LOS ANGELES - Scarlett Johansson has quit an upcoming movie role as a transgender criminal following an angry backlash against her casting, she revealed in an interview reported widely in US media on Friday.

Colombian singer Shakira, arrives at Beirut airport in the Lebanese capital with her children on July 12, 2018.
The actress was to have taken the lead part in “Rub and Tug,” the story of Dante “Tex” Gill, a massage parlor operator and pimp who became a major crime figure in the 1970s and 80s. Born Lois Jean Gill, he identified as male. “In light of recent ethical questions raised surrounding my casting as Dante Tex Gill, I have decided to respectfully withdraw my participation in the project,” the 33-year-old told Out Magazine. “Our cultural understanding of transgender people continues to advance, and I’ve learned a lot from the community since making my first statement about my casting and realize it was insensitive.” When Johansson’s casting was announced, she and the project were berated on social media for not handing someone from the community the opportunity, with trans actresses Trace Lysette and Jamie Clayton leading the charge. Johansson’s representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but have previously released a statement pointing out that Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto and Felicity Huffman have all made successes of transgender roles. “While I would have loved the opportunity to bring Dante’s story and transition to life, I understand why many feel he should be portrayed by a transgender person, and I am thankful that this casting debate, albeit controversial, has sparked a larger conversation about diversity and representation in film,” Johansson added. The actress cited figures from GLAAD -formerly the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation -- showing LGBTQ characters dropped 40 percent in 2017 from the previous year, with no trans characters in major studio releases. There was no immediate word on the effect of Johansson’s exit on the production schedule for “Rub and Tug.” (afp)
LEBANON - Colombian pop star Shakira on Friday visited the village in Lebanon where her paternal grandmother was born, an AFP journalist said. “Hello Tannourine, thank you, I am happy to be here!”, the 41-year-old singer said in Arabic during a visit under high security to the village of Tannourine in Lebanon’s mountainous north. Accompanied by local officials, Shakira visited a nature reserve that grows cedar trees -- Lebanon’s national emblem -- and planted two saplings. To mark the occasion, a small patch of the reserve was named “Shakira Mubarak” -- after one of the singer’s family names, Tannourine’s mayor Bahaa Harb said. On Friday evening, she will kick off the Cedars International Festival in Lebanon, a concert set to attract 13,000 people. This is Shakira’s third visit to the country. Her first visit came in 2003 and she returnec in 2011 for a concert. The artist is in Lebanon with her two sons. (afp)

A picture taken on July 13, 2018 shows an iceberg behind houses and buildings after it grounded outside the village of Innarsuit, an island settlement in the Avannaata municipality in northwestern Greenland.
Huge iceberg off Greenland sparks flooding fears
A massive iceberg drifting off Greenland has triggered fears of flooding if it breaks up, leading the authorities to evacuate a high-risk zone. The authorities have urged residents of the Innaarsuit island settlement with houses on a promontory to move away from the shore over fears that the 100-metre (over 300 feet) high iceberg, which was spotted on Thursday, could swamp the area. “We fear the iceberg could calve and send a flood towards the village,” Lina Davidsen, a security chief at the Greenland police, told Danish news agency Ritzau on
Friday. The settlement in northwestern Greenland has 169 inhabitants, but only those living closest to the iceberg have been evacuated, Ritzau reported. “The iceberg is still near the village and the police are now discussing what do to next,” Kunuk Frediksen, a police chief in the Danish autonomous territory, told AFP. Susanne K. Eliassen, a member
of the village council, told the local newspaper Sermitsiaq that it was not unusual for large icebergs to be seen close to Innaarsuit. “But this iceberg is the biggest we have seen... and there are cracks and holes that make us fear it can calve anytime,” she said, adding that the village’s power station and fuel tanks are close to the shore. “Nobody is staying unnecessarily close to the beach and all children have been told to stay in areas that are high up,” Eliassen added. The incident comes weeks after scientists at New York University
shot and released a video of a massive iceberg breaking free from a glacier in eastern Greenland in June. An expert warned that extreme iceberg events will become more frequent. “Iceberg production in Greenland has been increasing in the past 100 years as climate change has become stronger,” William Colgan, senior researcher at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland, told AFP. He said the rising number of icebergs are in turn “increasing the tsunami hazards” which occur when they break away from a gla-
cier and trigger a tidal wave. Last year, four people died and 11 were injured after an earthquake sparked a tsunami off another island settlement called Nuugaatsiaq, sending several houses crashing into the sea.
