfed by an avalanche, rescue services said.

“It was lucky the avalanche didn’t occur four hours earlier when all of the guests were in the dining room,” said Heribert Eisl, of the mountain rescue team in Ramsau am Dachstein, a village in the central Styria region where the accident happened at 1:00 am (0000 GMT).

The dining room was filled with snow up to one metre (three feet) below the ceiling, he told a news conference. The avalanche shattered the hotel’s windows and overturned vehicles in the car park, but no-one was injured, Eisl said. “We hadn’t expected the avalanche to wreak such damage,” he continued.

A number of areas in the Austrian Alps have been on high avalanche alert for the past 10 days as a result of heavy snowfall across the west and centre of the country since early January.

In some regions, more than three metres of snow has fallen.

“The reason we did this is because of the shutdown,” he added.

“We want to make sure that everything is right, so we sent out, we got this.”

The epidemic of drug overdose deaths is worsening at a startling rate among middle-aged women.

Middle-aged women dying at alarming rate from overdoses, CDC finds

THE epidemic of drug overdose deaths is worsening at a startling rate among middle-aged women, federal health experts reported Thursday.

Drug overdose deaths have soared among women over 30 starting in 1999 — with the biggest increase among women aged 45 to 64, the team at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found. Deaths from drug overdoses increased by 260 percent among women aged 30 to 64 between 1999 and 2017.

And the rate of drug overdose deaths from opioids increased by an enormous 492 percent among women aged 30 to 64.

While men are far more likely than women to die of drug overdoses, the pattern shows that the dangers of painkiller overuse across the U.S. population.

The U.S. is battling an everworsening epidemic of deaths from opioid drugs. Last year, the government reported more than 70,000 Americans died from drug overdoses, a 10 percent increase in just one year. By far the biggest cause was opioid drugs, especially synthetic opioids such as fentanyl.

Statistics show that most of those who die from overdoses first used opioids with a legitimate pre-

scription from a doctor. The CDC has been advising doctors to think twice before prescribing an opioid and advises patients to question their doctors before accepting a prescription.

The CDC’s Karin Mack and colleagues analyzed death certificates from all 50 states, looking at suicides, homicides, accidental and unknown causes of death. They took note of which drugs were in a person’s system at the time of death, including antidepressants, opioids, anxiety drugs, heroin and cocaine.

Many of those who died had more than one drug in their system at the time. “Deaths might have involved more than one substance,” Mack’s team wrote.

“Increases in deaths involving certain drugs might be the result of increases in certain drug combinations.” For instance, the CDC and other groups have been warning about the special danger of taking opioids and anxiety drugs such as Xanax or Valium at the same time.

Both slow breathing and, taken together, can make people stop

breathing.

But what stuck out was the increase in deaths among women 30 and older, and especially among women aged 45 and older.

“Prescription opioid–related deaths increased between 1999 and 2017 among women aged 30–64 years, with the largest increases among those aged 55–64 years,” Mack’s team wrote in their report, published in the CDC’s weekly report on death and disease.

“Prescription opioids clearly were overutilized for more than a decade,” said Dr. Michael Lynch, medical director of the Pittsburgh Poison Center at the University of Pittsburgh Medical center, who was not involved in the CDC study.

“We’ve seen overall prescribing decline since 2010 to 2012, but I think it’s informative to see that among women ages 30 to 64, prescription opioid overdose deaths still represent such a large number,” Lynch said.

Lynch also suspects suicide might be a bigger factor than the coding on death records can indicate. (net)

LONDON — Britain’s government needs a minister to focus on hunger, lawmakers recommended Thursday.

A report by a cross-party committee found that almost one-infive children under the age of 15 are growing up in a home that has “limited access to food ... due to lack of money or other resources.”

The U.K.’s levels of hunger are among the highest in Europe, the 56-page report added.

Britain is the world’s fifthrichest country.

The lawmakers — which include members of the ruling Conservatives and opposition parties — said the government had allowed hunger to “fall between the cracks.”

“Instead of seeing hunger as an issue abroad, the government’s New Year resolution should be one of taking urgent action at home to tackle hunger and malnutrition,” said Mary Creagh, an opposition lawmaker who chairs the Environmental Audit Committee.

A combination of high living costs, stagnating wages and the rollout of a new welfare benefits system was causing people to live with hunger, she added.

The committee’s report also said the issue is leading to both malnutrition and obesity as people are forced to rely on cheap, calorierich foods.

The recommendation follows a damning report on the rising levels

of poverty in Britain published last year by the United Nations. It found that almost one-in-three children in the U.K. are growing up in poverty.

It also comes as Britain prepares to leave the European Union on March 29, which the Bank of England has said could shrink the economy by as much as 8 percent in about a year.

Food bank use in the U.K. has already increased fourfold since 2012. There are now around 2,000 food banks across the country, compared to just 29 at the height of the financial crisis.

There is also concern among analysts that the country could face food shortages within weeks if Britain leaves the 28-country bloc without a trade deal.

Brexit means the U.K. will also lose billions in E.U. funding, which has greatly benefited the country’s most deprived areas.

The committee’s report recommends that a “minister for hunger” is appointed to analyze the scale, causes and impacts of households living with limited access to food — including malnutrition and obesity.

It also highlights that there is no national government measure for hunger, but think tanks and charities estimate that somewhere in the region of two to three million people are undernourished.

Waste management in Gilimanuk less maximized

NEGARA — Waste management in the Arum neighborhood, Gilimanuk village, is not yet optimal. So far, it just processes organic waste into compost. Meanwhile, other waste such as plastic, metal and others are still sent to Peh Landfill. This was found by the Chairman of the Jembrana House of Representatives, I Ketut Sugiasa, when visiting the processing site in the West End region of Jembrana on Monday (Jan. 14).

When Sugiasa came to the location of waste processing into compost managed by the Wana Asri Composting group last Monday, the condition was quiet. There was no activity in the building and there was still a lot of garbage.

Seeing these conditions, Sugiasa questioned to the village official accompanying him.

According to village official, there are activities in waste management every day. So that it can generate income for the community group. Sugiasa gave an example of waste management in Malang, East Java. Every day there is work to process waste starting from sorting, to managing so that it produces.

Moreover, this work is made into a main job because the results are quite promising. “After the garbage comes, it must be sorted and processed,” explained Sugiasa.

Sorted organic waste can be used as compost, while plastic waste can be further processed into economic value goods.

“All garbage can be processed and make money. So, the waste thrown to the landfill is only garbage that cannot really be processed,” he explained. According to Sugiasa, the condition of the

building should also be clean and odorless.

He suggested the waste processing at Gilimanuk must be able to produce, so that the group will receive training and if necessary a comparative study should be conducted to the proven waste processing location. Likewise, he hoped the equipment or machinery should be maintained and prevent from damages so as to function accordingly. For example, the leaf chopping machines should not be mixed with twigs. Thus, the equipment can last longer.

He considered that Gilimanuk region can be one of the examples, especially Gilimanuk, as a tourist area. Managing waste production is important. Without this, it will potentially become a problem in the future.

Meanwhile, headman of Gilimanuk, I Gede Wariana Perbawa, accompanied by the Wana Asri group leader, Ismail, revealed the composting group had only started processing waste. Admittedly the machines and equipment posing the aids from one of the companies at Gilimanuk are damaged.

This group has 16 members of Gilimanuk resident. They only work in processing garbage in the afternoon from 05:00. And this activity is still carried out as parttime work.

Currently, the processing is just limited to composting and the production has not been maximized.

According to him, the group stays to need a lot of equipment such as machines, carts and chainsaws.

CULTIVATION of gaga (non-irrigated field) rice variety has not been carried out by farmers at Pedawa village, Banjar, for decades. Having been abandoned for years, farmers at this village evoked rice cultivation in their area. The rise of growing rice on dry land began with simultaneous planting of gaga rice seeds four weeks ago. After commencing the planting, last week farmers implemented the tradition of the Namunang Pulpul.

This tradition is a legacy of the ancestors of the Pedawa village.

From the references and narratives of the local village leaders, Namunang Pulpul comes from two words namely namunang which means ‘collecting’ and pulpul means ‘tools for planting rice.’ Namunang Pulpul means a ceremony dedicated for the farming tools used when first planting gaga rice.

A local farmer, Wayan Dasar, accompanied by a senior resident, Nyoman Kalam, said that when the tradition was held, farmers make a shrine to worship Goddess Sri as one of the places to hold the ritual procession. Meanwhile, the Pulpul is collected into one, tied and presented with offerings. The offerings are presented on certain days or auspicious days until the farmers at this village harvest their gaga.

“This is the first ritual on the gaga rice field. After this, the offerings will continue to be presented on the following good days until the gaga rice is harvested,” he said.

Wayan Dasar has a land area of 700 square meters of gaga rice.

Such area is planted with 5 kg of rice seeds. Meanwhile, the rest

are planted with other productive plants such as corn, cassava, winged beans, ginger and aromatic ginger. The various variety of plant are termed as Bijaratus. Citizens can only get the results of bijaratus from the Pedawa village. This condition makes Pedawa unique to the tradition and cultivation of gaga rice. “All of this is called bijaratus used for the needs of the Pedawa customary ceremony. Harvest yield of gaga rice is needed for traditional ceremonies,” he said.

The unanimous determination of the citizens to restore their gaga rice cultivation received the attention from the Regent of Buleleng, Putu Agus Suradnyana (PAS). The regent took time to see directly the gaga rice cultivation at Pedawa village. He said that willingness of citizens to cultivate gaga rice is in line with the policies of the regional government focused on the agricultural sector. This happens because the agricultural sector is the focus of development to maintain food security, strengthen agriculture and improve the economy of the community and support the tourism development in Bali.

To support the efforts of Pedawa villagers, the regent suggested that it is necessary to develop an awigawig or customary bylaw program regarding the agriculture. “It is possible for the residents to leave a land area of 500 or 1,000 square meters for planting gaga rice in addition to other economical crops.

The rest of the land for planting the gaga rice is to preserve the existing ecosystem,” he said.

The regent added that local wisdom must continue to be preserved and developed for the progress of the region. Other than having beautiful nature, Pedawa also has the potential of excellent customs and culture. This condition can be combined and developed for local villages both in agriculture and tourism based on custom and culture. So, it just needs to develop the advantages making people or tourists more interested in coming to Pedawa village. “The nature is good, the scenery is good and cool.

Later on when it has developed, it will be improved in terms of infrastructure so that tourists are more comfortable when coming here,” he said. (mud)

Poverty line increases, number of poor population declines

This was revealed in the release of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) delivered by its head Adi Nugroho accompanied by Division Head of Social Statistics of BPS Bali, Dedi Cahyono, on Tuesday (Jan. 15). Based on the calculation in the past three periods, the number of poor people declined. However, the percentage of poor people in rural areas is still higher than in urban areas. In the urban areas, the percentage of poor people reaches 3.36 percent while in rural areas 5.08 percent, so the disparity is quite high.

Several factors cause poverty, especially in terms of inflation in urban areas. However, in rural areas there was deflation in September 2018. Inflation has been in line with economic growth. Economic growth in the third quarter was greater than the previous quarter, namely from 5.68 percent to 6.24 percent. If seen from the absorption of labor in the agricultural sector during the period of August 2018, there were more than in February 2018. Meanwhile, employment absorption in the construction sector increased in countryside, namely 3.14 percent and in urban areas experienced a decline of 7.61 percent. The percentage of poor people in Bali is also influenced by religious ceremonies. In September 2018, there were several Hindu religious activities. It was alleged to have caused an increase in the Poverty Line in the non-food group.

Measuring prosperity is carried out by expenditure approach because if it is measured by people’s income, it is more difficult to obtain than expenditure. The World Bank guides many countries including Indonesia to measure poverty with a degree of consumption.

Poverty line in March to September 2018 rose 1.53 percent from IDR 382,598 per capita per month to IDR 388,451 per capita per month in September 2018. Composition of the causes of poverty line is food at 68.02 percent in urban areas and food poverty line in rural area reached 70.89 percent. “Although the rate of (consumption level) poverty line has increased, the number of poor people has declined,” he said. This indicates that purchasing power of Balinese people is getting higher because of the average expenditure in September 2018 amounted to IDR 388,451, rising from IDR 382,598.

The commodities affecting the poverty line are rice, clove cigarettes, chicken meat, chicken eggs, wet cakes, shallots, tofu, tempeh, bread, ground coffee and instant coffee. “Clove cigarette with filter are still very influential in the formation of poverty line in Bali, where in urban areas occupies number two after rice and in countryside after rice and wet cakes,” he said.

The non-food factor influencing poverty is housing.

Rice and clove cigarettes are included in the ten commodities having the most influence on poverty line.

“Our society consumes more than 10 food groups. The most influencing poverty line is consumption volume and price. If the volume goes up along with falling prices, maybe it has no effect in that month. However, if the volume goes up accompanied by rising prices, it will have a stronger effect,” he explained.

In addition to the amount of poverty, BPS also measured expenditure inequality or the gini ratio. Gini ratio in September 2018 reached 0.364 while the number of inequality is in the range of 0 - 1. The closer it is to 1, the area will be more imbalanced. Population group is divided into three, namely the group 40 percent (low-expenditure), 40 percent (middle-expenditure), and 20 percent (high-expenditure).

Low inequality means being close to be even and high inequality means getting closer to imbalanced.

“Of the 40 percent of the lowest-spending population, in September 2018 it consumed 17.97 percent of the total consumption in the region, so the imbalance is low. If the percentage ranges 17 percent to 12 percent, it belongs to moderate inequality and under 12 percent means the inequality is high, but the low one is almost close to be even,” he closed. DENPASAR - The number of poor people in Bali dropped 3,420 people to 168,340 people, downed 3.91 percent in September 2018. The decline in the number of poor people in Bali continued to occur from March 2017, reaching 4.25 percent of the total population of Bali to 4.14 percent in September 2017; 4.01 percent in March 2018; and 3.91 percent in September 2018. This number placed Bali in the second lowest number of poverty in Indonesia after the Greater Jakarta.

Dozens of Japanese citizens undergo mediksa

MANGUPURA - Mediksa is a sacred ceremony for Hindus. It is the last ritual conducted prior to becoming a sulinggih or Brahmin priest and can only be possible for people having passed the stage of being bhawati. More interestingly, the sacred ritual was also carried out by 13 Japanese citizens at Griya Agung Bangkasa, Bongkasa, Abiansemal, on Monday night (Jan. 14).

They are Ida Pandita Mpu Minako Wira Raga Manuaba, Ida Pandita Mpu Naoko Siwa Paraga Manuaba, Ida Pandita Mpu Akiko Kusuma Daksa Manuaba, Ida Pandita Mpu Junichi Wiswa Mitra Manuaba, Ida Pandita Mpu Kumi Yawakerta Parama Manuaba, and Ida Pandita Mpu Yoshinori Kamya Yoga Manuaba. Then, there were also Ida Pandita Mpu Chikako Sanaka Dharmita Manuaba, Ida Pandita Mpu Tokina Daksa Vigneswara Manuaba and Ida Pandita Mpu Yusaka Mudgalya Daksa Manuaba. Son of the late Ida Sinuhun Siwa Putra Prama Manuaba, I Gede Sugata Yadnya Manuaba, said that dozens of Japanese citizens had passed through various processions. Initially, they were adopted as followers of Hinduism through the Sudhi Widani process several years ago. After that, they became bhawati and was initiated

into sulinggih or Brahmin priests.

“They have gone through a number of processes so that they can be initiated and they are aware of themselves being similar to the diksa initiation in general, including the seda raga or physical death procession denoting the stages of the diksa,” he said.

One of the Brahmin priests involved in the initiation rite, Ida Pandita Mpu Daksa Yaksa Acharya Manuaba, explained the dwijati (twice-born) procession was very sacred. Dwijati is the second birth for a human. The first birth is from the mother’s womb or commonly known as biological birth, while the second birth is from knowledge set down by the nabe or spiritual teacher better known as the ideological birth.

He mentioned the diksa procession passed through the process called Dwija. “So, to become a Brahman priest, the prospective is made to experience physical death.

After that, they are revived by spiritual teachers and this procession is called dwija. There is also an interpretation of dwijati, namely being born from a mother and from the Vedas, through the knowledge of spiritual teachers,” he explained.

The process of reviving, he affirmed, is not trivial thing. He said it requires a spiritual teacher who has good karmic savings. On that account, the energy of Krishna, in the Mahabharata epic when reviving the fetus born into Parikesit, was drained. He became powerless as his energy runs out. “So, this requires quite a lot good karmic savings to do the initiation,” he said. (kmb27)

LOS ANGELES - Game Of Thrones fans, this is it - the countdown to the beginning of the end. HBO has announced the date for the premiere of the first episode of the last ever series, after months of teasing what is to come.

In a new trailer, the network confirmed the long-awaited eighth and final series will air on 15 April at 2am and 9pm in the UK. The hit adaptation of the fantasy novels of George RR Martin returns to screens after a near two-year wait, bringing the story to an end after having fans glued since its start in 2011.

Game Of Thrones has made stars of many of its cast members, including Kit Harington, Emilia Clarke, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams and Lena Headey, who will all reprise their roles for the last outing.

The new trailer for the drama shows Harington, Turner and Williams walking down a dark corridor.

Harington’s character Jon Snow is seemingly coming to terms with his true parentage, as a member of the Stark family, alongside Turner and Williams’ characters Sansa and Arya Stark.

With six episodes planned, it looks like Game Of Thrones fans will be saying goodbye to Westeros in May. But while this may be the final showdown for the main players, fans can look forward to a prequel, with details revealed last week. The as yet unnamed series takes place thousands of years before the events in Game Of Thrones, with HBO saying it “chronicles the world’s descent from the Age Of Heroes into its darkest hour”. (net)

Egg poaches Instagram record from Kylie Jenner with most-liked photo

CALIFORNIA - An egg has become the most-liked Instagram post of all-time, poaching the record from reality star Kylie Jenner.

More than 25 million people have given their approval to the random photo, beating the more than 18 million likes received by a picture Jenner shared to announce the birth her daughter Stormi last year.

The egg photo was posted on 4 January and is the sole upload on the Instagram account world_record_egg, which is now asking for a blue tick - a symbol of verification for public figures and organisations.

Alongside the photo was a caption encouraging the “#EggGang” to “set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram”.

Jenner scrambled to respond and soon posted a video of herself trying to fry an egg on a hot pavement, with the brutal caption: “Take that little egg.”

Fans of the make-up mogul have since tried to help her reclaim her throne, but the egg reigns supreme for now.

The owner of the account has not been established, but an Instagram story - which allows users to post images and video in the form of a consistent slide-

show - was uploaded on Sunday night suggesting the creators are British.

It had two posts - one that showed a clip from the 1996 Three Lions (Football’s Coming Home) music video with an egg super-imposed over a football as it was booted into the back of the net.

The second post was a message from the account holders thanking everyone for their support, which said: “It doesn’t end here though, we’re just getting started.”

The profile also follows Lad Bible and The Archbishop Of Banterbury, which are both popular UK-based satire accounts. (net)

At least one suicide bomber blew himself up and gunmen engaged security forces in numerous shootouts during the assault on the DusitD2 compound, which includes a 101-room hotel, spa, restaurant and office buildings.

The attack was claimed by the Al-Qaeda-linked Somali group Al-Shabaab, which has repeatedly targeted Kenya since it sent its army into Somalia in October 2011 to fight the jihadist group.

The sight of armed Islamists and terrified civilians fleeing reminded

Kenyans of a 2013 Shabaab attack on the Westgate mall left 67 dead in a siege that stretched out over four days and led to sharp criticism of the security response.

In a televised address, Kenyatta said some 700 civilians had been evacuated throughout the attack at DusitD2, with the swift and effective work from security forces drawing widespread praise in local media.

“I can confirm that... the security operation at Dusit complex is over and all the terrorists eliminated,” Kenyatta said in a televised address

to the nation.

“As of this moment, we have confirmation that 14 innocent lives were lost to the... terrorists, with others injured.” Police sources and a mortuary official had previously reported 15 dead.

It was not immediately clear how many attackers there were in total. CCTV footage broadcast on local media showed four black-clad, heavily armed men entering the complex on Tuesday afternoon.

At least one of them blew himself up at the start of the attack. A

police source said two attackers had been shot dead Wednesday morning after a prolonged shootout.

“The two have red bandanas tied around their forehead and bullets strapped around their chest with several magazines each,” the senior police officer said. “Each had an AK47 which has been secured.”

- Briton, American among dead The attack began at about 3pm (1200GMT) on Tuesday afternoon, with a loud blast followed by gunfire and rapid calls for help spreading on Twitter.

Kenyan police chief Joseph Boinnet said the attack began with an explosion targeting three cars in

the parking lot and a suicide bombing in the foyer of the Dusit hotel.

Among the dead was an American citizen, a State Department official said. A mortuary official said there were also 11 Kenyan victims, a British victim, one with no papers as well as an unidentified torso of a male adult.
