Bruno Mars leads music’s AMA nominations as female artists edged out LOS ANGELES - The men of pop and hip hop led the nominations for the American Music Awards (AMA) on Thursday, while female artists were left out of most categories. Bruno Mars led with eight nominations, including Artist of the Year, the top accolade of the night. He will face hip hop stars Drake and Kendrick Lamar, British singersongwriter Ed Sheeran and electropop DJ duo The Chainsmokers - each of whom landed five nominations - for the coveted award. The women of pop music failed to land nominations in categories such as Artist of the Year, Video of the Year and Tour of the Year. Pop star Halsey, one of the few female artists to land nominations for her collaboration with The Chainsmokers on the hit song “Closer,” tweeted on Thursday that she was “really disappointed” at the male-dominated nominees list. “so many incredible female artists have released this year. hoping the coming award shows give them the credit that is due to them,” she said. Desperate Puerto Ricans are drinking water from a hazardous-waste site

Puerto Rico - Jose Luis Rodriguez waited in line to fill plastic jugs in the back of his pickup truck with water for drinking, doing the dishes and bathing. But there is something about this water Rodriguez didn’t know: It was being pumped to him by water authorities from a federally designated hazardous-waste site, CNN learned after reviewing Superfund documents and interviewing federal and local officials. Rodriguez, 66, is so desperate for water that this news didn’t startle him. “I don’t have a choice,” he said. “This is the only option I have.” More than three weeks after Hurricane Maria ravaged this island, more than 35% of the island’s residents -- American citizens -- remain without safe drinking water. It’s clear some residents are turning to potentially risky sources to get by. Friday afternoon, CNN watched workers from the Puerto Rican water utility, Autoridad de Acueductos y Alcantarillados, or AAA, distribute water from a

well at the Dorado Groundwater Contamination Site, which was listed in 2016 as part of the federal Superfund program for hazardous waste cleanup. Residents like Rodriguez filled small bottles from a hose and piled them in their vehicles. Large trucks with cylindrical tanks on their backs carried the water to people elsewhere. Some of the trucks carried the name of the municipality of Dorado. Others simply were labeled with the words “Agua Potable,” Spanish for potable water. In announcing the addition of the

Dorado site to the Superfund program, the US Environmental Protection Agency says the area was polluted with industrial chemicals, including tetrachloroethylene and trichloroethylene, which “can have serious health impacts including damage to the liver and increasing the risk of cancer,” according to the EPA. It’s unclear whether there are public health risks from this particular well, however. The EPA said it plans to do testing in the area over the weekend. “The EPA is gathering more information about the quality of water from the wells associated with

our Dorado groundwater contamination site, as well as other Superfund sites in Puerto Rico,” the agency said in a statement issued to CNN on Friday. “While some of these wells are sometimes used to provide drinking water, the EPA is concerned that people could be drinking water that may be contaminated, depending on the well. We are mindful of the paramount job of protecting people’s health, balanced with people’s basic need for water.” Regional EPA spokesman Elias Rodriguez confirmed the location is part of a Superfund site. Autoridad de Acueductos y Alcantarillados, the water authority, was unaware that this well site was part of the Superfund program until CNN provided maps showing that this was the case, according to Luis

Melendez, sub-director for environmental compliance at the utility. Melendez maintained the water is fit for public consumption. The well was opened on an emergency basis and is not part of the regular drinking water supply, he said. Mount Agung eruption

Assumed as non-disaster, but a rare event AMLAPURA - The eruption of Mount Agung has threatened the sustainability of Bali tourism. Actually, there has not been an eruption, but the fear resulted in is very large. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has a tough task to straighten out this understanding. It then came up with the idea to create the notion that volcanic eruption is not a disaster. The viewpoint is changed where the eruption is considered as a rare and exciting event to see. It aims to suppress negative impacts occurred today in relation to the sustainability of tourism in Bali.

Deputy Prevention and Preparedness of the BNPB, Wisnu Widjaja, recently admitted to have being challenged to face the current situation in Bali. As is known, the pulse of Bali’s economy is tourism. Therefore, he claimed to continuously think hard and wanted to provide a breakthrough so that the understanding of society and tourism players is in line with the disaster mitigation measures of the BNPB that volcanic eruption is actually not a frightening incident. When else we can see volcanic eruption in person. This is we see as an opportunity to turn things around,” said Wisnu Widjaja. He asserted to have done a mapping of the safe and appropriate places for this plan. One of the recommendations is from Kubu waters. From the middle of the sea, Mount Agung looks very intact. He admitted to be confident if the eruption happens the position is very appropriate to immortalize the moment from that angle by utilizing several fast boats to get there. He has done digital trials. Results from this

angle, when immortalizing the eruption event, will result in extraordinary images. “So, this is also an opportunity for my photographer fellows. Simply see this as a rare moment that must be perpetuated, not feared so that must flock to escape. Actually, it is located in the safe zone,” he said. To make sure his plan, he is even ready to prepare a fast boat. Moreover, he is ready to try first if later on the eruption really happens. This is to ensure that volcanic eruptions will not be harmful as long as mitigation measures have been done properly. So far, the mitigation efforts have been done well enough to prevent casualties. Residents in the warning zone have been evacuated. The paths to the warning zones have been closed. In addition, his agency has made leaflets regarding the simple ways to face the impact of Mount Agung eruption, especially when facing the threat of volcanic ashes at home to the ways of doing self-evacuation safely as well

as the evacuation routes that can be utilized. Immediately, he would like to affirm and talk to ASITA Bali or travel agencies and other Bali tourism players to equally save Bali tourism. A similar understanding was also conveyed by the Head of the Center for Data and Information and Public Relations of the BNPB, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho on Saturday (Oct. 14). He said the apparatus continued to give understanding to community so as not to be afraid of Mount Agung. Sutopo asserted that every volcano will erupt within a certain period. But after the eruption it will bring in a great blessing. The land becomes fertile, agricultural productivity increases and it brings in abundant sand and rocks that can be mined and others. People should be familiar with and live harmony with volcano. When erupting, the community can temporarily evacuate. Foreign tourists often visit this market to buy souvenirs and be brought to their home country. “Morning Market becomes a favorite of foreign tourists for selling various Bali souvenirs at cheap prices,” said Nyoman Warti, a souvenir merchant. Chief of Gelulung customary village, Wayan Parwata, said the Gelulung Morning Market has about 600 kiosks, but not all of them are sold. This market has existed long time ago, not a part of the Sukawati art market. Originally, this market was pioneered by many handicraft merchants from various regions in Gianyar that wanted to

sell their products at Sukawati art market. They came early in the morning before the art market was opened. They sold haphazardly, so it looked chaotic and dirty. Seeing such conditions, the merchants in the art market complained and drove them away. The handicraft merchants were then moved to the west of the art market, precisely at the vacant land of Gelulung field around 1988. The handicraft merchants were then allowed to sell in the morning or before Sukawati art market opened. “The merchants at this art market buy handicraft to be resold in Sukawati Market, so they can not open until noon or may only sell if the art mar-

ket is closed,” said Parwata. After experiencing the development, it made cooperation with the government of Gianyar district in 1991, so there is a levy of 20 percent to the district government and 80 percent to Gelulung customary village. It is for market operating costs such as the development and improvement of the market. “The number of buyers currently declines compared to the previous years. Their learning process should never break even though in refugee camp,” she said. The book, she continued, also contains education on four pillars of nationality, national songs and motiva-

tion in order to be proud to be Indonesian children. “The contents are related to way how to keep the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia or NKRI,” she added. In the meantime, KMB in cooperation with the Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs, Bali Cooperative and SMEs Agency, Cooperative of Services, Semen Gresik Cooperative and Kodanua Saving and Loan Cooperative helped alleviate refugees’ burden by providing 900 gallons of drinking water assistance intended for refugees at command posts throughout Bali. The other assistance is 200 kilograms of LPG. In addition, the KMB handed over the donations of Bali Posts’ readers and BaliTV’s viewers and ngaben cremation funds for 23 priest of Besakih Temple totally amounting to IDR 11,500,000, 44 pecalang or customary security guard officers of Besakih customary village amounting to IDR 13.200,000 and 35 apparatuses of Besakih customary village valued at IDR 17,500,000. An economist from Udayana University, Prof. Dr. I Wayan Ramantha, said if inflation occurred in Bali in relation to the current condition of Mount Agung, firstly, it happens because the real basic needs of the community undergo price hike. Vegetables, for instance, also come from the area of Mount Agung and disrupted livestock productivity will make the price more expensive. “On that account, we should rely on the sources of basic needs from other regions,” he explained. The second influence affecting the inflation is psychological condition of society. With the experience of eruption in 1963, which lasted for a year, such experience will cause to think about basic needs and so forth for a year. As a result, people will think to stock basic needs and so on. The demand for goods especially basic needs will increase. “Prices will rise and so will the inflation,” he added. In addition, Bali’s economic growth will also get influenced. All the information spreading in the community, either in international community or the people of Bali must be addressed properly and wisely. “We cannot face it with panicky manner,” he said. The panic, according to him, will also cause an economic panic. “We should be able to provide cool information that the risks that probably occur have been anticipated or mitigated,” he said. With such an effort, if the Bali’s economic growth is not as high as the target expected, he was confident that it will not make Bali’s economy plummet. “Similarly, it also happens to inflation. ASITA and PHRI Bali have even reported the cancellation of a group of tourists originally scheduled to arrive this October. “So far, they (foreign tourists—Ed) have understanding that Mount Agung is in Denpasar, that’s what makes people afraid whereas it is far away,” he explained. A member of the Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) of the Bali House of Representatives, Ni Kadek Darmini, said that tourism players should be ready to cope with three things. They are reducing tourists that cancel their visit to Bali, the number of tourists going out from Bali, and creating a sense of comfort and safety for tourists remaining to stay in Bali. “Communication flow must be obtained from a reliable and valid source. Then, it should be able to be communicated in such a way that

does not give excited impression. It is important to pay attention that the economy in Bali is greatly supported by tourism sector,” he said. Division Head of Information and Media of Bali Tourism Hospitality (BTH), Dewa Gede Ngurah Byomantara, agreed that what absolutely needed this time is to convince tourists that Bali tourist destinations are mostly safe. Based on the mapping of BTH, only 2 percent of the tourist attractions are located in Karangasem. It means that 98 percent of tourist objects on the Island of the Gods are within a safe radius of the eruption. However, according to the results of coordination with the PHRI, there are about 15 to 20 percent of tourists that have canceled or postponed their travel to Bali this October. “I cannot believe this is the impact of Mount Agung, but probably this is the impact of Mount Agung,” he said. According to Byomantara, the main task of BTH is to increase information related to Mount Agung that has not erupted yet and Bali remains safe to be visited.

Besides, it also includes which objects are allowed and not allowed to be visited by tourists. Though for the time being tourists cannot do climbing activities on Mount Agung, there are other alternative climbing tours. “As alternative options, there are many mountains that can still

BEIJING - Wang Qin, 59, collects scrap at a demolished residential district on the outskirts of Beijing, working 15 hours a day and struggling on her own to pay for her granddaughter’s education. She worries that her own home, a small illegally constructed shack where she lives with her granddaughter and mentally ill husband, might also be bulldozed by local authorities. The family lives off the 1,500 yuan ($228) a month Wang makes selling scrap and receives no assistance from the Beijing government. As migrants from another province, they are not recognised as residents of the capital despite having lived there since 2014. Since she is not registered in Beijing, Wang has to pay more for things like school and medical care - a hardship for migrants in cities, where costs such as housing are also far higher than in the countryside. “Every month you still need to

live, I still need to pay the school fees for the child, and her food and drink every day,” said Wang, who came to Beijing to try escape the grinding poverty of her village in Henan province in central China. “I can’t take it, my whole body aches, I can’t earn the money.” Wang’s plight is a common one among millions of poor migrants in China’s big cities, as well as in the rural areas from which so many of them come, highlighting the challenges of the government’s campaign to wipe out extreme poverty by 2020. President Xi Jinping made the campaign one of his signature policy issues after pledging in 2015 that China would lift the 70 million people living under the poverty level at the time out of poverty

by 2020. The campaign has been ratcheted up as the Communist Party prepares to hold a twice-a-decade leadership meeting on Wednesday. “The country is placing an unprecedented amount of effort on alleviating poverty,” Liu Yongfu, head of the government’s Leading Group of Poverty Alleviation and Development, said at a news conference in Beijing on Tuesday. “President Xi Jinping is personally in command, and has visited all of the areas of concentrated poverty” in China. He added: “With the active participation of all parts of society, it can be said that the battle against poverty has achieved significant results.” Asked by Reuters about people like Wang, the scrap collector, Liu said migrants could receive benefits in their hometowns, noting that city dwellers were covered by urban social security programmes. AIN ISSA - U.S.-backed militias said they had launched their final assault on Syria’s Raqqa on Sunday after a convoy of Islamic State fighters left the city, leaving only a hardcore of jihadists to mount a last stand. “The battle will continue until the whole city is clean,” said a statement by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a U.S.-backed alliance of Kurdish and Arab militias. The SDF said earlier that a group of the jihadists had left in a convoy taking some civilians with them. But there were conflicting accounts as to whether the evacuees included both Syrian and foreign fighters. Raqqa’s fall to the SDF now looks imminent after four months of battle. “We still expect there to be difficult fighting,” said Colonel Ryan Dillon, spokesman for the U.S.-led international coalition backing the SDF in the war against Islamic State. Raqqa was the first big Syrian city to fall to Islamic State as it declared a “caliphate” and rampaged through Syria and Iraq in 2014, becoming an operations centre for attacks abroad and the stage for some of its darkest atrocities. But Islamic State has been in retreat for two years, losing swathes of territory in both countries and forced back into an ever-diminishing foothold along the Euphrates river valley. “Last night, the final batch of fighters (who had agreed to leave) left the city,” said Mostafa Bali, an SDF spokesman. Bali said only Syrian Islamic State fighters had evacuated in the

convoy. But Omar Alloush, an official in the Raqqa Civil Council formed under SDF auspices to oversee the city, said some foreign fighters had also departed. Neither said how many fighters had left or how many remained in the tiny, bomb-cratered patch of Raqqa still held by Islamic State. Before the convoy left, the coalition estimated that about 300-400 fighters remained. HUMAN SHIELDS The convoy would head to the remaining Islamic State territory in eastern Syria and included about 400 civilians along with the fighters, Alloush had said on Saturday. Bali described the civilians who left with Islamic State fighters in the convoy as human shields. The jihadists had refused to release them once they left the city as agreed, wanting to take them as far as their destination to guarantee their own safety, he said. Such withdrawals of fighters along with groups of civilians have grown commonplace in Syria’s six-year war, as a way for besieging forces to accelerate the fall of populated areas. In previous evacuations, including by Islamic State, the civilians usually included family members of the fighters. The agreement was brokered by the Raqqa Civil Council and tribal elders to “minimise civilian casualties”, the coalition said on Saturday. WASHINGTON - U.S. consumer prices recorded their biggest increase in eight months in September as gasoline prices soared in the wake of hurricane-related production disruptions at oil refineries in the Gulf Coast, but underlying inflation remained muted. The mixed report from the Labor Department on Friday comes as Federal Reserve officials have been engaged in a vigorous debate on the inflation path and suggests a December interest rate increase is not a done deal. Prices for U.S. Treasuries rose and stocks on Wall Street hit record highs. The dollar was little changed against a basket of currencies. Policymakers could, however, find solace in another report indicating that the economy was swiftly recovering from the damage inflicted by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, with a strong rebound in retail sales last month. “The firmness in retail sales should override the enduring mystery of low inflation to spur a December Fed rate hike,” said Sal Guatieri, a senior economist at BMO Capital Markets in Toronto. The Labor Department said its Consumer Price Index increased 0.5 percent last month after advancing 0.4 percent in August. The rise was the biggest since January and lifted the year-on-year gain in the CPI to 2.2 percent from 1.9 percent in August. Gasoline prices surged 13.1 percent last month, accounting for 75 percent of the increase in the CPI. The jump in gasoline prices was the largest since June 2009 and followed a 6.3 percent gain in August. The Labor Department said Harvey was reported to have impacted refinery capacity in the Gulf Coast and was likely a factor in last month’s increase in gasoline prices. Outside gasoline, price pressures were benign. Excluding the volatile food and energy components, consumer prices ticked up 0.1 percent as the increase in rental accommodation slowed and the cost of new motor vehicles, furniture and medical care declined. The so-called core CPI rose 0.2 percent in August. In the 12 months through September, the core CPI increased 1.7 percent. The yearon-year core CPI has now advanced by the same margin for five consecutive months. The Fed tracks the personal consumption expenditures price index excluding food and energy, which has consistently undershot the U.S. central bank’s 2 percent target for more than five years. Retail sales were also buoyed by a surge in receipts at service stations, which reflected higher gasoline prices. Last month’s increase in retail sales was the largest since March 2015. Excluding automobiles, gasoline, building materials and food services, retail sales increased 0.4 percent last month after being unchanged in August. These so-called core retail sales correspond most closely with

the consumer spending component of gross domestic product. The pick-up in core retail sales suggests the drag on the economy from the hurricanes will probably be modest. The growth outlook was boosted by another report from the Commerce Department showing inventories recorded their biggest gain in nine months in August. Economists estimate the storms could subtract at least six-tenths of a percentage point from third-quarter GDP growth. The economy grew at a 3.1 percent annualized rate in the April-June period. The Atlanta Fed raised its third-quarter GDP growth estimate by two-tenths of a percentage point to a 2.7 percent pace after the data. “The sudden increase in retail demand is likely to cause third-quarter growth to come in somewhat better than expected before the hurricanes hit,” said Joel Naroff, chief economist at Naroff Economic Advisors in Holland, Pennsylvania.(rtr)

Although Bratayasa often paints in acrylic, he has found himself increasingly drawn to the more ephemeral qualities of water colours as they allow the soul of nature to speak through him as he tries to visually translate the spirit of sacred places and objects into paintings. I just try to let the feeling i had come through when I paint, without thinking about how I am going to do that”. This emphasis on feeling is something that comes through these simple yet profound water colour paintings. Although the objects of his paintings (temple doorways, Balinese offerings, shadow puppet characters amongst other things) verges on the banal and have been reproduced by countless other painters, there appears in these works something extraordinary. Wavering between abstract expressionist and purely realist there is a subdued sharpness to these works. Allowing the subtler vibrations of his own feelings to be expressed in the spontaneous movement of his hand across the

paper, the vibration of his subjects is thus transmitted in a unique manner. Combining balanced compositions based on Bali’s centuries old artistic traditions, with the looser qualities of water colour itself along with Bratayasa’s fearless approach to uncertainty, we are given depictions of real and imagined spaces inviting us to feel into what it is that creates beauty, quite apart from form. As Bratayasa says ,what makes the objects of Balinese culture so beautiful is their intimate and inseparable relationship and respect for the natural world. This respect is expressed in ‘The soul of Nature”, in a refreshing manner reminding us that beauty is expressed when we allow the natural forces within us to speak rather than trying to speak for them. SANTA ROSA - Authorities hope weaker winds will help more than 10,000 firefighters battle the deadliest blazes in California history, which have killed at least 40 people and destroyed thousands of structures in one of the state’s worst natural disasters in years. Fast-moving fires spread by shifting winds forced thousands more to evacuate their homes on Saturday as the death toll over the week rose to 40, with hundreds missing. More than 10,000 firefighters supported by air tankers and helicopters battled 16 major wildfires in areas north of San Francisco that have consumed nearly 214,000 acres (86,000 hectares), or roughly 334 square miles (865 sq km) - an area larger than New York City. The 40 confirmed fatalities, including 22 in Sonoma County, make it California’s deadliest-ever fire event, surpassing the 29 deaths from the Griffith Park fire of 1933 in Los Angeles. With 235 people still missing on Saturday in Sonoma County alone and rubble from thousands of incinerated dwellings yet to be searched, authorities expect the death toll to climb. Some 100,000 people have been forced from their homes, including 3,000 on Saturday from the city of Santa Rosa, about 50 miles (80 km) north of San Francisco. The fires have damaged or destroyed about 5,700 structures, reducing homes and businesses to ash.

Some victims were asleep when flames engulfed their homes, while others had only minutes to flee. “This is truly one of the greatest tragedies that California has ever faced. The devastation is just unbelievable. It is a horror that no one could have imagined,” California Governor Jerry Brown said on a visit to a devastated city. Janis and Roberto Lucha joined people lining up at a Federal Emergency Management Agency office in Santa Rosa, seeking help after losing their home of 27 years in the city’s Coffey Park neighborhood, where most homes burned to the ground. Molly Kurland, 63, joined a packed community meeting at the Santa Rosa High School gymnasium. “Even for people who haven’t lost their house, the uncertainty and anxiety is tremendous,” she said. But there were heroic stories as well. Teen-aged twins woke their parents on Sunday night to find fire engulfing the landscape. The persistent alarms from Benjamin Lasker, 16, gave the family time to escape the conflagration with little more than the clothes on their backs. Benjamin and his twin sister, Natalie, went on to awaken another eight families in their Fountain Grove neighborhood in Santa Rosa, pounding on doors, yelling “Fire!” and shining lights in windows. “They asked permission to wake people up,” Howard Lasker told Reuters, adding “I gave it to them.” (rtr)

MOGADISHU - The death toll from twin bomb blasts that struck busy junctions in the heart of Somalia’s capital Mogadishu has jumped to 85, making it one of the deadliest attacks since an Islamist insurgency began in 2007. President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo declared three days of national mourning and called for donations of blood and funds to victims of Saturday’s attack. At least 100 others were wounded. Police said a truck bomb exploded outside a hotel in the K5 intersection that is lined with government offices, restaurants and kiosks, flattening several buildings and setting dozens of vehicles on fire. Two hours later, another blast struck the capital’s Medina district. “The number of dead has risen to 85. We know some 100 who were injured,” Mohamed Hussein, a police official, told Reuters, giving combined figures of casualties. He said the toll was likely to rise. Police previously said 22 people had died. On Sunday, police and emergency workers searched the rubble of destroyed buildings. They also recovered dozens of corpses the night before, most of which were charred beyond recognition. Hundreds of people came to the junction in search of missing family members and police cordoned off the area for security reasons. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, although the Islamist militant group al Shabaab, which is allied to al Qaeda, stages regular attacks in the capital and other parts of the country. The group is waging an insurgency against the U.N.-backed government and its African Union allies in a bid to topple the weak administration and impose its own strict interpretation of Islam. “We will push, very hard, in the near future that Java should build the renewables, as well as geothermal especially, as well as gas-fired power plants,” Jonan said, referring to gas power plants “at the well head.” The government has also revived plans to develop high voltage undersea power cables linking the islands of Sumatra, Java and Bali, he said. “So whenever Java needs the power, Sumatra can send it to Java and the other way around.” Indonesia is committed to a target to increase the renewable portion of the energy mix to 23 percent by 2025 from about 12 percent at present, and expects to reach 18 percent in the next three years, Jonan said.

However, the government will continue to prioritise price in deciding power sources, he added. “While I do understand that it’s not easy to compete with coal-fired power plants, especially with minemouth power plants, they do have to compete with gas power,” Jonan said, referring to “strict” power tariff negotiations. In the first nine months of this year, Indonesia signed a total of 1,023 megawatts of renewable energy contracts, about double the total amount signed in the three years before that, Jonan said. KUALA LUMPUR - Indonesia will propose a broad intelligence sharing initiative among members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to deal with the rising threat of radical Islamist militants, its defence minister said on Thursday. Unrest in the southern Philippines has unsettled neighbours Malaysia and Indonesia, as the three countries grapple with the possible rise of the Islamic State aided by local militants who have declared allegiance with the group. Indonesian Defence Minister Ryamizard Ryacuda said he would propose an “Our Eyes” initiative at

the ASEAN Defence Ministers Meeting (ADMM) in the Philippines this month. “Be it maritime, air or intelligence... we will fine-tune this when we have deliberations and discussions at the ADMM,” he told a news conference at the launch of air patrols between Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. The patrols are part of a multi-pronged initiative involving the three countries - which also includes maritime patrols and intelligence sharing - aimed at plugging porous borders around the Sulu Sea where militant groups aligned with the IS are active. In a white-knuckle battle in appalling conditions at the Twin Ring circuit, Dovizioso snatched the lead from championship leader Marquez in a dramatic last lap after the swashbuckling Spaniard made a rare mistake when rounding a corner. The Italian’s nerve-jangling win by 0.249 seconds trimmed the Honda rider ’s lead to 11 points with three races left in the season. Danilo Petrucci finished third on a non-works Ducati, his fourth podium for the season, while Maverick Vinales’ faint title hopes were all but extinguished after a disappointing ninth for Yamaha. Spaniard Vinales heads to Phillip Island in Australia 41 points adrift of three-times MotoGP champion Marquez, who improved to 244 points in the title race. The dogged Dovizioso was beaming, however, having completed a brilliant race from ninth on the grid and fended off the series’ most fearsome competitor. Defending champion Marquez looked to have it won after he burned past Dovizioso with three laps left but he gave up precious momentum on the final lap with a slide at turn eight. but crashing, Marquez did well to regain control but the error allowed Dovizioso enough ground to mount a final daring raid. “The rear tyre was completely gone,” Dovizioso said track-side after grabbing his fifth win of the season. “But he did a mistake so I was able to catch him and I did a perfect corner at turn 10.” Marquez all but brushed Dovizioso’s rear wheel as he attacked at the last corner but could find no way through. “It was an amazing race, I mean the two guys that are fighting for the championship are fighting to the last corner,” said Marquez without a trace of disappointment. “I did a few mistakes especially at turn eight, I lose a lot.” Suzuki savoured an encouraging weekend, with Andrew Iannone and Alex Rins finishing fourth and fifth respectively. Three-times MotoGP champion Jorge Lorenzo fought to the front briefly in the early laps but faded to sixth for Ducati, while Italian great Valentino Rossi’s forgettable weekend ended mid-race with a fall. HAWAII - German Patrick Lange produced a sizzling marathon run, charging to victory in a course record time while Swiss Daniela Ryf claimed a third successive victory in the women’s event at the triathlon Ironman World Championship in Hawaii on Saturday. Lange came off the 180-km bike leg more than nine minutes behind Canadian Lionel Sanders and still trailled by more than six minutes halfway through the 42.2-km run. But he turned on the afterburners to pass a shuffling Sanders less than five kilometres from home and looked amazingly fresh as he charged to victory. Lange grabbed a German flag from a spectator before breaking the tape in eight hours, one minute and 40 seconds in front of a cheer-

ing crowd in Kailua-Kona. He was more than two minutes faster than the record set by Australia’s Craig Alexander in 2011. “It’s everything I ever dreamed of. Oh my god, I cannot believe it,” Lange said. “I always, always, always since I was a child dreamed to have this crown.” Not that it was as easy as it looked. “From time to time you think someone is hitting with a baseball beneath your knees and you just want to drop out,” he said. “I had to fight so hard.” Sanders, who took up triathlon eight years ago in an effort to beat a drug problem, held on for second place, while Briton David McNamee finished third, with Sebastian Kienle in fourth.

Lange, 31, who finished third last year, continued Germany’s recent dominance of the event, with Jan Frodeno winning in 2015 and 2016, while Kienle won in 2014. Frodeno, who reached the second transition in fourth place, slowed to a walk shortly after starting the run. Ryf took the lead late in the bike leg and was never threatened during the run as she romped to an emphatic victory over Briton Lucy Charles in second place, nearly nine minutes behind. “It was the hardest I’ve ever had to fight for a win,” Ryf said after finishing in 8:50:47. “I felt really bad at the start of the bike, and I didn’t know what would come. The defeat meant that titleholders Juventus dropped five points behind leaders Napoli who won their eighth straight game by beating bitter rivals AS Roma 1-0 away with a Lorenzo Insigne goal, although last season’s runners-up hit the woodwork twice. Australia defeated Syria 2-1 in a nail-biting second leg of their Asia playoff last week at the same venue, keeping their hopes of a fourth consecutive World Cup appearance alive. Australia need to overcome Honduras, who booked their place in the intercontinental playoff by finishing fourth in the North, Central American and Caribbean qualifying, to secure a berth in the finals in Russia next year. The first leg of the playoff will be in Honduras on Nov. 10 but the time and venue have yet to be confirmed, Football Federation Australia said in a media release on Sunday.
