LOS ANGELES - “Suicide Squad” topped foreign box office charts for a second consecutive week.

The super villain adventure picked up $58.7 million from 15,600 screens across 62 territories, pushing its global gross to $465.4 million. That’s a big haul, but Warner Bros. spent lavishly on the film, shelling out $175 million to produce the movie and north of $100 million to market it. It needs to be one of the year’s biggest hits for the studio to turn a profit. To that end, the film is fighting bad reviews and poor word-of-mouth as it tries to keep bringing in crowds. It also has been denied an entry into China, depriving it of as much as $100 million in revenue from the world’s second biggest market for film. “Suicide Squad” opened in Argentina and Italy over the weekend, picking up $2.5 million and $2.2 million, respectively. Among holdover territories, the film nabbed $6.7 million in Brazil, $5.5 million in the United Kingdom, $4.4 million in Australia, $4.3 million in Mexico, and $4.3 million in Russia. Domestically, the film slid a painful 67% in its second weekend, earning $43.8 million. In second place, Illumination Entertainment and Universal’s “The Secret Life of Pets” racked up $40 million from 48 territories. The animated hit centers on what animals do while their masters are at work, and has made $592.6 million globally on a $75 million budget. It opened in first place in Japan this weekend with $10 million. After its second week of release in China, “The Secret Life of Pets” has generated $49.1 million. “Line Walker,” a Hong Kong-Chinese crime film, REUTERS/Andrew Kelly took third place, earning $26 million. SINGARAJA - Violence cases afflicted children in Buleleng are high. The cases are dominated by sexual abuse and so far they have occurred for six times. LOURDES — Catholic pilgrims from around the world, many sick or disabled, converged Monday at a shrine in the French town of Lourdes under exceptional security after recent extremist attacks. WASHINGTON - The Greenland shark, a big and slowmoving deep-ocean predator that prowls the frigid waters of the Arctic and North Atlantic, can claim the distinction of being the planet’s longest-living vertebrate, with a lifespan perhaps reaching about 400 years. Its extremely sluggish growth rate, about four-tenths of a inch (1 cm) per year, had already tipped off scientists that it lived a very long time, and research published on Thursday calculated the Greenland shark’s lifespan for the first time. Danish marine biologist Julius

Nielsen said radiocarbon dating that analyzed the shark’s eye lens found that the oldest of 28 sharks studied was likely about 392 years old, with 95 percent certainty of an age range between 272 and 512 years. Females astoundingly did not reach sexual maturation until they

were at least 134 years old, Nielsen said. The Greenland shark, up to about 18 feet (5.5 meters) long, is among the largest carnivorous sharks. Nielsen, a University of Copenhagen doctoral student who led the study published in the journal Science, said the findings should bring this shark much-deserved respect. “This species is completely overlooked, and only a few scientists in the world are working with

this species,” Nielsen said. “Our findings show that even though the uncertainty is great that they should be considered the oldest vertebrate animal in the world,” Nielsen added. Nielsen said the vertebrate with the longest-known lifespan until now was the bowhead whale, topping 200 years. Greenland sharks have a plump elongated body, round nose, relatively small dorsal fin, sandpaperlike skin and gray or blackish-

brown coloration. They are slow swimmers and are nearly blind, but are capable hunters, eating fish, marine mammals and carrion. They are known to be relatively abundant throughout the North Atlantic and Arctic, particularly from eastern Canada to western Russia. They occasionally are spotted by deep-sea robotic submarines at latitudes further south, such as in the Gulf of Mexico. They have been observed in depths down to 1.4 miles (2.2 km). (rtr)

MANGUPURA - Currently, the irrigation development in the Badung district no longer takes advantage of river stone, but the precast concrete. The product known as L-shaped precast concrete is claimed to have long durability up to 50 years. The Head of the Badung Highways and Irrigation Agency, I.B. Surya Suamba, said that the use of precast concrete replaces the river stone conventional installation method having many weaknesses. “The quality of material is assured and uniformed because it is made through manufacturing process,” said Surya Suamba, Sunday (Aug. 14). Other than quality of the material, he said the installation process can be carried out more quickly and does not need to close the irrigation channel, so as not to disturb the process of agricultural production. “In the fiscal year 2016, it is financed through the Badung regional budget and special allocation fund (DAK),” he said. He said that a number of irrigation channels have utilized the new method. The use of precast L-gutter has a total length of 8,199.8 meters and 1,569 meters of tunnel. The irrigation channels getting the project include the Subak Ketapang with the budget of IDR 1.2 billion more along 503 meters; Subak Mambal at Mambal village gets IDR 2.6 billion over along 986.23 meters; and Subak Pekandean Munduk Gaduh and Munduk Karang at Angantaka village gets IDR 724.1 million along 292 meters. Then, Subak Munduk Taman at Munduk Delod Sema gets the budget of IDR 751.4 million along 100 meters, Subak Batu Lantang with the budget of IDR 7.2 billion over for precast L-gutter along 150 meters and tunnel along 300 meters. gets the fund of IDR 1.6 billion for precast tunnel along 183 meters, Subak Pangsut Sari gets IDR 2.5 billion for precast tunnel along 125 meters and Subak Sandakan gets IDR 9.9 billion for precast tunnel along 961 meters. Subak Tungkub Lanyah gets IDR 2.4 billion over with the length of 450 meters; Subak Munggu, Subak Cemagi Let and Subak Cemagi Anyar get IDR 3.9 billion with the length of 300 meters. In the meantime, the subak organizations getting the fund sourcing from special allocation fund are the Subak Ulun Uma with the fund of IDR 1.8 billion along 175 meters, Subak Dukun for tertiary channel gets the budget IDR 1.3 billion along 100 meters, Subak Taman with the budget of IDR 775 million for tertiary channel along 50 meters, Subak Segempel gets IDR 1.1 billion for tertiary channel along approximately 84 meters, Subak Buangga and Subak Bergiding gets IDR 2.6 billion for tertiary channel along 504 meters. Then, irrigation channel rehabilitation project is given to Subak Cangi with the budget of IDR 1.9 billion for tertiary channel along 150 meters and the last rehabilitation is made at Subak Tirtayasa for tertiary channel with the budget of IDR 1.4 billion along 300 meters. “Gradually the irrigation channel remaining to use river stone structure will be replaced with this method. Suspected of containing bomb, black bag causes an uproar in Ubud

GIANYAR - Ubud residents were shaken by the finding of mysterious bag in the bushes located at the alley leading to the Babi Guling Ibu Oka Restaurant on Jalan Tegal Sari, Ubud, Sunday (Aug. 14). The finding of the black bag feared to contain bomb was subsequently reported to Ubud Police. Finally, the bomb squad of Bali Police Mobile Brigade was brought in to the location to handle the case. As the information compiled, the mysterious bag was first found by Tjokorda Dalem Gede Darma Wijaya, 28, on Sunday afternoon around 11:30. At that time, this man from Puri Saren Kangin Baleran, Ubud, found the bag in the bushes at the alley leading to the Babi Guling Ibu Oka Restaurant. The finding had been questioned to Gusti Ngurah Astina, a parking

attendant at the restaurant. Unfortunately, the 29-year old man did not know anything about it. Alarmed by the mysterious bag suspected of containing a bomb, the finding was eventually reported to police authority. when encountered at the scene said that after receiving the report he immediately made coordination with the Bali Police Mobile Brigade. “According to the SOP, the mysterious finding like this should be handled by mobile brigade because it has complete device, specifically the device used to deal with this kind of finding,” he said. Around 15:00, the bomb squad of the Bali Police Mobile Brigade arrived at the scene. By wearing a full anti-bomb uniform, two officers subsequently conducted an examination against the black backpack. After examined with a detector, the officers made sure if there are no explosive substances in the suspicious bag.

“After made sure there are no elements of bombs, the bag is not immediately opened, but secured in advance and then taken to the Ubud Police station,” said the police chief. When opened at the Ubud police station, in fact the bag only contained an umbrella, sunglasses, shorts, tissue, black lady waist bag, a mineral water, dolls, candy and a single sheet of Sanur map. So, provisionally the bag is alleged to belong to a traveler. The police chief stated there is no identity card of the bag owner found. “It just contains the belongings of the traveler. UK firms cautious on jobs, house prices down after Brexit vote

LONDON - British employers have turned more cautious about hiring and the price of homes for sale fell by the most since late 2015, according to surveys that added to signs the economy has stumbled since the Brexit referendum. But shoppers seem to have brushed off the shock of the June vote to leave the European Union, another survey showed, suggesting consumer spending will soften the hit. Many economists believe Britain is heading for a recession followed by years of slow growth because of uncertainty about its future trading relationship with the EU. Japan’s economy stalls in April-June, casts doubts on Abe’s policies

TOKYO - Japan’s economic growth ground to a halt in April-June as weak exports and shaky domestic demand prompted companies to cut spending, putting fresh pressure on premier Shinzo Abe to come up with policies that will produce more sustainable growth. The weak reading underscores the challenges policymakers face in ending two decades of crippling deflation, as an initial boost from Abe’s stimulus programmes, dubbed “Abenomics”, appears to be quickly fading. The world’s third-largest economy expanded by an annualised 0.2 percent in the second quarter, less than the 0.7 percent increase markets had expected and a sharp slowdown from a revised 2.0 percent increase in January-March, Cabinet Office data showed on Monday. “Overall it looks like the economy is stagnating. Consumer spending is weak, and the reason is low wage gains. There is a lot of uncertainty about overseas economies, and this is holding back capital expenditure,” said Norio Miyagawa, senior economist at Mizuho Securities. “The government has already announced a big stimulus package, so the next question is how the Bank of Japan will respond after its comprehensive policy review, which is sure to lead to a delay in its price target.”

HOUSING INVESTMENT BOOMS On a quarter-on-quarter basis, gross domestic product showed no growth in AprilJune, compared with market expectations for a 0.2 percent rise. Private consumption, which accounts for roughly 60 percent of GDP, rose 0.2 percent, slowing from a 0.7 percent increase in the previous quarter. Capital expenditure declined 0.4 percent after a 0.7 percent drop in the first quarter, suggesting that uncertainty over the global economic outlook and weak domestic markets are keeping firms from boosting spending. Overseas demand shaved 0.3 percentage point off GDP, subtracting from growth for the first time in four quarters and underscoring the pain that stubbornly weak global demand is inflicting on the export-reliant economy. “The breakdown of the data shows that gains in consumer spending lacked strength and exports fell a lot,” Finance Minister Taro Aso told reporters, adding the government will pursue structural reforms to address low potential growth.

In a glimmer of hope, housing investment jumped 5.0 percent, the fastest rise since 2011, due in part to the BOJ’s ultraloose monetary policy that has pushed down mortgage rates, a Cabinet Office official told reporters. Abe’s cabinet this month announced an economic package with 13.5 trillion yen ($133 billion) in fiscal measures, hoping it would help the economy deflect external headwinds and sustain a moderate recovery. But the plan will take time to pay dividends and sceptics say there is not enough new spending. The BOJ also expanded stimulus last month via a modest increase in purchases of risky assets, and it remains under pressure to do more in September, when it conducts a thorough assessment of the effects of its stimulus programme. With prices still sliding despite three years of massive asset buying, the Bank of Japan’s policy review could put up for debate its target for expanding base money, sources say, which could mark an overhaul of its existing policy framework. New Jakarta airport terminal flooded just days after opening

Mild earthquake jolts SW Maluku AMBON - An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter Scale jolted Southwest Maluku District, Maluku Province, on Sunday at 11:18 a.m. local time. Bank of indonesia scrutinizes payment systems to monitor drug transactions

JAKARTA - Bank of Indonesia has confirmed it will keep an eye on payment systems, along with their supporting institutions, to prevent the flow of funds originating from illegal drug transactions. “We call on all financial institutions to establish coordination in line with the efforts to eradicate drug abuse, while we conduct further studies centered around preventing various forms of drug transactions,” Bank of Indonesia Governor Agus Martowardojo stated after the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the National Drug Agency in Jakarta, Monday. As an initial step, the bank will require supporting industries, including banks and other financial service institutions, to play a more active role in reminding the public to not use illegal drugs. Martowardojo noted that financial and payment system companies need to implement the “Know Your Customer” principle, through which institutions can mitigate and protect payment systems from illegal drug transactions. “We urge the establishments to place warnings on their ATM machines, which will remind the users to not conduct transactions for illegal drugs. We will also supervise money changers to ensure that they too are implementing the Know Your Customer principle, as drug abuse is a major crime,” he reiterated. The banks governor affirmed that his office will intensify surveillance operations internally to cover all employees and institutions under the Central Bank to avoid drug abuse in the establishment. “This is the countrys priority effort, which is in line with the presidents stance that drug abuse is an extraordinary crime. Through this memorandum of understanding, we will hold discussions with the Drug Agency on eradication and prevention measures,” he remarked. The National Drug Agencys Chief Commissioner Budi Waseso lauded the Central Banks support in facing drug threats in Indonesia. “The banks role, as the supervisor of payment systems, is imperative, considering the high number of drug transactions carried out through banking systems,” he stated. The memorandum contains four forms of cooperation, one of them being the dissemination of information and campaigns to prevent the misuse and illegal circulation of drugs in the premises of the Bank of Indonesia. The second focuses on conducting drug tests on the employees of the Central Bank. The third form of cooperation encompasses enhancing the competency and capacity of human resources in order to prevent the misuse and circulation of illegal drugs and its precursors, along with the dissemination of information regarding the Central Bank through training programs conducted by each establishment. Lastly, it is the Bank of Indonesias role to function as an advocate for the anti-drugs movement. Turkish police search Istanbul courthouses, more officers detained

ISTANBUL - Turkish police raided offices at three Istanbul courthouses on Monday after detention warrants were issued for 173 judicial personnel as part of an investigation into last month’s failed coup attempt, the private Dogan news agency reported on Monday. More than 35,000 people have been detained, of whom 17,000 have been placed under formal arrest, and tens of thousands more suspended since the July 15 putsch, which authorities blame on U.S.based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen and his followers. President Tayyip Erdogan demands the United States extradite Gulen, and the purge is straining relations with Western allies who Turkish officials say appear more concerned by the crackdown than the failed coup that killed 240 people. Police were searching the offices of personnel facing detention at the

main Istanbul Palace of Justice in the Caglayan district and two other court houses on the European side of the city, Dogan said. The agency said police took some of those detained away from Caglayan for questioning at a police station. RIO DE JANEIRO - Armed robbers posing as police officers held a gun to the forehead of U.S. gold medallist swimmer Ryan Lochte in a taxi hold-up in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, feeding concern over safety at the first Olympic Games in South America. Lochte was returning to the Athletes’ Village from a party hosted by the French Games delegation, with swimming team mates Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger and Jimmy Feigen, when armed men carrying police badges pulled them over. The men told the swimmers to drop to the ground and demanded their money and belongings, Lochte said. When he refused, one of the men cocked a pistol and placed it against the swimmer’s head, and he then handed over his wallet. “While it is true that my teammates and I were the victims of a robbery early Sunday morning, what is most important is that we are safe and unharmed,” Lochte said in a statement. He said he was looking forward to returning to the United States and starting training with an eye to competing at the Tokyo Games in 2020. The incident stoked worries over the safety of competitors and visitors to Rio,

which has a long history of violent crime, though Brazil’s sports minister insisted that athletes who remained on the Olympic site had experienced no problems. “The security operation for these Games has been totally effective,” Leonardo Picciani told reporters. “No athlete has had problems in their place of residence, in training or in the Athletes’ Village.” Police are investigating the incident and trying to locate the taxi driver involved, police sources said. In addition to the swimmers, Swedish tourists were briefly abducted when they visited a slum, Portugal’s visiting education minister was robbed at knife point, bullets flew into the equestrian centre and a Games bus was attacked with stones. Lochte thanked his friends, family and fans for their support after the unsettling incident. “The guy pulled out his gun, he cocked it, put it to my forehead and he said, ‘Get down,’ and I put my hands up, I was like ‘whatever’,” he told NBC. “He took our money, he took my wallet - he left my cell phone, he left my credentials.” Lochte’s mother said the swimmer was unharmed but shaken. “I think they’re all shaken up. There

‘Phenomenal’ Ibrahimovic making immediate impact at United

MANCHESTER — Zlatan Ibrahimovic is garnering quite the fan club in the Manchester United canteen since his offseason move to Old Trafford. United’s youngsters — Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford among them — sit with the 34-year-old striker at meal times, looking to extract as much wisdom as they can from one of the superstars of world football. Ibrahimovic’s influence is also showing on the field at his new club. He joined after four hugely successful seasons with Paris SaintGermain. A goal from a bicycle kick four minutes into a friendly match in his first appearance in the famous red shirt. A late winner against Leicester in the Community Shield, the annual curtain-raiser for the English season at Wembley Stadium. And, on Sunday, a goal on his Premier League debut — a long-distance strike that garnished United’s 3-1 win at Bournemouth. It’s becoming increasingly clear why Jose Mourinho was intent on making the Swede a key part of his first year at England’s biggest club.

“Forget that he is 34,” Mourinho said. “The body and the mentality is not of 34. He is at the top of his qualities.” That’s something of a stretch — Ibrahimovic might have been at his best during spells in Italy with Inter and AC Milan and with PSG last season — but he is certainly going to be a valuable member of United’s squad if his start to the season is anything to go by. We have this neversay-die attitude and defensively we’re not going to give up much, teams are going to have to work to break us down,” Canada captain Christine Sinclair said following the victory over France in Sao Paulo. If Canada gets by No. 2 Germany for the second time in Brazil, the women will get a shot against either Sweden or Brazil in gold medal match in Rio de Janeiro on Friday. Advocaat abruptly quits assistant job with Dutch team

AMSTERDAM - Dick Advocaat has quit as the assistant to Netherlands head coach Danny Blind just months after agreeing to take on the role, the Dutch football association (KNVB) said on Monday. Former Netherlands manager Advocaat will be joining Fenerbahce in Turkey. His abrupt departure has elicited a cold response from the KNVB, Blind and Hans van Breukelen, the recently appointed technical director of Dutch football. A brief KNVB statement said Advocaat had “indicated he is going to work somewhere else” and the 68-year-old has since told Dutch NOS radio he is going to Turkey. “I am keen to work at such a big club in Turkey. At my age it is a fantastic challenge,” Advocaat said. “I am shocked and disappointed,” said Blind, who had asked the experienced Advocaat to help him

RIO DE JANEIRO - Armed robbers posing as police officers held a gun to the forehead of U.S. gold medallist swimmer Ryan Lochte in a taxi hold-up in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, feeding concern over safety at the first Olympic Games in South America. Lochte was returning to the Athletes’ Village from a party hosted by the French Games delegation, with swimming team mates Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger and Jimmy Feigen, when armed men carrying police badges pulled them over. The men told the swimmers to drop to the ground and demanded their money and belongings, Lochte said. When he refused, one of the men cocked a pistol and placed it against the swimmer’s head, and he then handed over his wallet. “While it is true that my teammates and I were the victims of a robbery early Sunday morning, what is most important is that we are safe and unharmed,” Lochte said in a statement. He said he was looking forward to returning to the United States and starting training with an eye to competing at the Tokyo Games in 2020. The incident stoked worries over the safety of competitors and visitors to Rio,

which has a long history of violent crime, though Brazil’s sports minister insisted that athletes who remained on the Olympic site had experienced no problems. “The security operation for these Games has been totally effective,” Leonardo Picciani told reporters. “No athlete has had problems in their place of residence, in training or in the Athletes’ Village.” Police are investigating the incident and trying to locate the taxi driver involved, police sources said. In addition to the swimmers, Swedish tourists were briefly abducted when they visited a slum, Portugal’s visiting education minister was robbed at knife point, bullets flew into the equestrian centre and a Games bus was attacked with stones. Lochte thanked his friends, family and fans for their support after the unsettling incident. “The guy pulled out his gun, he cocked it, put it to my forehead and he said, ‘Get down,’ and I put my hands up, I was like ‘whatever’,” he told NBC. “He took our money, he took my wallet - he left my cell phone, he left my credentials.” Lochte’s mother said the swimmer was unharmed but shaken. “I think they’re all shaken up. There

Turkish police search Istanbul courthouses, more officers detained

ISTANBUL - Turkish police raided offices at three Istanbul courthouses on Monday after detention warrants were issued for 173 judicial personnel as part of an investigation into last month’s failed coup attempt, the private Dogan news agency reported on Monday. More than 35,000 people have been detained, of whom 17,000 have been placed under formal arrest, and tens of thousands more suspended since the July 15 putsch, which authorities blame on U.S.based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen and his followers. President Tayyip Erdogan demands the United States extradite Gulen, and the purge is straining relations with Western allies who Turkish officials say appear more concerned by the crackdown than the failed coup that killed 240 people. Police were searching the offices of personnel facing detention at the

main Istanbul Palace of Justice in the Caglayan district and two other court houses on the European side of the city, Dogan said. The agency said police took some of those detained away from Caglayan for questioning at a police station. The homes of those being detained were also being searched, state-run Anadolu Agency reported. In the crackdown since the abortive coup, more than 76,000 civil servants, judges and security force members have been suspended and nearly 5,000 dismissed, Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said on Saturday.

Western officials are concerned the purge will impact stability in the NATO member and a key partner in their war on Islamic State in neighbouring Iraq and Syria. Turkish officials say they are confronting an internal threat. Amid the rising tension with the West, Turkey has sought to normalise relations with Russia, sparking fears that Erdogan and Russian President Vladimir Putin might use their rapprochement to exert pressure on Washington and the European Union and stir tensions within NATO. In keeping with Erdogan’s tough line on Gulen, Yildirim told local reporters there would be no compromise apart from “this chief terrorist coming to Turkey and being prosecuted,” according to Anadolu agency. Gunman sought in killing of New York Muslim cleric, associate

NEW YORK - New York City police searched on Sunday for a gunman who killed a Muslim cleric and his associate as they left prayers at a mosque in the borough of Queens on Saturday, a crime that sowed fear and sadness in their Bangladeshi community. A possible suspect had been detained and was being questioned, but has not been charged, NBC News reported early on Monday, citing unnamed sources. A police spokesman could not confirm the report. Police had yet to establish a motive and said there was no evidence the men were targeted because of their faith, but nothing was being ruled out. Residents demanded authorities treat the brazen daylight shooting as a hate crime. The gunman approached the men from behind and shot both in the head at close range about 1:50 p.m. (1750 GMT) in the Ozone Park neighborhood of Queens, one of the city’s five boroughs, police said in a statement. UK firms cautious on jobs, house prices down after Brexit vote

LONDON - British employers have turned more cautious about hiring and the price of homes for sale fell by the most since late 2015, according to surveys that added to signs the economy has stumbled since the Brexit referendum. But shoppers seem to have brushed off the shock of the June vote to leave the European Union, another survey showed, suggesting consumer spending will soften the hit. Many economists believe Britain is heading for a recession followed by years of slow growth because of uncertainty about its future trading relationship with the EU. Earlier this month, the Bank of England cut interest rates and took other measures to soften the impact of Brexit, which it believes will push up the unemployment rate sharply. One of Monday’s surveys showed the proportion of employers expecting to increase staffing over the next three months dropped from 40 percent before the vote to 36 percent after it. The CIPD, a human resources group, and staffing firm Adecco Group UK & Ireland, also said one in five employers expected to reduce investment in training and skills as a result of Brexit, which will push up the cost of imports because of the fall in the value of the pound. Seven percent planned to invest more. “While many businesses are treating the immediate post-Brexit period as ‘business as usual’ and hiring intentions overall still remain positive, there are signs that some organisations, particularly in the private sector, are preparing to batten down the hatches,” CIPD acting chief economist Ian Brinkley said. Also on Monday, property website Rightmove said asking prices of homes for sale in England and Wales fell in August by the most since November, as post-Brexit uncertainty added to the usual summer lull. The biggest drop was in London, where asking prices fell by 2.6 percent from July. But there were fresh signs that Britain’s consumers, who helped propel the economy between 2013 and this year, were taking the referendum result in their stride. The number of shoppers on high streets rose slightly in July compared with a year ago, retail data firm Springboard and the British Retail Consortium said. Japan’s economy stalls in April-June, casts doubts on Abe’s policies

TOKYO - Japan’s economic growth ground to a halt in April-June as weak exports and shaky domestic demand prompted companies to cut spending, putting fresh pressure on premier Shinzo Abe to come up with policies that will produce more sustainable growth. The weak reading underscores the challenges policymakers face in ending two decades of crippling deflation, as an initial boost from Abe’s stimulus programmes, dubbed “Abenomics”, appears to be quickly fading. The world’s third-largest economy expanded by an annualised 0.2 percent in the second quarter, less than the 0.7 percent increase markets had expected and a sharp slowdown from a revised 2.0 percent increase in January-March, Cabinet Office data showed on Monday. “Overall it looks like the economy is stagnating. Consumer spending is weak, and the reason is low wage gains. There is a lot of uncertainty about overseas economies, and this is holding back capital expenditure,” said Norio Miyagawa, senior economist at Mizuho Securities. “The government has already announced a big stimulus package, so the next question is how the Bank of Japan will respond after its comprehensive policy review, which is sure to lead to a delay in its price target.”

HOUSING INVESTMENT BOOMS On a quarter-on-quarter basis, gross domestic product showed no growth in AprilJune, compared with market expectations for a 0.2 percent rise. Private consumption, which accounts for roughly 60 percent of GDP, rose 0.2 percent, slowing from a 0.7 percent increase in the previous quarter. Capital expenditure declined 0.4 percent after a 0.7 percent drop in the first quarter, suggesting that uncertainty over the global economic outlook and weak domestic markets are keeping firms from boosting spending. Overseas demand shaved 0.3 percentage point off GDP, subtracting from growth for the first time in four quarters and underscoring the pain that stubbornly weak global demand is inflicting on the export-reliant economy. “The breakdown of the data shows that gains in consumer spending lacked strength and exports fell a lot,” Finance Minister Taro Aso told reporters, adding the government will pursue structural reforms to address low potential growth.

In a glimmer of hope, housing investment jumped 5.0 percent, the fastest rise since 2011, due in part to the BOJ’s ultraloose monetary policy that has pushed down mortgage rates, a Cabinet Office official told reporters. Abe’s cabinet this month announced an economic package with 13.5 trillion yen ($133 billion) in fiscal measures, hoping it would help the economy deflect external headwinds and sustain a moderate recovery. But the plan will take time to pay dividends and sceptics say there is not enough new spending. The BOJ also expanded stimulus last month via a modest increase in purchases of risky assets, and it remains under pressure to do more in September, when it conducts a thorough assessment of the effects of its stimulus programme. With prices still sliding despite three years of massive asset buying, the Bank of Japan’s policy review could put up for debate its target for expanding base money, sources say, which could mark an overhaul of its existing policy framework. New Jakarta airport terminal flooded just days after opening

JAKARTA — The operator of the Indonesian capital’s main airport has apologized to passengers for flooding at its brand new terminal after rains overcame drainage pipes and inundated the arrivals area on Sunday. The $560 million terminal opened last week to domestic flights by national carrier Garuda but has been plagued by complaints about its lack of readiness. The airport operator and government hope the new terminal, and a third runway that is under development, will relieve over-crowding at

Soekarno-Hatta airport and make Jakarta a rival to Singapore and Bangkok for international stopovers in Southeast Asia. PT Angkasa Pura II, the airport operator, said it brought the flooding under control within an hour and is investigating the cause. Local media said drains might have been clogged

by construction debris. The company plans for other airlines to gradually move their flights to the terminal and it plans to start refurbishing two old terminals, built in 1984 and 1992, later this year. Soekarno-Hatta airport will be able to handle 62 million passengers a year once the renovated terminals are fully operational again in early 2018. Mild earthquake jolts SW Maluku AMBON - An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter Scale jolted Southwest Maluku District, Maluku Province, on Sunday at 11:18 a.m. local time. The quakes epicenter was located at 6.40 degree southern latitude and 127.10 degree eastern longitude, at a depth of 10 km below sea level, and some 175 km northeast of Southwest Maluku District, according to information from the Ambon meteorology and geophysics office. Bank of indonesia scrutinizes payment systems to monitor drug transactions

JAKARTA - Bank of Indonesia has confirmed it will keep an eye on payment systems, along with their supporting institutions, to prevent the flow of funds originating from illegal drug transactions. “We call on all financial institutions to establish coordination in line with the efforts to eradicate drug abuse, while we conduct further studies centered around preventing various forms of drug transactions,” Bank of Indonesia Governor Agus Martowardojo stated after the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the National Drug Agency in Jakarta, Monday. As an initial step, the bank will require supporting industries, including banks and other financial service institutions, to play a more active role in reminding the public to not use illegal drugs. Martowardojo noted that financial and payment system companies need to implement the “Know Your Customer” principle, through which institutions can mitigate and protect payment systems from illegal drug transactions. “We urge the establishments to place warnings on their ATM machines, which will remind the users to not conduct transactions for illegal drugs. We will also supervise money changers to ensure that they too are implementing the Know Your Customer principle, as drug abuse is a major crime,” he reiterated. The banks governor affirmed that his office will intensify surveillance operations internally to cover all employees and institutions under the Central Bank to avoid drug abuse in the establishment. “This is the countrys priority effort, which is in line with the presidents stance that drug abuse is an extraordinary crime. Through this memorandum of understanding, we will hold discussions with the Drug Agency on eradication and prevention measures,” he remarked. The National Drug Agencys Chief Commissioner Budi Waseso lauded the Central Banks support in facing drug threats in Indonesia. “The banks role, as the supervisor of payment systems, is imperative, considering the high number of drug transactions carried out through banking systems,” he stated. The memorandum contains four forms of cooperation, one of them being the dissemination of information and campaigns to prevent the misuse and illegal circulation of drugs in the premises of the Bank of Indonesia. The second focuses on conducting drug tests on the employees of the Central Bank. The third form of cooperation encompasses enhancing the competency and capacity of human resources in order to prevent the misuse and circulation of illegal drugs and its precursors, along with the dissemination of information regarding the Central Bank through training programs conducted by each establishment. Lastly, it is the Bank of Indonesias role to function as an advocate for the anti-drugs movement. The banks cooperation with the National Drug Agency is hoped to contribute significantly towards handling the threat of illegal drugs in the country.(ap)

South Korea expresses regret as Japan leaders pay tribute to wartime shrine

Suspected of containing bomb, black bag causes an uproar in Ubud

GIANYAR - Ubud residents were shaken by the finding of mysterious bag in the bushes located at the alley leading to the Babi Guling Ibu Oka Restaurant on Jalan Tegal Sari, Ubud, Sunday (Aug. 14). The finding of the black bag feared to contain bomb was subsequently reported to Ubud Police. Finally, the bomb squad of Bali Police Mobile Brigade was brought in to the location to handle the case. As the information compiled, the mysterious bag was first found by Tjokorda Dalem Gede Darma Wijaya, 28, on Sunday afternoon around 11:30. At that time, this man from Puri Saren Kangin Baleran, Ubud, found the bag in the bushes at the alley leading to the Babi Guling Ibu Oka Restaurant. The finding had been questioned to Gusti Ngurah Astina, a parking

attendant at the restaurant. Unfortunately, the 29-year old man did not know anything about it. Alarmed by the mysterious bag suspected of containing a bomb, the finding was eventually reported to police authority. Ubud Police officer receiving the report immediately secured the scene by installing a police line. Chief of Gianyar Police, Waluya,

when encountered at the scene said that after receiving the report he immediately made coordination with the Bali Police Mobile Brigade. “According to the SOP, the mysterious finding like this should be handled by mobile brigade because it has complete device, specifically the device used to deal with this kind of finding,” he said. Around 15:00, the bomb squad of the Bali Police Mobile Brigade arrived at the scene. By wearing a full anti-bomb uniform, two officers subsequently conducted an examination against the black backpack. After examined with a detector, the officers made sure if there are no explosive substances in the suspicious bag.

“After made sure there are no elements of bombs, the bag is not immediately opened, but secured in advance and then taken to the Ubud Police station,” said the police chief. When opened at the Ubud police station, in fact the bag only contained an umbrella, sunglasses, shorts, tissue, black lady waist bag, a mineral water, dolls, candy and a single sheet of Sanur map. So, provisionally the bag is alleged to belong to a traveler. The police chief stated there is no identity card of the bag owner found. “It just contains the belongings of the traveler. No identity card is found. Now, we are still checking the report on lost bags,” he said. (kmb35)

WASHINGTON - The Greenland shark, a big and slowmoving deep-ocean predator that prowls the frigid waters of the Arctic and North Atlantic, can claim the distinction of being the planet’s longest-living vertebrate, with a lifespan perhaps reaching about 400 years. Its extremely sluggish growth rate, about four-tenths of a inch (1 cm) per year, had already tipped off scientists that it lived a very long time, and research published on Thursday calculated the Greenland shark’s lifespan for the first time. Nielsen said radiocarbon dating that analyzed the shark’s eye lens found that the oldest of 28 sharks studied was likely about 392 years old, with 95 percent certainty of an age range between 272 and 512 years. Females astoundingly did not reach sexual maturation until they

were at least 134 years old, Nielsen said. The Greenland shark, up to about 18 feet (5.5 meters) long, is among the largest carnivorous sharks. Nielsen, a University of Copenhagen doctoral student who led the study published in the journal Science, said the findings should bring this shark much-deserved respect. “This species is completely overlooked, and only a few scientists in the world are working with

this species,” Nielsen said. “Our findings show that even though the uncertainty is great that they should be considered the oldest vertebrate animal in the world,” Nielsen added. Nielsen said the vertebrate with the longest-known lifespan until now was the bowhead whale, topping 200 years. Greenland sharks have a plump elongated body, round nose, relatively small dorsal fin, sandpaperlike skin and gray or blackish-

brown coloration. They are slow swimmers and are nearly blind, but are capable hunters, eating fish, marine mammals and carrion. They are known to be relatively abundant throughout the North Atlantic and Arctic, particularly from eastern Canada to western Russia. They occasionally are spotted by deep-sea robotic submarines at latitudes further south, such as in the Gulf of Mexico. They have been observed in depths down to 1.4 miles (2.2 km). (rtr)

MANGUPURA - Currently, the irrigation development in the Badung district no longer takes advantage of river stone, but the precast concrete. The product known as L-shaped precast concrete is claimed to have long durability up to 50 years. The Head of the Badung Highways and Irrigation Agency, I.B. Surya Suamba, said that the use of precast concrete replaces the river stone conventional installation method having many weaknesses. “The quality of material is assured and uniformed because it is made through manufacturing process,” said Surya Suamba, Sunday (Aug. 14). Other than quality of the material, he said the installation process can be carried out more quickly and does not need to close the irrigation channel, so as not to disturb the process of agricultural production. “In the fiscal year 2016, it is financed through the Badung regional budget and special allocation fund (DAK),” he said. He said that a number of irrigation channels have utilized the new method. The use of precast L-gutter has a total length of 8,199.8 meters and 1,569 meters of tunnel. The irrigation channels getting the project include the Subak Ketapang with the budget of IDR 1.2 billion more along 503 meters; Subak Mambal at Mambal village gets IDR 2.6 billion over along 986.23 meters; and Subak Pekandean Munduk Gaduh and Munduk Karang at Angantaka village gets IDR 724.1 million along 292 meters. Then, Subak Munduk Taman at Munduk Delod Sema gets the budget of IDR 751.4 million along 100 meters, Subak Batu Lantang with the budget of IDR 7.2 billion over for precast L-gutter along 150 meters and tunnel along 300 meters. Subak Tungkub Lanyah gets IDR 2.4 billion over with the length of 450 meters; Subak Munggu, Subak Cemagi Let and Subak Cemagi Anyar get IDR 3.9 billion with the length of 300 meters. In the meantime, the subak organizations getting the fund sourcing from special allocation fund are the Subak Ulun Uma with the fund of IDR 1.8 billion along 175 meters, Subak Dukun for tertiary channel gets the budget IDR 1.3 billion along 100 meters, Subak Taman with the budget of IDR 775 million for tertiary channel along 50 meters, Subak Segempel gets IDR 1.1 billion for tertiary channel along approximately 84 meters, Subak Buangga and Subak Bergiding gets IDR 2.6 billion for tertiary channel along 504 meters. Then, irrigation channel rehabilitation project is given to Subak Cangi with the budget of IDR 1.9 billion for tertiary channel along 150 meters and the last rehabilitation is made at Subak Tirtayasa for tertiary channel with the budget of IDR 1.4 billion along 300 meters. “Gradually the irrigation channel remaining to use river stone structure will be replaced with this method. Little is known about the spiders, which are native to the Montserrat island in the Caribbean. SINGARAJA - Violence cases afflicted children in Buleleng are high. The cases are dominated by sexual abuse and so far they have occurred for six times. In addition, the case of child neglect is also quite high in the region. Of the few emerging cases, the main trigger of children becoming the victims of physical violence is the lack of attention given by family and the impact of development of information technology. Moreover, the perpetrators mostly come from the closest people to the victims’ environment. This was expressed by Chairman of the Quick Response Team for Child Protection of Indonesia (TRC-PAI), Ida Ayu Alit Rahmadewi, amid the dissemination to stop child abuse and health campaign at Sangket meeting hall, Sukasada village, Sunday (Aug. 14). This event also introduced the Sangket diaspora association (P2S) appointed to be the coordinator of the TRC-PAI Bali in Buleleng. The event was attended by hundreds of students and general public in the area of Sangket hamlet. Furthermore, Rahmadewi said that violence against children has become a serious problem requiring the participation of all parties to provide protection for children from physical and psychological harm. Moreover, lately the violence against children was committed in group by the perpetrators. Without prevention by increasing the awareness of parents and the nearest people in the family environment,

On that account, the TRC-PAI Bali established a coordinator in Buleleng to provide dissemination and sensitize the public role in supervising children so as not to become a victim. “Now, the perpetrators are no longer committing the abuse alone but in group so that it greatly threatens the safety of children. Of the cases occurred, the perpetrators are closest people. To prevent this from happening, the awareness is very much required to jointly supervise the behavior of children,” she said. On the other hand, Rahmadewi said that the TRC-PAI Bali is not only focused to sensitize the public so as to be concerned with the safety of children, but also to intensely provide assistance in the form of legal process and return the mental and psychological condition of the victims and perpetrators. In addition, her institution also intensively monitors the children having

been vaccinated. This deals with the circulation of fake vaccines in several regions in Indonesia. To that end, through this health campaign, the institution will observe the development of children having received the vaccine. “Thus, we perform health campaign by involving volunteers to monitor whether there is any impact on the fake vaccines. When finding the case, we will pass through the post we have opened at the TRCPAI Bali,” she said. In the meantime, Chairman of the P2S, Made Sumarma, said that the health campaign and dissemination on child abuse is the first measure after he was appointed the coordinator of the TRC-PAI Bali in Buleleng. In addition, the activity involving several communities at Sangket poses the concern of the P2S in the health and social field as well as help disadvantaged school children. LOS ANGELES - “Suicide Squad” topped foreign box office charts for a second consecutive week.

The super villain adventure picked up $58.7 million from 15,600 screens across 62 territories, pushing its global gross to $465.4 million. That’s a big haul, but Warner Bros. spent lavishly on the film, shelling out $175 million to produce the movie and north of $100 million to market it. It needs to be one of the year’s biggest hits for the studio to turn a profit. To that end, the film is fighting bad reviews and poor word-of-mouth as it tries to keep bringing in crowds. It also has been denied an entry into China, depriving it of as much as $100 million in revenue from the world’s second biggest market for film. “Suicide Squad” opened in Argentina and Italy over the weekend, picking up $2.5 million and $2.2 million, respectively. Among holdover territories, the film nabbed $6.7 million in Brazil, $5.5 million in the United Kingdom, $4.4 million in Australia, $4.3 million in Mexico, and $4.3 million in Russia. Domestically, the film slid a painful 67% in its second weekend, earning $43.8 million. In second place, Illumination Entertainment and Universal’s “The Secret Life of Pets” racked up $40 million from 48 territories. The animated hit centers on what animals do while their masters are at work, and has made $592.6 million globally on a $75 million budget. It opened in first place in Japan this weekend with $10 million. After its second week of release in China, “The Secret Life of Pets” has generated $49.1 million. “Line Walker,” a Hong Kong-Chinese crime film, REUTERS/Andrew Kelly took third place, earning $26 million. Dominated by sexual abuse

SINGARAJA - Violence cases afflicted children in Buleleng are high. The cases are dominated by sexual abuse and so far they have occurred for six times. In addition, the case of child neglect is also quite high in the region. Of the few emerging cases, the main trigger of children becoming the victims of physical violence is the lack of attention given by family and the impact of development of information technology. Moreover, the perpetrators mostly come from the closest people to the victims’ environment. This was expressed by Chairman of the Quick Response Team for Child Protection of Indonesia (TRCPAI), Ida Ayu Alit Rahmadewi, amid the dissemination to stop child abuse and health campaign at Sangket meeting hall, Sukasada village, Sunday (Aug. 14). This event also introduced the Sangket diaspora association (P2S) appointed to be the coordinator of the TRC-PAI Bali in Buleleng. The event was attended by hundreds of students and general public in the area of Sangket hamlet.

Under heavy security, Catholic pilgrims visit Lourdes shrine

LOURDES — Catholic pilgrims from around the world, many sick or disabled, converged Monday at a shrine in the French town of Lourdes under exceptional security after recent extremist attacks. Armed soldiers and police patrolled the train station, town center and inside the sanctuary at Lourdes, where a 19th-century village girl said she had visions of the Virgin Mary. The site in southern France near the Spanish border draws pilgrims of all kinds, some hoping for a cure from the famous spring water in the Lourdes grotto. As a helicopter circled overhead,

visitors bearing candles and banners streamed toward the grotto and the sprawling plaza of the basilica, apparently undeterred by new security restrictions or the recent attacks. Crowds began gathering at the sanctuary before dawn Monday for a series of outdoor Masses in multiple languages celebrating the Feast of the Assumption, when ac-
