Angelina Jolie, Daniel Day-Lewis honored by Queen Elizabeth II Associated Press

LONDON — Angelina Jolie can add royal recognition to Hollywood stardom. The Oscar-winning actress has been named an honorary dame — the female version of a knight — by Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II. Jolie, a United Nations special envoy, received the honor on Friday for her work combating sexual violence in war zones.

Jolie, who won a supporting actress Academy Award in 2000 for “Girl, Interrupted,” has spoken of scaling back her movie roles to focus on humanitarian work. She said that “to receive an honor related to foreign policy means a great deal to me, as it is what I wish to dedicate my working life to.”

Because she is not a British or Commonwealth citizen, Jolie won’t be entitled to use the title “dame” before her name. Previous U.S recipients of honorary knighthoods include director Steven Spielberg, Microsoft founder Bill Gates and former President Ronald Reagan.

Jolie, who was in London this week to co-host an international summit on sexual violence, was among hundreds of people recognized in the queen’s annual Birthday Honors List for services to their community or national life.

Jembrana has paid the attention to the damaged classrooms. However, so far it remains to receive no fullest treatment. It definitely happens due to limited funds. One of the classrooms experiencing the damage is the SDN 3 Pendem elementary school located not far from the office of the regent of Jembrana.

The damage was briefly inspected by the Regent of Jembrana, I Putu Artha, recently. Even, Regent Artha requested the relevant agency to follow it up. “It is shameful if

there are damaged schools in the town. If it can be helped through regional budget, please refurbish it, otherwise simply use the special allocation fund (DAK),” he said.

The regent did not want there were still damaged schools. Moreover, it disturbed the students’ learning activities. According to him, the damage at the SDN 3 Pendem should get the attention.

Since the past three years, the construction of classrooms had been prioritized. At some high schools

such as junior and senior high school, it had been made additional classrooms and other rooms such as laboratories.

However, they could not be entirely resolved. A number of supporting facility procurements considered useless, such as J-Net network at schools, were discontinued. Based on the data in the Jembrana Education Agency, there were approximately seven buildings of elementary school were damaged this year. They included the SDN 3 Pendem suffering minor damages. Wall in the teacher’s room and classroom had cracked and the wooden structure were fragile. Actually the classroom building was already renovated in 2009, but it was only done to the roof section. The previous wooden

roof was replaced with steel hood.

Unfortunately, the lower part of the building was not repaired. Actually the building was already damaged when repairing the roof. Other than cracked walls, the window sills and doors had also been porous as eaten by termites.

The Basic Education Division Head of Jembrana Education Agency, I Nyoman Wenten, justified if the SDN 3 Pendem suffered minor damage. According to him, it would be fixed by using the school operation assistance (BOS) or regional budget.

At the moment, approximately seven schools were in severely damaged condition and would be repaired with the help of special allocation fund and school operation assistance. “Later on, there will assistance for library and we will focus on the heavily

damaged building. Meanwhile, the damage to the building of the SDN 3 Pendem is categorized into moderate,” said Wenten.

An observer of education doubling as an activist of Forkot NGO, Nur Hariri, said the local government having allocated the educational funds for school fees should also be coupled with the infrastructure of the school because adequate infrastructure also played a role to improve the quality of student learning. “Free school fee and cheap education do not necessarily mean if it is an educational service of economical class. It must go hand in hand because it (infrastructure) also serves to increase the quality of teaching and learning. But the most important is the quality of the teachers,” she said. (olo)

The police inspect the SDN 2 Susut due to the poisoning case which happen there (Jun 13) still had to undergo intensive treatment at hospital. At least, twelve students were registered to undergo treatment at two different hospitals, namely 2 students at BMC Hospital and 10 students at Bangli Hospital.

Principal of the SDN 2 Susut elementary school, Wayan Sudarma, admitted that until Saturday noon there were still a number of students under treatment at hospital. His party was still waiting for further development of the student’s health condition. Sudarma said that due to the poisoning incident experienced by dozens of students, the conferment of academic performance which was due to be held on Saturday morning

should be postponed until Monday (Jun 16).

“The academic performance delivery will be held next Monday,” said Sudarma.

As reported earlier, dozens of students of the SDN 2 Susut should be rushed to emergency room (ER) of Bangli Hospital due to poisoning case after enjoying wrap rice and snacks at a farewell party of the sixth grade students of the local school, Friday (Jun13). They were taken by each family after complaining about nausea and dizziness. Up to 11:00 p.m. last Friday, the number of student coming to the Emergency Room of Bangli Hospital was reported to amount to 96 students.

Bodies placed in coffin SPECTACLE of coffin in a neat row embellishes the mortuary of Sanglah Hospital. A total of about 17 coffins are placed in the mortuary. Before putting them into the coffin, the bodies are preserved first with formaldehyde to prevent decomposition process.

The Head of Sanglah Hospital Medical Forensic Installation, Dudut Rustyadi, when met on Saturday (Jun 14) explained if the corpses were placed in the coffin because freezers or refrigerators used to store bodies

in the mortuary of Sanglah Hospital had been full. “It has the capacity of 14 bodies and has been fully occupied.

Eventually, the remaining bodies are placed in a coffin and preserved with formaldehyde,” said Dudut.

All the bodies were not abandoned bodies but deliberately commended by families for a variety of reasons.

“Most people commend a body for reasons of ongoing religious ceremony at their home, so it will be taken home when the ceremony has

ended,” said Dudut.

Other than freezer, Sanglah Hospital also had container that could accommodate 48 bodies. At the moment, the container held at least 32 abandoned or unidentified bodies and could still accommodate about 16 bodies. However, as the container had been damaged since a year ago, most families who wanted to leave the body then chose to put it in a coffin and injected it with formaldehyde.

According to Dudut, the engine

of the container was out of order and should be replaced with the new one.

It was granted by Australia in 2002 after the first Bali bombing incident.

“It is quite old and has not worked properly since 2010. The engine has been replaced for several times, but always broke,” he said.

Most of the bodies put in the container were abandoned or unidentified bodies. To prevent the decomposition process since the engine coolant in the container was not functioning, the

However, after consuming the food, she and her family members claimed to have not experienced any symptoms of poisoning as afflicting dozens of those students. “I just got information about the poisoning incident around 3:00 p.m.,” she said.

CANGGU - Friday June 6th saw teams from across Asia and Australia strap on their football boots for the commencement of Asia’s biggest AFL carnival. The 2014 Aquarius Bali Masters Football tournament was held at the manicured grounds of the island’s newly renovated, premier sporting facility, The Canggu Club. The annual event hosted by the Bali Geckos Australian Football Club and officially endorsed by the AFL masters, is the biggest football tournament to date on the AFL calendar. Teams were keen to compete, with hopefuls travelling from Western Australia, Borneo, Singapore some from as far afield as Adelaide, Victoria and Dubai to vie for the Masters’ Cup.

Based on field observation, the Forensic Laboratory team consisting of five personnel came to the home of Ni Wayan Karmiati around 11:00 a.m. The team immediately conducted an inventory to the amount of food suspected as the cause of poisoning. The samples taken were including several types of unprocessed foodstuff, food scraps and water. Similarly, the officers conducted an examination of the location and Karmiati’s kitchen utensils used for cooking.

Chief of Bangli Police Criminal Investigation Unit, Nyoman Sukanada, with permission from Bangli Police Chief Suswanto said the examination carried out by his party was to check the condition of cooking location and to look for the rest of alleged cause of the food poisoning for lab test. “All related samples have been brought to Forensic Laboratory. We’re still waiting for the results whether the samples caused the poisoning,” he said. Related to the incident, so far police remained to collect information from multiple parties. Sukanada said there were at least six witnesses asked for their testimonies.

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Singapore grapples with smartphone addiction

SINGAPORE - Easily distracted? Can’t be separated from your smartphone? Constantly checking your device for no real reason? Chances are you’re an addict -- and you may even need professional help.

Psychiatrists in Singapore are pushing for medical authorities to formally recognise addiction to the Internet and digital devices as a disorder, joining other countries around the world in addressing a growing problem.

Singapore and Hong Kong top an Asia-Pacific region that boasts some of the world’s highest smartphone penetration rates, according to a 2013 report by media monitoring firm Nielsen.

Some 87 percent of Singapore’s 5.4 million population own smartphones -- as Internet-capable phones with cameras are popularly known.

In the United States, where there are similar concerns about the impact

of smartphones on society, a 65 percent penetration rate would not even make the top five in Asia Pacific.

Singaporeans also spend on average 38 minutes per session on Facebook, almost twice as long as Americans, according to a study by Experian, a global information services company.

Adrian Wang, a psychiatrist at the upmarket Gleneagles Medical Centre, said digital addiction should be classified as a psychiatric disorder.

“Patients come for stress anxietyrelated problems, but their coping mechanism is to go online, go on to social media,” Wang said.

He recalled having treated an 18-

year-old male student with extreme symptoms.

“When I saw him, he was unshaven, he had long hair, he was skinny, he hadn’t showered for days, he looked like a homeless man,” Wang told AFP. The boy came to blows with his father after he tried to take away the young man’s laptop computer.

After the father cut off Internet access in the house, desperation drove the boy to hang around neighbours’ homes trying to get a wireless connection.

He was eventually hospitalised, put on anti-depressants and received “a lot” of counselling, Wang said.

“We just needed to break the cycle.

He got better, he was discharged from the hospital and I saw him a few more times and he was okay.”

Social media fixation

Tan Hwee Sim, a consultant psychiatrist at The Resilienz Mind clinic in Singapore, noted that the symptoms exhibited by her young adult patients have changed over the years.

Obsession with online gaming was the main manifestation in the past, but addiction to social media and video downloading are now on the uptrend.

“Internet addiction as a disorder is not even listed in our latest psychiatric manual, it’s only listed in the appendix as a disorder that requires further study,” she said.

In terms of physical symptoms, more people are reporting “text neck” or “iNeck” pain, according to Tan Kian Hian, a consultant at the anaesthesiol-

ogy department of Singapore General Hospital.

“It is a commonly observed phenomenon that many people have their heads lowered and are now using their mobile devices constantly on the go, while queuing or even crossing the roads,” Tan told AFP. Singapore’s problem is not unique, with a number of countries setting up treatment centres for young Internet addicts, particularly in Asia where South Korea, China and Taiwan have moved to tackle the issue.

In South Korea, a government survey in 2013 estimated that nearly 20 percent of teenagers were addicted to smartphones.

China already has an estimated 300 Internet addiction centres, according to a report on state broadcaster CCTV’s website in February. It also cited a survey showing there may be more than 24 million young Chinese addicted to the Internet.

Now the junta has lifted the curfew, giving a green light for Bangkok’s red-light districts and other evening activities to roar back to life. For the first time in a month, Saturday night freedom returned to the Thai capital.

“This is a party city, that’s why we’re here,” said Dan Moore, a 40-year-old visitor from England who had arrived Saturday morning and planned to stay up all night to celebrate a friend’s bachelor party. He had flown in, just like the 1980s pop song says, for “One Night in Bangkok.”

Moore’s group started the night on one of the capital’s most infamous red-light streets, Soi Cowboy, where they toasted the curfew being lifted.

“As for what happens the rest of the night? Who knows. This is Bangkok,” said the groom-to-be, another Englishman, who asked to be identified just by his first name, Darren, to save his future marriage.

Bars featuring pole dancers are by no stretch the only nightlife in Bangkok, but they are the most notorious. The lifting of

the curfew on Friday was part of a more general campaign by the junta to “return happiness to the people” of this politically polarized country.

When the army staged the May 22 coup, saying it acted to end increasingly violent political turmoil, the generals’ first order of business was to impose the curfew. Initially set at 10 p.m., it gradually was eased to midnight, and already had been lifted in several of Thailand’s popular resort areas after complaints from the tourism industry.

Then the generals apparently realized that for many Thais and tourists in Bangkok, happiness means watching the World Cup. On Thursday, the junta engineered a last-minute deal with the World Cup’s exclusive broadcaster in Thailand to cancel its exclusivity on digital television and allow the country to watch the tournament’s 64 matches for free. The grand gesture, however, was incompatible with a curfew that prevented people from leaving home to watch the matches, which due to the time difference take place overnight in Thailand.

So on Friday night, the junta announced it was fully lifting the curfew, saying there was no longer a threat of violence and that tourism needed to be revived.

It struck some tourists as incongruous that all-night partying

was now allowed in a country still technically under martial law.

“You would never know this place is under military control,” said German backpacker Dustin Ratz, 23, who arrived Saturday morning and was mesmerized by the evening scene on Khao San Road. “I love Bangkok. This place is amazing. Let’s see if I still say that tomorrow morning.

DENPASAR - The Balinese animal health office has intensified efforts to control the population of stray dogs on the tourist island.

“The stray dog population increases by 2.5 million per year in Bali, and therefore, it should be controlled,” Head of the Balinese Animal Health Office Vet. Nata Kesuma noted on Wednesday.

Sterilization is one of the measures taken to control the stray dog population, he pointed out.

Bali has resolved to become rabies-free by the year 2015 in order to maintain its reputation as the world’s most famous resort island.

The local authorities have outlined five strategies to eradicate rabies, notably the establishment of rural cadres, vaccination, euthanization, rabies-carrier supervision,

and stray dog population control, Kesuma stated.

Over the past few years, Bali authorities have routinely carried out mass vaccination programs against rabies, targeting stray and domestic dogs.

The fifth mass vaccination program against rabies is part of the government’s effort to make Bali rabies-free and is being implemented since April 15 across the island, targeting 350 thousand stray dogs.

Officially launched in the Gunung Sari Village, Seririt, Buleleng District, where several dog bite cases were recently reported, the fifth mass vaccination program will be carried out until July 31.

The increasing number of stray dog population is a challenge to the mass vaccination program against rabies, Kesuma added.

CAIRO — Egypt’s top prosecutor referred 13 men to trial for attempted rape and assault of women during public rallies in Cairo’s iconic Tahrir square, the first implementation of tough new penalties against rampant sexual violence, the state news agency reported.

The speedy trial reflects a government push to address the issue, and comes less than a week after the swearing in of Egypt’s newly elected President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi. Harassment has long been a problem in Egypt, but assaults have become more frequent and gruesome over the past three years of turmoil.

AMLAPURA - Again a pilgrim on behalf of Ni Nyoman Pasti, 70, was bitten by vicious monkey when coming to pray at Lempuyang Luhur Temple, Abang. With the incident, at least 28 pilgrims including the oblation porter are reported to have been bitten by the vicious monkey, Thursday (Jun 12).

Pasti from Kerobokan (Denpasar) was participating in the meajar-ajar pilgrimage held by her clan temple with a total participant of about 100 pilgrims, including the victim’s daughter Ni Nyoman Astini and Wayan Budiasa, her son-in-law. The victim and her entourage had gone down from Lempuyang Luhur Temple. Incidentally, on that Thursday afternoon the Lempuyang Mountain was misty. Due to foggy and dark, the monkey was invisible. Pasti was approached by a monkey and it suddenly bit her. The first bite just exposed to her clothes. However, the second attack wounded her right leg to break her leg veins. The victim screamed and her blood splattered. Then, the victim was helped by local pecalang (customary security guard) and pilgrim escorts by carrying her down to parking area of Telaga Mas Temple. Arriving there, she was rushed by the Karangasem Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) to Emergency Room of Karangasem Hospital for immediate help.

But the victim’s family asked in order she could be referred to Sanglah Hospital, for the reason of proximity to family.

According to pilgrim escort or customary security guard, so far a total of 28 people had been bitten by monkeys. Chairman of the Lempuyang Temple development committee, I Wayan Putu Aryawan, said in Karangasem last Saturday that one of the oblation porters was also bitten by the vicious monkey.

He said that his party had made various efforts to overcome so as no pilgrims would be bitten by monkeys at Lempuyang.

Last month, the community held a nangluk merana (pest and disease prevention) ritual in conjunction with the inauguration at the temple. Besides, the temple supporting devotees and Purwayu village apparatus also assigned two pilgrim escorts. Both escorts had been equipped air gun as the hordes of monkeys were afraid of it. But the monkeys were also smart, they knew if the rifle was empty. When people or pilgrim escorts were carrying air gun, no monkeys showed up and.

Aryawan told if his party did not get any reports about the pilgrim who was bitten by monkey last Thursday. As information, he said, there was a group member of students from Denpasar was bitten by monkey on Thursday (Jun 12). Yen slips as BoJ calls for more reform

STOCKHOLM - The International Monetary Fund Friday urged Sweden to cool its booming real estate market, which is causing a high level of household debt, warning of an “increasing concern” of financial instability.

“There are six (types) of industries which are important to support the vision and mission of national industrial development,” he said at the forum group discussion on the

master plan of national industrial development on Saturday.

The six groups of industries are food industry, pharmaceutical, cosmetic and footwear industry, textile,

footwear and multifarious industry.

Transportation means industry, electronic and telematic industry, and power generation industry make up the six, he said.

“The types of key industries are related to domestic needs in the long run and we have the potential to develop them,” he said.

There are three main characteristics to create a strong industrialized

nation; first, strong, in-depth, sound and just national industrial structure; second, highly competitive industry; and third, a technologyand innovation-based industry, he said.

“Food, textile and footwear industry, pharmaceutical and health instrument industry and power generation industry are badly needed to meet domestic needs,” he said.

The same is also true with electronic and telematic industry and transportation means industry, which support connectivity among regions in the country, he said.

“The master plan of national industrial development gives businessmen certainty about the types of industries developed, support and policy needed, and other support from other ministries,” he said.

Ukraine vows to punish rebels who downed plane Associated Press Writer

NOVOHANNIVKA, Ukraine — Ukraine’s new president declared Sunday a day of mourning and vowed to punish those responsible after pro-Russia separatists shot down a Ukrainian military transport plane, killing all 49 crew and troops aboard. It was a bitter setback for the Ukrainian forces — the deadliest single incident yet in their escalating battle against an armed insurgency that the government, backed by the U.S., insists is supported by Russia.

The downing of the plane drew condemnation and concern from the White House, European leaders and U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon. Analysts said it could bring a renewed emphasis on increasing sanctions against Russia. “(This) will refocus attention on the fact that Russia does not seem to be doing very much to moderate the insurgency (or) the cross-border resupply of separatists,” said Timothy Ash, an analyst at Standard Bank PLC. “I would expect the focus to return to sanctions next week.”

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko spoke firmly to glum-faced security officials at a televised emergency meeting Saturday, scolding the head of the country’s SBU security service for “omissions” in measures to protect military aircraft. Poroshenko called for “a detailed analysis of the reasons” for the lapse and hinted that personnel changes were imminent.

His office said he vowed to punish “those responsible for the tragedy in Luhansk.”

In a conversation with French President Francois Hollande, Poroshenko expressed hope that the European Union would decide on further sanctions against Russia if what he called the illegal border crossings and the supply of weapons did not cease.

Nine crew and 40 troops were aboard the Il-76 troop transport when it went down early Saturday as it approached the airport at Luhansk, the Ukrainian prosecutor general’s office said.

The plane’s tail section and other pieces of scorched wreckage lay in a field near the village of Novohannivka, 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of Luhansk. An Associated Press reporter saw a dozen or more armed separatists inspecting the crash site.

Defense Ministry spokesman Bohdan Senyk said the rebels used anti-aircraft guns and a heavy machine gun to down the plane, while the prosecutor general’s office said rebels used an anti-aircraft missile.

Luhansk, a city near the border with Russia, is one of two eastern

areas where separatists have seized government buildings and declared independence. Ukrainian forces still control the Luhansk airport. In other fighting, five border guards were killed and seven wounded Saturday in the southern port of Mariupol when their column of vehicles was ambushed, the guards service said.

The U.S. government reiterated its support for Poroshenko’s government and rejected Russia’s statements that it was not arming the rebels. The U.S. said Russia had sent tanks and rocket launchers to the rebels, making sure the unmarked tanks were of a type not currently being used by Russian forces.

“We condemn the shooting down of the Ukrainian military plane and continue to be deeply concerned about the situation in eastern Ukraine, including by the fact that militant and separatist groups have received heavy weapons from Russia, including tanks, which is a significant escalation,” said White House spokeswoman Laura Lucas Magnuson.

BAGHDAD — The Islamic militant group that seized much of northern Iraq has posted photos that appear to show its fighters shooting dead dozens of captured Iraqi soldiers in a province north of the capital Baghdad.

The pictures on a militant website appear to show masked fighters of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or ISIL, loading the captives onto flatbed trucks before forcing them to lie face-down in a shallow ditch with their arms tied behind their backs. The final images appear to show the bodies of the captives soaked in blood after being shot.

Captions say the killings were to avenge the death of an ISIL commander, Abdul-Rahman al-Beilawy, whose death was reported by both the government and ISIL shortly before the al-Qaida splinter group captured Iraq’s second largest city Mosul and Saddam Hussein’s hometown of Tikrit in a lightning offensive. Iraq’s top military spokesman, Lt. Gen. Qassim al-Moussawi, confirmed the photos’ authenticity on Sunday and said he was aware of cases of mass murder of captured Iraqi soldiers in areas held by ISIL. U.N. human rights chief Navi Pillay warned on Friday of “murder of all kinds” and other war crimes in Iraq, and said the number killed in recent days may run into the hundreds, while the wounded could approach 1,000. Speaking in Geneva, she said her office has received reports that militants rounded up and killed Iraqi soldiers as well as 17 civilians in a single street in Mosul.

Her office heard of “summary executions and extrajudicial killings” after ISIL militants overran Iraqi cities and towns, the statement said.

Most of the soldiers who appear in the pictures are in civilian clothes.

Some are shown wearing military uniforms underneath, indicating they may have hastily disguised themselves as civilians to try to escape.

Many soldiers and policemen left their uniforms and equipment behind as the militants swept into Mosul, Tikrit and surrounding areas.

The captions did not provide a date or location, but al-Moussawi said the killings took place in Salahuddin province, the capital of which is Tikrit.

Airstrikes in NW Pakistan kill about 100 militants Associated Press Writer

ISLAMABAD — Pakistani military jets pounded militant hideouts in the northwestern tribal region bordering Afghanistan early Sunday morning, officials said, killing as many as 100 militants in the second strike on the region since a deadly attack on the Karachi airport a week ago.

The Pakistani government has been under pressure to combat the resilient insurgency that has plagued the country for years after the shocking attack on the country’s busiest airport that left 36 people dead, including 10 assailants. Government efforts that started months ago to negotiate with the militants appeared to be going nowhere and the airport violence has made negotiations even less likely to succeed.

Pakistani air force jets targeted eight militant hideouts in the North Waziristan tribal area, two intelligence officials said. Many of the dead were believed to be Uzbeks and other foreign fighters, they said.

One of those killed was Abu Abdul Rehman al-Maani, who is believed to have helped orchestrate the five-hour airport siege last Sunday, said two other officials. Uzbek fighters and the Pakistani Taliban both claimed responsibility for the attack on Jinnah International Airport, and the Pakistani Taliban said the two had worked together to carry it out, marking a disturbing increase of militant groups working together.

When the jets struck, the militants had been gathered to discuss a deadline given by authorities for militants to leave the area, said two of the Pakistani officials.

All the officials did not want to be identified because they were not authorized to speak to the media. The information could not be independently verified. The tribal areas are remote, dangerous and difficult for journalists to access.

INDONESIA Ex-general a winner in proxy TV battle Reuters

JAKARTA - If Indonesia’s presidential election were to be decided by favourable coverage on its television channels, ex-general Prabowo Subianto would be in the driver’s seat and frontrunner Joko “Jokowi” Widodo would trail far behind. Jokowi is ahead in opinion polls but Prabowo is catching up with less than a month to go for the July 9 election, according to surveys.

But the surveys say about 40 percent of the electorate is undecided and television channels could decide, or at least heavily influence, who will lead the world’s thirdlargest democracy for the next five years. “The real war is to win the 41 percent of voters that are still undecided. In this case, the role of the media will be crucial,” said Amir Effendi Siregar, the head of pr2media, a private media watchdog group.

The viewership numbers heavily favour Prabowo - two media moguls who control nearly half of Indonesia’s TV audience are firmly with the former special forces chief.

Aburizal Bakrie, the head of the Golkar party which has thrown its weight behind Prabowo, owns media group PT Visi Media Asia and its two free-to-air nationwide television stations, ANTV and TVOne.

Hary Tanoesoedibjo, a member of Prabowo’s inner circle of advisers, owns the Media Nusantara Citra group and its three national TV stations RCTI, MNCTV and Global TV. The other presidential hopeful, Jokowi, is backed by media tycoon Surya Paloh, chairman of the small National Democrat party that is part of his alliance, and owner of leading news channel MetroTV. “The use of media in political campaigns this year compared to other elections is much more intense and the bias is more obvious because TV owners are involved,” said Siregar, adding that the owners could use their businesses as bargaining chips to further political ambitions.

Paloh’s MetroTV however has just 3 percent of the country’s viewership, compared to 44 percent for the five stations that are pro-Prabowo, according to Nielsen

Indonesia.

According to the market research group, Indonesia’s 11 privatelyowned national TV stations reach 95 percent of the country’s 240 million people. Newspapers reach only 12 percent.

Most of Indonesia’s people live on the islands of Java and Sumatra, but the rest are scattered across thousands of islands spread over 5,000 km (3,000 miles). The role of mass media in political campaigns, especially in close contests, is crucial.

“It is definitely having an impact on the election. In terms of TV stations, Prabowo’s camp has much more than Jokowi’s,” said Tobias Basuki, a political analyst at think tank CSIS. “We can’t say exactly how much of an impact it will have, but the election (media watchdog) is not able to force TV stations to be objective.”

Poor swap garbage for health care Agence France-Presse

MALANG - Mahmud hauls bags full of rubbish to the small, dilapidated clinic next to a busy road on Indonesia’s main island of Java several times a month.

There he exchanges grubby cardboard boxes, plastic bottles and other garbage for something he would struggle to afford otherwise -- medical treatment.

“I know I can sell my garbage here so I keep it,” said the 60-year-old, who like many Indonesians goes by one name. “I used to throw everything onto the street but I have started telling myself that actually the garbage is useful.”

Mahmud, who suffers from arthritis, is one of many members of the Klinik Bumi Ayu in Malang who regularly bring in rubbish in exchange for check-ups and medicine.

There are five such centres in the city that are part of a scheme dubbed “Garbage Clinical Insurance” by its 24-year-old founder Gamal Albinsaid, offering treatment and advice for free to some of the country’s poorest.

As Southeast Asia’s biggest economy struggles to spread the riches earned in recent years to the poorest in society, the clinics are a creative attempt to fill the gaps left by a threadbare welfare system.

The government this year began rolling out what is supposed to be a universal healthcare system across the sprawling archipelago of 250 million people.

Once fully implemented by 2019, it is expected to cost around $15 billion a year -- but critics say it is underfunded and Indonesia lacks enough well-trained medical staff.

In a country where half the population lives on $2 a day, spreading the gains from a sustained economic boom has been in sharp focus recently, with contenders running in July presidential elections pledging to better the lot of society’s underprivileged.

Beyond healthcare, Albinsaid’s initiative has had another notable benefit -- it has created an army of cleaners to clear the streets in and around Malang, which like many cities in fast-growing Indonesia struggles to keep litter from piling up.

Albinsaid decided to open a first centre in 2010 after hearing the story of a young daughter of a rubbish collector who died after contracting diarrhoea. Her family could not afford treatment.

That clinic failed to get off the ground, but in 2013, Albinsaid and four others got together the funding to open five centres in Malang, and they have so far been doing well.

His achievements were recognised in January when he was awarded the Unilever Young Sustainability Entrepreneur Prize by Britain’s Prince Charles at a cer-

emony in London, which included 50,000 euros ($70,000) in financial support and mentoring.

Trash for treatment

People who want treatment at the clinics bring in rubbish once a week on Saturdays. They must collect 10,000 rupiah (90 US cents) worth of garbage every month to be a member of the scheme, and this qualifies them for two visits a month.

Different types of rubbish are worth different amounts, according to Albinsaid.

Organic waste can be turned in to fertiliser which is sold to farmers, and other materials, such as plastic and metal, are bought by rubbish collectors who process it and sell it on.

The Klinik Bumi Ayu is staffed by two doctors, one nurse and two pharmacists and is open daily in the afternoons. Most of the patients are agricultural workers who toil in the rice paddies surrounding Malang, in eastern Java.

On a recent Saturday at the centre, about 10 patients were waiting to be seen by doctors.

A woman held her two-year-old daughter close, wrapped in a sarong, the young girl’s eyes puffed up and red. After a quick examination, a doctor diagnosed her with a severe bout of diarrhoea and sent her away with some medicine.

Efriko Septananda, a doctor at the clinic, said common problems people came in with include high blood pressure, diabetes, runny noses and gastroenteritis.

Most earn between 500,000 and one million rupiah a month ($44-88), and would struggle to get good medical treatment if the clinic did not provide it in exchange for rubbish, he said.

Free public healthcare does exist in Malang and other parts of Indonesia.

But getting access to it is a complicated, highly bureaucratic process, according to Albinsaid.

For Mahmud, treatment at the centre has helped ease his arthritis.

“Before I did not feel well, especially when I had to bend over to pray,” he said.

“But now I can pray normally.”

More than 90 percent of Indonesia’s population describe themselves as Muslim.

Albinsaid, who is training to be a doctor but does not treat patients at the clinics himself, said the system has been successful as only 10 to 15 percent of people who bring in garbage use the services.

This leaves enough money to run the centre and fund its development.

He hopes to expand the scheme across Indonesia with clinics planned in three other cities so far, and the government has also taken an interest in getting involved.

Rosberg says second place not good enough Nico Rosberg thinks extending his Formula 1 championship lead in Canada was not good enough, because Mercedes should not have allowed anyone else to win in the first place. could prove crucial in what appears to be a straight head-to-head title challenge.

But Rosberg wants Mercedes to act on the lessons of Canada, and ensure that it suffers no repeat issues. “In hindsight, it was massive damage limitation coming second.

It was lots of points and it was a decent day.

“But for the team it sucks, because our ambition is to do much better. To have reliability problems like that is not good.

“We need to be bullet proof and it is a work in progress. It is the first problem I have had - because we have been good with reliability. “We have been good with reliability before, but we need to keep on going now and make sure it is 100 per cent - which of course is never easy.”

NEW YORK — Chris Algieri won the WBO junior welterweight title, outpointing Ruslan Provodinkov in a split decision Saturday night at Barclays Center. Algieri (20-0) received winning scores of 114-112 from two judges, with the third judge had it 117-109 for Provodinkov (23-3).

Algieri’s nose bled after the fifth round and the former kickboxer’s right eye swelled and seemed to hinder his sight late in the fight. He absorbed everything that Provodinkov threw at him and won the fight after getting up twice in a short span during the first round.

Provodinkov lost his first title defense since stopping Mike Alvarado in the 10th round last October and also lost for the second time in three fights. His other loss in the last 15 months was a controversial decision against Timothy Bradley.

It appeared early that Provodinkov might dominate the fight. He initially took down Algieri with a jab and then again with a left hook that caused swelling in the right eye. After that, Provodinkov did not come close to getting another knockdown as he struggled against Algieri, who frequently moved around the ring.

On the undercard, Demetrius Andrade (21-0) retained his WBO light middleweight by stopping England’s Brian Rose (25-2-1) at 1:19 of the seventh round. Andrade dominated the fight by dropping Rose in the first round with a left hand to the chin and again in the third with a right hook.

Mexico unlikely to be overawed against favourites Brazil Reuters

SAO PAULO - World Cup favourites Brazil will be expected to defeat Mexico in the second round of Group A matches in Fortaleza on Tuesday but their Latin neighbours have no reason to feel overawed. The Mexicans have won big matches against Brazil before, beating them 4-3 in the final of the Confederations Cup in 1999 and more recently in the Olympic final in London.

Although that game was not a full international, the match featured several players expected to line up in Fortaleza including Neymar, Oscar and Thiago Silva for Brazil, and Oribe Peralta, the striker whose brace gave Mexico a 2-1 victory. It gives Brazil

pause for thought as they seek their 11th consecutive win.

“We know that Mexico are a good team, they always give Brazil a hard time and it won’t be any different when we play in the next match,” Oscar, one of the stars of the 3-1 opening day win over Croatia, said at the team’s base camp on Saturday. “Mexico are good coming forward and they are very fast on the counter attack,” the Chelsea midfielder said. “The training we are going to do this week ahead of the Mexico game will be different from the training we did before facing Croatia. Mexico play totally differently from Croatia.”

Mexico will also be encouraged by a rain-sodden 1-0 win over Cameroon on Friday when

they received fantastic support from their travelling fans. The home side, however, have won 22 of the 38 previous encounters including the most recent match almost exactly a year ago in the same stadium in the Confederations Cup when Brazil romped home more comfortably than the 2-0 scoreline suggests.

MANAUS, Brazil — England’s physiotherapist required treatment himself after being injured while celebrating a goal during Saturday’s World Cup game against Italy.

Gary Lewin dislocated an ankle after Daniel Sturridge equalized for England during the first half in Manaus as the England backroom staff celebrated on the bench.

Lewin received treatment on the pitch before being carried off on a stretcher and taken to a Manaus hospital. He will now return to England.

England coach Roy Hodgson says “that was a very sad moment for us. In celebrating the goal he jumped up, landed on a water bottle and dislocated his ankle.”

England, which lost 2-1, has another physiotherapist with the squad, Steve Kemp.

On an action-packed day across Brazil, England against Italy in the searing heat and humidity of Manaus had top billing, and it lived up to the hype in a thrilling contest in keeping with this tournament’s emphasis on attacking football.

Claudio Marchisio fired Italy ahead after 35 minutes when England were wrong-footed by an Andrea Pirlo dummy, but Daniel Sturridge levelled within three minutes after Wayne Rooney picked him out with a perfect left-wing cross. Mario Balotelli, who had a clever lob cleared off the line at the end of the first half, made it 2-1 five minutes into the second when he took advantage of ragged defending to head home.

England pressed for an equaliser, but Italy’s defence grew in authority as the match wore on and the Azzurri secured the three points. “Up until just a few years ago England relied on long balls, but they are now a skilled team with excellent triangular passing,” said Italy coach Cesare Prandelli.

Mexico unlikely to be overawed against favourites Brazil Reuters

SAO PAULO - World Cup favourites Brazil will be expected to defeat Mexico in the second round of Group A matches in Fortaleza on Tuesday but their Latin neighbours have no reason to feel overawed. The Mexicans have won big matches against Brazil before, beating them 4-3 in the final of the Confederations Cup in 1999 and more recently in the Olympic final in London.

Although that game was not a full international, the match featured several players expected to line up in Fortaleza including Neymar, Oscar and Thiago Silva for Brazil, and Oribe Peralta, the striker whose brace gave Mexico a 2-1 victory. It gives Brazil

pause for thought as they seek their 11th consecutive win.

“We know that Mexico are a good team, they always give Brazil a hard time and it won’t be any different when we play in the next match,” Oscar, one of the stars of the 3-1 opening day win over Croatia, said at the team’s base camp on Saturday. “Mexico are good coming forward and they are very fast on the counter attack,” the Chelsea midfielder said. “The training we are going to do this week ahead of the Mexico game will be different from the training we did before facing Croatia. Mexico play totally differently from Croatia.”

Mexico will also be encouraged by a rain-sodden 1-0 win over Cameroon on Friday when

they received fantastic support from their travelling fans. The home side, however, have won 22 of the 38 previous encounters including the most recent match almost exactly a year ago in the same stadium in the Confederations Cup when Brazil romped home more comfortably than the 2-0 scoreline suggests.

Both teams - and fans the world over - will also be watching the referee almost as closely as the players. Rosberg says second place not good enough Nico Rosberg thinks extending his Formula 1 championship lead in Canada was not good enough, because Mercedes should not have allowed anyone else to win in the first place. The German car manufacturer’s run of six consecutive victories came to an end in Montreal when it suffered an energy recovery system failure on both cars, forcing Lewis Hamilton out and hampering Rosberg’s speed.

The points he earned for that have given him a 22-point advantage over Hamilton in the drivers’ standings - and

could prove crucial in what appears to be a straight head-to-head title challenge.

But Rosberg wants Mercedes to act on the lessons of Canada, and ensure that it suffers no repeat issues. “In hindsight, it was massive damage limitation coming second.

It was lots of points and it was a decent day.

“But for the team it sucks, because our ambition is to do much better. To have reliability problems like that is not good.

“We need to be bullet proof and it is a work in progress. It is the first problem I have had - because we have been good with reliability. “We have been good with reliability before, but we need to keep on going now and make sure it is 100 per cent - which of course is never easy.”

NEW YORK — Chris Algieri won the WBO junior welterweight title, outpointing Ruslan Provodinkov in a split decision Saturday night at Barclays Center. Algieri (20-0) received winning scores of 114-112 from two judges, with the third judge had it 117-109 for Provodinkov (23-3).

Algieri’s nose bled after the fifth round and the former kickboxer’s right eye swelled and seemed to hinder his sight late in the fight. He absorbed everything that Provodinkov threw at him and won the fight after getting up twice in a short span during the first round.

Provodinkov lost his first title defense since stopping Mike Alvarado in the 10th round last October and also lost for the second time in three fights. His other loss in the last 15 months was a controversial decision against Timothy Bradley.

It appeared early that Provodinkov might dominate the fight. He initially took down Algieri with a jab and then again with a left hook that caused swelling in the right eye. After that, Provodinkov did not come close to getting another knockdown as he struggled against Algieri, who frequently moved around the ring.

On the undercard, Demetrius Andrade (21-0) retained his WBO light middleweight by stopping England’s Brian Rose (25-2-1) at 1:19 of the seventh round. Andrade dominated the fight by dropping Rose in the first round with a left hand to the chin and again in the third with a right hook.

Rose, making his American debut, lost for the first time in 12 fights. Shortly after his nose was bloodied in the sixth, referee Michael Griffin decided to stop the fight after seeing Rose’s corner walk up the steps of the ring.

Earlier, Brooklyn native Heather Hardy (10-0) won the first women’s fight at Barclays Center by getting a split decision over Jackie Trivillino (9-8-3). Ukraine vows to punish rebels who downed plane Associated Press Writer

NOVOHANNIVKA, Ukraine — Ukraine’s new president declared Sunday a day of mourning and vowed to punish those responsible after pro-Russia separatists shot down a Ukrainian military transport plane, killing all 49 crew and troops aboard. It was a bitter setback for the Ukrainian forces — the deadliest single incident yet in their escalating battle against an armed insurgency that the government, backed by the U.S., insists is supported by Russia.

The downing of the plane drew condemnation and concern from the White House, European leaders and U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon. Analysts said it could bring a renewed emphasis on increasing sanctions against Russia. “(This) will refocus attention on the fact that Russia does not seem to be doing very much to moderate the insurgency (or) the cross-border resupply of separatists,” said Timothy Ash, an analyst at Standard Bank PLC. “I would expect the focus to return to sanctions next week.”

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko spoke firmly to glum-faced security officials at a televised emergency meeting Saturday, scolding the head of the country’s SBU security service for “omissions” in measures to protect military aircraft. Poroshenko called for “a detailed analysis of the reasons” for the lapse and hinted that personnel changes were imminent.

His office said he vowed to punish “those responsible for the tragedy in Luhansk.”

In a conversation with French President Francois Hollande, Poroshenko expressed hope that the European Union would decide on further sanctions against Russia if what he called the illegal border crossings and the supply of weapons did not cease.

Nine crew and 40 troops were aboard the Il-76 troop transport when it went down early Saturday as it approached the airport at Luhansk, the Ukrainian prosecutor general’s office said.

The plane’s tail section and other pieces of scorched wreckage lay in a field near the village of Novohannivka, 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of Luhansk. An Associated Press reporter saw a dozen or more armed separatists inspecting the crash site.

Defense Ministry spokesman Bohdan Senyk said the rebels used anti-aircraft guns and a heavy machine gun to down the plane, while the prosecutor general’s office said rebels used an anti-aircraft missile.

Luhansk, a city near the border with Russia, is one of two eastern

areas where separatists have seized government buildings and declared independence. Ukrainian forces still control the Luhansk airport. In other fighting, five border guards were killed and seven wounded Saturday in the southern port of Mariupol when their column of vehicles was ambushed, the guards service said.

The U.S. government reiterated its support for Poroshenko’s government and rejected Russia’s statements that it was not arming the rebels. The U.S. said Russia had sent tanks and rocket launchers to the rebels, making sure the unmarked tanks were of a type not currently being used by Russian forces.

“We condemn the shooting down of the Ukrainian military plane and continue to be deeply concerned about the situation in eastern Ukraine, including by the fact that militant and separatist groups have received heavy weapons from Russia, including tanks, which is a significant escalation,” said White House spokeswoman Laura Lucas Magnuson.

BAGHDAD — The Islamic militant group that seized much of northern Iraq has posted photos that appear to show its fighters shooting dead dozens of captured Iraqi soldiers in a province north of the capital Baghdad.

The pictures on a militant website appear to show masked fighters of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or ISIL, loading the captives onto flatbed trucks before forcing them to lie face-down in a shallow ditch with their arms tied behind their backs. The final images appear to show the bodies of the captives soaked in blood after being shot.

Captions say the killings were to avenge the death of an ISIL commander, Abdul-Rahman al-Beilawy, whose death was reported by both the government and ISIL shortly before the al-Qaida splinter group captured Iraq’s second largest city Mosul and Saddam Hussein’s hometown of Tikrit in a lightning offensive. Iraq’s top military spokesman, Lt. Gen. Qassim al-Moussawi, confirmed the photos’ authenticity on Sunday and said he was aware of cases of mass murder of captured Iraqi soldiers in areas held by ISIL. U.N. human rights chief Navi Pillay warned on Friday of “murder of all kinds” and other war crimes in Iraq, and said the number killed in recent days may run into the hundreds, while the wounded could approach 1,000. Speaking in Geneva, she said her office has received reports that militants rounded up and killed Iraqi soldiers as well as 17 civilians in a single street in Mosul.

Her office heard of “summary executions and extrajudicial killings” after ISIL militants overran Iraqi cities and towns, the statement said.

Most of the soldiers who appear in the pictures are in civilian clothes.

Some are shown wearing military uniforms underneath, indicating they may have hastily disguised themselves as civilians to try to escape.

Many soldiers and policemen left their uniforms and equipment behind as the militants swept into Mosul, Tikrit and surrounding areas.

The captions did not provide a date or location, but al-Moussawi said the killings took place in Salahuddin province, the capital of which is Tikrit.

Airstrikes in NW Pakistan kill about 100 militants Associated Press Writer

ISLAMABAD — Pakistani military jets pounded militant hideouts in the northwestern tribal region bordering Afghanistan early Sunday morning, officials said, killing as many as 100 militants in the second strike on the region since a deadly attack on the Karachi airport a week ago.

The Pakistani government has been under pressure to combat the resilient insurgency that has plagued the country for years after the shocking attack on the country’s busiest airport that left 36 people dead, including 10 assailants. Government efforts that started months ago to negotiate with the militants appeared to be going nowhere and the airport violence has made negotiations even less likely to succeed.

Pakistani air force jets targeted eight militant hideouts in the North Waziristan tribal area, two intelligence officials said. Many of the dead were believed to be Uzbeks and other foreign fighters, they said.

One of those killed was Abu Abdul Rehman al-Maani, who is believed to have helped orchestrate the five-hour airport siege last Sunday, said two other officials. Uzbek fighters and the Pakistani Taliban both claimed responsibility for the attack on Jinnah International Airport, and the Pakistani Taliban said the two had worked together to carry it out, marking a disturbing increase of militant groups working together.

When the jets struck, the militants had been gathered to discuss a deadline given by authorities for militants to leave the area, said two of the Pakistani officials.

All the officials did not want to be identified because they were not authorized to speak to the media. The information could not be independently verified. The tribal areas are remote, dangerous and difficult for journalists to access.

INDONESIA Ex-general a winner in proxy TV battle Reuters

JAKARTA - If Indonesia’s presidential election were to be decided by favourable coverage on its television channels, ex-general Prabowo Subianto would be in the driver’s seat and frontrunner Joko “Jokowi” Widodo would trail far behind. Jokowi is ahead in opinion polls but Prabowo is catching up with less than a month to go for the July 9 election, according to surveys.

But the surveys say about 40 percent of the electorate is undecided and television channels could decide, or at least heavily influence, who will lead the world’s thirdlargest democracy for the next five years. “The real war is to win the 41 percent of voters that are still undecided. In this case, the role of the media will be crucial,” said Amir Effendi Siregar, the head of pr2media, a private media watchdog group.

The viewership numbers heavily favour Prabowo - two media moguls who control nearly half of Indonesia’s TV audience are firmly with the former special forces chief.

Aburizal Bakrie, the head of the Golkar party which has thrown its weight behind Prabowo, owns media group PT Visi Media Asia and its two free-to-air nationwide television stations, ANTV and TVOne.

Hary Tanoesoedibjo, a member of Prabowo’s inner circle of advisers, owns the Media Nusantara Citra group and its three national TV stations RCTI, MNCTV and Global TV. The other presidential hopeful, Jokowi, is backed by media tycoon Surya Paloh, chairman of the small National Democrat party that is part of his alliance, and owner of leading news channel MetroTV. “The use of media in political campaigns this year compared to other elections is much more intense and the bias is more obvious because TV owners are involved,” said Siregar, adding that the owners could use their businesses as bargaining chips to further political ambitions.

Paloh’s MetroTV however has just 3 percent of the country’s viewership, compared to 44 percent for the five stations that are pro-Prabowo, according to Nielsen

Indonesia.

According to the market research group, Indonesia’s 11 privatelyowned national TV stations reach 95 percent of the country’s 240 million people. Newspapers reach only 12 percent.

Most of Indonesia’s people live on the islands of Java and Sumatra, but the rest are scattered across thousands of islands spread over 5,000 km (3,000 miles). The role of mass media in political campaigns, especially in close contests, is crucial.

“It is definitely having an impact on the election. In terms of TV stations, Prabowo’s camp has much more than Jokowi’s,” said Tobias Basuki, a political analyst at think tank CSIS. “We can’t say exactly how much of an impact it will have, but the election (media watchdog) is not able to force TV stations to be objective.”

Poor swap garbage for health care Agence France-Presse

MALANG - Mahmud hauls bags full of rubbish to the small, dilapidated clinic next to a busy road on Indonesia’s main island of Java several times a month.

There he exchanges grubby cardboard boxes, plastic bottles and other garbage for something he would struggle to afford otherwise -- medical treatment.

“I know I can sell my garbage here so I keep it,” said the 60-year-old, who like many Indonesians goes by one name. “I used to throw everything onto the street but I have started telling myself that actually the garbage is useful.”

Mahmud, who suffers from arthritis, is one of many members of the Klinik Bumi Ayu in Malang who regularly bring in rubbish in exchange for check-ups and medicine.

There are five such centres in the city that are part of a scheme dubbed “Garbage Clinical Insurance” by its 24-year-old founder Gamal Albinsaid, offering treatment and advice for free to some of the country’s poorest.

As Southeast Asia’s biggest economy struggles to spread the riches earned in recent years to the poorest in society, the clinics are a creative attempt to fill the gaps left by a threadbare welfare system.

The government this year began rolling out what is supposed to be a universal healthcare system across the sprawling archipelago of 250 million people.

Once fully implemented by 2019, it is expected to cost around $15 billion a year -- but critics say it is underfunded and Indonesia lacks enough well-trained medical staff.

In a country where half the population lives on $2 a day, spreading the gains from a sustained economic boom has been in sharp focus recently, with contenders running in July presidential elections pledging to better the lot of society’s underprivileged.

Beyond healthcare, Albinsaid’s initiative has had another notable benefit -- it has created an army of cleaners to clear the streets in and around Malang, which like many cities in fast-growing Indonesia struggles to keep litter from piling up.

Albinsaid decided to open a first centre in 2010 after hearing the story of a young daughter of a rubbish collector who died after contracting diarrhoea. Her family could not afford treatment.

That clinic failed to get off the ground, but in 2013, Albinsaid and four others got together the funding to open five centres in Malang, and they have so far been doing well.

His achievements were recognised in January when he was awarded the Unilever Young Sustainability Entrepreneur Prize by Britain’s Prince Charles at a cer-

emony in London, which included 50,000 euros ($70,000) in financial support and mentoring.

Trash for treatment

People who want treatment at the clinics bring in rubbish once a week on Saturdays. They must collect 10,000 rupiah (90 US cents) worth of garbage every month to be a member of the scheme, and this qualifies them for two visits a month.

Different types of rubbish are worth different amounts, according to Albinsaid.

Organic waste can be turned in to fertiliser which is sold to farmers, and other materials, such as plastic and metal, are bought by rubbish collectors who process it and sell it on.

The Klinik Bumi Ayu is staffed by two doctors, one nurse and two pharmacists and is open daily in the afternoons. Most of the patients are agricultural workers who toil in the rice paddies surrounding Malang, in eastern Java.

On a recent Saturday at the centre, about 10 patients were waiting to be seen by doctors.

A woman held her two-year-old daughter close, wrapped in a sarong, the young girl’s eyes puffed up and red. After a quick examination, a doctor diagnosed her with a severe bout of diarrhoea and sent her away with some medicine.

Efriko Septananda, a doctor at the clinic, said common problems people came in with include high blood pressure, diabetes, runny noses and gastroenteritis.

Most earn between 500,000 and one million rupiah a month ($44-88), and would struggle to get good medical treatment if the clinic did not provide it in exchange for rubbish, he said.

Free public healthcare does exist in Malang and other parts of Indonesia.

But getting access to it is a complicated, highly bureaucratic process, according to Albinsaid.

For Mahmud, treatment at the centre has helped ease his arthritis.

“Before I did not feel well, especially when I had to bend over to pray,” he said.

“But now I can pray normally.”

More than 90 percent of Indonesia’s population describe themselves as Muslim.

Albinsaid, who is training to be a doctor but does not treat patients at the clinics himself, said the system has been successful as only 10 to 15 percent of people who bring in garbage use the services.

This leaves enough money to run the centre and fund its development.

He hopes to expand the scheme across Indonesia with clinics planned in three other cities so far, and the government has also taken an interest in getting involved.

“The types of key industries are related to domestic needs in the long run and we have the potential to develop them,” he said.

The victim and her entourage had gone down from Lempuyang Luhur Temple. Incidentally, on that Thursday afternoon the Lempuyang Mountain was misty. Due to foggy and dark, the monkey was invisible. Pasti was approached by a monkey and it suddenly bit her. The first bite just exposed to her clothes. However, the second attack wounded her right leg to break her leg veins. The victim screamed and her blood splattered. Then, the victim was helped by local pecalang (customary security guard) and pilgrim escorts by carrying her down to parking area of Telaga Mas Temple. Arriving there, she was rushed by the Karangasem Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) to Emergency Room of Karangasem Hospital for immediate help.

But the victim’s family asked in order she could be referred to Sanglah Hospital, for the reason of proximity to family.

According to pilgrim escort or customary security guard, so far a total of 28 people had been bitten by monkeys. Chairman of the Lempuyang Temple development committee, I Wayan Putu Aryawan, said in Karangasem last Saturday that one of the oblation porters was also bitten by the vicious monkey.

He said that his party had made various efforts to overcome so as no pilgrims would be bitten by monkeys at Lempuyang.

Last month, the community held a nangluk merana (pest and disease prevention) ritual in conjunction with the inauguration at the temple. Besides, the temple supporting devotees and Purwayu village apparatus also assigned two pilgrim escorts. Both escorts had been equipped air gun as the hordes of monkeys were afraid of it. But the monkeys were also smart, they knew if the rifle was empty. When people or pilgrim escorts were carrying air gun, no monkeys showed up and.

Aryawan told if his party did not get any reports about the pilgrim who was bitten by monkey last Thursday. Singapore grapples with smartphone addiction

SINGAPORE - Easily distracted? Can’t be separated from your smartphone? Constantly checking your device for no real reason? Chances are you’re an addict -- and you may even need professional help.

Psychiatrists in Singapore are pushing for medical authorities to formally recognise addiction to the Internet and digital devices as a disorder, joining other countries around the world in addressing a growing problem.

Singapore and Hong Kong top an Asia-Pacific region that boasts some of the world’s highest smartphone penetration rates, according to a 2013 report by media monitoring firm Nielsen.

Some 87 percent of Singapore’s 5.4 million population own smartphones -- as Internet-capable phones with cameras are popularly known.

In the United States, where there are similar concerns about the impact

of smartphones on society, a 65 percent penetration rate would not even make the top five in Asia Pacific.

Singaporeans also spend on average 38 minutes per session on Facebook, almost twice as long as Americans, according to a study by Experian, a global information services company.

Adrian Wang, a psychiatrist at the upmarket Gleneagles Medical Centre, said digital addiction should be classified as a psychiatric disorder.

“Patients come for stress anxietyrelated problems, but their coping mechanism is to go online, go on to social media,” Wang said.

He recalled having treated an 18-

year-old male student with extreme symptoms.

“When I saw him, he was unshaven, he had long hair, he was skinny, he hadn’t showered for days, he looked like a homeless man,” Wang told AFP. The boy came to blows with his father after he tried to take away the young man’s laptop computer.

After the father cut off Internet access in the house, desperation drove the boy to hang around neighbours’ homes trying to get a wireless connection.

He was eventually hospitalised, put on anti-depressants and received “a lot” of counselling, Wang said.

“We just needed to break the cycle.

He got better, he was discharged from the hospital and I saw him a few more times and he was okay.”

Social media fixation

Tan Hwee Sim, a consultant psychiatrist at The Resilienz Mind clinic in Singapore, noted that the symptoms exhibited by her young adult patients have changed over the years.

Obsession with online gaming was the main manifestation in the past, but addiction to social media and video downloading are now on the uptrend.

“Internet addiction as a disorder is not even listed in our latest psychiatric manual, it’s only listed in the appendix as a disorder that requires further study,” she said.

In terms of physical symptoms, more people are reporting “text neck” or “iNeck” pain, according to Tan Kian Hian, a consultant at the anaesthesiol-

ogy department of Singapore General Hospital.

“It is a commonly observed phenomenon that many people have their heads lowered and are now using their mobile devices constantly on the go, while queuing or even crossing the roads,” Tan told AFP. Singapore’s problem is not unique, with a number of countries setting up treatment centres for young Internet addicts, particularly in Asia where South Korea, China and Taiwan have moved to tackle the issue.

BANGKOK — The generals who seized power in Thailand disrupted one of the country’s most lucrative industries — the go-go bars that were forced to close early because of a curfew.

Now the junta has lifted the curfew, giving a green light for Bangkok’s red-light districts and other evening activities to roar back to life. For the first time in a month, Saturday night freedom returned to the Thai capital.

“This is a party city, that’s why we’re here,” said Dan Moore, a 40-year-old visitor from England who had arrived Saturday morning and planned to stay up all night to celebrate a friend’s bachelor party. He had flown in, just like the 1980s pop song says, for “One Night in Bangkok.”

Moore’s group started the night on one of the capital’s most infamous red-light streets, Soi Cowboy, where they toasted the curfew being lifted.

“As for what happens the rest of the night? Who knows. This is Bangkok,” said the groom-to-be, another Englishman, who asked to be identified just by his first name, Darren, to save his future marriage.

Bars featuring pole dancers are by no stretch the only nightlife in Bangkok, but they are the most notorious. The lifting of

the curfew on Friday was part of a more general campaign by the junta to “return happiness to the people” of this politically polarized country.

When the army staged the May 22 coup, saying it acted to end increasingly violent political turmoil, the generals’ first order of business was to impose the curfew. Initially set at 10 p.m., it gradually was eased to midnight, and already had been lifted in several of Thailand’s popular resort areas after complaints from the tourism industry.

Then the generals apparently realized that for many Thais and tourists in Bangkok, happiness means watching the World Cup. On Thursday, the junta engineered a last-minute deal with the World Cup’s exclusive broadcaster in Thailand to cancel its exclusivity on digital television and allow the country to watch the tournament’s 64 matches for free. The grand gesture, however, was incompatible with a curfew that prevented people from leaving home to watch the matches, which due to the time difference take place overnight in Thailand.

So on Friday night, the junta announced it was fully lifting the curfew, saying there was no longer a threat of violence and that tourism needed to be revived.

Asked how he planned to spend the night, Ward said, “I’m going to try that in a bit,” pointing to a woman selling $3 doses of balloons filled with nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, to tourists.

It struck some tourists as incongruous that all-night partying

was now allowed in a country still technically under martial law.

“You would never know this place is under military control,” said German backpacker Dustin Ratz, 23, who arrived Saturday morning and was mesmerized by the evening scene on Khao San Road. “I love Bangkok. This place is amazing. Let’s see if I still say that tomorrow morning.

But tonight, it’s amazing.”

DENPASAR - The Balinese animal health office has intensified efforts to control the population of stray dogs on the tourist island.

“The stray dog population increases by 2.5 million per year in Bali, and therefore, it should be controlled,” Head of the Balinese Animal Health Office Vet. Nata Kesuma noted on Wednesday.

Sterilization is one of the measures taken to control the stray dog population, he pointed out.

Bali has resolved to become rabies-free by the year 2015 in order to maintain its reputation as the world’s most famous resort island.

The local authorities have outlined five strategies to eradicate rabies, notably the establishment of rural cadres, vaccination, euthanization, rabies-carrier supervision,

and stray dog population control, Kesuma stated.

Over the past few years, Bali authorities have routinely carried out mass vaccination programs against rabies, targeting stray and domestic dogs.

The fifth mass vaccination program against rabies is part of the government’s effort to make Bali rabies-free and is being implemented since April 15 across the island, targeting 350 thousand stray dogs.

Officially launched in the Gunung Sari Village, Seririt, Buleleng District, where several dog bite cases were recently reported, the fifth mass vaccination program will be carried out until July 31.

The increasing number of stray dog population is a challenge to the mass vaccination program against rabies, Kesuma added.

DENPASAR - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) officially opened the Bali Arts Festival (BAF) XXXVI 2014 at Denpasar Art Center, Friday (Jun 13). Before the opening marked with the beating of kulkul (wooden split drum), President SBY accompanied by First Lady Ani Yudhoyono witnessed the art parade held in front of the Bajra Sandi Monument at Niti Mandala, Renon. Apart from President SBY, it was also attended by a number of ministers and government officials.

In his speech, President SBY said that Indonesia, even the world, much learned from Bali because Balinese community was so closely related to the arts and culture. Thus, the people of Bali were close to God. “Balinese people are so close to the arts and culture. The arts unite, rather than separating. The art brings compassion and it is different from politics. When politics goes beyond the limit, it will be broken,” he said in front of the Governor of Bali I Made Mangku Pastika and the people of Bali.

Related to the central theme of this year’s Bali Arts Festival XXXVI, namely Kertamasa, the president considered it appropriate because the population of the world had been getting more and more. Three years ago, the world population reached 7 billion.

By the year 2045 or centenarian celebration of the Indonesia’s independence, it would approach 9 billion. “In other words, they require more food and more energy. To that end, Indonesia will become an industrial country, so do not forget it. Indonesia must have sufficient food security for their own nation, even it can be donated to relatives overseas,” he said.

Thus, the theme was considered appropriate and visionary, and from the Island of Bali was expected the national ideals could be realized. “It’s what I want to convey. Besides, I’d also like to express my gratitude for the awards (kris dagger and charter) granted by the governor,” he explained. The military was the first time to participate in the activity to enliven the annual art extravaganza in Bali. The team presented the arts of dozens of penjor (bamboo pole with oblation and festoon decoration) and drum band.

Not only that, the parade was also jazzed up by the artists from Karangasem, Buleleng, Jembrana, Denpasar, Tabanan, Badung, Klungkung, Bangli, the NTT art team and concluded with the marching band as the presentation of the Udayana University.

Police investigate causes of poisoning in SDN 2 Susut

The police inspect the SDN 2 Susut due to the poisoning case which happen there (Jun 13) still had to undergo intensive treatment at hospital. At least, twelve students were registered to undergo treatment at two different hospitals, namely 2 students at BMC Hospital and 10 students at Bangli Hospital.

Principal of the SDN 2 Susut elementary school, Wayan Sudarma, admitted that until Saturday noon there were still a number of students under treatment at hospital. His party was still waiting for further development of the student’s health condition. Sudarma said that due to the poisoning incident experienced by dozens of students, the conferment of academic performance which was due to be held on Saturday morning

should be postponed until Monday (Jun 16).

“The academic performance delivery will be held next Monday,” said Sudarma.

As reported earlier, dozens of students of the SDN 2 Susut should be rushed to emergency room (ER) of Bangli Hospital due to poisoning case after enjoying wrap rice and snacks at a farewell party of the sixth grade students of the local school, Friday (Jun13). They were taken by each family after complaining about nausea and dizziness. Up to 11:00 p.m. last Friday, the number of student coming to the Emergency Room of Bangli Hospital was reported to amount to 96 students.

Bodies placed in coffin SPECTACLE of coffin in a neat row embellishes the mortuary of Sanglah Hospital. A total of about 17 coffins are placed in the mortuary. Before putting them into the coffin, the bodies are preserved first with formaldehyde to prevent decomposition process.

The Head of Sanglah Hospital Medical Forensic Installation, Dudut Rustyadi, when met on Saturday (Jun 14) explained if the corpses were placed in the coffin because freezers or refrigerators used to store bodies

in the mortuary of Sanglah Hospital had been full. “It has the capacity of 14 bodies and has been fully occupied.

Eventually, the remaining bodies are placed in a coffin and preserved with formaldehyde,” said Dudut.

All the bodies were not abandoned bodies but deliberately commended by families for a variety of reasons.

“Most people commend a body for reasons of ongoing religious ceremony at their home, so it will be taken home when the ceremony has

ended,” said Dudut.

Other than freezer, Sanglah Hospital also had container that could accommodate 48 bodies. At the moment, the container held at least 32 abandoned or unidentified bodies and could still accommodate about 16 bodies. However, as the container had been damaged since a year ago, most families who wanted to leave the body then chose to put it in a coffin and injected it with formaldehyde.

According to Dudut, the engine

of the container was out of order and should be replaced with the new one.

It was granted by Australia in 2002 after the first Bali bombing incident.

“It is quite old and has not worked properly since 2010. The engine has been replaced for several times, but always broke,” he said.

Most of the bodies put in the container were abandoned or unidentified bodies. To prevent the decomposition process since the engine coolant in the container was not functioning, the

To know the exact cause of the poisoning, Bali Police Forensic Laboratory team started to examine the food samples and location of the making of wrap rice at the home of Ni Wayan Karmiati, a local resident.

Actually, other than wrapping for the students of the SDN 2 Susut, the rest of the food was also consumed with other family members. However, after consuming the food, she and her family members claimed to have not experienced any symptoms of poisoning as afflicting dozens of those students. “I just got information about the poisoning incident around 3:00 p.m.,” she said.

CANGGU - Friday June 6th saw teams from across Asia and Australia strap on their football boots for the commencement of Asia’s biggest AFL carnival. The 2014 Aquarius Bali Masters Football tournament was held at the manicured grounds of the island’s newly renovated, premier sporting facility, The Canggu Club. The annual event hosted by the Bali Geckos Australian Football Club and officially endorsed by the AFL masters, is the biggest football tournament to date on the AFL calendar. Teams were keen to compete, with hopefuls travelling from Western Australia, Borneo, Singapore some from as far afield as Adelaide, Victoria and Dubai to vie for the Masters’ Cup.

Based on field observation, the Forensic Laboratory team consisting of five personnel came to the home of Ni Wayan Karmiati around 11:00 a.m. The team immediately conducted an inventory to the amount of food suspected as the cause of poisoning. The samples taken were including several types of unprocessed foodstuff, food scraps and water. Similarly, the officers conducted an examination of the location and Karmiati’s kitchen utensils used for cooking.

Chief of Bangli Police Criminal Investigation Unit, Nyoman Sukanada, with permission from Bangli Police Chief Suswanto said the examination carried out by his party was to check the condition of cooking location and to look for the rest of alleged cause of the food poisoning for lab test. “All related samples have been brought to Forensic Laboratory. We’re still waiting for the results whether the samples caused the poisoning,” he said. Related to the incident, so far police remained to collect information from multiple parties. Sukanada said there were at least six witnesses asked for their testimonies.

Balinese Temple Ceremony Every Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Jolie, a United Nations special envoy, received the honor on Friday for her work combating sexual violence in war zones.

Jembrana has paid the attention to the damaged classrooms. However, so far it remains to receive no fullest treatment. It definitely happens due to limited funds. One of the classrooms experiencing the damage is the SDN 3 Pendem elementary school located not far from the office of the regent of Jembrana.

The damage was briefly inspected by the Regent of Jembrana, I Putu Artha, recently. Even, Regent Artha requested the relevant agency to follow it up. “It is shameful if

there are damaged schools in the town. If it can be helped through regional budget, please refurbish it, otherwise simply use the special allocation fund (DAK),” he said.

The regent did not want there were still damaged schools. Moreover, it disturbed the students’ learning activities. According to him, the damage at the SDN 3 Pendem should get the attention.

Since the past three years, the construction of classrooms had been prioritized. At some high schools

such as junior and senior high school, it had been made additional classrooms and other rooms such as laboratories.

The Basic Education Division Head of Jembrana Education Agency, I Nyoman Wenten, justified if the SDN 3 Pendem suffered minor damage. According to him, it would be fixed by using the school operation assistance (BOS) or regional budget.

An observer of education doubling as an activist of Forkot NGO, Nur Hariri, said the local government having allocated the educational funds for school fees should also be coupled with the infrastructure of the school because adequate infrastructure also played a role to improve the quality of student learning. “Free school fee and cheap education do not necessarily mean if it is an educational service of economical class. It must go hand in hand because it (infrastructure) also serves to increase the quality of teaching and learning. But the most important is the quality of the teachers,” she said. (olo)
