Luc Besson’s studio discussing rescue with US fund Vine PARIS - French film-maker Luc Besson’s loss-making studio EuropaCorp said Sunday it was in talks with US investment fund Vine Alternative Investments, one of its creditors, for it to take a major stake to rescue it. The studio, confirming a report in the Journal du Dimanche newspaper, said in a statement it was speaking with Vine about “a possible equity participation”. It cautioned though that it “cannot give any guarantee that this operation will carry through”. According to the Journal du Dimanche, Besson -- the man behind movies such as “Leon: The Professional”, “The Fifth Element” and the action-packed “The Transporter” and “Taken” films -- preferred to see Vine take control of EuropaCorp rather than French film group Pathe. Representatives for Pathe and Vine were not contactable Sunday

by AFP. EuropaCorp, a 20-year-old studio, located in a northern Paris suburb, has run up losses over the past four years, particularly by failing to recoup its big production costs on a lavish 2017 sci-fi movie, “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets”, that was a box-office disappointment. EuropaCorp in May secured a six-month suspension of its debt repayments as it cast around for a rescuer. Its 2018-2019 financial year saw it rack up 110 million euros in debt, on top of the 82 million in the previous period. In 2016, China’s Fundamental Films injected 60 million euros in the studio, becoming its secondlargest shareholder. Besson’s latest film, a crime thriller titled “Anna” that he wrote and directed, opened last month to poor reviews but solid audience scores. (afp)

The latest installment in the blockbuster superhero franchise, which picks up where “Avengers: Endgame” left off, has earned an impressive $846.5 million worldwide. Retaining its number two spot was Disney/Pixar film “Toy Story 4,” which took in $20.7 million on its fourth weekend. The film again features the voices of Tom Hanks as cowboy doll Woody and Tim Allen as toy

astronaut Buzz Lightyear. Debuting in third place was alligator disaster thriller “Crawl,” about a father and daughter battling a pack of hungry gators after a hurricane hits their Florida hometown. It took in $12 million. In fourth position was another debut flick, “Stuber” -- a buddy comedy starring comedian Kumail Nanjiani and professional wrestler-turned-actor Dave Bautista (“Guardians of the Galaxy”).

The film, which earned less than stellar reviews, took in $8 million. “Yesterday,” the romantic comedy based on an odd premise -- what if a global blackout meant that a struggling musician was one of the only people on Earth to remember the Beatles? -- shifted from third to fifth place. The crowd-pleaser -- directed by Danny Boyle of “Trainspotting” and “Slumdog Millionaire” fame -- earned $6.75 million. (afp)

Residents leave their homes to find higher grounds following an earthquake in Ternate, North Maluku, Indonesia, Sunday, July 14, 2019. A strong, shallow earthquake struck eastern Indonesia on Sunday, damaging some homes and causing panicked residents to flee to temporary shelters. There were no immediate reports of casualties, and authorities said there was no threat of a tsunami.

Two die, thousands flee after 7.3 quake in Indonesia

At least two people have been found dead and thousands were forced from their homes after a major 7.3-magnitude earthquake hit the remote Maluku islands in eastern Indonesia, an official said Monday. The shallow quake struck about 165 kilometres (100 miles) south of the town of Ternate in North Maluku province on Sunday evening, according to the US Geological Survey. In the sparsely populated South Halmahera district, the closest area to the epicentre, around 160 houses collapsed or were damaged when

the earthquake struck. Two woman died after being hit by debris, officials said. The quake also forced traumatised residents to flee to the higher ground. “More than 2,000 people have been moved,” national disaster mitigation agency spokesman Agus Wibowo told a press conference

Monday. The evacuees are sheltering in several schools and government buildings. Local disaster agency official Ihsan Subur said most people were still traumatised and refused to return home for fear of another earthquake or a possible tsunami. Indonesia’s weather agency said at least 65 aftershocks have been recorded between the initial quake and Monday morning. Government officials have started to distribute food and other relief supplies for the evacuees. North

Maluku province was also hit by a 6.9-magnitude tremor last week but no extensive damage or casualties were reported. Indonesia experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its position on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where tectonic plates collide. Last year, a 7.5-magnitude quake and a subsequent tsunami in Palu on Sulawesi island killed more than 2,200 people, with another thousand declared missing. On December 26, 2004, a devastating 9.1-magnitude earthquake

struck off the coast of Sumatra and triggered a tsunami that killed 220,000 across the Indian Ocean region, including around 170,000 in Indonesia.
