Many efforts done y the investors to have a land in Bali and even they want the sea as their business property. The plan of reclamation of Benoa Bay with the disguise as the island to avoid tsunami is considered the effort to rule Bali’s economic and environment by investors cooperating with the rulers of the island.

According to the lecturer in Udayana University Prof. I Gusti Made Sutjaya, reclamation in the bay area will give more negative effect for Bali. It will cause a change in social and culture and also increasing the gap between the rich and the poor.

The investor will control the area and the Balinese only will get the rest because of the capital flight.

“Here, the government must be wise in handling this issue. The decision must not only base on the

benefit of some some people people but but must mustt benefit be for all of us,” he added. Prof.

Sutjaya also stated that the reclamation plan is still not decided yet.

However, after the letter got out to public, the government should have a certain solution for it.

“If there is a chaos in the mindset of the leaders in Bali then the plan must be postponed. There must be a certain decision on the issue by the executive and legislative. Both of them must do a flashback and see the matter again. Don’t force the issue because we live in a democracy country,” said the professor. (kmb29)

Bali News Lack of attention, Semarapura Market increasingly languishes Semarapura (Bali Post)—

Tall buildings in Semarapura Market, Klungkung, in fact do not necessarily make the local traders comfortable. Instead, the fate of one of the biggest markets in the Eastern Bali increasingly languishes. The facility established by the government is even abandoned. Hundreds of stalls in the second and third floors remain empty and the condition is progressively alarming.

As observation to the second floor of block B on Sunday (Jul 14), the stall doors rusted and collapsed as well as the connecting bridge of the blocks also seemed porous. Meanwhile, parts of the ceiling also collapsed and parts of the roof broke down to fall. So, when it rained, the water flooded the market floor. On the second floor occurred doorless and dirty stalls and they unavoidably resulted in vile impression. A jewel trader on the second floor, Mega, said on Sunday that the stalls were often used by residents to urinate so that it kindled stinging odor. “It has been given a warning sign on the wall of each stall (no urinating outside toilet except for dog—Ed), but no one cares,” said Mega.

She said the stalls had actually ever been occupied by traders, such as by the traders of clothes and oblation materials. Since the buyers were deserted, the traders then looked for another location on the first floor of the market, although they had to jostle. Aside from in block B, similar condition was also seen in block A, C, D, E and

F on the second and third floor that were redundant and damaged as not being utilized by traders. Mega added that such condition had occurred for a dozen years since the Semarapura Market was completed during the administration of Regent Ida Bagus Oka. Until the end of the administration of the recent Klungkung Regent, there had been no significant policies to restore the market condition pursuant to its history as the largest market in Eastern Bali. Will the next regent be able to revive the Semarapura Market?

Used as immoral hangout A number of traders in the market continued to complain about the condition of Semarapura Market. In addition, the traders also had a rally, but there had been no significant policies to take advantage of the hundreds of empty stalls. One of the traders, AA Made Sudiawan, said on Sunday that the government should be responsive to any problems occurring in the field.

Sudiawan also criticized the Klungkung executive and legislative frequently held an outside working visiting, but they never resolved the problems at home. In the Semarapura Market, for instance, the traders had long complained about the condition of hundreds of redundant stalls, but there had been no meaningful action taken by local government. “Rather than working visit to outside the region without obvious results, the government or the House will be better to come here. Ask the traders what should be assisted. See hundreds of the market stalls on the upper floors remaining redundant and frequently used to urinate. Do not even compete to build another new market (Galiran Market—Ed),” he said while pointing out the Wantilan Hall building amidst the market virtually collapsed and just shored up with bamboo struts.

Serious land conversion in four subdistricts Singaraja (Bali Post)—

Rice field conversion in Buleleng seems increasingly rampant lately. The most severe occurs in Buleleng, Sukasada, Seririt and Gerokgak subdistrict. Farmland conversion reaches thirty hectares of the total 11,039 hectares of rice field existing in the region.

The Head of Buleleng Agriculture and Livestock Agency, Nyoman Swatantra, said in Singaraja, Sunday (Jul 14) that based on the record in 2012, the total rice field area converted in Buleleng reached 19 hectares, Sukasada (6 hectares), Seririt (77 hectares) and

Gerokgak (5 hectares). “In Buleleng and Sukasada, the rice field was converted into residential area, while in Gerokgak and Seririt the vineyard was re-cultivated into rice field,” he said.

Swatantra said the farmland conversion in the area indeed had an impact on the decrease in the local grain productivity target.

The Buleleng Agriculture and Livestock Agency started aggressively the intensification with the selection of plant varieties and balanced fertilization. For that purpose, his party intensively conducted the empowerment to

the extension field officer (PPL) in each subdistrict. Besides, the cultivation of Legowo 21 cropping pattern was also continued to be encouraged among the subak organizations in Buleleng so that they could at least maintain the minimal grain production amidst the rapid rate of land conversion in Buleleng.

Another effort was to maintain the condition of irrigation network, mainly the secondary network (network of irrigation leading to wetland) remaining to be done. It was undertaken to maintain the availability of irriga-

tion water and reduce the leakages in the network. Adequate water supply would make it easier for farmers to plant rice three times in succession. “They are our attempts. Hopefully, it will engender a good result and at least we do not purchase unhusked rice even though our rice field has narrowed,” he explained.

He added the prevention of farmland conversion was undertaken by setting the green belt.

It was carried out by providing an understanding for farmers in the meeting with the PPL in each subdistrict. In every occasion,

the PPL also had approached the farmers in order they would not immediately sell their rice fields due to the temptation of expensive land price. However, such approach had not worked because farmers considered having the land, so that their intention could not be prevented by anybody. “We can only keep on trying to remind so that farmers stay to cultivate their farmland and not to sell it to capital owners for residential area or other buildings. We have no authority to prohibit them from selling the land because it is their property,” he added. (kmb)

Reclamation needs various considerations Bali Post

DENPASAR - Reclamation plan to Benoa Bay and Pudut Island spreading across 400 hectares should not be solely intended for the interest of conglomerates. The government should also consider the externalities or the impact caused by the plan, both in terms of the environmental and the economic aspects.

“If it’s a positive externality, it is unnecessary to consider. We’re concerned about the negative externalities because if the plan is undertaken all the economic activities will be focused at the location.

This will only benefit the conglomerates,” said the environmental economist from the Udayana University, Prof. Dr. Wayan Gede Supartha.

Supartha considered the reclamation was indeed essential if the government really wanted to improve and enhance the environmental quality in the region. However, it seemed impossible if the reclamation made at the location near the mangroves planted by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Cristiano Ronaldo was purely for social aims. “Who wants to think about the social aspect only? Reclamation does not need small amount of money so that to get something in return, the new island will have to be sold or leased. Again, the conglomerate will reap the benefits,” he explained.

For that reason, this lecturer of the Faculty of Economics, Warmadewa University, very much warned the permit issuance by the government. Many things should be consider. One of them was that a priority should be given to the community-based economic aspects benefitting small people.

“Moreover, Indonesia remains to have income inequality between the rich and the poor. The issuance of permit should be considered, what does the reclamation for? How about the impact on the environment? Will it benefit the common people? It should not just be profitable for the conglomerates, but should also pay attention to the community-based economy,” he concluded. (kmb32)

SEMARAPURA - Holiday season from July to August makes the tourist arrival to Lembongan and Ceningan Island increase. Unfortu-

nately since Saturday (Jul 13), the Lembongan-Ceningan Bridge once utilized with temporary bamboo frames, has now been dismantled by Bali government to be permanently

repaired. The tourism businesspeople on Lembongan and Ceningan Island have the bridge repair accelerated so that they will not increasingly lose.

Holiday season from July to August makes the tourist arrival to Lembongan and Ceningan Island increase. Unfortunately since Saturday (Jul 13), the Lembongan-Ceningan Bridge once utilized with temporary bamboo frames, has now been dismantled by Bali government to be permanently repaired.

Penida, Nyoman Murta, said last Sunday that Lembongan-Ceningan Bridge repair had been worked on since last Saturday. The improvement was budgeted at IDR 635 million

by Bali government. Murta said the bridge repair would be undertaken thoroughly. It would not only repair the broken parts, but also some other parts that had been rusty and very hazardous for passing people and tourists. As scheduled, the improvement was targeted to complete early August. Meanwhile, the transportation between both islands remained to use boat either for tourists or students starting to attend school on Monday.

In the meantime, one of the tourism businesspeople on Ceningan Island, Putu Jaya, said last Monday that the repair would be accelerated because the tourist arrival was very busy during the period from July to August so that it could be exploited by tourism businesspeople on Ceningan and Lembongan Island. He did not deny if many tourists canceled their trip to Lembongan or Ceningan because they did not want to cross by boat. Even, Putu Jaya mentioned a decline in tourist arrival around 25 percent to his business premises in the form of bungalow and restaurant at Ceningan Kauh.

“The period from July to August is the perfect moment to open a new

business like my premises. However, since the bridge is being repaired many tourists cancelled their visit to Ceningan,” he said. On that account, he had the bridge repair accelerated, so that the business people could exploit the flooding tourists visiting Lembongan and Ceningan in this holiday season.

Meanwhile, Murta added that he would continue to monitor the bridge repair. It should be carried out maximally so that it would not get disconnected again and could be re-operated. He also understood the anxiety experienced by tourism businesspeople. However, everything needed a process and all the parties were asked to be patient. ”Hopefully, it can be accomplished as schedule and we will guard the process,” he concluded.

Previously, the suspension bridge built in 1994 broke up on February 26. Allegedly, it happened because some parts had been rusty and some ropes of the stake had been previously disconnected. Such condition was also often complained by residents of Lembongan and Ceningan and even by tourists because it could endanger the passing residents. To normalize the transportation path, previously the bridge had been temporarily repaired with hundreds of bamboo rods. (kmb31)

Buleleng govt ignores Buleleng Museum

Roof collapses, historical relics damaged by rainwater Singaraja (Bali Post)— Since the past few years, local government seems to have no care about the condition of Buleleng Museum located at the same location as Gedong Kirtya Museum. As evidence, condition of the museum is damaged but local government has never allocated any budget for the repairs.

Observation on Saturday (Jul 13) showed that a number of museum roofs at the front and rear side leaked.

When it rained, the water got into the ceiling so that it would broken-down.

The water got into the museum and affected the historical objects like the paintings and sculptures stored inside.

The objects related to the history of Buleleng were finally damaged.

The most prominent was the post of security guard in front of the museum that really resembled to a warehouse. Other than the damaged roof, the building was also mossy because it was constantly exposed to rainwater.

Since the post of security guard was not occupied it consequently harmed the view of guests wishing to come into the museum.

One of the museum assistants, Made Pariwija, said the museum management

had proposed a budget to repair the museum. However, the proposal was never confirmed because the Buleleng Museum was managed by a foundation.

“Indeed, the museum is managed by a foundation, but the assets are owned by the government,” he said.

Other than damage to a number of buildings, said Pariwija, the toilet in the museum area was not worth using.

Several tourists visiting the museum complained about such condition. To that end, Pariwija asked the help of Buleleng Regent, Putu Agus Suradnyana, to repair the museum. Aside from the budget, he also requested the Regent to assign some contracted workers in the museum so that it would be well-maintained. “We asked the regent to pay attention to the Buleleng Museum because the condition is now very alarming,” he said. The suspect was Sadi alias Di alias Ru alias Goh, 30, a resident from Kangkik hamlet, Shemaiah village, Sikur subdistrict, East Lombok County, NTB. He was arrested by the officers after robbing in Pancor subdistrict, Denggen, Selong, East Lombok, Saturday (Jul 13) at 4:40 a.m. The suspect had been a target of the Bali Police since the suspect Zainal (villa robbery specialist—Ed) et al. was arrested some time ago. “Formerly, this suspect also belonged to the gang led

by Zainal. However, the suspect Sadi established a new gang and took action in Bali and Lombok,” said a source at Bali Police, Sunday (Jul 14).

The source explained that since the suspect Zainal et al. was arrested, police did not keep silent.

They continued to hunt for the other perpetrators, including the suspect

Sadi. While searching for information in the field, police continued to make coordination. Well, police then received information if the suspect Sadi was in Lombok. Hearing this, Chief Gunawan with his personnel consisting of Agung Arka, Tavip and Bayu directly departed to Lombok.

In Lombok, they made surveillance for several days. Ultimately, the suspect was arrested without resistance in Pancor subdistrict, Denggen, Selong, East Lombok on Saturday.

Unexpectedly, the suspect just robbed a house in Lombok. “When we arrested, the suspect has just robbed in the house of one of the residents in Lombok. Finally, we brought the suspect to Bali,” he explained while asking not to publish his name.

Due to frequent accidents, Tabanan Police propose rest area Tabanan (Bali Post)— Frequent traffic accidents in the Denpasar-Gilimanuk deadly route makes the Tabanan Police think hard. It proposes to make a rest area to reduce the number of accidents in Tabanan. The making of rest area for vehicles is considered urgent because the cases of congestion and accidents are always high every year.

One of the triggers is the high density of vehicles passing the route.

Chief of Tabanan Police, Dekananto Eko Purnomo, asserted that one of the solutions to overcome the congestion and accidents in Tabanan was by making a rest area. With the facility, heavy vehicles that would pass could be arranged before crossing the point of saturation. “One of the solutions to overcome the congestion is by making a rest area. If making a new road, it will be very costly and certainly takes a long time,” said the Police Chief, Sunday (Jul 14).

According to him, making a short cut on the Denpasar-Gilimanuk route passing Tabanan was not optimal to resolve the congestion because the

road condition was incomparable to the volume of passing vehicles. As a result, when a vehicle broke down, it would be immediately result in a long congestion. The steep road in Tabanan also vulnerably triggered the accidents.

According to the Police Chief, when entering Tabanan, many drivers like the drivers of truck and bus had been tired and sleepy. Such conditions often led to accidents and claimed casualties. “Therefore, it is required something like rest area for drivers to have a rest. The facility will also arrange heavy vehicles that will continue their journey to Denpasar,” he said.

Similar condition was also disclosed by the Head of Tabanan Transportation, Communications and Informatics Agency, I Made Agus Harta Wiguna. He agreed if the rest area could be built to reduce the congestion and accidents. “We agree to the establishment of rest area to prevent congestion in the deadly route,” he said. Malaysian citizen jailed for smuggling heroin Antara

DENPASAR - The District Court of Denpasar, Bali, sentenced Malasyian citizen Sargunan M Suppiah (37) to 12 years in jail here on Monday for smuggling 372 grams of heroin to Bali.

Unlike others he did not swallow the illegal stuff or put it in his luggage to hide it from inspection but he hid it in his underwear.

He was caught by customs officers upon arrival at Ngurah Rai airport in Denpasar early this year aboard Air Asia AK1364.

The sentence was lower than the prosecutor’s demand which was 17 years in jail and a fine of Rp1 billion.

“Based on facts unveiled during court sessions the defendant was proven illegally importing narcotic stuff as referred to by Article Paragraph 2 of Law Number 35 of 2009 on narcotics,” chief judge Anak Agung Ketut Anom Wirakanta.

Against his favor the chief judge said that with the act the defendant had tarnished the country’s reputation.

The defendant had expressed regret over his act and had never been jailed before which was on his favor.

“Both the defendant and the prosecutor have a right to appeal the verdict and if the right is not exercised it means they accept it” he said.

DENPASAR - An Indonesian court on Monday sentenced a Frenchman to six years in prison for smuggling 69 grams (2.4 ounces) of hashish into the resort island of Bali.

Vincent Roger Petrone, 44, was “found legally and convincingly guilty of importing narcotics”, presiding judge Parulian Saragih told the Denpasar district court in the hearing that lasted only five minutes.

“We sentenced him to six years in jail and a fine of one billion rupiah ($100,000),” he added.

The sentence was heavier than the five years recommended by prosecutors, but the judges did not explain the reason in court.

Customs officers detained Petrone in January as he arrived from Kuala Lumpur because he appeared in a rush to get through airport security.

They could not find any banned items in his luggage and he was taken to hospital where he was given an X-ray, prosecutor I Gusti Putu Atmaja said previously in court. The hashish was discovered inside his digestive tract and had been inserted via his anus, prosecutors said.

Petrone appeared tense as the verdict was read out and refused to speak to journalists outside the court.

“We were hoping he would be sentenced to five years but it didn’t turn out that way. Despite a harsh verdict we will think about whether to appeal,” his lawyer Erwin Siregar told reporters after the trial.

Petrone, a plasterer, was born in the eastern city of Dijon but his current address was given by the court as the French Pacific island territory of New Caledonia.

In January British grandmother Lindsay Sandiford was sentenced to death after cocaine with an estimated street value of $2.4 million was found in her suitcase as she arrived on a flight from Bangkok.

Under Indonesian law a death sentence can be passed for attempts to smuggle drugs weighing more than five grams. But judges seldom impose the death penalty in cases involving such small amounts.

Woman gored during final bull run in Spain Associated Press Writer

PAMPLONA, Spain — A bull gored an Australian woman and left her seriously injured during the final bull run of this year’s annual San Fermin festival in Spain on Sunday. Four other runners were hospitalized with cuts and bruises.

The 23-year-old woman, identified only as J.E., was gored in the back and suffered multiple rib fractures and damage to her right lung that left her in “very grave” condition after an operation at Navarra Hospital, said the regional government that organizes the festival.

The Australian was struck by a massive Miura bull as she clung to wooden barriers outside the bullring entrance, said regional health authority spokesman Javier Sesma.

It is very rare for women to be gored during the annual festival since most of the runners are men. Javier Solano, a San Fermin expert working for national broadcaster TVE, said records showed only two other women had been injured by gorings in the recent history of the fiesta.

The four injured runners who were tossed by bulls or fell as they ran were identified as a 39-year-old man from California, a 23-year-old man from Madrid and two men from Navarra, said the regional government organizers.

None of those injuries were serious.

Dramatic confrontations between runners and bulls had occurred during the previous two days of the festival.

BELFAST - Violence flared for a second night around traditional Orange Day parades in Northern Ireland, with police coming under attack from petrol bombs, fireworks, stones and bottles and responding with water cannon.

One police officer was engulfed in flames when struck by a petrol bomb, but it was quickly extinguished by colleagues. The officer remained on duty after being examined by medical personnel, a spokesman said.

Thousands of pro-British Protestants march every summer in the British province, a regular flashpoint for sectarian violence as Catholics, many of whom favor unification with Ireland, see the parades as a provocation.

Violence between the two religious groups still sometimes flares

since a peace deal was signed in 1998, which largely ended three decades of strife. Much of Belfast remains divided along religious and nationalist lines.

The Orange Order, which organizes marches to mark the 1690 victory at the Battle of the Boyne by Protestant Prince William of Orange over Catholic King James of England, was angered this year when authorities ruled they could not walk along a stretch of road that divides the two communities.

That sparked violence on Friday

evening, after tens of thousands of Orange Order marchers, wearing orange sashes and waving British flags, paraded at more than a dozen venues across Northern Ireland.

A total 32 police were injured on Friday night in what Chief Constable Matt Baggott described as “shocking and disgraceful” violence, including head, eye and leg wounds.

Another 400 reinforcements were being brought in from Britain as trouble continued through the weekend. More than 20 people have been arrested.

Airlines insist they’ll stick with Boeing Dreamliner after fire Reuters

LONDON - Airlines expressed confidence in the safety of Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner on Sunday as investigators searched for the cause of a fire on one of the advanced jets and billions were wiped off the company’s market value.

British officials said initial checks into what they called a serious incident appeared to rule out any link to the battery-related problems that grounded the Dreamliner fleet for three months earlier this year.

The fire on the Ethiopian Airlines plane at Heathrow Airport in London and a separate technical problem on a second 787 owned by Britain’s Thomson Airways on Friday raised new questions about an aircraft seen as crucial to Boeing’s future.

The incidents were a setback for a company trying to rebuild confidence in its flagship jet and compete with Airbus in the booming market for more fuel-efficient long-distance planes. Britain’s Tui Travel, which owns six European airlines including Thomson Airways, said its plane turned back during a flight from England to Florida and had a small number of unspecified components replaced. The parts were unrelated to the battery, it said.

“We want to reassure our customers that we have every confidence in this aircraft and would never operate it if we weren’t 100 percent sure of its safety,” a TUI Travel spokeswoman said.

No one was injured in the fire on the empty Ethiopian Airlines plane, which was parked at Heathrow. However, it closed Britain’s busiest airport for 90 minutes. Britain’s Air Accident Investigations Branch (AAIB), part of the Department for Transport, said the damaged Ethiopian Airlines plane was being examined in a hangar at Heathrow.

Boeing shares closed down 4.7 percent at $101.87 (67.40 pounds) on Friday after the Heathrow fire, knocking $3.8 billion (2.5 billion pounds) off the company’s market capitalisation.

In the early stages of the investigation, airlines said they would continue to fly their Dreamliners, while others confirmed they would stick to their plans to buy the aircraft. Virgin Atlantic said it remained committed to taking delivery of 16 of the planes from the autumn of 2014. Delta Air Lines is buying a 49 percent stake in the airline.

“We are confident that Boeing and the relevant authorities are working hard to ensure that the appropriate action is being taken,” Virgin said in a statement.

He hounded Marquez in the closing stages but could not get close enough to attempt a pass. The Briton said he was happy to equal his best MotoGP result as it proved the Tech 3 Yamaha was now on par with the factory bikes.

“I think I tried my best,” he added. “I came back as close as I could and I never gave up. “I had to make some passes but I’m pleased with this result. It’s good to be up [on the podium] - I’m feeling completely drained after the crashes.

“My guys have done a fantastic job and now we’re finally able to be consistently challenging at the front.”

Judging by his smile, it was a much better feeling this time. The 31-year old Frenchman captured the title at the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships on Sunday,

beating Lleyton Hewitt of Australia 5-7, 7-5, 6-3.

Mahut, a 2007 Newport finalist and a wild-card entrant this week, won his second career ATP title. The other came at ‘s-Hertogenbosch last month.

Mahut lost the longest match in tennis history three years ago, dropping the fifth set to John Isner 70-68 at Wimbledon in a match that lasted

11 hours, 5 minutes. A display with items used in that match is located a few hundred yards away in the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

On Sunday morning, Mahut advanced after beating American Michael Russell 6-2, 6-2 in just 63 minutes. Mahut needed 2 hours, 19 minutes to get past Hewitt. Then he had to prepare for a doubles semifinal.

“You guys know I can play a long time, stay a long time on the court,” he said, breaking into a grin while standing on a rear practice court. “I would like to tell you I’m not tired.

I’m tired, but I have the trophy in my bag, so I just need to get ready to play one more match.”

In the final set, Mahut broke in the sixth and eighth games to take

control. He won the final point with a drop shot at the net, then dropped to his knees, putting both hands to his face before bending face down.

“I was not supposed to play,” he said of gaining a wild-card entry into the tournament. “I wasn’t able to play the (qualifiers). I’m really grateful to (the tourney director) for the wild card he gave me.”

Lebanese ref gives evidence in corruption trial Associated Press Writer

SINGAPORE — A Lebanese referee serving time in a Singapore jail has given evidence at the start of the corruption trial of accused match fixer Eric Ding Si Yang. Ali Sabbagh, dressed in purple prison overalls, avoided eye contact with Ding as he entered the courtroom Monday before revealing details of plans to fix matches.

Sabbagh said he first met Ding, who was calling himself ‘James Zen,’ at Beirut in June, 2012, and was lured by the promise of rich pay days.

“I was told I could stop anytime but most don’t,” Sabbagh told a Singapore court. “If I did a ‘job’ for James, linesmen would also be involved to make it easier for me.”

He identified James Zen as Ding, a 31-year-old nightclub owner who is accused of trying to rig matches in

Kuwait, Indonesia and Jordan.

Sabbagh said Ding wanted him to help fix results of matches, and sent him 35 links to YouTube videos about match fixing with instructions to study them and then delete the emails.

“He wanted me to understand and learn how to make such decisions for matches in future,” Sabbagh said.

Ding was arrested in April and charged in May with three counts of corruption for allegedly supplying prostitutes to the three Lebanese match officials, in hopes of swaying them to fix the Asian Football Confederation match between Singapore-based Tampines Rovers and India’s East Bengal.

He denies all the charges and is expected to face a nine-day trial.

If found guilty, Ding faces a maximum of five years in jail, a fine of up to 100,000 Singapore dollars ($79,000), or both, on each count

of corruption.

Sabbagh was last month sentenced to six months in jail by a Singapore court after pleading guilty to influencing two linesmen to help fix a match in Singapore in April. All three men were arrested before the match and charged with “corruptly receiving gratification in the form of free sexual service” arranged by Ding. Linesmen Ali Eid, 33, and Abdallah Taleb, 37, were sentenced to three months in jail but were released within hours after the court took into account time already served while waiting for their sentences.

At that trial, Gary Low, lawyer for the Lebanese trio, had argued that Sabbagh did not make any financial gain and added that the referee was willing to be a “star witness” in cooperating with authorities to assist in investigations into illegal gambling.

STOCKHOLM - Celia Okoyino da Mbabi scored twice for Germany as the holders beat Iceland 3-0 to go top of Group B at the women’s European championship in Sweden on Sunday. Lena Lotzen gave Germany the lead in the 24th minute, turning her marker inside out before curling home a low left-footed shot.

With Germany dominating the game, Okoyino da Mbabi doubled the advantage 10 minutes into the second half, thumping home a rebound off the underside of the crossbar after a shot by Leonie Maier.

JAKARTA — Seventeen people were killed in a stadium stampede after spectators rioted to protest a local boxer’s loss in a championship match in eastern Indonesia, officials said Monday.

Youth and Sports Minister Roy Suryo said the victims — 11 of them women — were trampled to death as about 1,500 spectators scrambled out the overcrowded stadium to escape the riot that broke out just before midnight Sunday. Kota Lama Sport Stadium has a capacity of 500 to 600, he said. Police said it had two working exits.

Thirty-two people are being treated at hospital for injuries.

A total of 84 boxers participated in the Bupati (Regent) Cup Cham-

pionships that started July 9 in the Papua province town of Nabire, Suryo said.

The riot happened after the final of the 58-kilogram (128-pound) division between Alvius Rumkorem and Yulianus Pigome, who Suryo said are from different tribes.

Points awarded by a panel of judges to Rumkorem triggered protests by Pigome supporters, Suryo said.

The losing boxer’s supporters threw chairs at the judges and the winner’s supporters responded by

throwing bottles and broken chairs, panicking people in the stadium, said Lt. Col. Gede Sumerta, a provincial police spokesman.

Police and soldiers were deployed to stop the fighting, Sumerta said, adding that police investigating the case have questioned 12 people — five organizers and seven witnesses.

Nabire, about 3,200 kilometers (2,000 miles) east of Jakarta, is on Cendrawasih Bay on the north coast of Papua.

Yet the committee said not only Indonesia but also other parties to ICCPR including developed nations were facing the challenge, he said.

The 15 years of democratic reform has brought a significant change to Indonesia and made it a strong democratic country where the principles of human rights are internalized progressively and human rights mindset and paradigm are implemented intensively, he said, The steadfastness and commitment on the part of all stakeholders are a prerequisite to the attainment of desired progress, he said.

The committee which is made up of 18 independent experts is tasked with monitoring the implementation of the covenant through consultative and constructive dialogs.

JAKARTA - The food polices applied by the government to meet national needs are speculative as shown by the fact that supply and demand remain imbalanced, causing prices to also remain high, a chamber official said.

“Supply is low while demand is high. This condition is prone to speculation,” Natsir Mansur, deputy chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) for regional empowerment and logistics affairs, said in a press statement here on Monday.

He said the minister of trade and the minister of agriculture were still unable to handle the most basic problems of food such as production, distribution and trade.

“The ministers have already known the basic problems that always come every year such the problem of sugar, beef, chicken, garlic, soy, chilli, horticultural products, yet they still issue speculative polices as indicated in the prices which still remain high and food commodity supplies which remain low,” said Natsir.

The Kadin deputy chairman said that the two ministers still did not understand the importance of a food policy of a nation. He said that the logistics management in this country did not take side with the people so that their polices were still chaos.

Natsir said that Commission VI of the House of Representatives (DPR) actually had a strategic role in national food policy. But the role is helpless because the DPR control over the supply and demand for food is very weak. The DPR does not either use its budgetary right.

“The DPR should have taken sanctions against the two ministries by reducing their budget because they are not able to control food production, distribution and trade that cause the people to suffer from the shortage of supplies and high prices,” said Natsir.

Ahead, the regional governments should be given the authority to issue food policies because they know their own respective needs for food. The food matters are handled too much by the two ministries, he said In the meantime, the People’s Coalition for Food Sovereignty (KRKP) has recently urged the government to reduce the import of horticultural products for the sake of protecting the farmers.

KRKP Advocacy and Networking Officer Said Abdullah said on Tuesday (July 2) that the government has opened the door to imports 13 horticultural products after the rise of subsidized fuel prices.

He said the government has issued the import approval letter for the second semester in 2013 to import 13 horticultural products of 260,064 tons in an effort to maintain price stability and reduce the impact of fuel oil price hike.

Therefore Abdullah urged the government to be serious in handling the horticultural products and reducing the import.

He added that the government should support and motivate the farmers to continue to increase horticultural products and to gradually reduce the import.

Indonesia’s horticultural imports reached 1.5 million tons with a total value of US$1.2 billion in 2010 and in 2011 it increased to 2.05 million tons with a value of US$1.6 billion.

Then in 2012 it rose again to 2.2 million tons with import values of US$1.8 billion.

Abdullah said that the increase in horticultural imports has caused negative in the government trade balance.

BUSINESS Volatile shipping market shows signs of recovery Agence France-Presse

LONDON - The cost of shipping raw materials is surging but amid slowing Chinese economic growth and other global strains, the market remains well below its historical peak reached just before the financial crisis.

The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) -- which tracks rates to transport dry commodities such as coal, iron ore and grain across 20 shipping routes -- jumped 68 percent during the first half of the year.

The key barometer had struck an 18month high at 1,179 points at the beginning of July.

But despite the rally, “2013 has been another challenging year for dry bulk shipowners, with rock-bottom charter rates and record-low (ship) asset values”, maritime brokerage house Banchero Costa said in a recent client report.

“We can now see the light at the end of the tunnel, but it will still take time for the market to balance out.”

The BDI is historically a volatile market -- soaring to an all-time record high level of 11,793 points in 2008 amid surging Chinese demand for commodities -- before plunging in the wake of the global financial crisis.

Ships ordered in the boom years but delivered in the downturn created an excess of freight space that in turn caused sharp falls on the BDI. “The increase in the supply of new ships should slow considerably over the next few years as the current over capacity has reduced any need to” build more, said Thomas Pugh, commodities analyst at the Capital Economics research group.

But demand for transporting raw materials “should increase at a faster pace than it has done for the last few years”, he told AFP. “We expect Chinese imports of iron ore to increase this year and exports of coal from the US to continue to grow strongly.

Despite the predicted pickup in demand for iron ore, which is used to make steel, China’s economic growth is forecast to have dropped to 7.5 percent in the second quarter of this year.

The estimate, calculated from an AFP survey of 10 economists ahead of fresh data due on Monday, is a further deceleration from the already slower 7.7 percent growth rate recorded in the first three months of 2013.

Asian powerhouse China is the world’s second biggest economy after the United States, and is therefore a major consumer of most raw materials.

Turning to the outlook for the shipping sector, Pugh added that the BDI barometer was not expected to stage a major recovery any time soon.

China growth slows to 7.5% in April-June Agence France-Presse

BEIJING - China’s gross domestic product expanded 7.5 percent in the April-June quarter, official data showed Monday, a second consecutive slowdown in growth as worries mount over the health of the world’s number two economy.

While the figure is in line with a median forecast of 10 economists surveyed by AFP, it follows a series of weak numbers pointing to trouble in the Asian giant, with analysts saying it could miss Beijing’s 2013 target.

Growth in the first six months of the year came in at 7.6 percent, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said, adding performance in that period was “generally stable” and within expectations.

“However we are still faced with grim and complicated economic situations,” the NBS said in a statement.

The first three months of the year saw the economy expand 7.7 percent, a decrease from the 7.9 percent recorded in the last

quarter of 2012.

This year’s figures have so far proved disappointing after the 7.8 percent seen in 2012, itself the worst in 13 years.

“As of now, China’s GDP has been staying under eight percent for five straight quarters, a clear sign of distress,” economist Ren Xianfang of IHS Global Insight said.

“The rather sharp growth deceleration and the recent financial market turmoil indicate that risks have been building on both the financial and real goods sector,” she added.

Comments last week by China’s finance minister raised questions about whether its 2013 target of 7.5 percent can be achieved.

“Our expected GDP growth rate this year is seven percent,” Lou Jiwei told reporters on the sidelines of an annual strategic and economic dialogue between China and the United States in Washington on Thursday.

“Of course, it won’t be a big problem for us if we achieve growth of seven percent or 6.5 percent.”

China’s leaders have proclaimed a longterm goal of rebalancing the economy, and since coming to power as Communist Party chief in November and then state president in March, Xi Jinping has placed less emphasis on the traditional growth drivers of exports and investment, and more on consumer spending.

NBS spokesman Sheng Laiyuan blamed the latest slowdown on China’s “declining potential productivity”, which he said meant the same investment could no longer generate the same returns as in the past.

Speaking to reporters, he also cited “the international environment that remained complicated and severe”, an apparent reference to weak economic conditions abroad, including recession-hit Europe, still struggling with a debt crisis.

The slower rate was also a result of measures taken by the new leadership, which “attaches particular importance on restructuring and retooling the economy”, he added.

Egypt, Jordan, Iraq seek to stem Syrian refugee flood NEARLY a third of Syria’s 21 million people are now a refugee or displaced within their own country.

That staggering number has begun to overwhelm neighboring countries and international organizations say some states are beginning to severely restrict the inflow of Syrians fleeing the conflict.

Last week, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees reported that Syrians flying into

Egypt are now being turned away.

Prior to President Mohamed Morsi being deposed Egypt was allowing visa-free arrival for Syrians fleeing the conflict, and aid workers in Cairo estimate there are about 300,000 Syrians in the country now. Egypt’s current military rulers began requiring visas for Syrian nationals shortly after removing Morsi from power on July 3, even though the Egyptian embassy in Syria reportedly lacks

the capacity to issue them at the present time.

Egypt’s policy shift follows Iraq, Turkey, and Jordan who have all sought to limit the refugee inflow. The changes have resulted in thousands of Syrian refugees stuck in border regions where they remain unsafe and sometimes beyond the reach of adequate humanitarian assistance.

That has left many international organizations in a difficult position: They

acknowledge the strain the refugee population has put on host countries but still want Jordan and other nations to keep their borders open.

“We are absolutely commending these governments for having been so generous. We do understand that they’re worried about having so many Syrians on their soil, but if people are on the other side of the border unable to escape... the most humane thing a country can do when people are

fleeing for their lives is to keep the borders open,” says Melissa Fleming, a spokesperson for UNHCR. Myanmar leader visits Britain, may be challenged on human rights Reuters LONDON - President Thein Sein, the first leader of Myanmar to visit Britain in more than a quarter of a century, will hold talks on Monday with Prime Minister David Cameron, who is under pressure to confront him on human rights.

Sein is due to talk trade, aid and democracy with Cameron and his ministers during a two-day visit at a time when Myanmar is opening up its oil, gas and telecoms sectors to foreign investors, with further liberalization likely.

Sein, a former military commander, is trying to get the West to help Myanmar’s economy recover from decades of military dictatorship, Soviet-style planning and international sanctions.

Western leaders have praised

him for ending the house arrest of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, releasing some political prisoners, and allowing the opposition to contest an election.

But they want him to loosen further the military’s grip on the mineralrich state formerly known as Burma before a 2015 presidential election which the British-educated Suu Kyi hopes to contest. Suu Kyi, a Nobel laureate, visited Britain last year.

At least 237 people have been killed in Myanmar in religious violence over the past year and about 150,000 people have been displaced. Most of the victims were Muslim and the deadliest incidents happened in Rakhine State, where about 800,000 Rohingya Muslims live, according to the United Nations.

NEW YORK — With chants and prayers, sermons and signs, outrage over a jury’s decision to clear George Zimmerman in the shooting of an unarmed black teenager poured from street protests and church pulpits Sunday amid calls for federal civil rights charges to be filed in the case.

Demonstrations large and small broke out across the country — ranging from a few dozen more than a thousand — in support of the family of Trayvon Martin as protesters decried the not guilty verdict as a miscarriage of justice.

The NAACP and protesters called for federal civil rights charges against Zimmerman, who was acquitted Saturday in Martin’s February 2012 shooting death, which unleashed a national debate over racial profiling, selfdefense and equal justice.

The Justice Department said it is looking into the case to determine whether federal prosecutors should file criminal civil rights charges now that Zimmerman has

been acquitted in the state case.

Meanwhile, President Barack Obama and religious and civil rights leaders urged calm in hopes of ensuring peaceful demonstrations in the wake of a case that became an emotional flash point.

In New York City, hundreds of protesters marched into Times Square on Sunday night, zigzagging through Manhattan’s streets to avoid police lines. Sign-carrying marchers thronged the busy intersection, chanting “Justice for!

Trayvon Martin!” as they made their way from Union Square, blocking traffic for more than an hour before moving on.

In San Francisco and Los Angeles — where an earlier protest was dispersed with beanbag rounds — police closed streets as protesters marched Sunday to condemn Zimmerman’s acquittal.

Rand Powdrill, 41, of San Leandro, said he came to the San Francisco march with about 400 others to “protest the execution of an innocent black teenager.”

“If our voices can’t be heard, then this is just going to keep going on,” he said.

Robots to revolutionize US farms, ease labor woes Associated Press Writer

SALINAS, California — Researchers are now designing robots for the last frontier of agricultural mechanization — fruits and vegetables destined for the U.S. fresh market, which have resisted mechanization because they’re sensitive to bruising.

The robots are designed to handle these delicate crops by integrating advanced sensors, powerful computing, electronics, computer vision, robotic hardware and algorithms, as well as networking and high precision GPS localization technologies.

On a windy morning in California’s Salinas Valley, a tractor pulled a wheeled, metal contraption over rows of budding lettuce plants. Engineers from Silicon Valley tinkered with the software to ensure the machine was eliminating the right leafy buds.

The Lettuce Bot can “thin” a field of lettuce in the time it takes about 20 workers to do the job by hand.

Most agricultural robots won’t be commercially available for at least a few years. But in this region known as America’s Salad Bowl, where for a century fruits and vegetables have been planted and harvested by migrant workers, the machines could prove revolutionary.

“There aren’t enough workers to take the available jobs, so the robots can come and alleviate some of that problem,” said Ron Yokota, a farming operations manager at Tanimura & Antle, the fresh produce company that owns the field where the Lettuce Bot was being tested.

Research into fresh produce mechanization was dormant for years because of an over-abundance of workers and pressures from farmworker labor unions.

In recent years, as the labor supply has tightened and competition from abroad has increased, growers have sought out machines to reduce labor costs and supplement the nation’s unstable agricultural workforce. The federal government, venture capital companies and commodity boards have stepped up with funding.

“We need to increase our efficiency, but nobody wants to work in the fields,” said Stavros G. Vougioukas, professor of biological and agricultural engineering at the University of California, Davis.

But farmworker advocates say mechanization would lead to workers losing jobs, growers using more pesticides and the food supply becoming less safe.

Fresh fruit harvesting remains the biggest challenge. In addition to mistakes in deciphering color and feel, machines have a hard time distinguishing produce from leaves and branches.

And most importantly, matching the dexterity and speed of farmworkers has proved elusive.

“The hand-eye coordination workers have is really amazing, and they can pick incredibly fast. To replicate that in a machine, at the speed humans do and in an economical manner, we’re still pretty far away,” said Daniel L. Schmoldt at the U.S. Agriculture Department’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture.

In California, engineers with the Spanish company Agrobot are working with local growers to test a strawberry harvester.

The machine is equipped with 24 arms whose movement is directed through an optical sensor. It allows the robot to make a choice based on fruit color, quality and size. The berries are plucked and placed on a conveyor belt, where the fruit is packed by a worker.

Experts say it will take at least 10 years for harvesters to be available commercially for most fresh-market fruit — not a moment too soon for farmers worried about the availability of workers, said Lupe Sandoval, managing director of the California Farm Labor Contractor Association.

“If you can put a man on the moon,” Sandoval said, “you can figure out how to pick fruit with a machine.”

NEW DELHI — India’s last telegram went out late Sunday, marking the end of a service that millions of Indians had relied on for fast communication for more than 160 years. Hundreds of people thronged the 75 telegraph offices remaining in the country to send their last telegrams to friends or family as a keepsake.

The company canceled holidays for staff at the offices to handle the rush, Shameem Akhtar, general manager at the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd., which runs India’s telegram service, said Monday.

The company says declining revenues forced it to end the service, which had become obsolete in an age of email, reliable landlines and ubiquitous cellphones. Some of the last-day users sent telegrams to Kapil Sibal, India’s minister for telecommunications, pleading for the service to be continued.

“The losses were mounting. It was not viable to have kept it going much longer,” Akhtar said. That was especially true as the number of cellphone users exploded, with 867 million subscribers as of April.

The telecommunications ministry said it lost $250 million in the last seven years and that it was time to put an end to the service. India’s telegram service began in 1850, when the first telegram was sent from the eastern city of Kolkata to Diamond Harbor, a southern suburb nearly 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the city center.

Over the next few decades, telegraph offices proliferated, wiring the vast subcontinent with a network that became known for its speed and dependability.

At its peak in the mid-1980s, more than 45,000 telegraph offices dotted the country, with tens of thousands of telegraph workers and delivery men dispatching more than 600,000 telegrams a day. From birth and death announcements, to college admissions, job appointments and court summons, the telegram was the main way tens of millions of Indians __ in the remotest parts of the country and in its teeming cities __ received important news.

Until recently, the government used telegrams to inform recipients of top civilian awards and for court notices. India’s armed forces even recognized telegrams from troops extending vacations or from soldiers’ families requesting their presence at home for a funeral.

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Vansteenberghe would not say who attended the gala wedding. But he said the bride was coy about her long, white dress, wanting to keep it from public view.

“All I can say is that it was a dress with a deeply plunging back,” Vansteenberghe said. He added that The event was “confidential” because “she wanted to be left alone on the day of her marriage.”

Martinez. While there was no sign of a baby bump when The Associated Press interviewed the Oscar-winning star in early April, Vansteenberghe said that “she is very pregnant.”

LOS ANGELES — Universal’s minions ran away with the box office for the second week in a row. With $44.8 million in domestic ticket sales Friday through Sunday, the animated sequel “Despicable Me 2” outdid the debuts of the Adam Sandler comedy “Grown Ups 2” and director Guillermo del Toro’s monsters-versus-robots action film “Pacific Rim.” The weekend’s No. 1 movie featuring Steve Carell as the voice of ex-supervillain Gru made another $55.5 million overseas. That brought its global twoweek total to $472.4 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

“This has become the July film to beat right now,” said Paul Dergarabedian, president of the box office tracking division of Hollywood.com. “There’s something about the minions that audiences just love.”

Sony was pleased with Sandler’s

second-best movie opening of his career with $42.5 million in sales in the U.S. and Canada (His best domestic opening was “The Longest Yard” from 2005 with $58.6 million over four days). Overseas, the comedy brought in $1.7 million.

The movie brings together former NBA star Shaquille O’Neal as a bumbling police officer with a host of comedy All-Stars including Chris Rock and David Spade playing awkward parents.

represented a disappointing start domestically for Warner Bros. and partner Legendary Entertainment. Figures released by the studio showed it doing better overseas.

The movie took in $53 million from 38 markets outside the U.S. and Canada, representing about half its overseas footprint. It has yet to open in China or Japan, the home of the movie’s co-star, Rinko Kikuchi.

Warner Bros. said the debut of “Pacific Rim” in several countries such as Russia and South Korea was better than that of other films that have gone on to gross more than $300 million internationally, like “Transformers 2” and “Prometheus.”

The movie had an estimated production budget of $185 million, not including the millions spent on marketing, so there is still the opportunity for it to make its money back.

Fizziology, a company that tracks buzz on social networks like Twitter and Facebook, said that 82 percent of posts on “Pacific Rim” were positive ahead of the opening, with only 6 percent negative as some people drew negative comparisons to the “Power Rangers” or “Godzilla.” The film draws heavily on Japan’s “Kaiju” movie monster tradition.

Fizziology President Ben Carlson said the appeal of “Pacific Rim” to 3-D moviegoers and the fact it is one of the most-hyped films of the summer could help it with Asian audiences, he said.

“This movie’s really pre-wired to do well in those territories,” he said.

Disney’s “The Lone Ranger,” starring Johnny Depp as Tonto, took in $11.1 million domestically in its second week, falling into fifth place behind “The Heat” starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, which brought in another $14 million in its third week.
