MUMBAI - Bollywood superstars Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh have tied the knot in Italy, Indian media reported Thursday.

The celebrity couple got married in a private ceremony at Lake Como on Wednesday, according to the Press Trust of India news agency.

The pair have yet to comment or release pictures from the event which was closed to the media.

Padukone is arguably Indian cinema’s biggest female star currently, and she has also broken into Hollywood, starring in “xXx: Return of Xander Cage” opposite Vin Diesel.

Padukone, 32, and Singh 33, announced in a joint statement last month that their wedding would take place on November 14 and 15.

The couple reportedly started dating in 2013 but have kept details of their relationship largely out of the public eye.

Hindi film director Karan Johar, a friend of the couple, tweeted his congratulations.

“Such a stunning gorgeous and beautiful couple!!!! Nazar utar lo! (Keep the evil eye away) !! Badhai ho (Congratulations) !!! Love

you both!!! Here’s to a lifetime of love and joy!” he wrote on Wednesday.

The newlyweds have shared the silver screen together, including a controversial Bollywood epic earlier this year that sparked violent protests in northern India.

Padukone played a legendary Hindu queen and Singh a medieval Muslim ruler in the flick, which angered hardliners, some of whom burned down film sets and made threats towards the two stars.

GENEVA - A pearl and diamond pendant owned by Marie Antoinette before she was beheaded during the French Revolution sold for $36 million at an auction on Wednesday, shattering its pre-sale estimate of up to $2 million.

The Sotheby’s auction at an ultra-luxurious hotel on the banks of Lake Geneva saw feverish bidding for a 10-piece collection owned by the ill-fated queen, featuring jewels unseen in public for two centuries. The 10 items, which had been estimated to fetch a total of roughly $3 million, sold

for a combined sum of nearly $43 million, Sotheby’s said.

A diamond brooch pegged to go for roughly $80,000 (70,000 euros) sold for $1.75 million, excluding fees, one of several pieces that brought in more than 20 times its estimated worth.

But the highlight was the pendant featuring an oval diamond and drop-shaped pearl, which Sotheby’s said went to an anonymous, private buyer, without giving further details.

Sotheby’s also said the pendant set a new record price for a pearl

jewel sold at auction.

“Marie Antoinette’s pendant is simply irreplaceable and the price it fetched is about far more than the gem itself,” Eddie LeVian, the chief executive of jewellers Le Vian, said in a statement.

“It captures everyone’s imagination,” he added.

“This is the ultimate proof, if it were needed, that the world’s ultra high net worth individuals love rare, natural fancy coloured diamond and pearls jewels as investments, and especially those with royal provenance.” (afp)

British Prime Minister Theresa May suffered a huge blow on Thursday as Dominic Raab quit as her Brexit secretary over a proposed EU withdrawal agreement. May was preparing to start selling her Brexit deal to parliament, boosted by news that Europe is preparing a rapid summit to sign off on the agreement.

But the ground began to shift beneath her when Raab said he could not back the draft deal. “I cannot reconcile the terms of the proposed deal with the promises we made to the country in our manifesto,” he said.

“You deserve a Brexit secretary who can make the case for the deal you are pursuing with conviction.

“I must resign.” Raab, who had been in place since July, resigned less than an hour after Shailesh Vara quit as a junior Northern

Ireland minister over the draft accord.

The pound sterling lost nearly one percent of its value against the dollar following Raab’s resignation, wiping out gains since Tuesday as the draft agreement emerged. At 0900 GMT, the pound stood at around $1.2870, compared to $1.2992 at 2200 GMT on Wednesday.

May had secured her cabinet’s collective approval for the agreement during a five-hour meeting on

Wednesday, an important step that helped allay growing fears in the business community of a disorderly divorce.

She was due to set out the terms of the draft withdrawal agreement with the European Union to parliament’s lower House of Commons, which must approve the deal before Brexit day on March 29.

European Council President Donald Tusk said in Brussels that unless problems emerge as EU member states examine the deal,

he will host a summit to sign the accord in Brussels on November 25. May’s governing centre-right Conservative Party -- which does not command a Commons majority -- was already split between Brexiteers and those who wanted to remain in the union, and now many on both sides of that divide oppose her deal.

Raab had backed Britain leaving the EU in the 2016 referendum, while Vara wanted the UK to stay in the bloc.

Potential of Bali MSMEs remains very large

THE potential to work on micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Bali remains very large because Bali is a tourist destination targeting both local communities and tourists from various countries. This was stated by CEO of Bank Mandiri for Regional XI Bali and Nusra, Rully Setiawan, during a visit to the office of Bali Post on Wednesday (Nov. 14).

opportunity for the MSMEs in Bali to work on it. Bank Mandiri

is committed to developing the MSMEs through its programs such as the People’s Business Credit (KUR), BUMN Creative Home and the Mandiri Young Entrepreneur (WMM). For KUR, Mandiri had channeled funds amounting to IDR 525 billion during the period of January October 2018. “The service and

He realized that all the MSME players did not have access to banking. For this reason, there is a BUMN Creative Home program providing access to information, education, coaching and involvement of entrepreneurship in a number of events. Finally, he continued, the MSMEs coached

by Bank Mandiri got the opportunity to participate in the exhibition during the implementation of the IMF-WB Annual Meeting in Nusa Dua. “The results are quite a lot. In addition, the MSME players are not only known in Bali but also to meeting participants from various countries,” he said.

Aside from the BUMN Creative Home, Bank Mandiri also has the Mandiri Young Entrepreneur program. This program seeks to help young people having innovative work to make a business breakthrough. Every year, three young entrepreneurs are sent to compete nationally.

“We are ready to help, especially the younger generation who have innovation to make a business breakthrough. In Bali, there are 55 branches of Bank Mandiri ready to reach the MSME business. In addition, it has micro branch offices for rural areas,” he said.

On that occasion, he also briefly expressed the program

of Bank Mandiri to further increase tourist visits to Bali. This state-owned bank has a “Bali Holiday” program to make Bali never empty of tourists.

He said that currently Bali is almost never deserted from tourists. However, to further increase the visits, Bank Mandiri seeks to assist promotion through collaboration with a number of merchants in Bali. “We have 106 merchants working together, where all of them are local merchants with good reputation,” he said.

This program is viralized through all Bank Mandiri branches in Indonesia. He expected that through the benefits and privileges given to customers and prospective customers of Bank Mandiri when using the products of Bank Mandiri in cooperation with the merchants, more tourists will come to Bali. “Hopefully, the gimmick of the merchants and privileges granted, customers and prospective customers of Bank Mandiri will get interested in traveling to Bali,” he said.

He said the current program will end in January 2019. Bank Mandiri, he said, also carried out a number of collaborations to drive the Bali’s economy through shopping festival cooperated with a number of shopping centers in Bali. “We will soon participate in the Bali Great Sale by offering a number of benefits and privileges for users of Bank Mandiri products and potential users,” he concluded. Student transport services continue to be expanded Tabanan targets Selemadeg and East Selemadeg in 2019

Tabanan - Student transportation services in Tabanan district (Trans Serasi) continuously attempt to expand the coverage. Moreover, in the amended Regional Budget 2018, a total of IDR 450 million is allocated for additional services in three sub-districts, namely SMPN 4 Pupuan, SMPN 3 Baturiti and SMPN 1 Kerambitan junior high school. Not only that, the Trans Serasi program is going to open the route targeting the Selemadeg and East Selemadeg subdistrict, but the government remains to face budgetary problems..

“This budgetary amendment is used for student transportation services worth IDR 450 million in the three sub-districts with the addition of the fleet,” said the Head of the Tabanan Transportation Agency, I Made Agus Harta Wiguna, on Wednesday (Nov. 14).

He added that so far the coverage of student transportation services has targeted seven sub-districts, while three sub-districts namely the Selemadeg, West Selemadeg and East Selemadeg subdistrict have not but remain in the development stage.

To cover three sub-districts namely Kerambitan, Pupuan and Baturiti in 2018, the additional fleet are attempted for respectively SMPN 4 Pupuan (8 units), SMPN 3 Baturiti (10 units) and SMPN 1 Kerambitan (11 units). “The fleet addition has been running since the beginning of November,” he said.

With the additional fleets at these three schools, the total student transportation service (Trans Serasi) in Tabanan district amounts to 177 fleets and reaches 15 schools, with the capacity of even more than 100 percent.

“Sometimes, we are still overwhelmed as well because the interested passengers continue to increase,” he said.

He added the progress for the additional services in East Selemadeg, the district government of Tabanan prepares 13 units for SMPN 2 East Selemadeg and five units for SMPN 1 Selemadeg. “For fleet procurement, we make cooperation with public transportation owned by residents. In this program, we always indeed empower local residents in the operation of the student transportation, so the public

transportation owned by citizens is not suspended,” he explained.

He emphasized that before budgeting for the purchase of services, the Transportation Agency also sees the commitment of the drivers first. Just a reminder, Trans Serasi is one of the district innovations to reduce the number of accidents and congestion in Tabanan. The Trans Serasi program is expected to be able to reduce congestion, accidents, delinquencies and abuse cases in Tabanan, especially those frequently occurred in children. (kmb28)

Tourism Fishing Festival 2018 held to introduce Kedonganan Beach

KEDONGANAN is a coastal village on the southern of Bali Island and very well known as fish-producing village. However, in the past ten years this region has developed into one of the tourist resorts getting remarkably popular for its seafood. Kedonganan village has two coasts with their respective attractions, namely Kedonganan Beach with white sand and sunset view in the west as well as the coast with beautiful mangrove forests in the east.

Greek silk road town finds itself back in fashion

SOUFLI - Inside the machinecrammed Mouhtarides factory near the Greek-Turkish border, Ioanna Pistola deftly spins a silk thread in a loom, ignoring the deafening noise around her.

“I’ve been working in this hall for 20 years,” the middle-aged weaver shouts above the din.

The dormant, isolated town of Soufli has been a key centre for Greek silk production since the 19th century.

This was also the first area in Europe to rear silkworms after they were smuggled by Byzantine monks out of India in the 6th century AD. Silk, much of it homemade, has sustained the town of around 4,000 inhabitants for decades, although the number of factories has fallen.

Now though, say the town’s last two active producers, silk is again de rigueur on the world’s most prestigious catwalks, and demand from designers for the luxurious fabric is on the up.

“Penetrate into the world of fashion, this is what Soufli is trying to do... there is no haute couture without silk nowadays,” says Yiorgos Tsiakiris, owner of the factory that bears his name.

“The area’s great advantage is its long experience (with sericulture)... This is where silk was

first produced in Europe... we should exploit this advantage,” he adds.

His production site is not far from the Mouhtarides factory, where marketing manager Despina Bakarou also talks of concerted action to make the most of current trends.

“Silk is making a comeback.

Fashion designers are asking for it. We are trying to maximise the quantity and quality of our production,” she says.

- Drawing on experience -

Silk has played a role in the family history of practically everyone who originates from Soufli.

“Every family grew silk,” says Matina Lekka, a local pensioner, whose mother worked at the Givre factory before it closed in the 1960s.

In its heyday, the factory, founded by two Jewish brothers, Bohor and Eliezer Givre, exported silk as far as the French cities of Lyon and

Bordeaux.

But after World War II, textile makers turned to cheaper synthetic materials such as nylon, and the area’s once-prided infrastructure fell into disuse.

A further blow came at the end of the 1990s, with the opening up of the silk market.

The town’s two factories currently export silk clothes and handicrafts to Bulgaria, Slovakia and Cyprus, and fulfil design orders from British stylists.

- China leaves an opening -

While the two factories produce a small amount of silk themselves,

most of what they use to make their items comes from China.

N o w, s a y s Tsiakiris, there is a real opportunity for European sericulture to bounce back amid China’s increasing industrialisation, which has led to a decline in its rurally-based silk production.

“There is great demand for silk. And there is a shortage... China in recent years has given up thousands of hectares of mulberry trees, and people are moving out of rural areas to the cities,” he said.

Soufli is surrounded by 300 hectares (741 acres) of mulberry trees -- the leaves of which are eaten by the silkworms --, providing an abundance of a raw material waiting for revival.

Each silkworm cocoon can yield a continuous silk strand of up to 2.5 kilometres (1.6 miles) long.

“There are also thousands of mulberry trees still in the area, it’s a basis to build on,” says Tsiakiris.

With enough trees, a reliable crop of silkworms can emerge in about three years, he notes.

“There are European investors standing by, ready to spend up to 20 million euros ($23 million) here,” he adds, declining to divulge names.

“There is major interest, these people are worried about the future of sericulture in China,” the factory owner tells AFP.

Building other sources of economic growth

DENPASAR — Discussion about Bali can last endlessly. Nature, culture and people are solid entity giving its own impression. This was revealed by Deputy Director of Bank Indonesia for Bali Representative Office, Azka Subhan A, while serving in Bali.

Having been two years in charge, Azka was very impressed with Balinese people that are friendly, flexible, creative and innovative, while all the stakeholders can work together. When he first time served in Bali in the end of 2016, he was immediately faced with the high price of chili surpassing IDR 100,000 per kg at the beginning of 2017. The price increase also lasted for a long time, namely three months from January to March.

This man who is also a graduate of agricultural studies certainly feels disturbed by the price increase of the chili. In April, after the prices began to subside, Bank Indonesia began to develop a chili cluster for the MSMEs. The Chili Cluster was established at Ababi, Karangasem.

He saw there was potential for marginalized land in the area, whereas the land could be used to grow chili. “In the area, many young people are diligent. They plant chili throughout the year without seeing the season,” said the man born in Semarang. When the rainy season arrives, chili flowers are feared to fall out but anticipated

by covering the chili garden with plastic rain shelter.

It makes the supply of chili available throughout the year and the price of chili can be controlled.

According to Bank Indonesia, the economic price of chili is between IDR 30,000 - IDR 50,000, but at the price of IDR 15,000, chili farmers have reached break event point (BEP).

By creating clusters, Bank Indonesia can help seeds, hand tractor equipment, cultivators and lawn mowers. The cluster lasted for three years, so within three years farmers at Ababi received the assistance from Bank Indonesia (BI).

In addition to chili, he was also faced with the shortage and even the absence of commodities like garlic planted in Bali. Almost 90 - 95 percent of them are imported.

But he admitted that garlic is indeed not appropriate to be planted in Indonesia. After conducting a survey of land in Bali, he found tens of hectares of land in Wanagiri (Buleleng) that can be planted with garlic. The land sits at an altitude of 1,300 above sea level. Finally,

Bank Indonesia made a cluster of garlic in the area on 2 hectares of land with 2 demonstration plots.

Azka said the area is suitable for cultivating garlic. Moreover, Indonesia is experiencing a weakening rupiah. By reducing imports, the weakening of rupiah can be controlled.

Along with the development, the planting area of garlic commodities expanded. Farmers started heading to 50 hectares. They are a group of garlic farmers. Results of the planting are partially consumed, while the good harvest yields are sold in the form of seeds to outside the Island of Bali.

Bali is indeed rich in agricultural products. One of the prominent products of Bali agriculture is cacao. The size of farming is small, but the quality of cacao is competing against other countries. That’s why Indonesian cacao is exported to France and Japan. “To support the development of other sources of economic growth, this is the concrete form because Bali too much relies on tourism being prone to issues,” he added. “We assure the nation that his aforementioned absence has nothing to do with his physical health and wellbeing which have been the subject of speculation,” he added.

The outspoken leader remains popular at home even as he pursues a deadly drug war that has seen thousands killed and horrified western allies.

But he has regularly prompted theorising about his health by skipping events or discussing his ailments in public since taking power in 2016.

Duterte has said previously that he suffers from daily migraines and ailments including Buerger’s disease, an illness that affects the veins and the arteries of the limbs, and is usually due to smoking.

Despite his deadly crackdown on drugs, he also revealed in 2016 that he used to take fentanyl, a powerful opiate painkiller, because of a spinal injury from previous motorcycle accidents.

PORT MORESBY - If you are travelling to Papua New Guinea, you don’t need to pack a phrasebook, you need to bring an entire library. With 841 living tongues and a colourful creole lingua franca, this Pacific nation is the undisputed world champion of linguistic diversity.

From Pii in the mist-cloaked highlands to Toaripi on the shores of the gleaming Coral Sea, Papua New Guinea is a linguist’s paradise with one in 10 of the world’s languages found here.

The number of speakers of individual languages can range from a handful of people in the jungle -- not much more than an extended family -- to millions spread across provinces and terrains.

Experts point to the country’s relatively weak central government, deep valleys, almost impenetrable vegetation and roughly 600 islands to explain why a country of eight million people and smaller than Spain has such a bounty of languages, when 46 million Spaniards -- for all practical purposes -- make do with a dozen or so.

Many of these diverse tongues have developed undisturbed over tens of thousands of years, making Papua New Guinea something of a linguistic Galapagos.

To get by day-to-day, Papua New Guineans typically speak

three to five languages, and understand many more dialects.

But ironically they can sometimes struggle to render a simple sentence in one language into their mother tongue -- particularly when discussing numbers over 10 or when rural-based languages are deployed to describe life in the big city. When asked to say “there are more than 800 languages in Papua New Guinea” in Vula’a -- which has a couple of thousand speakers in the central province -- Port Moresby office worker Sonia Pegi has to call her dad just to make sure she has it right.

- ‘Pidgin English’ The country’s most widely spoken language is pidgin English or Tok Pisin, although this being Papua New Guinea, Tok Pisin only claimed its lingua franca status after beating out a pretender in the form of semi-creole Austronesian language Hiri Motu.

Tok Pisin, Hiri Motu and English are the country’s three official languages.

“Tok Pisin is derived 80-85 percent from English,” said Jenny Homerang who is starting a pidgin language course at the Australian National University in Canberra.

“But you also have bits of German and bits of Portuguese.”

In fact, Tok Pisin is something of a linguistic sponge, soaking up words from languages as distant as Taiwanese and Zulu, which dominates the southeastern corner of Africa. Suspected sorcerers -- who in Papua New Guinea can often be the victims of extreme violence -- are referred to as “sangoma”, a word familiar to anyone living in Johannesburg or Durban.

Tok Pisin is also a deeply expressive language: you can ‘bagarap’ your car in an accident, or relieve yourself in the ‘sithaus’.

But sometimes things get lost in translation. ‘Ol’ means ‘they’, not ‘all’, which can confuse a first-time visitor.

Similarly, ‘lukim yu bihan’ is not an instruction to turn around, but a way of saying ‘goodbye’. (afp)

UK inflation steady above Bank of England’s target

LONDON - Official figures show inflation in Britain held steady above the Bank of England’s target level in October.

The Office for National Statistics said

the consumer prices index in the year to October was unchanged at 2.4 percent — above the Bank’s target of 2 percent.

The Bank has raised its main interest rate on two occasions over the past year,

taking it to 0.75 percent, in order to rein in inflation stoked by the Brexit vote in June 2016. That triggered a sharp fall in the value of the pound and raised the cost of imports.

The Bank, though, is not expected to hike again until there’s clarity over Britain’s exit from the European Union. On Wednesday, Prime Minister Theresa May is briefing her Cabinet on a draft deal.

LONDON - Brexit is already having an impact on Britain’s labor market, with the number of people from the European Union working in the country falling by a record amount.

The Office for National Statistics said Tuesday the number of EU nationals working in Britain fell by 132,000 in the three months to September compared with the year before, to 2.25 million. That’s the largest annual fall since comparable records began in 1997.

Some decline would be expected given economic improvements elsewhere in the EU over the past couple of years. However, it appears that the vote to leave the EU in June 2016 has had an impact as well. Not only did it lead to a sharp fall in the pound, which made Britain a relatively less attractive proposition, it also created more

uncertainty about the future status of EU workers in Britain.

“The sharp fall in EU migrant workers over the last year shows that Britain’s labor market is already changing ahead of Brexit,” said Stephen Clarke, senior economic analyst at the Resolution Foundation.

EU nationals in Britain have lived in uncertainty about their future work rights since the Brexit vote, which was largely driven by concerns over immigration. One of the main tenets of EU membership is the freedom for citizens to move and work anywhere within the 28country bloc.

Discussions over Britain’s exit in March 2019 are still going on and there are doubts as to whether the British Parliament will back any deal Prime Minister Theresa May strikes. Though the government has sought to assuage concerns of EU citizens in Britain about their future, talk of Britain crashing out of the bloc without a deal on future relations is adding to uncertainty.

The departure of more EU nationals comes at a time when the U.K. labor market is doing well.

The number of people in work was up by 350,000 on the year to 32.41 million, with British nationals working up by 448,000 to 29 million. Overall, the unemployment rate is super-low at 4.1 percent despite a 0.1 percentage point rise

over the most recent period.

Wages are rising, too, with employers seemingly having to respond to scarce labor by giving workers more money. Average earnings over the three months to September, excluding bonuses, were 3.2 percent higher than the corresponding period a year earlier. That is the highest rate since a decade ago, before the global financial crisis pushed the economy into recession.

How the labor market performs over the coming few months will likely depend on what happens with Brexit. The government has insisted that EU citizens’ freedom of movement will end after a transition period currently expected to last for 21 months past March.

What rights they will get after that

“Firms who employ a large share of migrant workers must think now about adjusting to a lower migration environment — in terms of the workers they employ, what they produce and how they operate,” said the Resolution Foundation’s Clarke.

Most forecasters think that a no-deal Brexit, which would see tariffs slapped on British exports to the EU, border checks reinstalled, and restrictions on travelers and workers, would damage the British economy.

The Standard & Poor’s ratings agency last month said a no-deal Brexit could push the British economy into recession and cause unemployment to spike to 7.4 percent by 2021. (ap)

The disease has already caused a spike in pork prices in China since first emerging in August, and fuelled growing fears of a major impact on the world’s largest pig producer.

“The African swine fever prevention and control situation is very serious,” said a joint statement by the ministries of agriculture, transport, and public security that was posted late Wednesday. “The epidemic has appeared in 17 provinces, spreading to large pig-farming provinces in southern China.”

In early September government-controlled media said African swine fever had been discovered in just five provinces, with the agriculture ministry saying at the time that the virus was “generally under control.”

The three ministries called for strengthened supervision of the transport of live pigs to prevent the disease spreading further.

China reported its first case in August in northeast-

ern Liaoning province.

Since then, the disease has steadily moved south into major pork-producing provinces despite efforts to contain it, including by culling tens of thousands of pigs.

The ministries blamed the spread on the flouting of restrictions imposed on moving pigs out of affected areas.

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) warned in August that the disease could spread to other parts of Asia.

African swine fever is not harmful to humans but causes deadly haemorrhagic fever in domesticated pigs and wild boar. With no antidote or vaccine, the only known control method is to cull animals.

Around half of the world’s pigs are raised in China, and Chinese are the planet’s biggest per capita consumers of pork, according to the FAO. (afp)

SINGAPORE - Diplomatic niceties have been in short supply for Aung San Suu Kyi at a summit in Singapore, where the one-time rights champion has been publicly chastised over her handling of the Rohingya crisis, compounding a dismal week for Myanmar’s de facto leader.

Suu Kyi has refused to speak up for the Rohingya, a stateless, persecuted Muslim minority driven by violence into Bangladesh in huge numbers.

Her reticence on the issue has cut her adrift from the global rights community including the United Nations, whose investigators say last year’s Myanmar army campaign amounted to genocide.

Many of the honours previously showered upon Suu Kyi for her stoic, peaceful resistance during

years of house arrest by Myanmar’s junta have been rescinded.

This week the bad news got worse.

On Monday Amnesty International, whose campaign to free Suu Kyi galvanised global recognition of her democracy struggle, stripped her of its highest honour over her “indifference” to the atrocities against the Rohingya.

One day later at a regional summit in Singapore, criticism replaced the garlands she has received on the global stage since steering her party into government in 2016.

Boeing didn’t tell airline pilots about features of a new flight-control system in its 737 MAX that reportedly is a focus of the investigation into last month’s deadly crash in Indonesia, according to pilots who fly the jet in the U.S. Pilots say they were not trained in new features of an anti-stall system in the aircraft that differ from previous models of the popular 737.

The automated system is designed to help pilots avoid raising the plane’s nose too high, which can cause the plane to stall, or lose the aerodynamic lift needed to keep flying. The system automatically pushes the nose of the plane down.

But if that nose-down command is triggered by faulty sensor readings — as suspected in the Lion Air crash — pilots can struggle to control the plane, which can go into a dive and perhaps crash, according to a Boeing safety bulletin and safety regulators.

The bulletin included new details on how to stop a runaway series of events from leading to a crash, pilots say.

“It is something we did not have before in any of our training. It wasn’t in our books. American didn’t have it,” said Dennis Tajer, a 737 pilot and spokesman for the pilots union at American Airlines. “Now I have to wonder what else is there?”

Jon Weaks, a 737 captain and president of the pilots union at Southwest, said he couldn’t recall a similar omission in a Boeing operating manual.

“I was not pleased. How could something like this happen? We want to be given the information to keep our pilots, our passengers and our families safe,” he said.

Weaks said he is satisfied that “we have been given, finally, the correct information.”

The MAX is the newest version of the twin-engine Boeing 737. More than 200 have been delivered to airlines worldwide, including American, Southwest and United.

Boeing Chairman and CEO Dennis Muilenburg said Tuesday that the Chicago-based company remains confident the MAX is a safe airplane. He said Boeing did not withhold operating details from airlines and flight crews.

“We ensure that we provide all of the information that is needed to safely fly our airplanes,” Muilenburg told Fox Business Network. He said Boeing bulletins to airlines and pilots “point them back to existing flight procedures” to handle the kind of sensor problem suspected in last month’s crash.

A Southwest spokeswoman said the new automated maneuvering system was not included in the operating manual for MAX models. An American spokesman said the airline was unaware of some new automated functions in the MAX but hasn’t experienced nose-direction errors. A United spokesman said Boeing and the FAA do not believe additional pilot training is needed.

The Federal Aviation Administration issued an emergency directive last week to airlines, telling them to update cockpit manuals to include instructions

for how pilots can adjust flight controls under certain conditions.

“The FAA will take further action if findings from the accident investigation warrant,” the agency said in a statement Tuesday.

On Oct. 29, Lion Air Flight 610 plunged into the Java Sea shortly after takeoff from Jakarta. All 189 people on board were killed.

John Cox, a former 737 pilot and now a safety consultant to airlines, said Boeing’s steps since the crash “have been exactly correct. They have increased pilot awareness, they have reminded them of the proper procedure to disable (the automatic nose-down action), which stops the problem.”

Indonesian investigators say that the Lion Air Boeing 737 MAX 8 experienced malfunctions with sensors that indicate the angle of the nose on four recent flights, including the fatal one.

The Wall Street Journal reported that U.S. and Indonesian investigators are increasingly focusing on the way that the plane’s automated control systems interact. They are also questioning whether the FAA and Boeing adequately analyzed potential hazards if the systems malfunction and send faulty data to the plane’s computers, according to the newspaper.

Shares of Boeing Co. ended Tuesday down $7.52, or 2.1 percent, at $349.51 after falling to $342.04 earlier in the day. (ap)

The western counterpart, however, features a cleaner and longer stretch of sand, with various water sport activities and gear rentals, cafes, and stalls serving anything from grilled seafood and local cuisine to sandwiches and burgers.

The water at Pandawa Beach, as with most of Bali’s southern coastline, is an exotic combination of blue and green, as local seaweed farmers still tend to their patches along these coasts. On clear days with mild winds, it is a great place to swim, or you can hire a sea kayak, don some life vests and paddle out for fun, and even grab a surfboard to catch a wave beyond the reef breaks (swells are usually consistent with the strongest southern ocean currents moving out in unpredictable directions, so it is strictly for advanced surfers).

BANGKOK - Thousands of child boxers compete in Thailand’s traditional martial art with dreams of belts, glory and prize money -but the death of a 13-year-old has lit up a sensitive debate over whether competitors start too young.

Centuries-old Muay Thai -known as the art of eight limbs for the different ways opponents can strike each other with knees, fists, kicks, and elbows -- is the country’s de facto national sport and remains a source of immense pride.

But new research within Thailand suggests that the earlier Muay Thai boxers begin, the more prone they are to a range of injuries.

Lawmakers under the country’s military leaders have also drafted revamped legislation that would bar children under 12 from competing in the contact sport.

The push has gathered new momentum in light of the death of 13-year-old Anucha Tasako, who died from a brain haemorrhage after his similarly aged opponent struck him with multiple blows to the head at a Saturday charity fight near Bangkok.

Anger erupted on social media where footage of the critical moments of the bout was uploaded.

Deputy prime minister Prawit Wongsuwan instructed the sports ministry to review the legislation, which also requires parental consent for those between 12 and 15 and “physical safety measures”.

“The competitions must have appropriate, protective gear from the arena manager,” Prawit said according to a spokesperson.

- Brain cell damage It is common for Muay Thai fighters to start young and Anucha embarked on his career when he was eight years old.

He grew up in the northeastern province of Kalasin and after his parents parted ways he spent time with a relative who had a Muay Thai gym.

Gripped by the sport, Anucha moved to Bangkok to stay with an uncle and train.

By the time he got to the charity match in Samut Prakan on Saturday he had fought 170 times, according to local media reports.

Critics point to alleged child exploitation as gamblers bet on bouts or promoters shave off prize money.

But it is the unseen health consequences that have received the most attention.

A five-year study from 2012 by the Child Safety Promotion and Injury Prevention Center at Ramathibodi Hospital carried out MRI scans on the brains of 335 child boxers and compared them with 252 non-boxers of the same ages.

Hospital director Adisak Plitponkarnpim said it was “clear” that child boxers suffered more brain cell damage and ruptures, and also had lower IQs. “Their young age increases the damage because their skull and muscles are not yet fully developed.”

He said that accumulative injuries could put them at higher risk for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases as adults. (afp)

LOS ANGELES - LeBron James poured on 44 points to leapfrog Wilt Chamberlain on the NBA’s all-time scoring rankings on Wednesday as the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Portland Trail Blazers 126-117.

James’ highest points haul since joining the Lakers saw him vault over Chamberlain into fifth place on the scoring rankings, leaving him with 31,425 points from his career.

The 33-year-old made a point of snaffling the game ball after the buzzer sounded on what was a fourth straight victory for the Lakers, who improved to 8-6 to move up to seventh in the Western Conference standings.

James later paid tribute to Chamberlain when asked to reflect on passing the Lakers icon.

“One of the most dominant forces we ever had in our game, along with Shaq (O’Neal), one of the greatest Lakers to play the game,” James said.

“I’m just happy we got another win. But any time my name is mentioned with some of the greats, I always think back to my home town and how far I’ve come. That’s it for me.”

James, who had expressed frustration earlier in the season after the Lakers slow start to the campaign, said he believes the team is gradually heading in the right direction.

“It’s still a process for us,” James said. “We want to try and get better every day. And I believe we’ve done that since the start of training camp.

“We’ve got better since September and into October, and now

we’ve got better in November. We just want to try and continue it.”

The only downside for the Lakers came with an injury to Rajon Rondo, who faces at least two weeks on the sidelines after suffering a broken hand.

Premier League to weigh-up controversial ‘golden goodbye’ for outgoing chief exec

The English Premier League is set to consider a controversial plan to reward outgoing chief executive Richard Scudamore with a ‘golden goodbye’ of some £5 million ($6.5 million) at a meeting on Thursday.

News that Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck, who also chairs the Premier League’s audit and remuneration committee, had proposed each of English football’s 20 top-flight clubs contribute some £250,000 each broke in a report by the Daily Mail newspaper on Tuesday.

This was the same day the league announced that television executive Susanna Dinnage had been chosen as Scudamore’s successor.

But the comparatively rare appointment of a woman to a major position in British sport, was soon overshadowed by the furore regarding

The World Cup finalists have been forced to play their last two competitive home matches behind closed doors as part of their punishment imposed by UEFA after a swastika was marked on their pitch before a Euro 2016 home qualifier against Italy.

That was just the latest in a litany of offences for racism that has seen Croatia consistently punished. “We are facing a very difficult match,” Modric told reporters on the eve of the game at the Maksimir stadium.

“We need to be patient, wise and not to rush,” added the 33-year-old Real Madrid midfielder. “Playing in front of full stands is an additional motivation. The fans will certainly be of major importance for us, we will give our best and try to win.”

Croatia certainly need a win if they are to press their hopes in the nascent Nations League. The western counterpart, however, features a cleaner and longer stretch of sand, with various water sport activities and gear rentals, cafes, and stalls serving anything from grilled seafood and local cuisine to sandwiches and burgers.

The water at Pandawa Beach, as with most of Bali’s southern coastline, is an exotic combination of blue and green, as local seaweed farmers still tend to their patches along these coasts. On clear days with mild winds, it is a great place to swim, or you can hire a sea kayak, don some life vests and paddle out for fun, and even grab a surfboard to catch a wave beyond the reef breaks (swells are usually consistent with the strongest southern ocean currents moving out in unpredictable directions, so it is strictly for advanced surfers).

BANGKOK - Thousands of child boxers compete in Thailand’s traditional martial art with dreams of belts, glory and prize money -but the death of a 13-year-old has lit up a sensitive debate over whether competitors start too young.

Centuries-old Muay Thai -known as the art of eight limbs for the different ways opponents can strike each other with knees, fists, kicks, and elbows -- is the country’s de facto national sport and remains a source of immense pride.

But new research within Thailand suggests that the earlier Muay Thai boxers begin, the more prone they are to a range of injuries.

Lawmakers under the country’s military leaders have also drafted revamped legislation that would bar children under 12 from competing in the contact sport.

The push has gathered new momentum in light of the death of 13-year-old Anucha Tasako, who died from a brain haemorrhage after his similarly aged opponent struck him with multiple blows to the head at a Saturday charity fight near Bangkok.

Anger erupted on social media where footage of the critical moments of the bout was uploaded.

Deputy prime minister Prawit Wongsuwan instructed the sports ministry to review the legislation, which also requires parental consent for those between 12 and 15 and “physical safety measures”.

“The competitions must have appropriate, protective gear from the arena manager,” Prawit said according to a spokesperson.

- Brain cell damage It is common for Muay Thai fighters to start young and Anucha embarked on his career when he was eight years old.

He grew up in the northeastern province of Kalasin and after his parents parted ways he spent time with a relative who had a Muay Thai gym.

Gripped by the sport, Anucha moved to Bangkok to stay with an uncle and train.

By the time he got to the charity match in Samut Prakan on Saturday he had fought 170 times, according to local media reports.

Critics point to alleged child exploitation as gamblers bet on bouts or promoters shave off prize money.

But it is the unseen health consequences that have received the most attention.

A five-year study from 2012 by the Child Safety Promotion and Injury Prevention Center at Ramathibodi Hospital carried out MRI scans on the brains of 335 child boxers and compared them with 252 non-boxers of the same ages.

Hospital director Adisak Plitponkarnpim said it was “clear” that child boxers suffered more brain cell damage and ruptures, and also had lower IQs. “Their young age increases the damage because their skull and muscles are not yet fully developed.”

He said that accumulative injuries could put them at higher risk for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases as adults. (afp)

LOS ANGELES - LeBron James poured on 44 points to leapfrog Wilt Chamberlain on the NBA’s all-time scoring rankings on Wednesday as the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Portland Trail Blazers 126-117.

James’ highest points haul since joining the Lakers saw him vault over Chamberlain into fifth place on the scoring rankings, leaving him with 31,425 points from his career.

The disease has already caused a spike in pork prices in China since first emerging in August, and fuelled growing fears of a major impact on the world’s largest pig producer.

“The African swine fever prevention and control situation is very serious,” said a joint statement by the ministries of agriculture, transport, and public security that was posted late Wednesday. “The epidemic has appeared in 17 provinces, spreading to large pig-farming provinces in southern China.”

In early September government-controlled media said African swine fever had been discovered in just five provinces, with the agriculture ministry saying at the time that the virus was “generally under control.”

The three ministries called for strengthened supervision of the transport of live pigs to prevent the disease spreading further.

China reported its first case in August in northeast-

ern Liaoning province.

Since then, the disease has steadily moved south into major pork-producing provinces despite efforts to contain it, including by culling tens of thousands of pigs.

The ministries blamed the spread on the flouting of restrictions imposed on moving pigs out of affected areas.

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) warned in August that the disease could spread to other parts of Asia.

African swine fever is not harmful to humans but causes deadly haemorrhagic fever in domesticated pigs and wild boar. With no antidote or vaccine, the only known control method is to cull animals.

Around half of the world’s pigs are raised in China, and Chinese are the planet’s biggest per capita consumers of pork, according to the FAO. (afp)

Rohingya crisis besieges Suu Kyi at Singapore summit

SINGAPORE - Diplomatic niceties have been in short supply for Aung San Suu Kyi at a summit in Singapore, where the one-time rights champion has been publicly chastised over her handling of the Rohingya crisis, compounding a dismal week for Myanmar’s de facto leader.

Suu Kyi has refused to speak up for the Rohingya, a stateless, persecuted Muslim minority driven by violence into Bangladesh in huge numbers.

Her reticence on the issue has cut her adrift from the global rights community including the United Nations, whose investigators say last year’s Myanmar army campaign amounted to genocide.

Many of the honours previously showered upon Suu Kyi for her stoic, peaceful resistance during

years of house arrest by Myanmar’s junta have been rescinded.

This week the bad news got worse.

On Monday Amnesty International, whose campaign to free Suu Kyi galvanised global recognition of her democracy struggle, stripped her of its highest honour over her “indifference” to the atrocities against the Rohingya.

One day later at a regional summit in Singapore, criticism replaced the garlands she has received on the global stage since steering her party into government in 2016.

Suu Kyi was castigated by Malaysia’s premier Mahathir Mohamad at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) meet, a forum better known for platitudes than admonishments.

Boeing didn’t tell airline pilots about features of a new flight-control system in its 737 MAX that reportedly is a focus of the investigation into last month’s deadly crash in Indonesia, according to pilots who fly the jet in the U.S. Pilots say they were not trained in new features of an anti-stall system in the aircraft that differ from previous models of the popular 737.

The automated system is designed to help pilots avoid raising the plane’s nose too high, which can cause the plane to stall, or lose the aerodynamic lift needed to keep flying. The system automatically pushes the nose of the plane down.

But if that nose-down command is triggered by faulty sensor readings — as suspected in the Lion Air crash — pilots can struggle to control the plane, which can go into a dive and perhaps crash, according to a Boeing safety bulletin and safety regulators.

The bulletin included new details on how to stop a runaway series of events from leading to a crash, pilots say.

“It is something we did not have before in any of our training. It wasn’t in our books. American didn’t have it,” said Dennis Tajer, a 737 pilot and spokesman for the pilots union at American Airlines. “Now I have to wonder what else is there?”

Jon Weaks, a 737 captain and president of the pilots union at Southwest, said he couldn’t recall a similar omission in a Boeing operating manual.

“I was not pleased. How could something like this happen? We want to be given the information to keep our pilots, our passengers and our families safe,” he said.

Weaks said he is satisfied that “we have been given, finally, the correct information.”

The MAX is the newest version of the twin-engine Boeing 737. More than 200 have been delivered to airlines worldwide, including American, Southwest and United.

Boeing Chairman and CEO Dennis Muilenburg said Tuesday that the Chicago-based company remains confident the MAX is a safe airplane. He said Boeing did not withhold operating details from airlines and flight crews.

“We ensure that we provide all of the information that is needed to safely fly our airplanes,” Muilenburg told Fox Business Network. He said Boeing bulletins to airlines and pilots “point them back to existing flight procedures” to handle the kind of sensor problem suspected in last month’s crash.

A Southwest spokeswoman said the new automated maneuvering system was not included in the operating manual for MAX models. An American spokesman said the airline was unaware of some new automated functions in the MAX but hasn’t experienced nose-direction errors. A United spokesman said Boeing and the FAA do not believe additional pilot training is needed.

The Federal Aviation Administration issued an emergency directive last week to airlines, telling them to update cockpit manuals to include instructions

for how pilots can adjust flight controls under certain conditions.

“The FAA will take further action if findings from the accident investigation warrant,” the agency said in a statement Tuesday.

On Oct. 29, Lion Air Flight 610 plunged into the Java Sea shortly after takeoff from Jakarta. All 189 people on board were killed.

John Cox, a former 737 pilot and now a safety consultant to airlines, said Boeing’s steps since the crash “have been exactly correct. They have increased pilot awareness, they have reminded them of the proper procedure to disable (the automatic nose-down action), which stops the problem.”

Indonesian investigators say that the Lion Air Boeing 737 MAX 8 experienced malfunctions with sensors that indicate the angle of the nose on four recent flights, including the fatal one.

The Wall Street Journal reported that U.S. and Indonesian investigators are increasingly focusing on the way that the plane’s automated control systems interact. They are also questioning whether the FAA and Boeing adequately analyzed potential hazards if the systems malfunction and send faulty data to the plane’s computers, according to the newspaper.

Shares of Boeing Co. ended Tuesday down $7.52, or 2.1 percent, at $349.51 after falling to $342.04 earlier in the day. (ap)

UK inflation steady above Bank of England’s target

LONDON - Official figures show inflation in Britain held steady above the Bank of England’s target level in October.

The Office for National Statistics said

the consumer prices index in the year to October was unchanged at 2.4 percent — above the Bank’s target of 2 percent.

The Bank has raised its main interest rate on two occasions over the past year,

taking it to 0.75 percent, in order to rein in inflation stoked by the Brexit vote in June 2016. That triggered a sharp fall in the value of the pound and raised the cost of imports.

The Bank, though, is not expected to hike again until there’s clarity over Britain’s exit from the European Union. On Wednesday, Prime Minister Theresa May is briefing her Cabinet on a draft deal.

LONDON - Brexit is already having an impact on Britain’s labor market, with the number of people from the European Union working in the country falling by a record amount.

The Office for National Statistics said Tuesday the number of EU nationals working in Britain fell by 132,000 in the three months to September compared with the year before, to 2.25 million. That’s the largest annual fall since comparable records began in 1997.

Some decline would be expected given economic improvements elsewhere in the EU over the past couple of years. However, it appears that the vote to leave the EU in June 2016 has had an impact as well. Not only did it lead to a sharp fall in the pound, which made Britain a relatively less attractive proposition, it also created more

uncertainty about the future status of EU workers in Britain.

“The sharp fall in EU migrant workers over the last year shows that Britain’s labor market is already changing ahead of Brexit,” said Stephen Clarke, senior economic analyst at the Resolution Foundation.

EU nationals in Britain have lived in uncertainty about their future work rights since the Brexit vote, which was largely driven by concerns over immigration. One of the main tenets of EU membership is the freedom for citizens to move and work anywhere within the 28country bloc.

Discussions over Britain’s exit in March 2019 are still going on and there are doubts as to whether the British Parliament will back any deal Prime Minister Theresa May strikes. Though the government has sought to assuage concerns of EU citizens in Britain about their future, talk of Britain crashing out of the bloc without a deal on future relations is adding to uncertainty.

The departure of more EU nationals comes at a time when the U.K. labor market is doing well.

The number of people in work was up by 350,000 on the year to 32.41 million, with British nationals working up by 448,000 to 29 million. Overall, the unemployment rate is super-low at 4.1 percent despite a 0.1 percentage point rise

over the most recent period.

Wages are rising, too, with employers seemingly having to respond to scarce labor by giving workers more money. Average earnings over the three months to September, excluding bonuses, were 3.2 percent higher than the corresponding period a year earlier. That is the highest rate since a decade ago, before the global financial crisis pushed the economy into recession.

“We assure the nation that his aforementioned absence has nothing to do with his physical health and wellbeing which have been the subject of speculation,” he added.

The outspoken leader remains popular at home even as he pursues a deadly drug war that has seen thousands killed and horrified western allies.

But he has regularly prompted theorising about his health by skipping events or discussing his ailments in public since taking power in 2016.

Duterte has said previously that he suffers from daily migraines and ailments including Buerger’s disease, an illness that affects the veins and the arteries of the limbs, and is usually due to smoking.

Despite his deadly crackdown on drugs, he also revealed in 2016 that he used to take fentanyl, a powerful opiate painkiller, because of a spinal injury from previous motorcycle accidents.

PORT MORESBY - If you are travelling to Papua New Guinea, you don’t need to pack a phrasebook, you need to bring an entire library. With 841 living tongues and a colourful creole lingua franca, this Pacific nation is the undisputed world champion of linguistic diversity.

From Pii in the mist-cloaked highlands to Toaripi on the shores of the gleaming Coral Sea, Papua New Guinea is a linguist’s paradise with one in 10 of the world’s languages found here.

The number of speakers of individual languages can range from a handful of people in the jungle -- not much more than an extended family -- to millions spread across provinces and terrains.

Experts point to the country’s relatively weak central government, deep valleys, almost impenetrable vegetation and roughly 600 islands to explain why a country of eight million people and smaller than Spain has such a bounty of languages, when 46 million Spaniards -- for all practical purposes -- make do with a dozen or so.

Many of these diverse tongues have developed undisturbed over tens of thousands of years, making Papua New Guinea something of a linguistic Galapagos.

To get by day-to-day, Papua New Guineans typically speak

three to five languages, and understand many more dialects.

But ironically they can sometimes struggle to render a simple sentence in one language into their mother tongue -- particularly when discussing numbers over 10 or when rural-based languages are deployed to describe life in the big city. When asked to say “there are more than 800 languages in Papua New Guinea” in Vula’a -- which has a couple of thousand speakers in the central province -- Port Moresby office worker Sonia Pegi has to call her dad just to make sure she has it right.

- ‘Pidgin English’ The country’s most widely spoken language is pidgin English or Tok Pisin, although this being Papua New Guinea, Tok Pisin only claimed its lingua franca status after beating out a pretender in the form of semi-creole Austronesian language Hiri Motu.

Tok Pisin, Hiri Motu and English are the country’s three official languages.

“Tok Pisin is derived 80-85 percent from English,” said Jenny Homerang who is starting a pidgin language course at the Australian National University in Canberra.

“But you also have bits of German and bits of Portuguese.”

In fact, Tok Pisin is something of a linguistic sponge, soaking up words from languages as distant as Taiwanese and Zulu, which dominates the southeastern corner of Africa. Suspected sorcerers -- who in Papua New Guinea can often be the victims of extreme violence -- are referred to as “sangoma”, a word familiar to anyone living in Johannesburg or Durban.

Tok Pisin is also a deeply expressive language: you can ‘bagarap’ your car in an accident, or relieve yourself in the ‘sithaus’.

But sometimes things get lost in translation. ‘Ol’ means ‘they’, not ‘all’, which can confuse a first-time visitor.

Greek silk road town finds itself back in fashion

SOUFLI - Inside the machinecrammed Mouhtarides factory near the Greek-Turkish border, Ioanna Pistola deftly spins a silk thread in a loom, ignoring the deafening noise around her.

“I’ve been working in this hall for 20 years,” the middle-aged weaver shouts above the din.

The dormant, isolated town of Soufli has been a key centre for Greek silk production since the 19th century.

This was also the first area in Europe to rear silkworms after they were smuggled by Byzantine monks out of India in the 6th century AD. Silk, much of it homemade, has sustained the town of around 4,000 inhabitants for decades, although the number of factories has fallen.

Now though, say the town’s last two active producers, silk is again de rigueur on the world’s most prestigious catwalks, and demand from designers for the luxurious fabric is on the up.

“Penetrate into the world of fashion, this is what Soufli is trying to do... there is no haute couture without silk nowadays,” says Yiorgos Tsiakiris, owner of the factory that bears his name.

“The area’s great advantage is its long experience (with sericulture)... This is where silk was

first produced in Europe... we should exploit this advantage,” he adds.

His production site is not far from the Mouhtarides factory, where marketing manager Despina Bakarou also talks of concerted action to make the most of current trends.

“Silk is making a comeback.

Fashion designers are asking for it. We are trying to maximise the quantity and quality of our production,” she says.

- Drawing on experience -

Silk has played a role in the family history of practically everyone who originates from Soufli.

“Every family grew silk,” says Matina Lekka, a local pensioner, whose mother worked at the Givre factory before it closed in the 1960s.

In its heyday, the factory, founded by two Jewish brothers, Bohor and Eliezer Givre, exported silk as far as the French cities of Lyon and

Bordeaux.

But after World War II, textile makers turned to cheaper synthetic materials such as nylon, and the area’s once-prided infrastructure fell into disuse.

A further blow came at the end of the 1990s, with the opening up of the silk market.

The town’s two factories currently export silk clothes and handicrafts to Bulgaria, Slovakia and Cyprus, and fulfil design orders from British stylists.

- China leaves an opening -

While the two factories produce a small amount of silk themselves,

most of what they use to make their items comes from China.

N o w, s a y s Tsiakiris, there is a real opportunity for European sericulture to bounce back amid China’s increasing industrialisation, which has led to a decline in its rurally-based silk production.

“There is great demand for silk. And there is a shortage... China in recent years has given up thousands of hectares of mulberry trees, and people are moving out of rural areas to the cities,” he said.

Soufli is surrounded by 300 hectares (741 acres) of mulberry trees -- the leaves of which are eaten by the silkworms --, providing an abundance of a raw material waiting for revival.

Each silkworm cocoon can yield a continuous silk strand of up to 2.5 kilometres (1.6 miles) long.

“There are also thousands of mulberry trees still in the area, it’s a basis to build on,” says Tsiakiris.

With enough trees, a reliable crop of silkworms can emerge in about three years, he notes.

“There are European investors standing by, ready to spend up to 20 million euros ($23 million) here,” he adds, declining to divulge names.

“There is major interest, these people are worried about the future of sericulture in China,” the factory owner tells AFP.

Moreover, in the amended Regional Budget 2018, a total of IDR 450 million is allocated for additional services in three sub-districts, namely SMPN 4 Pupuan, SMPN 3 Baturiti and SMPN 1 Kerambitan junior high school. Not only that, the Trans Serasi program is going to open the route targeting the Selemadeg and East Selemadeg subdistrict, but the government remains to face budgetary problems..

“This budgetary amendment is used for student transportation services worth IDR 450 million in the three sub-districts with the addition of the fleet,” said the Head of the Tabanan Transportation Agency, I Made Agus Harta Wiguna, on Wednesday (Nov. 14).

He added that so far the coverage of student transportation services has targeted seven sub-districts, while three sub-districts namely the Selemadeg, West Selemadeg and East Selemadeg subdistrict have not but remain in the development stage.

To cover three sub-districts namely Kerambitan, Pupuan and Baturiti in 2018, the additional fleet are attempted for respectively SMPN 4 Pupuan (8 units), SMPN 3 Baturiti (10 units) and SMPN 1 Kerambitan (11 units). “The fleet addition has been running since the beginning of November,” he said.

With the additional fleets at these three schools, the total student transportation service (Trans Serasi) in Tabanan district amounts to 177 fleets and reaches 15 schools, with the capacity of even more than 100 percent.

“Sometimes, we are still overwhelmed as well because the interested passengers continue to increase,” he said.

He added the progress for the additional services in East Selemadeg, the district government of Tabanan prepares 13 units for SMPN 2 East Selemadeg and five units for SMPN 1 Selemadeg. “For fleet procurement, we make cooperation with public transportation owned by residents. In this program, we always indeed empower local residents in the operation of the student transportation, so the public

transportation owned by citizens is not suspended,” he explained.

He emphasized that before budgeting for the purchase of services, the Transportation Agency also sees the commitment of the drivers first. Just a reminder, Trans Serasi is one of the district innovations to reduce the number of accidents and congestion in Tabanan. The Trans Serasi program is expected to be able to reduce congestion, accidents, delinquencies and abuse cases in Tabanan, especially those frequently occurred in children. (kmb28)

Tourism Fishing Festival 2018 held to introduce Kedonganan Beach

KEDONGANAN is a coastal village on the southern of Bali Island and very well known as fish-producing village. However, in the past ten years this region has developed into one of the tourist resorts getting remarkably popular for its seafood. Kedonganan village has two coasts with their respective attractions, namely Kedonganan Beach with white sand and sunset view in the west as well as the coast with beautiful mangrove forests in the east.

Kedonganan Beach sits about one kilometer west of Jalan Raya Uluwatu. As soon as seeing the row of fishing boats, it is the Kedonganan Beach. Geographically, Kedonganan Beach is included in the Kedonganan village area, South Kuta subdistrict, Badung. There, you can see fishermen activities like berthing on the white sandy

This annual event is organized

by the Kedonganan community featuring several activities to enliven the festival such as the cafe sanitation and decoration competition, the longest grill exhibition, a baleganjur dance competition, lawar making and seafood satay contest, Kedonganan special cooking contest, sand statue competition, netting competitions, parade of kites creations and several activities involving local communities and tourism entrepreneurs such as hotels, restaurants, travel agencies and others as well as fishing businesses at the village.

MUMBAI - Bollywood superstars Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh have tied the knot in Italy, Indian media reported Thursday.

The celebrity couple got married in a private ceremony at Lake Como on Wednesday, according to the Press Trust of India news agency.

The pair have yet to comment or release pictures from the event which was closed to the media.

Padukone is arguably Indian cinema’s biggest female star currently, and she has also broken into Hollywood, starring in “xXx: Return of Xander Cage” opposite Vin Diesel.

Padukone, 32, and Singh 33, announced in a joint statement last month that their wedding would take place on November 14 and 15.

The couple reportedly started dating in 2013 but have kept details of their relationship largely out of the public eye.

Hindi film director Karan Johar, a friend of the couple, tweeted his congratulations.

“Such a stunning gorgeous and beautiful couple!!!! Nazar utar lo! (Keep the evil eye away) !! Badhai ho (Congratulations) !!! Love

you both!!! Here’s to a lifetime of love and joy!” he wrote on Wednesday.

The newlyweds have shared the silver screen together, including a controversial Bollywood epic earlier this year that sparked violent protests in northern India.

Padukone played a legendary Hindu queen and Singh a medieval Muslim ruler in the flick, which angered hardliners, some of whom burned down film sets and made threats towards the two stars.

GENEVA - A pearl and diamond pendant owned by Marie Antoinette before she was beheaded during the French Revolution sold for $36 million at an auction on Wednesday, shattering its pre-sale estimate of up to $2 million.

The Sotheby’s auction at an ultra-luxurious hotel on the banks of Lake Geneva saw feverish bidding for a 10-piece collection owned by the ill-fated queen, featuring jewels unseen in public for two centuries. The 10 items, which had been estimated to fetch a total of roughly $3 million, sold

for a combined sum of nearly $43 million, Sotheby’s said.

A diamond brooch pegged to go for roughly $80,000 (70,000 euros) sold for $1.75 million, excluding fees, one of several pieces that brought in more than 20 times its estimated worth.

But the highlight was the pendant featuring an oval diamond and drop-shaped pearl, which Sotheby’s said went to an anonymous, private buyer, without giving further details.

Sotheby’s also said the pendant set a new record price for a pearl

jewel sold at auction.

“Marie Antoinette’s pendant is simply irreplaceable and the price it fetched is about far more than the gem itself,” Eddie LeVian, the chief executive of jewellers Le Vian, said in a statement.

“It captures everyone’s imagination,” he added.

“This is the ultimate proof, if it were needed, that the world’s ultra high net worth individuals love rare, natural fancy coloured diamond and pearls jewels as investments, and especially those with royal provenance.” (afp)

British Prime Minister Theresa May suffered a huge blow on Thursday as Dominic Raab quit as her Brexit secretary over a proposed EU withdrawal agreement. May was preparing to start selling her Brexit deal to parliament, boosted by news that Europe is preparing a rapid summit to sign off on the agreement.

But the ground began to shift beneath her when Raab said he could not back the draft deal. “I cannot reconcile the terms of the proposed deal with the promises we made to the country in our manifesto,” he said.

“You deserve a Brexit secretary who can make the case for the deal you are pursuing with conviction.

“I must resign.” Raab, who had been in place since July, resigned less than an hour after Shailesh Vara quit as a junior Northern

Ireland minister over the draft accord.

The pound sterling lost nearly one percent of its value against the dollar following Raab’s resignation, wiping out gains since Tuesday as the draft agreement emerged. At 0900 GMT, the pound stood at around $1.2870, compared to $1.2992 at 2200 GMT on Wednesday.

May had secured her cabinet’s collective approval for the agreement during a five-hour meeting on

Wednesday, an important step that helped allay growing fears in the business community of a disorderly divorce.

She was due to set out the terms of the draft withdrawal agreement with the European Union to parliament’s lower House of Commons, which must approve the deal before Brexit day on March 29.

European Council President Donald Tusk said in Brussels that unless problems emerge as EU member states examine the deal,

he will host a summit to sign the accord in Brussels on November 25. May’s governing centre-right Conservative Party -- which does not command a Commons majority -- was already split between Brexiteers and those who wanted to remain in the union, and now many on both sides of that divide oppose her deal.

Raab had backed Britain leaving the EU in the 2016 referendum, while Vara wanted the UK to stay in the bloc.
